  1. We can turn back now to our reading in Ephesians chapter 3.

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  2. We can read again at verse 8. Ephesians chapter 3, reading at verse 8.

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  3. To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ,

  4. and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God, who created all things, and so on.

  5. Two things that we have in these verses that we're going to be focusing on this evening.

  6. We have the unsearchable riches of Christ mentioned there in verse 8,

  7. and also we see how Paul here is speaking about a mystery,

  8. and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God, who created all things.

  9. What do you think of when you think of that word mystery?

  10. What comes to mind?

  11. It might have something, bring something to mind that's hard to understand.

  12. Perhaps if you're in school, you're thinking about things that you find difficult as you're studying.

  13. They seem like a mystery, algebra, physics, a foreign language.

  14. It just seems like a mystery when you first start looking at them.

  15. How do you understand these things?

  16. It might be something you've misplaced.

  17. It's a mystery where it's gone.

  18. You leave your keys, you leave glasses, leave all kinds of things lying around and just say,

  19. well, it's a mystery.

  20. I don't know where they've gone to.

  21. It might be something like a book or a TV show that you enjoy.

  22. Maybe you're into mystery novels or mystery shows.

  23. You're wondering about, as it starts, there's an unsolved mystery and who it's going to be that's done it as it were.

  24. And it takes you in different directions before you see the answer coming that was staring you in the face all along.

  25. There's so many things that we can relate to when we think of the word mystery.

  26. As Paul is writing to the people here in Ephesus, he uses the word mystery often.

  27. And he uses this phrase in verse 8 as well as he is a preacher, seeking to preach the unsearchable riches of Christ.

  28. And they sound like things that cannot be known.

  29. They sound like things that are maybe so far off that we just cannot reach them.

  30. But as you make your way through this letter, you find that the people of Ephesus, as he is preaching to them,

  31. are hearing the things that they need to hear.

  32. And this point in his letters, we're about the halfway point.

  33. And he's been teaching them many different things.

  34. And he's been teaching them because there are people who have had their concerns, who have had their struggles.

  35. They've been discouraged.

  36. They've been discouraged by what has happened to Paul himself.

  37. They have seen him writing to them from prison.

  38. They've heard what's happened to him.

  39. They're concerned.

  40. They're discouraged.

  41. They've got their own things going on in Ephesus as well.

  42. There's persecution all around them.

  43. There's threats all around them.

  44. There's fears all around them.

  45. And it's in light of that, then, that Paul is writing to them.

  46. And he's writing to encourage them.

  47. And so it maybe seems a little strange that you write to encourage them,

  48. talking about things that are a mystery or things like the unsearchable riches of Christ.

  49. But that is what he is revealing to them as he writes to them.

  50. And he has already told them so much up to this point that we're going to think about.

  51. Because what you find as you're going through this letter, the people are encouraged.

  52. They're encouraged through what they hear.

  53. And it's like their darkness is turning into light.

  54. As Paul is teaching, as he is proclaiming the gospel to them,

  55. their confusion that has seemed like darkness is becoming light.

  56. The light of God's word is coming in.

  57. Confusion is turning to understanding.

  58. The things that they have been confused about,

  59. they are beginning to understand more in the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  60. And especially that phrase, the unsearchable riches of Christ.

  61. Because the more they get to know that,

  62. the more they are strengthened and encouraged.

  63. So their understanding is growing, their light is coming.

  64. And that is what God's word does for ourselves as well.

  65. That's what the preaching of God's word is meant to do,

  66. to build us up in the faith,

  67. to help us understand the things that are the mysteries of the gospel

  68. and the unsearchable riches of Christ.

  69. But how do we understand?

  70. How do we get to that point?

  71. Well, you could say that it's through much prayer.

  72. We have to get there by much prayer.

  73. And that's where this chapter is leading,

  74. to that wonderful prayer that you have in verse 14 to verse 21,

  75. where Paul says,

  76. For this reason I bow my knees before the Father.

  77. And he prays that they might have a grasp,

  78. that they might grasp the height and length and breadth and depth

  79. of the love of Christ.

  80. It's a wonderful prayer.

  81. And be filled with all the fullness of God.

  82. But before he comes to that prayer,

  83. before he comes to pray that prayer for them,

  84. he wants them to be assured and to be strengthened,

  85. not just by prayer,

  86. but by understanding the word of God,

  87. by understanding the truths of what God has been teaching.

  88. And it's a great reminder to ourselves tonight

  89. when it comes to our own prayers.

  90. As we come to pray to God,

  91. we can pray that great prayer of these verses 14 to 21,

  92. that we might grasp with all the saints

  93. what is the breadth and length and height and depth

  94. and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge.

  95. Again, it seems like something that is far away,

  96. surpasses knowledge.

  97. Can it be known?

  98. It can.

  99. But in order to know it through our prayers,

  100. we really have to come first and foremost

  101. to see it in his word,

  102. to see it in all the truths that he has revealed to us,

  103. to grasp the depths of what God's word is telling us.

  104. Even as we were thinking of this morning,

  105. as we were looking at Paul's letter to the Galatians,

  106. just the previous pages to this,

  107. we were thinking of how often we are caught up

  108. in that way of sin,

  109. how we are repeat offenders,

  110. that sin that just keeps coming back to us again and again.

  111. And yet, as we see here,

  112. we are reminded that we have grace,

  113. we have mercy, we have forgiveness,

  114. we have all of these things.

  115. And that's what God has revealed through his word.

  116. And the more we understand these things,

  117. the more we are then able to pray to him

  118. with a greater knowledge,

  119. with a greater understanding.

  120. Things that seem beyond our understanding.

  121. Do you this evening come here believing God can be known?

  122. Do you come here this evening thinking,

  123. I've got a great knowledge of God?

  124. Or have you come here this evening thinking,

  125. there are so many things I don't understand?

  126. There are so many things that seem beyond my understanding.

  127. Well, probably all of us should be in that latter category.

  128. We don't come here knowing everything

  129. because we cannot possibly know it all.

  130. But we should come here seeking to understand more,

  131. seeking to have our knowledge increased,

  132. seeking to understand the ways of salvation.

  133. When you go back to the Old Testament,

  134. to the book of Deuteronomy, chapter 29, verse 29,

    Deuteronomy 29:29

  135. there it reminds us of what we have before us this evening as well.

  136. It says there,

  137. the secret things belong to the Lord our God.

  138. So there are things that we don't understand.

  139. There are secret things that belong to God.

  140. But it says then,

  141. but the things that are revealed belong to us

  142. and to our children forever,

  143. that we may do all the words of this law.

  144. So there are things that are revealed to us.

  145. There are things that are given to us

  146. that we can seek to understand.

  147. So many things that seem a mystery to us.

  148. The more we study, the more we learn,

  149. the more they begin to be revealed to us.

  150. You think of algebra, you think of physics and maths and foreign languages.

  151. All of these things, they can seem like a mystery to begin with.

  152. But the more we're taught, the more we come to understand.

  153. And that's the way it is with God's Word.

  154. And that's what Paul is doing in this letter,

  155. seeking to teach them the mysteries of the gospel

  156. and the unsearchable riches that there are in Christ.

  157. And so we want to just look at two things together this evening

  158. based on these words.

  159. The first is the mystery of these things.

  160. And then secondly, the marvel of these things.

  161. The mystery and the marvel of these things.

  162. Well, the first thing we have is the mystery.

  163. Have you ever been left with a kind of sense of being dumbstruck before God?

  164. Left with no words to utter.

  165. There's just nothing you can offer up to God.

  166. Maybe it's something that's happened in your life.

  167. It may be a good thing.

  168. It may be a bad thing.

  169. There can be so many things that happen in life

  170. and we're just silenced before God.

  171. We don't know what to say.

  172. We don't know how to express ourselves.

  173. Well, as you look through God's Word,

  174. you find that that is a common occurrence.

  175. Especially when you look in the book of Psalms,

  176. many Psalms,

  177. you find the Psalm is questioning,

  178. asking questions of God.

  179. And there's one Psalm, Psalm 77.

  180. I'm going to quote some of the verses from that Psalm.

  181. And you find the Psalm is there with a sense of being dumbstruck,

  182. as it were,

  183. before God.

  184. He has many questions.

  185. But listen to how the Psalm works out.

  186. Verse 4, it says,

  187. Mine eyes debarred from rest and sleep,

  188. thou makest still to wake.

  189. My trouble is so great that I unable am to speak.

  190. And so you see there the Psalmist,

  191. it's almost like he just cannot sleep,

  192. he cannot rest.

  193. His trouble is so great,

  194. but he says,

  195. I am unable to speak.

  196. It's almost like there's nothing he can bring to God.

  197. But then you see in verse 7,

  198. he has his questions.

  199. Forever will the Lord cast off,

  200. and gracious be no more.

  201. Forever has his mercy gone.

  202. Fails his word evermore.

  203. So he's got questions.

  204. And it's questions that are concerning him.

  205. Has God's mercy gone?

  206. Has his word failed forevermore?

  207. Is there nowhere I can turn?

  208. He's in the midst of a difficult providence.

  209. It's a mystery what is going on in his life.

  210. Then in verse 10 it says,

  211. Then did I say that surely this is mine infirmity?

  212. I'll mind the years of the right hand of him

  213. that is most high.

  214. Yea, I remember will the works performed by the Lord,

  215. the wonders done of old by thee,

  216. I surely will record.

  217. How does the transformation come about?

  218. From being unable to speak in verse 4

  219. until in verse 10 and 11,

  220. he's able to see the works of his right hand most high,

  221. his works performed, the wonders done.

  222. How?

  223. By looking to God.

  224. By looking to him.

  225. What is the psalmist saying?

  226. He's saying,

  227. I have many worries,

  228. I have many questions,

  229. but God is over all.

  230. God is in control.

  231. And that's the very thing that we're seeing here

  232. with Paul in Ephesians.

  233. As he is writing to the church in Ephesus,

  234. as he's writing to the people there,

  235. they have their concerns,

  236. they have their worries about Paul in prison,

  237. about themselves and their own situation.

  238. But what Paul is saying is,

  239. God is in control.

  240. Even in the mystery of the things that take place.

  241. Two kinds of mystery we see here

  242. with Paul in chapter 3.

  243. In verse 1,

  244. we see the mystery of providence.

  245. A great mystery to us all at times,

  246. the mystery of God's providence.

  247. Verse 1,

  248. it says this,

  249. For this reason I,

  250. Paul,

  251. a prisoner for Christ Jesus

  252. on behalf of you Gentiles.

  253. What is he saying there?

  254. Well, the people are concerned

  255. that he's in prison.

  256. But what is Paul saying to them?

  257. Well,

  258. who

  259. put Paul in prison?

  260. The people then,

  261. and we ourselves reading through this,

  262. would say,

  263. well,

  264. it's those in authority.

  265. It's those in power.

  266. Nero was the emperor at this time.

  267. He was an evil man.

  268. He had no time for Christians.

  269. He treated them wickedly.

  270. And so was it him

  271. that put Paul in prison?

  272. Well,

  273. Paul is saying to the people here,

  274. in providence,

  275. it's not.

  276. Because he's reminding them

  277. that he is a prisoner

  278. for Christ Jesus.

  279. This

  280. is where he wants him.

  281. Because he wouldn't be in prison

  282. if that's where Christ didn't want him.

  283. And so he's reminding them

  284. that there is this mystery of providence.

  285. That there are things

  286. that are happening

  287. here for Paul

  288. beyond understanding

  289. for him or for the people.

  290. But that there are assurance

  291. that their comfort is found

  292. in the knowledge

  293. that it is all of Christ.

  294. He is a prisoner

  295. for Christ Jesus

  296. on behalf

  297. of you Gentiles.

  298. He is there

  299. for them.

  300. He is reminding them

  301. that the powers of this world

  302. have no control

  303. over these things.

  304. They are all

  305. in God's hand.

  306. That not one hair

  307. from his head

  308. can be taken

  309. without God knowing

  310. and giving permission

  311. for it.

  312. So you have this mystery

  313. of providence.

  314. And providence

  315. is one of those things

  316. that is so often

  317. a mystery to us.

  318. It can leave us

  319. to that sense of

  320. we have no words

  321. before God.

  322. And it can be

  323. in the providence

  324. that we see

  325. as wonderful providence

  326. and the providence

  327. that we see

  328. as hard providence.

  329. that we see

  330. God is in control.

  331. There's a story told

  332. a story that actually

  333. happened of

  334. two sides

  335. of the same

  336. situation

  337. and both

  338. looking at it

  339. as the providence

  340. of God.

  341. It goes back

  342. to the year

  343. 1980

  344. and someone

  345. wrote about

  346. a Christian

  347. wrote into

  348. an article

  349. in a magazine

  350. about a Christian

  351. who providentially

  352. escaped death.

  353. And this was

  354. because an unexpected

  355. delay in New York

  356. kept this man

  357. from catching

  358. a flight

  359. flight 191

  360. in Chicago

  361. in 1980.

  362. That flight

  363. crashed

  364. and 254

  365. people

  366. lost their lives.

  367. And the article

  368. was written

  369. by the person

  370. saying

  371. this is a

  372. wonderful providence.

  373. How this man

  374. was delayed

  375. in one place

  376. that he ended up

  377. missing his flight.

  378. And you could say

  379. it's a great providence.

  380. But someone

  381. replied

  382. to the article

  383. and said this

  384. I just had to

  385. let you know

  386. about a Christian

  387. who ran

  388. to make flight

  389. 191

  390. and made it.

  391. He got on

  392. the plane

  393. and he perished.

  394. And this man

  395. was a minister

  396. in a church

  397. in California

  398. and his plane

  399. had been late

  400. when he arrived

  401. in Chicago

  402. and he had to run

  403. to catch the flight

  404. but he made it.

  405. He got on board.

  406. And the last thing

  407. his friend saw

  408. was running

  409. towards that gate

  410. to catch that flight.

  411. And this made

  412. the man who wrote

  413. the original article

  414. just ponder

  415. just pause

  416. for a few moments

  417. and think

  418. well where was

  419. God's providence

  420. there?

  421. Was God's providence

  422. operating only

  423. in New York

  424. where one man

  425. was kept

  426. from catching

  427. that flight?

  428. Or was God's providence

  429. at work

  430. where that man

  431. made the flight?

  432. He was a man

  433. who was a

  434. Christian minister

  435. who had a

  436. fruitful ministry.

  437. And the question

  438. could be

  439. well why

  440. has God

  441. allowed that?

  442. It's a mystery

  443. of providence.

  444. But one comment

  445. that was made

  446. was from

  447. the friend

  448. who had seen

  449. the minister

  450. who caught the plane.

  451. And he put it

  452. like this.

  453. At the time

  454. the minister

  455. didn't know

  456. that he was indeed

  457. running to heaven.

  458. That although

  459. it was his providence

  460. that he would pass

  461. away that day

  462. he had a greater

  463. hope

  464. in the Lord

  465. Jesus Christ

  466. that he was safe

  467. for eternity.

  468. And providence

  469. should be seen

  470. in light

  471. of eternity.

  472. And Paul

  473. often speaks

  474. of it in that way

  475. the mystery

  476. of providence.

  477. The mystery

  478. of his providence

  479. here in that

  480. he's in prison

  481. but it's for Christ.

  482. The mystery

  483. of the afflictions

  484. that we have

  485. in this world

  486. but they are

  487. light

  488. momentary

  489. afflictions

  490. he describes

  491. them as

  492. and so we have

  493. this mystery

  494. of providence

  495. and in the midst

  496. of that

  497. we are to have

  498. an eternal

  499. perspective

  500. to look at it

  501. from eternity.

  502. And what helps

  503. with that then

  504. is the second

  505. mystery that we

  506. have here

  507. and that is

  508. the mystery

  509. of the gospel.

  510. Paul uses

  511. the word

  512. mystery here

  513. in verse 3

  514. and verse 4

  515. and verse 6

  516. and verse 9.

  517. and they are

  518. all associated

  519. with the gospel.

  520. When you see it

  521. in verse 3

  522. how the mystery

  523. was made known

  524. to me

  525. by revelation

  526. as I have

  527. written briefly.

  528. So this mystery

  529. was made known.

  530. There's been

  531. a revelation

  532. of this mystery.

  533. And the word

  534. made known

  535. revelation

  536. here is

  537. an uncovering.

  538. An uncovering

  539. uncovering

  540. of things.

  541. So this is

  542. what Paul

  543. has been doing

  544. for the church

  545. at Ephesus

  546. for the church

  547. in Galatia

  548. for the gospel

  549. spreading.

  550. It's a revelation

  551. and it's a revelation

  552. of a mystery.

  553. Just go back

  554. to Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 29:29

  555. 29

  556. verse 29

  557. the things

  558. that are revealed

  559. belong to us.

  560. There's this sense

  561. of revelation.

  562. So you have

  563. this revealing

  564. but you also

  565. have this mystery.

  566. The mystery

  567. refers to

  568. something that's

  569. been hidden

  570. and especially

  571. here it

  572. implies

  573. hidden by

  574. God

  575. because they're

  576. beyond our

  577. natural

  578. understanding

  579. until he

  580. reveals them.

  581. Until he

  582. reveals them.

  583. There are

  584. various things

  585. that you see

  586. being launched

  587. in our world.

  588. Things that are

  589. kept secret

  590. until there's

  591. a big reveal

  592. as it were.

  593. If you're into

  594. Formula One

  595. racing

  596. every new season

  597. they reveal

  598. the new car.

  599. All these secrets

  600. that are being

  601. kept behind the

  602. scenes.

  603. The preparations

  604. that's going on

  605. and then the

  606. launch day

  607. comes and the

  608. car is taken

  609. off under

  610. a cover.

  611. It's revealed

  612. and people are

  613. looking to see

  614. what has been

  615. done.

  616. How they've done

  617. certain things.

  618. there's this

  619. big revelation.

  620. It can also

  621. be done

  622. with phones.

  623. Many of the

  624. big companies

  625. launch a new

  626. phone every

  627. year.

  628. There are secrets

  629. that are kept

  630. and then you

  631. have this big

  632. launch day when

  633. things are

  634. revealed.

  635. The same as

  636. through another

  637. big ceremonies

  638. whether it's

  639. launching boats

  640. or opening

  641. buildings.

  642. They're often

  643. done to a

  644. great fanfare

  645. and people

  646. come curious

  647. to see what

  648. it's like,

  649. what's inside,

  650. how it's been

  651. built,

  652. how it's been

  653. designed.

  654. People want

  655. to look.

  656. That's the

  657. same with the

  658. gospel.

  659. It's a mystery

  660. that is revealed

  661. and we should

  662. be longing to

  663. see what is

  664. in this

  665. mystery.

  666. What is the

  667. mystery that is

  668. being uncovered,

  669. being revealed

  670. here by Paul?

  671. It is the

  672. word of God,

  673. the gospel,

  674. the good news

  675. of Jesus

  676. Christ.

  677. He's saying

  678. God has

  679. lifted a

  680. veil away

  681. from the

  682. truths that

  683. were hidden

  684. by God.

  685. A divine

  686. secret is

  687. revealed and

  688. it's something

  689. that has been

  690. hidden.

  691. It's been

  692. hidden.

  693. In verse

  694. 5 it says

  695. this was not

  696. made known

  697. to the sons

  698. of men and

  699. other generations

  700. as it has

  701. now been

  702. revealed to

  703. his holy

  704. apostles and

  705. prophets by

  706. the Spirit.

  707. So there

  708. were things

  709. that were

  710. hidden.

  711. Even to

  712. people like

  713. Moses and

  714. Abraham,

  715. David,

  716. Isaiah,

  717. they couldn't

  718. see the

  719. whole mystery.

  720. They couldn't

  721. see the full

  722. revelation of

  723. it.

  724. But here

  725. this revelation

  726. is for us.

  727. And it's in

  728. verse 6 it

  729. goes on to

  730. say,

  731. this mystery

  732. is that the

  733. Gentiles are

  734. fellow heirs,

  735. members of the

  736. same body,

  737. partakers of

  738. the promise

  739. in Christ

  740. Jesus through

  741. the gospel.

  742. And this

  743. would be a

  744. moment for

  745. these people

  746. to think,

  747. we thought

  748. that God

  749. was only

  750. for the

  751. Jews.

  752. But here

  753. we are being

  754. told this

  755. mystery,

  756. the Gentiles,

  757. that all

  758. people everywhere

  759. can be

  760. fellow heirs,

  761. members of

  762. the same

  763. body,

  764. partakers of

  765. the same

  766. promise in

  767. Christ Jesus

  768. through the

  769. gospel.

  770. gospel.

  771. This is

  772. a revelation

  773. that is being

  774. made.

  775. The mystery

  776. that is revealed

  777. to you and

  778. to me tonight

  779. is that we

  780. can be

  781. partakers of

  782. this gospel.

  783. Something that

  784. seems a

  785. mystery to us

  786. at times,

  787. so difficult

  788. to understand,

  789. and yet here

  790. we are told

  791. that God

  792. through Christ

  793. and his

  794. spirit works

  795. in us so

  796. we might

  797. understand

  798. these things

  799. that have

  800. been hidden

  801. for generations.

  802. The revelation

  803. of God

  804. to us

  805. through his

  806. son,

  807. Jesus Christ.

  808. What a

  809. wonderful mystery

  810. has been

  811. made known

  812. to us.

  813. Do you

  814. long to

  815. see it

  816. more?

  817. We can

  818. show interest

  819. in F1

  820. cars,

  821. we can

  822. show interest

  823. in phones

  824. and buildings

  825. and boats

  826. and all

  827. of these

  828. things,

  829. but the

  830. greatest

  831. mystery

  832. has been

  833. revealed to

  834. us in

  835. the gospel,

  836. the good

  837. news of

  838. Jesus Christ.

  839. So there's

  840. a mystery

  841. here that

  842. is revealed.

  843. And as

  844. this mystery

  845. is revealed,

  846. we then

  847. see that

  848. there is

  849. a marvel

  850. at this.

  851. And this

  852. then is

  853. what Paul

  854. is describing

  855. as his

  856. role.

  857. In verse

  858. 7 of

  859. this gospel,

  860. this mystery

  861. that's been

  862. revealed,

  863. I was made

  864. a minister

  865. according to

  866. the gift

  867. of God's

  868. grace which

  869. was given

  870. me by

  871. the working

  872. of his

  873. power.

  874. To me,

  875. though I

  876. am the

  877. very least

  878. of all

  879. the saints,

  880. this grace

  881. was given

  882. to preach

  883. to the

  884. Gentiles

  885. the

  886. unsearchable

  887. riches

  888. of Christ.

  889. To me,

  890. though the

  891. very least,

  892. Paul is a

  893. strange word

  894. there that

  895. it was almost

  896. like he made

  897. up a word,

  898. I am the

  899. leastest

  900. of all

  901. the saints.

  902. That's the

  903. way he saw

  904. himself,

  905. as we saw

  906. this morning

  907. reading in

  908. Romans,

  909. Paul,

  910. O wretched

  911. man that

  912. I am.

  913. He is the

  914. leastest of

  915. all the

  916. saints,

  917. but he has

  918. been given

  919. grace,

  920. and he's

  921. been given

  922. grace and

  923. a purpose

  924. to preach

  925. to the

  926. Gentiles

  927. the

  928. unsearchable

  929. riches

  930. of Christ.

  931. So again,

  932. when you have

  933. the unsearchable,

  934. what does it

  935. mean?

  936. Does it mean

  937. it cannot be

  938. known?

  939. Well,

  940. the word

  941. unsearchable

  942. can also

  943. mean

  944. unfathomable.

  945. There's a

  946. depth to

  947. it,

  948. a great

  949. depth,

  950. it's almost

  951. like a

  952. depth that

  953. can never

  954. be reached.

  955. And it's

  956. the way

  957. every preacher

  958. feels,

  959. I'm sure it's

  960. the way

  961. every Christian

  962. feels.

  963. There's just

  964. a depth

  965. to the

  966. wonder of

  967. the gospel

  968. that we

  969. just cannot

  970. get all

  971. the way

  972. down,

  973. even though

  974. as Paul

  975. prays later

  976. in this

  977. chapter,

  978. that we

  979. may grasp

  980. the breadth

  981. and length

  982. and height

  983. and depth.

  984. it's a

  985. prayer that

  986. we might

  987. know it,

  988. but there's

  989. a size,

  990. there's a

  991. scale to

  992. this that

  993. goes beyond

  994. our understanding.

  995. And it's a

  996. marvel to

  997. us.

  998. But Paul

  999. is declaring

  1000. this message

  1001. to the

  1002. church.

  1003. He's

  1004. declaring

  1005. this message

  1006. to ourselves

  1007. here tonight.

  1008. He's

  1009. declaring it

  1010. in a way

  1011. that he's

  1012. saying,

  1013. well,

  1014. no,

  1015. we cannot

  1016. fully comprehend

  1017. it,

  1018. but that we

  1019. should delve

  1020. into the

  1021. very depths

  1022. of it

  1023. because

  1024. there's a

  1025. richness

  1026. here,

  1027. the

  1028. unsearchable

  1029. riches

  1030. of Christ.

  1031. This is

  1032. worth

  1033. delving

  1034. into,

  1035. this is

  1036. worth

  1037. knowing

  1038. because

  1039. it's

  1040. about

  1041. a

  1042. relationship,

  1043. a

  1044. relationship

  1045. that we

  1046. have by

  1047. faith

  1048. in the

  1049. Lord

  1050. Jesus

  1051. Christ.

  1052. A

  1053. mystery

  1054. revealed

  1055. to us

  1056. and the

  1057. unsearchable

  1058. riches

  1059. of Christ,

  1060. they are

  1061. worth

  1062. getting

  1063. our

  1064. teeth

  1065. into.

  1066. A

  1067. man called

  1068. Patrick

  1069. Henry

  1070. He knew

  1071. that his

  1072. days were

  1073. coming to

  1074. an end

  1075. and he

  1076. wanted

  1077. to sort

  1078. out his

  1079. affairs

  1080. with his

  1081. family

  1082. and leave

  1083. to them

  1084. his property

  1085. and various

  1086. things.

  1087. And so

  1088. he did

  1089. that.

  1090. He arranged

  1091. things,

  1092. made sure

  1093. that his

  1094. property

  1095. would be

  1096. given to

  1097. his family

  1098. and sorted

  1099. between

  1100. them.

  1101. But then

  1102. he said,

  1103. there's one

  1104. more thing

  1105. I wish

  1106. I could

  1107. give them

  1108. and that

  1109. is faith

  1110. in Jesus

  1111. Christ.

  1112. And he

  1113. said,

  1114. if they

  1115. had that

  1116. and I

  1117. had not

  1118. given

  1119. them a

  1120. single

  1121. penny,

  1122. they would

  1123. have been

  1124. rich.

  1125. And if

  1126. they had

  1127. not that

  1128. and I

  1129. had given

  1130. them all

  1131. the world,

  1132. they would

  1133. have been

  1134. poor indeed.

  1135. If they

  1136. had that

  1137. faith in

  1138. Christ and

  1139. nothing else,

  1140. they would

  1141. be rich.

  1142. That's what

  1143. Paul is

  1144. saying here.

  1145. He is

  1146. preaching to

  1147. the Gentiles

  1148. the unsearchable

  1149. riches

  1150. of Christ.

  1151. What are

  1152. they?

  1153. what are

  1154. the

  1155. unsearchable

  1156. riches

  1157. of Christ?

  1158. It's like

  1159. they're saying

  1160. there's so

  1161. many,

  1162. they're

  1163. bottomless,

  1164. no one

  1165. can fully

  1166. comprehend

  1167. all that

  1168. they entail,

  1169. but they

  1170. are priceless

  1171. things to

  1172. God's people,

  1173. to his

  1174. redeemed,

  1175. and they

  1176. are made

  1177. known to

  1178. us through

  1179. his word.

  1180. And the

  1181. more we

  1182. understand

  1183. these

  1184. unsearchable

  1185. riches

  1186. of Christ,

  1187. the richer

  1188. then our

  1189. prayer,

  1190. the richer

  1191. then our

  1192. understanding,

  1193. the breadth

  1194. and length

  1195. and height

  1196. and depth

  1197. and to

  1198. know the

  1199. love of

  1200. Christ that

  1201. surpasses

  1202. knowledge.

  1203. What are

  1204. these riches

  1205. then?

  1206. We could go

  1207. on all

  1208. evening

  1209. talking about

  1210. them,

  1211. but just

  1212. to highlight

  1213. a few

  1214. for ourselves.

  1215. He is

  1216. preaching

  1217. the

  1218. unsearchable

  1219. riches.

  1220. We are

  1221. loved by

  1222. God.

  1223. there are

  1224. so many

  1225. verses in

  1226. the scriptures

  1227. that remind

  1228. us of

  1229. this.

  1230. Romans 5

    Romans 5:8

  1231. verse 8,

  1232. but God

  1233. shows his

  1234. love for

  1235. us in

  1236. that while

  1237. we were

  1238. still sinners,

  1239. Christ died

  1240. for us.

  1241. It's a

  1242. mystery and

  1243. it's a

  1244. marvel.

  1245. While we

  1246. were still

  1247. sinners,

  1248. while we

  1249. were away

  1250. from God,

  1251. he showed

  1252. his love

  1253. to us

  1254. that Christ

  1255. Jesus died

  1256. for our

  1257. sins.

  1258. Unsearchable

  1259. riches,

  1260. that we

  1261. are loved

  1262. because how

  1263. can you get

  1264. to the

  1265. depths of

  1266. that love?

  1267. You can't,

  1268. but we can

  1269. marvel at it.

  1270. Isn't it a

  1271. mystery and a

  1272. marvel that we

  1273. could say with

  1274. John Newton,

  1275. amazing grace,

  1276. how sweet the

  1277. sound that

  1278. saved a

  1279. wretch like

  1280. me.

  1281. It is

  1282. grace.

  1283. It's the

  1284. grace that

  1285. Paul writes

  1286. of in this

  1287. letter,

  1288. by grace

  1289. you have

  1290. been saved

  1291. through faith.

  1292. The wonder

  1293. of God's

  1294. love, the

  1295. marvel of

  1296. God's love.

  1297. What about

  1298. the fact that

  1299. we are a

  1300. chosen people?

  1301. You go back

  1302. to chapter

  1303. one of this

  1304. letter,

  1305. you know,

  1306. Paul has

  1307. said that he

  1308. has written

  1309. briefly before

  1310. chapter three.

  1311. Well, in

  1312. chapter one,

  1313. in verse

  1314. four, what

  1315. does he

  1316. say?

  1317. Even as

  1318. he chose

  1319. us in

  1320. him before

  1321. the foundation

  1322. of the

  1323. world.

  1324. There is a

  1325. mystery and

  1326. a marvel in

  1327. that.

  1328. There is the

  1329. doctrine of

  1330. election for

  1331. us.

  1332. He has

  1333. chosen us

  1334. before the

  1335. foundation of

  1336. the world.

  1337. How can we

  1338. understand these

  1339. things?

  1340. Charles Spurgeon

  1341. was asked by

  1342. one of his

  1343. congregation,

  1344. how do I

  1345. know if I

  1346. am in the

  1347. elect?

  1348. It's a

  1349. question maybe

  1350. many of you

  1351. here have.

  1352. It's a

  1353. common question.

  1354. Well,

  1355. Charles Spurgeon's

  1356. reply was,

  1357. ask yourself

  1358. instead,

  1359. do I

  1360. believe with

  1361. all my

  1362. heart?

  1363. If you

  1364. do, you

  1365. are in the

  1366. elect.

  1367. We cannot

  1368. understand the

  1369. depths of

  1370. these things,

  1371. the mystery of

  1372. these things.

  1373. us.

  1374. But yet

  1375. the gospel

  1376. calls us to

  1377. put our

  1378. trust in

  1379. the Lord

  1380. Jesus Christ,

  1381. to believe

  1382. in him with

  1383. all our

  1384. hearts.

  1385. And then

  1386. we are

  1387. reminded that

  1388. how can we

  1389. know we

  1390. are in the

  1391. elect?

  1392. How can we

  1393. be one of

  1394. those?

  1395. Well, in

  1396. Ephesians 1

    Ephesians 1:7

  1397. verse 7,

  1398. we are told

  1399. we are saved

  1400. by the blood

  1401. of his

  1402. Son.

  1403. In

  1404. verse 7,

  1405. in him

  1406. we have

  1407. redemption

  1408. through his

  1409. blood for

  1410. the forgiveness

  1411. of our

  1412. trespasses

  1413. according to

  1414. the riches

  1415. of his

  1416. grace.

  1417. We are

  1418. saved

  1419. because of

  1420. God's

  1421. love,

  1422. because of

  1423. God's

  1424. choosing,

  1425. because of

  1426. God's

  1427. giving

  1428. his Son.

  1429. So when

  1430. we are

  1431. discouraged,

  1432. as the

  1433. people in

  1434. Ephesus

  1435. were,

  1436. when we

  1437. are discouraged

  1438. by sin,

  1439. as we were

  1440. thinking about

  1441. this morning,

  1442. when we

  1443. are discouraged

  1444. by the

  1445. world,

  1446. and by

  1447. feeling

  1448. unworthy,

  1449. and all

  1450. of these

  1451. things,

  1452. where do

  1453. we have

  1454. to go?

  1455. Where can

  1456. we look?

  1457. Not to

  1458. ourselves,

  1459. but to

  1460. the cross

  1461. of Jesus

  1462. Christ,

  1463. whereby

  1464. his blood

  1465. we are

  1466. forgiven.

  1467. We have

  1468. redemption

  1469. through

  1470. his blood.

  1471. And then

  1472. Paul goes

  1473. on into

  1474. chapter 2

  1475. here,

  1476. and give

  1477. us a

  1478. wonderful

  1479. assurance

  1480. there in

  1481. verse 6,

  1482. chapter 2,

  1483. verse 6,

  1484. comes in

  1485. that great

  1486. part where

  1487. we are by

  1488. grace saved

  1489. through faith.

  1490. We were

  1491. dead in our

  1492. trespasses and

  1493. sins in which

  1494. we once

  1495. walked.

  1496. But then

  1497. in verse

  1498. 6, we

  1499. have those

  1500. words,

  1501. and raised

  1502. us up with

  1503. him and

  1504. seated us

  1505. with him in

  1506. the heavenly

  1507. places in

  1508. Christ Jesus.

  1509. Isn't that a

  1510. mystery?

  1511. Isn't that a

  1512. marvel?

  1513. That he has

  1514. raised us

  1515. up.

  1516. And when you

  1517. go back to

  1518. verse 4,

  1519. that reminds

  1520. us of how

  1521. but God,

  1522. being rich in

  1523. mercy because

  1524. of the great

  1525. love with

  1526. which he

  1527. loved us,

  1528. even when we

  1529. were dead in

  1530. our trespasses,

  1531. made us alive

  1532. together with

  1533. Christ.

  1534. By grace,

  1535. you have been

  1536. saved.

  1537. And that is

  1538. how we are

  1539. seated in the

  1540. heavenly places.

  1541. Even now,

  1542. you are alive

  1543. in Christ.

  1544. You are in

  1545. him.

  1546. You have

  1547. access to

  1548. the very

  1549. throne of

  1550. grace in

  1551. heaven.

  1552. And you

  1553. see there,

  1554. it kind of

  1555. ties all

  1556. these things

  1557. together.

  1558. We're chosen.

  1559. We're loved.

  1560. We are

  1561. seated.

  1562. We are

  1563. forgiven by

  1564. his grace.

  1565. All of

  1566. these things,

  1567. they're so

  1568. mysterious to

  1569. us, and yet

  1570. we can marvel

  1571. at them.

  1572. So the

  1573. more that we

  1574. look, the

  1575. more that we

  1576. see the

  1577. depth of

  1578. his love

  1579. for us.

  1580. We are

  1581. also secure

  1582. in him.

  1583. In verse

  1584. 8, for

  1585. by grace

  1586. you have

  1587. been saved

  1588. through faith.

  1589. This is not

  1590. your own

  1591. doing.

  1592. It is the

  1593. gift of

  1594. God.

  1595. It is

  1596. God who

  1597. has done

  1598. this.

  1599. It is

  1600. God who

  1601. has given

  1602. us this

  1603. security.

  1604. And that

  1605. is what we

  1606. can marvel

  1607. at.

  1608. It is

  1609. a gift.

  1610. A gift

  1611. from God.

  1612. And so

  1613. then as we

  1614. read other

  1615. passages such

  1616. as Romans

    Romans 8:38

  1617. 8, verse

  1618. 38 and

  1619. 39, what

  1620. great assurance,

  1621. what great

  1622. comfort we

  1623. can take

  1624. there from

  1625. these riches

  1626. of Christ.

  1627. For I am

  1628. sure that

  1629. neither death

  1630. nor life

  1631. nor angels

  1632. nor rulers

  1633. nor things

  1634. present nor

  1635. things to

  1636. come nor

  1637. powers nor

  1638. height nor

  1639. depth nor

  1640. anything else

  1641. in all

  1642. creation will

  1643. be able to

  1644. separate us

  1645. from the

  1646. love of

  1647. God in

  1648. Christ Jesus

  1649. our Lord.

  1650. How?

  1651. Well, because

  1652. of God's

  1653. grace to

  1654. us.

  1655. For by

  1656. grace you

  1657. have been

  1658. saved through

  1659. faith, a

  1660. gift of

  1661. God.

  1662. We have

  1663. security in

  1664. him.

  1665. This is

  1666. just a

  1667. small sampling

  1668. of the

  1669. unsearchable

  1670. riches of

  1671. Christ.

  1672. There are

  1673. so many

  1674. other things

  1675. that we

  1676. can look

  1677. at, but

  1678. they are

  1679. reminders to

  1680. us of

  1681. what the

  1682. mystery that

  1683. is revealed

  1684. to us.

  1685. This

  1686. gospel gives

  1687. us.

  1688. It is to

  1689. marvel at

  1690. these

  1691. unsearchable

  1692. riches of

  1693. Christ.

  1694. So we

  1695. can praise

  1696. him now

  1697. and praise

  1698. him for

  1699. all

  1700. eternity.

  1701. And so

  1702. then that is

  1703. why Paul

  1704. goes on

  1705. to pray

  1706. in

  1707. understanding

  1708. these things.

  1709. For this

  1710. reason I

  1711. bow my

  1712. knees before

  1713. the Father.

  1714. This is

  1715. verse 14.

  1716. From whom

  1717. every family

  1718. in heaven

  1719. and on

  1720. earth are

  1721. named.

  1722. This is

  1723. his prayer.

  1724. That they

  1725. may have

  1726. strength to

  1727. comprehend

  1728. with all

  1729. the saints

  1730. what is

  1731. the breadth

  1732. and length

  1733. and height

  1734. and depth

  1735. and to

  1736. know the

  1737. love of

  1738. Christ that

  1739. surpasses

  1740. knowledge.

  1741. That is

  1742. where the

  1743. prayer comes

  1744. from.

  1745. From

  1746. understanding

  1747. the mystery

  1748. that is

  1749. revealed of

  1750. these

  1751. unsearchable

  1752. riches of

  1753. Christ that

  1754. are so

  1755. many.

  1756. Let us

  1757. look into

  1758. this mystery.

  1759. Let us

  1760. search the

  1761. depths of

  1762. these

  1763. unsearchable

  1764. riches.

  1765. Because the

  1766. more that we

  1767. know them

  1768. the more

  1769. they bring

  1770. us closer

  1771. even in

  1772. our prayers

  1773. to coming

  1774. seeking that

  1775. prayer to

  1776. grasp

  1777. even more

  1778. all of

  1779. these things.

  1780. I quoted

  1781. from Martin

  1782. Luther this

  1783. morning.

  1784. I will

  1785. quote him

  1786. again as

  1787. we conclude

  1788. this evening.

  1789. He once

  1790. said,

  1791. I have held

  1792. many things

  1793. in my

  1794. hands and

  1795. I have

  1796. lost them

  1797. all,

  1798. but whatever

  1799. I have

  1800. placed in

  1801. God's

  1802. hands,

  1803. that I

  1804. still

  1805. possess.

  1806. It is a

  1807. wonderful

  1808. thought that.

  1809. I have held

  1810. many things

  1811. in my

  1812. hands and

  1813. I have

  1814. lost them

  1815. all,

  1816. but whatever

  1817. I have

  1818. placed in

  1819. God's

  1820. hands,

  1821. that I

  1822. still

  1823. possess,

  1824. because with

  1825. God all

  1826. things are

  1827. secure,

  1828. and we

  1829. seek to

  1830. take hold

  1831. of things

  1832. ourselves,

  1833. we lose

  1834. them.

  1835. But when

  1836. we put

  1837. ourselves

  1838. into the

  1839. hands of

  1840. God,

  1841. we lose

  1842. nothing,

  1843. and we

  1844. gain so

  1845. much more,

  1846. the unsearchable

  1847. riches of

  1848. Christ.

  1849. There is a

  1850. mystery around

  1851. them,

  1852. but they are

  1853. revealed to

  1854. us through

  1855. his word,

  1856. and there

  1857. is reward

  1858. for those

  1859. who seek

  1860. him and

  1861. follow him.

  1862. And so

  1863. may he

  1864. help us

  1865. to delve

  1866. into them,

  1867. to understand

  1868. them,

  1869. and to

  1870. know them

  1871. more fully

  1872. and more

  1873. meaningful for

  1874. ourselves,

  1875. to lead us

  1876. closer at

  1877. all times

  1878. to him.

  1879. Let us

  1880. pray.

  1881. Lord,

  1882. our gracious

  1883. God,

  1884. we do

  1885. thank you

  1886. for your

  1887. truth,

  1888. we thank

  1889. you for

  1890. your gospel,

  1891. we thank

  1892. you for

  1893. how it is

  1894. revealed to

  1895. us,

  1896. through

  1897. your word,

  1898. and we

  1899. pray that

  1900. prayer this

  1901. evening that

  1902. we will be

  1903. able to

  1904. grasp with

  1905. all the

  1906. saints what

  1907. is the

  1908. length and

  1909. breadth and

  1910. height and

  1911. depth,

  1912. and to

  1913. know the

  1914. love of

  1915. Christ that

  1916. surpasses

  1917. knowledge,

  1918. that we

  1919. might be

  1920. filled with

  1921. the fullness

  1922. of God,

  1923. as we ask

  1924. it in

  1925. Jesus' name.

  1926. Amen.

  1927. Amen.

  1928. We'll

  1929. conclude by

  1930. singing to

  1931. God's

  1932. praise in

  1933. Psalm 146,

  1934. Scottish

  1935. Psalter

  1936. version,

  1937. page 446

  1938. of the

  1939. psalm

  1940. books.

  1941. Psalm 146,

  1942. we'll sing

  1943. from verse

  1944. 8 to

  1945. verse 10.

  1953. their sight,

  1954. the bow

  1956. raise,

  1957. the Lord

  1958. doth dearly

  1959. love all

  1960. those that

  1961. walk in

  1962. upright ways.

  1966. the end
