  1. We can turn back together to our reading in Deuteronomy chapter 10.

    Deuteronomy 10 chapter mention

  2. ! We're going to look at the last part of the chapter, verse 12, down to the end.

  3. Deuteronomy chapter 10, verse 12, where it asks the question there,

    Deuteronomy 10:12

  4. And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you but to fear the Lord your God,

  5. to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart

  6. and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments and statutes of the Lord which I am commanding you

  7. today for your good, and so on.

  8. What's your favorite book of the Bible?

  9. I don't know, maybe you have one, maybe you have many different books of the Bible that you like turning to,

  10. depending what kind of situation you're in in life or just what's on your mind.

  11. There can be many different places that we turn.

  12. It might be going into the Old Testament, you enjoy reading some of the narratives there about events that took place a long time ago.

  13. It might be to the book of Psalms or Proverbs, where there's much wisdom given to us, much kind of direction.

  14. It might be the prophets that you enjoy, where you see God speaking through them,

  15. warning people and telling them of events that are to come.

  16. Perhaps you go into the New Testament, you enjoy the Gospels and how they speak to us of the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ,

  17. and how he came and what he did.

  18. We read accounts, events that happened.

  19. We read great depths of understanding of who God is and who Jesus is.

  20. You see the book of Acts, and you enjoy that accounts of the Gospel spreading through many different people to many different places.

  21. And then you read the letters of Paul and others writing to churches that have been established.

  22. Or you come into the book of Revelation, and you begin to wonder about what is ahead.

  23. What is the book of Revelation talking about?

  24. There's so many different parts of Scripture.

  25. There's such a variety to us.

  26. There's such a wealth of learning in it.

  27. And we can go to different parts, depending what's going on in our minds.

  28. But where does Deuteronomy feature in that variety of what you read?

  29. How often do you turn to the book of Deuteronomy and think, I want to go into Deuteronomy?

  30. It's such an encouraging book.

  31. It's maybe not one that comes to mind immediately.

  32. And yet, when we go into it, as you read through it, there's so much to take from it.

  33. When we maybe think to ourselves, as many people do,

  34. I'm going to read the Bible from the beginning to the end.

  35. I mentioned this before, how often people can start reading in Genesis.

  36. And we were in Leviticus a few weeks ago now.

  37. And very often, that's where people get bogged down,

  38. where people kind of come to a shuddering halt.

  39. It gets into us talking about things maybe we don't understand, we find difficult to read.

  40. And sadly, many people can come to a conclusion of their reading from beginning to end in Leviticus.

  41. And you don't get as far as Deuteronomy.

  42. You miss out on what Deuteronomy speaks about because it's got a wealth of things to say to us.

  43. Such an important book as we see it in the Old Testament.

  44. But its importance is also seen in how often it's mentioned in the New Testament as well.

  45. Gordon Wenham, a writer, a theologian, describes it in this way.

  46. He says it's the linchpin of the Old Testament.

  47. It's what holds everything else together.

  48. So it's an important book.

  49. And it's seen how important it is and how often it's quoted in the New Testament.

  50. You might be surprised that along with Genesis, Psalms, and Isaiah,

  51. it's the most quoted book in the New Testament.

  52. So why is it so important?

  53. What's its significance?

  54. And has its significance waned, if you like?

  55. Is it less important today?

  56. It was written many thousands of years ago.

  57. And yet the truths that we find in it for the there and then, as Moses is leading a people into the promised land,

  58. are very much truths that we need for the here and now as well.

  59. They speak very much into our day.

  60. And it was written at the time when Moses had led the children of Israel out of their captivity in Egypt,

  61. led them through the wilderness and leading them to the border of the promised land.

  62. And here he is, if you like, renewing the covenant with his people.

  63. God reminding them of the promises that he has given to them.

  64. And here in chapter 10, if you just look back into chapter 9,

  65. you see it's just after the incident with the golden calf,

  66. where the people of God had got tired of Moses being away from them.

  67. Where is he? Why isn't he coming back?

  68. And then saying, he's not coming back.

  69. And they said, let us make a golden calf to worship in place of God.

  70. And this is what they did.

  71. And Moses, when he came down, he smashed the tablets of the Ten Commandments.

  72. That's why we read in chapter 10,

  73. these new tablets of stone with the Ten Commandments were being given.

  74. This was the incident around this time,

  75. around these events that we're reading of in chapter 10.

  76. And it kind of makes it even more remarkable just how God speaks to them in chapter 10,

  77. the kind of mercy that he shows to them.

  78. And Moses is preaching here about their need for an allegiance to God.

  79. That as they go into the promised land,

  80. a land filled with many different temptations,

  81. and especially the choices of what God to worship,

  82. because the place would be full of idols and false gods

  83. that they could choose to worship.

  84. Moses is saying, if you want to know blessing and favor from God,

  85. you are to worship him alone.

  86. You are to worship God alone.

  87. And there is a relevance for ourselves today.

  88. Because we read here about the temptations that these men, women, boys and girls

  89. were going to face in all the variety,

  90. all the choices that they would have going into the promised land.

  91. So many things taking them away from God.

  92. So many false gods that would be around saying,

  93. this is who you need to worship.

  94. This is what you need to do.

  95. When Moses is saying, no, if you want to know blessing and favor,

  96. you must worship God and him alone.

  97. And so as we see here in chapter 10,

  98. what we see is a God who shows real compassion,

  99. real grace, real mercy towards these people,

  100. despite their sin,

  101. and calls them to worship him alone.

  102. And that's the wonder of what it says to us as well today.

  103. That if we want to know blessing and favor from God,

  104. we must put our trust in him as Lord and God of all.

  105. That we can only love him because he first loved us.

  106. And that's what he shows in this passage.

  107. Many of God's people have spoken about how God has blessed them

  108. as they have been faithful to him

  109. in many difficult and different situations.

  110. Take, for example, a man called George Muller.

  111. He lived in the 1800s, 1805 to 1898.

  112. And you may have heard many accounts of George Muller.

  113. He built orphanages down in England.

  114. And many, many children passed through these orphanages.

  115. Many were helped, given food,

  116. given a place to sleep, a place to rest,

  117. but also given and shown the love of Jesus Christ.

  118. And he did this without a personal salary.

  119. It wasn't like he was being paid directly for doing this.

  120. And he relied on God to supply money

  121. and to supply food.

  122. And there's remarkable accounts of how they prayed

  123. when there was nothing and God provided.

  124. And he was a man of faith.

  125. And God rewarded that faith.

  126. And he had a motto on his desk.

  127. He had a motto that he looked at for many, many years,

  128. over many years of wondering where things would come from,

  129. wondering how they were going to go on.

  130. This motto brought comfort and strength in times of need.

  131. And the motto was this.

  132. It matters to him about you.

  133. It matters to him about you.

  134. Just a few words.

  135. And it was based on 1 Peter 5, verse 7,

    1 Peter 5:7

  136. where it says that,

  137. Cast your cares upon the Lord,

  138. for he cares for you.

  139. So he had this motto,

  140. it matters to him, to God, about you.

  141. That he knew that God was with him.

  142. And he saw this in many different ways.

  143. And he testified of this over many, many years.

  144. Over all his life,

  145. he testified to the goodness of God.

  146. And that's the kind of testimony that Moses is wanting,

  147. the people of God then to have,

  148. and for ourselves to have.

  149. That here is a God that we can rely upon.

  150. A God who we matter to.

  151. It matters to him about you.

  152. That is a wonderful way of looking at life.

  153. It matters to him about you.

  154. But that love of God then leads us to ask,

  155. well, how do we give back to him?

  156. What do we show to him?

  157. And as we take up our reading here in verse 12 of chapter 10,

  158. Moses is really showing,

  159. this is just how much you matter to him.

  160. And there's three things we want to take from this passage.

  161. The first thing is that there's a requirement

  162. put before the people.

  163. Then there's a reminder given to them about who God is.

  164. And then there's a response called for.

  165. There's a requirement, there's a reminder,

  166. and there's a response called for.

  167. And so the reminder that we see is in verse 12.

  168. And now, Israel, what does the Lord require of you?

  169. There's a question.

  170. And this question comes just after they've been reminded about

  171. how God has been almost kept from pouring out his wrath upon them.

  172. In verse 10 and 11, it says,

  173. I myself stayed in the mountain that first time for 40 days and 40 nights.

  174. And the Lord listened to me that time also.

  175. The Lord was unwilling to destroy you.

  176. He could have.

  177. That's the reality of what sin brings.

  178. It can bring devastation.

  179. It can bring destruction upon us.

  180. The wages of sin is death.

  181. And so it's in light of this,

  182. the Lord was unwilling to destroy you.

  183. And then it goes on in verse 11.

  184. And the Lord said to me,

  185. Arise, go on your journey at the head of the people

  186. so that they may go in and possess the land

  187. which I swore to their fathers to give them.

  188. So you see, this comes in the midst of mercy.

  189. It comes in the midst of God's grace.

  190. God did not destroy them as he could have.

  191. And then it comes into verse 12.

  192. And now, Israel,

  193. what does the Lord your God require of you?

  194. So there's a challenge.

  195. God loves you,

  196. but what does that mean in terms of how you view God?

  197. And then it gives us an answer

  198. as to what the Lord requires of you.

  199. But to fear the Lord your God,

  200. to walk in all his ways,

  201. to love him,

  202. to serve him,

  203. to keep his word.

  204. There's a summary of these things there.

  205. What does the Lord require?

  206. To fear the Lord,

  207. walk in his ways,

  208. love him,

  209. serve him,

  210. and keep his word.

  211. And that's not just for their day.

  212. There's a great reminder to us

  213. of what the Lord requires of ourselves today.

  214. Fear the Lord.

  215. That means a right reverence

  216. towards God.

  217. Walk in his ways.

  218. Love him.

  219. Serve him.

  220. Keep his word.

  221. Moses was the leader assigned to the people.

  222. Then God had chosen him

  223. to lead the people out of Egypt

  224. into the promised land.

  225. And so Moses is one who is,

  226. he is almost speaking to himself there,

  227. first and foremost.

  228. He's part of this.

  229. He was to lead them.

  230. Well,

  231. he was to live like this as well,

  232. to fear the Lord,

  233. to walk in his ways,

  234. to love him,

  235. serve him,

  236. and keep his word.

  237. It wasn't just applying to the people.

  238. It was applying to himself.

  239. And that is the way that we are to live.

  240. That is the way that God is asking of ourselves today as well.

  241. From every one of us,

  242. this is how we are to live.

  243. We are to see the reality of the situation that we are in,

  244. where the Lord could destroy us in our sin,

  245. but where the Lord is merciful,

  246. but the Lord makes demands of us.

  247. And that's to come from the top right down to the bottom.

  248. Tomorrow it may be that we have a new prime minister

  249. over us as a nation.

  250. And you would love it

  251. if this is what was being spoken of

  252. as a new leader is appointed.

  253. What does the Lord require of you

  254. as you become prime minister?

  255. To fear the Lord,

  256. to walk in his ways,

  257. to love him,

  258. and serve him,

  259. and keep his word,

  260. it would be wonderful.

  261. And we pray that a day would come

  262. when that would be so.

  263. But it's required of all leaders,

  264. of all with responsibility.

  265. There's a man called Max Dupree.

  266. He was an American businessman

  267. and a Christian as well.

  268. He died in 2017, I think it was,

  269. but he wrote many books,

  270. and especially about what it meant to be.

  271. He said,

  272. a good leader.

  273. And he said this,

  274. the first responsibility of a leader

  275. is to define reality.

  276. Leaders need to have a good picture

  277. of what is really going on around them.

  278. And they need to help others

  279. take an honest look at this reality.

  280. That is what's required of a leader,

  281. he was saying,

  282. to know the reality of what's going on around

  283. and to look at this reality.

  284. Well,

  285. Moses was aware of the reality of the situation.

  286. He was aware of what was going on around

  287. and what was going on ahead of them

  288. as they were going into the promised land.

  289. He was aware that they could be so easily led astray.

  290. The reality of idols,

  291. the reality of temptations,

  292. the reality of people being led away from God.

  293. He was aware of the reality of all of these things.

  294. But he was also aware of the reality of what God could do.

  295. He was aware of the reality of who God is.

  296. And you just have to turn back another,

  297. to chapter 8,

  298. verse 11.

  299. And there you see,

  300. as he was speaking

  301. to the people before they go into the promised land,

  302. what does it say?

  303. In chapter 8,

  304. verse 11,

  305. take care lest you forget the Lord your God

  306. by not keeping his commandments

  307. and his rules and his statutes

  308. which I command you today.

  309. This is the word of God through Moses.

  310. Take care lest you forget

  311. the Lord your God.

  312. Because that's how easily it happens.

  313. That's how quickly it happens.

  314. And you see it does

  315. as you go on.

  316. But God is giving a requirement to them here.

  317. And what is required is not to follow Moses.

  318. Good, I lead it as Moses was.

  319. But it's to follow God.

  320. To follow him.

  321. To fear God.

  322. To love God.

  323. To walk in his ways.

  324. To serve him.

  325. And to keep his word.

  326. And what does he require of us today?

  327. Exactly the same thing.

  328. To be aware of the reality in which we live.

  329. A fallen world.

  330. A sinful world.

  331. But to be aware too of the reality of a great

  332. and an awesome God.

  333. A God who is far more powerful than we are.

  334. And so there's a requirement first.

  335. The second thing we see here is a reminder.

  336. And what a powerful reminder it is for us as well.

  337. In verse 14 and 15.

  338. Behold to the Lord your God belong heaven

  339. and heaven of heavens.

  340. The earth and all that is in it.

  341. Yet the Lord set his heart and love

  342. on your fathers and chose their offspring

  343. after them.

  344. You above all peoples

  345. as you are this day.

  346. Moses here reminds the people

  347. of who God is.

  348. And he does it in two ways.

  349. The first thing is you see

  350. the enormity of God.

  351. The awesomeness of God.

  352. Behold the Lord your God.

  353. To the Lord your God belong heaven

  354. and heaven of heavens.

  355. The earth and all that is in it.

  356. Everything.

  357. Everything.

  358. The world.

  359. And all of the creation

  360. that we see around us

  361. belongs to God.

  362. Just like Psalm 96.

  363. For great is the Lord

  364. and greatly to be praised

  365. because he made

  366. the heavens

  367. and earth.

  368. This is the reality of God.

  369. This is the reality of God

  370. to Moses

  371. that he is showing to the people

  372. then that he is showing

  373. to us today.

  374. To God belong all

  375. of these things.

  376. The heavens declare

  377. the glory of God.

  378. We see it

  379. all around us.

  380. His creation

  381. and the wonder of it.

  382. So God is

  383. an awesome

  384. a powerful

  385. God

  386. a creator God

  387. as we see in verse 14.

  388. But then you go into

  389. verse 15.

  390. Yet the Lord

  391. set his heart

  392. in love

  393. on your fathers

  394. and chose their offspring

  395. after them.

  396. You above all peoples

  397. as you are

  398. this day.

  399. It's amazing that you think

  400. as you are

  401. this day.

  402. How were they

  403. in that day?

  404. They had just come

  405. from a place

  406. where they had made

  407. the golden calf.

  408. They just come

  409. from a place

  410. where they had been

  411. disobedient

  412. to God

  413. where they had turned

  414. their back

  415. on God

  416. and made their own

  417. God

  418. to worship.

  419. Yet God says

  420. yet

  421. the Lord

  422. has set his love

  423. on your fathers

  424. and upon you

  425. despite how you are.

  426. It's amazing.

  427. It's a powerful

  428. it's a wonderful

  429. reminder

  430. with such care

  431. and attention

  432. God has given

  433. to us

  434. to you

  435. and to me.

  436. the people

  437. are called

  438. there to follow

  439. and worship

  440. God

  441. not just because

  442. he rescued them

  443. out of Egypt

  444. not just because

  445. of the wonders

  446. that they were

  447. seeing around them

  448. not out of a sense

  449. of guilt

  450. although

  451. many would say

  452. that

  453. that is how

  454. Christians come

  455. to worship

  456. the Lord Jesus

  457. it's out of a sense

  458. of guilt

  459. that's not how

  460. we come

  461. to worship

  462. God

  463. it isn't either

  464. because God

  465. commands

  466. as if we've got

  467. no choice

  468. in the matter

  469. God doesn't just

  470. dictate

  471. to us

  472. no

  473. instead

  474. the Lord

  475. is powerful

  476. the Lord

  477. is loving

  478. the Lord

  479. is gracious

  480. towards us

  481. and when we see

  482. the love

  483. of God

  484. when we realize

  485. the grace

  486. of God

  487. as the people

  488. here have seen

  489. it

  490. making the golden

  491. calf

  492. and yet in

  493. verse 10

  494. it says

  495. the Lord

  496. was unwilling

  497. to destroy

  498. you

  499. they see

  500. the love

  501. of God

  502. and it is

  503. that love

  504. of God

  505. that surely

  506. moves them

  507. to see

  508. their need

  509. of him

  510. and surely

  511. it is that love

  512. of God

  513. that moves

  514. us to see

  515. how much

  516. we need

  517. God as well

  518. that despite

  519. our sin

  520. that despite

  521. all that we

  522. do that is

  523. wrong

  524. that despite

  525. our turning

  526. our back

  527. on him

  528. almost again

  529. and again

  530. and again

  531. that yet

  532. he has shown

  533. great love

  534. towards us

  535. because he is

  536. a covenant

  537. God

  538. a covenant

  539. is a promise

  540. a promise

  541. from God

  542. and it is that

  543. covenant love

  544. that God

  545. shows again

  546. and again

  547. and again

  548. throughout his word

  549. the steadfast love

  550. of God

  551. as the psalmist

  552. so often

  553. says

  554. that unchanging

  555. love of God

  556. despite

  557. our changeableness

  558. in this world

  559. so that as it

  560. says there

  561. in verse

  562. 15

  563. you above all

  564. peoples

  565. even as you are

  566. this day

  567. even as you are

  568. this day

  569. even as you are

  570. even as I am

  571. this day

  572. sinners

  573. falling short

  574. of the glory

  575. of God

  576. again and again

  577. and yet

  578. we have this

  579. powerful reminder

  580. of his great

  581. love

  582. and where do we

  583. see this love

  584. where do we

  585. see this grace

  586. shown to us

  587. well it says

  588. there the Lord

  589. was unwilling

  590. to destroy

  591. them

  592. well where do we

  593. see it is when we

  594. go forward

  595. into the New Testament

  596. when we go

  597. forward and see it

  598. in the person

  599. of Jesus Christ

  600. that God

  601. desired that

  602. none be lost

  603. and how would

  604. this be

  605. how could

  606. this be

  607. but that God

  608. sent his own

  609. son

  610. to die

  611. for our sin

  612. why

  613. because he

  614. loved us

  615. for God

  616. so loved

  617. the world

  618. that he gave

  619. his son

  620. a remarkable

  621. truth

  622. and

  623. although he's

  624. speaking here

  625. to the children

  626. of Israel

  627. as we go

  628. forward into

  629. the New Testament

  630. we are reminded

  631. that through

  632. faith we are

  633. part of these

  634. people too

  635. 1st Peter

  636. chapter 2

  637. speaks about it

  638. but you are

  639. a chosen

  640. people

  641. a royal

  642. priesthood

  643. a holy

  644. nation

  645. a people

  646. belonging

  647. to God

  648. that you may

  649. declare the

  650. praises of

  651. him who

  652. called you

  653. out of

  654. darkness

  655. into his

  656. wonderful

  657. light

  658. once

  659. you were

  660. not a

  661. people

  662. but now

  663. you are the

  664. people of

  665. God

  666. once

  667. you had

  668. not

  669. received

  670. mercy

  671. but now

  672. you have

  673. received

  674. mercy

  675. who is

  676. that for

  677. it is

  678. for all

  679. who will

  680. believe

  681. in the

  682. Lord

  683. Jesus

  684. Christ

  685. he has

  686. shown

  687. his

  688. love

  689. to us

  690. through

  691. Jesus

  692. Christ

  693. Stuart

  694. Townend

  695. in his

  696. great hymn

  697. said

  698. how deep

  699. the

  700. father's

  701. love

  702. for us

  703. how vast

  704. beyond

  705. all measure

  706. that he

  707. should give

  708. his only

  709. son

  710. to make

  711. a wretch

  712. his treasure

  713. why should

  714. I gain

  715. from his

  716. reward

  717. I cannot

  718. give an

  719. answer

  720. but this

  721. I know

  722. with all

  723. my heart

  724. his wounds

  725. have paid

  726. my ransom

  727. we are

  728. reminded

  729. so often

  730. about the

  731. love

  732. of God

  733. a wonderful

  734. love

  735. a love

  736. like no

  737. other

  738. we don't

  739. deserve it

  740. but in

  741. mercy

  742. he shows

  743. it

  744. he is

  745. the maker

  746. of the

  747. heaven

  748. of heavens

  749. the heaven

  750. and heaven

  751. of heavens

  752. the earth

  753. and all

  754. that is in

  755. it

  756. he is a

  757. powerful

  758. he is an

  759. awesome

  760. God

  761. yet the

  762. Lord

  763. has set

  764. his heart

  765. on love

  766. on his

  767. people

  768. it's a

  769. wonderful

  770. reminder

  771. we are

  772. reminded

  773. of God

  774. and his

  775. love

  776. but the

  777. third thing

  778. that we

  779. see here

  780. is that

  781. this

  782. calls

  783. for a

  784. response

  785. this

  786. calls

  787. for a

  788. response

  789. and we

  790. see this

  791. in verse

  792. 16

  793. through to

  794. verse

  795. 22

  796. it

  797. demands

  798. a

  799. response

  800. we think

  801. again of

  802. covenant

  803. here

  804. covenant

  805. this

  806. bond

  807. between

  808. God

  809. and his

  810. people

  811. we are

  812. reminded

  813. of how

  814. God

  815. always

  816. keeps

  817. his

  818. side

  819. and how

  820. we so

  821. often

  822. fail

  823. and yet

  824. it's an

  825. unchanging

  826. love

  827. despite

  828. our

  829. disobedience

  830. but it

  831. calls

  832. for a

  833. response

  834. and that

  835. response

  836. is seen

  837. in verse

  838. 16

  839. circumcise

  840. therefore

  841. the foreskin

  842. of your

  843. heart

  844. and be

  845. no longer

  846. stubborn

  847. for the

  848. Lord your

  849. God

  850. is God

  851. of God

  852. and Lord

  853. of Lords

  854. the great

  855. the mighty

  856. and awesome

  857. God

  858. that is

  859. who

  860. he is

  861. circumcised

  862. therefore

  863. the foreskin

  864. of your

  865. heart

  866. what kind

  867. of response

  868. is this

  869. he's

  870. talking to

  871. them here

  872. and saying

  873. do not

  874. be so

  875. stubborn

  876. do not

  877. be so

  878. stiff

  879. necked

  880. any

  881. longer

  882. instead

  883. circumcise

  884. the foreskin

  885. of your

  886. heart

  887. now

  888. when you're

  889. reading

  890. through the

  891. Old Testament

  892. you see

  893. that

  894. circumcision

  895. was to

  896. be

  897. administered

  898. to

  899. young

  900. boys

  901. it was

  902. their

  903. sign

  904. of

  905. belonging

  906. to

  907. God

  908. it was

  909. an

  910. outward

  911. sign

  912. to

  913. circumcise

  914. the foreskin

  915. was an

  916. outward

  917. sign

  918. but here

  919. God

  920. is saying

  921. circumcise

  922. the heart

  923. and so

  924. how could

  925. they possibly

  926. do this

  927. it wasn't

  928. to be done

  929. in a

  930. physical

  931. way

  932. but it's

  933. saying

  934. it's not

  935. just to be

  936. outwardly

  937. that they

  938. shall

  939. change

  940. the

  941. change

  942. is to

  943. be

  944. inward

  945. the

  946. change

  947. is to

  948. be

  949. within

  950. your

  951. heart

  952. because

  953. we can

  954. so often

  955. be

  956. stubborn

  957. what does

  958. it mean

  959. to be

  960. stubborn

  961. I'm sure

  962. I don't

  963. have to

  964. explain it

  965. to you

  966. I'm

  967. stubborn

  968. for many

  969. of you

  970. are stubborn

  971. we have

  972. it

  973. by nature

  974. in our

  975. stubbornness

  976. there's an

  977. unwillingness

  978. to do

  979. things

  980. any way

  981. but the

  982. way

  983. that we

  984. want

  985. thinking

  986. that we

  987. know

  988. better

  989. and that

  990. was certainly

  991. the case

  992. with the

  993. Lord's

  994. people

  995. in

  996. Moses'

  997. day

  998. it was

  999. with

  1000. Moses

  1001. himself

  1002. you see

  1003. it

  1004. in his

  1005. own

  1006. experiences

  1007. in life

  1008. but God

  1009. is calling

  1010. them here

  1011. no longer

  1012. to be

  1013. stubborn

  1014. like this

  1015. but instead

  1016. to open

  1017. your hearts

  1018. not just

  1019. to have

  1020. an outward

  1021. sign

  1022. that people

  1023. might say

  1024. you belong

  1025. to God

  1026. but so

  1027. that that

  1028. is seen

  1029. from the

  1030. very core

  1031. of your

  1032. being

  1033. which is

  1034. what the

  1035. heart

  1036. is

  1037. that the

  1038. transformation

  1039. comes

  1040. from the

  1041. inside

  1042. out

  1043. so it was

  1044. to be a

  1045. complete

  1046. transformation

  1047. and this

  1048. transformation

  1049. is what

  1050. would lead

  1051. them then

  1052. to walk

  1053. in the ways

  1054. of God

  1055. to fear

  1056. the Lord

  1057. to walk

  1058. in his ways

  1059. to love

  1060. him

  1061. to serve

  1062. him

  1063. and to keep

  1064. his commands

  1065. because

  1066. an outward

  1067. sign only

  1068. doesn't do

  1069. that

  1070. and we

  1071. see that

  1072. ourselves

  1073. today

  1074. when we

  1075. think of

  1076. our own

  1077. signs

  1078. of

  1079. what it

  1080. means to

  1081. be a

  1082. believer

  1083. in the

  1084. New

  1085. Testament

  1086. baptism

  1087. and the

  1088. Lord's

  1089. supper

  1090. these are

  1091. things that

  1092. we can be

  1093. partakers

  1094. of

  1095. we can be

  1096. baptized

  1097. in the

  1098. church

  1099. we can even

  1100. come and

  1101. sit at the

  1102. Lord's

  1103. table

  1104. it can be

  1105. seen by

  1106. others

  1107. but it's

  1108. no guarantee

  1109. that we

  1110. are transformed

  1111. and especially

  1112. transformed

  1113. inwardly

  1114. because if it's

  1115. just an outward

  1116. sign it almost

  1117. doesn't mean

  1118. anything

  1119. and so God

  1120. is here

  1121. saying this

  1122. transformation

  1123. must come

  1124. from within

  1125. and you must

  1126. allow God

  1127. to be the one

  1128. who changes

  1129. you from

  1130. within because

  1131. you cannot

  1132. we cannot

  1133. change

  1134. ourselves

  1135. and so

  1136. what God

  1137. is saying

  1138. here is

  1139. in order

  1140. to live

  1141. right with

  1142. me

  1143. in order

  1144. to serve

  1145. me right

  1146. in order

  1147. to love

  1148. me

  1149. in order

  1150. to keep

  1151. my commands

  1152. circumcise

  1153. the foreskin

  1154. of your heart

  1155. be no longer

  1156. stubborn

  1157. don't feel

  1158. you know

  1159. best yourself

  1160. don't feel

  1161. you can find

  1162. your own way

  1163. in this

  1164. you need

  1165. God

  1166. we need

  1167. God

  1168. every one

  1169. of us

  1170. we are

  1171. stubborn

  1172. in so many

  1173. different ways

  1174. we show it

  1175. so often

  1176. but if we

  1177. want to know

  1178. the love

  1179. of God

  1180. if we want

  1181. to love

  1182. God

  1183. as we

  1184. should

  1185. then our

  1186. hearts

  1187. need to

  1188. change

  1189. our hearts

  1190. need to

  1191. be open

  1192. to him

  1193. a stubborn

  1194. heart

  1195. here and as

  1196. we see it

  1197. throughout

  1198. scripture

  1199. is often

  1200. described as

  1201. the horse

  1202. with a bit

  1203. in its

  1204. mouth

  1205. and when

  1206. the horse

  1207. refuses

  1208. to turn

  1209. but you

  1210. have to

  1211. let God

  1212. take the

  1213. reins

  1214. let God

  1215. take

  1216. command

  1217. and only

  1218. then

  1219. are we

  1220. guided

  1221. in the

  1222. right

  1223. direction

  1224. and so

  1225. we see

  1226. here

  1227. the wonder

  1228. of who

  1229. God is

  1230. we see

  1231. the requirements

  1232. that he

  1233. gives

  1234. in light

  1235. of his

  1236. mercy

  1237. unwilling

  1238. to destroy

  1239. you

  1240. even

  1241. though

  1242. he

  1243. could

  1244. but then

  1245. that

  1246. demands

  1247. a

  1248. requirement

  1249. to love

  1250. the Lord

  1251. to walk

  1252. in his

  1253. ways

  1254. to serve

  1255. him

  1256. to obey

  1257. his word

  1258. it

  1259. brings us

  1260. to a

  1261. reminder

  1262. that he

  1263. is a

  1264. great

  1265. God

  1266. and yet

  1267. he

  1268. still

  1269. loves

  1270. us

  1271. but then

  1272. it asks

  1273. well what

  1274. is to be

  1275. our

  1276. response

  1277. our

  1278. response

  1279. is

  1280. not to

  1281. be

  1282. stubborn

  1283. of

  1284. ourselves

  1285. but to

  1286. open our

  1287. hearts

  1288. to him

  1289. that he

  1290. might come

  1291. in and

  1292. dwell

  1293. in our

  1294. hearts

  1295. and as

  1296. he does

  1297. he directs

  1298. us

  1299. in every

  1300. step

  1301. that we

  1302. take

  1303. the people

  1304. of God

  1305. here in

  1306. Deuteronomy

  1307. were going

  1308. into the

  1309. promised

  1310. land

  1311. to know

  1312. God's

  1313. blessing

  1314. they had

  1315. to be

  1316. obedient

  1317. to him

  1318. the same

  1319. is true

  1320. for ourselves

  1321. today

  1322. we may not

  1323. go into

  1324. the promised

  1325. land

  1326. as it's

  1327. seen here

  1328. but to go

  1329. into eternity

  1330. to know

  1331. his blessings

  1332. in life

  1334. be obedient

  1335. to him

  1336. so what

  1345. more closely

  1346. with him

  1347. to love

  1354. the awesome

  1355. power he

  1356. has to see

  1357. the love

  1358. that he has

  1391. off could

  1392. so easily

  1393. have been

  1394. destroyed

  1395. by you

  1396. but we

  1397. thank you

  1398. that you

  1399. spared us

  1400. by your

  1401. grace

  1402. and by

  1403. your

  1404. mercy

  1405. and teach

  1406. us Lord

  1407. your ways

  1413. you

  1414. teach us

  1415. to obey

  1416. your commands

  1417. and to see

  1418. the wonder

  1419. of all

  1420. that you

  1421. do for

  1422. us

  1423. and to

  1424. have our

  1425. hearts

  1426. opened

  1427. by your

  1428. spirit

  1429. to receive

  1430. all of

  1431. these

  1432. things

  1433. for we

  1434. ask it

  1435. in your

  1471. the

  1472. Psalm

  1473. it

  1474. shows

  1475. us

  1476. how

  1477. the

  1478. word

  1479. of

  1480. God

  1481. directs
