  1. Well, let's turn back to our reading in Jeremiah.

  2. We're going to read again at verse 2 of chapter 31, verse 2 and 3.

  3. Thus says the Lord,

  4. The people who survived the sword found grace in the wilderness

  5. ! When Israel sought for rest,

  6. the Lord appeared to him from far away.

  7. I have loved you with an everlasting love.

  8. Therefore, I have continued my faithfulness to you.

  9. Next weekend, God willing, we have our communion weekend

  10. when we look forward to visiting preachers coming to minister to us.

  11. We look forward to being under God's word, taking communion.

  12. But what does it mean to you?

  13. What does that mean to you?

  14. We hear phrases at this time such as taking communion,

  15. sitting at the Lord's table, being or becoming a member.

  16. We hear about meeting the session.

  17. And perhaps we know little of what these things mean,

  18. or perhaps we're very familiar with what these things mean.

  19. What does it mean for you?

  20. Is it something you are going to do?

  21. Or do you see it as just something that is for others?

  22. Well, at the heart of communion,

  23. at the heart of what we are doing,

  24. it's not any of the things I've mentioned.

  25. At the heart of it is remembering what has been done for us by Jesus Christ.

  26. By remembering what he did for us at the cross that he gave his life.

  27. Because we, by our nature, are sinners.

  28. Every one of us is that.

  29. We are all in the same boat when it comes to being sinners.

  30. But Jesus came to save his people from their sins.

  31. And he did so by coming to give his own life.

  32. So how are you sitting here today?

  33. Or how are you sitting at home listening online?

  34. When you hear all of these things,

  35. are you thinking,

  36. I am glad to be numbered among those who will come

  37. and sit at the Lord's table and remember my precious Savior?

  38. Remember his precious steadfast love

  39. that saves me from my sins.

  40. Or are you sitting here today or listening

  41. and thinking,

  42. I wish,

  43. how I wish I could do that.

  44. How I would long to come

  45. and just show

  46. that sense of giving to the Lord,

  47. remembering him

  48. for what he has done for me.

  49. But I'm not good enough.

  50. Or perhaps you're sitting here today or listening

  51. and you're thinking,

  52. it's not for me.

  53. Not just now.

  54. Not at this time.

  55. Maybe another time.

  56. It's just not for me.

  57. Whatever situation you find yourself in today,

  58. whatever situation you find yourself in

  59. in this coming week

  60. as we're thinking about approaching the Lord's Supper,

  61. one thing we can say for sure,

  62. we can only do it

  63. by the grace of God to us.

  64. The grace that he gives

  65. and by faith in him

  66. and him alone.

  67. So this morning,

  68. we're going to look at this passage

  69. in Jeremiah,

  70. a passage that reminds us

  71. about this grace,

  72. the wonder of God's grace.

  73. And it's grace even in the midst

  74. of hard times.

  75. Grace even in the midst

  76. of times of difficulty,

  77. times of struggle,

  78. times of challenge.

  79. It's a grace that he gives.

  80. And Jeremiah,

  81. if you're familiar with the book at all,

  82. you say,

  83. well,

  84. how can you find grace

  85. in Jeremiah?

  86. Because as you read through it,

  87. you see,

  88. you might say,

  89. there's so little

  90. here about grace.

  91. Jeremiah,

  92. the prophet,

  93. was so often

  94. one associated

  95. with bringing

  96. bad news,

  97. associated with

  98. a sense of hopelessness.

  99. And you can read through

  100. the whole of the book

  101. of Jeremiah

  102. and think,

  103. well,

  104. where is hope found

  105. in the midst

  106. of this book?

  107. One person

  108. described it in this way,

  109. 52 chapters

  110. of almost uninterrupted

  111. gloom

  112. and doom.

  113. It's not.

  114. It is God's word

  115. to us.

  116. It's not gloom

  117. and doom.

  118. Yes,

  119. there's challenges

  120. in it.

  121. But it's not like

  122. what we see

  123. on the news today.

  124. If you watch the news

  125. at all in these days,

  126. that is doom

  127. and gloom

  128. all the time.

  129. There's so much

  130. sorrow,

  131. so much sadness,

  132. so many things

  133. going on around us.

  134. There's almost

  135. nothing positive.

  136. It used to be

  137. you could watch the news

  138. and you would get

  139. that story at the end

  140. when they would say,

  141. and finally,

  142. and there was

  143. something positive

  144. to speak about,

  145. some good news story,

  146. but seldom

  147. do you even

  148. see that now.

  149. But as you look

  150. at Jeremiah

  151. and as you look

  152. at the word of God,

  153. the Bible as a whole,

  154. what you see

  155. is a story

  156. about God's people

  157. and the journey

  158. that they are on

  159. and reminders,

  160. constant reminders

  161. as you're going

  162. through it of sin,

  163. of waywardness.

  164. We see all that

  165. in these verses

  166. that we're going

  167. to look at

  168. together today,

  169. but we see

  170. a God who cares.

  171. And a God

  172. who calls

  173. his people.

  174. And there are

  175. a number of

  176. encouragements

  177. in the book

  178. of Jeremiah.

  179. It's not always

  180. just that everything's

  181. positive.

  182. It's not.

  183. There are challenges too,

  184. but there are still

  185. encouragements in it.

  186. One of my own

  187. very personal ones

  188. is from this book,

  189. chapter 8,

  190. verse 20,

  191. a verse there

  192. that says,

  193. the harvest is past,

  194. the summer has ended,

  195. and we are not saved.

  196. It sounds gloomy.

  197. The harvest has passed,

  198. the summer has ended,

  199. still you're not saved,

  200. and yet it was a verse

  201. that was used

  202. in my own conversion,

  203. preached nearly 23 years ago

  204. by the man

  205. who's now

  206. out into the moderator

  207. in Shabbos.

  208. And those words

  209. spoke to me,

  210. challenged me,

  211. but also spoke

  212. about the grace

  213. of God.

  214. How,

  215. although we can be

  216. in that situation,

  217. there is hope

  218. as we look to Jesus.

  219. One of the best

  220. known verses

  221. in Jeremiah

  222. is Jeremiah 29,

  223. 11.

  224. For I know the plans

  225. I have for you,

  226. declares the Lord,

  227. plans for welfare

  228. and not for evil,

  229. to give you a future

  230. and a hope.

  231. These may be words

  232. that you've heard

  233. and know well.

  234. They're encouraging words,

  235. but they're in the midst

  236. of difficulty

  237. and in the midst

  238. of challenge.

  239. And so too,

  240. as we turn

  241. to the end

  242. of chapter 30

  243. and into chapter 31,

  244. we see both challenge

  245. and encouragement

  246. in these verses

  247. as well.

  248. And what we have

  249. is surrounded here

  250. by the grace

  251. of God.

  252. And you see that

  253. in verse 2,

  254. which is really

  255. our text,

  256. if you like,

  257. the people

  258. who survived

  259. the sword

  260. found grace

  261. in the wilderness.

  262. Grace

  263. in the wilderness.

  264. And it's these,

  265. that word,

  266. grace in the wilderness,

  267. that I want us

  268. to think about.

  269. And we see grace

  270. here in three

  271. different ways.

  272. At the end

  273. of chapter 30,

  274. we have a grace

  275. that warns.

  276. A grace that warns.

  277. And then as you

  278. go into chapter 31,

  279. we have a grace

  280. then that reminds,

  281. and then thirdly,

  282. we'll see we have

  283. a grace that renews.

  284. A grace that warns,

  285. a grace that reminds,

  286. and a grace that renews.

  287. So the first thing

  288. we want to see here

  289. is a grace that warns.

  290. And we see that

  291. at the end

  292. of chapter 30.

  293. Jeremiah had

  294. a very long ministry.

  295. He ministered

  296. to the people

  297. for about 50 years.

  298. It's hard to imagine

  299. preaching and ministering

  300. for 50 years

  301. in any kind of situation.

  302. But Jeremiah's situation

  303. was one where

  304. it was 50 years

  305. where no one listened.

  306. There's no record

  307. of anyone repenting,

  308. of believing.

  309. Nobody listened.

  310. They mocked him,

  311. they shunned him,

  312. told him to go away.

  313. They wanted nothing

  314. to do with him.

  315. Imagine 50 years of ministry

  316. and no one's listening.

  317. difficult.

  318. But it does not mean

  319. that his ministry

  320. wasn't fruitful

  321. because he was faithful

  322. to the word of God.

  323. And although it took time,

  324. the people did come back.

  325. But much of Jeremiah's ministry

  326. was of giving warning.

  327. And we see that

  328. at the end of chapter 30.

  329. In verse 23,

  330. Behold the storm

  331. of the Lord.

  332. There is a warning here.

  333. But it's a gracious warning.

  334. It's a warning

  335. that comes

  336. from God.

  337. Silence at times

  338. can be bliss.

  339. There are times,

  340. I'm sure,

  341. every one of us

  342. would say,

  343. I just want to get away

  344. and have a time to myself,

  345. a time of peace,

  346. a time of silence,

  347. to get away

  348. from the noise

  349. and the busyness of life

  350. and just find a place,

  351. a place of solitude.

  352. It's lovely

  353. to get that kind of place.

  354. We need it

  355. from time to time.

  356. But silence

  357. can sometimes

  358. be an awful thing.

  359. Silence

  360. when you're waiting

  361. for news

  362. of maybe a loved one

  363. who's missing.

  364. It's an awful thing

  365. not to hear anything.

  366. It's an anxious time.

  367. Silence

  368. when you're crying

  369. for help

  370. and nobody's hearing.

  371. silence

  372. from someone

  373. you love

  374. who's not speaking

  375. to you.

  376. We can know

  377. and maybe you do know

  378. these kinds

  379. of situations

  380. for yourself

  381. where silence

  382. can be agony.

  383. Silence

  384. can be painful.

  385. But where do we see

  386. the greatest silence

  387. that took place?

  388. It's not for ourselves

  389. but it's what was done

  390. for us

  391. and especially

  392. as we think

  393. of a communion week

  394. it's where we look

  395. to as we approach

  396. a communion season

  397. it's at the cross

  398. where Jesus there

  399. suffered

  400. for our sin.

  401. Where as we see here

  402. behold the storm

  403. of the Lord

  404. that was coming

  405. upon the people.

  406. Behold

  407. the storm

  408. of the Lord

  409. that we can have

  410. in our lives.

  411. As we look

  412. to the cross

  413. we see

  414. the way that Jesus

  415. suffered for us.

  416. in Matthew 27

    Matthew 27:45

  417. verse 45

  418. now from the sixth

  419. hour there was

  420. darkness over the land

  421. until the ninth hour

  422. and about the ninth hour

  423. Jesus cried out

  424. with a loud voice

  425. saying

  426. Eli Eli

  427. lemma sabachthani

  428. that is my God

  429. my God

  430. why

  431. have you forsaken me?

  432. There was silence.

  433. but when we see here

  434. a storm warning

  435. we see it is

  436. a gracious warning

  437. because we see

  438. that God is not silent

  439. but God is speaking.

  440. God is warning.

  441. And Jeremiah

  442. was warning

  443. his people

  444. here as well.

  445. He was warning them

  446. to learn

  447. to heed

  448. these warnings.

  449. Professor John L. Mackay

  450. who was a lecturer

  451. in the

  452. Free Church College

  453. he wrote a commentary

  454. on Jeremiah

  455. and one of the points

  456. he makes

  457. on these verses

  458. is

  459. he says

  460. there is a prevalent

  461. tendency

  462. to grasp

  463. the promises

  464. of the Lord

  465. and to forget

  466. the warnings

  467. that he gives.

  468. A warning

  469. is given

  470. that the future

  471. time of blessing

  472. and its continuance

  473. are not to be

  474. lightly assumed

  475. as inevitable.

  476. We must take care

  477. not to repeat

  478. the mistakes

  479. of the past.

  480. What mistakes?

  481. Well as you look

  482. at this passage

  483. and as the end

  484. of chapter 31

  485. Jeremiah is warning

  486. his people

  487. behold the storm

  488. of the Lord

  489. he is warning them

  490. that they have

  491. made mistakes

  492. that sin leads

  493. us down

  494. the wrong path.

  495. The mistakes

  496. of taking God

  497. lightly

  498. of not listening

  499. of rejecting

  500. him

  501. they did it

  502. for 50 years

  503. they didn't

  504. listen to a word

  505. that Jeremiah

  506. was saying.

  507. You do it

  508. I do it.

  509. We don't listen.

  510. We take God

  511. lightly.

  512. We can reject

  513. him so easily.

  514. And we can see

  515. that there is

  516. doom

  517. and gloom.

  518. The storm

  519. of the Lord

  520. can feel

  521. very much

  522. upon us.

  523. There's a word

  524. in the dictionary

  525. and it's

  526. Jeremiah.

  527. And what does

  528. it mean?

  529. Well if you look

  530. at what the

  531. definition of

  532. Jeremiah

  533. it means

  534. a prolonged

  535. lamentation

  536. or mournful

  537. complaint.

  538. That's very much

  539. from Jeremiah.

  540. You can see

  541. it so clearly.

  542. Do you feel

  543. Jeremiah today?

  544. Do you feel

  545. that sense

  546. of just the

  547. weight

  548. of everything

  549. upon you?

  550. the weight

  551. of sin

  552. the fears

  553. of life

  554. the worries

  555. the anxieties

  556. everything that

  557. just comes

  558. our way

  559. so often.

  560. We can feel

  561. Jeremiah

  562. doom

  563. and gloom

  564. but yet

  565. what we see

  566. here is that

  567. God is still

  568. in control

  569. because even

  570. as it speaks

  571. of a storm

  572. here

  573. he says

  574. in verse

  575. 24

  576. the fierce

  577. anger of

  578. the Lord

  579. will not

  580. turn back

  581. until he

  582. has executed

  583. and accomplished

  584. the intentions

  585. of his mind.

  586. In the latter

  587. days you will

  588. understand this.

  589. God has a

  590. plan

  591. and a purpose

  592. even in the

  593. storms.

  594. Even in all

  595. these things

  596. God is saying

  597. this is part

  598. of my purpose

  599. for you

  600. in the days

  601. of Jeremiah

  602. and he says

  603. it to ourselves

  604. as well.

  605. These are my

  606. purposes for you

  607. and in the

  608. latter days

  609. you will

  610. understand

  611. that there

  612. are times

  613. that we

  614. cannot

  615. understand

  616. things.

  617. Just like

  618. the hymn writer

  619. William Cowper

  620. said

  621. God moves

  622. in a mysterious

  623. way

  624. his wonders

  625. to perform

  626. he plants

  627. his footsteps

  628. in the sea

  629. and rides

  630. upon the storm.

  631. He moves

  632. in mysterious

  633. ways

  634. but

  635. as it says

  636. he rides

  637. upon the storm.

  638. And so even

  639. as we see

  640. here the

  641. warning

  642. behold

  643. the storm

  644. of the Lord

  645. the Lord

  646. is riding

  647. on that

  648. storm

  649. and he

  650. is with

  651. his people.

  652. And so we

  653. see the grace

  654. of a warning.

  655. But the second

  656. thing we see

  657. here is the

  658. grace that

  659. reminds

  660. the grace

  661. that reminds

  662. us

  663. of all the

  664. wonders of

  665. God

  666. when we feel

  667. that we are

  668. in a wilderness

  669. at times.

  670. And that's

  671. seen as you

  672. go into

  673. chapter 31

  674. and verse

  675. 1 to 3.

  676. At that

  677. time

  678. there is a

  679. reminder here

  680. that God

  681. does not

  682. forget.

  683. At that

  684. time declares

  685. the Lord

  686. I will be

  687. the God

  688. of all

  689. the clans

  690. of Israel.

  691. He's not

  692. silent

  693. he's not

  694. absent

  695. he is very

  696. much

  697. with us.

  698. John L.

  699. Mackay's

  700. words

  701. we must

  702. not repeat

  703. the mistakes

  704. of the

  705. past.

  706. That is

  707. what Jeremiah

  708. is focusing

  709. on here.

  710. Thus

  711. in verse

  712. 2 the

  713. people who

  714. survived the

  715. sword found

  716. grace in

  717. the wilderness.

  718. He takes

  719. them back.

  720. He takes

  721. them back to

  722. the mistakes

  723. they made

  724. previously in

  725. the days of

  726. Moses as the

  727. children of

  728. Israel were

  729. led from

  730. Egypt to

  731. the promised

  732. land but

  733. journeying

  734. through the

  735. wilderness.

  736. They found

  737. grace in

  738. the wilderness.

  739. But he

  740. also is

  741. taking them

  742. forward here

  743. as well.

  744. He's speaking

  745. to the people

  746. in Jeremiah's

  747. day who

  748. were going

  749. to be

  750. taken captive

  751. by Babylon

  752. a powerful

  753. nation.

  754. They were

  755. going to be

  756. taken into

  757. exile again

  758. into the

  759. wilderness

  760. again but

  761. they would

  762. find grace

  763. in the

  764. wilderness

  765. there too.

  766. So what

  767. does this

  768. remind us

  769. of?

  770. Well it

  771. reminds us

  772. that sin

  773. leads to

  774. this

  775. an exile

  776. from God.

  777. It leads

  778. us into

  779. this wilderness

  780. that the

  781. tragedy of

  782. sin is

  783. that keeps

  784. God at

  785. an arm's

  786. distance.

  787. And yet

  788. grace calls

  789. us in

  790. the wilderness.

  791. Grace speaks

  792. to us in

  793. the wilderness.

  794. The people

  795. who survived

  796. the sword

  797. found grace

  798. in the

  799. wilderness.

  800. Think of

  801. that in

  802. your own

  803. life.

  804. What has

  805. sin done

  806. in your

  807. life?

  808. What is

  809. it doing

  810. now?

  811. Sin is

  812. always active

  813. all around

  814. us and

  815. in us.

  816. And what

  817. sin is

  818. doing is

  819. keeping us

  820. from God.

  821. Keeping God

  822. at an arm's

  823. length at

  824. times.

  825. Even as a

  826. Christian.

  827. Even as

  828. those who

  829. will come

  830. and sit

  831. at the

  832. Lord's

  833. table.

  834. In our

  835. hearts

  836. right now

  837. we can

  838. feel a

  839. sense of

  840. that sin

  841. a distance

  842. from God.

  843. sin has

  844. that tendency

  845. to just

  846. drag us

  847. back into

  848. the wilderness.

  849. And all

  850. we feel is

  851. a sense of

  852. unworthiness,

  853. of burden.

  854. And what

  855. can we

  856. do?

  857. Well we

  858. can look

  859. to this

  860. grace.

  861. The grace

  862. that has

  863. been shown.

  864. Because it

  865. says they

  866. found grace

  867. in the

  868. wilderness

  869. when Israel

  870. sought

  871. for rest.

  872. When they

  873. looked for

  874. rest.

  875. John

  876. Newton is

  877. the author

  878. of that

  879. hymn

  880. Amazing

  881. Grace.

  882. And

  883. Jeremiah

  884. 31 was

  885. one of

  886. his

  887. favorite

  888. passages.

  889. He often

  890. returned to

  891. it because

  892. it reminded

  893. him so

  894. much of

  895. his own

  896. life.

  897. He was

  898. one who

  899. had been

  900. in the

  901. wilderness

  902. living his

  903. life in

  904. a wild

  905. way,

  906. away from

  907. God.

  908. He knew

  909. the distance.

  910. He felt

  911. like that

  912. wretch that

  913. he describes

  914. himself as.

  915. grace.

  916. But he

  917. found grace

  918. in the

  919. wilderness.

  920. Grace that

  921. saved a

  922. wretch like

  923. me, he

  924. says.

  925. He found

  926. the Lord

  927. in the midst

  928. of his own

  929. storm, in

  930. the midst of

  931. his own

  932. wilderness.

  933. And Israel

  934. it says here

  935. they found

  936. rest when

  937. they sought,

  938. they found

  939. that grace

  940. when they

  941. sought for

  942. rest.

  943. And are

  944. you seeking

  945. for that

  946. rest?

  947. Are you

  948. longing for

  949. that rest?

  950. That rest,

  951. that grace

  952. when you

  953. feel like

  954. you're just

  955. in the

  956. wilderness?

  957. I learned

  958. about something

  959. this week

  960. I'd never

  961. heard of

  962. before.

  963. It was

  964. about a

  965. stone that

  966. would be

  967. familiar out

  968. on the

  969. moors many

  970. years ago.

  971. You can

  972. still find

  973. them in

  974. different

  975. places,

  976. but when

  977. the shillings

  978. were used

  979. more often

  980. for tending

  981. the sheep

  982. and the

  983. cattle out

  984. in the

  985. moor during

  986. the summer

  987. months,

  988. there was

  989. a stone

  990. that would

  991. be close

  992. nearby to

  993. the shilling

  994. and it

  995. was called

  996. a

  997. clachtasich,

  998. or an

  999. itching

  1000. stone,

  1001. because the

  1002. moorland is

  1003. barren in

  1004. many ways.

  1005. But as you

  1006. know if you

  1007. go out there

  1008. there's all

  1009. kinds of,

  1010. when you see

  1011. animals they're

  1012. always itching

  1013. whether it's

  1014. midges or

  1015. ticks or

  1016. whatever it

  1017. is and

  1018. there's no

  1019. relief for

  1020. them.

  1021. But these

  1022. stones would

  1023. be erected

  1024. beside the

  1025. shillings,

  1026. quite large

  1027. stones about

  1028. the size of

  1029. a wooden

  1030. strainer,

  1031. a fence

  1032. strainer,

  1033. and they'd

  1034. be put into

  1035. the ground

  1036. and erected

  1037. so that the

  1038. sheep or the

  1039. cattle could

  1040. come and

  1041. find relief

  1042. in scratching

  1043. themselves against

  1044. this stone.

  1045. Well when we

  1046. think of our

  1047. lives, what is

  1048. the stone that

  1049. gives relief

  1050. to us?

  1051. when we

  1052. have that

  1053. scratch, that

  1054. sin you

  1055. could almost

  1056. describe as

  1057. an unscratchable

  1058. itch, we

  1059. just can't get

  1060. to the heart

  1061. of it.

  1062. Where is our

  1063. stone?

  1064. Where is our

  1065. rest found?

  1066. Well it's in

  1067. the stone, the

  1068. rock that is

  1069. Jesus Christ.

  1070. When Jesus

  1071. says in

  1072. Matthew 11

  1073. 28,

  1074. come to me

  1075. all you who

  1076. labor and are

  1077. heavy laden,

  1078. I will give you

  1079. rest, I will

  1080. give you

  1081. relief.

  1082. He's saying

  1083. seek me, and

  1084. when you seek

  1085. me you will

  1086. find me, when

  1087. you seek me

  1088. with your

  1089. whole heart, and

  1090. I will give

  1091. you rest.

  1092. They found

  1093. grace in the

  1094. wilderness when

  1095. they sought

  1096. for rest, so

  1097. can you, so

  1098. can I.

  1099. When we seek

  1100. the Lord, when

  1101. we look for

  1102. his grace, when

  1103. we come to

  1104. him, the

  1105. wilderness can

  1106. be a horrible

  1107. place to be.

  1108. But there is

  1109. still grace

  1110. there for us

  1111. when we seek

  1112. the Lord.

  1113. You think of

  1114. the prodigal

  1115. son.

  1116. There's so

  1117. much of that

  1118. in his life,

  1119. where you

  1120. think of him

  1121. going away

  1122. from his

  1123. father, into

  1124. the wilderness,

  1125. into the

  1126. wilderness, there

  1127. was life away

  1128. from the

  1129. father, thinking

  1130. it was the

  1131. bliss that he

  1132. was looking

  1133. for.

  1134. But it

  1135. wasn't.

  1136. But when

  1137. he came to

  1138. his senses,

  1139. he returned

  1140. to his

  1141. father.

  1142. Charles Spurgeon

  1143. has a great

  1144. way of showing

  1145. that coming

  1146. home.

  1147. Charles Spurgeon

  1148. said the

  1149. prodigal saw

  1150. his need to

  1151. come home.

  1152. But listen to

  1153. this, his

  1154. last steps

  1155. before entering

  1156. the house

  1157. were with a

  1158. kiss still

  1159. warm upon

  1160. his cheek

  1161. and the

  1162. welcome still

  1163. musical in

  1164. his ears.

  1165. Isn't that a

  1166. wonderful way

  1167. of looking at

  1168. it?

  1169. How could he

  1170. say that?

  1171. Because of

  1172. what the

  1173. father did.

  1174. the father

  1175. ran to

  1176. the son.

  1177. The son

  1178. knew that

  1179. grace in

  1180. the wilderness

  1181. and the

  1182. father came

  1183. from afar.

  1184. And you

  1185. see that in

  1186. verse 3

  1187. here, the

  1188. Lord appeared

  1189. to him

  1190. from far

  1191. away saying,

  1192. I have

  1193. loved you

  1194. with an

  1195. everlasting

  1196. love.

  1197. That is the

  1198. love of

  1199. God the

  1200. father, shown

  1201. to the

  1202. prodigal and

  1203. shown to

  1204. all of his

  1205. people who

  1206. are in the

  1207. wilderness, but

  1208. seek after

  1209. the Lord.

  1210. the kiss

  1211. still warm

  1212. on his

  1213. cheek because

  1214. the father

  1215. had run to

  1216. him.

  1217. He is

  1218. faithful and

  1219. he gives

  1220. us amazing

  1221. reminders of

  1222. a grace that

  1223. loves, an

  1224. everlasting

  1225. love.

  1226. So we are

  1227. to come,

  1228. we are to

  1229. come to

  1230. seek him

  1231. and not to

  1232. come to the

  1233. Lord's

  1234. supper praising

  1235. ourselves,

  1236. slapping our

  1237. own back,

  1238. saying,

  1239. well done

  1240. you.

  1241. But to

  1242. come sometimes

  1243. broken,

  1244. sometimes weary,

  1245. sometimes just

  1246. with that

  1247. weight still

  1248. on, but

  1249. coming thankful

  1250. for the

  1251. love that

  1252. he has

  1253. shown.

  1254. That love

  1255. that he

  1256. speaks of

  1257. here, I

  1258. have loved

  1259. you with

  1260. an everlasting

  1261. love.

  1262. Therefore I

  1263. have continued

  1264. my faithfulness

  1265. to you.

  1266. he didn't

  1267. leave his

  1268. people.

  1269. Even though

  1270. you could

  1271. say they

  1272. deserved it,

  1273. the same is

  1274. true for us.

  1275. We feel we

  1276. didn't deserve

  1277. his grace.

  1278. But it is

  1279. his love

  1280. that's without

  1281. beginning and

  1282. without end.

  1283. That is the

  1284. love that we

  1285. are to look

  1286. to.

  1287. And if we

  1288. know that

  1289. grace,

  1290. if we love

  1291. and know that

  1292. love of God,

  1293. then we are

  1294. to come.

  1295. Come and

  1296. seek him

  1297. and find

  1298. that grace

  1299. in the

  1300. wilderness

  1301. that gives

  1302. us rest.

  1303. The final

  1304. thing we

  1305. see here is

  1306. that grace

  1307. that renews.

  1308. I said

  1309. earlier that

  1310. when we

  1311. watch the

  1312. news, it

  1313. seldom now

  1314. we get

  1315. that final

  1316. story,

  1317. and finally

  1318. there's some

  1319. good news.

  1320. But here we

  1321. see that what

  1322. Jeremiah is

  1323. saying in this

  1324. section is

  1325. and finally

  1326. there is

  1327. good news.

  1328. truth.

  1329. Truly,

  1330. there is

  1331. good news

  1332. because this

  1333. closing section

  1334. of this

  1335. passage really

  1336. is a sense

  1337. of rejoicing.

  1338. A rejoicing

  1339. that God

  1340. is able to

  1341. help.

  1342. God is able

  1343. to give.

  1344. And you

  1345. could go

  1346. back to

  1347. verse 18

  1348. of chapter

  1349. 30 where

  1350. it says,

  1351. There is

  1352. hope.

  1353. There is

  1354. hope.

  1355. There is

  1356. hope.

  1357. But then you

  1358. see it again

  1359. in verse 4

  1360. and 5 of

  1361. chapter 31.

  1362. with that

  1363. repeated

  1364. phase again

  1365. three times

  1366. in these

  1367. two verses.

  1368. And look at

  1369. what he

  1370. says,

  1371. Again I

  1372. will build

  1373. you and

  1374. you shall

  1375. be built

  1376. up,

  1377. virginess.

  1378. Again you

  1379. shall adorn

  1380. yourself with

  1381. tambourines

  1382. and shall

  1383. go forth in

  1384. the dance

  1385. of the

  1386. merrymakers.

  1387. Again you

  1388. shall plant

  1389. vineyards in

  1390. the mountains

  1391. of Samaria.

  1392. Three times

  1393. he says

  1394. again.

  1395. Because there

  1396. is a sense

  1397. of renewing

  1398. here.

  1399. the blessings

  1400. that they

  1401. had enjoyed

  1402. in the

  1403. past they

  1404. are going

  1405. to enjoy

  1406. again.

  1407. The people's

  1408. lives were

  1409. ruined by

  1410. sin.

  1411. And they

  1412. were going

  1413. to be

  1414. ruined.

  1415. They were

  1416. going to

  1417. be taken

  1418. into exile.

  1419. Their

  1420. homes would

  1421. be gone.

  1422. Their joy

  1423. would be

  1424. gone.

  1425. Their

  1426. vineyards

  1427. would be

  1428. gone.

  1429. All these

  1430. things that

  1431. were important

  1432. and precious

  1433. to them

  1434. all gone.

  1435. Brought

  1436. into the

  1437. wilderness.

  1438. wilderness.

  1439. But here

  1440. is God

  1441. saying I

  1442. will bring

  1443. you home.

  1444. I will

  1445. renew.

  1446. I will

  1447. restore

  1448. you.

  1449. And so

  1450. you see

  1451. the three

  1452. things that

  1453. will

  1454. restore

  1455. their

  1456. homes,

  1457. their joy,

  1458. their

  1459. vineyards.

  1460. All that

  1461. was important

  1462. for life

  1463. was going

  1464. to be

  1465. renewed.

  1466. There was

  1467. going to

  1468. be a

  1469. newness

  1470. to it.

  1471. Even in

  1472. the midst

  1473. of the

  1474. mysterious

  1475. ways of

  1476. God

  1477. working.

  1478. William

  1479. Cowper's

  1480. hymn goes

  1481. on to

  1482. say,

  1483. Judge

  1484. not the

  1485. Lord

  1486. by feeble

  1487. sense,

  1488. but trust

  1489. him for

  1490. his grace

  1491. behind a

  1492. frowning

  1493. providence.

  1494. He hides

  1495. a smiling

  1496. face.

  1497. His

  1498. purposes

  1499. will ripen

  1500. fast,

  1501. unfolding

  1502. every hour.

  1503. The bud

  1504. may have a

  1505. bitter taste,

  1506. but sweet

  1507. will be the

  1508. flower.

  1509. You see

  1510. there just

  1511. how he's

  1512. speaking of

  1513. the frowning

  1514. providence,

  1515. not understanding,

  1516. and yet

  1517. God is

  1518. in control

  1519. and his

  1520. grace

  1521. unfolding

  1522. his

  1523. purposes

  1524. hour by

  1525. hour,

  1526. so that

  1527. even when

  1528. there's a

  1529. bitter taste

  1530. initially,

  1531. the flower

  1532. will be

  1533. sweet in

  1534. the end.

  1535. And what

  1536. you see

  1537. here is

  1538. that journey

  1539. of God

  1540. leading his

  1541. people from

  1542. warning to

  1543. reminding

  1544. them and

  1545. then finally

  1546. to renewing,

  1547. to say

  1548. that yes,

  1549. you lost

  1550. it all in

  1551. the wilderness,

  1552. but again

  1553. you will have

  1554. all of these

  1555. things.

  1556. But what

  1557. is the

  1558. most important

  1559. thing you

  1560. see restored

  1561. here?

  1562. It's what

  1563. you have

  1564. in verse

  1565. 6.

  1566. It's great

  1567. that they

  1568. have their

  1569. homes,

  1570. their joy,

  1571. their vineyards

  1572. restored,

  1573. but look at

  1574. verse 6.

  1575. for there

  1576. shall be a

  1577. day when

  1578. watchmen

  1579. will call

  1580. in the

  1581. whole country

  1582. of Ephraim,

  1583. arise and

  1584. let us go

  1585. up to

  1586. Sion,

  1587. to the

  1588. Lord our

  1589. God.

  1590. What is

  1591. being restored

  1592. there?

  1593. A right

  1594. worship.

  1595. A right

  1596. worship.

  1597. Let us

  1598. go and

  1599. worship the

  1600. Lord our

  1601. God.

  1602. The watchmen

  1603. had a vital

  1604. role.

  1605. They were

  1606. often the

  1607. ones who

  1608. warned of

  1609. danger

  1610. approaching.

  1611. They were

  1612. often the

  1613. ones who

  1614. warned of

  1615. seasons changing,

  1616. of new

  1617. moons and

  1618. all of

  1619. these things,

  1620. times of

  1621. harvest,

  1622. times of

  1623. festival.

  1624. Well here

  1625. they are

  1626. saying the

  1627. day is

  1628. coming when

  1629. the watchmen

  1630. will call,

  1631. arise,

  1632. let us go

  1633. to Sion,

  1634. to the

  1635. Lord our

  1636. God.

  1637. Do you

  1638. see the

  1639. change that's

  1640. taken place?

  1641. Where God

  1642. is speaking

  1643. initially in

  1644. verse 22 of

  1645. chapter 30,

  1646. and you

  1647. shall be my

  1648. people and

  1649. I will be

  1650. your God.

  1651. It's in the

  1652. future, but

  1653. here is a

  1654. day when that

  1655. is renewed.

  1656. Let us go

  1657. up to

  1658. Sion, to

  1659. the Lord

  1660. our God,

  1661. a relationship

  1662. restored.

  1663. That is what

  1664. we long for.

  1665. It's great

  1666. to have

  1667. material

  1668. blessings,

  1669. the blessings

  1670. of homes,

  1671. of joy,

  1672. of vineyards,

  1673. Jeremiah is

  1674. saying, but

  1675. your greatest

  1676. blessing of

  1677. all will

  1678. be to once

  1679. again worship

  1680. the Lord

  1681. as your

  1682. God, a

  1683. relationship

  1684. restored.

  1685. Our lives

  1686. in the

  1687. wilderness are

  1688. hindered by

  1689. sin, but

  1690. the good

  1691. news is

  1692. there is

  1693. grace in

  1694. the wilderness.

  1695. And that

  1696. that grace

  1697. is able

  1698. to renew.

  1699. What do

  1700. you want in

  1701. this communion

  1702. weekend?

  1703. Surely, above

  1704. all, we

  1705. want to

  1706. come and

  1707. worship the

  1708. Lord our

  1709. God, to

  1710. give him

  1711. that praise,

  1712. that worship

  1713. that he is

  1714. due.

  1715. And it

  1716. comes if we

  1717. see the

  1718. grace that

  1719. he has

  1720. shown.

  1721. If we

  1722. seek after

  1723. that grace

  1724. as he

  1725. speaks of

  1726. there in

  1727. verse 2,

  1728. the people

  1729. who survived

  1730. the sword

  1731. found grace

  1732. in the

  1733. wilderness

  1734. when Israel

  1735. sought for

  1736. rest.

  1737. Seek that

  1738. rest.

  1739. Find it

  1740. in the

  1741. Lord Jesus

  1742. Christ.

  1743. And then

  1744. you can

  1745. come,

  1746. arise,

  1747. let us

  1748. go,

  1749. and worship

  1750. the Lord

  1751. our God.

  1752. John

  1753. Newton said,

  1754. it was grace

  1755. that taught

  1756. my heart

  1757. to fear,

  1758. and grace

  1759. my fears

  1760. relieved.

  1761. How precious

  1762. did that

  1763. grace appear,

  1764. the hour

  1765. I first

  1766. believed.

  1767. May you

  1768. find how

  1769. precious this

  1770. grace is,

  1771. even in the

  1772. wilderness,

  1773. even in the

  1774. trials, the

  1775. storms of

  1776. life, God's

  1777. warning is

  1778. there graciously.

  1779. God reminds

  1780. us of his

  1781. grace again

  1782. and again,

  1783. and God

  1784. is able

  1785. to renew.

  1786. Let us

  1787. pray.

  1788. Lord, our

  1789. gracious God,

  1790. we thank you

  1791. for your

  1792. word, we

  1793. thank you

  1794. for your

  1795. grace, and

  1796. we pray to

  1797. seek it with

  1798. all our

  1799. hearts, and

  1800. to know the

  1801. rest that you

  1802. are able to

  1803. give to us

  1804. through our

  1805. Lord Jesus

  1806. Christ, as

  1807. we ask all

  1808. these things

  1809. in Jesus'

  1810. name.

  1811. Amen.

  1812. We'll

  1813. conclude now

  1814. by singing

  1815. to God's

  1816. praise in

  1817. Psalm 4

  1818. once again.

  1819. We'll sing

  1820. these last

  1821. stanzas from

  1822. verse 6.

  1823. Oh, who

  1824. can show us

  1825. any good?

  1826. I hear so

  1827. many say,

  1828. O Lord,

  1829. shine on us

  1830. with your

  1831. light, show

  1832. us your

  1833. face, I

  1834. pray.

  1835. We'll sing

  1836. from verse 6

  1837. down to the

  1838. end of the

  1839. psalm.

  1840. Amen.

  1841. Amen.

  1842. O who can

  1843. show us

  1844. any good,

  1845. I hear so

  1846. many say,

  1847. O Lord,

  1848. shine on us

  1849. with your

  1850. light, show

  1851. us your

  1852. face, I

  1853. pray.

  1854. You

  1855. filled my

  1856. heart with

  1857. greater joy

  1858. than others'

  1859. men have

  1860. heard, as

  1861. they

  1862. rejoice at

  1863. harvest time,

  1864. when pain

  1865. and wine

  1866. are

  1867. burned.

  1868. I will

  1869. lie down

  1870. and sleep

  1871. in peace,

  1872. my heart

  1873. will

  1874. rest

  1875. secure

  1876. for you

  1877. alone,

  1878. O

  1879. righteous

  1880. Lord,

  1881. will

  1882. keep

  1883. me

  1884. safe

  1885. and

  1886. sure.

  1887. After the

  1888. benediction, I'll

1889. go to the door to my

  1890. left.

  1891. Now may grace,

  1892. mercy, and peace

  1893. from God,

  1894. Father, Son, and

  1895. Holy Spirit, rest

  1896. upon and abide

  1897. with you all,

  1898. now and forever

  1899. more.

  1900. Amen.

  1901. Amen.

  1902. Amen.
