  1. We can turn back to our reading in Jeremiah chapter 31.

    Jeremiah 31 chapter mention

  2. Read the words at verse 34.

  3. And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, Know the Lord,

  4. ! For they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord.

  5. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin.

  6. No more.

  7. These words in verse 34 are in light of what comes before it.

  8. They are verse 31 down to that point where the Lord speaks there of days that are coming,

  9. and I will make a new covenant.

  10. God is going to make a new covenant with his people and part of this covenant where he speaks here

  11. is that their sins will be remembered no more.

  12. But how do we get to that point?

  13. How do we reach that point where God is saying these words, and how do they become meaningful for us today,

  14. and especially as we look ahead to preparing ourselves for Sunday for the Lord's table,

  15. as we will come to remember the Lord's death.

  16. On Sunday morning, we were looking at the beginning of this passage, the end of chapter 30 into chapter 31.

  17. And there we were seeing how God shows his grace to his people.

  18. We saw it in a number of different ways.

  19. We saw at the end of chapter 30 how God was speaking about a storm that was coming,

  20. and it was a gracious warning.

  21. A storm is coming, and they would be taken into the wilderness.

  22. But then we saw, as you go into chapter 31, how there is a renewal, a renewing that's going to come.

  23. But before that comes, he speaks to them about how he'll be with them in the wilderness.

  24. In verse 2 of chapter 31, he gave a gracious reminder to them of those who would seek him.

  25. Those who sought him would find grace in the wilderness.

  26. So that even as they were away from the Lord, that there was grace for them.

  27. And then as we went on from there, we saw how God reminds them of a gracious renewal,

  28. that he is going to take his people back, going to return them from exile.

  29. And part of it was that homes that they had lost would be rebuilt.

  30. Harvests that they had lost would come again.

  31. And the sorrow that they had would be turned into joy.

  32. All of these things were said once again.

  33. They were going to come again.

  34. But perhaps the greatest renewal would be the right worship of God,

  35. as we saw in verse 6 of chapter 31, where it says,

  36. For there shall be a day when watchmen will call in the hill country of Ephraim,

  37. Arise, and let us go to Zion, to the Lord our God.

  38. To the Lord our God.

  39. There is this relationship that is restored, and especially when it comes to worshipping God as he deserves.

  40. Tonight, I want to continue in this chapter.

  41. I want to continue looking at the words that we have before us and see how this renewal comes,

  42. and just what it means for the people, how they come to know it,

  43. and the blessings that it gives.

  44. God is speaking here through Jeremiah.

  45. Jeremiah.

  46. He's speaking through his prophet.

  47. And as we saw on Sunday, Jeremiah's ministry was a long ministry, 50 years,

  48. and yet no one was listening.

  49. No one was listening.

  50. They weren't listening.

  51. But a day would come when they would hear God speaking,

  52. when they would see their need of him.

  53. And when God speaks through his word, we know it today.

  54. He speaks to us through it.

  55. But we also know a day is coming when we will speak with God face to face.

  56. And God's word is preparing us for that.

  57. To ask us, are we ready to meet with the Lord?

  58. What if that was tonight?

  59. We're preparing ourselves for the Lord's day, for a communion weekend,

  60. but there's no certainty that the Lord would not come tonight.

  61. And what would you say?

  62. How would you justify yourself before God?

  63. Are you ready for it?

  64. Well, it's by looking at God's word that we see where our confidence can be.

  65. And it's not in ourselves.

  66. And I want us to look at four verses through this chapter this evening.

  67. We're going to come back to this chapter again another time.

  68. But this evening, I want us to look at four verses.

  69. And I want us to see there are questions in these verses.

  70. And there are questions there for ourselves to ask.

  71. And that perhaps we do ask, perhaps we are asking.

  72. Where can we truly find rest?

  73. We're going to look at verse 11 and ask the question, who can save us?

  74. We're going to look at verse 21 and ask, where can I go?

  75. We're going to look at verse 29 and ask, what can I say?

  76. And then we're going to look at verse 34 and ask, what will I know?

  77. So the first thing we're going to look at is verse 11 and ask that question, who can save us?

  78. Read these words again in verse 11.

  79. For the Lord has ransomed Jacob and has redeemed him from hands too strong for him.

  80. Jacob is not an individual here.

  81. It's a people.

  82. The people who God is taking captive.

  83. The people who have sinned against God.

  84. Who have turned away from God.

  85. Their sin is going to have consequences.

  86. Where they're going to be taken captive by a foreign nation.

  87. A powerful invading nation.

  88. And in their captivity, the big question would be, who can save us?

  89. Who can save us?

  90. Because as you go on in the Old Testament, as you see God bringing that judgment down upon them,

  91. taking them into captivity, you see just how powerful, how wicked these nations that took God's people captive were.

  92. They were a powerful nation, not just locally in a context, but far and wide.

  93. And so as God's people are taken captive, there would seem to be no way out for them.

  94. And so that question would often be on their lips.

  95. Who can save us?

  96. How are we going to escape?

  97. They would have despair.

  98. They would feel helpless.

  99. And it's that same age-old question that we see throughout Scripture and even to this very day.

  100. In different situations.

  101. Who can save us?

  102. In Psalm 4, we sung it on Sunday morning.

  103. There is a question there in verse 6.

  104. There are many who say, who will show us some good?

  105. Who will show us some good?

  106. And the psalmist goes on to say, lift up the light of your face upon us, O Lord.

  107. There's a question, but there's an answer in that psalm as well.

  108. As you go into the New Testament, you see the same question.

  109. Who can save us?

  110. This is asked on a number of different occasions.

  111. Two examples.

  112. The rich young ruler who came to Jesus in Mark 10, verse 17, and said,

    Mark 10:17

  113. Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?

  114. Who will save us?

  115. How can we be saved?

  116. The Philippian jailer in Acts 16, verse 30, he brought them out and said,

    Acts 16:30

  117. Sir, what must I do to be saved?

  118. It's a recurring question.

  119. It's a question in every generation.

  120. Has it been your question?

  121. Is it your question even tonight?

  122. Because it's a question I'm sure we've all had.

  123. And maybe we still have.

  124. Because as we read in these scriptures, those kinds of questions,

  125. the rich young ruler, the Philippian jailer,

  126. there's a sense of what can I do?

  127. And that's what have been the thoughts of the people here in Jeremiah's day as well.

  128. Taken captive, taken into captivity.

  129. What can we do?

  130. How can we be saved?

  131. And as we look here, we see that our attention is taken away from self and onto another.

  132. And that's often the case as well as you read through these scriptures.

  133. Psalm 4 has that answer,

  134. Lord, shine upon us with your light.

  135. The rich young ruler is told quite plainly by Jesus,

  136. go and sell all that you have and come and follow me.

  137. The Philippian jailer, believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.

  138. The attention is taken away from self onto the Lord.

  139. That's where verse 11 takes us here as well.

  140. For the Lord has ransomed Jacob and has redeemed him from hands too strong for him.

  141. Who can save us?

  142. Only the Lord.

  143. Their enemy was a nation.

  144. Who's your enemy and who's my enemy tonight?

  145. Because we have an enemy.

  146. The enemy is sin.

  147. And the enemy is the devil.

  148. And when we know the power of sin,

  149. when we know the temptation of the devil,

  150. we're so often left in that point where we ask,

  151. who can save us?

  152. Who can save us when sin leaves us in despair?

  153. Well, this question in verse 11,

  154. who can save us?

  155. The answer is there for us.

  156. Only the Lord.

  157. Only the Lord can save us from the hands that are too strong for us.

  158. The power of sin.

  159. And God is powerful.

  160. And what you see in these words in verse 11,

  161. there's two words there,

  162. ransomed and redeemed.

  163. They're important words for us.

  164. Who can save us?

  165. Who can save us?

  166. As we sung in Psalm 49,

  167. who can redeem a life?

  168. Who can pay that sufficient price?

  169. None of us.

  170. But God is here saying,

  171. the Lord has ransomed.

  172. The Lord has redeemed.

  173. The Lord has paid the price.

  174. That is what we come to remember this week.

  175. We cannot save ourselves.

  176. We are coming in dependence upon the only one

  177. who can save us.

  178. As a shorter catechson puts it,

  179. who is the redeemer of God's elect?

  180. The only redeemer of God's elect

  181. is the Lord Jesus Christ.

  182. Because there is no other.

  183. Who can save us?

  184. Who can save you?

  185. The Lord Jesus Christ.

  186. We cannot pay a price.

  187. We cannot do anything from ourselves.

  188. Release from captivity.

  189. For these people then was dependent on the Lord.

  190. Release from our captivity and sin

  191. is dependent on the Lord's intervention too.

  192. He is the one who intervenes.

  193. He is the one who pays the price.

  194. That is who we come to remember.

  195. Secondly then we see in verse 21,

  196. we ask the question,

  197. where can I go?

  198. Verse 21 says,

  199. set up road markers for yourself.

  200. Make yourself guideposts.

  201. Consider well the highway,

  202. the road by which you went.

  203. Return, O virginus,

  204. return to these your cities.

  205. Where can I go?

  206. Life is full of choices.

  207. And one of the main choices

  208. you see as you read through Jeremiah

  209. that's often put to the people,

  210. the main choice you see is

  211. which way are you going to go?

  212. Are you going to go your own way?

  213. Or are you going to go the Lord's way?

  214. When you go back to the early chapters

  215. into chapter 6 of Jeremiah

  216. and verse 16,

  217. there you see a decision made by the people.

  218. The Lord speaks in verse 16 of chapter 6

  219. and he says,

  220. stand by the roads

  221. and look

  222. and ask for the ancient paths

  223. where the good way is

  224. and walk in it

  225. and find rest for your souls.

  226. But then you have the response of the people.

  227. But they said,

  228. we will not walk in it.

  229. The choice was put before them there.

  230. Stand and look and ask,

  231. which way are you going?

  232. Where are you going?

  233. And God shows them,

  234. this is the way that you should go.

  235. And there you will find rest for your souls.

  236. And they say,

  237. no,

  238. we will not walk in it.

  239. But where does that lead them?

  240. Where does it take them?

  241. To the very situation we're seeing

  242. as you go through Jeremiah,

  243. it's this idea

  244. where God is going to intervene

  245. and take them into captivity.

  246. He is going to take them into the wilderness,

  247. into a far off foreign land.

  248. Choices have consequences.

  249. And that's made very clear for us

  250. throughout Jeremiah,

  251. throughout the word of God.

  252. Where does sin lead us?

  253. As we saw earlier on Sunday morning,

  254. as we're looking at the early part,

  255. it leads us into the wilderness

  256. at arm's length from God.

  257. It leaves us lost,

  258. not knowing where to turn.

  259. So where can we go?

  260. Here is a people who are lost.

  261. And when we are in sin in the wilderness,

  262. we too are lost.

  263. And we can ask,

  264. where can I go?

  265. Well,

  266. verse 21 reminds us where we can go.

  267. It says,

  268. set up road markers for yourself.

  269. Make yourself guideposts.

  270. What is he saying here?

  271. Guideposts,

  272. markers,

  273. would have been

  274. probably stone cairns

  275. that people would have set up

  276. as they were journeying around.

  277. So if they were going far

  278. from one city maybe to another,

  279. or going out into the wilderness

  280. to find their way back,

  281. they would set up

  282. these stone cairns

  283. so that they would know

  284. what direction to go in.

  285. And that's what God

  286. is reminding them here.

  287. He is reminding them that

  288. as they are taken into captivity,

  289. to remember

  290. where they have come from.

  291. Make for yourselves,

  292. guideposts,

  293. consider well the highway,

  294. the road by which you went.

  295. And then it says,

  296. return,

  297. O virgin Israel,

  298. return to these,

  299. your city.

  300. So there's a going out

  301. and there's a coming back.

  302. And that's

  303. our situation too.

  304. When sin

  305. takes us

  306. into the wilderness,

  307. where can we go?

  308. We can return

  309. to God.

  310. Throughout this chapter

  311. there's so much imagery

  312. you would just associate

  313. with the prodigal son.

  314. He went into

  315. a far off land,

  316. he went into the wilderness,

  317. he squandered

  318. his wealth.

  319. But what happens

  320. when it says

  321. he came to his senses?

  322. He remembered

  323. his father's house.

  324. He remembered

  325. where he had come from.

  326. And he started

  327. that journey

  328. back.

  329. And that is

  330. the situation

  331. for every sinner.

  332. that as we go

  333. away from God

  334. into the wilderness

  335. to find our way

  336. back,

  337. we look for the signposts,

  338. the markers,

  339. the things that are

  340. put before us

  341. to remember

  342. where we have

  343. come from

  344. and to return

  345. to God.

  346. It's a bit like

  347. if you go on a

  348. coastal walk now

  349. or if you go

  350. the West Highland Way.

  351. As you're walking

  352. along,

  353. you'll find

  354. posts or cairns

  355. or things,

  356. markers put there

  357. to show you

  358. that you're on

  359. the right track,

  360. that you're going

  361. the right way.

  362. It might even

  363. give you an indication

  364. of how far

  365. to the next one

  366. and point you

  367. in the right direction.

  368. People have gone

  369. that way before.

  370. And as you look

  371. at this chapter,

  372. as you look at

  373. verse 21,

  374. there's certainly

  375. a reminder there

  376. for us that the people

  377. were going to go

  378. on a journey.

  379. They were not going

  380. to be alone

  381. and that they

  382. would return.

  383. But that's the story

  384. of salvation.

  385. A people who drift

  386. away from God

  387. but who can find

  388. a way back.

  389. Through God's

  390. ministering His Word,

  391. through God's grace,

  392. by His Spirit,

  393. He works.

  394. The prodigal son

  395. reminds us of that.

  396. There is a father

  397. who longs

  398. for us to return.

  399. Where can we go?

  400. We can go

  401. to the only one

  402. who gives that welcome,

  403. who gives that warmth

  404. of us coming back.

  405. How often does sin

  406. leave you asking,

  407. where can I go?

  408. Where can I go

  409. with this?

  410. How can I find help?

  411. Come,

  412. the Word of God says.

  413. Return.

  414. Return, O virginus.

  415. Return to these,

  416. your cities.

  417. The prodigal son

  418. is returned

  419. to my father's house.

  420. To us,

  421. it is to return

  422. to God.

  423. There is

  424. a way.

  425. There is

  426. a place

  427. to go.

  428. To go

  429. to the Father.

  430. Third thing

  431. we see here

  432. is verse

  433. 29.

  434. What can I say?

  435. Verse 29,

  436. In those days

  437. they shall no longer

  438. say,

  439. the fathers

  440. have eaten

  441. sour grapes

  442. and the children's

  443. teeth

  444. are set

  445. on edge.

  446. It's one of these

  447. sayings that you find

  448. in Ezekiel.

  449. Ezekiel speaks

  450. a bit more

  451. about this

  452. in chapter 18.

  453. The fathers

  454. have eaten

  455. sour grapes

  456. and the children's

  457. teeth

  458. are set

  459. on edge.

  460. You can read

  461. that later

  462. for yourselves.

  463. But behind it

  464. all is a sense

  465. of blame.

  466. Sense

  467. of blame.

  468. Because when you

  469. read it in

  470. Ezekiel,

  471. you see that

  472. they are passing

  473. the buck.

  474. They are saying

  475. it's not us

  476. who sinned.

  477. It's our fathers.

  478. It's our forefathers.

  479. It's their fault.

  480. They are looking

  481. for someone

  482. to blame.

  483. And that is

  484. something that is

  485. in our nature

  486. because of sin.

  487. We are looking

  488. to pass the buck.

  489. It goes right

  490. back to Genesis

    Genesis 3:12

  491. chapter 3

  492. verse 12

  493. where the man

  494. said,

  495. the woman

  496. whom you gave

  497. to be with me

  498. she gave me

  499. fruit of the three

  500. and I ate.

  501. Whose fault?

  502. It's somebody

  503. else's.

  504. It's the woman

  505. you gave me.

  506. It's almost like

  507. blaming God

  508. there as well.

  509. So there's a sense

  510. of who can we

  511. blame?

  512. Are you like that

  513. when it comes

  514. to sin?

  515. It's somebody

  516. else's fault.

  517. They made me

  518. angry.

  519. They made me

  520. do it.

  521. They made me

  522. sin.

  523. It's always

  524. someone else's

  525. fault.

  526. Last Saturday

  527. down near

  528. Middlesbrough

  529. there was a

  530. tragic incident.

  531. A tragic

  532. loss of life

  533. where seven

  534. people died

  535. in a car

  536. crash.

  537. Because one

  538. car was being

  539. driven the

  540. wrong way up

  541. a lane in

  542. the motorway.

  543. Five were

  544. killed in one

  545. car and two

  546. policemen in

  547. another.

  548. Since the

  549. crash it's

  550. been in the

  551. news that

  552. one of the

  553. family,

  554. they were

  555. blaming the

  556. police for

  557. it.

  558. It's their

  559. fault.

  560. Trying to

  561. pass the

  562. blame.

  563. Taking no

  564. responsibility

  565. that their

  566. son or

  567. family member

  568. was driving

  569. the wrong

  570. way up a

  571. dual carriageway.

  572. it's just

  573. inner nature.

  574. Even when we

  575. are doing

  576. wrong and

  577. we know it,

  578. it's somebody

  579. else's fault.

  580. That's the

  581. kind of world

  582. in which we

  583. live in.

  584. That's the

  585. kind of nature

  586. that we

  587. have.

  588. But when you

  589. look at this

  590. verse,

  591. verse 29,

  592. you see how

  593. it quotes

  594. those words,

  595. the fathers

  596. have eaten

  597. sour grapes

  598. and the

  599. children's

  600. teeth are

  601. set on

  602. edge.

  603. But what

  604. it says at

  605. the beginning

  606. is key.

  607. In those

  608. days they

  609. shall no

  610. longer say.

  611. They shall

  612. no longer

  613. say.

  614. They are

  615. accepting

  616. responsibility.

  617. Instead,

  618. it says in

  619. verse 30,

  620. but everyone

  621. shall die

  622. for his

  623. own sin.

  624. Each man

  625. who eats

  626. sour grapes,

  627. his teeth

  628. shall be

  629. set on

  630. edge.

  631. It's no

  632. longer

  633. passing

  634. the back.

  635. It's no

  636. longer saying

  637. it's my

  638. father's

  639. fault or

  640. my

  641. forefather's

  642. fault.

  643. It's no

  644. longer

  645. society's

  646. fault or

  647. my

  648. upbringing's

  649. fault.

  650. I am

  651. taking

  652. responsibility.

  653. What

  654. shall we

  655. say?

  656. Well,

  657. we have

  658. to come

  659. before

  660. God.

  661. Because

  662. when we

  663. see God

  664. and when

  665. we look

  666. to God

  667. and we

  668. see our

  669. sin,

  670. it gives

  671. us a

  672. new

  673. outlook.

  674. And that's

  675. what we

  676. see the

  677. change

  678. that is

  679. going to

  680. come with

  681. the people

  682. here.

  683. They

  684. shall no

  685. longer

  686. say.

  687. They

  688. shall no

  689. longer

  690. blame.

  691. Instead,

  692. there's a

  693. sense of

  694. individual

  695. accountability

  696. and also

  697. corporate

  698. accountability

  699. here.

  700. Where

  701. individuals

  702. will confess

  703. their sins.

  704. Where the

  705. community,

  706. the corporate

  707. nature of it,

  708. they will

  709. confess their

  710. sins together.

  711. You think

  712. of the

  713. words of

  714. Psalm 51

  715. which we

  716. sung.

  717. against

  718. thee,

  719. thee

  720. only

  721. have I

  722. sinned.

  723. In

  724. thy

  725. sight

  726. done

  727. this

  728. ill.

  729. There's

  730. an

  731. acknowledgement

  732. I'm

  733. not going

  734. to blame

  735. anybody

  736. anymore.

  737. It is

  738. me.

  739. Against

  740. thee,

  741. thee

  742. only

  743. have I

  744. sinned.

  745. The

  746. same

  747. in the

  748. Gospels

  749. as you

  750. look through

  751. them.

  752. In

  753. Luke

    Luke 18:13

  754. 18

  755. verse

  756. 13

  757. those

  758. tax

  759. collectors

  760. standing

  761. afar

  762. off

  763. praying.

  764. And

  765. what's

  766. he saying?

  767. He's

  768. saying,

  769. God

  770. be

  771. merciful

  772. to

  773. me,

  774. a

  775. sinner.

  776. Whereas

  777. the

  778. other

  779. one

  780. who's

  781. standing

  782. beside

  783. him

  784. and

  785. saying,

  786. I

  787. am

  788. glad

  789. I

  790. am

  791. not

  792. like

  793. that

  794. man.

  795. I

  796. tithe,

  797. I

  798. do

  799. this,

  800. I

  801. do

  802. that.

  803. But

  804. no,

  805. the

  806. tax

  807. collector

  808. has

  809. the

  810. right

  811. attitude.

  812. God

  813. be

  814. merciful

  815. to

  816. me,

  817. a

  818. sinner.

  819. What

  820. can

  821. we

  822. say?

  823. What

  824. can

  825. you

  826. say?

  827. God

  828. be

  829. merciful

  830. to

  831. me,

  832. a

  833. sinner.

  834. again,

  835. the

  836. prodigal

  837. son.

  838. As

  839. the son

  840. comes to

  841. the father

  842. in verse

  843. 21,

  844. Father,

  845. I have

  846. sinned

  847. against

  848. heaven

  849. and

  850. before

  851. you.

  852. What

  853. can

  854. we

  855. say?

  856. We

  857. have

  858. sinned

  859. against

  860. you.

  861. What

  862. can

  863. we

  864. say

  865. as

  866. we

  867. come

  868. to

  869. a

  870. communion?

  871. I

  872. have

  873. sinned

  874. against

  875. you.

  876. We

  877. have

  878. sinned

  879. against

  880. you.

  881. We

  882. are

  883. not

  884. worthy

  885. to

  886. be

  887. called

  888. your

  889. son.

  890. We

  891. are

  892. not

  893. worthy

  894. to

  895. be

  896. called

  897. your

  898. daughter.

  899. What

  900. can

  901. we

  902. say?

  903. We

  904. can

  905. confess

  906. our

  907. sin.

  908. We

  909. can

  910. acknowledge

  911. our

  912. sin

  913. before

  914. God.

  915. If

  916. you

  917. were

  918. at

  919. the

  920. induction

  921. in

  922. Graver

  923. last

  924. evening,

  925. and I

  926. know

  927. many

  928. of

  929. you

  930. were,

  931. one

  932. of

  933. the

  934. main

  935. comments,

  936. and I

  937. spoken

  938. to a

  939. few

  940. last

  941. night

  942. and

  943. today,

  944. was

  945. how

  946. powerful

  947. the

  948. singing

  949. was.

  950. There

  951. was

  952. just a

  953. sense

  954. of,

  955. how do

  956. you

  957. describe it?

  958. A sense

  959. of awe

  960. in that

  961. worship.

  962. A

  963. corporate

  964. worship

  965. where the

  966. power of

  967. God's

  968. presence and

  969. the praising

  970. of his

  971. name was

  972. powerful.

  973. God's

  974. And

  975. there

  976. is

  977. blessing.

  978. And

  979. at the

  980. reception

  981. last

  982. night,

  983. at the

  984. end,

  985. we

  986. sang

  987. Psalm

  988. 133.

  989. And

  990. again,

  991. it

  992. asks that

  993. question,

  994. where

  995. is

  996. blessing

  997. found?

  998. It's

  999. together

  1000. such as

  1001. brethren

  1002. are in

  1003. unity

  1004. to

  1005. dwell.

  1006. And

  1007. there

  1008. is that

  1009. question

  1010. then,

  1011. what

  1012. can

  1013. we

  1014. say?

  1015. We

  1016. acknowledge

  1017. our

  1018. sins

  1019. individually.

  1020. We

  1021. acknowledge

  1022. our

  1023. corporate

  1024. sins.

  1025. And

  1026. we

  1027. seek

  1028. that

  1029. blessing

  1030. as we

  1031. confess

  1032. our

  1033. sin,

  1034. to seek

  1035. that

  1036. unity

  1037. and

  1038. that

  1039. blessing

  1040. from

  1041. God.

  1042. We

  1043. confess.

  1044. We

  1045. repent.

  1046. That

  1047. is what

  1048. the people

  1049. are looking

  1050. for here.

  1051. That's

  1052. what God

  1053. is looking

  1054. for from

  1055. the people

  1056. here,

  1057. that they

  1058. would

  1059. return

  1060. to

  1061. him.

  1062. That

  1063. they

  1064. would

  1065. confess

  1066. their

  1067. sins.

  1068. The

  1069. shorter

  1070. catechism

  1071. again

  1072. says about

  1073. repentance

  1074. unto

  1075. life.

  1076. It

  1077. is a

  1078. saving

  1079. grace

  1080. whereby

  1081. a sinner

  1082. out of

  1083. a true

  1084. sense

  1085. of

  1086. his

  1087. sin

  1088. and

  1089. apprehension

  1090. of the

  1091. mercy

  1092. of

  1093. God

  1094. in

  1095. Christ

  1096. doth

  1097. with

  1098. grief

  1099. and

  1100. hatred

  1101. of

  1102. his

  1103. sin

  1104. turn

  1105. from

  1106. it

  1107. unto

  1108. God

  1109. with

  1110. full

  1111. purpose

  1112. of

  1113. an

  1114. endeavour

  1115. after

  1116. new

  1117. obedience.

  1118. The

  1119. very

  1120. thing

  1121. that

  1122. we

  1123. are

  1124. seeing

  1125. in

  1126. these

  1127. words.

  1128. No

  1129. longer

  1130. will

  1131. we

  1132. say

  1133. it's

  1134. somebody

  1135. else's

  1136. fault

  1137. but we

  1138. will

  1139. repent.

  1140. We

  1141. will

  1142. turn

  1143. from

  1144. our

  1145. sin.

  1146. We

  1147. will

  1148. turn

  1149. to

  1150. God

  1151. and

  1152. endeavour

  1153. after

  1154. new

  1155. obedience.

  1156. confess

  1157. we

  1158. confess

  1159. our

  1160. sins.

  1161. What

  1162. shall

  1163. we

  1164. say?

  1165. Father

  1166. I

  1167. have

  1168. sinned

  1169. against

  1170. you.

  1171. Confess

  1172. our

  1173. sin.

  1174. The

  1175. fourth

  1176. thing

  1177. and

  1178. final

  1179. thing

  1180. we

  1181. see

  1182. here

  1183. is

  1184. what

  1185. will

  1186. I

  1187. know?

  1188. Who

  1189. can

  1190. save

  1191. we've

  1192. asked

  1193. the

  1194. Lord?

  1195. Where

  1196. can we

  1197. go

  1198. to the

  1199. Father?

  1200. What

  1201. can we

  1202. say?

  1203. I

  1204. have

  1205. sinned

  1206. against

  1207. you.

  1208. Well

  1209. where

  1210. does

  1211. that

  1212. take

  1213. us?

  1214. Into

  1215. verse

  1216. 31

  1217. to

  1218. 34.

  1219. Again

  1220. we're

  1221. just

  1222. going to

  1223. look at

  1224. it very

  1225. briefly

  1226. this

  1227. evening

  1228. but

  1229. we'll

  1230. come

  1231. back

  1232. to

  1233. it

  1234. again.

  1235. Verse

  1236. 31

  1237. says

  1238. Behold

  1239. the

  1240. days

  1241. are

  1242. coming

  1243. declares

  1244. the

  1245. Lord

  1246. when

  1247. I

  1248. will

  1249. make

  1250. a

  1251. new

  1252. covenant

  1253. with

  1254. the

  1255. house

  1256. of

  1257. Israel

  1258. and

  1259. with

  1260. the

  1261. house

  1262. of

  1263. Judah.

  1264. And

  1265. he

  1266. speaks

  1267. !

  1268. then

  1269. into

  1270. their

  1271. heart.

  1272. Where

  1273. he

  1274. will

  1275. put

  1276. the

  1277. law

  1278. into

  1279. their

  1280. heart.

  1281. He

  1282. will

  1283. write

  1284. it

  1285. on

  1286. their

  1287. hearts

  1288. it

  1289. says

  1290. at

  1291. the

  1292. end

  1293. of

  1294. verse

  1295. 33.

  1296. And

  1297. then

  1298. in

  1299. verse

  1300. 34

  1301. No

  1302. longer

  1303. shall

  1304. each

  1305. one

  1306. teach

  1307. his

  1308. neighbor

  1309. and

  1310. each

  1311. his

  1312. brother

  1313. saying

  1314. know

  1315. the

  1316. Lord

  1317. for

  1318. they

  1319. shall

  1320. all

  1321. know

  1322. me

  1323. from

  1324. the

  1325. least

  1326. of

  1327. them

  1328. to

  1329. the

  1330. greatest

  1331. declares

  1332. the

  1333. Lord

  1334. for

  1335. I

  1336. will

  1337. forgive

  1338. !

  1339. where

  1340. does

  1341. this

  1342. take

  1343. us?

  1344. It

  1345. takes

  1346. us

  1347. to

  1348. the

  1349. place

  1350. we

  1351. will

  1352. remember

  1353. this

  1354. Sunday

  1355. to

  1356. Calvary

  1357. to

  1358. the

  1359. place

  1360. of

  1361. the

  1362. cross.

  1363. The

  1364. people

  1365. here

  1366. were

  1367. struggling

  1368. to

  1369. find

  1370. a

  1371. way

  1372. to

  1373. forgiveness.

  1374. And

  1375. for

  1376. many

  1377. it

  1378. would

  1379. have

  1380. been

  1381. a

  1382. sense

  1383. of

  1384. the

  1385. law

  1386. trying

  1387. to

  1388. keep

  1389. the

  1390. law

  1391. perfectly.

  1392. But

  1393. this

  1394. new

  1395. covenant

  1396. that

  1397. he's

  1398. given

  1399. to

  1400. them

  1401. is

  1402. going

  1403. to

  1404. be

  1405. written

  1406. in

  1407. their

  1408. hearts

  1409. where

  1410. there

  1411. will

  1412. be

  1413. a

  1414. new

  1415. sense

  1416. of

  1417. obedience.

  1418. Not

  1419. able

  1420. to

  1421. keep

  1422. the

  1423. law

  1424. perfectly

  1425. because

  1426. none

  1427. are.

  1428. And

  1429. in

  1430. order

  1431. to

  1432. forgive

  1433. their

  1434. sins

  1435. as you

  1436. go

  1437. through

  1438. the

  1439. Old

  1440. Testament

  1441. they

  1442. were

  1443. having

  1444. to

  1445. offer

  1446. their

  1447. sacrifices

  1448. daily

  1449. weekly

  1450. and

  1451. then

  1452. annually

  1453. where

  1454. they

  1455. had

  1456. the

  1457. Passover

  1458. meal

  1459. offering

  1460. up

  1461. that

  1462. scapegoat

  1463. it

  1464. was a

  1465. continual

  1466. way

  1467. of

  1468. sacrifice

  1469. in

  1470. order

  1471. for

  1472. their

  1473. sins

  1474. to

  1475. be

  1476. forgiven

  1477. this

  1478. was

  1479. ongoing

  1480. but

  1481. where

  1482. is it

  1483. taking

  1484. us

  1485. it

  1486. is

  1487. taking

  1488. us

  1489. to

  1490. the

  1491. cross

  1492. and

  1493. where

  1494. it

  1495. declares

  1496. I

  1497. will

  1498. forgive

  1499. their

  1500. iniquity

  1501. and

  1502. I

  1503. will

  1504. remember

  1505. their

  1506. sin

  1507. no

  1508. more

  1509. it

  1510. is

  1511. dealt

  1512. with

  1513. so

  1514. they

  1515. were

  1516. struggling

  1517. to

  1518. find

  1519. a

  1520. way

  1521. and

  1522. so

  1523. do

  1524. we

  1525. perhaps

  1526. you

  1527. are

  1528. struggling

  1529. with

  1530. your

  1531. sin

  1532. tonight

  1533. can

  1534. he

  1535. really

  1536. forgive

  1537. my

  1538. sin

  1539. well

  1540. here

  1541. we are

  1542. reminded

  1543. that

  1544. he

  1545. can

  1546. when

  1547. he

  1548. writes

  1549. his

  1550. law

  1551. on

  1552. our

  1553. heart

  1554. he

  1555. says

  1556. I

  1557. will

  1558. remember

  1559. your

  1560. sin

  1561. no

  1562. more

  1563. you

  1564. are

  1565. forgiven

  1566. your

  1567. debt

  1568. is

  1569. paid

  1570. the

  1571. lord

  1572. has

  1573. saved

  1574. you

  1575. in

  1576. verse

  1577. 31

  1578. it

  1579. speaks

  1580. of

  1581. a

  1582. new

  1583. covenant

  1584. and

  1585. it

  1586. links

  1587. us

  1588. into

  1589. the

  1590. new

  1591. testament

  1592. to

  1593. what

  1594. Jesus

  1595. has

  1596. done

  1597. for us

  1598. when you

  1599. look at

  1600. Luke

    Luke 22:20

  1601. 22

  1602. verse

  1603. 20

  1604. and

  1605. likewise

  1606. the cup

  1607. after they

  1608. had eaten

  1609. saying

  1610. this cup

  1611. that is

  1612. poured

  1613. out

  1614. for you

  1615. is a

  1616. new

  1617. covenant

  1618. in

  1619. my

  1620. blood

  1621. there is

  1622. where we

  1623. find

  1624. forgiveness

  1625. through

  1626. faith

  1627. in

  1628. the

  1629. lord

  1630. jesus

  1631. christ

  1632. then

  1633. you

  1634. have

  1635. hebrews

  1636. 8

  1637. where

  1638. it

  1639. speaks

  1640. of

  1641. jesus

  1642. as

  1643. our

  1644. great

  1645. high

  1646. priest

  1647. bearing

  1648. our

  1649. sin

  1650. quoting

  1651. these

  1652. very

  1653. words

  1654. from

  1655. jeremiah

  1656. 31

  1657. again

  1658. we'll

  1659. come

  1660. back

  1661. to

  1662. look

  1663. at

  1664. it

  1665. in

  1666. more

  1667. detail

  1668. but

  1669. they

  1670. are

  1671. wonderful

  1672. words

  1673. what

  1674. will

  1675. you

  1676. know

  1677. as

  1678. you

  1679. come

  1680. to

  1681. him

  1682. I

  1683. will

  1684. remember

  1685. your

  1686. sins

  1687. no

  1688. more

  1689. in

  1690. john

  1691. bunyan's

  1692. pilgrim

  1693. pilgrim's

  1694. progress

  1695. there we

  1696. meet the

  1697. man called

  1698. christian

  1699. man who's

  1700. carrying a

  1701. heavy burden

  1702. !

  1703. on his

  1704. back

  1705. he doesn't

  1706. understand

  1707. what it

  1708. is at

  1709. first but

  1710. he knows

  1711. it's weighing

  1712. him down

  1713. and no

  1714. matter what

  1715. he does

  1716. where he

  1717. goes

  1718. this

  1719. burden

  1720. follows

  1721. him

  1722. it is

  1723. the weight

  1724. of sin

  1725. his guilt

  1726. his past

  1727. his shame

  1728. all of

  1729. these

  1730. things

  1731. but

  1732. christian

  1733. begins

  1734. this

  1735. journey

  1736. he

  1737. climbs

  1738. hills

  1739. he faces

  1740. enemies

  1741. comes

  1742. against

  1743. temptation

  1744. all of

  1745. these

  1746. things

  1747. and the

  1748. burden

  1749. remains

  1750. until

  1751. he reaches

  1752. a hill

  1753. with a

  1754. cross

  1755. at the

  1756. top

  1757. and

  1758. that's

  1759. when

  1760. everything

  1761. changes

  1762. because

  1763. there as

  1764. he approaches

  1765. the cross

  1766. the straps

  1767. break

  1768. the burden

  1769. falls

  1770. off

  1771. rolls

  1772. down

  1773. the hill

  1774. into

  1775. an

  1776. empty

  1777. tomb

  1778. and

  1779. there

  1780. he

  1781. knows

  1782. that

  1783. he

  1784. is

  1785. free

  1786. he

  1787. is

  1788. forgiven

  1789. his

  1790. sin

  1791. has

  1792. been

  1793. taken

  1794. from

  1795. him

  1796. and

  1797. that

  1798. is

  1799. the

  1800. joy

  1801. of

  1802. the

  1803. christian

  1804. that

  1805. is

  1806. the

  1807. joy

  1808. that

  1809. we

  1810. see

  1811. as

  1812. we

  1813. look

  1814. to

  1815. the

  1816. lord

  1817. jesus

  1818. christ

  1819. as

  1820. we

  1821. think

  1822. of

  1823. all

  1824. of

  1825. these

  1826. questions

  1827. that

  1828. we

  1829. have

  1830. where

  1831. can

  1832. we

  1833. go

  1834. what

  1835. can

  1836. we

  1837. say

  1838. what

  1839. can

  1840. i

  1841. do

  1842. we

  1843. have

  1844. so

  1845. many

  1846. questions

  1847. but

  1848. when

  1849. we

  1850. see

  1851. the

  1852. answer

  1853. is

  1854. in

  1855. christ

  1856. it

  1857. leads

  1858. us

  1859. to

  1860. this

  1861. point

  1862. where

  1863. we

  1864. see

  1865. i

  1866. will

  1867. remember

  1868. your

  1869. sins

  1870. no

  1871. more

  1872. what

  1873. would

  1874. you

  1875. say

  1876. if

  1877. the

  1878. lord

  1879. returns

  1880. tonight

  1881. and

  1882. you

  1883. have

  1884. to

  1885. stand

  1886. before

  1887. how

  1888. do

  1889. you

  1890. justify

  1891. yourself

  1892. is

  1893. it

  1894. what

  1895. you

  1896. have

  1897. done

  1898. is

  1899. it

  1900. the

  1901. good

  1902. things

  1903. or

  1904. is

  1905. it

  1906. by

  1907. faith

  1908. by

  1909. believing

  1910. by

  1911. repenting

  1912. by

  1913. trusting

  1914. and

  1915. saying

  1916. i

  1917. have

  1918. sinned

  1919. against

  1920. you

  1921. but

  1922. i

  1923. have

  1924. believed

  1925. i

  1926. have

  1927. trusted

  1928. that

  1929. you

  1930. are

  1931. able

  1932. to

  1933. forgive

  1934. my

  1935. sins

  1936. well

  1937. don't

  1938. just

  1939. think

  1940. about

  1941. it

  1942. in

  1943. light

  1944. of

  1945. what

  1946. the

  1947. lord

  1948. returns

  1949. but

  1950. think

  1951. about

  1952. it

  1953. in

  1954. light

  1955. of

  1956. even

  1957. coming

  1958. to

  1959. the

  1960. lord's

  1961. table

  1962. how

  1963. are

  1964. you

  1965. coming

  1966. in

  1967. your

  1968. strength

  1969. in

  1970. what

  1971. you

  1972. have

  1973. done

  1974. or

  1975. remembering

  1976. that

  1977. it

  1978. is

  1979. through

  1980. him

  1981. sin

  1982. is

  1983. too

  1984. strong

  1985. for

  1986. us

  1987. to

  1988. conquer

  1989. but

  1990. we

  1991. have

  1992. been

  1993. ransomed

  1994. we

  1995. have

  1996. been

  1997. redeemed

  1998. by

  1999. the

  2000. saviour

  2001. who

  2002. is

  2003. jesus

  2004. christ

  2005. and

  2006. as

  2007. we

  2008. look

  2009. to

  2010. him

  2011. and

  2012. as

  2013. we

  2014. trust

  2015. in

  2016. him

  2017. he

  2018. says

  2019. i

  2020. will

  2021. remember

  2022. your

  2023. sin

  2024. no

  2025. more

  2026. and

  2027. if

  2028. you

  2029. are

  2030. trusting

  2031. you

  2032. are

  2033. to

  2034. come

  2035. can

  2036. you

  2037. say

  2038. he

  2039. is

  2040. my

  2041. saviour

  2042. and

  2043. my

  2044. lord

  2045. if

  2046. you

  2047. can

  2048. you

  2049. confess

  2050. your

  2051. sin

  2052. and

  2053. he

  2054. is

  2055. faithful

  2056. he

  2057. is

  2058. just

  2059. to

  2060. forgive

  2061. and

  2062. remember

  2063. them

  2064. no

  2065. more

  2066. and

  2067. we

  2068. can

  2069. come

  2070. and

  2071. remember

  2072. it

  2073. is

  2074. through

  2075. him

  2076. who

  2077. gave

  2078. his

  2079. life

  2080. as

  2081. a

  2082. ransom

  2083. for

  2084. many

  2085. let

  2086. us

  2087. pray

  2088. lord

  2089. our

  2090. gracious

  2091. god

  2092. we

  2093. we

  2094. thank

  2095. you

  2096. that

  2097. your

  2098. word

  2099. guides

  2100. us

  2101. so

  2102. often

  2103. as

  2104. we

  2105. see

  2106. in

  2107. jeremiah

  2108. it

  2109. gives

  2110. us

  2111. choices

  2112. and

  2113. we

  2114. acknowledge

  2115. so

  2116. often

  2117. we

  2118. have

  2119. made

  2120. the

  2121. wrong

  2122. choice

  2123. you

  2124. have

  2125. shown

  2126. us

  2127. the

  2128. paths

  2129. of

  2130. life

  2131. you

  2132. have

  2133. shown

  2134. us

  2135. a

  2136. way

  2137. to

  2138. rest

  2139. and

  2140. yet

  2141. we

  2142. have

  2143. gone

  2144. our

  2145. own

  2146. ways

  2147. we

  2148. have

  2149. gone

  2150. into

  2151. the

  2152. far

  2153. off

  2154. land

  2155. into

  2156. the

  2157. wilderness

  2158. but

  2159. we

  2160. thank

  2161. you

  2162. lord

  2163. that

  2164. you

  2165. remember

  2166. us

  2167. that

  2168. you

  2169. gave

  2170. grace

  2171. even

  2172. in

  2173. the

  2174. wilderness

  2175. and

  2176. as

  2177. you

  2178. have

  2179. brought

  2180. us

  2181. back

  2182. as

  2183. you

  2184. have

  2185. helped

  2186. us
