  1. I'd like us to turn back together to John chapter 5.

    John 5 chapter mention

  2. And we're going to look at the passage that we read.

  3. ! We can read again at verse 18.

  4. The start of chapter 5 is an interesting mini turning point in the Gospel of John.

  5. Because in many ways, the opening four chapters of John are just stunning.

  6. Maybe you could say that it's a bit like walking in the Hebrides on a beautiful summer's day.

  7. You go into chapter 1 and you have this stunning introduction as to who Jesus is.

  8. John takes us, he echoes the language of Genesis chapter 1, takes us right back into eternity

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  9. and shows us that our view of Jesus has to be at the highest level.

  10. You've got this incredible opening section in the Gospel.

  11. You then have the interaction with John the Baptist where Jesus is identified as the Lamb of God

  12. who takes away the sins of the world.

  13. We then see the recognition that Jesus is the one who the Jews have been waiting for and longing for for so long.

  14. And the joy of the messianic age has finally arrived.

  15. And that's seen so clearly in chapter 2 in the wedding in Cana where in that moment, that day of great joy,

  16. Jesus begins to reveal who he is.

  17. And he does it through turning water into wine, the finest of wine, the drink of joy and celebration.

  18. At this beautiful wedding, of course, pointing to the fact that he, Jesus, is the true bridegroom.

  19. He has come for his bride.

  20. And John starts to reveal to us that all the old requirements of the old covenant era are slipping away.

  21. Those restrictions are being lifted.

  22. And the Messiah has come with a beautifully simple message of salvation.

  23. And that's what Nicodemus discovers in chapter 3.

  24. That God has so loved the world that whosoever, that he gave his son,

  25. that whosoever believes in him will not perish but have everlasting life.

  26. And then you go into chapter 4.

  27. You have this amazing interaction with the woman at the well.

  28. And it's teaching us that Jesus is the one who has come to quench our thirst,

  29. to meet our deepest needs, to give us satisfaction that nothing else can compare with.

  30. And so John 1 to 4 is like walking on Luskintyre Beach on a stunning day.

  31. It's beautiful.

  32. And everything you see is breathtaking.

  33. But as you come into chapter 5, there's just maybe a slight change in the tone of the narrative.

  34. Not because it's less stunning.

  35. And in fact, the teaching in these chapters is some of the most,

  36. some of the richest and most theologically profound that we have in the whole Bible.

  37. But what we see coming into chapter 5 and what builds going through the rest of the gospel

  38. is that the clouds of opposition are gathering against Jesus.

  39. And he's being noticed.

  40. He is being questioned.

  41. He's being judged.

  42. And the criticism, the opposition, and the tension is all starting to increase.

  43. And in many ways, those two things that we've just described there,

  44. the kind of beautiful summer's day, stunning walk through John chapter 4,

    John 4 chapter mention

  45. that's part of what a communion weekend is like.

  46. There's something beautiful and refreshing and enriching.

  47. But at the same time, a communion weekend,

  48. a time like this in the life of a congregation and the life of an individual believer,

  49. it's also the time where we are just conscious of our struggles,

  50. of the opposition that we face, of our battle with sin.

  51. And often that for us feels like a battle that we're losing.

  52. So our communion weekend is like it's summer and it's winter,

  53. all rolled into one.

  54. And so I think that, I hope, makes this a helpful chapter for us to turn to this evening.

  55. And one of the things that John is doing in his gospel,

  56. like all the other gospel writers,

  57. is he's trying to get us to understand more about who Jesus is.

  58. And in particular, he's trying to help us understand why Jesus has come.

  59. And I want us to think about that in a bit more detail tonight.

  60. And the title that we're going to use is Fixing and Breaking.

  61. Because that's what one of the things that this passage helps us to see,

  62. that Jesus has come to fix, but Jesus has also come to break.

  63. And these are two things that we need to recognize and understand,

  64. and we need to apply them to our own lives.

  65. And so what's he fixing?

  66. What's he breaking?

  67. Well, we're going to have two headings.

  68. The first heading is that Jesus has come to fix brokenness.

  69. And we see that so powerfully in this chapter.

  70. But the second heading, which I'm a bit hesitant to give you,

  71. but I'm going to give it to you anyway,

  72. is that he's come to break bonkers, ridiculous, stupid nonsense.

  73. Jesus has come to fix, and he's come to break.

  74. And we'll look at these two together.

  75. So first of all, fixing brokenness.

  76. I don't need to persuade any of you or anybody out in the world around us

  77. that there is a lot of brokenness in the world.

  78. We see that across the globe.

  79. We see that in our nation.

  80. We see that in our communities.

  81. We see it in our own lives as well.

  82. And maybe right now you are very much feeling the pain and the struggle of that.

  83. It happens in a thousand ways.

  84. Illness, addiction, loneliness, poverty, chronic pain, exhaustion, anxiety, stress.

  85. All of us experience these things to a greater or lesser degree at various points in our lives.

  86. And sometimes that brokenness is very, very obvious.

  87. It can be seen in people's lives.

  88. Other times it's very, very hidden.

  89. And we try to put on a good front,

  90. even though beneath it there is so much that feels broken and fragile.

  91. Whether it's visible, whether it's hidden.

  92. Either way, it's awful.

  93. And of course, the same was true in the days of the New Testament.

  94. And one place where you absolutely could see the brokenness of life with crystal clarity

  95. was at this pool of Bethesda that John takes us to in chapter 5.

  96. And I want you just to imagine walking around that pool.

  97. Verse 3 says,

  98. At that pool where there was five roofed colonies,

  99. in these lay a multitude of invalids, blind, lame, and paralyzed.

  100. And, you know, imagine just walking around that pool.

  101. You see people who have been there for years.

  102. They're filthy.

  103. And they're skin and bone.

  104. Some of them can't see anything, so they're crying out in distress.

  105. Many of them can hardly move.

  106. Some of them are completely paralyzed.

  107. And you're walking around that pool and it's awful what you see.

  108. So much brokenness before your eyes.

  109. And among them, among all those people,

  110. is a man who has been ill for 38 years.

  111. And he and all the other people there are waiting for the waters to be stirred.

  112. And they believe that if those waters got stirred,

  113. whoever got into the pool first was going to be healed.

  114. Now, some of you may have the King James Version in front of you

  115. or some of you may remember the King James Version from when you used it in years gone by.

  116. You may remember that it has a verse here that is not included in the ESV.

  117. So the King James Version, at the end of verse 3,

  118. says that there's blind, lame, paralyzed.

  119. And then it says,

  120. Waiting for the moving of the water.

  121. For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool and troubled the water.

  122. Whosoever then first, after the troubling of the water, stepped in,

  123. was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.

  124. Now, this is an example of what we call a textual variant.

  125. And so I'll just explain what that means.

  126. We have hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of manuscripts of the New Testament.

  127. And these have been found across various locations in the Mediterranean from the classical period.

  128. And they've been gathered, examined, and studied by scholars for centuries.

  129. And one of the remarkable things for attesting the truth of the New Testament

  130. is the fact that we have so many of these documents.

  131. And the numbers of manuscripts for the Greek New Testament

  132. far outweigh the numbers that have been found for other ancient pieces of literature.

  133. But because there's so many,

  134. occasionally there are small variations between the texts.

  135. So what one manuscript says is not always identical to what another manuscript says.

  136. And that's what you call a textual variant.

  137. And this is an example of that.

  138. That some texts include the verse that was included in the King James Version,

  139. which describes an angel coming down, stirring the waters,

  140. and whoever got in there first was made whole of the disease that they had.

  141. The ESV that most of us use in our congregations now

  142. is based on manuscripts that have been found,

  143. many of which have been found since the King James Translation was made,

  144. many of which are earlier, from an earlier period than when the King James manuscripts were compiled.

  145. And this verse is missing.

  146. And scholars debate this, and you may have some different opinions on it yourself,

  147. but those who translated the ESV would argue that because the earlier manuscripts do not have this verse,

  148. it's likely that it was added at a later date and was not originally part of John's Gospel.

  149. And I am persuaded by that argument myself,

  150. but if anybody is not sure about that or would like to ask more about it,

  151. I'd be more than happy to speak to you after the service.

  152. What I want to highlight, though, is that there was clearly this idea

  153. that if you got into the pool first, you would be healed.

  154. We know that from the verse a little bit further down, where it says in verse 7,

  155. the sick man says to Jesus, you know, if the pool in the water,

  156. when the water's stirred up, someone else gets in there before me.

  157. And the big question is this, did the pool really work?

  158. Or was it just a superstition?

  159. Was it really the case that, you know, if someone got in there first, they would be healed?

  160. Or was it just a superstition?

  161. That's something that we need to kind of make a judgment call on.

  162. And again, you can discuss that together over the weekend.

  163. Did it really work?

  164. Was it a superstition?

  165. I think it was probably a superstition.

  166. And I may be wrong in that,

  167. but it certainly looks as though it was.

  168. And it looks as though it wasn't as effective as they thought it would be.

  169. And it definitely wasn't working for this man.

  170. He'd been an invalid for 38 years.

  171. And whatever healing this pool was supposed to give him,

  172. it was not working.

  173. And so he's caught in this negative spiral,

  174. where he's convinced that if the waters are stirred,

  175. and he gets in there first, he's going to be healed.

  176. But he can't get into the water quickly enough,

  177. because no one's there to help him.

  178. And as a result, he's stuck, paralyzed,

  179. a chronic invalid beside this pool.

  180. But then Jesus comes to him.

  181. And I love how Jesus speaks to this man.

  182. He asks him a very simple question.

  183. Do you want to be healed?

  184. In verse 6.

  185. And the man gives this really elaborate answer.

  186. And he's kind of basically saying how everything's against him.

  187. And you know, with the waters are stirred,

  188. I can't get down there, and no one can help me.

  189. And I'm stuck.

  190. And there's sort of this complicated story of how everything is going against him.

  191. And, you know, whether he wants to be healed or not is kind of irrelevant,

  192. because circumstances are just making it impossible for him.

  193. He gives Jesus an elaborate answer.

  194. Jesus responds with quite a blunt reply.

  195. He says,

  196. Get up.

  197. Get up.

  198. Take up your bed.

  199. And walk.

  200. And I love how Jesus just cuts right through all the complexity and difficulty of the man's circumstances.

  201. He dismantles the spiral of negativity that the man's got himself into,

  202. tells the man to get up, take his bed, and walk.

  203. And that is exactly what happens.

  204. And it's remarkable.

  205. And there's two or three things I want us just to notice from this.

  206. First is that all of this is pointing us to the fact that Jesus has come to fix brokenness.

  207. Like every other healing miracle that Jesus performed in his ministry,

  208. this is pointing us to the great work of restoration that Jesus has come to do.

  209. That's one of the things that the miracles is pointing us to,

  210. the fact that Jesus has come to put right the things that are broken.

  211. And it's massively important for that to shape how we view the world around us,

  212. because we live in a time, and our own experience can be one,

  213. where we see so much brokenness in the world around us,

  214. and sometimes we experience so much brokenness ourselves,

  215. that we can easily conclude that it's just part of life that we've got to accept.

  216. But the Bible never makes brokenness and suffering acceptable or welcome in our experience in that kind of way.

  217. Instead, the Bible teaches us that the brokenness that we see in the world around us

  218. is an unwanted intrusion into the world.

  219. So every illness, every injustice, every bruise,

  220. all suffering, all pain, all anguish,

  221. Jesus never looks at that and thinks,

  222. oh, well, it's the way it is.

  223. Jesus looks at that and says,

  224. that's wrong.

  225. That is not the way things are meant to be.

  226. And all the suffering that we experience,

  227. and that the people around us experience,

  228. and that we see in the world,

  229. it can all be traced back to the fact that sin

  230. has broken God's creation.

  231. Things are not the way God made them to be.

  232. Things are not the way God wants them to be.

  233. Sin has caused so much brokenness.

  234. Jesus has come to put things right.

  235. He's come to fix it.

  236. Now, the crucial thing we have to recognize

  237. is that work of restoration is not instantaneous,

  238. and it's not going to be completed

  239. until he returns.

  240. But it has begun.

  241. And these miracles are a glimpse

  242. of that great work of restoration

  243. that Jesus has come to do.

  244. Jesus' great goal is a world

  245. where he will wipe away every tear from our eyes,

  246. and death shall be no more.

  247. Neither shall there be mourning,

  248. nor crying, nor pain anymore,

  249. for the former things have passed away.

  250. Now, this is one of the reasons

  251. why Christianity is so intellectually satisfying.

  252. And this is incredibly important to remember

  253. because often people think that to be a Christian,

  254. you kind of have to leave your brain behind

  255. and just ignore all the facts around you

  256. that are arguing against Christianity,

  257. and you just have to embrace this kind of blind faith

  258. that's hoping for the best.

  259. That is absolutely not true at all.

  260. This is where you see

  261. how intellectually satisfying the gospel is.

  262. Because if you abandon the Bible,

  263. if you reject the idea of God,

  264. and if you say that Jesus has got nothing to offer us,

  265. then ultimately, when you look at suffering,

  266. all you can say is,

  267. that is just part of life.

  268. But with the Bible,

  269. and with the gospel,

  270. you can look at all the pain

  271. and sorrow and hurt in the world,

  272. and you can say,

  273. I know that that is wrong.

  274. Jesus has come to heal and restore

  275. and fix a broken world.

  276. The second thing I want you to see

  277. is that this work of fixing

  278. is done in a very particular way by Jesus.

  279. It's done through his words.

  280. What does Jesus do in John 5?

  281. He just speaks.

  282. He tells the man to get up,

  283. and he's renewed.

  284. And this is another example

  285. of the many, many times

  286. that you will see Jesus

  287. making something happen by speaking.

  288. That's what you see throughout the gospels.

  289. Jesus speaks,

  290. and people are healed.

  291. Jesus speaks,

  292. and the waves are calmed.

  293. Jesus speaks,

  294. and his work is accomplished.

  295. Jesus does it again,

  296. and again,

  297. and again.

  298. Another question I want you to think about.

  299. Jesus speaks,

  300. and his purposes are accomplished.

  301. When was the first time

  302. he did that?

  303. When was the first time

  304. you see

  305. the voice

  306. of God the Son

  307. speaking,

  308. and something happens?

  309. Well, I think the first time

  310. that you see that

  311. is on the very first page

  312. of the Bible

  313. when he says,

  314. let there be light.

  315. Remember,

  316. John already told us

  317. in chapter 1

  318. that it is through the Son

  319. that all things

  320. were created.

  321. it's through God the Son

  322. that the work of creation

  323. was accomplished,

  324. and he did it

  325. by speaking.

  326. That's why it's no surprise

  327. that John calls Jesus

  328. the Word,

  329. and that's why

  330. what we see in Jesus' ministry

  331. is just a continuation

  332. from what he did

  333. at the very beginning

  334. of the universe.

  335. He speaks,

  336. and it brings life

  337. and order

  338. and healing

  339. and restoration.

  340. And all of this

  341. makes perfect sense

  342. because everything

  343. fits together

  344. because this is why

  345. the whole of Christianity

  346. is grounded

  347. on a message.

  348. It's grounded

  349. on words.

  350. And that's why

  351. we don't come to church

  352. and bow down

  353. before a statue.

  354. That's why

  355. we come to church

  356. and we open a book

  357. because it's his words

  358. that bring life.

  359. And this is where

  360. you see

  361. the contrast

  362. with the kind of superstition

  363. that maybe

  364. this paralyzed man,

  365. this invalid,

  366. had fallen into the trap of.

  367. Certainly you see

  368. that suspicion

  369. all over the world,

  370. kind of weird rituals

  371. and ideas.

  372. All of this

  373. is reminding us

  374. that the key thing

  375. that we need

  376. in order to be saved,

  377. in order to be healed

  378. and to be restored

  379. is to listen

  380. and to trust

  381. what Jesus

  382. is seeing.

  383. So this

  384. fixing of brokenness

  385. is pointing us

  386. to the work

  387. of restoration

  388. that Jesus

  389. has come to do.

  390. It's being achieved

  391. through his words.

  392. But the third thing

  393. I want you to notice

  394. is that this incident

  395. is an example

  396. of what we could call

  397. blunt grace.

  398. I don't think

  399. it's a very

  400. technical theological term,

  401. but I think

  402. it's a helpful term.

  403. It's definitely

  404. what we see here.

  405. Now when I say blunt,

  406. I don't mean blunt

  407. in like a rude

  408. or offensive way,

  409. but blunt in a way

  410. that it just

  411. cuts right across

  412. all the complexity

  413. and confusion

  414. that this sick man

  415. has got in his head.

  416. And that blunt,

  417. clear message

  418. that Jesus gives him

  419. is a message

  420. of grace.

  421. The man's

  422. completely helpless.

  423. He cannot do anything.

  424. Jesus

  425. does it all.

  426. And you see

  427. the same message

  428. of blunt grace

  429. not just

  430. for the man's

  431. salvation,

  432. you also see it

  433. for his sanctification

  434. later in the chapter

  435. because in verse 14

  436. Jesus meets him

  437. in the temple

  438. and says to him,

  439. see you are well,

  440. sin no more,

  441. that nothing worse

  442. may happen to you.

  443. Now that's the kind

  444. of verse that can

  445. maybe leave ourselves,

  446. that can leave us

  447. a wee bit tied up

  448. in knots or uncertain

  449. because we think,

  450. well, is Jesus saying,

  451. well, you know,

  452. your sickness was

  453. because you sinned?

  454. And are we saying

  455. that, well,

  456. everybody by that pool,

  457. they were sick

  458. because they sinned?

  459. And is it always

  460. a consequence

  461. that anybody who's sick

  462. or anyone for whom

  463. something bad happens

  464. to them is because

  465. of something wrong

  466. that they have done?

  467. It's easy to jump

  468. to that conclusion

  469. and many people have,

  470. but that's not the case.

  471. And we know

  472. it's not the case

  473. because other parts

  474. of scripture teach us

  475. that it's not the case.

  476. Often our suffering

  477. is not because of

  478. anything specific

  479. that we have done.

  480. In fact,

  481. John's gospel,

  482. John chapter 9

    John 9 chapter mention

  483. is a very,

  484. very clear

  485. and important

  486. example of that.

  487. So why does Jesus

  488. say this to him?

  489. Sin no more

  490. that nothing worse

  491. may happen to you.

  492. Well, it could just

  493. be a general warning

  494. to the man

  495. to say that

  496. as he follows him,

  497. he needs to make sure

  498. that he doesn't

  499. turn away.

  500. But at the same time,

  501. we do need to recognize

  502. that there are ways

  503. in which some suffering

  504. can be the result

  505. of a specific

  506. sinful behavior.

  507. So I don't know

  508. if this is the case,

  509. but I just want you

  510. to imagine.

  511. Imagine that this man

  512. was a gambling addict

  513. and 38 years earlier

  514. he'd lost everything.

  515. He'd lost his home,

  516. he'd lost his family,

  517. he'd lost his income,

  518. he'd become destitute,

  519. malnourished,

  520. and eventually crippled.

  521. And every time

  522. he got any money,

  523. he just immediately

  524. lost it

  525. by gambling again.

  526. If that was the case,

  527. you could very much

  528. understand it

  529. if Jesus said,

  530. look,

  531. don't sin anymore,

  532. don't gamble again.

  533. And maybe

  534. that's the kind of situation

  535. that Jesus was dealing with.

  536. As I say,

  537. we don't know for sure.

  538. Either way,

  539. whatever Jesus is saying,

  540. he is saying it bluntly,

  541. but that bluntness

  542. is conveying grace.

  543. It's a message

  544. to help the man.

  545. It's the message

  546. that gives the man

  547. everything that he needs.

  548. And in order to benefit

  549. from it,

  550. all the man has to do

  551. is trust

  552. what's been said to him

  553. and listen.

  554. Jesus gave a message

  555. of blunt grace

  556. and sometimes

  557. that's what we need.

  558. And so,

  559. there are many times

  560. in life

  561. when we need

  562. encouragement,

  563. many times

  564. when we need

  565. gentle persuasion,

  566. many times

  567. when we need

  568. to just be,

  569. you know,

  570. patiently helped

  571. along a particular path.

  572. And in many ways,

  573. that's the way

  574. I would always

  575. like to be spoken to

  576. and that's the way

  577. I would always like

  578. to speak to others.

  579. But alongside that,

  580. when it comes

  581. to listening to Jesus,

  582. when it comes to

  583. responding to the gospel,

  584. when it comes to

  585. reaching out

  586. to a community,

  587. when it comes

  588. to inviting

  589. a friend

  590. to church,

  591. when it comes

  592. to putting

  593. your faith

  594. in Jesus,

  595. when it comes

  596. to professing

  597. your faith

  598. in Jesus,

  599. sometimes

  600. we need

  601. a blunt,

  602. gracious

  603. kick.

  604. And that's

  605. exactly

  606. what this man

  607. got.

  608. Jesus said,

  609. get up.

  610. And he did.

  611. And that

  612. blunt grace

  613. is sometimes

  614. where the gospel

  615. is at its

  616. most powerful.

  617. And so Jesus

  618. came to fix

  619. brokenness.

  620. That's our first

  621. heading.

  622. But our second

  623. heading is

  624. that he has

  625. come also

  626. to break

  627. bonkers,

  628. ridiculous,

  629. stupid nonsense.

  630. There's a lot

  631. of brokenness

  632. in the world,

  633. as we said,

  634. but there's also

  635. a lot of

  636. bonkers,

  637. ridiculous,

  638. stupid nonsense

  639. in the world,

  640. especially

  641. when it comes

  642. to religion.

  643. And that's

  644. exactly what

  645. you see

  646. in this passage

  647. before us.

  648. Verse 9

  649. tells us

  650. that the healing

  651. took place

  652. on the Sabbath

  653. and the controversy

  654. immediately arises

  655. among the Jews

  656. because the man

  657. is carrying his mat,

  658. which in their eyes

  659. is a breach

  660. of God's law.

  661. But this is one

  662. of many examples

  663. that we see in the gospel

  664. where the Jews

  665. had added a whole

  666. extra layer

  667. of requirements

  668. on top of what

  669. God's law required.

  670. So God's command

  671. rightly and graciously

  672. instructs us

  673. to keep the Sabbath

  674. as a day

  675. that is to be holy

  676. and a day where

  677. we can rest

  678. from our work.

  679. And the Jews

  680. added all sorts

  681. of additional details

  682. to that

  683. to say

  684. that you can't

  685. carry a bed,

  686. you can't walk

  687. a certain distance,

  688. you can't do this,

  689. you can't do that.

  690. And so this man

  691. by obeying Jesus

  692. is breaking

  693. their commandment.

  694. And of course

  695. we can relate to this

  696. in our context,

  697. we can relate to it

  698. with Sabbath keeping

  699. with lots of things

  700. that have been added

  701. over the years

  702. to add extra pressure

  703. in regard to how

  704. the Sabbath

  705. is to be observed.

  706. We've seen it

  707. in other parts

  708. of life as well.

  709. The result of all

  710. of that is that

  711. instead of rejoicing

  712. that this man

  713. is healed,

  714. the Jews are

  715. criticizing him.

  716. In their eyes,

  717. the fact that

  718. this 38-year invalid

  719. can walk again

  720. is a bad thing.

  721. And it's crazy.

  722. It's utterly bewildering.

  723. And you can see

  724. it seems to have

  725. a very damaging effect

  726. on the man himself.

  727. When he's confronted

  728. by the Jews,

  729. he immediately wants

  730. to put the blame

  731. on Jesus

  732. and to deflect attention

  733. away from himself.

  734. And it does seem

  735. that the man

  736. becomes very quickly

  737. more concerned

  738. about what the Jews

  739. around him think

  740. rather than

  741. he is concerned

  742. with actually following

  743. Jesus

  744. and listening to the man

  745. who's healed him.

  746. In fact,

  747. when you get to

  748. verses 14-18

  749. when Jesus speaks

  750. to him in the temple,

  751. the man goes

  752. and reports Jesus

  753. to the Jews.

  754. This prompts

  755. a confrontation.

  756. And they attack Jesus

  757. because he healed

  758. the man on the Sabbath.

  759. And then Jesus responds

  760. in verse 17

  761. by saying,

  762. my father is working

  763. until now

  764. and I am working.

  765. And that just makes

  766. everything worse.

  767. The tension escalates

  768. and it takes us

  769. to verse 18

  770. where it says

  771. that the Jews

  772. were seeking

  773. all the more

  774. to kill him

  775. because not only

  776. was he breaking

  777. the Sabbath

  778. but he was even

  779. calling God

  780. his own father

  781. making himself

  782. equal with God.

  783. Jesus goes on

  784. later in the chapter

  785. to say more

  786. about his equality

  787. with the father.

  788. This is part of

  789. the incredibly rich

  790. teaching that's

  791. going to emerge

  792. in John 5, 6, 7

  793. and beyond.

  794. I want us

  795. just to notice

  796. a crucial lesson

  797. that arises

  798. from the ridiculous

  799. nonsense

  800. of the people

  801. who are criticizing

  802. Jesus.

  803. Their argument

  804. is like this.

  805. Jesus is making

  806. himself equal

  807. with God

  808. and that's

  809. a reason

  810. for us

  811. to kill him.

  812. That was their

  813. great criticism.

  814. Jesus is making

  815. himself equal

  816. with God.

  817. He needs to die

  818. we need to

  819. find a way

  820. in order

  821. to put him

  822. to death.

  823. But there's

  824. a huge irony

  825. in what's

  826. happening here

  827. because these

  828. Jews

  829. when they

  830. took

  831. the fourth

  832. commandment

  833. and added

  834. all their

  835. additional

  836. requirements

  837. to it

  838. and when

  839. they

  840. judged

  841. what

  842. Sabbath

  843. keeping

  844. does

  845. and does

  846. not

  847. look like

  848. and when

  849. they decided

  850. that healing

  851. this man

  852. who's been

  853. sick for

  854. 38 years

  855. was a

  856. bad thing

  857. rather than

  858. a good

  859. thing

  860. and when

  861. they reached

  862. the verdict

  863. that Jesus

  864. deserves to

  865. die

  866. what are

  867. they doing?

  868. They

  869. are making

  870. themselves

  871. equal

  872. with God.

  873. They were

  874. saying to

  875. God

  876. your rules

  877. aren't enough

  878. so we're

  879. going to

  880. add some

  881. more.

  882. Your

  883. terms

  884. aren't

  885. adequate

  886. so we're

  887. going to

  888. set them

  889. and your

  890. ways

  891. aren't

  892. really

  893. suitable

  894. so we're

  895. going to

  896. do things

  897. our way

  898. instead.

  899. And by

  900. adding their

  901. own rules

  902. this is the

  903. thing that's

  904. so important

  905. to see

  906. that by

  907. adding their

  908. own rules

  909. by doing

  910. things their

  911. way they

  912. were not

  913. honouring

  914. God.

  915. They were

  916. actually saying

  917. that God's

  918. commands were

  919. not good

  920. enough and

  921. the minute

  922. they did

  923. that they

  924. made

  925. themselves

  926. equal

  927. with God.

  928. But the

  929. really scary

  930. thing

  931. is that we

  932. do exactly

  933. the same

  934. thing.

  935. In fact

  936. that's what

  937. lies at the

  938. heart of

  939. the human

  940. condition.

  941. That's what

  942. sin has

  943. done to

  944. us.

  945. When the

  946. devil tempted

  947. Eve to

  948. sin against

  949. God in

  950. Genesis 3

  951. what did

  952. he say?

  953. He said

  954. you'll not

  955. surely die

  956. God knows

  957. that when

  958. you eat

  959. of the

  960. fruit

  961. your eyes

  962. will be

  963. open and

  964. you will

  965. be like

  966. God

  967. knowing

  968. good and

  969. evil.

  970. In other

  971. words the

  972. devil tempted

  973. Eve with

  974. the promise

  975. with the

  976. lie that

  977. she could

  978. make herself

  979. equal with

  980. God.

  981. And that's

  982. been the

  983. constant

  984. trait of

  985. human behaviour

  986. ever since.

  987. We want to

  988. do things on

  989. our own

  990. terms.

  991. We want to

  992. make our

  993. own rules.

  994. We want

  995. God to

  996. listen to

  997. us instead

  998. of us

  999. listening to

  1000. him.

  1001. But when

  1002. we do

  1003. that we

  1004. are making

  1005. ourselves

  1006. equal with

  1007. God because

  1008. we're putting

  1009. ourselves

  1010. alongside

  1011. God.

  1012. Maybe we're

  1013. even putting

  1014. ourselves above

  1015. God and

  1016. saying to

  1017. God this

  1018. is how

  1019. things should

  1020. work.

  1021. This is the

  1022. way it's

  1023. meant to

  1024. be.

  1025. And

  1026. really

  1027. that's the

  1028. two choices

  1029. that we

  1030. have in

  1031. response to

  1032. the gospel.

  1033. We either

  1034. listen to

  1035. God and

  1036. respond the

  1037. way he

  1038. commands to

  1039. us or

  1040. we do our

  1041. own thing

  1042. and we

  1043. make ourselves

  1044. equal with

  1045. God.

  1046. There is no

  1047. third option.

  1048. And it's

  1049. really important

  1050. that this

  1051. one thing

  1052. can happen

  1053. in two

  1054. very opposite

  1055. ways.

  1056. I want you

  1057. to imagine

  1058. two people.

  1059. One of

  1060. them hears

  1061. the gospel

  1062. and says

  1063. Christianity

  1064. is not for

  1065. me, not

  1066. interested, I

  1067. don't need

  1068. God, I'm

  1069. fine as I

  1070. am, I'm

  1071. going to

  1072. live my

  1073. own life and

  1074. do things

  1075. my own

  1076. way.

  1077. And off

  1078. they go.

  1079. And

  1080. obviously

  1081. they're not

  1082. interested in

  1083. what God

  1084. thinks, they're

  1085. making themselves

  1086. their God,

  1087. they're making

  1088. themselves equal

  1089. with God.

  1090. But the

  1091. other person

  1092. says this,

  1093. I'm

  1094. not good

  1095. enough for

  1096. God.

  1097. So I

  1098. need to

  1099. make sure

  1100. that I

  1101. get myself

  1102. into a

  1103. better

  1104. condition.

  1105. So I'm

  1106. going to

  1107. start praying

  1108. five times

  1109. a day and

  1110. I'm going

  1111. to make

  1112. sure I

  1113. give more

  1114. money to

  1115. the poor.

  1116. I'm going

  1117. to cut

  1118. myself off

  1119. from TV

  1120. and from

  1121. music.

  1122. I'm only

  1123. going to

  1124. eat plain

  1125. food.

  1126. I'm going

  1127. to fast

  1128. twice a

  1129. week.

  1130. I'm never

  1131. going to

  1132. go on

  1133. social

  1134. media or

  1135. YouTube or

  1136. anything like

  1137. that.

  1138. In fact, I'm

  1139. going to

  1140. avoid all

  1141. relationships,

  1142. I'm going

  1143. to have a

  1144. life of

  1145. celibacy and

  1146. every time I

  1147. do something

  1148. wrong I

  1149. am going to

  1150. whip myself

  1151. to make

  1152. atonement for

  1153. my sin.

  1154. So the

  1155. one guy

  1156. wanders off,

  1157. no interest

  1158. in God and

  1159. does his

  1160. own thing.

  1161. And the

  1162. other person

  1163. makes all

  1164. of these

  1165. rules in

  1166. order to

  1167. get up to

  1168. the standard

  1169. that he

  1170. thinks is

  1171. required.

  1172. They look

  1173. completely

  1174. different.

  1175. They're both

  1176. doing exactly

  1177. the same

  1178. thing.

  1179. They're both

  1180. making

  1181. themselves

  1182. equal with

  1183. God.

  1184. Because the

  1185. guy who's

  1186. doing his

  1187. own thing

  1188. is saying,

  1189. well, I

  1190. can do

  1191. what I

  1192. like.

  1193. My opinion

  1194. is just as

  1195. important as

  1196. God's opinion.

  1197. That's the

  1198. antinomian,

  1199. doing what

  1200. they want.

  1201. the person

  1202. on this

  1203. side is

  1204. the

  1205. legalist.

  1206. But the

  1207. legalist is

  1208. making himself

  1209. equal to

  1210. God just

  1211. as much as

  1212. the other

  1213. guy.

  1214. Because he

  1215. is setting

  1216. his own

  1217. rules rather

  1218. than listening

  1219. to what

  1220. God is

  1221. saying.

  1222. And what

  1223. I hope you

  1224. can see is

  1225. that all of

  1226. it is

  1227. absolutely

  1228. bonkers.

  1229. others.

  1230. But it

  1231. happens in

  1232. so many

  1233. ways.

  1234. And

  1235. it's a

  1236. good question

  1237. to ask

  1238. ourselves.

  1239. Am I

  1240. allowing

  1241. something

  1242. that is

  1243. not right

  1244. and something

  1245. that's actually

  1246. ridiculous?

  1247. Am I

  1248. allowing that

  1249. to

  1250. imprison

  1251. me

  1252. and to

  1253. control

  1254. me

  1255. in my

  1256. life?

  1257. And so

  1258. here's some

  1259. of the

  1260. things that

  1261. we can

  1262. think in

  1263. our lives.

  1264. We can

  1265. think

  1266. I

  1267. have

  1268. absolutely

  1269. no

  1270. gifts

  1271. and I'm

  1272. of no

  1273. use to

  1274. anybody.

  1275. We can

  1276. think to

  1277. ourselves

  1278. my prayers

  1279. are

  1280. just

  1281. pathetic.

  1282. They're a

  1283. waste of

  1284. words and

  1285. God's not

  1286. listening.

  1287. We can

  1288. think to

  1289. ourselves

  1290. that

  1291. I can't

  1292. go forward

  1293. to the

  1294. Lord's

  1295. table

  1296. because I'm

  1297. not worthy.

  1298. I'm

  1299. not good

  1300. enough

  1301. and I

  1302. shouldn't

  1303. do it.

  1304. We can

  1305. think to

  1306. ourselves

  1307. there's no

  1308. point

  1309. in

  1310. time to

  1311. evangelize

  1312. because

  1313. we can't

  1314. do it

  1315. anyway.

  1316. It's only

  1317. the Holy

  1318. Spirit that

  1319. can convert

  1320. people.

  1321. There's no

  1322. point in

  1323. us

  1324. making any

  1325. attempt

  1326. to witness.

  1327. mistakes and

  1328. we can

  1329. think to

  1330. ourselves

  1331. I've

  1332. made too

  1333. many

  1334. mistakes.

  1335. I've

  1336. messed up

  1337. too badly

  1338. and God

  1339. will never

  1340. forgive me.

  1341. If you

  1342. believe

  1343. any of

  1344. those things

  1345. then you

  1346. are believing

  1347. bonkers

  1348. ridiculous

  1349. stupid

  1350. nonsense

  1351. because

  1352. none of

  1353. that's

  1354. true.

  1355. None of

  1356. that is

  1357. ever

  1358. true.

  1359. And

  1360. Jesus has

  1361. come to

  1362. break

  1363. every

  1364. crazy

  1365. idea

  1366. that we

  1367. have

  1368. that makes

  1369. the gospel

  1370. more difficult

  1371. than it needs

  1372. to be.

  1373. And you

  1374. know we do

  1375. that all the

  1376. time.

  1377. We make

  1378. the gospel

  1379. more difficult

  1380. than it needs

  1381. to be.

  1382. And that's

  1383. exactly what

  1384. these Jews

  1385. were doing.

  1386. They were

  1387. making it

  1388. so much

  1389. harder,

  1390. so much

  1391. more

  1392. complicated,

  1393. so much

  1394. more of

  1395. a burden.

  1396. And Jesus

  1397. has come

  1398. to break

  1399. all of

  1400. that.

  1401. But do

  1402. you know

  1403. he breaks

  1404. it in

  1405. the most

  1406. magnificent

  1407. and beautiful

  1408. way.

  1409. Because the

  1410. incredible thing

  1411. about Jesus

  1412. is that he

  1413. actually is

  1414. equal with

  1415. God.

  1416. That's the

  1417. big point

  1418. that John

  1419. wants us

  1420. to recognise.

  1421. Yet he

  1422. was willing

  1423. to lay

  1424. aside all

  1425. the glory

  1426. and status

  1427. that he

  1428. deserves.

  1429. He came

  1430. down to

  1431. be alongside

  1432. us.

  1433. He came

  1434. to die

  1435. in place

  1436. of us.

  1437. And this

  1438. is where

  1439. we see

  1440. an astonishing

  1441. contrast

  1442. between the

  1443. mindset of

  1444. the Jews

  1445. and the

  1446. mindset

  1447. of Jesus.

  1448. Because the

  1449. Jews in

  1450. this passage

  1451. made

  1452. themselves

  1453. equal with

  1454. God by

  1455. making up

  1456. their own

  1457. commands.

  1458. But in

  1459. their opposition

  1460. to what

  1461. they saw

  1462. in Jesus

  1463. and the

  1464. idea that

  1465. he was

  1466. making

  1467. himself

  1468. equal

  1469. with

  1470. God,

  1471. they said

  1472. he deserves

  1473. to die,

  1474. we want

  1475. to kill

  1476. him.

  1477. Jesus

  1478. actually is

  1479. equal with

  1480. God,

  1481. but he

  1482. comes to

  1483. these people,

  1484. these people

  1485. who are

  1486. making up

  1487. their own

  1488. rules and

  1489. who are

  1490. making things

  1491. far more

  1492. complicated than

  1493. they need

  1494. to,

  1495. who think

  1496. that they

  1497. know better

  1498. and who

  1499. actually want

  1500. to put

  1501. him to

  1502. death and

  1503. Jesus

  1504. comes

  1505. to die

  1506. for them.

  1507. Jesus

  1508. comes

  1509. to save

  1510. them.

  1511. And

  1512. that is

  1513. the amazing

  1514. thing about

  1515. the gospel

  1516. is that

  1517. in order

  1518. to fix

  1519. us,

  1520. Jesus

  1521. gave

  1522. himself

  1523. to be

  1524. broken.

  1525. And in

  1526. doing so,

  1527. in giving

  1528. himself,

  1529. he does

  1530. absolutely

  1531. everything,

  1532. everything

  1533. that is

  1534. needed

  1535. for our

  1536. salvation.

  1537. And here

  1538. is where

  1539. there is

  1540. such a

  1541. crucial point

  1542. that we

  1543. always need

  1544. to remember,

  1545. that in

  1546. our

  1547. Christian

  1548. lives,

  1549. nonsense

  1550. is far

  1551. more

  1552. dangerous

  1553. than

  1554. brokenness.

  1555. So you

  1556. might feel

  1557. like you

  1558. are so

  1559. broken,

  1560. brokenness,

  1561. either as

  1562. somebody who

  1563. is not

  1564. yet a

  1565. Christian

  1566. or even

  1567. as a

  1568. Christian.

  1569. You might

  1570. think,

  1571. I have

  1572. messed up

  1573. so much

  1574. and I

  1575. have

  1576. failed

  1577. Jesus

  1578. and I

  1579. am not

  1580. where I

  1581. want to

  1582. be.

  1583. And you

  1584. might feel

  1585. that you

  1586. are so

  1587. broken.

  1588. And we

  1589. think that

  1590. that

  1591. brokenness

  1592. is a

  1593. massive,

  1594. massive

  1595. problem.

  1596. We

  1597. must

  1598. recognize

  1599. that the

  1600. problem

  1601. is not

  1602. brokenness.

  1603. And the

  1604. danger

  1605. is not

  1606. brokenness.

  1607. the danger

  1608. is

  1609. nonsense.

  1610. Jesus

  1611. can fix

  1612. all the

  1613. brokenness.

  1614. And if

  1615. you're a

  1616. Christian,

  1617. he already

  1618. has.

  1619. But the

  1620. nonsense

  1621. will tell

  1622. you that

  1623. he can't

  1624. or that

  1625. he won't

  1626. or that

  1627. it's

  1628. different

  1629. for you.

  1630. that is

  1631. forever

  1632. and always

  1633. and eternally

  1634. nonsense.

  1635. And

  1636. instead

  1637. we have

  1638. the

  1639. beautiful

  1640. simplicity

  1641. of the

  1642. gospel

  1643. where

  1644. Jesus

  1645. comes to

  1646. us

  1647. with

  1648. majestic

  1649. blunt

  1650. grace

  1651. and he

  1652. says

  1653. get up.

  1654. And so

  1655. for all

  1656. of us

  1657. may

  1658. those

  1659. words

  1660. be our

  1661. guide

  1662. that

  1663. we

  1664. get up

  1665. from

  1666. here

  1667. we

  1668. go on

  1669. in our

  1670. lives

  1671. serving

  1672. him

  1673. and if

  1674. you're

  1675. thinking

  1676. about

  1677. professing

  1678. faith

  1679. then

  1680. please

  1681. please

  1682. get up

  1683. and come

  1684. and tell

  1685. the elders

  1686. in this

  1687. church

  1688. who love

  1689. you

  1690. that

  1691. you

  1692. love

  1693. Jesus.

  1694. and as

  1695. as we

  1696. look ahead

  1697. to the

  1698. Lord's

  1699. table

  1700. despite

  1701. our

  1702. feelings

  1703. of shame

  1704. and

  1705. frustration

  1706. and

  1707. disappointment

  1708. in

  1709. ourselves

  1710. we are

  1711. going to

  1712. lift our

  1713. eyes off

  1714. ourselves

  1715. we're

  1716. going to

  1717. get up

  1718. we're

  1719. going to

  1720. look to

  1721. Jesus

  1722. and we're

  1723. going to

  1724. rejoice

  1725. because he's

  1726. done everything

  1727. we need

  1728. Amen

  1729. let's pray

  1730. Lord Jesus

  1731. thank you

  1732. so so

  1733. much

  1734. for all

  1735. that you've

  1736. done

  1737. for us

  1738. all that

  1739. you've

  1740. come to

  1741. do

  1742. thank you

  1743. that you

  1744. come

  1745. to heal

  1746. our

  1747. brokenness

  1748. and you

  1749. cut through

  1750. all of

  1751. our

  1752. nonsense

  1753. and we

  1754. confess

  1755. that we

  1756. do

  1757. we tie

  1758. ourselves

  1759. in knots

  1760. we add

  1761. all sorts

  1762. of

  1763. complexities

  1764. we make

  1765. the gospel

  1766. far

  1767. harder

  1768. than you

  1769. have

  1770. ever

  1771. intended

  1772. it to

  1773. be

  1774. and we

  1775. pray

  1776. instead

  1777. that

  1778. every

  1779. one

  1780. of

  1781. us

  1782. would

  1783. just

  1784. hear

  1785. your

  1786. loving

  1787. commanding

  1788. voice

  1789. calling

  1790. us

  1791. to

  1792. come

  1793. to

  1794. you

  1795. to

  1796. be

  1797. refreshed

  1798. and

  1799. strengthened

  1800. by

  1801. you

  1802. and

  1803. to

  1804. live

  1805. for

  1806. you

  1807. every

  1808. day

  1809. of

  1810. our

  1811. lives

  1812. guide

  1813. us

  1814. and

  1815. direct

  1816. us

  1817. all

  1818. we

  1819. pray

  1820. in

  1821. Jesus

  1822. name

  1823. Amen

  1824. Our

  1825. concluding

  1826. psalm is

  1827. psalm 138

  1828. and we're

  1829. going to

  1830. sing

  1831. from the

  1832. sing

  1833. psalms

  1834. version

  1835. that's on

  1836. page 179

  1837. singing from

  1838. verse 4

  1839. to the

  1840. end of

  1841. the

  1842. psalm

  1843. O

  1844. Lord

  1845. let all

  1846. earth's

  1847. kings

  1848. give

  1849. praise

  1850. when

  1851. from

  1852. your

  1853. mouth

  1854. they

  1855. hear

  1856. your

  1857. word

  1858. let

  1859. them

  1860. extol

  1861. the

  1862. ways

  1863. of

  1864. God

  1865. for

  1866. great

  1867. the

  1868. glory

  1869. of

  1870. the

  1871. Lord

  1872. we'll

  1873. sing

  1874. 4

  1875. to

  1876. 8

  1877. we can

  1878. lift up

  1879. our

  1880. voices

  1881. in

  1882. thanksgiving

  1883. to Jesus

  1884. as we

  1885. sing

  1886. these

  1887. words

  1888. together

  1889. O

  1890. Lord

  1891. let

  1892. all

  1893. our

  1894. kings

  1895. give

  1896. praise

  1897. O

  1898. Lord

  1899. let

  1900. all

  1901. our

  1902. kings

  1903. give

  1904. praise

  1905. when

  1906. from

  1907. your

  1908. life

  1909. they

  1910. hear

  1911. your

  1912. word

  1913. and

  1914. let

  1915. !

  1916. go

  1917. the

  1918. ways

  1919. of

  1920. God

  1921. for

  1922. praise

  1923. the

  1924. glory

  1925. of

  1926. the

  1927. Lord

  1928. although

  1929. the

  1930. Lord

  1931. God

  1932. dwells

  1933. on

  1934. high

  1935. the

  1936. lowly

  1937. person

  1938. he

  1939. protects

  1940. he

  1941. whereas

  1942. the

  1943. blood

  1944. and

  1945. haughty

  1946. one

  1947. he

  1948. knows

  1949. the

  1950. blood

  1951. of

  1952. and

  1953. rejects

  1954. although

  1955. I

  1956. walk

  1957. a troubled

  1958. path

  1959. your

  1960. tender

  1961. care

  1962. preserves

  1963. my

  1964. life

  1965. you

  1966. raise

  1967. your

  1968. hand

  1969. against

  1970. my

  1971. foes

  1972. your

  1973. right

  1974. that

  1975. saves

  1976. me

  1977. from

  1978. their

  1979. strife

  1980. the

  1981. Lord

  1982. the

  1983. certainly

  1984. fulfill

  1985. for

  1986. me

  1987. the

  1988. purpose

  1989. he

  1990. commands

  1991. your

  1992. love

  1993. endures

  1994. forever

  1995. Lord

  1996. the

  1997. words

  1998. of

  1999. your

  2000. own

  2001. hands
