  1. Hello, my name is Kyla and welcome to this week's

  2. episode of Trinity Talks. My name is Amalvel.

  3. I'm Melissa. And I'm Ben. And we are here to

  4. continue our conversation about Growing Season,

  5. which is this teaching series that we're undergoing

  6. here at Trinity, where we're going back to the

  7. farm to learn what the farm has to teach us all

  8. about faith. And today we are talking about...

  9. intergenerational sort of farms intergenerational

  10. faith practices um and how often when you think

  11. about like a family farm you'll like sometimes

  12. see this is you know five generation family farms

  13. like it's passed down from like great -great

  14. -grandfather to great -grandfather to grandfather

  15. to father to son so on and so forth um And I

  16. think the same thing sometimes happens in our

  17. faith. Not always, but sometimes it is that sense

  18. of like, you know, we are families or at least

  19. somebody told somebody who told us, right, that

  20. we don't do this life of faith all alone. Yeah.

  21. And so just as you think about that concept of

  22. faith being passed down, as you think about sort

  23. of the sermon, are there any pieces that really

  24. sort of stand out to you? Well, for me, when

  25. Rob was talking about the different type of links

  26. in the chain, he talked about one of them being

  27. the first link, which would describe my situation

  28. for sure. I didn't grow up in a Christian family

  29. or a Christian household. Even though with my

  30. dad's side of the family, they grew up in the

  31. Baptist church. one of my uncles came to christ

  32. by the end of his life you know and and obviously

  33. with my mom's side of the family they're all

  34. muslims so that's not christian at all right

  35. so so yeah i mean it You know, I definitely relate

  36. to being a first link. Yeah, sure. And I think

  37. that that that's a really maybe not like entirely

  38. unique experience, but it's a it's a really sort

  39. of different experience than being sort of the

  40. second link or even like, you know, the fifth

  41. link or whatever. In a way, it's all it can be

  42. a lot more. In some ways, it can be a bit more

  43. challenging. Sure. You know, yeah. But then again,

  44. I mean, praise God, I was never fully. into Islam.

  45. I didn't fully connect with it, you know? So

  46. it helped, you know, the fact that I was sort

  47. of, you know, I had this period, uh, between

  48. leaving Islam and finding the church where I'm

  49. like, well, I believe in God, but I'm don't follow

  50. organized religion, you know? So it definitely

  51. helped because I know it's like, if you're like

  52. a developed Muslim, that's a very hard road to

  53. break. That's a very, That's a very difficult

  54. thing to break. Sure. Yeah, yeah, yeah. What

  55. about for you guys as you think about that? I

  56. think going straight off, my thought process

  57. went straight to the links as well. But I had

  58. the different link. I was the strong link that

  59. was being passed down. I grew up in a very Christian

  60. household with loving parents who were amazing,

  61. supportive and great brothers. So with all that

  62. kind of like privilege and really nice starting

  63. points. my process that i felt like responsible

  64. for is how do i carry that on how do i shoot

  65. this good chain going and not break it off or

  66. let it just kind of sure rot in the dust yeah

  67. yeah yeah what about you honestly i also thought

  68. of the links as well which i think is really

  69. cool that we all kind of um had that in our minds

  70. and um kind of similar to your story i So my

  71. family is also not very Christian. My mom and

  72. dad, they did not grow up in the church. However,

  73. the person who did tell me, you know, will start

  74. bringing me to church when I was very young,

  75. actually is my aunt. And she learned about Christianity

  76. and about Jesus from her mother as well in China.

  77. However, it's not a. that that's on the rare

  78. side essentially um well it was then and um and

  79. because of that like even though she told me

  80. about you know let's go to church she loved just

  81. being around the people she loved volunteering

  82. in kids church um I felt like I still felt very

  83. alone kind of in the process but I still do kind

  84. of see her as the link as well and then I do

  85. kind of relate to uh, being a first link as well

  86. for, um, my family and hopefully for my future

  87. children, God willing. Um, and just like you

  88. said, it's a hard, it is, it can be really hard,

  89. right? Sure. Because sometimes it feels like

  90. if a link together, um, with lots of like those

  91. little circles, I forgot what it was called.

  92. Um, it's so strong, but sometimes when it is

  93. just one, it feels kind of weak and it kind of

  94. feels like, sure. you know what is it going to

  95. hold up right and um but sometimes i just remind

  96. myself that if god has made you to be the first

  97. link there's a reason for that sure and ultimately

  98. in a way god is the first link and then yeah

  99. absolutely yeah that you're maybe like the first

  100. bit of the link like in your immediate family

  101. or maybe even in your extended family sometimes

  102. but that yeah you're not you didn't come out

  103. of nowhere yeah yeah right like your your faith

  104. was fed into by someone right and and i think

  105. that also then reminds me like when we think

  106. about our family context of like the importance

  107. of being linked as part of this chain outside

  108. of our like biological families as well right

  109. that being connected into christian community

  110. um also helps to strengthen that chain and gives

  111. us yeah spaces like even like for people you

  112. know we as we think about Passing on faith. And

  113. like if folks have mentioned, you know, coming

  114. from like parents to kids or grandparents or

  115. whatever. Right. Like that's great when that

  116. happens. But not everybody has biological children.

  117. Right. Not everybody has kids in their household.

  118. Right. But who are the people that we can pour

  119. into anyway? Yeah. It's also to say that we don't

  120. have to just pour into the people closest to

  121. us necessarily in a direct household, but you

  122. can pour into anyone you're around, whether you're

  123. around them often, whether it's your friends,

  124. whether it's your coworkers, it can be anyone.

  125. Yeah. Yeah. And then like, sometimes it's also

  126. not like. generational or like age related really

  127. like like sometimes i'm pouring into people who

  128. are the same age as me sometimes i'm pouring

  129. into people who are older than me and sometimes

  130. you know older folks are pouring into me sometimes

  131. younger folks are pouring into me right like

  132. there's something about just like getting all

  133. of these different experiences and people together

  134. in a space that really builds our chain so that

  135. it's more of like A web, I guess, than like a

  136. single line. I think about actually the first

  137. person who ever told me about Jesus. And it was

  138. at a Chinese church that me and my parents went

  139. to because we were looking for a community. I

  140. think I was like four years old, but it was actually

  141. the staff that was working in the kids church.

  142. And she told me about Jesus. And I was like,

  143. oh, this feels so lovely. Right. And then I just.

  144. I think we just maybe didn't go back moving forward.

  145. But I always remember her. And you're right.

  146. It's like in my immediate family, I think of

  147. myself as the first link. But actually, she was

  148. the link that connected me. And then my aunt

  149. built on that onto that. And then someone told

  150. her. And I think it's just a testimony to how

  151. cool. god is and the way that he works is just

  152. really really cool yeah yeah and that's not to

  153. like negate like if you feel like an individual

  154. link in a chain like that is still really hard

  155. and there are still like unique challenges that

  156. come with that yeah um right and we get to be

  157. part of this web of chains exactly yeah yeah

  158. so as As you think about your sort of faith story,

  159. are there people that you can think of who have

  160. like taken that time to pour into you and to

  161. help develop your faith? And like, yeah, what

  162. what sort of impact did that have on on your

  163. life? I mean, personally, I mean, I do know like

  164. there were a few family members that that were

  165. that are or that are kind of like legit Christians,

  166. you know, Bible believing Christians, but. I

  167. mean, I think for me, like what started, it was

  168. just sort of funny enough, like YouTube watching,

  169. you know, like the algorithm can work in a great

  170. way, you know? And it's just, I started, you

  171. know, I was looking at one subject and then that

  172. leads to something else and something else. And,

  173. you know, and so by the time I found Trinity

  174. Church, I was already watching some Christian

  175. content. Sure. But it wasn't, you know, it was.

  176. based off my own interests sure yeah so yeah

  177. no that's totally valid yeah yeah what what about

  178. for you for me i get to have the backing of a

  179. really nice family who sure helped me grow up

  180. christian but my mom my dad were especially always

  181. there for me helping me build just habits and

  182. values into my routines as well as my grandparents

  183. who are always there to help bring it up especially

  184. during family events sure it was easter or christmas

  185. chocolate is good presents are nice but it was

  186. always the reminder like there's something more

  187. important here sure yeah those were big factors

  188. big figures in my life sure on top of that one

  189. of the places i always love is a camp called

  190. fair havens where me and my family would always

  191. go just for every summer uh basically all the

  192. way up until covid for as long as i can remember

  193. And we just go there and hang out with tons of

  194. different Christians, learning more about Jesus,

  195. but also participating together in lots of different

  196. activities that all just have like a little Jesus

  197. twist on it. Sure. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But all

  198. those moments just build the habit of like every

  199. day, no matter what you're doing, where you are,

  200. Jesus is always with you and surrounding you.

  201. And you always ask questions, whether it's people

  202. younger than me playing with the kids who are

  203. a lot younger and go, oh, hey, they actually

  204. pick things up really quickly. They did that

  205. better than I did. Yeah. Or learning from people

  206. who have way more wisdom and experience than

  207. me. Sure. Always just being surrounded by people

  208. willing to give advice and support. Yeah. Yeah.

  209. Yeah. Yeah. And I just wanted to say as well,

  210. like, that's really cool because I remember in

  211. the sermon, Rob was kind of mentioning about

  212. Camp Trinity and how, yes, it's really awesome

  213. when the kids, you know, they're singing, they're

  214. standing in the chairs, but faith is also being

  215. grown in like those smaller moments, like bracelet

  216. making. And when you mentioned like, you know,

  217. just like your family and like the things that

  218. your parents taught you, I think. That is an

  219. example. It's like those smaller, more intimate

  220. moments. Yeah. And I think that's really cool.

  221. Thanks. I would say that for myself as well,

  222. it's those smaller, intimate moments that we've

  223. had with our life group, right? Like with you,

  224. Kyla, and with Jackie and Jesse and Jordan and

  225. Ira and all the people. I know I'm missing names.

  226. Please don't be mad. It's just things like that.

  227. it makes you want to keep coming back. Um, and

  228. then it just kind of reminds you that God is

  229. very relational. So when you are building those

  230. relationships that you're kind of like, Oh, like

  231. this is like kind of how it is with me and God.

  232. And this is how, um, things get past generation

  233. to generation or just, you know, people to people.

  234. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And I think about in my own

  235. sort of life and faith, just like all of the

  236. people, who like took a risk on me like like

  237. we're like hey kyla you can do this thing like

  238. go go lead this thing or like hey like ask those

  239. hard questions and like let's have those conversations

  240. right and like it's yeah it's those moments of

  241. people sort of yeah just taking that time to

  242. sort of say you know yeah because similarly like

  243. i grew up in a faith household so it wasn't necessarily

  244. that i needed to be presented with who jesus

  245. is and like the basics of the gospel but like

  246. my faith journey was a lot of like figuring out

  247. okay how do all the pieces fit together and like

  248. how do i want to live and what do i want to believe

  249. and in all of this right and so just having people

  250. to dialogue that way right and having people

  251. um who encouraged me and made me want to keep

  252. showing up, even when it was confusing and hard

  253. and messy. Yes. Right? You know, just feeling

  254. like, yeah, there is a space. where I can bring

  255. all of that. Right. And then also, I think, you

  256. know, like the piece that you were sort of saying

  257. a novel about like YouTube and like different

  258. sort of online resources and whatever, like that

  259. also really speaks to me because I think sometimes

  260. like I'm first, I encounter something in someone

  261. else or like in a conversation and I'm like,

  262. huh, that's. an interesting faith piece that

  263. I like haven't thought about before, but then

  264. like other resources, other people that I will

  265. never meet face to face have become the people

  266. that have like helped me think through things

  267. sort of differently. Yeah. Right. Sure. Yeah.

  268. So it's, it's so neat. I think to think about

  269. all of the links in the chain that are, that

  270. are family, that are friends, that are pastors

  271. or youth pastors that are authors and. people

  272. that i will never meet right but they're all

  273. people who have like poured into and shaped my

  274. faith and we're all connected somehow and i think

  275. it's also like um like for example trinity works

  276. um with is it united way uh with world vision

  277. oh sorry world vision to um support nueva frontera

  278. and even just that is like like it's like a chain

  279. is being made there, right? And so even when

  280. we're tithing and it's going to, whether it's

  281. tithing to Trinity, even if you're tithing to

  282. other organizations to support Christians, I

  283. think that's how chains are being made. If you're

  284. volunteering at a shelter or a soup kitchen or

  285. just meeting with people, that's also how chains

  286. are being made as well. I actually saw a quote

  287. on Instagram, which kind of speaks to the YouTube

  288. like Internet thing where it said the best sermons

  289. are the ones where you're showing people how

  290. you love and how you live. And I think that's

  291. especially for people who may not be in the faith.

  292. Like, I think that's one of the best ways to

  293. kind of build that link is that they see it through

  294. you. Sure. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. For sure. Yeah,

  295. so the scripture passage that Rob read as part

  296. of the sermon was from Deuteronomy chapter 6.

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  297. So I'm just going to read a couple of those verses

  298. for you. So Deuteronomy chapter 6, starting at

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  299. verse 7. Actually, I'll start at verse 6. So

  300. these commands I give you today are to be upon

  301. your hearts. Impress them upon your children.

  302. Talk about them when you sit at home and when

  303. you walk along the road and when you lie down

  304. and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your

  305. hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write

  306. them on the door frames of your houses and on

  307. your gates. And what stands out to me about those

  308. verses is just this, like... Just talk about

  309. it all the time in everyday moments, right? Talk

  310. about it when you're sitting at home, when you're

  311. walking on the road, when you're lying down,

  312. when you're getting up, when you're entering

  313. and exiting your home, like just in all of these

  314. sort of ordinary everyday moments. That's where

  315. faith is developed, where faith is shaped, where

  316. faith is sort of passed on. Yeah. So like, like,

  317. what do you think about that? Like, are there

  318. ways that you can sort of see faith being shaped

  319. or passed on in like ordinary everyday moments?

  320. Yeah, I think oftentimes just the little conversations

  321. with families or friends, the main area I see

  322. where it's just daily struggles. Hey, I went

  323. to work and this thing happened that I don't

  324. know what happened here. It was not my favorite

  325. interaction. Sure. And you have to have other

  326. people who see it from a different perspective

  327. and can offer advice like, oh, actually, this.

  328. As a benefit, you can actually use this as a

  329. really cool opportunity. Sure. Or the people

  330. who just have different perspectives to help

  331. you view it from a whole fresh new lens. Ways

  332. that people can just speak to you and the little

  333. everyday things are some of the best. Yeah, yeah,

  334. yeah. I remember growing up a little while ago

  335. in high school, I had a bunch of guinea pigs

  336. that were all running around my room. Okay. But

  337. every morning it was a little routine of like

  338. I would get up, I would listen to the Bible just

  339. as like a daily devotional while I fed the guinea

  340. pigs, get them water, do whatever we need to.

  341. And I'd go down and have breakfast and then talk

  342. with whoever's at the table. Sure, yeah. The

  343. little things, the little ways we can always

  344. build into each other. Yeah, yeah, yeah, for

  345. sure. I love that. I also love that you had guinea

  346. pigs because I have a hamster, but I won't talk

  347. about that because that could take so long. I

  348. also feel like just volunteering with the kids

  349. ministry here at Trinity Streetsville and just...

  350. The amazing work that Megan and Moende and the

  351. volunteers do to kind of talk about Jesus with

  352. children. Like sometimes the children, they're

  353. coming and we don't know, you know, what their

  354. faith relationship is like, what home is kind

  355. of like as well, like what their parents are

  356. saying or doing. Making that environment, like

  357. always bringing the topic back to Jesus, always

  358. bringing the topic back to how much he loves

  359. us and he loves them and he created them to be

  360. beautiful and smart and kind and just doing it

  361. in a way that's understandable and obviously

  362. appropriate for young children as well. Always

  363. bringing it back and then having activities,

  364. too, where it's like you're doing a coloring

  365. page and you're coloring Jesus and someone made

  366. Jesus's hair green. And it's like, OK, well,

  367. but like, you know, you're talking about Jesus

  368. and things are happening. And I think that's

  369. just another way to where I'm just always talking

  370. about him. I was incorporating. Yeah, yeah, yeah,

  371. yeah, for sure. For sure. Yeah. Incorporating,

  372. I guess for me, it's. just personal just making

  373. sure that i'm always trying to pray every day

  374. at some point sometimes it's sometimes it can

  375. be difficult if you're not doing anything you're

  376. not going anywhere you know like like because

  377. it's like easy to do it like if i'm driving the

  378. car or walking somewhere yeah you know but sometimes

  379. it's like making it part of that everyday routine

  380. yeah yeah yeah but i mean sometimes i see it

  381. with just like like randomly i might pray for

  382. somebody that i don't know but like i might feel

  383. like i want to pray for that you know like and

  384. not not with them but for them you know and just

  385. sort of like i i guess i i guess it's sort of

  386. like almost like a guerrilla style faith or something

  387. you know kind of a thing yeah it's just like

  388. in this moment this is what like yeah and so

  389. being like tapped in and like listening for God's

  390. spirit, like directing you. Like you almost feel

  391. compelled to say something or to pray for something,

  392. you know? Yeah. I remember, um, at one point

  393. I was having a conversation with my partner about

  394. like just different families and ways that families

  395. talk and what they talk about and all these things.

  396. Um, and one of the things that she said at one

  397. point was like that she noticed how. easy and

  398. how like natural it seemed in my family um for

  399. faith to just be a lens yeah that we like had

  400. all of our conversations through right and and

  401. just like it just yeah it's so naturally part

  402. of our dialogue and like i i think that that's

  403. a huge blessing for me yeah right that's not

  404. necessarily part of every family's story but

  405. like So like one moment that comes to mind for

  406. me when I think about, you know, everyday moments

  407. and passing on faith was one summer. We were

  408. like on a road trip and I'm sure. So I have three

  409. siblings. So there's four kids and two parents

  410. all stuffed into a van. It's probably super hot

  411. and we've probably been on the road for a while.

  412. And my parents are probably really annoyed with

  413. us. And. My mom just like turns around and she's

  414. like, OK, Josh, my brother, what's your favorite

  415. Bible story? And then he says what his favorite

  416. Bible story is. And she says, OK, now tell us

  417. the story. And then she did that. with each of

  418. us. Right. So we took some time on this road

  419. trip where I'm sure she was just like, stop fighting

  420. with each other. Absolutely. Right. But like,

  421. it was just like, no, let's just chat about Bible

  422. stories as we're driving along to wherever it

  423. was we were going. I don't even really remember.

  424. Right. But like, it was just that moment of being

  425. like, oh yeah, we can just take some time. Yeah.

  426. Be like in, we all, we all chat about all kinds

  427. of really random things every day. And that's

  428. great. But maybe some of those random things

  429. could be, sometimes jesus -y yeah so it's like

  430. i remember in long car rides similar for my family

  431. we're like driving up to fair haven say or going

  432. somewhere longer we would have audiobooks on

  433. but usually the audiobooks that we'd have it'd

  434. be like narnia or the screen tape letters thank

  435. you c .s lewis yes yes but just things that can

  436. challenge you too right they don't always have

  437. to be the sit down philosophical of yes let's

  438. all just think especially if you're dealing with

  439. little kids sure But you can have little questions,

  440. little challenges to engage people no matter

  441. where you are. Yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure. Okay.

  442. And then in Deuteronomy chapter six, verse 12,

  443. it says, be careful that you do not forget the

  444. Lord who brought you out of Egypt, out of the

  445. land of slavery. So God has given them all these

  446. commands. Make sure you do like talk about faith

  447. every day. And then very specifically, don't

  448. forget because God knows that people are often

  449. kind of forgetful. Yes. Yeah. But why, why do

  450. you think it is so easy for us to forget? who

  451. God is and what God does. And like, how do we...

  452. sort of combat that in some way. I think it's

  453. really easy when we get caught up in what we're

  454. doing, what we're actually working on. So whether

  455. it's school, whether it's jobs, whether you're

  456. just actually like an athlete or working on a

  457. specific skill that you're trying to develop,

  458. we often get caught in ignoring the fundamentals

  459. where we came from focusing on, oh, what are

  460. the little things I have to do? Oh, right. I

  461. need to do X, Y, Z to add on to build myself.

  462. Yeah. And we sometimes lose focus of why we were

  463. there in the first place. Sure. Yeah. Yeah. And

  464. I think it's, you know, human beings like we

  465. are floods and has entered the world and so sometimes

  466. i think it's also just like maybe like pride

  467. or just like things but we're just what god has

  468. gifted us so many things and then we just think

  469. okay well i have to work really hard at school

  470. i have to go to work and i have to do this i

  471. have to do this and there's a lot of like eyes

  472. that are happening right and i think just like

  473. as the eyes are happening you forget that like

  474. god is doing this with you right and But I think

  475. it's just kind of that human thing. And so I

  476. think that is why it's so important to be linked

  477. and to be in community because people will remind

  478. you. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I think it's easy for

  479. people to forget because a lot of the times when

  480. people call on God or talk to God or want to

  481. spend time with God, it's in their darkest hours.

  482. Sure. It's when things are going wrong. You know,

  483. it's like I've heard the analogy of. uh of drinking

  484. water right you know are you drinking water just

  485. to stay hydrated or when you're really dehydrated

  486. when you're really thirsty okay i'll go for that

  487. water right you know and of course jesus is a

  488. living water so that all ties together yeah you

  489. know but i you know and it's like i think sometimes

  490. you know like you you look at the story of jove

  491. and he was tested by god and the devil with you

  492. know will you still Praise me, remember me, thank

  493. me, be faithful to me when you have nothing,

  494. when I take everything away. But I think God

  495. and the devil also test us when we have everything.

  496. Sure. Will you remember? Will you still go to

  497. church? Yep. You know, a whole different type

  498. of challenge. Yeah. You know, do you still? is

  499. church still one of the best parts of your week

  500. right do you want to still be involved with your

  501. life group are you still gonna donate that money

  502. you know yeah you you have all this money you

  503. worked hard for it why why do you need to give

  504. things like that you know it's so it's it's a

  505. different type of test sure yep sure and it's

  506. so easy yeah in those good moments to feel like

  507. we are we're comfortable Right. And like I'm

  508. able to take care of myself. And and in the dark

  509. moments, sometimes it's easy to be like, I need

  510. to take care of myself. I need to figure this

  511. out all on my own. Yeah. And so then, yeah, it

  512. just we're just so I think myself especially,

  513. maybe not everybody else. I don't know. But like

  514. I'm like a very. like focused on the now kind

  515. of person. Right. I can think longterm. I might,

  516. my recall is less good. Right. But I'm like,

  517. okay, this is what's happening right now. I need

  518. to like figure it out. I need to like get all

  519. the pieces together. Let's let's just be in the

  520. moment. And, and so then it is hard for me to

  521. say, oh yeah. Okay. Right now this is stressy,

  522. but remember a couple of years ago when there

  523. was also that stressy thing, we like got through

  524. that. Right. Yeah. And like, yeah, just to remember

  525. that God was faithful then and God is faithful

  526. now. Yeah. His consistency. And even when you're

  527. successful, I mean, yes, a big part of it is

  528. your effort and your willingness to learn and

  529. connections and growth and all that. But at the

  530. end of the day, all of this is God's will. Yeah,

  531. for sure. For sure. Yeah. Yeah. So are there

  532. some like. practical sort of tips or ways that

  533. you can think of that like might help us to set

  534. up reminders for ourselves in those moments where

  535. it's easy to forget so i know for me what let's

  536. say a situation happens that's really hard that

  537. i'm really i'm super anxious right i my emotions

  538. will skyrocket. And because of that, I forget

  539. that God is in control, that I can pray, you

  540. know, that really when these things happen, the

  541. first thing I should do is pray and go to God.

  542. But I'm immediately like, oh my gosh, like this

  543. is happening. Like, what do I do? What do I do?

  544. What do I do? And I think it's when those moments

  545. happen, like happen, start setting up the habit

  546. or the pattern of just being like, okay god something

  547. happened and i'm stressed just help me or just

  548. god help me even like and start to kind of train

  549. that within yourself because it's not something

  550. that's going to happen immediately it might take

  551. years for maybe your old emotional habits to

  552. kind of become these new emotional habits um

  553. but yeah just being like even just doing that

  554. like just like as soon as you feel that anxiety

  555. being like god help me and just going to try

  556. to manage whatever's there yeah yeah just like

  557. making sure that that's a routine yeah yeah absolutely

  558. yeah it's like routines for me help a ton just

  559. like if in the mornings what do you do and having

  560. a set routine really can help build those habits

  561. in so when things go off it's a lot easier to

  562. snap back into oh right i remember this yeah

  563. yeah yeah for sure the other thing i find really

  564. helpful especially like throughout my school

  565. like i just have a bunch of little stuffies and

  566. pictures on my wall they're just nearby yeah

  567. which they're just fun cute Sure. But it's really

  568. nice to look at some of them and be like, okay,

  569. there's still something, even if it's just not

  570. animated, but it's still something to remind

  571. me, okay, pause for a second and think. Yeah.

  572. Go back. I like to remember elementary school

  573. or Sunday schools where they had all sorts of

  574. things posted on the walls of like Sunday verses

  575. or pictures like crosses everywhere. But it's

  576. just those little reminders to look and see something

  577. go, ah, visual cue. Take a deep breath. Yep.

  578. pray to God, see what we can do. Yeah. Yeah.

  579. So like I have, um, on my wall in my bedroom,

  580. I have this like collage of pictures of different

  581. moments and people in my lives that are really

  582. important. But then I've written around it, this

  583. verse from Psalms that says, return to your rest.

  584. Oh my soul for the Lord has been good to you.

  585. Right. And just like in those moments where I'm

  586. laying on my bed, having an existential crisis,

  587. right. Just to be like, Oh wait, god was good

  588. and in each of these different moments in my

  589. life god provided me with community god provided

  590. me with beautiful spaces right and so i can turn

  591. to some of those people and be okay um or even

  592. if i'm you know that doesn't feel like the right

  593. thing to do in that moment just remembering god

  594. has always been there god has always provided

  595. i am not doing life on my own exactly right and

  596. it is that yeah just that like Thing on the wall

  597. that's like, this is what's happening right now.

  598. Yeah. I think one advice is, you know, when people

  599. actually try to give you advice or talk to you,

  600. you know, you can listen to it, but you also

  601. got to remember, where is it coming from? Sure.

  602. You know, if it's not coming from a Christian

  603. perspective, if it's not coming from a Bible

  604. believing church going Christian. And maybe it

  605. may not be the right answer. Sure. You know,

  606. it's like we need discernment. But we need discernment

  607. from God. Yeah. We need godly discernment. Sure.

  608. So if somebody is telling you a piece of advice

  609. or you should go do this or you should do that.

  610. Yeah. You know, I feel like it'll have more weight

  611. if it comes from a Christian. Sure. Because we're

  612. always trying to be Christ for it and doing trying

  613. to live our best. life as christians right yeah

  614. and and so therefore like surrounding yourself

  615. with the right people sort of becomes a reminder

  616. in and of itself right i mean often people will

  617. have like they have good intentions or they yep

  618. their heart is in the right place but they're

  619. you know they're they're not they're not followers

  620. of christ so it's like you kind of have to take

  621. it with a bit of grain of salt. Yeah. And sometimes

  622. we might need like just that reminder to be like,

  623. okay, maybe that sounded like advice that could

  624. in this situation be helpful or maybe it isn't,

  625. but then just remembering and going back to God

  626. and being like, wait, what did God say about

  627. this in the Bible? And just being like, I think

  628. even just like surrendering in that moment to

  629. be like, God, I'm just going to do what you.

  630. I love that you have like stuffies and like,

  631. you know, like little quotes and things like

  632. that. I recently got these like little tiny Jesus

  633. figures. I take it off. I don't know if I can

  634. say that. And then I just put him like the little

  635. figure like on my desk so that when I'm really

  636. stressed out at work or anything's happening,

  637. I just see that and I'm like, okay, God help

  638. me. And I just go in and I think it's, For a

  639. lot of people, it's like it doesn't even have

  640. to be like a small little figure. It doesn't

  641. have to be a cross. It doesn't even have to be

  642. close. It could be anything that just between

  643. you and God, you're like, I just need that visual

  644. reminder. And you just kind of keep it with you

  645. or around you so that. if people can't remind

  646. you, at least that can remind you. Yeah. There's

  647. this story in the book of Joshua. So the Israelites

  648. are going into the promised land. They've crossed

  649. over this river and the command from God is on

  650. the other side of this river that you've just

  651. crossed over miraculously. The river has sort

  652. of slowed so that the people could get across

  653. it because usually it was too much water and

  654. stuff. They get to the other side of the river

  655. and God is like, okay, now set up a stone monument

  656. so that when your kids are walking along this

  657. river and they say, what is that stone monument

  658. about? You can say, oh, that was a reminder that

  659. God helped us across this river, that God has

  660. been with us to bring us into this promised land.

  661. Now, I don't know what this stone monument looked

  662. like. It's possibly just a big pile of rocks

  663. because they took some rocks into the river and

  664. made a monument. it might not look like much

  665. to anybody really. But for those people in that

  666. moment, those rocks are a reminder of God's faithfulness.

  667. Right. And so. Visual cue. Yeah. A visual cue,

  668. a tangible cue, you know, like sometimes it's

  669. like, okay, just like go like take a rock, take

  670. a stick, a leaf, like a whatever it is, like

  671. maybe from a special place, from a special like

  672. moment that just is like a thing you can hold

  673. in your hand. To say, this is a reminder that

  674. God is with me. This is a reminder of a time

  675. when I know for real that God is real, that God

  676. is faithful. Yeah. It's a continued reminder

  677. he's always walking with me, too. Yeah, yeah.

  678. Never goes away. I can't get away from this guy.

  679. Yeah, sure. Yeah, yeah. Thank you for a good

  680. thing. Yeah. The world will try to make sure

  681. that you forget that, though. Sure. And that's

  682. why we have to. be reminded yeah we have to be

  683. really intentional about it for sure for sure

  684. um okay so we've talked about uh other people

  685. pouring into us we've talked about ways to sort

  686. of remind ourselves what about pouring our faith

  687. into other people how do we continue that chain

  688. um yeah are there examples that you can think

  689. of of ways that you have been able to pour into

  690. other people and and how that has impacted your

  691. faith I think I get to go back to my time at

  692. camp where it was a first. It was a bunch of

  693. leaders, just everyday leaders who were just

  694. a few years older than me who would pour knowledge

  695. into me. They would talk with me about, hey,

  696. this is what the word of God said. What do you

  697. think about these stories and challenge my beliefs?

  698. After that, I got to do kind of the same thing

  699. to others when I go, hey, maybe it's hanging

  700. out with friends or maybe it's going back to

  701. camp, but hanging out with people younger than

  702. me. Yeah. I would get to parrot some of the same

  703. things like, oh, this is a good challenge. What

  704. do you think? Yeah. And put it back onto them.

  705. But it doesn't have to be like sanctioned times

  706. like, hey, it's Sunday school. We're always going

  707. to come back to this, which is still a good thing.

  708. Sure. But it can happen at any given point. Yeah.

  709. Just walking down the street, have a question.

  710. Oh, I think I have a story that goes with this.

  711. And you can link it back. Sure. But it's through

  712. the little moments that are big. Yeah. Yeah.

  713. For sure. I would say so. Like I mentioned earlier,

  714. my mom and dad, they did not grow up Christian

  715. or in the church. And I am very blessed to have

  716. had that opportunity and to. know jesus um so

  717. i think even just like at home like whenever

  718. um i'm with my mom and dad i'm like i'm just

  719. gonna pray for you guys for your health for something

  720. um i'm just going to like sometimes we'll talk

  721. about like world events or things like that and

  722. then i connect it back to um what jesus said

  723. in the bible about revelation things like that

  724. right um and just being like how in these moments

  725. we have to be kind we have to keep serving each

  726. other um because that is something that jesus

  727. um did in the gospels and so in a way i i hope

  728. that i can pour that out to um my my parents

  729. and i hope that i can um maybe just again like

  730. rob said you you don't know you can't control

  731. the soil but just like planting those seeds um

  732. i think can be really powerful. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

  733. Yeah, at work or with friends, wherever. It's

  734. fun to see. Absolutely, yeah. Yeah, yeah. What

  735. about you, Amav? Like, I find, like, I'm able

  736. to talk a lot more about my faith with my life

  737. group. Sure. Or just doing sermon questions or

  738. so. Yep. And that definitely is a help, for sure.

  739. And then outside of the home, like, Once in a

  740. while, I might say something that relates to

  741. Christianity to my family, but it's still kind

  742. of a dicey thing. Cause I know there's going

  743. to be, I know there's resistance on all sides

  744. and it's sort of like you, you almost have to

  745. have like a numbness to it. Like, you know, that

  746. like, you, you know, that they're not followers,

  747. you know, that they're, they're stuck in their

  748. ways. You know, that there's going to be resistance,

  749. but I mean, Jesus, preached anywhere and everywhere.

  750. You know, it's, you know, it's like, I admire

  751. people that are bold Christians that are unapologetic

  752. Christians. Like, you know, like they'll say,

  753. you know, like, I mean, you look at street preachers,

  754. they'll talk to, they'll talk to, they'll go

  755. into the lion's den and they'll get cut and bruised,

  756. but they'll still go. Sure. You know, I'm not

  757. there yet. And I don't know that that's actually

  758. like, the model for everyone i don't think everyone

  759. is going to get there i don't think everyone

  760. needs to get there right like i think that that

  761. is yeah a way that some people pour in pour their

  762. faith into other people but i think that actually

  763. the most effective way to do it is super relationally

  764. right it's with the people that we see every

  765. day or that we see on a regular basis it's with

  766. um yeah whether it's very explicit, like, okay,

  767. I'm going to pray for you or, Oh, let's have

  768. an actual discussion about the Bible or about

  769. Jesus. Like that's definitely one way to do it.

  770. That works really well for some people, but sometimes

  771. it's just showing up. Sometimes it's just serving

  772. and loving like Jesus loves. Um, and, and doing

  773. those things that plant the seed. Yeah. Right.

  774. And then being willing and ready to water that

  775. seed as it grows. Right. But it starts, it starts

  776. with love. It starts with being authentic and

  777. being honest about who I am and what my faith

  778. is and why that's important. And other people

  779. will see that and they'll take an interest or

  780. not, but that's not, I don't get to control that.

  781. And sometimes you don't have to be what causes

  782. people to turn to Christ. You can be a step to

  783. it. Of course. I mean, I think. I think we all

  784. want that hero moment of, oh, I was the one that

  785. helped, you know, and I was the one that got

  786. them, right, you know? Yeah. But sometimes it's

  787. just, you know, you're a ripple in the pond.

  788. For sure. And you're just, yeah. I'm just there

  789. to help them along the way. Yeah. So I think

  790. it's important, even if there's resistance, it's

  791. always keeping the door open for them. For sure.

  792. Just in case. Yeah. You might say, no, that's

  793. totally fine. Door's here whenever you like it.

  794. Of course. It's ready whenever you are. Yeah.

  795. Which is why Christianity is about spreading

  796. the gospel, not about... converting people or

  797. changing people's hearts. For sure. Yeah. Thank

  798. you so much, folks. I think this has been a really

  799. helpful conversation to think about how faith

  800. is passed on, who pours into us, who we're pouring

  801. into and how to set up those really tangible

  802. reminders of God's faithfulness from generation

  803. to generation to generation. And thank you for

  804. tuning in to this week's episode of Trinity Talks.

  805. I pray that you have people who are pouring into

  806. and developing your faith and that you find ways

  807. to pour into and develop the faith of us. And

  808. we will see you again next week.
