  1. Well, let me begin by thanking you for your very warm welcome and apologizing for my insufficiently exotic accent.

  2. ! I am coming to you from Jackson, Mississippi, but I'm not from Jackson, Mississippi, but isn't it an encouragement? I hope it is

  3. to know that you have brothers and sisters on the other side of the world praying for you this weekend

  4. and trusting in the same Savior and rejoicing in the same good news.

  5. Now, if you would turn with me once more to Titus chapter 2 and to the portion of Scripture that was read just a few moments ago,

    Titus 2 chapter mention

  6. we're going to focus our attention on verses 11 through 14.

  7. Paul has, in the first half of this chapter, exhorted through Titus, or taught Titus how he is to exhort,

  8. the Christians in Crete in a life of godliness, and he addresses different segments of the congregation,

  9. younger men and older men, older women, younger women, slaves, even Titus himself.

  10. And now in this second half of the chapter, Paul points us to the grace of God

  11. by which we are enabled to live a life that is well-pleasing in his sight.

  12. Here's the secret of living in practical Christian obedience, the secret of living God's way.

  13. Paul describes it in five ways, five things he says that grace does.

  14. First, he says grace appears in verse 11.

  15. Then he says grace offers in the second part of verse 11.

  16. Thirdly, grace trains in verse 12.

  17. Fourthly, grace expects.

  18. That's verse 13.

  19. And finally, grace redeems.

  20. In verse 14.

  21. So these are the five things we're going to think about tonight.

  22. Five things that grace does.

  23. This is how grace works in the lives of all who receive it.

  24. Grace appears.

  25. Grace offers.

  26. Grace trains.

  27. Grace expects.

  28. And grace redeems.

  29. Before we look at those five things, would you bow your heads with me again as we ask for God's blessing on his word.

  30. Let us pray.

  31. O Lord, our God, your word is now open before us.

  32. Our hearts are open before your gaze.

  33. We ask for the presence and blessing of the Holy Spirit.

  34. As we read it, as we meditate upon it, granted we may hear a voice behind us in our ears saying,

  35. this is the way, walk in it.

  36. Indeed, may it be that some who are dead in their sin might hear tonight the voice of the Son of Man and live.

  37. Do all this by this portion of your word for the glory of your name.

  38. Amen.

  39. Titus chapter 2 at verse 11.

    Titus 2 chapter mention

  40. This is God's word.

  41. For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people,

  42. training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age,

  43. waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ,

  44. who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness

  45. and to purify for himself a people for his own possession,

  46. who are zealous for good works.

  47. Amen.

  48. Let's look at verse 11 first of all.

  49. And the first thing that grace does.

  50. Grace, Paul says, appears.

  51. Verse 11.

  52. For the grace of God has appeared.

  53. That word appeared is important.

  54. We get our English word epiphany from the Greek word translated here as appeared.

  55. An epiphany is a revelation, a disclosure, an unveiling.

  56. If you have an epiphany, you suddenly come to realize something you had not seen before.

  57. It's used in the New Testament, especially to describe either the first coming of the Lord Jesus Christ

  58. in his incarnation, his virgin birth, his life and death and resurrection,

  59. or with respect to his final return at the end of the age, he will appear again in glory to judge the living and the dead.

  60. Back in 2 Timothy 4, verse 8, Paul spoke about those who love Christ's appearing,

    2 Timothy 4:8

  61. talking about Christians characterized by a longing to see the day when the clouds will part and the trumpet will sound and the Savior will come.

  62. These are his epiphanies, his appearings.

  63. There are two.

  64. His first appearing, his first epiphany, when he was born of the virgin and laid in a manger.

  65. And there is an epiphany still to come when he comes in glory.

  66. And both of those epiphanies are actually here in this passage, aren't they?

  67. The first is the epiphany of grace in verse 11.

  68. And the second we'll come to later on in verse 13 is the epiphany of glory.

  69. The appearing, the epiphany of the grace of God in verse 11 is, of course, talking about Jesus' first coming.

  70. His virgin birth, his earthly life, his ministry, his sufferings.

  71. And the epiphany of glory, verse 13, is our blessed hope, the final advent of our great God and Savior,

  72. the Lord Jesus Christ at the very end of the age.

  73. And so right now, Paul says Christians are living between those two appearings, these two poles,

  74. between his first and his final return.

  75. In what verse 12 calls this present age.

  76. Crucially, the first appearing, the first epiphany, the incarnation, the first coming of Christ is the epiphany of grace.

  77. That means it is grace that characterizes this present age in which we are currently living.

  78. Paul might have said here, the Christ of God appeared.

  79. Or he might have said the Son of God appeared.

  80. But what he actually said is the grace of God has appeared.

  81. In his first coming, it was not the wrath of God that appeared.

  82. It was not the condemnation of heaven that appeared.

  83. It wasn't the final reckoning that appeared.

  84. When Mary was delivered of a baby boy and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in the manger,

  85. it was the grace of God that appeared.

  86. And from that moment on, this present age has been the age of grace.

  87. It's not yet the age of glory.

  88. It will one day be when our Savior comes.

  89. That has not yet appeared.

  90. But this is the age of grace.

  91. The grace of God has appeared.

  92. I wonder if you're sometimes tempted to have the wrong idea about Jesus.

  93. Perhaps you think of him as stern and cold and aloof and distant and uncaring,

  94. standing back from you with arms folded and a frown on his face.

  95. That's not how Paul speaks about him here, is it?

  96. He says, when Jesus came, grace appeared.

  97. Grace embodied in Jesus Christ.

  98. Jesus is all grace.

  99. Grace for sinners.

  100. Grace for strugglers.

  101. Grace for sufferers.

  102. Grace for you.

  103. Grace for you.

  104. Grace appears.

  105. That's the first thing that grace does.

  106. Grace appears.

  107. When Jesus stepped onto the scene, grace came.

  108. And then notice the second thing that grace does.

  109. Grace appears.

  110. Secondly, grace offers.

  111. Look again at verse 11.

  112. The grace of God has appeared,

  113. bringing salvation for all people.

  114. When grace appeared, salvation was brought.

  115. And it is salvation, Paul says, that is for all people.

  116. The grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people.

  117. That means there is no class of human being excluded from the salvation Jesus came to offer.

  118. Oh, but I'm not the kind of person that Jesus would invite to be saved.

  119. Jesus is for other people, not for me.

  120. No, the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people.

  121. This salvation is for you.

  122. But I'm not really all that terribly religious.

  123. I don't have a church background.

  124. I've not read the Bible.

  125. Salvation can't be for me.

  126. What does Paul say?

  127. The grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people.

  128. There is no qualification to that statement.

  129. This salvation is for you.

  130. But you don't know what I've done.

  131. What I've said, how I've lived.

  132. You don't see the twisted thoughts of my heart.

  133. My past is just one long litany of wretched rebellion.

  134. I've been hateful.

  135. I've been selfish.

  136. I've been spiteful.

  137. I've not been faithful.

  138. I've not been pure.

  139. I'm a drunk.

  140. I'm a liar.

  141. There's a long trail of wounded people and broken relationships behind me.

  142. Jesus can't be for me.

  143. I don't fit in around here.

  144. The Word of God does not agree with you.

  145. The grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people.

  146. This salvation that Jesus brings is for you.

  147. Jesus Christ is for you.

  148. You're not too old to come to Jesus.

  149. It's never too late for him.

  150. You're not too young to come to Jesus.

  151. You don't need to wait until you reach some imagined age of discretion before he'll welcome you.

  152. You're not too bad to come to Jesus.

  153. There is no sin, no amount of sin,

  154. that can make him rescind his unconditional offer,

  155. his free invitation to you.

  156. Maybe this is your first time in the church for years.

  157. This text says you are welcome to have Jesus for your Savior just as you are right now here tonight.

  158. Without any other condition or prerequisite being met,

  159. you can have him.

  160. He offers himself to you.

  161. Maybe you've been here every time the doors have been opened for decades.

  162. But you know in your heart you've been living a lie this whole time.

  163. You've been a terrible hypocrite,

  164. praising his name with your lips

  165. while worshipping at the altar of self.

  166. Even now you can come to him.

  167. This salvation is for you.

  168. You'll find him ready and willing tonight

  169. to save you.

  170. Whoever you are,

  171. you need to know you're not a special case.

  172. You are not a special case.

  173. You are not a unique exception to this rule.

  174. The grace of God has appeared,

  175. bringing salvation for all people.

  176. You can point to nothing in your circumstances

  177. that will exempt you from Jesus' invitation.

  178. Nothing that can excuse you

  179. from the response it demands from you.

  180. You cannot disqualify yourself for any reason

  181. from the class of those to whom Jesus makes this offer.

  182. I like the way John Rabbi Duncan,

  183. the great free church missionary to the Jews in Budapest

  184. in the 19th century, once put it.

  185. He said,

  186. the Christian gospel says to us all,

  187. sir, you have no right to go to hell.

  188. You cannot go there

  189. without trampling on the Son of God.

  190. That's part of the message here, isn't it?

  191. Jesus has done everything needful.

  192. Every provision for sinners like me and you

  193. has been made in him

  194. so that anybody, anybody who wishes

  195. may come and have him and be saved.

  196. And so there's no escaping the implications of this, is there?

  197. There's no excuse

  198. that will let you avoid the claims

  199. and the summons of the gospel.

  200. It goes out to all people.

  201. The grace of God has appeared

  202. bringing salvation for all people.

  203. And that means you.

  204. You must answer the summons.

  205. You must accept this offer.

  206. You have no right,

  207. no excuse,

  208. no justification

  209. to validate refusal.

  210. You can point to nothing

  211. about yourself

  212. or your background

  213. or your environment

  214. that will exempt you.

  215. No, the Lord Jesus Christ himself

  216. extends this invitation to you

  217. to come to him

  218. and to be saved.

  219. To refuse, says Rabbi Duncan,

  220. is to go to hell

  221. trampling on the Son of God.

  222. He, Jesus, as it were,

  223. puts himself between you

  224. and the gates of hell.

  225. He's pleading with you

  226. not to go there.

  227. And so if you do

  228. go there in the end,

  229. after hearing his invitation,

  230. you go there willfully.

  231. You go there trampling

  232. on the Son of God

  233. in order to walk

  234. through those dreadful gates.

  235. And if I can say it kindly,

  236. not only is that

  237. the epitome of wickedness,

  238. it's the height of folly

  239. when tonight,

  240. here,

  241. Jesus offers salvation

  242. that he came to bring

  243. for all people.

  244. Why delay?

  245. What reason?

  246. What valid excuse do you have

  247. that you will stand before God

  248. on the last day

  249. and present to him

  250. as your compelling case

  251. for your rejection

  252. of his Son

  253. who shed his blood

  254. that sinners might be saved

  255. and then offers

  256. that salvation to you?

  257. And you said,

  258. not today,

  259. not now,

  260. no thank you.

  261. Grace appears,

  262. grace offers.

  263. Won't you accept

  264. grace?

  265. Grace appears,

  266. grace appears,

  267. grace offers.

  268. Thirdly,

  269. grace trains.

  270. Look at verse 12, please.

  271. grace of God has appeared,

  272. bringing salvation for all people,

  273. training us

  274. to renounce ungodliness

  275. and worldly passions

  276. and to live self-controlled,

  277. upright,

  278. and godly lives

  279. in the present age.

  280. Now,

  281. think about that word,

  282. training.

  283. The Greek word

  284. translated in our English version

  285. as training

  286. means to instruct,

  287. to teach.

  288. our English word

  289. pedagogy

  290. comes from this Greek word.

  291. If you talk about pedagogy,

  292. you're talking about a classroom,

  293. aren't you?

  294. It evokes the picture

  295. of a teacher

  296. standing maybe

  297. at a blackboard,

  298. pupils in their desks

  299. with their textbooks open,

  300. scribbling down notes

  301. as the teacher

  302. imparts knowledge.

  303. That is not at all

  304. the picture

  305. that Paul intends

  306. when he says

  307. that grace teaches,

  308. instructs,

  309. trains us.

  310. It's not just about

  311. the imparting

  312. of knowledge,

  313. information

  314. like a teacher

  315. in a classroom.

  316. No,

  317. when grace comes

  318. into your life

  319. through faith

  320. in the Lord Jesus Christ,

  321. the pedagogy of grace,

  322. the teaching of grace

  323. does much more than that.

  324. No human teacher

  325. can do in us

  326. what grace does

  327. when grace teaches us.

  328. You see,

  329. God's grace

  330. actually forms us.

  331. By his word

  332. and spirit,

  333. Jesus rewires

  334. our appetites,

  335. our desires,

  336. he reprograms

  337. our wills,

  338. he empowers

  339. our resolve

  340. so that we begin

  341. to follow

  342. an entirely new course.

  343. Earlier,

  344. we heard the excuses

  345. of someone

  346. who might argue

  347. that he's too bad,

  348. too twisted,

  349. too hopelessly

  350. locked into sin

  351. to be welcome

  352. to come to Jesus

  353. or be saved.

  354. And I was trying

  355. to press

  356. the wide welcome

  357. of verse 11

  358. upon such a person.

  359. Salvation,

  360. Paul says,

  361. is for all people.

  362. But here,

  363. do you notice,

  364. here's the full extent

  365. of the wonder

  366. of the offer

  367. and invitation

  368. that Jesus

  369. is making to us

  370. when the most

  371. twisted,

  372. sin-enslaved

  373. pagan

  374. comes to Christ

  375. and the grace

  376. of God

  377. that brings salvation

  378. erupts

  379. into their heart.

  380. grace moves in,

  381. as it were,

  382. and begins

  383. a renovation project.

  384. We had a couple

  385. in our church

  386. back in Mississippi

  387. who recently

  388. purchased a new home.

  389. But the situation

  390. is a little unusual

  391. because of their

  392. unique circumstances

  393. of both the buyer

  394. and the seller.

  395. An accommodation

  396. had to be reached.

  397. so that the old

  398. owner

  399. could stay

  400. in the house

  401. for,

  402. I think,

  403. maybe about a month

  404. longer.

  405. Well,

  406. the new owners

  407. actually began

  408. moving all their

  409. possessions in

  410. and started painting

  411. the walls

  412. and renovating

  413. the house.

  414. It was,

  415. I understand,

  416. an entirely chaotic

  417. experience

  418. for everybody involved,

  419. but I think it's

  420. a good description,

  421. actually,

  422. of what is happening

  423. in the heart

  424. of everyone

  425. who accepts

  426. the offer

  427. that grace makes

  428. and comes to

  429. embrace the salvation

  430. Jesus brings.

  431. The old

  432. tenant

  433. of sin

  434. and self

  435. still resides

  436. at this address

  437. in my heart.

  438. but a new

  439. owner

  440. has taken

  441. possession,

  442. the Lord

  443. Jesus Christ,

  444. and he's already

  445. moved in

  446. and has begun

  447. renovations

  448. right away.

  449. You might think

  450. your sin is so bad

  451. you can't come

  452. to Jesus,

  453. but what you need

  454. to understand

  455. is that it is

  456. sinners

  457. that he wants

  458. to come

  459. to him.

  460. It is

  461. not the

  462. healthy

  463. who need

  464. a doctor,

  465. but the sick.

  466. I did not

  467. come to call

  468. the righteous,

  469. but sinners.

  470. You come

  471. to Jesus

  472. with your sin

  473. intact.

  474. You can't

  475. come any

  476. other way.

  477. Try to

  478. clean yourself

  479. up,

  480. you're just

  481. spreading the

  482. muck around.

  483. That's all

  484. you're doing.

  485. No,

  486. you come

  487. to Jesus

  488. guilty,

  489. helpless,

  490. and vile.

  491. He wants

  492. sinners to

  493. come to

  494. him,

  495. and when

  496. they do,

  497. grace moves

  498. in.

  499. He moves

  500. in and

  501. begins a

  502. renovation

  503. project.

  504. His grace

  505. trains us

  506. to renounce

  507. the old

  508. life and

  509. to embrace

  510. a new

  511. life.

  512. Notice how

  513. it does

  514. that.

  515. Look again

  516. at verse

  517. 12.

  518. There's a

  519. negative

  520. turning away

  521. from certain

  522. things,

  523. and a

  524. positive

  525. turning to

  526. certain other

  527. things.

  528. Do you see

  529. that in the

  530. text?

  531. Negatively,

  532. Paul says,

  533. grace trains

  534. us to

  535. renounce

  536. ungodliness

  537. and worldly

  538. desires.

  539. Ungodliness,

  540. there is a

  541. kind of

  542. catch-all

  543. term for

  544. a life that

  545. is oriented

  546. away from

  547. God,

  548. lived in

  549. opposition

  550. to the

  551. will of

  552. God.

  553. Worldly

  554. desires,

  555. on the

  556. other

  557. hand,

  558. speak more

  559. specifically

  560. about the

  561. deep

  562. motivations

  563. of the

  564. heart.

  565. They get

  566. behind an

  567. ungodly

  568. life to

  569. the hard

  570. wiring that

  571. drives it

  572. along.

  573. Ungodliness

  574. is the

  575. whole life.

  576. Worldly

  577. desires are

  578. the roots

  579. of ungodliness

  580. in our

  581. passions,

  582. our lusts,

  583. our longings,

  584. our appetites.

  585. And when

  586. grace comes,

  587. it enables

  588. us to

  589. turn from

  590. that.

  591. Not ever

  592. yet this

  593. side of

  594. eternity,

  595. perfectly,

  596. and yet

  597. really and

  598. truly,

  599. and more

  600. and more

  601. grace helping

  602. us.

  603. We turn

  604. from those

  605. things.

  606. We renounce

  607. them.

  608. That word

  609. renounce,

  610. by the way,

  611. is important

  612. for at

  613. least two

  614. reasons.

  615. First of

  616. all,

  617. it tells

  618. us this

  619. turning away

  620. from sin

  621. is a

  622. conscious,

  623. purposeful

  624. act.

  625. He's not

  626. talking about

  627. some sort

  628. of passive,

  629. automatic

  630. change.

  631. When grace

  632. breaks into

  633. your life,

  634. you will

  635. change.

  636. But that

  637. change takes

  638. place by

  639. God's grace

  640. renewing your

  641. will in

  642. such a way

  643. that you

  644. actively,

  645. deliberately,

  646. turn,

  647. purposefully,

  648. intentionally,

  649. from your

  650. sin.

  651. It's not a

  652. matter of

  653. letting go

  654. and letting

  655. God.

  656. It is a

  657. determined

  658. resolve,

  659. a decision

  660. you make

  661. every day

  662. and again

  663. and again,

  664. day by

  665. day,

  666. to say

  667. no to

  668. all of

  669. that as

  670. the temptation

  671. comes,

  672. as the

  673. old habits

  674. entice,

  675. as the

  676. muscle memory

  677. that led

  678. you down

  679. into paths

  680. of disobedience

  681. kicks back

  682. in.

  683. You say

  684. no purposefully,

  685. decisively,

  686. and you turn

  687. your back

  688. on the

  689. old life.

  690. And this

  691. word renounce

  692. is important

  693. for another

  694. reason.

  695. The original

  696. has a

  697. connotation

  698. of a

  699. public,

  700. open

  701. decision,

  702. an action

  703. we take

  704. with public

  705. consequences.

  706. Not just

  707. a private,

  708. internal,

  709. known-only-to-myself

  710. decision,

  711. but one that

  712. people can

  713. see.

  714. One

  715. lexicon

  716. translates it

  717. as to make

  718. manifest

  719. not to

  720. know.

  721. So to

  722. decide not

  723. to know

  724. that stuff

  725. anymore

  726. in my life,

  727. but not just

  728. to decide

  729. not to know

  730. it,

  731. not to live

  732. in it,

  733. not to embrace

  734. it,

  735. but to make

  736. it manifest,

  737. to make

  738. it clear

  739. to other

  740. people that

  741. I have

  742. made this

  743. decisive

  744. change.

  745. Jesus uses

  746. this word

  747. in Luke

  748. 12 at

  749. verse 9.

  750. He says,

  751. whoever denies

  752. me before

  753. men,

  754. that's our

  755. word,

  756. whoever denies

  757. me,

  758. whoever renounces

  759. me,

  760. whoever makes

  761. manifest that

  762. he does not

  763. know me

  764. before men

  765. will be

  766. denied before

  767. the angels

  768. of God.

  769. There's a

  770. before men-ness,

  771. a public

  772. open,

  773. obvious

  774. component

  775. to turning

  776. from sin

  777. to Christ

  778. and to

  779. new life

  780. in obedience

  781. to him.

  782. How often

  783. have you

  784. made

  785. private

  786. resolutions

  787. in the

  788. quiet of

  789. your own

  790. conscience?

  791. I'm just,

  792. I'm never,

  793. I'm never

  794. going to do

  795. that again.

  796. And those

  797. resolutions

  798. haven't lasted

  799. much longer

  800. than the

  801. end of

  802. the

  803. day,

  804. have they?

  805. But grace,

  806. when it erupts

  807. into our

  808. lives,

  809. brings a

  810. change of

  811. conviction,

  812. a new

  813. trajectory

  814. that can't

  815. be hidden.

  816. It doesn't

  817. just make us

  818. want to do

  819. the right

  820. thing,

  821. it empowers

  822. us so that

  823. we more

  824. and more

  825. do the

  826. right thing

  827. for the

  828. glory and

  829. praise

  830. of God.

  831. God.

  832. And then

  833. notice the

  834. positive things

  835. that grace

  836. produces.

  837. So the

  838. negative

  839. things are

  840. ungodliness

  841. and worldly

  842. desires and

  843. we renounce

  844. them, but

  845. there are

  846. positive

  847. things.

  848. Instead,

  849. we begin,

  850. Paul says,

  851. to live

  852. self-controlled,

  853. upright,

  854. and godly

  855. lives in

  856. the present

  857. age.

  858. Self-control

  859. is a key

  860. word if you

  861. read through

  862. the letter

  863. to Titus,

  864. it comes

  865. up again

  866. and again,

  867. especially in

  868. the first

  869. part of

  870. this chapter

  871. actually.

  872. It's a

  873. characteristic

  874. mark of

  875. a child

  876. of God,

  877. born again

  878. by grace,

  879. growing

  880. self-control.

  881. Martin Lloyd

  882. Jones once

  883. famously said

  884. that so much

  885. of our

  886. trouble comes

  887. from listening

  888. to ourselves

  889. instead of

  890. talking to

  891. ourselves.

  892. That's

  893. involved in

  894. self-control.

  895. Taking

  896. yourself in

  897. hand and

  898. saying,

  899. stop thinking

  900. about that,

  901. stop saying

  902. that that

  903. way,

  904. embrace these

  905. things,

  906. whatever is

  907. good,

  908. whatever is

  909. true,

  910. whatever is

  911. noble,

  912. whatever is

  913. praiseworthy.

  914. Think on

  915. these things.

  916. Why are you

  917. downcast,

  918. O my soul?

  919. You're talking

  920. to yourself.

  921. You're taking

  922. yourself in

  923. hand.

  924. Self-control.

  925. You're not

  926. simply saying

  927. that's just

  928. the way I

  929. am.

  930. I can't

  931. help it.

  932. No,

  933. self-control

  934. is a mark

  935. of a child

  936. of God.

  937. And

  938. grace

  939. produces

  940. uprightness.

  941. It shares

  942. the same

  943. root as

  944. the word

  945. for

  946. righteousness.

  947. It means

  948. a life

  949. of growing

  950. conformity,

  951. alignment

  952. with God's

  953. revealed will

  954. in his

  955. holy word.

  956. You begin

  957. to look

  958. more like

  959. Jesus

  960. in gentleness

  961. !

  962. In

  963. kindness!

  964. In

  965. purity!

  966. In

  967. sacrificial

  968. service

  969. and love.

  970. And

  971. then there's

  972. godliness.

  973. Godliness

  974. is sometimes

  975. translated

  976. piety.

  977. You love

  978. his word.

  979. You love

  980. his praise.

  981. You love

  982. his people.

  983. You hate

  984. what he

  985. hates and

  986. you love

  987. what he

  988. loves and

  989. you want

  990. to be

  991. more like

  992. your

  993. savior and

  994. you want

  995. to be

  996. with his

  997. people and

  998. you delight

  999. to take

  1000. his name

  1001. on your

  1002. lips.

  1003. It's

  1004. what grace

  1005. does in

  1006. our hearts.

  1007. And

  1008. here's the

  1009. thing.

  1010. This is

  1011. what Jesus

  1012. is offering.

  1013. This

  1014. isn't a

  1015. high bar

  1016. and he

  1017. says okay

  1018. here's my

  1019. standard.

  1020. If you

  1021. jump it

  1022. I'll meet

  1023. you on

  1024. the other

  1025. side with

  1026. grace.

  1027. No he

  1028. says this

  1029. is my

  1030. gift to

  1031. you

  1032. sinner.

  1033. Broken

  1034. down

  1035. wretched

  1036. guilty

  1037. ashamed.

  1038. You

  1039. just come

  1040. to me

  1041. and I'll

  1042. begin to

  1043. do this

  1044. in your

  1045. heart.

  1046. Who

  1047. wouldn't

  1048. want it

  1049. to have

  1050. the king

  1051. of kings

  1052. move in

  1053. and make

  1054. the broken

  1055. down

  1056. hovel of

  1057. my heart

  1058. into his

  1059. royal palace

  1060. renovating

  1061. me and

  1062. making me

  1063. new.

  1064. When

  1065. grace trains

  1066. us it's

  1067. not like a

  1068. royal marine

  1069. drill sergeant

  1070. when you

  1071. can't climb

  1072. the wall

  1073. and you

  1074. can't finish

  1075. the race

  1076. and he

  1077. gets in

  1078. your face

  1079. and screams

  1080. no no

  1081. no no

  1082. no fail

  1083. but grace

  1084. doesn't do

  1085. that.

  1086. Grace

  1087. comes

  1088. instead

  1089. and

  1090. puts

  1091. strength

  1092. in your

  1093. weak

  1094. knees

  1095. and

  1096. feeble

  1097. arms

  1098. and

  1099. helps

  1100. you

  1101. put

  1102. one

  1103. foot

  1104. in front

  1105. of the

  1106. other

  1107. in

  1108. the

  1109. long

  1110. hard

  1111. road

  1112. of

  1113. obedience

  1114. to

  1115. your

  1116. savior.

  1117. Grace

  1118. appears

  1119. in person

  1120. as it

  1121. were

  1122. in the

  1123. Lord

  1124. Jesus

  1125. Christ

  1126. when he

  1127. first

  1128. came

  1129. and

  1130. so

  1131. grace

  1132. brings

  1133. salvation

  1134. for all

  1135. people.

  1136. Grace

  1137. offers

  1138. all of

  1139. this

  1140. to you

  1141. and

  1142. when

  1143. you

  1144. embrace

  1145. the

  1146. offer

  1147. grace

  1148. renovates

  1149. changes

  1150. trains

  1151. us

  1152. to

  1153. live

  1154. a

  1155. new

  1156. life.

  1157. And

  1158. fourthly

  1159. grace

  1160. expects

  1161. look at

  1162. verse 13

  1163. please.

  1164. Grace

  1165. appears

  1166. in Christ

  1167. it trains

  1168. everyone

  1169. it saves

  1170. and those

  1171. it trains

  1172. Paul says

  1173. are found

  1174. waiting

  1175. for our

  1176. blessed

  1177. hope

  1178. the

  1179. appearing

  1180. of the

  1181. glory

  1182. of our

  1183. great

  1184. God

  1185. and

  1186. savior

  1187. Jesus

  1188. Christ.

  1189. Here's

  1190. the second

  1191. epiphany

  1192. we talked

  1193. about

  1194. at the

  1195. beginning

  1196. do you

  1197. remember

  1198. the

  1199. first

  1200. epiphany

  1201. was his

  1202. first

  1203. coming

  1204. the

  1205. first

  1206. appearing

  1207. here's

  1208. the

  1209. second

  1210. appearing

  1211. the

  1212. second

  1213. epiphany

  1214. the

  1215. first

  1216. was the

  1217. epiphany

  1218. of grace

  1219. this is

  1220. the

  1221. epiphany

  1222. of glory

  1223. we

  1224. wait

  1225. Paul says

  1226. with eager

  1227. expectation

  1228. for the

  1229. appearing

  1230. of glory

  1231. because we

  1232. live

  1233. in the

  1234. grip

  1235. of

  1236. grace

  1237. Paul calls

  1238. it our

  1239. blessed

  1240. hope

  1241. he doesn't

  1242. mean a

  1243. feeling

  1244. in the

  1245. heart

  1246. of

  1247. hopefulness

  1248. the

  1249. blessed

  1250. hope

  1251. of a

  1252. Christian

  1253. is an

  1254. objective

  1255. thing

  1256. it is

  1257. the

  1258. coming

  1259. of

  1260. Christ

  1261. in

  1262. majesty

  1263. and

  1264. glory

  1265. to

  1266. bring

  1267. his

  1268. work

  1269. to

  1270. final

  1271. completion

  1272. and all

  1273. the

  1274. ransomed

  1275. church

  1276. of God

  1277. will be

  1278. saved

  1279. to

  1280. sing

  1281. forever

  1282. and to

  1283. sin

  1284. no more

  1285. !

  1286. sick

  1287. anymore

  1288. won't

  1289. it

  1290. be

  1291. wonderful

  1292. to

  1293. have

  1294. the

  1295. great

  1296. reunion

  1297. with

  1298. those

  1299. who

  1300. have

  1301. gone

  1302. ahead

  1303. of

  1304. me

  1305. the

  1306. saints

  1307. in

  1308. glory

  1309. who

  1310. are

  1311. waiting

  1312. won't

  1313. it

  1314. be

  1315. wonderful

  1316. when

  1317. the

  1318. grime

  1319. and filth

  1320. and

  1321. pollution

  1322. and

  1323. brokenness

  1324. and

  1325. rebellion

  1326. of a

  1327. lost

  1328. creation

  1329. will be

  1330. made

  1331. new

  1332. and

  1333. there

  1334. will

  1335. be

  1336. a

  1337. new

  1338. heavens

  1339. and

  1340. a

  1341. new

  1342. earth

  1343. that's

  1344. what

  1345. I

  1346. often

  1347. think

  1348. about

  1349. those

  1350. are

  1351. promised

  1352. to

  1353. Christians

  1354. as part

  1355. of our

  1356. blessed

  1357. hope

  1358. but

  1359. they're

  1360. not

  1361. the

  1362. center

  1363. of

  1364. it

  1365. not

  1366. the

  1367. focus

  1368. of

  1369. it

  1370. what

  1371. is

  1372. it

  1373. we're

  1374. waiting

  1375. for

  1376. not

  1377. the

  1378. great

  1379. reunion

  1380. as

  1381. glorious

  1382. as

  1383. it

  1384. will

  1385. be

  1386. not

  1387. the

  1388. final

  1389. end

  1390. of

  1391. sin

  1392. in

  1393. my

  1394. life

  1395. as

  1396. wonderful

  1397. as

  1398. that

  1399. will

  1400. be

  1401. not

  1402. the

  1403. new

  1404. heavens

  1405. and

  1406. the

  1407. new

  1408. earth

  1409. the

  1410. home

  1411. of

  1412. righteousness

  1413. as

  1414. breathtaking

  1415. as

  1416. they

  1417. will

  1418. be

  1419. what

  1420. is

  1421. our

  1422. great

  1423. hope

  1424. it

  1425. is

  1426. the

  1427. appearing

  1428. of

  1429. our

  1430. great

  1431. God

  1432. and

  1433. Savior

  1434. Jesus

  1435. Christ

  1436. whose

  1437. glory

  1438. will

  1439. shine

  1440. with

  1441. dazzling

  1442. majesty

  1443. and

  1444. fuel

  1445. our

  1446. songs

  1447. forever

  1448. don't

  1449. you find

  1450. it easy

  1451. as a

  1452. Christian

  1453. sometimes

  1454. to drop

  1455. your horizons

  1456. down

  1457. and down

  1458. and down

  1459. until

  1460. they're

  1461. focused

  1462. actually

  1463. not

  1464. on

  1465. his

  1466. glorious

  1467. appearing

  1468. but

  1469. almost

  1470. entirely

  1471. on

  1472. yourself

  1473. so

  1474. if

  1475. you're

  1476. like

  1477. me

  1478. from

  1479. time

  1480. to

  1481. time

  1482. you

  1483. do

  1484. some

  1485. personal

  1486. inventory

  1487. you're

  1488. in the

  1489. trenches

  1490. !

  1491. battling

  1492. with your

  1493. sin

  1494. and

  1495. frustrated

  1496. with your

  1497. lack of

  1498. progress

  1499. you

  1500. measure

  1501. your

  1502. Christian

  1503. life

  1504. sometimes

  1505. people

  1506. ask you

  1507. tell me

  1508. about

  1509. your

  1510. soul

  1511. and

  1512. you

  1513. respond

  1514. by

  1515. talking

  1516. about

  1517. your

  1518. quiet

  1519. time

  1520. am

  1521. I

  1522. reading

  1523. my

  1524. bible

  1525. every

  1526. day

  1527. am

  1528. I

  1529. praying

  1530. am

  1531. I

  1532. seeking

  1533. God

  1534. every

  1535. day

  1536. those

  1537. are

  1538. good

  1539. and

  1540. right

  1541. and

  1542. proper

  1543. things

  1544. of course

  1545. they

  1546. are

  1547. but

  1548. Jesus

  1549. is

  1550. nowhere

  1551. in my

  1552. inventory

  1553. list

  1554. I'm

  1555. only

  1556. thinking

  1557. about

  1558. the

  1559. things

  1560. that

  1561. I

  1562. am

  1563. doing

  1564. the

  1565. boxes

  1566. that

  1567. I

  1568. am

  1569. taking

  1570. the

  1571. disciplines

  1572. that

  1573. I've

  1574. cultivated

  1575. where

  1576. is

  1577. Jesus

  1578. my

  1579. eyes

  1580. are

  1581. not

  1582. fixed

  1583. on

  1584. him

  1585. I'm

  1586. engaged

  1587. in

  1588. navel

  1589. gazing

  1590. have

  1591. you

  1592. been

  1593. navel

  1594. gazing

  1595. !

  1596. lately

  1597. this

  1598. text

  1599. is

  1600. their

  1601. eyes

  1602. to

  1603. the

  1604. hills

  1605. where

  1606. does

  1607. my

  1608. help

  1609. come

  1610. from

  1611. my

  1612. safety

  1613. comes

  1614. from

  1615. the

  1616. Lord

  1617. the

  1618. maker

  1619. of

  1620. heaven

  1621. and

  1622. earth

  1623. look

  1624. up

  1625. and

  1626. away

  1627. from

  1628. yourself

  1629. to

  1630. your

  1631. savior

  1632. look

  1633. with

  1634. longing

  1635. expectation

  1636. for

  1637. the

  1638. great

  1639. day

  1640. when

  1641. you

  1642. will

  1643. see

  1644. him

  1645. face

  1646. to

  1647. face

  1648. what

  1649. is

  1650. it

  1651. that

  1652. cousins

  1653. made

  1654. in

  1655. her

  1656. hymn

  1657. that

  1658. the

  1659. sands

  1660. of

  1661. time

  1662. are

  1663. sinking

  1664. putting

  1665. together

  1666. little

  1667. phrases

  1668. from

  1669. Rutherford's

  1670. letters

  1671. the

  1672. bride

  1673. eyes

  1674. not

  1675. her

  1676. garment

  1677. but

  1678. at

  1679. her

  1680. bridegroom's

  1681. face

  1682. I

  1683. will

  1684. not

  1685. gaze

  1686. at

  1687. glory

  1688. but

  1689. at

  1690. my

  1691. savior's

  1692. face

  1693. not

  1694. at

  1695. the

  1696. crown

  1697. he

  1698. giveth

  1699. but

  1700. at

  1701. his

  1702. pierced

  1703. hands

  1704. the

  1705. lamb

  1706. is

  1707. all

  1708. the

  1709. glory

  1710. of

  1711. Emmanuel's

  1712. land

  1713. our

  1714. eyes

  1715. will

  1716. never

  1717. leave

  1718. his

  1719. lovely

  1720. face

  1721. and

  1722. it

  1723. is a

  1724. mark

  1725. of

  1726. a

  1727. child

  1728. of

  1729. God

  1730. even

  1731. here

  1732. in

  1733. this

  1734. veil

  1735. of

  1736. tears

  1737. that

  1738. they

  1739. are

  1740. longing

  1741. to

  1742. see

  1743. him

  1744. waiting

  1745. for

  1746. the

  1747. appearing

  1748. the

  1749. epiphany

  1750. of the

  1751. glory

  1752. of

  1753. our

  1754. great

  1755. God

  1756. and

  1757. savior

  1758. Jesus

  1759. Christ

  1760. if

  1761. you're

  1762. navel

  1763. gazing

  1764. you're

  1765. looking

  1766. in the

  1767. wrong

  1768. direction

  1769. and

  1770. you

  1771. know

  1772. as

  1773. well

  1774. as

  1775. I

  1776. do

  1777. I'm

  1778. sure

  1779. that's

  1780. the

  1781. best

  1782. way

  1783. to

  1784. crash

  1785. I did

  1786. some

  1787. internet

  1788. digging

  1789. when I

  1790. was writing

  1791. this

  1792. sermon

  1793. and found

  1794. that the

  1795. United

  1796. States

  1797. National

  1798. Highway

  1799. Traffic

  1800. Safety

  1801. Administration

  1804. at 55

  1805. miles

  1806. an

  1807. hour

  1808. while

  1809. texting

  1810. for

  1811. five

  1812. seconds

  1813. is

  1814. like

  1815. driving

  1816. the

  1817. length

  1818. of

  1819. an

  1820. American

  1821. football

  1822. field

  1823. with

  1824. your

  1825. eyes

  1826. closed

  1827. as

  1828. a

  1829. consequence

  1830. in

  1831. 2024

  1832. more

  1833. than

  1834. 3,000

  1835. people

  1836. lost

  1837. their

  1838. lives

  1839. because

  1840. of

  1841. distracted

  1842. driving

  1843. they were

  1844. looking

  1845. in the

  1846. wrong

  1847. direction

  1848. this

  1849. text

  1850. is

  1851. saying

  1852. if

  1853. you're

  1854. looking

  1855. at

  1856. yourself

  1857. more

  1858. than

  1859. you're

  1860. looking

  1861. up

  1862. and

  1863. away

  1864. from

  1865. yourself

  1866. to

  1867. Jesus

  1868. who's

  1869. coming

  1870. in

  1871. glory

  1872. is

  1873. our

  1874. great

  1875. and

  1876. blessed

  1877. hope

  1878. you're

  1879. looking

  1880. in

  1881. the

  1882. wrong

  1883. direction

  1884. do

  1885. not

  1886. be

  1887. surprised

  1888. if

  1889. you

  1890. crash

  1891. grace

  1892. appears

  1893. grace

  1894. offers

  1895. grace

  1896. trains

  1897. grace

  1898. expects

  1899. and

  1900. finally

  1901. grace

  1902. redeems

  1903. look at

  1904. verse

  1905. 14

  1906. this

  1907. great

  1908. God

  1909. and

  1910. Savior

  1911. who's

  1912. coming

  1913. we're

  1914. waiting

  1915. for

  1916. is

  1917. the

  1918. one

  1919. who

  1920. gave

  1921. himself

  1922. for

  1923. us

  1924. Paul

  1925. says

  1926. he's

  1927. talking

  1928. about

  1929. the

  1930. cross

  1931. isn't

  1932. he

  1933. there

  1934. at

  1935. the

  1936. cross

  1937. the

  1938. son

  1939. of

  1940. God

  1941. loved

  1942. us

  1943. and

  1944. gave

  1945. himself

  1946. for

  1947. us

  1948. he's

  1949. inviting

  1950. us

  1951. back

  1952. to

  1953. Calvary

  1954. to

  1955. trace

  1956. with

  1957. him

  1958. the

  1959. blessings

  1960. that

  1961. flow

  1962. to us

  1963. from

  1964. Jesus

  1965. blood

  1966. shed

  1967. for

  1968. us

  1969. having

  1970. told

  1971. us

  1972. Jesus

  1973. brings

  1974. salvation

  1975. now

  1976. he

  1977. takes

  1978. us

  1979. to

  1980. its

  1981. very

  1982. source

  1983. the

  1984. spring

  1985. from

  1986. which

  1987. salvation

  1988. flows

  1989. look at

  1990. the text

  1991. first

  1992. Paul

  1993. says

  1994. he gave

  1995. himself

  1996. to

  1997. set

  1998. us

  1999. free

  2000. he

  2001. died

  2002. to

  2003. redeem

  2004. us

  2005. from

  2006. lawlessness

  2007. to

  2008. redeem

  2009. means

  2010. to

  2011. buy

  2012. back

  2013. and

  2014. to

  2015. set

  2016. at

  2017. liberty

  2018. a

  2019. slave

  2020. held

  2021. in

  2022. bondage

  2023. it's

  2024. a

  2025. striking

  2026. phrase

  2027. though

  2028. isn't

  2029. it

  2030. redeem

  2031. us

  2032. from

  2033. lawlessness

  2034. there

  2035. were

  2036. false

  2037. teachers

  2038. on

  2039. the

  2040. island

  2041. of

  2042. Crete

  2043. Judaizers

  2044. legalists

  2045. and

  2046. they

  2047. were

  2048. worried

  2049. that

  2050. Paul's

  2051. gospel

  2052. of

  2053. free

  2054. grace

  2055. led

  2056. to

  2057. lawlessness

  2058. they

  2059. thought

  2060. they

  2061. were

  2062. the

  2063. obedience

  2064. guys

  2065. and

  2066. Paul

  2067. was

  2068. the

  2069. one

  2070. all

  2071. this

  2072. grace

  2073. talk

  2074. is

  2075. dangerous

  2076. it's

  2077. going

  2078. to

  2079. undermine

  2080. obedience

  2081. but

  2082. Paul

  2083. says

  2084. here

  2085. when

  2086. grace

  2087. really

  2088. comes

  2089. when

  2090. salvation

  2091. erupts

  2092. into

  2093. your

  2094. heart

  2095. flowing

  2096. from

  2097. the

  2098. cross

  2099. of

  2100. your

  2101. dear

  2102. savior

  2103. comes

  2104. freedom

  2105. from

  2106. lawlessness

  2107. sometimes

  2108. we think

  2109. actually

  2110. lawlessness

  2111. is

  2112. freedom

  2113. don't

  2114. we

  2115. to

  2116. live

  2117. however

  2118. we

  2119. please

  2120. unconstrained

  2121. !

  2122. by

  2123. God's

  2124. law

  2125. but

  2126. maybe

  2127. you're

  2128. here

  2129. tonight

  2130. and

  2131. you've

  2132. learned

  2133. by

  2134. bitter

  2135. experience

  2136. that

  2137. living

  2138. life

  2139. on

  2140. your

  2141. own

  2142. terms

  2143. a

  2144. lawless

  2145. life

  2146. is

  2147. actually

  2148. a

  2149. life

  2150. of

  2151. slavery

  2152. and

  2153. bondage

  2154. empty

  2155. and

  2156. hollow

  2157. and

  2158. now

  2159. perhaps

  2160. at

  2161. last

  2162. you're

  2163. ready

  2164. for

  2165. freedom

  2166. free

  2167. indeed

  2168. having

  2169. been

  2170. redeemed

  2171. set

  2172. free

  2173. by the

  2174. Lord

  2175. Jesus

  2176. Christ

  2177. he

  2178. gave

  2179. himself

  2180. to

  2181. set

  2182. us

  2183. free
