  1. Do please take your Bibles in hand once again and turn back to Leviticus 16.

  2. ! If you ever read through the book of Leviticus, you'll know Leviticus 16 is right at the very

  3. ! The first half of the book, chapters 1 through 15, deal with sacrifices and priesthood and

  4. ritual purity in Old Testament Israel. They're all about how God's people then were to draw near to

  5. God. Then the second half of the book, chapters 17 through 26, focus mostly on how God's people were

  6. to live in light of having come near to him in holiness and obedience to him. They're about being

  7. devoted to God. So the first half is about drawing near to God. The second half of the book is about

  8. being devoted to God. And right at the very center, the hinge of the whole book is Leviticus chapter 16,

    Leviticus 16 chapter mention

  9. the day of atonement, the holiest day in the Hebrew calendar, Yom Kippur, the day of atonement.

  10. It is the supreme example of atoning sacrifice, how sin was dealt with for God's people. So if you want

  11. to understand the Christian gospel, if you want to understand the meaning of the cross of our Savior,

  12. the Lord Jesus Christ, you actually need to understand the day of atonement. This is in the background.

  13. This gives us, if you like, something of a key to unlock the significance of what was happening that

  14. day at Calvary. Leviticus 16 is the climax of the book of Leviticus. It is actually the literary heart

  15. of the whole of the Mosaic law. And it's not just about drawing near to God, but really about how God

  16. draws near to us. How God reconciles sinners to himself by means of the Lamb of God,

  17. the Lord Jesus Christ. As we look at it together, we're going to consider four things.

  18. First, I want us to think about the peril we must face, the danger, the peril we must face. We can't

  19. deal with everything, all the details in this chapter, but to try and see the big picture, first,

  20. the peril we must face. That's in verses 1 and 2, and again in verses 12 and 13. The presence of the

  21. holy God is a fearful reality, the peril we must face, the danger we're in. And then secondly,

  22. I want us to think about the priest that we really need. The peril we must face, and then the priest

  23. that we need in verses 3 through 5, and especially in 11 through 14. The high priest, we read, is

  24. alone permitted to perform this holy ceremony in the holy place. And yet, the details of the ceremony

  25. all underscore and highlight the inadequacy of this man, the high priest, to really secure atonement for

  26. anyone, not for himself, not for Israel. We need a better high priest, one who has no sin of his own,

  27. the Lord Jesus Christ, the peril we must face, the priest that we so badly need. Thirdly,

  28. I want us to think about the provision that we are given. We'll look at the sacrifices themselves.

  29. These two goats, one that is slaughtered and the other that's sent out into the wilderness,

  30. together comprising a single sacrifice. And we'll think about their significance, how

  31. in the symbolism of these two goats, full, complete, perfect atonement for our sin is provided

  32. in the one to whom they point us, the Lamb of God, the Lord Jesus Christ. And then finally,

  33. the penitence we must embrace in verses 29 and 31. We have to repent and believe the gospel in order

  34. to receive the atoning blessing that Christ has secured for us by his offering of himself at the cross.

  35. So those are the four things I want us to think about as we approach this chapter together. The peril we

  36. must face, the priest that we need, the provision that we are given, and the penitence we must embrace.

  37. Before we look at the chapter together and think about those four themes, let's bow our heads

  38. and ask for the Lord's help and blessing. Let us all pray.

  39. Lord our God, we are like those Greeks who came to the disciples saying,

  40. Sir, we would see Jesus. He is the one that we so badly need today.

  41. And so as we hear your word expounded, we ask that you would give us eyes to see him, ears to hear him,

  42. hearts receptive to his voice. Speak, O Lord, for your servants are listening.

  43. For we ask it in Jesus' matchless name. Amen.

  44. We won't read the whole chapter together, but do keep Leviticus 16 open before you and think with me,

  45. first of all, about the peril we must face. Verses 1 and 2, you'll notice, connect the Day of Atonement

  46. back to an earlier chapter, back to chapter 10.

  47. And it reminds us, these instructions were given on the same day that Aaron, the high priest's two older sons,

  48. Nadab and Abihu, died. You might remember what happened to them.

  49. Back in chapter 10, they were consumed by fire from the presence of the Lord.

  50. Because they sauntered carelessly into the holy place with their newfangled fire,

  51. confident that God was really going to be impressed by their latest improvements on his sacrificial system.

  52. They thought they could come up with something better than what had been given to them.

  53. And so they entered the holy place with their own agenda, their own plan, their own approach to the worship of God.

  54. It did not go well.

  55. And God struck them down in a moment of terrible, solemn judgment.

  56. And so now, God tells Aaron, through Moses, that he is, look at the text,

  57. he is not to come at any time into the holy place inside the veil before the mercy seat that is on the ark,

  58. so that he may not die.

  59. For I will appear in the cloud over the mercy seat.

  60. And later, if you look at verse 12, God gives instructions on how Aaron may come into the holy place when he does come,

  61. on this one day every year, the Day of Atonement.

  62. And he says that Aaron must take a censer full of coals of fire from the altar before the Lord,

  63. two handfuls of sweet incense beaten small.

  64. He shall bring it inside the veil and put the incense on the fire before the Lord,

  65. that the cloud of incense may cover the mercy seat that is over the testimony,

  66. listen, so that he does not die.

  67. There is a very real threat of death

  68. hanging over this whole scenario,

  69. this whole ritual that Aaron was to perform.

  70. His two sons have been struck down already,

  71. and now he himself is to go in to this incredibly dangerous venue

  72. where the presence of the fire of the glory of God blazes.

  73. Did you know that before the war in Ukraine,

  74. you could actually take tourist trips

  75. into the radioactive exclusion zone around the city of Chernobyl?

  76. I don't know if that sounds like an exciting vacation to you.

  77. It doesn't entirely appeal to me.

  78. The nuclear power plant in Ukraine, remember,

  79. that melted down 1986?

  80. It's not exactly my ideal day trip,

  81. but there's no accounting for some people's taste, I suppose.

  82. And if you take the tour, the tourist trip to Chernobyl,

  83. as you might expect, there's a long list of rules

  84. telling tourists about safety protocols for their visit.

  85. They're forbidden to eat anything while they're in the zone.

  86. They may not set any personal items on the ground

  87. while they're in the zone.

  88. Nothing can be taken away with them from the zone.

  89. And particularly important,

  90. visitors may not stray from the safe paths

  91. that have been laid out for them

  92. while they're in the nuclear exclusion zone,

  93. the radioactive exclusion zone.

  94. Leviticus 16, 1 and 2 reminds us

  95. that Nadab and Abihu,

  96. they strayed from the safe paths

  97. as they walked carelessly

  98. into the white-hot presence of divine holiness.

  99. And it destroyed them.

  100. Sin, you see,

  101. excludes people,

  102. excludes all people

  103. from the presence of God,

  104. excludes me,

  105. excludes you

  106. from the presence of God.

  107. He is holy

  108. and we are not.

  109. That's our fundamental problem, isn't it?

  110. We are shut out of the presence of God,

  111. liable to divine judgment.

  112. So even this amazing chapter

  113. where God is making provision

  114. for his people's sin,

  115. there's this refrain,

  116. that you may not die.

  117. The wages of sin

  118. is what?

  119. The wages of sin is death.

  120. God is holy.

  121. Our God is a consuming fire.

  122. Hebrews 10, 26 and following warns us,

  123. if we go on sinning deliberately

  124. after receiving the knowledge of the truth,

  125. there no longer remains

  126. a sacrifice for sins,

  127. but a fearful expectation of judgment

  128. and a fury of fire

  129. that will consume the adversaries.

  130. Anyone who has set aside

  131. the law of Moses

  132. dies without mercy

  133. on the evidence

  134. of two or three witnesses.

  135. How much worse judgment do you think

  136. will be deserved

  137. by the one who has trampled

  138. underfoot the Son of God

  139. and has profaned the blood

  140. of the covenant

  141. by which he was sanctified

  142. and has outraged

  143. the Spirit of grace?

  144. The same threat

  145. continues to obtain

  146. in the New Testament age

  147. and the days in which we live.

  148. The threat of the judgment of God,

  149. his perfect holiness,

  150. is burning against our sin.

  151. God is not safe for us

  152. in ourselves

  153. by our own nature.

  154. Perhaps you've heard the gospel

  155. countless times in your years

  156. and you know

  157. there is a safe path,

  158. a safe way

  159. into the presence of God.

  160. Only by the sacrificial blood

  161. of the covenant

  162. that is by the blood

  163. of Jesus Christ

  164. can you come into

  165. the presence of God.

  166. But if you refuse him,

  167. resist him,

  168. reject him

  169. in favor of your own

  170. better ideas

  171. like Nadab and Abihu did,

  172. if you take your own path.

  173. Hebrews says,

  174. all that remains

  175. is a fearful expectation

  176. of judgment

  177. and a fury of fire

  178. that will consume

  179. the adversaries.

  180. Nadab and Abihu

  181. are case studies

  182. in divine judgment

  183. showing us

  184. the urgency

  185. of our situation.

  186. your sin,

  187. my sin

  188. will kill us

  189. in the end.

  190. Forever.

  191. Destroy us

  192. in the end.

  193. We must

  194. draw near to God.

  195. We must be

  196. reconciled

  197. to God

  198. and yet we cannot

  199. do so safely

  200. by any means

  201. we can contrive

  202. or invent

  203. for ourselves.

  204. There's only

  205. one safe path

  206. into the holy place.

  207. Only one way

  208. to deal

  209. with our sin

  210. and guilt

  211. in the sight of God.

  212. And showing us

  213. the safe path,

  214. opening the safe path

  215. for you and me

  216. into the presence

  217. of God

  218. is the purpose

  219. of Leviticus 16.

  220. So what is

  221. the safe path?

  222. How can you

  223. and I,

  224. how can we

  225. draw near to God

  226. with full assurance

  227. of faith?

  228. Confident

  229. that he will

  230. welcome us,

  231. not destroy us

  232. or condemn us.

  233. Well,

  234. think with me now

  235. in the second place

  236. about the priest

  237. that we need.

  238. The peril

  239. we must face,

  240. our sin exposes us

  241. to danger,

  242. to the judgment

  243. of God.

  244. Your sin

  245. exposes you

  246. to the judgment

  247. of God.

  248. It is an emergency.

  249. How will you

  250. deal with it?

  251. Is there a safe way

  252. to stand before him?

  253. We need

  254. a perfect high priest

  255. who can deal

  256. with our sin.

  257. Look at verses

  258. three through five

  259. with me please.

  260. God describes

  261. how Aaron

  262. should approach him.

  263. Look at the procedure,

  264. verses three through five.

  265. He is to gather

  266. a bull

  267. for a sin offering

  268. and a ram

  269. for a burnt offering

  270. for himself

  271. and his family.

  272. In verse five,

  273. he is also to bring

  274. two goats

  275. and a ram.

  276. The goats

  277. are for a sin offering.

  278. The ram

  279. is for a burnt offering

  280. to be made

  281. on behalf

  282. of the congregation

  283. of Israel.

  284. But before he can

  285. offer these sacrifices,

  286. you will notice

  287. in verse four,

  288. he is not allowed

  289. to wear the usual

  290. vestments

  291. of the high priest.

  292. There is an ephod,

  293. this sort of

  294. breastplate

  295. that he wears

  296. and a golden sash.

  297. And all the finery

  298. of this

  299. high priestly uniform.

  300. He would have been

  301. an imposing,

  302. striking figure

  303. decked out

  304. in this glorious regalia

  305. and yet at this moment

  306. they are all forbidden

  307. to him.

  308. On this day instead,

  309. you will notice

  310. in verse four,

  311. he is to wear

  312. plain,

  313. unadorned linen.

  314. He must bathe

  315. and dress

  316. in this simple costume.

  317. There is no display

  318. of personal glory

  319. as he goes

  320. into the holy place.

  321. No pomp,

  322. no show,

  323. none of the insignia

  324. and prestige

  325. or privilege

  326. of the high priest

  327. as he steps

  328. behind the veil

  329. into the presence

  330. of the glory of God.

  331. Verse 17

  332. tells us,

  333. all the other priests

  334. and the Levites

  335. that would ordinarily

  336. have made

  337. the tabernacle

  338. a busy place,

  339. they were all absent

  340. on this day.

  341. On every other day,

  342. the high priest

  343. would have gone

  344. all over the tabernacle,

  345. although behind this

  346. one great curtain,

  347. he never ever

  348. dared to venture.

  349. But now,

  350. on this day,

  351. the day of atonement,

  352. all alone,

  353. this one man,

  354. stripped of all his finery,

  355. approaches the veil.

  356. On it,

  357. there are embroidered

  358. images of cherubim,

  359. these angelic guardians.

  360. We meet them first

  361. at the entrance

  362. to the Garden of Eden.

  363. You remember

  364. when Adam and Eve

  365. were expelled

  366. because of sin,

  367. they were placed there

  368. to guard the way back

  369. and to bar

  370. the gates of paradise

  371. to our first fathers.

  372. Behind this veil,

  373. the Shekinah glory shines.

  374. The majesty of God

  375. blazes in holy splendor

  376. above the mercy seat,

  377. this golden platform

  378. placed on top

  379. of the Ark of the Covenant.

  380. No other human being

  381. is ever authorized

  382. to venture into this room,

  383. into the most holy place.

  384. But on this day,

  385. the high priest

  386. can draw back the curtain

  387. and step inside.

  388. And as he does,

  389. he is a symbolic

  390. second Adam.

  391. Here are the cherubim

  392. blocking the way

  393. into the presence of God.

  394. Adam the first

  395. was prohibited

  396. from going back there.

  397. But here is a picture

  398. of Adam the second

  399. entering anew

  400. into the presence of God,

  401. passing the cherubim

  402. into the place

  403. where God dwells.

  404. And he's dressed

  405. not as a lofty dignitary

  406. to impress,

  407. to impress,

  408. but as a simple supplicant

  409. in plain linen,

  410. a mere man,

  411. one of us.

  412. And he's not to go

  413. empty-handed.

  414. Notice in verse 11,

  415. he is to kill the bull

  416. as a sin offering.

  417. This is important now,

  418. to make atonement

  419. for himself

  420. and his house.

  421. And then in verse 14,

  422. along with the incense

  423. that he is to burn,

  424. he is to take

  425. some of the blood

  426. of the bull

  427. and sprinkle it

  428. on the front

  429. of the mercy seat

  430. on the east side

  431. seven times.

  432. The east side

  433. of the mercy seat

  434. is the direction

  435. of the altar

  436. and the entrance

  437. to the tabernacle.

  438. The east, remember,

  439. was the direction

  440. toward which Adam

  441. was banished

  442. when he was excluded

  443. from the garden

  444. and fell into sin.

  445. He was sent east of Eden.

  446. And so that is the direction

  447. that atonement is made

  448. for this symbolic

  449. second Adam.

  450. Seven times he is to do it.

  451. Seven is a number

  452. of completeness

  453. in the Bible.

  454. So the picture is

  455. of a complete,

  456. perfect,

  457. full atonement

  458. with no lack.

  459. Full pardon

  460. that God has provided

  461. for him.

  462. But there's one more

  463. vital point to understand

  464. about this extraordinary moment.

  465. Aaron and every high priest

  466. that would follow him

  467. could never secure

  468. forgiveness for his people

  469. because the simple reason

  470. is they were sinners themselves.

  471. It's like they're trying

  472. to pay off a debt

  473. all the time,

  474. accumulating interest

  475. on that debt themselves.

  476. Never able to pay off

  477. the penalty.

  478. Hebrews chapter 9

    Hebrews 9 chapter mention

  479. actually offers

  480. the best commentary

  481. on this whole scene.

  482. In Hebrews 9 verse 9

    Hebrews 9:9

  483. we're told

  484. the high priest's work

  485. quote,

  486. cannot perfect

  487. the conscience

  488. of the worshiper.

  489. But when Christ appeared

  490. as a high priest

  491. of the good things

  492. that have come,

  493. then through the greater

  494. more perfect tent

  495. not made with hands,

  496. that is not of this creation

  497. he entered once for all

  498. into the holy places,

  499. not by means of the blood

  500. of goats and calves,

  501. but by means of his own blood

  502. thus securing

  503. an eternal redemption.

  504. For if the blood

  505. of goats and bulls

  506. and the sprinkling

  507. of defiled persons

  508. with the ashes

  509. of a heifer

  510. sanctify for the purification

  511. of the flesh,

  512. how much more

  513. will the blood

  514. of Christ

  515. through the eternal spirit,

  516. who through the eternal spirit

  517. offered himself

  518. without blemish to God

  519. purify our consciences

  520. from dead works

  521. to serve the living God.

  522. Here's the point.

  523. The high priest

  524. is only a picture

  525. and an incomplete picture

  526. because he's a sinner

  527. of another Adam to come

  528. who would go

  529. and reconcile sinners to God,

  530. who would go into

  531. the holy place

  532. without fear

  533. and tear the curtain

  534. from top to bottom

  535. opening the way

  536. for everyone

  537. who trusts in him

  538. to enter with confidence

  539. into the most holy place

  540. to obtain mercy

  541. and find grace to help

  542. in our time of need.

  543. But this high priest,

  544. this high priest,

  545. was flawed.

  546. He was a sinner

  547. just like us.

  548. You might know

  549. the Snoopy cartoons,

  550. Charles Schultz,

  551. Peanuts cartoons.

  552. Snoopy,

  553. it turns out

  554. that the dog Snoopy

  555. is a writer.

  556. He's an author.

  557. And in one of the panels,

  558. Snoopy's sitting

  559. on top of his kennel

  560. with a typewriter

  561. writing his latest novel.

  562. And he's thinking

  563. about his lead character.

  564. And he begins,

  565. All his life,

  566. he tried to be a good person.

  567. And then he's pounding furiously

  568. on his typewriter.

  569. And the second panel says,

  570. Many times, however,

  571. he failed.

  572. For after all,

  573. he was only human.

  574. And then the final panel,

  575. in a flash of inspiration,

  576. Snoopy explains

  577. his character's

  578. persistent failures.

  579. Here's why

  580. his every effort

  581. fell short.

  582. He wasn't a dog.

  583. All his life,

  584. he tried to be a good person.

  585. Many times, however,

  586. he failed.

  587. After all,

  588. he was only human.

  589. He wasn't a dog,

  590. like Snoopy.

  591. If he'd read

  592. Leviticus 16,

  593. in light of the coming

  594. of the Lord Jesus Christ,

  595. Snoopy might have said,

  596. of the high priest,

  597. he played the part

  598. of the second Adam

  599. many times.

  600. But every time

  601. he failed.

  602. For after all,

  603. he was only a sinner.

  604. He wasn't Jesus.

  605. This whole drama,

  606. this little,

  607. this little enacted parable,

  608. is a picture to us

  609. of a better high priest

  610. that we so badly need,

  611. who opens the way,

  612. who had no sin

  613. of his own,

  614. who was holy,

  615. harmless,

  616. undefiled,

  617. and separate from sinners,

  618. who with his own blood

  619. can make full

  620. perfect atonement

  621. for sinners,

  622. so that you and I

  623. can go on safe paths

  624. into the presence

  625. of the blazing glory

  626. of God,

  627. and hear him call us

  628. his dear children,

  629. and speak to him

  630. as Abba Father.

  631. Israel needed,

  632. we need,

  633. you and me

  634. right now today,

  635. we need

  636. a high priest,

  637. doesn't deal

  638. in the blood

  639. of bulls

  640. and goats

  641. in an earthly

  642. tabernacle

  643. made with human hands.

  644. We need the real thing,

  645. don't we?

  646. Not the picture,

  647. not the shadow,

  648. not the play.

  649. We need the reality,

  650. we need the Lord Jesus Christ,

  651. our great high priest

  652. over the house of God,

  653. who with his own blood

  654. has made satisfaction

  655. once and for all.

  656. He humbled himself,

  657. do you remember,

  658. like the high priest here,

  659. stripped himself

  660. of all his finery,

  661. not in his priestly robes

  662. with the ephod

  663. and the gold,

  664. but in simple,

  665. plain linen,

  666. the Lord Jesus.

  667. Philippians 2.6

  668. reminds us,

  669. though he was in the form,

  670. God did not count equality

  671. with God,

  672. a thing to be grasped,

  673. but he emptied himself,

  674. taking the form

  675. of a servant,

  676. a doulos,

  677. a slave,

  678. being born in the likeness

  679. of men

  680. and being found

  681. in human form,

  682. he humbled himself,

  683. by becoming obedient

  684. to the point of death,

  685. even death on a cross.

  686. Here's the high priest

  687. that we need,

  688. that you need,

  689. available to you today.

  690. One who opens the way,

  691. who reconciles you to God

  692. once and for all,

  693. who makes a safe path

  694. for you

  695. into his holy presence.

  696. There is no other way

  697. that is safe.

  698. Your sin exposes you

  699. to a terrible liability

  700. of judgment.

  701. But Jesus

  702. is the safe path.

  703. Jesus

  704. opens the way.

  705. The peril we face,

  706. the priest we need.

  707. Thirdly,

  708. the provision

  709. that we are given.

  710. In verses 5-10,

  711. Aaron is to take

  712. the two male goats

  713. for a sin offering

  714. and one ram

  715. for a burnt offering

  716. for the sake of the people.

  717. Notice the two goats together

  718. are constituted

  719. a single sacrifice,

  720. a special kind

  721. of sin offering.

  722. And look at what Aaron

  723. has to do with them.

  724. They're presented

  725. before the Lord

  726. and lots are cast.

  727. Chosen in this way,

  728. one of the goats

  729. was to be killed

  730. and its blood

  731. sprinkled on the mercy seat

  732. to atone for sin.

  733. And the other goat,

  734. notice in verse 8

  735. and in verse 10,

  736. is for Azazel.

  737. Now,

  738. there's a lot of debate

  739. over what this word

  740. Azazel might mean.

  741. Is it,

  742. as some suggest,

  743. a proper noun,

  744. a name

  745. set in parallel

  746. to the Lord?

  747. So you have one goat

  748. for the Lord

  749. and one goat

  750. for Azazel,

  751. perhaps.

  752. Some suggest

  753. this is a reference

  754. to the devil.

  755. I don't think

  756. that's right.

  757. Other scholars

  758. suggest Azazel

  759. as a place

  760. somewhere out

  761. in the wilderness

  762. to which this goat

  763. was dispatched.

  764. But in my judgment,

  765. the best interpretation

  766. is still

  767. the historic interpretation.

  768. It uses an expression,

  769. if you've got

  770. an old King James Bible,

  771. I think you'll find it there.

  772. It was first coined

  773. by William Tyndale

  774. in his English Bible

  775. in 1535

  776. when he translated

  777. Leviticus 16.

  778. The word Azazel

  779. is interpreted

  780. not as a name

  781. for a demonic being

  782. or even a place,

  783. but it's a compound word

  784. meaning a goat

  785. for sending away.

  786. Literally,

  787. as Tyndale put it

  788. famously,

  789. a scapegoat.

  790. That's what this goat is.

  791. Literally, isn't it?

  792. It's a scapegoat.

  793. All the sins

  794. of the people

  795. were confessed

  796. and as the priest

  797. laid his hands

  798. on its head,

  799. symbolically,

  800. those sins

  801. were transferred,

  802. imputed,

  803. to the goat

  804. and the goat

  805. was sent out

  806. into the wilderness

  807. to carry them away

  808. forever.

  809. A scapegoat,

  810. a goat for sending away.

  811. Now look at verses

  812. 20 through 22.

  813. Aaron is to lay

  814. his hands

  815. on the head

  816. of both goats

  817. and in verse 21.

  818. He is to confess

  819. over it

  820. all the iniquities

  821. of the people

  822. of Israel,

  823. all their transgressions

  824. and all their sins.

  825. He shall put them

  826. on the head

  827. of the goat

  828. and send it away

  829. into the wilderness

  830. by the hand

  831. of a man

  832. who is in readiness.

  833. The goat

  834. shall bear

  835. all their iniquities

  836. on itself

  837. to a remote area

  838. and he shall let

  839. the goat go free

  840. in the wilderness.

  841. Do you get the symbolism

  842. of that now?

  843. It's really simple

  844. and crystal clear.

  845. What a great vivid picture

  846. it is

  847. of what God does

  848. through Jesus

  849. when he deals

  850. with our sin.

  851. The goat doesn't

  852. really deal with our sin

  853. but the one

  854. to whom it points,

  855. the Lord Jesus,

  856. really does

  857. what this symbol

  858. teaches us.

  859. He carries

  860. our sins

  861. away.

  862. He carries

  863. them away.

  864. These two goats

  865. actually

  866. together

  867. provide a complete

  868. picture of what

  869. happens at the cross.

  870. The first goat

  871. is slaughtered

  872. and its blood

  873. is sprinkled.

  874. This is a picture

  875. of what the New Testament

  876. calls propitiation.

  877. 1 John 2.22

  878. He himself

  879. is the propitiation

  880. for our sins

  881. and not for ours only

  882. but for the whole world.

  883. Propitiation

  884. means a sacrifice

  885. that satisfies

  886. the white

  887. hot fury

  888. of the judgment

  889. of God

  890. that burns

  891. against our sin.

  892. This sacrifice

  893. satisfies it

  894. completely

  895. and forever.

  896. Propitiation,

  897. the blood of Jesus

  898. propitiates

  899. the wrath

  900. of God

  901. so that if you

  902. are a Christian

  903. today

  904. trusting in Christ

  905. God's

  906. wrath

  907. never again

  908. will burn

  909. against you.

  910. He is always

  911. a father.

  912. you may displease

  913. him,

  914. he may discipline

  915. you

  916. but he is

  917. never anything

  918. other than

  919. Abba

  920. father

  921. toward you

  922. because of the

  923. Lord Jesus Christ.

  924. Wrath

  925. has been

  926. satisfied,

  927. paid

  928. in full.

  929. It is

  930. finished

  931. once

  932. and forever.

  933. In my place

  934. bearing shame

  935. and scoffing rude

  936. in my place

  937. condemned

  938. he stood

  939. sealed

  940. my

  941. pardon

  942. with his

  943. blood.

  944. Hallelujah

  945. what a savior

  946. that's propitiation

  947. that's the first goat.

  948. The second goat

  949. the goat that's

  950. sent away

  951. is expiation

  952. carrying

  953. sin

  954. and guilt

  955. away

  956. so that if you

  957. are a Christian

  958. today

  959. trusting in the

  960. Lord Jesus

  961. Christ

  962. God the

  963. Father

  964. looks upon

  965. you

  966. and sees

  967. you robed

  968. in the

  969. righteousness

  970. of his

  971. son.

  972. Your sins

  973. have been

  974. carried away

  975. by him

  976. forever out

  977. of sight.

  978. He shall

  979. throw our

  980. iniquities

  981. into the

  982. depths of

  983. the sea

  984. and he

  985. shall

  986. remember

  987. them

  988. no more.

  989. Expiation

  990. and together

  991. they describe

  992. all that

  993. Jesus

  994. accomplished

  995. for us

  996. at the

  997. cross.

  998. Isn't

  999. it

  1000. wonderful?

  1001. You may

  1002. know your

  1003. sin so

  1004. very

  1005. intimately

  1006. and profoundly

  1007. and feel

  1008. the dreadful

  1009. weight of

  1010. them.

  1011. The shame

  1012. and sting

  1013. of them

  1014. in your

  1015. conscience.

  1016. Some of

  1017. you

  1018. have such

  1019. a vivid

  1020. appreciation

  1021. for your

  1022. remaining

  1023. guilt

  1024. that it

  1025. leads you

  1026. regularly

  1027. as you

  1028. look at

  1029. your own

  1030. heart

  1031. to wonder

  1032. if you're

  1033. really

  1034. converted.

  1035. How can

  1036. I still

  1037. live like

  1038. this,

  1039. speak like

  1040. this,

  1041. think like

  1042. this?

  1043. Look at

  1044. me.

  1045. How can

  1046. I possibly

  1047. be a

  1048. Christian?

  1049. What's

  1050. the remedy?

  1051. McShane

  1052. told us

  1053. the remedy.

  1054. Do you

  1055. remember what

  1056. he said?

  1057. For every

  1058. one look

  1059. at self,

  1060. take ten

  1061. looks at

  1062. Christ.

  1063. Full,

  1064. full atonement.

  1065. Full

  1066. pardon.

  1067. Your sin

  1068. carried away

  1069. out of

  1070. sight.

  1071. Forgiven

  1072. and forgotten

  1073. before the

  1074. bar of

  1075. heaven's

  1076. justice.

  1077. Wrath

  1078. satisfied

  1079. so that

  1080. there is

  1081. no longer

  1082. any fury

  1083. of judgment

  1084. waiting for

  1085. you.

  1086. Look to

  1087. Christ,

  1088. not at

  1089. yourself.

  1090. Look at

  1091. your

  1092. Savior.

  1093. Lift

  1094. your head

  1095. from your

  1096. own wicked

  1097. heart to

  1098. your perfect

  1099. sinless

  1100. Redeemer.

  1101. Hide in

  1102. him.

  1103. He is

  1104. the remedy

  1105. for all

  1106. your fears.

  1107. Again,

  1108. 1 John.

  1109. If anyone

  1110. says he has

  1111. no sin,

  1112. he lies

  1113. and the

  1114. truth is

  1115. not in

  1116. him.

  1117. But if

  1118. we confess

  1119. our sin,

  1120. he is

  1121. faithful and

  1122. just to

  1123. forgive us

  1124. our sins

  1125. and cleanse

  1126. us from

  1127. all

  1128. unrighteousness.

  1129. Clean,

  1130. clean by

  1131. the blood

  1132. of the

  1133. Lamb.

  1134. Clean

  1135. forever.

  1136. Clean

  1137. conscience,

  1138. clean hands,

  1139. clean hearts,

  1140. a clean

  1141. life because

  1142. of the

  1143. work of

  1144. Jesus

  1145. Christ.

  1146. Well,

  1147. how do you

  1148. get a hold

  1149. of this

  1150. for yourself?

  1151. How do you

  1152. make it

  1153. yours if

  1154. it's not

  1155. yours already?

  1156. How can

  1157. this

  1158. cleansing

  1159. work of

  1160. the true

  1161. perfect

  1162. high priest,

  1163. the great

  1164. second

  1165. Adam,

  1166. the Lord

  1167. Jesus

  1168. Christ,

  1169. be yours?

  1170. Look at

  1171. verses 29

  1172. through 34.

  1173. We learn

  1174. there about

  1175. the date

  1176. on which

  1177. the Day

  1178. of Atonement

  1179. was to be

  1180. commemorated,

  1181. the tenth

  1182. day of the

  1183. seventh month.

  1184. we learn

  1185. that it

  1186. was to be

  1187. celebrated

  1188. by every

  1189. successive

  1190. high priest

  1191. in Aaron's

  1192. line.

  1193. We learn

  1194. that the

  1195. day was

  1196. to be

  1197. observed

  1198. by Israel

  1199. as a

  1200. special

  1201. Sabbath

  1202. day,

  1203. a day

  1204. of rest.

  1205. And in

  1206. verse 29

  1207. and again

  1208. in verse

  1209. 31,

  1210. Israel is

  1211. told on

  1212. this day

  1213. when it

  1214. rolls around

  1215. every year

  1216. they are

  1217. noticed

  1218. to

  1219. afflict

  1220. themselves.

  1221. that is

  1222. to say

  1223. not that

  1224. they are

  1225. literally

  1226. to beat

  1227. themselves

  1228. but they

  1229. are to

  1230. mourn

  1231. over their

  1232. sin.

  1233. This was

  1234. never to

  1235. be a

  1236. cold

  1237. perfunctory

  1238. external

  1239. ritual.

  1240. It was

  1241. to point

  1242. them to

  1243. one who

  1244. was to

  1245. come.

  1246. Who by

  1247. his blood

  1248. and righteousness

  1249. would do

  1250. forever what

  1251. the high

  1252. priest and

  1253. the blood

  1254. of goats

  1255. and bulls

  1256. never could.

  1257. The Lord

  1258. Jesus Christ.

  1259. And they

  1260. were to

  1261. receive the

  1262. benefit of

  1263. his atoning

  1264. work in

  1265. the same

  1266. way we

  1267. still receive

  1268. that benefit.

  1269. They looking

  1270. forward,

  1271. we now

  1272. looking back.

  1273. How do

  1274. you get

  1275. a hold

  1276. of the

  1277. forgiveness

  1278. of your

  1279. sin?

  1280. You repent

  1281. and believe

  1282. the gospel.

  1283. You afflict

  1284. yourself.

  1285. You stop

  1286. your self

  1287. confidence,

  1288. your self

  1289. reliance.

  1290. you stop

  1291. your avoidance

  1292. and your

  1293. blame

  1294. shifting.

  1295. You stop

  1296. passing the

  1297. buck.

  1298. You stop

  1299. accusing

  1300. others.

  1301. You stop

  1302. excusing

  1303. yourself.

  1304. You own

  1305. your sin.

  1306. And before

  1307. God you

  1308. cry out

  1309. like the

  1310. leper at

  1311. the side

  1312. of the

  1313. road when

  1314. Jesus was

  1315. passing by,

  1316. Son of

  1317. David,

  1318. have mercy

  1319. on me.

  1320. everyone

  1321. who ever

  1322. cried to

  1323. him like

  1324. that

  1325. received the

  1326. mercy

  1327. they need.

  1328. Afflict

  1329. your hearts,

  1330. rend your

  1331. hearts and

  1332. not your

  1333. garments.

  1334. Turn

  1335. back to

  1336. the Lord.

  1337. Turn

  1338. back,

  1339. turn

  1340. back.

  1341. Why will

  1342. you die,

  1343. O house

  1344. of Israel?

  1345. Full atonement

  1346. has been

  1347. made.

  1348. Jesus has

  1349. died and

  1350. risen and

  1351. reigns a

  1352. perfect high

  1353. priest for

  1354. you, opening

  1355. a safe way

  1356. into the

  1357. presence of

  1358. God.

  1359. Come and

  1360. rest on

  1361. him.

  1362. He has

  1363. done all

  1364. things needful.

  1365. He is all

  1366. your heart

  1367. could ever

  1368. need.

  1369. Trust in

  1370. him.

  1371. Turn from

  1372. your sin

  1373. and yourself

  1374. to your

  1375. savior and

  1376. he will

  1377. give you

  1378. entrance into

  1379. the holy of

  1380. holies.

  1381. That you

  1382. may come

  1383. all the

  1384. way in

  1385. to the

  1386. throne room

  1387. itself and

  1388. speak to

  1389. the one who

  1390. reigns there

  1391. and call

  1392. him father.

  1393. You will

  1394. have his

  1395. heart,

  1396. you will

  1397. have his

  1398. ear,

  1399. you may

  1400. call on

  1401. him and

  1402. he will

  1403. shower upon

  1404. you his

  1405. mercy and

  1406. his grace.

  1407. Not the

  1408. fire of

  1409. divine fury,

  1410. but the

  1411. bright sunshine

  1412. shine of

  1413. the smile

  1414. of God's

  1415. forgiveness

  1416. for everyone

  1417. who trusts

  1418. in Jesus

  1419. Christ.

  1420. May the

  1421. Lord give

  1422. us all

  1423. grace as

  1424. we turn

  1425. our attention

  1426. now to

  1427. his table

  1428. where the

  1429. great emblems

  1430. of his

  1431. self-giving

  1432. love are

  1433. provided for

  1434. us.

  1435. May the

  1436. Lord give

  1437. us grace

  1438. to look to

  1439. him and

  1440. rest upon

  1441. him.

  1442. Let us

  1443. pray.

  1444. Amen.

  1445. Lord Jesus,

  1446. our great

  1447. and perfect

  1448. high priest,

  1449. we bow

  1450. before you

  1451. and we

  1452. pour out

  1453. our wonder

  1454. and awe

  1455. that we

  1456. are reconciled

  1457. to God

  1458. not as a

  1459. formal

  1460. transaction,

  1461. not as a

  1462. form of

  1463. words,

  1464. it's not a

  1465. sort of

  1466. spiritual

  1467. bookkeeping

  1468. measure

  1469. transferring

  1470. from one

  1471. column to

  1472. the other.

  1473. It came

  1474. instead at

  1475. your great

  1476. cost.

  1477. You

  1478. entered

  1479. the heavenly

  1480. holy place

  1481. not with the

  1482. blood of

  1483. bulls and

  1484. goats but

  1485. with your

  1486. own blood

  1487. there to

  1490. perfect

  1491. satisfaction

  1492. for sin

  1493. for all

  1494. time.

  1495. it came

  1496. at your

  1497. death

  1498. that we

  1499. might

  1500. live

  1501. and so

  1502. as we

  1503. bow

  1504. before you

  1505. preparing

  1506. our

  1507. hearts

  1508. to

  1509. commune

  1510. with you

  1511. at your

  1512. table

  1513. we cry

  1514. out

  2897. come

  2898. to

  2899. this

  2900. table

  2901. not

  2902. that

  2903. we

  2904. are

  2905. good

  2906. not

  2907. that

  2908. we

  2909. are

  2910. right

  2911. not

  2912. that

  2913. we

  2914. are

  2915. better

  2916. than

  2917. others

  2918. but

  2919. bankrupt

  2920. and

  2921. broken

  2922. we

  2923. come

  2924. robed

  2925. in

  2926. the

  2927. righteousness

  2928. of

  2929. another

  2930. hidden

  2931. beneath

  2932. the

  2933. blood

  2934. and

  2935. obedience

  2936. of

  2937. Jesus

  2938. and

  2939. so

  2940. we

  2941. ask

  2942. you

  2943. as

  2944. we

  2945. take

  2946. the

  2947. bread

  2948. and

  2949. drink

  2950. the

  2951. cup

  2952. that

  2953. we

  2954. may

  2955. feast

  2956. by

  2957. faith

  2958. on

  2959. him

  2960. our

  2961. risen

  2962. saviour

  2963. who

  2964. said

  2965. my

  2966. flesh

  2967. is

  2968. true

  2969. food

  2970. my

  2971. blood

  2972. true

  2973. drink

  2974. help

  2975. us

  2976. to

  2977. drink

  2978. him

  2979. in

  2980. sustain

  2981. us

  2982. by

  2983. him

  2984. and

  2985. then

  2986. send

  2987. us

  2988. out

  2989. to

  2990. live

  2991. for

  2992. his

  2993. honour

  2994. and

  2995. glory

  2996. and we

  2997. pray for

  2998. all those

  2999. in this

  3000. room

  3001. who are

  3002. not at

  3003. this

  3004. table

  3005. oh lord

  3006. have

  3007. mercy

  3008. upon

  3009. them

  3010. awaken

  3011. in

  3012. them

  3013. a

  3014. longing

  3015. not

  3016. for

  3017. bread

  3018. and

  3019. wine

  3020. but

  3021. for

  3022. the

  3023. one

  3024. to

  3025. whom

  3026. they

  3027. point

  3028. us

  3029. awaken

  3030. in

  3031. them

  3032. a

  3033. longing

  3034. for

  3035. the

  3036. saviour

  3037. enable

  3038. them

  3039. to

  3040. trust

  3041. him

  3042. repent

  3043. and

  3044. believe

  3045. in

  3046. him

  3047. and

  3048. so

  3049. when

  3050. next

  3051. this

  3052. fellowship

  3053. gathers

  3054. at the

  3055. family

  3056. dinner

  3057. table

  3058. here

  3059. at the

  3060. table

  3061. of the

  3062. Lord

  3063. Jesus

  3064. they

  3065. might

  3066. join

  3067. us

  3068. as

  3069. brothers

  3070. and

  3071. sisters

  3072. reconciled

  3073. to

  3074. God

  3075. and

  3076. reconciled

  3077. to

  3078. us

  3079. so

  3080. hear our

  3081. cries

  3082. we pray

  3083. oh God

  3084. for the

  3085. honour

  3086. and glory

  3087. of your

  3088. great name

  3089. for we

  3090. ask it

  3091. in

  3092. Jesus

  3093. holy

  3094. name

  3095. amen

  3096. on the

  3097. night

  3098. in which

  3099. he was

  3100. betrayed

  3101. the

  3102. Lord

  3103. Jesus

  3104. took

  3105. bread

  3106. and

  3107. when

  3108. he

  3109. had

  3110. broken

  3111. it

  3112. he

  3113. said

  3114. this

  3115. is

  3116. my

  3117. body

  3118. which

  3119. is

  3120. for

  3121. you

  3122. do

  3123. this

  3124. in

  3125. remembrance

  3126. of

  3127. me

  3128. and

  3129. in

  3130. the

  3131. same

  3132. manner

  3133. after

  3134. supper

  3135. he

  3136. also

  3137. took

  3138. !

  3139. saying

  3140. this

  3141. cup

  3142. is

  3143. the

  3144. new

  3145. covenant

  3146. in

  3147. my

  3148. blood

  3149. do

  3150. this

  3151. as

  3152. often

  3153. as

  3154. you

  3155. drink

  3156. it

  3157. in

  3158. remembrance

  3159. of

  3160. me

  3161. for

  3162. as

  3163. often

  3164. as

  3165. you

  3166. eat

  3167. this

  3168. bread

  3169. and

  3170. drink

  3171. this

  3172. cup

  3173. you

  3174. proclaim

  3175. the

  3176. Lord's

  3177. death

  3178. until

  3179. the

  3180. come

  3181. now

  3182. take

  3183. your

  3184. psalters

  3185. in

  3186. hands

  3187. and turn

  3188. to

  3189. Psalm

  3190. 72

  3191. in

  3192. the

  3193. Scottish

  3194. Psalter

  3195. page

  3196. 314

  3197. Psalm

  3198. 72

  3199. singing

  3200. verses

  3201. 17

  3202. through

  3203. 19

  3204. and we

  3205. stand

  3206. to

  3207. sing

  3208. to God's

  3209. praise

  3210. and glory

  3211. His name

  3212. forever

  3213. shall

  3214. endure

  3215. last

  3216. like

  3217. the

  3218. sun

  3219. it

  3220. shall

  3221. !

  3222. men

  3223. shall

  3224. be

  3225. blessed

  3226. in

  3227. heaven

  3228. blessed

  3229. all

  3230. nations

  3231. shall

  3232. call

  3233. call

  3234. now

  3235. blessed

  3236. be

  3237. the

  3238. Lord

  3239. our

  3240. God

  3241. the

  3242. Lord

  3243. of

  3249. may

  3250. may

3251. The whole earth let His glory fill

3252. Amen, so let it be

3253. And now may the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ

3254. and the love of God our Father

3255. and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit
