  1. Well, I'd like us to turn back together to John chapter 6, and we can read again at verse 35.

    John 6 chapter mention

  2. Jesus said to them,

  3. I am the bread of life.

  4. Whoever comes to me shall not hunger,

  5. and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

  6. As we said when we were picking up this reading,

  7. this discussion that Jesus has with the crowds comes immediately after two of his most famous miracles.

  8. The first part of John 6, you read about the feeding of the 5,000.

  9. That's followed by Jesus walking on the water.

  10. And these miracles, along with all of the other miracles recorded in the Gospels,

  11. are testifying to the identity of Jesus,

  12. helping us to see more of just who he is,

  13. that he's no ordinary person,

  14. and instead that in him,

  15. everything that God has promised in the Old Testament is being fulfilled.

  16. And the people around Jesus are starting to realize this more and more and more.

  17. As the disciples witness these miracles,

  18. they are one,

  19. on the one hand, they're amazed at what they see,

  20. and on the other hand,

  21. they're shaken,

  22. recognizing that this man that they are following is like no other.

  23. And so the identity of Jesus is being revealed more and more in the miracles that are recorded in John's Gospel.

  24. But alongside the miracles recorded by John,

  25. we also have some key statements of Jesus that tell us more about his identity.

  26. And chapter 6 onwards introduces seven great statements that are recorded in this Gospel.

  27. These are known as the I Am Sayings,

  28. and this is the first of them.

  29. I am the bread of life.

  30. Later, Jesus declares,

  31. I am the light of the world.

  32. I am the door.

  33. I am the good shepherd.

  34. I am the resurrection and the life.

  35. I am the way, the truth, and the life.

  36. And I am the true vine.

  37. These great statements are helping us to see who Jesus is.

  38. They're helping us to see what he's come to do.

  39. And they're all drawing us to put our faith in him.

  40. And I want us tonight to look at the first of these,

  41. the great statement that Jesus makes in verse 35,

  42. I am the bread of life.

  43. And that's a very, very rich statement.

  44. And this whole passage is bursting with amazing theology.

  45. But it's also a passage that resonates with us

  46. because it's using a very everyday object.

  47. And it resonates a lot with me because I absolutely love bread.

  48. And I don't know if you're like me.

  49. I don't know if you ever go to a nice restaurant

  50. and they come with a basket of bread.

  51. There's all these lovely rolls.

  52. I would just take that for my dinner

  53. and forget everything else

  54. and just eat all the bread for my meal.

  55. The passage, in a way, is a bit like that.

  56. It's a whole meal for us to chew on,

  57. to think about, and to learn from together.

  58. But sometimes passages like this,

  59. and John's Gospel is perhaps a very clear example of this,

  60. sometimes that can make it hard.

  61. Because when you read through a passage like this,

  62. you see the dialogue between Jesus and the crowds.

  63. You see all the different things that are being said.

  64. You see the allusions to the Old Testament.

  65. And sometimes we can get lost.

  66. And sometimes we can be tied in knots.

  67. Passages like this are both wonderful and challenging.

  68. Wonderful because there's so much to take in.

  69. But also challenging.

  70. Because it's hard to take it all in.

  71. And I don't know about you,

  72. but I know that certainly for me,

  73. many times I've come to passages like John 6,

  74. recognizing that these are amazing words,

  75. but also struggling to think,

  76. I can't quite follow everything that's being said.

  77. I am not taking all of this in.

  78. I hope that we can untie some of these knots

  79. a little bit together tonight.

  80. And when we find ourselves in that situation,

  81. one of the best things that we can do

  82. is just to try and keep things as simple as possible.

  83. And this is something that we must remember

  84. with the great I am statements that Jesus has made.

  85. These are some of the richest theological statements

  86. that you find in the whole Bible.

  87. But they're also simple and clear statements.

  88. And Jesus is using simple everyday language

  89. to help us understand more about him.

  90. And so first and foremost,

  91. as we come to this great statement in John 6, 35,

  92. Jesus is telling us that if we want to understand

  93. more about who he is,

  94. then we need to think about bread.

  95. Bread is something that we need every day.

  96. And that was particularly through the New Testament times.

  97. It was just a basic staple diet

  98. for people's day-to-day survival.

  99. In other words, bread, food,

  100. it's just talking about the daily nutrition

  101. that we need every day in order to stay alive.

  102. Bread is also something that we have access to.

  103. So bread is not the food of the elite.

  104. It's not the fancy, rare, specialist food

  105. that you only get in certain places

  106. or only certain times of year

  107. or only if you've got loads of money.

  108. It's not fancy.

  109. It's not rare.

  110. And unless something is majorly wrong

  111. in a particular part of the world,

  112. bread is available.

  113. Bread is also something that,

  114. to benefit from,

  115. we actually have to eat it.

  116. So bread is not nourishing us

  117. if it's sitting in our cupboard.

  118. It's not giving us what we need

  119. unless we take it and receive it.

  120. And if we refuse bread,

  121. then we are being unwise

  122. and we're being unhealthy.

  123. And bread is satisfying.

  124. It takes away our hunger.

  125. It gives us energy and nourishment.

  126. And a good, fresh loaf

  127. that's just come out of the oven

  128. is actually one of the nicest things you can eat.

  129. It's so good and so satisfying.

  130. All of these things are true of bread.

  131. All of these things are true of Jesus.

  132. And that's what I want us to see tonight.

  133. We're going to go through these four things together.

  134. The bread of life is needed.

  135. The bread of life is available.

  136. The bread of life has got to be received.

  137. The bread of life is so satisfying.

  138. So first of all, the bread of life is needed.

  139. The whole discussion in this passage begins

  140. with Jesus challenging the crowd

  141. in terms of their motivation

  142. for following him across the Sea of Galilee

  143. back to Capernaum.

  144. You see that in verse 26 and 27.

  145. He says,

  146. These are the people who've seen an amazing miracle.

  147. They've been well fed

  148. and they're thinking,

  149. This guy's amazing.

  150. Let's follow him.

  151. And let's just keep getting

  152. the provision that he can make for us.

  153. Jesus responds to that

  154. by majorly raising the stakes.

  155. And he's saying to them,

  156. Look, the thing that matters

  157. is not your next meal.

  158. The thing that matters

  159. is eternal life.

  160. Jesus is making them and us

  161. stop and think about eternity.

  162. About what matters more than anything else.

  163. And that prompts the crowd

  164. in verse 28 and 29 to say,

  165. What do we do?

  166. What should we do?

  167. What must we do

  168. to be doing the works of God?

  169. And Jesus responds with the wonderful words,

  170. This is the work of God

  171. that you believe in him

  172. whom he has sent.

  173. But the crowd are getting a bit sceptical

  174. and uncertain

  175. and they respond with the question

  176. that actually every one of us wants to ask.

  177. In verse 30, they say,

  178. Well, how do we know

  179. that you're the one we should believe?

  180. Verse 30,

  181. They say to him,

  182. Then what sign do you do

  183. that we may see and believe you?

  184. What work do you perform?

  185. In other words,

  186. they're saying the question

  187. that everybody says

  188. that when we're confronted

  189. with the reality of who Jesus is

  190. and the claims that the gospel makes,

  191. we're like,

  192. Well, how do we know?

  193. How are you going to prove yourself to us

  194. that you are the one

  195. that we should trust?

  196. And because they're still thinking about food

  197. and about bread in the conversation,

  198. they look back to the Old Testament

  199. to the moment when God provided manna

  200. for the Israelites in the wilderness.

  201. Of course, this is referring back

  202. to Exodus chapter 16

    Exodus 16 chapter mention

  203. when God's people had been taken out of Egypt.

  204. They were wandering in the wilderness

  205. and they were very quickly confronted

  206. by the fact that they had no food

  207. and they realized that they were going to starve.

  208. And God made a miraculous provision for them

  209. that every morning when they woke up,

  210. there was a bread-like substance

  211. lying on the ground

  212. that they were able to gather

  213. and to eat for sustenance

  214. and nourishment.

  215. And that provision was made by God

  216. every day

  217. until they went into the promised land.

  218. And so they're saying,

  219. well, look, that's what Moses did.

  220. What are you going to do?

  221. As though Jesus needs to prove himself.

  222. Jesus responds to this

  223. by giving them and us a crucial lesson

  224. in terms of how to understand

  225. the relationship between the Old Testament

  226. and the New Testament.

  227. Jesus points out

  228. that everything in the Old Testament,

  229. including the manna,

  230. is just a shadow

  231. of the full provision

  232. that God is going to make.

  233. And it's really important

  234. to remember that

  235. when you look at anything

  236. in the Old Testament,

  237. whatever you see in the Old Testament

  238. is highlighting two things.

  239. It's pointing to a reality

  240. and it's revealing an inadequacy.

  241. So something in the Old Testament,

  242. it will point to a reality

  243. and it will reveal an inadequacy.

  244. So manna points to the reality

  245. that we are completely dependent on God

  246. to provide what we need for our survival.

  247. But it also highlights an inadequacy

  248. that the manna only lasted for 24 hours

  249. and then you needed more

  250. and then you needed more

  251. and then you needed more.

  252. And actually, as Jesus goes on to say,

  253. the people who ate manna still died.

  254. So it didn't actually keep them alive forever.

  255. It was never fully adequate

  256. and it was never meant to be.

  257. Because everything in the Old Testament

  258. points to a reality

  259. and reveals an inadequacy

  260. because the fullness of God's provision

  261. never comes in the Old Testament.

  262. It only comes in the new

  263. through the coming of the Lord Jesus.

  264. And that's what Jesus is revealing.

  265. He did the same thing with the temple.

  266. You see that earlier on

  267. in John's Gospel in chapter 2.

  268. The temple was this magnificent building

  269. highlighting a reality

  270. that we need access to God

  271. and we need atonement for our sins.

  272. But at the same time,

  273. the Old Testament temple

  274. was also revealing an inadequacy.

  275. It was never enough

  276. because it had been destroyed.

  277. They were in the process of rebuilding it

  278. and not long after,

  279. these days, only 40 years later,

  280. the temple would be destroyed again

  281. because it was never meant to be the answer.

  282. Instead, it was a sign,

  283. a shadow pointing

  284. towards the fullness of God's plan

  285. being revealed

  286. in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  287. And so here you have the Jews

  288. talking about manna,

  289. talking about one of the most important miracles

  290. in the history of the Jews

  291. when God provided for a nation

  292. who otherwise were going to starve to death.

  293. And yet Jesus is telling them

  294. that that massive miracle

  295. is just a shadow.

  296. And as we said,

  297. that's highlighted later in the chapter,

  298. 48 to 50, 58.

  299. It says they ate the manna,

  300. but they still died.

  301. That provision did not stop

  302. their ancestors' death.

  303. It was never meant to.

  304. It was just a shadow.

  305. The true bread is Jesus.

  306. But there's a crucial difference

  307. and a massive difference

  308. that he does not come

  309. to provide sustenance

  310. so that you can survive

  311. for another day

  312. like the manna did.

  313. Jesus comes

  314. to give eternal life

  315. so that you can live forever.

  316. The Old Testament was never enough.

  317. It was never meant to be.

  318. It was only and always

  319. a shadow

  320. of the Savior

  321. that they really needed.

  322. Alongside that, though,

  323. all of this

  324. is telling us

  325. that Jesus,

  326. the bread of life,

  327. has come

  328. for a particular type of person.

  329. He's come

  330. for the hungry

  331. and the needy.

  332. And that's emphasized

  333. so much,

  334. so clearly

  335. in verse 35.

  336. Whoever comes to me

  337. will never hunger.

  338. Whoever believes in me

  339. will never thirst.

  340. The miracle of the manna

  341. in the Exodus

  342. came in the context

  343. of imminent starvation

  344. for the people.

  345. And in the miracle

  346. of the feeding of the 5,000

  347. earlier in this chapter,

  348. it perhaps wasn't

  349. as urgent a situation

  350. as it was

  351. in the Exodus,

  352. but still,

  353. the people needed food.

  354. They were far from home.

  355. They were starving

  356. and they needed

  357. bread

  358. to survive.

  359. We need food

  360. if we are going to live.

  361. And the point

  362. that Jesus is making

  363. is that when it comes

  364. to eternal life,

  365. we desperately need

  366. the bread

  367. that will give us

  368. life.

  369. We desperately

  370. need

  371. him.

  372. And that tells you

  373. something so

  374. incredibly important

  375. about the gospel.

  376. It's telling you

  377. that the gospel

  378. is not

  379. for the people

  380. who've got it all.

  381. And it's not

  382. reserved

  383. for the spiritually

  384. elite

  385. because there's

  386. actually no such thing.

  387. The gospel

  388. is for those

  389. who desperately

  390. need it.

  391. In other words,

  392. the gospel

  393. is for the starving.

  394. Jesus

  395. has come

  396. for the hungry.

  397. And this is so

  398. important to recognize

  399. because

  400. no matter what stage

  401. you are in your

  402. journey of faith,

  403. whether you are a believer

  404. or whether you're not yet

  405. a believer,

  406. for many people,

  407. and maybe this is true

  408. of you,

  409. that in terms of your faith,

  410. all you can see

  411. is what you lack.

  412. And so you look at yourself

  413. and you think,

  414. I don't know enough.

  415. I don't feel

  416. good enough

  417. or settled enough

  418. in myself.

  419. I've

  420. made a ton

  421. of mistakes

  422. in my life.

  423. I'm struggling

  424. with doubts.

  425. I've got questions

  426. that I still feel

  427. unsettled by

  428. and unsure of.

  429. I know

  430. that I have left

  431. Jesus to one side

  432. in my life

  433. for too long.

  434. I know

  435. that I was maybe

  436. in a better place

  437. in the past

  438. and I'm not there.

  439. Today,

  440. I don't think

  441. that I pray enough.

  442. I don't read

  443. the Bible enough.

  444. I feel spiritually

  445. malnourished.

  446. And Jesus

  447. is saying,

  448. that's exactly

  449. who this bread

  450. is for.

  451. That's exactly

  452. who this bread

  453. is for.

  454. And so if you feel

  455. that your sin

  456. is awful,

  457. this bread

  458. is for you.

  459. And if you feel,

  460. I don't understand

  461. it all,

  462. this bread

  463. is for you.

  464. And if you think,

  465. I'm worried

  466. that I'm going

  467. to mess things up

  468. and let God down

  469. or let people

  470. around me down,

  471. this bread

  472. is for you.

  473. If you think,

  474. my life's a mess,

  475. I've made so many

  476. mistakes,

  477. this bread

  478. is for you.

  479. And if you're

  480. sitting here thinking,

  481. I am scared

  482. of what's going

  483. to happen

  484. when I die.

  485. This bread

  486. is for you.

  487. If you feel

  488. hungry

  489. for peace

  490. and security

  491. and joy

  492. and hope,

  493. if you feel

  494. hungry

  495. for that,

  496. then that

  497. is the

  498. need

  499. that Jesus

  500. has come

  501. to meet.

  502. And really,

  503. every one of us,

  504. everyone,

  505. everyone

  506. has got that hunger.

  507. Imagine,

  508. imagine,

  509. and maybe some of you

  510. don't even need to imagine this,

  511. maybe some of you

  512. did this today,

  513. maybe you've done it

  514. many times,

  515. but all of us

  516. think in your minds

  517. of standing

  518. at the graveside

  519. of your best friend

  520. or of your mother

  521. or your father,

  522. your husband,

  523. your wife,

  524. maybe even

  525. your child.

  526. As you imagine

  527. yourself standing there

  528. in that moment,

  529. are you satisfied

  530. to think,

  531. oh,

  532. well,

  533. they're gone,

  534. that's it?

  535. or are you

  536. hungry

  537. for hope?

  538. Hungry

  539. that there is hope

  540. for them

  541. and for you?

  542. Hungry

  543. for assurance

  544. that they are safe

  545. with Jesus

  546. and that one day

  547. you will see them

  548. again?

  549. That's

  550. the hunger

  551. that Jesus

  552. has come to satisfy.

  553. That's why

  554. Jesus

  555. raises the stakes

  556. to stop talking

  557. about the next meal

  558. of the crowd

  559. and instead

  560. to talk about

  561. their eternal destiny

  562. because this

  563. is what we need

  564. more than

  565. anything else.

  566. The bread of life

  567. is urgently

  568. and desperately

  569. needed.

  570. And you know,

  571. sometimes

  572. if you're wondering

  573. if God's working

  574. in your life,

  575. a great question

  576. to ask yourself

  577. is,

  578. are you hungry?

  579. are you hungry

  580. for security,

  581. for peace,

  582. for answers?

  583. Are you hungry

  584. to never have to

  585. be afraid

  586. of death

  587. again?

  588. If that hunger

  589. is in your heart,

  590. the Lord

  591. is drawing you.

  592. That's the hunger

  593. that Jesus

  594. has come

  595. to meet.

  596. The bread of life

  597. is needed.

  598. Secondly,

  599. the bread of life

  600. is available.

  601. As you read

  602. through this passage,

  603. you see that

  604. one of the things

  605. that Jesus

  606. emphasizes again

  607. and again

  608. is that

  609. he has come

  610. down from heaven.

  611. You see it

  612. if you look

  613. at verse 32

  614. to 33,

  615. Jesus says,

  616. truly,

  617. truly,

  618. I say to you,

  619. it was not Moses

  620. who gave you

  621. the bread from heaven,

  622. but my Father

  623. gives you

  624. the true bread

  625. from heaven,

  626. for the bread

  627. of heaven

  628. is he who

  629. comes down

  630. from heaven

  631. and gives life

  632. to the world.

  633. The same thing

  634. is repeated.

  635. If you look

  636. at verse 38,

  637. you can see it there.

  638. You can see it

  639. in 45 to 46.

  640. You can see it

  641. in verse 50

  642. to 51.

  643. In fact,

  644. this is the thing

  645. that offends

  646. the Jews.

  647. There's a kind

  648. of irony

  649. in what they're

  650. saying because

  651. they're saying

  652. to Jesus,

  653. prove yourself

  654. and he's saying,

  655. well,

  656. I'll tell you

  657. where I've come from

  658. and then he tells them

  659. and they don't like it

  660. and they're offended

  661. by what he's saying.

  662. All of it

  663. is emphasizing

  664. the fact that

  665. because Jesus

  666. has come,

  667. eternal life

  668. is available.

  669. And so the bread

  670. of life

  671. is not being

  672. kept secret.

  673. It's not reserved

  674. for the elite.

  675. The bread of life

  676. is available

  677. and it's brought

  678. out beautifully

  679. in verse 32

  680. to 33

  681. that we just

  682. read there.

  683. These verses

  684. contain

  685. some of the

  686. big theological

  687. concepts

  688. that explain

  689. what God

  690. is doing

  691. in order

  692. to make

  693. eternal life

  694. available.

  695. And these

  696. are big concepts

  697. that we want

  698. to learn

  699. and that we

  700. want to understand

  701. and John's

  702. gospel is so,

  703. so good

  704. for just

  705. leading us

  706. towards these

  707. big theological

  708. concepts

  709. that lie

  710. at the heart

  711. of the gospel.

  712. So Jesus

  713. speaks,

  714. first of all,

  715. of the Father

  716. giving the

  717. true bread

  718. from heaven.

  719. The Father

  720. gives you

  721. the true

  722. bread

  723. from heaven.

  724. And that's

  725. pointing us

  726. to the great

  727. theological

  728. concept of

  729. divine initiative.

  730. The fact

  731. that the

  732. salvation

  733. that's offered

  734. in the gospel

  735. is always

  736. initiated

  737. by God.

  738. That's one

  739. of the most

  740. important truths

  741. in the gospel.

  742. Sin has ruined

  743. our relationship

  744. with God.

  745. Sin's left

  746. humanity

  747. alienated from

  748. God.

  749. Our relationship

  750. with God

  751. is broken

  752. and we did

  753. that.

  754. It's humanity

  755. that caused

  756. that.

  757. the situation

  758. is our fault

  759. because we've

  760. rejected God.

  761. We've sinned

  762. against him.

  763. And yet when it

  764. comes to fixing

  765. that, it's

  766. God who acts

  767. first.

  768. It's God

  769. who takes

  770. the initiative.

  771. We have long

  772. forgotten about

  773. God.

  774. He has never

  775. forgotten about

  776. you.

  777. And so the

  778. whole gospel

  779. starts with

  780. him.

  781. And that

  782. divine initiative

  783. prompts what

  784. theologians

  785. have often

  786. called a

  787. voluntary

  788. condescension.

  789. And I think

  790. that is such

  791. a cool

  792. phrase.

  793. A voluntary

  794. condescension.

  795. You find it

  796. in the

  797. Westminster

  798. Confession

  799. of Faith.

  800. The Westminster

  801. Confession

  802. of Faith

  803. is a very

  804. important document

  805. for our

  806. church because

  807. we believe

  808. that the

  809. Westminster

  810. Confession

  811. of Faith

  812. is an

  813. accurate

  814. summary of

  815. what the

  816. Bible

  817. teaches.

  818. And so it

  819. was written

  820. about 400

  821. years ago.

  822. Very short,

  823. but it's got

  824. some really

  825. helpful summaries

  826. of what we

  827. believe the

  828. Bible says.

  829. And I'm

  830. going to

  831. read you

  832. the paragraph

  833. where you

  834. discover this

  835. cool phrase,

  836. voluntary

  837. condescension.

  838. It says in

  839. Westminster

  840. Confession

  841. of Faith,

  842. chapter 7,

  843. paragraph 1,

  844. the distance

  845. between God

  846. and the

  847. creature is

  848. so great

  849. that although

  850. reasonable

  851. creatures do

  852. owe

  853. obedience unto

  854. him as

  855. their creator,

  856. yet they

  857. could never

  858. have any

  859. fruition of

  860. him as

  861. their

  862. blessedness

  863. and reward,

  864. God,

  865. but by

  866. some

  867. voluntary

  868. condescension

  869. on God's

  870. part,

  871. which he

  872. has been

  873. pleased to

  874. express by

  875. way of

  876. covenant.

  877. In other

  878. words,

  879. what that's

  880. saying is

  881. that the

  882. distance

  883. between God

  884. and us

  885. is huge,

  886. it's

  887. enormous,

  888. it's so

  889. great,

  890. and in

  891. every way

  892. you could

  893. say,

  894. well,

  895. look,

  896. we're the

  897. ones who

  898. fell,

  899. we're the

  900. ones who

  901. owe him

  902. obedience,

  903. we're the

  904. ones who

  905. should work

  906. our way

  907. back up

  908. to God,

  909. sin has

  910. left us

  911. in a

  912. state where

  913. we cannot

  914. do that,

  915. and so

  916. if we

  917. try to

  918. work our

  919. way up

  920. to him,

  921. we're never

  922. going to

  923. get any

  924. blessing of

  925. knowing him,

  926. and so

  927. the only

  928. way that

  929. things can

  930. be put

  931. right is

  932. not if

  933. we make

  934. our way

  935. back up

  936. to him,

  937. but if

  938. he

  939. voluntarily

  940. condescends

  941. to us.

  942. In other

  943. words,

  944. if he

  945. chooses

  946. to come

  947. down

  948. to save

  949. us.

  950. And the

  951. reason he

  952. does that

  953. is to

  954. establish a

  955. relationship

  956. with us,

  957. a beautiful

  958. covenant

  959. relationship

  960. where he

  961. is our

  962. God and

  963. we are

  964. his

  965. people.

  966. But for

  967. that to

  968. be possible,

  969. our sin

  970. has to be

  971. dealt

  972. with,

  973. and as

  974. we think

  975. about that,

  976. we recognize

  977. that we

  978. need a

  979. saviour

  980. who's going

  981. to make

  982. atonement

  983. for our

  984. sins,

  985. and that

  986. needs to

  987. be one

  988. who can

  989. represent

  990. us,

  991. so he

  992. needs to

  993. be one

  994. of us,

  995. but it

  996. needs to

  997. be one

  998. who can

  999. fulfill

  1000. everything

  1001. that God

  1002. requires,

  1003. which is

  1004. only something

  1005. that God

  1006. can do.

  1007. So the

  1008. mediator

  1009. between God

  1010. and man

  1011. has to

  1012. be God

  1013. and man,

  1014. and the

  1015. big theological

  1016. concept we

  1017. talk about

  1018. there is

  1019. the incarnation,

  1020. where God

  1021. himself has

  1022. come down

  1023. to be one

  1024. of us,

  1025. and this

  1026. is what

  1027. John's

  1028. gospel is

  1029. revealing to

  1030. us more

  1031. and more

  1032. and more,

  1033. that this

  1034. is who

  1035. Jesus is.

  1036. He is

  1037. God the

  1038. Son,

  1039. and he

  1040. has been

  1041. made

  1042. flesh,

  1043. he's

  1044. taken on

  1045. our

  1046. humanity,

  1047. and so

  1048. when we

  1049. say

  1050. incarnation,

  1051. the

  1052. carn bit

  1053. of that

  1054. word is

  1055. the Latin

  1056. word for

  1057. flesh,

  1058. so

  1059. enfleshment,

  1060. he's just

  1061. become

  1062. human,

  1063. like us,

  1064. that's how

  1065. far God's

  1066. come,

  1067. not to

  1068. appear above

  1069. us,

  1070. not to

  1071. draw near

  1072. to us,

  1073. not even

  1074. to touch

  1075. us,

  1076. but actually

  1077. to be

  1078. one of

  1079. us.

  1080. the

  1081. eternal

  1082. Son of

  1083. God has

  1084. become

  1085. human,

  1086. he's

  1087. come to

  1088. stand

  1089. with

  1090. us,

  1091. to stand

  1092. for us.

  1093. So you've

  1094. got divine

  1095. initiative,

  1096. voluntary

  1097. condescension,

  1098. culminating in

  1099. the incarnation

  1100. of God

  1101. the Son,

  1102. and because

  1103. of that,

  1104. he can be

  1105. the mediator

  1106. between God

  1107. and humanity,

  1108. and that

  1109. work of

  1110. mediation

  1111. involves him

  1112. standing in

  1113. our place,

  1114. which ultimately

  1115. involved him

  1116. dying in

  1117. our place,

  1118. which is

  1119. what Jesus

  1120. goes on to

  1121. speak about

  1122. at the end

  1123. of the

  1124. chapter,

  1125. where he

  1126. says that

  1127. the bread

  1128. that I

  1129. will give

  1130. for the

  1131. life of

  1132. the world

  1133. is my

  1134. flesh.

  1135. And so

  1136. Jesus here

  1137. is unfolding

  1138. the great

  1139. theological

  1140. truths that

  1141. lie at the

  1142. heart of

  1143. the gospel,

  1144. that from

  1145. God's

  1146. initiative,

  1147. there's a

  1148. voluntary

  1149. condescension

  1150. of God

  1151. the Son

  1152. becoming

  1153. flesh,

  1154. so that

  1155. he can be

  1156. our mediator,

  1157. and in

  1158. order to be

  1159. our mediator,

  1160. he needs

  1161. to die

  1162. for us,

  1163. and in

  1164. doing all

  1165. that,

  1166. God is

  1167. giving life

  1168. to the

  1169. world,

  1170. that takes

  1171. us back

  1172. to verse

  1173. 33,

  1174. the bread

  1175. of God

  1176. is he

  1177. who comes

  1178. down from

  1179. heaven,

  1180. and gives

  1181. life to

  1182. the world,

  1183. and that

  1184. salvation

  1185. is a

  1186. gift

  1187. available

  1188. to all,

  1189. and that's

  1190. all because

  1191. of God's

  1192. grace,

  1193. and so

  1194. that's what

  1195. makes the

  1196. bread of

  1197. life

  1198. available,

  1199. that's what

  1200. makes salvation

  1201. possible,

  1202. so our

  1203. heading is

  1204. the bread

  1205. of life

  1206. is available,

  1207. behind that

  1208. heading lies

  1209. all the

  1210. massive

  1211. concepts

  1212. of our

  1213. theology,

  1214. the gospel

  1215. is never

  1216. about us

  1217. working our

  1218. way up to

  1219. God,

  1220. it's about

  1221. God

  1222. coming down

  1223. to us,

  1224. and this

  1225. is where we

  1226. see something

  1227. so beautiful

  1228. and so

  1229. amazing

  1230. in the

  1231. gospel,

  1232. because in

  1233. terms of

  1234. how the

  1235. gospel works

  1236. out,

  1237. on God's

  1238. side,

  1239. the availability

  1240. of eternal

  1241. life is

  1242. captured by

  1243. these great

  1244. theological

  1245. concepts that

  1246. we've listed,

  1247. divine initiative,

  1248. voluntary

  1249. condescension,

  1250. incarnation,

  1251. mediator,

  1252. grace,

  1253. these are

  1254. amazing,

  1255. big theological

  1256. words,

  1257. that's what

  1258. God had to

  1259. do,

  1260. that summarizes

  1261. everything from

  1262. God's side

  1263. in terms of

  1264. the gospel,

  1265. but from

  1266. our side,

  1267. the availability

  1268. of the

  1269. bread of

  1270. life is

  1271. summed up

  1272. in just

  1273. one word,

  1274. and you

  1275. see it in

  1276. verse 35,

  1277. whoever,

  1278. and that

  1279. is such

  1280. an incredible

  1281. word,

  1282. whoever

  1283. comes to

  1284. Jesus,

  1285. whoever

  1286. believes in

  1287. Jesus,

  1288. whoever,

  1289. and every

  1290. single person

  1291. in here

  1292. tonight is

  1293. a whoever,

  1294. doesn't

  1295. matter what

  1296. your background

  1297. is,

  1298. and it

  1299. does not

  1300. matter what

  1301. baggage you

  1302. come with,

  1303. and it

  1304. doesn't matter

  1305. if you look

  1306. around this

  1307. room tonight

  1308. and you

  1309. think everybody

  1310. else is

  1311. different from

  1312. me,

  1313. everybody

  1314. else is

  1315. better than

  1316. me,

  1317. and nobody

  1318. else has

  1319. done what

  1320. I have

  1321. done,

  1322. nobody else

  1323. doubts the

  1324. way I

  1325. doubt,

  1326. nobody

  1327. else has

  1328. the questions

  1329. that I

  1330. have,

  1331. nobody

  1332. else's

  1333. heart is

  1334. as cold

  1335. as my

  1336. heart,

  1337. all of

  1338. those thoughts

  1339. are just

  1340. blown away

  1341. by the

  1342. word

  1343. whoever.

  1344. you could

  1345. have a

  1346. million

  1347. reasons

  1348. that makes

  1349. you think

  1350. you're not

  1351. worthy of

  1352. Jesus,

  1353. whoever

  1354. trumps

  1355. them all.

  1356. And

  1357. it does

  1358. not matter

  1359. who is

  1360. coming,

  1361. the only

  1362. thing that

  1363. matters

  1364. is who

  1365. you are

  1366. coming to.

  1367. you come

  1368. to Jesus,

  1369. the bread

  1370. of life.

  1371. And so

  1372. the bread

  1373. of life

  1374. is available.

  1375. That takes

  1376. us to our

  1377. third point,

  1378. we're running

  1379. out of time.

  1380. The bread

  1381. of life

  1382. has got to

  1383. be received,

  1384. so the bread

  1385. of life

  1386. is needed,

  1387. we need it

  1388. more than

  1389. anything else,

  1390. the bread

  1391. of life

  1392. is available,

  1393. Jesus has

  1394. actually come,

  1395. but we

  1396. have got to

  1397. respond,

  1398. we have to

  1399. receive what

  1400. he's offering

  1401. us.

  1402. And you

  1403. can see that

  1404. the crowd

  1405. want this in

  1406. verse 34,

  1407. they say

  1408. to Jesus,

  1409. give us

  1410. this bread

  1411. always,

  1412. they want

  1413. what he's

  1414. offering,

  1415. and in

  1416. verse 35,

  1417. Jesus tells

  1418. them what

  1419. to do,

  1420. I'm the

  1421. bread of

  1422. life,

  1423. whoever

  1424. comes to

  1425. me shall

  1426. not hunger,

  1427. and whoever

  1428. believes in

  1429. me shall

  1430. never thirst.

  1431. And there's

  1432. two key

  1433. verbs in

  1434. that verse

  1435. that tell us

  1436. exactly what

  1437. we have to

  1438. do,

  1439. we have to

  1440. come,

  1441. and we

  1442. have to

  1443. believe.

  1444. come is

  1445. such a

  1446. beautiful

  1447. word,

  1448. it's an

  1449. invitation,

  1450. and it

  1451. tells you

  1452. that God

  1453. wants you

  1454. close to

  1455. him,

  1456. that God

  1457. is calling

  1458. you,

  1459. commanding

  1460. you,

  1461. urging you

  1462. to come

  1463. to him.

  1464. The

  1465. voluntary

  1466. condescension

  1467. of God,

  1468. the incarnation

  1469. of the

  1470. son of

  1471. God,

  1472. the mediation

  1473. of the

  1474. Christ,

  1475. and every

  1476. other

  1477. massive

  1478. theological

  1479. concept

  1480. that we

  1481. have in

  1482. the gospel

  1483. is all

  1484. because God

  1485. actually

  1486. wants you.

  1487. And whether

  1488. you have

  1489. been a

  1490. Christian for

  1491. years,

  1492. or whether

  1493. you are not

  1494. yet a

  1495. Christian,

  1496. or not

  1497. sure if

  1498. you're a

  1499. Christian,

  1500. you've got

  1501. to write

  1502. these words

  1503. on your

  1504. heart,

  1505. that God

  1506. actually

  1507. wants you,

  1508. because it

  1509. is so easy

  1510. to feel

  1511. unwantable

  1512. before God.

  1513. It's so easy

  1514. to feel

  1515. unlovable,

  1516. and it's so

  1517. easy to feel

  1518. like we are

  1519. just so far

  1520. from what

  1521. we wish

  1522. we were,

  1523. and Jesus

  1524. is saying,

  1525. the whole

  1526. reason I

  1527. have come

  1528. is because

  1529. I want

  1530. you.

  1531. And so

  1532. Jesus wants

  1533. you to

  1534. come to

  1535. him.

  1536. He wants

  1537. to hear

  1538. your voice

  1539. praying.

  1540. He wants

  1541. to hear

  1542. your voice

  1543. tonight,

  1544. whether

  1545. that is the

  1546. first time

  1547. that he'll

  1548. have heard

  1549. your voice

  1550. praying in

  1551. decades,

  1552. he wants

  1553. to hear

  1554. that

  1555. tonight.

  1556. And

  1557. whether you've

  1558. prayed every

  1559. day for as

  1560. long as you

  1561. can remember,

  1562. he wants

  1563. to hear

  1564. your voice

  1565. again.

  1566. And he

  1567. wants your

  1568. ears to

  1569. listen to

  1570. what he's

  1571. saying in

  1572. his word,

  1573. and he

  1574. wants your

  1575. hearts to

  1576. rest in

  1577. him for

  1578. every moment

  1579. of your

  1580. life.

  1581. He wants

  1582. you to

  1583. come.

  1584. and he

  1585. wants you

  1586. to believe.

  1587. That's the

  1588. language of

  1589. trust.

  1590. And so

  1591. as we

  1592. come to

  1593. Jesus,

  1594. we come

  1595. placing our

  1596. reliance on

  1597. him.

  1598. In other

  1599. words, we

  1600. just come

  1601. and lean

  1602. on him.

  1603. We come

  1604. and receive

  1605. and rest

  1606. upon him

  1607. for our

  1608. salvation.

  1609. And that's

  1610. just such a

  1611. beautiful,

  1612. beautiful picture

  1613. that it's

  1614. like Jesus

  1615. wants us to

  1616. come and

  1617. he wants

  1618. us to lean

  1619. on him.

  1620. Not to

  1621. come and

  1622. be impressed

  1623. not to

  1624. come for

  1625. a job

  1626. interview

  1627. where you

  1628. have to

  1629. be at

  1630. your best,

  1631. but actually

  1632. just to

  1633. come and

  1634. fall into

  1635. his arms.

  1636. That's

  1637. the response

  1638. that God

  1639. is looking

  1640. for.

  1641. That we

  1642. are to

  1643. believe in

  1644. Jesus.

  1645. That's how

  1646. the gospel

  1647. works.

  1648. We're saved

  1649. by faith.

  1650. That doesn't

  1651. mean knowing

  1652. everything.

  1653. And in so

  1654. many ways,

  1655. faith is an

  1656. expression of

  1657. the fact that

  1658. we don't

  1659. know everything,

  1660. but we know

  1661. that Jesus

  1662. is trustworthy.

  1663. And we

  1664. will lean

  1665. on him.

  1666. And believing

  1667. in Jesus

  1668. doesn't mean

  1669. never doubting.

  1670. All of us

  1671. doubt.

  1672. All of us

  1673. stumble.

  1674. But the

  1675. whole point

  1676. is that when

  1677. we doubt,

  1678. when we stumble,

  1679. all of these

  1680. are expressions

  1681. of our

  1682. hunger,

  1683. which is

  1684. just a

  1685. reason to

  1686. go straight

  1687. to Jesus

  1688. and to

  1689. fall into

  1690. his arms

  1691. again.

  1692. And believing

  1693. in Jesus

  1694. does not

  1695. mean feeling

  1696. strong or

  1697. confident.

  1698. confident,

  1699. it's actually

  1700. just recognizing

  1701. how weak

  1702. we are.

  1703. And the

  1704. thing that's

  1705. strong in

  1706. terms of

  1707. our faith is

  1708. not the

  1709. person doing

  1710. the believing,

  1711. it's the

  1712. person that

  1713. we believe

  1714. in.

  1715. He's the

  1716. one who's

  1717. strong.

  1718. It means

  1719. knowing that

  1720. you can't

  1721. stand on

  1722. your own.

  1723. It means

  1724. knowing that

  1725. I have to

  1726. rely on what

  1727. Jesus has

  1728. done for

  1729. me on the

  1730. cross.

  1731. And it

  1732. means realizing

  1733. that we

  1734. need him

  1735. more than

  1736. we need

  1737. anything else.

  1738. It doesn't

  1739. mean knowing

  1740. it all.

  1741. And, you

  1742. know, that's

  1743. definitely how I

  1744. could express

  1745. my own

  1746. conversion.

  1747. I became a

  1748. Christian when

  1749. I was about

  1750. 14 and

  1751. honestly, I

  1752. think I knew

  1753. pretty much

  1754. nothing except

  1755. one thing.

  1756. I knew that

  1757. I needed

  1758. Jesus.

  1759. And that's

  1760. what we

  1761. need to

  1762. know.

  1763. That will

  1764. drive us

  1765. to Christ.

  1766. And the

  1767. amazing thing

  1768. is that his

  1769. promise is

  1770. that as we

  1771. fall into

  1772. his arms,

  1773. he will

  1774. carry us

  1775. all the

  1776. way.

  1777. Jesus

  1778. is the

  1779. bread of

  1780. life.

  1781. And the

  1782. bread of

  1783. life has

  1784. got to

  1785. be

  1786. received.

  1787. believed.

  1788. And

  1789. sometimes,

  1790. you know,

  1791. this is a

  1792. key, this

  1793. is I think a

  1794. really important

  1795. thing for us

  1796. to recognize

  1797. because sometimes

  1798. like the

  1799. people in

  1800. this crowd,

  1801. we kind

  1802. of want

  1803. proof about

  1804. Jesus and

  1805. we want to

  1806. be able to

  1807. sort of think,

  1808. well, how do

  1809. we know for

  1810. certain?

  1811. And we want

  1812. to sort of

  1813. test Jesus,

  1814. test evidence,

  1815. test arguments,

  1816. test the

  1817. Bible against

  1818. other viewpoints,

  1819. whatever it

  1820. might be.

  1821. And we kind

  1822. of think, I

  1823. just want that

  1824. proof that this

  1825. is true.

  1826. And sometimes

  1827. we also think,

  1828. well, I also

  1829. just want that

  1830. proof that I

  1831. really am

  1832. converted, that

  1833. there has to

  1834. be that sign,

  1835. that clarity,

  1836. that event,

  1837. that something

  1838. that is going

  1839. to make it

  1840. clear.

  1841. And we want

  1842. that proof.

  1843. But again,

  1844. think about

  1845. bread.

  1846. There's a piece

  1847. of bread in

  1848. front of you

  1849. and you think,

  1850. I want proof

  1851. that that's

  1852. bread.

  1853. And you could

  1854. do some

  1855. scientific

  1856. experiments on

  1857. it or you

  1858. could take

  1859. out a whole

  1860. pile of

  1861. books and

  1862. you could

  1863. compare the

  1864. bread in

  1865. front of you

  1866. with some

  1867. photos or

  1868. you could

  1869. listen to

  1870. some bread

  1871. expert who

  1872. might be

  1873. able to

  1874. say, well,

  1875. there's a

  1876. little bit

  1877. here that

  1878. says it's

  1879. bread or

  1880. not.

  1881. You could

  1882. do all

  1883. of that.

  1884. It's not

  1885. really going

  1886. to work.

  1887. How are

  1888. you going

  1889. to know

  1890. that that's

  1891. bread?

  1892. Stick it in

  1893. your mouth

  1894. and eat it.

  1895. Just take

  1896. it.

  1897. If you want

  1898. proof that

  1899. Jesus is real,

  1900. that he's

  1901. your saviour,

  1902. then just

  1903. trust him

  1904. and follow

  1905. him.

  1906. that bread

  1907. is to be

  1908. received.

  1909. And so

  1910. the bread

  1911. of life

  1912. is needed.

  1913. The bread

  1914. of life

  1915. is available.

  1916. The bread

  1917. of life

  1918. has got

  1919. to be

  1920. received.

  1921. Last of

  1922. all,

  1923. the bread

  1924. of life

  1925. is so,

  1926. so

  1927. satisfying.

  1928. And that's

  1929. because

  1930. Jesus

  1931. gives us

  1932. what we

  1933. long for.

  1934. This is one

  1935. of the biggest

  1936. mistakes that

  1937. people can

  1938. make.

  1939. They can

  1940. think that

  1941. becoming a

  1942. Christian means

  1943. giving up

  1944. the things

  1945. that we

  1946. really like.

  1947. That's one

  1948. of the devil's

  1949. biggest lies.

  1950. Because

  1951. putting your

  1952. faith in

  1953. Jesus means

  1954. that you

  1955. actually

  1956. finally

  1957. find

  1958. everything

  1959. that you

  1960. have really

  1961. longed for.

  1962. And in

  1963. fact,

  1964. you find

  1965. that it

  1966. reorders

  1967. your life

  1968. so that

  1969. all the

  1970. other things

  1971. actually

  1972. become way

  1973. better.

  1974. And that

  1975. enjoyment

  1976. increases so

  1977. much once

  1978. Jesus takes

  1979. his rightful

  1980. place as

  1981. the Lord

  1982. that we

  1983. are following.

  1984. Jesus gives

  1985. us what

  1986. we long

  1987. for.

  1988. He satisfies

  1989. our hunger

  1990. for identity

  1991. and purpose

  1992. in our

  1993. lives.

  1994. We all

  1995. want to have

  1996. purpose.

  1997. We all

  1998. want to be

  1999. special.

  2000. None of

  2001. us want

  2002. to be a

  2003. waste of

  2004. space or

  2005. a failure.

  2006. We all

  2007. want a

  2008. part to

  2009. play.

  2010. Jesus

  2011. gives us

  2012. that like

  2013. nothing else.

  2014. Jesus

  2015. satisfies our

  2016. hunger for

  2017. hope.

  2018. Nobody,

  2019. nobody can

  2020. live without

  2021. hope.

  2022. hope is

  2023. like the

  2024. I don't

  2025. know how

  2026. to describe

  2027. this.

  2028. Hope is

  2029. like the

  2030. sniper rifle

  2031. for the

  2032. atheist.

  2033. Because the

  2034. atheist,

  2035. a terrible

  2036. illustration,

  2037. but anyway,

  2038. might as well

  2039. go with it.

  2040. The atheist

  2041. goes along

  2042. and they're

  2043. like, I'm a

  2044. consistent

  2045. atheist, I'm

  2046. not believing

  2047. in anything,

  2048. I'm not

  2049. believing in

  2050. anything,

  2051. I'm not

  2052. believing in

  2053. anything,

2054. da da da da da da da da.

  2055. Someone they love

  2056. dies, I hope I'll see

  2057. them again.

  2058. And the

  2059. sniper of hope

  2060. has just

  2061. shot their

  2062. atheism to

  2063. pieces.

  2064. Because they're

  2065. desperate for

  2066. hope.

  2067. We're all

  2068. desperate for

  2069. hope, Jesus

  2070. gives it to

  2071. us.

  2072. Jesus

  2073. satisfies our

  2074. hunger for

  2075. security.

  2076. And we

  2077. long for

  2078. that, don't

  2079. we?

  2080. Life changes

  2081. and sometimes

  2082. things happen

  2083. that we

  2084. dread.

  2085. And maybe

  2086. right now

  2087. some of

  2088. you have

  2089. received a

  2090. diagnosis or

  2091. news about

  2092. a family

  2093. member or

  2094. a friend that

  2095. is your

  2096. worst nightmare

  2097. and you

  2098. feel so

  2099. vulnerable and

  2100. yet you are

  2101. never, ever,

  2102. ever outside

  2103. the arms of

  2104. Jesus if

  2105. you're following

  2106. him.

  2107. That satisfies

  2108. our hunger for

  2109. security.

  2110. And Jesus

  2111. satisfies our

  2112. hunger for

  2113. love.

  2114. Because in

  2115. Jesus we

  2116. find perfect

  2117. love, eternal

  2118. love,

  2119. immeasurable

  2120. love, love

  2121. that will

  2122. never grow

  2123. cold, love

  2124. that will

  2125. never let us

  2126. go.

  2127. The bread of

  2128. life is so

  2129. satisfying.

  2130. and this

  2131. is seen,

  2132. this is

  2133. captured so

  2134. beautifully

  2135. in verse

  2136. 35 but in

  2137. order to see

  2138. that we have

  2139. to actually go

  2140. back to the

  2141. Greek of

  2142. verse 35.

  2143. The New

  2144. Testament was

  2145. written in

  2146. Greek and

  2147. we are

  2148. always working

  2149. with a

  2150. translation and

  2151. our translations

  2152. are brilliant,

  2153. the ESV is a

  2154. brilliant translation,

  2155. but sometimes

  2156. there's things

  2157. that just are

  2158. hard to get

  2159. across in

  2160. English.

  2161. Now Greek

  2162. is a little

  2163. bit different

  2164. from English

  2165. in terms of

  2166. saying no

  2167. about something.

  2168. So if we

  2169. say I am

  2170. not, not

  2171. going to

  2172. the fellowship

  2173. afterwards,

  2174. what have I

  2175. just said in

  2176. English?

  2177. So I've said

  2178. I'm going

  2179. because the

  2180. not, not

  2181. cancels each

  2182. other out.

  2183. So if I

  2184. said I'm

  2185. not, not

  2186. going to the

  2187. fellowship, it

  2188. means I am

  2189. going to the

  2190. fellowship.

  2191. Not, not

  2192. in English, the

  2193. two cancel

  2194. each other

  2195. out.

  2196. That's not

  2197. how it

  2198. works in

  2199. Greek.

  2200. In Greek,

  2201. not, not

  2202. is an

  2203. intensification.

  2204. So it's

  2205. like absolutely

  2206. not.

  2207. So we

  2208. would say

  2209. that if we

  2210. said no,

  2211. no, that's

  2212. like an

  2213. intensification.

  2214. Not, not

  2215. in Greek is

  2216. the same.

  2217. And when it

  2218. says at the

  2219. end there that

  2220. whoever believes

  2221. in me shall

  2222. never thirst,

  2223. thirst, literally

  2224. what that

  2225. actually says

  2226. is whoever

  2227. believes in

  2228. me shall

  2229. not, not

  2230. thirst, shall

  2231. absolutely not

  2232. thirst ever.

  2233. You will

  2234. never thirst

  2235. again.

  2236. And that is

  2237. because Jesus,

  2238. the bread of

  2239. life, is so,

  2240. so satisfying.

  2241. And that is

  2242. something that I

  2243. want, if anybody's

  2244. here who's not

  2245. yet a Christian

  2246. or thinking about

  2247. becoming a

  2248. Christian or

  2249. thinking about

  2250. just taking that

  2251. next step, that

  2252. is the thing I

  2253. want to press

  2254. into your heart

  2255. more than

  2256. anything else.

  2257. I can't promise

  2258. you that it

  2259. will always be

  2260. easy and I

  2261. can't promise

  2262. you that things

  2263. will always go

  2264. well and

  2265. sometimes you

  2266. will have

  2267. rubbish days

  2268. because we

  2269. all have

  2270. rubbish days,

  2271. but I can

  2272. tell you this,

  2273. that if you

  2274. follow Jesus,

  2275. you will

  2276. absolutely

  2277. never thirst

  2278. again,

  2279. ever.

  2280. Surely,

  2281. you want

  2282. that.

  2283. Amen.

  2284. Let's pray.

  2285. Lord Jesus,

  2286. we thank you

  2287. so much that

  2288. you are the

  2289. bread of

  2290. life.

  2291. And we

  2292. pray that we

  2293. would all

  2294. come to

  2295. you and

  2296. believe in

  2297. you and

  2298. experience the

  2299. wonder of

  2300. never

  2301. hungering and

  2302. never

  2303. thirsting

  2304. again.

  2305. Please bless

  2306. your word to

  2307. us all.

  2308. Please press

  2309. it into our

  2310. hearts and

  2311. please may

  2312. your spirit

  2313. bring forth

  2314. fruit to

  2315. your glory.

  2316. amen.

  2317. Amen.

  2318. We're going

  2319. to close in

  2320. the Sing

  2321. Psalms version

  2322. of Psalm

  2323. 63 on

  2324. page 80.

  2325. Sing

  2326. Psalms

  2327. 63 on

  2328. page 80.

  2329. O God,

  2330. you are my

  2331. God alone.

  2332. I seek

  2333. your face

  2334. with eagerness.

  2335. My soul

  2336. and body

  2337. thirst for

  2338. you in

  2339. this dry

  2340. weary

  2341. wilderness.

  2342. Singing

  2343. to the end

  2344. of verse

  2345. 8.

  2346. And if

  2347. you are

  2348. at that

  2349. point where

  2350. you know

  2351. you want

  2352. to put your

  2353. faith in

  2354. Jesus,

  2355. then just

  2356. make verse

  2357. 7 and

  2358. 8 your

  2359. prayer.

  2360. because

  2361. you're

  2362. my

  2363. help

  2364. alone.

  2365. In

  2366. shadow

  2367. of your

  2368. wings

  2369. I'll

  2370. sing.

  2371. You

  2372. hold

  2373. me

  2374. up

  2375. with

  2376. your

  2377. right

  2378. hand.

  2379. To

  2380. you,

  2381. O God,

  2382. my soul

  2383. will cling.

  2384. That's a

  2385. prayer of

  2386. conversion.

  2387. And we

  2388. can all

  2389. make it

  2390. our

  2391. prayer as

  2392. we stand

  2393. and sing

  2394. together.

  2395. O God,

  2396. you are

  2397. my

  2398. God

  2399. alone.

  2400. I

  2401. seek

  2402. your

  2403. face

  2404. with

  2405. weakness.

  2406. My

  2407. soul

  2408. and

  2409. body

  2410. urge

  2411. for

  2412. you

  2413. and

  2414. bless

  2415. my

  2416. living

  2417. wilderness.

  2418. I

  2419. sing

  2420. you

  2421. praise.

  2422. When

  2423. your

  2424. holy

  2425. place,

  2426. your

  2427. heart

  2428. and

  2429. glory

  2430. held

  2431. my

  2432. gains,

  2433. our

  2434. better

  2435. is

  2436. your

  2437. love

  2438. and

  2439. life,

  2440. and

  2441. so

  2442. my

  2443. lips

  2444. will

  2445. sing

  2446. your

  2447. praise.

  2448. I

  2449. I'll

  2450. bless you,

  2451. Lord,

  2452. throughout

  2453. my

  2454. life,

  2455. and

  2456. raise

  2457. my

  2458. heart

  2459. to

  2460. you

  2461. in

  2462. place.

  2463. My

  2464. joyful

  2465. lips

  2466. will

  2467. sing

  2468. praise.

  2469. My

  2470. soul

  2471. is

  2472. fed

  2473. with

  2474. riches

  2475. !

  2476. fail.

  2477. Upon

  2478. bed

  2479. I

  2480. lie

  2481. awake

  2482. and

  2483. in

  2484. my

  2485. thoughts

  2486. remember

  2487. you.

  2488. I

  2489. meditate

  2490. throughout

  2491. the

  2492. night

  2493. and

  2494. keep

  2495. your

  2496. constant

  2497. love

  2498. in

  2499. view

  2500. because

  2501. you

  2502. are

  2503. my

  2504. help

  2505. alone

  2506. in

  2507. of

  2508. your

  2509. and

  2510. you

  2511. are

  2512. my

  2513. help

  2514. alone

  2515. in

  2516. shadow

  2517. of

  2518. your

  2519. wings

  2520. I'll

  2521. sing

  2522. you

  2523. hold

  2524. me

  2525. up

  2526. with

  2527. your

  2528. bright

  2529. hand

  2530. to

  2531. you

  2532. O

  2533. God

  2534. my

  2535. soul

  2536. will

  2537. play

  2538. Just

  2539. to say

  2540. I forgot

  2541. at the beginning

  2542. fellowship

  2543. hall next

  2544. which

  2545. everybody

  2546. is

  2547. will hear

  2548. a little

  2549. bit more

  2550. from

  2551. Thomas

  2552. and

  2553. about

  2554. their

  2555. and

  2556. so

  2557. you're

  2558. all

  2559. not

  2560. going

  2561. do

  2562. come

  2563. through

  2564. if

  2565. able

  2566. to

  2567. thank

  2568. you

  2569. for

  2570. your

  2571. thank

  2572. you

  2573. the

  2574. fellowship

  2575. that

  2576. we're

  2577. able

  2578. to

  2579. share

  2580. we

  2581. pray

  2582. that

  2583. that

  2584. be

  2585. that

  2586. our hearts

  2587. and

  2588. will

  2589. rest

  2590. upon

  2591. all

  2592. we

  2593. week

  2594. week

  2595. our

  2596. to

  2597. your

  2598. Amen

  2599. to

  2600. the

  2601. to

  2602. to

  2603. may
