  1. Well, we can turn back to our reading in 1 Corinthians 15.

  2. !

  3. The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.

  4. But thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  5. Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord,

  6. knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

  7. 1 Corinthians 15 is such a wonderful chapter as a whole.

  8. I remember when, before James McKeever left the congregation here,

  9. he went through the whole of this chapter just looking at the wonder of the resurrection

  10. and all that it means, and such a powerful passage.

  11. And it really does give us a sense of focus on what we are to look at and keep our eyes fixed upon.

  12. We can look back over the summer months or even just the last few weeks,

  13. and we can see we have much to give thanks for.

  14. When you think of things that have been going on in the congregation and in other parts of the church,

  15. there's much to give thanks for.

  16. We think of the holiday club.

  17. It was such a time of great blessing, seeing so many young people coming along there,

  18. sharing the good news of Jesus with them and seeing them learning from the Word of God.

  19. Of course, then we had the induction just a couple of weeks ago in Gravar.

  20. It's a time of great rejoicing.

  21. And again, I mention it again just because it just stays with you.

  22. The power of the singing on that evening was just something to behold.

  23. If you are present, it is something that will remain with you, I'm sure, for a very long time,

  24. just that sense of power in praising God.

  25. Then, of course, last weekend, we have much to give thanks for looking back on a communion weekend,

  26. being under God's Word and having a time of fellowship together

  27. and remembering the Lord's death, having our eyes focused, our hearts focused on what He has done for us.

  28. We had a great time yesterday, the church day out, where many came along to it.

  29. And then this morning, again, just seeing so many young people in the church so full this morning,

  30. there's so much to be thankful for.

  31. We have much to rejoice and give thanks to God for.

  32. But as with anything, when we have these good experiences, these high experiences,

  33. when we enjoy the Lord's blessing in particular ways, we have to carry on as well.

  34. We have to go on.

  35. It's not all about these high points.

  36. So often it's about the day-to-day things.

  37. And maybe we look ahead.

  38. We maybe look ahead with a sense of where do we go now?

  39. What do we do?

  40. How do we carry on?

  41. And that's the kind of question I want us to think about this evening.

  42. How do we go on?

  43. How do we go on?

  44. How do we keep going as we seek the Lord's blessing upon us?

  45. Great as the high points of encouragement are.

  46. We don't rely on these things, on these occasions,

  47. to be where we find our blessing and encouragement at all times.

  48. But instead, we are to remember that we are always to rely on the Lord, on his word,

  49. because that is where we find our daily encouragement.

  50. When we daily come to him, seeking his face, seeking his presence, seeking his blessing.

  51. So this chapter that we have before us this evening, chapter 15,

  52. it's one of those where we are reminded that those who come to trust in the Lord Jesus Christ,

  53. have this great hope.

  54. And it's this hope, really, that drives us on, that keeps us going.

  55. And that hope is that there is life in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  56. Life for all who believe, because he is risen.

  57. And we have these great words in verse 56,

  58. the sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.

  59. The pain that sin brings, that is the sting of death.

  60. But then we see these powerful words,

  61. but thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  62. That there is encouragement there for us,

  63. whether it's for ourselves to be built up in the faith,

  64. or for our mission to reach out to those around us

  65. with this gospel that is life, that is hope in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  66. And so we are to keep our focus on him.

  67. Our two readings this evening, the first and second Chronicles,

  68. and then here in Corinthians,

  69. they both have, you could say, something in common.

  70. They are separated by probably nearly a thousand years in terms of a period of time.

  71. They are separated by a great number of years,

  72. and a lot of takes place in between the two occasions that we are looking at here.

  73. But you see that they have something in common.

  74. When you read in Chronicles there,

  75. we are reading about Asa and his reign.

  76. It was a time of great struggle for the people.

  77. You see that in the verses that we read there,

  78. how there was many who were turning away from God,

  79. who were rejecting God.

  80. And the same could be true in the days of the church in Corinth.

  81. A difficult time, a place that was corrupt in so many different ways,

  82. idols all around them,

  83. people turning away and rejecting God,

  84. God's people discouraged,

  85. God being neglected and rejected by many.

  86. You could say, well, that's what they have in common,

  87. that there's so much to be fearful about,

  88. so much to be concerned about.

  89. But that's not what I want to think about what they have in common.

  90. I want us to stand and look on something very positive

  91. that they both have in common.

  92. In 2 Chronicles 15, verse 7,

    2 Chronicles 15:7

  93. as Asa has spoken to,

  94. it says here,

  95. But you take courage.

  96. Do not let your hands be weak,

  97. for your work shall be rewarded.

  98. Asa is being told that as you are faithful to God,

  99. as you seek Him, as it says in that passage,

  100. you will find Him.

  101. He will be with you.

  102. And he is being told,

  103. Do not let your hands be weak,

  104. for your work shall be rewarded.

  105. And then you look at 1 Corinthians 15,

  106. and this verse that we're going to focus on,

  107. verse 58,

  108. Therefore, my beloved brothers,

  109. be steadfast, immovable,

  110. always abounding in the work of the Lord,

  111. knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

  112. So there's a sense of, again,

  113. take courage,

  114. don't be weak,

  115. your work shall be rewarded.

  116. It has the same theme in common in Chronicles,

  117. as it does in Corinthians.

  118. And there's great encouragement there for us as well.

  119. God's people are being told to be strong,

  120. to be willing,

  121. to be faithful,

  122. and that the work of the Lord will be blessed as we do so.

  123. So there's three things in this verse,

  124. verse 58.

  125. I just wanted to take out of this verse this evening.

  126. And the first is that sense of standing strong,

  127. be steadfast, immovable,

  128. standing strong.

  129. The second is giving ourselves,

  130. always abounding in the work of the Lord.

  131. And then the third thing is going on in faith,

  132. keeping the faith,

  133. knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

  134. So the first thing we see here is standing strong.

  135. You see there at the beginning of the verse,

  136. verse 58,

  137. therefore.

  138. So it's in light of what has come before.

  139. Therefore,

  140. in light of the mystery and the victory that we have in Jesus Christ,

  141. in light of the power of the resurrection,

  142. the hope of the resurrection,

  143. in light of everything that he has said

  144. in this wonderful passage,

  145. therefore,

  146. my beloved brothers,

  147. be steadfast,

  148. immovable,

  149. stand strong.

  150. Where does our strength come from?

  151. We so often look at our bodies

  152. and wonder about our strength

  153. or our weakness at times.

  154. In a physical way,

  155. we look at our bodies in that sense,

  156. whether we're strong

  157. or whether we're weak.

  158. Our bodies need nourishment.

  159. Our bodies need sustenance

  160. in order that we can grow on.

  161. Otherwise,

  162. we will grow weak.

  163. We will grow weary.

  164. But that's not the strength

  165. that we are looking at here.

  166. But the same is true

  167. when it comes to our spiritual strength,

  168. our spiritual nourishment.

  169. It's not from self

  170. that that comes from either.

  171. It is from the Lord.

  172. It is the Lord who gives strength.

  173. It is the Lord who gives us

  174. that spirit to go on,

  175. to be steadfast,

  176. immovable.

  177. The psalmist in Psalm 73 says,

  178. my flesh and heart

  179. doth faint and fail.

  180. He's recognizing there

  181. his own physical weakness.

  182. My flesh, my heart

  183. doth faint and fail.

  184. But what does he say?

  185. But my God fails me never.

  186. There's that sense

  187. that it is God

  188. who gives us strength.

  189. And so,

  190. we are dependent on God

  191. and receiving from God.

  192. Even looking back

  193. to last Lord's Day

  194. as we were gathered

  195. around the Lord's Supper,

  196. all who sat at the Lord's Table

  197. is for our strengthening.

  198. That's the purpose in it.

  199. The Shorter Catechism

  200. makes that clear

  201. as we think of

  202. the Lord's Supper,

  203. the sacrament of the Lord's Supper.

  204. By faith,

  205. we are made partakers

  206. of his body and blood

  207. with all his benefits

  208. to their spiritual nourishment

  209. and growth in grace.

  210. Spiritual nourishment

  211. and growth in grace.

  212. It's about being made strong,

  213. being strengthened

  214. in the Lord.

  215. And the Psalms,

  216. they so often speak

  217. of that sense.

  218. Psalm 46,

  219. we know it well,

  220. perhaps God is our refuge

  221. and our strength.

  222. There is that sense

  223. of dependence.

  224. Something that's repeated

  225. again and again

  226. throughout Scripture.

  227. How can we be

  228. steadfast and immovable?

  229. It is by looking

  230. to and trusting

  231. in God.

  232. 1 Corinthians 15, 58,

  233. Be steadfast, immovable.

  234. 2 Chronicles 15, verse 7,

    2 Chronicles 15:7

  235. Take courage.

  236. They have that same

  237. sense of being strong,

  238. just like Joshua hears,

  239. Be strong and courageous,

  240. for I am with you.

  241. There is that sense

  242. of God

  243. being with us.

  244. Earlier in 2 Chronicles,

  245. in chapter 7,

  246. there are these

  247. well-known words

  248. in verse 14 and 15,

  249. If my people

  250. who are called

  251. by my name

  252. humble themselves

  253. and pray

  254. and seek my face

  255. and turn from

  256. their wicked ways,

  257. then I will hear

  258. from heaven

  259. and will forgive

  260. their sin

  261. and heal

  262. their lands.

  263. There is that hope

  264. that as we turn

  265. to God

  266. that we can be

  267. strong in Him.

  268. So the call

  269. is there

  270. to return

  271. to the Lord

  272. and to His strength.

  273. Seek the Lord

  274. as we were

  275. thinking about

  276. this morning.

  277. As we come back

  278. to Him,

  279. we look to Him.

  280. And so we see here

  281. that there is

  282. great encouragement

  283. for us

  284. to give thanks

  285. to God

  286. to go on

  287. in His strength.

  288. Remembering

  289. we have

  290. this hope

  291. in Christ,

  292. this great hope.

  293. Constantly

  294. as we hear

  295. the Word of God,

  296. as we just reflect back

  297. on all that we heard

  298. last week,

  299. whether it was from

  300. Thomas

  301. or David Strain,

  302. the encouragement

  303. we heard

  304. in the preaching here

  305. or from Ian Thompson

  306. as well,

  307. there was so much

  308. to remind us

  309. of how we are

  310. a precious people,

  311. a redeemed people.

  312. We are loved

  313. by God.

  314. We are His sons

  315. and daughters

  316. through faith,

  317. through all

  318. of these things.

  319. How do we go on?

  320. Spiritual

  321. nourishment,

  322. steadfast,

  323. immovable.

  324. What a hope

  325. there is

  326. through the resurrection

  327. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  328. What a hope

  329. we have

  330. to look forward to

  331. because

  332. He is risen.

  333. There is a hope

  334. that enables us

  335. to go on.

  336. The word

  337. steadfast there,

  338. it literally means

  339. rooted

  340. and grounded.

  341. Strength

  342. is rooted

  343. and grounded.

  344. It is

  345. immovable.

  346. We see around us

  347. when the winds

  348. come that

  349. those trees

  350. and the castle

  351. grounds

  352. that are weak roots,

  353. the wind

  354. will blow them over.

  355. But here

  356. we are being told

  357. that when we are

  358. in the Lord

  359. we have that

  360. steadfast,

  361. immovable,

  362. rooted and

  363. grounded

  364. in Him.

  365. We have a strength

  366. that the Word

  367. of God

  368. promises.

  369. Immovable

  370. has behind

  371. that sense

  372. of being stubborn.

  373. And we often

  374. think of being

  375. stubborn as being

  376. something negative.

  377. But it's very much

  378. a positive here.

  379. Therefore,

  380. my beloved brothers,

  381. be steadfast,

  382. immovable.

  383. There are times

  384. when stubbornness

  385. is appropriate

  386. when it comes

  387. to the things

  388. of God.

  389. To be steadfast,

  390. immovable in them.

  391. Not to be shaken

  392. by other

  393. false teachings

  394. that we hear.

  395. Not to be shaken

  396. by people

  397. who mock our faith

  398. or ridicule

  399. or anything like that.

  400. But to see

  401. death,

  402. sting,

  403. sin

  404. is dealt with.

  405. There is victory

  406. in Christ.

  407. Therefore,

  408. we can be

  409. steadfast

  410. and immovable.

  411. So we seek

  412. that strength

  413. of God.

  414. The second thing

  415. we see here

  416. is how do we go on?

  417. We go on

  418. by giving

  419. ourselves.

  420. Always

  421. abounding

  422. in the work

  423. of the Lord.

  424. Again,

  425. just as we reflected

  426. this morning,

  427. there's always

  428. behind all of these

  429. things.

  430. all that we do

  431. for the Lord.

  432. There is behind it

  433. always that sense

  434. of God is sovereign

  435. in all things.

  436. Psalm 105

  437. that we were looking

  438. at this morning.

  439. The bulk of it

  440. is made up

  441. of reminding us

  442. of just how God

  443. is in control

  444. of all things.

  445. And yet there are

  446. imperatives for us

  447. in that psalm.

  448. Things that we are

  449. to do,

  450. that we are to seek

  451. the Lord,

  452. praise the Lord.

  453. All of these things

  454. that we were thinking

  455. about this morning.

  456. And the same

  457. is true for us

  458. here in this passage

  459. as well.

  460. God is sovereign.

  461. We see that.

  462. We have no power

  463. over death ourselves.

  464. We have no power

  465. over the grave.

  466. It is all

  467. through Christ.

  468. There is victory

  469. through our Lord

  470. Jesus Christ.

  471. But because of that,

  472. there are to be

  473. consequences

  474. for ourselves.

  475. There are things

  476. that we are to be

  477. confident in

  478. and to also

  479. go on doing.

  480. Always abounding

  481. in the work

  482. of the Lord.

  483. We are to be

  484. a people of faith

  485. and to live

  486. our lives out

  487. by faith

  488. in the Lord.

  489. Everything that we

  490. do for the Lord

  491. has a sense

  492. of activity

  493. behind it.

  494. Prayer

  495. is active.

  496. It may not

  497. seem to be active

  498. in the sense

  499. of moving around

  500. or anything like that.

  501. You are just

  502. maybe sitting

  503. in the quietness

  504. of your own home

  505. by yourself.

  506. Your eyes

  507. closed,

  508. your head

  509. bowed,

  510. praying to God.

  511. There doesn't

  512. seem to be

  513. much activity

  514. there,

  515. but it is

  516. active.

  517. It is abounding

  518. in the work

  519. of the Lord

  520. because there is

  521. a labor

  522. in that.

  523. Our worship

  524. is active.

  525. It is active

  526. in coming.

  527. It is active

  528. in hearing.

  529. It is active

  530. in receiving.

  531. It is active

  532. in going

  533. and doing

  534. as we have

  535. heard.

  536. There is

  537. activity

  538. in that.

  539. Our service,

  540. all that we

  541. seek to do

  542. for the Lord,

  543. it has activity

  544. behind it

  545. as well.

  546. So there is

  547. this active

  548. nature

  549. to our faith

  550. and we are

  551. always to be

  552. abounding

  553. in the work

  554. of the Lord.

  555. There is a phrase

  556. that people

  557. sometimes use.

  558. God doesn't

  559. want your

  560. capability.

  561. He only

  562. wants your

  563. availability.

  564. If you'll

  565. give him

  566. your availability,

  567. he'll provide

  568. the capability.

  569. We are so

  570. often afraid

  571. of making

  572. ourselves

  573. available

  574. because we

  575. don't feel

  576. capable.

  577. But what that

  578. person is saying

  579. is if you

  580. make yourself

  581. available,

  582. he'll make

  583. you capable.

  584. And it's

  585. so true.

  586. It is so

  587. true in so

  588. many of the

  589. people that

  590. God uses in

  591. so many

  592. different ways.

  593. A sense

  594. of fear,

  595. a sense

  596. of trepidation,

  597. a sense

  598. of what do

  599. I have

  600. to offer.

  601. And yet

  602. when we

  603. make ourselves

  604. available,

  605. he can

  606. use us.

  607. So are

  608. you

  609. available?

  610. always

  611. abounding

  612. in the

  613. work of

  614. the

  615. Lord.

  616. It's a

  617. command.

  618. You see

  619. that with

  620. all of

  621. these things,

  622. it actually

  623. commands that

  624. little word

  625. in the

  626. beginning of

  627. the verse,

  628. therefore my

  629. beloved

  630. brothers,

  631. be,

  632. be

  633. steadfast,

  634. immovable,

  635. be always

  636. abounding

  637. in the

  638. work of

  639. the

  640. Lord.

  641. Be.

  642. Just like

  643. Isaiah

    Isaiah 6:8

  644. chapter 6

  645. verse 8,

  646. I heard

  647. the voice

  648. of the

  649. Lord

  650. saying,

  651. whom

  652. shall I

  653. send

  654. and who

  655. will go

  656. for us?

  657. Then I

  658. said,

  659. here am

  660. I,

  661. send me.

  662. That

  663. sense of

  664. abounding

  665. in the

  666. work of

  667. the

  668. Lord.

  669. We are

  670. encouraged

  671. to go

  672. on in

  673. his

  674. strength,

  675. we are

  676. encouraged

  677. to make

  678. ourselves

  679. available.

  680. because as

  681. we look

  682. to this

  683. passage,

  684. remember it's

  685. in light

  686. of the

  687. therefore at

  688. the beginning

  689. of the

  690. verse,

  691. it is in

  692. light of

  693. what Christ

  694. has done

  695. for us.

  696. In that

  697. he has

  698. given us

  699. the victory

  700. over sin,

  701. over death,

  702. because he

  703. gave himself,

  704. he gave

  705. his life.

  706. So there

  707. is this

  708. command,

  709. can you

  710. ever do

  711. too much

  712. for the

  713. Lord?

  714. The word

  715. here,

  716. abounding,

  717. it's about

  718. a fullness,

  719. overflowing,

  720. exceeding,

  721. going beyond.

  722. It's doing

  723. for the

  724. Lord the

  725. things that

  726. we are

  727. uncomfortable

  728. doing,

  729. because the

  730. only reason

  731. that we

  732. would do

  733. it is

  734. for him

  735. and for

  736. his

  737. glory,

  738. because he

  739. has lavished

  740. grace on

  741. us.

  742. We seek

  743. to do

  744. for him.

  745. We seek

  746. to abound

  747. in his

  748. work,

  749. whatever

  750. we are

  751. doing.

  752. Whatever you're

  753. doing,

  754. you are doing

  755. it as to

  756. the Lord.

  757. The littlest

  758. of things,

  759. your deceit is

  760. abounding in

  761. the work

  762. of the

  763. Lord.

  764. the little

  765. acts of

  766. service,

  767. the little

  768. acts of

  769. kindness,

  770. the volunteering

  771. in different

  772. things,

  773. all of

  774. these things,

  775. they are

  776. all abounding

  777. in the

  778. work of

  779. the Lord.

  780. It's

  781. impossible to

  782. go too

  783. far for

  784. Jesus,

  785. to do

  786. too much

  787. for Jesus,

  788. because we

  789. are doing

  790. it always

  791. for his

  792. glory.

  793. so we

  794. are to

  795. give

  796. ourselves

  797. and to

  798. go in

  799. him,

  800. and we

  801. are to

  802. go with

  803. that

  804. knowledge

  805. that he

  806. is with

  807. us.

  808. There's a

  809. story told

  810. about a

  811. climber

  812. in the

  813. Alps,

  814. in the

  815. mountain

  816. ranges of

  817. the

  818. Alps.

  819. There was

  820. a man

  821. who had

  822. a disability

  823. and he

  824. wasn't,

  825. or he

  826. felt unable

  827. to climb

  828. the mountains

  829. there.

  830. But he

  831. loved the

  832. mountains.

  833. He'd

  834. grown up

  835. on the

  836. foot of

  837. the mountains.

  838. He'd

  839. seen

  840. others

  841. going up

  842. to climb

  843. and he

  844. knew so

  845. much about

  846. what it

  847. was to

  848. climb these

  849. mountains,

  850. but he

  851. still felt

  852. he couldn't

  853. go himself.

  854. But he

  855. used to

  856. delight in

  857. telling others

  858. where they

  859. were going,

  860. all that they

  861. had to look

  862. forward to,

  863. and to give

  864. them a

  865. word of

  866. encouragement.

  867. And yet he'd

  868. never experienced

  869. them himself.

  870. Until this

  871. day,

  872. there was a

  873. famous guide

  874. passing by

  875. who had

  876. heard of

  877. this man,

  878. and heard

  879. of his

  880. disability,

  881. and heard

  882. of his

  883. delight and

  884. joy in

  885. the mountains,

  886. even though

  887. he'd never

  888. experienced

  889. them.

  890. And he

  891. said,

  892. how would

  893. you like

  894. to climb

  895. the mountain

  896. yourself?

  897. And the

  898. man's face

  899. lit up,

  900. but he

  901. said,

  902. but I

  903. can't,

  904. I'm not

  905. able.

  906. But the

  907. man encouraged

  908. him,

  909. let's try,

  910. let's go.

  911. And the

  912. man who

  913. was disabled

  914. followed.

  915. And although

  916. he was

  917. slow,

  918. although it

  919. took time,

  920. because he

  921. had this

  922. experienced

  923. man with

  924. him,

  925. this

  926. experienced

  927. climber

  928. with him,

  929. they

  930. eventually

  931. reached

  932. the summit.

  933. That

  934. man had

  935. helped him

  936. reach a

  937. place he

  938. never thought

  939. he could

  940. get.

  941. And as a

  942. reminder to

  943. ourselves,

  944. when you

  945. are abounding

  946. in the

  947. work of

  948. the Lord,

  949. we feel

  950. so unequipped,

  951. we feel

  952. so unready

  953. for it.

  954. But when

  955. we give

  956. it out

  957. all,

  958. he is

  959. able to

  960. do the

  961. rest.

  962. Always

  963. abounding

  964. in the

  965. work of

  966. the Lord.

  967. We are

  968. to make

  969. ourselves

  970. available.

  971. That is

  972. how we

  973. are to

  974. go on.

  975. The

  976. third and

  977. final thing

  978. we see

  979. here is

  980. we are

  981. to be

  982. a

  983. people

  984. who are

  985. keeping

  986. faith.

  987. Keeping

  988. faith.

  989. Knowing

  990. that in

  991. the Lord

  992. your

  993. labor

  994. is not

  995. in vain.

  996. We are

  997. to go

  998. on doing

  999. in

  1000. faith.

  1001. Believing

  1002. in all

  1003. the promises

  1004. of the

  1005. Lord Jesus

  1006. Christ.

  1007. When we

  1008. are going

  1009. on in

  1010. our own

  1011. strength,

  1012. we can

  1013. struggle

  1014. in so

  1015. many

  1016. different

  1017. ways.

  1018. We can

  1019. struggle.

  1020. We feel

  1021. we are

  1022. not

  1023. seeing

  1024. anything

  1025. happening.

  1026. But when

  1027. we go

  1028. on in

  1029. the

  1030. strength

  1031. of the

  1032. Lord,

  1033. we realize

  1034. maybe we

  1035. won't see

  1036. anything

  1037. happening.

  1038. But we

  1039. are reminded

  1040. your

  1041. labor is

  1042. not

  1043. in vain.

  1044. Nothing

  1045. you do

  1046. for the

  1047. Lord

  1048. is in

  1049. vain.

  1050. There are

  1051. many things

  1052. that we

  1053. do in

  1054. life that

  1055. are vain.

  1056. When you

  1057. look at

  1058. passages like

  1059. Ecclesiastes,

  1060. you see

  1061. vanity,

  1062. vanity,

  1063. all is

  1064. vanity.

  1065. When there

  1066. are so

  1067. many things

  1068. that we

  1069. are doing

  1070. in this

  1071. world,

  1072. it's just

  1073. in vain,

  1074. it's without

  1075. purpose,

  1076. it's without

  1077. any goal,

  1078. without anything

  1079. that's going

  1080. to be of

  1081. any benefit

  1082. at the

  1083. end of

  1084. it.

  1085. But when

  1086. we are

  1087. abounding

  1088. in the

  1089. work of

  1090. the

  1091. Lord,

  1092. we know

  1093. that in

  1094. the

  1095. Lord,

  1096. your

  1097. labor,

  1098. it's

  1099. not

  1100. in

  1101. vain.

  1102. It

  1103. is not

  1104. in

  1105. vain.

  1106. Similar

  1107. to what

  1108. it says

  1109. Chronicles

  1110. 15,

  1111. verse

  1112. 7,

  1113. for your

  1114. work

  1115. shall

  1116. be

  1117. rewarded.

  1118. !

  1119. There is

  1120. that hope

  1121. that the

  1122. Lord will

  1123. bless.

  1124. And again

  1125. we see it

  1126. in light

  1127. of what

  1128. Christ

  1129. has done.

  1130. Think of

  1131. the death

  1132. of Christ,

  1133. was that

  1134. in vain?

  1135. Of course

  1136. it wasn't.

  1137. When you

  1138. look at

  1139. verses 56

  1140. and 57

  1141. here,

  1142. the sting

  1143. of death

  1144. is sin

  1145. and the

  1146. power

  1147. of sin

  1148. is the

  1149. law.

  1150. But

  1151. thanks be

  1152. to God

  1153. who gives

  1154. us a

  1155. victory

  1156. through

  1157. our

  1158. Lord

  1159. Jesus

  1160. Christ.

  1161. He was

  1162. victorious.

  1163. He was

  1164. victorious

  1165. in his

  1166. death,

  1167. in his

  1168. resurrection.

  1169. He defeated

  1170. sin

  1171. and death

  1172. and all

  1173. of the

  1174. consequences

  1175. of it.

  1176. His

  1177. death

  1178. was not

  1179. in vain

  1180. because

  1181. he is

  1182. risen

  1183. and he

  1184. will come

  1185. again.

  1186. So we

  1187. are to

  1188. see that

  1189. in light

  1190. of everything

  1191. that we

  1192. do.

  1193. It is

  1194. not in

  1195. vain for

  1196. the Lord

  1197. because he

  1198. is the

  1199. one who

  1200. is able

  1201. to bless

  1202. it.

  1203. The empty

  1204. tomb is

  1205. that reminder

  1206. to us

  1207. that we

  1208. have a

  1209. risen

  1210. saviour

  1211. who is

  1212. ascended

  1213. on high,

  1214. who is

  1215. sitting at

  1216. the right

  1217. hand of

  1218. God the

  1219. Father,

  1220. who will

  1221. come

  1222. again.

  1223. And so

  1224. her labour

  1225. is not

  1226. in vain.

  1227. We wait

  1228. on him,

  1229. we pray

  1230. to him,

  1231. we seek

  1232. his will,

  1233. and all

  1234. of these

  1235. things.

  1236. We become

  1237. impatient

  1238. at times.

  1239. We become

  1240. discouraged.

  1241. But we

  1242. come back

  1243. and look

  1244. on our

  1245. saviour.

  1246. We come

  1247. back and

  1248. fix our

  1249. eyes on

  1250. Jesus.

  1251. And then

  1252. we realise

  1253. all that

  1254. we do

  1255. in the

  1256. Lord

  1257. is not

  1258. in vain.

  1259. We are

  1260. not doing

  1261. it for

  1262. self.

  1263. We are

  1264. not doing

  1265. it for

  1266. our glory,

  1267. but his.

  1268. And when

  1269. we do,

  1270. he will

  1271. reward.

  1272. It will

  1273. not be

  1274. in vain.

  1275. So if

  1276. we walk

  1277. with him,

  1278. if we

  1279. work with

  1280. him,

  1281. if we

  1282. wait on

  1283. him,

  1284. and all

  1285. of these

  1286. things,

  1287. we can

  1288. see that

  1289. he will

  1290. bless.

  1291. And what

  1292. do we look

  1293. for at the

  1294. end of

  1295. the day?

  1296. Just to

  1297. be a

  1298. people who

  1299. are faithful

  1300. to him.

  1301. Enjoying

  1302. his blessings

  1303. in the

  1304. times of

  1305. great

  1306. privilege

  1307. as being

  1308. gathered

  1309. round the

  1310. Lord's

  1311. supper,

  1312. times of

  1313. induction,

  1314. times of

  1315. great

  1316. gatherings,

  1317. but being

  1318. faithful in

  1319. the little

  1320. things too.

  1321. Being

  1322. faithful in

  1323. our prayers,

  1324. being faithful

  1325. in the

  1326. reading of

  1327. the word,

  1328. being faithful

  1329. in our

  1330. service to

  1331. him,

  1332. being faithful

  1333. in encouraging

  1334. one another,

  1335. being faithful

  1336. in encouraging

  1337. those around

  1338. us,

  1339. being faithful

  1340. in all

  1341. things.

  1342. knowing that

  1343. our labor

  1344. is not

  1345. in vain.

  1346. You know,

  1347. perhaps over

  1348. this last

  1349. few weeks,

  1350. you handed

  1351. out maybe

  1352. an invitation

  1353. to the

  1354. church service

  1355. today.

  1356. Maybe you

  1357. handed out

  1358. one of

  1359. these books

  1360. to someone.

  1361. Maybe they

  1362. threw it

  1363. back at you

  1364. and said,

  1365. I don't

  1366. want it.

  1367. Maybe it's

  1368. been tossed

  1369. into the

  1370. corner,

  1371. cupboard

  1372. somewhere,

  1373. and you

  1374. think to

  1375. yourself,

  1376. they didn't

  1377. come,

  1378. they didn't

  1379. read it.

  1380. What was

  1381. the point?

  1382. it was

  1383. just in

  1384. vain.

  1385. While we

  1386. are seeing

  1387. here,

  1388. nothing that

  1389. we do for

  1390. the Lord

  1391. is in

  1392. vain.

  1393. We might

  1394. not see

  1395. an outcome

  1396. from it,

  1397. but we

  1398. can trust

  1399. and pray

  1400. that God

  1401. would bless

  1402. everything

  1403. that we

  1404. do,

  1405. every little

  1406. act that

  1407. is done

  1408. for him,

  1409. done as

  1410. a people,

  1411. steadfast,

  1412. immovable,

  1413. trusting

  1414. in him,

  1415. the one

  1416. who is

  1417. risen,

  1418. abounding

  1419. in the

  1420. work of

  1421. the Lord,

  1422. doing all

  1423. for his

  1424. glory,

  1425. knowing that

  1426. in all

  1427. things,

  1428. it is

  1429. not in

  1430. vain,

  1431. in all

  1432. things,

  1433. he is

  1434. able to

  1435. reward.

  1436. And so

  1437. may we

  1438. go on

  1439. today,

  1440. tomorrow,

  1441. in all

  1442. the days

  1443. ahead of

  1444. us,

  1445. encouraged,

  1446. looking

  1447. unto

  1448. Jesus,

  1449. being

  1450. steadfast,

  1451. unimmovable

  1452. in all

  1453. of these

  1454. things,

  1455. always

  1456. abounding

  1457. in the

  1458. work of

  1459. the Lord,

  1460. knowing

  1461. that in

  1462. the Lord

  1463. your

  1464. labor

  1465. is not

  1466. in vain.

  1467. May he

  1468. bless it

  1469. to his

  1470. glory.

  1471. Let us

  1472. pray.

  1473. Lord,

  1474. our

  1475. gracious

  1476. God,

  1477. we do

  1478. thank you

  1479. for the

  1480. hope that

  1481. is found

  1482. in these

  1483. passages

  1484. before us,

  1485. the hope

  1486. of the

  1487. resurrection,

  1488. the wonder

  1489. of it,

  1490. the mystery

  1491. of it,

  1492. and yet

  1493. the victory

  1494. that we

  1495. are told

  1496. about,

  1497. that is

  1498. ours through

  1499. Christ

  1500. Jesus,

  1501. our Lord,

  1502. that he

  1503. came,

  1504. he gave,

  1505. he gave

  1506. to the

  1507. uttermost,

  1508. he gave

  1509. his life,

  1510. he died

  1511. on the

  1512. cross,

  1513. and yet

  1514. on the

  1515. third day

  1516. he rose.

  1517. He rose

  1518. victorious,

  1519. victory

  1520. over death

  1521. and sin,

  1522. and therefore

  1523. we have

  1524. that hope

  1525. that we

  1526. can be

  1527. steadfast

  1528. and

  1529. immovable,

  1530. we have

  1531. that confidence

  1532. in him

  1533. and may

  1534. our confidence

  1535. only increase,

  1536. may we be

  1537. nourished and

  1538. strengthened

  1539. through his

  1540. word,

  1541. may we be

  1542. abounding

  1543. in his

  1544. work,

  1545. and may

  1546. we know

  1547. that nothing

  1548. for him

  1549. is in vain,

  1550. we seek

  1551. your blessing,

  1552. we seek

  1553. your grace,

  1554. we seek

  1555. your guidance

  1556. over all

  1557. of these

  1558. things as

  1559. we ask

  1560. it with

  1561. the forgiveness

  1562. of our

  1563. sin,

  1564. in Jesus'

  1565. name,

  1566. Amen.

  1567. Amen.

  1568. Amen.

  1569. We're

  1570. going to

  1571. conclude

  1572. by singing

  1573. to God's

  1574. praise in

  1575. the same

  1576. psalm that

  1577. we had

  1578. previously,

  1579. Psalm 111,

  1580. the Scottish

  1581. Psalter

  1582. version.

  1583. We're

  1584. going to

  1585. sing these

  1586. last

  1587. verses,

  1588. 6 through

  1589. to 10.

  1590. Psalm 111,

  1591. page 391,

  1592. verse 10,

  1593. to God's

  1594. praise,

  1595. we stand

  1596. to sing.

  1597. Amen.

  1598. may may

  1599. may

  1600. And if ye so,

1601. And ye words are truth and right,

1602. All is calm and search true,

1603. And thou wilt truth and the brightness

1604. Leve, warm, og, and, and,

1605. And ye, send me the light,

1606. And thou wilt truth and the light,

1607. And thou wilt truth and the light,

1608. He did come and holy his name,

  1609. And reverend is always.

1610. Words of beginning is gone dear,

  1611. To understanding me,

1612. The Lord is calm and through,

1613. Let me send you all day.

  1614. After the benediction,

1615. I'll go to the door to my left.

  1616. We'll close the benediction.

1617. Now may grace, mercy, and peace

1618. From God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

1619. Rest upon and abide with you all

  1620. Now and forevermore.

  1621. Amen.

  1622. Amen.
