  1. Please do turn back to Genesis 17. We'll be looking at verses 9 to 27.

  2. So we've come to the end of this short series in Genesis.

  3. I'll jump back into Genesis at some point in the future,

  4. but Sam Tunnicliffe's going to be preaching next Sunday evening.

  5. We're looking at Genesis 17, verses 9 to 27.

    Genesis 17:9–27

  6. And this chapter has lots of unusual things, doesn't it?

  7. There's a covenant, promises about nations and kings, new names, and circumcision.

  8. Lots of things that seem very distant from our lives.

  9. But this chapter is doing something very important for us.

  10. God is laying out the blueprint for the church.

  11. God has promised his plan of salvation to restore this world.

  12. It is to make a people for himself.

  13. That is the big promise we saw last week.

  14. I will be your God and you will be my people.

  15. That is, God has chosen a people, made a contract, a covenant with that people,

  16. and bound himself to them in that covenant.

  17. Bound himself to be their God and fulfill these promises.

  18. That is what the church is.

  19. We are God's people bound to him.

  20. And here in this passage, God is showing us what this covenant looks like.

  21. What his people will look like.

  22. How God relates to them.

  23. Who they are.

  24. How they function.

  25. How God's promises and salvation comes to that people.

  26. And how we are to hold on to them.

  27. It's a blueprint.

  28. A blueprint.

  29. Of having their own unique relationship with God.

  30. And people can speak of it very much on our own terms.

  31. They might say, you know, I like to think of my relationship with God like this.

  32. This is who I think God is.

  33. And this is how I connect with him.

  34. And it's true, we do have a relationship with him.

  35. But it's not on our terms.

  36. No, God is saying this is what the relationship is to look like.

  37. It's this covenant.

  38. In short, this is the blueprint for what the church is to look like.

  39. This is like the architect's design for God's people.

  40. Because remember, look back to verse 7.

  41. This is an eternal covenant running right up to now, into the future, running throughout our lives.

  42. And in the church today.

  43. We, the church, we are God's people in this covenant.

  44. And this is God telling us, okay, now you are my people.

  45. This is my blueprint.

  46. This is my design for how this covenant will play out.

  47. Which is why, in verse 9, do you see, God begins with, as for you.

  48. Up until now, God has been saying, as for me, what God will do.

  49. As for me, I am God Almighty.

  50. I have made you.

  51. I will be to you.

  52. I will bless you.

  53. That's what God will do.

  54. But now, Abraham, as for you, this is what happens on your side of the contract.

  55. This is what my people will look like.

  56. And how you keep this covenant and stay in it.

  57. These are the blueprints.

  58. Now, follow them.

  59. But remember, this is still gracious.

  60. This is all grace.

  61. This is God providing the plans.

  62. And he's doing this for a doubt-filled and fear-filled Abraham.

  63. For those who are fearful of the future, filled with doubts about, can God really bring any blessing to my life?

  64. And for those just feeling small and weak in a cursed world, well, God says, here are my designs for the church.

  65. For you to be safe in and reassured in and to find real blessing.

  66. And so I want us to look at these blueprints today.

  67. And I want us to see how God's covenant works in our lives.

  68. And the first and very important thing to see is God's covenant has a sign.

  69. God's covenant has a sign.

  70. Look at verse 10.

  71. This is my covenant, which you shall keep between me and you and your offspring after you.

  72. Every male among you shall be circumcised.

  73. You shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins.

  74. And it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you.

  75. So God makes a covenant, a binding contract with Abraham to be his God and to bless him and to make nations come from Abraham and save the world through him.

  76. To finally bring the savior serpent crusher.

  77. But these promises, they don't just stay verbal.

  78. No, God also gives a physical sign to confirm these promises.

  79. This sign is like God's official stamp that God stamps onto Abraham to say,

  80. This promise really is for you.

  81. So you know when you get a stamp in your passport that says you are officially, truly allowed into this country.

  82. Well, this sign is like God saying you are officially, truly my people.

  83. It's like in word God says, I will be your God.

  84. But when someone has this sign, God is saying, I will be your God.

  85. Abraham, if you have any fears about anything that I'm doing in this world for you, here is a sign showing you.

  86. So this sign, it's not just an extra visual aid.

  87. No, it is inseparably tied to the covenant.

  88. In fact, it is so tied that it is called the covenant.

  89. Verse 10.

  90. This is my covenant.

  91. The sign.

  92. To have this sign is to be in the covenant.

  93. Officially stamping it on Abraham.

  94. And so this sign is key to understanding what God is doing among his people.

  95. How this covenant works.

  96. And what is the sign?

  97. Let's get the awkwardness out of the way, shall we?

  98. The sign is circumcision.

  99. And let's get more awkwardness out of the way.

  100. If you don't know what circumcision is,

  101. circumcision is when you cut off some of the flesh,

  102. some of the unclean skin,

  103. from the end of a male's reproductive part.

  104. And usually a knife or a sharp stone was used to do that.

  105. And it was to be done to every baby boy in this covenant,

  106. eight days old.

  107. Do you see that in verse 12?

  108. That's what circumcision is.

  109. It's the cutting off of flesh.

  110. And there's a reason I wanted to preach Genesis in the evening service.

  111. Because in the morning,

  112. preachers have to make a kid's sheet for sermons.

  113. And I don't want to make that.

  114. And no one wants to color that in.

  115. But with that out of the way,

  116. it is worth asking,

  117. why this sign of everything?

  118. Why not cut off anything else?

  119. Well, although it is a bit awkward,

  120. this sign is actually really appropriate to the covenant.

  121. This sign gives clarity to how exactly God is making a people,

  122. bringing blessing,

  123. how he is saving this world.

  124. So just think of how a sign points to a reality.

  125. So you know when you're on the motorway

  126. and you see a sign,

  127. a blue sign on the motorway,

  128. and it's got a picture on it,

  129. and you see a knife and a fork symbol.

  130. That's a sign saying,

  131. service station one mile ahead.

  132. And that is an appropriate sign

  133. because that knife and fork

  134. accurately tells you

  135. about the reality up ahead.

  136. There is food and rest

  137. and knives and forks up ahead,

  138. one mile.

  139. A picture of a deer on that road sign

  140. wouldn't tell you that.

  141. No, the sign tells you about the reality.

  142. Well, this sign, circumcision,

  143. tells you about the deeper reality

  144. of God's promise in the covenant.

  145. But what is circumcision telling us?

  146. Why has God given this sign of all things?

  147. Well, I want us to see a few things.

  148. First, circumcision physically marks out

  149. who God's people are.

  150. That's why verse 14,

  151. God says anyone who does not have this sign

  152. will be cut off from God's people.

  153. This is how God marks out the boundary

  154. of his people,

  155. like the stamp in the passport.

  156. Those aren't my people over there,

  157. but you, with this sign,

  158. you are my people.

  159. So I don't treat you like

  160. I treat everyone else out there.

  161. No, my covenant and blessing

  162. and all the benefits are with you.

  163. And likewise, as for you,

  164. you mustn't act like everyone else out there,

  165. like the nations out there.

  166. No, you have special obligations to me now.

  167. You are to walk before me

  168. and believe these promises.

  169. This sign physically marks out

  170. God's people as separate

  171. and holy to the Lord.

  172. And also, circumcision,

  173. it not only shows who God's people are,

  174. but how God's people are made right with God.

  175. By cutting off the flesh,

  176. God is showing that salvation

  177. will not happen by your flesh.

  178. It's not your strength.

  179. It's not from you,

  180. but salvation will only come from God.

  181. That's partly why it happens at eight days old.

  182. It's not about the child

  183. earning righteousness before God.

  184. It's just graciously given to the helpless,

  185. which says something about how covenant signs work.

  186. They are not primarily about us

  187. declaring our faith to God.

  188. They are God declaring his faithfulness to us.

  189. And there's another significance in circumcision.

  190. There's a reason it's in that place,

  191. because that is where the promise of offspring and nations will come from.

  192. God is saying to Abraham,

  193. the future of your family

  194. and the future of the world,

  195. it is all under my control.

  196. And the Savior will arrive.

  197. But it won't happen through Hagar.

  198. It will happen through 89-year-old Sarai,

  199. which is why in verse 15,

  200. Sarai is renamed Sarah.

  201. Sarai literally means my princess.

  202. But now she is being renamed Sarah,

  203. which just means princess.

  204. So she was princess to King Abraham,

  205. but now she's going to be princess

  206. to another greater king,

  207. a king who will come from her womb.

  208. So they don't realize it,

  209. but this is God's sign saying,

  210. I am going to bring Christ,

  211. even if it takes a miracle birth.

  212. This sign is about guaranteeing the impossible.

  213. But circumcision shows something else,

  214. something spiritual.

  215. Because circumcision cuts off the unclean parts of the body,

  216. this shows what God will do to his people's hearts.

  217. He will cut off the unclean and the sinful,

  218. circumcise our hearts,

  219. and make them new.

  220. So just like in surgery,

  221. you cut off the infected bits,

  222. and you save the patient, don't you?

  223. Well, God is saving his people

  224. by circumcising our hearts,

  225. which is why boys were to be circumcised

  226. on the eighth day of all days.

  227. Creation happened in how many days?

  228. Seven.

  229. But what does day eight signify?

  230. New creation.

  231. God is marking out his people

  232. and saying,

  233. you are my new creation with new hearts.

  234. And so circumcision is not a random sign.

  235. No, it is really appropriate.

  236. God is saying,

  237. the great reality of this sign,

  238. being my people,

  239. being righteous,

  240. not because of your flesh,

  241. but because of me,

  242. the promise of offspring,

  243. and a saviour,

  244. and circumcised hearts,

  245. that promise really is for you.

  246. It belongs to you.

  247. You are in this covenant,

  248. and I am bound to you.

  249. But there is one other thing circumcision shows.

  250. This sign is very appropriate

  251. because it shows

  252. all this will happen

  253. through judgment,

  254. by flesh being cut off,

  255. and by blood being shed.

  256. This is a sign

  257. pointing to the greater reality

  258. of the crucifixion.

  259. In fact,

  260. Colossians 2

  261. even calls

  262. the death of Christ

  263. the circumcision of Christ.

  264. Because how is the uncleanness

  265. of our hearts taken away?

  266. by our sin

  267. being placed on one man

  268. and him

  269. being cut off

  270. in his flesh.

  271. And how is the curse

  272. of this world undone?

  273. By the curse

  274. falling on one man.

  275. And how does God

  276. create a new people,

  277. a new creation,

  278. cleansed and made right with God?

  279. It is by blood

  280. being shed.

  281. flesh

  282. torn apart.

  283. Nails

  284. driven

  285. through flesh.

  286. It is through

  287. judgment.

  288. And from that,

  289. blessing

  290. gets poured out

  291. into the world.

  292. This is how God

  293. claims a people

  294. and claims

  295. nations for himself.

  296. We are seeing here

  297. the blueprint

  298. for how the church

  299. is made.

  300. Christ

  301. claims his church

  302. through his flesh

  303. being cut off.

  304. And so as the church,

  305. we,

  306. we have a remarkable

  307. privilege.

  308. God has separated us

  309. from the world

  310. and he says to us,

  311. I treat you differently

  312. to how I treat

  313. anyone else.

  314. You are mine.

  315. You are my covenant

  316. people.

  317. You are holy

  318. to me

  319. and I've

  320. bound myself

  321. to you

  322. through the blood

  323. of Christ

  324. and I will

  325. bless you

  326. in my son.

  327. And so this sign,

  328. it isn't just a

  329. helpful illustration

  330. for Abraham.

  331. No,

  332. this sign

  333. is God

  334. declaring

  335. centuries

  336. before the reality,

  337. Abraham,

  338. the saviour

  339. is coming

  340. and he's

  341. already yours

  342. now.

  343. Which goes

  344. to show

  345. this is how

  346. believers were

  347. saved in the

  348. Old Testament.

  349. Although Christ

  350. wasn't born yet

  351. to this point,

  352. they still

  353. had faith

  354. in him

  355. because they

  356. had faith

  357. in the promise

  358. that he will

  359. come.

  360. You can think

  361. of the story

  362. of the Bible

  363. like a tapestry

  364. and from Genesis

  365. onwards,

  366. we see

  367. the tapestry

  368. slowly unfolding.

  369. We are

  370. seeing it

  371. unfold

  372. bit by

  373. bit.

  374. In a way,

  375. it's already

  376. written,

  377. it's already

  378. been made,

  379. God's written

  380. it,

  381. but we're

  382. just seeing

  383. it unfold.

  384. And when we

  385. get to the

  386. New Testament,

  387. it unfolds

  388. finally in all

  389. its glory

  390. to reveal

  391. Jesus Christ.

  392. all the

  393. threads of

  394. the tapestry

  395. that they

  396. all lead

  397. up to him

  398. and are

  399. connected to

  400. him.

  401. And so if

  402. you hold

  403. on to one

  404. thread in

  405. the Old

  406. Testament,

  407. you are

  408. actually

  409. holding on

  410. to Christ.

  411. Well,

  412. that is what's

  413. going on here.

  414. The promise

  415. and covenant

  416. and sign

  417. that this is

  418. the thread

  419. Abraham is

  420. holding on

  421. to.

  422. He's to hold

  423. on to it

  424. and to believe

  425. it.

  426. We look

  427. back to

  428. Christ and

  429. Abraham looks

  430. forward,

  431. but it's

  432. all the same

  433. saviour,

  434. the same

  435. reality.

  436. So we are

  437. looking at

  438. the early

  439. blueprints

  440. of the

  441. church and

  442. how this

  443. covenant

  444. works.

  445. God's

  446. covenant

  447. has a

  448. sign.

  449. But we

  450. also see,

  451. it's my

  452. second point,

  453. God's

  454. covenant

  455. is with

  456. families.

  457. God's

  458. covenant

  459. is with

  460. families.

  461. So if

  462. God marks

  463. out his

  464. people with

  465. this sign,

  466. who does

  467. he mark

  468. out?

  469. Verse 12,

  470. Abraham is

  471. to be

  472. circumcised

  473. and every

  474. boy,

  475. eight days

  476. old in

  477. his household,

  478. his children.

  479. And that

  480. is because

  481. who is

  482. this covenant

  483. with?

  484. Who is

  485. God making

  486. these promises

  487. to?

  488. It's to

  489. Abraham

  490. and his

  491. offspring.

  492. God's

  493. covenant

  494. is with

  495. families.

  496. God

  497. says,

  498. I will

  499. be your

  500. God and

  501. you will

  502. be my

  503. people to

  504. believers

  505. and their

  506. children.

  507. This is

  508. how the

  509. covenant

  510. works.

  511. God

  512. works

  513. through

  514. families,

  515. which is

  516. why the

  517. sign is

  518. to be

  519. for the

  520. males

  521. of the

  522. household.

  523. So men

  524. are the

  525. heads and

  526. the

  527. representatives

  528. of their

  529. families.

  530. And so

  531. when God

  532. stamps his

  533. promise on

  534. them,

  535. God is

  536. claiming that

  537. person and

  538. their families.

  539. Which is

  540. also why even

  541. servants were

  542. included.

  543. Did you see

  544. that in

  545. verse 12?

  546. Every male

  547. throughout your

  548. generations,

  549. whether born

  550. in your

  551. house or

  552. bought with

  553. your money

  554. from any

  555. foreigner who

  556. is not of

  557. your

  558. offspring.

  559. And this

  560. goes against

  561. our modern

  562. individualistic

  563. instincts,

  564. doesn't it?

  565. We can be

  566. quick to

  567. think,

  568. well,

  569. salvation is

  570. just about

  571. me and

  572. God and

  573. that's it.

  574. And yes,

  575. of course,

  576. we relate to

  577. God personally

  578. and God

  579. saves

  580. individuals.

  581. But as we

  582. see these

  583. blueprints,

  584. God's plan

  585. for his

  586. people,

  587. it's far

  588. bigger than

  589. that.

  590. God saves

  591. in covenant

  592. and that

  593. covenant is

  594. with families

  595. and that

  596. includes

  597. children.

  598. even before

  599. they could

  600. talk or

  601. even

  602. understand

  603. these

  604. promises,

  605. yet God

  606. sees the

  607. children of

  608. believers

  609. differently.

  610. There is

  611. something

  612. different for

  613. those children

  614. than the

  615. children of

  616. the pagan

  617. families in

  618. Canaan.

  619. God says to

  620. that eight-day-old

  621. newborn,

  622. these promises

  623. are for you,

  624. little child,

  625. and I am

  626. marking you

  627. out as

  628. mine.

  629. Now,

  630. that doesn't

  631. mean they are

  632. magically instantly

  633. saved as

  634. soon as the

  635. blade hit the

  636. flesh.

  637. No, it

  638. still requires

  639. faith.

  640. It requires

  641. God's people

  642. to believe

  643. this sign

  644. and trust

  645. the promises

  646. God has

  647. made.

  648. It still

  649. requires

  650. surrender and

  651. holding on to

  652. that tapestry

  653. thread for

  654. adults and

  655. children.

  656. Yet God

  657. graciously says

  658. this covenant

  659. is with you

  660. and your

  661. family.

  662. the promises

  663. are for

  664. all of you.

  665. You're born

  666. into this

  667. covenant and

  668. now by

  669. faith never

  670. leave it.

  671. And so it

  672. is possible

  673. to break

  674. this covenant

  675. with unbelief.

  676. That's why

  677. verse 14

  678. speaks of

  679. people being

  680. cut off from

  681. the covenant.

  682. We see that

  683. with Esau,

  684. we see that

  685. with rebellious

  686. Israel.

  687. Ishmael.

  688. We even see

  689. it here with

  690. Ishmael.

  691. Look at verse

  692. 25.

  693. Ishmael is

  694. circumcised.

  695. He's in the

  696. covenant.

  697. Yet, look back

  698. to verse 21.

  699. But I will

  700. establish my

  701. covenant with

  702. Isaac.

  703. It is possible

  704. to be in the

  705. covenant but not

  706. actually of the

  707. covenant.

  708. You can be

  709. circumcised in

  710. the flesh but

  711. not in the

  712. heart.

  713. And so we

  714. see in this

  715. blueprint what

  716. the church is

  717. like.

  718. The church is

  719. going to be a

  720. mix of Ishmael's

  721. and Isaac's.

  722. God's people,

  723. it's never

  724. purely only

  725. belief this

  726. side of heaven.

  727. No, it's

  728. mixed.

  729. Some won't

  730. believe the

  731. promises given

  732. to them.

  733. And sadly,

  734. we've seen that,

  735. haven't we?

  736. People walking

  737. away from the

  738. faith.

  739. both adults

  740. and children.

  741. It's a painful

  742. breaking of the

  743. covenant.

  744. But that isn't

  745. because God's

  746. promises have

  747. failed.

  748. It's because they

  749. haven't been

  750. believed.

  751. But this isn't

  752. to fill us with

  753. doubt or to

  754. make us worry

  755. about our

  756. children.

  757. No, this is

  758. here to help us

  759. understand the

  760. nature of the

  761. church and make

  762. us realize what

  763. we need to do.

  764. God has given

  765. us promises and

  766. we must believe

  767. them.

  768. As the church,

  769. we are in this

  770. covenant.

  771. We have the

  772. promises and now

  773. we must never,

  774. ever leave.

  775. Because the

  776. blessing is only

  777. found here.

  778. This is the

  779. only place we

  780. can be sure God

  781. is my God and

  782. I am cleansed by

  783. the blood of

  784. Jesus.

  785. us.

  786. And like

  787. Abraham, we

  788. need to recognize

  789. the sign God

  790. has given us

  791. and believe it.

  792. But what is the

  793. sign for us?

  794. If this is the

  795. blueprint of the

  796. church, if this

  797. is the same

  798. eternal covenant

  799. we're in now,

  800. what is the sign

  801. we have?

  802. Well, it's no

  803. longer circumcision.

  804. God's covenant

  805. sign is now

  806. baptism.

  807. That's my third

  808. and final point

  809. today.

  810. God's covenant

  811. sign is now

  812. baptism.

  813. Listen to these

  814. words from

  815. Colossians 2.

  816. In Christ

  817. also you

  818. were circumcised

  819. with a

  820. circumcision

  821. made without

  822. hands by

  823. putting off

  824. the body of

  825. the flesh

  826. by the

  827. circumcision of

  828. Christ,

  829. having been

  830. buried with

  831. him in

  832. baptism.

  833. If Christ's

  834. death is the

  835. true circumcision,

  836. the reality

  837. Abraham's

  838. circumcision was

  839. pointing forward

  840. to, well

  841. baptism is now

  842. the new sign

  843. that points

  844. back to that

  845. same reality.

  846. And it works

  847. with the same

  848. blueprints.

  849. It is in

  850. baptism that

  851. God marks out

  852. his people.

  853. It is his

  854. covenant sign

  855. to separate his

  856. holy people from

  857. the world.

  858. God's sign

  859. pointing us

  860. back to the

  861. deeper spiritual

  862. reality.

  863. In baptism

  864. God declares

  865. to us

  866. you are

  867. washed by the

  868. blood of

  869. Christ.

  870. You have

  871. died with

  872. him and

  873. now you

  874. have my

  875. promised

  876. spirit poured

  877. out on you.

  878. And so

  879. baptism is

  880. fundamentally

  881. not about

  882. us declaring

  883. our faith to

  884. God or to

  885. the world.

  886. No, baptism

  887. is God

  888. declaring his

  889. faithfulness to

  890. us.

  891. I am your

  892. God.

  893. It is his

  894. official stamp

  895. on us

  896. showing these

  897. promises really

  898. are for you.

  899. Now always

  900. trust me and

  901. don't go

  902. anywhere else.

  903. God knows

  904. we have

  905. doubts.

  906. And so

  907. God says

  908. look to your

  909. baptism.

  910. if you

  911. have doubts

  912. and fears

  913. and you

  914. feel wobbly

  915. in the

  916. faith and

  917. you wonder

  918. is this

  919. really for

  920. me?

  921. And it

  922. is very

  923. easy to

  924. look into

  925. ourselves and

  926. see our

  927. sin and

  928. our weakness

  929. and to

  930. doubt

  931. everything.

  932. Well if

  933. that's you

  934. that's exactly

  935. what Abraham

  936. went through.

  937. But God

  938. says when you

  939. have those

  940. doubts don't

  941. look in

  942. look out.

  943. Look at

  944. the sign

  945. God has

  946. given you.

  947. in your

  948. baptism

  949. God says

  950. I am

  951. your

  952. God

  953. and with

  954. me you

  955. may have

  956. wobbles

  957. but I

  958. will never

  959. let you

  960. fall.

  961. But let's

  962. also address

  963. the question

  964. that may be

  965. on your

  966. mind.

  967. If this

  968. is how the

  969. covenant

  970. works and

  971. this is how

  972. God deals

  973. with his

  974. people and

  975. this is the

  976. blueprint for

  977. the church

  978. then that

  979. means this

  980. eternal

  981. covenant is

  982. still for

  983. us and

  984. for our

  985. children.

  986. God is

  987. still working

  988. through families

  989. today.

  990. That is why

  991. at Pentecost

  992. Peter preaches

  993. the promises

  994. for you

  995. and for

  996. your children

  997. and all

  998. who are

  999. far off.

  1000. It's why

  1001. Paul says

  1002. in 1

  1003. Corinthians

  1004. when a

  1005. believing

  1006. parent has

  1007. a child

  1008. that child

  1009. is holy.

  1010. Our

  1011. children

  1012. belong to

  1013. the covenant

  1014. they are

  1015. born into

  1016. it and

  1017. God says

  1018. they are

  1019. not like

  1020. other

  1021. children to

  1022. me.

  1023. No,

  1024. they are

  1025. mine and

  1026. my promises

  1027. belong to

  1028. them.

  1029. And if

  1030. this covenant

  1031. is for

  1032. them,

  1033. so is the

  1034. sign.

  1035. The covenant

  1036. and the

  1037. sign go

  1038. together.

  1039. And that

  1040. is why we

  1041. baptise

  1042. children.

  1043. That is

  1044. why we

  1045. raise them

  1046. saying,

  1047. you belong

  1048. to God.

  1049. You are

  1050. not your

  1051. own,

  1052. little one,

  1053. but you

  1054. have been

  1055. bought with

  1056. a price.

  1057. You can

  1058. pray,

  1059. our

  1060. heavenly

  1061. father,

  1062. my love,

  1063. he is

  1064. your

  1065. heavenly

  1066. father.

  1067. You really

  1068. can sing,

  1069. Jesus died

  1070. to take

  1071. my sin

  1072. away.

  1073. Jesus

  1074. loves me,

  1075. this I

  1076. know,

  1077. for the

  1078. Bible

  1079. tells me

  1080. so,

  1081. and my

  1082. baptism

  1083. tells me

  1084. so.

  1085. God is

  1086. even more

  1087. gracious than

  1088. we realise.

  1089. His grace

  1090. is for

  1091. you and

  1092. your

  1093. children.

  1094. Through

  1095. every trial,

  1096. his grace

  1097. surrounds your

  1098. whole family.

  1099. And so

  1100. children,

  1101. if you have

  1102. been baptised,

  1103. please know

  1104. that.

  1105. God has

  1106. given you a

  1107. sign,

  1108. baptism.

  1109. And that

  1110. sign is

  1111. God saying

  1112. to you,

  1113. you belong

  1114. to me.

  1115. You are

  1116. already in

  1117. this covenant,

  1118. which means

  1119. you are to

  1120. believe the

  1121. promises God

  1122. has given

  1123. you.

  1124. Like Ishmael,

  1125. growing up in

  1126. a Christian

  1127. home, it

  1128. doesn't

  1129. automatically

  1130. save you,

  1131. but it does

  1132. mean you are

  1133. in this

  1134. covenant.

  1135. And God

  1136. has given

  1137. you promises,

  1138. promises to

  1139. love you and

  1140. bless you and

  1141. save you through

  1142. Jesus.

  1143. Those promises

  1144. are yours,

  1145. you must

  1146. believe them.

  1147. And that

  1148. goes for

  1149. every adult

  1150. as well.

  1151. Now we

  1152. are in this

  1153. covenant,

  1154. we mustn't

  1155. go anywhere

  1156. else.

  1157. Because this

  1158. is where we

  1159. have God and

  1160. this is the

  1161. only way to

  1162. find blessing,

  1163. to find true

  1164. happiness and

  1165. eternal life.

  1166. God has

  1167. given us

  1168. this gracious

  1169. sign, so

  1170. let's not

  1171. ignore it.

  1172. Let's not

  1173. forget it.

  1174. but let's

  1175. believe it.

  1176. He has

  1177. marked us

  1178. out, his

  1179. promises are

  1180. for us, and

  1181. as his church

  1182. incredibly we

  1183. can say he

  1184. is our God

  1185. and we are

  1186. his people.

  1187. Let's pray.
