  1. Well, welcome to Be on Sunday, a podcast that's linked to the

  2. preaching ministry of Leamington EMC.

  3. I'm Pastor Jonah Chitty. I'm joined today with by Pastor

  4. Joe Penner and one of our youth leaders, Joel Geese Brick, how

  5. are you guys doing today? Doing good.

  6. Awesome. I have a very important question

  7. this this afternoon for both of you or only one of you.

  8. It's fall here in Ontario. It's getting a little crisp.

  9. What's your go to coffee beverage at the Starbucks right

  10. now at. The Starbucks Joe, you go first.

  11. It was just black coffee until I tried what a treat.

  12. Vanilla latte. The other that was pretty good.

  13. So wait, how long you been drinking coffee?

  14. Since 17, so probably 10 years now.

  15. And you? Just now tried the vanilla

  16. latte. Applause.

  17. Applause from the from the audience.

  18. It's good you're branching out. I like it.

  19. Joe, what's your fall drink of choice?

  20. Feel like I'm like able to give like the white girl answer.

  21. You are pumpkin spice lot. Yes, pumpkin spice.

  22. It is so good. That's that's awesome.

  23. Mine would just be, you know, Americano with one cream because

  24. I'm American and I just like black coffee with cream.

  25. It's fine. Anyway, I thought that was

  26. funny. Just I just wanted to put Joe

  27. out here, but on the. I eat that, I eat gravel when

  28. I'm eating it, so just so offset how?

  29. How manly you are. You like that's good.

  30. No, that's really, really good. So you might be wondering why

  31. and where pastor Pastor Jake is. Well, Pastor Jake is serving in

  32. Alberta. He's out in picture Butte, AB

  33. this week. He's going to be preaching a

  34. series of messages there at their church.

  35. And so we thought, why not bring Joel in because he had the

  36. opportunity to speak to our congregation on family night.

  37. From what song was it Joel? Psalm 73.

  38. Psalm 73 that's right, very good message.

  39. If you haven't had a chance to listen to that, we did put that

  40. up on on the podcast app a couple of episodes back.

  41. So feel free to go back and listen to that.

  42. You'll be benefited by hearing the word preached, but also it

  43. will help with our conversation today.

  44. So Joel, why don't you go ahead and just give us a little bit of

  45. for those who haven't heard or maybe those who did hear and

  46. need a recap, give us a short recap.

  47. Yeah, so Psalm 73 being transparent, you gave me the

  48. opportunity to choose what Solomon wanted.

  49. So I chose the one that I related to most.

  50. So that's why I talked about Psalm 73 and it talks about

  51. finding contentment even when there's unbelievers, when the

  52. wicked seem to be thriving. And so that was my main point is

  53. how do we find contentment in God when we see unbelievers

  54. thriving? And my main points there were

  55. connected to the illustration I used of climbing a mountain.

  56. And so the main points were that we have to focus on the path.

  57. We focus on the word of God. We don't look aside to all the

  58. distractions, all the big houses and fancy cars of the neighbors,

  59. but we focus on the word of God. Then we remain mindful of the

  60. dangers. We know that there's certain

  61. things that we can be tempted by.

  62. We know that if we only focus on ourselves, it leads to being

  63. selfish, it leads to not caring about others.

  64. We don't see the outside world. And then finally, the fact of

  65. seeking refuge in God as mountain climbers seek refuge in

  66. big rocks. I use the analogy of we seek

  67. refuge in the Rock of Ages and seeing God is our strength, our

  68. sustainer and our Savior. And yeah, I just really love

  69. that last portion of the Psalm 73 is my heart and my flesh may

  70. fail, but God is this my strength and portion forever.

  71. And so if we focus on that, then it's hard to say, OK, I don't

  72. have the biggest house, I don't have the cows in the back that

  73. I'd like maybe, but. Are you planning on doing some

  74. homesteading? I would love to, but the bylaws

  75. say no. Bummer.

  76. You just have to move out of where you are.

  77. Yeah, you know, find, find some open property.

  78. What? That's hard to do here.

  79. Yeah, yeah. That's good.

  80. Yeah. So that was a.

  81. That's a basic summary of it. And what would it be like the

  82. key take away that you would take just being content?

  83. Is that what it was? Yeah, the key take away was

  84. because God is faithful, we should find contentment in him.

  85. So God has proven himself faithful.

  86. We see it everywhere in the Bible.

  87. It's hard to see you when you're in the areas that you don't want

  88. to be in, when you're sick, when you're your income is low.

  89. But God has proven faithful. So yeah.

  90. Yeah. Yeah, that's good that this

  91. Psalm has always stuck out to me because of the honesty of the

  92. soleness. Like, I mean, he sort of admits

  93. like, man, I almost stumbled. Like I almost like I almost went

  94. beyond the point of no return. You know, it sort of seems like

  95. he's saying it's like, but it's and I loved how you emphasized

  96. this in your sermon that it's like, because I'm taking my eyes

  97. off of Christ and I'm putting them on the things of this

  98. world. And isn't that exactly what we

  99. do all the time, right? Like when I realize that my

  100. priorities are out of line and out of whack, it's because I've

  101. stopped looking to Christ, I've stopped looking to God.

  102. I've stopped trusting in him and I've started to try to find

  103. fulfillment in the things of this world.

  104. And like, I'm looking at everybody else around me going,

  105. it's like, well, they have that, they have this and whatever,

  106. making all these comparisons. And it's like, well, maybe my

  107. heart recognizing that my heart's in the wrong place,

  108. right? That God has been faithful and

  109. he is going to take care of us. And I feel like that does tie in

  110. perfectly with where our scripture memory, you know, was,

  111. was at in the Sermon on the Mount a few weeks back with look

  112. at the birds of the field. Look like, look at the lilies.

  113. Look, look at all these things. It's like God is taking care of

  114. these things. Like, do you not trust that he's

  115. going to take care of you? Look at you putting these plugs

  116. in for like scripture memory and the Bible reading plan.

  117. Just like seamless, you're becoming a professional.

  118. Tie it all together. Oh, I forgot to say, Joel, we'll

  119. get back to. I do want to like before we get

  120. you out of here, like before we let you go.

  121. That's a terrible way to go about that.

  122. I do want you to share a little bit about what you're

  123. podcasting. We can do that in just a few

  124. minutes, though. Joel is a pro at podcasting.

  125. Well, so, yeah, I know you're going to be humble and all that

  126. stuff and let somebody give you a compliment.

  127. It's fine. Your your illustration about

  128. mountain climbing and keeping our eye on the path.

  129. I think Pastor Jake said this before, but like Pastor Jake's,

  130. he likes to ride motorcycles. Or he did.

  131. And one of the things he's brought this up several times to

  132. us is like, you know, you never look anywhere but where you want

  133. to go when you're riding a motorcycle, it's important for

  134. you to not look around. And I, I, I used to ride

  135. mountain bikes too. And like the, the trail can get

  136. really, really dangerous at times.

  137. But if you keep your, but if you start to look at it like down at

  138. your feet or right in front of your wheel, you will fall almost

  139. every single time. And like, if you, but if you

  140. keep your eye out there on where you're going, where you're going

  141. want to want to go. And in this case with the

  142. psalmist, if you keep your eye on Christ or in the own God,

  143. you're much more like safe. You're going to get where you

  144. want to go. Yeah, keeping your eyes on that.

  145. So I think it's a really helpful illustration.

  146. Yeah, I think Pastor Jake used the illustration of Rd. signs

  147. two weeks prior, and then Pastor Joe used it the week before.

  148. And I was like, well, they all beat this horse, so I'm going to

  149. hit it again. But yeah, it's such a good

  150. illustration of, I'm just kidding, it wasn't beating a

  151. dead horse, but it's such a good illustration of the path that we

  152. walk as Christians. Yeah, no, no, no blowing the

  153. horn through the tunnel, right, right.

  154. Use that in your in your sermon as well.

  155. The second I saw that sign, I said that's going in the

  156. devotion. Yeah, because what does it make

  157. you want to do? It makes you want to do that

  158. things like, you know, no one knew that it was something to do

  159. until you until you see it. So it was impactful for sure.

  160. Yeah. And I did confess that that is

  161. the reason I'm probably the reason that they made that sign,

  162. because every time we go to the mountains, we go up to Cates

  163. Cove and the road up to Cates Cove, there are like 3 tunnels,

  164. maybe at least two. And we blow the horn in the

  165. evening, All of them. I can honestly say I've never

  166. like, I mean, we've gone to get, we've gone to Tennessee a number

  167. of times over the years and I have never even thought of it.

  168. Like you should do it. Maybe it's only if there's no

  169. sign. If there's a sign, don't do it.

  170. We want to make don't break the rules but.

  171. Well, like, what is silly infraction?

  172. Can you imagine like getting pulled over and be like, yeah,

  173. you honk the horn man 175 bucks. You saw the sign, right?

  174. That's funny. Yeah, I liked you were be

  175. mindful of the dangers point was something that stood out to me

  176. whenever whenever you were you were preaching through it.

  177. And I don't know if you said this, but I wrote this down as

  178. something that stood out for me was like the most dangerous

  179. thing of all is our unrepentant sin.

  180. And like thinking about that, and I think Joe even mentioned

  181. something like that and his sermon may be the same morning

  182. about like keeping sin secret is very dangerous.

  183. And it was either that week or the week prior that you said

  184. that. But like I, I think that's

  185. something that we need to all keep in mind is like unrepentant

  186. sin in our life is, is going to keep us from staying on the

  187. path. It's going to keep us.

  188. There's going to be a barrier or a wall between US and the Lord.

  189. And so we need to do that. I thought that was really good.

  190. And then and then in that too, at the, I wrote Christ as our

  191. sustainer, our strength and our Savior.

  192. But yeah, it was just really helpful.

  193. I really appreciated the devotion.

  194. Yeah. How did you, how did you feel?

  195. You know, it was like you, you preached last of all here at

  196. LEMC and I think you've have you done it before then as well.

  197. I did, I think once or twice. OK, Yeah, I think one other

  198. sermon is devotional or something like that.

  199. OK. Yeah, yeah.

  200. So obviously you're you're, you're not getting a lot of

  201. reps. So how does it feel you?

  202. Know well he does get reps we'll say yeah.

  203. Because. He's teaching our youth, which

  204. is something that is important to Joe and I because we both

  205. have children in the youth department.

  206. So we're grateful for you and the work you guys do with the

  207. junior youth. I mean, my daughter, we came

  208. from a pretty, a pretty healthy church and she gave you guys one

  209. of the best compliments ever. She said, she said, Kyle and

  210. Joel, the teaching that they do is way more deep than what we

  211. had at the old church. And I was like, that's a big,

  212. that's a big compliment. And so, yeah, we're grateful for

  213. you. But you're.

  214. So he's getting reps, but in front of the congregation.

  215. I know where you're going there. So yeah, yeah.

  216. So how did you feel? Yeah, I guess it's a bit

  217. different than 11 and 12 year olds a but.

  218. Not much. Actually, I don't know.

  219. They they ask questions sometimes in you so, but no, I

  220. was telling Jonah before we turn the mics on that I normally I

  221. like sticking to shorter amounts of time because I tell myself if

  222. I can't say it in 10 minutes, then I shouldn't be saying it

  223. for 30 minutes. So to speak, Glory.

  224. Praise the Lord, but so the 20 minute mark was kind of a

  225. hindrance this time, and I wish I would have expanded on the

  226. explanation parts of it a bit more.

  227. I didn't do myself favors by any favors by reading the whole

  228. chapter of Psalm 73, but I like that chapter so much I didn't

  229. want to take anything out, so I wanted to read the whole thing.

  230. Yeah, I I guess what I would have done differently would be

  231. to expand a bit more on that explanation side, maybe shorten

  232. the illustrations slightly, being less wordy.

  233. But yeah, that's kind of where I felt.

  234. Yeah, it, I mean, it's tough, right?

  235. Like Psalm 73 is a, is a pretty big chapter.

  236. Yeah. And so, you know, here here at

  237. LMC, it's like we we try the best we can to do like

  238. expositional preaching, which is expositional preaching is

  239. taking, you know, reading a passage of Scripture, taking the

  240. meaning, the intended meaning from the author of that passage

  241. and then sort of explaining it and applying it to our day.

  242. And so, yeah, when you go through a whole chapter like

  243. that's, that's a lot, right? That's yeah, that's a lot to get

  244. through. But you did a good job and you

  245. focused on, you know, the high points.

  246. You obviously can't get into like every single thing that's

  247. in there, but you, you got through the high points.

  248. With Psalms, though, I think like, it's important.

  249. I, I think I, I, I'm not going to knock you at all for reading

  250. the whole chapter because I think like, we're not, we're not

  251. going back to Psalm 73 anytime soon.

  252. And so it's important for us to know like the whole context that

  253. there are, they're meant to be read at one time, with the

  254. exception of maybe 119. It would take us a while to do

  255. that. Maybe 1-19, something we should

  256. just read on a Sunday night, Just spend the whole time

  257. reading the whole Psalm because it's so beneficial.

  258. But yeah, I think that was a great job.

  259. I wouldn't, I wouldn't go back and change that part.

  260. Yeah, I wouldn't take that out. So yeah, one of the things that

  261. I wrote down is I don't know if this was verbatim what you said

  262. or if it was, if it was like my summary of it, but you said what

  263. we focus on determines our contentment.

  264. Yeah, it might have been, but not verbatim, but essentially.

  265. That is like that's really good. Like to think about like like

  266. that was the point that you were drawing out.

  267. And I'm just like, that's a really that's a really

  268. interesting way of saying that, right?

  269. We've already talked about contentment, but it's like if my

  270. focus, you use the example of cars and and a house, right?

  271. It's like if my focus is on that house, that is now the

  272. determining factor of my contentment, right?

  273. And it's like, that's such a good way of saying it.

  274. And I think we all could be convicted by that, that we tend

  275. to focus on the whatever it is, right?

  276. Like whatever The thing is that you're looking at too much and

  277. it begins to shape your outlook of life.

  278. It leads into the part of the First Corinthians where we're in

  279. as well, because if you're only focusing on yourself in the

  280. sense of like, I want to find contentment in whatever I'm

  281. doing. Often times if you use the

  282. example of volunteering at church or being a body of Christ

  283. and part of the body of Christ, it's not always like this joyous

  284. thing that you're going to find this great happiness in it right

  285. away. And so if you only focus on

  286. happiness in that part, well, now you're, you're not going to

  287. want to go serve because, well, it's, it's not very not happy

  288. there. That's a good point.

  289. Like we should find joy, I think in our serving.

  290. But like, if that's the only thing we're getting out of it,

  291. if that's the, if that's what we're going looking for, we're

  292. not going to be content because there are aspects to everything

  293. that you do. That's just some of its

  294. drudgery. Yeah, I guess like is it the

  295. happiness maybe be you should find joy, but maybe not, it's

  296. not always. You're happy, right?

  297. Yeah. Joy doesn't always equate to

  298. happy, right? Yeah.

  299. So like, I'm happy, happy, happy all the time.

  300. No, that's, that's a really good point.

  301. Yeah. Yeah, and this the psalmist goes

  302. to say in verse 16. But when I when I thought of how

  303. to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task.

  304. And I feel like that's sort of like that's sort of the lot that

  305. you're going to get. You know, it's like if if you

  306. look to all these things, it's like, well, where does it end?

  307. Right. Like if, if, if I'm not content

  308. with what I have, that inherently means that once I get

  309. the next thing, it's only a matter of time until I'm no

  310. longer content with that thing. And then contentment becomes

  311. this this nebulous thing that you're chasing.

  312. And yeah, what a wearisome task, right?

  313. So like if we don't find our contentment in Christ and it's

  314. like we're just adding stress and worry and unnecessary.

  315. Yeah, I just discontentment to our lives, right?

  316. And then he says it was weary. So he's like, until I went into

  317. the sanctuary of God, Then I discerned their end.

  318. Then I then I looked at like, OK, well, for all the blessings

  319. and the joy that these people are getting out of the things of

  320. this life, well, what is the end goal of that?

  321. Right? Right.

  322. It's separation from God. And and then he realized, OK,

  323. that's not worth it, you know? Yeah, 1 application.

  324. I guess what I had written down I didn't have time for and that

  325. was it. I, I found it similar to when

  326. you're in a panic attack. When you're in a panic attack,

  327. you just feel like you're going to die.

  328. You feel like everything is crashing at this very moment and

  329. you have to fix everything right now.

  330. And if the same thing, if you're focusing on everything outside,

  331. it seems so far away. It seems like you'll never get

  332. there. But then by like, if you write

  333. out like I'm feeling this way, I feel like I'm going to die right

  334. now. I feel like if I drive my car

  335. this way, I'm like something will happen.

  336. And when you put it on paper, it almost seems silly that you're

  337. scared of that and it can go. You can do the same thing with

  338. thankfulness if you write out the things that you're thankful

  339. for. I know that sounds kind of

  340. cliche. I know that's like a a life

  341. hack, quote UN quote, that I that are kind of corny.

  342. But whether that's writing it out or or verbally praying about

  343. it, I've found at least this is just my experience, that it puts

  344. away some of that discontent and some of that jealousy that I can

  345. find coming up. Like, OK, I have a house.

  346. There's I have, I have shelter, I have food.

  347. As it says in the Bible, we have food and clothing.

  348. We should be OK. But yeah, the practical

  349. application of writing it out, praying for it, this, the simple

  350. things, it just, it helps bring you out of this.

  351. I don't have this. I don't have this.

  352. No, I I'm, I'm good. I'm centered.

  353. Yeah, that's good. That's good.

  354. I don't, I don't think cliches, that cliches are cliches because

  355. they work. Like over time people have

  356. determined that that works. And so like that's, that's

  357. really helpful to think about. I'm just trying to think that is

  358. this what he's doing? Is he riding out?

  359. Like you just made me just like go down a rabbit hole.

  360. Is, is, is this like a song just writing out everything that he

  361. sees that's that's going wrong and then just reminding himself

  362. that contentment comes from the Lord.

  363. I don't know. It seems almost like that

  364. though. It does seem like that it like

  365. it seems like that I mentioned it, the axe prayer model that

  366. like confession, like get this out in the open like it it

  367. doesn't help to hide the way that I feel like I feel this

  368. way. Yeah, at least I'm going to

  369. confess it to God and he can deal with it.

  370. And not in like a proud way, like, oh, I can feel whatever I

  371. want, but like this is a genuine feeling.

  372. Maybe it's a bit exaggerated to get a point across, but yeah,

  373. it's it's writing it out and then saying, yeah, I can't

  374. understand this. So I'm going to go over here to

  375. the word and. Yeah.

  376. Let those, let that go. It's really good.

  377. Yeah, and you, so you mentioned something else towards, I think

  378. this was towards the end of the sermon.

  379. But you know, this idea of like when others hear us, do they

  380. hear grumbling and complaining or do they hear contentment and

  381. gratitude and sort of this idea of like, what do I want to be

  382. known for, right? Like do I want to be known as

  383. the guy that like whenever you hang around with me, it's like I

  384. just Joe's always complaining about something.

  385. He's always grumbling about something.

  386. Joe rejects. What's Joe rejecting today?

  387. And yeah. And it's like, yeah, it's like,

  388. I don't want to be that, right? It's like, I want, I want to be

  389. the person that when people leave a conversation with me,

  390. they feel strengthened and edified and like pointed to

  391. Christ probably would be the, that would be the number one

  392. thing, right? It's like I'm just so turning to

  393. Christ is my default that when people come to me with things,

  394. it's like I helped them to turn to Christ as well.

  395. And so yeah, I that was that was convicting for me, too.

  396. That was again just shying the mirror back on myself and like

  397. this is a problem I have so I'll just write it down.

  398. Yeah, that's so much of preaching, right?

  399. You you realize that like man, I'm preaching to myself more

  400. than I have anybody else. Yeah, I'm sort of convicted by

  401. your statement just just now, like just doing a little bit of

  402. self reflection thinking about am I like, you know, a Debbie

  403. Downer, negative Nancy, whatever, you know, am I am I I

  404. know I was women's names. I'm sorry.

  405. I'm not like doing that but like.

  406. Yeah. Am I, am I that way or am I

  407. happy and put on a happy face or like, you know, a certain air in

  408. public and then I'm that way at home?

  409. That's convicting to think about.

  410. Do I just like unload on my wife and react to my family in a

  411. negative way? So it's convicting to think

  412. about. So.

  413. Thanks for that, Joe, I said. Oh, got punched today.

  414. I was, I was punching myself. So thanks a lot, Joel.

  415. Why don't we? Why don't we invite this guy?

  416. Yeah, that's why I'm here. No, we appreciate you being

  417. faithful to the texts. Yeah, I, I, I'm so glad we have

  418. these opportunities now on Sunday nights to, to give you

  419. guys more reps because we believe that the Lord has gifted

  420. you for teaching. I do anyway.

  421. And it's been helpful for us to hear from you guys and give our,

  422. give our congregation another voice.

  423. That that's, that. Also, just the fact that, I

  424. mean, Kyle spoke, you spoke, Ryan spoke, these guys are,

  425. these are the guys who are like teaching our kids, right?

  426. And so it gives us an opportunity to to see you in

  427. action in some way and some level.

  428. And so I'm, I'm just really, really grateful for for it.

  429. And so, yeah. All right, I'll ask you the same

  430. question I ask everybody after they've preached.

  431. What's one thing or if there's this is the last time you can

  432. talk about Psalm 73 in this context.

  433. So is there something that you wanted to share that you didn't

  434. get a chance to? You would think I would have

  435. been prepared for this question because I have listened to all

  436. your podcasts. I.

  437. Never AM. I forgot I forgot to tell you

  438. about it before SO. No, I don't think so.

  439. Yeah. Yeah.

  440. Like, I've read it before. I read it years ago and like,

  441. seems every time I read it, it's just significant to my life at

  442. that moment. A different part sticks out.

  443. So now I just say read it, reread it, and live it out.

  444. Yeah, verse verse 20, verse 22 in the CSP says I was stupid and

  445. I didn't understand. I was an unthinking animal

  446. towards you. Sometimes I need to like, say

  447. that hey, wife in a text. Hey, Val, this is what I feel

  448. right now. I'm so sorry.

  449. You know, I was stupid, misunderstood.

  450. Anyway, it's just so I don't know if the ESP says stupid or

  451. not. Brutish.

  452. Brutish. Yeah, even.

  453. That's even better. I'm such a brute anyway, yeah,

  454. very, very good choice, very good devotion.

  455. We're grateful for you switching gears a little bit share with us

  456. for like, I don't know, however long you want to you guys have a

  457. podcast called Chat KJP. That's correct.

  458. Sorry, I almost said ChatGPT. That's the point.

  459. That's the point. It gets us thinking.

  460. So are you guys an AI generated podcast or is it just share with

  461. a little bit about that like the concept for your podcast?

  462. We all like, like I mentioned it last episode, that's something I

  463. really enjoy listening to, mainly because you have guests.

  464. So tell us what's going on. Yeah, So strictly AI, No

  465. original thoughts. No, the purpose of it was me and

  466. Kyle. We're both curious people, I

  467. guess, or at least we like to think we are.

  468. And there's so many people that have what you would consider

  469. maybe mundane jobs or jobs that you never heard of before.

  470. And every time I talk to someone, like what's the first

  471. thing you do when you get into a conversation with another guy?

  472. Hey, how's it going? Good weather.

  473. Hey, so how's work been? So right, it sends my news like

  474. what do you do? Yeah, What do you do?

  475. And so essentially that's what the podcast is.

  476. It's just an excuse to ask people that question.

  477. But in in a more serious sense, it's the podcasts of celebrities

  478. and famous people. You, you kind of know what they

  479. do. You, you hear them on every

  480. other podcast, but you don't hear maybe a podcast of a

  481. garbage man or a what are some that we've had?

  482. We had a real estate agent, a butcher.

  483. Aspiring teacher. Aspiring teacher, a maintenance

  484. manager, all those different. A contractor.

  485. We've had a few different ones. Or when you had a pastor on.

  486. We had Pastor Jake on, so that was really good.

  487. So yes, just being curious about what they do and maybe more

  488. importantly, why they do it, what the motivation behind it

  489. is, maybe what are the lessons or what are the qualities that

  490. you need to be able to do something like that.

  491. So it's can be helpful for maybe the younger generation.

  492. I'd like to say I'm still there that that maybe are trying to

  493. figure out what they want to do and maybe it can just be helpful

  494. to anyone that like, oh, I've never thought of that before.

  495. Yeah, to see what, to see what other people do.

  496. It really wasn't for other people, I'll admit it.

  497. It was pretty selfish that we just wanted to talk to people,

  498. and I found that a good excuse. Hey, we have mics, so come talk

  499. to us and we'll put it on. Put it on this.

  500. Thing I think that's a great that's a great motivation

  501. honestly for it because if it's interesting to you it's going to

  502. be interesting to someone else like especially if you're

  503. interested, it's going to make it compelling for sure So yeah,

  504. I've I've been edified by it. This like listening listen to

  505. you guys talk just you 2 it's fun.

  506. I hear more from you then and that's good.

  507. When you have a guest on sometimes, you know, obviously

  508. the guest rules that that segment, but it's just been

  509. really, really good. Yeah.

  510. And I, well, I'm not, I'm not listening to them all, but I've

  511. listened to a number of them and it's like sometimes I'm

  512. surprised, like with the guests too.

  513. I'm like, I know a lot of these people and I'm like, wow, I

  514. would not have expected them to be like, as it sounds like

  515. they're really bubbly, right, or outgoing or sharing their story.

  516. And I'm like, wow, this is like, I, I am totally interested,

  517. right? Because he like, I, I knew this

  518. one guy back in the day and he would ask this question of

  519. people that he would just meet. He would be like, if they would,

  520. there was this one guy that we, he, his job was like a

  521. watermelon delivery driver. I'm like what a random, what a

  522. random job? But it sounds boring.

  523. But the we were in a room and he said, tell me three things about

  524. like the watermelon industry that like most people don't

  525. know. And I thought like, what a great

  526. question. You know, I don't really

  527. remember his answers, but I thought that was a really cool

  528. question because you're right, there's always things about no

  529. matter how mundane the job is, there's things about that job

  530. that are like, you know, most people don't know this, right?

  531. Or it might surprise them or, you know, like there's just

  532. things you don't expect, right? So I think the premise of the

  533. show is really interesting. Yeah.

  534. And like most people, it like talking about themselves and

  535. they don't get that opportunity sometimes.

  536. And not that we're by any means a good podcast.

  537. We're starting out and we're trying to.

  538. No, you're not a good podcast. You're a phenomenal podcast.

  539. It's. Good stuff.

  540. So trying to I think you can by trying to ask good questions

  541. just like that question, it brings out the best in other

  542. people and all of a sudden I know it for myself when people

  543. ask me good questions, I just like, oh, OK, now I can go in on

  544. whatever I'm doing right. I will say if anyone knows a

  545. rodeo clown, that is the the profession I've been super

  546. interested in. So shameless.

  547. You can cut that out if you. Want no, we're not going to cut

  548. anything in this podcast. That's part of our defining

  549. anyway, as part of the the core of our podcast is we don't edit

  550. anything. No, if you're willing to talk to

  551. somebody remotely, I might have the answer for that.

  552. If you can make it like a Zoom call like I know people.

  553. So we'll see if I can think on that one for you.

  554. That's a good connection. Yeah, but it is interesting

  555. because The thing is about like when you may do moot, do a

  556. mundane job, and to you, it feels like you just get used to

  557. it, right? But to other people, it's still

  558. interesting because they don't know, right?

  559. And so, yeah, the idea that you get to share something that most

  560. people don't know about. How does McDonald's make their

  561. burgers you? Know why is the ice cream

  562. machine always broke? Exactly.

  563. That's great. Yeah.

  564. No, just wanted to, I want to just take like let people hear

  565. from you about it. I think it's something our

  566. church members are doing. It may not be church related or

  567. inherently Christian, but I think that I think you give a

  568. Christian worldview in your, in your answers and in the

  569. questions you ask, which make it make it seem it's, it's just

  570. really good. So I appreciate it.

  571. Yeah, I'd preface that saying not all our guests will be of

  572. Christian faith, but me and Kyle both are.

  573. And to that point too, I think what makes it good is the fact

  574. of maybe Kyle and myself how different we are, but the fact

  575. that we're still friends somehow.

  576. Yeah, I'm just kidding. No, it's true.

  577. We're we're different personalities.

  578. And so I think it complements and we work well together in

  579. that regard. For sure.

  580. Well, very cool. So let's chat really quickly

  581. about we had a sermon this last week.

  582. Pastor takes out, which is makes it hard because we're not

  583. hearing from him. So we won't do a recap of his

  584. sermon. But we there was a few things

  585. that we stood out the text to us that his illustrations were

  586. good. Pastor Jake preached a sermon

  587. from First Corinthians chapter 12.

    1 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  588. I believe it was continuing our conversation through that book

  589. and this one specifically on gifts.

  590. I think we're going to be talking about spiritual gifts

  591. for the next several weeks at least.

  592. It comes up here and there, but specifically talking about like

  593. being one body, many parts make up one body, right?

  594. I think his sermon title was, I forget many members, many gifts

  595. in one body from chapter 12, verse 12 to 31.

  596. So, Joe, what stood out as something that you wanted to

  597. chat about? Yeah, there was a number of

  598. them. I took a lot of.

  599. I took a lot of notes, had a lot of questions.

  600. One of the things that I thought of was he used like the idea,

  601. like at the beginning of COVID, when everybody was sort of

  602. stucked and locked at home and you couldn't come to church.

  603. And he was, he used that as an illustration that like you

  604. can't, how do you do church apart from the church, right?

  605. And, and so I, I just sort of wanted to open it up to ask you

  606. guys like I, I don't know if you guys had any experiences during

  607. COVID. I, I remember feeling like, you

  608. know, he shared a story of someone who sort of was like,

  609. oh, it's great. You know, I get to sort of chill

  610. in my bed with a coffee And, and I will say like I've been, I had

  611. the complete opposite. I mean, we were in Louisville at

  612. the time, Louisville, KY. And I just remember feeling like

  613. this is the worst. Like this is awful.

  614. Like, I cannot stand this. Like I, I want to be in the

  615. like, like singing in my house by myself is the worst.

  616. It's lame, It's lame, it's super lame.

  617. And, you know, again, it, it maybe did the job that it was

  618. supposed to do for the time or whatever.

  619. And so we don't need to get into all that stuff, but all the

  620. political side of it. But just for me, it was like, it

  621. was so inadequate. It's like we, I need to be in

  622. the church with the people connecting and singing together

  623. and pouring our hearts to God together and hearing the

  624. preached word and then talking about it afterwards.

  625. And so I, yeah, I hated it. I don't know.

  626. I. Think it was one of the IT was

  627. it was enlightening for for us to see that the church isn't

  628. just what we do, it's who we are right.

  629. Like like you, all the elements were there like I, Joe and I

  630. went to the same church in Louisville.

  631. I was in Louisville as well. All of the same elements were

  632. there. It was on a screen We had they

  633. had the full band like they were social distanced.

  634. They had the band. The problem with that is like

  635. they're recording in the the mixer is mixed for a big room

  636. and not like not a studio. And so the sound quality is not

  637. the best, but they had that. And then they had, they had the

  638. prayers, they had the sermon. All of the stuff was the same,

  639. but it didn't feel the same. It didn't feel like church.

  640. It felt like whatever, I can do this listening to a podcast or

  641. listen to a recorded sermon. For me, it exposed that the

  642. church, it showed me the reality that their church is not what we

  643. do, it's who we are. So we're not the church unless

  644. we're together. And that's sort of what I felt.

  645. But I don't, I don't know what you about you, Joel.

  646. Yeah, I felt the same way. Sometimes you don't realize how

  647. much you'd miss something until it's gone.

  648. Yeah, so that was. I realized also that I'm not

  649. good at singing, so I need a big crowd to cover that up right.

  650. Loud music, yeah, yeah, like that, that like my wife and

  651. kids, they would stand up, you know, during the songs and I'm

  652. just in the recliner. Just this is.

  653. Horrible. I couldn't, I just couldn't get

  654. into like, I don't know. It's like, but then that also

  655. kind of exposes my heart to am I supposed to get into it?

  656. Like, is it something for me? Like am I supposed to be feeling

  657. a certain way in church and might, you know, so I'm just

  658. trying to think these things through.

  659. So for me, it's just like, yeah, it's not for me.

  660. Like, I'm OK. Listen, I think listening to

  661. sermons is helpful, right? But like, the whole service

  662. being remote is you can't be the church alone.

  663. Yeah, you just can't. And so, yeah.

  664. Yeah, Yeah. Jake also started his sermon

  665. with this idea of, like, we used to be like a front yard

  666. community. Like, the world maybe was more

  667. so in the West back then, where it's like people were in the

  668. front yard and you'd see your neighbors playing in the front

  669. yard and you can have conversations.

  670. But now we've moved to, like, backyard communities, and it's

  671. fenced in. And I felt super judged by that,

  672. like, well, yeah, well, I guess. If you didn't have a fence,

  673. let's be honest, if you didn't have a fence, your backyard

  674. would be the parking lot of the church.

  675. And so that would be kind of difficult at times.

  676. Yeah, it is kind of funny because we, yeah, our, our

  677. backyard, for anybody who doesn't know, our, our, we live

  678. next door to the church. And so our backyard is adjacent

  679. to the driveway. And so like 6 nights of the

  680. week, there's something going on in the church.

  681. And so there's a parade of cars driving.

  682. You're like mowing the yard and you have to wave to everybody.

  683. And so it was like, man, it would be great to have some

  684. privacy. No, I'm, I'm kidding about being

  685. judged, but I thought that was pretty funny.

  686. It is true. You know, like we used to be far

  687. more relational even in our communities than we are now.

  688. And yeah, that's to our detriment, I think.

  689. It reminds me of the social media podcast that you guys had

  690. talking about we, we strive for it.

  691. We, we long for community. I think like it's, I think it's

  692. part of us, part of part of human nature.

  693. It's part of what God like imaged on us.

  694. We long for community, we long for relationship.

  695. And, and like, when you take that away, like you, you do move

  696. from like this slower pace of life to a faster pace of life.

  697. Now we're backyard people where we used to be, front porch

  698. people. And then so we, we, we reach

  699. these devices that we carry around and these apps that

  700. they've, that people have created.

  701. And they say they want us to come together in community, but

  702. it doesn't, it doesn't have the same effect.

  703. It doesn't work. And so, yeah, I don't, I don't

  704. know, we are meant to be together.

  705. Like especially the church, you know, church community done

  706. well, even done poorly, it's better than than nothing.

  707. But done well, it is the IT is the magic of life, I think

  708. church community. So yeah, it's good.

  709. Joel, do you have a fence in your backyard?

  710. No, I wish we have like 8 neighbors.

  711. It's good. We're actually able to meet the

  712. other day with our neighbors across the road just to sit down

  713. and have a talk. And it kind of after Pastor

  714. Jake's sermon, I thought the same thing like this is this is

  715. nice. Did it make you want to get

  716. rocking chairs and like be like Andy Griffith on the front porch

  717. playing guitar for the neighbors?

  718. Not necessarily maybe, but it was nice.

  719. Nice. Yeah, that's.

  720. Another illustration that stood out to me in Pastor Jake's

  721. sermon was the illustration of this this tumor.

  722. So it's a pretty gross like image, honestly.

  723. But this lady who's starving, she has this massive growth of

  724. rogue fat sales as cells is what the pastor Jake described it as.

  725. And like, it was very vivid for me to think about, like the

  726. members of the body going, some members of the body going rogue

  727. and the effect that it had on the person, on the on the whole

  728. body. And then like what that like

  729. plays out. How does that play out in the

  730. church? I don't know if you guys were

  731. impacted by that illustration at all, but I felt like it was very

  732. vivid. And once I got past like the,

  733. the gross image of this person with this giant growth on the

  734. side of her body, which was starving her, making her the

  735. rest of her body look emaciated and just like gross.

  736. Like I, I felt like, man, that is such a picture of like the

  737. danger of rogue members in the, of the body of the Christ, you

  738. know, body of Christ in the church.

  739. So I don't know what you guys felt about that or hurt, you

  740. know. Yeah, I had, I had, Yeah, that

  741. struck me too. I mean, it's it's it's crazy.

  742. I know, I know. He sort of closed with an

  743. illustration of sort of that same idea that, you know, these

  744. people who separate themselves from the body.

  745. You're you're removing yourself from the benefits of those other

  746. people, right. Like when you think about a

  747. body, right, You if and if you're the arm and you separate

  748. yourself from the well, now you lose the advantage of eyesight

  749. and, and feeling and being able to walk and all these different

  750. things. And so that is such a graphic

  751. illustration even that Paul uses.

  752. But you know, when we isolate ourselves from the body, we lose

  753. the benefits of those of those members, right?

  754. And so like, sort of to your point, it's like now both, now

  755. both of you are suffering, right?

  756. You're suffering because you're not benefiting from the body,

  757. but the body's also suffering because they don't have you.

  758. And so I, I think just points us back to the importance of being

  759. connected, coming together and serving one another, you know,

  760. for the sake of the whole body. Yeah.

  761. Yeah, yeah. This is helpful.

  762. What stuck out to me there with that growth as Pastor Jake said

  763. that it was destined for death from the beginning.

  764. Yeah. Whether it is cut off and dies

  765. or it kills its host, it can't survive.

  766. And it's putting that into application of a church body or

  767. yeah, I thought that was very vivid, put a good picture,

  768. painted a good picture in my mind.

  769. Yeah, I think it's just important.

  770. That's that's why it's so important for us to be lashed to

  771. the truth, right? To like be committed to

  772. scripture, to committed to, to making disciples like, and then

  773. it's like for our church being committed to this idea of

  774. disciple making being like the DNA of the, of the church.

  775. We believe that comes from scripture and like for, for us

  776. to be unified in that it's very important for us to be like all

  777. committed to the same goal, like in every ministry from like

  778. children's ministry, youth ministry to the men's ministry,

  779. women's ministry. Like whatever events we do, we

  780. need to make sure that we're, we're trying to stay like

  781. unified to one vision for the health of the church.

  782. Because like you said, like if if all of a sudden men's

  783. ministry decides to do something completely, totally different

  784. and not be like not be part of that vision, it's destined for

  785. death. Like it, it will not succeed and

  786. it will drag down the rest of the church with it.

  787. And so I don't think the men's ministry is going to do that.

  788. But I'm just just trying to use it as an.

  789. Example. Yeah.

  790. So what do you think then? Like, I mean, let's maybe go

  791. down that road of like direct specific application to our

  792. church, right? Like what does this mean to like

  793. the average church member? Like being connected to the

  794. body? Like what?

  795. Like what? Like at LEMC, what does that

  796. look like? How would we encourage people to

  797. be connected to the body so that you are experiencing the

  798. benefits of that body, but also that you can be a benefit?

  799. Silence. Yeah, I don't want to.

  800. I don't want to take from anyone else.

  801. I have ideas but don't do anything.

  802. No, I'm still thinking. It's OK to still think, Yeah, I

  803. think like first of all, like be here, like, like that's the

  804. first step, right? Like like be present, like come

  805. to Sunday morning worship. And then when you're here,

  806. participate in Sunday morning worship.

  807. The second thing I would say is like being part of the body is,

  808. is finding a place to plug in, whether in in service that like

  809. we talked about last time we talked, we talked about like,

  810. like actions and like talents are not our gifts necessarily,

  811. but like find somewhere that you can serve other people in the

  812. church. I think that's the that's the

  813. second thing. And then like being here also

  814. when we're here at other times, like don't just make Sunday

  815. morning the only time that you come together.

  816. Like we, we offer all sorts of things throughout the year,

  817. specifically on Wednesday nights.

  818. As far as corporate things that go, you know, we have we have

  819. like studies that we're doing. You're doing one on the big

  820. picture of the Bible right now. I'm doing one on personal

  821. spiritual disciplines and and everyday holiness and Pastor

  822. Jake's doing well on parenting. Be here, come be a part of it.

  823. Because honestly, more important than the stuff we're teaching,

  824. the conversations that we have afterwards, the things that that

  825. that we discuss between the in the between times, right in that

  826. space that's between and before, like before the thing and after

  827. this, the teaching. Those are those are also very

  828. beneficial, a way that you can stay plugged in and like I, I

  829. don't know about you, but like I've been approached and maybe

  830. it's because of my position, but I don't think so.

  831. I think it's just because we're, we're all seeking the Lord like

  832. approached with prayer request and like questions about like

  833. how, like how they should approach some something going on

  834. in their life. And I've I've heard that from

  835. others in our church too, that like, and I've seen it.

  836. I've seen people praying for each other after a teaching like

  837. be here. That's the number one thing I

  838. think that dudes like, if you want to be separate from the

  839. body, the the fastest way to this just not show up.

  840. Yeah. I don't know.

  841. Did that spur any like thoughts in your mind, Joel?

  842. Yeah, I like that, the idea of action.

  843. Again, I don't want to put my own experience on anyone else,

  844. but I'll think myself into circles.

  845. I'll just ruminate on a thought. What do I, what should I do?

  846. Should I do this? Should I do that?

  847. What are the pros or the cons? And then a month, two months,

  848. six months, a year will go by and I'm still thinking I should

  849. just just do something right, just commit to an action.

  850. And yeah, I like that. Yeah, I think that's that's a

  851. good point too. Like just try, you know what I

  852. mean? Like just try something like put

  853. yourself out there and if it doesn't, if it's not something

  854. that you find beneficial, try something else.

  855. Don't give up in that moment, Right.

  856. So that's good. Yeah.

  857. And this and this goes back to the whole point of like as if,

  858. as if us as a church are just trying to fill a position.

  859. And then once we get you in there, we're going to like lock

  860. the door and like, oh, now you're stuck here forever, like.

  861. We did like we did to Joel in college.

  862. Frank and Anthony for life in the youth department.

  863. That is not the goal. Like the goal is to find the

  864. area that you're gifted in so that you feel empowered to do

  865. that. And that's the thing, right?

  866. Like you can sort of tell like if you're serving in an area of

  867. ministry and it's like, oh, another meeting.

  868. Oh, this is driving me. Not like I, this is, don't get

  869. me wrong there. Maybe maybe you do have someone

  870. who's just calling Shaban meetings.

  871. I don't know. But, but the point is that it's

  872. like, if you love what you're doing in the area that you're

  873. serving, and even if that is like an usher, a parking lot

  874. attendant or whatever, and you're just like, man, I just

  875. love greeting people and saying hi and showing them where to

  876. park and, and being that first person that meets them, then it

  877. doesn't, then the sacrifice means nothing to you.

  878. You're like, I'll get up early in the morning, I'll skip

  879. breakfast, I'll go there like, because I want to do that.

  880. But it's like, if you hate every second of it, then by all means,

  881. we would encourage you. You have not found the area that

  882. you should be serving in. And we would encourage you to

  883. find that right area. And so it is about finding an

  884. area that you feel gifted and empowered in and you will want

  885. to serve, You will want to do it.

  886. Yeah, yeah. So find a place, show up first,

  887. right? And then find a place to plug

  888. in. I think those are like 2 easy

  889. ways. And then of course, like we're

  890. going to always suggest discipleship groups.

  891. I think you're in a sub ship group too.

  892. So like I think that that's that's where you're going to

  893. grow the most as far as your own personal spiritual life goes.

  894. If you're not growing in that, maybe the group's not right and

  895. you need to figure out that too, like switch the group up,

  896. whatever. But it's important for us to

  897. like be in the word together. Like I think that's the one way

  898. you're going to grow together. Is, is being in the word

  899. together. We're reading the same plan.

  900. We're we're we're journaling on the same scripture.

  901. And and like what Joel finds in like, so say your song, what

  902. stood out to you is, is like the primary point, like it might not

  903. be what stood out to me most in that.

  904. And like what I've, what I come to it from and you bring to it.

  905. And we come to this, this idea. We can just talk to talk about

  906. it. And maybe maybe you correct me.

  907. And that's, that's a good thing, right?

  908. It's not like knowing all the answers.

  909. It's about being like teachable and and sharpening one another,

  910. rubbing off the hard the the rough spots as we work together

  911. to for unity. Yeah, I think that's great.

  912. And I think I think because both of those things are important.

  913. And as far as being connected to the body, which is 1, you know,

  914. come to Sunday morning, come to Wednesday night Bible study in

  915. both of those areas, it's like you will be taking in, you will

  916. be being fed in the discipleship group, same thing.

  917. You are going to be receiving the benefits of being connected

  918. to the body. You're going to grow spiritually

  919. through other people's gifts and then finding opportunities to,

  920. to then serve and to use your gifts for others.

  921. And, and I want to just quickly make a distinction between like

  922. like acts of service as far and, but also like maturing the body

  923. because I think I think too often we can go like, OK, well,

  924. I come to church, so I receive the spiritual benefit and then I

  925. stack chairs and that's how I serve.

  926. And that's great. Stacking chairs is great.

  927. We need people to stack chairs at times, right?

  928. A lot of times. I remember hearing Tim Hawkins

  929. say he's like, you never want someone to come up to you and

  930. say you have the gift of service because you know what that

  931. means. They're going to turn around.

  932. And say we need somebody to start stacking.

  933. Triggers but but in my mind it's like your service to others is

  934. to help them grow in their faith.

  935. Like you should never see yourself as being less than

  936. someone who someone else can grow from like you said.

  937. Whether that's praying for someone after the service or

  938. sharing an insight from Scripture or something that

  939. God's been showing you. If you've had a conversation

  940. with me in the last month, you've probably heard me talk

  941. about John chapter 6. I've been sharing this with

    John 6 chapter mention

  942. everybody. You know, when, when Jesus says

  943. to Philip, Hey, where are we going to get enough food for all

  944. these people? And it's like, I've been

  945. applying that to the life of our church.

  946. It's like God seems to be giving our church growth right now.

  947. And it seems to be that God's, you know, nudging us on the

  948. shoulder going, it's like, Hey, what are you going to do with

  949. all these people? And so it's like, how, how, what

  950. are you learning in God's Word and how can you share that with

  951. other people and how can you grow them and grow their faith?

  952. And so don't just see yourself as like, you know, changing

  953. light bulbs, stacking chairs, but like you could you actually

  954. have something in your spiritual life that other people can

  955. benefit from? And they're not going to grow

  956. the way they should until you're doing that because, you know, we

  957. can't reach everybody, right? Sort of along those lines, what

  958. would you guys say to someone who has been coming to this

  959. church for maybe decades and they don't feel connected, like,

  960. like they don't feel connected to the body.

  961. They, they, they're just, they've made me feel like

  962. they're, they're part of the body just because they've always

  963. been part of the body, but they're not, they're not feeling

  964. connected. What would you, what would you

  965. encourage that person to do or what would you like encourage

  966. the church to do for those people?

  967. Yeah, I, I, I have, I'll, I'll give you a moment to thank Joel.

  968. I have, I have two things in my mind.

  969. What one is 1 is our obligation as pastors.

  970. You know, we're the shepherds. And so we need to be, we need to

  971. be doing what we can to give people opportunities to make

  972. connections. And so there's an element to

  973. like, if our people aren't connecting, what, what role are

  974. we playing in that? Right.

  975. And so, and the other element is like your personal

  976. responsibility, you know, like, you know, if if you're coming to

  977. church is just to stand in the corner and wait for someone to

  978. come and then you leave and you say nobody came and talked to

  979. me. My question is going to be,

  980. well, did you go talk to anybody else?

  981. Because I think it's easy for people to look at, you know, a

  982. person like me and think like, oh, well, it's easy for him.

  983. And, and you know, granted I'm a pastor, it's not easy for me.

  984. I, I feel just as uncomfortable as anybody, right?

  985. Like starting a new conversation.

  986. It's like it's hard and it's awkward.

  987. And I put my foot in my mouth more times than I can count

  988. because of, you know, you're, you feel that tension.

  989. But I just make it my mission to go, all right, I'm done talking

  990. to this person. They left, they walked out the

  991. door. I turn around and go, OK, who?

  992. I'll go talk to that guy. And I just walk around and I do

  993. that. And it's literally just that

  994. simple. And so I want to, I want to take

  995. the responsibility that we have to be able to give people

  996. opportunities to make connections, but also recognize

  997. that each person you know, you, you can take a step and, and

  998. it's uncomfortable, I know, but you can take a step too and

  999. start a conversation, get to know some folks and, and try to

1000. make some connections. Yeah, I think you said pretty

1001. good, not an ad there. No, I mean, I know like there

1002. are quiet people in our church, right?

1003. Like Joel, before I like, like before I got to know you, I

1004. would consider you like one of the quiet people in the church

1005. just standing over here. I'm talking to one person at a

  1006. time. And and that's it's fine.

1007. Get to know. So what?

1008. Once you get to know somebody, you feel more comfortable with

  1009. them. And, and I think that's just a,

1010. that you have to take a step to, to make that connection.

1011. Like the other thing is don't be so busy and ready to get out of

1012. here. Like, like that would be what

1013. I'd recommend too. If you're not, if you're not

1014. connecting with the church, I'm asking you, well, how long do

1015. you hang around after the church service is over?

1016. Do you go grab your kids and just bolt to your car because

1017. you got to go do whatever, then you're not going to be connected

1018. to the church. And so, yeah, I noticed that

1019. Joel's almost always the last one to leave, which is good.

1020. It's good because like what you're giving yourself the

1021. opportunity to do, though, is to have a conversation with

1022. someone, a meaningful conversation with people.

1023. And so, and I've even noticed there's a couple of newer people

1024. that are here and they're, they're like fighting Joel and

1025. Courtney to be the last people out the door.

  1026. And it's good. I think that's like a good

1027. example. But I think you're right, Joe.

1028. I think like the onus is on, it's on us as pastors to like do

1029. our best to connect people. But at the end of the day, the

1030. responsibility to connect is on you.

1031. Like you have to, you have to reach out and you never know.

1032. But the reason that other people aren't reaching out might be the

1033. same reason you're not, they're shy or they don't, you know,

  1034. whatever. I don't know.

1035. But anyway, I thought it was just a good, you're not

1036. connected to the body, you feel like you're not well, what are

1037. you doing about it? So.

1038. Yeah. And I and I will say too, it's

1039. like our our foyer is. The worst foyer?

1040. No foyer. It is literally the worst, OK?

1041. It is like you're you're you got 250 people in a sanctuary and

1042. then you funnel them like an hourglass through this like

1043. narrow hallway and it's like it's crowded.

1044. It's loud. My ears are ringing.

1045. If I'm having a conversation in there, it hurts.

1046. And it's like people, some people I think just can't stand

1047. it. And I I totally understand that.

1048. And sometimes I'll just be like, hey, let's go in the sanctuary.

1049. I was. Thinking about the young adults,

1050. when you said that you you're looking for young adults after a

1051. service, just go back in the sanctuary.

1052. They're all just hanging on there still.

1053. But yeah, and I and so there. But there are more intimate

1054. times that our church meets, right?

1055. Like on a Wednesday night, there's a little bit less people

1056. here. It can be quite busy on a

1057. Wednesday night too, that every like once a month we're trying

1058. these Sunday nights. And so that's a more intimate

1059. gathering. And so maybe find an opportunity

1060. to come back to the church where it's a little bit less crazy,

1061. not as many folks around. And so that could give you an

1062. opportunity to make some other connections for sure.

  1063. So. For sure.

  1064. Well, that's good. I think that's all really

1065. helpful. Without Jake here, I can't ask

1066. him the question that I asked you.

1067. What's one thing, you know, maybe Jake can call into the

1068. radio program and let us know. But yeah, so one I kind of

1069. wanted to end on, I started something last week and I feel

1070. like now we have to keep it going is and that means we have

1071. to share things we like. And so Joel, you're our guest

1072. today. So what's one thing you like

1073. that you'd like to share with everybody?

1074. Yeah, Pastor Joe, I think, put it in the Signal chat a few

1075. weeks ago, the book Knowing God by Ji Packer.

1076. So I've been listening to that, not reading it.

1077. Joe was very clear that those weren't the same thing.

1078. But he but he counts them in his in his book reading on the app.

1079. I'll do the same, so I do. Count as a book you read.

1080. Yes, I've been reading that in very small portions.

1081. It's like eating something that's very heavy.

1082. I can't understand everything at once, so just been listening to

1083. short bits and then ruminating. Awesome.

1084. So yeah, that's been good. Yeah, Knowing God.

1085. I would recommend Knowing God as well as a resource for you

1086. podcast listener. Joe yeah, I am.

1087. I'll highlight the book that I've been going through in our

1088. Wednesday night study. It's called God's Big Picture, a

1089. Bible Overview. And what this book does is it

1090. just sort of takes, it's making the basic argument that the

1091. whole, but the whole Bible, even though it's 66 different books

1092. by 40 different authors over the span of, you know, 2000 years or

  1093. whatever, that it's, it's one story.

1094. It's an overarching story of God's plan of redemption.

1095. And so he begins by talking about like the pattern of the

1096. Kingdom. Everything was perfect in the

1097. garden. And then the perished Kingdom,

1098. sin entered the world. And then there was the promised

1099. Kingdom where God promises to make Abraham a great nation.

1100. And then you have the partial Kingdom, which is where some of

1101. these things are fulfilled in the people of Israel.

1102. And then there's the prophesied Kingdom.

  1103. But it's like it. But it's.

1104. But they're still failing, right?

  1105. Israel's still failing. And so there's a prophesied

1106. Kingdom coming about Christ, right?

1107. Yeah. And that's the present Kingdom,

1108. which Christ ushers in this new Kingdom of people who have his

1109. spirit. And we're going to go on in the

1110. next couple weeks to talk about the proclaimed Kingdom, which is

1111. a coming Kingdom in the future and the perfected Kingdom.

1112. And so anyway, it's just, it's been a it's been an amazing book

1113. to see how all these tie things tie together.

1114. And you and you shared a photo with me.

1115. Yeah, the other day of all of like the cross references.

1116. In the Bible. Of the Bible to itself, right?

1117. And it's like this giant rainbow.

1118. Yeah, well, they color code the lines and so.

1119. Yeah, and they put it in an arc and it's like the rainbow.

1120. And it's just showing how the Bible's all connected, right?

1121. They're they're not disjointed books that that have no relation

1122. to one another, but it's like they all are tied together.

1123. Telling the same story. Telling the same.

  1124. Story. Yeah.

1125. So God's big picture, it's a study, but it's also, there is

1126. also a book, it's basically biblical theology.

1127. So it's really, really good and very helpful for me.

1128. I would say The Joy of Hearing by Thomas Shriner in our Bible

1129. reading plan, we just got to Revelation.

1130. And this is a complicated, complex book for a lot of

1131. people, but Doctor Shriner, he makes it, He makes it seem

1132. joyful, like it's about Christ. And it's just a great book to

1133. read to supplement any kind of study in Revelation.

1134. Yeah, he get, he doesn't get too much into the controversial

1135. things. His point in that book is is

1136. pointing to Christ. And so it's really, really good.

1137. So, yeah. So those are things we like.

1138. We'll put a link to all of those things in the show notes.

1139. Yeah, I think that wraps up our time.

1140. Anything else Joe you want to add?

1141. Yeah, I just want to bounce just for a second off of the

  1142. revelation. I I.

1143. We talked about this. We're not getting into

  1144. controversial things. Within 6 minutes I'm.

1145. Sorry, not no, not controversial.

1146. I just I was struck by so again at the beginning of revelation,

1147. it's like this is the revelation of Jesus Christ, which is a

1148. helpful reminder to us. It's like all these things are

1149. coming as a result of Christ and the authority that he now has

1150. given to him by God. And so, but in verse three, it

1151. says, blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this

1152. prophecy, and blessed are those who hear and who keep what is

1153. written in it, for the time is near.

1154. And I, that struck me so much. And it has shaped every single

1155. chapter that I've read so that I'm like, we're blessed if we

1156. read it, if we hear it, and if we obey it.

1157. It's a book to be obeyed. Yeah, it's not a book to be

1158. dissected. And you know what ruler of the

1159. world today correlates with what ruler in the No, This is a book

1160. that is supposed to lead us into worship of our Savior that we

1161. are to obey. And so every single chapter I'm

1162. looking for something to be obedient to and I, and it's,

1163. it's transformed me, right? It transformed and it is a book

1164. about the future, right? But it's transforming me from

1165. like just looking ahead or looking around me to going,

1166. there's something in this for me to actually obey.

1167. And so I, I just wanted to give that as an encouragement to the

1168. church that and I get there's going to be all that other stuff

1169. and whatever, but don't focus on all those external things like

1170. focus on your heart and how you can be obedient.

1171. Yeah, One example of that, not focusing on the external things,

1172. like, right. So like in chapter 4, it talks

1173. about the 24 elders who who have their Thrones around the throne,

  1174. right. Yeah.

1175. But what are they doing? Yeah.

1176. Like that's not important for us to, like, think about who they

1177. are, right. And like why they have a why

1178. they have a certain higher position than others in heaven.

1179. That's interesting, but it's not the point.

1180. The point is that what are they doing?

1181. Like says that there are creatures who who were created

1182. that to do this constantly to sing our holy, holy, holy hymn,

1183. right? Where we get that from?

1184. They do it non-stop. And then it says while they're

1185. doing that every time they're doing that.

1186. So non-stop, the elders are praising God face down around

1187. the throne. And the the point is for us to

1188. worship. So that's the thing.

1189. We should obey. It's just really exciting to see

1190. that. And when you look at it like,

1191. like, what am I supposed to do with this instead of like, can I

1192. figure this out? And when this is happening, who

1193. is this is, what is this? What is this supposed to do?

1194. What is this teaching me about Christ?

1195. And what am I supposed to obey here?

  1196. I think it's such a good, good reminder.

1197. So, yeah, that's our revelation minute.

1198. So Revelations, that's only one revelation.

1199. Yeah. Joel, thank you for taking the

1200. time out of your busy day. You took off work to come in

1201. here for lunch and it's been longer than lunch, so we

1202. appreciate you to making a sacrifice to be with us today.

1203. Yeah. Thank you for having me on here.

1204. Yeah, we've been really appreciating this podcast.

1205. It's been really good. Well, we hope to do it again,

1206. like we'll bring you on again as another guest.

1207. So. So be ready for that.

1208. Yeah. Joe, thanks again for for

1209. joining me. Pastor Jake, we missed you.

1210. We look forward to to another conversation again next week.

1211. Until then, LMC, we're praying for you.

1212. We love you. Reach out with your questions.
