  1. Welcome to Beyond Sunday. That's the way Joe introduces

  2. it. When he does it, he goes.

  3. Welcome to Beyond Sunday you. Got to have that cool cadence.

  4. Welcome. Welcome to Be on Sunday podcast

  5. that is based on the preaching ministry of Leamington EMC.

  6. I am Jonah, and I'm joined today as always by it.

  7. Joe's not here. So today, I'm joined by two

  8. guests who have been on the podcast before.

  9. One of them is Ryan Fair. Yep.

  10. I was going to say Kyle Barch first.

  11. And then I was like, that might make your head too big.

  12. Yeah. And so I didn't.

  13. No, you're right. I didn't want to give you too

  14. much pride in your life trying to trying to help you.

  15. Yeah, man, he's working. Yeah, we all need help with

  16. humility. God's been humbling me in ways

  17. that I never could have expected.

  18. Good. Kyle's got a real face for

  19. radio. I do.

  20. Watch it. You're making like now you're

  21. making Yvonne's judgment. No, she.

  22. Knows what she's doing. OK, yeah, so Joe is on vacation

  23. and Pastor Jake is out this week and so I have asked for the B

  24. team to come in. No, they're not.

  25. They're great, Ryan. The reason?

  26. Well, it was great because it worked out really, really good

  27. for that to happen. Because Ryan had family night.

  28. He did the little devotion sermon at sermon, whatever you

  29. want to call it. It was a good sermon, 2 pointer,

  30. 2 point sermon in Colossians chapter 4.

    Colossians 4 chapter mention

  31. And then Pastor Jake preached sermon from Nehemiah, which

  32. we'll talk about first. His sermon was from Nehemiah,

    Nehemiah 6 chapter mention

  33. chapter 6, almost at 7:00. Again, we're talking about 7.

  34. I'll be preaching from Chapter 7 next week, so that'll be fun.

  35. But yeah. So Pastor Jake's sermon was

  36. called Don't Give in to Threats and Distractions.

  37. Was that the name of the sermon? I'm so.

  38. Familiar. Yeah, that was it.

  39. He had four points, the attack of deception, the attack of fear

  40. and intimidation, the religious attack and then vindicated by

  41. God. Yeah, So in the in the book, he

  42. said he did give us a quite a bit of context as he opened

  43. discernment, which was helpful giving like the whole overview,

  44. like where we are to this point. And then he this is when we get

  45. that that the wall is finished in 52 days, which is is

  46. incredible to think about, like he it hadn't been finished.

  47. Over a century had passed since they came back it.

  48. Was a month and 1/2 and. He did it in, yeah, 52 days.

  49. That was pretty incredible. But yeah, we get we get a famous

  50. verse. Nehemiah 6 three is like he's

  51. sending messengers back to Sambalot and he says, he says

  52. I'm doing a great work and it cannot come down.

  53. And I think that like, Pastor Jake picked up on that, like

  54. being like, we can't be distracted.

  55. And now I think that was his main point.

  56. Don't be distracted from your main mission.

  57. And so, yeah, I just felt like it was, it's a it's a great

  58. passage. And I think Pastor Drake said

  59. that, too. He's like, this is a great

  60. passage of Scripture. Anyway, what do you guys think?

  61. Yeah, I really liked it. It spoke to me in a way that,

  62. like a lot of, you know, sometimes you kind of just idly

  63. sit through a sermon or whatever because whatever reason in your

  64. life. But I don't know, like I've been

  65. feeling particularly distracted in my own life recently.

  66. And so it kind of felt like it was just really good timing,

  67. like trying to distract. Sorry, could you repeat that

  68. because I was a little distracted?

  69. No, yeah. Absolutely.

  70. I can. No, I don't know.

  71. I think that like he talks a lot about like specific distractions

  72. that take away from ministry or like from the spiritual growth

  73. of your life and that kind of stuff.

  74. And I think that he gave some like tangible examples at the

  75. end, you know, things like worry and like anxiety and fear.

  76. I don't remember him saying it, but specifically I'm thinking

  77. like comfort recently or just like idle kind of like little,

  78. little pleasures here and then you.

  79. Don't mean comfort, like comfort in a hard time.

  80. You mean like I'm just taking the comfort of my life too

  81. seriously? Right.

  82. Yeah. Like surrounding yourself with

  83. comfort kind of primarily, you know, seeking after, you know,

  84. that next Netflix series instead of seeking after that next, you

  85. know, chapter of the reading plan.

  86. You know, I don't know, I feel like it was a good time for me

  87. to hear that sermon because I'm kind of in a weird sort of

  88. groggy season. Yeah, well, maybe some like, I

  89. don't know, it's cold in Ontario right now.

  90. And so and and so you feel like you're stuck indoors.

  91. You just go to work, you come home, you don't really, there's

  92. nothing to do. So it's like, you know, maybe

  93. the Netflix is the next thing, right?

  94. So, yeah, that's good. That's good.

  95. What about you, Ryan? I liked it.

  96. It was, yeah, it was good. He, I I really liked his second

  97. and Third Point, the attack of fear and intimidation and then

  98. the religious attack. I like how on the second point,

  99. it really pointed out, like, we shouldn't always stay silent.

  100. Like Nehemiah, he was constantly sending messengers back and,

  101. like, countering, like they claimed, like, oh, hey, we're

  102. gonna go tell the king. Like, we're gonna tattle on you,

  103. right? He's like, OK, like I didn't do

  104. anything wrong. Right.

  105. So I thought that was kind of cool.

  106. Like, you know, sometimes people always say like, oh, you know,

  107. religion is separate from whatever.

  108. Like, no, this is, this is our whole life, right?

  109. Like we, we should, we should want not stay silent.

  110. We should like stand up for what we believe in, right?

  111. Like first Peter talks. About.

  112. Yeah, exactly. Yeah.

  113. I think like that. That's good.

  114. Nehemiah had a conviction. Yeah.

  115. Like, and he had, he felt like he had like a job that was given

  116. to him from the Lord. Yeah.

  117. And that's why when he says I'm doing a great work and I cannot

  118. come down, he's like, I'm not going to let anything distract

  119. me from what the Lord has called me to do.

  120. Yeah, especially, especially these guys.

  121. Like these guys have been the troublemaker since the beginning

  122. of the book, right? We've learned it.

  123. We've heard Sambalot's name several times.

  124. Yeah, it's a kind of a weird name, Sambalot.

  125. So. There's no way that's how it's

  126. actually pronounced, but like. Well, for sure, because I'm from

  127. the deep, Deep South. We're from the the cold cold N

  128. so. We we got it all wrong.

  129. Yeah. But but, yeah.

  130. So I mean, he the, the important thing is like he's not

  131. distracted and like the application for us is like,

  132. what? What is the thing we should be

  133. focused on? Yeah.

  134. Something I really liked about the Third Point too was like I

  135. never really thought about the idea that like distractions can

  136. come from a religious sort of point of view, like people, that

  137. people can weaponize what seems pious to cause distractions or

  138. to interview with God's plan, which that blew my mind a little

  139. bit. I don't know why.

  140. It seems kind of like self-explanatory, but like, I

  141. don't know, you just kind of think that like if someone's

  142. saying to you like, hey, we're a part of, you know, the religious

  143. body, you know, we have this idea.

  144. We just want to meet with you about, you know, specifics on

  145. things. It's interesting to see the

  146. perspective of, like, that could be a distraction in of itself,

  147. pulling people away from doing the actual work that's actually

  148. happening. And I think that especially

  149. being in, like, in the church setting, that can tend to happen

  150. with like, you know, meetings where it's like, I'm not in

  151. these meetings, but yeah, you are.

  152. And I just can't imagine, like, I just in my mind, see these

  153. meetings where it's like, all right, we'll pray about it for

  154. another six months, or we'll pray about it for another eight

  155. months, you know what I mean? And prayer is a good pious thing

  156. to do. But I sometimes wonder if like,

  157. it's used as a way to kind of prolong the work that needs to

  158. get done. You know what I mean?

  159. Yeah, I mean, a lot of people, like, I think that goes back to

  160. maybe fear as well. Like people will put things off

  161. out of their own fear, like not, they're not trying to like use

  162. fear to intimidate you like in the past year, but like they use

  163. like this that, you know, fear that like a lot of people just

  164. I'm not one of these people. I'm just being honest, but a lot

  165. of people are really afraid of change.

  166. Like and so and that's, that's completely understandable.

  167. Like because you've seen something the way it's always

  168. been. And then like, there's this guy

  169. that comes and he says we should do it this way and like, without

  170. like taking the time to process it and really figure it out.

  171. And that's a lot of people are just afraid of change.

  172. Oh. Yeah, well, and like, even for

  173. me, like I, I am not very like, quick to change.

  174. Yeah, even in my personal life. But it goes back to what Jake

  175. said too in the sermon, where it's like that fear is that it's

  176. almost like the fear is like the motivating distraction that

  177. leads to like the physical distraction.

  178. It's like the fear and the anxiety that he mentions the end

  179. of his sermon. It's almost like those all three

  180. points ultimately those kind of boil down to like a core reason,

  181. like where it's like the fear a person has or the anxiety that a

  182. person might have on something. Those bring out the physical

  183. aspects of distraction, whether it be through like being devious

  184. or what was the word deceptive? Deceptive.

  185. That's the one. Like the the Decepticons you

  186. know. Like they were like

  187. Transformers. Yeah.

  188. Well, like, yeah, exactly. Like whether that ends up being

  189. coming out as deceptive or whether it comes out through

  190. intimidation or whether it comes out through false piety.

  191. I know that even too. Like the last time Jake

  192. preached, I remember him saying too, that like, how many people

  193. go around and just. We'll tout off, you know, pious

  194. platitudes. Does that actually meaning

  195. anything, right? It's it almost like those three

  196. things can kind of boil down to like those fear and those

  197. anxiety. Responses yeah, I think

  198. honestly, I think that like, I mean this in the in the MI, I

  199. think like the the motives are definitely nefarious, right like

  200. like, but he was they were acting out of fear, right.

  201. Like if Israel did become more powerful and they did

  202. reestablish themselves in the area in the region, then their

  203. economic whatever they've got going on would would decrease.

  204. So I mean these these guys are acting out of fear for their own

  205. like livelihood as well. And so but I think like like my

  206. wife tells me all the time that you know Jonah, I know you get

  207. really excited about new things and you like new, new things and

  208. change what you got to dial it back a little bit because you're

  209. making me a little bit crazy right now.

  210. And so like, you know they're people like me have to recognize

  211. that that people who are slow to adopt or or maybe are afraid of

  212. change. We have to we have to like

  213. slowly think like step back and we do have to allow some time.

  214. But on the other side, people who love like are they like the

  215. things keep the things the same way all the time myself.

  216. Yeah. Don't like change.

  217. They also need to like step like into it and think about it.

  218. Like give give it some like some real thought, not just like put

  219. up this hard wall. Yeah, exactly.

  220. Well, yeah, meet in the middle or just like both of you have to

  221. sort of like understand that there's something on the other

  222. side that has like real reasons for what they're doing.

  223. Yeah, yeah. And not get.

  224. Frustrated with each other from the perspective of someone

  225. that's kind of worried for change.

  226. It's easier said than done though, for sure.

  227. I I don't know, your process is probably the same thing.

  228. It's probably easier said than done to kind of hold.

  229. Off Oh yeah, yeah, you wouldn't you just hate life most of the

  230. time it's like, oh, can't we just do whatever I know will

  231. work and then yeah. So you just get, you get.

  232. It's it's difficult. Well, it's hard to because like

  233. from this, from the other perspective, it's like, why do

  234. we have to do, Why do we have to deviate from the things that we

  235. already know will work? And you have the same place

  236. where it's like, I, I'm pretty sure this will work too.

  237. So I don't know, you're right. It's kind of, it depends on, I

  238. think that there's a, there's a fear on both fronts there that

  239. you have to kind of monitor. But I think it comes back to the

  240. conviction. So like what?

  241. What is the conviction of the work that you're doing?

  242. So like that. That to me is like the the

  243. reason, Like who? Whatever side, like if there is

  244. two sides, whatever side comes out on top, like the conviction

  245. is going to be the strongest. Yeah.

  246. Like that conviction is the strongest.

  247. And so like in Nehemiah here, I'm doing an important work, a

  248. great work, and I cannot come down to bother with you like I'm

  249. doing this. And so like, like we have to be

  250. willing to to be conviction about certain things.

  251. And I think like Pastor Jake was in his sermon, he was talking

  252. specifically our convictions are around the gospel, right?

  253. As a, as a, a Christian Church, as an evangelical church, then

  254. our, our goal and mission is to give the gospel to as many

  255. people as as we can hear it, right.

  256. And so I think that's what we we have to be dead, like dead

  257. focused on that as a church. And, and I, I thought it was a

  258. really good sermon. I honestly, yeah, it was, it's

  259. something that's well needed. Like we don't need to be

  260. distracted. For sure, 100%.

  261. Yeah. And be aware, like, that's the

  262. other things. Be aware the attacks can come

  263. from from all different angles. And then like from inside, from

  264. outside, from like, what you think, like you said, Kyle, like

  265. for what it might be, what you expect to be very, very good.

  266. Yeah. Right, well, and not only that,

  267. like sorry, Ryan, I want you to talk to, but like from the

  268. inside. Like it's interesting he

  269. mentions that too, because like obviously we anticipate attacks

  270. from the outside, right? Because of the world, we to an

  271. extent, we also anticipate attacks from the inside of the

  272. church because churches are messy.

  273. They're run by people. Yeah.

  274. But the reality too is that like attacks from inside our own

  275. hearts, right? Like we are, we are constantly

  276. fighting the flesh. Yeah.

  277. Like we are new creations with a new with a new.

  278. We're new creations and we are fighting the old self

  279. constantly. And so kind of speaking to

  280. myself for someone who isn't like more adverse to change,

  281. I've been really trying to be more open to things and trying

  282. to like change that perspective because I understand that like,

  283. you know, there is a, there is something inside of me that I

  284. have to fight against to actively in scripture or like in

  285. the spiritual sort of sense because I'm a Sinner.

  286. And so sometimes these are, I know you heard it here first,

  287. folks, but like, you know, but you know what I'm getting at,

  288. like sometimes being comfortable and kind of let's goes back to

  289. the season that I'm in right now, kind of huddling in for

  290. comfort. It's it's a desire for me to

  291. stay to like my fleshly side. And so sometimes the adverse to

  292. change that I feel and the fear I have from it, it comes from

  293. that same place where it's like a desire to stay comfortable, a

  294. desire to not have to fight those fleshly desires.

  295. And so I thought that it was a cool distinction to think about

  296. attacks from the outside, outside of the building, inside

  297. of the building. But I think it's important also

  298. for all of us to recognize that there is also attacks from

  299. inside of our own hearts. No, that's good.

  300. And it's biblical. I was.

  301. You made me. You had me thinking about Romans

  302. 7. I know I was distracting you

  303. when you were talking as I was turning my Bible here.

  304. So you're good. Sorry about that.

  305. But like Paul says in Romans 7, he's like 7/18.

  306. For I know that nothing good dwells in me that is in my

  307. flesh. For I have the desire to do what

  308. is right, but not the ability to carry it out.

  309. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is

  310. what I keep on doing. And then he says, now if I do

  311. what I do not want, it's no longer I who do it, but sin that

  312. dwells in me. So yeah, you're a Sinner.

  313. You point. You picked up on that.

  314. It's almost like you've read this before and you thought on

  315. that before. So I find it to be a law that

  316. when I do what it that when I do, excuse me, when I want to do

  317. right, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God

  318. in my inner being, but I see my members another law, waging war

  319. against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of

  320. sin that dwells in my members. And it's not to say that like

  321. remaining the same or liking the liking what you got going on or

  322. like maybe being adverse to change is necessarily wrong.

  323. It just goes back to what you said.

  324. Yeah, what it like, what is the motivating?

  325. Factor. We have to have that conviction.

  326. Right. Yeah.

  327. What's the conviction behind it? Well, and at the end of the day,

  328. too, like our conviction as Christians is it's God's word,

  329. right? So like, no matter whether

  330. you're adverse to change or whether like I'm, I'm more with

  331. Jonah, like I'm, I'm willing to change anything in my life, like

  332. good for you. But but at the end of the day,

  333. like, is it scriptural, right? Is it scriptural to sit back?

  334. Is it scriptural to move? Well, we got to do what?

  335. What God's Word. Tells us to do our convictions

  336. need to be based on the word? And that's what we see Nehemiah

  337. doing, right? He's just constantly like, no,

  338. I'm doing what God has instructed me to do, right?

  339. Yeah. That's right.

  340. Yeah. We're going to see in seven that

  341. he sets up, He's setting up, he's setting something up

  342. because in chapter 8, we get one of the like most famous passages

  343. in the Bible where Ezra stands and they all get together and he

  344. reads the law. But he can't do that without

  345. what what Nehemiah does in Chapter 7.

  346. So that's a teaser for next week.

  347. And then yeah. What are your guys final

  348. thoughts on Nehemiah because we got to move to what you did on

  349. family night. I like Nehemiah.

  350. Nehemiah. Yeah, Nehemiah.

  351. Yeah, I thought, yeah, it's great.

  352. Great job, Pastor Jake, on the sermon and it's really helpful

  353. for all of us. So yeah, so we'll move on.

  354. Yeah, is good with you guys. Yeah, we don't edit on this

  355. podcast, so if you're ready to move on, we can move.

  356. On Thumbs up man, I'm happy. OK, thumbs up or not, it's not a

  357. video. It's not a video podcast.

  358. So yeah, so thumbs up. OK, we're moving on.

  359. Pulled up. My notes.

  360. Although if you are interested in video podcasting, I have had

  361. someone ask me, could we put it on YouTube?

  362. And I'm like, I don't know. My, I have a like again, Kyle

  363. has a face for radio and so do I.

  364. We can't all be like Joe Penner and Ryan Fair, you know, the

  365. good looking handsome guy. So some guys get it all exactly.

  366. Ryan, you did preach from Colossians 4.

  367. I'll try to turn there if I can find it.

  368. Colossians chapter 4 verses 2 to 4 verses 2:00 to 4:00.

    Colossians 4:2–4

  369. So why don't you give us like a rundown of what you talked about

  370. last night? Yeah, I mean.

  371. Today's Monday, by the way. This will be dropping on

  372. Wednesday. So last night is, yeah, that

  373. makes sense. Just making sure that everybody

  374. was on the same page. That's good.

  375. So yeah, it's, I mean, 3 verses, but basically, yeah, there was

  376. two points. One was our posture and prayer

  377. and one was like specific prayer for missionaries and church

  378. leaders. And so just kind of flushing

  379. that out on like how we should like, act in our prayers and

  380. then, yeah, who we should pray for.

  381. So who should we pray for? Everybody.

  382. Everybody. And this.

  383. Passage specifically missionaries and church leaders.

  384. Yeah, which was the reason for our gathering last night, right?

  385. Exactly. And that that's why we chose

  386. this passage. The missions committee mentioned

  387. it to me. And so I thought it was a great

  388. idea. Yeah.

  389. And so yeah, it because, yeah, I was specifically for the

  390. missionaries that we would end up praying for that are.

  391. Conference sports. Yeah, that's good.

  392. I liked how you opened. You gave some good context about

  393. prayer. Like I didn't know these stats,

  394. so I thought were really helpful that 300 plus times prayer,

  395. pray, praying the words, specific words are mentioned in

  396. the Bible and then there's 650 recorded prayers.

  397. It's pretty awesome. And then we have 25 of those

  398. that our Lord Jesus prayed, which is really, really, I

  399. thought that was that's helpful context.

  400. Like believers should be praying people, right?

  401. We should be praying people. We should be talking to the

  402. Lord. So I I thought that was really,

  403. really good context to set up for, for it.

  404. Yeah, Yeah. Go ahead.

  405. I was going to say I read this book not that long ago by JC

  406. Rile called the Do You pray? Great book.

  407. And I just thought of this quote, which was like, you can

  408. be very sure that people fall in private long before they fall in

  409. public. And like, I don't know, I, I

  410. really like the emphasis that we have on family nights that's

  411. like geared towards prayer because it feels like that's

  412. like the one discipline that everyone knows they should do,

  413. but because everyone has easy access to it, nobody does it,

  414. you know what I mean? Yeah, it is.

  415. It is the easiest and the hardest thing to do.

  416. Well, that's what I mean. It's the easiest to do.

  417. It's the hardest to discipline. Yeah, I, I, I find it hard to do

  418. as well, like because of my pride and the, the sin in my

  419. heart, right. Going back to Romans 7, that war

  420. inside me, the flesh and then the and then the spirit that's

  421. in me that that are that are battling it out.

  422. Yeah. So I find it to be it is easy

  423. like I would, I like I it is easy to do, but it's also very

  424. hard for a prideful person like myself to do like to because

  425. what you're doing in that moment is you're you're submitting

  426. yourself to God and you're saying I'm you're God and I'm

  427. not right. So, yeah.

  428. And really, yeah. JC Ryo, RYLE, for those

  429. listening. Exactly.

  430. Look that up. What's the book called?

  431. Do you pray? Do you pray?

  432. Yeah. And like going back to that

  433. quote, it's, I like it because it's true.

  434. It's indicative of like the Christian endeavor, right?

  435. Like when you aren't in your private life in prayer, seeking

  436. the Lord publicly, things are gonna start falling.

  437. Yeah, like it. You fall in private far before

  438. you fall in. I think it's self-explanatory,

  439. but I like it. Yeah, it's good.

  440. Yeah, no, I really like the prayer nights too, like you

  441. said, like, and I know I was thinking about using this quote.

  442. I didn't, but it's a quote from Spurgeon.

  443. Charles, Charlie. Charles Hadden.

  444. He he said I'd rather teach one man to pray than 10 men to

  445. preach like he just like prayer is just so, so important, right?

  446. And like preaching, preaching is super important, and that just

  447. shows how much more important prayer is in our lives.

  448. Yeah, well, it's the like, it's prayer is like the thing that

  449. Christians can do in their private life to connect with

  450. God, you know, in a way, Like you can read his word,

  451. obviously, but prayer is like direct communication with the

  452. Almighty. And so like it, it works.

  453. Like it just, it just works. Like, I don't know why people

  454. like even for myself, I'm talking to myself mostly here

  455. where it's like I can go through a season where I'm praying

  456. vigorously and everything I'm praying for is happening exactly

  457. as it I I want it even. And then all of a sudden, like

  458. the next thing pops up and then it's like, oh, but I don't know

  459. if God's going to hear me on this one, you know, even though

  460. I have this whole backlog of answered prayers.

  461. But yeah, no, but you did a really good job.

  462. Like your sermonette it. Was it was good.

  463. Unfortunately, we didn't record it.

  464. Oh, no, I feel so bad about it. Like I feel bad because we've

  465. started recording and and then it was a busy, it was a busy

  466. Sunday. And then, yeah, I just didn't

  467. didn't think about getting someone back there to record so

  468. well. If I didn't hear it, you missed.

  469. Out you missed out, believers pray.

  470. That was one thing I wrote down. The other thing I wrote down was

  471. like, be awake. Like are we?

  472. And I asked myself the question, am I awake in my prayer?

  473. Like, am I really being watchful?

  474. I thought, I thought you did a good job, like taking that

  475. sentence and two, I think. Yeah.

  476. And breaking verse 2 apart with the three points of like being

  477. steadfast in prayer, being watchful in prayer and and doing

  478. it all with Thanksgiving. So I thought that was a good

  479. exegesis on your part. You broke that down and made it

  480. like you made your point centered on that.

  481. So I thought it was really, really helpful.

  482. Yeah, and on a. Practical level too.

  483. It's like, how many times do you just kind of idly lay in bed

  484. right before you go to sleep and you just kind of rattle off some

  485. list of things you need or want and then you just kind of zonk

  486. out. Yeah.

  487. Yeah, well, in that, like that was kind of the illustration

  488. that I use, right. Like me, yeah, me and my wife

  489. praying before we go to bed and me falling asleep, which

  490. happened so. Yesterday, yesterday I was

  491. convicted twice about not praying, like about my, my, my

  492. habit of not praying before I go to bed with my wife.

  493. OK, so the sermon that you preached and you talked about

  494. like falling asleep in your own prayer, which is fine.

  495. And then you got the elbow to the ribs, right?

  496. Yeah, but that's fine. You were, you were you were

  497. disciplining yourself, you guys in your marriage of discipline

  498. yourself to like this is something where it's important

  499. we're going to pray before we go to bed.

  500. So that was one of them. I was convicted.

  501. But that was the second one. The first one as after church on

  502. like the morning service, I was driving to the superstore to get

  503. some groceries and I was listening.

  504. I've been listening to this. Colin Hansen wrote a book on

  505. like an autobiography, not an auto.

  506. It wouldn't be autobiography be a biography, sort of a biography

  507. on Tim Keller, his spiritual and intellectual formation.

  508. It's a really, really good book. But in it he talks about how Tim

  509. Keller didn't have a habit of praying with his wife either.

  510. And so he tells a story about Tim's wife saying, you know,

  511. hey, just imagine if you were if you were dying and the remedy

  512. for it was to take this pill every single night.

  513. If you miss one night, you're going to die, Would you do it?

  514. And obviously the obvious answer is, of course, I would do it.

  515. And and she was convicting him about it too.

  516. It's like, OK, so that so basically, we're not going to

  517. make it if we don't pray together.

  518. So they made it then then they made a early on in their

  519. marriage. It was early, they made a

  520. commitment to each other that they would they would pray every

  521. night. And so no matter where he was in

  522. the world speaking, no matter what time zone it was in, they

  523. always prayed before they went to bed and and made sure that

  524. they connected and prayed together before they went to

  525. bed. So that was that was the first

  526. time I was convicted yesterday about it.

  527. Second time was your sermon. And then of course, I went to

  528. bed and didn't pray with my wife.

  529. So, but no, it's, it is convicting.

  530. And now that she will listen to this on Wednesday, right when it

  531. comes out. And now we'll have to and it's

  532. good. But no, Kyle, I'm really worried

  533. about you need to stop talking to yourself so much.

  534. We need to get that thing. You know, maybe we should talk

  535. to somebody else about that, but we're talking to yourself all

  536. the time. Yeah, I do talk to myself quite

  537. a bit. No, it's good.

  538. Well, I was going to say too, that like, it's interesting what

  539. you're saying right now between like that and like your

  540. conviction with you and your wife.

  541. It it's interesting that like prayer doesn't just connect us

  542. with the Father, it connects us with other believers.

  543. Yeah. And it's interesting to see the

  544. connected, the connection power that happens, A, between like a

  545. married couple and they're praying or B even in a church

  546. setting with a body of believers, how we can form and

  547. connect with each other relationally through the act of

  548. praying to God. Yeah, it does draw you closer to

  549. each other for sure. Really cool.

  550. Yeah, I'm always moved on the family nights when we when we

  551. spend time, it's just 1/2 hour like because we have like 1/2

  552. hour of like music and a devotion and then we just spend

  553. like it and it's really almost too short.

  554. It feels like I feel bad because I'll eat it most of the time.

  555. You let it last night, which was really good and I appreciate you

  556. doing that. But you feel bad when you step

  557. up there and interrupt people praying.

  558. And I'm like, can't we just keep this going?

  559. But then there's there's all sorts of temperaments in the

  560. room. Like there are people who won't

  561. gather in a group. Have you noticed that?

  562. Like there are some people, because we want to gather in

  563. like groups of three or four pray, but there are a couple who

  564. just won't. And so that's a timber.

  565. They're just praying on their own.

  566. And then there are people who want to pray and they pray a

  567. lot. And then there's people who get

  568. together and then they they pray quickly and then they chat.

  569. And that's it's natural. But like, again, I think if we

  570. could keep it going, like what you're doing is, Kyle, what you

  571. mentioned there is you're connecting and you're bonding

  572. together over prayer, but you're also teaching each other how to

  573. pray. Like you're teaching each other

  574. like the posture of prayer, right?

  575. Like our posture is one that's steadfast, one that's with

  576. Thanksgiving and the one that's being watchful about like what

  577. we're talking about and like and guarding the church.

  578. And so, yeah, I like you're we're teaching each other.

  579. Pray if you just, if you're just also it's just me and Jesus and

  580. I'm good. That's not the Christian life.

  581. No, the Christian life is meant to be done in community.

  582. Yeah, well and to like speaking to the lengths of prayers I it.

  583. Doesn't even. Did you say length or did you

  584. say? Length of prayers for Yeah,

  585. well, I was going to say was that like they don't necessarily

  586. have to be long, they just have to be biblical true, you know

  587. like they. Well, yeah, and Jesus warns us

  588. about long babbling prayers, right?

  589. Exactly. Vain repetitions, right?

  590. And so on. The years are long enough.

  591. Another Spurgeon quote as. Ironically, the example he gives

  592. of how to pray right after he says stay away from vain

  593. repetitions has become a vain repetition, which I think is

  594. kind of hilarious. Yeah.

  595. But. It's funny too that you bring

  596. that up like the disciples didn't ask how to like, preach,

  597. how to do all these things. They asked him how to pray.

  598. Because I think like, like I kind of mentioned that passenger

  599. Mark where he would go, go off and pray in the wilderness even

  600. when there were crowds gathered. And I think like they really saw

  601. him praying all the time. They're like, what do you do?

  602. Like how, how do you pray? Right.

  603. And that's like. Yeah, that's a good point.

  604. Well, in praying alone is of benefit as well, like but in a

  605. church setting though, it is important for us to kind of

  606. cultivate those relationships. For sure, yeah, I wouldn't.

  607. I wouldn't say that you couldn't do any spiritual things alone.

  608. I don't. I don't want to make that.

  609. That's a good distinction. Yeah.

  610. Because that's not the point I was making.

  611. The point I was making is like Christianity is not meant to be

  612. done all by yourself all the time, like it is supposed to be

  613. done in community. But you're right.

  614. I mean, I pray all we all do. We all pray alone all the time.

  615. So. And yeah, in fact, Jesus models

  616. that he went off alone to pray. So yeah, it's good.

  617. But yeah, I thought, I thought your sermon was really helpful.

  618. I liked how you talked about. I just wrote down mysteries of

  619. the mysteries of, of, of Christ. I don't know if you you said

  620. mystery at the end. Yeah.

  621. But it wasn't in my notes, actually.

  622. OK, but it kind of came out because it is in the passage,

  623. right? Yeah.

  624. But it I mean, the mystery of Christ is really like the

  625. gospel. Right, it's it's him revealing

  626. himself to us, right. So anytime you see that Paul

  627. talks about the mysteries of this of the gospel a lot and he

  628. basically just saying this mysterious thing that God would

  629. do this, right? Like that's the that's the

  630. mystery. It's not, it's not a mystery

  631. anymore. It's not, it's not like we can't

  632. figure it out. It's not like unsolved

  633. mysteries. Do you remember that show?

  634. I do. I love way before your times,

  635. but that gave me nightmares. That is a side note.

  636. That music at the beginning of that show gives me side notes.

  637. But that's not the mystery in the like in the in the Gospels,

  638. right? Or in the, in the epistles that

  639. Paul's talking about, he's talking about the Gospel, right?

  640. So. Yeah, and like, that's actually

  641. something I've been talking with my D Group A lot is like the

  642. mystery of Christ in the Old Testament 'cause we're back in

  643. the Old Testament, right? And like that, that was like

  644. everything in the Old Testament points to Christ.

  645. Yeah, right. Like Colossians, actually it's

  646. in chapter 2. It says these are a shadow of

  647. the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.

  648. Like everything in the Old Testament, like, was like a

  649. shadow of Christ. But now we get to see the true

  650. right thing that is casting the shadow, and that is Christ.

  651. And that's what that mystery is like.

  652. Yeah, exactly. You said yeah.

  653. Yeah, you got me thinking about how am I going to preach Christ

  654. from Nehemiah 7? So I'm just that's where my mind

  655. is right now. So anyway, pray for me.

  656. We'll we'll get there eventually.

  657. But yeah, Kyle, you want to say something?

  658. You look like you were going to say something.

  659. No, we're good. I just I've been reading this

  660. book and with Ryan. Oh wait, what are y'all reading?

  661. Yeah, we read this. Book, hang on, you guys have

  662. been talking about even JC Ryles, a Puritan, Yeah, maybe

  663. Presbyterian, I don't know. Yeah.

  664. Then you got you've been you quoted like Chapter Spurgeon for

  665. like 7 things 17 times in this podcast.

  666. You you're quoting Timothy Keller anecdote.

  667. Presbyterian, Yeah, anyway. And you were going to talk about

  668. another Presbyterian, I think. Spurgeon's a Baptist.

  669. Spurgeon is a Baptist. Yeah, yeah.

  670. It was. I was going to talk about this

  671. book we've been reading called Daily Doctrine, Daily Doctrine

  672. by Kevin Deyoung. And also press, I mean also

  673. press material that's. True.

  674. Wow, fair enough. I'm just being silly.

  675. Yeah, I was going to say, it's not like it matters.

  676. Takes all. Kinds, right?

  677. They're all Christian evangelical Christians.

  678. Heaven, Christ is our center. I think that's all that matters.

  679. Yeah, but like I was, we were reading it together and it's

  680. interesting talking about like the mysteries of Christ.

  681. We just read a whole chapter about like the attributes of

  682. God. Well, tell us what the book is

  683. first. Yeah, that's a good point.

  684. So the the book is a it's like a devotional style book where each

  685. day there's meant to be a reading and instead of it being

  686. a specific Bible verse or a Bible like an excerpt from the

  687. Scripture, it's a theological idea or point.

  688. So it's a systematic theology essentially.

  689. So he's taking systematic theology and breaking it up into

  690. like bite size daily doctrinal. Daily doctrinal points.

  691. So Daily Doctrine really good, yeah.

  692. It's helpful five days a week, like it's.

  693. So it's 260 as well, Yeah. Yeah, so it's good.

  694. I've really enjoyed it. But one of the things he

  695. mentioned this week was talking about the attributes of God.

  696. Attributes of God talking about the incommunicable and the

  697. communicable ones, right Incommunicable being like the

  698. traits that are for God alone that he possesses things like

  699. omnipotence, omniscience, and then the communicable ones.

  700. Well, actually, we can talk about it later and then the

  701. communicable ones, which are like the ones that we can share.

  702. And so like Lovejoy peace, those kinds of things.

  703. And one of the things he mentions about is is attribute

  704. that God has, which is like that he's the invisible God, right?

  705. That he is invisible, not because he's like, you know,

  706. this one transparent ether, but that to define him by the space

  707. in which that he resides. It would just it wouldn't be

  708. comprehensible. Like he transcends space and

  709. time in a way that we cannot fathom.

  710. I don't know why, but you said mysteries of Christ and that

  711. just I thought of that. No, it is.

  712. That is actually like, that's the thing about God.

  713. It's like when you start to think on him, Yeah, you realize

  714. really quickly that you will never exhaust the amount of

  715. thinking that you can do. Yeah, to understand.

  716. And you will not understand at all.

  717. And I think that's that to me is like, it's beautiful.

  718. And I I mean that it's it should do what it should do is it

  719. should cause us to be humble. Yes.

  720. And not proud. Yeah.

  721. And to worship, that's right. And to pray, like to know that

  722. this deity, this invisible otherworldly expanse of God

  723. hears you. Yeah.

  724. And like enjoys hearing from you seemingly, which is and loves

  725. you. I don't know.

  726. It's just like it should make it should make you want to pray all

  727. the more. Like, that's something that I

  728. thought too, even going through your sermonette last night was I

  729. was like, man, I just, I have to say this sermonette, I'm sorry.

  730. Because yours are so long less. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

  731. That's right, yeah. But like going through Ryan?

  732. Follows instructions? Oh, not so much.

  733. Yeah, it's true. But going through that, just

  734. thinking about like how much of A desire I want to pray more

  735. with the context of knowing who God is, the attributes of God

  736. that we read about in this book this week, and then hearing

  737. about his desire for us to pray. It's, it's humbling, but it also

  738. makes me want to draw closer to it, to him in, in, in our, in my

  739. communication. Yeah, for sure.

  740. No, it's good. What have you been thinking

  741. about Daily Doctrine? It's it's really good.

  742. Yeah. It's a great book learning a lot

  743. and a lot of these things are like going over my head a bit.

  744. Like he definitely used some big words like it is systematic

  745. theology, but it's it's not unattainable for for like the

  746. the layperson, I guess, right. And, and really the one thing

  747. that like, you know, you hear people say like, oh, theology

  748. divides and it's not important, whatever we're doctrine divides,

  749. but like learning about God, like that's what theology is.

  750. It's the study of God, right? And it, it really should just

  751. drive us to worship God, right. And I, that's what I've been,

  752. I've been noticing, like reading about the attributes of God or

  753. like learning just about theology, why it's important.

  754. It just like it starts to make you realize like, like you said,

  755. like you are God. I'm not like, thank you, Lord,

  756. for everything. Like, yeah, you start to realize

  757. how small you are in a good way, right?

  758. In a way of like, man, I'm so glad that you're God.

  759. Yeah. Well, and something I really

  760. appreciated about it too, is because is that like you said,

  761. he's the author of this book is Presbyterian.

  762. Jonah, you I'm pointing, sorry, like Jonah mentioned that he is

  763. Presbyterian. So there are things on a

  764. theological level that I disagree with him.

  765. And even in the past, the chapters this week, there are

  766. things he said where I was like, I don't know about that.

  767. But the beautiful thing about it is that theology is meant to be

  768. explored in a way where even if you're not 100% sure or agree

  769. with a person's take on something, learn more, right?

  770. Dive deeper and you know what? And like, maybe you'll come to a

  771. truth or some sort of revelation that maybe this author or

  772. speaker isn't Privy to that changes the perspective on

  773. things. Yeah, the thing about theology

  774. and when you start to study theology is you are studying

  775. God, Yeah, who we cannot fully comprehend.

  776. No. Therefore, you're going to be

  777. challenged. And so you have to be, you have

  778. to be ready for that. And if you're not willing to be

  779. challenged, don't start reading theology books.

  780. Oh, 100%. Because even if you, even if you

  781. think you agree with someone that you're reading, you're

  782. going to find out that that there is something in there that

  783. that challenges you and actually makes you super uncomfortable

  784. and that you just like, you don't want to feel like, you

  785. know what I mean? Like, because honestly, that's

  786. what happens. You're studying the, the, the,

  787. yeah, the topic of study is incomprehensible.

  788. Yeah. On some level, right?

  789. Yeah. And so, like, there are things

  790. that we can understand. I'm not saying that he has

  791. revealed himself to us, which is a very, it's beautiful.

  792. Like God, the creator of the universe.

  793. I, I have a hard time saying the deity or the, this God or like,

  794. I don't know. I've, I've said it before too,

  795. like, but we are studying the one, the only right, the the

  796. everlasting, the God. And he has made the way, not a

  797. way for us to, to know him. He's made the way for us to know

  798. him. And that is, that is the word

  799. that we have. So, but you're studying so you

  800. can comprehend some things, but the things that are made clear,

  801. we need to understand it very clearly.

  802. And the things that are not made so clear, we can hold with sort

  803. of like loose, like grip and like say, yeah, there's tension

  804. there. Like like free will and the

  805. doctrine of predestination. There's tension there.

  806. They're both in the scriptures and we have to hold them loosely

  807. and say, OK, somehow little word makes it work together.

  808. And that is a mystery. Well, that's a.

  809. That's a Spurgeon quote. Why rectify 2 friends?

  810. Or why reconcile 2 friends? That's right.

  811. Yeah, they're already, they're already friends.

  812. And so, oh, there we go again, Spurgeon, one more time.

  813. Sorry, I was gonna say too like. Spurgeon's my favorite Baptist.

  814. It's fine other than other than yourself.

  815. Everybody loves themselves, right?

  816. So if you don't. I was gonna say like another

  817. quote, it goes perfectly. It's from Daily Doctrine.

  818. I don't remember what chapter this was in, but it's also it's

  819. Kevin Deyoung. He says that like in essentials

  820. unity, Yeah, in non essentials liberty, but in all things

  821. charity. Yeah.

  822. So we hold to the we hold to the essential of the gospel, of the

  823. person, of Jesus, of the triune God, in a way that we are

  824. unified behind those. Things, yeah.

  825. And that's one actually, we make that point in our first steps

  826. class. So if you're listening and you

  827. haven't taken first steps, that is the first thing we talk about

  828. is, is like holding things that are very important.

  829. Like there are some things we have to agree on in order to

  830. like have fellowship together. Yeah.

  831. Everything else we can sort of like just be charitable with

  832. each other. Well, and same thing with and

  833. then it goes like into the non essentials liberty, right.

  834. But like, you know, we talked with the tension with the free

  835. will and the the model of predestination that people hold

  836. to no one is really certain on how they work, how they work

  837. together, how they're reconciled.

  838. And so we can have liberty with that.

  839. We can we can be kind to one another.

  840. Exactly. We have our understandings

  841. because none of us have the full answer or no.

  842. And then lastly, in all things charity, be charitable on it.

  843. All right, Like in all the disagreement and all of like the

  844. seeming ways that we can find disunity, be charitable to one

  845. another, give each other the benefit of the doubt, I think

  846. that that's probably the best way to operate, right?

  847. Yeah, it should be. Well, and like we do all things

  848. in love, right? Like, yeah, there's so many

  849. passages in Scripture, like First Corinthians 13 is the

  850. famous love chapter. And there's so many other

  851. passages that just like talk about loving your brother.

  852. Like even Paul talks about loving his loving the weaker

  853. brother. Like if it means that I won't

  854. even meet again, I'll I'll do it.

  855. It's like he does anything to make sure that people love God.

  856. Yeah, right. And like, I'm like, even between

  857. us three, I'm sure there's something that we could disagree

  858. on. Oh yeah, and if there's not I'll

  859. I will encourage anyone to ride in the car with Kyle for six.

  860. Days. To I.

  861. Was gonna say shortly after this is like done recording.

  862. We're gonna, we're just gonna start fighting.

  863. That's. Oh no, we're not.

  864. I'm just. Joking.

  865. I'm joking. I'm joking.

  866. But yeah, like there's, there's always something.

  867. But like we always are rooted in the gospel.

  868. Right where the. Roots are and everything that

  869. comes out of that is just good conversation.

  870. Yeah, for sure. That's good.

  871. I like the book too. I've been reading it.

  872. I'm behind you guys. You have.

  873. Yeah, I'm behind you guys. But yeah, it's really good.

  874. Joe and I, we, we have always, we always have big plans and

  875. we're going to do this together. We're going to read this book

  876. together and like then we have a million other things that pop up

  877. and we put that on the back. Burner such as the life of a

  878. pastor, though, right? Happens.

  879. Yeah, things happen. So on that note, we're at like

  880. 40 minutes in our podcast now, so that's good.

  881. But on that note, we talked about things happening.

  882. We had Pastor Jake is away this week, Joe is away this week.

  883. Joe had a planned vacation and then Pastor Jake had an

  884. unexpected emergency of the death in the in Anna's family.

  885. And so yeah, I'll, I'll just take a minute or two and we'll

  886. pray and we'll conclude the episode.

  887. Is that OK with you guys? Yeah.

  888. Any other comments before we conclude?

  889. Well, any anything on your sermon?

  890. No, not yet. Teaser.

  891. No, it's Monday. I just found out I was preaching

  892. yesterday. So he.

  893. Just finished writing it. No, yeah, it's it is a hard

  894. chapter there. The 1st 4 verses are the only

  895. narrative and then it just runs right into a list of names and

  896. numbers. And so it will be interesting.

  897. I will try my best to to to pull something out of it.

  898. I don't have to work really hard there.

  899. There is stuff there. All scripture is and that that's

  900. where I'm going to start is that Paul's instruction of Timothy

  901. that all Scott, all Scripture is profitable for for teaching.

  902. So we're going to learn that right now.

  903. Let me pray for just for our church and for Pastor Jake.

  904. Father, we are grateful. I'm grateful for Kyle and for

  905. Ryan for their willingness to come on and to fill in and just

  906. to have a conversation with them.

  907. It's always fun, but it's even more fun when when we can do it

  908. in a way that may build others up.

  909. And so where I pray that that would that that's what we've

  910. done today that we've we've been some sort of encouragement to

  911. someone who's listening the father right now.

  912. I just like, like we just mentioned that things come up in

  913. the life of any, anyone, but specifically in pastors lives.

  914. And, and I pray for, for Pastor Jake and for Anna, specifically

  915. for Anna now that that you would give their, her family comfort,

  916. that you would give them the ability to minister to others in

  917. the midst of their grief. But I pray for, for their

  918. travels and I pray for, for all the conversations that we had

  919. that they would be focused on, on giving the gospel each and

  920. every conversation that they have the ability to.

  921. And just like helping those in the family that they're, that

  922. they're seeing down in Texas, that they're just able to give

  923. comfort through the gospel, through what you've done through

  924. your son. And so Lord, we just, we, we

  925. grieve with them, but we also, we thank you for the opportunity

  926. that they have to, to go into, to be with their family and to,

  927. and to do that. And so I also pray for Pastor

  928. Joe as he's out on vacation. I pray that it's a restful time

  929. and that they, they all return safely.

  930. We just pray that you would be with our church, LAMC.

  931. Help us to love each other. Help us to to to be unified in

  932. the vision and to not be distracted so we could take

  933. Pastor Jake's message from Sunday to heart and then we

  934. won't let anything distract us from getting the gospel out into

  935. our community and beyond. I pray these things in Jesus

  936. name, Amen. Thanks for joining us.

  937. We will see you next week. Thanks.
