People Are Not Basically Good SEPTEMBER 6, 2026 Pastor Steven L. Anderson

Man, the title of my sermon this evening is,

man is not basically good.

Man is not basically good.

I remember when I was growing up in the 80s and 90s,

there was this really prominent teaching

that was constantly out there saying that,

you know, human beings are basically good, right?

People are good on the inside.

Everybody starts out good,

and it's just society that made them bad.

It's someone mistreated them,

something bad happened to them that made them bad.

Of course, this is very illogical

because if people are basically good,

where did this bad society come from

that's ruining everyone?

It doesn't really make a lot of sense

since the society consists of people.

But this worldview is very prevalent today as well.

This idea that people are good,

there's good in everyone, everyone can be fixed,

and you know, people are nice.

We just have to put them in the right environment.

We just have to give them the right teaching

and everything's gonna be great.

Hey, the Bible teaches the opposite of this.

The Bible teaches that people are inherently bad.

And you know, another way of saying this

is that the default setting for humans is to do wrong.

It's to do bad, it's to be evil, it's to be wicked,

and we have to be taught to do well.

We have to be trained to do well.

And really, at the end of the day,

even with all the teaching and with all the training,

the only way we're truly going to be good in this world

is through the power of the Holy Spirit,

through the transformative power of being saved

by believing in Jesus Christ, the new creature,

the new man, the inward man is really the only way

to ultimately transcend our sinful nature.

And then even then, we're still gonna have a battle

every day with the flesh.

The old man can never be totally eradicated.

And so every day we've got to put on the new man,

put on the Lord Jesus Christ.

Now, when we go back to Genesis here,

go back to chapter six, if you would,

you see that this teaching comes very early in the Bible.

You don't have to read very far

to get to this understanding of the sinfulness

of humanity.

Look at Genesis chapter six.

This is, of course, leading up to the flood

and talking about the condition that the world was in

that led to God flooding the whole earth.

And it says in verse number five,

and God saw that the wickedness of man

was great in the earth,

and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart

was only evil continually.

I mean, that's a pretty strong statement

to just say, you know, God looks down

and he's just like, man, people are just bad

all day, every day.

People are just thinking evil thoughts,

the imagination, and the thoughts of man's heart

is only evil continually.

And I have a question for you, you know,

is this some other species of man?

You know, is this Neanderthal man or something?

No, these are the exact same human beings

that we are today.

This is just because they've gone downhill

as a society and gotten worse, worse, worse

to the point where God looks down

and it's just, wow, every imagination

of the thoughts of man's heart is only evil continually.

And then only Noah does he find righteous

and Noah finds grace in his sight,

meaning that obviously Noah's not perfect,

Noah's still a sinner, but he finds grace

in the eyes of the Lord.

At least he is somewhat doing right before the flood.

Now go to After the Flood, Genesis chapter eight.

And remember, you know, God has just flooded

the entire world just to eradicate

the unbelievable evil that has built up

from just humans, just getting worse and worse

and just being so evil.

He eradicates everyone and just gets to the point

where it's just Noah and seven other people on the Ark.

It's just Noah, Noah's wife, his three sons

and their three wives.

These are the only people, these people get off the Ark,

this one family, the best family in the world,

the only family that even gets spared

the catastrophe of the flood.

And it says this in verse 21,

the Lord smelled a sweet saver.

Why?

Because Noah is offering up burnt offerings under the Lord.

Noah smelled a sweet saver and the Lord said in his heart,

so he's not saying this to humans,

this is just his thought process up in heaven.

The Lord says in his heart,

I will not curse the ground anymore for man's sake.

He said, I'm not going to again curse the ground

anymore for man's sake,

for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth.

So even just as a blanket statement about humanity,

even after you've wiped out all the worst people

and you've whittled it down to the best family,

you still have this to say here

that man's heart is evil from his youth.

The imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth.

So this doesn't sound to me like a learned behavior

necessarily because it's from his youth.

It's like he starts out being sinful

and has wicked imaginations.

And again, this is not some other species of man here.

There's only one kind of human and it's you, it's me,

it's all of us.

What does the Bible say much later?

Thousands of years later.

It says in Jeremiah 17.9,

the heart is deceitful above all things

and desperately wicked, desperately wicked.

And that's talking about the heart of man in general.

Who can know it?

I, the Lord, search the heart.

I try the reigns even to give every man according

to his ways and according to the fruit of his doings.

Let's go to the New Testament.

How about Mark chapter seven?

Flip over if you were to mark chapter seven in the Bible.

And so we see that, you know,

the heart is deceitful above all things.

The apostle Paul, arguably the greatest Christian

who ever lived said in Romans chapter seven,

I know that in me that is in my flesh,

dwelleth no good thing.

He says, man, I look at myself, I look at my flesh,

I look in my heart and I see sinfulness, wickedness.

Now look, there are a lot of holier-than-thous out there.

There are a lot of people out there

that think that they're so wonderful and sinless.

But at the end of the day, if we're honest,

we know that we all have sinful tendencies,

sinful proclivities.

We know that we all have a sinful nature.

We know that if we were to just kind of just

let ourselves go and just do whatever,

it would not be pretty.

This is why we need to be saved,

number one, so that we can go to heaven,

but number two, so that we can also transcend

our sinful flesh and actually live a good life.

Not perfect, but at least we can live a good life

in all godliness and honesty

and really become a better person.

Look at Mark chapter seven, verse 20.

This is Jesus talking.

He said, that which cometh out of the man,

that defiles the man.

And again, what's this wisdom of,

oh man's basically good, it's just society

that's ruining man?

It's saying that something external

is coming in and corrupting man.

But what the Bible is actually saying

is that nothing that goes into the man is defiling

and it's what comes out of the man that defiles him.

Meaning that man is the source of the wickedness

out of man, that is what defiles him.

And again, this is also related to the idea

of the quote, noble savage, right?

The noble savage idea that basically people

who are outside of civilization

just kind of living in nature,

here's another way to say it,

living like animals,

that people who are just kind of primitive

and living like animals

are somehow superior to those of us

who actually live in cities

and eat actual cooked food or whatever.

But the idea here is that,

oh, the noble savage, he's living in harmony

and he's a hunter-gatherer,

or his life was so good.

I mean, you'll see these articles every once in a while

that are like, oh, life was so much better

when we were hunter-gatherers.

It was just all leisure time.

And it's like, bro, that is a lie.

That is garbage.

If you look at these primitive societies,

I mean, they're living hand to mouth.

There's cannibalism.

They're mutilating themselves.

There's wickedness, perversion, super evil, okay?

So why?

Because it's from within the heart of man

that these problems come.

And so we could go out in the jungle

and live by ourselves,

but we're just gonna bring the problems with us.

And it's gonna get even weirder out in the jungle

because it's the law of the jungle out there, okay?

And so in Mark seven,

it says that which comes out of the man,

that defiled the man from within.

So this isn't something that you have to be taught.

You have to be exposed to.

You have to see it on TV.

You have to hear it on the radio.

You have to see it on the internet.

And a lot of times kids will do something bad.

It's like, where did they get this?

Where are they getting this?

Well, I'll tell you where they're getting it.

A lot of the times is they're getting it

from the inside, from within.

That's what the Bible says,

that from within out of the heart of man

proceed evil thoughts, adulteries,

fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness,

deceit, lasciviousness and evil eye,

blasphemy, pride, foolishness.

All these things come from within and defiled the man.

And so you don't have to teach kids any of these things.

They don't have to pick up these habits anywhere.

These come built in.

These are just software that's just pre-installed

from the factory that these type of things

are the type of things that humans get into, unfortunately.

Okay, this is what the Bible say.

I mean, Jesus is very clear here.

This is what's being taught

that human beings are not basically good.

They're not innately good.

They don't get corrupted by bad things externally

as much as they are corruptors corrupting themselves

and everyone around them

from the wickedness of their own heart.

Go if you would to Ephesians chapter two.

Ephesians chapter number two.

And again, you know, this makes a huge difference

in how you look at life and how you look at the world,

whether you have this worldly philosophy

that humans are basically good

and everybody's really a nice person.

If we could just, you know,

maybe we could just sit down with Kim Jong-un

and just kind of hang out

and he's probably a pretty cool guy.

Maybe Dennis Rodman and Kim Jong-un

and we could all sit down and just kind of talk.

And, you know, if we would just sit down and talk to homos,

we'd get to like them a little bit

and then we'd go sit down with communist dictators

and, you know, African warlords

and, you know, I don't know drug cartel kingpins.

And, you know, at the end of the day,

you know, we're all just kind of nice people

and we could probably all sit down

and have a meal together and have a few laughs

or something.

Folks, this is the way a lot of people

are looking at the world today

and they're wrong.

Okay, what the Bible teaches

is that people are by default bad

and that we need the Lord Jesus Christ.

We need the Holy Spirit.

We need the Bible.

We need the moral laws of scripture.

We need the epistles of Paul.

We need the book of Revelation.

We need the whole book to straighten us out.

And we spend our lives meditating on the word of God,

attending church, following the precepts of the Bible,

praying and speaking to ourselves

and Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs

and it's going to make us a better person.

Whereas if we're just left to our own devices,

we're going to go down a downward spiral of morality

and as our country gets de-Christianized,

it's not going to become a better place,

a more godly place.

No, it's going to get worse.

You know, and the more that we embrace the Lord

and the gospel, the better we're going to be

because the sinful nature is the problem.

Look at Ephesians chapter two verse one

and you had the quick end

who were dead in trespasses and sins,

wherein in time pass you walked

according to the course of this world,

according to the prince of the power of the air,

the spirit that now work in the children of disobedience.

Of course we're talking about the devil.

Among them also, we all had our conversation

in time pass in the lusts of our flesh,

fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind

and we're watched this by nature,

the children of wrath, even as others.

By nature, we were the children of wrath before we got saved

and we were walking according to the course of this world.

You think about the word course, things run their course

and the world is kind of running a certain way

and we were kind of going that same way

and really the God of this world, quote unquote,

is the devil and we were fulfilling his will

and we were by nature, children of disobedience,

children of wrath, right?

But then when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ

by grace through faith, now we are saved,

we're a new creature in Christ,

old things are passed away,

behold all things are become new.

This is the answer for actually getting things right

in your life, okay?

Not just hey, we just gotta meditate and look within

and empty our minds and get in a tree pose

and say ohm or whatever.

That's not gonna do it friend.

You know what we need to be doing is being renewed

in the spirit of our mind,

the washing of the water by the word is what we need.

So that's what the Bible's teaching there

in Ephesians chapter two, flip over to Romans chapter three,

Romans chapter three and of course in Romans 512,

we have the famous verse where for us by one man,

sin entered into the world and death by sin

and so death passed upon all men for that all have sinned.

We all inherited the sinful nature from Adam

and therefore every single person on this planet

themselves they have sinned, right?

It's not that we're being punished for Adam's sin,

it's that we all individually ourselves have sinned,

our own sins that we are responsible for.

But look at Romans chapter three verse nine,

it says what then?

Are we better than they?

No and no wise.

For we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles

that they are all under sin.

And are we better than they is saying,

hey are the Jews better than the Gentiles?

Hey are the Gentiles better than the Jews?

And the answer is of course no

because we before proved both Jews and Gentiles

that they are all under sin.

As it is written, there is none righteous, no not one.

Verse 11, there's none that understand it,

there's none that seek it after God,

they are all gone out of the way,

they are together become unprofitable,

there is none that do with good, no not one.

Okay, there's not an exception to this,

no not one, not even one.

Remember when the rich young ruler comes to Jesus

and he says good master what good thing shall I do

that I may inherit eternal life?

And he says why callest thou me good?

There's none good but one that's God.

Only God is good.

Now Jesus Christ is of course good

because Jesus Christ is God.

Jesus Christ is God in the flesh.

God was manifest in the flesh and dwelt among us

and we beheld his glory the glorious

of the only begotten of the father full of grace and truth

and the beginning was the word, the word was with God,

the word was God and the word was made flesh

and dwelt among us.

And so Jesus Christ was good.

And it's funny because Jehovah's Witnesses

will show you that verse to try to tell you

that Jesus is not God

because he says why callest thou me good?

There's none good but one and that's God.

And then I say to the Jehovah's Witnesses,

are you saying that Jesus isn't good?

Oh no, he's good.

Well, didn't Jesus just say,

well, why callest thou me good?

There's none good but one and that's God.

Sounds to me like he's either saying that he's not good

or he's saying that he's God.

Well, which one makes the most sense?

Well, we know Jesus is good.

He went about doing good.

He was tempted at all points

like as we are yet without sin.

He said I'm the good shepherd of the sheep.

And so I would say Jesus is good because he's God.

But guess what?

I'm not God, you're not God and we're not good.

None of us is good.

Not even one, no, not one, no exception.

That's what not even one, no, not one,

that's what that means.

No exceptions.

We're all sinners.

There's none to do with good, no, not one.

It says their throat is an open sepulcher.

With their tongues they've used to see

the poison of asps is under their lips

whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.

So he's saying look, human beings by nature, right?

This is their nature is that out of their mouth

is just proceeding just death, rot.

You think about an open sepulcher

and I haven't had a lot of experience

with dead bodies, thank God.

But I remember, here's a weird story for you.

When I was a kid, my friend's hamster died

and we went and we buried the hamster, okay?

And we buried it under this giant like power line thing

or whatever just so that we would kind of know

where we buried it, I guess.

And then you know, just nine, 10, 11 year olds are,

they don't, what's going on in their minds?

I'll tell you what's going on.

The Bible says foolishness is bound

in the heart of a child.

The rod of correction will drive far from.

So I was 10 years old and you know,

we buried this hamster, we had a little funeral for it

and then a few months later,

I don't know what came over us because we're stupid

because we just decided let's go dig it up

and just kind of check on it, you know?

And so the coffin was a Ziploc box

because you know the Ziploc bags come in a little box,

kind of pull them out.

So basically the bag was the body bag, you know?

Get him a body bag, you know?

So we put the hamster in the bag

and then we put the bag in the box

and then that was kind of the coffin

and then we buried it.

And then for some strange reason

we decided to do a little science, I guess you could call it

and we decided to dig it up, check it out,

see how decomposition was doing

and we did that and we opened it up

and it was one of the worst smells that I've ever smelled.

It was just this horrific, disgusting, gross stench

and kids please do not try this at home.

You can get diseased or whatever

but it was gross, it smelled horrible.

And you know what, that's an open sepulcher, you know?

It's just saying like just gross stench

coming out of your mouth.

What's that talking about?

It's just talking about just the horrible things

that people say.

Their throat is an open sepulcher, right?

Just this horrific, gross, horrible things

come out of people's mouths.

It says with their tongues they've used deceit

so it's not just saying things

that are just gross and horrible.

It's also just constant lying and deceiving.

The poison of asps is under their lips

whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness, right?

Just hateful and hating one another

just unloving, not compassionate,

implacable, unmerciful type of attitude

and specifically we're talking about the mouth.

Just people say horrible things, right?

And this is the default for humans.

It's not like, oh, this one guy has got a real problem

with the stuff that he says.

No, it's just like people in general

just say horrible things all the time

and it's really the exception

when somebody's got their mouth under control.

I mean, the Bible says that the tongue

is an unruly evil full of deadly poison.

The Bible says every kind of beast and of birds

and of serpents and of things in the sea

is tamed and have been tamed of mankind,

but the tongue can no man tame.

It's an unruly evil full of deadly poison, right?

And so the idea is that people's tongues

in general are out of control.

James chapter three is acting like,

well, nobody has this totally under control.

Nobody.

There's none that do a good no, not one.

So that's just the sins of the mouth,

the sins of the tongue.

But then it says their feet are swift to shed blood.

It's not just that humans say bad things,

it's that humans are actually violent as well.

Their feet are swift to shed blood,

meaning that they don't even think about it.

They don't even hesitate in many cases.

There are some people in this world

that are just super violent

and they're just swift to shed blood.

It's like they're not even gonna have to stop

and, you know, prevaricate.

It's just, nope, just swift to shed blood

and it says destruction and misery are in their ways.

They're just destroying things, causing misery.

The way of peace they've not known.

There is no fear of God before their eyes

and we see this all the time

where people just seem to have no fear of God.

There's just no thought of the consequences

of breaking God's laws.

It's just not even something on the radar.

And it says in verse 19,

now we know that what things so ever the law say

that say it to them who are under the law,

that every mouth may be stopped

and that all the world may become guilty before God.

He's saying, look, this Psalm is not being written to heathen

to tell them how bad they are.

The things that the law say it,

it say it to them that are under the law.

I mean, this is being written to Jews as well.

It's being written to the nation of Israel.

I mean, God's word, the book of Genesis

where it talks about man's heart being wicked

and his imagination being wicked.

Jeremiah the prophet, where was he preaching?

I mean, he's preaching to the nation of Judah.

He's preaching to the children of Israel.

And it says we know that what so ever things the law say it,

it say it to them who are under the law

that every mouth may be stopped

and that all the world may become guilty before God.

Jews, Gentiles alike, all the world guilty before God.

Therefore by the deeds of the law,

there shall no flesh be justified in his sight

for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

I mean, the law is just showing you that you're sinful.

It can't justify you.

You can't use the law to be saved.

You can't use the Ten Commandments to be saved.

The Ten Commandments are going to damn you

because you have broken them.

You have violated them.

God's law is gonna show you how sinful you are.

And then a little bit later he's gonna say,

therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith

without the deeds of the law.

That's salvation.

It's by faith, not by works.

So if you would go back to Isaiah chapter 26,

Isaiah 26 · chapter mention

Isaiah chapter number 26.

And so this is not hard to prove from the Bible.

But yet this is not the belief that's out there in our world.

You know, our world just has this attitude of just,

hey, people are basically good, humans are nice,

and we just have to, if we just treat them nice,

they're gonna treat us nice back.

If we just put them in a good environment,

they're gonna thrive.

It's just these bad environments.

You know, why is there so much crime in the ghetto?

Well, it's just because the ghetto, right?

It's the ghetto's fault, you know?

It's that environment.

It's poverty that's causing them to do these crimes, right?

That's what they'll say, things like that.

They'll blame the environment.

They'll blame the family.

They'll blame religion.

They'll blame whatever, culture.

Look, at the end of the day,

if you wanna know who's to blame

for the sin in your life,

just go look in the mirror, that's who the problem is.

It's you, it's me.

We all have that sinful nature,

that sinful heart that we need to take care of

by walking in the spirit

in order to transcend that and do better.

And look, the cultures and the places in this world

that have thrived the most and succeeded the most

are all Christian cultures, you know?

And I mean, look, I wanna know

what the big major exception to that is,

because if you stop and think about it,

you know, Christian countries are the countries

that have been the most successful and thrived.

And you might say, well, you know,

Japan is a really clean and nice place and whatever.

Okay, that's because Japan has been Americanized

by the United States of America who conquered them

and then they bought into our way of life in a lot of ways.

So unfortunately, they didn't get the Christianity.

Unfortunately, you know,

they haven't been evangelized very well, unfortunately.

You know, it would have been great if after World War II,

we could have just sent a whole bunch of missionaries

in there and gotten a ton of people saved

and had a big revival and got everybody worshiping

the Lord Jesus Christ.

We didn't do that, but you know,

we still at least Americanized them, you know?

And so, and they have problems themselves.

They're having problems right now anyway.

But the point is though, that, you know,

you look at the Muslim world,

you look at the Hindu world,

you look at the Buddhist world

and you know, frankly,

it's probably not somewhere that you wanna live.

And you know, you like living in America.

You know, because America was founded

and you know, for many, many years,

the predominant religion in America

has been evangelical Christianity

and that goes all the way back to 1776, you know?

Obviously in the 1600s,

you had, you know, your Protestant denominations,

but by the end of the 18th century,

the Protestant mainline denominations

were already struggling and shrinking

and the booming religions or Baptists and Methodists,

which is basically the precursors

of today's evangelical Christianity.

And so we're talking 250 years now

of just evangelical Christianity

being the main religion.

Now then, of course, in the late 1800s,

you had all of this wave of Catholic immigration

and so, you know, starting in the mid to late 1800s,

yeah, you had tons of Catholic immigrants

coming from Ireland and Italy and Germany

and all these Catholic places.

And then, of course, you know,

we absorbed the Southwest United States,

which is formerly Mexico

and so we brought in a lot of Catholicism that way.

So now Catholicism is pretty big,

but it wasn't in the beginning

and still in America, though,

the main culture is evangelical Christianity.

That's why America is a pretty nice place

because you got tons of saved people in America.

And look, when we go out soul winning and knock doors,

I mean, virtually every single time I go soul winning,

almost without exception,

I always run into people who are already saved, right?

I mean, when you go door knocking,

you're constantly gonna knock the door of people

who already have all the right answers.

They, you know, they maybe go to a Baptist church,

go to a non-denom church,

go to a Protestant church or whatever,

but they'll give you a really solid answer

of salvation's by grace through faith

and I can't lose my salvation.

Virtually every single time you go soul winning.

Well, guess what?

There are other places in the world.

Yeah, it's not gonna be that way.

If you go soul winning in other countries,

you're not necessarily gonna run

into that many saved Christians.

There are like 50 million people in America

who identify as Baptist.

Okay, that's a lot of people.

And so we've got a lot of salt

and a lot of light in this country,

but that's why our country is,

you know, a pretty nice place to live for the most part

compared to a lot of places.

But unfortunately, that doesn't stop wicked people

in our country from just being super evil

and wicked, even in a so-called Christian nation.

Now the Bible says in Isaiah chapter 26 verse nine,

Isaiah 26 · chapter mention

it says,

And so what's the Bible saying?

You know, when God's judgments are in the earth,

when the Bible is available,

when the Bible is in your language,

when the Bible is mass produced and printed

and given to the masses,

then the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.

I mean, we learn righteousness from the word of God.

That's where the good, right, true morality

comes from, the Bible, okay?

But then he kind of tempers that

with the next statement in verse 10,

let favor be showed to the wicked,

yet will he not learn righteousness?

In the land of uprightness will he deal unjustly

and will not behold the majesty of the Lord?

He doesn't behold the majesty of the Lord.

He doesn't see it.

Just whoop, right over his head, okay?

So there are wicked people in this world

and what's the Bible saying?

There's nothing you can do to fix these people.

You can put them in the perfect environment

and they're just gonna screw it up.

And by the way, you know,

the importance of this worldview

also has to do with what's happening in America right now.

There's an agenda right now.

There's a satanic evil agenda to ruin America, okay?

By flooding America with a bunch of Muslim,

third-worlder, illiterate people

to come ruin our country.

And the same thing is happening in Europe

on an even much grander scale.

And the idea is that basically wicked forces,

evil people just wanna open the floodgates

of just bringing in a bunch of heathen hordes

that are not Christian.

Look, we want our country to be as Christian as possible.

Why do we want it to be as Christian as possible?

For one reason, because we want to live

a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

That's why.

Look, obviously we wanna reach unsaved people

with the gospel.

We love to go to the mission field

and get people saved.

And look, if heathen people come here,

we wanna win them to Christ.

We wanna give them the gospel.

We wanna try to reach the immigrants who come here

that are non-Christian, get them saved.

But let's face it, the Catholics need to get saved.

They're not saved.

They don't believe the gospel.

They're a bunch of idolatrous pagans.

They're not Christian.

There's tens of millions of them, right?

And so look, we got plenty of people

to preach the gospel to at home.

We got plenty of missions, trips, opportunities abroad.

That we wanna do, yeah, we wanna get people saved.

But at the end of the day, you know what else we want

besides just being able to win people to Christ?

You know, what we also wanna be able to do

is to go to bed at night and not worry about anything.

Amen?

I mean, doesn't it feel good to just get in your bed

and just lay down and go to sleep

and just not worry about anything?

We take that for granted in America, right?

There are places where that's not the case.

Whereas we feel pretty good, don't we?

I mean, I don't know,

maybe you're living in a really weird neighborhood,

but like in general, it feels pretty good

to just go to bed at night, window open,

not worried about anything, going on a walk.

You don't mind taking your wife on a walk

at nine o'clock, 10 o'clock, 11 o'clock at night,

walking around the neighborhood.

You don't care, you're not worried about it.

Why?

Because we live in a pretty safe area,

a pretty safe country.

You know, we don't have to worry about

all kinds of just rape and pillage and murder

and savagery going on and blood in the streets, do we?

You know, we live in a nice place,

but you know what, we wanna keep it that way.

Amen?

And the problem is, if you just bring in millions of people

If you would flip over to Psalm 58,

and while you're turning there,

I'm gonna read for you from Proverbs 27, verse 22.

Proverbs 27:22

It says, though thou shouldest bray a fool

in a mortar among wheat with a pestle,

yet will not his foolishness depart from him.

And this is not archaic language.

It's just words that we don't use

because we don't use a mortar and pestle.

We tend to use the Cuisinard and the blender

and the air fryer and the whatever.

I don't use any of it.

So I'm just saying words, man.

I don't even know what these mean.

But I'm saying throughout history, though,

women have used, and apothecaries

have used the mortar and pestle.

And this is where you have the little round,

little doll, like a, what's it, dowel?

That's the word I'm looking for.

Sort of like a little rounded stone dowel.

And then you have this little round bowl

and they sit there.

And sometimes you'll see people use it today for medicine.

Like, you wanna grind up a pill, you throw the pill,

a rebuke enters more into a wise man

than a hundred stripes into a fool.

Meaning that you could just beat the fool to a pulp

Like he just never learns his lesson.

You just grind him in a mortar among wheat with a pestle.

You just bray him among wheat in a mortar with a pestle

and yet will his foolishness not depart from him.

Some folks, you just can't reach, okay?

What does the Bible say in Psalm 58 verse three?

The wicked are estranged from the womb.

They go astray as soon as they be born,

speaking lies, meaning that the trajectory

of their life is wicked from the beginning.

In many ways, all of us are on a bad trajectory at some point.

That's what Ephesians said, you know,

we were all the children of disobedience at some point,

but, you know, we got saved.

But what the Bible's not teaching

is that people are basically good

and then somehow society ruined them.

Now the apostle Paul says in Romans chapter seven,

he says, you know, I was alive without the law once.

But then the commandment came and sin revived and I died.

So Paul talks about being in a state of innocence

just because he didn't know right from wrong, right?

When a baby's born, they just don't know right from wrong.

So they're in a state of innocence, okay?

But then ultimately the commandment comes,

sin revives and they died

because of the fact that, you know,

they end up doing wrong.

Now is the commandment bad?

Commandment is good.

So is something bad, is something good working?

No, the evil's already there is the point

that the Bible is giving us,

that the wicked are estranged from the womb, okay?

And so the sin nature is there from day one.

And so when the commandment comes,

the reason that you die is because you end up sinning

because we all end up sinning because we're all human

and to be human is to have that sinful nature.

I hope that makes sense the way I explained it.

But he says in verse four their poison

is like the poison of a serpent.

They are like the deaf adder that stoppeth her ear

which will not harken to the voice of charmers,

charming never so wisely.

And the idea here is that there are snake charmers

in this world, right?

And basically, you know, the little

do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do.

The little cobra's like coming out of the basket.

I don't know if this is real

or if it's just a cartoon that I saw a lot,

but you know, it's definitely real in cartoons.

And so basically, you know, you have the snake

that's kind of like a trained snake.

You know, in the Bible does say every kind of beast

and of birds and of serpents and of things in the sea

is tamed and hath been tamed of mankind.

And so you have then the idea here is,

you know, a snake that you just can't train.

You just, they just won't listen.

You could play so beautiful and so perfectly,

you could just charm never so wisely

and do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do.

You know, and it's just not gonna work.

Nothing gets through.

It's not your fault.

You're not playing the song wrong.

It's the snake is deaf.

You don't listen.

That's what it says, the deaf adder, right?

Psalm 58 verse four.

They're poisonous like the poison of a serpent.

They are like the deaf adder that stop it.

Her ear and it's not that they're just intrinsically

deaf, it's that they're choosing to be deaf.

They're stopping their ear.

They're not listening on purpose.

And there are people in this world like this

willfully ignorant.

They don't want truth.

They don't want to listen.

They don't care what the word of God says.

So what's the solution for these people?

Well, verse six, break their teeth.

You know what I'm just saying?

Like these people are trash, throw them in the trash.

Now, now obviously it's not for our place

to be violent as Christians.

We wrestle not against flesh and blood.

God does not call us to be violent whatsoever.

And we're supposed to just leave these things in God's hand.

That's why the Psalmist here is praying to God

and saying, break their teeth, oh God, in their mouth.

Break out the great teeth of the young lions.

Let them melt away as waters which run continually.

When he bended his bow to shoot his arrows,

let them be as cut in pieces.

As a snail which melteth,

let every one of them pass away.

And of course this is the proverbial,

if you put salt on a snail, it melts.

Another one of those science experiments,

and I use the word science very loosely,

digging up dead hamsters,

salting slugs, salting snails,

just the type of stuff that kids do.

And no, it wasn't just me,

so don't act like it was just me

who did that kind of stuff,

Every head bowed, every eyes closed.

both living in his wrath,

the righteous shall rejoice when he seeeth the vengeance,

he shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked,

so that a man may, shall say,

verily there is a reward for the righteous,

verily he is a God that judges the earth.

And I wanna just take a brief little rabbit trail here

on verses 10 and 11 to explain the apparent contradiction

between this verse and the verse that says,

hey, don't rejoice when your enemy stumbles,

don't rejoice when your enemy falls,

or the verse that says that God takes no pleasure

in the death of the wicked,

but rather that the wicked would turn from his way.

I think the way that both of these can be true,

because look, the right way to interpret the Bible

is to believe that all of it's true.

But the mistake that people make

is they usually just pick the one that they want.

If there's a seeming contradiction,

they pick the one they wanna ignore the other.

That's the wrong way to understand the Bible.

The right way is to synthesize both

and to say they're both true.

So the Bible on the one hand is telling us

God has no pleasure in the death of the wicked,

but rather that the wicked would turn from his way.

What the Bible is saying is,

God would prefer that people get right.

He's not just glad to punish people.

He'd much rather that they actually fixed it

and got right and didn't need the punishment.

Also, I believe that what the Bible is teaching us

is that we should not take a sadistic pleasure

in enjoying the suffering of others.

I don't think we should ever enjoy the suffering of others.

So if we see our enemy stumbling

and falling and being tortured

and going through horrible things,

we should not get any joy out of that.

We should not enjoy the bad things

that are happening to that person.

I think that that is taught in scripture.

We don't rejoice when our enemy falleth and whatever.

But here's the thing,

is that this verse though says,

the righteous shall rejoice when he sees the vengeance.

He shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked.

How do we reconcile these two thoughts?

Well, because the Bible here is saying

he's not rejoicing because he enjoys the suffering of others.

He's rejoicing because God is on his side.

God is going to bat for him.

And because what does it say next?

It says, so that a man shall say,

verily there's a reward for the righteous.

Verily he is a God that judges in the earth.

So what's this guy getting happy about?

He's not getting happy about like,

yeah, the enemies are just dying and suffering

and being destroyed.

Yeah, burn baby, burn.

That's a wrong attitude that we shouldn't have.

We need to control that celebration.

When our enemy stumbles or is destroyed,

we're not supposed to celebrate that.

We gotta control the celebration, okay?

But what it's saying is that we're celebrating

the fact that God has avenged us of our enemies.

So the celebration is,

wow, there is a reward for the righteous.

Wow, God is looking out for the righteous.

Well, God really is a God that judges in the earth.

You know, and you'll hear people sometimes facetiously,

even non-Christians, something good will happen

and they'll say what?

There is a God, right?

Who's heard people say that as like a joke or something?

You know, there is a God.

And obviously it's a little bit

of a taking of God's name in vain

if you're not even a Christian

and you're just kind of saying that as a joke or something.

But here's the thing,

obviously we already know that God exists.

So we're not gonna say there is a God,

but we're gonna say, hey, there is a God

that judges in the earth.

You know, hey, God really does care about what's going on.

God really is going to bat for his people.

There really is a reward for the righteous.

There really is a punishment for the wicked.

You know, it feels good to see justice served, right?

So if someone commits first degree murder,

you know, we wanna see that person get justice,

but that doesn't mean that we necessarily

wanna attend the execution, sit in the front row.

We're not just sitting there eating popcorn

and just watching them in the electric chair or what,

you know, just like, we don't get any joy

out of the actual carnage or suffering.

It's more just like, yeah,

I'm glad that justice was served.

Amen?

I don't think it's hard to reconcile these two ideas.

I think we can believe the whole Bible.

But what most of your bleeding heart liberals wanna do

is just ignore Psalm 58

and just only embrace the part that they like.

You know, or someone could go overboard the other way

and just go overboard on Psalm 58

and they just become this sadist

who just enjoys watching people, you know, tortured and killed

or some, you know, it's obviously that sick too.

So you gotta balance everything

that the Bible's teaching

and get an attitude that says,

well, we know the whole Bible's true,

so let's believe both.

Let's believe Psalm 58

and let's believe Romans chapter 12

and let's believe Proverbs telling us

not to rejoice when our enemy falls, et cetera.

So last place we're gonna turn is Romans chapter one.

Romans chapter one,

because what is the Bible teaching us here?

Man is not basically good.

Quick recap, Genesis six,

you know, the imaginations of the heart of man

is only evil continually.

He gets off the ark

and the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth.

Heart is deceitful from within come all the adulteries

and evil thoughts and thefts

and blasphemies and everything.

Ephesians two, we all were by nature,

children of disobedience, children of wrath.

We're all inheritors of that sin nature from Adam.

Our throat, the default mode for our throat

is open sepulchre, right?

Horrible, terrible things, deceit, lies,

hypocrisy, stupidity, foolishness, right?

Violence, humans are gonna be violent, destruction, misery.

And you know, there are some people

who obviously are gonna believe in Jesus Christ

and get these things right

and actually walk in the new man.

And then there are gonna be other unsaved people

who never get saved.

They don't have the Holy Spirit,

they don't have the new man,

but at least they're like surrounded

by so many saved Christians

that at least the culture is at least vaguely Christian.

And so then at least they will live a normal life

because they're just kind of shamed

into living a normal life

or they're just trying to kind of fit in with society

or they just develop good habits

because if you're just around people

you're gonna tend to act like they act

and live like they live.

And so you know, you're gonna control

some of those darker impulses or whatever.

But you take man out of that Christian society

and put them in the jungle

and it's gonna be cannibalism

and every horrific thing imaginable.

And then we also talked about the fact

that there are some people that just can't be reached.

These people just can't be fixed.

And you know, you can bram in a mortar

among wheat with a pestle.

You can put them in the land of uprightness.

You can show favor into them.

You can be nice to them.

Look, we all wanna overcome evil with good, amen.

We wanna turn our enemies into friends.

We wanna overcome evil with good

except there are a lot of people

that's just not gonna work.

It's gonna work for some people.

It's not gonna work for others.

We still need to try when we can

but at some point you just walk away

and say this person is incorrigible.

I'm casting my pearls before swine here.

This person is, you know, unfixable.

And of course, Romans chapter one

talks to us about people that get to a point

where they cannot be reached.

They cannot be fixed anymore.

This is what we know as the reprobate doctrine.

And this is another thing

that our society fails to grasp.

So not only do they have this wrong teaching

that says man is basically good,

they also have this other teaching

that even when people have been corrupted

and become evil, everyone can be fixed.

And by the way, this is why

many people are against the death penalty.

Now some people are against the death penalty

because they are just scared

that an innocent person's accidentally

gonna get the death penalty.

This argument doesn't really hold water

because wouldn't it be just as scary

to put an innocent person in prison for decades

or something?

I mean, obviously we never wanna condemn innocent people.

Okay, but there are some times

when you just know that the person did it,

there's no question, everybody knows they did it.

So what then?

What's the problem with the death penalty then?

And a lot of people, they hate the death penalty

because they have an idea of,

well, we can't just throw people in the trash,

we can fix everybody.

And by the way, in Germany,

I believe, help me out if I'm wrong,

didn't you say the maximum prison sentence

in Germany is 14 years?

It's like 14 years is like the max for any,

so you could just go on a killing spree

and it's like 14 years or something.

It's just like that's the max sentence.

So there's no life imprisonment,

there's no death penalty because the idea is,

because there's no death,

when was the last time they had the death penalty

in Germany?

Does it start with an A and end on Dolf Hitler?

Okay, so yeah, it's been a while.

So basically, the bottom line is no death penalty

and no life in prison because the idea is,

well, we can't put somebody in prison for life

because everybody can be fixed.

Can't kill them because everybody can be fixed.

We can fix everybody.

that have been convicted in court like 17 times

and then judges keep just releasing them?

who was killed on the train or the subway

that man's basically good

and they think we're gonna fix this guy.

Romans one, verse 18 says,

these are people, when they knew God,

they glorified him not as God, verse 21, right?

So it's like these people, they're exposed to truth,

they're exposed to the light, they knew God,

but they, it doesn't mean they're saved.

It's saying that they knew him,

meaning that they're aware of him,

they know who he is,

and yet they glorified him not as God.

They became vain in their imaginations,

and we read about those imaginations

back in Genesis six and eight, didn't we?

And their foolish heart was darkened,

so first they refused to glorify God,

they refused to respond to truth and be thankful,

and then now their foolish heart gets darkened,

passive voice there.

Professing themselves to be wise,

they became fools, on and on it goes.

Wherefore, verse 24, God gave them up to uncleanness.

And notice how it says,

God gave them up in verse 24.

Then it says in verse 26,

God gave them up unto vile affections.

And then it says in verse 28,

even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge,

God gave them over to a reprobate mind.

And so I don't understand how anybody can read this

and not see that God gave them up.

God gave them up.

God gave them up, and then it's like,

never give up on anyone.

Well, if we should never give up on anyone,

why did God give them up?

He says, look, these people

didn't even want to retain God in their knowledge.

Here's another way of saying that.

These people are done with God.

They're like, I don't even want to remember

that God even exists.

So they are like, I am totally done with God.

And the Bible says, even as

they did not like to retain God in their knowledge,

God gave them over to a reprobate mind

to do those things which are not convenient.

And the word reprobate simply means rejected, right?

And it is, you know, in Spanish,

reprobado, and it'll be used interchangeably

with rechisado, is that what it is?

Where are my Spanish speakers at?

Can I get a witness?

They're all gone.

They're all soul winning in a non-Spanish place.

But, you know, they are rejected.

That's what it means.

That's what the word means, you know?

And we could find it even in the King James,

Jeremiah 630.

Reprobate, silver, shall men call them

because the Lord has rejected them.

That's the first mention of the word reprobate in the Bible.

And so what is it saying?

It's saying they have ultimately and finally rejected God

and so God has ultimately and finally rejected them

even as they didn't want to retain God

in their knowledge.

Same way, God gave them over to a reprobate mind.

God gave them up.

God gave them up.

God gave them over.

And these people are doomed and they can't be reached.

That's what the Bible is saying.

And so, you know, again,

we've got to get our doctrine on this from the Bible.

It's important to,

and I know it's a very basic truth tonight,

but it's important that we hammer down

some of these basic truths

because they affect our worldview.

And we don't want to get this wrong worldview

where we start thinking of ourselves

more highly than we ought to think,

or we start to just think that human nature's good,

people are nice, everybody's great,

everybody's so wonderful and kind.

Folks, a lot of that is an illusion, right?

People will make themselves look a certain way,

they'll act a certain way,

but at the end of the day,

true righteousness comes from the Lord and the Lord alone.

And without the word of God,

without the Lord, without Jesus,

without the Holy Spirit,

you know, this world's a bad place

and people are very bad.

And thankfully, those of us that are saved,

you know, we can transcend that,

we can do better and we should want to do better

and we should say, man,

I don't want to be like this description in Romans three,

I don't want to be this horrible rotten person

being described in Psalm 14 or Psalm 53,

I want to be a good person.

And so what we got to do is take advantage

of what God has given us.

The Holy Spirit's indwelling,

the written word of God,

Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs,

the local church, the preaching of God's word.

We got to tap into all that stuff

and become better people.

And look, you want to fix America,

this is how you fix America,

you preach the gospel to every creature.

I mean, the more people we can get saved,

the better we're going to be as a country.

And then the more saved people we can get

right with God and living for God,

that's going to fix things too.

And also, it would also help to turn the tap off

and stop just flooding our country

with Saracen heathen hordes.

Because those people,

they're not bringing any godliness in here,

they're just bringing ungodliness.

And it's like, oh, well, we're going to fix all these people.

No, they're going to fix us.

They're going to break us, they're going to ruin us.

And so, hopefully our leaders will ultimately

not be as stupid as the leaders of the UK

and some of these other places

that have just let in the heathen hordes

for their own evil agenda,

because they hate Christianity,

they hate the Lord Jesus Christ.

Inspired is enough word of prayer.

Father, we thank you so much for your word, Lord.

Please help us to always be reading your words

so that we can get our worldview from the Bible, Lord,

and help us to realize, wow, if I get out of church,

if I don't read my Bible,

if I don't listen to preaching,

if I don't sing hymns and pray,

man, I could become a really rotten person.

We all could go down a dark path

if we don't walk in the Spirit.

So Lord, help us to put on the new man

and walk in the Spirit and die to self

and take up the cross daily and follow you.
