  1. Well, good morning, friends. This morning we're starting a new sermon series in the book of Acts.

  2. ! So would you turn with me to Acts chapter 1. Acts chapter 1. We're going to look at the first 14 verses of Acts chapter 1 today.

Acts 1 chapter mention Acts 1 chapter mention Acts 1 chapter mention

  3. So let me pray as we come to God's Word together. Father, we thank You for this morning. God, thank You for Your Spirit

  4. who dwells so powerfully among us, and thank You that He has given us a Word through which, God, You continue to speak.

  5. So as we come to Your Word this morning, Father, we ask that we would see not just truths to believe or things to do,

  6. but we pray that we would see You in all Your glory, that we would see Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ,

  7. in all of His beauty and grace, in all of His power and sovereignty,

  8. and that by Your Spirit we would be formed and transformed as followers of Him. We pray this in His mighty name. Amen.

  9. All right, Acts chapter 1. Let me read 1 through 14 for us.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  10. Acts begins like this.

  11. In the first book, O Theophilus, I've dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach

  12. until the day when He was taken up after He had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom He had chosen.

  13. He presented Himself alive to them after His suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.

  14. And while staying with them, He ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father,

  15. which, He said, you heard from Me, for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.

  16. So when they had come together, they asked Him,

  17. Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?

  18. He said to them, it is not for You to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by His own authority,

  19. but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you,

  20. and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth.

  21. And when He had said these things, as they were looking on, He was lifted up, and a cloud took Him out of their sight.

  22. And while they were gazing into heaven as He went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes and said,

  23. Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven?

  24. This Jesus who was taken up from you into heaven will come in the same way as you saw Him go into heaven.

  25. Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey away.

  26. And when they had entered, they went up to the upper room where they were staying,

  27. Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew,

  28. James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon the zealot, and Judas the son of James.

  29. All these, with one accord, were devoting themselves to prayer,

  30. together with the women and Mary, the mother of Jesus, and His brothers.

  31. Where are we going?

  32. Are we there yet?

  33. Are you sure we don't need to pull over and ask for directions?

  34. These are some typical questions you might hear on a family car ride.

  35. Of course, no one really asks for directions anymore, right?

  36. Because now we have GPSs on all of our phones.

  37. Now, of course, in the confines of a minivan, such questions can become a bit irksome.

  38. But on the whole, they are good questions.

  39. And not just when you're packed into the car for a weekend road trip.

  40. Where are we going?

  41. It's a good question to ask of one's life, is it not?

  42. And here we are this morning on the brink of a new season, right?

  43. For some of us, it's the start of a fresh semester at school.

  44. For others, you've moved to New Haven for the start of a new job.

  45. For others, you've welcomed the addition of a new family member.

  46. Perhaps you've just arrived to New Haven from another part of the country or another part of the world.

  47. Or perhaps you've been around for some time and are just feeling the air of newness as well.

  48. And in this season, it's right to be asking, where am I going?

  49. What am I going to be about?

  50. What direction will I take?

  51. And of course, it's not just a new season for many of us individually,

  52. but also for us as a church, it's the start of a new season.

  53. As another school year begins, it's another ministry year for us that's beginning.

  54. And so, for us now, it's right to be asking, where are we going?

  55. What are we going to be about?

  56. What are we going to be about?

  57. So, both individually and corporately, there's a great opportunity before us.

  58. An opportunity to set our sights afresh on what God will have us be and do.

  59. An opportunity to kind of get down to the essentials, to sort of clear the barnacles off the hull

  60. and to open up the sails and to hit the open water with fresh vigor and purpose and direction.

  61. You see, in any congregation and in any Christian's life, really, there's a danger of kind of falling into what we might call maintenance mode, right?

  62. Of settling into a kind of comfortable status quo.

  63. But what we see in the book of Acts is the church on a mission.

  64. A church that's not comfortable or complacent, but on the move.

  65. But, of course, the shift from kind of maintenance to mission is not easy, right?

  66. Often, we don't like change.

  67. We don't like to step out of our comfort zone.

  68. But, in addition, it can be a little dangerous.

  69. We can rush forward without the proper kind of biblical moorings and priorities.

  70. We can go forth with a frenetic urgency and passion and then quickly lose heat and lose heart.

  71. There will be a lot of talk, a lot of running around, a lot of activity, but no real lasting fruit.

  72. We can launch our ship from the harbor with excitement, with enthusiasm.

  73. But if the compass is off just a few degrees, we'll find ourselves eventually lost at sea.

  74. Discouraged.

  75. Frustrated.

  76. Thirsty.

  77. But if we come again to the Bible and listen to what God is telling us about our identity to God.

  78. So, what do we learn then?

  79. What do we learn about our mission as a church, this mission of the King, from this passage?

  80. Well, I want to point out four things this morning that we learn about our mission from this passage.

  81. The first thing we see is what we might call the nature of our mission.

  82. What is the nature of our mission?

  83. Well, Jesus says in verse 8, you'll be my witnesses, right?

  84. Now, words like witness or testimony, they can often have sort of a religious ring to them these days, right?

  85. We often talk about someone giving their testimony in a church service.

  86. But instead, picture yourself when you hear this word in a courtroom.

  87. Someone's on trial.

  88. Someone's on trial.

  89. And you're called to the stand because you've seen, heard, or experienced something that's relevant to the case.

  90. In other words, you're a witness and you're being asked to give your testimony.

  91. These words have that same kind of courtroom connotation here in Acts.

  92. The apostles have seen and heard and experienced something.

  93. And Jesus is telling them that now they're going to share it, to state it, to testify to it.

  94. And that's the first reason why, if we think about it, the first reason why the nature of the church's mission is witness.

  95. The first reason why is because Christianity is, first and foremost, about what Jesus Christ has done in history.

  96. What he's done objectively, such that people could see him with their eyes and hear him with their ears and even touch him with their hands.

  97. It wasn't just a subjective kind of religious experience that they had.

  98. Luke kind of goes out of his way, doesn't he, to make this clear in our passage.

  99. In verse 3 he says,

  100. There is, friends, a kind of facticity to the Christian message of Jesus.

  101. And that's why the nature of our mission is one of witness.

  102. Because at its root, it's built upon something that men and women had seen and heard and touched and experienced.

  103. And what that means is that Christianity offers itself for genuine investigation.

  104. Christianity doesn't ask you to sort of suspend your reason when considering Christ.

  105. In fact, just the opposite.

  106. It invites you to come to the Gospels with all your mental faculty sharpened and to ask the tough questions.

  107. Friend, don't think that Christianity is threatened by questions.

  108. In fact, it welcomes them.

  109. So if we are being true to the nature of our mission, to testify, to witness, to the Christ who acted in history,

  110. then our church should be a place where more and more people are asking some genuine questions and seeking honest answers.

  111. But, you know, there's a second reason why the nature of our mission is witness.

  112. It's witness.

  113. It's this.

  114. The reason why the nature of our mission is witness is because Christianity is not primarily something that we do,

  115. but something Christ has done for us.

  116. Therefore, witness testifying to something outside of us has to be the essential nature of this mission.

  117. Think about it.

  118. If Christianity were basically a list, right, of rules that we had to keep,

  119. then Christ would have said to the apostles,

  120. okay, you're going to be my police officers to keep people in line, right?

  121. Or I'm sending you out as judges to evaluate how people are doing.

  122. But instead, Jesus says, you're going to be my witnesses

  123. because I, Jesus, have accomplished all that's necessary to reconcile sinners to God.

  124. So we testify to what Jesus has done at its core.

  125. And what does that mean?

  126. If we're witnessing to something that Christ has done,

  127. not something that we have to perform or upkeep.

  128. Well, friends, it means that our mission needs to be marked.

  129. It must be marked.

  130. It will be marked by genuine humility.

  131. Now, not the kind of humility that's sort of never certain whether anything is true or not, right?

  132. That's not the kind of humility we're talking about.

  133. Rather, we're talking about the kind of humility that realizes

  134. our own ability and ambitions are not what matter at the end of the day.

  135. This is the kind of humility that realizes we have nothing in ourselves to boast about.

  136. This is the kind of humility that sort of forgets itself

  137. and focuses on the greatness of Christ.

  138. So, this is the first thing we see,

  139. that the nature of our mission as a church is witness.

  140. It's testifying to Christ.

  141. Second, let's consider the scope of this mission that we have,

  142. the scope of our mission.

  143. In verse 8, Jesus says to the apostles,

  144. you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem,

  145. in all Judea and Samaria,

  146. and to the ends of the earth.

  147. In short, what we see here is that the scope

  148. of the mission of Jesus for His church is worldwide.

  149. Now, consider just a moment what this verse is telling us about God.

  150. In short, it's telling us that God is faithful to His promises, actually,

  151. if you were to hear this sort of commission of Jesus

  152. in light of the Old Testament, right?

  153. God is faithful to His promises.

  154. You know, one way to think about Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria here

  155. is that that was the kind of old geographic extent of ancient Israel.

  156. Throughout the Old Testament, God said that He would bring His salvation

  157. to His people, to His Old Testament people, to Israel.

  158. And now Jesus is saying to the apostles,

  159. you're going to be the witness bearers of salvation

  160. to the Jewish people.

  161. You're going to be my witnesses to them.

  162. But, you see, it goes further than that.

  163. Just like the Old Testament pushed further than that.

  164. Because God's salvation wasn't just for ethnic Israel.

  165. It was a salvation that God had planned

  166. through Israel for everyone

  167. to the ends of the earth.

  168. Even sometimes when it made us a little uncomfortable,

  169. made the apostles a little uncomfortable.

  170. In the first century, you'll remember that Samaria

  171. was sort of that region sort of north of Jerusalem and Judea.

  172. It was a place where people who were kind of multi-ethnic lived.

  173. They were half Jewish, half Gentile.

  174. Their religious beliefs were sort of an amalgam

  175. of some Old Testament beliefs,

  176. but some beliefs imported in from other cultures.

  177. And because of that,

  178. Samaritans were despised by many Jews of Jesus' day.

  179. But the gospel was for them too.

  180. And then it pushes even further out.

  181. The ends of the earth, Jesus says.

  182. Right?

  183. To the ends of the earth,

  184. which is inclusive of all ethnicities,

  185. and all cultures,

  186. and all language groups.

  187. And again, in the Old Testament,

  188. God had promised that through the Messiah,

  189. He would bring His salvation to all people,

  190. to the ends of the earth.

  191. That the Messiah, when He came,

  192. wouldn't just be Israel's King,

  193. but He would be the world's true Lord.

  194. That He would bring God's kingdom,

  195. that is God's saving rule,

  196. God's world-healing reign,

  197. and then across the globe,

  198. to the ends of the earth,

  199. even all the way to the ends of the earth,

  200. right here in New Haven.

  201. Have you considered, friends,

  202. from the perspective of Jerusalem,

  203. we are like in the far-flung reaches

  204. of nowheresville,

  205. right here in New Haven, right?

  206. And yet, lo and behold,

  207. God's faithful to His promise.

  208. Here we are,

  209. hearing the message of His salvation.

  210. Now, incidentally,

  211. this verse here that we're looking at,

  212. it kind of provides a rough outline

  213. of the book of Acts,

  214. if you think about it.

  215. In the book of Acts,

  216. what we're going to see

  217. is that chapters 1 through 7

  218. deal with the apostles' witness

  219. in Jerusalem.

  220. And then in 8 through 12,

  221. we consider Judea and Samaria.

  222. And then in chapters 13 through 28,

  223. we see the gospel beginning

  224. to go to the ends of the earth.

  225. Or at least it makes it

  226. all the way to Rome,

  227. which was the center

  228. of the empire at the time.

  229. Now, this scope of the mission

  230. that we see here,

  231. what does it tell us?

  232. It tells us about the universality

  233. of the gospel, right?

  234. The Christian message is good news

  235. for everyone.

  236. No matter what country

  237. or culture you're from,

  238. the message about Jesus

  239. is the message that

  240. you desperately need

  241. and that God graciously offers.

  242. Now, of course,

  243. that's the thing

  244. that kind of trips many of us up

  245. when they consider Christianity, right?

  246. How could you say

  247. that Christianity is the truth

  248. for everybody?

  249. Sounds a little exclusive

  250. or intolerant, right?

  251. There can't just be one answer

  252. for everyone, right?

  253. We think that.

  254. And yet, friends, what if?

  255. What if as humans,

  256. there were one problem

  257. that we all shared?

  258. One problem that we all experienced

  259. and acknowledged

  260. and spent our whole lives

  261. living under,

  262. many of us spend our whole lives

  263. ignoring, right?

  264. What if there was one problem

  265. we all experienced

  266. and what if there were

  267. one person

  268. who actually overcame

  269. that problem?

  270. What if there was someone

  271. who actually defeated

  272. that problem for good?

  273. wouldn't you want to share

  274. the news about that person

  275. with everyone?

  276. Wouldn't you want to commend

  277. that person to everyone you know?

  278. I mean, think about it.

  279. You listen to a podcast,

  280. it gives you some, like,

  281. hot takes on how to improve

  282. your sleep,

  283. and you're like,

  284. you've got to hear this, right?

  285. But, friends,

  286. there is someone who has come

  287. who has solved

  288. the problem of human existence.

  289. Because, listen,

  290. each of us

  291. is going to die one day.

  292. It is the universal problem,

  293. and there's only one person

  294. who's ever overcome death,

  295. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  296. He rose from the dead

  297. never to die again.

  298. Why?

  299. Because in His death

  300. and resurrection,

  301. He defeated

  302. the cause of death,

  303. which is sin,

  304. the very thing

  305. that separates us from God,

  306. the life giver

  307. of all things,

  308. and separated from God

  309. through our own waywardness

  310. and idolatry,

  311. we die.

  312. And yet, Jesus has overcome that

  313. and risen from the dead.

  314. He has conquered death.

  315. No other great world leader

  316. or religious figure

  317. can make such a claim.

  318. Right?

  319. If Christ has risen,

  320. then surely all people

  321. should know about Him,

  322. should they not?

  323. Both here in our Jerusalem

  324. and Judea and Samaria,

  325. as we might say,

  326. and to the ends of the earth.

  327. The scope of this mission

  328. shows us not just

  329. God's lordship

  330. over all cultures

  331. and people groups,

  332. but the scope of this mission

  333. tells us about God's love

  334. for all cultures

  335. and all people groups.

  336. All the earth is His.

  337. God doesn't play favorites.

  338. His grace extends to everyone

  339. who will receive it,

  340. no matter what their background

  341. or language or ethnicity.

  342. All are welcome to come to Christ

  343. and receive the newness of life

  344. that He offers.

  345. Now let me say just a quick word

  346. of application

  347. before moving on to the third point.

  348. First,

  349. Trinity,

  350. our church,

  351. we want to be a church

  352. that continues

  353. to invest

  354. in the global mission

  355. of the church.

  356. The work of God

  357. in the world

  358. is so much bigger

  359. than what's happening

  360. here in New Haven.

  361. So friends,

  362. take some time

  363. to learn about

  364. the missionaries

  365. that we support.

  366. Pray for them

  367. in your quiet time

  368. in your small group.

  369. But second,

  370. we need to continually

  371. remind ourselves

  372. of how strategically

  373. we are placed

  374. as a church

  375. to impact

  376. the worldwide mission

  377. of the church.

  378. People come to New Haven

  379. from all around the world.

  380. Some people come to New Haven

  381. even from countries

  382. where Christianity

  383. is illegal,

  384. where Christians

  385. are persecuted,

  386. and where most people

  387. have little or no exposure

  388. to Christ,

  389. and God providentially

  390. brings them here

  391. right into our backyard,

  392. as it were,

  393. right into our apartment complexes

  394. and our residence halls.

  395. And all this means,

  396. what it means

  397. is that you and I

  398. here

  399. can reach the ends

  400. of the earth

  401. with the gospel

  402. without having to walk

  403. to the end of our street.

  404. Right?

  405. Let me be somewhat direct.

  406. Do not think

  407. that God brought you

  408. to New Haven

  409. simply so you can

  410. get an education,

  411. or work for a few years,

  412. and then move on.

  413. God brought you

  414. to New Haven

  415. to be a part

  416. of His kingdom work.

  417. So whether you're

  418. going to be here

  419. for four months

  420. and move on,

  421. or four years

  422. and move on,

  423. or whether you're

  424. going to be here

  425. for the rest of your life,

  426. join a church,

  427. get in on the action,

  428. and don't miss out.

  429. The scope of this mission

  430. is worldwide,

  431. and the world's right here,

  432. right at our doorstep,

  433. ready to hear the good news.

  434. So that's the scope

  435. of the mission.

  436. Third, we see in this passage

  437. not just the nature

  438. and the scope of the mission,

  439. we see the power,

  440. the power of mission.

  441. Now at this point

  442. you might be thinking,

  443. how in the world

  444. can I,

  445. can we,

  446. possibly do this?

  447. Right?

  448. The first obvious problem,

  449. given the nature

  450. of our mission as witnesses,

  451. is that we aren't

  452. eyewitnesses of Christ,

  453. right?

  454. The apostles,

  455. whom Jesus chose,

  456. are fundamentally different

  457. than anyone else

  458. who came after them

  459. because they were

  460. literal eyewitnesses

  461. of Jesus Christ,

  462. of His ministry,

  463. of His death,

  464. of His resurrection,

  465. and of His ascension.

  466. We aren't witnesses

  467. in the same way

  468. the apostles were witnesses.

  469. In what sense then

  470. can we be witnesses at all?

  471. Right?

  472. And second,

  473. given the immensity

  474. of the scope

  475. of the mission

  476. to the ends of the earth,

  477. how can we possibly

  478. even make a dent in that?

  479. It seems overwhelming.

  480. Well friends,

  481. the answer,

  482. actually,

  483. to both of those problems

  484. is found in verses 4 and 5

  485. and in the first half

  486. of verse 8.

  487. In a few days,

  488. Jesus told His disciples,

  489. you will be baptized

  490. in the Holy Spirit.

  491. And in verse 8,

  492. He says,

  493. you'll receive power

  494. when the Holy Spirit

  495. comes upon you.

  496. The Holy Spirit,

  497. God Himself,

  498. the third person

  499. of the Trinity,

  500. the Lord,

  501. the giver of life,

  502. as the Creed says,

  503. the Holy Spirit

  504. is the power

  505. of our mission.

  506. Now, we're not going

  507. to go into all

  508. of the detail we could

  509. concerning the Holy Spirit

  510. this morning

  511. because His ministry

  512. is going to unfold

  513. as we walk through Acts

  514. this year.

  515. And if you want

  516. to go even deeper,

  517. you can come to the

  518. adult ed class

  519. starting next week

  520. at 9 o'clock.

  521. We're going to explore

  522. the person and work

  523. of the Holy Spirit

  524. in more depth.

  525. But for now,

  526. here's the relevant point

  527. that Jesus is pulling out

  528. in the context of mission.

  529. Jesus is promising

  530. that the Holy Spirit

  531. will come upon

  532. His disciples

  533. in abundance

  534. and they will be

  535. empowered by the Spirit

  536. to carry out

  537. this mission.

  538. Think about that word

  539. baptize, right?

  540. Baptize means

  541. to immerse something,

  542. to plunge something

  543. underwater.

  544. And Jesus promises them

  545. that in a few days

  546. they're going to be

  547. plunged into the Spirit's

  548. presence and power.

  549. Just like the prophets,

  550. like Joel and Isaiah

  551. and Ezekiel had promised,

  552. just like John the Baptist

  553. had promised,

  554. the Holy Spirit

  555. was going to flood

  556. their lives,

  557. as it were.

  558. Now, of course,

  559. again,

  560. these earliest disciples,

  561. especially the apostles,

  562. they occupied

  563. a unique place, right,

  564. in the history of redemption.

  565. They had a unique place.

  566. I mean,

  567. one of the ways

  568. in which they were unique,

  569. right,

  570. is that they were followers

  571. of Jesus

  572. before Jesus had completed

  573. His redemptive work

  574. and before He inaugurated

  575. the New Covenant.

  576. So they sort of received

  577. the Holy Spirit

  578. in New Covenant fullness

  579. after they had already

  580. become disciples of Jesus,

  581. as it were,

  582. right?

  583. But today,

  584. we are in the position

  585. living on this side

  586. of Pentecost

  587. that we are baptized

  588. with the Spirit,

  589. we are flooded

  590. with His presence

  591. upon our conversion

  592. to Christ,

  593. upon receiving Him.

  594. Now,

  595. we can experience

  596. fillings with the Spirit,

  597. no doubt,

  598. right?

  599. These fillings can range

  600. in depth and duration,

  601. but friend,

  602. every genuine

  603. New Testament Christian

  604. has been baptized,

  605. so to say,

  606. with the Holy Spirit.

  607. Now,

  608. what does that mean?

  609. Well,

  610. it means a lot.

  611. It means that God

  612. Himself,

  613. in the person

  614. of the Holy Spirit,

  615. is present

  616. to believers today

  617. in a real,

  618. personal,

  619. and powerful way

  620. through the Holy Spirit.

  621. we may not be

  622. eyewitnesses

  623. of Jesus' resurrection

  624. like the apostles were,

  625. but we have

  626. their eyewitness testimony

  627. preserved for us

  628. in the New Testament,

  629. and that Spirit-inspired

  630. written witness

  631. still speaks today.

  632. And moreover,

  633. we have the same Spirit

  634. dwelling in us

  635. as in them,

  636. so today,

  637. we may not be able

  638. to physically experience

  639. the risen Jesus,

  640. but we can still

  641. no less experience

  642. His spiritually

  643. transformative power

  644. through the operation

  645. of the Holy Spirit.

  646. We can hold forth

  647. the apostolic testimony

  648. and witness

  649. to our own experience

  650. of the risen Lord Jesus

  651. at work in our lives

  652. through His Spirit.

  653. But what are the power

  654. Jesus promises?

  655. It is true

  656. that on our own,

  657. we are too weak

  658. to carry out

  659. our mission,

  660. but God has given us

  661. exactly what we need.

  662. Zechariah 4, 6 says,

  663. not by might,

  664. not by power,

  665. but by my Spirit,

  666. says the Lord of hosts,

  667. right?

  668. So the question is,

  669. and the question

  670. we have to ask ourselves is,

  671. what power are we relying on

  672. to fulfill our mission?

  673. At the end of the day,

  674. are we relying

  675. on our clever intellect?

  676. Do we think we can argue

  677. or reason people

  678. into the kingdom of God?

  679. Are we depending

  680. on our kind disposition?

  681. Do we think that

  682. if we're super nice to people,

  683. we'll win them to Christ?

  684. Are we relying

  685. on massive programs

  686. or flashy technology

  687. to produce

  688. spiritual transformation?

  689. Friends, listen,

  690. all that stuff

  691. has its place.

  692. God wants you

  693. to use your mind.

  694. God wants you

  695. to use your love.

  696. God wants you

  697. to use the tools

  698. at your disposal

  699. to witness Him,

  700. but the truth is,

  701. none of that

  702. is going to do

  703. a hill of beans

  704. without the Holy Spirit.

  705. Without the Holy Spirit

  706. shining the light

  707. of the glory of Jesus

  708. into our hearts.

  709. Without that ministry,

  710. the Holy Spirit,

  711. we can argue

  712. and we can love

  713. and we can program

  714. all we want

  715. and it won't make

  716. a difference.

  717. But here's the good news.

  718. Just as Jesus promised,

  719. the Spirit's power

  720. is at work in us.

  721. We can rely on Him

  722. in our speaking,

  723. in our loving,

  724. in our planning

  725. to do the real work

  726. of changing hearts

  727. through those means.

  728. And what does that power

  729. look like?

  730. You know,

  731. when we think about

  732. the power of the Holy Spirit

  733. today,

  734. we immediately tend

  735. to think of the so-called

  736. sort of miraculous gifts,

  737. things like healing

  738. or speaking in tongues

  739. and prophecy.

  740. And we're going to talk

  741. about those as we go

  742. in the book of Acts.

  743. But can I share with you

  744. one of, I think,

  745. one of the key passages

  746. about the Holy Spirit's power

  747. in the New Testament?

  748. It's from Ephesians chapter 3,

    Ephesians 3:14–19

  749. verses 14 through 19.

  750. And it says this.

  751. It's actually a prayer

  752. of the Apostle Paul.

  753. Paul says,

  754. Oh, why?

  755. For what?

  756. So that Christ

  757. may dwell in your hearts

  758. through faith,

  759. that you being rooted

  760. and grounded in love

  761. may have strength

  762. to comprehend

  763. with all the saints.

  764. Notice the power language?

  765. Strength to comprehend what?

  766. What is the breadth

  767. and length

  768. and height

  769. and depth

  770. and to know

  771. the love of Christ

  772. that surpasses knowledge

  773. that you may be filled

  774. with all the fullness

  775. of God.

  776. When the power

  777. of the Holy Spirit

  778. is at work in our lives,

  779. how do we know?

  780. It's when Christ

  781. dwells in our hearts.

  782. It's when the love

  783. of Christ

  784. shines forth

  785. in all of its

  786. multi-dimensionality,

  787. its height,

  788. its depth,

  789. its length,

  790. its breadth,

  791. when we're filled

  792. with all that fullness

  793. of God's grace

  794. and love for us.

  795. That's the Holy Spirit's

  796. power at its core.

  797. When instead of our hearts

  798. being caught up

  799. with false gods,

  800. right?

  801. When instead of that,

  802. Christ dwells there.

  803. When instead of seeing

  804. the love of Christ

  805. as a small thing,

  806. we gape and we gasp

  807. and our intellect

  808. reaches its limit

  809. because of the immensity

  810. of Christ's love for us.

  811. We know something

  812. that surpasses knowledge.

  813. In short,

  814. the Spirit

  815. is powerfully at work,

  816. not just when there are

  817. signs and wonders,

  818. but when our hearts

  819. are filled with the assurance

  820. of the love of Jesus

  821. in the gospel.

  822. When we know

  823. that Jesus has forgiven

  824. our sins

  825. and reconciled us to God,

  826. when the reality of that

  827. washes over us,

  828. then we will speak

  829. and we will serve

  830. with extraordinary boldness,

  831. just like the early church.

  832. Friends,

  833. that is the power

  834. of our mission.

  835. The power of our mission

  836. is the Holy Spirit.

  837. All right,

  838. fourth,

  839. finally,

  840. last point.

  841. What is the end?

  842. What's the end

  843. of our mission?

  844. Well,

  845. the end of our passage,

  846. well,

  847. the end of the passage

  848. about the ascension

  849. shows us

  850. that there is

  851. a hope

  852. to our mission.

  853. We're going somewhere.

  854. We're headed

  855. in a direction.

  856. There's actually

  857. an end,

  858. a goal

  859. of our journey.

  860. And that end,

  861. that goal,

  862. is what?

  863. It is the

  864. kingdom-restoring,

  865. world-renewing

  866. return of Jesus Christ.

  867. This same Jesus

  868. who has been taken

  869. from you into heaven

  870. will come back

  871. in the same way

  872. you have seen Him

  873. go into heaven.

  874. Now,

  875. of course,

  876. we don't know

  877. when Christ will return

  878. to restore all things,

  879. and there's no use

  880. speculating about the end,

  881. right?

  882. Jesus tells us

  883. the Father has set

  884. the time by His own

  885. authority,

  886. and it's not for us

  887. to know.

  888. It's funny how often

  889. in the history of the church

  890. we've sort of ignored

  891. that very clear

  892. command of Jesus,

  893. right?

  894. But we know

  895. that Christ

  896. will return,

  897. and when He does,

  898. He will restore

  899. and renew

  900. all things.

  901. Brothers and sisters,

  902. here's how our story ends.

  903. Here's how the story

  904. of Trinity Baptist Church

  905. ends.

  906. Here's how the story

  907. of your life ends

  908. if you're a believer

  909. in Jesus.

  910. God wins.

  911. The church prevails.

  912. And of course,

  913. it doesn't look

  914. often

  915. like that's going

  916. to be the case.

  917. The world's full,

  918. right,

  919. of injustice

  920. and unbelief.

  921. The church faces

  922. persecution from without,

  923. dissension from within.

  924. At times,

  925. we are tempted,

  926. just like the apostles

  927. who witnessed

  928. Jesus' ascension,

  929. to just kind of

  930. stand here

  931. gazing into the sky.

  932. Do you wonder

  933. what must have been

  934. going through their minds

  935. that day

  936. when Jesus ascended

  937. to the Father's presence?

  938. Certainly one part

  939. amazement,

  940. to be sure.

  941. Wonder?

  942. Awe?

  943. But I wonder

  944. if it was another part

  945. confusion.

  946. In fear

  947. and maybe doubt.

  948. Because what the ascension

  949. meant was that Christ

  950. was returning

  951. to the Father

  952. definitively.

  953. That the 40 days

  954. of His appearing

  955. to them,

  956. teaching them,

  957. being with them

  958. after the resurrection

  959. was coming to a close,

  960. coming to its conclusion,

  961. its consummation

  962. as He was going

  963. to be enthroned

  964. in heaven.

  965. He was no longer

  966. going to be present

  967. with them physically

  968. and that probably

  969. scared them a little bit.

  970. How on earth

  971. were they going

  972. to make it

  973. without Him?

  974. So they gaze

  975. longingly

  976. into the sky,

  977. partially afraid

  978. that with Jesus

  979. gone to heaven

  980. they would be

  981. abandoned and alone.

  982. But the angels

  983. remind them

  984. that the end

  985. is secure.

  986. After all,

  987. Jesus is not

  988. abandoning them.

  989. Did you notice

  990. in the first verse

  991. of this passage

  992. that we read,

  993. the first verse

  994. of Acts,

  995. Luke sort of starts

  996. this book

  997. which is the second part,

  998. right,

  999. of a two-part work

  1000. that Luke wrote.

  1001. The first one

1002. we call the Gospel of Luke

  1003. or better,

1004. the Gospel according to Luke

  1005. and then he wrote

  1006. the book of Acts.

  1007. And Luke says,

  1008. kind of picking up

  1009. his second volume,

1010. he sort of looks back

  1011. at his first volume,

  1012. the Gospel of Luke

  1013. and says,

  1014. well, my first volume

  1015. I wrote about all

  1016. that Jesus began

  1017. to do and teach.

  1018. And what's the implication?

  1019. That this second volume

1020. is going to be about

  1021. all that Jesus

  1022. continued to do

  1023. and teach.

  1024. You see,

  1025. the ascension of Jesus

1026. to the Father's right hand

1027. means that He is enthroned

  1028. as the King

  1029. of the whole creation.

1030. And the ascended King Jesus

  1031. has poured out

1032. His Spirit on the church

  1033. so that His work

  1034. might continue

  1035. through them.

  1036. And moreover,

  1037. Jesus Himself,

  1038. this same Jesus,

  1039. will return

  1040. to bring all things

  1041. to their conclusion.

  1042. So no matter

  1043. what the present holds,

1044. we know how the story ends.

  1045. There's no need

  1046. to sort of wistfully

  1047. gaze at the sky

1048. longing for the good old days,

  1049. right?

  1050. Or despairing

  1051. at our perceived weakness

  1052. and in abilities.

  1053. Friends,

1054. Christ is on the throne

1055. at the Father's right hand

  1056. when it says,

1057. a cloud took Him up.

  1058. What are clouds

  1059. in Scripture, right?

  1060. He wasn't talking

  1061. about a collection

1062. of moisture in the sky,

  1063. right?

  1064. Clouds in Scripture

  1065. are manifestations

  1066. of the presence

  1067. of God's glory.

  1068. Like the cloud

  1069. that followed the people

  1070. through the wilderness,

  1071. like the cloud

  1072. that came down

  1073. in the temple,

  1074. like the cloud

  1075. that was there

  1076. when Jesus was transfigured

  1077. on the mountain.

  1078. Jesus,

  1079. when He ascends

  1080. visibly before His apostles,

  1081. is taken up

1082. into the glory of God

  1083. to take His place

1084. as the King of all.

1085. Christ is on the throne

1086. at the Father's right hand.

  1087. His Spirit has been

  1088. poured out on us.

1089. And He's going to return

  1090. in glory to draw

  1091. all things together

  1092. when He returns.

  1093. Sure, along the way,

  1094. we will face setbacks

  1095. and discouragements

  1096. and disappointments.

  1097. There will be times

  1098. when it seems like

  1099. the mission feels

  1100. a little futile,

  1101. but remember,

1102. the end of the mission

1103. is not dependent on us.

  1104. Just as God's grace

  1105. sets our mission

1106. in motion at the beginning

  1107. and keeps it burning

1108. with the light of the Spirit,

  1109. so God's grace

1110. will bring it to completion

  1111. when Christ returns.

  1112. So friends,

  1113. with that hope

  1114. before our eyes

  1115. and God's Spirit

  1116. in our hearts,

  1117. don't you see

1118. this mission that we're on?

  1119. It cannot fail.

  1120. Let's pray.

  1121. Father, we ask

  1122. that by Your Spirit

  1123. that You would renew

  1124. our minds

  1125. and our hearts

  1126. with Your grace

1127. so that we might receive

  1128. fresh boldness

  1129. and wisdom

  1130. to faithfully witness

  1131. to Jesus,

  1132. our resurrected

  1133. and ascended King.

  1134. Jesus, we praise You.

1135. Thank You for Your ministry.

  1136. It certainly didn't stop

  1137. when You ascended

  1138. to Your rightful throne.

  1139. But Lord,

  1140. thank You

  1141. that You continue

  1142. Your work

  1143. extending Your reign

  1144. of grace and peace

  1145. through the outpouring

  1146. of Your Spirit,

  1147. through the proclamation

  1148. of Your saving work

  1149. in the Gospel.

  1150. Father,

1151. we pray that as we study

  1152. Acts this year

  1153. that You would shape

  1154. our minds

  1155. and our hearts,

  1156. that You would capture

  1157. our wills

  1158. and fire our imaginations

  1159. to live

  1160. as Your people,

1161. people of the risen King,

  1162. witnesses to Your kingdom

  1163. and grace.

1164. Pray this in Your mighty name,
