  3. Thanks for joining us. Circumstances.

  4. And you're going to find that to be true in your life as well, if

  5. you live long enough. It's not the easy seasons of

  6. your life that you come out with the most experience and the most

  7. knowledge. It's the difficult seasons of

  8. your life. And in one particular difficult

  9. season of my life, when I was very young, about 23 years old,

  10. I had a dear friend of mine, actually the guy who preached

  11. here last Sunday. And I think about this all the

  12. time because he's 10 years old. John is 10 years older than me.

  13. John Crosby preached for me last week.

  14. He and I were, I was walking through a very difficult season

  15. at 23. He was 33.

  16. And I look back on that and think, I thought he was so old

  17. and wise and he was a stupid kid.

  18. All right. And this is what's so

  19. interesting about that is he said something to me when I was

  20. walking through that difficult season that has stuck on me the

  21. rest of my life. I'm going to share this with

  22. you, he said, Stephen, it's not your circumstances that

  23. determine who you become. It's how you respond to those

  24. circumstances that will determine who you've become.

  25. So that and that truth has been something I've used over and

  26. over and over again in my life when I've come up against

  27. difficult circumstances and you will come up against difficult

  28. circumstances, difficult seasons of life where you will have to

  29. pause and say, what are these circumstances going to do to me

  30. right now? Are they going to make me

  31. better? Are they going to make me angry?

  32. Are they going to make me run away or are they going to make

  33. me better? Are they going to make me a

  34. different type of person? A person who trusts God, a

  35. person who leans in, a person who relies on God to help him or

  36. her. So it's not your circumstances

  37. that determine who you become. It's how you respond to those

  38. circumstances that determine who you become.

  39. Now, Christmas, the season of Christmas, which it's great and

  40. we love it, but here's something about Christmas that we all need

  41. to be honest about. Christmas has a way of

  42. intensifying circumstances that you are living in.

  43. Christmas has a way of intensifying circumstances that

  44. you are living in. So let me explain what I mean.

  45. If life is going well for you right now, Christmas amplifies

  46. that joy, right? If things are going well for

  47. you, then Christmas kind of goes, man.

  48. Look, it's been going great for a few months and look at

  49. Christmas now. It makes it even better because

  50. like, you have Christmas to amplify how good life's been

  51. going. But if life is hard for you

  52. right now, if things are not going good for you, Christmas

  53. has a way of amplifying that pain for you as well.

  54. Christmas has a way of saying you see how terrible your life

  55. is. Everyone around you is so happy

  56. and you are so miserable. At Christmas time.

  57. Our unfavorable circumstances seem to be highlighted or

  58. presented to us in high definition.

  59. They seem to be they seem to be enunciated.

  60. I remember around 5 after five years of marriage, Mary and I

  61. Mary and I've been married about five years.

  62. And we decided, hey, let's, let's have kids.

  63. And you know, golly, this seems like a whole lifetime ago.

  64. But she wasn't even sure she wanted children.

  65. Sorry, guys, I know that's hard news to hear.

  66. I always, always wanted children.

  67. She wasn't so sure. We're still debating on who was

  68. right on this, but anyway, but we just say, hey, let's have

  69. kids. We're at Year 5.

  70. We've been married, we're 26. And so we start, you know, we're

  71. going to have kids. And then it doesn't come easy

  72. for us. We have multiple miscarriages.

  73. We walk through some really dark pain of not being able to

  74. conceive and then conceiving and having miscarriage.

  75. And it's just, it was really tough, man.

  76. It was really, I don't want to turn the whole sermon into that

  77. testimony, but it was a really tough season for our lives and

  78. God use them for good. And she'll be the first to tell

  79. you that honestly, that's what made us the marriage we are

  80. today was walking through those years of infertility was we

  81. learned how to trust each other and rely on each other and

  82. really believe that we had each other's back.

  83. And I remember at Christmas time, during those years of

  84. infertility, Christmas time would accentuate that pain so

  85. much more because I have, I have four siblings.

  86. I'm one of five and my oldest sister, she's 10 years.

  87. One of my older sisters had a child when she was in her early

  88. 20s and and then another child, she's 10 years older than me.

  89. And so then those grandbabies are there at these Christmas

  90. parties. And my brother had a couple kids

  91. and those grandbabies are there. And so we'd go to these family

  92. Christmas parties and all these little children be running

  93. around. And I should have children by

  94. now, but I didn't. And so I would bring gifts for

  95. the nephews and nieces and it would be so exciting.

  96. And I would always wonder in my head are will my brothers and

  97. sisters ever have nephews and nieces that are my children to

  98. bring gifts to at Christmas time?

  99. And Christmas would have a way of accentuating the pain of our

  100. infertility year after year after year.

  101. But here's the thing about Christmas.

  102. If life will, if life will not change, if your circumstances

  103. are determined to not change, then your faith has to grow.

  104. You have to respond to that pain of circumstance with a growing

  105. faith. That's really the only option,

  106. because here's the other option. The only other option is to be

  107. angry, to be bitter, to be sad, to look at your circumstances

  108. that refuse to change and say I am angry because of this and I

  109. will make everybody around me miserable because I'm angry

  110. because of this. Have you ever been that person?

  111. Have you ever been the victim of that person?

  112. See, that's one option. You can look at your

  113. circumstances that refuse to change and you can say I will be

  114. bitter and I will be angry about this.

  115. Or you can look at your circumstances that refuse to

  116. change and you can say the answer to this is faith.

  117. So I look back on my season of difficulty of Mary and I walking

  118. through infertility and how Christmas would accentuate that

  119. pain. And I would pray and I would

  120. talk to God. And sometimes those prayers were

  121. anger filled and sometimes those prayers were yelling and

  122. sometimes those prayers were weeping, but they were always to

  123. God. In other words, I was always

  124. leaning into my faith through the pain of that season.

  125. And that's really the only option you have when

  126. circumstances refuse to change. You and I must have our faith

  127. grow. And this truth sits at the very

  128. heart of Christmas. Think about the message spoken

  129. by the angels to some shepherds. Maybe you know the story.

  130. Maybe you haven't read it in the Bible, but you saw Charlie

  131. Brown's Christmas, right? And an Angel appeared to the

  132. shepherds, right? And they were afraid.

  133. And what did the Angel say to the shepherds?

  134. The Angel said to the shepherds, do not be afraid, for behold, I

  135. bring you good news of great joy, which will be for all the

  136. people. Those two words fear not, or do

  137. not be afraid. And then the other word, behold.

  138. Behold, these are the key to our faith growing, rejecting, fear

  139. and beholding, fearing not and beholding.

  140. These are the key to your faith growing.

  141. This is the key to your faith growing.

  142. You must reject fear and you must behold.

  143. So this morning as we start this new teaching series called The

  144. Wonder of Christmas, today we're going to talk about something

  145. that many of us have lost or we struggle to hold on to or we

  146. hold on to it with loose fingers.

  147. And that is this, the wonder of faith, the wonder of faith.

  148. And this is the type of faith that comes from beholding the

  149. gospel freshly again. And Christmas time should force

  150. us and push us to behold the gospel freshly again.

  151. So to start our conversation around the wonder of faith,

  152. let's read the passage that many of you will recognize, Luke

    Luke 2:8–11

  153. chapter 2, verses 8 through 11. It's famous, it's great, and we

  154. ought to read it every Christmas.

  155. And then Christmas morning you ought to force your kids to make

  156. force your kids or your grandkids, you read it to them

  157. before they get over one single gift, all right?

  158. They will remember this passage of Scripture the rest of their

  159. life if you do that right. Luke chapter 2, verses 8 through

    Luke 2:8–11

  160. 11. This is what it says, it says.

  161. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby,

  162. keeping watch over their flocks at night.

  163. An Angel of the Lord appeared to them.

  164. Do you guys ever think, oh, it's angels, right, right.

  165. It's like, but at first it's just an Angel of the Lord

  166. appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them.

  167. And they were, everybody say terrified, terrified.

  168. But the Angel said to them, do not be afraid.

  169. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the

  170. people today in the town of David.

  171. A Savior has been born to you. He is the Messiah of the Lord,

  172. you and I, We all need our faith to grow.

  173. And here's the big idea. So if you're a note taker, I'm

  174. going to give you the big idea up front, the thesis of this

  175. whole talk so you can know this up top at the top, you ready?

  176. Faith grows when we behold the gospel more than we behold our

  177. fear. All right, let me say that

  178. again. Faith grows when we behold the

  179. gospel more than we behold our fear.

  180. All right, so you have two options.

  181. You can behold your fear, or you can behold the gospel.

  182. Your faith will grow the more you behold the gospel as opposed

  183. to beholding your fear. And here's the two we're going

  184. to, we're going to unpack 2 ideas from this text.

  185. Ready #1 Permitting your fear to rule is the problem.

  186. Permitting your fear to rule is the problem.

  187. And #2 permitting the gospel, perceiving the gospel, I'm

  188. sorry, is the solution. So #1 permitting your fear to

  189. rule is the problem. And #2 perceiving the gospel is

  190. the solution. So first of all, let's just jump

  191. into this. Permitting your fear to rule is

  192. the problem. Now I know when we read the

  193. story of the shepherds, we see them getting terrified.

  194. We think to ourselves, well, of course, Steven, they got

  195. terrified. If an Angel showed up to you and

  196. you were out in the field doing something and an Angel just kind

  197. of like came out of nowhere and there was light all around you.

  198. I mean, what does that even, like, look like?

  199. Wouldn't you be terrified? That's true.

  200. But I think when you read it that, you know, on the surface

  201. and you think, well, of course they were terrified.

  202. It was an Angel. I think you're missing something

  203. more important in the text, and I think you're missing why Luke

  204. shares with us that the shepherds were terrified.

  205. If you think about the Bible, humans are always afraid of the

  206. holy or the representative of the holy.

  207. Every time an Angel shows up in the world, what happens?

  208. The Angel shows up in front of a person.

  209. What does the text say? The Angel says what do not what?

  210. Be afraid. Why does the Angel say do not be

  211. afraid? Because the human that the Angel

  212. has appeared to is what afraid. The natural response of humans

  213. to anything to holy, to the holy or to the representative of the

  214. holy is fear. Think about Isaiah in chapter 6.

  215. I know if you're not a Bible person, you're like, I don't

  216. know what that is. That's OK.

  217. You should go read it sometime In Isaiah chapter 6, what does

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  218. Isaiah, he finds himself where? In the throne room of God.

  219. And what does he say? He says, woe is me for I'm a man

  220. of unclean lips and I live among a people of unclean lips.

  221. And what what what's what's happening to him in that moment?

  222. He's fearful. He's fearful.

  223. When we find ourselves confronted with the holy or the

  224. representative of the holy, human beings are fearful.

  225. We're afraid. Now, here's the thing.

  226. No Fear is a real deal. Follow me.

  227. We're talking about fear right now, OK, and how we give into

  228. fear. And some of you live in a

  229. constant state of fear. You live in this perpetual state

  230. of fear. We actually choose fear.

  231. We choose it. Fear is bad for us, but it's

  232. natural to us. It's natural to us, it comes

  233. natural to us. We choose fear.

  234. And This is why. Because you and I have thrown

  235. off God's rule in our lives and in this world, we've thrown it

  236. off. We've said, hey, I don't need

  237. God's rule. I don't want God telling me how

  238. to live. I don't want a matter of fact, I

  239. don't want anybody telling me how to live.

  240. I'm my own man, I'm my own woman.

  241. I'm in charge, I'm sovereign over me.

  242. And we throw off a God's rule. And when you and I choose to

  243. throw off God's rule, the only other option is to choose fear

  244. that will now dominate your life.

  245. We choose fear. OK, Stephen, what do you mean?

  246. Think back to Genesis chapter 3. Thinking back to Genesis chapter

Genesis 3 chapter mention Genesis 3 chapter mention

  247. 3, if you, I know some of you have read Genesis, you know the

  248. story. The first humans are in the

  249. garden. Satan comes along in the in the

  250. form of a serpent and he lies to the first humans.

  251. He lies to Eve. And what is the essence of the

  252. lie that he tells? He the essence of the law that

  253. he tells to the first humans is based in fear.

  254. What is the fear? The fear is this.

  255. You have a God doesn't have your best interests at heart.

  256. He's holding out on you. He's not telling you the whole

  257. truth. You're being, it's being you're

  258. being withheld from. You're not getting the whole

  259. story. You're not getting the whole

  260. truth. In other words, the law that was

  261. told by the serpent to the first humans was based in fear.

  262. You do not have a God you can trust.

  263. You do not have a God that's looking out for you.

  264. You have a God who's holding out on you.

  265. When in fact, the very first humans had a God that loved

  266. them, supplied their needs, and was in daily unfettered

  267. relationship with them. And what did the first humans

  268. do? They did.

  269. They did exactly what you and I do most days.

  270. They threw off the rule of their Heavenly Father, they threw it

  271. off, They threw off the rule of God, and they by doing so became

  272. a fearful race. Think about this.

  273. After Adam and Eve eat other fruit, the Bible says that God

  274. came into the garden and was walking in the garden and the

  275. cooler the evening to look for them.

  276. And what were they doing? They were hiding.

  277. They were hiding. You only hide because you are

  278. what? Afraid you are fearful.

  279. You see, when humans throw off the rule of God, they take up

  280. the cloak of fear. And that's a principle you can

  281. in your everyday life. If you throw off the rule of

  282. God, you were taking up the cloak of fear.

  283. And you think, well Steven, is there an in between?

  284. Can I throw off the rule of God and somehow not choose fear?

  285. Friend, I'm sorry, but there isn't.

  286. Either God becomes your sovereign or fear will dominate

  287. your life. That's just the way it is.

  288. That's what the Scriptures teach.

  289. And at the point that Adam and Eve chose to cloak themselves

  290. with fear and throw off the sovereign rule of God, at that

  291. point, a, a detrimental mindset has entered into human beings,

  292. which you and I all suffer from to this day.

  293. And this is the detrimental mindset that you and I, you and

  294. I all suffer from. You ready?

  295. Here's our mindset. You and I think that it's up to

  296. us. It's up to me and it's up to

  297. you. If I'm going to be safe, I have

  298. to make sure that I'm safe. If I'm going to be happy, I have

  299. to make sure that I'm happy. Even to this point.

  300. If I'm going to be right with God, if I'm going to be saved,

  301. then it's up to me to be saved. Now, what is this mindset?

  302. What am I talking about? Well, all of a sudden,

  303. everything that that we think gives life meaning, joy,

  304. happiness, safety, being saved or right with God, you know,

  305. getting rid of our guilt, getting rid of our shame,

  306. getting rid of our of our embarrassment, our sin.

  307. Like everything we think that will give life flourishing and

  308. give life hope. Everything we think that we need

  309. in order to to be happy fulfilled people.

  310. It's up to me to do. And when we think that way, we

  311. have a detrimental mindset that will create fear.

  312. And there are Christians who think this way.

  313. Well, I better be good enough. I better be holy enough.

  314. I better go to church enough. I better give enough money away

  315. so that God is happy with me. Friend, that is not the gospel

  316. of hope drawing you to the heart of God.

  317. That is fear based and it's detrimental to us.

  318. Let me write. Let me give you this.

  319. If you take notes, fear festers when I assume life is up to me.

  320. Fear festers when I assume life is up to me.

  321. When life feels like it depends on me, I will always be afraid.

  322. Because what I know deep down is I'm not up to the task.

  323. And I'll never admit that. I'll tell you I can make it.

  324. I'll pull myself up. I'll get through this, I'll be

  325. happy one day, but that thinking will lead me to always be

  326. afraid. Now the Angel in Luke 2

  327. addresses fear not as something to be managed.

  328. Like hey guys, don't be afraid, it's OK, we can talk through

  329. your fear. The Angel in Luke 2 actually

  330. addresses fear as something to be removed.

  331. The Angel treats fear as something more than just an

  332. emotional problem or an emotional flaw.

  333. For the Angel, this is important.

  334. For the Angel, fear is not emotional.

  335. Fear is spiritual. In other words, for the Angel,

  336. what the Angel understands and what the Bible understands is

  337. that fear is a tool of Satan. It's a tool of the enemy.

  338. It's a weapon of the enemy, your fear.

  339. And my fear is not just like an emotional flaw.

  340. It's not just like, oh, I'm just kind of going through some tough

  341. seasons. I got some bad mental health

  342. issues. No, the, the mental health

  343. problems we have are the outcomes of the spiritual issue

  344. of fear. All right, spiritual this the

  345. spiritual issue of fear is a weapon in the hand of Satan.

  346. And perfect love drops out fear. The Bible says in other words,

  347. and God is love. So God drops out fear.

  348. So if we find ourselves fearful, it is never from God.

  349. It can only be from the enemy who hates you.

  350. Do you follow me? In other words, fear is not

  351. like, oh, I'm really afraid of my life.

  352. And and that's not just like a neutral thing, like, well, I

  353. just, I just tend to be a fearful person.

  354. That's not neutral. That's a spiritual demonic work

  355. that's happening. I know that's too heavy, right,

  356. That we don't want to think that way.

  357. But fear is what fills the space in your heart where you don't

  358. trust God, where you where your heart doesn't trust God like

  359. that part of your heart. And you know, there's parts of

  360. your hearts where you just don't trust God.

  361. I got them. We don't have a long enough

  362. sermon for me to walk you through them.

  363. There are parts of your hearts where you don't trust God in

  364. those places where you don't trust God, that's where fear

  365. fills up that space. This is why fear is the enemy

  366. beneath so many of our problems. Things like anxiety, dread,

  367. catastrophic imaginings. Anybody have catastrophic

  368. imaginings like you just imagine terrible stuff happening to you.

  369. Just me, OK, You, you, there's three of us.

  370. You want to get together, have coffee for all right.

  371. I mean, I feel like I'm, I feel like I'm a screwed up person and

  372. I would love to have some friends.

  373. So. And it turns out there's not

  374. that many of us. Kind of always thought there

  375. were a lot of us. I don't know if I should keep, I

  376. don't know if I should keep being a preacher.

  377. Anyway, I'm kidding. Of course I got to keep being a

  378. preacher. Catastrophic imaginings.

  379. Anger. So if you deal with anger, if

  380. you deal with resentment, if you deal with panic, if you deal

  381. with lying, deceiving, self self protection, deceiving.

  382. You know when you tell lies to make yourself look better or to

  383. protect yourself? Nobody does that, right?

  384. Yeah. Self protection, addiction.

  385. Now, these are mental health nightmares.

  386. They are they They really are. But listen to me carefully.

  387. Those mental health night nightmares, they grow in the

  388. soil of the spiritual problem of fear.

  389. That's the soil they grow in. These emotions.

  390. A fear, anxiety, resentment, panic, lying, self protection,

  391. addiction. These things are downstream from

  392. the waterfall of fear. Fear is at the root of all of

  393. them. Fear is the crushing belief that

  394. life is up to me and God cannot actually be trusted.

  395. Friend, that is the first lie that humans believe and it is

  396. the lie that you are tempted to believe today.

  397. Life is not up to you to fear, to that fear that you have and I

  398. have, and the shepherd's hat to that fear.

  399. The Angel announces 2 words, or three words depending on your

  400. translation. Do not be afraid or fear not.

  401. Fear is not something to be managed.

  402. It's something to be rooted out, something to be removed, the

  403. Angel says fear not. The Angel is not offering

  404. emotional support. Instead, the Angel is offering a

  405. new reality, a new spiritual reality.

  406. The Holy has come near. The perfect love of God has

  407. entered into the fearful space of man, and now this space where

  408. you cannot control anything, a sovereign God who controls all

  409. things has entered into it. And he has come.

  410. Just for you. So fear not.

  411. Do not be afraid. And that leads us to our next

  412. idea this morning. If fear, if permitting fear to

  413. rule is the problem #1 if permitting fear to rule is the

  414. problem, then #2 perceiving the gospel is the solution.

  415. Perceiving the gospel is the solution.

  416. Now today we've read from the NIV 2011, which that was on the

  417. screen. That's what many of you have.

  418. And you may have noticed that when we read that on the screen,

  419. and maybe if you have it in front of you, the word behold

  420. isn't in your translation and it wasn't on the screen.

  421. And the word is actually there in the original Greek, the word

  422. behold. Fear not, do not be afraid.

  423. Behold. I, I give you good news.

  424. The reason that the NIV and some other translations remove the

  425. word behold is because they think it's archaic that people

  426. don't really use the word behold anymore.

  427. Like we don't really walk around and go behold, grab me some

  428. bread. You know what I mean?

  429. Like, I mean, I do in my house. I'm like, behold, make me a

  430. sandwich, but it doesn't happen. But we don't really use the word

  431. behold anymore. And so they make it.

  432. The translators made a decision because it's archaic and like,

  433. hey, let's don't use that. But then there are, there are

  434. translations that that use that original Greek word,

  435. translations like the ESV, the New American Standard Bible,

  436. which happens to be a great translation.

  437. They still include it. Now, why do I, why do I point

  438. that out? Why?

  439. Why did I take the time to tell you that?

  440. Well, because the word behold is important.

  441. The word being there matters because I think that Luke

  442. includes it and I think that the Angel says it because the Angel

  443. was not simply saying, hey, just don't be afraid.

  444. Like just get over it. I think the angel's offering,

  445. listen, I think the angel's offering an alternative to being

  446. afraid. How helpful is it if somebody

  447. says, hey, listen, just stop being so fearful with your life?

  448. Is that helpful? No, if I could bro, I would.

  449. You know what I mean? Like.

  450. I don't need a therapist to tell them.

  451. You guys remember that new heart episode?

  452. Hey, nevermind, I'm showing my age.

  453. I'm 50 in February, you know, stop it 2 words stop it $5.

  454. Please everyone Google that later.

  455. If you watch it on YouTube, you will, you will think you're

  456. like, that was the best something I heard because I got

  457. to see that bit on YouTube. But anyway, so if I could just

  458. stop being fearful, I would. So the Angel is saying more than

  459. just stop being fearful. The angel's offering an

  460. alternative to being fearful. And that alternative is the word

  461. behold. And This is why the word behold

  462. is. It's important.

  463. So the Angel is saying, hey, don't be afraid.

  464. Instead behold. And what does the word behold

  465. mean? The word behold means instead,

  466. look at this, perceive this, take this in deeply.

  467. Behold or beholding is the alternative to fear.

  468. It's what we do as opposed to fear.

  469. And so the word behold means to shift your focus, to take your

  470. eyes off of what frightens you. And you have something to fix

  471. them on. Because if you say, hey, take

  472. your eyes off of what frightens you, and I look over here and

  473. there's nothing, that's what I'm going to do.

  474. I'm going to go back to what frightens me because I have

  475. nothing here to fix my eyes on. And what the Angel is saying is

  476. no, there's an alternative for you to put your eyes on

  477. something different, on something better.

  478. Behold, put your eyes on something better, turn them from

  479. the fear and put them on something better.

  480. And behold does not mean to glance or to just notice.

  481. Behold means to perceive, to absorb, to internalize, to see

  482. it to the bottom, and. So what?

  483. What is the? Angel telling them to behold.

  484. Behold, I have some news. Some good news.

  485. Not advice, not recommendations, but news.

  486. I have some news that changes reality, that makes things

  487. different. So in the midst of.

  488. Your fear right now, the Angel says to the shepherds, and the

  489. word of God says to you in the midst of your fear right now,

  490. look into this news, this good news, the good news that a

  491. Savior has come to remove our sin.

  492. Good news, right? It goes deeper than that.

  493. Good news that a Savior has come to remove the enmity between God

  494. and me, and a Savior has come to make me right with God.

  495. A savior has come to remove my shame from me, to put me back in

  496. right relationship with God, my heavenly Father.

  497. That a Savior has done for me what I could never do for

  498. myself. That's good news.

  499. The gospel is good. News And here's what the Angel

  500. is saying, and here's what I'm trying to teach you today, is

  501. that we allow, we permit fear to rule our lives.

  502. And we wonder why we're miserable and what the Angel has

  503. offered as an alternative and what the text offers as an

  504. alternative is don't permit fear to rule your life.

  505. Perceive the gospel. And perceiving the gospel is the

  506. solution to our fear. Tim Keller says it best.

  507. Listen to this quote by him. It says if you take time to

  508. comprehend or behold what is in the gospel message, it will

  509. remove the fear that has dominated and darkened your

  510. life. To the degree that you truly

  511. behold, gaze at, grasp, relish, internalize, rejoice in the

  512. gospel, to that degree, the fears of your life will be

  513. underminded. Isn't that beautiful?

  514. Man, I miss Keller. Let's think about this for.

  515. A moment fear goes down. The fear in your life will go

  516. down. The fear in your heart will go

  517. down to the to the degree that the gospel truth becomes real to

  518. you. To the degree, not that.

  519. You believe the news, but that you internalize and know that

  520. the news is true. Your fear will go down.

  521. Not to the extent that you hear sermons about the gospel or to

  522. the extent that you go to church and this is what people think.

  523. I got problems in my life, I'm going to go to church.

  524. That doesn't solve your problems.

  525. Sitting through a sermon is not going to fix anything.

  526. I've preached a lot of them. I'm telling you, they don't.

  527. What fixes things? Is what the Angel is saying is

  528. to internalize the beautiful news, the truth of the gospel?

  529. Jesus did not come. Just for people.

  530. But to. Internalize it to the point that

  531. you understand that Jesus doesn't.

  532. Jesus didn't come just for people.

  533. Jesus doesn't just love people. But listen to this.

  534. You internalize it to a point that you say Jesus came for me

  535. and Jesus loves me for that. News changes fear.

  536. It diminishes the power of fear in your life.

  537. The gospel is news. It's not tips for better.

  538. Living. And it certainly isn't moralism.

  539. Don't let me get started on that.

  540. The gospel isn't ethical teaching.

  541. It's not even spiritual inspiration.

  542. So you do good deeds for your neighbors.

  543. I'm all for ethical living, moral living.

  544. I'm all for doing good deeds for your neighbors.

  545. But that is not the point. The gospel.

  546. The gospel is news. News that something has

  547. happened. It happened in history and it is

  548. independent of human beings. Did not come from the philosophy

  549. of man, but it came from the mind of God.

  550. News that God has come into our world.

  551. He has come to you. Not in order to get.

  552. You to do something for him or to behave better for him, but

  553. he's come for you to rescue you and put you back in a

  554. relationship with him. That he did this for you.

  555. The God who wrapped himself in flesh in order to come to us is

  556. a God you can place your total faith in, your total trust in.

  557. And when you place your total faith in this God who came for

  558. you, friend, your fear will dissolve.

  559. This is why perceiving the gospel is the solution to the

  560. fear. Your fear will dissolve as you

  561. trust fully in the God who came for you.

  562. Another Keller. Quote, this one won't be on the

  563. screen, but Steven, you ask, you might say, Steven, how can I

  564. trust God? Like I want to trust God.

  565. I want to believe this. Listen to what Keller said.

  566. I love this, he says. The answer to why you can trust

  567. God. The answer is that that little

  568. baby in the Manger is the mighty Christ of the Lord.

  569. So think, so think, perceive, ponder If the omnipotent Son of

  570. God would radically lose control.

  571. This is what we're all afraid of, right?

  572. Losing control. If the omnipotent Son of God

  573. would radically lose control, and you understand that that's

  574. what Jesus did, the God of creation lost control.

  575. Your biggest fear is losing control.

  576. The guy who made you. Chose to lose control by

  577. becoming a baby. For you when you realize that

  578. then. You can trust him.

  579. And what Keller says is that you that truth should undermine our

  580. fear. So this morning the main idea

  581. that I. Wanted you to walk away with was

  582. simply this. Faith grows.

  583. When we behold the gospel more than when we behold our fear.

  584. That's it. And we unpack 2 ideas.

  585. Permitting fear to rule is the problem, and perceiving the

  586. gospel is the solution. Quite beautiful, right?

  587. But before we go, I. Want to bring your attention to

  588. something really cool about the Shepherds?

  589. And I was tempted to not. Include this because I knew it

  590. would add just a few minutes. But bear with me.

  591. Though, I did not read the part of the text that shows the

  592. shepherd's response to the news. You may know the story.

  593. Once the shepherd's heard. The nudes.

  594. And they beheld it, they internalized it.

  595. They knew it to be true. Something changed.

  596. Inside of them. Something shifted inside.

  597. Of them, Luke tells us that they left their flocks.

  598. It's a big deal. Their livelihood.

  599. They walked away from it, they hurried, they sought out the

  600. baby, they saw the baby and they told others about the baby.

  601. Friend, these are not the. Actions of fearful men are.

  602. They these are the actions. Of bold, courageous men, men of

  603. faith. You see, this is what?

  604. Happens when our faith is awakened and our fear decreases.

  605. Think about it. These men, their circumstances

  606. had not changed. They did not all of a sudden get

  607. better careers. They were still stinky

  608. shepherds, the lowest rung of the rung in the social status of

  609. their culture. Rome was still oppressive.

  610. They were still poor. Their daily reality of living

  611. with stinking sheep had not changed.

  612. And yet fear no longer had a hold on them because faith had

  613. replaced their fear. Faith had replaced their fear.

  614. When you behold the gospel, your fear decreases and your

  615. confidence for action, your confidence for action will rise.

  616. It's not a confidence rooted in self or confidence rooted in

  617. like your own ability to control things.

  618. No, it's a confidence rooted in the one who came into the world

  619. as a baby to save you. You're confident in him.

  620. You trust the news and that will embolden you to take action, to

  621. walk in, and to take hold of what God has called you to.

  622. See, the more deeply you. Behold the gospel, the more

  623. naturally your life begins to move in response, not out of

  624. obligation, but out of wonder. Faith grows not when you strain

  625. to increase it, but when you behold the one who has already

  626. come near. And like the shepherds, that

  627. faith will release you to step into what God has called you to.

  628. Action always follows faith, not because you're obligated, but

  629. because faith will always stir confidence in the God who can't

  630. be trusted does. That make sense, so let me give

  631. you. An action step.

  632. In response to what we've. Learned today, I want you to set

  633. aside a quiet few minutes and write something out in your own

  634. words. You can use your Notes app on

  635. your phone. I want.

  636. You to write out what? You believe the gospel actually

  637. is not a theological definition, but as if you were explaining it

  638. to a friend in a coffee shop. Let me.

  639. Give you a a. Sentence here.

  640. Maybe you can start it this way. So if you take notes, write this

  641. down if you want to take a picture of this, the gospel is

  642. good news because so if you were sitting with a friend at a

  643. coffee shop, you're a believer now do you don't have to raise

  644. your hand, but when I ask this question, say yes or no in your

  645. head. Do you believe the news of the

  646. gospel of Jesus Christ? Do you believe that news?

  647. OK, so if you were. Sitting with a friend at a

  648. coffee shop and you were talking to your friend who's maybe a

  649. believer or not a believer, doesn't matter.

  650. And you started the sentence. This way, if they said to you

  651. why, why do you? Why do you think the gospel is

  652. good news? The gospel is good news.

  653. Because, and just in an organic way, what would you say to your

  654. friend? Come on now, you're a.

  655. Believer you believe this stuff, certainly you can answer.

  656. Certainly we can do this. Provides everlasting hope.

  657. The gospel is good news because be able to write that down and

  658. don't just keep writing. Write as much as you want.

  659. That's the first sentence. But here's the second sentence

  660. directly beneath that sentence. I want you to write this because

  661. this is true. I don't have to fear.

  662. And then you write out the thing that is holding you down.

  663. The fear that has been the loudest lately.

  664. The fear of failing. The fear of being alone.

  665. The fear of finances. The fear of future, of loss, of

  666. anything else that keeps heavy weighing you down.

  667. The fear of grief. The fear of facing the.

  668. Future and then. Take these two.

  669. Sentences and keep them close by during the holiday season.

  670. And maybe your life. Is going good right now, and the

  671. holidays will accentuate that goodness.

  672. Go back and read these two sentences to remember that the

  673. true goodness of the gospel, the true goodness of the Christmas

  674. season is the gospel, not your circumstances that happened to

  675. be good right now. Because give it a minute.

  676. And if your circumstances are not good right now and the

  677. holidays are accentuating the pain and the heartache of your

  678. of your of your circumstances, and keep these sentences close

  679. by. And read them.

  680. Throughout the week, hey, remind yourself the gospel is good news

  681. because. And because the gospel is.

  682. True, I don't have to fear these things.

  683. So how would you explain? It to a friend at a coffee shop.

  684. That's how I want you to write it.

  685. The simple act of reflecting on the gospel is how you behold to

  686. the gospel. And that, friend, is how faith

  687. grows. And it's how fear begins to lose

  688. its authority in your life. So let me say this.

  689. Over you, and then I'll pray for us.

  690. Very simple. Today, do not just hear the

  691. gospel, Behold it. And to the degree that you

  692. behold the truth and the news of the gospel, your fears will lose

  693. the authority in their lives, in your life.

  694. Your fears will be. Diminished as you behold the

  695. gospel, will you stand with me as I pray for us?

  696. Father. Thank you for the truth.

  697. Of the Gospel the. Beautiful truth of the gospel.

  698. I love it so much it invigorates me.

  699. It just for thousands of years, Lord, this truth has been

  700. proclaimed and preached by men much wiser than me.

  701. And women much? Wiser than me and I'm honored to

  702. join in that song. That song, that.

  703. Says there's nothing we can do. We can only receive.

  704. This gift. And Lord, you are the.

  705. One who even awakens us to receive it.

  706. You are. So good, we thank you that at

  707. Christmas time, regardless of our circumstances, good or bad.

  708. We can celebrate. The good news?

  709. That you came for us. That you.

  710. Came for me the name of Christ, we.

  711. Pray Amen if you. Enjoyed this?
