  1. And I'd like to invite you to turn back in the Bibles to Joshua chapter 23, which we read earlier, which you'll find on page 239.

    Joshua 23 chapter mention

  2. 239.

  3. Famous last words have become something of an institution.

  4. Sometimes they're tragic, sometimes they're humorous, sometimes a mixture of both, as in the case of General John Sedgwick,

  5. who was apparently a Union commander in the American Civil War, and who was killed in battle in 1864,

  6. and those who were with him recalled his famous last words as being,

  7. they couldn't hit an elephant at that distance.

  8. Apparently that is true.

  9. Sometimes they're disparaging last words, like Karl Marx, who told his housekeeper, who was hovering at his bedside,

  10. ready to write down his last words for posterity, that last words are for fools who haven't said enough.

  11. But the last words, or the closing speeches of the Bible, have much more serious content and far deeper significance.

  12. And if you think about it, there are lots of last words in the Bible.

  13. The final speeches of Jacob, for example, blessing his twelve sons.

  14. Moses, as he prepares the people to enter the Promised Land.

  15. David, at the end of his long reign and life.

  16. And especially, of course, the Lord Jesus himself.

  17. His famous last words in John 13 to 17, what we often call the Upper Room Discourse.

  18. They are all major features of Scripture.

  19. And here we have Joshua's parting discourses.

  20. In fact, at the end of the book of Joshua, there are three speeches that he makes.

  21. Chapter 22, before our chapter, he says farewell to the two and a half tribes

  22. who are going back across the Jordan to resettle in their allotted territories.

  23. They've been helping with the conquest of Canaan.

  24. They're now dispatched back home east of the Jordan.

  25. And Joshua gives them parting words.

  26. Chapter 24, after our chapter, the last chapter of the book,

  27. is his address to the whole nation as he calls them to choose whom they're going to serve.

  28. Whether it will be the Lord or other gods.

  29. And that famous assertion of Joshua, as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

  30. And here in between, chapter 23, is a chapter that gives his last words to the leaders,

  31. the people who are responsible for the government of the nation,

  32. the elders, the leaders, the judges, and officials.

  33. As Joshua passes on the baton, he says,

  34. I'm old and well advanced in years.

  35. We know later in the book that he died at the age of 110.

  36. And so we're probably about 20, 25 years from the time when they first crossed the Jordan

  37. to enter the land.

  38. And you know the book of Joshua is all about the conquest of the land from the fall of Jericho

  39. and they marched around it seven times and the walls fell flat,

  40. right the way through to the allocation of all the territory that God gave them in the land of Canaan.

  41. And this chapter, at the end, is both a looking back and a looking forward.

  42. I think it's appropriate for January.

  43. We're here on the second Sunday, but we're still at the beginning of a new year.

  44. January named after Janus, the god of paganism, who looked back and looked forward, the two-faced god.

  45. Well, it's a good thing at the beginning of a year, isn't it, to look back in thanksgiving

  46. and to renew our faith and commitment as we look forward in hope to what God has for us.

  47. So I hope this will be an appropriate message, both for this time of the year

  48. and also for our own minds and hearts as we think about the faithfulness of God.

  49. So in verse 1, we get the scene set.

  50. That long time refers to the period of the conquest.

  51. And if you read the book, you'll find some very exciting stories of how God gave the land to his people.

  52. The key to it all is there in those opening verses.

  53. Have a look with me at verse 3.

  54. You yourselves have seen everything the Lord your God has done to all these nations for your sake.

  55. It was the Lord your God who fought for you.

  56. So this is the story of the book.

  57. That God has been in control of a whole situation.

  58. That he has led the people under Joshua to accomplish his plans and purposes.

  59. But supremely, God has been fulfilling his promises all the way through the story.

  60. And now Joshua, near the end of his life, is concerned that the people who will follow him

  61. will be as committed to this God and to his word, as trusting in him as he has been,

  62. and as prepared to launch out in faith to see God work in their generation as Joshua has seen it in his own.

  63. Now, there's a progression in the chapter which I think divides into three sections.

  64. Verses 3 to 8, 9 to 13, and 14 to 16.

  65. And the reason I say that is because you'll see if you look with me at the opening verse of each section

  66. that there's a similarity in the way in which Joshua approaches it.

  67. So verse 3 talks about everything the Lord has done for you, how the Lord has fought for you.

  68. Verse 8 talks about the Lord has driven out before you great and powerful nations to this day.

  69. And then verse 14, where Joshua talks about his own imminent departure.

  70. But he says, you know that not one of all the good promises of the Lord your God has failed.

  71. Every promise has been fulfilled.

  72. Not one has failed.

  73. Now, like many a good preacher after him, Joshua repeats his big idea three times.

  74. In each of the paragraphs, this fantastic truth, this central assertion,

  75. that everything that they are now experiencing, the lands that they have not themselves won,

  76. but that God has given them as they've trusted him and experienced his power at work through them.

  77. Everything that is theirs today is theirs because God has chosen them, God has promised,

  78. and God has fulfilled his promises.

  79. But he doesn't just repeat himself.

  80. It begins by looking back, but as the speech goes on,

  81. he becomes increasingly concerned about the present and about the future,

  82. and particularly about warnings that he feels he needs to give

  83. because it is as easy to lose the blessings as it has been to receive them by God's grace.

  84. So I want to look at this Old Testament preacher's message to his generation.

  85. And as we do that, I'm sure we'll find many parallels to us.

  86. And as we see it coming to its fruition in the Lord Jesus,

  87. we can find encouragement, yes, and challenge for the year that lies ahead of us.

  88. Look with me firstly then at what I want to describe as what you have seen.

  89. What you have seen.

  90. That is verses 3 to 8.

  91. And not surprisingly, at the end of this long and eventful life,

  92. Joshua starts by looking back.

  93. But he's not a nostalgia buff.

  94. He's not looking back in self-indulgence.

  95. He's not saying, oh, those were the days, weren't they?

  96. What he's doing is reminding his audience of how dependent they are on God for everything that they have.

  97. He calls upon the leaders to review their common experience of God's goodness,

  98. to remember what God has done,

  99. and the immense changes that they've witnessed in their lifetime,

  100. and the daily benefits that they receive from the hands of the Lord.

  101. Now that is always a sound spiritual instinct.

  102. Not to forget all his benefits and blessings.

  103. And as we start a new year, we should look back with thanksgiving.

  104. We've been doing that in our worship this morning.

  105. As we praise God for his faithfulness to us,

  106. for the way in which he's led us,

  107. some of us through particularly difficult circumstances in recent days,

  108. some of us in particularly joyful ways.

  109. We've all got a variety of experience,

  110. but at the heart of it all,

  111. there is the faithfulness of God to his word and to his promises.

  112. And as we review that, and do not forget his benefits,

  113. as we give thanks,

  114. and discipline ourselves in our own personal times of devotion,

  115. to recall the blessings of God,

  116. that will generate our faith for the future.

  117. We look back and see that all the blessings we now enjoy

  118. have been God's gracious gift to us.

  119. And that makes us realise how dependent we are on him

  120. for every day of this new year,

  121. every day of our lives,

  122. for every breath that we breathe.

  123. That's why the New Testament is always concerned

  124. that godly people are thankful people.

  125. You can tell how, in a sense,

  126. what your spiritual health is like

  127. in terms of how thankful you are to God.

  128. How thankful you are that God is God.

  129. That this is his character.

  130. That he is faithful to all his promises,

  131. that he is always carrying out

  132. what he commits himself to do.

  133. Thankful too for the circumstances of our lives,

  134. for the overruling providence

  135. by which he guides us and directs us

  136. and opens doors for us and shuts other doors,

  137. keeps us from dangers,

  138. directs us in the way,

  139. as every day we commit our way to him.

  140. And we pray,

  141. Lord,

  142. today I want to submit myself

  143. to your authority,

  144. to your lordship.

  145. There will be many, many things

  146. that we can thank God for,

  147. supremely,

  148. that he sent his son,

  149. the Lord Jesus,

  150. to die on that cross in our place.

  151. And that we have access

  152. into his presence this morning.

  153. We've been able to pray.

  154. We know our sins have been forgiven.

  155. We know that we go out

  156. with the Holy Spirit within us

  157. to change us from the inside out.

  158. These are the great blessings

  159. of being a Christian.

  160. Be a thankful Christian.

  161. And it's never too early to start.

  162. I worked with a man called Lee Samuel,

  163. who some of you may know

  164. in my early years in ministry.

  165. And Lee Samuel used to say

  166. to his congregation,

  167. if you want to be a gracious old lady,

  168. be a gracious young lady.

  169. And if you want to be a faithful old man,

  170. be a faithful young man.

  171. In other words,

  172. you build every day of your life

  173. a character,

  174. an attitude.

  175. You become who you are

  176. because of practice.

  177. And we can practice being faithful,

  178. thankful,

  179. rejoicing people

  180. in all that the Lord has given us.

  181. Now, in this context,

  182. Joshua draws special attention

  183. to what he calls the nations.

  184. Back in verse 3,

  185. you yourselves have seen

  186. everything the Lord your God

  187. has done to all these nations.

  188. It's really a technical term

  189. for anyone,

  190. any nation,

  191. that is outside the covenant

  192. of God's grace.

  193. And that means every nation

  194. except Israel at this point

  195. in Old Testament history.

  196. Seven times in this chapter,

  197. he refers to the nations.

  198. Now, they have been,

  199. of course,

  200. opposing what God has been doing

  201. in giving the land

  202. to his people.

  203. And many of those nations

  204. have fought tooth and nail

  205. against the conquest.

  206. But as verse 4 tells us,

  207. remember how I have allotted

  208. as an inheritance

  209. for your tribes

  210. all the land of the nations

  211. that remain,

  212. and these are the nations

  213. that I conquered.

  214. The I is Joshua speaking,

  215. but speaking as the agent of God,

  216. that I have conquered

  217. between the Jordan

  218. and the Mediterranean.

  219. And the Lord your God himself

  220. will drive them out

  221. of your way.

  222. So here is the great blessings

  223. that God has given.

  224. Again and again,

  225. the book has shown us

  226. that it's God

  227. who has granted Israel victory

  228. as he promised.

  229. And already the land

  230. has been divided up

  231. and allotted to the tribes

  232. and to the family units,

  233. including those parts of the land

  234. which are still

  235. unconquered at this point.

  236. But looking back

  237. to what has been accomplished

  238. is a tremendous stimulus

  239. to go on believing

  240. for the future.

  241. There's no shortage

  242. of ability with God.

  243. He's the one

  244. who has driven them out

  245. and will drive them out.

  246. He will push them on

  247. before you

  248. and you will take possession

  249. of their land

  250. as the Lord your God

  251. promised you.

  252. Now we're in a very

  253. different position of course.

  254. We're not driving out tribes

  255. from another land

  256. or anything like that.

  257. But as the people of God,

  258. in a world where there is

  259. hostility against the word of God

  260. and the purposes of God,

  261. in a world where people

  262. very often turn their backs

  263. upon God

  264. when things get hard

  265. and difficult,

  266. we need to remind ourselves

  267. as we look back

  268. on what we have seen

  269. that there is no shortage

  270. of ability with God.

  271. His name is the Lord

  272. and whenever you see the Lord

  273. in capital letters

  274. in the Old Testament,

  275. it's the covenant name of God,

  276. Yahweh, Jehovah,

  277. the I am who I am,

  278. the unchanging,

  279. 100% dependable,

  280. ever faithful God.

  281. And what he has done,

  282. he will continue to do.

  283. Now when we get to the second part

  284. of the chapter,

  285. that's what he's saying

  286. in verse 9.

  287. If you look down at verse 9,

  288. the Lord has driven out before you

  289. great and powerful nations.

  290. To this day,

  291. no one has been able to

  292. withstand you.

  293. One of you raps a thousand

  294. because the Lord your God

  295. fights for you

  296. just as he promised.

  297. See how he takes them

  298. back to the power

  299. that is God's power.

  300. It's so easy for us,

  301. isn't it,

  302. to bring God down

  303. to our level.

  304. For us to have effectively

  305. a pocket-sized God

  306. whom we do sincerely believe in

  307. but whom we feel

  308. that the pressures

  309. and the problems

  310. and the anti-Christian forces

  311. that are at work

  312. all the way through our culture,

  313. they're really too big.

  314. Too big for us to deal with.

  315. And we sometimes tend to think

  316. too big for God to deal with.

  317. And we need to remember

  318. that the promises of God

  319. are what dictate

  320. the purposes of God.

  321. That God is committed

  322. to building his church.

  323. That he is committed

  324. to bringing

  325. an innumerable company

  326. of men and women

  327. from every tribe

  328. and kindred and nation

  329. out of the darkness

  330. into the marvellous light

  331. of Christ.

  332. I went to preach

  333. in a church

  334. not too far from here

  335. in West London

  336. a few years ago,

  337. probably three or four years ago.

  338. And I was interviewed

  339. about the Cornhill training course

  340. and I shared a little bit

  341. about the numbers

  342. of students that we had

  343. and the variety

  344. of backgrounds they came from,

  345. different nationalities

  346. and so on.

  347. And at the end

  348. a gentleman came up to me

  349. and he said,

  350. I'm really surprised

  351. by what you said

  352. in the interview this morning.

  353. So I said,

  354. why?

  355. And he said,

  356. well,

  357. to think that young people

  358. who are apparently

  359. quite able

  360. and who could be

  361. earning a good living

  362. in various ways

  363. will be giving themselves

  364. to train for Christian ministry

  365. which is such a defeated

  366. and out of date thing.

  367. I'm just amazed

  368. that you would have

  369. anybody who wanted to do it.

  370. So I said to him,

  371. how long have you been

  372. coming to this church?

  373. Oh, about 20 years.

  374. You see,

  375. it's so easy,

  376. isn't it,

  377. to get down

  378. into the way

  379. that the world thinks

  380. that Christianity

  381. is finished,

  382. that it's had it,

  383. that there's no real way

  384. in which it could ever

  385. impact our culture

  386. and to take our judgment

  387. from BDC2

  388. or Channel 4

  389. or the Sunday papers

  390. or whatever it is

  391. and to think

  392. that Christianity

  393. really has gone,

  394. its day is over.

  395. But what the world

  396. is governed by

  397. is the promises of God.

  398. the faithfulness of God

  399. who is the creator.

  400. And if you put

  401. the promises of God

  402. against the

  403. admittedly huge challenges

  404. of the present situation,

  405. then you begin to see

  406. when you look back

  407. and as you see

  408. what God has done

  409. in the past

  410. and indeed what God

  411. has done in our lives,

  412. that of all these promises,

  413. not one has failed.

  414. Can you think of a promise

  415. of God that he's not

  416. been faithful to?

  417. Of course not.

  418. He's delivered us

  419. in the blessing

  420. of our conversion

  421. from the world

  422. and the flesh

  423. and the devil.

  424. He's given us

  425. the knowledge

  426. of sins forgiven.

  427. He enables us

  428. to grow in grace

  429. and in godliness

  430. of character.

  431. We're all testimonies

  432. of God's rich resources

  433. and covenant commitment

  434. to us,

  435. his people.

  436. But you know,

  437. no faith is strong

  438. if it isn't a growing faith.

  439. No virtue is safe

  440. if it is not

  441. an enthusiastic virtue.

  442. None of us is secure

  443. if we are not

  444. totally dependent

  445. on God's grace

  446. and mercy.

  447. what you have seen

  448. teaches us

  449. that the world

  450. is governed

  451. by the word of God.

  452. And the word

  453. is the active expression

  454. of the will

  455. and purpose of God

  456. that he carries out

  457. through his son

  458. and in the power

  459. of his spirit.

  460. Second thing

  461. that he says,

  462. not what you have seen

  463. but what you must understand.

  464. Come back with me

  465. to verse 7.

  466. Here,

  467. he is commanding

  468. the people

  469. to be strong

  470. and careful

  471. to obey

  472. the Lord's word.

  473. And then in verse 7,

  474. do not associate

  475. with these nations

  476. that remain among you.

  477. Don't invoke

  478. the names

  479. of their gods

  480. or swear by them.

  481. You must not serve them

  482. or bow down to them.

  483. But you're to hold fast

  484. to the Lord your God.

  485. Now here is the danger.

  486. We could call it

  487. complacency.

  488. A good proportion

  489. of the land

  490. has been taken.

  491. But there is still

  492. very much more

  493. to be possessed.

  494. If that's going to happen,

  495. Joshua knows

  496. that it will require

  497. razor sharp clarity,

  498. trusting the promises,

  499. and wonderfully

  500. renewed energy

  501. from God

  502. if they are going

  503. to pursue

  504. his purposes

  505. and take over

  506. the whole land.

  507. And what they've seen

  508. is that God

  509. fights for his people

  510. when his people

  511. are active

  512. and obedient

  513. in doing his will.

  514. He didn't do it

  515. all for them.

  516. They had to have

  517. an army.

  518. They had to have

  519. battles.

  520. Sometimes there was

  521. no battle like Jericho.

  522. Other times there were

  523. battles in which

  524. they had to fight.

  525. But all the energy

  526. and dynamic

  527. for the victories

  528. that they experienced

  529. belonged to the Lord.

  530. and those qualities

  531. are available

  532. as his people

  533. continue to fight

  534. the good fight.

  535. But the danger is

  536. that they will settle

  537. for a comfortable

  538. level of compromise

  539. that doesn't inquire,

  540. doesn't really require

  541. such discipline

  542. or sacrifice

  543. or commitment.

  544. And then the process

  545. of verse 7

  546. will take over.

  547. And they will

  548. gradually merge

  549. with the pagan

  550. nations that

  551. remain in the land

  552. mixing with

  553. those people

  554. beginning to

  555. listen to the

  556. to what they're

  557. told about their

  558. gods.

  559. Worshipping those

  560. gods more and

  561. more because

  562. they're much less

  563. demanding than the

  564. God of Israel.

  565. They're much more

  566. easily influenced

  567. than the God of

  568. truth and

  569. righteousness.

  570. righteousness.

  571. And so they're

  572. much more attractive

  573. as a religious

  574. option because

  575. you can control

  576. them.

  577. Of course we know

  578. that they're

  579. actually lifeless

  580. lumps of wood

  581. and stone,

  582. artifacts made

  583. by the hands

  584. of men.

  585. But they're very

  586. attractive because

  587. this sort of

  588. God is in your

  589. pocket.

  590. And the real

  591. God isn't.

  592. And so the

  593. danger is acute.

  594. And verses 12

  595. and 13 over the

  596. page warn them

  597. in some detail,

  598. sorry it's at the

  599. bottom of the page,

  600. warn them in some

  601. detail about the

  602. outcome of these

  603. things.

  604. If you turn away,

  605. verse 12,

  606. and ally yourselves

  607. with the survivors

  608. of these nations

  609. that remain among

  610. you, and if you

  611. intermarry with

  612. them and associate

  613. with them, then

  614. you may be sure

  615. that the Lord your

  616. God will no longer

  617. drive out these

  618. nations before you.

  619. Instead they will

  620. become snares and

  621. traps for you,

  622. whips on your back

  623. and thorns in your

  624. eyes, until you

  625. perish from this

  626. good land which

  627. the Lord your God

  628. has given you.

  629. See here is the

  630. danger, that this

  631. sort of complacency

  632. will lead them to

  633. compromise, that

  634. they will in the

  635. end be indistinguishable

  636. from the people

  637. whom they're supposed

  638. to be replacing.

  639. And if that

  640. happens, then God

  641. who owns the land

  642. will take it away

  643. from them and they

  644. will be dispossessed

  645. by the God who

  646. first gave it to

  647. them.

  648. Now that is a

  649. very powerful

  650. warning, isn't it?

  651. This is what we've

  652. got to understand,

  653. that there is no

  654. blessing that God

  655. gives us which,

  656. if we are unwilling

  657. to respond in faith

  658. and obedience, if we

  659. treat it lightly and

  660. compromise with the

  661. forces of godless

  662. evil around us,

  663. there is no blessing

  664. which is secure in

  665. itself unless we are

  666. positively related to

  667. God day by day.

  668. Now of course the

  669. work of God is an

  670. eternal work, he

  671. saves us by his

  672. grace, he calls us

  673. as his people, he

  674. makes us his own.

  675. But our experience

  676. of the blessings of

  677. God are dependent

  678. upon that faith

  679. connection with him

  680. that trusts him

  681. and obeys him in

  682. all the varied

  683. circumstances of

  684. life.

  685. And the big danger

  686. is that they will

  687. lose out on what

  688. they could enjoy

  689. because somehow

  690. they become more

  691. like the nations

  692. around them than

  693. like the separate

  694. people of God

  695. that he has called

  696. them to become.

  697. You really don't

  698. need me to apply

  699. that.

  700. We see around us

  701. all sorts of

  702. idolatry.

  703. The messages that

  704. impact our lives

  705. every day are that

  706. life is found in

  707. this or that,

  708. anything other

  709. than God of

  710. miracles.

  711. And yes, here we

  712. are on Sunday

  713. morning, rightly

  714. rehearsing our

  715. faith in God,

  716. rightly giving

  717. ourselves at the

  718. beginning of another

  719. week to an hour

  720. or so by which our

  721. lives are set in

  722. shape with God

  723. and by which we

  724. are able to

  725. govern and direct

  726. our lives for the

  727. coming days.

  728. But you know that

  729. as soon as we leave

  730. here, and particularly

  731. tomorrow at work

  732. and at school and

  733. at college and in

  734. the hospital or

  735. wherever it is we

  736. are, those messages

  737. of the nations

  738. around us will

  739. bombard us again

  740. and again and

  741. again.

  742. They will tell us

  743. that what you

  744. really need is to

  745. look like this or

  746. to own that or to

  747. have this experience

  748. or to be that sort

  749. of person.

  750. And again and

  751. again as the

  752. world and the

  753. flesh and the

  754. devil impinge

  755. upon us, our

  756. danger is that we

  757. become complacent in

  758. the blessings we

  759. have and then we

  760. begin to compromise

  761. and we begin to

  762. just drift a little

  763. here and a little

  764. there and before

  765. we know where we

  766. are, we are really

  767. not very distinguishable

  768. from the world

  769. around us.

  770. Idolatry is

  771. powerful because it

  772. is something we

  773. think we can

  774. control.

  775. It's much easier

  776. to follow the

  777. idols of my heart

  778. than to submit

  779. that heart to the

  780. true and living

  781. God.

  782. He will make

  783. demands of me.

  784. He will acquire

  785. holiness in my

  786. life.

  787. He will not want

  788. me to be making

  789. those compromises.

  790. And in his

  791. mercy and his

  792. love he cares

  793. for us enough

  794. not to let us

  795. get away with

  796. it.

  797. So what Joshua

  798. is saying to

  799. these people is

  800. true for all

  801. covenant people in

  802. the new as well

  803. as in the old

  804. covenant.

  805. That while all

  806. the blessings that

  807. we enjoy are out

  808. of God's pure

  809. grace and because

  810. of his mercy and

  811. love to us and

  812. he is an

  813. everlasting father

  814. and a God of

  815. covenant mercy who

  816. will never let us

  817. go and never let

  818. us down.

  819. Nevertheless we

  820. are not to be

  821. complacent about

  822. that.

  823. If we want to

  824. experience that in

  825. our lives then we

  826. must look out for

  827. the tendency to

  828. compromise.

  829. We must look out

  830. at those areas where

  831. we are becoming much

  832. more like the world

  833. than like the Lord

  834. Jesus.

  835. And we must in our

  836. need cling to him

  837. and ask him for his

  838. grace and help to

  839. enable us to think

  840. straight and then to

  841. live straight in our

  842. generation as the

  843. people of the

  844. living God.

  845. The last thing that

  846. he says is really

  847. that, the future,

  848. how you must live.

  849. What you've seen,

  850. everything you have

  851. is God's good

  852. gift to you and

  853. that is true for us

  854. in Christ and in the

  855. gospel.

  856. What you must

  857. understand is that

  858. God will never turn

  859. his back upon his

  860. promises.

  861. But we can live as

  862. it were out of sync

  863. with God.

  864. We can be Christians

  865. who are Christian in

  866. name but in

  867. practice.

  868. we're not actually

  869. allowing God to

  870. change us.

  871. We're too easily

  872. slipping into the

  873. way that the world

  874. reacts.

  875. So what is the

  876. counteractive to that?

  877. The third thing he

  878. tells us is how you

  879. must live.

  880. What you've seen,

  881. what you must

  882. understand, how you

  883. must live.

  884. And I'm thankful

  885. that this practical

  886. instruction is so

  887. clear and applicable

  888. to us.

  889. Just have a look

  890. with me at verse

  891. six.

  892. Be very strong,

  893. be careful to

  894. obey all that is

  895. written in the book

  896. of the Lord Moses

  897. without turning aside

  898. to the right or to

  899. the left.

  900. Now if you know

  901. your Joshua, you'll

  902. know that that's what

  903. he was told in

  904. chapter one, right at

  905. the beginning of the

  906. book.

  907. To follow wholeheartedly

  908. all that God had

  909. revealed through

  910. Moses in the first

  911. five books of the

  912. Bible.

  913. The seedbed of the

  914. whole Bible.

  915. The context there

  916. was the question as

  917. to whether Joshua

  918. would prove to be

  919. a worthy leader

  920. of Israel, a worthy

  921. successor to Moses.

  922. And now as his

  923. wonderfully fruitful

  924. and successful life

  925. is reviewed at the

  926. end, this could

  927. really be a summary

  928. of it all.

  929. Indeed, when we

  930. come to the very

  931. last chapter, 24

  932. and verse 29, we

  933. find that the last

  934. thing that we're

  935. told about Joshua

  936. is that he died

  937. 110 years old

  938. as the servant

  939. of the Lord.

  940. That's his official

  941. obituary, if you

  942. like.

  943. It's exactly the same

  944. language as was used

  945. of Moses.

  946. Moses died, never

  947. saw the promised land,

  948. but he was taken by

  949. God into his presence

  950. as the servant of

  951. the Lord.

  952. And now Joshua, the

  953. next generation, is

  954. similarly given that

  955. accolade.

  956. He is the servant

  957. of the Lord.

  958. Because verse 6 has

  959. been the motto of

  960. his life.

  961. Strength lies in

  962. obedience to the

  963. word of God,

  964. without deviation.

  965. The word of Jesus

  966. given to us in the

  967. New Testament, all

  968. the instructions he

  969. gave to his

  970. disciples, all that

  971. his spirit inspired

  972. the apostles to

  973. write as instructions

  974. for our lives in

  975. the epistles.

  976. This is what leads

  977. to the separation

  978. from idolatry, which

  979. will give to us a

  980. Christian life that

  981. is pleasing to God

  982. and satisfying to

  983. us.

  984. Because only the

  985. word of God can

  986. break the hold of

  987. the idols of our

  988. hearts.

  989. By revealing the

  990. false and stimulating

  991. the true, by

  992. leading us to

  993. trust God and then

  994. to obey him because

  995. we trust him, the

  996. way to conquer our

  997. idols, the way to

  998. live lives that

  999. count for God in

  1000. our generation, is

  1001. daily disciplined

  1002. obedience to the

  1003. word of God in

  1004. scripture.

1005. If we trust him, we

  1006. will obey him.

  1007. If we don't obey

  1008. him, it's because we

  1009. don't really trust

  1010. him.

1011. So we need to keep

  1012. those channels open,

  1013. the channels that

  1014. say, yes, I do

  1015. believe your word,

  1016. Lord, I know that

  1017. it's good and

  1018. perfect.

  1019. I know that my

  1020. sinful heart takes

1021. me away from it so

1022. often and I fail you

  1023. so frequently, but

  1024. today I'm coming

  1025. back to you and

  1026. asking you that that

  1027. living, enduring

  1028. word of God will

  1029. shape my thinking,

  1030. shape my living,

  1031. direct my actions.

  1032. And it's as the

  1033. word of God, in

  1034. all the scriptures

  1035. and supremely in

  1036. the living word, the

  1037. word made fresh, the

  1038. Lord Jesus rules in

  1039. our minds and

  1040. hearts, that we are

  1041. people who are

  1042. useful in God's

  1043. hands.

  1044. So that's the first

  1045. thing, how you must

  1046. live, you must allow

1047. every word of God, he

1048. says to his hearers, to

  1049. shape your responses.

  1050. But then it's more

  1051. than that, verse 8.

1052. But you are to cling to

1053. or hold fast to the

1054. Lord your God as you

  1055. have until now.

1056. That word cling is a

  1057. very strong adhesive

  1058. verb.

  1059. It's the Hebrew word

  1060. for glue really.

1061. You are to be glued to

  1062. God, he says.

1063. It was used of the

  1064. husband cleaving to

1065. his wife and the two

  1066. become one flesh.

1067. Now it speaks then of

  1068. a total commitment,

  1069. loyal devotion,

  1070. deep affection.

  1071. It's a verb that was

1072. used in metal work of

  1073. two metals being

  1074. soldered together so

  1075. that they cannot be

  1076. separated.

  1077. Now he says that's

  1078. what your reaction to

1079. God is to be like.

  1080. That is what the

  1081. Lord looks for from

  1082. his people.

  1083. To give ourselves to

  1084. him.

  1085. To cling to him.

  1086. And the very poignant

  1087. thing is that the

1088. verb is used again in

  1089. verse 12.

1090. Where it says if you

  1091. turn away and ally

  1092. yourselves.

1093. Now that is exactly the

  1094. same verb as

  1095. translated in verse 8

  1096. as hold fast.

  1097. Exactly the same

  1098. verse.

1099. If you turn away and

  1100. cling to the

  1101. survivors of the

  1102. nations.

  1103. Stick to them.

  1104. It's a really shocking

  1105. thought that isn't it?

  1106. That God's redeemed

  1107. people could go back

1108. to paganism and be no

  1109. different from the

  1110. culture all around

  1111. them.

  1112. It's an almost

  1113. unthinkable idea and

  1114. yet which of us

  1115. doesn't know how

  1116. easily that drift can

  1117. happen in our lives.

  1118. So you've got to

  1119. remain stuck to God.

  1120. It's true in our

  1121. marriages.

  1122. Good marriages don't

  1123. just develop.

  1124. They need investment,

  1125. time, love, thought,

  1126. speech, actions.

  1127. They require commitment.

  1128. And true knowledge of

  1129. God doesn't just

  1130. happen.

  1131. You've got to invest

  1132. your time in it.

  1133. You've got to give

  1134. yourself to his word.

  1135. You've got to spend

  1136. time in his presence,

  1137. in prayer.

1138. And as we cling to

  1139. the Lord, then those

  1140. things that would be

  1141. snares and traps and

1142. whips and thorns in our

  1143. experience because we're

  1144. tempted to compromise,

1145. will be removed as we

  1146. grow in our knowledge

  1147. and love of him.

1148. No, don't cling to the

  1149. nations.

1150. Don't get stuck to the

  1151. culture.

1152. Cling to the Lord your

  1153. God.

1154. Be very careful to obey.

1155. You are to hold fast to

  1156. the Lord.

  1157. And lastly, perhaps the

  1158. greatest verse in the

  1159. whole chapter, verse 11.

1160. So be very careful to

1161. love the Lord your God.

1162. See, that is the secret

  1163. of the baton being

  1164. passed in the next

  1165. generation.

  1166. Notice how intentional

  1167. it is.

1168. Be very careful to love

  1169. the Lord your God.

  1170. Give your attention to

  1171. it, he says.

1172. Make this the heart of

  1173. your living and your

  1174. discipleship.

1175. Love the Lord your God.

  1176. We know elsewhere in

  1177. the Old Testament and

  1178. endorsed by the Lord

1179. Jesus in the New, that

  1180. that takes everything we

  1181. have with all your

1182. heart and soul and mind

  1183. and strength.

1184. It is the first and

  1185. greatest commandment and

1186. the second is like it.

  1187. Love your neighbour as

  1188. yourself.

1189. On these hang all the

  1190. law and the prophets.

1191. And this is the heart of

  1192. our faith.

1193. It's the heart of our

  1194. relationship with God.

1195. So as I close, I want to

1196. encourage you to look on

  1197. this year 2012 as a year

1198. of growing in your love

  1199. for God.

1200. Now that doesn't mean just

  1201. warm feelings, though there

  1202. will be an emotional

  1203. aspect to it.

1204. But it means the sort of

  1205. love that puts his

  1206. concerns first.

1207. That says, what can I do

  1208. for him?

1209. How can I serve him more?

1210. How can I give to him

1211. who gave so much for me?

1212. For me that love finds its

1213. focus in the Lord Jesus

  1214. himself.

1215. We love him because he

  1216. first loved us.

1217. And every time I look back

1218. at the cross, every time I

1219. see my own sinfulness and

1220. my own need of his grace,

1221. every time I remember how

1222. he gave himself up there

1223. for you and for me as he

  1224. conquered all our enemies,

1225. sin and death and the

1226. devil, when he fought for

  1227. us and achieved our

1228. salvation on the cross of

  1229. Calvary.

1230. And how through that we

  1231. have entered into the

1232. rest of peace with God

1233. and knowing that our sins

1234. are forgiven and that our

  1235. lives are in his

  1236. safekeeping.

1237. Every time I do that,

1238. my heart is moved to love

  1239. him more.

1240. It's so weak and faint.

  1241. Remember that hymn that

1242. says, Lord, it is my chief

1243. complaint that my love is

  1244. weak and faint.

1245. Yet I do love you and adore.

1246. Oh, for grace to love you

  1247. more.

1248. And I want to ask you this

1249. morning, do you really love

  1250. the Lord?

  1251. Do you love him?

1252. Are you prepared to give your

  1253. life for him?

1254. Are you prepared to follow

  1255. wherever he leads you?

1256. Is your confidence not in

1257. your record of what you've

1258. done for him, but in his

1259. record of what he's done

  1260. for you?

1261. All that it means for him

  1262. to be the Lord.

1263. That's what prompts from us

1264. this response of love that

1265. clings to him, that obeys

1266. him, and that says, oh Lord

1267. Jesus, I do want to be more

  1268. like you.

1269. And I do want my life to be a

1270. channel of love for you and

  1271. love for others.

1272. If you love him, you'll

1273. express it in praise and

  1274. worship.

1275. You'll feel it in the

1276. assurance of faith and deep

  1277. gratitude.

1278. You'll want to speak well of

1279. him wherever you go, whenever

  1280. you can.

1281. You'll want to serve him, to

1282. please him, to live for him.

1283. Yes, even to suffer and to

  1284. die for him.

  1285. That's the challenge that

1286. Joshua presents to the up

  1287. and coming generation.

1288. And it's the challenge that

  1289. God continually presents to

1290. all our hearts, whether we're

1291. young or old, whether we're

1292. new Christians or have been

1293. on the road for many years.

1294. It's the challenge we all

  1295. face.

1296. As we look to the future,

1297. are we going to be people who

1298. because of what we've seen

1299. and because of what we

  1300. understand, live lives that

1301. obey the truth, cling to the

1302. Lord and love him with

  1303. everything we have?

1304. He'll give us the grace to do

1305. it if we're prepared to plug

  1306. in to the supply.

  1307. Let's pray.
