  1. And I'm going to turn to Luke chapter 3. Luke chapter 3. I'm going to look at that passage that we read together. It's on page 1030.

Luke 3 chapter mention Luke 3 chapter mention

  2. Stick it in your Bibles. And so we're going to jump around quite a bit this morning.

  3. Now, when you come to a passage like this, there are two approaches really that you could take.

  4. And one we could call it the about me approach. And if you do that, you can get two sermons out of it.

  5. The first sermon would focus really on verses 21 and 22. And it would be about the importance of being baptized.

  6. And the first point would be from verse 21. Well, we should be baptized because Jesus is baptized.

  7. Point two would come from verse 22. There's a threefold blessing that comes to those who are baptized.

  8. There's a special touch of the Holy Spirit. There's a knowledge of the love of God. And there's the pleasure of God.

  9. And then you could skip the genealogy, couldn't you? You could skip that from verse 23, really, to 37.

  10. And go straight to chapter 4, verses 114. Genealogies are a bit like appendix, aren't they?

  11. Very often people think, well, they're best totally ignored or even removed completely.

  12. And that's what people think about genealogies.

  13. So we come to our second sermon in chapter 4.

  14. And it would be a three-pointer. It would be a strategy for avoiding temptation.

  15. The point in verse 1 would be, be filled with the Holy Spirit.

  16. And then the second then would be, from verse 2, be alert in times of weakness.

  17. Jesus was hungry.

  18. And then point 3 would be, immersed in the Bible. Jesus quotes the Bible.

  19. And the conclusion to that three-point sermon, be filled with the Spirit, be alert in times of weakness, and quote lots of the Bible,

  20. would be, if you follow that procedure, the devil will leave you, verse 13.

  21. Now, any of that, some of that, very little of that, is true.

  22. But there are sermons out there like that.

  23. But let me tell you, I am absolutely convinced that that has got nothing to do with Luke 3 and 4.

  24. Except in a very broad sense that we might come back to.

  25. And the passage, although I talked about the Trinity in verse 22,

  26. the passage is not actually a theological discourse on the Trinity.

  27. There's lots of reformed preachers that take it like that.

  28. What is Luke about?

  29. Luke is about God.

  30. The Gospel of Luke is about God and his purpose for the whole world.

  31. Through John the Baptist and Jesus, Luke's project is to give us certainty about these things, isn't it?

  32. That is why Luke has written the book.

  33. Just flip back to Luke chapter 1.

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  34. He has written to give Theophilus, this guy, an orderly account,

  35. so that, verse 4, you may know the certainty of things that you've been taught.

  36. It's not about how great baptism is.

  37. It's not a doctrinal treatise on the Trinity.

  38. It's not about a handy way to resist temptation.

  39. To take it that way throws us back on technique or ritual rather than Jesus.

  40. So the second approach I want to take this morning,

  41. is the first approach it's about me,

  42. and the second approach is it's all about Jesus.

  43. It's about Jesus.

  44. The reason why I'm taking a bigger chunk this morning is there's one big theme.

  45. There's one big theme that unites the whole chapter,

  46. and it flows from the earlier chapters of Luke.

  47. Now John has just finished his work of preparation,

  48. but in verse 20, Herod has locked him up.

  49. Herod has put him in prison.

  50. In verse 21, Jesus makes his first public appearance.

  51. And our section here, from 321 to 413,

  52. is concerned with Jesus' preparation, if I can put it like that.

  53. Preparation for the start of his public ministry in the synagogue.

  54. So from 14, verse 4, you see Jesus comes out in public.

  55. He starts to teach.

  56. Now, crassly, if you want to put it like this,

  57. this section is a little bit like when you've left home,

  58. and you've gone off to university,

  59. or you're faffing around doing little jobs,

  60. before you get your professional qualifications,

  61. and you start your job proper.

  62. Your career.

  63. That is a crass description of what is going on.

  64. But that is what is going on.

  65. It is about the qualifications of Jesus to do the job.

  66. To do the job he's called to do.

  67. So what is the big theme of the passage?

  68. You don't need to be a rocket scientist, do you?

  69. Look down at the theme.

  70. It is there.

  71. It is Jesus, the Son of God.

  72. So verse 22, you are my Son.

  73. Verse 23 to 37 seems to have one big theme, doesn't it?

  74. Which I think you can guess.

  75. And the devil, verse 3 and verse 9.

  76. It's there, isn't it?

  77. That's the theme.

  78. The climax of the baptism.

  79. You are my Son.

  80. The genealogy.

  81. It is concerned with what?

  82. Fatherhood?

  83. No, it's not concerned with fatherhood.

  84. It is all concerned with sonship.

  85. And it comes to conclusion with the great declaration,

  86. the Son of Adam, the Son of God.

  87. Jesus is the Son of Adam, the Son of God.

  88. And then as we move into chapter 4,

  89. where does the devil attack?

  90. His challenge is once again on the sonhood of Jesus.

  91. So in verse 3 and in verse 9.

  92. And it's been there right since, this theme has been there right since the beginning of Luke's Gospel.

  93. So it just came back to chapter 1, verse 35.

  94. The angel answered to Mary and said,

  95. The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.

  96. So the Holy One to be born will be called the Son of God.

  97. Now we should expect, shouldn't we, as we read Luke's Gospel,

  98. the connectedness.

  99. Because we know, don't we, as we've just seen from Luke 1,

  100. that Luke isn't writing randomly.

  101. He's not writing a memoir of just different memories.

  102. He is writing an orderly account.

  103. So if our passage is about the revelation of Jesus as the Son of God,

  104. what does it say about it?

  105. Now we're going to jump around a little bit, a lot more than we usually do.

  106. So tuck that piece of paper into Luke 3 as a bookmark.

  107. That is base camp, alright?

  108. My first point is this,

  109. Jesus is the unique Son of God.

  110. Jesus is the unique Son of God.

  111. How are we to understand the baptism of Jesus?

  112. Well, the best way to understand the baptism of Jesus

  113. is to let the Bible,

  114. and particularly let Luke himself,

  115. interpret it for us.

  116. We allow the Bible, don't we?

  117. The Bible is a self-interpreting book.

  118. It helps us.

  119. If it is God who is speaking,

  120. there is no higher authority for interpreting it.

  121. We must allow God to interpret his own words.

  122. Now how does Luke record the words of Jesus?

  123. And the apostles,

  124. so that we can understand this baptism?

  125. Accompanied, isn't it,

  126. by the visible descent of the Holy Spirit,

  127. and the audible voice of God the Father.

  128. So look at chapter 4 and verse 18.

  129. Jesus speaks himself.

  130. Jesus says,

  131. as he begins his public ministry,

  132. chapter 4 and verse 18,

  133. the Spirit of the Lord is on me.

  134. It's a reference back, isn't it?

  135. To the baptism.

  136. Because he has anointed me.

  137. And he goes on to describe his task.

  138. The baptism is an anointing for Jesus' work.

  139. Now let's go to Acts chapter 10.

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  140. Right?

  141. Acts chapter 10,

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  142. which is on page 1104.

  143. Page 1104.

  144. Let's hear the sound of leaves rustling.

  145. Alright?

  146. Acts chapter 10,

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  147. and verse 37 and 38.

  148. Peter is speaking.

  149. And he's preaching after the first Gentiles have believed the gospel.

  150. And this is what he says.

  151. He says,

  152. You know what has happened throughout Judea,

  153. beginning in Galilee,

  154. after the baptism that John preached.

  155. How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power.

  156. So Luke,

  157. in both volumes,

  158. he wrote Acts,

  159. records Jesus and Peter saying about the reception of the Spirit at his baptism,

  160. it is about an anointing.

  161. So the question is,

  162. what kind of anointing is it?

  163. And the answer lies in Luke chapter 3,

    Luke 3:22

  164. verse 22.

  165. You are my son,

  166. whom I love.

  167. With you I am well pleased.

  168. Now we've become youth to this in Luke's gospel as we've read it.

  169. But what Luke does is really interesting.

  170. He doesn't quote in full and exactly passages from the Old Testament.

  171. But he echoes.

  172. He echoes in order to set up lots of connections.

  173. So as we read Luke's gospel,

  174. we think,

  175. that reminds me,

  176. that echoes,

  177. that echoes.

  178. Always follow those trains of thought if you can.

  179. Alright?

  180. There are two main connections,

  181. two main echoes here.

  182. So the first is in Psalm 2.

  183. Okay?

  184. Let's go there.

  185. Psalm 2.

  186. Which is on page 543.

  187. Page 543.

  188. What happens in Psalm 2?

  189. I hope you know it.

  190. The earthly rulers,

  191. they get together and they plan

  192. and they conspire against God,

  193. against the Lord.

  194. And against who else?

  195. The Son.

  196. The Anointed One.

  197. And in verse 6 of Psalm 2,

  198. God has installed this king,

  199. his son,

  200. on Zion,

  201. my holy hill.

  202. And God addresses,

  203. he speaks to this king,

  204. in verse 7.

  205. And he says to them,

  206. he says to him,

  207. he said to me,

  208. you are my son.

  209. Today I have become your father.

  210. And again in verse 12,

  211. this king,

  212. this anointed king,

  213. is described as God's son.

  214. And it makes total sense

  215. against the background

  216. of the Old Testament.

  217. Where God's king

  218. is anointed as a prophet

  219. to speak the words of God.

  220. And he receives the Holy Spirit

  221. to do his job.

  222. So let's go further back.

  223. Let's go back to 1 Samuel,

    1 Samuel 16 chapter mention

  224. chapter 16.

  225. 1 Samuel,

    1 Samuel 16 chapter mention

  226. chapter 16.

  227. When I get there,

  228. I'll tell you the page number.

  229. It's page 287.

  230. Page 287.

  231. 1 Samuel,

    1 Samuel 16 chapter mention

  232. chapter 16,

  233. and verse 13.

  234. Samuel is anointing

  235. king David.

  236. So Samuel took the horn of oil,

  237. his horn containing oil,

  238. and anointed him,

  239. poured it upon him,

  240. in the presence of his brothers.

  241. And from that day on,

  242. the Spirit of the Lord

  243. came upon David

  244. in power.

  245. So back to Luke chapter 3.

    Luke 3 chapter mention

  246. Can you see the same pattern?

  247. John

  248. baptises Jesus,

  249. who receives the Spirit,

  250. and is called God's son.

  251. So the baptism of Jesus

  252. is a coronation ceremony.

  253. The anointing ceremony.

  254. The baptism of Jesus

  255. is where he is publicly anointed

  256. as God's ruler

  257. and king.

  258. Now let's deal with the other echo.

  259. Okay?

  260. Maybe it's not such a clear echo to you,

  261. but it's there.

  262. It's in Isaiah chapter 42,

    Isaiah 42 chapter mention

  263. and verse 1.

  264. Okay?

  265. Isaiah chapter 42,

    Isaiah 42 chapter mention

  266. and verse 1.

  267. Which is on page 727.

  268. Maybe you're thinking,

  269. I don't know my way around

  270. the Bible very well.

  271. Now is a great time to start,

  272. isn't it?

  273. Alright?

  274. They can teach you the song

  275. in Club 16.

  276. Isaiah 42,

  277. and verse 1.

  278. It's on page 727.

  279. And the prophet Isaiah

  280. begins to speak

  281. about his servant.

  282. And these chapters

  283. unfold what it's going to mean

  284. for the servant of the Lord.

  285. And he reveals

  286. that he will be the one

  287. who will suffer

  288. and die in the place

  289. of God's people.

  290. And the New Testament

  291. is very, very clear

  292. that the suffering servant

  293. is Jesus of Nazareth.

  294. And so the prophet Isaiah,

  295. speaking on behalf of God,

  296. said,

  297. Here is my servant

  298. whom I behold,

  299. my chosen one

  300. in whom I delight.

  301. I will put my spirit

  302. on him.

  303. And he will bring justice

  304. to the nations.

  305. Can you hear the echoes?

  306. You are my son

  307. whom I love.

  308. With you I'm well pleased.

  309. God's king, Jesus,

  310. is also his servant

  311. who will ultimately

  312. suffer for the salvation

  313. of his people.

  314. And God has put

  315. his spirit upon him.

  316. Luke 3

  317. is all about

  318. Jesus

  319. as God's suffering

  320. servant king.

  321. Now,

  322. if you were here

  323. last week,

  324. you may remember

  325. John's task for Jesus.

  326. So let's just go back

  327. to that in Luke 3.

  328. And in verse 17 to 18,

  329. there's that great passage

  330. of what Jesus will do.

  331. His winnowing fork,

  332. that fork is in his hand

  333. to clear his threshing floor

  334. and to gather the wheat

  335. into his barn.

  336. But he will burn up

  337. the chaff

  338. with unquenchable fire.

  339. He's going to sort out

  340. who are his

  341. and who are not.

  342. And with many

  343. other words,

  344. John exhorted the people

  345. and preached the good news

  346. to them.

  347. Although verse 17

  348. doesn't sound like

  349. good news to us.

  350. But Jesus is saying,

  351. Luke is saying,

  352. how can he be the one

  353. who separates the wheat

  354. from the chaff?

  355. How can he be the one

  356. who delivers God's people?

  357. And baptizes them

  358. with the Holy Spirit.

  359. And yet,

  360. on the other hand,

  361. judges those who refuse

  362. to come to him.

  363. And he consigns them

  364. to everlasting fire.

  365. Who is Jesus?

  366. How can anybody on earth

  367. have claimed

  368. to have that kind of right?

  369. Well,

  370. you've got to understand

  371. his identity,

  372. haven't you?

  373. Verses 17 and 18

  374. set up the end

  375. of chapter 3

  376. and the start of chapter 4.

  377. I searched for an illustration

  378. for this,

  379. but I really struggle

  380. with it.

  381. The only illustration

  382. I can give you,

  383. I was at

  384. Cardiff Amherst Park

  385. once before the

  386. Millennium Stadium

  387. watching the Army

  388. seconds play the Navy

  389. or something ridiculous

  390. like that.

  391. I don't know why I was,

  392. I can't remember

  393. why I was there.

  394. But I was watching this game,

  395. it's quite a good game,

  396. it was one of those games

  397. where you really

  398. couldn't care less

  399. who won,

  400. you tried to work out

  401. how many friends

  402. you've got in the Army

  403. or the Navy.

  404. But there was,

  405. at one point,

  406. a streaker

  407. who ran on the pitch.

  408. There were only

  409. about 300 people there,

  410. but the military police

  411. were there.

  412. I was thinking,

  413. what on earth

  414. are the military police

  415. doing at Cardiff Amherst Park

  416. in a rugby game?

  417. And the military police

  418. ran on the pitch,

  419. tackled him

  420. like they should,

  421. quite roughly,

  422. and man-armed him

  423. off the pitch.

  424. Anyway,

  425. what were the military police

  426. doing at Cardiff Amherst Park?

  427. Surely the military police,

  428. their domain

  429. is only

  430. on a military base,

  431. isn't it?

  432. Well,

  433. that's what I thought.

  434. But the person

  435. saying next to me

  436. told me that,

  437. bizarrely,

  438. they could police

  439. rugby matches

  440. played by the Army

  441. and Navy.

  442. You see,

  443. it's a rubbish illustration,

  444. really,

  445. but what it's saying to you

  446. is it's saying

  447. the domain of their authority

  448. was far greater

  449. than I imagined.

  450. I thought they could

  451. only have authority

  452. on the Army base,

  453. but it turns out

  454. they can have authority

  455. where,

  456. I can't remember

  457. exactly where,

  458. but they could certainly

  459. have it on that rugby pitch.

  460. And that is Jesus.

  461. His authority

  462. is far,

  463. far greater

  464. than you and I think.

  465. The domain

  466. of His authority

  467. is far greater

  468. than you and I think.

  469. Their identity

  470. of those military policemen,

  471. it covered them

  472. to do the job

  473. in a far,

  474. far greater way

  475. than I thought.

  476. And this identity

  477. of Jesus

  478. as the unique

  479. Son of God

  480. equips him

  481. for this task

  482. of baptising

  483. the faithful

  484. with the Holy Spirit

  485. and baptising

  486. the unfaithful

  487. with fire.

  488. He has authority

  489. as God's Son

  490. to do it.

  491. He is the final ruler

  492. of heaven and earth

  493. and He has the ability

  494. as the suffering servant

  495. to deliver His people

  496. from the unquenchable

  497. fires of judgment

  498. to the fire

  499. that will never end.

  500. And in being baptised

  501. He demonstrates

  502. His commitment

  503. to God's purpose.

  504. So it's saying to you

  505. trust Jesus.

  506. Trust Jesus

  507. because He is

  508. thoroughly equipped

  509. for spirit

  510. and fire

  511. baptism.

  512. You've got no reason

  513. to doubt Him

  514. this morning.

  515. If He is God's

  516. unique Son

  517. He can do

  518. all that He's asked

  519. to do.

  520. He can rule

  521. the nations.

  522. He can sift

  523. the wheat

  524. from the chaff.

  525. But equally

  526. do not pass Him

  527. off lightly.

  528. Don't pass Him

  529. off as a naive

  530. teacher of the

  531. pre-modern age.

  532. Luke tells us

  533. Jesus is the

  534. unique Son

  535. of God

  536. who has come

  537. to rule

  538. His rightful

  539. domain.

  540. But Luke

  541. wants us to know

  542. more about the

  543. nature of the

  544. Son of God.

  545. So secondly

  546. let's look at the

  547. second part of our

  548. passage and see

  549. that Jesus is the

  550. obedient Son of God.

  551. Verse 23

  552. to chapter 4

  553. verse 13.

  554. Jesus is the

  555. obedient Son

  556. of God.

  557. Now we've seen

  558. echoes of this

  559. already before in

  560. Luke.

  561. It's exciting.

  562. The genealogy

  563. it's not an

  564. appendix is it?

  565. That you either

  566. ignore or you

  567. remove.

  568. The genealogy is

  569. absolutely crucial

  570. to God's purposes.

  571. Genealogies in the

  572. Bible do not

  573. function as

  574. precise family

  575. trees.

  576. So as you look

  577. at the genealogies

  578. in Matthew and

  579. Luke and other

  580. places they are

  581. chopped and

  582. arranged to make

  583. particular points.

  584. So let's just

  585. imagine for a

  586. moment that I

  587. was going to

  588. try and establish

  589. the purity of

  590. the Welsh line

  591. in my blood.

  592. I'm from Wales

  593. but let's try and

  594. imagine we were

  595. going to establish

  596. the purity of

  597. the Welsh line

  598. in my blood.

  599. Well if we were

  600. going to write a

  601. genealogy of that

  602. and draw up a

  603. big family tree

  604. there are certain

  605. things that would

  606. have to go

  607. wouldn't there?

  608. My father is

  609. English and so

  610. Jewish and so

  611. that whole family

  612. line would have

  613. to go.

  614. Let's say my

  615. great grandfather

  616. was married three

  617. times.

  618. Well you would

  619. choose wouldn't

  620. you the wife

  621. that best preserves

  622. the Welsh blood

  623. and excludes the

  624. other two.

  625. My mother tells

  626. me that there is

  627. a distant relative

  628. on her side who

  629. was born in

  630. Monmouth which

  631. isn't really Wales

  632. at all and so

  633. we'd get rid of

  634. him.

  635. We'd exclude him.

  636. The point is

  637. not precision

  638. but to establish

  639. the point you're

  640. after.

  641. Now Luke is

  642. precise in this

  643. genealogy he

  644. gives us but

  645. that isn't what

  646. we should be

  647. reading him for.

  648. When you come

  649. to genealogies

  650. you've got to

  651. think what is

  652. the point that's

  653. being taught

  654. here.

  655. So here it's

  656. obvious isn't

  657. it?

  658. It's got a

  659. climax.

  660. Verse 38.

  661. Can you see

  662. it?

  663. The son of

  664. Seth.

  665. The son of

  666. Adam.

  667. The son of

  668. God.

  669. Who is

  670. Jesus?

  671. Draw the

  672. family tree.

  673. Follow the

  674. line.

  675. He is the

  676. son of

  677. Adam.

  678. The son of

  679. God.

  680. Now how

  681. can that

  682. be?

  683. Well the

  684. account of

  685. his temptation

  686. explains what

  687. Luke is up

  688. to.

  689. And to

  690. understand it

  691. we've got to

  692. plunge right back

  693. into the Old

  694. Testament.

  695. So this is the

  696. most exciting

  697. part of the

  698. sermon.

  699. Let's go back

  700. into the Old

  701. Testament.

  702. Let's go to

  703. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  704. 2.

  705. The thumb in

  706. Luke 3.

  707. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  708. 2.

  709. Now you know

  710. this.

  711. Genesis 2

    Genesis 2:16

  712. verses 16

  713. and 17.

  714. They're in the

  715. garden aren't

  716. they?

  717. And what

  718. happens?

  719. God puts

  720. Adam on

  721. probation.

  722. Call it

  723. a covenant

  724. of works.

  725. God puts

  726. Adam on

  727. probation.

  728. And in

  729. chapter 2

  730. verse 16

  731. he says

  732. Adam you are

  733. free to

  734. eat from

  735. any tree

  736. in the

  737. garden.

  738. But you

  739. must not

  740. eat from

  741. the tree

  742. of the

  743. knowledge

  744. of good

  745. and evil

  746. for when

  747. you eat

  748. of it

  749. you will

  750. surely

  751. die.

  752. Looks like

  753. the three

  754. comes along

  755. doesn't it?

  756. And we

  757. know what

  758. happens.

  759. The devil

  760. comes in

  761. the form

  762. of a

  763. serpent

  764. and he

  765. tempts

  766. Adam

  767. and Eve

  768. and they

  769. give in.

  770. And Adam

  771. and Eve

  772. choose to

  773. disobey

  774. God.

  775. And God

  776. curses them

  777. and he

  778. exiles them

  779. from the

  780. garden and

  781. his presence.

  782. And so

  783. Luke

  784. Luke wants

  785. to present

  786. Jesus as

  787. another Adam.

  788. Another

  789. son of God

  790. who will be

  791. tempted by

  792. the devil.

  793. And he won't

  794. be tempted in

  795. the garden of

  796. Eden where

  797. everything was

  798. going for him.

  799. Where everything

  800. spoke to him

  801. about the

  802. goodness of

  803. God.

  804. Where everything

  805. pointed him

  806. to keep being

  807. obedient because

  808. of the perfect

  809. environment that

  810. God has provided

  811. you.

  812. No, he is

  813. tempted in

  814. the wilderness.

  815. And yet he

  816. doesn't

  817. disobey.

  818. He doesn't

  819. give in.

  820. He is the

  821. son of God

  822. isn't he?

  823. Like Adam

  824. who was

  825. tempted by

  826. the devil but

  827. this time

  828. he was

  829. obedient.

  830. Can you see

  831. how major

  832. the issue

  833. is in

  834. chapter 4?

  835. The whole

  836. of human

  837. history hangs

  838. on this

  839. encounter.

  840. But as we

  841. come to

  842. chapter 4 we

  843. discover another

  844. dimension.

  845. To Luke

  846. the count.

  847. There's

  848. echoes out

  849. there.

  850. Echoes,

  851. echoes,

  852. echoes.

  853. So the

  854. experience of

  855. Jesus is

  856. deliberately

  857. described in

  858. terms that

  859. would remind

  860. them of

  861. Adam but

  862. even more

  863. so would

  864. remind them

  865. of Israel's

  866. experience.

  867. So Jesus

  868. finds himself

  869. in the

  870. desert near

  871. the Jordan.

  872. Ring any

  873. bells?

  874. And the

  875. number 40

  876. is used.

  877. Ring any

  878. bells?

  879. It's used to

  880. evoke in

  881. verse 2

  882. memories of

  883. Israel's 40

  884. years in

  885. the wilderness.

  886. And also

  887. when Jesus

  888. speaks to

  889. the devil

  890. of course

  891. he's speaking

  892. the Bible

  893. but where

  894. in the

  895. Bible?

  896. Deuteronomy

  897. 6-8.

  898. So look with

  899. me at

  900. verses 3

  901. and 4

  902. of chapter

  903. 4.

  904. What is

  905. going on?

  906. If I

  907. spoke to

  908. you

  909. if I

  910. said to

  911. you this

  912. morning

  913. in a

  914. Scottish

  915. accent

  916. there's

  917. been a

  918. murder

  919. there's

  920. been a

  921. murder

  922. what would

  923. that remind

  924. you of?

  925. Anybody

  926. tell me?

  927. Taggart

  928. isn't it?

  929. Alex

  930. Ferguson

  931. No,

  932. Taggart

  933. isn't it?

  934. If I

  935. spoke to

  936. you in

  937. Elizabeth

  938. Beethan

  939. English

  940. and I

  941. started

  942. mentioning

  943. daggers

  944. and ghosts

  945. and blood

  946. and Scotland

  947. I would

  948. be alluding

  949. to Macbeth.

  950. We do

  951. that don't

  952. we?

  953. People do

  954. that in

  955. comedy shows

  956. or in

  957. films.

  958. They allude

  959. to something

  960. by the way

  961. that they

  962. speak.

  963. If I

  964. was

  965. putting on

  966. an

  967. American

  968. accent

  969. and I

  970. had a

  971. big brown

  972. overcoat

  973. and I

  974. said

  975. just one

  976. more thing.

  977. Who would

  978. I be

  979. alluding

  980. to?

  981. Columbo.

  982. If I

  983. could think

  984. of any

  985. more

  986. international

  987. applications

  988. I would

  989. be speaking

  990. of

  991. and that

  992. is what

  993. is happening

  994. here.

  995. The

  996. illusions

  997. of chapter

  998. 4 drive

  999. us back

  1000. to Deuteronomy

  1001. 6-8.

  1002. How do we

  1003. understand the

  1004. temptation of

  1005. the Son of

  1006. God to

  1007. turn the

  1008. stone into

  1009. bread?

  1010. Is

  1011. Satan

  1012. hitting a

  1013. hungry man

  1014. where it

  1015. hurts?

  1016. Well let's

  1017. go to the

  1018. Old Testament

  1019. and let's

  1020. go to Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  1021. chapter 8.

  1022. I think this

  1023. is the last

  1024. one.

  1025. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  1026. chapter 8.

  1027. It's on

  1028. page 187.

  1029. And Moses

  1030. says to the

  1031. people,

  1032. I read from

  1033. verse 2,

  1034. Moses says to

  1035. the people,

  1036. page 187,

  1037. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  1038. chapter 8,

  1039. remember how

  1040. the Lord your

  1041. God led you

  1042. all the way

  1043. in the desert

  1044. these 40

  1045. years to

  1046. humble you

  1047. and to

  1048. test you

  1049. in order to

  1050. know what

  1051. was in your

  1052. heart.

  1053. whether or

  1054. not you

  1055. would keep

  1056. his commands.

  1057. He humbled

  1058. you causing

  1059. you to

  1060. hunger and

  1061. feeding you

  1062. with manna

  1063. which neither

  1064. you or your

  1065. fathers have

  1066. known to

  1067. teach you

  1068. that man

  1069. does not

  1070. live on

  1071. bread alone

  1072. but every

  1073. word that

  1074. comes from

  1075. the mouth

  1076. of God.

  1077. Your clothes

  1078. did not wear

  1079. out and your

  1080. feet did not

  1081. swell during

  1082. those 40

  1083. years.

  1084. Know then in

  1085. your heart

  1086. that as a

  1087. man disciplines

  1088. his son so

  1089. the Lord your

  1090. God disciplines

  1091. you.

  1092. What's

  1093. happening in

  1094. chapter 4

  1095. of Luke 4?

  1096. In the Old

  1097. Testament God

  1098. made his

  1099. people hungry

  1100. to test

  1101. them and to

  1102. teach them

  1103. that they

  1104. should depend

  1105. on God's

  1106. word as he

  1107. calls them

  1108. once again

  1109. as his son.

  1110. So the devil

  1111. attacks Jesus

  1112. the son of

  1113. God.

  1114. It is an

  1115. attack on his

  1116. obedience and

  1117. his trust in

  1118. God.

  1119. So when Satan

  1120. asks Jesus to

  1121. worship him

  1122. in verse 7

  1123. and he tests

  1124. God in

  1125. verse 9

  1126. Jesus responds

  1127. with an answer

  1128. from Deuteronomy

  1129. 6 to 9.

  1130. He responds

  1131. with an answer

  1132. that a faithful

  1133. Israelite would

  1134. have given

  1135. in those days.

  1136. We know

  1137. don't we?

  1138. We know the

  1139. tragic story of

  1140. Israel in the

  1141. Old Testament.

  1142. We know

  1143. tragically that

  1144. Israel desired

  1145. bread more

  1146. than they

  1147. desired God's

  1148. word.

  1149. They worship

  1150. other gods

  1151. than the true

  1152. God and they

  1153. constantly test

  1154. him.

  1155. And we know

  1156. that we do

  1157. that too.

  1158. Israel

  1159. failed

  1160. God's

  1161. test.

  1162. Israel just

  1163. like Adam

  1164. failed

  1165. God's

  1166. test.

  1167. And they

  1168. experienced

  1169. God's curse

  1170. and exile.

  1171. But all of us

  1172. have experienced

  1173. that too.

  1174. And so John

  1175. the Baptist

  1176. at the beginning

  1177. of Luke's

  1178. gospel in

  1179. chapter 3

  1180. which we

  1181. looked at

  1182. last week

  1183. quotes the

  1184. prophet Isaiah

  1185. to say

  1186. that Jesus

  1187. now comes

  1188. to deliver

  1189. his people

  1190. from exile.

  1191. Jesus

  1192. Luke wants

  1193. you and I

  1194. to know

  1195. is the

  1196. second Adam

  1197. or the

  1198. last Adam.

  1199. Jesus is

  1200. the true

  1201. Israel.

  1202. Jesus is

  1203. the true

  1204. son of God.

  1205. And when

  1206. he is

  1207. tested

  1208. he triumphs

  1209. through

  1210. obedience.

  1211. Adam was

  1212. tested and

  1213. failed.

  1214. Israel was

  1215. tested and

  1216. failed.

  1217. Jesus was

  1218. tested and

  1219. succeeds.

  1220. In verse

  1221. 30 of

  1222. chapter 4

  1223. in Luke's

  1224. gospel when

  1225. the devil had

  1226. finished all

  1227. this tempting

  1228. he left him

  1229. until an

  1230. opportune

  1231. time.

  1232. He succeeds.

  1233. And that

  1234. brings you and

  1235. I enormous

  1236. comfort this

  1237. morning.

  1238. If we

  1239. trust in

  1240. Jesus.

  1241. If we're

  1242. believers.

  1243. Because you

  1244. and I are

  1245. very much

  1246. aware of

  1247. our sin

  1248. and our

  1249. failure

  1250. aren't

  1251. we?

  1252. Before

  1253. God.

  1254. And we

  1255. face

  1256. temptation

  1257. to sin

  1258. and we

  1259. give in.

  1260. And maybe

  1261. this morning

  1262. you are

  1263. weary of

  1264. giving in

  1265. to temptation.

  1266. And you're

  1267. wondering is

  1268. it worth

  1269. to continue

  1270. struggling

  1271. on?

  1272. Now let

  1273. me ask

  1274. you what

  1275. is your

  1276. security

  1277. when you

  1278. fall

  1279. prey to

  1280. temptation?

  1281. Do you

  1282. do

  1283. whether

  1284. you

  1285. want

  1286. to

  1287. admit

  1288. it

  1289. or

  1290. not?

  1291. What is

  1292. your

  1293. security

  1294. then?

  1295. What do

  1296. you do?

  1297. It's a great

  1298. test of our

  1299. Christianity and

  1300. our Christian

  1301. war.

  1302. What do

  1303. you do

  1304. when you

  1305. fall into

  1306. sin?

  1307. Do we

  1308. resolve not

  1309. to do it

  1310. again?

  1311. You think

  1312. I was

  1313. tired.

  1314. Next time

  1315. when the

  1316. temptation

  1317. comes I'm

  1318. going to be

  1319. more alert.

  1320. And it

  1321. won't happen.

  1322. Well if

  1323. that's been

  1324. your strategy

  1325. so far

  1326. you know

  1327. as well

  1328. as I

  1329. do

  1330. the sense

  1331. of utter

  1332. despair

  1333. that when

  1334. you are

  1335. most alert

  1336. you still

  1337. give in

  1338. to certain

  1339. temptations.

  1340. And the

  1341. comfort which

  1342. Luke gives

  1343. to you and

  1344. I this

  1345. morning is

  1346. not to

  1347. develop some

  1348. kind of

  1349. technique

  1350. from chapter

  1351. four but

  1352. it is the

  1353. certainty that

  1354. Jesus the

  1355. unique son of

  1356. God is

  1357. also the

  1358. totally

  1359. obedient son

  1360. of God.

  1361. And we

  1362. trust him

  1363. in our

  1364. fight against

  1365. sin.

  1366. And far

  1367. from rushing

  1368. for the

  1369. latest

  1370. technique

  1371. we hide

  1372. in the

  1373. obedience

  1374. of Jesus.

  1375. And the

  1376. answer to

  1377. your struggle

  1378. with temptation

  1379. and my

  1380. struggle as we

  1381. struggle with

  1382. it with our

  1383. whole lives

  1384. is to

  1385. realise

  1386. just how

  1387. great

  1388. Jesus is.

  1389. That is the

  1390. answer.

  1391. And maybe

  1392. we've got a

  1393. very small

  1394. view of

  1395. Jesus.

  1396. And that

  1397. is why

  1398. we so

  1399. often go

  1400. back to

  1401. techniques

  1402. or our

  1403. own

  1404. resolve.

  1405. Hand-me-down

  1406. ways of

  1407. handling

  1408. temptation.

  1409. And the

  1410. answer is to

  1411. realise just

  1412. how great

  1413. Jesus is.

  1414. That he is

  1415. the unique

  1416. son of

  1417. God.

  1418. He is the

  1419. unique and

  1420. obedient son

  1421. of God.

  1422. And the

  1423. answer to a

  1424. great temptation

  1425. is a

  1426. great Jesus.

  1427. Jesus.

  1428. A great

  1429. Jesus who

  1430. has been

  1431. completely

  1432. obedient.

  1433. But if

  1434. that is

  1435. true for

  1436. those of

  1437. us this

  1438. morning who

  1439. call ourselves

  1440. Christians,

  1441. it's got to

  1442. be true for

  1443. those who

  1444. don't call

  1445. yourself a

  1446. Christian.

  1447. Maybe you're

  1448. listening and

  1449. you think,

  1450. well what has

  1451. this got to

  1452. do with me?

  1453. And you're

  1454. too aware that

  1455. you, well

  1456. you are very

  1457. aware, aren't

  1458. you?

  1459. You're aware

  1460. that you do

  1461. things that you

  1462. don't want to

  1463. do.

  1464. And you're

  1465. aware in your

  1466. life as we

  1467. all are that

  1468. you can't do

  1469. things that you

  1470. want to do.

  1471. And maybe

  1472. there's a sense

  1473. isn't there,

  1474. you've reached

  1475. that point in

  1476. your life where

  1477. there's a sense

  1478. of slavery

  1479. at work in

  1480. you.

  1481. Now how do

  1482. you deal

  1483. with that?

  1484. Well you

  1485. probably know

  1486. don't you by

  1487. now that you

  1488. cannot deal

  1489. with that

  1490. yourself.

  1491. You can go

  1492. to counselling

  1493. and go to

  1494. the shrimp

  1495. but that will

  1496. not deal

  1497. with it.

  1498. Here is

  1499. God's solution

  1500. in Luke's

  1501. Gospel and

  1502. it is more

  1503. amazing than

  1504. you can ever

  1505. imagine.

  1506. God's unique

  1507. son, his

  1508. anointed ruler

  1509. and suffering

  1510. servant comes

  1511. and he lives

  1512. a life of

  1513. perfect obedience

  1514. and he offers

  1515. that life to

  1516. God on your

  1517. behalf at the

  1518. end of the

  1519. Gospel.

  1520. And trust

  1521. him and you

  1522. can be certain

  1523. God will

  1524. forgive you.

  1525. And you will

  1526. not undergo

  1527. the baptism of

  1528. fire which is

  1529. promised in

  1530. verse 17 of

  1531. chapter 3 but

  1532. you will be

  1533. baptized with

  1534. the Holy

  1535. Spirit into

  1536. the very

  1537. life of

  1538. God which

  1539. he promises

  1540. to those who

  1541. trust him.

  1542. So the

  1543. small answer

  1544. at the end

  1545. of this

  1546. Bible chasing

  1547. that we've

  1548. done this

  1549. morning,

  1550. the small

  1551. message is

  1552. this,

  1553. trust

  1554. Jesus.

  1555. Trust

  1556. Jesus.

  1557. Jesus.

  1558. To every

  1559. single one

  1560. of us.

  1561. However you

  1562. would describe

  1563. your relationship

  1564. with God,

  1565. trust Jesus.

  1566. Because it is

  1567. only his

  1568. obedience

  1569. which is

  1570. adequate

  1571. to cover

  1572. your

  1573. disobedience.

  1574. obedience.

  1575. It is

  1576. only his

  1577. unique

  1578. son.

  1579. As the

  1580. unique

  1581. obedient

  1582. son of

  1583. God.

  1584. That alone

  1585. is adequate

  1586. to cover

  1587. you.

  1588. As you

  1589. find yourself

  1590. cursed and

  1591. exiled from

  1592. God outside

  1593. of him.

  1594. Because we

  1595. too like

  1596. Adam and

  1597. like Israel

  1598. have failed

  1599. the test.

  1600. Trust Jesus

  1601. and in

  1602. him know

  1603. the

  1604. certainty

  1605. of

  1606. forgiveness.

  1607. And in

  1608. Robin

  1609. Weeks

  1610. gives

  1611. this

  1612. illustration

  1613. Gresham

  1614. Meech

  1615. is the

  1616. great

  1617. theologian

  1618. in the

  1619. 1920s

  1620. started

  1621. Westminster

  1622. Salmonie.

  1623. He was

  1624. on his

  1625. deathbed

  1626. and he

  1627. telegrammed

  1628. his friend

  1629. and colleague

  1630. John Murray

  1631. and his

  1632. words were

  1633. the active

  1634. obedience

  1635. of Christ

  1636. no hope

  1637. without it.

  1638. There is

  1639. no hope

  1640. without the

  1641. active

  1642. obedience

  1643. of Christ.

  1644. Let's

  1645. go.
