  1. Well, Luke 13, verses 1-9.

    Luke 13:1–9

  2. Luke 13, verses 1-9.

    Luke 13:1–9

  3. And hypothetical questions are irrelevant, aren't they?

  4. ! But they can be great fun, hypothetical questions.

  5. !

  6. What if Hitler had defeated the Russians in 1941?

  7. What if I passed those exams back when I was 16?

  8. What if that girl had said yes instead of saying no?

  9. What if I got that job?

  10. What if, what if, what if?

  11. Mao Tse-tong was asked a what if question.

  12. What if somebody asked Mao,

  13. what if Khrushchev, the Russian leader,

  14. had been assassinated instead of President Kennedy?

  15. Mao, the Chinese leader, paused for a few moments,

  16. then he replied,

  17. well, I doubt if Aristotle and Arsist would have married Mrs. Khrushchev.

  18. It's as good as that.

  19. Other questions may be hypothetical, isn't it?

  20. But certain questions are dead earnest.

  21. They're deadly in earnest.

  22. There are lots of questions that people have about Christianity,

  23. but in every kind of evangelistic event I've ever done,

  24. I mean, every Christian explored course I've ever done,

  25. very near the top, if not at the top,

  26. is the question of God and suffering.

  27. God and suffering.

  28. And many people doubt that they can come to terms

  29. with the kind of God that we speak about,

  30. and the kind of God that we sing about,

  31. when they see the suffering that's in the world.

  32. It's a very real problem.

  33. It's a problem, isn't it, for us?

  34. If we want to believe in a loving, all-powerful God,

  35. and yet we live in the kind of world we do,

  36. with all the kind of suffering that we know exists,

  37. it's a problem.

  38. And I have not got all the answers.

  39. You wouldn't believe me if I said I did.

  40. I have just got one, I think, fascinating insight

  41. that Jesus gives us.

  42. Jesus touches on this subject in conversation.

  43. And in chapter 13, verse 1,

  44. it looks like, doesn't it,

  45. those around there have seen the news.

  46. They've read the internet of the latest massacre.

  47. They've been watching BBC or CNN,

  48. and they've seen the dead bodies,

  49. whom Pilate has done away with,

  50. and had their blood mingled with sacrifices.

  51. It's a foul thing.

  52. And they seem to be saying,

  53. well, what do you make of that, Jesus?

  54. For all we're told in verse 2,

  55. he answers them,

  56. and as he answers them,

  57. he gives us a fascinating glimpse.

  58. He gives us something of an insight

  59. into the whole issue of suffering.

  60. So, I've got three points.

  61. I want to look at Christ's question,

  62. Christ's answer,

  63. and then why you should listen to him.

  64. Christ's question.

  65. They ask him a question, don't they?

  66. Verse 1.

  67. Some person at that very time told him

  68. about the Galileans whose blood piled

  69. and mingled with their sacrifices.

  70. And he answers them with a question of his own.

  71. Look at verse 2.

  72. He answers them,

  73. do you think that these Galileans

  74. were worse sinners than all the other Galileans

  75. because they suffered in this way?

  76. And verse 4.

  77. All those 18 on whom the tower in Siloam fell

  78. and killed them,

  79. do you think that they were worse offenders

  80. than all the others who lived in Jerusalem?

  81. Christ's question echoes, does it?

  82. Very obviously the question that people ask.

  83. You see, when people are face to face

  84. with tragedy,

  85. the question that springs automatically

  86. to their lips is,

  87. why?

  88. Why?

  89. Why?

  90. Why?

  91. I think of a family I know.

  92. The two oldest daughters have committed suicide.

  93. The oldest son

  94. has had a brain tumour.

  95. There are three other children.

  96. One of the other children has attempted suicide.

  97. The boy has Asperger's.

  98. And what can you do

  99. when you go and sit with them?

  100. That family.

  101. What can you say?

  102. Let me tell you what you can say.

  103. You can say nothing.

  104. All you can do is sit there

  105. and have a cup of tea.

  106. And you sit.

  107. You listen.

  108. You read a bit of the Bible.

  109. You pray.

  110. And you feel your fish.

  111. Why now?

  112. Why here?

  113. Why me?

  114. And we don't think logically

  115. in those moments, do we?

  116. And we ask the question,

  117. why?

  118. We went on holiday to Kendall

  119. and as a person that managed the flats

  120. and that we live in,

  121. he's a very good friend of ours,

  122. his father went on holiday to Greece

  123. two weeks ago.

  124. He said goodbye to his sister,

  125. the father did,

  126. and he went for a day trip

  127. on a Greek island.

  128. He's not been seen since.

  129. You might have seen it.

  130. It's on the news.

  131. And nobody knows where he is.

  132. They've had scanning helicopters.

  133. This father, he seemed pretty normal.

  134. He's a normal Cumbrian man,

  135. full of humour.

  136. Why?

  137. Why?

  138. Why?

  139. Why?

  140. And I want to say to you,

  141. the Bible knows that question.

  142. In fact, the Bible knows that question

  143. so well,

  144. it devotes the whole book of the Bible to it,

  145. the book of Job.

  146. There are 42 chapters in that book,

  147. aren't there?

  148. Dealing with the question,

  149. why?

  150. And Jesus echoes it here.

  151. It's as if he knows it's on their mind.

  152. And he echoes the obvious question.

  153. He offers,

  154. as he asks his question,

  155. he offers the easy answer.

  156. Do you see that?

  157. Because it seems to be the only solution

  158. that can solve the problem.

  159. If you can link suffering,

  160. if you can link tragedies

  161. with sin and God's judgment,

  162. then perhaps I can live with

  163. an all-powerful, loving God.

  164. If suffering was only allowed in this world

  165. as a punishment directly for sin,

  166. well, I can just about cope with it.

  167. But it doesn't fit the evidence, does it?

  168. You know that.

  169. And that is why we keep asking the question,

  170. why?

  171. Why?

  172. How can you believe in a God

  173. who is so unfair?

  174. Part of the tragedies that we see all around us,

  175. it's not that the particularly sinful die,

  176. is it?

  177. It's not.

  178. The good suffer with the bad.

  179. Why him?

  180. Why her?

  181. Why that family?

  182. And the assumed premise

  183. for all those questions

  184. and all our statements

  185. is that the only solution

  186. to the problem

  187. could be if suffering was God's judgment.

  188. But if suffering

  189. is because of God's judgment

  190. always,

  191. God isn't actually a very accurate shot,

  192. is he?

  193. And Christ just seems to be floating

  194. that kite.

  195. Do you think that these Galileans

  196. were worse sinners

  197. than all the other Galileans

  198. because they suffered like this?

  199. Or those 18

  200. on whom the tower in Siloam

  201. fell and killed them?

  202. Do you think that they were worse offenders

  203. than all the others

  204. who lived in Jerusalem?

  205. And I want to say to you today,

  206. Jesus rejects the easy answer,

  207. wonderfully.

  208. He doesn't buy into it

  209. any more than you or I do.

  210. The Bible doesn't take that line.

  211. He could hardly be clearer.

  212. Could he?

  213. Look at verse 3,

  214. No, I tell you.

  215. Look at verse 5,

  216. No, I tell you.

  217. There are no easy,

  218. glib answers to suffering.

  219. We've got two different types of tragedies

  220. in this paragraph.

  221. Look at verse 1,

  222. you've got Herod's violence.

  223. It's an atrocity.

  224. It's a horrific thing

  225. when you think about it.

  226. And there is no denying

  227. is there human wickedness

  228. in many of the tragedies

  229. that we face.

  230. I think it's tough, isn't it,

  231. to put all the blame on God.

  232. That's what people do.

  233. When very often,

  234. much of the suffering we face

  235. is because of human wickedness.

  236. And that tower falling

  237. in verse 3,

  238. what's that like?

  239. It's like some air crash.

  240. It's like some earthquake.

  241. A tsunami.

  242. The floods.

  243. The famines.

  244. A car crash.

  245. It's very complex, isn't it?

  246. It's so complex

  247. that in the book on suffering

  248. that the Bible has written,

  249. two-thirds of the book of Job

  250. is full of the wrong answers.

  251. So whatever you do,

  252. don't give up.

  253. If you start,

  254. don't give up halfway.

  255. You're just ahead

  256. full of wrong answers.

  257. So those are Christ's questions.

  258. Let's look further

  259. because he doesn't just

  260. pose a question,

  261. he gives the answer to it.

  262. He goes on to give

  263. his own reply.

  264. So secondly,

  265. Christ answers,

  266. Were sinners,

  267. I tell you,

  268. no.

  269. Verse 3,

  270. No, I tell you,

  271. but unless you repent,

  272. you will all likewise perish.

  273. Were they worse offenders?

  274. Verse 5,

  275. No, I tell you,

  276. but unless you repent,

  277. you will all likewise perish.

  278. Now notice please,

  279. he doesn't try to explain away suffering.

  280. He doesn't try and explain it away.

  281. Jesus does not pretend

  282. that suffering does not exist.

  283. But rather strangely,

  284. Jesus' reply doesn't need

  285. to comfort you at all,

  286. does it?

  287. It's what a hard message.

  288. It does in other circumstances.

  289. There are other parts of the Bible

  290. that we could go to

  291. where there is great comfort.

  292. Jesus' reply doesn't need to pity.

  293. It leads to warning.

  294. You see,

  295. when we're face to face

  296. with tragedy,

  297. we want to scream out

  298. and we want to say

  299. something is wrong.

  300. Something is wrong.

  301. And Jesus says,

  302. He did right.

  303. Jesus agrees with you.

  304. Yes, there is something wrong.

  305. But Jesus says,

  306. it's closer to home

  307. than we imagine.

  308. Look at it again,

  309. verse 3,

  310. unless you repent,

  311. you will all likewise perish.

  312. Verse 5,

  313. unless you repent,

  314. you will all likewise perish.

  315. If we go for the easy answer,

  316. if we think suffering and tragedy

  317. are like God's laser beam bombing,

  318. God's kind of precision punishment,

  319. well, it leaves you and I

  320. so complacent,

  321. doesn't it?

  322. If suffering is just God's judgment,

  323. it's very easy to end up saying,

  324. well, actually,

  325. I'm alright, Jack,

  326. aren't I?

  327. But you see,

  328. when you ask Jesus

  329. about these tragedies

  330. and these sufferings

  331. that are taking place around him,

  332. he reverses that way of thinking.

  333. He picks a tragedy

  334. and Jesus gives a warning

  335. and the warning is,

  336. watch out, Jack.

  337. Not, I'm alright, Jack.

  338. Were these worse offenders?

  339. No.

  340. And unless you repent,

  341. you will all likewise perish.

  342. Now, what does he mean by that?

  343. Is he speaking that there is some faith

  344. that isn't limited

  345. to selected sinners,

  346. but it is universal.

  347. What does he mean by that?

  348. You will all likewise perish.

  349. But he doesn't really mean

  350. that Pilate's going to massacre

  351. all his hearers.

  352. The Romans are going to come

  353. and wipe them out.

  354. Well, Pilate can't do that

  355. because he'd need this

  356. huge sword

  357. as well as just a tower

  358. falling on them.

  359. He can't even actually mean

  360. that they will all die.

  361. He doesn't mean that, does he?

  362. Because he seems to imply

  363. if they repent,

  364. they will not perish.

  365. So he's not just talking about death.

  366. But repentance

  367. does not allow you

  368. to avoid death.

  369. So what does repentance

  370. allow you to avoid?

  371. Not death,

  372. but God's ultimate judgment.

  373. And repentance

  374. is always linked

  375. to my sin

  376. and my relationship

  377. with God.

  378. And these tragedies,

  379. they are not,

  380. they are not God's

  381. ultimate judgment

  382. on people.

  383. But they are consequences

  384. of living

  385. in a rebellious

  386. and a sinful world.

  387. these sufferings

  388. are vivid illustrations

  389. of God's coming

  390. judgment.

  391. God's coming judgment

  392. on those who will not

  393. turn around

  394. and will not turn back

  395. to him.

  396. And God's judgment

  397. is far more universal

  398. than just some highly

  399. selective group of sinners

  400. that suffer.

  401. unless you repent,

  402. you will all likewise

  403. perish.

  404. Let's try and put this

  405. in the context

  406. of Luke's gospel.

  407. Of all the gospels,

  408. Luke's mustn't just be

  409. treated as a pick and mix

  410. gospel.

  411. It's not a series

  412. of independent stories.

  413. Luke says,

  414. I wrote it

  415. and I've written down

  416. the incidents

  417. in a particular order

  418. so that you can know

  419. the truth most clearly.

  420. So go back to verse 54.

  421. In page 54,

  422. he's speaking to multitudes.

  423. He's speaking to crowds.

  424. And we automatically

  425. assume crowds are innocent.

  426. That's the starting point

  427. for us.

  428. Most people think

  429. they're innocent

  430. but Jesus says,

  431. no, they're not.

  432. He knows that the

  433. average person,

  434. indeed all of us,

  435. are guilty.

  436. We are all those

  437. who've rebelled against God.

  438. And he says to the multitude

  439. a number of things.

  440. Look at verse 54 to 56.

  441. He says,

  442. read the times.

  443. He said to the crowds,

  444. when you see a cloud

  445. rising in the west,

  446. you say at once,

  447. the showers coming.

  448. So it happens.

  449. When you see the south wind

  450. blowing,

  451. you say there will be

  452. scorching heat

  453. and it happens.

  454. You hypocrites.

  455. You hypocrites.

  456. You know how to interpret

  457. the appearance of earth and sky

  458. but why do you not know

  459. how to interpret

  460. the present time?

  461. Why don't you understand

  462. what is going on

  463. at the minute?

  464. That God

  465. has stepped into the world

  466. in the person of his son

  467. and you are rejecting him.

  468. And in verses 57 to 59,

  469. judge yourselves.

  470. Judge for yourselves.

  471. Use your common sense.

  472. Time is short.

  473. See the picture?

  474. Judgment is coming.

  475. Judgment has come.

  476. Time is short.

  477. So beg for mercy.

  478. Every one of us is guilty.

  479. So the only sensible thing to do

  480. is to throw yourselves

  481. on God's mercy.

  482. Those are the times

  483. you are living in,

  484. says Jesus.

  485. And he comes to our paragraph

  486. and he says,

  487. take the warnings.

  488. Take the warning.

  489. Do you think Jesus judges

  490. just especially wicked sinners?

  491. No.

  492. No.

  493. Those who

  494. the tower fell on them,

  495. they are facing their judge now.

  496. And how long will it be

  497. before you are face to face

  498. with your judge?

  499. So repent

  500. while you've got time.

  501. Turn around.

  502. Turn around from living

  503. your own way

  504. and turn to God

  505. and do it now.

  506. He tells you another parable

  507. in verses 6 to 9

  508. and it's all part of

  509. a series of stories.

  510. And the story really

  511. is don't presume.

  512. It's a little story

  513. of a man with a fig tree

  514. in his garden.

  515. He comes looking for fruit on it

  516. and he finds none.

  517. Now I am no gardener.

  518. I don't know anything

  519. about gardening.

  520. But you can see

  521. his frustration.

  522. Can't you?

  523. He said to the vine dress,

  524. how long have I got

  525. to put up with this fig tree?

  526. Let me pull it up.

  527. Let me stick in something else.

  528. And he answers,

  529. doesn't he?

  530. He says,

  531. no, let it alone, sir.

  532. Let it alone, sir.

  533. Until I dig around it

  534. and put on manure.

  535. Then if it should bear fruit

  536. next to you,

  537. well and good.

  538. If not,

  539. you can cut it down.

  540. You see,

  541. his hearers have not had

  542. any towers fall upon them.

  543. They've not been cut down

  544. in a massacre yet.

  545. But don't presume.

  546. Don't presume.

  547. Where's the sign

  548. that you're bearing

  549. the fruits

  550. that befit repentance?

  551. What are the signs

  552. of your repentance?

  553. That you're living

  554. a life towards God.

  555. Now of course,

  556. all of this has got

  557. very particular reference

  558. to the people of Jerusalem

  559. in Jesus' day,

  560. isn't it?

  561. It may well be

  562. that they've had

  563. three years

  564. of his public ministry

  565. and within a year

  566. their final rejection

  567. of Jesus

  568. will be complete.

  569. They will lay him

  570. to a tree.

  571. And their predicted

  572. destruction

  573. will be sealed.

  574. But every tragedy

  575. that you and I

  576. read about,

  577. that you and I

  578. experience,

  579. is a reminder

  580. of the same warning.

  581. It's not that those

  582. who suffer

  583. are especially wicked.

  584. It is that we will

  585. all have to face

  586. God's judgment

  587. unless we repent.

  588. And that is why,

  589. let me say this to you,

  590. that is why

  591. a world of tragedies

  592. is a very fitting

  593. world for you

  594. and I to live in.

  595. If you're like me

  596. and all too many

  597. of you are,

  598. we are so selfish

  599. and rebellious

  600. that we need

  601. a world

  602. that won't let us

  603. think that it's okay.

  604. We need a world

  605. full of constant

  606. reminders

  607. that if there were

  608. no tragedies

  609. to bring us up short,

  610. if there were no

  611. deaths to bring us

  612. up short,

  613. we might think

  614. God doesn't care

  615. about sin.

  616. But God cares

  617. intensely

  618. about sin.

  619. He cares intensely

  620. about you.

  621. But unless

  622. you repent,

  623. you will all

  624. likewise

  625. perish.

  626. Somebody says,

  627. well,

  628. it's a bit of a

  629. sledgehammer

  630. and a crushing nut,

  631. isn't it,

  632. Jesus?

  633. It's a bit over

  634. the top.

  635. No,

  636. it's not.

  637. Because God's

  638. judgment that we

  639. look at tonight

  640. is a terrible,

  641. terrible thing.

  642. And I am so,

  643. I'm so anesthetized

  644. to my need.

  645. I'm so blandly

  646. indifferent

  647. that I need

  648. to be put in a

  649. world that sets

  650. my nerves

  651. jangling.

  652. That it sets

  653. my mind

  654. screaming,

  655. there is

  656. something wrong.

  657. There is

  658. something wrong.

  659. I need to be

  660. driven

  661. to turn

  662. from my sin

  663. because I

  664. don't do it

  665. and I won't

  666. do it

  667. naturally

  668. or easily.

  669. And it

  670. is mercy

  671. God will

  672. do anything

  673. to provoke

  674. me to do

  675. just that.

  676. It is a

  677. very blunt

  678. warning,

  679. isn't it?

  680. Unless you

  681. repent,

  682. you will

  683. all likewise

  684. perish.

  685. But it is

  686. born of

  687. mercy

  688. and of

  689. love.

  690. So we

  691. have Christ

  692. question

  693. and Christ

  694. answer.

  695. But I

  696. want to

  697. step back

  698. for a moment

  699. and I

  700. want you to

  701. see who

  702. delivered this

  703. warning.

  704. Who delivered

  705. this warning?

  706. Why should

  707. you listen to

  708. such a harsh

  709. message?

  710. Why should

  711. you listen to

  712. this person

  713. as he brings

  714. me a warning

  715. from tragedy

  716. and suffering?

  717. How dare

  718. he do that?

  719. But let me

  720. give you two

  721. reasons.

  722. Two reasons

  723. why you need

  724. to listen

  725. and why you

  726. should listen

  727. and why you

  728. should be

  729. glad to

  730. listen.

  731. The first

  732. reason is

  733. this,

  734. because the

  735. Jesus who

  736. is speaking

  737. here is on

  738. his way to

  739. Jerusalem.

  740. That's the

  741. section we're

  742. in in Luke's

  743. Gospel.

  744. He's in this

  745. vast narrative,

  746. Luke is,

  747. of telling you

  748. Jesus is on

  749. his way to

  750. the cross.

  751. He's on his

  752. way to the

  753. judgment of

  754. God.

  755. Most of Luke's

  756. Gospel is taken

  757. back with Jesus

  758. journeying to

  759. Jerusalem and

  760. Jerusalem is the

  761. place of death

  762. for him.

  763. The place of

  764. the cross.

  765. And what is

  766. the cross?

  767. The cross is

  768. the place of

  769. the most unjust

  770. suffering of

  771. all time.

  772. We talk,

  773. don't we,

  774. about innocent

  775. people being

  776. killed and

  777. suffering.

  778. But actually

  779. none of them

  780. are really

  781. innocent.

  782. none of us

  783. are truly

  784. innocent.

  785. And yet

  786. he was.

  787. He lived a

  788. pure life.

  789. He had

  790. pure lips.

  791. When they

  792. pulled Jesus'

  793. heart apart,

  794. that is literally

  795. what happened

  796. in crucifixion,

  797. they pull your

  798. heart apart at

  799. the cross.

  800. And what came

  801. out of Jesus'

  802. heart?

  803. Not selfishness,

  804. but love.

  805. There was no

  806. thought for

  807. himself for a

  808. moment.

  809. You can

  810. excuse it,

  811. can't you,

  812. at the cross

  813. in that

  814. immense agony.

  815. No thought

  816. for himself,

  817. but thought

  818. for others.

  819. His mother,

  820. behold your

  821. son, he

  822. said.

  823. John, look

  824. after her.

  825. Out of his

  826. heart, when they

  827. pulled it apart,

  828. came not bitterness,

  829. but forgiveness.

  830. Whether it was

  831. for the soldiers who

  832. were hammering the

  833. nails into his

  834. wrists, or perhaps

  835. more likely the

  836. Jewish religious

  837. establishment that

  838. had kind of

  839. finished their

  840. kangaroo court,

  841. Father, forgive

  842. them, they know

  843. not what they

  844. do.

  845. Yes, this

  846. appeal of

  847. Jesus, this

  848. answer from

  849. Jesus, is

  850. from somebody

  851. who knows

  852. first-hand

  853. unjust

  854. suffering.

  855. And that is

  856. why we must

  857. listen to him.

  858. John

  859. Stott writes

  860. in the cross

  861. of Christ,

  862. in the real

  863. world of pain,

  864. how could one

  865. worship a God

  866. who is immune

  867. to it.

  868. I have entered

  869. many Buddhist

  870. temples in

  871. different countries

  872. and stood

  873. respectfully before

  874. the statue of

  875. Buddha, his

  876. legs crossed,

  877. his arms folded,

  878. his eyes closed.

  879. There goes

  880. from a smile

  881. playing round

  882. his mouth, a

  883. remote look on

  884. his face, detached

  885. from the agonies

  886. of the world.

  887. But each time

  888. after a while,

  889. I have had to

  890. turn away, and

  891. in imagination I

  892. have turned

  893. instead to that

  894. lonely, twisted,

  895. tortured figure

  896. on the cross,

  897. nails through

  898. hand and feet,

  899. back lacerated,

  900. limbs wrenched,

  901. brow bleeding

  902. through thorn

  903. pricks, mouth

  904. dry and

  905. intolerably

  906. thirsty,

  907. plunged in

  908. God-forsaken

  909. darkness.

  910. That is the

  911. God for me.

  912. There's a

  913. well-known

  914. poem,

  915. Jesus of the

  916. scars,

  917. last verse,

  918. was like this,

  919. the other

  920. gods were

  921. strong,

  922. but thou

  923. was weak.

  924. They rode,

  925. but thou

  926. did stumble

  927. to a throne.

  928. But to

  929. our wounds,

  930. only God's

  931. wounds can

  932. speak,

  933. and not a

  934. God has

  935. wounds,

  936. but thou

  937. alone.

  938. The one

  939. who delivers

  940. the warning

  941. is the one

  942. who experienced

  943. suffering.

  944. the one

  945. who delivers

  946. the warning

  947. is the one

  948. who went

  949. to the

  950. cross,

  951. not to

  952. suffer just

  953. physically,

  954. but to

  955. take the

  956. judgment,

  957. the spiritual

  958. judgment,

  959. that we

  960. deserve.

  961. That is the

  962. one who

  963. warns.

  964. In his

  965. body he

  966. bore our

  967. sins on

  968. the tree,

  969. by his

  970. wounds you

  971. have been

  972. healed.

  973. Christ dies

  974. once for

  975. all,

  976. the righteous

  977. for the

  978. unrighteous,

  979. the just

  980. for the

  981. unjust,

  982. that he

  983. might bring

  984. us to

  985. God.

  986. Why

  987. listen?

  988. Because he

  989. knows.

  990. He suffered.

  991. And why

  992. listen?

  993. Secondly,

  994. because he's

  995. dealt with

  996. suffering.

  997. That Jesus'

  998. death has

  999. reversed the

  1000. effects of

  1001. our rebellion.

  1002. One writer

  1003. puts it like

  1004. this,

  1005. says this,

  1006. the leaves

  1007. of the

  1008. New Testament

  1009. rustle with

  1010. the promise

  1011. of a new

  1012. world.

  1013. Don't they?

  1014. The leaves

  1015. of the New

  1016. Testament,

  1017. they rustle

  1018. with the

  1019. promise of

  1020. a new

  1021. world.

  1022. A world

  1023. where in

  1024. righteousness

  1025. dwells.

  1026. A world

  1027. where there

  1028. will be

  1029. no sickness

  1030. or sorrow,

  1031. no pain,

  1032. no death.

  1033. A world

  1034. where all

  1035. these things

  1036. will be

  1037. sorted out.

  1038. And his

  1039. cross gives

  1040. me access

  1041. to that

  1042. world.

  1043. It's one of

  1044. those books

  1045. written from

  1046. the US,

  1047. they come out

  1048. occasionally,

  1049. it's written

  1050. by a

  1051. child,

  1052. the child

  1053. was severely

  1054. disabled,

  1055. he lived

  1056. to the age

  1057. of six,

  1058. six and

  1059. died.

  1060. It's not a

  1061. great book,

  1062. but it's a

  1063. wonderful title

  1064. and it picks

  1065. up the promise

  1066. of this new

  1067. world.

  1068. Where There

  1069. Won't Be

  1070. Any Disability.

  1071. The title is

  1072. something that

  1073. the little boy

  1074. had said

  1075. that stuck

  1076. with his

  1077. parents.

  1078. It's from

  1079. the 1970s,

  1080. I won't be

  1081. a cripple

  1082. when I see

  1083. Jesus.

  1084. When you

  1085. come face

  1086. to face

  1087. with suffering,

  1088. you've got

  1089. problems,

  1090. I've got

  1091. problems,

  1092. if you want

  1093. to believe

  1094. in an

  1095. all-powerful

  1096. loving God.

  1097. We can't

  1098. duck them,

  1099. but please

  1100. don't think

  1101. this morning

  1102. that if you

  1103. remove God,

  1104. you've come

  1105. to the end

  1106. of your

  1107. problems.

  1108. You haven't.

  1109. You've just

  1110. got a completely

  1111. different set.

  1112. You've got

  1113. the same world,

  1114. the same tragedies,

  1115. the same unjust

  1116. suffering,

  1117. but actually

  1118. you've got

  1119. no hope.

  1120. I'm not

  1121. asking you to

  1122. believe God

  1123. because wouldn't

  1124. it be nice if

  1125. it were true?

  1126. That's not a good

  1127. enough ground.

  1128. But don't

  1129. let's throw

  1130. God out of

  1131. the window

  1132. until we're

  1133. dead sure

  1134. he's not

  1135. true.

  1136. We've got

  1137. nothing to

  1138. lose.

  1139. We've got

  1140. nothing to

  1141. gain by

  1142. doing that,

  1143. I mean.

  1144. Why listen to

  1145. that Christ?

  1146. Well, he knows

  1147. what suffering

  1148. is like,

  1149. he's faced

  1150. it himself,

  1151. and he claims

  1152. to have dealt

  1153. with it.

  1154. I was reading

  1155. last night's

  1156. little book,

  1157. and in it it

  1158. talks about

  1159. finding God

  1160. is in the

  1161. darkness

  1162. little book,

  1163. Irene Howard

  1164. is written,

  1165. and she

  1166. tells the

  1167. story of

  1168. Pat Cardy.

  1169. She and her

  1170. husband were

  1171. living in

  1172. Northern Ireland

  1173. around 1980,

  1174. and their

  1175. nine-year-old

  1176. daughter Jennifer

  1177. went to play

  1178. with one of

  1179. her friends.

  1180. She started

  1181. riding her

  1182. bike over to

  1183. her friend's

  1184. house, and

  1185. they never

  1186. saw her

  1187. again.

  1188. They found

  1189. her body

  1190. about a week

  1191. later.

  1192. She'd been

  1193. murdered.

  1194. They did

  1195. not know

  1196. why,

  1197. they did

  1198. not know

  1199. who.

  1200. You can

  1201. imagine the

  1202. parents facing

  1203. that situation.

  1204. Pat Cardy

  1205. relates how

  1206. she was

  1207. given grace

  1208. to make

  1209. it through

  1210. Jennifer's

  1211. funeral.

  1212. But then

  1213. she talks

  1214. about the

  1215. following day

  1216. when she

  1217. did not

  1218. find any

  1219. of that

  1220. grace.

  1221. She tried

  1222. to busy

  1223. herself tidying

  1224. up and

  1225. cleaning,

  1226. but it

  1227. did not

  1228. work.

  1229. She tried

  1230. to give

  1231. in to tears

  1232. as she

  1233. saw and

  1234. touched

  1235. Jennifer's

  1236. belonging.

  1237. Finally,

  1238. she was in

  1239. the bathroom,

  1240. and there

  1241. again were

  1242. Jennifer's

  1243. own personal

  1244. items,

  1245. and the

  1246. awful finality

  1247. of death

  1248. for her.

  1249. She said

  1250. that once

  1251. the tears

  1252. started,

  1253. there was

  1254. no holding

  1255. back,

  1256. and the

  1257. violent,

  1258. suffocating

  1259. sobs kept

  1260. coming.

  1261. I would

  1262. never see

  1263. her again.

  1264. I wished

  1265. that I

  1266. too could

  1267. die.

  1268. She began

  1269. as best

  1270. as she

  1271. could to

  1272. call on

  1273. God for

  1274. help and

  1275. for sustaining

  1276. grace in

  1277. that time.

  1278. There

  1279. followed

  1280. another stream

  1281. of bitter

  1282. tears as

  1283. she picked

  1284. up her

  1285. copy of

  1286. Daily Light,

  1287. which was

  1288. there in

  1289. the bathroom.

  1290. She said,

  1291. I could read

  1292. nothing.

  1293. My tears

  1294. were unwipeable

  1295. as well as

  1296. unstoppable.

  1297. Twice I

  1298. tried to

  1299. read,

  1300. but I could

  1301. not.

  1302. The third

  1303. time I

  1304. read these

  1305. words more

  1306. clearly.

  1307. And God

  1308. shall wipe

  1309. away all

  1310. tears from

  1311. their eyes,

  1312. and there

  1313. shall be no

  1314. more death,

  1315. neither sorrow,

  1316. nor crying,

  1317. for the

  1318. former things

  1319. have passed

  1320. away.

  1321. Why

  1322. listen to

  1323. Jesus Christ

  1324. this morning?

  1325. Because he

  1326. knows what

  1327. suffering is.

  1328. He's

  1329. faced it

  1330. himself and

  1331. he claims

  1332. to have

  1333. dealt with

  1334. it.

  1335. And he

  1336. offers to

  1337. lead you to

  1338. that world

  1339. where suffering

  1340. will be

  1341. removed.

  1342. He's

  1343. taken the

  1344. initiative,

  1345. isn't it?

  1346. It's an

  1347. amazing gesture

  1348. of love.

  1349. And he

  1350. says,

  1351. I love

  1352. you.

  1353. He

  1354. says,

  1355. stop the

  1356. war.

  1357. Stop the

  1358. war against

  1359. me.

  1360. Stop living

  1361. your life

  1362. your way

  1363. and turn

  1364. to me

  1365. and repent.

  1366. They

  1367. face him

  1368. with a

  1369. tragedy,

  1370. the latest

  1371. tragedy.

  1372. And as

  1373. he replies,

  1374. he makes

  1375. it clear,

  1376. the tragedies

  1377. are not

  1378. just meant

  1379. to leave

  1380. me pitying

  1381. the sufferers

  1382. only,

  1383. but they

  1384. are meant

  1385. to leave

  1386. me listening

  1387. to the

  1388. warning.

  1389. to live

  1390. on myself

  1391. without

  1392. repenting

  1393. is simply

  1394. to live

  1395. on borrowed

  1396. time.

  1397. And he

  1398. answered them,

  1399. do you

  1400. think that

  1401. these Galileans

  1402. are worse

  1403. sinners than

  1404. all the

  1405. other Galileans

  1406. because they

  1407. suffered in

  1408. this way?

  1409. No,

  1410. I tell you,

  1411. but unless

  1412. you repent,

  1413. you will

  1414. all likewise

  1415. perish.

  1416. Please do

  1417. not walk

  1418. out of

  1419. these doors

  1420. and ignore

  1421. the warning.

  1422. Come

  1423. again,

  1424. speak to

  1425. me,

  1426. call to

  1427. God.

  1428. I'm very

  1429. aware this

  1430. morning that

  1431. there are

  1432. lots of

  1433. questions about

  1434. suffering that

  1435. I've not

  1436. answered.

  1437. And the

  1438. topic is

  1439. very,

  1440. very painful.

  1441. I'd be

  1442. glad to

  1443. try and

  1444. share some

  1445. of the

  1446. Bible with

  1447. you.

  1448. I know

  1449. David Barnes

  1450. did an

  1451. excellent

  1452. seminar at

  1453. the church

  1454. weekend.

  1455. I'm sure

  1456. he would

  1457. talk to

  1458. you about

  1459. it.

  1460. We'll

  1461. be hovering

  1462. around.

  1463. There

  1464. was some

  1465. present and

  1466. they asked,

  1467. do you

  1468. think that

  1469. they were

  1470. worse

  1471. sinners,

  1472. those

  1473. people in

  1474. Nairobi,

  1475. the latest

  1476. victims in

  1477. our city,

  1478. those who

  1479. died in

  1480. Nigeria?

  1481. No, of

  1482. course not.

  1483. But unless

  1484. you repent,

  1485. you will

  1486. all likewise

  1487. perish.

  1488. Let's pray.
