  1. Well, I want us to look at Luke 30 verses 10-17.

  2. And I suppose the question that I've been asking myself this week,

  3. ! What is the biggest barrier in my Christian life?

  4. ! What's the biggest barrier to my growth?

  5. What's the biggest barrier to my witness?

  6. In speaking to people that I love?

  7. Speaking to people who are my friends,

  8. some people who are in my family.

  9. What's the biggest barrier I have to kind of living the gospel out before them

  10. and speaking to them about the gospel?

  11. Many people think it's an issue of confidence.

  12. Confidence in knowing the message.

  13. I don't think that.

  14. I expect most of you here today, not all of you, but most of you,

  15. have been Christians long enough that you can simply explain

  16. the good news of the Lord Jesus in your own words.

  17. You can do that.

  18. You can say what he's done.

  19. You can say that he died for me.

  20. And for most of us, that is not the issue.

  21. We can explain it.

  22. I have found the biggest barrier in my Christian life is my character.

  23. It's my character.

  24. But what has happened to us as Christians?

  25. God has called us, hasn't he, to be his children.

  26. He's called us to be in Christ.

  27. He's called us to declare his praises to the world around us.

  28. To show his unconditional, unchangeable, faithful love to the people I live amongst.

  29. And yet so often I find in my life, I don't know about yours,

  30. it is littered with examples of how I fail to do that.

  31. Sometimes it's the moment of madness, isn't it?

  32. Losing my rag.

  33. And blowing your top.

  34. And you do it in front of people.

  35. In front of family or friends or work colleagues that you've been praying for.

  36. And it's pretty embarrassing.

  37. But often it's not a moment of madness.

  38. Most of the time it's not, is it?

  39. But I don't know about you, but I look at my non-Christian friends

  40. and I often find that they are more loyal,

  41. they are more generous,

  42. and they seem more loving.

  43. And the main problem with my Christian life,

  44. and I suppose if you want to call it my evangelism,

  45. is my self-centred life.

  46. Now I think as we look at this section in Luke's Gospel,

  47. particularly as we go through chapter 13 over the next few weeks,

  48. we're going to see the Lord Jesus,

  49. who is wonderfully loving,

  50. and wonderfully other-person-centred,

  51. longing to bring people into his kingdom.

  52. And yet we're also going to see a dark side.

  53. We're going to see the religious hypocrites.

  54. And too often, as you read Luke 13,

  55. I find myself siding with them,

  56. and not with the Lord Jesus.

  57. Now the context of where we are,

  58. is we are in the longest section of Luke.

  59. And it started in chapter 9, verse 51.

  60. Can you see that?

  61. He sets off, resolutely,

  62. he set his face to go to Jerusalem.

  63. And it goes right away through to chapter 19,

  64. that's the section, the journey section.

  65. He's setting off, resolutely,

  66. to the place where he knows he's going to die.

  67. And it seems like suicidal madness.

  68. But we know, don't we, those of us who know Luke's Gospel,

  69. actually that is the heart of his mission.

  70. And the context of this journey,

  71. the context of him setting off to Jerusalem,

  72. he teaches his disciples what his kingdom,

  73. what it's going to be like to live under the reign of King Jesus.

  74. What it's going to be like to follow him down through the ages.

  75. It's a kingdom where people are accepted,

  76. as they accept Jesus as King.

  77. As people say that Jesus Christ is Lord,

  78. they come under his lordship,

  79. they take on his yoke.

  80. As they humbly repent of living for themselves,

  81. and they accept the forgiveness

  82. that Jesus unconditionally offers,

  83. they come into the kingdom.

  84. But it's also a kingdom

  85. that we've not yet fully experienced yet.

  86. Jesus is teaching us

  87. that there's going to be a perfection

  88. of the kingdom

  89. when he returns.

  90. The now and the not yet.

  91. We live in the now.

  92. We've just sung a bit, haven't we?

  93. Today is the Lord's day.

  94. It is the Sabbath rest.

  95. It is a picture of the rest of God

  96. in Genesis 1.

  97. It is a picture of the freedom,

  98. the rest that the people of Israel enjoyed in Exodus.

  99. It is a picture of the rest that we know in Christ.

  100. But we're not perfectly at rest, are we?

  101. We look forward, Hebrews 4,

  102. to the rest of God in eternity.

  103. We're not there yet.

  104. The kingdom has come.

  105. It is here.

  106. It is among us.

  107. And yet it is still to come.

  108. When he comes,

  109. he will come to judge the world.

  110. Look at verse 49 of chapter 12.

  111. He is the fire starter.

  112. And Jesus' teaching brings him into contact,

  113. conflict with the Jewish rulers of his day,

  114. the Bible experts,

  115. which is who the Pharisees were.

  116. They were the experts in the scriptures.

  117. The synagogue rulers,

  118. the pastors of the day,

  119. the elders.

  120. And you see with them,

  121. they don't see the need

  122. of an attitude of humble repentance.

  123. Because they think

  124. they are already

  125. on the right side of God.

  126. And as we go through this section,

  127. this chapter in the next few weeks,

  128. we're going to see

  129. that it's very easy for you and I

  130. to be self-righteous like them.

  131. Rather than humble like the Lord Jesus.

  132. So I want to do those two things this morning.

  133. I want to draw that contrast.

  134. First of all,

  135. I want us to see Jesus

  136. the compassionate freedom giver.

  137. Jesus the compassionate freedom giver.

  138. That's what Jesus is doing.

  139. Giving freedom.

  140. Look at verse 10.

  141. Of Luke 13.

  142. Now he was teaching

  143. in one of the synagogues

  144. on the Sabbath day.

  145. And behold,

  146. there was a woman

  147. who had had a disabling spirit

  148. for 18 years.

  149. She was bent over

  150. and could not

  151. straighten herself.

  152. The Sabbath was the day,

  153. of course,

  154. when people gathered to hear

  155. the Bible,

  156. the scriptures,

  157. taught

  158. and discussed them

  159. in the synagogue.

  160. And this woman

  161. had been coming week by week

  162. and she was doubled up

  163. in pain.

  164. We can think of people like that,

  165. can't we?

  166. We can think of people

  167. maybe in our family

  168. or on our street.

  169. They struggle to stand up

  170. and they struggle to sit down

  171. and their back bows,

  172. they're hunched over

  173. and their shoulders

  174. are permanently hunched.

  175. And it's painful

  176. getting up in the morning.

  177. It's painful getting dressed.

  178. It's painful to get down

  179. the stairs.

  180. It's painful to get

  181. the breakfast.

  182. It's painful to sit down

  183. on a seat.

  184. And that is with

  185. modern medicine,

  186. isn't it?

  187. That is with old people

  188. popping loads of pills.

  189. That's with modern medicine.

  190. I cannot imagine

  191. the agonies

  192. of this woman's life.

  193. It was John Chapman

  194. that used to say,

  195. growing old is the pits.

  196. And it is,

  197. isn't it?

  198. When you're really old

  199. and when you're struggling

  200. with health

  201. and when there's pain,

  202. here's the agony

  203. of this woman's life.

  204. But she's at the synagogue.

  205. And Luke tells us

  206. it is a spirit,

  207. a disabling spirit

  208. that is afflicting her.

  209. It's not a normal ailment.

  210. Look at verse 12.

  211. When Jesus saw her,

  212. he called her over

  213. and said to her,

  214. woman,

  215. you are free

  216. from your disability.

  217. It's so simple, isn't it?

  218. Jesus sees her suffering.

  219. She doesn't come to him

  220. for healing.

  221. In grace,

  222. the Lord Jesus,

  223. he takes the initiative.

  224. In tenderness and love,

  225. he calls her over.

  226. There's no great struggle,

  227. is there?

  228. There's no all-night praying,

  229. prayer meeting.

  230. There is no prolonged appeal.

  231. Begging the Lord,

  232. twisting the Lord's back

  233. behind his arm

  234. for healing.

  235. His arm behind his back

  236. for healing.

  237. It is just the unstoppable

  238. power of Jesus Christ,

  239. isn't it?

  240. He simply declares her free.

  241. Sat free from the daily struggle

  242. against spiritual bondage.

  243. Look at verse 13.

  244. He laid his hands on her

  245. and immediately

  246. she was made straight.

  247. And she glorified God.

  248. You bet she did.

  249. Imagine the relief.

  250. The joy from being bent

  251. double with pain.

  252. Pain filled

  253. to standing upright,

  254. upright,

  255. pain free

  256. in a touch.

  257. You see,

  258. Jesus is the compassionate

  259. freedom giver.

  260. He is the one who sees

  261. the brokenness and the pain.

  262. He sees the suffering of people

  263. and he acts to save them.

  264. In Luke's gospel,

  265. Jesus is most commonly

  266. called the saviour.

  267. But it's a word that can

  268. equally be translated

  269. as the healer.

  270. So while King Jesus

  271. is on earth,

  272. he shows that

  273. his kingdom

  274. is going to be one

  275. in which all the products

  276. of sin

  277. are destroyed.

  278. Sickness,

  279. suffering,

  280. and eventually

  281. death.

  282. King Jesus

  283. can set us free

  284. from the war.

  285. And he will

  286. one day

  287. fully

  288. and finally

  289. when he returns.

  290. Then we will enjoy

  291. fully the benefits

  292. of being his people.

  293. But at the heart

  294. of the freedom

  295. King Jesus'

  296. offering

  297. is the freedom

  298. from the punishment

  299. that our sin deserves.

  300. Freedom from

  301. the enslavement

  302. to the devil

  303. as those who

  304. follow the devil's lies.

  305. That life

  306. lived in rebellion,

  307. that is the best life,

  308. isn't it?

  309. That's the great devil's lie.

  310. That life

  311. lived in rebellion

  312. from God

  313. is one of true

  314. fulfilment.

  315. And that is the lie

  316. that we see time

  317. and again and again.

  318. Our non-Christian

  319. friends and family

  320. following

  321. a life

  322. where they believe

  323. that being in rebellion

  324. against God

  325. is the one of

  326. true fulfilment.

  327. That's what I think.

  328. And that is the true

  329. slavery

  330. that this woman's

  331. physical suffering

  332. points you to.

  333. For slavery

  334. to sin.

  335. Now because some of you

  336. are thinking it,

  337. let me just say

  338. the Bible does not

  339. directly link

  340. sickness to sin,

  341. does it?

  342. If you've got a cold

  343. this morning like I have,

  344. it's not because you

  345. gossiped about your

  346. neighbour last week.

  347. The Bible does say

  348. that sickness

  349. and suffering

  350. are in the world

  351. because of sin.

  352. We learnt that

  353. last week,

  354. didn't we?

  355. You see that

  356. in verses 1-9.

  357. That suffering

  358. is part of God's

  359. curse

  360. on a rebellious world.

  361. It is not his laser

  362. beam on certain people,

  363. but suffering is

  364. as a result of sin.

  365. But it's a curse

  366. that Jesus deals with.

  367. A curse that will

  368. finally be removed

  369. when Jesus judges

  370. the world.

  371. And to prove that

  372. in Luke's Gospel,

  373. as Jesus

  374. strides the earth,

  375. he shows his

  376. total authority

  377. to restore people

  378. to health completely.

  379. Jesus is the

  380. compassionate

  381. freedom giver.

  382. He says towards

  383. the end of the

  384. section,

  385. just come to

  386. Luke chapter 19

    Luke 19:10

  387. verse 10.

  388. Luke 19

    Luke 19:12

  389. verse 12.

  390. For the Son of Man

  391. came to seek

  392. and save

  393. the lost.

  394. That's what Jesus

  395. continues to do

  396. by his Spirit.

  397. as the Gospel

  398. is preached

  399. Sunday by Sunday

  400. and during the week.

  401. He has come to

  402. seek and to

  403. save the lost.

  404. In compassion,

  405. Jesus is setting

  406. people free.

  407. He's setting people

  408. from the lies

  409. of Satan

  410. and the punishment

  411. that their sin

  412. deserves.

  413. And finally,

  414. one day,

  415. we will all be free

  416. from all the

  417. products of sin

  418. in our lives.

  419. And that is what

  420. Jesus is doing.

  421. He's doing it in

  422. London,

  423. now in this city.

  424. He's doing it in

  425. Ealing.

  426. He's doing it in

  427. Sussex,

  428. in Surrey,

  429. in Swansea,

  430. in Brighton,

  431. in Birmingham,

  432. in Beverly.

  433. He's setting

  434. people free.

  435. Because of his

  436. compassion.

  437. And the question

  438. is, are we on

  439. board with his

  440. mission?

  441. Do we rejoice

  442. as he does that?

  443. Because as we

  444. look at this

  445. passage,

  446. the one who

  447. should have been

  448. most overjoyed

  449. in what Jesus

  450. has done for

  451. this poor woman,

  452. is far from

  453. happy,

  454. is he?

  455. In fact,

  456. he's angered

  457. by her freedom.

  458. So let me give

  459. you three reasons

  460. why the synagogue

  461. ruler reacts

  462. like that.

  463. So let's

  464. secondly look at

  465. the synagogue

  466. ruler.

  467. Here's the

  468. first thing we

  469. need to ask

  470. ourselves as a

  471. result of the

  472. synagogue ruler.

  473. Do you love

  474. being right more

  475. than you love

  476. the lost?

  477. Do you love

  478. being right more

  479. than you love

  480. the lost?

  481. It's such a

  482. great picture,

  483. isn't it?

  484. Verse 13.

  485. And he

  486. laid his

  487. hands on

  488. her and

  489. immediately

  490. she was

  491. made

  492. straight.

  493. Imagine it.

  494. And she

  495. glorified God.

  496. Verse 14.

  497. But the ruler

  498. of the synagogue

  499. indignant.

  500. It's a very

  501. strong word,

  502. isn't it?

  503. It's an angry

  504. snorting horse.

  505. That's what the

  506. word is used for.

  507. This man is

  508. angry with Jesus.

  509. He's not a

  510. little bit

  511. perturbed.

  512. This man is

  513. totally hacked

  514. off.

  515. Not that he's

  516. got the

  517. courage to

  518. face up to

  519. Jesus.

  520. Do you see

  521. what he

  522. says?

  523. It says,

  524. it doesn't

  525. bring it out

  526. that clearly

  527. in the ESV,

  528. but the ruler

  529. of the synagogue

  530. indignant with

  531. Jesus that

  532. Jesus has

  533. healed on the

  534. Sabbath said

  535. to the people.

  536. He said it

  537. very loudly to

  538. the people around

  539. him.

  540. Have you ever

  541. used that

  542. technique?

  543. You know

  544. what it's

  545. like when

  546. Noah and I

  547. are in the

  548. supermarket and

  549. people say,

  550. somebody says,

  551. in a very loud

  552. voice of the

  553. king,

  554. don't they?

  555. It is dreadful

  556. the way parents

  557. let their

  558. children behave

  559. in shops like

  560. this,

  561. isn't it?

  562. In our

  563. day that

  564. never happens.

  565. They don't

  566. say it to

  567. you.

  568. They say it

  569. very loudly

  570. to other

  571. people.

  572. Well,

  573. look what

  574. this man

  575. does.

  576. He says

  577. it to the

  578. people,

  579. isn't it?

  580. He says,

  581. there are

  582. six days in

  583. which work

  584. ought to be

  585. done.

  586. Come on

  587. those days

  588. and be

  589. healed,

  590. and not on

  591. the Sabbath

  592. day.

  593. But this

  594. woman,

  595. she didn't

  596. come for

  597. healing,

  598. did she?

  599. She just

  600. came to

  601. the synagogue

  602. as usual.

  603. It was a

  604. usual Saturday

  605. thing.

  606. And Jesus

  607. seeing her

  608. need,

  609. his heart

  610. goes out

  611. to her,

  612. and he

  613. frees her

  614. from her

  615. agony.

  616. Where is

  617. the compassion

  618. of this

  619. bloke?

  620. He's the

  621. synagogue

  622. ruler after all.

  623. He is the

  624. pastor.

  625. He is one

  626. of the

  627. elders.

  628. That's what

  629. it's like.

  630. He must

  631. have seen

  632. her suffering

  633. for the

  634. last 18

  635. years.

  636. He must

  637. have seen

  638. her struggle

  639. to live

  640. day by

  641. day.

  642. He's seen

  643. how loyally

  644. she's

  645. come to

  646. the

  647. synagogue

  648. each

  649. week.

  650. This

  651. man must

  652. have

  653. known

  654. her

  655. well.

  656. The

  657. synagogue

  658. ruler,

  659. the

  660. synagogue

  661. is like

  662. the local

  663. Bible

  664. study

  665. centre.

  666. This

  667. is like

  668. her

  669. house

  670. group

  671. leader.

  672. But the

  673. problem

  674. is that

  675. he's got

  676. his head

  677. so far

  678. shoved

  679. up his

  680. own

  681. Bible

  682. study,

  683. he's

  684. totally

  685. lost

  686. sight of

  687. the

  688. Bible,

  689. hasn't

  690. he?

  691. What is

  692. the purpose

  693. of the

  694. Bible?

  695. To bring

  696. people into

  697. a

  698. relationship

  699. with

  700. God?

  701. He's

  702. lost

  703. sight of

  704. the

  705. Sabbath.

  706. What is

  707. the

  708. Sabbath

  709. meant

  710. to

  711. represent?

  712. What is

  713. the

  714. Sabbath

  715. meant

  716. to

  717. represent?

  718. It is

  719. meant

  720. to

  721. represent

  722. a

  723. day

  724. of

  725. freedom.

  726. It was

  727. the day

  728. that they

  729. were to

  730. remember

  731. that God

  732. rested in

  733. Genesis 1.

  734. And it was

  735. the day

  736. that was

  737. to remind

  738. them that

  739. freedom

  740. had been

  741. given to

  742. them as

  743. the people.

  744. That God

  745. had freed

  746. them from

  747. Egypt.

  748. And God

  749. had freed

  750. them to

  751. live in

  752. the

  753. promised

  754. land.

  755. It was

  756. the day

  757. that they

  758. were to

  759. remember

  760. perfect

  761. freedom

  762. is still

  763. to come.

  764. When all

  765. those

  766. were to

  767. do

  768. on the

  769. Sabbath

  770. than to

  771. free

  772. someone

  773. from

  774. bondage

  775. to

  776. Satan

  777. and

  778. physical

  779. suffering.

  780. It is

  781. a

  782. totally

  783. Sabbath

  784. activity.

  785. But this

  786. cynical

  787. ruler is

  788. so obsessed

  789. with his

  790. own way

  791. of doing

  792. things,

  793. so obsessed

  794. with his

  795. spin,

  796. his take

  797. on God's

  798. law,

  799. that when a

  800. woman he

  801. administered

  802. to for as

  803. long as

  804. some of

  805. you have

  806. been

  807. alive,

  808. is

  809. wonderfully

  810. released

  811. from her

  812. suffering,

  813. he's

  814. furious.

  815. And it's

  816. actually easy

  817. to love

  818. being right

  819. more than

  820. we love

  821. the lost.

  822. Don't get

  823. me wrong,

  824. I think

  825. there is

  826. a right

  827. and I

  828. think there

  829. is a

  830. wrong way

  831. to follow

  832. the Lord

  833. Jesus.

  834. I believe

  835. in doctrine,

  836. I believe

  837. that for a

  838. number of

  839. years we

  840. didn't teach

  841. doctrine enough

  842. in this

  843. church.

  844. It's one

  845. of the

  846. joys of

  847. adult Sunday

  848. school.

  849. It's why

  850. I want

  851. you all

  852. to go to

  853. adult Sunday

  854. school if

  855. you possibly

  856. can on a

  857. Sunday

  858. morning because

  859. of teaching

  860. doctrine.

  861. We need

  862. to weigh

  863. everything we

  864. do against

  865. the Bible.

  866. There are

  867. right and

  868. wrong things

  869. we need to

  870. teach and

  871. we need to

  872. avoid.

  873. We need to

  874. know when

  875. it's the

  876. wrong way to

  877. follow the

  878. Lord Jesus.

  879. We do

  880. honour to

  881. God by

  882. spirit-empowered

  883. obedience.

  884. I believe in

  885. duty in the

  886. Christian life.

  887. We can

  888. sniff a

  889. bit of

  890. heresy a

  891. mile off

  892. can't

  893. we?

  894. But when

  895. that means

  896. that we

  897. cannot

  898. rejoice in

  899. people being

  900. set free

  901. we've got a

  902. serious problem.

  903. Especially

  904. when like

  905. the synagogue

  906. ruler it's

  907. our own

  908. little spin

  909. our own

  910. little extra

  911. law the

  912. thing we've

  913. added to

  914. God's word

  915. and we're

  916. particularly

  917. worried about

  918. that.

  919. One of my

  920. problems is I

  921. just love

  922. being right.

  923. When I

  924. think of some

  925. of the churches

  926. in this

  927. city I

  928. really

  929. struggle

  930. with them.

  931. I really

  932. struggle with

  933. them.

  934. Some of the

  935. churches in

  936. Ealing actually.

  937. I don't

  938. think they're

  939. right.

  940. I think

  941. there are

  942. certain

  943. biblical

  944. things I've

  945. got massive

  946. issues with

  947. them.

  948. I profoundly

  949. disagree with

  950. them.

  951. I have to

  952. say there's

  953. a card

  954. carrying

  955. Westminster

  956. Confession

  957. Three

  958. Forms of

  959. Unity

  960. Loving

  961. Man.

  962. But I've

  963. got to

  964. say this.

  965. Many of

  966. these churches

  967. introduce people

  968. to Jesus.

  969. And God

  970. is using

  971. them to set

  972. people free.

  973. They're not

  974. perfect.

  975. But neither

  976. am I.

  977. And here I

  978. think there are

  979. areas where

  980. they are

  981. really seriously

  982. mistaken.

  983. But my

  984. emotional

  985. reaction

  986. sometimes

  987. is as if

  988. I'd rather

  989. that they

  990. didn't see

  991. people come

  992. to Jesus.

  993. When that

  994. is the

  995. case,

  996. that is

  997. loving

  998. being right

  999. more than

  1000. loving the

  1001. lost.

  1002. Christ.

  1003. It happens

  1004. when we

  1005. get irritated

  1006. by God

  1007. for working

  1008. outside our

  1009. carefully run

  1010. programme.

  1011. It happens

  1012. when God

  1013. uses another

  1014. church to

  1015. save people.

  1016. When he

  1017. doesn't use

  1018. my ministry

  1019. that I'm

  1020. involved with.

  1021. it happens

  1022. when other

  1023. things in

  1024. church life

  1025. that I'm

  1026. not involved

  1027. with are

  1028. going really

  1029. well.

  1030. And the

  1031. things that

  1032. I'm involved

  1033. with are

  1034. not going

  1035. really well.

  1036. And if

  1037. truth be

  1038. told, I'm

  1039. pretty angry

  1040. about it.

  1041. I find it

  1042. hard this

  1043. week.

  1044. I'm doing

  1045. four weeks

  1046. at the

  1047. Morgate

  1048. Talks.

  1049. They do

  1050. question and

  1051. answer after

  1052. it.

  1053. There is

  1054. a very

  1055. annoying

  1056. atheist

  1057. who sits

  1058. right in

  1059. the front

  1060. row.

  1061. Closes

  1062. his eyes

  1063. during my

  1064. talks.

  1065. And there

  1066. was question

  1067. and answer.

  1068. And he

  1069. asked a

  1070. very, very

  1071. good question

  1072. that I

  1073. couldn't

  1074. really

  1075. answer.

  1076. I

  1077. wanted to

  1078. be

  1079. right.

  1080. And I

  1081. wanted him

  1082. to be

  1083. shown to

  1084. be wrong.

  1085. And I

  1086. think that's

  1087. one of the

  1088. dangers,

  1089. isn't it?

  1090. The danger

  1091. of so

  1092. wanting to

  1093. be right

  1094. that we're

  1095. not

  1096. compassionate

  1097. about the

  1098. lost.

  1099. And don't

  1100. think we're

  1101. free of

  1102. it.

  1103. We don't

  1104. pity them

  1105. like Jesus.

  1106. But it's

  1107. not just

  1108. self-righteousness

  1109. in this

  1110. guy.

  1111. It's

  1112. self-interest

  1113. as well.

  1114. Here's the

  1115. second question.

  1116. Do you

  1117. love

  1118. convenience

  1119. more than

  1120. you love

  1121. the lost?

  1122. Do you

  1123. love

  1124. convenience

  1125. more than

  1126. you love

  1127. the lost?

  1128. Because this

  1129. man's

  1130. religion was

  1131. actually

  1132. centred around

  1133. himself.

  1134. Look at

  1135. verse 15.

  1136. Then the

  1137. Lord

  1138. answered,

  1139. you hypocrites,

  1140. does not

  1141. each of you

  1142. on the

  1143. Sabbath

  1144. and tie

  1145. his ox

  1146. or his

  1147. donkey

  1148. from the

  1149. manger

  1150. and lead

  1151. it away

  1152. to water

  1153. it?

  1154. The word

  1155. hypocrisy

  1156. comes from

  1157. the Greek

  1158. theatre.

  1159. They didn't

  1160. have great

  1161. actors in

  1162. those days

  1163. like Sandra

  1164. Bullock

  1165. and John

  1166. Thorne

  1167. or any

  1168. of those

  1169. kind of

  1170. people.

  1171. They were

  1172. terrible

  1173. actors.

  1174. They had

  1175. a mask

  1176. that they

  1177. put over

  1178. their face.

  1179. That was

  1180. what they

  1181. did in

  1182. the Greek

  1183. theatre.

  1184. It was

  1185. an act.

  1186. And when

  1187. they were

  1188. on stage

  1189. they wore

  1190. it.

  1191. And they

  1192. wore a mask

  1193. to show

  1194. what mood

  1195. they were

  1196. in.

  1197. And to

  1198. be hypocrite

  1199. was to

  1200. have a

  1201. mask

  1202. in front

  1203. of you.

  1204. It is

  1205. to behave

  1206. one way

  1207. outwardly

  1208. but inwardly

  1209. to have

  1210. another set

  1211. of attitudes.

  1212. And do you

  1213. know what

  1214. the problem

  1215. is?

  1216. The problem

  1217. is we

  1218. just can't

  1219. keep up

  1220. the full

  1221. performance

  1222. can we?

  1223. All the

  1224. time.

  1225. So the

  1226. synagogue

  1227. ruler is

  1228. very keen

  1229. on rigid

  1230. Sabbath

  1231. keeping

  1232. as long

  1233. as it

  1234. doesn't

  1235. affect him.

  1236. He's

  1237. very keen

  1238. on rigid

  1239. Sabbath

  1240. keeping

  1241. as long

  1242. as he

  1243. can keep

  1244. his

  1245. animal

  1246. healthy.

  1247. That is

  1248. the way

  1249. that he's

  1250. rewritten

  1251. the rules.

  1252. His

  1253. ox

  1254. or his

  1255. donkey

  1256. was

  1257. better

  1258. treated

  1259. on the

  1260. Sabbath

  1261. than the

  1262. crippled

  1263. woman

  1264. in his

  1265. congregation.

  1266. His

  1267. religion

  1268. is just

  1269. a matter

  1270. of personal

  1271. convenience.

  1272. He's got

  1273. two sets

  1274. of rules

  1275. one set

  1276. that applies

  1277. to him

  1278. and another

  1279. set that

  1280. applies to

  1281. everyone else.

  1282. He cares

  1283. more for the

  1284. convenience

  1285. of his

  1286. life

  1287. than for

  1288. the

  1289. plight

  1290. of this

  1291. crippled

  1292. woman.

  1293. It's

  1294. the opposite

  1295. of compassion

  1296. isn't it?

  1297. It's the

  1298. opposite

  1299. of the

  1300. Lord

  1301. Jesus.

  1302. Whatever

  1303. is easiest

  1304. for us

  1305. orders our

  1306. lives.

  1307. We live in

  1308. that sort of

  1309. culture don't

  1310. we?

  1311. It's a

  1312. self-indulgent

  1313. culture.

  1314. It's one that

  1315. seeks our own

  1316. pleasure above

  1317. all else.

  1318. It starts in

  1319. sixth form doesn't

  1320. it?

  1321. You know

  1322. when sixth form

  1323. is a great

  1324. time of life

  1325. but you begin

  1326. to be released

  1327. from some of the

  1328. rules of school

  1329. your school

  1330. might start

  1331. to experiment

  1332. with drink

  1333. and drugs

  1334. and sex

  1335. and then you

  1336. get to student

  1337. days and it

  1338. really kicks

  1339. in living for

  1340. pleasure.

  1341. But then you

  1342. go into the

  1343. workplace and

  1344. you're told

  1345. you've got to

  1346. think about

  1347. yourself.

  1348. You've got to

  1349. keep moving up

  1350. the career ladder

  1351. keep earning

  1352. the money so

  1353. you can enjoy

  1354. it and then

  1355. you retire and

  1356. retirement is

  1357. all about a

  1358. life of leisure.

  1359. And it's a

  1360. huge temptation

  1361. for all of us

  1362. that we opt

  1363. for our own

  1364. comfort.

  1365. And putting

  1366. ourselves out

  1367. for others.

  1368. I've had lots

  1369. of students

  1370. prepared this

  1371. week so I

  1372. made the

  1373. fitness thing

  1374. I'm googling

  1375. comfort and

  1376. convenience.

  1377. I was hoping

  1378. to find some

  1379. clever illustrations.

  1380. What is odd

  1381. when you google

  1382. comfort,

  1383. convenience and

  1384. sacrifice the

  1385. three of them

  1386. together.

  1387. There are a

  1388. worrying number

  1389. of sites for

  1390. weddings and

  1391. shoes for

  1392. weddings particularly.

  1393. There's even a

  1394. site about buying

  1395. a bed for your

  1396. dog.

  1397. It's no help

  1398. at all on the

  1399. illustration and

  1400. there it is

  1401. isn't it?

  1402. Those are the

  1403. things we worry

  1404. about.

  1405. So what really

  1406. matters is not

  1407. having the right

  1408. shoes for the

  1409. wedding.

  1410. Or we're more

  1411. interested that our

  1412. dog has got back

  1413. pain than our

  1414. neighbours have

  1415. salvation.

  1416. We get more

  1417. excited about our

  1418. favourite TV programme

  1419. than we do about

  1420. the Lord's Day.

  1421. Or I'm more

  1422. worried that what I'm

  1423. having for my tea

1424. than I am with my

  1425. sister as a

  1426. Christian.

  1427. I mostly engage

  1428. with my own

  1429. convenience.

  1430. I order my

  1431. day for my

  1432. own convenience.

  1433. Or do I

  1434. order it for the

  1435. lost people around

  1436. me?

  1437. That God in

  1438. his sovereignty

  1439. has brought

  1440. around you.

  1441. The people who

  1442. you might be the

  1443. only Christian that

  1444. they know.

  1445. You see if you

  1446. love them you'll

  1447. spend time loving

  1448. them.

  1449. Putting emotional

  1450. energy into them.

  1451. The synagogue

  1452. ruler is more

  1453. interested in his

  1454. livestock than he

  1455. is by this crippled

  1456. woman.

  1457. It's all about

  1458. his convenience.

  1459. And the reason

  1460. we need to spend

  1461. our lives for the

  1462. sake of others is

  1463. that they desperately

  1464. need to be set

  1465. free.

  1466. Here's the last

  1467. thing.

  1468. Do we see lost

  1469. people as they

  1470. are?

  1471. Do we see how

  1472. lost people are?

  1473. Look at verse

  1474. 16.

  1475. And ought not

  1476. this woman, a

  1477. daughter of

  1478. Abraham, who

  1479. was Satan

  1480. bound for 18

  1481. years, be

  1482. loosed from

  1483. this bond on

  1484. the Sabbath

  1485. day?

  1486. In other

  1487. ways Jesus

  1488. says, listen

  1489. if you're

  1490. willing to

  1491. feed your

  1492. dog on

  1493. a Sunday

  1494. shouldn't

  1495. this woman

  1496. be given

  1497. her freedom

  1498. on a

  1499. Sunday?

  1500. Freedom from

  1501. Satan?

  1502. Because that

  1503. is the state

  1504. of all people

  1505. without the

  1506. Lord Jesus

  1507. isn't it?

  1508. They are

  1509. followers of

  1510. the devil.

  1511. He is

  1512. the prince of

  1513. the air.

  1514. He has them

  1515. in his power.

  1516. They live

  1517. life for his

  1518. lies.

  1519. They don't

  1520. even know

  1521. it.

  1522. They don't

  1523. even know

  1524. that God

  1525. cares.

  1526. they live

  1527. lives for

  1528. that lie

  1529. that God

  1530. doesn't

  1531. care even

  1532. if he

  1533. exists.

  1534. They live

  1535. life for

  1536. that lie

  1537. that Jesus

  1538. doesn't

  1539. matter and

  1540. the world

  1541. is a much

  1542. better place

  1543. if we run

  1544. it for

  1545. ourselves.

  1546. And those

  1547. are the

  1548. lives that

  1549. the world

  1550. lives for

  1551. and it's

  1552. slavery.

  1553. The problem

  1554. is, isn't

  1555. it, is that

  1556. bondage to

  1557. Satan is

  1558. not always so

  1559. clearly

  1560. distressing.

  1561. we can

  1562. clearly see

  1563. this woman's

  1564. needs, can't

  1565. we, even

  1566. reading about

  1567. it.

  1568. If this

  1569. woman walked

  1570. in here this

  1571. morning we

  1572. would all

  1573. look over,

  1574. sigh, and

  1575. think, oh

  1576. poor dad.

  1577. If we were

  1578. near her we'd

  1579. get up, we'd

  1580. help her into

  1581. her seat.

  1582. We'd have

  1583. leapt up and

  1584. we'd have

  1585. helped her

  1586. because her

  1587. physical needs

  1588. were visible

  1589. on the outside

  1590. but you

  1591. cannot see

  1592. most people's

  1593. spiritual needs.

  1594. Your friends,

  1595. family,

  1596. neighbours,

  1597. work colleagues,

  1598. they don't

  1599. come in,

  1600. together with

  1601. creaking chains.

  1602. It would be

  1603. easy if our

  1604. non-Christian

  1605. friends came

  1606. swathed in

  1607. chains.

  1608. The devil is

  1609. far, far more

  1610. subtle, isn't

  1611. he?

  1612. He enslaves

  1613. people very

  1614. often in the

  1615. things that

  1616. they want.

  1617. And often

  1618. they seem to

  1619. have better

  1620. lives than

  1621. us.

  1622. They seem

  1623. more successful,

  1624. more popular,

  1625. more happy,

  1626. more secure.

  1627. They seemingly

  1628. seem to enjoy

  1629. more freedom

  1630. but they're

  1631. enslaved to

  1632. see.

  1633. The devil

  1634. often uses

  1635. very good

  1636. things to

  1637. grab people

  1638. into his

  1639. grip.

  1640. With Eve

  1641. it was

  1642. fruit.

  1643. Fruit is

  1644. good for

  1645. you, so

  1646. I'm told.

  1647. And Eve

  1648. saw that the

  1649. fruit was

  1650. good for

  1651. food and

  1652. it was

  1653. pleasing for

  1654. the eye and

  1655. it was

  1656. desirable for

  1657. gaining wisdom

  1658. and she

  1659. took some

  1660. and she

  1661. ate it.

  1662. you see

  1663. we will

  1664. never

  1665. truly

  1666. rejoice

  1667. in the

  1668. freedom of

  1669. Jesus

  1670. until we

  1671. see the

  1672. lostness of

  1673. the lost.

  1674. And Luke

  1675. emphasizes that

  1676. you see

  1677. Jesus says

  1678. bound,

  1679. bound for

  1680. 18 long

  1681. years.

  1682. Life in the

  1683. world without

  1684. Jesus can

  1685. never be what

  1686. God wanted

  1687. it to be.

  1688. Life in

  1689. eternity without

  1690. Christ is a

  1691. punishment more

  1692. awful than

  1693. words can

  1694. describe.

  1695. Philip

  1696. Jensen says

  1697. you can

  1698. photograph

  1699. terrible

  1700. suffering but

  1701. you cannot

  1702. photograph a

  1703. person in

  1704. hell.

  1705. I wonder

  1706. whether we

  1707. could.

  1708. Or if we

  1709. could see the

  1710. anguish in

  1711. our friends

  1712. eyes on the

  1713. day of

  1714. judgment.

  1715. If only we

  1716. could accept

  1717. the warnings

  1718. of the

  1719. Bible that

  1720. slavery to

  1721. sin and

  1722. Satan is

  1723. worse than

  1724. being bent

  1725. double in

  1726. agony every

  1727. day of

  1728. your life.

  1729. You see

  1730. to have true

  1731. compassion is

  1732. to see how

  1733. lost people

  1734. are.

  1735. How bound

  1736. they are

  1737. without

  1738. Christ.

  1739. I don't

  1740. want to

  1741. guilt trip

  1742. you this

  1743. morning.

  1744. I really

  1745. don't.

  1746. Preaching

  1747. Revelation on

  1748. Sunday nights

  1749. has done me

  1750. the world

  1751. of good in

  1752. seeing the

  1753. final judgment

  1754. and how it

  1755. must motivate

  1756. us.

  1757. But as I

  1758. come to this

  1759. passage my

  1760. prayer for

  1761. myself and

  1762. for us as a

  1763. church family

  1764. is that by

  1765. God's spirit

  1766. I might love

  1767. people more

  1768. than I love

  1769. my own

  1770. convenience.

  1771. that I

  1772. might long

  1773. for their

  1774. freedom more

  1775. than I

  1776. long to

  1777. be right.

  1778. And I

  1779. might be a

  1780. little bit

  1781. more like

  1782. the Lord

  1783. Jesus because

  1784. Jesus didn't

  1785. put his

  1786. righteousness

  1787. first did

  1788. he.

  1789. Jesus

  1790. actually

  1791. suffered

  1792. silently

  1793. the injustice

  1794. and he took

  1795. my unrighteousness

  1796. upon himself

  1797. and he didn't

  1798. live for his

  1799. convenience and

  1800. he didn't live

  1801. for his

  1802. comfort and

  1803. he gave up

  1804. the perfection

  1805. of heaven

  1806. to walk on

  1807. this squalid

  1808. earth.

  1809. And he

  1810. then experienced

  1811. what it was

  1812. to be lost

  1813. for us.

  1814. And maybe

  1815. as I spend

  1816. a bit more

  1817. time thinking

  1818. on the

  1819. compassion

  1820. and the

  1821. love of

  1822. the Lord

  1823. Jesus

  1824. I would

  1825. find myself

  1826. a little bit

  1827. more like

  1828. him and a

  1829. little bit

  1830. less like

  1831. those nitpicking

  1832. religious leaders.

  1833. And I'd

  1834. probably be

  1835. rejoicing at

  1836. all the

  1837. glorious things

  1838. that God

  1839. is doing.

  1840. Let's pray.
