  1. Well, football pundits are not known for being people who have great deep insights into life.

  2. They might have great insights about football formations or managers strategies, but rarely about fundamental principles of life.

  3. However, I clearly remember one great exception. A long time ago, it was the 94-95 football season. Newcastle United were playing in some European tournament.

  4. I think they were playing a big team. I think it was Barcelona. I can't remember. That doesn't matter.

  5. And they were 2-0 up at half-time at St. James' Park. And the pundits back in the studio were raving about the performance.

  6. And at the end of the match, they squandered it. I can't remember if it was a draw or they lost. I don't recall.

  7. But I went back to the studio and Des Lynam, who was the anchor man at the time, just turned to Alan Hansen and just said,

  8. Well, Alan?

  9. And Hansen delivered a line that only a sort of Church of Scotland minister of my youth where I grew up could deliver.

  10. He stared at the camera and in his low tones uttered,

  11. Complacency is an evil word.

  12. And he may not have been talking about Newcastle United.

  13. He could have been talking about Israel in 760 BC, the year that Amos was preaching.

  14. They were complacent people.

  15. They took God's grace for granted.

  16. They enjoyed the privilege of being God's people,

  17. but had forgotten the purpose for which they were God's people.

  18. They enjoyed the privileges, but forgot their purpose in God saving them.

  19. Not only that, but the way Amos has been speaking up to now might have confirmed them in their complacency.

  20. If you read through chapter 1 up to chapter 2 verse 5,

  21. you'll see that Amos has been declaring God's judgment against all the nations around them.

  22. Against their bitter enemies, the Amorites,

  23. who in chapter 1 verse 13 had invaded a bit of Israel and killed pregnant women, ripping them open.

  24. The Israelites would have been delighted to hear God's judgment against them.

  25. And then Amos had pronounced God's judgment on Judah to the south,

  26. their tiny insignificant neighbour,

  27. those self-righteous ones who had the temple in Jerusalem,

  28. who were still under a king in David's line.

  29. And of course that meant Amos had preached against seven nations.

  30. Seven, the Hebrew idea, number of completeness.

  31. So at chapter 2 verse 5, the congregation are expecting Amos to sit down.

  32. They're cheering.

  33. Well done, God's going to judge those horrible people around us.

  34. They'd be confirmed in their complacency.

  35. But Amos has a shock for them,

  36. in that the longest judgment is the eighth one.

  37. I've told my sermons like this,

  38. they feel like I'm coming into land and then I take off again.

  39. That's what Amos does.

  40. That's a warning for later on, by the way.

  41. That's what Amos does here.

  42. He takes off again and God's greatest judgment,

  43. the longest piece of text is directed against Israel in verses 6 to 16.

  44. Against their complacency.

  45. They are enjoying the privileges of being God's people,

  46. but have forgotten the purpose.

  47. Now I wonder how often we can be like that as Christians.

  48. We can turn up at church,

  49. we can enjoy the gospel message

  50. that we are forgiven freely by God's grace,

  51. which we are.

  52. And we enjoy that privilege,

  53. but become complacent about the purpose for which God saved us.

  54. What is that purpose?

  55. Well, it's the same as the purpose of saving Israel in the Old Testament.

  56. Exodus chapter 19, verses 5 and 6,

    Exodus 19:5

  57. God had said,

  58. you will be to me a holy nation,

  59. and a royal priesthood.

  60. And those are words that Peter picks up in 1 Peter chapter 2,

    1 Peter 2 chapter mention

  61. where he says this of Christians today,

  62. you are a chosen race,

  63. a royal priesthood,

  64. a holy nation,

  65. a people for God's own possession.

  66. Why?

  67. That you may proclaim the excellencies of him

  68. who called you out of darkness

  69. into his marvellous light.

  70. As those who have been rescued by God's grace,

  71. were to show his beauty,

  72. his excellencies,

  73. and declare those to the world around us.

  74. Once you were not a people,

  75. but now you are God's people.

  76. Once you have not received mercy,

  77. but now you have received mercy.

  78. The people of Amos' day were complacent

  79. because they just counted the privilege

  80. and forgot the purpose.

  81. We can become complacent

  82. when we remember that God is love,

  83. but forget that he is light.

  84. When we remember what we've been saved from,

  85. sin and death and hell,

  86. but not what we've been saved for,

  87. to be a holy nation and a royal priesthood.

  88. So Amos' words to Israel in 790 BC

  89. are also relevant to us today.

  90. Because his message is essentially

  91. that God has graciously provided

  92. everything you need for salvation.

  93. And therefore, God's people must show his holiness

  94. in every facet of our lives.

  95. Well, how were the people of Israel

  96. failing to do that?

  97. Well, in two main ways.

  98. They dishonoured God by their actions.

  99. They dishonoured God by their actions.

  100. That's verses 6 to 9.

  101. And they despised God's gracious gifts.

  102. Verses 9 to 12.

  103. Let's look at those things first

  104. before we turn and see how it works out for us.

  105. So first of all,

  106. they despised God's character

  107. through their actions.

  108. Look at verse 7 for a moment.

  109. To the end of verse 7.

  110. There's a key phrase there.

  111. What does Amos say?

  112. My holy name is profaned.

  113. They were supposed to be a holy people

  114. showing God's excellency and glory and light.

  115. But they were dragging God's name through the mud

  116. by the way they acted.

  117. They did that in three particular ways.

  118. First of all,

  119. by their social interactions.

  120. And then by their sexual practices.

  121. And then finally,

  122. by their self-centred worship.

  123. So first of all,

  124. they're social practices.

  125. That's what Amos is talking on about

  126. in verse 6 for example.

  127. Thus says the Lord,

  128. for three transgressions of Israel

  129. and for four,

  130. I will not revoke the punishment.

  131. Because they sell the righteous for silver

  132. and the needy for a pair of sandals.

  133. Now the righteous in this context

  134. are not the morally perfect,

  135. but they're the legally innocent.

  136. They're the innocent party

  137. in a civil case in the law courts.

  138. But what's happening is

  139. rather than the judges

  140. exercising justice fairly,

  141. the judges are being bought with a bribe.

  142. You can pay them silver

  143. and they're ruling the rich person's favour.

  144. Or give them a bit of land.

  145. Perhaps that's what the sandals refers to.

  146. Land being transacted.

  147. And they'll make the right,

  148. they'll call the innocent person guilty.

  149. There was no justice there.

  150. And yet the Lord is just.

  151. So they're dishonouring his character.

  152. Also there's a lack of mercy.

  153. The Lord is merciful.

  154. Remember in Israel's history

  155. he rescued them

  156. out of slavery in Egypt.

  157. Not because of anything they had done,

  158. but because he heard their cry

  159. and was faithful to his promises.

  160. Yet look how,

  161. look how the Israelites

  162. are treating the poor and needy.

  163. Look at verse 7.

  164. You who trample the head of the poor

  165. into the dust of the earth

  166. and turn aside from the way of the afflicted.

  167. The afflicted are downtrodden

  168. with no strength or resources of their own.

  169. And yet where God has shown mercy

  170. to the Israelites,

  171. they are not showing mercy to each other.

  172. They are despising the weak and the needy.

  173. Now what we need to remember

  174. as we read these words,

  175. who they're addressed to.

  176. It's very easy, isn't it,

  177. to look out on the world

  178. and see injustice around the world.

  179. Or look out on our society

  180. and see where the poor

  181. and the afflicted are trodden upon.

  182. But this is not written

  183. to any particular nation.

  184. This is God's word to Israel.

  185. Israel were his covenant people.

  186. People who had entered into relationship

  187. with God at Mount Sinai.

  188. The people he called for his own possession.

  189. So first and foremost,

  190. we need to read this as to us,

  191. the church,

  192. to God's people on earth.

  193. And not worry about the sins

  194. of the nations around us

  195. or the culture we're part of.

  196. So the challenge for us

  197. as we read about Israel's social sins

  198. is what are our social practices?

  199. Do we dishonour God's name

  200. in the way we act together

  201. as a people?

  202. I'm sure we're good and tender-hearted

  203. towards those who are financially

  204. poor and afflicted.

  205. See they drop in here

  206. as I look at the news sheet.

  207. That's great.

  208. But I wonder how we deal

  209. with other kinds of affliction.

  210. I know of people who have struggled

  211. with mental health issues in church

  212. for years,

  213. be it depression

  214. or bipolar disorder.

  215. And they never feel

  216. they can voice their difficulties

  217. and voice their problems

  218. because they feel they'll be judged

  219. and disregarded

  220. and maybe trampled on.

  221. How do we deal with those

  222. in that kind of affliction?

  223. Are we merciful and compassionate

  224. as God is?

  225. Or do we disregard,

  226. turn aside from the way of the afflicted

  227. as the Israelites did?

  228. So they dishonoured God

  229. through their social practices

  230. but also through their sexual practices.

  231. Look at verse 7.

  232. The end of verse 7.

  233. A man and his father

  234. go into the same girl

  235. so that my holy name

  236. is profaned.

  237. There's a pattern here.

  238. Once again,

  239. it's the powerful

  240. exploiting the weak.

  241. The powerful,

  242. the men

  243. who had the rights

  244. and the property

  245. and everything else in society.

  246. Oppressing

  247. the vulnerable,

  248. the weak,

  249. the girl in this case.

  250. And again,

  251. whereas the Lord

  252. is faithful,

  253. here's a picture of a man

  254. totally bailing out

  255. in his marriage vows

  256. and maybe even

  257. taking his son along with him.

  258. It's a picture of sexual promiscuity

  259. of the worst type.

  260. Because the question for us

  261. is how does our sexual conduct

  262. honour God?

  263. In a sex-mad society,

  264. a society where

  265. we read that 50%

  266. of men in a church

  267. will be addicted

  268. to internet pornography.

  269. Does our conduct

  270. in private

  271. that God sees

  272. honour him?

  273. Well, it wasn't just

  274. their social practices

  275. and their sexual practices,

  276. it was also their

  277. self-centred worship practices.

  278. Look at verse 8.

  279. They lay themselves down

  280. beside every altar

  281. on garments

  282. taken in pledge.

  283. In the house of their God

  284. they drink the wine

  285. of those who've been fined.

  286. Almost every line there

  287. is a contradiction

  288. of the law of Moses.

  289. The bottom line is

  290. they were being

  291. completely self-centred

  292. in what they did

  293. when they gathered

  294. to worship God.

  295. It wasn't God

  296. they were worshipping.

  297. It was their own desires,

  298. their own lusts,

  299. their own satisfaction.

  300. You can imagine

  301. the kind of conversations

  302. these guys would have had

  303. when they went into the office

  304. on the next day,

  305. the day after the Sabbath.

  306. If you can imagine

  307. them going to an office

  308. the day after the Sabbath.

  309. What did you do

  310. on the Sabbath then?

  311. Oh, it was great.

  312. I just went up to the shrine

  313. just behind my house.

  314. It's very convenient.

  315. You don't have to go anywhere.

  316. It's just up there

  317. on the hill.

  318. And there's a very nice

  319. shrine prostitute up there

  320. so I spent some time

  321. with her.

  322. And I didn't want to get

  323. my own coat dirty

  324. so I took the coat

  325. that I'd taken from the beggar

  326. at the end of our road,

  327. the guy who owes me some money.

  328. Now he must have been cold

  329. last night

  330. because I hadn't given

  331. this coat back to him.

  332. I know you're supposed to

  333. but hey,

  334. I don't care about him.

  335. I was able to lie down

  336. on his garment

  337. so mine didn't get dirty.

  338. I had a great time

  339. up at the shrine

  340. and then the priest

  341. came around at the end

  342. with all the wine

  343. he confiscated

  344. from the fines

  345. from other people

  346. and we had a wild party

  347. and drunk till dawn.

  348. It was great.

  349. In fact,

  350. it's a miracle

  351. I've been able to get

  352. into work this morning

  353. I've got such a bad hangover.

  354. Now,

  355. I know that doesn't go on

  356. here at IPC,

  357. it doesn't go on

  358. at Duke Street

  359. in Richmond either.

  360. But,

  361. but,

  362. we need to see behind this

  363. the self-centeredness

  364. involved in this.

  365. Not only the self-centeredness

  366. but the way

  367. they were worshipping

  368. their God

  369. was not the way

  370. God had declared

  371. they should

  372. through the scriptures.

  373. but it was the way

  374. the nations around them

  375. were worshipping

  376. their gods.

  377. Shrine prostitutes

  378. and all that kind of stuff

  379. altars wherever

  380. you wanted them

  381. lots of alcohol

  382. that was what

  383. the nations around them did.

  384. This was

  385. syncretistic worship.

  386. It was borrowing

  387. ideas and practices

  388. from the world around them

  389. rather than

  390. faithful worship

  391. of the true God

  392. the way he had revealed.

  393. Now,

  394. are there ways

  395. in which we can borrow

  396. ideas from the world

  397. around us

  398. and they incorporate

  399. themselves into the way

  400. we worship God?

  401. Even here

  402. in a good

  403. solid church

  404. like IPC Ewing

  405. or even in

  406. Duke Street in Richmond.

  407. Well,

  408. let me suggest

  409. a couple of ways

  410. we can end up

  411. doing this

  412. inadvertently.

  413. In this day and age

  414. Eastern religion

  415. is very popular,

  416. isn't it?

  417. Fits in with our

  418. culture of post-modernism

  419. and the idea

  420. of meditation

  421. is a popular idea

  422. especially a stressed

  423. out busy age

  424. where

  425. everyone feels

  426. like they're online

  427. 24 hours.

  428. So meditation

  429. is a very popular

  430. thing.

  431. But Eastern meditation

  432. is all about

  433. emptying your mind,

  434. having nothing

  435. in your mind.

  436. Biblical meditation

  437. is about filling

  438. your mind

  439. with God's word.

  440. That's one area

  441. where sometimes

  442. we can talk

  443. very loosely

  444. about meditation

  445. and we end up

  446. thinking about

  447. all sorts of stuff

  448. that isn't what

  449. the Bible describes

  450. as meditation.

  451. So we can dishonor

  452. God in our

  453. worship practices.

  454. Or when going

  455. to church

  456. is all about

  457. our own preferences,

  458. the kind of music

  459. we like,

  460. the kind of things

  461. we like,

  462. we can end up

  463. just fulfilling

  464. our own selfish

  465. practices.

  466. Or I have

  467. friends who go

  468. to some churches

  469. who will say,

  470. oh we had a great

  471. time of worship,

  472. which they've just

  473. been singing,

  474. and we sang

  475. such and such

  476. a song several

  477. times and

  478. and then God

  479. really showed

  480. up.

  481. Really?

  482. Really?

  483. Do you think

  484. you can cajole

  485. God into action

  486. by the amount

  487. you play your

  488. music or by the

  489. way you sing?

  490. That's not a

  491. service of corporate

  492. worship,

  493. that's a rock

  494. concept.

  495. What you're

  496. experiencing is

  497. just your own

  498. emotions.

  499. Our emotions

  500. are good,

  501. our emotions

  502. should be engaged

  503. in worship,

  504. but if we

  505. confuse our

  506. emotions with

  507. God's presence,

  508. if we act like

  509. we have to do

  510. something to

  511. make God

  512. appear,

  513. then that's

  514. just the same

  515. basic idea as

  516. every religion

  517. in the world,

  518. that what God

  519. does is dependent

  520. upon what we

  521. do.

  522. The Christianity

  523. and the gospel

  524. is the other

  525. way around.

  526. What God

  527. has done

  528. leads us to

  529. do what we

  530. do.

  531. See, they

  532. dishonoured God

  533. with their

  534. self-centred

  535. syncretistic

  536. worship practices,

  537. with their

  538. sexual practices,

  539. and with their

  540. social practices.

  541. They dishonoured

  542. God in all

  543. those ways.

  544. In their

  545. complacency,

  546. they didn't

  547. just dishonour

  548. God through

  549. their actions,

  550. but they

  551. despised God's

  552. gift in their

  553. attitudes.

  554. That's what

  555. Amos is talking

  556. about in

  557. verses 9-12.

  558. Can you look

  559. at those?

  560. Look at verse 9.

  561. He reminds them

  562. there that the

  563. Lord defeated

  564. their enemies.

  565. What does the

  566. Lord say?

  567. Yet it was I

  568. who destroyed

  569. the Amorite

  570. from before

  571. them.

  572. The Amorites

  573. were the big

  574. guys who

  575. they'd been very

  576. scared of as

  577. they left

  578. Egypt.

  579. Numbers 13,

  580. the spies

  581. who Moses sent

  582. out,

  583. specifically

  584. incite the

  585. Amorites as

  586. a good reason

  587. not for going

  588. into the

  589. promised land.

  590. Yet the

  591. Lord destroyed

  592. them.

  593. The Amorites

  594. whose height

  595. was like the

  596. height of the

  597. Caesars,

  598. and who

  599. were as

  600. strong as

  601. the oaks,

  602. are destroyed

  603. their fruit

  604. above and

  605. their roots

  606. beneath.

  607. They were

  608. completely

  609. wiped out

  610. by the

  611. Lord.

  612. He wiped

  613. them out

  614. because of

  615. their sin,

  616. as he

  617. promised

  618. Abraham

  619. back in

  620. Genesis 15-6.

  621. And yet

  622. now Israel

  623. were living

  624. in the

  625. Amorites

  626. land as

  627. if they

  628. just deserved

  629. it,

  630. as if they

  631. got it by

  632. right or

  633. by their

  634. own strength.

  635. They despised

  636. God's gift

  637. and their

  638. attitude to

  639. it.

  640. Not only

  641. does the

  642. Lord defeat

  643. their enemies,

  644. he delivered

  645. them from

  646. slavery.

  647. Verse 10,

  648. also it was

  649. I who

  650. brought you

  651. out of

  652. the land

  653. of Egypt.

  654. They

  655. couldn't have

  656. saved

  657. themselves as

  658. poor slaves

  659. in Egypt.

  660. It took

  661. God's

  662. great,

  663. powerful

  664. action,

  665. and strong,

  666. mighty arm

  667. to deliver

  668. them,

  669. to give

  670. them freedom,

  671. just as we

  672. cannot save

  673. ourselves from

  674. slavery to

  675. sin.

  676. The Lord

  677. also taught

  678. them dependency

  679. in the

  680. wilderness.

  681. Look at

  682. verse 10,

  683. continuing,

  684. I brought

  685. them out of

  686. the land of

  687. Egypt and

  688. led you for

  689. forty years

  690. in the

  691. wilderness,

  692. to possess

  693. the land

  694. of the

  695. Amorite.

  696. Do you

  697. remember what

  698. happened in

  699. those wilderness

  700. wandering?

  701. At every

  702. point the

  703. Lord provided

  704. for their

  705. need.

  706. We want

  707. food.

  708. He provided

  709. manna from

  710. heaven.

  711. Six days a

  712. week,

  713. fifty-two

  714. weeks of the

  715. year,

  716. forty years

  717. they were

  718. walking.

  719. He provided

  720. water from

  721. rock.

  722. He looked

  723. after them,

  724. he cared

  725. for them.

  726. The soles

  727. of their

  728. shoes didn't

  729. even wear

  730. out.

  731. What was

  732. he teaching

  733. them?

  734. He was

  735. teaching them

  736. that they

  737. were dependent

  738. upon him,

  739. not on their

  740. own power or

  741. their own

  742. strength,

  743. but on

  744. him.

  745. And how

  746. does that

  747. apply to

  748. us?

  749. Well, the

  750. Lord has

  751. defeated our

  752. enemies,

  753. hasn't he?

  754. The Lord

  755. Jesus Christ

  756. on the

  757. cross triumphed

  758. over the

  759. powers and

  760. authorities,

  761. as Paul puts

  762. it in

  763. Colossians 2

  764. 15.

  765. He defeated

  766. our enemies.

  767. He has

  768. delivered us

  769. from slavery,

  770. from this

  771. present evil

  772. age, from

  773. our slavery

  774. to sin,

  775. from the

  776. slavery of

  777. having to

  778. try and earn

  779. our way to

  780. God.

  781. Jesus has

  782. defeated all

  783. that, delivered

  784. us from

  785. that, through

  786. the cross.

  787. And he's

  788. teaching us

  789. dependency upon

  790. him.

  791. Like the

  792. Israelites in

  793. the desert, we

  794. are currently

  795. wandering in

  796. the wilderness,

  797. on our way to

  798. the promised

  799. land, on our

  800. way to the

  801. new creation

  802. that we

  803. receive when

  804. Christ returns.

  805. And in

  806. this life, in

  807. this pilgrimage

  808. through the

  809. wilderness, we

  810. are dependent

  811. upon him.

  812. He pours his

  813. spirit into

  814. our hearts

  815. when we trust

  816. in Christ,

  817. who changes

  818. us, who

  819. transforms us,

  820. who gives

  821. us gifts,

  822. to rely on

  823. him throughout

  824. our lives.

  825. So we have

  826. these same

  827. gracious gifts,

  828. but exponentially

  829. bigger than what

  830. the Israelites

  831. received.

  832. And that wasn't

  833. the end of the

  834. gifts.

  835. Look at verse

  836. 11.

  837. Now the

  838. prophets were

  839. God's gift to

  840. instruct his

  841. people, and

  842. the Nazarites

  843. were God's

  844. gift to

  845. inspire his

  846. people.

  847. The prophets

  848. declared God's

  849. word to them.

  850. That was their

  851. job, not to

  852. tell the future,

  853. but to speak

  854. God's word, to

  855. help them keep

  856. on track, to

  857. remind them of

  858. their covenant

  859. commitment, and

  860. of God's covenant

  861. commitment to

  862. them.

  863. The Nazarites, you

  864. can read about

  865. in number 6,

  866. they were people

  867. who took a

  868. vow to be

  869. separated to

  870. the Lord.

  871. And as such,

  872. they were a

  873. kind of example,

  874. an illustration,

  875. an inspiration to

  876. Israel for what

  877. their lives could

  878. be, as those who

  879. were set apart

  880. for God.

  881. But one of the

  882. key parts of the

  883. Nazarites'

  884. vows was that

  885. they wouldn't

  886. drink alcohol.

  887. You know, look

  888. at how the

  889. Israelites despised

  890. their gift.

  891. verse 12.

  892. You made the

  893. Nazarites drink

  894. wine, and you

  895. commanded the

  896. prophets, you

  897. shall not

  898. prophesy.

  899. In other words,

  900. they despised

  901. God's gracious

  902. gift, they

  903. despised the

  904. prophets, I

  905. don't want to

  906. listen to your

  907. word, God, they

  908. despised the

  909. Nazarites, I

  910. don't want to

  911. see an example,

  912. an inspiration of

  913. what a life set

  914. apart to you is

  915. like.

  916. Now how does

  917. God give us

  918. those things

  919. today?

  920. Well, he

  921. doesn't give us

  922. prophets anymore,

  923. because he's

  924. given us the

  925. final prophets.

  926. The Lord

  927. Jesus, Hebrews

    Hebrews 1:1

  928. chapter 1, verse

  929. 1, God spoke

  930. to us in the

  931. former days

  932. through the

  933. prophets, but

  934. in these last

  935. days, he's

  936. spoken to us

  937. by his

  938. Son.

  939. Not only

  940. through Jesus

  941. the word

  942. incarnate, but

  943. now through

  944. the word in

  945. scripture, the

  946. Bible that we

  947. have, and the

  948. Holy Spirit, who

  949. helps us to

  950. grasp this

  951. truth.

  952. God speaks

  953. to us.

  954. So how do

  955. we tell God's

  956. word to be

  957. silent now?

  958. Well, maybe

  959. some of you are

  960. thinking, Stuart,

  961. be quiet, we've

  962. heard enough, so

  963. you might want to

  964. be telling me to

  965. be silent.

  966. But aren't

  967. there other

  968. ways we do

  969. it?

  970. We've got God's

  971. word in our

  972. own languages.

  973. Yet isn't it

  974. true we sometimes

  975. find it easier to

  976. check out the

  977. internet, to

  978. surf on Facebook,

  979. to see what

  980. people are doing,

  981. rather than open

  982. the scriptures?

  983. Christians.

  984. The sense in which

  985. when we're doing

  986. that, we're

  987. despising God's

  988. gracious gift of

  989. his word to

  990. us.

  991. It's like telling

  992. the prophets to

  993. be quiet.

  994. What about

  995. Nazarites?

  996. He doesn't

  997. give us

  998. Nazarites

  999. today.

  1000. But can't

  1001. you think of

  1002. people who

  1003. God has brought

  1004. across your

  1005. life, who are

  1006. inspirations to

  1007. you of a life

  1008. devoted to the

  1009. Lord's service,

  1010. where you see

  1011. God's grace so

  1012. clearly?

  1013. I think of a

  1014. dear lady in

  1015. our own church,

  1016. who was a

  1017. missionary for

  1018. many years in

  1019. Thailand, who

  1020. as a single

  1021. lady, she would

  1022. love to have

  1023. had children, but

  1024. instead she's

  1025. invested her

  1026. life, she says

  1027. I've got hundreds

  1028. of grandchildren

  1029. and children now,

  1030. in the way that

  1031. she's loved and

  1032. opened her heart

  1033. to people of

  1034. every generation.

  1035. She's an

  1036. inspiration to me

  1037. of self-giving

  1038. and love for

  1039. Jesus.

  1040. Or think of

  1041. families I know

  1042. who, yes, they've

  1043. got pots and

  1044. pots of money,

  1045. but they use

  1046. that so

  1047. generously,

  1048. supporting Christian

  1049. service, opening

  1050. homes, giving

  1051. holiday homes to

  1052. people to use.

  1053. They're an

  1054. inspiration of a

  1055. life set apart

  1056. for the God.

  1057. Now what do we

  1058. do with those

  1059. people?

  1060. Do we thank God

  1061. for them?

  1062. Do we encourage

  1063. them?

1064. Or do we try and

  1065. ignore them?

  1066. Or do we even

  1067. discourage them,

1068. even if we try and

  1069. sound loving at

  1070. the point, as we

  1071. talk to them?

  1072. Oh, it's great what

  1073. you're doing, but

  1074. maybe you need to

  1075. just take it easy,

  1076. take a bit more

  1077. time for yourself,

  1078. look after yourself.

  1079. Do we sometimes

  1080. inadvertently

  1081. discourage people?

  1082. A bit like the

  1083. Israelites saying

  1084. to the Nazarites,

  1085. go have a drink,

  1086. relax, don't take

  1087. everything too

  1088. seriously.

  1089. Well, these are

  1090. God's gracious

  1091. gifts.

  1092. Do we despise

  1093. them in our

  1094. attitudes, or are

  1095. we grateful for

  1096. them, as the

  1097. Israelites were

  1098. not?

  1099. Well, in their

  1100. complacency, they

  1101. dishonoured God by

  1102. their actions, they

  1103. despised God's

  1104. gifts through their

  1105. attitudes.

  1106. So what was going

  1107. to happen to

  1108. them?

  1109. Well, verse 13

  1110. to 16, let's

  1111. prepare to be

  1112. destroyed by God's

  1113. judgment.

  1114. Look at verse

  1115. 13.

  1116. Behold, I will

  1117. press you down in

  1118. your place, as a

  1119. cart full of

  1120. sheaves presses

  1121. down.

  1122. The images of a

  1123. loaded cart at

  1124. harvest time, pressing

  1125. down on the ground.

  1126. Israel are going to

  1127. be pressed down by

  1128. God's wrath, his

  1129. punishment against

  1130. them for the way

  1131. they have treated

  1132. him and broken

  1133. their covenant

  1134. promises.

  1135. And who's going to

  1136. escape the

  1137. squashing?

  1138. Who's going to

  1139. escape God's

  1140. judgment?

  1141. Verse 14.

  1142. Flight shall

  1143. perish from the

  1144. swift, the

  1145. strong shall not

  1146. retain his

  1147. strength, nor

  1148. shall the mighty

  1149. save his life.

  1150. Usain Bolt cannot

  1151. outrun it, the

  1152. world's strongest

  1153. man cannot stand

  1154. against it, the

  1155. world's greatest

  1156. survival expert and

  1157. brave man, be it

  1158. Bear Grylls or some

  1159. die from the SAS,

1160. will not be able to

  1161. outlast it.

  1162. It goes on.

  1163. He who handles the

  1164. boat shall not

  1165. stand, he who is

  1166. swift of foot shall

  1167. not save himself, nor

  1168. shall he who rides

  1169. the horse save his

  1170. life.

  1171. No weapon can

  1172. stave off God's

  1173. wrath.

  1174. No bravery, no

  1175. military power.

  1176. Verse 16.

  1177. And he who is

  1178. stout of heart among

  1179. the mighty shall

  1180. flee away naked in

  1181. that day, declares

  1182. the Lord.

  1183. Do you hear what

  1184. God is saying?

  1185. You've been

  1186. complacent, you've

  1187. dishonoured my

  1188. character, you

  1189. despised my

  1190. gifts, after all

  1191. I've done for

  1192. you.

  1193. No one is going

  1194. to be able to

  1195. stand when I

  1196. act in anger.

  1197. But sure

  1198. enough, 722

  1199. BC, the

  1200. Assyrians came

  1201. in and destroyed

  1202. Samaria, wiped

  1203. out Israel.

  1204. The punishment

  1205. they thought could

  1206. never come came.

  1207. Now it's easy

  1208. isn't it for us

  1209. to say, well

  1210. hang on, we're

  1211. under the new

  1212. covenant now, we're

  1213. not under the law

  1214. like these people

  1215. were.

  1216. Surely it's

  1217. different for us

  1218. Christians.

  1219. Well, it's

  1220. different in the

  1221. grace we have

  1222. received is even

  1223. greater, the

  1224. rescue we've

  1225. received, the

  1226. deliverance, the

  1227. gifts, all even

  1228. greater through

  1229. Jesus.

  1230. So our

  1231. responsibility to

  1232. accept and remain

  1233. in those is

  1234. greater.

  1235. Hear these words

  1236. of Jesus, you

  1237. might want to

  1238. turn if you like

  1239. to John chapter

    John 15 chapter mention

  1240. 15 in your

  1241. Bibles as we

  1242. get near the end.

  1243. What does

  1244. Jesus say?

  1245. John chapter

    John 15:1

  1246. 15 verse 1, I

  1247. am the true

  1248. vine.

  1249. He's picking up

  1250. language from

  1251. Jeremiah chapter

    Jeremiah 2 chapter mention

  1252. 2, Jesus

  1253. is saying, I'm

  1254. the true Israel.

  1255. I'm what Israel

  1256. was supposed to

  1257. be.

  1258. You, my

  1259. father is the

  1260. vine dresser.

  1261. And verse 5, I'm

  1262. the vine, you

  1263. are the branches.

  1264. You are the

  1265. branches.

  1266. If we trust in

  1267. Christ, we are

  1268. branches in him,

  1269. rooted in him,

  1270. built into him.

  1271. What does Jesus

1272. go on to say in

  1273. verse 5 of John

  1274. 15?

  1275. I'm the vine, you

  1276. are the branches.

  1277. Whoever abides in

1278. me and I in him,

  1279. here it is that

  1280. bears much fruit.

  1281. For apart from me

  1282. you can do

  1283. nothing.

  1284. How do we

  1285. ensure that we

  1286. are truly forgiven?

  1287. How do we

  1288. ensure that in our

  1289. actions we don't

  1290. dishonour God?

  1291. How do we

  1292. ensure that in

  1293. our attitudes we

  1294. don't despise God's

  1295. gracious gifts?

  1296. We remain in

  1297. Jesus.

  1298. We remain in

  1299. Jesus.

  1300. We have his

  1301. words in him.

  1302. We trust in him.

  1303. We do not move

  1304. from that.

  1305. We remember his

  1306. gracious promise that

  1307. he will never turn

  1308. away anyone who

  1309. calls on him.

  1310. We remember why he

  1311. came.

1312. The son of man did

  1313. not come to

  1314. condemn the world,

  1315. but to save the

  1316. world.

  1317. We remain in

  1318. Jesus.

  1319. And as we trust

  1320. in him, as we

  1321. remain in him,

  1322. so we bear

  1323. fruit, so we

  1324. are transformed.

  1325. So we do

  1326. honour God with

  1327. our lives and

  1328. are fit for

  1329. purpose to be a

  1330. kingdom of priests

  1331. and a holy

  1332. nation.

  1333. But, listen to

  1334. how Jesus goes

  1335. on.

  1336. Go back to

  1337. verse 2.

  1338. Every branch

  1339. of mine that

  1340. does not bear

  1341. fruit, he, the

  1342. Father, takes

  1343. away.

  1344. Every branch

  1345. that does not

  1346. bear fruit, he,

  1347. the Father, takes

  1348. away.

  1349. Or verse 6.

  1350. If anyone does

1351. not abide in me, he

1352. is thrown away like a

  1353. branch and withers.

  1354. And the branches are

  1355. gathered, thrown into

  1356. fire, and burned.

1357. So that's the choice we

  1358. face, isn't it?

  1359. Do we abide in

  1360. Jesus for a life

  1361. where he works his

  1362. fruit through us, so

  1363. that we do honour

1364. God in our actions, we

1365. do honour him in our

  1366. attitude, so that we

  1367. can be, fulfil the

  1368. purpose for which he

1369. saved us, to be a

  1370. kingdom of priests,

  1371. showing the world his

  1372. greatness.

1373. Or do we fail to keep

  1374. holding on to the

  1375. gospel, fail to keep

1376. trusting in Jesus, fail to

  1377. have his words remain

  1378. in us.

  1379. In which case, what

  1380. happens?

  1381. The branches are cut

  1382. off and thrown into

  1383. the fire.

  1384. What happened to

1385. Israel, it says, is a

1386. warning to all of us,

  1387. not to be complacent,

1388. not to accept really the

  1389. privileges of being

  1390. God's people, but also

  1391. remember the purpose.

  1392. Not just to remember

1393. that God is love, but

1394. to remember that he is

  1395. light.

1396. That by his grace we

  1397. might bear fruit to

  1398. him and be the

  1399. kingdom of priests, the

  1400. holy nation, that he

1401. called us to be, that he

  1402. might declare his

  1403. excellencies in a needy,

  1404. broken world.

  1405. Let's pray.
