  1. Now what you have this morning is a story from Jesus about a man who goes to hell.

  2. And if there's one thing worse, there's something worse than going to hell, here it is.

  3. It is being certain that you're going to heaven and ending up in hell.

  4. And the story ends with this man absolutely desperate to get a warning back to his family.

  5. And what he wants to say to his family is the main point of the passage, I think.

  6. Here is what Jesus wants to say to us this morning.

  7. And the man wants to say to his family, people like us go to hell.

  8. People like us go to hell.

  9. And he begs for the chance to tell his five brothers, people like us go to hell.

  10. Luke's gospel as we've studied it is full of surprises.

  11. It's full of surprises about who is going to heaven and about who is not.

  12. There's people who you think they've got no hope at all, and yet they find themselves in.

  13. And there's people who you think are going to heaven, and they find themselves out.

  14. And that's what we've got today.

  15. We've got this opposites, this great reversal.

  16. Jesus with his coming is not saying, with my coming everybody's going to heaven.

  17. He's not saying that.

  18. He's saying there's going to be surprises in both clues, the queue going up and the queue going down.

  19. And chapter 15 is the heart of these chapters, the heart of this section.

  20. And in chapter 15 we saw that heaven is for people who repent.

  21. Heaven is for people who say sorry.

  22. Heaven is for people who turn away from their sin and turn to God.

  23. And hell is for people who do not repent.

  24. Hell is for relatively good people and relatively bad people who repent.

  25. Hell is for people relatively good, relatively bad, who do not repent.

  26. And so we here have one of these great shocks.

  27. And it is the story of a made up man.

  28. It's a made up story.

  29. It's a made up story with an entirely factual warning.

  30. To the group of men that Jesus meets in verse 14.

  31. Can you see them?

  32. The Pharisees.

  33. It's a warning to those people.

  34. To people like them.

  35. To people like them.

  36. And people like him go to hell.

  37. And I think if you're going to go on listening, I've got to say a little bit about hell, haven't I?

  38. And we all know there have been preachers.

  39. Not really today.

  40. But there have been preachers, particularly 200 years ago, who exaggerated about hell.

  41. And they tried to frighten people emotionally.

  42. With hell, fire, preaching.

  43. And because of that, people are really wary, aren't they?

  44. They are very, very wary.

  45. Maybe you are.

  46. Of listening to a preacher talk about hell.

  47. And what's happened is churches have stopped talking about it entirely.

  48. But when you come to a passage like the end of Luke 16, what I've got to do, and what you've got to do, is ask yourself, what is my job?

  49. Okay?

  50. Do I work for you, as the congregation?

  51. And do I have an obligation to tell my clients what it is they want to hear?

  52. Or do I work for the Lord Jesus?

  53. And I have an obligation to tell you what my master wants you to hear.

  54. Which one is it?

  55. Jesus taught about hell carefully.

  56. He taught about hell often.

  57. And he taught about hell consistently.

  58. And it was a very important part of his message.

  59. And the message of Jesus loses its coherence if you take the doctrine of hell out of it.

  60. And you can see actually in the passage, Jesus is not like one of those hellfire preachers shouting his head off.

  61. Jesus is not trying to whip up emotions or exaggerate.

  62. He's not doing that.

  63. He does twice use the word torment.

  64. And he twice uses the word anguish.

  65. But there are no descriptions, are there, of devils with pitchforks prancing around.

  66. No sadomasochistic descriptions of torture.

  67. There's none of that.

  68. He just thinks hell is a real place.

  69. And he thinks that physically and mentally it is a dreadful place.

  70. And his warning is frightening.

  71. But he wants your brain to be frightened, not just your emotions.

  72. So that you'll do something about it.

  73. And I think we also need to say here that what Jesus says about hell here is a story.

  74. It is a story that has been made up.

  75. And I think that means that we need to be very careful about taking any of the details in Luke 16 literally.

  76. So let me give you an example.

  77. For example, the rest of the Bible doesn't seem likely that people in hell will be having conversations with people in heaven across the divide.

  78. That doesn't seem likely.

  79. Like the rich man has a conversation with Abraham.

  80. It doesn't seem that is the way that things will be.

  81. From the rest of the Bible.

  82. But Jesus uses it in this story to make a point.

  83. And his point is this.

  84. What would somebody in hell want to say?

  85. What would Abraham want to say back to him?

  86. So let's listen in on this conversation.

  87. So he tells this story about a made up person in picture language.

  88. In order to deliver to you and me a real warning about a real place to real people.

  89. And the warning is this.

  90. People like you go to hell.

  91. And before writing this off as all fashionable or objectionable or horrific.

  92. I think we better be sure that Jesus really doesn't know what he's talking about.

  93. So let's have a look at these three main points.

  94. The first one is going to be the longest.

  95. It will feel like it goes on forever.

  96. But the other two are quicker.

  97. The first point is this.

  98. You cannot write your own ticket in advance.

  99. You cannot write your own ticket to heaven in advance.

  100. The people who think they go to heaven are there in verse 14.

  101. Can you just look at that?

  102. Verse 14.

  103. And Jesus describes them in verse 15 which is the key verse.

  104. You are those who justify yourselves before men.

  105. That in five or six words is why they will be shocked when they find themselves in hell.

  106. It's because they think they've got the ticket.

  107. They think they've got their ticket in their back pocket.

  108. But Jesus says that ticket that you have is written yourself.

  109. And it will not work.

  110. You see to justify yourself before men is to get just about everything in life that is important wrong.

  111. So the focus on human beings and what they think as the big thing is wrong.

  112. Whose opinion matters more to you this morning?

  113. Human beings?

  114. Or should it be God?

  115. The Pharisees have got this life sorted.

  116. They are really good at looking good.

  117. They're really good at looking good where people can see them.

  118. But what people think does matter, does it?

  119. It doesn't matter if all your friends think you're going to heaven.

  120. Because God sees them as well, doesn't he?

  121. Look at verse 15.

  122. God sees their hearts.

  123. God knows their heart.

  124. And what God sees matters more.

  125. And this idea that you can justify yourself.

  126. Well that's wrong as well.

  127. Justifying is something that a judge does.

  128. And I think it comes built into every human being that we are good at justifying ourselves.

  129. I cycle.

  130. I might not cycle very much this winter.

  131. But when a cyclist goes into a white van or into a car and there's an accident.

  132. You've seen it on the X-Bridge.

  133. It happens kind of every five minutes.

  134. But there's a cyclist goes in and the cyclist falls off.

  135. And there's the aftermath.

  136. The cyclist gets up on the road.

  137. His clothes are ripped.

  138. The bike is slightly mangled.

  139. And everybody stands there and looks around.

  140. And all the parties justify themselves.

  141. I'm a cyclist.

  142. All cyclists justify themselves.

  143. We know that we're in the right.

  144. No matter what has happened.

  145. No matter if we've jumped a red light.

  146. The cyclist is always in the right.

  147. But actually.

  148. Deep inside.

  149. If you took the name of the cyclist.

  150. Or the white van driver.

  151. And you set up a meeting with a judge.

  152. They will know.

  153. They will know.

  154. That cyclist will know who jumped the red light.

  155. That things will not go so well.

  156. The same thing is here.

  157. It doesn't matter whether you can justify yourself.

  158. What matters is whether the judge will justify you.

  159. It doesn't matter whether you think you're in the right.

  160. It doesn't matter whether you think you're in the right.

  161. What matters is what God thinks.

  162. What God will say.

  163. So let's say next Saturday you want to go and watch England vs Wales at Tokenham.

  164. And you wish that you had tickets.

  165. It will not be okay, will it?

  166. To take out an A4 from your pad.

  167. And write on it.

  168. Four seats near the halfway line.

  169. Pitch side.

  170. Signed Levy.

  171. That's not going to work, is it?

  172. That will not do.

  173. You turn out at Tokenham next Saturday.

  174. You hand in the A4 pad.

  175. That A4 sheet.

  176. And security will be tight.

  177. They'll tell you to clear off.

  178. And they won't let you in.

  179. Now that is obvious, isn't it?

  180. It's not obvious.

  181. So why is it that you think that it's so easy to write tickets for heaven?

  182. That it will be okay.

  183. That you've done them yourself at home and they will let you in.

  184. I would not, and neither would you, let somebody into their house with an admission slip signed by themselves.

  185. You wouldn't.

  186. The Queen certainly would not let anyone into her house.

  187. With an admission slip signed by themselves.

  188. If you wrote a ticket and said, I'm allowed in, I've written Levy on it.

  189. Would that be alright?

  190. Why is it that we think God would, why is it we think that God is so easily fooled by self-justification?

  191. I'm in the right.

  192. It fools men.

  193. But look at verse 15 again.

  194. God has got technology that none of your friends do.

  195. God knows your heart.

  196. And Jesus gives them two specific areas to examine.

  197. He wants them to shift from self-confidence so that they can go to heaven instead.

  198. The two areas are what you do with your money, which is the story of Rich Man and Lazarus.

  199. And what you do with the opposite sex, which is why that verse is there in the middle of Luke 16.

  200. The Pharisees are moralists.

  201. They self-justify because they think they're good enough to go to heaven.

  202. They've done enough to get to heaven.

  203. They don't want any bad people in there.

  204. And that is why they're so cross, aren't they, in chapter 15 and verse 2.

  205. Just look there.

  206. They grumble.

  207. They complain.

  208. They're angry.

  209. And they say, this man receives sinners and eats with them.

  210. Jesus, stop letting all these bad people in.

  211. We are the ones that are good enough.

  212. We are the ones that are working hard.

  213. These people, they don't, they shouldn't be in.

  214. But also, the Pharisees don't want the pass mark raised even higher.

  215. They don't want that.

  216. They don't want the standard raised higher either.

  217. That is why they're so cross in chapter 16 and verse 14.

  218. Because they have a problem.

  219. Jesus has just said, doesn't he, the end of verse 13,

  220. you cannot love God on money.

  221. But they have a problem because in verse 14,

  222. the Pharisees were lovers of money.

  223. And they think loving money, that's alright.

  224. Don't be too strict, Jesus.

  225. Jesus just said, it's only people who don't love money who get into heaven.

  226. And they say, that's too high.

  227. Everybody loves money, Jesus.

  228. Jesus, you're just you turning.

  229. You're you turning all the time.

  230. You were too soft on morals in chapter 15.

  231. And now you've gone too hard in chapter 16.

  232. Stop it with the U-turn in.

  233. Get a grip and tell us, Jesus, what is really going on.

  234. But Jesus hasn't gone soft on morals at all.

  235. He hasn't done a U-turn.

  236. What Jesus is teaching is,

  237. forgiveness always goes along with high moral standards.

  238. And moralism has always gone along with low moral standards.

  239. So if you think men will get to heaven if they get over the pass mark,

  240. what you do is the pressure is always on to lower the pass mark.

  241. If that's what you think,

  242. I'll get into heaven if I reach this certain standard,

  243. well, you'll always want to lower the standards.

  244. If it's about moralism,

  245. how good we are,

  246. then we need to push it down.

  247. So that you can jump over it and get in.

  248. But if you think that people only get into heaven

  249. because they're forgiven,

  250. that's the only way in,

  251. then you can let anybody in.

  252. And you can keep the pass mark where it belongs.

  253. Right up at the top.

  254. With the morals that God thinks are important.

  255. And that is what verses 16 and 17 are all about.

  256. Jesus says,

  257. yes, you can now get to heaven.

  258. Without keeping the law and the prophets.

  259. Since John the Baptist came

  260. and he announced his message of repentance

  261. and forgiveness for sins,

  262. it's been clear that any sinful man or woman

  263. can force their way in.

  264. The Pharisees taught wrongly, didn't they?

  265. That it's keeping the law.

  266. But Jesus says,

  267. you can get to heaven by being forgiven.

  268. But you cannot self-justify

  269. keeping every single last thought of the law.

  270. If you want to be...

  271. If you want...

  272. If you want something that you've made yourself.

  273. If you think it is by keeping the law,

  274. you've got to keep the whole law.

  275. And the good news of the kingdom of God

  276. is that it is for people who want to be forgiven.

  277. If you want to write your own ticket

  278. and say that you are good enough,

  279. well then you've got to keep the whole law.

  280. So the question is,

  281. how have you treated the members of the opposite sex?

  282. And so you come to verse 18.

  283. If you want to know what Jesus says more in detail

  284. about divorce,

  285. you go to Mark 10.

  286. You'll chat with me later about that.

  287. But in Mark 10 it is expanded.

  288. And the Pharisees taught,

  289. well actually you don't need to be married for life.

  290. Being married for life is just too hard.

  291. You can keep away from just grossly mistreating your wife.

  292. If you're not happy with the woman that you're married to anymore,

  293. by all means divorce her,

  294. but do it legally

  295. and you're fine.

  296. Sort the paperwork out.

  297. There's the pass mark.

  298. Jesus says,

  299. well okay,

  300. you might have got the paperwork right,

  301. but you've forgotten the one important thing,

  302. that God can see your heart.

  303. And in Mark 10 he reminds them of what the divorce laws were.

  304. And divorce laws are only needed

  305. because sinful people cannot live together with their problems.

  306. When you put two sinful people together,

  307. there are going to be problems,

  308. always.

  309. And sometimes those problems

  310. mean that people need a way out.

  311. And it's good to have a legal route

  312. that protects the wife's interest when that happens.

  313. It means she doesn't end up destitute

  314. and without property

  315. and without the support of her family.

  316. But if you've gone down that route of divorce,

  317. the one thing that you know for certain,

  318. and I think everybody would agree with this,

  319. is that you are a sinner.

  320. I don't say that from a self-righteous point of view.

  321. Divorce is for sinful people.

  322. And we are all sinful people, aren't we?

  323. Every single one of us.

  324. And you may end up there.

  325. But you cannot come out at the end of that route

  326. and say,

  327. you cannot, can you?

  328. Those of you who struggled with this,

  329. you cannot come out at the end of that route

  330. and say, well I'm a very, very good person.

  331. It is redeemable.

  332. To know that you're a sinner

  333. if you can be forgiven.

  334. But if your whole game

  335. is about saying and proving

  336. I've never done anything wrong,

  337. then the Pharisees with their easy divorce laws

  338. are just kidding themselves.

  339. People like you, he says,

  340. who keep the rules on the inside,

  341. on the outside,

  342. who have all the right paperwork,

  343. go to hell.

  344. And then verses 19 to 25,

  345. he says, how do you use your money?

  346. And they love money.

  347. And they think that you can love money

  348. and be okay with God.

  349. And Jesus tells them a story

  350. that is designed to make them wince.

  351. There was a rich man,

  352. verse 19,

  353. can you see him?

  354. And he was very rich.

  355. His clothes and his gait

  356. would have given that away

  357. to the original hearers.

  358. But even if we miss those feasts,

  359. even if we miss those details,

  360. the way that he eats

  361. gives it away.

  362. He eats sumptuously

  363. every day.

  364. It's ten course meals

  365. every evening.

  366. This man is loaded.

  367. He has the staff,

  368. he has the building,

  369. he has the resources

  370. to feast sumptuously

  371. every day.

  372. And he is meant to be

  373. an example of what it means

  374. to be a lover of money.

  375. Somebody who the Pharisees

  376. could really look up to.

  377. Their culture made the assumption

  378. that there are lots of cultures

  379. who are around the world.

  380. But if somebody has cash,

  381. God must like them.

  382. And God must bless them.

  383. So this man is rich.

  384. He and his family,

  385. they all assume

  386. that they have a place in heaven.

  387. But people like you,

  388. which Jesus says,

  389. who enjoy their money

  390. without any obvious corruption

  391. or fraud,

  392. go to hell.

  393. And in his case,

  394. it actually takes the journey

  395. to hell

  396. before he realises

  397. God sees his heart.

  398. So there he is

  399. in verse 23,

  400. in hell.

  401. And that is a surprise to him.

  402. But even more than that,

  403. when he lifts up his eyes,

  404. he sees Abraham afar off

  405. and Lazarus at his side,

  406. which is an even far

  407. greater surprise.

  408. That is the beggar

  409. who used to live

  410. at my gate,

  411. he says.

  412. And he assumes,

  413. doesn't he,

  414. he's got some

  415. angle,

  416. some capital

  417. to spend.

  418. So he asks Lazarus

  419. to do him a favour.

  420. And that is why in verse 25,

  421. Abraham opens up his heart.

  422. But Abraham said,

  423. child,

  424. remember that you

  425. in your lifetime

  426. received your good things

  427. and Lazarus

  428. in like manner

  429. bad things.

  430. But now he's comforted

  431. here

  432. and you are in anguish.

  433. All your life

  434. good things,

  435. all his life

  436. bad things.

  437. And now God

  438. has reversed the accounts.

  439. And that isn't saying to you

  440. that having money

  441. is a sin,

  442. it's not.

  443. But it is throwing

  444. the light back

  445. onto what this man

  446. did with his money

  447. when he was alive.

  448. All God has done

  449. is swap the places around.

  450. You never had a problem

  451. with money

  452. all those years

  453. that you were alive

  454. with there being

  455. one person in comfort

  456. eating very well

  457. and then another person

  458. kind of six pieces

  459. away from you

  460. who had nothing.

  461. You had no problem

  462. with that rich man.

  463. And all that has happened

  464. is the great reversal.

  465. And if you want to

  466. justify yourself

  467. using the law

  468. well you better make sure

  469. that you've read

  470. all of it rich man.

  471. It's the same point

  472. as divorce.

  473. You better make sure

  474. that you've read

  475. the bits about hospitality.

  476. That you've loved

  477. your neighbours yourself.

  478. You better have read

  479. the bits about

  480. treating and caring

  481. for the sick

  482. and the needy

  483. and the poor.

  484. This rich man's

  485. life

  486. it wouldn't be

  487. in a headline

  488. about bankers

  489. or something

  490. more scandalous

  491. than that.

  492. It wouldn't be that.

  493. He isn't going to

  494. have done a deal

  495. on his tax.

  496. This rich man

  497. may have even

  498. had a wing

  499. of a local hospital

  500. named after him.

  501. He may have devoted

  502. lots of time and money

  503. to lots of charitable

  504. things that people

  505. approved of

  506. but every day

  507. he sat down

  508. in purple

  509. while a man

  510. sat at his gates

  511. closed with sores.

  512. Every day

  513. he sat down

  514. to stuff his belly

  515. and the poor beggar

  516. shuddered with

  517. longing

  518. to even have

  519. the crumbs

  520. that fell from

  521. his table.

  522. And he took

  523. notice of Lazarus.

  524. He never sent

  525. in anything.

  526. He even allowed

  527. the wild sweet dogs

  528. to go after his

  529. injuries and lick

  530. his sores.

  531. God sees your heart.

  532. And so you can

  533. fool your family

  534. or your neighbours

  535. but they are the

  536. ones who walk

  537. over Lazarus

  538. on the way

  539. to your party.

  540. God can see

  541. what you think

  542. about money.

  543. And God can see

  544. in what ways

  545. you are using it

  546. to help someone

  547. in need.

  548. Now I think

  549. it is easy

  550. to apply this

  551. today.

  552. Don't get

  553. tied up in detail

  554. as I have

  555. for most of the week.

  556. Verse 18

  557. is not Jesus'

  558. final word

  559. on divorce.

  560. Verse 25

  561. is not Jesus'

  562. last word

  563. on giving.

  564. The big point

  565. is this.

  566. That people

  567. who think

  568. they have

  569. their own

  570. ticket written

  571. because they

  572. are good enough

  573. have no idea

  574. how far short

  575. of God's

  576. standard they fall.

  577. Because God

  578. sees the heart.

  579. Everything

  580. can be forgiven.

  581. Relationship

  582. breakdown

  583. and meltdown

  584. divorce

  585. can be forgiven.

  586. Greediness

  587. can be forgiven.

  588. Callousness

  589. hard heartedness

  590. can be forgiven.

  591. But if you think

  592. you are good enough

  593. you are never

  594. going to ask.

  595. You are never

  596. going to ask.

  597. And that applies

  598. to modern

  599. moralists

  600. doesn't it?

  601. Let's try and

  602. tease this out.

  603. Both the

  604. religious kind

  605. and the

  606. secular kind.

  607. The religious

  608. kind

  609. are shrinking

  610. aren't they?

  611. There aren't

  612. so many of them

  613. around anymore

  614. I want to argue.

  615. The religious

  616. kind are shrinking.

  617. You go to church

  618. on Sunday

  619. you have very

  620. very strong

  621. opinions on

  622. pretty much

  623. everything.

  624. There is very

  625. very clear

  626. blue water

  627. between you

  628. and sinners.

  629. You are a cut

  630. above the

  631. average church

  632. member

  633. let alone

  634. anyone else.

  635. You are one

  636. of the good

  637. people who

  638. is balanced.

  639. but unless

  640. you are

  641. somebody

  642. seeking

  643. forgiveness

  644. by repenting

  645. then Jesus

  646. has very

  647. hard questions

  648. to ask

  649. your heart

  650. and mine.

  651. The secular

  652. moralist

  653. is beginning

  654. to take

  655. the place

  656. of the

  657. religious

  658. moralist

  659. in our

  660. society.

  661. So just

  662. think who

  663. would be

  664. invited to

  665. this kind

  666. of rich

  667. man's

  668. dinner

  669. party

  670. today.

  671. Who would

  672. be at the

  673. dinner party

  674. with him?

  675. They'd be

  676. the rich

  677. people

  678. but they'd

  679. be the

  680. good rich

  681. people

  682. with the

  683. right opinions

  684. on everything.

  685. They'd have

  686. the right

  687. opinions on

  688. the agenda

  689. that counts

  690. today.

  691. Good people

  692. who hit

  693. all the

  694. right moral

  695. buttons of

  696. their culture.

  697. They wouldn't

  698. put it so

  699. boldly as to

  700. say well you

  701. should let me

  702. into heaven

  703. because I

  704. recycle.

  705. Or you

  706. should let

  707. me into

  708. heaven because

  709. I've got the

  710. right opinion

  711. on all the

  712. equality

  713. agendas.

  714. I believe

  715. in human

  716. rights.

  717. But I

  718. want to say

  719. it is the

  720. same

  721. outward

  722. man

  723. focused

  724. behaviour

  725. religion

  726. actually

  727. as the

  728. people

  729. Jesus

  730. meant.

  731. And Jesus

  732. says to us

  733. this morning

  734. but he also

  735. says to the

  736. cultural

  737. moralists of

  738. our day

  739. what do you

  740. do with

  741. your money?

  742. And how do

  743. you treat

  744. the opposite

  745. sex?

  746. God sees

  747. your heart.

  748. So you

  749. cannot write

  750. your own

  751. ticket.

  752. That's the

  753. second thing

  754. and the

  755. longest

  756. thing.

  757. The

  758. second

  759. thing

  760. is this

  761. you

  762. cannot

  763. do

  764. deals

  765. later.

  766. Now I

  767. think you've

  768. got to

  769. reserve

  770. some

  771. admiration

  772. for the

  773. rich

  774. man.

  775. He's

  776. really

  777. tenacious.

  778. He's

  779. had a

  780. very

  781. bad

  782. day

  783. isn't

  784. he?

  785. He dies

  786. he's

  787. buried

  788. and then

  789. contrary

  790. to all

  791. his

  792. expectations

  793. he wakes

  794. up to

  795. find

  796. himself

  797. in

  798. hell.

  799. It's

  800. a

  801. very

  802. bad

  803. day.

  804. But

  805. look at

  806. him.

  807. He's

  808. not lost

  809. the ability

  810. to cut a

  811. deal

  812. has he?

  813. He's

  814. a

  815. trader.

  816. He could

  817. work in

  818. the city

  819. and he

  820. has three

  821. separate

  822. goals

  823. at doing

  824. a deal

  825. with

  826. Abraham.

  827. He will

  828. not give

  829. up.

  830. So he

  831. uses every

  832. single

  833. bit of

  834. negotiating

  835. skill

  836. he's

  837. got.

  838. Verse

  839. 23

  840. he's

  841. dead

  842. he's

  843. in

  844. hell

  845. he sees

  846. Lazarus

  847. and

  848. generally

  849. he thinks

  850. bingo.

  851. Here is

  852. somebody

  853. that I

  854. know

  855. on the

  856. inside.

  857. In

  858. fact

  859. there's

  860. two

  861. people

  862. verse

  863. 24

  864. he

  865. scratches

  866. his

  867. link

  868. to

  869. Abraham

  870. doesn't

  871. he?

  872. So what

  873. we've

  874. got

  875. is

  876. somebody

  877. who used

  878. to live

  879. on my

  880. street

  881. and

  882. somebody

  883. I'm

  884. descended

  885. from

  886. and he

  887. thinks

  888. I've

  889. got a

  890. way out

  891. there must

  892. be some

  893. kind of

  894. deal we

  895. can do

  896. is that

  897. how we

  898. negotiate

  899. Abraham

  900. and he

  901. asks the

  902. poor man

  903. Lazarus

  904. to do

  905. something

  906. because in

  907. his world

  908. that's the

  909. way it's

  910. always been

  911. isn't it?

  912. And Lazarus

  913. has always

  914. longed for a

  915. tiny scrap

  916. of food

  917. but the

  918. rich man

  919. now longs

  920. for a

  921. tiny drop

  922. of water

  923. so surely

  924. we can

  925. do a

  926. deal

  927. Abraham

  928. there are

  929. many many

  930. people out

  931. there

  932. maybe you

  933. you're very

  934. used to

  935. getting your

  936. own way

  937. in life

  938. you pull

  939. every string

  940. you're willing

  941. to do any

  942. deal you want

  943. to get what

  944. you want

  945. but men and

  946. women who are

  947. self made in

  948. life tend to

  949. assume that it's

  950. going to work

  951. like that after

  952. death

  953. there's always

  954. been a deal

  955. to be done

  956. I've always

  957. been able to

  958. do so

  959. and God

  960. will be the

  961. same

  962. so look at

  963. verse 26

  964. Abraham says

  965. and besides

  966. all this

  967. between us

  968. and you

  969. a great

  970. chasm has

  971. been fixed

  972. in order

  973. that those

  974. who would

  975. pass from

  976. here to

  977. you

  978. may not

  979. do so

  980. and none

  981. may cross

  982. from there

  983. to us

  984. it's too

  985. late

  986. there are

  987. no deals

  988. and if you

  989. are without

  990. forgiveness

  991. and repentance

  992. in this life

  993. then you'll

  994. be without

  995. them in the

  996. next life

  997. and by the

  998. time you

  999. meet your

  1000. maker

  1001. it will

  1002. be too

  1003. late

  1004. and thinking

  1005. about this

  1006. passage

  1007. I wonder

  1008. if any

  1009. of the

  1010. people

  1011. that I

  1012. count as

  1013. my friends

  1014. believe that

  1015. quite a lot

  1016. of my

  1017. friends believe

  1018. in God

  1019. but none

  1020. of them

  1021. show any

  1022. urgency

  1023. some of

  1024. them are

  1025. interested in

  1026. what happens

  1027. after they

  1028. die

  1029. but none

  1030. of them

  1031. show any

  1032. urgency

  1033. about what

  1034. will happen

  1035. when they

  1036. die

  1037. it's for

  1038. some of

  1039. them

  1040. they've

  1041. got a

  1042. point one

  1043. problem

  1044. they think

  1045. they're good

  1046. enough

  1047. that they'll

  1048. be fine

  1049. they think

  1050. their hearts

  1051. will stay

  1052. secret

  1053. and all the

  1054. things that's

  1055. in their

  1056. hearts will

  1057. stay secret

  1058. but for most

  1059. of them I

  1060. think it's a

  1061. point two

  1062. problem

  1063. death will be

  1064. something that

  1065. you'll face

  1066. when you come

  1067. to it

  1068. death is a

  1069. great adventure

  1070. as somebody

  1071. once said to

  1072. me in an

  1073. intensive care

  1074. ward

  1075. it's not just

  1076. young people

  1077. is it that

  1078. think they've

  1079. got a long

  1080. time until

  1081. they die

  1082. and I

  1083. think most

  1084. of us

  1085. think

  1086. well once

  1087. we're dead

  1088. there'll be a

  1089. lot of

  1090. time to

  1091. sort it

  1092. out afterwards

  1093. there'll be

  1094. a way to

  1095. cut a deal

  1096. there'll be a

  1097. second chance

  1098. but verse 26

  1099. says to you

  1100. no

  1101. there's a

  1102. great chasm

  1103. that is fixed

  1104. and specifically

  1105. there will be

  1106. no travel

  1107. from heaven

  1108. to hell

  1109. not even

  1110. with a drop

  1111. of water

  1112. and there will

  1113. be certainly

  1114. no travel

  1115. from hell

  1116. to heaven

  1117. and none

  1118. from heaven

  1119. to hell

  1120. it is the

  1121. fact that

  1122. we will

  1123. all die

  1124. and for

  1125. us our

  1126. time is

  1127. running out

  1128. that makes

  1129. this urgent

  1130. it makes it

  1131. urgent to

  1132. get forgiveness

  1133. from Jesus

  1134. and that should

  1135. be the most

  1136. urgent thing

  1137. that we can

  1138. think of

  1139. you cannot

  1140. cut a deal

  1141. all that

  1142. matters is

  1143. whether you've

  1144. repented in

  1145. life or not

  1146. that is what

  1147. will matter

  1148. riches in

  1149. life may be

  1150. one reason

  1151. why it's

  1152. such a

  1153. surprise for

  1154. this group

  1155. do you see

  1156. they've been

  1157. able to do

  1158. deals all

  1159. their life

  1160. and if that

  1161. is you

  1162. then you're

  1163. more likely

  1164. to assume

  1165. that you're

  1166. going to be

  1167. able to do

  1168. a deal

  1169. in the

  1170. future

  1171. the Christian

  1172. gospel is

  1173. all about

  1174. second chances

  1175. isn't it

  1176. wonderfully it

  1177. is

  1178. isn't it

  1179. and that is

  1180. why there

  1181. is forgiveness

  1182. that's why

  1183. people like

  1184. the lost

  1185. son

  1186. who stuffed

  1187. up life

  1188. completely

  1189. will be

  1190. in heaven

  1191. and I

  1192. suppose you

  1193. could imagine

  1194. a world

  1195. where there

  1196. goes on

  1197. being second

  1198. chances and

  1199. third chances

  1200. and fourth

  1201. chances after

  1202. you've died

  1203. but Jesus

  1204. says very

  1205. very clearly

  1206. that is not

  1207. the way it

  1208. is

  1209. get it

  1210. sorted now

  1211. before you

  1212. die

  1213. because there

  1214. are no

  1215. second chances

  1216. third point

  1217. very quickly

  1218. you have

  1219. everything you

  1220. need now

  1221. and you

  1222. may think

  1223. this is a

  1224. very miserable

  1225. sermon

  1226. your ticket

  1227. might not

  1228. work if

  1229. it's

  1230. homemade

  1231. and you

  1232. won't be

  1233. able to

  1234. do deals

  1235. later

  1236. but actually

  1237. in verses 27

  1238. to 31

  1239. the man tries

  1240. a second

  1241. time with

  1242. another deal

  1243. and it is

  1244. miserable for

  1245. him because

  1246. he does not

  1247. get what he

  1248. wants

  1249. Abraham says

  1250. no twice

  1251. but if you

  1252. can listen

  1253. for five

  1254. more minutes

  1255. more

  1256. five minutes

  1257. more

  1258. you get

  1259. what he

  1260. asks for

  1261. five minutes

  1262. that's what

  1263. I'm asking

  1264. for

  1265. you are

  1266. about to

  1267. get

  1268. what this

  1269. man asks

  1270. for

  1271. which means

  1272. you have

  1273. everything you

  1274. need to

  1275. know

  1276. you see

  1277. verse 27

  1278. he is the

  1279. great deal

  1280. maker

  1281. but the

  1282. moment he's

  1283. been knocked

  1284. back

  1285. immediately

  1286. he's after

  1287. his second

  1288. best

  1289. well we

  1290. can't do

  1291. that deal

  1292. let's do

  1293. the second

  1294. one

  1295. and what

  1296. he wants

  1297. is something

  1298. for his

  1299. brothers

  1300. look at

  1301. verse 27

  1302. for I

  1303. have five

  1304. brothers

  1305. verse 27

  1306. then I beg

  1307. you father

  1308. send him to

  1309. my father's

  1310. house for

  1311. I have five

  1312. brothers

  1313. I have five

  1314. brothers so

  1315. that he may

  1316. warn them lest

  1317. they also come

  1318. into this

  1319. place of

  1320. torment

  1321. he wants

  1322. something for

  1323. his brothers

  1324. it's really

  1325. clear thinking

  1326. he's caring

  1327. about his

  1328. family

  1329. it's a strong

  1330. attempt to do

  1331. a deal

  1332. send Lazarus

  1333. because my

  1334. five brothers

  1335. they are in

  1336. exactly the

  1337. same position

  1338. as I

  1339. am

  1340. they are

  1341. moral

  1342. enough

  1343. they are

  1344. rich

  1345. enough

  1346. they are

  1347. thought of

  1348. well enough

  1349. and yet they

  1350. have no idea

  1351. they have no

  1352. idea that

  1353. they're going

  1354. to be in

  1355. hell

  1356. so please

  1357. Abraham

  1358. send

  1359. Lazarus

  1360. to my

  1361. brothers

  1362. I wonder

  1363. what you

  1364. think a

  1365. dead

  1366. person

  1367. would say

  1368. it's a huge

  1369. industry in

  1370. that isn't

  1371. it

  1372. the

  1373. spiritualist

  1374. church on

  1375. Uxbridge

  1376. road

  1377. I

  1378. cycled

  1379. past it

  1380. in despair

  1381. that they

  1382. managed to

  1383. build it

  1384. spiritualism

  1385. is big

  1386. business

  1387. isn't it

  1388. have you

  1389. wondered

  1390. what a

  1391. dead

  1392. person

  1393. would want

  1394. to say

  1395. to you

  1396. well here

  1397. it is

  1398. look at

  1399. verse 28

  1400. for I have

  1401. five brothers

  1402. so that he

  1403. may warn

  1404. them lest

  1405. they also

  1406. come into

  1407. this place

  1408. of torment

  1409. everybody

  1410. you know

  1411. who has

  1412. died

  1413. regardless of

  1414. what they

  1415. believed in

  1416. life

  1417. in death

  1418. they have

  1419. met the

  1420. God

  1421. who made

  1422. them

  1423. they have

  1424. been exposed

  1425. to the

  1426. person

  1427. who knows

  1428. their hearts

  1429. and has

  1430. been cracked

  1431. open

  1432. and to a

  1433. man and a

  1434. woman they

  1435. would say to

  1436. you this

  1437. morning be

  1438. warned

  1439. be warned

  1440. and be

  1441. forgiven

  1442. that is what

  1443. dead people

  1444. would say

  1445. he can't

  1446. go

  1447. the man

  1448. can't go

  1449. but he wants

  1450. Lazarus to

  1451. go and

  1452. Abraham says

  1453. no but it's

  1454. not a vindictive

  1455. no he says

  1456. there's no need

  1457. for him to go

  1458. and it would do

  1459. no good

  1460. look at verse

  1461. 29

  1462. but Abraham

  1463. said they have

  1464. Moses and the

  1465. prophets

  1466. let them hear

  1467. them

  1468. Moses and the

  1469. prophets

  1470. that was the

  1471. whole bible

  1472. in Jesus'

  1473. day

  1474. even the

  1475. books before

  1476. John the

  1477. Baptist

  1478. would let

  1479. you know

  1480. that you are

  1481. not moral

  1482. enough

  1483. that though

  1484. you are

  1485. maybe moral

  1486. and though

  1487. you are

  1488. maybe rich

  1489. you are

  1490. not good

  1491. enough

  1492. but the

  1493. rich man

  1494. is desperate

  1495. look at

  1496. verse 30

  1497. he says

  1498. that's not

  1499. true

  1500. father Abraham

  1501. that is not

  1502. true

  1503. this is what

  1504. would make

  1505. them to

  1506. repent

  1507. send them

  1508. a dead

  1509. man

  1510. and then

  1511. they listen

  1512. and Abraham

  1513. says no

  1514. again

  1515. he says

  1516. their lack

  1517. of repentance

  1518. is not

  1519. because they

  1520. don't know

  1521. that they

  1522. need it

  1523. even looking

  1524. at their

  1525. money and

  1526. their treatment

  1527. of the

  1528. opposite

  1529. sex

  1530. would be

  1531. enough

  1532. to make

  1533. them realize

  1534. that they

  1535. need to be

  1536. forgiven

  1537. they know

  1538. that there's

  1539. a problem

  1540. but it's

  1541. because they

  1542. have a

  1543. heart

  1544. problem

  1545. that they

  1546. won't

  1547. believe

  1548. and Moses

  1549. and the

  1550. prophets

  1551. are enough

  1552. to meet

  1553. that need

  1554. the bible

  1555. Abraham

  1556. says is

  1557. certain

  1558. and it's

  1559. powerful

  1560. and if they

  1561. have Moses

  1562. and the

  1563. prophets

  1564. they have

  1565. everything

  1566. they need

  1567. do you see

  1568. he's implying

  1569. that he's been

  1570. treated unfairly

  1571. listening in

  1572. verses 27

  1573. and 28

  1574. the rich man

  1575. is saying

  1576. it wasn't

  1577. clear enough

  1578. it was never

  1579. big enough

  1580. you didn't

  1581. send me a

  1582. dead person

  1583. and Abraham

  1584. says but you

  1585. had the bible

  1586. you had the

  1587. bible

  1588. what more

  1589. do you want

  1590. you had Moses

  1591. on money

  1592. and poverty

  1593. and you had

  1594. Lazarus at your

  1595. gate and you

  1596. stepped over him

  1597. every day

  1598. and it never

  1599. occurred to you

  1600. that you may

  1601. need forgiveness

  1602. from God

  1603. and if you're

  1604. not going to

  1605. listen to those

  1606. two things

  1607. nothing else

  1608. will shake

  1609. you

  1610. it's not that

  1611. God is making

  1612. things difficult

  1613. but it's

  1614. look how much

  1615. trouble God

  1616. has gone to

  1617. to make it

  1618. easy

  1619. you've had

  1620. 1500 years

  1621. rich man

  1622. of Abraham

  1623. law and

  1624. prophets

  1625. pointing out

  1626. that you

  1627. cannot keep

  1628. the law

  1629. it cannot

  1630. be done

  1631. it cannot

  1632. be done

  1633. and you

  1634. have messenger

  1635. after messenger

  1636. saying God

  1637. is a forgiving

  1638. God

  1639. and a loving

  1640. God

  1641. and he will

  1642. receive back

  1643. anybody who

  1644. is humble

  1645. enough to ask

  1646. him for

  1647. forgiveness

  1648. and again

  1649. how easy

  1650. for us

  1651. just by the

  1652. standards

  1653. there are

  1654. Bibles

  1655. everywhere

  1656. aren't there

  1657. and you

  1658. have everything

  1659. you need to

  1660. know in

  1661. this book

  1662. do you get

  1663. the dreadful

  1664. end of the

  1665. story

  1666. the dreadful

  1667. end of the

  1668. story is that

  1669. the brothers

  1670. have got a

  1671. Bible in

  1672. their house

  1673. and he

  1674. knows that

  1675. his brothers

  1676. aren't going

  1677. to pick

  1678. it up

  1679. and read

  1680. it

  1681. they're

  1682. like him

  1683. they're

  1684. going to

  1685. ignore it

  1686. you can

  1687. change the

  1688. story for

  1689. yourself

  1690. can't you

  1691. you've

  1692. just got

  1693. to pick

  1694. it up

  1695. and read

  1696. it

  1697. and find

  1698. out what

  1699. forgiveness

  1700. is all

  1701. about

  1702. but there's

  1703. more

  1704. let me finish

  1705. with this

  1706. there's more

  1707. because we

  1708. actually have

  1709. what the rich

  1710. man asked

  1711. for don't

  1712. we

  1713. he has

  1714. said let

  1715. my brothers

  1716. hear the

  1717. warning voice

  1718. of a dead

  1719. man

  1720. and you

  1721. can hear

  1722. his voice

  1723. you can

  1724. hear what

  1725. the rich

  1726. man would

  1727. say in

  1728. Jesus'

  1729. story

  1730. and actually

  1731. Abraham offers

  1732. us something

  1733. even better

  1734. even if someone

  1735. should rise

  1736. from the

  1737. dead

  1738. well the

  1739. words of

  1740. Jesus are

  1741. the words

  1742. of somebody

  1743. who died

  1744. and was

  1745. risen from

  1746. the dead

  1747. they killed

  1748. Jesus but

  1749. he came

  1750. back to

  1751. me

  1752. and he

  1753. proved

  1754. Jesus knows

  1755. what he's

  1756. talking about

  1757. with life

  1758. and death

  1759. you often

  1760. hear

  1761. I often

  1762. hear

  1763. nobody

  1764. knows

  1765. what

  1766. happens

  1767. after

  1768. death

  1769. nobody's

  1770. ever

  1771. come

  1772. back

  1773. but that

  1774. is the

  1775. point

  1776. somebody

  1777. did

  1778. Jesus

  1779. knows

  1780. what he's

  1781. talking

  1782. about

  1783. and when

  1784. Jesus

  1785. came

  1786. most

  1787. of them

  1788. did

  1789. what

  1790. Abraham

  1791. suggests

  1792. they were

  1793. no more

  1794. convinced

  1795. by the

  1796. living

  1797. presence

  1798. of a

  1799. man

  1800. that

  1801. they've

  1802. killed

  1803. than

  1804. they've

  1805. been

  1806. by Moses

  1807. and the

  1808. prophets

  1809. which

  1810. means

  1811. in reality

  1812. not in

  1813. the story

  1814. they go

  1815. into the

  1816. situation

  1817. of this

  1818. man

  1819. they die

  1820. they are

  1821. buried

  1822. and they

  1823. go into

  1824. the shock

  1825. of realising

  1826. they are

  1827. in hell

  1828. not heaven

  1829. they realise

  1830. they cannot

  1831. do a deal

  1832. that everyone

  1833. they care

  1834. about

  1835. and everyone

  1836. they've

  1837. taught

  1838. that it'll

  1839. be all

  1840. okay

  1841. in the

  1842. end

  1843. is in

  1844. the same

  1845. place

  1846. but

  1847. actually

  1848. wonderfully

  1849. when

  1850. Jesus

  1851. rose

  1852. again

  1853. there

  1854. are

  1855. some

  1856. people

  1857. who

  1858. forced

  1859. their

  1860. way

  1861. in

  1862. in the

  1863. language

  1864. of

  1865. verse

  1866. 16

  1867. can you see that

  1868. forgiveness is

  1869. offered

  1870. and if

  1871. forgiveness is

  1872. an offer

  1873. for people

  1874. who repent

  1875. then get

  1876. out of

  1877. my way

  1878. I'm

  1879. going to

  1880. force

  1881. my way

  1882. in

  1883. I'm

  1884. going to

  1885. repent

  1886. my heart

  1887. is in a

  1888. miserable

  1889. stage

  1890. and that

  1891. is something

  1892. that I

  1893. want

  1894. I want

  1895. to be

  1896. forgiven

  1897. so the

  1898. only question

  1899. is which

  1900. of these

  1901. groups are

  1902. you in

  1903. will you

  1904. rely on

  1905. your

  1906. homemade

  1907. ticket

  1908. will you

  1909. rely on

  1910. doing a

  1911. deal

  1912. after you're

  1913. dead

  1914. or will

  1915. you take

  1916. hold of

  1917. the offer

  1918. that is

  1919. available

  1920. and brutally

  1921. force your

  1922. way in

  1923. by repenting

  1924. what will

  1925. you do

  1926. today if

  1927. you hear

  1928. his voice

  1929. pardon

  1930. not your

  1931. heart

  1932. let's pray

  1933. Thank you.
