  1. Now, what's your busiest day of the week?

  2. You probably think that mine is Sunday.

  3. It's the only day minister to work, isn't it?

  4. But it's not actually.

  5. The busiest day of my week

  6. is the same day as the busiest day of your week.

  7. And it's tomorrow.

  8. Because tomorrow is always going to be the day, isn't it?

  9. When you get all those things done

  10. that you never got round to doing today.

  11. And of course we know, don't we,

  12. that tomorrow never comes.

  13. I'll get down to it one of these days, we say.

  14. But one of these days becomes none of these days.

  15. And it actually never happens.

  16. And that is what Felix did with the gospel.

  17. Can you just look at verse 25?

  18. 25 are the little numbers on page 934.

  19. And the apostle Paul, as he reasoned

  20. about righteousness and self-control

  21. and the coming judgment,

  22. Felix was alarmed and said,

  23. go away to the present.

  24. To the present.

  25. When I get an opportunity, I will summon you.

  26. That's what Felix said.

  27. The fancy word for it is procrastination.

  28. I like that word.

  29. I like the sound of it, don't you?

  30. To procrastinate.

  31. To put off to tomorrow

  32. what ought to be done today.

  33. You're a terrible procrastinator

  34. you can say to someone tomorrow.

  35. And that's what lots of people do

  36. when it comes to the Lord Jesus.

  37. It's not that they reject it outright.

  38. They're not against him, they'd say.

  39. It's just they've never got around

  40. to do anything about it.

  41. They just keep putting it off.

  42. Of course, not everybody's got the same advantage

  43. as Felix did.

  44. Felix had the apostle Paul,

  45. who's probably the greatest preacher

  46. that Christianity has ever had.

  47. And he had the apostle Paul

  48. as his private chaplain for two whole years.

  49. He had the gospel explained to him

  50. by the best gospel preacher

  51. who's ever lived.

  52. And if he didn't understand it,

  53. well all he had to do

  54. was press the replay button, didn't he?

  55. Which he did frequently.

  56. Look at verse 26.

  57. At the same time,

  58. well it says at the end of the verse,

  59. isn't it,

  60. so he sent for him often

  61. and conversed with him.

  62. He says tomorrow.

  63. Many are.

  64. Tomorrow.

  65. Well I've got a more convenient time

  66. but there is never

  67. a more convenient time

  68. than right now.

  69. And so tonight,

  70. I want to challenge you.

  71. I want to challenge you,

  72. whatever your relationship is

  73. to the gospel of the Lord Jesus,

  74. to right now give full attention

  75. to what is happening.

  76. Because you are under the sound

  77. of the word.

  78. And God is speaking to us

  79. through his word.

  80. Somebody has said

  81. that the past is history,

  82. the future is mystery,

  83. the present is a gift.

  84. And that is why we call it the present,

  85. which is a bit corny, isn't it?

  86. I quite like it to have got past it.

  87. So let's make the most.

  88. Let's make the most of this present moment.

  89. It is God's gift to us.

  90. And if you're not sure

  91. where you stand in relationship

  92. to the Lord Jesus,

  93. seize the moment.

  94. Carpe diem, is that right?

  95. Seize the day.

  96. Make this the night

  97. when you sort it out.

  98. So all I want to do

  99. is I want to consider

  100. three things about Felix,

  101. all beginning with M.

  102. The man he was,

  103. the mistake he made,

  104. the message he missed.

  105. The man he was.

  106. Let me introduce you

  107. to this man Felix.

  108. He named himself.

  109. He chose his own name

  110. according to Acts

  111. from Biblical Literature.

  112. He was a slave

  113. who gained his freedom.

  114. And he took a new name,

  115. Felix,

  116. which means in Latin,

  117. happy.

  118. But I don't think

  119. he's a very happy man at all

  120. when you read about him.

  121. It's often the case,

  122. isn't it,

  123. that those who appear

  124. most happy on the outside

  125. are often inwardly sad.

  126. Some of the greatest comics

  127. that there have ever been

  128. are often the saddest of people.

  129. It's a strange phenomenon,

  130. isn't it?

  131. So who is this man?

  132. What kind of man was Felix?

  133. Felix,

  134. secular history,

  135. knows him as Felix,

  136. the procurator,

  137. the governor,

  138. the governor of Samaria

  139. and probably Judea.

  140. He was Pilate's successor.

  141. The procurator of Palestine,

  142. the man in charge,

  143. as far as the Romans

  144. were concerned.

  145. So he knew all about Jesus.

  146. From a job like that,

  147. you couldn't possibly know

  148. about Jesus.

  149. Look at verse 22,

  150. it says,

  151. isn't it,

  152. but Felix having a rather

  153. accurate knowledge

  154. of the way.

  155. Do you notice that?

  156. That's the description

  157. of Christians in those days.

  158. They were known as the way.

  159. He'd been properly breathed

  160. when he took over

  161. as the governor of Palestine.

  162. There was no way

  163. that he could not have known

  164. about the way

  165. because by this time

  166. in mystery,

  167. there's probably

  168. tens,

  169. twenty,

  170. thirty thousand people

  171. who would become Christians.

  172. That's what they think

  173. by Acts chapter 6.

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  174. So he would have known

  175. about Christians.

  176. He would have access

  177. to the official records

  178. of the crucifixion

  179. and the empty tomb.

  180. And Paul says

  181. to his immediate successor,

  182. Festus,

  183. in chapter 26,

  184. these things were not

  185. done in a corner.

  186. It's all on the public record.

  187. It's all in the newspapers.

  188. It's all in the public domain.

  189. And as procurator of Palestine,

  190. Felix was responsible

  191. for public order.

  192. But he didn't do

  193. a very good job

  194. at the verses 1-3

  195. of Paul's trial

  196. before Felix

  197. in chapter 24.

  198. The Jews arrived,

  199. don't they,

  200. in record time

  201. with their lawyer,

  202. Tertullus.

  203. And he sounds like a lawyer,

  204. doesn't he?

  205. Look at verse 1.

  206. After five days,

  207. the high priest

  208. and the house

  209. came down with some elders

  210. and it spoke from one

  211. Tertullus.

  212. They laid before the governor

  213. that case against Paul.

  214. And they say this.

  215. When he'd been summoned,

  216. Tertullus began to accuse him,

  217. saying,

  218. since though,

  219. through you,

  220. we enjoy much peace

  221. and since by your foresight

  222. and most excellent Felix,

  223. reforms are being made

  224. for this nation

  225. in every way

  226. and everywhere.

  227. We accept this

  228. with all gratitude.

  229. But to detain you

  230. no further,

  231. I beg you in your kindness

  232. to hear us briefly.

  233. Now that is what is called

  234. flannel,

  235. isn't it?

  236. Isn't that what it's called?

  237. It's lawyer's talk.

  238. There's a lawyer,

  239. and obviously it's the front

  240. and the back side.

  241. But that's what you paid him for,

  242. isn't it?

  243. It's the blatant rewriting

  244. of history.

  245. It's enough to make any Jew

  246. choke on his cornflakes

  247. because the reality

  248. was very different.

  249. Josephus,

  250. the Jewish historian,

  251. tells us that Felix

  252. was the worst ruler

  253. that Judea ever had.

  254. Tacitus,

  255. the Roman historian,

  256. writes to him

  257. as a master of cruelty

  258. and lust

  259. to exercise the powers

  260. of a king

  261. with the mind of a slave.

  262. In other words,

  263. there was nothing noble

  264. about him.

  265. There was nothing

  266. about this man,

  267. Felix,

  268. that commanded respect

  269. or loyalty.

  270. He was mean,

  271. he was corrupt,

  272. he was cruel.

  273. So mean and so corrupt

  274. that eventually

  275. his superiors,

  276. very soon after,

  277. summoned Felix to Rome.

  278. And Felix kept his life

  279. but lost his job.

  280. Nero sacked him.

  281. Fancy being sacked

  282. by Emperor Nero

  283. for being cruel.

  284. He was summoned

  285. by Nero

  286. for his crimes

  287. against humanity

  288. when the guy

  289. was, well,

  290. that is the kind

  291. of man he was.

  292. There's a saying,

  293. isn't there,

  294. power corrupts

  295. and absolute power

  296. corrupts absolutely

  297. and Felix demonstrates

  298. that here.

  299. You see in the way

  300. he deals with Paul

  301. in verse 19.

  302. They ought to be here

  303. before you

  304. to make an accusation.

  305. Should they have

  306. anything against me?

  307. But there are no witnesses

  308. in this court case.

  309. So the case

  310. should have been

  311. thrown out

  312. straight away.

  313. Roman law

  314. took it very seriously.

  315. If your original

  316. accusers didn't

  317. turn up in court,

  318. if the original

  319. accusers were absent,

  320. it should be thrown out

  321. and that was the case

  322. here.

  323. The Jews

  324. turned up with their

  325. lawyer,

  326. who's obviously

  327. a very good lawyer

  328. judging by those

  329. opening remarks,

  330. to try and get the

  331. judge on his side,

  332. but there's no case

  333. to answer.

  334. There are no witnesses

  335. and the original

  336. accusers are not

  337. in court.

  338. And so Felix

  339. should have thrown

  340. the case out of court

  341. and set Paul free.

  342. And not only that,

  343. Paul has been handed

  344. over to the Romans

  345. on trumped up charges.

  346. He's an innocent man.

  347. There's three S's,

  348. lots of alliteration

  349. tonight.

  350. Sedition,

  351. sectarianism,

  352. sacrilege.

  353. Three words

  354. we hardly use.

  355. Sedition,

  356. sectarianism,

  357. sacrilege.

  358. Don't worry if you

  359. don't understand them.

  360. Basically,

  361. they say Paul's

  362. a troublemaker.

  363. He's a rim leader.

  364. He's a desecrator

  365. of temples.

  366. These are the sort

  367. of charges that were

  368. brought against Paul.

  369. Now I'm not going

  370. to go into it.

  371. You can read

  372. Luke's transcript

  373. of the court case

  374. if you want

  375. in these chapters.

  376. And Felix knows

  377. that.

  378. But instead of

  379. acquitting Paul,

  380. he adjourns the

  381. case indefinitely.

  382. So look at verse 22

  383. he puts Paul on

  384. remand.

  385. It's just on page

  386. 934.

  387. Felix having a rather

  388. accurate knowledge

  389. of the way he put

  390. them on.

  391. Saying when Lysias,

  392. the tribune,

  393. comes down,

  394. I will decide your

  395. case.

  396. But as far as we know,

  397. Lysias never arrives.

  398. And as far as we know,

  399. Felix never sends him.

  400. And so for two whole

  401. years,

  402. two whole years,

  403. an innocent man is

  404. kept under arrest

  405. without trial.

  406. So that is Felix,

  407. the man in charge

  408. of law and order,

  409. the procurator.

  410. Now let's move on

  411. to Felix,

  412. the procrastinator.

  413. Felix,

  414. the procrastinator,

  415. his mistake.

  416. We've seen the man,

  417. let's see the mistake.

  418. And again,

  419. it's a mistake many

  420. people make.

  421. Let me quote to you

  422. Pink Floyd,

  423. the song Time.

  424. Ticking away,

  425. the moments that make

  426. up a dull day.

  427. Fritter and waste the

  428. hours in an offhand

  429. way.

  430. Kicking around on a

  431. piece of ground in

  432. your hometown,

  433. waiting for someone

  434. or something to show

  435. you the way.

  436. Tired of lying in the

  437. sunshine,

  438. staying home to watch

  439. the rain.

  440. You are young and life

  441. is long and there is

  442. time to kill today.

  443. And then one day

  444. you'll find ten years

  445. have got behind you.

  446. No one told you

  447. when to run,

  448. you missed the

  449. starting gun.

  450. So you run and you

  451. run to catch up with

  452. the sun but it's

  453. sinking.

  454. Racing around to come

  455. up behind you again.

  456. The sun is the same

  457. in a relative way

  458. but you're older,

  459. shorter of breath

  460. and one day closer

  461. to death.

  462. Every year is getting

  463. shorter,

  464. never seem to find

  465. the time.

  466. Plans that either

  467. come to naught or

  468. half a page of

  469. scribbled lines.

  470. Hanging on in quiet

  471. desperation is the

  472. English way.

  473. The time is gone,

  474. the song is over.

  475. Thought I had

  476. something more to say.

  477. Now that's the

  478. mistake Felix made.

  479. Waiting for someone

  480. to show you the way.

  481. And somebody did

  482. come and show

  483. Felix the way.

  484. In verse 14,

  485. Paul manages to get

  486. his testimony in

  487. in the midst of the

  488. trial and it's

  489. interesting.

  490. He says in verse 14,

  491. if you can see it on

  492. page 933,

  493. but this I confess to

  494. you, that according

  495. to the way which

  496. they call a sect.

  497. See what he's saying?

  498. He's saying,

  499. they call us a sect

  500. but I follow the

  501. God of the Jews.

  502. As a Christian,

  503. I haven't exchanged

  504. one God for another

  505. Felix.

  506. I believe the same

  507. God that they

  508. believe and I follow

  509. the God of the Jews

  510. as a follower of the

  511. way as a Christian.

  512. The way is an

  513. interesting term because

  514. it comes up again and

  515. again in this chapter.

  516. I've thought about it

  517. this week.

  518. What a weird thing to

  519. call people, the way.

  520. But what's the question

  521. that comes up in your

  522. mind, that springs to

  523. your mind when you

  524. think of the way?

  525. It's this, where are

  526. you going?

  527. Which way are you

  528. going?

  529. It's a title, isn't it,

  530. that begs a question,

  531. the way.

  532. And Jesus, of course,

  533. in John's Gospel, if

  534. you know anything about

  535. the Bible, he said,

  536. I am the way, the

  537. truth and the life.

  538. There's no way to the

  539. Father except through me.

  540. Jesus is the way.

  541. Chinese have got a

  542. proverb, haven't they?

  543. The journey of a

  544. thousand miles begins

  545. with one step.

  546. And so if you want to

  547. come to know God, if

  548. you want to come to

  549. know the God of the

  550. Jews, if you want to

  551. come to know the God

  552. of the Bible, if you

  553. want to come to know

  554. God as your Father,

  555. then Jesus is the way

  556. and that's the first

  557. step you must take.

  558. And Felix was well

  559. acquainted with that,

  560. wasn't he?

  561. That's fine too.

  562. Lots of people reject

  563. Christianity without

  564. knowing anything about

  565. it, but Felix knew

  566. a lot about it.

  567. He was well

  568. acquainted.

  569. He knew a lot

  570. about it.

  571. With the way he'd

  572. researched it.

  573. He'd be briefed on

  574. it.

  575. He'd have Paul

  576. explained to him the

  577. way of salvation.

  578. He knew the

  579. gospel.

  580. In other words, he

  581. endured the starting

  582. gun, but he didn't

  583. run.

  584. He knew the way, but

  585. he didn't start on

  586. it.

  587. And instead he

  588. stalled, he

  589. prevaricated, he

  590. procrastinated.

  591. Look at verses

  592. 24 and 25.

  593. This is out of

  594. court now, isn't it?

  595. Verse 24, he's out

  596. of court.

  597. He's back.

  598. And Felix has

  599. put him on

  600. remand.

  601. After some days,

  602. Felix came with

  603. his wife, Drusilla,

  604. who was Jewish, and

  605. he sang for Paul and

  606. she'd have to speak

  607. about faith in

  608. Christ Jesus.

  609. He's been shown the

  610. way of salvation.

  611. Faith in Christ

  612. Jesus is the way.

  613. He was being urged to

  614. run for his life, and

  615. again and again it

  616. was explained to him

  617. this way of salvation,

  618. but he never set out.

  619. Look at verse 25.

  620. And as he reasoned

  621. about righteousness

  622. and self-control and

  623. the coming judgment,

  624. Felix was alarmed and

  625. said, go away for the

  626. present.

  627. When I get an

  628. opportunity, I'll

  629. summon you.

  630. Now that word is

  631. very, very strong.

  632. Very, very strong in

  633. verse 25.

  634. Do you see that

  635. Felix was alarmed?

  636. He was afraid.

  637. He was trembling in

  638. his boots.

  639. He was quaking.

  640. He heard Paul preach

  641. about faith in Jesus

  642. and he trembled.

  643. Felix trembled, but he

  644. didn't turn from his

  645. sin.

  646. He trembled, but he

  647. didn't trust in Jesus

  648. as the way to go on

  649. his Savior.

  650. He was convicted, but

  651. not converted.

  652. He knows the way, but

  653. he never sets out on

  654. it.

  655. Instead, he

  656. procrastinates.

  657. He prevaricates.

  658. Do you see what he

  659. says?

  660. That's enough for now.

  661. Don't call me.

  662. I'll call you Paul.

  663. When it's convenient,

  664. I'll send for you

  665. again.

  666. So instead of

  667. listening to the

  668. voice of his

  669. conscience, which was

  670. screaming at him,

  671. he stifles it.

  672. And again and

  673. again for two

  674. whole years until

  675. it's silenced

  676. altogether.

  677. Why would

  678. anyone do that?

  679. For two whole

  680. years, he hears

  681. this message until

  682. it's silenced in

  683. his conscience.

  684. Now why would

  685. anyone do that?

  686. And there are

  687. three reasons hinted

  688. at in the passage,

  689. and they are

  690. interesting because

  691. we'll all be

  692. familiar with him.

  693. Because the three

  694. things that are

  695. stopping Felix from

  696. going on the way,

  697. from exercising faith

  698. in Jesus Christ,

  699. are the things that

  700. will damn him and

  701. stifle his conscience.

  702. And the three

  703. things that Paul

  704. warns about are

  705. actually the same

  706. three things Paul

  707. warns leaders about

  708. in 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  709. chapter 3.

  710. Three temptations

  711. for leaders in

  712. God's church,

  713. yeah, but three

  714. temptations also for

  715. leaders in society.

  716. What are they?

  717. Money, sex and

  718. power.

  719. So let me show

  720. you that.

  721. 2 Timothy

  722. is 25 and 26,

  723. and we get the

  724. reason he was

  725. stalling.

  726. As he reasoned

  727. about righteousness

  728. and self-control

  729. and becoming

  730. judgment,

  731. Felix was alarmed

  732. and said,

  733. go away for the

  734. present.

  735. When I get an

  736. activity, I will

  737. summon you.

  738. At the same

  739. time, he hoped

  740. that money would

  741. be given him

  742. by Paul.

  743. So he sent

  744. him off to

  745. and conversed

  746. with him.

  747. Now again,

  748. if you were

  749. listening when

  750. Rachel read,

  751. you'll notice

  752. that Paul let

  753. something slip

  754. in verse 17.

  755. Do you see that?

  756. Just a look at

  757. the page.

  758. Now after several

  759. years, I came to

  760. bring arms to

  761. my nation and

  762. to present

  763. offerings.

  764. Now if this

  765. was a Disney

  766. cartoon, you

  767. would hear the

  768. cash register

  769. tingle at that

  770. and Felix's

  771. eyes would roll

  772. around and

  773. there would be

  774. dollar signs

  775. wouldn't there

  776. on Felix's

  777. eyes.

  778. How many have

  779. stifled their

  780. consciences and

  781. ruined their

  782. souls for the

  783. love of money?

  784. And what can

  785. money buy?

  786. It's not

  787. convenient right

  788. now to be a

  789. Christian.

  790. I know if I

  791. become a

  792. Christian, it's

  793. going to cramp

  794. my style.

  795. There would

  796. be decisions

  797. that I've

  798. got to make

  799. that I just

  800. don't want

  801. to make.

  802. How many

  803. have stifled

  804. their conscience

  805. for the love

  806. of money?

  807. And the

  808. apostle says

  809. it's the love

  810. of money.

  811. Money is a

  812. neutral thing.

  813. It's a

  814. neutral thing,

  815. but we just

  816. can't help

  817. loving the

  818. stuff, can

  819. we?

  820. It's the

  821. love of money

  822. that is the

  823. root of all

  824. evil and you

  825. don't have to

  826. have money

  827. to love it.

  828. Think of all

  829. the people who

  830. are in hell

  831. tonight because

  832. of the love

  833. of money.

  834. Think of

  835. Judas.

  836. Judas Iscariot.

  837. He betrayed

  838. the Lord Jesus

  839. for 30 pieces

  840. of silver.

  841. It's hardly

  842. anything.

  843. What motivated

  844. him to betray

  845. Jesus?

  846. Well the Bible

  847. says very

  848. clearly that

  849. Judas was a

  850. greedy man.

  851. He was the

  852. treasurer of the

  853. twelve and he

  854. liked to put his

  855. hand in the

  856. till and he

  857. used to spend

  858. what was put in

  859. the treasurer's

  860. account for

  861. himself.

  862. And 30 pieces

  863. of silver is not

  864. very much to

  865. damn yourself with

  866. for eternity.

  867. It's not a lot

  868. of money you've

  869. got to hell

  870. with.

  871. But Judas

  872. did.

  873. 30 pieces of

  874. silver and he

  875. sold his

  876. soul.

  877. The New Testament

  878. talks about a

  879. man called

  880. Demas.

  881. Demas was one

  882. of Paul's

  883. colleagues.

  884. He was a

  885. church worker.

  886. He travelled

  887. with Paul.

  888. Can you imagine

  889. how exciting

  890. that was?

  891. And in 2

  892. Timothy Paul

  893. says Demas

  894. has forsaken

  895. me having

  896. loved this

  897. present age.

  898. Loved the

  899. world.

  900. And Demas

  901. has forsaken.

  902. He's gone

  903. back into it.

  904. He's gone

  905. back into

  906. making money.

  907. He's been

  908. blinded by

  909. Satan into

  910. thinking this

  911. world is the

  912. only world that

  913. matters.

  914. And the only

  915. thing that

  916. matters in this

  917. world is to be

  918. comfortable and

  919. well off.

  920. And so he's

  921. forsaken me.

  922. He's abandoned

  923. the gospel.

  924. Think of the

  925. rich young ruler

  926. in Luke chapter

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  927. 18.

  928. You cannot

  929. help but love

  930. the man in

  931. Luke 18.

  932. He's earnest.

  933. He comes running

  934. to Jesus.

  935. It's not a

  936. philosophy class

  937. at Oxford

  938. University.

  939. It's not a

  940. cool, detached,

  941. theoretical discussion.

  942. He's a man who's

  943. concerned about

  944. his soul.

  945. And he

  946. falls at

  947. Jesus' feet.

  948. And he says,

  949. what must I do

  950. to inherit a

  951. eternal life?

  952. How can I get

  953. to know God?

  954. How can I get

  955. into heaven?

  956. And Jesus

  957. says, well,

  958. what you have

  959. give to the

  960. poor.

  961. That's not the

  962. 11th commandment.

  963. Jesus is simply

  964. dealing with this

  965. man's need.

  966. It's not that

  967. he's rich that's

  968. the problem.

  969. It's not that

  970. he's got money

  971. that's the problem,

  972. but that money

  973. has got him.

  974. And Jesus

  975. says, you're

  976. going to have

  977. to deal with

  978. that.

  979. With that

  980. idolatry in

  981. life, you

  982. can't be

  983. saved otherwise.

  984. And we're

  985. told that the

  986. man goes away

  987. sad and

  988. Jesus lets

  989. him go.

  990. Reason number

  991. one, and it

  992. may be that

  993. this is one of

  994. the reasons in

  995. your life why

  996. you're not

  997. taking Jesus

  998. seriously in

  999. your life.

  1000. It's the love

  1001. of money.

  1002. Reason number

  1003. two is right

  1004. by his side

  1005. and her name

  1006. is Drusilla.

  1007. It says in

  1008. verse 24 that

  1009. she was his

  1010. wife, but in

  1011. fact, she was

  1012. somebody else's

  1013. wife.

  1014. Felix had

  1015. had three

  1016. wives.

  1017. Two of

  1018. them were

  1019. called

  1020. Drusilla,

  1021. which I

  1022. would have

  1023. thought would

  1024. be very

  1025. confusing.

  1026. But apparently

  1027. he'd taken

  1028. this woman.

  1029. She belonged

  1030. to someone

  1031. else.

  1032. He fancied

  1033. her, so

  1034. he took

  1035. her.

  1036. And it's

  1037. a sort of

  1038. smash and

  1039. grab mentality,

  1040. isn't it,

  1041. that sadly we

  1042. know only too

  1043. well.

  1044. You know, it

  1045. destroys

  1046. relationships.

  1047. And it

  1048. destroys families

  1049. and children.

  1050. Never mind

  1051. what self-control

  1052. and judgment

  1053. is.

  1054. Just go

  1055. for it.

  1056. Don't

  1057. worry.

  1058. Don't let

  1059. a preacher

  1060. spoil your

  1061. fun.

  1062. Don't let

  1063. a Christian

  1064. upbringing,

  1065. cramp your

  1066. style.

  1067. Fly away

  1068. Peter, fly

  1069. away Paul,

  1070. come again

  1071. another day.

  1072. It's not

  1073. convenient right

  1074. now.

  1075. And of

  1076. course, it's

  1077. not.

  1078. It's never

  1079. convenient, is

  1080. it?

  1081. If you're

  1082. involved in

  1083. that kind

  1084. of lifestyle,

  1085. it never

  1086. will be.

  1087. Felix was

  1088. not prepared

  1089. to change

  1090. his lifestyle.

  1091. There were

  1092. things I

  1093. just don't

  1094. want to

  1095. let go,

  1096. he would

  1097. say.

  1098. It's what

  1099. the Bible

  1100. calls the

  1101. pleasure of

  1102. sin.

  1103. And we've

  1104. got to be

  1105. honest,

  1106. and we are

  1107. going to be

  1108. honest as a

  1109. Christian preacher

  1110. and say there

  1111. is pleasure

  1112. in sin.

  1113. Living to

  1114. please

  1115. yourself.

  1116. Living

  1117. independently of

  1118. God, there

  1119. is pleasure in

  1120. that, but the

  1121. Bible says it

  1122. is for a

  1123. season.

  1124. And the

  1125. devil says to

  1126. you tonight,

  1127. he says go

  1128. for it, eat,

  1129. drink and be

  1130. merry.

  1131. For tomorrow

  1132. you die.

  1133. Live for now,

  1134. eat, drink and

  1135. watch telly.

  1136. Live for the

  1137. moment, you

  1138. deserve it.

  1139. That's what

  1140. every advert

  1141. says.

  1142. You deserve

  1143. it, you're

  1144. worth it.

  1145. Spoil yourself,

  1146. there's pleasure

  1147. in sin, but

  1148. there's only

  1149. for a season.

  1150. Do you

  1151. know what the

  1152. psalmist says?

  1153. The Bible

  1154. says there is

  1155. pleasure at

  1156. God's right

  1157. hand forever

  1158. more.

  1159. And what

  1160. is at God's

  1161. right hand?

  1162. Jesus is at

  1163. God's right

  1164. hand.

  1165. But Felix

  1166. prefers

  1167. through

  1168. the letter

  1169. Jesus.

  1170. Reason number

  1171. three is in

  1172. verse 27,

  1173. and it's the

  1174. most damning

  1175. of all.

  1176. He keeps

  1177. chanting for

  1178. Paul for

  1179. putting him

  1180. off.

  1181. Do you

  1182. see that

  1183. verse 27?

  1184. So the

  1185. tribune came

  1186. and said to

  1187. him, tell

  1188. me, are

  1189. you a

  1190. Roman

  1191. citizen?

  1192. And he

  1193. said, yes.

  1194. The tribune

  1195. said, I

  1196. bought the

  1197. citizenship for

  1198. a large sum.

  1199. Sorry, I'm

  1200. in the wrong

  1201. chapter.

  1202. I thought that

  1203. wasn't there.

  1204. Verse 27.

  1205. Good grief,

  1206. what's

  1207. happened?

  1208. Right.

  1209. Verse 27.

  1210. When two

  1211. years had

  1212. elapsed, Felix

  1213. was succeeded

  1214. by Porcius

  1215. Festus.

  1216. That is

  1217. probably the

  1218. best name

  1219. in the

  1220. whole of

  1221. the Bible

  1222. system.

  1223. Can you

  1224. imagine what

  1225. he was

  1226. called in

  1227. the school

  1228. playground?

  1229. Porcius

  1230. Festus.

  1231. When two

  1232. years had

  1233. elapsed, Felix

  1234. was succeeded

  1235. by Porcius

  1236. Festus, and

  1237. desiring to

  1238. give him a

  1239. favor to

  1240. the Jews,

  1241. Felix left

  1242. him in

  1243. prison.

  1244. Because he

  1245. wanted to

  1246. grant a

  1247. favor to

  1248. the Jews,

  1249. he left

  1250. him in

  1251. prison.

  1252. He showed

  1253. the case.

  1254. Why?

  1255. Because of

  1256. his career.

  1257. He wanted

  1258. to protect

  1259. himself.

  1260. And he

  1261. wanted to

  1262. desperately

  1263. cling to

  1264. power.

  1265. And he

  1266. must have

  1267. known which

  1268. way the

  1269. wind was

  1270. blowing.

  1271. You cannot

  1272. read

  1273. second history

  1274. and not

  1275. think it

  1276. was not

  1277. going to be

  1278. very long

  1279. that after

  1280. this there

  1281. was going

  1282. to be a

  1283. massive

  1284. civil war and

  1285. the Romans

  1286. have got to

  1287. clamp down and

  1288. Felix is

  1289. largely responsible

  1290. for civil

  1291. unrest in

  1292. Palestine.

  1293. He must

  1294. have known

  1295. which way the

  1296. wind was

  1297. blowing.

  1298. And he's

  1299. desperate to

  1300. cling on to

  1301. his job,

  1302. desperate to

  1303. find favor

  1304. with the

  1305. Jews so

  1306. he wouldn't

  1307. get in

  1308. trouble with

  1309. the superiors.

  1310. Isn't that

  1311. ironic?

  1312. Here he is,

  1313. he's willing to

  1314. shrug off the

  1315. claims of

  1316. almighty God

  1317. but he's

  1318. desperately

  1319. bowing and

  1320. scraping the

  1321. man.

  1322. He's a

  1323. man pleaser

  1324. and not a

  1325. God fearer.

  1326. And is that

  1327. you?

  1328. Is that me?

  1329. For as long

  1330. as you care

  1331. more for what

  1332. people think

  1333. than what God

  1334. says,

  1335. you're never

  1336. going to

  1337. move from

  1338. where you

  1339. are.

  1340. For as long

  1341. as you care

  1342. more for what

  1343. people think

  1344. than what God

  1345. thinks you're

  1346. lost.

  1347. It's not

  1348. convenient now

  1349. Paul.

  1350. It doesn't

  1351. quite fit in

  1352. with my

  1353. lifestyle,

  1354. with my

  1355. career,

  1356. my promotion

  1357. plan.

  1358. He's not the

  1359. first and he

  1360. won't be the

  1361. last.

  1362. And you

  1363. can't help

  1364. thinking

  1365. those who

  1366. know the

  1367. story of

  1368. Pharaoh.

  1369. The man

  1370. who faced

  1371. Moses and

  1372. he wouldn't

  1373. let God's

  1374. people go.

  1375. And ten

  1376. times God

  1377. sends these

  1378. plays and

  1379. comes into

  1380. Pharaoh's

  1381. life in a

  1382. really dramatic

  1383. way and it

  1384. says Pharaoh

  1385. hardened his

  1386. heart and

  1387. he hardened

  1388. his heart and

  1389. he hardened

  1390. his heart and

  1391. he stifled his

  1392. conscience and

  1393. he stifled his

  1394. conscience and

  1395. he stifled his

  1396. conscience and

  1397. until in the

  1398. end God

  1399. hardened his

  1400. heart and

  1401. gave him

  1402. over.

  1403. Think of

  1404. Pontius

  1405. Pilate,

  1406. Felix's

  1407. predecessor.

  1408. Do you

  1409. remember what

  1410. he did?

  1411. In front of

  1412. the crowd he

  1413. got a bowl and

  1414. he washed

  1415. his hands

  1416. because he

  1417. thought he

  1418. could wash

  1419. his hands

  1420. of the

  1421. whole affair

  1422. of Jesus.

  1423. He thought

  1424. he could wash

  1425. his hands

  1426. of Jesus

  1427. and every

  1428. Sunday there

  1429. are people

  1430. who confess

  1431. what you

  1432. have confessed

  1433. he suffered

  1434. under

  1435. Pontius

  1436. Pilate.

  1437. Reminding

  1438. themselves that

  1439. Jesus Christ

  1440. suffered under

  1441. Pontius

  1442. Pilate.

  1443. You cannot

  1444. wash your

  1445. hands of

  1446. Jesus.

  1447. Listen to

  1448. Charles Darwin.

  1449. Charles Darwin

  1450. wrote to a

  1451. friend called

  1452. J.D.

  1453. Hooker in

  1454. 1868.

  1455. And Hooker

  1456. had been to

  1457. see and

  1458. been to

  1459. listen to

  1460. Hamlet's

  1461. Messiah and

  1462. Darwin wrote

  1463. this.

  1464. He said

  1465. I'm glad

  1466. you are

  1467. at the

  1468. Messiah.

  1469. I should

  1470. like to

  1471. hear it

  1472. again but

  1473. I dare

  1474. say I

  1475. should find

  1476. my soul

  1477. too dried

  1478. up to

  1479. appreciate it

  1480. as in

  1481. olden

  1482. days.

  1483. For it

  1484. is a

  1485. horrid

  1486. bore that

  1487. I am a

  1488. withered

  1489. leaf for

  1490. everything

  1491. except

  1492. science.

  1493. Charles

  1494. Darwin

  1495. looking back

  1496. at earlier

  1497. days when

  1498. his heart

  1499. was softer

  1500. and his

  1501. conscience

  1502. was active

  1503. realising

  1504. that those

  1505. days are

  1506. probably

  1507. gone.

  1508. I've

  1509. hardened

  1510. my

  1511. heart.

  1512. It's

  1513. such a

  1514. horrid

  1515. bore that

  1516. I am a

  1517. withered

  1518. leaf for

  1519. everything

  1520. except

  1521. science.

  1522. He's

  1523. sold his

  1524. soul for

  1525. science.

  1526. We've

  1527. looked at

  1528. the man

  1529. and I

  1530. hope we've

  1531. learnt

  1532. something about

  1533. the mistake

  1534. that he

  1535. made.

  1536. He

  1537. postpones.

  1538. He puts

  1539. off to

  1540. tomorrow

  1541. what he

  1542. ought to

  1543. have done

  1544. that day

  1545. and he

  1546. fails to

  1547. understand

  1548. this that

  1549. to not

  1550. decide is

  1551. in fact

  1552. to decide.

  1553. Have you

  1554. got that?

  1555. to not

  1556. decide about

  1557. the Lord

  1558. Jesus is

  1559. in fact

  1560. to decide

  1561. when it

  1562. comes to

  1563. the gospel.

  1564. Hardening

  1565. his heart,

  1566. resisting

  1567. his conscience,

  1568. putting off

  1569. to tomorrow

  1570. what needs

  1571. to be done

  1572. today.

  1573. And that

  1574. is such a

  1575. dangerous game

  1576. to play.

  1577. and if

  1578. your

  1579. plan

  1580. it's a

  1581. pretty

  1582. hellish

  1583. place

  1584. this

  1585. earth

  1586. and so

  1587. it is

  1588. sometimes

  1589. isn't it?

  1590. It's

  1591. easy for

  1592. me

  1593. who's

  1594. lived a

  1595. pretty

  1596. charmed

  1597. life

  1598. in a

  1599. decent

  1600. country

  1601. not to

  1602. appreciate

  1603. that for

  1604. some

  1605. people

  1606. life is

  1607. a real

  1608. hell.

  1609. !

  1610. But even

  1611. in the

  1612. most

  1613. hellish

  1614. spots on

  1615. earth,

  1616. even

  1617. tonight,

  1618. in the

  1619. most

  1620. hellish

  1621. spots on

  1622. earth,

  1623. there is

  1624. always

  1625. some

  1626. extenuating

  1627. circumstances,

  1628. isn't there?

  1629. There's always

  1630. someone trying to

  1631. improve something.

  1632. There's always a

  1633. red cross,

  1634. isn't there?

  1635. Or

  1636. medicine

  1637. sans

  1638. frontier,

  1639. there's an

  1640. emergency,

  1641. a relief

  1642. organisation that

  1643. will come and

  1644. try and make

  1645. the situation

  1646. matter.

  1647. But imagine

  1648. living in a

  1649. world where

  1650. there's none

  1651. of that.

  1652. Where you're

  1653. cut off forever

  1654. from every

  1655. source of

  1656. good.

  1657. There's no

  1658. goodness

  1659. anymore.

  1660. There are no

  1661. friendships

  1662. anymore.

  1663. And friendship

  1664. is a good

  1665. thing that

  1666. comes from

  1667. God.

  1668. There are no

  1669. friends in

  1670. hell.

  1671. Let's learn

  1672. from the

  1673. mistake

  1674. Felix made.

  1675. Let me

  1676. share with you

  1677. finally the

  1678. message that he

  1679. missed in

  1680. verses 24 and

  1681. 25.

  1682. Paul here

  1683. gives us three

  1684. reasons why

  1685. Felix should

  1686. have believed

  1687. in Jesus.

  1688. Every time

  1689. Felix sent

  1690. for him it

  1691. was the same

  1692. message.

  1693. Imagine that

  1694. for two years

  1695. the same

  1696. sermon every

  1697. second year.

  1698. And it's

  1699. about faith

  1700. in Jesus

  1701. Christ.

  1702. And you

  1703. have it

  1704. there in

  1705. verse 25.

  1706. I feel like

  1707. it's the

  1708. fleshing out

  1709. of that.

  1710. There are

  1711. the reasons

  1712. that Paul

  1713. marshalled

  1714. to persuade

  1715. Felix to

  1716. go down the

  1717. way of

  1718. believing

  1719. in Jesus

  1720. Christ.

  1721. He

  1722. reasoned

  1723. with him

  1724. about

  1725. righteousness

  1726. and about

  1727. self-control

  1728. and coming

  1729. judgment.

  1730. Now I

  1731. don't know

  1732. if that

  1733. echoes

  1734. in you.

  1735. If you're

  1736. a Christian

  1737. you know

  1738. your Bible

  1739. at all.

  1740. That's what

  1741. we're told

  1742. is the

  1743. ministry of

  1744. the Holy

  1745. Spirit.

  1746. That's what

  1747. the Holy

  1748. Spirit does.

  1749. So in

  1750. John's

  1751. Gospel when

  1752. the Holy

  1753. Spirit comes

  1754. he will

  1755. convict of

  1756. righteousness

  1757. self-control

  1758. and judgment

  1759. to come.

  1760. That's the

  1761. Holy Spirit's

  1762. ministry.

  1763. And so Paul

  1764. is preaching

  1765. to this man

  1766. and the power

  1767. of the Holy

  1768. Spirit and

  1769. he's reasoning

  1770. with him.

  1771. And he's

  1772. pleading with

  1773. him about

  1774. rightness.

  1775. And self-control

  1776. and judgment

  1777. to come.

  1778. Now how

  1779. brave is that

  1780. of Paul?

  1781. How much

  1782. Felix needed to

  1783. hear that

  1784. message and

  1785. Drusilla for

  1786. that matter?

  1787. And they

  1788. needed to be

  1789. told right

  1790. from wrong

  1791. didn't they?

  1792. And they

  1793. needed to be

  1794. reminded that

  1795. it is God's

  1796. world and that

  1797. it is God

  1798. who determines

  1799. what is right

  1800. and what is

  1801. wrong.

  1802. That's not

  1803. your choice

  1804. Felix.

  1805. It's not my

  1806. choice and not

  1807. yours and it's

  1808. certainly your

  1809. public opinions.

  1810. And the way

  1811. you are living

  1812. Felix and

  1813. Drusilla is

  1814. not right in

  1815. God's sight.

  1816. Actually it is

  1817. wrong.

  1818. And they

  1819. need to be

  1820. challenged on

  1821. self-control.

  1822. And you may

  1823. be the great

  1824. governor of

  1825. Palestine,

  1826. Felix, but

  1827. actually you

  1828. can't govern

  1829. yourself.

  1830. And you

  1831. might even be

  1832. able to

  1833. acknowledge what

  1834. you're doing

  1835. is wrong, but

  1836. you can't

  1837. stop it,

  1838. Felix, can

  1839. you?

  1840. And you

  1841. might be

  1842. able to see

  1843. what is

  1844. right, but

  1845. you can't

  1846. do the right

  1847. thing because

  1848. you're not in

  1849. control of

  1850. yourself.

  1851. Neither are you

  1852. or I.

  1853. And that

  1854. is the

  1855. desperate

  1856. thing about

  1857. the human

  1858. condition,

  1859. isn't it?

  1860. It's not

  1861. just that we

  1862. make mistakes,

  1863. like making

  1864. mistakes in

  1865. an exam,

  1866. we fail the

  1867. exam so we

  1868. take the

  1869. research six

  1870. months later.

  1871. We are

  1872. controlled.

  1873. We can't

  1874. control ourselves.

  1875. We are

  1876. controlled by

  1877. sin.

  1878. And sin is

  1879. a power in

  1880. our lives that

  1881. destroys us.

  1882. And this proud

  1883. couple need to

  1884. be told that and

  1885. they need to be

  1886. reminded of it.

  1887. And they need to

  1888. be told the

  1889. judgment to come.

  1890. Now you've got to

  1891. give credit to

  1892. Paul.

  1893. You might hate

  1894. Christianity,

  1895. you might hate

  1896. the apostle Paul,

  1897. but Paul told

  1898. his judge,

  1899. you will be

  1900. judged.

  1901. Isn't that

  1902. something?

  1903. I had an

  1904. Oscar

  1905. story of

  1906. saying that

  1907. this week.

  1908. He told this

  1909. proud,

  1910. arrogant man

  1911. who would

  1912. be playing

  1913. God with

  1914. other people's

  1915. lives that

  1916. one day,

  1917. very soon,

  1918. you will have

  1919. to face

  1920. God himself.

  1921. And the

  1922. truth is,

  1923. tonight,

  1924. as much as

  1925. you may not

  1926. like it,

  1927. so will

  1928. you and

  1929. I.

  1930. And there's

  1931. no escape

  1932. from that.

  1933. death,

  1934. there is

  1935. no escape.

  1936. It's no

  1937. good as many

  1938. people say,

  1939. or think,

  1940. well,

  1941. when I'm

  1942. dead,

  1943. I'm dead.

  1944. No,

  1945. you're not.

  1946. Look at

  1947. verse 15.

  1948. If you look at

  1949. verse 15,

  1950. Paul says

  1951. there's going

  1952. to be a

  1953. resurrection,

  1954. there's going

  1955. to be a

  1956. resurrection of

  1957. the righteous,

  1958. the just,

  1959. and the unjust.

  1960. That's what

  1961. Christians and

  1962. Jews are

  1963. in common.

  1964. You say,

  1965. we both

  1966. believe the

  1967. same thing,

  1968. there'll be a

  1969. resurrection of

  1970. the righteous and

  1971. the wicked,

  1972. and that is

  1973. why faith in

  1974. Jesus Christ

  1975. is so important

  1976. tonight.

  1977. Because there

  1978. is no other

  1979. way that you

  1980. can be right

  1981. with God.

  1982. Jesus is the

  1983. only way that

  1984. you can be

  1985. right with

  1986. God.

  1987. And that is

  1988. the message

  1989. that this

  1990. man missed.

  1991. Jesus comes

  1992. to you this

  1993. evening in the

  1994. gospel that I'm

  1995. trying to preach

  1996. to you and he's

  1997. saying to you,

  1998. take my

  1999. righteousness.

  2000. Jesus is the

  2001. only one who

  2002. got it right.

  2003. And he comes

  2004. to you and he

  2005. says to you,

  2006. you can take

  2007. my rightness

  2008. and I'll

  2009. take your

  2010. wrongness.

  2011. The

  2012. Apostle Peter

  2013. said he died

  2014. the just for

  2015. the unjust,

  2016. he died the

  2017. right for the

  2018. wrong,

  2019. the innocent for

  2020. the guilty,

  2021. take my

  2022. rightness and

  2023. I'll take your

  2024. wrongness.

  2025. And it's too

  2026. good to be true

  2027. isn't it?

  2028. There is now no

  2029. condemnation for

  2030. those who are in

  2031. Christ's

  2032. lives.

  2033. Romans 8.

  2034. Whoever believes

  2035. in him,

  2036. John says,

  2037. in his gospel,

  2038. whoever believes

  2039. in him,

  2040. Jesus Christ is

  2041. not condemned

  2042. and has eternal

  2043. life.

  2044. Whoever does

  2045. not believe is

  2046. condemned already.

  2047. So people say,

  2048. well let's just

  2049. wait and find out

  2050. when it's too

  2051. late when judgment

  2052. day comes,

  2053. isn't it?

  2054. And it will be

  2055. too late then.

  2056. And you need to

  2057. find out now,

  2058. tonight,

  2059. what's the verdict

  2060. going to be?

  2061. And the amazing

  2062. good news of

  2063. Christianity in the

  2064. gospel is that if

  2065. you believe in

  2066. Jesus Christ,

  2067. you can hear and

  2068. now know what

  2069. the verdict is

  2070. going to be on

  2071. your life on

  2072. the day of

  2073. judgment.

  2074. And so you

  2075. don't have to

  2076. fear.

  2077. Not guilty.

  2078. What a weight

  2079. to be lifted

  2080. off your

  2081. shoulders.

  2082. You can live

  2083. the rest of

  2084. your life knowing

  2085. that on judgment

  2086. day, God is

  2087. going to say

  2088. about you,

  2089. not guilty.

  2090. Isn't that

  2091. wonderful?

  2092. That is the

  2093. gospel.

  2094. Don't you see

  2095. how urgent it

  2096. is?

  2097. And it's

  2098. something that

  2099. we need to

  2100. decide right

  2101. here, right

  2102. now.

  2103. There's a story

  2104. about Satan.

  2105. I'm not sure

  2106. if it's from

  2107. the scripted

  2108. letters or

  2109. not.

  2110. It's a famous

  2111. story.

  2112. The story is

  2113. Satan gets

  2114. together some

  2115. of his top

  2116. demons and

  2117. they have a

  2118. bit of a

  2119. brainstorm about

  2120. how they can

  2121. do a better

  2122. job of destroying

  2123. the human race.

  2124. And so they

  2125. have this little

  2126. get together,

  2127. I think there

  2128. were four of

  2129. them, and

  2130. they have this

  2131. brainstorming

  2132. session, and

  2133. the question is

  2134. how can we

  2135. capture more

  2136. people for

  2137. hell?

  2138. One of the

  2139. demons says,

  2140. well let's

  2141. tell them that

  2142. there's no

  2143. God.

  2144. Satan says,

  2145. well that's

  2146. not going to

  2147. do.

  2148. Everyone knows

  2149. that there's

  2150. a God,

  2151. everyone knows

  2152. that, they

  2153. just suppress

  2154. their truth,

  2155. they deny it,

  2156. they push it

  2157. down.

  2158. It's no good

  2159. telling them

  2160. that there is

  2161. no God,

  2162. because deep

  2163. down inside

  2164. they won't

  2165. believe it.

  2166. Well clearly

  2167. the second

  2168. demon says,

  2169. well why don't

  2170. we tell them

  2171. that there's

  2172. no heaven?

  2173. Satan says,

  2174. well everyone

  2175. wants to go to

  2176. heaven, don't

  2177. they?

  2178. Haven't you

  2179. noticed that?

  2180. That's true,

  2181. isn't it?

  2182. Every food

  2183. I take,

  2184. everybody wants

  2185. to go to

  2186. heaven.

  2187. Everyone goes

  2188. to heaven,

  2189. people want to

  2190. believe.

  2191. Well the

  2192. third demon says,

  2193. well let's

  2194. tell them

  2195. there's no

  2196. hell.

  2197. Well that

  2198. won't work

  2199. either,

  2200. because everyone

  2201. has got a

  2202. conscience,

  2203. and even

  2204. though they

  2205. try and

  2206. stifle it,

  2207. they know

  2208. that they're

  2209. going to

  2210. be judged,

  2211. people know

  2212. that there's

  2213. a right and

  2214. a wrong,

  2215. isn't it?

  2216. The first

  2217. word it seems

  2218. to me that

  2219. kids speak in

  2220. the playground

  2221. is that's

  2222. not fair.

  2223. Everybody's

  2224. got a sense

  2225. of justice.

  2226. Okay,

  2227. says the

  2228. fourth demon,

  2229. why don't

  2230. I go and

  2231. tell them

  2232. there's no

  2233. hurry.

  2234. brilliant,

  2235. says Satan.

  2236. No hurry,

  2237. no worries

  2238. mate,

  2239. she'll be

  2240. all right.

  2241. Billy Graham,

  2242. an American

  2243. evangelist,

  2244. he came to

  2245. London many

  2246. times in the

  2247. last 50

  2248. years,

  2249. probably preached

  2250. to more

  2251. people in the

  2252. world than

  2253. anyone else

  2254. has in

  2255. history,

  2256. and he

  2257. came to

  2258. London in

  2259. the 1970s

  2260. and he

  2261. was interviewed

  2262. on the BBC.

  2263. On the

  2264. interviewer,

  2265. who was very

  2266. sceptical of

  2267. this man's

  2268. Christian faith,

  2269. asked him

  2270. this question

  2271. how many

  2272. converts

  2273. are you

  2274. expecting in

  2275. this message,

  2276. Dr Graham?

  2277. And expecting

  2278. Billy to

  2279. say the

  2280. figures hundreds

  2281. or thousands

  2282. or hundreds

  2283. of thousands,

  2284. or expecting

  2285. to maybe even

  2286. for Billy to

  2287. be a bit more

  2288. spiritual and

  2289. pious to say

  2290. well we'll

  2291. have to leave

  2292. it up to

  2293. God.

  2294. But what

  2295. big Billy

  2296. said was

  2297. this,

  2298. just one,

  2299. just one,

  2300. if we can

  2301. make one

  2302. real

  2303. convert,

  2304. it would

  2305. have been

  2306. worth coming

  2307. across the

  2308. Atlantic.

  2309. In fact

  2310. he said

  2311. if I

  2312. can just

  2313. win you

  2314. to Jesus

  2315. Christ,

  2316. it would

  2317. be worth

  2318. coming.

  2319. And of

  2320. course the

  2321. interviewer

  2322. immediately

  2323. changed the

  2324. subject,

  2325. which is

  2326. what people

  2327. do.

  2328. And it's

  2329. what Felix

  2330. is doing,

  2331. and it's

  2332. what you

  2333. will do

  2334. as soon

  2335. as I

  2336. finish.

  2337. You'll

  2338. go on to

  2339. other things,

  2340. you'll go

  2341. home to

  2342. supper,

  2343. supper,

  2344. you'll

  2345. watch the

  2346. telly,

  2347. you'll

  2348. forget.

  2349. There is

  2350. no time

  2351. like the

  2352. present to

  2353. sort these

  2354. things out.

  2355. And if

  2356. you're not

  2357. sure of

  2358. where you

  2359. stand in

  2360. relationship to

  2361. Jesus,

  2362. now is the

  2363. time to

  2364. sort it out

  2365. before you

  2366. leave.

  2367. Between you

  2368. and the

  2369. Lord,

  2370. now is the

  2371. time.

  2372. The

  2373. problem with

  2374. Felix is if

  2375. he'd put his

  2376. faith in

  2377. Jesus,

  2378. he would

  2379. have been

  2380. safe.

  2381. But he

  2382. didn't,

  2383. he put his

  2384. faith somewhere

  2385. else.

  2386. Do you know

  2387. where he put

  2388. his faith in?

  2389. He put his

  2390. faith in

  2391. tomorrow.

  2392. What a silly

  2393. thing to do

  2394. because tomorrow

  2395. never comes.

  2396. Tomorrow

  2397. never comes.

  2398. But Jesus

  2399. Christ is

  2400. coming,

  2401. you can be

  2402. sure of that.

  2403. This man

  2404. that God

  2405. raised from

  2406. the dead

  2407. is coming

  2408. again,

  2409. the judge

  2410. of the

  2411. living and

  2412. the dead.

  2413. So let

  2414. me plead

  2415. with you

  2416. tonight,

  2417. let me

  2418. plead with

  2419. you tonight,

  2420. do not

  2421. make the

  2422. mistake of

  2423. Felix.

  2424. Do not

  2425. keep putting

  2426. off till

  2427. tomorrow what

  2428. needs to be

  2429. done today.

  2430. Augustine,

  2431. the famous

  2432. saint,

  2433. has said

  2434. this,

  2435. God has

  2436. promised

  2437. forgiveness

  2438. to your

  2439. repentance,

  2440. but he

  2441. hasn't

  2442. promised

  2443. tomorrow for

  2444. your

  2445. procrastination.

  2446. So tonight,

  2447. if you will

  2448. come to

  2449. God,

  2450. and you

  2451. will say

  2452. sorry,

  2453. and you

  2454. will ask

  2455. him to

  2456. forgive you,

  2457. and you

  2458. say to

  2459. him,

  2460. I realise

  2461. I've

  2462. messed up,

  2463. and there

  2464. is lots

  2465. and lots

  2466. of mess

  2467. to sort

  2468. out,

  2469. but I

  2470. believe in

  2471. the Lord

  2472. Jesus

  2473. Christ,

  2474. he has

  2475. died for

  2476. my sin,

  2477. he paid

  2478. the punishment

  2479. for my

  2480. sin,

  2481. please,

  2482. God

  2483. forgive me,

  2484. he will

  2485. forgive you.

  2486. But he

  2487. hasn't

  2488. promised

  2489. tomorrow for

  2490. your

  2491. procrastination,

  2492. today is

  2493. all you've

  2494. got.

  2495. Today,

  2496. why

  2497. there is

  2498. still

  2499. cause

  2500. today,

  2501. says the

  2502. psalmist,

  2503. harden not

  2504. your heart.

  2505. Let's bow

  2506. ahead to

  2507. him.

  2508. Thank you.
