  1. It's great to see you as always. Folks, I don't know if you've ever played the game of Guess Who.

  2. ! It's one of my childhood favourites. In Guess Who, the idea of the game is to guess the identity of the character of your opponent from a selection of about 30 possible characters in the game.

  3. So you use a process of elimination. You ask them questions about the appearance of their character. Do they have brown hair? Are they a man or a woman? Do they have a big nose or a small nose, big lips, small lips and so on.

  4. So you work out their character before your opponent works out your character. It's a great game.

  5. Now there's only really so far that you can push this analogy, but Mark's Gospel, it works a bit like a big game of Guess Who.

  6. Except Mark, who wrote the Gospel, is absolutely terrible at playing it. In fact, he wants to let you win.

  7. Because right from the beginning of his Gospel, he gives the game away in the first verse, doesn't he? Look at verse 1 there that Steve read.

  8. Mark kicks it off, the beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

  9. Mark reveals the identity of the main character of his book straight away.

  10. It's the first thing that he says to us, isn't it?

  11. He says to us, as the game begins, listen, my character is a man called Jesus, who is God's King, the Christ, the Son of God.

  12. He gives the game away.

  13. But actually he knows that with this particular character, you are going to need more help.

  14. He gives us the answer straight away, but it won't mean we'll automatically win the game.

  15. He tells us the answer by name, the identity of Jesus, but the problem still remains for us.

  16. Will we work Jesus out?

  17. Will we work him out?

  18. Not just in name, but in his nature.

  19. Guess who?

  20. Mark says.

  21. But you know, Mark isn't against us as he writes his book.

  22. He wants to help us.

  23. He wants us to win and to work Jesus out and to respond to him properly.

  24. Do you remember, if you were here last week, Mark showed us the right response for Jesus.

  25. If you look at verse 15, the last verse that Steve read there, Jesus comes out saying,

  26. the time is fulfilled, the kingdom of God is at hand.

  27. Repent and believe in the gospel.

  28. That is Jesus' slogan.

  29. And it shows us the response that Mark expects us to have towards Jesus.

  30. But in his opening section here, Mark shows us a collection of voices and of people who say things about Jesus and do things with him

  31. to help us to really work Jesus out.

  32. Guess who he says?

  33. So there are, I think, about six characters in this section who help us work Jesus out.

  34. And I want to take you through three of the main characters, at least three of them.

  35. And you may find it helpful to look on the back of your printed sheets that were in your Bibles

  36. to see those characters as we move through.

  37. So first of all, the first character that we see in this section is a messenger.

  38. It's a messenger.

  39. First of all, Jesus is the one announced by the messenger.

  40. Now I think we can see a really important figure in Mark's opening passage here.

  41. He's probably the most important, actually, if you look at verse 4.

  42. If we read that.

  43. John appeared, baptising in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

  44. And what we've got with this appearance of this guy, John, is a phenomenon.

  45. If you look at verse 4 to 8.

  46. This man, John, appears, and it's absolutely remarkable what happens.

  47. Look at verse 5.

  48. All the country of Judea and Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptised by him in the river,

  49. River Jordan, confessing their sins.

  50. Now John was clothed with camel's hair and wore a leather belt round his waist

  51. and ate locusts and wild honey.

  52. Now this man, John, his appearance is slightly odd, isn't it?

  53. To say the least.

  54. I am not sure that I could pull off the camel's skin and leather belt look.

  55. And he's eating locusts, isn't he?

  56. And honey.

  57. It sounds a bit like a stag do that has gone terribly, terribly wrong, doesn't it?

  58. But actually for the crowds who are around, his costume and the things that he does are loaded with meaning.

  59. They're bursting with meaning.

  60. So Mark tells us he generates this massive crowd, doesn't he?

  61. And his appearance reminds us of the appearance of Elijah,

  62. who is in the Old Testament part of the Bible.

  63. John is like a new Elijah.

  64. Now Elijah in the Old Testament was one of God's most important messengers.

  65. So he's like a new Elijah.

  66. And we see as well that he's in the wilderness, don't we?

  67. Around the River Jordan doing this baptism stuff.

  68. And again, those places are loaded with meaning for John's listeners.

  69. Do you remember way back in Exodus, in the story of Moses and the salvation from Egypt,

  70. God's people are led through the wilderness, aren't they?

  71. Through the desert.

  72. And eventually they cross over the River Jordan into the Promised Land.

  73. So John the Baptist gets these great crowds together and it's like a revival, isn't it?

  74. It's like a new Exodus.

  75. A new salvation.

  76. And it's all about to happen.

  77. So it's amazing.

  78. It's a phenomenon.

  79. Now what is really surprising is what John then says in verse 7 and 8.

  80. If you just glance down.

  81. He preached saying,

  82. After me comes he who is mightier than I,

  83. the strap of whose sandals I'm not worthy to steep down and untie.

  84. I've baptised you with water.

  85. But he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit.

  86. So all of this phenomenal activity, this new Exodus activity,

  87. is just part of the build-up.

  88. It turns out that John here isn't the main player.

  89. He's just the messenger boy.

  90. There is one coming, he says,

  91. who won't just get you wet with water,

  92. but he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit.

  93. God's Spirit.

  94. He will change you not just on the outside of your body,

  95. but he will change you on the inside.

  96. And he says to these folks around him,

  97. you need to get ready for him.

  98. Get ready.

  99. Confess your sins.

  100. Admit your need for forgiveness.

  101. Get ready for him.

  102. I've given you water,

  103. but he will be the Spirit-giver.

  104. So Jesus firstly is announced by this phenomenal messenger

  105. who says, get ready for Jesus.

  106. Second though,

  107. Jesus is announced by another group of people,

  108. the prophets.

  109. He's announced by the prophets.

  110. And the prophets hope in Jesus.

  111. Just look at verse 2 and 3.

  112. There's another group we hear from, isn't there?

  113. As it is written in Isaiah the prophet,

  114. Behold, I send my messenger before your face,

  115. who will prepare your way.

  116. The voice of one crying in the wilderness,

  117. Prepare the way of the Lord.

  118. Make his paths straight.

  119. So Mark there quotes some prophets

  120. from the Old Testament, doesn't he?

  121. The prophet Isaiah.

  122. And actually the prophet Malachi

  123. is quoted in there as well.

  124. So these prophets have said something in the past

  125. which suddenly now

  126. has a new resonance

  127. in Mark's day.

  128. You know, Emma and I have been watching

  129. a new crime series

  130. called Endeavour on ITV.

  131. It's just finished.

  132. It is a really great TV show.

  133. It's about the life of Inspector Morse

  134. when he was younger,

  135. when he first started out.

  136. It's really good.

  137. But actually, you know,

  138. the one annoying thing

  139. at the end of the series

  140. was that the producers

  141. decided to leave the plot

  142. on a ridiculous cliffhanger.

  143. So Inspector Morse is left in prison.

  144. He's falsely accused of murder.

  145. All the good guys have been framed

  146. for things that they didn't do.

  147. And all of the bad guys

  148. seem to have gotten away with it.

  149. It's really annoying.

  150. And you've got to watch,

  151. you've got to wait for a whole year

  152. to watch what happens.

  153. You're left in suspense.

  154. You're waiting for everything

  155. to be resolved in the plot.

  156. For things to be put right.

  157. You really, really want

  158. the next series to come.

  159. And I guess that's why

  160. it works, doesn't it?

  161. But Mark's Gospel,

  162. it comes at a point

  163. in the whole Bible story

  164. where there is a huge cliffhanger

  165. still looming.

  166. You know, it's been about 400 years

  167. since anybody has spoken

  168. God's word to the people.

  169. Just turn with me, if you will,

  170. to the last book in the Old Testament.

  171. So it's just a couple of books

  172. before Mark,

  173. to Malachi.

  174. Malachi.

  175. Malachi, you can find it

  176. on page 968

  177. and 969.

  178. So Malachi.

  179. The last book in the Old Testament.

  180. Page 969.

  181. Let me just read to you

  182. some words from Malachi

    Malachi 3 chapter mention

  183. chapter 3

  184. and verse 1.

  185. Behold, I send my messenger

  186. and he will prepare

  187. the way before me.

  188. And the Lord whom you seek

  189. will suddenly come

  190. to his temple.

  191. The messenger of the covenant

  192. in whom you delight.

  193. Behold, he is coming,

  194. says the Lord of hosts.

  195. But who can endure

  196. the day of his coming

  197. and who can stand

  198. when he appears?

  199. For he is like a refiner's fire

  200. and like fuller's soap.

  201. He will sit as a refiner

  202. and purifier of silver.

  203. And he will purify

  204. the sons of Levi

  205. and refine them

  206. like gold and silver.

  207. And they will bring offerings

  208. in righteousness

  209. to the Lord.

  210. Then the offering

  211. of Judah in Jerusalem

  212. will be pleasing

  213. to the Lord

  214. as in the days of old.

  215. As in former days.

  216. Now Malachi

  217. wrote those words

  218. about 400 years

  219. before Mark

  220. was around.

  221. And we see there

  222. that Malachi

  223. has got this great hope

  224. that things

  225. are going to change.

  226. They're going to change

  227. significantly.

  228. See what he says

  229. in verse 4.

  230. He gets a bit reminiscent,

  231. doesn't he?

  232. Nostalgic.

  233. Ah, the good old days.

  234. He says,

  235. do you remember

  236. those old days?

  237. The days of old

  238. where we offered

  239. to God

  240. in righteousness.

  241. righteousness.

  242. Where our relationship

  243. with God

  244. was right.

  245. What a happy time

  246. that was.

  247. What a good time.

  248. But the problem

  249. of Malachi

  250. is that's just

  251. not how life

  252. is now.

  253. If you read

  254. the short book

  255. of Malachi,

  256. it's maybe a 10 minute

  257. job,

  258. it's a great

  259. thing to do.

  260. Malachi

  261. gives us

  262. a sad story

  263. of the total

  264. breakdown

  265. and disintegration

  266. in the relationship

  267. with God

  268. and human beings.

  269. Everything

  270. has just

  271. fallen apart.

  272. There is this

  273. cosmic barrier

  274. there.

  275. And things

  276. are so bad

  277. in Malachi's time

  278. that actually

  279. people don't

  280. even realise

  281. they're bad.

  282. That is a bit

  283. like today,

  284. isn't it?

  285. Things have

  286. gotten so bad

  287. between God

  288. and human beings

  289. we don't even

  290. realise they're bad.

  291. It's really

  292. so sad.

  293. It's really

  294. so dangerous.

  295. But Malachi's

  296. hope is that

  297. that will change.

  298. And it will

  299. change,

  300. do you see,

  301. in chapter 3

  302. of Malachi

  303. when a messenger

  304. announces

  305. the arrival

  306. of the Lord.

  307. And God

  308. then

  309. will himself

  310. suddenly come.

  311. we'll

  312. know that

  313. when the

  314. Lord's

  315. messenger

  316. announces it.

  317. Then the

  318. Lord himself

  319. will suddenly

  320. come.

  321. So Malachi

  322. says,

  323. watch out

  324. for the

  325. messenger.

  326. When the

  327. messenger

  328. appears,

  329. we know

  330. that the

  331. Lord is

  332. coming.

  333. He's

  334. coming.

  335. He's

  336. coming.

  337. He's

  338. coming.

  339. So back

  340. to Mark.

  341. Back to

  342. Mark.

  343. Mark quotes

  344. the Old Testament

  345. prophets,

  346. doesn't he?

  347. in verse 2

  348. and 3.

  349. As if to

  350. say the

  351. cliffhanger

  352. is finally

  353. over.

  354. The silence

  355. is finally

  356. broken.

  357. Malachi's

  358. hope is

  359. becoming a

  360. reality.

  361. In Malachi's

  362. day it was

  363. when the

  364. messenger

  365. appears,

  366. the Lord

  367. is coming.

  368. He's

  369. coming.

  370. But in

  371. Mark's

  372. time it's

  373. not like

  374. that.

  375. John,

  376. the

  377. messenger

  378. arrives,

  379. and so

  380. now for

  381. Mark,

  382. the Lord

  383. has come.

  384. The Lord

  385. has come.

  386. Jesus is

  387. announced by

  388. the messenger,

  389. and so

  390. Jesus is

  391. the hope

  392. of the

  393. prophets.

  394. But there's

  395. a third

  396. character in

  397. this opening

  398. section of

  399. Mark.

  400. We also

  401. see that

  402. Jesus is

  403. the one

  404. affirmed

  405. by the

  406. Father,

  407. by God

  408. the Father.

  409. Have a

  410. little look

  411. down at

  412. verse 9

  413. there.

  414. So Mark

  415. says,

  416. in those

  417. days Jesus

  418. came from

  419. Nazareth of

  420. Galilee,

  421. and was

  422. baptised by

  423. John in

  424. the Jordan.

  425. So at the

  426. beginning of

  427. Mark's

  428. Gospel we

  429. don't get

  430. Mary and

  431. Joseph,

  432. do we?

  433. We don't

  434. get any

  435. stories of

  436. mangers,

  437. there are

  438. no genealogies,

  439. there is

  440. no childhood

  441. of Jesus.

  442. Mark

  443. introduces

  444. Jesus in

  445. a really

  446. abrupt way

  447. doesn't he?

  448. It's as if

  449. Jesus just

  450. appears out

  451. of nowhere,

  452. and he

  453. comes and

  454. he's almost

  455. like everyone

  456. else isn't

  457. he,

  458. being

  459. baptised

  460. by John.

  461. But what

  462. happens at

  463. his baptism

  464. really distinguishes

  465. Jesus from

  466. everybody else

  467. around him.

  468. as he's

  469. baptised by

  470. John,

  471. he comes

  472. out of the

  473. water,

  474. doesn't he?

  475. And Mark

  476. uses a

  477. word that

  478. is only

  479. used in

  480. his Gospel

  481. and he

  482. only uses

  483. it twice.

  484. Look at

  485. verse 10.

  486. When he

  487. came up out

  488. of the

  489. water,

  490. immediately

  491. he saw

  492. the heavens

  493. opening,

  494. and the

  495. spirit

  496. descended

  497. on him

  498. like a

  499. dove.

  500. Now the

  501. word

  502. opening

  503. there is

  504. more like

  505. the word

  506. torn.

  507. The heavens

  508. were torn,

  509. open.

  510. That's the

  511. unique word

  512. there.

  513. As Jesus

  514. appears from

  515. this baptism,

  516. something

  517. unprecedented,

  518. something

  519. truly cosmic

  520. occurs there.

  521. The heavens

  522. are torn,

  523. open.

  524. As Jesus

  525. appears from

  526. the baptism,

  527. it's almost

  528. like the

  529. twitch in

  530. the curtains

  531. between

  532. heaven and

  533. earth,

  534. suddenly opens,

  535. doesn't it,

  536. momentarily.

  537. It twitches

  538. open,

  539. they're torn

  540. open.

  541. And it's

  542. the same

  543. word that

  544. Mark uses

  545. at the

  546. end of

  547. his Gospel

  548. when Jesus

  549. dies on

  550. the cross.

  551. When the

  552. temple curtain

  553. is torn

  554. from top

  555. to bottom.

  556. The curtain

  557. that divides

  558. man from

  559. God is

  560. torn.

  561. heaven.

  562. So Jesus

  563. appears,

  564. and he

  565. is the

  566. one to

  567. break down

  568. that

  569. dividing

  570. wall.

  571. He will

  572. tear open

  573. the cosmic

  574. divide between

  575. man and

  576. between God.

  577. And a voice

  578. comes from

  579. heaven at that

  580. point,

  581. doesn't it,

  582. in verse

  583. 11.

  584. You are my

  585. beloved son,

  586. with you I

  587. am well

  588. pleased.

  589. Christ.

  590. The heavens

  591. tear open

  592. as Jesus

  593. appears,

  594. and the

  595. Spirit of

  596. God descends

  597. on him

  598. like a

  599. dove.

  600. And this

  601. voice from

  602. heaven,

  603. God the

  604. Father,

  605. booms out.

  606. It reminds

  607. us of the

  608. anointing

  609. ceremonies of

  610. kings in

  611. Malachi's good

  612. old days.

  613. the great

  614. kings of

  615. Israel,

  616. like King

  617. David,

  618. who were

  619. anointed

  620. with oil,

  621. and the

  622. Spirit of

  623. God rushed

  624. upon them.

  625. It's

  626. Jesus'

  627. anointing

  628. as God's

  629. king here.

  630. The Spirit

  631. falls upon

  632. him,

  633. and God

  634. the Father

  635. says,

  636. I'm delighted

  637. in you,

  638. my son,

  639. my king.

  640. Jesus is

  641. affirmed

  642. by God

  643. the Father.

  644. So everything

  645. comes to a

  646. head,

  647. doesn't it,

  648. at the

  649. baptism of

  650. Jesus.

  651. The one

  652. whom the

  653. messenger

  654. announces

  655. is the

  656. one who

  657. the prophets

  658. hoped for.

  659. The Spirit

  660. giver is

  661. here.

  662. So it

  663. isn't he

  664. is coming

  665. anymore,

  666. it is most

  667. certainly he

  668. has come.

  669. Malachi's

  670. dream has

  671. come true.

  672. He's the

  673. Spirit giver

  674. come to

  675. change us

  676. from the

  677. inside.

  678. God's

  679. pleasing,

  680. delightful

  681. son,

  682. his king.

  683. So it's

  684. good news.

  685. It is

  686. good news.

  687. But you

  688. know,

  689. as we

  690. finish this

  691. afternoon,

  692. Mark changes

  693. the mood

  694. in the last

  695. few verses

  696. that we

  697. read.

  698. Guess who?

  699. He says to

  700. us.

  701. Even though

  702. Mark wants

  703. us to win,

  704. he knows we

  705. are going to

  706. need more

  707. help to

  708. work Jesus

  709. out.

  710. Because the

  711. Lord Jesus

  712. has come,

  713. but not in

  714. the way that

  715. we'd expect.

  716. Look with me

  717. at verse 12

  718. to 15

  719. there.

  720. After the

  721. baptism,

  722. the Spirit

  723. immediately

  724. drove Jesus

  725. out into

  726. the wilderness.

  727. And he

  728. was in the

  729. wilderness

  730. 40 days,

  731. being tempted

  732. by Satan.

  733. He was with

  734. the wild

  735. animals,

  736. and the

  737. angels were

  738. ministering to

  739. him.

  740. Now after

  741. John was

  742. arrested,

  743. Jesus came

  744. into Galilee

  745. proclaiming the

  746. gospel of

  747. God and

  748. saying,

  749. the time is

  750. fulfilled,

  751. and the

  752. kingdom of

  753. God is at

  754. hand.

  755. Repent and

  756. believe in

  757. the gospel.

  758. There are a

  759. few more

  760. characters here,

  761. aren't we,

  762. that we see.

  763. With this

  764. new exodus

  765. salvation that

  766. Jesus brings

  767. in, did you

  768. notice that the

  769. job of the

  770. appearing Lord,

  771. he finally

  772. comes,

  773. but it

  774. starts not

  775. with glory

  776. and power

  777. and might,

  778. but with a

  779. trip to the

  780. desert, a

  781. trip to the

  782. wilderness.

  783. He's led by

  784. the Spirit of

  785. God to be

  786. alone.

  787. He's driven

  788. out by the

  789. Spirit of

  790. God to face

  791. Satan, and

  792. he's opposed

  793. by the devil,

  794. and he's

  795. tempted by

  796. him for

  797. 40 days.

  798. He's with

  799. the wild

  800. animals, he

  801. is threatened.

  802. And the

  803. phenomenal

  804. king's

  805. messenger boy

  806. in verse

  807. 14 is

  808. arrested.

  809. He's

  810. opposed by

  811. the authorities.

  812. So when

  813. the Lord

  814. arrives, he

  815. doesn't arrive

  816. with open

  817. arms, does

  818. he?

  819. But Mark

  820. there gives

  821. us a hint

  822. that as the

  823. Lord tears

  824. the heavens

  825. open, he

  826. himself must

  827. be torn by

  828. opposition.

  829. And he

  830. must face

  831. temptation, he

  832. must face

  833. our greatest

  834. enemy.

  835. You know,

  836. verse 12

  837. and 14

  838. seem like bad

  839. news, don't

  840. they, if it

  841. weren't for

  842. verse 15.

  843. Because after

  844. the temptation,

  845. after the

  846. arrest, the

  847. Lord Jesus

  848. again emerges

  849. into Galilee.

  850. He turns what

  851. we think we

  852. need from the

  853. Lord on

  854. its head.

  855. He's led

  856. by the

  857. Spirit to

  858. face Satan.

  859. And it's

  860. only getting

  861. through

  862. opposition

  863. and evil

  864. and temptation

  865. and to

  866. emerge on

  867. the other

  868. side that

  869. Jesus can

  870. show us

  871. that he

  872. is Lord.

  873. Then and

  874. only then

  875. does he

  876. and can he

  877. say of

  878. himself that

  879. the time is

  880. fulfilled and

  881. the kingdom

  882. of God is

  883. at hand.

  884. Repent and

  885. believe in

  886. the gospel.

  887. So it

  888. really isn't

  889. the Lord is

  890. coming, the

  891. Lord is

  892. coming.

  893. Jesus says

  894. about himself

  895. that the

  896. Lord has

  897. come.

  898. Only

  899. though by

  900. emerging from

  901. temptation

  902. and opposition

  903. can he

  904. truly say

  905. that.

  906. Jesus

  907. hoped in

  908. the

  909. prophets

  910. announced

  911. by the

  912. messenger

  913. affirmed

  914. by the

  915. father

  916. led by

  917. the

  918. spirit

  919. tempted

  920. by the

  921. devil

  922. and

  923. then

  924. and

  925. only

  926. then

  927. emerging

  928. as

  929. self-pronounced

  930. king.

  931. Guess who

  932. Mark says

  933. have you

  934. worked him

  935. out?

  936. Let's pray.

  937. Let's종
