  1. Mark chapter 4. If you would kindly turn that up. Mark 4 and verse 40. Just over the page. He said to them, Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?

    Mark 4 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. And the Lucas translation of that is, Why are you so dreadfully frightened? Can you still not trust me? Can you still not trust me?

  4. And how often, sadly, the Lord has to say those words to his people, me included.

  5. Well, as ever, it's so encouraging to be with you on a Sunday evening and to hear news of progress and much besides.

  6. And it's always an encouragement to consider with you God's powerful word.

  7. So we turn again to the Gospel of Mark, which is rather the Gospel of Jesus as told by Mark.

  8. It's a special book for me. I think one or two of you will know. At least 35 years ago, I think it was, our staff at St. Helens started it together and were so encouraged by it that we decided to start a course for all the students who came to us from the various hospitals and student residences around.

  9. And we found that even then, 35 years ago, they were astonishingly ignorant.

  10. And so we decided that we would get them to study at least one Gospel before they left us.

  11. And we chose this Gospel of Mark.

  12. And we also thought that in doing that, we would introduce them to the real Jesus Christ.

  13. So that was our aim.

  14. And it's gone on ever since.

  15. It's a very simple aim.

  16. And I think it's been very effective.

  17. And I hope it's led that they would know a great deal more than one Gospel and the person of Christ.

  18. Actually, I remember very little of that beginning.

  19. That course is still going strong.

  20. But my stage of life, memory is not one strong suit.

  21. As that great philosopher of life, Norman Wisdom, once said,

  22. when you get old, three things happen to you.

  23. Your memory goes first.

  24. And I can't remember the other two.

  25. So, because I can't really remember very much of that original study,

  26. I've decided for my own nourishment and progress to revise Mark on my own.

  27. And it's been a slow and delightful journey.

  28. And I've arrived at chapter 4, verse 35.

  29. And I found ahead of me, and I want to share with you some of the things I've found,

  30. I found here a typical Mark section on miracles.

  31. Four great miracles, making three sections.

  32. If you like, the chapter division is not really very helpful.

  33. I suppose the people who published ESV didn't have the authority to change the chapter divisions.

  34. But I suppose, really, it should start.

  35. Chapter 4, verse 35 should be the beginning of chapter 5.

  36. So, this unified section contains three scenes.

  37. First, of course, the furious scope.

  38. Just watch it as I say this.

  39. First, the furious storm.

  40. 4, verse 35 to 41.

  41. Then, Legion.

  42. This wretched poor man possessed by the devil.

  43. 5, 1 to 20.

  44. And then, thirdly, the dead child and the sick woman,

  45. which stand as one great miracle.

  46. Or, there are two.

  47. 5, 21 to 43.

  48. Now, these are, for many of you, I know, familiar stories.

  49. But they have a unifying theme that runs through that whole section.

  50. They tell of overwhelming destructive forces before which we human beings, whether in the 1st century or the 21st century, are absolutely helpless.

  51. So, why does Mark tell us these stories?

  52. And what is their message on the basis of our helplessness?

  53. Well, we can be quite sure that there were many miracles that Jesus did.

  54. I should think of hundreds, even not thousands.

  55. Would you not think?

  56. And he has chosen these with a purpose.

  57. What is that purpose?

  58. And what is his message?

  59. Well, message number one, every Christian can recognize.

  60. Mark has been plugging it from the beginning of his gospel.

  61. And I'm not going to spend a lot of time on it.

  62. You know it well.

  63. It's the foundation of the Christian faith.

  64. And Mark is recording how the disciples learned it until they came to a firm conviction about it.

  65. And that is that Jesus is Lord.

  66. He is none other than the God-man.

  67. That with him nothing is impossible.

  68. And that he possesses all authority in heaven and earth.

  69. You knew that?

  70. Of course you knew that.

  71. That's fundamental to the Christian faith.

  72. You can't be a Christian without believing it.

  73. That is number one message in Mark.

  74. No Christianity without Christ as a foundation.

  75. We won't stay long on that.

  76. But we'll just get the pattern of it quickly together before we go on to matter that is not quite so well known.

  77. First let's look at the destructive forces of nature.

  78. Chapter 4, 35 to 41.

  79. I'm not going to look at all the details.

  80. You know them well.

  81. Here are elemental forces before which everybody is helpless.

  82. Today as ever.

  83. Just think of tsunamis sweeping away.

  84. Homes and hundreds of people in Japan recently.

  85. Think of hurricanes.

  86. They know that better in the Midwest of America.

  87. Think of earthquakes.

  88. Perhaps we're more aware of these things in modern times because of communication.

  89. Only this week I saw a picture of people in their cars racing away from a dark typhoon that was approaching.

  90. Hoping that it would not overtake them.

  91. Must have been a terrifying feeling.

  92. The control I think of the forces of nature.

  93. Then the restoration of suffering people.

  94. And what we're being told by Mark in this very simple story is that our Lord had complete command over them.

  95. Look at verse 39.

  96. Just a simple word.

  97. Just a simple word.

  98. Peace be still.

  99. For I suppose in colloquial English she looked down at the storm and said, shut up.

  100. And an unheard of result.

  101. The wind stopped.

  102. The waves were calm.

  103. I wonder how many of you are sailors.

  104. I'm sure there are sailors here.

  105. I was compulsively forced to go in the Navy for three years.

  106. I quite enjoyed it.

  107. And one thing you learn there, I was in the Mediterranean for three years, is that the wind can in fact stop suddenly.

  108. But of course what never happens is that the waves are completely calm immediately.

  109. The waves go on.

  110. What is called the swell goes on.

  111. And if you're a sailor and not a very good sailor, you will know that it is that that makes you ill.

  112. It's not the wind.

  113. It's the waves that will take two days to go down after a storm.

  114. So here is an astonishing demonstration of the power of Christ over the destructive forces of nature.

  115. Next, we look down, what, 20 verses of it again.

  116. I won't look at the details.

  117. It's the destructive forces of Satan.

  118. Now you know as well as I do that he is a very powerful influence in the world.

  119. Jesus tells us he's the God of this world.

  120. So his power is very great under the sovereignty of God.

  121. And Mark goes out of his way in a number of details to tell us what a helpless and hopeless situation the devil is talking about.

  122. Just look at verses 3 and 4.

  123. We won't look at it anymore.

  124. He lived among the tombs.

  125. No one could bind him anymore.

  126. Not even with a chain.

  127. For he'd often been bound with shackles and chains.

  128. But he wrenched the chains apart.

  129. He broke the shackles in pieces.

  130. No one had strength to subdue him.

  131. Mark alone mentions that.

  132. But I think he wants us to know that this was an impossibility.

  133. People have tried and failed.

  134. Yes, the devil has people in his group.

  135. And I think this story is meant to be an example of his power in the world.

  136. I note that the increasingly apostate Church of England is removing any mention of the devil from the baptismal service.

  137. And we're trying to remove any mention of sin.

  138. It's very difficult to know what's left, isn't it?

  139. Well, there's been an outcry about sin, but not about the devil apparently.

  140. I think this episode stands for the reality of the world that Satan is the cause of all the misery.

  141. That there is.

  142. I've only got one cross-reference for you.

  143. So keep a finger, if you will, there.

  144. If you want to know what the devil is responsible for in the world today,

  145. and you want it summarized in one sentence,

  146. you'll find it in John 8, 44.

  147. Will you turn to that, and will someone sing out to me,

  148. in a loud voice, because I'm not only shrinking, but I'm getting death,

  149. what are the two marks of the devil in the world?

  150. In fact, I will give you a hint by reading the verse.

  151. Verse 44, John 8.

  152. You are of your father, the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires.

  153. He was a murderer from the beginning, and he does not stand in the truth,

  154. because there is no truth in him.

  155. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and father of lies.

  156. What are the two things, please?

  157. Lies.

  158. Murder.

  159. And murder, violence, death, terrorism.

  160. Right.

  161. Now, would you not say that those two things are actually right at the root of our modern world?

  162. If you read the papers, or if you look at your television, you'll see them every day, won't you?

  163. Imagine you could get rid of all the lies in the world.

  164. The lies in your office, the lies in your paper, the lies that politicians tell.

  165. And imagine you could get rid of all the terror, the fighting, the murder, the wars.

  166. It would be a totally different world, but it's not going to happen.

  167. Until Christ returns.

  168. So, what did Jesus do?

  169. He said, verse 8, come out of them.

  170. That was all.

  171. And the result was lovely, isn't it?

  172. Verse 8, verse 15 must be a very favorite verse for all of us.

  173. When the people came to investigate what had happened to this poor man,

  174. they saw one who had been in the legion sitting there,

  175. clothed, no longer naked, in his right mind, no longer insane,

  176. and they were afraid.

  177. And sitting peacefully, resting, as we were thinking of the children just now.

  178. Almighty power.

  179. The destructive forces of nature, followed by the destructive forces of Satan,

  180. the devil, the demon, forget it.

  181. The world of demons.

  182. Thirdly, the destructive nature of sickness and death.

  183. Which means that ultimately we all succumb to this great force.

  184. And what is needed for that in the last section, which is verse 21 to the end,

  185. all that is needed is that Jesus gives a gentle word,

  186. get up, little girl.

  187. And with a grasp of her hand, he helps her to her feet.

  188. Verse 41.

  189. Taking her by the hand, he said to her,

  190. to lead her kumai, which means, little girl,

  191. I say to you, get up.

  192. And immediately the girl got up and began walking,

  193. because she was 12 years of age,

  194. and they were immediately overcome and astonished.

  195. Would you know, please?

  196. Impossible.

  197. Now, in the light of these miracles,

  198. which are carefully chosen by Mark,

  199. these destructive forces overcome by the power of Christ,

  200. an honest person is bound to ask the question,

  201. which is the fundamental question of the early Mark's gospel,

  202. chapter 4, verse 41.

  203. And they were filled with great fear,

  204. and said to one another,

  205. who then is this?

  206. Well, indeed, who then is this?

  207. And this week I was reading a serious verse.

  208. I often pick him up,

  209. sometimes late in the evening.

  210. It's lovely to have this very clear mind,

  211. that your mind is feeling muddy and confused.

  212. If you'd gone to Buddha and asked him,

  213. are you the son of Brahma?

  214. He would have said,

  215. my son, you're still in the veil of illusion.

  216. If you'd gone to Socrates and asked,

  217. are you zeaths?

  218. He would have laughed at you.

  219. Listen to this.

  220. If you'd gone to Mohammed and asked,

  221. are you Allah?

  222. He would first rent his clothes,

  223. and then cut your head off.

  224. Which is probably why a lot of working class young men

  225. in this country like Islam,

  226. because that's how it deals with its opponents.

  227. If you'd asked Confucius,

  228. are you heaven?

  229. I think he would have probably replied,

  230. remarks which are not in accordance with nature,

  231. are in bad taste.

  232. The idea of a great moral teacher saying what Christ said,

  233. or doing what he did,

  234. is out of the question.

  235. In my opinion,

  236. the only person who can say the sort of things

  237. is either God or a complete lunatic

  238. suffering from that form of delusion

  239. which undermines the whole mind of man.

  240. He was never regarded as a mere moral teacher.

  241. He did not produce that effect on any of the people who met him.

  242. He produced only three effects,

  243. hatred, terror,

  244. and adoration.

  245. There was no trace of people

  246. expressing mild approval.

  247. When I first read that some years ago,

  248. I thought,

  249. no, that's not quite right.

  250. It's apathy,

  251. terror,

  252. and adoration.

  253. But now,

  254. I've come back to the original.

  255. Hatred.

  256. Yes, hatred.

  257. We're beginning to see that,

  258. aren't we,

  259. in our culture.

  260. Not apathy,

  261. but hatred.

  262. Hatred of what he stands for.

  263. Hatred of his moral stand.

  264. Hatred of his claims to be the only way to God.

  265. Well, now we come to the crunch

  266. of what I want to say tonight.

  267. So, if you've not been paying attention,

  268. please be with me now.

  269. We Christians,

  270. like everyone else,

  271. unlike the Lord,

  272. are helpless

  273. in the face of these great

  274. universal destructive forces.

  275. Because we believe in Christ,

  276. because we've received and rested

  277. in Jesus Christ,

  278. as the children were taught just now.

  279. And I trust that every one of us here

  280. has received him

  281. and rests in him.

  282. We can't opt out of tsunamis.

  283. We can't opt out of the world of terror

  284. that is all around us.

  285. And we're warned

  286. that some of these young men

  287. are coming back to this country

  288. determined to do ill.

  289. And we can't avoid

  290. incurable sickness and death.

  291. Every one of us will die.

  292. So, how are we believers

  293. more privileged than the unbelievers?

  294. Well, in a sense,

  295. sharing a common humanity,

  296. we are not.

  297. We live in this present evil age

  298. and therefore these great

  299. destructive forces

  300. are destructive in our lives too.

  301. Nevertheless,

  302. certain great blessings are ours.

  303. And this is where I want to ask you

  304. to recall these,

  305. if you can,

  306. in the midst of a very destructive

  307. and evil world.

  308. We've been given

  309. at least three privileges

  310. that the unbeliever

  311. doesn't have

  312. faced with these destructive forces

  313. all around us.

  314. The first great privilege

  315. that we've been given

  316. in this fallen world,

  317. full of destruction and evil,

  318. is we have been given

  319. understanding.

  320. And this understanding here

  321. in Mark

  322. lies actually in chapter 3,

  323. but I want you to wait a minute

  324. before I tell you what it is.

  325. I want to mention,

  326. first of all,

  327. a man called Mr. Christopher Mayhew,

  328. who was the father

  329. of one of the girls

  330. who came to us

  331. some years ago

  332. at St. Helens.

  333. He was a very fine man,

  334. an agnostic,

  335. but thoughtful.

  336. He was actually

  337. Secretary of the Navy

  338. for a while.

  339. I think you would call him

  340. not an atheist,

  341. but a questioning atheist,

  342. agnostic.

  343. And I recall him

  344. articulating

  345. the fundamental case

  346. for agnosticism,

  347. which is worth, I think,

  348. getting clear.

  349. What the agnostic,

  350. with a certain amount

  351. of goodwill,

  352. will say to us

  353. is something like this.

  354. You Christians say

  355. God is all-powerful.

  356. You Christians say

  357. that God is all-loving,

  358. and we say yes,

  359. yes, we do say that.

  360. But if this is so,

  361. Mr. Mayhew said,

  362. and many follow him,

  363. it is inexplicable

  364. that he does not

  365. abolish those things

  366. that destroy

  367. human happiness.

  368. Therefore, he says,

  369. I must conclude,

  370. since he does not

  371. do this,

  372. and these destructive

  373. forces are still

  374. in the world,

  375. and God seems to do

  376. nothing about them,

  377. he is asleep in the boat.

  378. I conclude,

  379. if he is all-powerful,

  380. as you say,

  381. then he is not

  382. all-loving.

  383. And if he is all-loving,

  384. then he is not

  385. all-powerful.

  386. And from this dilemma,

  387. said Mr. Mayhew,

  388. there is no escape.

  389. It is quite a powerful

  390. attitude,

  391. and thousands of people

  392. in our country

  393. have got stuck there.

  394. Now, the answer lies

  395. in chapter 3.

  396. The fact that all such men,

  397. however clever,

  398. fail to take into consideration.

  399. And I am not going to ask you

  400. to look at it,

  401. because I think everybody

  402. knows what happens

  403. in Mark chapter 3.

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  404. And that is that the

  405. people of God

  406. reject their Lord,

  407. their Messiah,

  408. their Savior.

  409. And we now live,

  410. therefore,

  411. in a Christ-rejecting world.

  412. It is more than

  413. a Christ-rejecting world,

  414. he has rejected them.

  415. Chapter 3 is taken up

  416. with the fact that

  417. Christ has rejected

  418. the people who have

  419. rejected him,

  420. and that he is making

  421. a completely new start

  422. in the world,

  423. and therefore he appoints

  424. 12 apostles

  425. on which he is going

  426. to build his new church

  427. and his new universe.

  428. And therefore,

  429. from chapter 3 onwards,

  430. we have a remarkable

  431. picture in Mark's gospel

  432. of how this new universe

  433. is going to be brought

  434. into being.

  435. I think Mark is the only

  436. gospel who brings

  437. the rejection of Christ

  438. right down to the

  439. beginning of his story,

  440. rather than at the end.

  441. So, when we get to

  442. chapter 4,

  443. we ask the question,

  444. as these 12 men

  445. go into the world,

  446. to start to build

  447. a new church,

  448. which is going to be

  449. the new Jerusalem,

  450. which is going to be

  451. the new heaven

  452. and the new earth.

  453. What is the weapon,

  454. what is the equipment

  455. that God gives them?

  456. And you know

  457. the answer to that.

  458. In chapter 4,

  459. the three parables

  460. of the ser,

  461. he gives them

  462. the seed of the word

  463. of God,

  464. the power of the gospel.

  465. That is all that

  466. he gives them,

  467. but it is sufficient

  468. for them to begin

  469. to build a new world.

  470. But,

  471. what does he give them

  472. after that,

  473. in this world

  474. which is under judgment?

  475. Though it's a restrained judgment,

  476. our world is under judgment,

  477. it's a world marked

  478. by frustration,

  479. by turmoil,

  480. by suffering,

  481. by all these things

  482. that we've been thinking about.

  483. Well, we've been given

  484. understanding.

  485. We've been given

  486. understanding that

  487. the reason why

  488. this world is as it is,

  489. is that it is

  490. a world that has

  491. rejected Christ.

  492. He is here by

  493. his Holy Spirit

  494. amongst us,

  495. thank God,

  496. but he,

  497. as we've sung just now,

  498. is at the right hand

  499. of God.

  500. When we speak of Christ,

  501. we will never talk

  502. too literally

  503. of Christ being here.

  504. We talk of Christ

  505. on the cross,

  506. we talk of Christ

  507. at the throne of God,

  508. we talk of Christ

  509. coming at the last day.

  510. But we mustn't talk

  511. of the real presence

  512. of Christ here now.

  513. He's here by his Spirit,

  514. but he himself bodily

  515. is at the right hand

  516. of God.

  517. And because this world

  518. has said no

  519. to its Creator,

  520. and because the people

  521. of God said no

  522. to their Messiah,

  523. we must live in a world

  524. which is under

  525. the judgment

  526. of Almighty God

  527. because of our attitude

  528. towards his beloved Son.

  529. We have been given

  530. that understanding.

  531. therefore,

  532. when we open

  533. our daily paper,

  534. but of course we don't

  535. now because we all

  536. have these wonderful

  537. machines that we don't

  538. have to buy a paper

  539. any longer.

  540. But whatever you do,

  541. whenever you listen

  542. to what's happening

  543. in the world,

  544. I don't know how you do it.

  545. It's all very marvelous,

  546. isn't it?

  547. The way we can listen

  548. as soon as we should

  549. be able to listen

  550. to the news

  551. on our watches,

  552. I'm told.

  553. Whatever you do

  554. to listen to what

  555. is happening in the world,

  556. you have a clue

  557. that other people

  558. do not have.

  559. that these awful things

  560. that make you tremble

  561. and step back

  562. and say,

  563. how could it be

  564. like this in Sudan?

  565. How could it be

  566. like this in Libya

  567. at the moment?

  568. Which is a hell hole.

  569. How could it be

  570. like this in Iraq?

  571. I know Christians

  572. working in Iraq,

  573. I know Christians

  574. working in Sudan,

  575. you probably do the same.

  576. They're living in places

  577. which in many ways

  578. mark a hell on earth.

  579. But they have the clue

  580. and you have the clue

  581. as to why God

  582. allows these things

  583. to continue.

  584. Because it is a mark

  585. of a world

  586. under the displeasure

  587. of a God

  588. whose son we have

  589. rejected.

  590. And we cannot live

  591. in this world

  592. without realizing it

  593. and knowing that

  594. his hand is upon us

  595. for judgment.

  596. This is the explanation

  597. of all the destructive

  598. forces of nature,

  599. the destructive forces

  600. of the devil in our world,

  601. lies and murder,

  602. and the destructive forces

  603. of incurable sickness

  604. and death.

  605. They all flow

  606. from our rejection

  607. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  608. And we Christians

  609. first and foremost

  610. have been given

  611. an understanding.

  612. It's a wonderful thing

  613. to have, isn't it?

  614. A clue.

  615. We don't know everything,

  616. of course.

  617. But we do have this clue.

  618. We do have an understanding

  619. of why God

  620. acts as he does

  621. in judgment

  622. as well as salvation.

  623. We do tremble.

  624. We ought to tremble

  625. because of these facts.

  626. As the world goes by,

  627. hardly aware

  628. of this at all

  629. and yet suffering

  630. because of it.

  631. Yes, a God

  632. who is all-loving

  633. and a God

  634. who is all-powerful,

  635. but a God

  636. who is righteous

  637. and will not allow

  638. a world that has

  639. rejected his son

  640. and crucified him

  641. to continue gaily

  642. as though nothing

  643. had happened.

  644. We have been

  645. given understanding.

  646. Secondly,

  647. we Christians

  648. have this

  649. extraordinary privilege

  650. that we've been

  651. given a task

  652. to do.

  653. I'm not thinking

  654. of being a pastor

  655. or a preacher

  656. or anything of that kind.

  657. You'll find this task

  658. in chapter 5,

  659. verse 18.

  660. I love this little part

  661. at the end of the story.

  662. It's a fairly

  663. unsettling thing

  664. to have Jesus around

  665. as you may have known

  666. in your own life.

  667. And the people

  668. decided to ask him

  669. to leave their region,

  670. verse 17.

  671. That's a picture

  672. of our world, really.

  673. And as he was

  674. getting into the boat,

  675. the man who had been

  676. possessed with demons

  677. begged him

  678. that he might be with him.

  679. And Jesus did not

  680. permit him,

  681. but said to him,

  682. Go home to your friends

  683. and tell them

  684. how much the Lord

  685. has done for you

  686. and how he said

  687. mercy on you.

  688. And he went away

  689. and proclaimed it.

  690. This is one of the

  691. very rare cases

  692. in the early part

  693. of Mark's gospel

  694. when Jesus is in

  695. heathen territory,

  696. the cities of the

  697. Decapolis.

  698. It's one more of those

  699. signs in early Mark

  700. that the Gentiles

  701. are one day

  702. to be reached

  703. with the truth

  704. from a remarkable

  705. early sign.

  706. It represents a world

  707. that rejects Jesus

  708. and yet,

  709. what happens?

  710. He sends the man

  711. who's been wonderfully

  712. liberated to be a witness

  713. amongst them.

  714. It's just one of those

  715. lovely little touches

  716. that there the world

  717. rejects him,

  718. God is continually

  719. sending those

  720. who experience

  721. his mercy

  722. to go and tell

  723. the heathen,

  724. the Gentiles,

  725. what God has done

  726. for them.

  727. That's your job

  728. and my job.

  729. Yes, no,

  730. pastors aren't

  731. accepted from this.

  732. Pastors aren't allowed

  733. just to go around

  734. preaching as though

  735. they didn't have

  736. any part in it.

  737. All of us

  738. are to go back

  739. to our own people

  740. and tell them

  741. what God has done

  742. in having mercy

  743. upon us.

  744. Isn't that a great

  745. and wonderful ministry?

  746. That's the task

  747. of every single Christian,

  748. old or young.

  749. We've been given

  750. a deep understanding

  751. of why the world

  752. is as it is

  753. and we've been given

  754. a task of what

  755. we are to do

  756. in this heathen world

  757. and amongst

  758. heathen churches.

  759. Everywhere,

  760. in the darkness,

  761. God commands

  762. his lights

  763. to shine.

  764. That's what lights

  765. are for in the darkness.

  766. And I would say

  767. the darkness

  768. should not surprise you.

  769. And the fact

  770. that God lights

  771. people's lives

  772. so that they can

  773. go and be a light

  774. in that world

  775. shouldn't surprise us

  776. either.

  777. God has given

  778. us understanding.

  779. He's given us

  780. a task,

  781. every one of us,

  782. in this heathen,

  783. godless world.

  784. And thirdly,

  785. God has given us

  786. confidence in

  787. his beloved son.

  788. What a lovely,

  789. lovely lesson that was.

  790. We adults need it

  791. just as much

  792. as the children.

  793. What is the first

  794. work of God

  795. the Holy Spirit?

  796. It is to uplift

  797. Christ so that

  798. we put our trust

  799. in him.

  800. A saving faith

  801. is a gift of God.

  802. To believe in

  803. Christ as Lord

  804. in the midst

  805. of a heathen world

  806. is because the

  807. Holy Spirit

  808. is a work in you.

  809. Do you believe

  810. in Christ

  811. with all your

  812. heart?

  813. Then the Holy Spirit

  814. is a work in you.

  815. That is his

  816. particular joy.

  817. Now that's the

  818. force, isn't it,

  819. of verse 40

  820. in chapter 4.

  821. Why are you

  822. so frightened?

  823. Do you

  824. have no faith?

  825. Have you no faith

  826. any longer?

  827. Are you not,

  828. as we were taught

  829. just now,

  830. are you not

  831. resting in faith?

  832. No, they're not

  833. resting in faith

  834. at all.

  835. Why?

  836. Because he's asleep.

  837. And therefore

  838. they say these

  839. words that the

  840. other gospel

  841. writers don't

  842. like very much.

  843. Don't you

  844. care for us?

  845. Well, that's

  846. typical of all

  847. of us, isn't it?

  848. Every one of us

  849. has said in

  850. moments of despair

  851. or difficult,

  852. Lord, don't you

  853. care?

  854. And not Jesus

  855. says, has your

  856. faith run out

  857. already?

  858. Don't you care

  859. even though I

  860. seem to be asleep?

  861. And that's often

  862. the case, isn't it?

  863. When these crises

  864. happen in our

  865. life and we

  866. cry out to God,

  867. it seems as though

  868. the heavens are

  869. brass and the

  870. Jesus is asleep.

  871. And they don't

  872. trust him.

  873. And they're

  874. frightened.

  875. And we're

  876. frightened too.

  877. The lesson

  878. today for the

  879. children is a

  880. lesson for all

  881. of us.

  882. It is receiving

  883. Christ, but it's

  884. more than that.

  885. It's resting in

  886. him.

  887. Well, we mustn't

  888. be surprised.

  889. These were

  890. experienced fishermen.

  891. And they knew

  892. all about storms

  893. and squalls and

  894. forced ten winds

  895. and all the rest

  896. of it.

  897. And they knew

  898. that they were

  899. dying and

  900. perishing.

  901. And therefore

  902. they cry out,

  903. don't you care?

  904. And so do we.

  905. And we receive

  906. the rebuke.

  907. Why are you

  908. afraid?

  909. Are you still

  910. really unbelieving?

  911. And that's the

  912. message, isn't it,

  913. of chapter 5,

  914. verse 36.

  915. Your daughter

  916. stayed.

  917. Why trouble the

  918. teacher any

  919. further?

  920. It's quite

  921. useless.

  922. But overhearing

  923. what they

  924. said, Jesus

  925. said to the

  926. ruler of the

  927. synagogue, do

  928. not fear,

  929. only believe.

  930. Our precious

  931. and gracious

  932. God is saying

  933. that to us

  934. daily, isn't

  935. he?

  936. Don't be

  937. afraid, only

  938. believe.

  939. And we

  940. need that so

  941. much because

  942. we're so

  943. afraid.

  944. So, my

  945. dear Christian

  946. friends, this

  947. evening, it's a

  948. very simple

  949. message we have,

  950. isn't it?

  951. The message the

  952. children received

  953. in the trials

  954. that we

  955. experience in

  956. this present

  957. age.

  958. We can't opt

  959. out any more

  960. than the pagan

  961. can opt out.

  962. We're all in it

  963. together.

  964. But, as

  965. believers, we

  966. have understanding,

  967. we have a

  968. task to do,

  969. and we have a

  970. faith that should

  971. sustain us

  972. until the

  973. Lord returns.

  974. And then, if

  975. you know, in the

  976. book of

  977. Revelation, there

  978. will be no

  979. more sea.

  980. I always love

  981. that symbolism,

  982. because sea in

  983. the Bible is

  984. the symbol of

  985. primal chaos and

  986. the trials of

  987. the righteous.

  988. And there

  989. will be no

  990. more.

  991. And there

  992. will be no

  993. more Satan

  994. because he

  995. will be thrown

  996. into the

  997. lake of fire

  998. with the

  999. beast and

  1000. the false

  1001. prophet.

  1002. And best

  1003. of all, no

  1004. more sickness

  1005. and death,

  1006. no more

  1007. mourning, no

  1008. more crying

  1009. or pain.

  1010. The old

  1011. order passed

  1012. away.

  1013. What a

  1014. prospect,

  1015. isn't it?

  1016. We don't

  1017. have it now,

  1018. but we do

  1019. have understanding,

  1020. we do have a

  1021. work to do,

  1022. and we do

  1023. have saving

  1024. faith in which

  1025. we can rest.

  1026. Amen.

  1027. God bless you.

  1028. Let's pray.
