  1. Turn to Luke 22, verses 7-32.

    Luke 22:7–32

  2. So, there are three, I suppose, great, all-time great statements about Jesus as the Son of Man.

  3. ! And they're really good memory verses if you don't know them.

  4. The first one is that the Son of Man came to be served,

  5. came not to be served, but to serve and give His rights to run some of many.

  6. The second one is that the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.

  7. And the third great one I want to argue is the Son of Man came eating and drinking.

  8. The Son of Man came eating and drinking.

  9. And you might think, well, that's just because we're at the Lord's Sabbath tonight.

  10. But one of the great themes of Luke's Gospel is Jesus' love to eat and drink.

  11. So, in Luke's Gospel, there are about 16 occasions in Luke where you find Jesus eating and drinking in someone's house

  12. or talking at a feast of some sort.

  13. And tonight, this is the most famous meal of all time, isn't it?

  14. We call it the Last Supper.

  15. And it's here in Luke 22.

  16. Luke tells us, can you sit down verse 14.

  17. He took a cup and when he'd given thanks, he said,

  18. when he'd given thanks, he brought up, sorry, verse 14, isn't it?

  19. And when the hour came, he reclined at table and the apostles with him.

  20. And he said to them, I earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.

  21. For I tell you that I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.

  22. So the time has come.

  23. The hour has arrived and the apostles are with him.

  24. Now, as you read this, immediately, probably, a picture will come into your mind.

  25. Probably, I think it will.

  26. And it is that very, very famous scene of the Last Supper.

  27. It's a well-known piece of art, isn't it?

  28. The Lord's Supper is inspired great works of art,

  29. but one particular in the Lord's Supper by Leonardo da Vinci.

  30. Where Jesus is sitting in the middle of the table

  31. and he's got his disciples on either side of him.

  32. If you can see it, Google it when you get home.

  33. And you might know that when that was first painted,

  34. it was painted on the room of a monastery dining room.

  35. Unfortunately, the wall began to crumble because it was only made of some kind of dirt.

  36. And very soon, after the painting had been done, the wall began to crumble.

  37. Worse was to come.

  38. Some of the early friars cut a door through the wall where Jesus' feet were.

  39. And then later on, after that, he gave a storage chamber,

  40. then a stable, then a prison, and a barracks.

  41. And at one stage, there was restoration work that was done very, very carelessly.

  42. One artist in particular was so casual about the task that he gave James six fingers on one of his hands.

  43. It's a famous work of art,

  44. and yet it's been treated terribly down through the centuries.

  45. And not only has this scene in the upper room inspired that great painting,

  46. but this scene of the Lord's Supper has inspired a great intrigue.

  47. At least that painting has been the source of conspiracy theories.

  48. I don't want to spoil it for you, but if you've not yet read Dan Brown's book,

  49. you know, the Da Vinci Code,

  50. in fact, I will spoil it for you because it's not worth reading anyway.

  51. But in that book, Dan Brown argues that there is a conspiracy.

  52. And the clues to that conspiracy are found in Da Vinci's painting of the Last Supper.

  53. And the conspiracy is the search for the Holy Grail.

  54. The Holy Grail is not the cup,

  55. it's not the relic, it's not the cup that Jesus had in the upper room that he poured wine into.

  56. The Holy Grail is the bloodline of Jesus.

  57. So Jesus got married, according to Dan Brown.

  58. That is the conspiracy that the Catholic Church has been covering up, according to Dan Brown.

  59. There's absolutely no factual basis for it whatsoever.

  60. But he says Jesus married Mary Magdalene,

  61. and he actually has descendants in the world today,

  62. and there's a secret society.

  63. There's a secret society called the Priory of Zion,

  64. and it's their job in life to protect the descendants of Jesus in the world today.

  65. That is the conspiracy.

  66. So what is the reality tonight?

  67. What is the reality behind all that?

  68. What is the reality behind this famous work of ours?

  69. About the Last Supper?

  70. What does the Last Supper have to say to us tonight?

  71. Is there a conspiracy?

  72. Does Jesus have living descendants in the world today?

  73. And what is the secret of the Holy Grail?

  74. Well, we're going to look at the passage,

  75. and I want you to notice there is a conspiracy.

  76. Can you see it in verses 7 to 13?

  77. There is a conspiracy.

  78. If you don't think there's a conspiracy,

  79. you haven't read many detective novels, have you?

  80. Jesus tells his disciples from verse 7 onwards,

  81. go into the city, look out for a man carrying a water jug on his head.

  82. It's like saying, go to King's Cross railway station,

  83. look out for a man with the Times newspaper rolled up under one arm,

  84. and a carnation of his lapel.

  85. It's got that sort of feel.

  86. Look at verse 10.

  87. Look at verse 10.

  88. It's intriguing, isn't it?

  89. He says to him,

  90. Behold, when you've entered the city,

  91. a man carrying a jar of water will meet you.

  92. Follow him into the house that he enters.

  93. Tell the master of the house,

  94. and the teacher says to you,

  95. where is the guest room?

  96. Where I meet the Passover with my disciples.

  97. He will show you a large upper room furnished.

  98. Prepare it there.

  99. It's intriguing, isn't it?

  100. It's mysterious.

  101. Do you know what's the surprise?

  102. Look out for a man carrying a water jug.

  103. But in those days, you didn't see men carrying water jugs, did you?

  104. They still don't do that in that culture.

  105. That was a woman's job, they would say.

  106. I'm not saying it never happens,

  107. but it is an unusual sight

  108. to see a man carrying the water jug.

  109. It feels like, doesn't it, when you read that,

  110. it's got the sense of being a pre-arranged signal.

  111. Why?

  112. Why the secrecy?

  113. Why doesn't he just go to 25 King Solomon Street

  114. in the upstairs flat there,

  115. I booked a room for us.

  116. Why the secrecy?

  117. Well, because it's a security issue, isn't it?

  118. Jesus is a wanted man, we saw this morning.

  119. We saw.

  120. I've come in.

  121. There's a conspiracy.

  122. There's a conspiracy between the religious authorities

  123. and Judas Iscariot.

  124. We're told that in the opening verses we saw this morning.

  125. In fact, it's worse than that, isn't it?

  126. This conspiracy has its origins in hell.

  127. We're told there in verse 2

  128. that Satan entered into Judas,

  129. who was numbered among the twelve,

  130. and he went away with the chief priests

  131. and the temple police

  132. to see how he could hand them over to him.

  133. There is a conspiracy.

  134. There's a conspiracy to get rid of Jesus,

  135. and Jesus is having none of it.

  136. It's not that he's going to die,

  137. but he's not having Judas Iscariot

  138. and the chief priests calling the tomb

  139. and setting the time and the date

  140. of his death.

  141. Hell is conspiring to get rid of the Messiah.

  142. There's a conspiracy here.

  143. In fact, I want to argue

  144. that there are two conspiracies.

  145. You might want to talk to me about this afterwards

  146. if you think I've got it wrong.

  147. But I think there's a conspiracy of evil

  148. and there's a conspiracy of kindness.

  149. And there's a kindness to Judas.

  150. Jesus is protecting Judas.

  151. He is protecting Judas from himself

  152. right up to the last minute.

  153. Did you notice how later on in the evening,

  154. how Jesus refers in verse 22

  155. to the hand of the one who is betraying

  156. and who is at this table?

  157. He doesn't name and shame him.

  158. It is obvious as you read on

  159. that the disciples don't know

  160. who he's talking about.

  161. They begin to argue.

  162. They don't realize it's Judas.

  163. They begin to argue amongst themselves

  164. which of them it could be.

  165. Verse 23.

  166. Who is going to do this thing?

  167. No one is pointing the finger at Judas

  168. saying, well, I knew it was him.

  169. He always looked shifty.

  170. And it's almost as if Jesus

  171. is giving Judas time to think.

  172. He's giving Judas time

  173. to have second thoughts about this.

  174. He's giving him space for repentance

  175. right until the last minute.

  176. So there's two things happening.

  177. There is a conspiracy of evil

  178. which is sort of fueled from hell

  179. to get rid of Jesus.

  180. And yet there is a conspiracy of kindness,

  181. I think.

  182. And yet, woe to that man

  183. by whom he is betrayed.

  184. So there are two plans here.

  185. That is what I'm saying.

  186. There is Satan's plan and God's plan.

  187. There's a plan of destruction.

  188. And a plan of salvation.

  189. And Satan's schemes

  190. are in a mysterious way

  191. woven into God's plan

  192. and they are made to serve God's plan.

  193. Do you see that in verse 23?

  194. The Son of Man

  195. will go as it has been determined.

  196. Verse 22.

  197. So Jesus is going to die.

  198. It has been decided.

  199. It has been decided in the councils of eternity

  200. before the foundation of the world.

  201. The Lamb that was slain

  202. before the foundation of the world.

  203. It has been decided.

  204. The Son of Man will go

  205. as it has been determined.

  206. But woe to that man

  207. by whom he is betrayed.

  208. Now do you see those two things

  209. go together, don't they?

  210. Again, we saw this a couple of weeks ago

  211. in Proverbs.

  212. But think of the book of Job.

  213. Think of Satan

  214. wanting to destroy Job

  215. and question God

  216. and at the same time

  217. what you have in Job

  218. you have God working out his plans

  219. and actually using Satan.

  220. We don't live in a dualistic universe

  221. where good is versus evil

  222. and we don't know

  223. what is going to happen

  224. and who is going to win.

  225. God is sovereign.

  226. He can make

  227. He can make the wrath of men serve Him.

  228. He can bring the greatest good

  229. out of the most unimaginable evil.

  230. And they want to rid themselves

  231. of the Son of God.

  232. They want to crucify Jesus.

  233. And God is going to allow that to happen.

  234. And out of that

  235. out of the most unimaginable evil

  236. where the creatures kill the Creator.

  237. This is day sight.

  238. Out of the most unimaginable evil

  239. God is going to bring about the greatest good.

  240. To see.

  241. It's like the story of Joseph

  242. all over again, isn't it?

  243. His brothers sell him into slavery

  244. and eventually they're brought to Egypt

  245. because of the famine

  246. and they appear before Mice and Joseph.

  247. And they recognize who he is

  248. and they're scared stiff.

  249. And do you remember what Joseph says?

  250. He says you meant it for evil.

  251. They wanted to kill him.

  252. They wanted to get rid of him.

  253. They were jealous of him.

  254. They hated him.

  255. They thought they had got rid of him.

  256. And God says to them

  257. you meant it for evil

  258. but God meant it for good.

  259. To save many people.

  260. So while you were plotting

  261. and you were planning for others

  262. to get rid of me

  263. and you thought you'd got rid of me

  264. and throw me in the ditch

  265. all those things happened.

  266. I was falsely accused.

  267. I was thrown into prison.

  268. All those bad and evil things.

  269. God is not the author of them.

  270. But he takes them

  271. and he uses them.

  272. To carry out his purpose.

  273. It's the same in Acts 2, isn't it?

  274. Speaking of the same crowd

  275. that crucified Jesus

  276. 50 days later.

  277. The crowd that cried out

  278. in hysteria.

  279. Crucify him.

  280. Crucify him.

  281. Speaking to those same people.

  282. Peter says,

  283. Men of Israel,

  284. Jesus of Nazareth,

  285. the man of chastity to you

  286. by God

  287. with mighty works

  288. and wonders and signs.

  289. But God did through him

  290. in your midst

  291. as you yourselves know.

  292. That Jesus was delivered up

  293. according to the scriptures.

  294. According to the

  295. determinate counsel

  296. and foreknowledge of God.

  297. And you crucify him

  298. with lawless hands.

  299. See those two things?

  300. You killed him.

  301. God foreordained it.

  302. So here it is.

  303. Look at verse 53 of Luke 22.

  304. Jesus says to you,

  305. This is your hour.

  306. The power of darkness.

  307. There is this conspiracy of evil

  308. but in the midst of it

  309. there is God's glorious plan

  310. of salvation.

  311. So there is conspiracy

  312. but there is also

  313. community as well.

  314. Conspiracy and community.

  315. And it is something

  316. that struck me

  317. more than I have ever

  318. seen it before.

  319. It is not a secret society

  320. is it?

  321. It is not

  322. the Priory of Zion.

  323. It is not the physical

  324. descendants of Jesus

  325. through the line

  326. of Mary Magdalene

  327. as Dan Brown

  328. ludicrously suggests.

  329. It is the church.

  330. But do you see

  331. this community?

  332. Do you see

  333. how the church

  334. is pictured

  335. in the upper room?

  336. Sometimes we

  337. miss the obvious

  338. don't we?

  339. What is

  340. happening

  341. at the start

  342. of chapter 22?

  343. It is the Passover.

  344. What was the Passover?

  345. What happened

  346. at the Passover?

  347. It is a family

  348. occasion.

  349. It is a family

  350. occasion

  351. more than anything

  352. else

  353. was it?

  354. The Passover

  355. for the Jewish

  356. people was more

  357. of a family

  358. occasion than

  359. Christmas was

  360. for us.

  361. It is hard

  362. for many of us

  363. isn't it?

  364. We are away

  365. from our families

  366. on Christmas

  367. day.

  368. I like speaking

  369. to my parents

  370. apart from

  371. one day

  372. a year.

  373. I do not

  374. particularly

  375. speaking to

  376. them on

  377. Christmas

  378. day.

  379. Because you

  380. feel so far

  381. from them.

  382. And most of

  383. you try very

  384. hard to be

  385. with your

  386. family on

  387. Christmas

  388. day.

  389. And if that

  390. can't happen

  391. you are sad

  392. about it.

  393. Because Christmas

  394. lunch is a

  395. family occasion

  396. isn't it?

  397. That is our

  398. tradition.

  399. That is our

  400. culture.

  401. But even more

  402. so with the

  403. Passover.

  404. The whole

  405. family was

  406. gathered and

  407. the youngest

  408. member of

  409. the family

  410. would ask

  411. the questions.

  412. Why is

  413. this night

  414. more important

  415. than any

  416. other night

  417. dad?

  418. What happened

  419. to the

  420. lamb?

  421. Tell me

  422. about what

  423. happened in

  424. Israel.

  425. Why is

  426. the blood

  427. on the

  428. doors?

  429. What is

  430. it all

  431. about?

  432. And the

  433. family would

  434. be round

  435. the table

  436. passing

  437. dishes

  438. having a

  439. meal.

  440. And that

  441. is the

  442. interesting

  443. thing here

  444. isn't it?

  445. Jesus has

  446. the audacity

  447. to pull

  448. every single

  449. one of his

  450. disciples away

  451. from their

  452. families on

  453. Passover night.

  454. Doesn't he?

  455. And he is

  456. the one who

  457. is the head

  458. of this

  459. Passover meal

  460. and he's

  461. wanting them

  462. to celebrate

  463. this Passover

  464. with him.

  465. You see

  466. when he

  467. says I

  468. have eagerly

  469. desires to

  470. eat this

  471. Passover

  472. with you.

  473. In other

  474. words what I'm

  475. trying to

  476. say is that

  477. there's a

  478. new family

  479. being brought

  480. into existence

  481. here at

  482. this table

  483. because the

  484. cross of

  485. Jesus,

  486. that's why,

  487. we say

  488. blood is

  489. thicker than

  490. water.

  491. Well the

  492. blood of

  493. Jesus brings

  494. into being a

  495. new family

  496. but grace

  497. is even

  498. stronger than

  499. blood.

  500. And so

  501. here is the

  502. family of

  503. Jesus.

  504. The beginning

  505. of this new

  506. family.

  507. But you

  508. notice what

  509. happens around

  510. the table

  511. because only

  512. Luke,

  513. the account of

  514. the last

  515. supper is in

  516. all four

  517. Gospels,

  518. but Luke is

  519. the only one

  520. who makes it

  521. clear to us

  522. that there's

  523. this dispute.

  524. There's this

  525. bickering

  526. that breaks

  527. out.

  528. It's just like

  529. Christmas

  530. lunch,

  531. isn't it?

  532. You know

  533. it's like

  534. Christmas

  535. lunch in

  536. the family

  537. is marvellous

  538. isn't it

  539. for the first

  540. course?

  541. And then

  542. somebody says

  543. something and

  544. a dispute

  545. breaks out.

  546. It happens

  547. every Christmas

  548. lunch with

  549. the extended

  550. family in

  551. verse 24.

  552. Luke makes

  553. it clear.

  554. And this

  555. dispute did

  556. not happen

  557. outside the

  558. room.

  559. It didn't

  560. happen a

  561. couple of

  562. days later.

  563. It actually

  564. happened around

  565. the table at

  566. the Passover

  567. meal.

  568. This dispute

  569. about who

  570. would be the

  571. greatest.

  572. And what

  573. Jesus says is

  574. very, very

  575. significant because

  576. it actually

  577. defines for us

  578. what kind of

  579. community he is

  580. bringing into

  581. existence.

  582. notice what he

  583. says in

  584. verse 25.

  585. He says

  586. the kings

  587. of the Gentiles

  588. exercise lordship

  589. over them

  590. and those in

  591. authority over

  592. them are

  593. called benefactors.

  594. They dominate

  595. but verse 26

  596. not so with

  597. you.

  598. It shall not

  599. be amongst

  600. you.

  601. You are not

  602. to have

  603. benefactors.

  604. You are to

  605. be benefactors.

  606. Let me explain

  607. what I mean by

  608. that.

  609. The kings of

  610. the Gentiles

  611. they dominate

  612. they lord it

  613. over.

  614. They are

  615. called

  616. benefactors.

  617. There is this

  618. stark contrast

  619. between the

  620. way the things

  621. are done in

  622. our society

  623. and the way

  624. things are done

  625. in the world

  626. and the way

  627. that Jesus

  628. wants them to

  629. be.

  630. How does the

  631. world organise

  632. itself?

  633. How does your

  634. office organise

  635. itself?

  636. There is a

  637. pecking order.

  638. Isn't that?

  639. That is what

  640. Jesus is referring

  641. to.

  642. When he talks

  643. benefactors it

  644. is this

  645. Greek or

  646. Roman

  647. patronage

  648. culture.

  649. So those

  650. higher up

  651. in the

  652. socio-economic

  653. order they

  654. would give

  655. to help

  656. those lower

  657. down.

  658. And so if

  659. you wanted

  660. to live

  661. and survive

  662. in society

  663. you would

  664. look for

  665. a benefactor.

  666. And you

  667. would look

  668. for a

  669. patron who

  670. will champion

  671. your cause

  672. to look out

  673. for you.

  674. That is the

  675. way it

  676. works.

  677. That is how

  678. you survived.

  679. That is how

  680. society operated.

  681. And then you

  682. owed them for

  683. the rest of

  684. your life.

  685. And Jesus

  686. says that is

  687. not how you

  688. should be.

  689. That is not

  690. the way I

  691. want my

  692. society to

  693. be organised.

  694. It is not

  695. the way my

  696. world works.

  697. It is not

  698. scratch my

  699. back and I

  700. will scratch

  701. yours.

  702. It is not so

  703. much what you

  704. know as who

  705. you know.

  706. That is how the

  707. world works.

  708. And Jesus

  709. says it shall

  710. not be so

  711. among you.

  712. people.

  713. But it is

  714. still like that.

  715. We want to

  716. be seen with

  717. the rich and

  718. the powerful,

  719. with the bold

  720. and the

  721. beautiful,

  722. with the

  723. popular and

  724. the gorgeous.

  725. And Jesus

  726. says it will

  727. not be like

  728. that in my

  729. kingdom.

  730. That way of

  731. thinking goes

  732. out of the

  733. window when

  734. you come to

  735. the cross.

  736. Isn't that

  737. what Paul

  738. says in

  739. 2 Corinthians?

  740. Where he

  741. says we

  742. used to view

  743. human beings,

  744. we used to

  745. view one

  746. another in that

  747. kind of way.

  748. We even used

  749. to think of

  750. Jesus in that

  751. kind of way,

  752. but not

  753. anymore.

  754. Now there is

  755. a new

  756. creation.

  757. There is a

  758. new way of

  759. relating.

  760. Everything

  761. is new now.

  762. The old

  763. has passed.

  764. The new

  765. has come.

  766. That's what

  767. Jesus says in

  768. verse 29,

  769. doesn't he?

  770. And I

  771. assign to

  772. you as

  773. my father

  774. assigned to

  775. me a

  776. kingdom.

  777. He is

  778. conferring a

  779. kingdom on

  780. these people.

  781. He is

  782. conferring a

  783. kingdom that

  784. is not about

  785. power or

  786. about

  787. recognition.

  788. And

  789. status and

  790. money is

  791. about dying

  792. to serve.

  793. It's about

  794. laying down

  795. your life

  796. for others.

  797. It's the

  798. people of

  799. the cross.

  800. And so

  801. do you see

  802. there's

  803. community here

  804. isn't there

  805. around this

  806. table?

  807. Radically

  808. new community

  809. appearing.

  810. And just

  811. one other

  812. thing,

  813. there's

  814. something else

  815. which Luke

  816. does which

  817. is quite

  818. striking.

  819. And you

  820. see it in

  821. the context

  822. of this

  823. meal.

  824. Look at

  825. verse 31.

  826. It's still

  827. in the

  828. upper room.

  829. It's part

  830. of the

  831. same meal.

  832. It's part

  833. of the

  834. same event.

  835. We'll

  836. look at it

  837. next Sunday

  838. morning.

  839. He says,

  840. Simon,

  841. Simon,

  842. behold,

  843. Satan has

  844. demanded

  845. to have

  846. you.

  847. That he

  848. might

  849. sit you

  850. like wheat.

  851. But I

  852. have prayed

  853. for you

  854. that your

  855. faith may

  856. not fail.

  857. Now why

  858. does he

  859. bother to

  860. tell you

  861. that?

  862. Why does

  863. Luke put

  864. that there?

  865. At this

  866. table,

  867. around this

  868. meal?

  869. Well I

  870. think it's

  871. because of

  872. this.

  873. I think

  874. Simon Peter

  875. is going

  876. to be the

  877. new leader

  878. of the

  879. community.

  880. Jesus has

  881. already

  882. appointed him

  883. if you

  884. like as

  885. the chief

  886. apostle.

  887. He's going

  888. to become

  889. the new

  890. leader of

  891. that

  892. community.

  893. And

  894. leadership in

  895. the church

  896. is not

  897. the same

  898. as

  899. leadership

  900. in the

  901. world.

  902. And

  903. Jesus

  904. doesn't

  905. choose

  906. Simon Peter

  907. to lead

  908. his

  909. church

  910. because

  911. he's

  912. strong

  913. and

  914. powerful

  915. and

  916. bold

  917. and

  918. beautiful

  919. and

  920. rich

  921. and

  922. influential.

  923. He's as

  924. weak as

  925. water.

  926. He's

  927. weak.

  928. In

  929. my

  930. kingdom,

  931. who are

  932. the

  933. leaders?

  934. Says

  935. Jesus.

  936. What are

  937. they like?

  938. They're

  939. people like

  940. Peter who

  941. repent.

  942. There are

  943. people like

  944. Peter who

  945. are conscious

  946. most of

  947. their weakness

  948. and their

  949. failing and

  950. their utter

  951. need of

  952. divine

  953. grace and

  954. that is

  955. the

  956. community

  957. of the

  958. cross.

  959. And

  960. it's

  961. brought

  962. into

  963. being

  964. in

  965. the

  966. upper

  967. room

  968. around

  969. the

  970. Lord's

  971. table.

  972. Do you

  973. remember what

  974. Jesus said

  975. as he took

  976. the cup?

  977. He said

  978. this is

  979. the new

  980. covenant.

  981. Just as

  982. in the

  983. Old

  984. Testament

  985. when God

  986. brought the

  987. Israelites

  988. out of

  989. Egypt

  990. on that

  991. Passover

  992. night

  993. when God

  994. brought the

  995. Hebrews

  996. out of

  997. Egypt

  998. what did

  999. he do?

  1000. He

  1001. brought

  1002. them to

  1003. Mount

  1004. Sinai

  1005. where the

  1006. Ten

  1007. Commandments

  1008. were given

  1009. and God

  1010. entered into

  1011. a formal

  1012. relationship

  1013. with Israel.

  1014. Mount Sinai

  1015. is like

  1016. the giving

  1017. of the

  1018. constitution

  1019. to Israel.

  1020. Before they

  1021. were a bunch

  1022. of slaves

  1023. who had been

  1024. ransomed from

  1025. Egypt and

  1026. God gathered

  1027. them together

  1028. at the foot of

  1029. Mount Sinai

  1030. and he said

  1031. he entered into

  1032. a covenant

  1033. with them

  1034. and said

  1035. from now on

  1036. you are a

  1037. holy nation.

  1038. You are my

  1039. treasured

  1040. possession.

  1041. You are my

  1042. chosen people.

  1043. And that was the

  1044. old covenant

  1045. with Israel.

  1046. Israel.

  1047. And now

  1048. Jesus

  1049. in this

  1050. upper room

  1051. gathers

  1052. this

  1053. rag tag

  1054. and bob

  1055. tail group

  1056. of followers.

  1057. People like

  1058. Simon Peter

  1059. who is not

  1060. a strong

  1061. man at

  1062. all.

  1063. He gathers

  1064. around him

  1065. these people

  1066. he takes

  1067. the cup

  1068. and he

  1069. says now

  1070. this is

  1071. the new

  1072. covenant

  1073. in my

  1074. blood

  1075. shed

  1076. for you

  1077. shed

  1078. for many.

  1079. Peter

  1080. picks up

  1081. on his

  1082. letter

  1083. and he

  1084. says

  1085. once you

  1086. were not

  1087. a people

  1088. but now

  1089. you are

  1090. the people

  1091. of God

  1092. and you

  1093. are a

  1094. holy nation

  1095. and a

  1096. royal priesthood

  1097. and you

  1098. are God's

  1099. chosen people

  1100. so there

  1101. is a

  1102. conspiracy

  1103. isn't there?

  1104. Satan

  1105. Judas

  1106. chief

  1107. priest

  1108. Pontius

  1109. Pilate

  1110. and unbeknown

  1111. to them

  1112. they are

  1113. doing God's

  1114. perfect way

  1115. and they are

  1116. fulfilling the

  1117. scriptures

  1118. that's not to

  1119. excuse them

  1120. they are not

  1121. pawns in a

  1122. chess scheme

  1123. it was unfortunate

  1124. wasn't it

  1125. on that great

  1126. evening we had

  1127. Richard Borgen

  1128. on it

  1129. talking about

  1130. John's gospel

  1131. he kept referring

  1132. himself to

  1133. I'm just a

  1134. pawn in

  1135. God's

  1136. game

  1137. I wanted

  1138. to shout

  1139. to him

  1140. but you're

  1141. not

  1142. you're

  1143. not

  1144. you're

  1145. not

  1146. pawn

  1147. the bible

  1148. never ever

  1149. talks about

  1150. human beings

  1151. that way

  1152. and we

  1153. must never

  1154. do that

  1155. they're

  1156. responsible

  1157. for their

  1158. actions

  1159. and yet

  1160. through God

  1161. God is

  1162. conspiring

  1163. with them

  1164. to save

  1165. the world

  1166. and yes

  1167. there's a

  1168. bloodline

  1169. it's a

  1170. society

  1171. but it's not

  1172. a secret

  1173. society

  1174. it's a

  1175. community

  1176. but it's not

  1177. a secret

  1178. community

  1179. it's not

  1180. the priory

  1181. of Zion

  1182. to the

  1183. physical

  1184. descendants

  1185. of Jesus

  1186. no it's

  1187. to the

  1188. church

  1189. the new

  1190. covenant

  1191. community

  1192. it's those

  1193. who've been

  1194. redeemed

  1195. by the blood

  1196. of the lamb

  1197. and that leads

  1198. me to the

  1199. last thing

  1200. there's symbolism

  1201. here isn't

  1202. there

  1203. symbolism

  1204. you don't

  1205. have to make

  1206. it up

  1207. because it's

  1208. here

  1209. you don't

  1210. have to

  1211. write a

  1212. novel about

  1213. it

  1214. because it's

  1215. here

  1216. and there

  1217. is real

  1218. suspense

  1219. and there

  1220. is real

  1221. mystery

  1222. here at

  1223. the last

  1224. supper

  1225. and there

  1226. is profound

  1227. symbolism

  1228. Jesus took

  1229. bread

  1230. and he took

  1231. a cup

  1232. he said

  1233. this is my

  1234. body

  1235. this is my

  1236. blood

  1237. the bread and

  1238. wine are

  1239. symbols

  1240. they are

  1241. powerful

  1242. symbols

  1243. I don't

  1244. know if you've

  1245. ever been to

  1246. an auction

  1247. you've done

  1248. that

  1249. but you need

  1250. to know if you

  1251. go to an auction

  1252. there are pre-arranged

  1253. gestures aren't there

  1254. at an auction

1255. the raising of an eyebrow

1256. the scratching of your nose

1257. then you might find yourself going home with a heap of junk

  1258. right

  1259. you do it

1260. or going home with something more than you bargained for

1261. because if the auctioneer sees your sign

  1262. your pre-arranged signal

1263. he will accept your bid

1264. and the hammer will come down

  1265. and wonder

  1266. going going

  1267. gone

1268. to the man with the nervous twitch at the back

1269. and you become the proud owner of something that you didn't really want

  1270. your signal

  1271. in that auction

  1272. in that context

1273. binds you to pay the price

  1274. do you understand that?

1275. and so here we are

  1276. the night

  1277. he was betrayed

  1278. Jesus took bread

  1279. and took wine

1280. that is exactly what Jesus is doing

  1281. he is not saying

  1282. hey Presco

  1283. this bread

  1284. has now become

  1285. my physical body

  1286. that is nonsense

  1287. it is superstitious nonsense

  1288. it is still bread

  1289. it is still wine

  1290. they are powerful

  1291. powerful symbols

  1292. they are tokens

  1293. of what Christ

  1294. is about to do

  1295. this is the night

  1296. he was betrayed

  1297. this is the day

1298. before he went to the cross

1299. and Jesus takes the bread

  1300. and the wine

  1301. this is my body

  1302. broken for you

1303. and this is my blood

  1304. poured out

  1305. for you

  1306. do you see Jesus

  1307. is symbolically

  1308. laying down

  1309. his life there

  1310. as he pours

  1311. the wine

  1312. into the cup

  1313. he is pouring

  1314. out his life

  1315. in the upper room

  1316. and what the bread

  1317. and wine

  1318. symbolise

  1319. Jesus is going to

  1320. actualise

  1321. the next day

  1322. and that becomes

  1323. even more powerful

  1324. when you realise

  1325. what is missing

  1326. from the table

  1327. what is missing

  1328. from the table

1329. it is the Passover meal

  1330. all four Gospels

  1331. draw attention to this

1332. and again it is so obvious

1333. that you and I miss it

  1334. what is missing

  1335. from the Passover table

  1336. the lamb

  1337. by its absence

  1338. it is conspicuous

  1339. isn't it

  1340. there is no lamb

  1341. so imagine

1342. you come to my house

  1343. for Christmas day

  1344. and I say

1345. we are going to have

  1346. a great Christmas lunch

  1347. a traditional Christmas lunch

  1348. and you arrive

1349. and there is no turkey

  1350. it is unthinkable

  1351. but what about

  1352. Passover without a lamb

  1353. the truth is this

  1354. there is no lamb

1355. that is on the table

  1356. because the lamb

  1357. of God

  1358. is at the table

  1359. this is my body

  1360. this is my blood

  1361. he says

  1362. why does Jesus

  1363. have to die

  1364. why does

1365. there have to be a lamb

1366. why does there have to be

  1367. a sacrifice

  1368. well think about it

  1369. is it possible

  1370. to forgive

  1371. without suffering

  1372. is it possible

  1373. to forgive

  1374. without suffering

  1375. so imagine

  1376. you have been hurt

1377. some of you have been

  1378. you have been

  1379. harmed in some way

  1380. somebody has really

  1381. wronged you

  1382. somebody has betrayed you

  1383. there is only

1384. two things you can do

  1385. you can be hurt

  1386. and you can retaliate

  1387. you can resent

  1388. that person

  1389. who has wronged you

1390. and what they have done to you

1391. and if you do that

  1392. you suffer don't you

  1393. you lose

  1394. you allow that person

  1395. to hurt you

  1396. over and over

  1397. and over again

  1398. and the evil

1399. that has been done to you

  1400. actually enters into you

  1401. and it leads away

  1402. at you

  1403. and you lose

  1404. evil times

  1405. before you can choose

  1406. to forgive

  1407. sounds so easy

  1408. doesn't it

  1409. but it's far easier

  1410. to say than done

  1411. isn't it

  1412. to forgive

  1413. we all know that

  1414. so somebody has said

  1415. that the currency

  1416. of words

  1417. is not

  1418. the currency

  1419. of forgiveness

  1420. it's quite helpful

  1421. the currency of words

  1422. is not the currency

  1423. of forgiveness

  1424. actions are

1425. and if you've been hurt

  1426. really hurt

  1427. to forgive that person

  1428. it's a costly thing

  1429. isn't it

  1430. you can choose

  1431. to forgive

  1432. you can choose

  1433. to allow

  1434. the good

  1435. to overcome

  1436. the evil

  1437. but you still suffer

  1438. in doing that

  1439. because it's not

  1440. it's not as easy

1441. as it just to say

  1442. I forgive you

1443. and if it's like that

  1444. for us

  1445. how hard it is

  1446. for us to forgive

  1447. and we say

  1448. well why doesn't God

  1449. just forgive

  1450. why does he need

  1451. to send

  1452. Jesus

  1453. his son

  1454. whom he loved

  1455. into the world

  1456. to die

  1457. why does there

  1458. need to be

  1459. a sacrifice

  1460. why does

  1461. Jesus

  1462. need to

  1463. eat

1464. if I can put it

  1465. in Passover

  1466. terms

  1467. why does

  1468. Jesus need

  1469. to eat

  1470. the bread

  1471. of suffering

  1472. drink

  1473. the cup

  1474. of God's

  1475. wrath

  1476. why does

  1477. he say

  1478. I really

  1479. I have really

  1480. eagerly

  1481. desired

  1482. to eat

  1483. this Passover

  1484. with you

  1485. before I suffer

  1486. why does he

  1487. have to suffer

  1488. at all

  1489. why can't it

  1490. just be a little

  1491. sacrament

  1492. why can't it

  1493. just be an

  1494. object lesson

  1495. in bread

  1496. and wine

  1497. why does he

  1498. have to go

  1499. through with it

  1500. because the

  1501. currency of

  1502. forgiveness

  1503. is actions

  1504. not words

  1505. and actions

  1506. speak louder

  1507. than words

  1508. Jesus is

  1509. Passover

  1510. lamb

  1511. that is how

  1512. he sees

  1513. himself

  1514. and that is

  1515. why there is

  1516. all this

  1517. cloak and

  1518. dagger stuff

  1519. at the

  1520. beginning

  1521. remember what

  1522. he says

  1523. in John's

  1524. gospel

  1525. he says

  1526. no one

  1527. takes my

  1528. life from

  1529. me

  1530. I have

  1531. the power

  1532. to lay

  1533. it down

  1534. and the

  1535. power to

  1536. take it

  1537. up again

  1538. but no

  1539. one can

  1540. take it

  1541. from me

  1542. and that's

  1543. the unique

  1544. thing about

  1545. the Lord

  1546. Jesus

  1547. isn't it

  1548. for us

  1549. in the end

  1550. death will

  1551. lay hold

  1552. of you

  1553. it will

  1554. death will

  1555. lay hold

  1556. of you

  1557. one way

  1558. or another

  1559. but Jesus

  1560. lays hold

  1561. of death

  1562. in the upper

  1563. room and

  1564. that is what

  1565. he's doing

  1566. in the upper

  1567. room

  1568. Judas

  1569. chief priest

  1570. it's not

  1571. your timetable

  1572. no one

  1573. takes my

  1574. life

  1575. I unlike

  1576. any other

  1577. human being

  1578. I have the

  1579. authority to

  1580. lay down

  1581. my life

  1582. and I have

  1583. the authority

  1584. to take it

  1585. up again

  1586. and of course

  1587. that's what he

  1588. does

  1589. isn't it

  1590. one of the

  1591. Puritans

  1592. talks about

  1593. a warrior

  1594. with a

  1595. sword

  1596. here's the

  1597. sword

  1598. here's the

  1599. sword

  1600. and the

  1601. warrior goes

  1602. into fight

  1603. with his

  1604. sword

  1605. in his

  1606. scabbard

  1607. doesn't he

  1608. he runs

  1609. with his

  1610. sword

  1611. in the

  1612. scabbard

  1613. and as he

  1614. comes near

  1615. into conflict

  1616. what does

  1617. he do

  1618. he pulls

  1619. the sword

  1620. out of

  1621. his scabbard

  1622. and after

  1623. he finishes

  1624. after he

  1625. puts the

  1626. person to

  1627. death

  1628. he puts

  1629. the sword

  1630. back

  1631. in the

  1632. scabbard

  1633. and the

  1634. illustration

  1635. is this

  1636. it's a

  1637. brilliant

  1638. illustration

  1639. the sword

  1640. and the

  1641. scabbard

  1642. are united

  1643. in the

  1644. person

  1645. of this

  1646. warrior

  1647. and Jesus

  1648. goes to

  1649. the cross

  1650. like that

  1651. what is

  1652. death

  1653. death

  1654. is a

  1655. separation

  1656. of soul

  1657. and body

  1658. Jesus

  1659. says

  1660. no one

  1661. can take

  1662. my life

  1663. from me

  1664. I have

  1665. the authority

  1666. to lay

  1667. it down

  1668. and that

  1669. is what

  1670. he does

  1671. he goes

  1672. into the

  1673. cross

  1674. and he

  1675. draws the

  1676. sword

  1677. from the

  1678. scabbard

  1679. he separates

  1680. body and

  1681. soul

  1682. for three

  1683. days he

  1684. holds his

  1685. body and

  1686. soul

  1687. separate

  1688. and on the

  1689. third day

  1690. he puts the

  1691. sword back

  1692. on the

  1693. scabbard

  1694. and he

  1695. rises from

  1696. the dead

  1697. and he

  1698. says

  1699. I have

  1700. fervently

  1701. desired

  1702. to eat

  1703. this

  1704. Passover

  1705. with you

  1706. because I

  1707. want you

  1708. to understand

  1709. what my

  1710. suffering is

  1711. about

  1712. and do you

  1713. notice this

  1714. the writer

  1715. of the

  1716. Hebrew says

  1717. it was for

  1718. the joy

  1719. that was

  1720. set before

  1721. him

  1722. he

  1723. did

  1724. the

  1725. cross

  1726. and now

  1727. he's

  1728. going to

  1729. the cross

  1730. and it

  1731. is going

  1732. to be

  1733. traumatic

  1734. for his

  1735. disciples

  1736. and even

  1737. though he's

  1738. trying to

  1739. warn them

  1740. again and

  1741. again

  1742. isn't it

  1743. even though

  1744. in the

  1745. upper room

  1746. he is

  1747. explaining to

  1748. them what

  1749. he's

  1750. doing

  1751. that he

  1752. is the

  1753. Passover

  1754. lamb

  1755. you should

  1756. be glad

  1757. about this

  1758. because when

  1759. the angel

  1760. of death

  1761. passes over

  1762. he will

  1763. see the

  1764. blood

  1765. not daubed

  1766. on a

  1767. wooden

  1768. doorpost

  1769. but on

  1770. the cross

  1771. and you

  1772. find that

  1773. when the

  1774. angel of

  1775. death

  1776. passes

  1777. over us

  1778. he sees

  1779. you

  1780. and me

  1781. and our

  1782. lives

  1783. and the

  1784. way we

  1785. have

  1786. treated

  1787. God

  1788. and treated

  1789. one another

  1790. and he

  1791. will pass

  1792. over

  1793. because of

  1794. the blood

  1795. of the

  1796. lamb

  1797. and Jesus

  1798. is preparing

  1799. for them

  1800. for that

  1801. do you

  1802. notice

  1803. what he

  1804. says

  1805. he not

  1806. only talks

  1807. about this

  1808. being fulfilled

  1809. in his

  1810. death

  1811. the next

  1812. day

  1813. but look

  1814. verse 15

  1815. he said to

  1816. them

  1817. I earnestly

  1818. desire to

  1819. eat this

  1820. Passover

  1821. with you

  1822. before I

  1823. suffer

  1824. for I

  1825. tell you

  1826. that I

  1827. will not

  1828. eat it

  1829. until it

  1830. is fulfilled

  1831. in the

  1832. kingdom

  1833. of God

  1834. and then

  1835. verse 18

  1836. for I

  1837. tell you

  1838. that from

  1839. now on

  1840. I will

  1841. not drink

  1842. of the

  1843. fruit

  1844. of the

  1845. vine

  1846. until the

  1847. kingdom

  1848. of God

  1849. comes

  1850. he's

  1851. pointing

  1852. them

  1853. beyond

  1854. what is

  1855. going to

  1856. happen

  1857. in the

  1858. next 24

  1859. hours

  1860. and he's

  1861. setting

  1862. before his

  1863. disciples

  1864. that joy

  1865. that joy

  1866. of the

  1867. coming

  1868. kingdom

  1869. and he's

  1870. really saying

  1871. listen boys

  1872. I can't

  1873. wait

  1874. I cannot

  1875. wait until

  1876. all the

  1877. ransomed

  1878. church of

  1879. God are

  1880. saved to

  1881. sin no

  1882. more

  1883. he can't

  1884. wait

  1885. and who

  1886. is he

  1887. talking to

  1888. have you

  1889. thought about

  1890. that

  1891. it's not

  1892. so now

  1893. so now

  1894. is it

  1895. what God

  1896. has

  1897. who are

  1898. these

  1899. people

  1900. they are

  1901. not heroes

  1902. are they

  1903. they are

  1904. deserters

  1905. they would

  1906. have been

  1907. shot

  1908. if they

  1909. had been

  1910. in the

  1911. army

  1912. Peter denied

  1913. him three

  1914. times

  1915. all the

  1916. other

  1917. disciples

  1918. ran away

  1919. when he

  1920. was crucified

  1921. and he

  1922. says

  1923. I

  1924. eagerly

  1925. desire

  1926. to eat

  1927. this

  1928. Passover

  1929. with you

  1930. you

  1931. treaters

  1932. you

  1933. betrayers

  1934. who

  1935. hasn't

  1936. betrayed

  1937. the

  1938. Lord

  1939. here

  1940. who

  1941. hasn't

  1942. let him

  1943. down

  1944. we are

  1945. here

  1946. tonight

  1947. at this

  1948. table

  1949. and I

  1950. have

  1951. let him

  1952. down

  1953. so often

  1954. and so

  1955. badly

  1956. but we

  1957. don't follow

  1958. King Arthur

  1959. do we

  1960. this isn't

  1961. the round

  1962. table

  1963. and this

  1964. is the

  1965. table

  1966. of the

  1967. Lord

  1968. Jesus

  1969. Christ

  1970. and we

  1971. follow

  1972. King

  1973. Jesus

  1974. and this

  1975. table

  1976. tonight

  1977. is not

  1978. for heroes

  1979. because there's

  1980. none here

  1981. it is for

  1982. sinners

  1983. it's not for

  1984. Sir Lancelot

  1985. and Galahad

  1986. it's for

  1987. Peter

  1988. and James

  1989. and John

  1990. and Sarah

  1991. and Terry

  1992. and Mark

  1993. and Betty

  1994. and Jean

  1995. Claude

  1996. that's who

  1997. it's for

  1998. and so I

  1999. invite you to

  2000. the table

  2001. this table

  2002. does not

  2003. belong to me

  2004. it doesn't

  2005. belong to

  2006. this church

  2007. it's the

  2008. Lord's table

  2009. for the

  2010. Lord's people

  2011. and if you

  2012. know that you

  2013. are a sinner

  2014. you are a sinner

  2015. who needs

  2016. saving

  2017. then come

  2018. to the

  2019. table

  2020. and eat

  2021. of the

  2022. bread

  2023. and drink

  2024. of the

  2025. wine

  2026. and Jesus

  2027. wants you

  2028. to know

  2029. tonight

  2030. how eagerly

  2031. he desires

  2032. to sit down

  2033. with you

  2034. in the

  2035. kingdom of

  2036. heaven

  2037. he cannot

  2038. wait

  2039. and have

  2040. fellowship

  2041. with you

  2042. for all

  2043. eternity

  2044. so much

  2045. so

  2046. that he

  2047. went to

  2048. the cross

  2049. for that

  2050. time

  2051. let's see
