  1. And turn back to Ruth chapter 2. Ruth chapter 2. It's on page 222. Ruth chapter 2. Emma and I have just signed up for another free trial month on Amazon Prime.

Ruth 2 chapter mention Ruth 2 chapter mention Ruth 2 chapter mention

  2. ! So it was Netflix. We did the month on that, had to cancel it, and now we're on Amazon Prime. But it means that there's now the inevitable argument

  3. about which film to actually watch if we've got time. Now can I say, Emma is much more accommodating than me.

  4. The decision is usually between Bruce Willis action films or Pride and Prejudice romance. I'm sure you can guess which of us want either of those.

  5. So if Ruth, the book of Ruth, was a film on Netflix or Amazon Prime, it probably would be one of the films that I, as a typical bloke,

  6. would ordinarily miss out on. And if Ruth chapter 2 was a film, it would probably be more like Romeo and Juliet, wouldn't it, than Rambo.

    Ruth 2 chapter mention

  7. Because it is a story of an unlikely romance. An unlikely romance between a man and a woman who should never have been allowed to be together in the first place.

  8. It's a kind of far-from-the-madding-crowd sort of story. It's an unlikely romance.

  9. And the writer that Ruth paints for us is a picture of a rural scene in the harvest fields of Boaz,

  10. where the seeds of an unlikely courtship begin to blossom, don't they? They are planted.

  11. Ruth meets the man who will redeem her situation.

  12. Now the setting in Ruth 2 is full of activity, isn't it?

  13. It's full of reaping and production and agriculture and farming.

  14. Don't we get the contrast there with what we saw Naomi and Ruth's life was like in chapter 1, if you were here last week?

  15. Where leaving the Lord to go to Moab brought bitterness, death and emptiness.

  16. But at the end of chapter 1 they return to Bethlehem in Judah, they return to the Lord's land,

  17. and now we're meant to see the contrast.

  18. They arrive at the beginning of the barley harvest, the end of chapter 1.

  19. And the fields are white, ready to be harvested, full of crops.

  20. We go from the emptiness of chapter 1 to fullness, from famine to fields of plenty, from sadness to satisfaction.

  21. And the key reason that the writer gives us for that, I think is in verse 11 and 12 if you look there.

  22. Boaz answered Ruth,

  23. So it's important to see the truth.

  24. See, isn't it, that the change of scene, from chapter 1 to chapter 2, this change of life for Ruth has come through a changed perspective on God.

  25. To leave one life behind and come to God's people and his place.

  26. That's what repentance looks like, isn't it?

  27. Instead of running from God, Ruth has turned around and starts to come towards God, to take refuge under his wings in his land.

  28. It's a lovely image that, isn't it?

  29. The image of little chicks, little birds, sheltering from the hot deadly sun in the cooling shadow of a mother's wings.

  30. Ruth has found an oasis in the famine desert as she comes back to God, as she shelters under his wings.

  31. And under the wings of God, God has purposed a man to bring his blessings and care into her life.

  32. Under the wings of God, Ruth meets the Redeemer of God.

  33. Now Ruth, too, is shot through, isn't it, with the impressive figure of this man, Boaz.

  34. Who is Christ-like in his provision for her and grace and love for Ruth.

  35. Boaz is the one who brings blessings to bear in her life.

  36. He says,

  37. It is Boaz, isn't it, who pronounces and provides God's blessings on her.

  38. He is Christ-like.

  39. But as we dive into this, I want us to see how unlikely and impossible the meeting of Ruth and Boaz really is.

  40. Every good love story has impossible odds, doesn't it?

  41. Romeo and Juliet.

  42. Juliet, they come from different warring families.

  43. Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet both hate each other's guts at the beginning.

  44. Beauty and the Beast.

  45. Well, one of them's a beauty and one of them's a beast, isn't it?

  46. Every great love story has impossible odds.

  47. They always have a hurdle to climb over.

  48. Something that would normally keep them apart.

  49. So, for Ruth, this isn't a simple story of boy meets girl and the rest of history.

  50. Because, first of all, there is the locked door that keeps Ruth out.

  51. The locked door that keeps Ruth out.

  52. So, amidst the excitement of watching Ruth and Boaz meet in this book,

  53. is the underlying fact of the girl's past, isn't it?

  54. Ruth's skeletons hidden in the closet.

  55. There is something about her identity, about her very nature,

  56. that means that this union is an illicit relationship.

  57. It could be something that would pass us by on, on first reading, actually.

  58. But the writer leaves us in no doubt that something is amiss with Ruth.

  59. So, how is she described?

  60. Look at verse 2.

  61. Ruth, the Moabite, said to Naomi,

  62. let me go to the field and glean.

  63. Verse 6.

  64. The servant who is in charge of the Reepers answered,

  65. she is the young Moabite woman.

  66. Verse 21.

  67. Ruth, the Moabite, said.

  68. As a Moabite woman,

  69. Ruth has got baggage in this relationship.

  70. Her identity as a Moabite

  71. closes the door on her

  72. to receive any blessings from God.

  73. She should be kept out

  74. from the assembly.

  75. Now, if you'd like to,

  76. you don't have to,

  77. but if you'd like to,

  78. turn back with me to

  79. Deuteronomy chapter 23.

    Deuteronomy 23 chapter mention

  80. Deuteronomy chapter 23.

    Deuteronomy 23 chapter mention

  81. It's on page...

  82. when I get there.

  83. 165.

  84. Now, in this part of the Bible,

  85. Moses preaches to God's people

  86. the laws of the Lord.

  87. And God's land is to be lived in properly.

  88. It is to be a holy land

  89. where those who reject God

  90. cannot receive his blessings.

  91. Now, historically,

  92. the people of Moab

  93. have been at war with Israel.

  94. So the Lord gives a law about them

  95. specifically.

  96. Deuteronomy chapter 23,

    Deuteronomy 23:3–4

  97. verse 3 to 4.

  98. No Ammonite or Moabite

  99. may enter the assembly of the Lord,

  100. even to the tenth generation.

  101. None of them may enter

  102. the assembly of the Lord

  103. forever.

  104. Because they did not meet you

  105. with bread

  106. and with water on the way

  107. when you came out of Egypt.

  108. And because they hired against you

  109. Balaam, the son of Beor

  110. from Pethor of Mesopotamia,

  111. to curse you.

  112. The Moabites are a marked people.

  113. Marked for exclusion,

  114. not inclusion,

  115. into God's people.

  116. If you're born a Moabite,

  117. you're born into a marked people.

  118. So you can take the girl

  119. out of Moab, can't you?

  120. You can take her there,

  121. but you cannot take Moab

  122. out of the girl.

  123. It was down to her very nature

  124. that she wasn't permitted

  125. to be in the covenant.

  126. She was naturally an outsider.

  127. Moab was in her blood.

  128. It was what made her tick.

  129. She was a Moabite

  130. at the core of who she was.

  131. She was part of a people

  132. who had warred against the Lord.

  133. So God's law kept her

  134. from coming to him

  135. and meeting him.

  136. And so we see, don't we,

  137. the barrier for Ruth

  138. ever receiving blessing

  139. from the Lord.

  140. God's covenant promises

  141. were not for her.

  142. She was an outsider.

  143. The Moabite woman

  144. could not just stroll in

  145. to God's presence

  146. and ask for blessing.

  147. It would be an impossible thing.

  148. None of them

  149. may enter my assembly

  150. forever.

  151. What a sentence that is.

  152. I don't know if I could

  153. stomach those words.

  154. You are never allowed in,

  155. God says.

  156. You are never allowed in

  157. to my blessings.

  158. God's perfect,

  159. holy, pure law

  160. was the locked door

  161. that kept Ruth

  162. the Moabite out.

  163. Now if this is sounding

  164. a bit harsh,

  165. we know, don't we,

  166. that God is a God of love.

  167. God is a God of love.

  168. We all know that.

  169. But God doesn't love

  170. everything in his land.

  171. He is a God of love,

  172. but he doesn't love everything.

  173. He doesn't love rape.

  174. He doesn't love murder.

  175. He doesn't love sex abuse.

  176. He is a God of love,

  177. but he doesn't love

  178. those things,

  179. and we're glad of that,

  180. aren't we?

  181. He doesn't love liars.

  182. He doesn't love cheaters.

  183. He doesn't love impure thoughts.

  184. He doesn't love evil speech.

  185. Now as we go through that list,

  186. it gets quite close to home,

  187. doesn't it?

  188. As we realise that actually

  189. we've all got

  190. a bit of Moab in us.

  191. Let me read to you

  192. some verses from Paul's letter

  193. to the Ephesians.

  194. Ephesians chapter 2.

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  195. We all once lived

  196. in the passions of our flesh,

  197. carrying out the desires

  198. of the body and the mind,

  199. and were by nature

  200. children of wrath,

  201. like the rest of mankind.

  202. Paul says it was in our nature.

  203. We had Moab

  204. in the passions of our flesh,

  205. Moab in the selfish desires

  206. of the body,

  207. and Moab in the mind.

  208. Like Ruth,

  209. we come to God

  210. as total outsiders,

  211. naturally excluded

  212. from his presence

  213. and his blessings.

  214. Now perhaps you're here tonight

  215. and you wouldn't call yourself

  216. a Christian.

  217. You're very, very welcome.

  218. But I wonder if you feel

  219. the reality of that

  220. tonight.

  221. It just feels like

  222. there is a total canyon

  223. between you and God.

  224. something huge

  225. is in the way,

  226. separating you.

  227. It feels like a locked door.

  228. Even to the tenth generation,

  229. God says in Deuteronomy,

  230. the Moabites

  231. are excluded.

  232. Now I think that helps us,

  233. doesn't it,

  234. with the distinction

  235. between feeling guilty

  236. and being guilty.

  237. Feeling guilty

  238. and being guilty.

  239. You didn't have to feel guilty

  240. to be guilty.

  241. You don't have to be

  242. conscious of sin,

  243. but it's in our blood.

  244. By nature,

  245. we are all Moabites.

  246. Paul says,

  247. we were children of wrath,

  248. excluded from God's

  249. covenant blessings,

  250. children of Moab.

  251. And God's law

  252. is uncompromising

  253. and exclusive.

  254. He is a God of love,

  255. but he doesn't love everything.

  256. Psalm 24,

  257. who shall ascend

  258. the hill of the Lord?

  259. Who shall stand

  260. in his place?

  261. His holy place.

  262. Leviticus 18,

  263. it's one of my favourite passages,

  264. speaks about the land

  265. vomiting out the people

  266. if they make it

  267. unclean with sin.

  268. By nature,

  269. I am a Moabite.

  270. And by nature,

  271. God cannot stomach that.

  272. His land

  273. would vomit me out.

  274. He wants sin out.

  275. He wants rid of it

  276. to vomit it out.

  277. You can take me out of Moab.

  278. You can put me

  279. in a Christian culture.

  280. But actually,

  281. it's much, much harder,

  282. isn't it,

  283. to take the Moab

  284. out of me.

  285. And so the door

  286. is firmly locked

  287. for Ruth

  288. to reach God's

  289. assembly.

  290. God's perfect law

  291. marks her

  292. as a Moabite.

  293. And perhaps we

  294. need to feel that

  295. a bit more,

  296. don't we,

  297. these days?

  298. To walk into

  299. God's assembly

  300. and simply ask

  301. for his blessings,

  302. it should be,

  303. should be,

  304. impossible.

  305. Prayer meetings,

  306. a prayer meeting

  307. on Wednesday evening,

  308. it should be impossible,

  309. shouldn't it?

  310. Knowing God,

  311. receiving his blessings,

  312. being in his assembly,

  313. should be impossible.

  314. By nature,

  315. we were all children

  316. of wrath,

  317. outsiders.

  318. He should vomit us out.

  319. So there was the door

  320. that kept her out.

  321. There was the door

  322. that kept her out.

  323. But then,

  324. there is the man

  325. who gets her in.

  326. The man who gets

  327. her in.

  328. Just have a look

  329. with me at

  330. verse 4 to 6.

  331. Verse 4 to 6.

  332. Behold,

  333. Boaz came

  334. from Bethlehem

  335. and he said

  336. to the reapers,

  337. The Lord be with you.

  338. And they answered,

  339. The Lord bless you.

  340. Then Boaz said

  341. to his young man

  342. who was in charge

  343. of the reapers,

  344. Whose young woman

  345. is this?

  346. And the servant

  347. who was in charge

  348. of the reapers

  349. answered,

  350. She is the young

  351. Moabite woman

  352. who came back

  353. with Naomi

  354. from the country

  355. of Moab.

  356. Behold,

  357. it's Boaz.

  358. It's Boaz.

  359. And Boaz

  360. is a definitively

  361. beautiful character,

  362. isn't he?

  363. We're told in verse 2

  364. that he is a worthy man.

  365. And the fields

  366. belong to him,

  367. don't they?

  368. And as he appears

  369. in the field,

  370. he comes pronouncing

  371. the Lord's blessing

  372. on his workers,

  373. on those in his land.

  374. The Lord bless you.

  375. And they reply,

  376. The Lord bless you.

  377. Boaz is surrounded

  378. by blessing

  379. and bounty

  380. and activity,

  381. by production,

  382. by life.

  383. He is the head

  384. and the workers

  385. all surround him

  386. in the fields.

  387. It's the harvest

  388. and Boaz

  389. is at the kernel,

  390. isn't he?

  391. He is at the centre

  392. in the midst

  393. of his workforce,

  394. talking to them,

  395. near to them,

  396. proclaiming God's blessings

  397. upon them

  398. as they work.

  399. He is the mediator

  400. and focus

  401. of the blessings

  402. that God has given

  403. the people here,

  404. Boaz.

  405. And Ruth

  406. just so happens

  407. not only to be

  408. in the right field

  409. at the right time,

  410. but in the right part

  411. of the field

  412. just at the time

  413. when Boaz appears.

  414. It's a providential

  415. moment in her life

  416. because actually

  417. seeking refuge

  418. under the wings

  419. of the Lord

  420. brings her

  421. directly to the fields

  422. of Boaz.

  423. Even though

  424. we're reminded

  425. she's an outsider,

  426. the Lord brings her

  427. providentially

  428. into contact

  429. with him.

  430. With him.

  431. The core of all life

  432. for the people.

  433. The Lord brings her

  434. to this Christ-like

  435. figure.

  436. So there's a great

  437. paradox there,

  438. isn't there,

  439. in the work of God.

  440. Now think about

  441. your front door

  442. for a second.

  443. Your front door

  444. is not just there

  445. for one reason,

  446. is it?

  447. It's there for two reasons.

  448. One reason

  449. is to keep

  450. unwanted people out,

  451. isn't it?

  452. Stay out.

  453. It is to keep

  454. outsiders away

  455. from your family,

  456. keeps your house

  457. safe from harm.

  458. But actually

  459. that same door

  460. is also used

  461. to let people in.

  462. Isn't it?

  463. It's a paradox.

  464. The same door

  465. keeps people out

  466. but it lets people in

  467. at the same time.

  468. Now just going back

  469. to Deuteronomy again.

  470. Do you remember

  471. chapter 23?

  472. The uncompromising

  473. force of God's law.

  474. Keeping Moabites

  475. out.

  476. But then only

  477. in the next chapter,

  478. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 24 chapter mention

  479. chapter 24,

  480. listen to these words

  481. in verse 19.

  482. When you reap

  483. your harvest

  484. in your field

  485. and forget

  486. a sheaf

  487. in the field,

  488. you shall not

  489. go back

  490. to get it.

  491. It shall be

  492. for the sojourner,

  493. the fatherless

  494. and the widow,

  495. that the Lord

  496. your God

  497. may bless you

  498. in all the work

  499. of your hands.

  500. When you reap

  501. your olive trees,

  502. you shall not

  503. go over them again.

  504. It shall be

  505. for the sojourner,

  506. the fatherless

  507. and the widow.

  508. When you gather

  509. the grapes

  510. of your vineyard,

  511. you shall not

  512. strip it afterwards.

  513. It shall be

  514. for the sojourner,

  515. the fatherless

  516. and the widow.

  517. You shall remember

  518. that you

  519. were a slave

  520. in the land

  521. of Egypt.

  522. Therefore,

  523. I command you

  524. to do this.

  525. Moabites

  526. stay out.

  527. Chapter 23

  528. gives reasons,

  529. doesn't it,

  530. why Ruth

  531. should be excluded.

  532. But then only

  533. on the next page,

  534. chapter 24,

  535. gives reasons

  536. why she should

  537. be included.

  538. It's a funny thing.

  539. Ruth qualifies

  540. on all three counts,

  541. doesn't she?

  542. She is a sojourner,

  543. foreigner from Moab.

  544. She is fatherless

  545. and she is a widow

  546. at harvest time

  547. as well.

  548. It shows us,

  549. doesn't it,

  550. that contained

  551. within the very law

  552. which prevented

  553. her access

  554. is a provision

  555. for access.

  556. We see that

  557. the paradox

  558. of God's law,

  559. the open,

  560. closed door.

  561. God says

  562. to sinners,

  563. stop.

  564. There is no question

  565. about that.

  566. And yet,

  567. somehow in his grace,

  568. the same law of God

  569. opens a way

  570. for sinners

  571. to join in.

  572. Stop,

  573. come in.

  574. A door keeps people out,

  575. stop,

  576. but it also lets people in.

  577. And without that same door,

  578. nobody can enter.

  579. And this opened door

  580. is opened

  581. by God's

  582. Christ-like

  583. figure,

  584. Boaz.

  585. The door was closed,

  586. but the man

  587. gets her in.

  588. The man

  589. is the means

  590. whereby Ruth

  591. can come into

  592. the full blessings

  593. of God's covenant

  594. assembly.

  595. He is the one

  596. through whom

  597. God gives grace

  598. to her,

  599. through whom

  600. he welcomes

  601. outsiders.

  602. He notices her,

  603. doesn't he?

  604. Whose young woman

  605. is this?

  606. He seeks her out.

  607. He pursues her

  608. and shows her

  609. where to glean

  610. her barley.

  611. Have a look at

  612. verse 8 and 9 again.

  613. Back in Ruth.

  614. Boaz said to Ruth,

  615. now listen,

  616. my daughter,

  617. don't go to glean

  618. in another field

  619. or leave this one.

  620. Keep close to my

  621. young women.

  622. Let your eyes

  623. be on the field

  624. that they are reaping

  625. and go after them.

  626. Have I not charged

  627. the young men

  628. not to touch you?

  629. When you are thirsty,

  630. go to the vessels

  631. and drink

  632. what the young men

  633. have drawn.

  634. He leads her

  635. to green pastures

  636. and to still waters.

  637. He provides safety.

  638. He fends off

  639. rebuke from her,

  640. doesn't he?

  641. In verse 15,

  642. when she rose to glean,

  643. Boaz instructed

  644. his young men,

  645. saying,

  646. let her glean,

  647. even among the sheaves.

  648. Don't rebuke her.

  649. Verse 16 as well.

  650. Also,

  651. pull out some

  652. from the bundles

  653. for her

  654. and leave it

  655. for her to glean.

  656. Don't rebuke her.

  657. Boaz seeks her out,

  658. provides,

  659. and includes,

  660. and welcomes,

  661. and protects.

  662. There's a lovely scene,

  663. isn't there?

  664. A mealtime scene

  665. in verse 14.

  666. At mealtime,

  667. Boaz said to her,

  668. come here

  669. and eat some bread

  670. and dip your morsel

  671. in the wine.

  672. So she sat beside

  673. the reapers

  674. and he passed to her

  675. roasted grain.

  676. She ate until

  677. she was satisfied

  678. and she had

  679. some left over.

  680. From emptiness

  681. to fullness.

  682. From sadness

  683. to satisfaction.

  684. From exclusion

  685. to inclusion

  686. through the man

  687. Boaz.

  688. The Lord Jesus

  689. says,

  690. doesn't he,

  691. in the Gospels,

  692. in John's Gospels,

  693. I am the door.

  694. I am the door.

  695. If anyone

  696. enters by me,

  697. he will be saved

  698. and will go in

  699. and out

  700. and find pasture.

  701. I am the bread

  702. of life.

  703. Whoever comes

  704. to me

  705. will not hunger.

  706. Whoever believes

  707. in me

  708. shall never thirst.

  709. This Christ-like

  710. man

  711. says to

  712. outsiders,

  713. no, no,

  714. don't rebuke him.

  715. Don't rebuke her.

  716. Let him

  717. glean.

  718. Let her

  719. glean

  720. in God's

  721. field.

  722. Don't reproach

  723. her.

  724. Let her

  725. glean here.

  726. God's

  727. holy law

  728. says,

  729. stop.

  730. But God's

  731. holy Christ

  732. says,

  733. come here.

  734. Dip your

  735. morsel in

  736. the wine.

  737. He passes

  738. the grain

  739. to outsiders

  740. out of his

  741. abundance,

  742. satisfaction

  743. to sinners.

  744. This man

  745. is the

  746. means

  747. where

  748. Moabites,

  749. outsiders,

  750. can come in.

  751. He is

  752. God's

  753. redeemer.

  754. I was in

  755. Waitrose

  756. the other

  757. day,

  758. and there

  759. was a

  760. magazine on

  761. the shelf

  762. there,

  763. and it

  764. had Dawn

  765. French on

  766. the front,

  767. and it

  768. had her

  769. tips on

  770. minimalistic

  771. living.

  772. The headline

  773. said at the

  774. top,

  775. less is

  776. more,

  777. declutter,

  778. get

  779. organised,

  780. live

  781. lighter.

  782. Less is

  783. more,

  784. declutter,

  785. get organised,

  786. live lighter.

  787. And that

  788. in a sense

  789. is exactly

  790. what Naomi

  791. and Ruth

  792. have done

  793. since chapter

  794. one.

  795. So they

  796. started off

  797. in the

  798. land of

  799. Moab,

  800. which is

  801. representative

  802. of the

  803. world outside

  804. of Judah,

  805. outside of

  806. Israel.

  807. And they

  808. moved to

  809. a little

  810. piece of

  811. land,

  812. the Lord's

  813. land.

  814. They

  815. downsized,

  816. don't they?

  817. And then

  818. they come

  819. to a

  820. little town,

  821. little town

  822. of Bethlehem.

  823. And now

  824. Ruth is

  825. restricted to

  826. just one

  827. little field.

  828. Out of

  829. all the

  830. places she

  831. could be,

  832. she's in

  833. one little

  834. field.

  835. Boaz

  836. says to

  837. her,

  838. don't

  839. glean in

  840. any other

  841. field.

  842. So she's

  843. downsized in

  844. life.

  845. She's

  846. become very

  847. focused.

  848. She's

  849. decluttered

  850. and become

  851. very

  852. minimalistic.

  853. Just this

  854. one field.

  855. Boaz's

  856. field.

  857. But where

  858. Boaz is

  859. concerned,

  860. less is

  861. more.

  862. Less is

  863. more.

  864. It is

  865. specifically

  866. where

  867. Boaz's

  868. field is.

  869. Where the

  870. fruit is,

  871. isn't it?

  872. They're in

  873. one tiny

  874. field,

  875. but in

  876. their travels

  877. the quality

  878. of their

  879. lives has

  880. been inversely

  881. proportional to

  882. what they

  883. appear.

  884. She becomes

  885. focused on

  886. Boaz.

  887. Life has

  888. become more

  889. focused in

  890. this one

  891. place.

  892. But the

  893. more tight

  894. her focus

  895. is on

  896. him,

  897. the more

  898. fruitful

  899. and vibrant

  900. and satisfying

  901. and full

  902. of life

  903. she has

  904. become.

  905. She's

  906. now sitting

  907. with him

  908. eating grain

  909. with it

  910. brimming over

  911. into leftovers.

  912. And so

  913. the way

  914. Ruth knows

  915. the blessings

  916. of God

  917. to know

  918. him is

  919. to glean

  920. specifically

  921. in the

  922. field of

  923. Boaz.

  924. she

  925. gleans

  926. and she

  927. gleans

  928. and she

  929. gleans

  930. and she

  931. gleans

  932. only there.

  933. Look at

  934. verse 7

  935. again.

  936. She said

  937. please let

  938. me glean

  939. and gather

  940. among the

  941. sheaves

  942. after the

  943. reapers.

  944. So she

  945. came,

  946. she continued

  947. from early

  948. morning until

  949. now except

  950. for a short

  951. rest.

  952. Sometimes

  953. I chat to

  954. folk in

  955. Ealing who

  956. call themselves

  957. spiritual,

  958. spiritual people.

  959. But often

  960. these folk

  961. can be quite

  962. cluttered

  963. in their

  964. thinking.

  965. Well we're all

  966. cluttered in

  967. our thinking

  968. aren't we

  969. really?

  970. I met a

  971. lovely guy

  972. the other

  973. day.

  974. He called

  975. himself

  976. spiritual.

  977. But in

  978. many ways

  979. he was

  980. quite confused

  981. about God

  982. and what he

  983. really believed.

  984. He was one

  985. of the kinds

  986. of people who

  987. didn't want

  988. to commit

  989. to anything.

  990. To have a

  991. little bit

  992. of every

  993. religion.

  994. He liked

  995. Jesus.

  996. But he

  997. said all

  998. these gods

  999. are all

  1000. the same

  1001. aren't they?

  1002. I'm just

  1003. a spiritual

  1004. person.

  1005. I don't

  1006. want to

  1007. restrict

  1008. myself to

  1009. one way

  1010. of thinking.

  1011. That's just

  1012. bigoted and

  1013. narrow.

  1014. But Ruth has

  1015. had to learn

  1016. hasn't she

  1017. that with

  1018. God's

  1019. Christ

  1020. what seems

  1021. less

  1022. is more.

  1023. To focus

  1024. on one

  1025. God

  1026. and one

  1027. person in

  1028. Jesus

  1029. Christ

  1030. to glean

  1031. from him

  1032. alone

  1033. is true

  1034. spirituality.

  1035. It is

  1036. true blessing

  1037. and satisfaction.

  1038. The more

  1039. pointed and

  1040. focused we

  1041. are in the

  1042. field of

  1043. Jesus

  1044. on him

  1045. alone

  1046. the wider

  1047. and greater

  1048. and more

  1049. abundant

  1050. the fruit

  1051. becomes.

  1052. Less is

  1053. more

  1054. with him.

  1055. Sometimes we

  1056. need to listen

  1057. to Dawn

  1058. French don't

  1059. we?

  1060. Less is

  1061. more.

  1062. Declutter.

  1063. Get organized.

  1064. Live lighter.

  1065. Get specific

  1066. with Jesus.

  1067. Get specific

  1068. with Jesus.

  1069. Glean from

  1070. him and

  1071. him alone.

  1072. Get rid of

  1073. the spiritual

  1074. clutter.

  1075. Don't do

  1076. pick and mix

  1077. religion.

  1078. There's a

  1079. great artist

  1080. called

  1081. Millet.

  1082. He painted

  1083. a picture

  1084. it's called

  1085. the Gleaners.

  1086. It shows

  1087. two women

  1088. in the

  1089. foreground

  1090. bending over

  1091. to pick

  1092. tiny pieces

  1093. of grain

  1094. off the

  1095. soil.

  1096. In the

  1097. background

  1098. are the

  1099. farmers

  1100. with sacks

  1101. of grain

  1102. and these

  1103. two women

  1104. pick up

  1105. the straps.

  1106. It looks

  1107. like hard

  1108. work and

  1109. you're aware

  1110. of the

  1111. abundance

  1112. of the

  1113. farmers

  1114. have.

  1115. But there's

  1116. something

  1117. honorable

  1118. about these

  1119. women in

  1120. this painting.

  1121. They're in

  1122. the foreground.

  1123. They're

  1124. gleaning in

  1125. the right

  1126. place.

  1127. They pick

  1128. with their

  1129. right hands

  1130. and in

  1131. their left

  1132. hands are

  1133. bunches of

  1134. corn.

  1135. There's a

  1136. humility about

  1137. them.

  1138. Ruth sits

  1139. with Boaz

  1140. and his

  1141. people.

  1142. She eats

  1143. until she's

  1144. satisfied.

  1145. She sits

  1146. and receives

  1147. from him.

  1148. And note

  1149. how the

  1150. provision

  1151. just snowballs

  1152. from there

  1153. doesn't it?

  1154. So after this

  1155. evening meal

  1156. Boaz changes

  1157. the policy

  1158. on gleaning.

  1159. Have a look

  1160. at verse

  1161. 15.

  1162. When she

  1163. rose to

  1164. gleam

  1165. Boaz

  1166. instructed

  1167. his young

  1168. men saying

  1169. let her

  1170. glean even

  1171. among the

  1172. sheaves.

  1173. Don't

  1174. reproach

  1175. her.

  1176. And also

  1177. pull out

  1178. some from

  1179. the bundles

  1180. for her.

  1181. Leave it

  1182. to her

  1183. for her to

  1184. glean and

  1185. don't rebuke

  1186. her.

  1187. Boaz

  1188. slightly

  1189. cheats

  1190. the system

  1191. there

  1192. doesn't

  1193. he?

  1194. Boaz

  1195. gives

  1196. her a

  1197. hand.

  1198. He gives

  1199. her a

  1200. head start

  1201. in the

  1202. gleaning.

  1203. As she

  1204. comes to

  1205. him she

  1206. gets specific

  1207. about receiving

  1208. from him

  1209. alone.

  1210. She declutters

  1211. the more

  1212. she focuses

  1213. on him

  1214. actually the

  1215. more and

  1216. more and

  1217. more she

  1218. gets back.

  1219. Similar to

  1220. what Jesus

  1221. says isn't

  1222. it in Mark

    Mark 4 chapter mention

  1223. chapter 4

  1224. Jesus said

  1225. to them

  1226. pay attention

  1227. to what

  1228. you hear

  1229. and with

  1230. the measure

  1231. you use it

  1232. it will be

  1233. measured to

  1234. you.

  1235. Still more

  1236. will be added

  1237. to you for

  1238. to the one

  1239. who has

  1240. more will

  1241. be given.

  1242. The more

  1243. attention you

  1244. pay with

  1245. him

  1246. with the

  1247. Lord Jesus

  1248. Christ

  1249. the more

  1250. you glean

  1251. from him

  1252. the more

  1253. that that

  1254. will be

  1255. measured

  1256. back to

  1257. you.

  1258. And the

  1259. more and

  1260. more and

  1261. more he

  1262. gives.

  1263. And he

  1264. gives us

  1265. a head

  1266. start.

  1267. He gives

  1268. us more

  1269. and more

  1270. from his

  1271. abundance.

  1272. So get

  1273. specific with

  1274. Jesus

  1275. and him

  1276. alone.

  1277. This

  1278. man

  1279. the Lord

  1280. of the

  1281. harvest

  1282. his

  1283. workers

  1284. are

  1285. happy.

  1286. They

  1287. receive

  1288. the

  1289. Lord's

  1290. blessing.

  1291. It's

  1292. the harvest

  1293. and Boaz

  1294. is in

  1295. the middle

  1296. in the

  1297. midst of

  1298. his

  1299. workforce

  1300. talking to

  1301. them

  1302. near to

  1303. them

  1304. proclaiming

  1305. God's

  1306. blessing

  1307. upon them

  1308. as they

  1309. work.

  1310. And

  1311. outsiders

  1312. who

  1313. glean in

  1314. his

  1315. field

  1316. are

  1317. satisfied.

  1318. He is

  1319. the man

  1320. who gets

  1321. her in.

  1322. As we

  1323. close,

  1324. there is

  1325. a reminder

  1326. isn't

  1327. there

  1328. that at

  1329. the end

  1330. of chapter

  1331. two that

  1332. you can

  1333. take the

  1334. girl out

  1335. of Moab

  1336. but less

  1337. easily

  1338. Moab

  1339. out of

  1340. the girl.

  1341. We leave

  1342. the chapter

  1343. with a

  1344. conversation

  1345. between

  1346. Naomi and

  1347. Ruth who

  1348. comes back

  1349. to her

  1350. mother-in-law

  1351. with the

  1352. abundance of

  1353. the gleanings

  1354. from Boaz's

  1355. field plus

  1356. the left

  1357. Davis from

  1358. the meal

  1359. that evening.

  1360. Now you

  1361. can imagine

  1362. them in

  1363. this conversation

  1364. giggling like

  1365. little girls

  1366. can't you?

  1367. The questions

  1368. come out

  1369. in verse

  1370. 19.

  1371. Imagine

  1372. Ruth with

  1373. all of

  1374. this barley

  1375. verse 19

  1376. Where did

  1377. you glean

  1378. today?

  1379. Naomi says

  1380. Where have

  1381. you worked?

  1382. Blessed be

  1383. the man who

  1384. took notice

  1385. of you.

  1386. Ruth replies

  1387. the man's

  1388. name was

  1389. Boaz.

  1390. Well,

  1391. she says,

  1392. he may be

  1393. blessed by

  1394. the Lord

  1395. whose kindness

  1396. has not

  1397. forsaken

  1398. the living

  1399. or the

  1400. dead.

  1401. There's more

  1402. she says.

  1403. The man,

  1404. the man is

  1405. a close

  1406. relative of

  1407. ours.

  1408. One of

  1409. our

  1410. redeemers.

  1411. It is a

  1412. moment,

  1413. isn't it,

  1414. of seeing

  1415. God's grace

  1416. to them

  1417. through this

  1418. man.

  1419. Naomi is

  1420. seeing Ruth

  1421. beginning those

  1422. early stages

  1423. of coming

  1424. into the

  1425. covenant

  1426. community.

  1427. And she's

  1428. met the

  1429. man who

  1430. will be

  1431. able to

  1432. redeem her

  1433. as her

  1434. relative,

  1435. to marry

  1436. her into

  1437. the people.

  1438. She's

  1439. finally be

  1440. able to

  1441. have rest

  1442. and security.

  1443. Now you

  1444. can imagine

  1445. them picturing

  1446. the wedding

  1447. already,

  1448. can't you?

  1449. She's almost

  1450. going to buy

  1451. the hat,

  1452. getting ahead

  1453. of themselves.

  1454. The hysterics

  1455. continue,

  1456. verse 21.

  1457. Besides,

  1458. he said to

  1459. me,

  1460. you shall

  1461. keep close

  1462. to my

  1463. young men

  1464. until they

  1465. finish the

  1466. harvest.

  1467. you shall

  1468. keep close

  1469. to my

  1470. young men,

  1471. he said.

  1472. No,

  1473. he didn't,

  1474. did he?

  1475. What did

  1476. Boaz actually

  1477. say to her?

  1478. Look back

  1479. at verse

  1480. 8.

  1481. Boaz said

  1482. to Ruth,

  1483. now listen,

  1484. my daughter,

  1485. do not go

  1486. to gleam

  1487. in another

  1488. field or

  1489. leave this

  1490. one,

  1491. but keep

  1492. close to

  1493. my young

  1494. women.

  1495. keep

  1496. close to

  1497. my young

  1498. women.

  1499. Naomi

  1500. hears the

  1501. problem

  1502. there,

  1503. doesn't

  1504. she?

  1505. She

  1506. corrects

  1507. Ruth in

  1508. verse 22.

  1509. Naomi

  1510. said to

  1511. Ruth,

  1512. her daughter-in-law,

  1513. it is good

  1514. my daughter

  1515. that you

  1516. go out

  1517. with his

  1518. young

  1519. women,

  1520. lest in

  1521. another

  1522. field you

  1523. be

  1524. assaulted.

  1525. See,

  1526. whilst it's

  1527. exciting

  1528. to see

  1529. Ruth coming

  1530. close to

  1531. this redeeming

  1532. man,

  1533. there are

  1534. signs of

  1535. Moab

  1536. reappearing,

  1537. aren't there?

  1538. Signs of

  1539. not quite

  1540. getting that

  1541. she needs

  1542. Boaz and

  1543. Boaz alone.

  1544. Stay only

  1545. in my field,

  1546. he says,

  1547. stay near

  1548. the women.

  1549. From quite

  1550. early on,

  1551. we get

  1552. sense,

  1553. don't we,

  1554. I think,

  1555. that Boaz

  1556. wants to

  1557. provide for

  1558. her,

  1559. wants her

  1560. for himself,

  1561. he wants

  1562. to be the

  1563. sole provider,

  1564. the sole

  1565. redeemer.

  1566. And

  1567. Naomi has

  1568. to put

  1569. her back

  1570. on the

  1571. straight and

  1572. narrow,

  1573. doesn't she?

  1574. Verse 23,

  1575. Ruth listens

  1576. to Naomi

  1577. and keeps

  1578. close to

  1579. the young

  1580. women of

  1581. Boaz,

  1582. disaster

  1583. averted.

  1584. She remains

  1585. available for

  1586. Boaz to

  1587. redeem her in

  1588. marriage.

  1589. marriage.

  1590. So isn't

  1591. it a reminder

  1592. of how we

  1593. were part

  1594. of a people

  1595. who'd warred

  1596. against the

  1597. Lord and

  1598. sometimes that

  1599. cluttered,

  1600. living in the

  1601. passions of

  1602. our flesh

  1603. kind of life

  1604. we'd come

  1605. from can

  1606. sometimes pull

  1607. us back.

  1608. We need

  1609. more Naomi's,

  1610. don't we?

  1611. More Naomi's

  1612. who pull us

  1613. up and say,

  1614. no, no,

  1615. what are you

  1616. doing?

  1617. It's good

  1618. that you

  1619. stay near

  1620. Jesus and

  1621. make yourself

  1622. available for

  1623. him and

  1624. him alone.

  1625. We've all

  1626. got that bit

  1627. of Moab

  1628. in us that

  1629. craves

  1630. independence

  1631. from him.

  1632. But the

  1633. door that

  1634. has kept us

  1635. out of God's

  1636. blessings is

  1637. the door,

  1638. it's the only

  1639. door that

  1640. lets us in

  1641. through him

  1642. and only

  1643. him.

  1644. So get

  1645. specific about

  1646. Jesus.

  1647. It is a

  1648. story, isn't

  1649. it, of an

  1650. unlikely romance

  1651. between a

  1652. man and a

  1653. woman because

  1654. Ruth and

  1655. Boaz should

  1656. never have

  1657. been allowed

  1658. to be

  1659. together.

  1660. And we

  1661. should never

  1662. have been

  1663. allowed to

  1664. be with

  1665. Jesus.

  1666. But God

  1667. has sent

  1668. him to

  1669. us that

  1670. we might

  1671. be like

  1672. Ruth here

  1673. like

  1674. little

  1675. chicks

  1676. sheltering

  1677. from the

  1678. hot daily

  1679. sun

  1680. in the

  1681. cool shadow

  1682. of a

  1683. mother's

  1684. wings.

  1685. Ruth has

  1686. found the

  1687. oasis in

  1688. the desert

  1689. of coming

  1690. back to

  1691. God.

  1692. Under the

  1693. wings of

  1694. God,

  1695. Ruth meets

  1696. the

  1697. Redeemer

  1698. of God.

  1699. Let's

  1700. play in a

  1701. short

  1702. prayer.
