  1. Well, as you heard the psalm read, and I deliberately read it quite slowly, I wonder what ideas came into your minds.

  2. ! If you know Handel's Messiah, you will have recognised verses 7-10.

  3. Lift up your heads, O ye gates, and be lifted up, ye everlasting doors, for the King of Glory may come in.

  4. You may even have found yourself singing along in your minds, something I usually do if texts from the Messiah turn up.

  5. And because it's from Handel's Messiah, you will know that many Christians have connected these last verses with Jesus.

  6. They have something to do with Jesus, although exactly what may not be immediately clear to you.

  7. What is said about him? It is said that he is the King of Glory.

  8. He is the Lord of Hosts. He is a good fighter, he wins battles.

  9. And the gates and the doors are addressed again, get up, lift yourselves up, and be lifted up, and open to allow him to enter.

  10. He comes in, he enters the city as the head of a mighty conquering army, the Lord of Hosts.

  11. So this is clearly a psalm which is celebrating the victory of God, and God's King, and the accomplishment of God's purposes.

  12. And this victory provokes wild celebration at the gates of the city as the people cheer him on.

  13. Thinking about entering a city, particularly this city, the city of Jerusalem, and being cheered on, may have reminded you about the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem on a donkey.

  14. Accepting the praises of the people, and telling off those who wanted his praises to be silenced.

  15. And so we have thoughts of battle, conflict, victory, triumph, and connecting with Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, his death and resurrection.

  16. The hymn says, ride on, ride on in majesty, in lowly pomp, ride on to die.

  17. But to begin at the beginning, with verse 1, this verse tells us that the earth belongs to God.

  18. The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof.

  19. The world and all those who live on it.

  20. Every single person or creature.

  21. Every single type of person or creature.

  22. Including those persons or creatures that are purely spiritual.

  23. Including the angels.

  24. All belong to him.

  25. Well what on earth does that mean?

  26. And how can the psalmist say it?

  27. If you watched the news last night, I try to avoid watching the news, but if you did watch the news last night,

  28. did the world that was portrayed look and sound like a world owned by God?

  29. Did the people on the news behave as though they belonged to God?

  30. As if they owed God anything?

  31. So is the psalmist completely nuts when he says this?

  32. When he says that the earth belongs to God?

  33. Well what sort of world did he live in?

  34. See I think that people sometimes think about these ancient poets,

  35. I mean this writing is around about, probably about 3,000 years old,

  36. as rather naive.

  37. And if not stupid, nobody who wrote this could be stupid, it's too beautiful.

  38. But if not stupid, at least ill informed.

  39. After all we know so much better now.

  40. We know for example that the way in verse 2 that God made the world is the way that is described here.

  41. It says he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers.

  42. But we know better don't we?

  43. Our scientists have told us that that's not right.

  44. So the psalm must be wrong.

  45. Right?

  46. And he didn't have the mass communications we had.

  47. And he didn't know about places like Iraq and Gaza.

  48. He didn't see film from those places every night on his TV screens.

  49. Of course it's not his fault.

  50. But when we get the news, it accentuates to us how badly things have gone wrong with this world.

  51. The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof.

  52. And what on earth is God doing about it, if that's true?

  53. If you think a bit further, you will remember that the psalmist did have a life expectancy rather less than ours.

  54. He did leave much closer to creation than we do.

  55. He had much less protection against sickness.

  56. He had no painkillers.

  57. Or very rudimentary ones.

  58. Infant mortality would have been high.

  59. And when the harvest failed, there really was nothing to eat.

  60. It didn't just mean food prices going up.

  61. There was nothing that would come between him and drought.

  62. Or pestilence.

  63. Or disease.

  64. There was no NHS.

  65. There was no drugs.

  66. And if anything, he had more reason to understand than we did.

  67. How often the world doesn't work the way it should.

  68. But he is not persuaded by that fact to deny God, his creator, the worship and adoration, which is his due.

  69. And neither is he persuaded to deny the fact that the world in which he lived was created by God.

  70. In fact, historically, it's only in relatively recent years that the idea of suffering a natural disaster has been taken as a reason to suggest that actually the God of the Bible can't be who the Bible says he is.

  71. It's only in the last 200 to 300 years that that idea has really taken off.

  72. In the days and weeks following the earthquake in Haiti a few years ago, there were newspaper reports.

  73. I don't know if you remember them.

  74. The Times seemed to want to do this.

  75. Almost every day for about a week, there were reports of miraculous or seemingly miraculous deliverances of people.

  76. There were reports that the churches, those which hadn't been destroyed, were full.

  77. The temporary camps that people had made for themselves were places of song and praise to God, as well as places where people were mourning their losses.

  78. And beginning to think about how to put their lives back together again.

  79. They turned to the God who made them, and having worshipped him, they asked for his help.

  80. They wept for their losses and found comfort and strength to pick up the pieces of their lives and begin again.

  81. And this would not be possible unless the earth is the Lord's.

  82. This is simply not possible in a world without God.

  83. This psalmist is looking back to ancient history.

  84. He's looking back to the creation of the world.

  85. He looks back, remembering Genesis chapter 1.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  86. God said, let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear, and it was so.

  87. God called the dry land earth.

  88. And the waters that were gathered together he called the seas.

  89. And God saw that it was good.

  90. And you remember at the end of the account of creation, God looked at all that he had made, and saw that it was very good.

  91. And the point here isn't really how God made the world, or when he made the world, or how long it took him.

  92. The point is that God did make it.

  93. The point is that when God made it, it was perfect.

  94. It was ideal.

  95. It worked.

  96. And God pronounced it very good.

  97. Enter the first man and the first woman.

  98. Enter the serpent, Satan the deceiver.

  99. And soon after, the first disobedience.

  100. And soon after, sin, death, suffering, alienation, guilt, shame, the flu virus, as one example, and conflict.

  101. But this psalm is a rejoicing, a celebration about a God who has not let go of his world.

  102. Who has not allowed his enemies, the enemies and our enemies, to have the last world.

  103. Because this psalm remembers two mighty acts of God.

  104. The first one we've touched on is creation.

  105. The second one is redemption.

  106. This God is called Yahweh.

  107. That's why the word Lord is in capital letters.

  108. And when you read in the Psalms, that word Yahweh, what you are reading is a memory of hundreds of years of God being involved with his people.

  109. Beginning when God called Abraham out of Ur, in northern Iraq.

  110. When he promised that he would make him of his descendants into a great nation.

  111. When he promised that from the seed, the descendants of Abraham, there would be blessing on the whole world.

  112. 400 years later, 500 or so years later, when he called out of slavery in Egypt, the people of Israel.

  113. When he delivered them miraculously from the hand of Pharaoh.

  114. Fighting a battle that they could not possibly fight and win.

  115. All of this memory, all of this history is concentrated here.

  116. It's taken as read by the writer of this psalm and by the original readers.

  117. They have this wonderful salvation, this wonderful history of God being with them to look back on.

  118. And so this psalm celebrates both.

  119. God isn't simply a creator.

  120. But he is concerned for his people.

  121. He is active on their behalf.

  122. And he will be active on their behalf again.

  123. The third section of the psalm.

  124. I'm going back to the second section after I've dealt with the third.

  125. It reminds us of the historical setting in which the psalm was written.

  126. It's written celebrating the return of the ark of God.

  127. And the bringing of it up to Jerusalem.

  128. And putting it very briefly, the ark of God is simply the centre of the worship of God.

  129. It's a wooden box.

  130. Inside the wooden box are the stone tablets of which God had written the law.

  131. The rod, I think, or may get this bit wrong.

  132. The rod of Aaron which budded.

  133. Above the box are two carved figures of angels, cherubim.

  134. And above them is the mercy seat.

  135. It's just a space.

  136. And it's the space where God made his presence known.

  137. It's where the high priest could enter once a year having made atonement for the sin of the people.

  138. It's the central symbol that they had.

  139. That God is present with his people.

  140. And what had happened was that, very foolishly,

  141. they had taken the ark onto the battlefield.

  142. Because they thought, we're bound to win.

  143. God's with us, we're bound to win.

  144. Superstition rather than faith.

  145. God had not promised them this.

  146. And they had no business moving the ark from where it was.

  147. And what happened was they got heavily defeated by the Philistines.

  148. The ark was captured and taken off to Ashdod.

  149. And from there, there is a most extraordinary series of events,

  150. which I haven't time to go through,

  151. whereby the ark, in effect, doesn't allow itself to remain in captivity.

  152. And the Philistines end up returning it.

  153. But it was stuck in a barn.

  154. King David defeated the Philistines completely.

  155. And united Israel under his rule.

  156. And the first thing he did after he had done that

  157. was arrange for the ark to be brought to Jerusalem.

  158. A statement that his victories had been given to him by God.

  159. And that the true king was God.

  160. And this is the setting for this psalm.

  161. As they bring the ark to the gates of the city.

  162. Massive gates.

  163. Lift up your heads, O gates,

  164. and be lifted up, O ancient doors,

  165. that the king of glory may come in

  166. to take his rightful place

  167. at the centre of the kingdom.

  168. To take his rightful place

  169. where all they come

  170. to worship him.

  171. Which poses a question,

  172. the question that verse 3

  173. asks us.

  174. Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord?

  175. And who shall stand in his holy place?

  176. What about holiness?

  177. What sort of people

  178. who come into his presence

  179. and worship him?

  180. Can anyone

  181. stand before God?

  182. What about you?

  183. If you want to reach this God,

  184. how would you do it?

  185. Do you have clean hands?

  186. Do you have a pure heart?

  187. You might have washed your hands.

  188. But clean hands are about your deeds.

  189. They're about what you've done.

  190. Have you always acted rightly?

  191. Have you always acted fairly?

  192. Is there no one

  193. that you have not wronged?

  194. Do you have a pure heart?

  195. Your thoughts?

  196. You do?

  197. You're sure?

  198. You're sure?

  199. The Bible tells us that

  200. the human heart

  201. is rotten to the core.

  202. The psalmist did not think

  203. that he could screw himself up

  204. to the last pitch of goodness

  205. that he was capable of

  206. and present himself

  207. before this God

  208. and be accepted

  209. and nor should you.

  210. In fact,

  211. if you have any idea

  212. that this is a way

  213. in which to come

  214. into his presence,

  215. it means that you've never

  216. really understood

  217. what he is like.

  218. And because the earth is his

  219. and because you are his,

  220. you are accountable

  221. to him.

  222. And you need to come

  223. in the way that he says

  224. you can come.

  225. In fact,

  226. you need to be grateful

  227. that he has provided

  228. a way

  229. for you to come

  230. at all.

  231. The Bible's ultimate answer

  232. as to how we can

  233. come before God,

  234. how we can stand

  235. in his presence,

  236. is very simple.

  237. It's very clear.

  238. You come by faith

  239. in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  240. When you come to him

  241. in repentance and faith,

  242. you receive the promises.

  243. That are made

  244. in verse 5.

  245. You will receive

  246. blessing from God.

  247. You will receive

  248. righteousness

  249. from the God

  250. of your salvation.

  251. You will receive

  252. as you

  253. repent of your sin

  254. and trust in the Lord Jesus.

  255. You will receive

  256. the gift of his

  257. Holy Spirit.

  258. You will receive

  259. new life.

  260. Described in the Old Testament

  261. as a heart of flesh

  262. to replace

  263. a heart of stone.

  264. A heart of flesh

  265. on which

  266. God by his Spirit

  267. will write his law.

  268. And we will give you

  269. the ability

  270. by faith

  271. to substantially

  272. keep the law.

  273. As we stand

  274. knowing that Jesus

  275. has died

  276. in our place

  277. and taken the penalty

  278. that is due

  279. for our sin,

  280. we can truly

  281. stand and say

  282. because of Jesus

  283. we are counted

  284. righteous

  285. but only

  286. because of Jesus.

  287. There is also

  288. a hint

  289. of the final day

  290. of history here.

  291. Writing of Jesus

  292. Paul says this

  293. God has highly

  294. exalted him

  295. and bestowed on him

  296. the name that is

  297. above every name

  298. so that the name

  299. of Jesus

  300. every knee should bow

  301. in heaven

  302. and on earth

  303. and under the earth

  304. and every tongue

  305. confess that Jesus

  306. Christ is Lord

  307. to the glory

  308. of God

  309. the Father.

  310. You see this

  311. coming

  312. of this box

  313. there is no magic

  314. in the box.

  315. It's only as

  316. God led

  317. his presence

  318. that there was

  319. anything special

  320. about this box.

  321. If you've seen

  322. Harrison Ford

  323. Raiders of the Lost Ark

  324. try and forget it.

  325. It's not helpful.

  326. It's a symbol

  327. it's a sign

  328. that God

  329. is with his people.

  330. It points

  331. to the reality.

  332. The reality

  333. was in

  334. Jesus Christ

  335. who

  336. John says

  337. in chapter 1

  338. of his gospel

  339. tabernacled with us

  340. he presenced

  341. himself with us

  342. he was God

  343. made man

  344. he was God

  345. presence

  346. in the midst

  347. of us.

  348. And he having

  349. died

  350. and having

  351. risen

  352. and having

  353. ascended

  354. he is still

  355. present with us

  356. by his spirit.

  357. That's the reality

  358. to which this

  359. psalm points.

  360. That's what's

  361. worth celebrating.

  362. If these people

  363. were excited

  364. and a box

  365. coming to the

  366. gates of their

  367. city

  368. how much

  369. more excited

  370. should we

  371. be

  372. about the

  373. reality

  374. of Jesus

  375. Christ

  376. the Son

  377. of God

  378. making himself

  379. present

  380. in our lives

  381. as we trust

  382. in him

  383. and as he

  384. forgives our

  385. sin.

  386. How exciting

  387. is that?

  388. How worth

  389. celebrating

  390. is that?

  391. Appearing

  392. before God

  393. is not

  394. optional

  395. for those

  396. who want

  397. it.

  398. It is

  399. inevitable

  400. for all

  401. people.

  402. The day

  403. will come.

  404. You better

  405. be ready.

  406. Isaiah

  407. at a low

  408. point in

  409. Israel's

  410. history

  411. longed for

  412. the reality

  413. of God's

  414. presence.

  415. The ending

  416. of human

  417. suffering and

  418. misery.

  419. He longed

  420. for the day

  421. when those

  422. who ignore

  423. and disobey

  424. God would

  425. be put to

  426. shame.

  427. Prophet Isaiah

  428. He prayed

  429. this,

  430. Oh that you

  431. would rent

  432. the heavens

  433. and come

  434. down,

  435. that the

  436. mountains

  437. might quake,

  438. at your

  439. presence.

  440. From Isaiah

  441. 64.

  442. As we look

  443. out at the

  444. world as

  445. Christians we

  446. echo that

  447. prayer.

  448. Things are

  449. still all

  450. over the

  451. place.

  452. Things are

  453. still not

  454. right.

  455. I was

  456. reminded,

  457. a friend of

  458. mine was

  459. sitting on

  460. the jury

  461. of that

  462. poor woman

  463. that was

  464. murdered.

  465. Eleven

  466. weeks of

  467. her life

  468. taking up

  469. in deciding

  470. whether the

  471. three people

  472. in the

  473. dock were

  474. innocent or

  475. guilty.

  476. we echo

  477. this prayer

  478. but we

  479. take comfort

  480. and we

  481. rejoice in

  482. the realisation

  483. that God

  484. already has

  485. come.

  486. And that

  487. by his

  488. coming the

  489. world has

  490. hope and

  491. you have

  492. hope.

  493. And if you

  494. are conscious,

  495. if you are

  496. here today and

  497. you are

  498. conscious that

  499. you are

  500. seeking him

  501. or he is

  502. seeking you

  503. but he is

  504. not, you

  505. have that

  506. sense that

  507. he's not

  508. quite there,

  509. if you are

  510. putting up

  511. doors and

  512. gates and

  513. other barriers

  514. to his

  515. coming into

  516. your life,

  517. take them

  518. down.

  519. Open up

  520. those gates

  521. so that the

  522. king of

  523. glory may

  524. come in.

  525. let's pray

  526. together.

  527. Let's pray

  528. together.

  529. Let's pray

  530. together.
