  1. It's been a privilege and an honour to be with you this morning and to share God's word

  2. !

  3. Lord God, maker of heaven and earth, our help is in you. So may now by the power of your

  4. Holy Spirit, will you come and speak to us through your word so that your Son, our Saviour,

  5. may be glorified in our lives. And we ask this in his name. Amen.

  6. On the 8th of November 1987, an IRA bomb exploded in the town of Enniskillen in County Fermanagh,

  7. Northern Ireland. It was a Sunday afternoon and people had gathered in the city, in the

  8. town centre, at the war memorial for a Remembrance Day ceremony. Eleven people were killed, 63

  9. were injured. It became known as the Poppy Day Massacre. The youngest to die that day was

  10. a young lady by the name of Marie Wilson. She'd just recently qualified as a nurse. After the

  11. bomb went off, Gordon Wilson, Marie Wilson's father, lay under the rubble and shouted to

  12. his daughter, are you all right? She found his hand and said, is that your hand, Dad? He said,

  13. are you all right? And she said, yes. He asked her for a fifth time, are you all right? And she said, Daddy,

  14. I love you very much. And those were the last words that she spoke. Hours later, Gordon Wilson gave an interview

  15. with the BBC. I remember as a kid watching it on TV that night. He described with anguish in front of the cameras,

  16. the conversation with his daughter and his feelings towards her killers. She held my hand tightly, he said,

  17. and gripped it as hard as she could. She said, Daddy, I love you very much. Those were her exact words to me.

  18. And those were the last words I ever heard her say. And then, to the astonishment of his listeners, Wilson said these words,

  19. but I bear no ill will. I bear no grudge. Dirty sort of talk of revenge is not going to bring her back.

  20. I will pray for these men tonight and every night. Historian Jonathan Barlin recounts new words in more than 25 years of violence in Northern Ireland had such a powerful emotional impact.

  21. A cup brimful of sweet water.

  22. A cup brimful of sweet water when jolted only spills sweet water.

  23. And that day, Gordon Wilson's cup was violently jolted.

  24. And the only thing it spilled was the sweet water of forgiveness.

  25. And the question is, what gives birth to that sort of forgiveness?

  26. To that sort of quick and unconditional forgiveness?

  27. Perhaps tonight you are here and you are someone who knows the pain of losing a loved one like Gordon Wilson at the hands of the evil acts of another person or group.

  28. And I'm sure you know only too well how deep Gordon Wilson would have to have dug to say those words.

  29. And to live them out in the days and weeks and years that followed.

  30. But for the majority of us here, I imagine that the offenses that we have received are not on that scale.

  31. And we should keep that in mind.

  32. We should keep that in mind.

  33. But they are nevertheless real.

  34. They nevertheless hurt.

  35. And forgiveness is never easy.

  36. That comment that that person made to you that time.

  37. That thing they did to you.

  38. That thing they returned to you in bad condition but never acknowledged that they'd broken it.

  39. That snub at church the other week.

  40. That lie that they told you.

  41. That, that, that.

  42. We all have a that moment, don't we?

  43. But whatever it is that that someone or some group has done to us, forgiveness is never easy.

  44. It always costs.

  45. But if we are Christians, if we claim to follow the Christ,

  46. then forgiveness is not an option.

  47. It's not something that you can choose whether you want to do it or not as a Christian.

  48. Forgiveness is essential to the Christian life.

  49. Martin Luther, the German reformer, said that the continual forgiveness of our neighbor

  50. is the primary and foremost duty of Christians,

  51. second only to faith and the reception of forgiveness.

  52. Second only to receiving forgiveness from Christ.

  53. The continual forgiveness of our neighbor.

  54. And it's in this passage in Matthew chapter 18

    Matthew 18 chapter mention

  55. that Jesus helps us with this issue of forgiveness.

  56. In fact, it is in this parable that we learn how Gordon Wilson could offer

  57. such quick and unconditional forgiveness.

  58. Jesus makes three very simple points in this parable.

  59. Number one.

  60. Our forgiveness of others must be unlimited.

  61. Our forgiveness of others must be unlimited.

  62. Verses 21 to 22.

  63. Then Peter came and said to him,

  64. Lord, how often will my brother sin against me and I forgive him?

  65. As many as seven times?

  66. Jesus said to him,

  67. I do not say to you seven times,

  68. but seventy-seven times.

  69. Now in order to understand Peter's question,

  70. we have to back up a little and understand the context.

  71. Did you notice the word then at the beginning of verse 21?

  72. Peter only asks this question because of what Jesus has been saying in verses 15 to 20.

  73. There Jesus was addressing the problem of an unrepentant sinner.

  74. If a person sins,

  75. you are to go and confront them.

  76. If they are unrepentant,

  77. you are to go and confront them with their sin.

  78. And if they refuse to repent,

  79. then you get two or three witnesses together.

  80. You confront them again.

  81. And if they refuse to repent,

  82. then you go and tell it to the church.

  83. And then you treat them as an unbeliever.

  84. And Peter says,

  85. Okay, Lord, I get you.

  86. I get what to do if the person is unrepentant.

  87. But what do I do if the person does say sorry and I forgive them?

  88. And then the next week,

  89. they do it again.

  90. And I forgive them.

  91. And then the next week,

  92. they do it again.

  93. And I forgive them.

  94. What do I do then?

  95. And that is the situation that Peter puts to Jesus.

  96. And Peter says,

  97. What about seven times?

  98. Is that enough?

  99. Now, seven is actually a generous number.

  100. The rabbis taught that you forgive someone three times,

  101. a repeated offender.

  102. You forgive them three times.

  103. And after that, no more.

  104. Because if you had to keep forgiving them more than three times,

  105. they clearly weren't repentant the first time.

  106. So, Peter's calculation is generous.

  107. It's double the standard plus one.

  108. So, he's looking all self-righteous.

  109. And look at what Jesus says.

  110. Verse 22.

  111. I do not say to you seven times,

  112. but seventy-seven times.

  113. Some of your translations may say

  114. seventy times seven,

  115. or four hundred and ninety.

  116. But seventy times seven is just another,

  117. it's an idiom in Greek for saying seventy-seven.

  118. Now, the number seventy-seven is not just plucked out of Jesus' head.

  119. It's not just doubling what Peter has said,

  120. seven seventy-seven.

  121. Does anybody in here know where in the Bible

  122. the number seventy-seven crops up?

  123. Genesis chapter 4, verse 24.

    Genesis 4:24

  124. If Cain is avenged seven times,

  125. then Lamech seventy-seven times.

  126. Cain felt slighted by Abel

  127. getting favor with God,

  128. and so he avenged him sevenfold by killing him,

  129. and Lamech, one of Cain's great-great-grandsons,

  130. says,

  131. that is nothing to the revenge

  132. that I will execute on the person who wrongs me.

  133. If Cain sought revenge sevenfold,

  134. I will seek it seventy-sevenfold.

  135. It is disproportionate retaliation.

  136. And it's how the world works, isn't it?

  137. A cutting word,

  138. and what's the retaliation?

  139. A raised fist.

  140. A raised fist,

  141. and what's the retaliation?

  142. Lethal weapon.

  143. A lethal weapon,

  144. and what's the retaliation?

  145. Overwhelming force.

  146. Obliterate them.

  147. And Jesus takes this approach,

  148. and he turns it inside out,

  149. upside down,

  150. and back to front.

  151. He says,

  152. in my kingdom,

  153. the attitude of forgiveness

  154. is as far in the opposite direction of Lamech's

  155. as anything you've ever seen.

  156. It is utterly disproportionate forgiveness.

  157. Peter, stop counting.

  158. Numbers and records and lists

  159. are for people who are self-righteous.

  160. Jesus says,

  161. Peter, when my people come to forgiveness,

  162. they are mathematically inept.

  163. If you are counting,

  164. then you are not forgiving.

  165. And then Jesus gives Peter a reason

  166. why our forgiveness is to be unlimited.

  167. And so he tells in verse 23 and following,

  168. a parable.

  169. And through this parable,

  170. Jesus makes a very simple point,

  171. and it's our second point.

  172. Our forgiveness of others is to be unlimited.

  173. That's the first point.

  174. Because God's forgiveness of us is unequaled.

  175. Our forgiveness of others is to be unlimited.

  176. Because, second,

  177. our God's forgiveness of us is unequaled.

  178. Verses 23 to 34.

  179. Now this parable,

  180. we could break it down into three scenes.

  181. The first scene is in the king's audience chamber.

  182. Verses 24 to 27.

  183. And it involves a conversation between a king

  184. and one of his servants.

  185. And then in scene two,

  186. it's in the servant's hall.

  187. Verses 28 to 31.

  188. And it involves a conversation

  189. between the first servant,

  190. who met with the king in the audience chamber,

  191. and a second servant.

  192. And then the third scene

  193. returns to the king's audience chamber.

  194. Verses 31 to 34.

  195. As the king readdresses the first servant.

  196. So it's a bit like an episode of Downton Abbey.

  197. Right?

  198. You've got Lord Grantham.

  199. He addresses Thomas in the main living room.

  200. And then Thomas addresses Mr. Bates

  201. in the servant's quarters downstairs.

  202. And then the other servants get wind

  203. of what's happened.

  204. And the whispers filter back up

  205. into the main house.

  206. And Lord Grantham finally calls Thomas

  207. back into the living room.

  208. And they have a conversation.

  209. So it's an ancient episode

  210. of Downton Abbey.

  211. Well, let's take a look at scene one.

  212. Verses 23 to 24.

  213. Therefore, the kingdom of heaven

  214. may be compared

  215. to a king who wished to settle

  216. accounts with his servants.

  217. When he began to settle,

  218. one servant was brought to him

  219. who owed him

  220. 10,000 talents.

  221. Now in the first century,

  222. kings often lent money and resources

  223. to provincial governors

  224. and civil servants.

  225. They would come, receive the money,

  226. and they would go away

  227. and invest the money

  228. and then eventually pay back

  229. the king,

  230. the loan that he had given them.

  231. So the scenario Jesus paints here

  232. was really not that surprising

  233. to the audience.

  234. What was surprising,

  235. what was mega surprising,

  236. was the amount the servant owed.

  237. 10,000 talents.

  238. The annual taxation

  239. of Judea, Edomia, and Samaria

  240. together was 600 talents of silver.

  241. It was more,

  242. 10,000 talents was more

  243. than the entire coinage

  244. in circulation in Egypt at the time.

  245. Okay?

  246. So this is surprising.

  247. Let me try and give you some

  248. indication of how much money this was.

  249. A talent was the highest

  250. denomination of currency

  251. in those days.

  252. It's a bit like our 50 pound note.

  253. And it was a piece of silver

  254. that weighed about 30 kilograms.

  255. That's about four stone.

  256. That's heavy.

  257. Okay?

  258. You've got to carry a talent around.

  259. A worker in these days

  260. earned a denarius

  261. for a day's work.

  262. One talent was worth

  263. 6,000 denarii.

  264. So one talent

  265. was 6,000 days

  266. of work.

  267. That's about

  268. half a lifetime

  269. of work.

  270. One talent.

  271. And this guy,

  272. how much does he owe?

  273. He owes

  274. 10,000

  275. talents.

  276. That's 60 million

  277. denarii.

  278. That's

  279. 300 tons

  280. of silver.

  281. That's

  282. 60 million

  283. days of work.

  284. That's

  285. what he owes

  286. this guy.

  287. One commentator

  288. says the equivalent

  289. of in our days

  290. not millions,

  291. not billions,

  292. not even trillions.

  293. What he owes him

  294. is

  295. zillions.

  296. So,

  297. here's

  298. hyperbole

  299. if you were here

  300. this morning.

  301. And Jesus

  302. is working

  303. it to good effect.

  304. This guy owes

  305. an unimaginable

  306. incalculable

  307. debt.

  308. So of course

  309. the servant

  310. can't pay it back.

  311. Verse 25

  312. And since

  313. he could not

  314. pay his master,

  315. since he could not

  316. pay,

  317. his master

  318. ordered him

  319. to be sold

  320. with his wife

  321. and children

  322. and all that he had

  323. and payment

  324. to be made.

  325. Now this

  326. was common enough

  327. in the Gentile world.

  328. If you had a debt

  329. and you couldn't pay it

  330. then you were sold

  331. into service

  332. or slavery

  333. of the person

  334. you owed the money to

  335. or you were sold

  336. to someone else

  337. and the money was given

  338. to pay off the debt.

  339. Now the price

  340. of an average slave

  341. could reach up

  342. to one talent.

  343. It was actually

  344. more about

  345. a tenth of a talent.

  346. About 500 denarii.

  347. 500 days wages.

  348. Now unless

  349. this guy

  350. is the most

  351. fertile man

  352. in the world

  353. never mind

  354. the Middle East

  355. with about 500

  356. kids running around

  357. he ain't ever

  358. going to pay

  359. this back.

  360. So even

  361. the king's request

  362. that this servant

  363. and his family

  364. be sold

  365. into his service

  366. or someone else's service

  367. and the money

  368. from that

  369. paid back to him

  370. is itself

  371. an act of mercy.

  372. This guy

  373. would probably

  374. have raised

  375. about seven

  376. talents

  377. from selling

  378. him

  379. and his kids.

  380. But he owes

  381. 10,000 talents.

  382. So even

  383. in these early

  384. stages

  385. there is

  386. God's

  387. divine

  388. mercy.

  389. And the servant's

  390. response

  391. is to fall

  392. on his knees

  393. and make a plea

  394. to the king

  395. verse 26.

  396. So the servant

  397. fell on his knees

  398. imploring the king

  399. have patience

  400. with me

  401. and I will

  402. pay you

  403. everything.

  404. Now think about

  405. how unrealistic

  406. that is.

  407. If you just

  408. be patient

  409. and give me

  410. 600 million

  411. days

  412. I'll get you

  413. the money.

  414. Never in his

  415. lifetime

  416. would he pay

  417. this back

  418. and the king

  419. knows it

  420. and so he

  421. responds

  422. in verse 27

  423. and out of

  424. pity for him

  425. the master

  426. of that servant

  427. released him

  428. and forgive him

  429. the death.

  430. Now the word

  431. pity is a bit

  432. weak.

  433. Even if you

  434. have an NIV

  435. or an ESV

  436. it's a weak

  437. translation.

  438. The equivalent

  439. in English

  440. is really

  441. that the king's

  442. heart wrenched

  443. that he was

  444. gutted

  445. as he looked

  446. on the poverty

  447. of this man.

  448. The word is

  449. used of Jesus

  450. a number of times

  451. it's translated

  452. compassion

  453. in the gospels

  454. elsewhere.

  455. It is a deep

  456. gutted

  457. feeling of

  458. compassion

  459. for someone

  460. who is

  461. completely

  462. helpless.

  463. And that

  464. is what

  465. this king

  466. feels

  467. towards

  468. this servant

  469. and he

  470. releases him

  471. from the

  472. debt.

  473. Now this

  474. parable

  475. helps us

  476. to understand

  477. what forgiveness

  478. is.

  479. I think

  480. in the

  481. evangelical

  482. church

  483. today

  484. there are

  485. a lot

  486. of

  487. superficial

  488. understandings

  489. of forgiveness.

  490. People think

  491. forgiveness is

  492. just brushing

  493. something under

  494. the carpet

  495. or just

  496. brushing it

  497. off.

  498. or if

  499. you do

  500. go to

  501. raise an

  502. issue

  503. with

  504. someone

  505. and they

  506. say

  507. well if

  508. you're a

  509. Christian

  510. you're

  511. supposed to

  512. forgive me

  513. so why are you

  514. raising this

  515. issue with me?

  516. But what this

  517. parable teaches us

  518. is this

  519. to forgive

  520. someone

  521. is to put

  522. the offense

  523. with its debt

  524. on the table.

  525. Do you notice that?

  526. Jesus puts

  527. a number

  528. on the debt.

  529. He says

  530. there's a debt

  531. and it's on the

  532. table

  533. and only then

  534. and only then

  535. when the debt

  536. is put

  537. on the table

  538. is the

  539. offender

  540. to be released

  541. from paying

  542. that debt.

  543. That is what

  544. forgiveness is.

  545. It does not

  546. involve brushing

  547. the debt

  548. under the

  549. carpet.

  550. It involves

  551. putting the

  552. debt

  553. on the

  554. table.

  555. Naming

  556. it

  557. blaming

  558. it

  559. condemning

  560. the offense

  561. and then

  562. releasing

  563. the person

  564. from having

  565. to pay it.

  566. And what we

  567. have here

  568. is an

  569. unimaginable

  570. debt

  571. and an

  572. unmanageable

  573. debt.

  574. It is

  575. unpayable

  576. and yet

  577. it is

  578. completely

  579. wiped out.

  580. Completely

  581. wiped out.

  582. And Jesus

  583. wants us to be

  584. amazed at the

  585. forgiveness of

  586. this king.

  587. It is full.

  588. It is free.

  589. It is complete.

  590. No strings

  591. attached.

  592. And that

  593. is a picture

  594. of forgiveness.

  595. Now we

  596. come to

  597. scene

  598. two.

  599. Thomas

  600. and Mr.

  601. Bees

  602. down in

  603. the

  604. servants

  605. quarters.

  606. The

  607. camera

  608. leaves the

  609. king's

  610. audience

  611. chamber

  612. and it

  613. moves

  614. downstairs.

  615. The

  616. conversation

  617. of the

  618. second

  619. scene

  620. follows a

  621. similar

  622. pattern to

  623. the first

  624. scene but

  625. there are

  626. some surprising

  627. differences.

  628. Verse 28

  629. But when

  630. the same

  631. servant

  632. went out

  633. who had

  634. been

  635. forgiven

  636. he found

  637. one of

  638. his

  639. fellow

  640. servants

  641. who owed

  642. him a

  643. hundred

  644. denarii

  645. and seizing

  646. him he began

  647. to choke

  648. him saying

  649. pay what

  650. you owe.

  651. Now do you

  652. see the

  653. difference?

  654. Ten thousand

  655. talents

  656. one hundred

  657. denarii.

  658. Now that was

  659. a hundred

  660. denarii was not

  661. an insignificant

  662. amount of

  663. money.

  664. In those

  665. days it was

  666. a hundred

  667. days wages

  668. it was three

  669. or four

  670. months work.

  671. This fellow

  672. servant owed

  673. the first

  674. servant a

  675. hundred

  676. days work.

  677. For us

  678. that would

  679. probably be

  680. equivalent of

  681. five to

  682. ten thousand

  683. pounds.

  684. That's not

  685. insignificant.

  686. If someone

  687. owes you

  688. five to

  689. ten thousand

  690. pounds you'd

  691. expect them to

  692. pay it back

  693. wouldn't you?

  694. But in

  695. comparison to

  696. the first

  697. debt how

  698. significant is

  699. it?

  700. Completely

  701. insignificant.

  702. It is one

  703. six hundredth

  704. of the first

  705. debt.

  706. Hundred

  707. denarii

  708. ten thousand

  709. talents.

  710. It's not even

  711. comparable.

  712. But what is

  713. also not

  714. comparable is

  715. the first

  716. servant's

  717. response to

  718. his debtor.

  719. The king

  720. responded

  721. calmly

  722. reasonably

  723. that him

  724. and his

  725. family should

  726. be sold

  727. but now that

  728. the shoe

  729. is on the

  730. other foot

  731. do you see

  732. the response?

  733. Pay what

  734. you owe.

  735. And he

  736. starts choking

  737. him.

  738. What is

  739. interesting is

  740. that the

  741. servant in

  742. debt offers

  743. virtually the

  744. exact same

  745. plea for

  746. patience and

  747. more time as

  748. the first

  749. servant.

  750. Did you see

  751. that?

  752. In verse

  753. 26 the

  754. first servant

  755. says have

  756. patience with

  757. me and I

  758. will pay you

  759. back.

  760. Unlikely.

  761. Six hundred

  762. million days of

  763. work.

  764. This guy says

  765. have patience

  766. with me and I

  767. will pay you

  768. back.

  769. Very reasonable.

  770. A hundred

  771. days work.

  772. let me work

  773. for a hundred

  774. days and I'll

  775. pay you

  776. back.

  777. But this

  778. servant responds

  779. with ruthless

  780. unforgiveness.

  781. The king

  782. forgave a debt

  783. that was

  784. unmanageable

  785. unimaginable

  786. and this

  787. servant will

  788. not forgive

  789. a debt

  790. that is

  791. minor.

  792. And we

  793. are supposed

  794. to feel

  795. indignant

  796. indignant

  797. at this

  798. injustice.

  799. Well the

  800. rumours of

  801. what has

  802. happened in

  803. the corridors

  804. of the

  805. servants'

  806. quarters then

  807. filters back

  808. up into the

  809. king's audience

  810. chamber which

  811. brings us to

  812. scene 3

  813. verse 31

  814. to 33.

  815. When his

  816. fellow servant

  817. saw what had

  818. taken place

  819. sorry the first

  820. servant had him

  821. thrown into

  822. prison until he

  823. could pay it

  824. back.

  825. And then scene

  826. 3 when his

  827. fellow servant

  828. saw what had

  829. taken place

  830. they were

  831. greatly distressed

  832. and they went

  833. and reported it

  834. to their

  835. master all

  836. that had

  837. taken place.

  838. Then his

  839. master summoned

  840. him the first

  841. servant and

  842. said to him

  843. you wicked

  844. servant I

  845. forgave you

  846. all that

  847. debt of

  848. 10,000

  849. talents

  850. because you

  851. pleaded with

  852. me and should

  853. you not have

  854. had mercy on

  855. your fellow

  856. servant who

  857. owed you

  858. a hundred

  859. denarii

  860. as I

  861. had had

  862. mercy on

  863. you.

  864. So the

  865. point of

  866. the parable

  867. is simple

  868. our

  869. forgiveness

  870. of others

  871. must be

  872. unlimited

  873. because God's

  874. forgiveness

  875. of us

  876. is unequaled.

  877. Our

  878. forgiveness

  879. of others

  880. must be

  881. unlimited

  882. because God's

  883. forgiveness

  884. of us

  885. is unequaled.

  886. And this

  887. is why

  888. Gordon

  889. Wilson was

  890. able to

  891. express love

  892. and forgiveness

  893. forgiveness

  894. to his

  895. daughter's

  896. killers

  897. only hours

  898. after losing

  899. her so

  900. tragically

  901. because he

  902. was a

  903. Christian.

  904. He was a

  905. Christian who

  906. understood

  907. that what he

  908. owed to

  909. God was a

  910. zillion times

  911. more than

  912. what these

  913. murderers

  914. owed to

  915. him.

  916. no one

  917. could ever

  918. grieve him

  919. or offend

  920. him more

  921. than he

  922. had grieved

  923. or offended

  924. God.

  925. And I

  926. think the

  927. reason why

  928. as Christians

  929. and as

  930. human beings

  931. in general

  932. why we

  933. struggle to

  934. forgive is

  935. because we

  936. have lost

  937. the proportionality

  938. of our

  939. offense to

  940. God and

  941. the

  942. disproportionality

  943. of his

  944. response to

  945. us.

  946. We have

  947. lost the

  948. proportionality

  949. of our

  950. offense to

  951. God and

  952. the

  953. disproportionality

  954. of his

  955. response to

  956. us.

  957. Our

  958. offense to

  959. God is

  960. directly

  961. proportional to

  962. his dignity,

  963. to his

  964. being.

  965. It's not

  966. the length

  967. of our sin

  968. that determines

  969. the debt we

  970. owe God.

  971. It is the

  972. height of

  973. our sin.

  974. It is the

  975. gravity of

  976. what we

  977. have done.

  978. Let's

  979. say a

  980. young boy

  981. is playing

  982. with his

  983. sister in

  984. the living

  985. room and

  986. there is a

  987. bit of an

  988. argument and

  989. she steals a

  990. toy from him

  991. and he

  992. slaps her in

  993. the face.

  994. Do you

  995. think the

  996. boy should

  997. be punished?

  998. Well,

  999. yeah.

  1000. He's just

  1001. slapped.

  1002. Let's say

  1003. it's a

  1004. brother,

  1005. sorry.

  1006. He slaps

  1007. his brother

  1008. in the face.

  1009. Let's say

  1010. the next day

  1011. he's playing

  1012. with his

  1013. sister and

  1014. the same

  1015. thing happens

  1016. and he

  1017. slaps his

  1018. sister in

  1019. the face.

  1020. Should he

  1021. receive the

  1022. same punishment

  1023. for slapping

  1024. his sister

  1025. in the face

  1026. as he did

  1027. for slapping

  1028. his brother

  1029. in the face?

  1030. I would

  1031. say no.

  1032. It should

  1033. be a more

  1034. severe punishment.

  1035. What if

  1036. the mother

  1037. comes into

  1038. the room

  1039. and there's

  1040. an even

  1041. bigger fight

  1042. and he

  1043. turns around

  1044. and he

  1045. slaps his

  1046. mother in

  1047. the face?

  1048. Should the

  1049. punishment he

  1050. receives for

  1051. slapping his

  1052. mother in

  1053. the face

  1054. be more

  1055. than what he

  1056. received for

  1057. slapping his

  1058. sister in

  1059. the face or

  1060. for slapping

  1061. his brother

  1062. in the face?

  1063. Let's say

  1064. he passes

  1065. his Duke of

  1066. Edinburgh

  1067. award and

  1068. for some

  1069. reason the

  1070. Duke of

  1071. Edinburgh

  1072. doesn't turn

  1073. up and the

  1074. Queen turns

  1075. up to give

  1076. him the

  1077. award.

  1078. And for

  1079. some reason

  1080. as she goes

  1081. to shake

  1082. his hand he

  1083. decides to

  1084. slap the

  1085. Queen in the

  1086. face.

  1087. Now do

  1088. you think he

  1089. should get

  1090. the same

  1091. discipline for

  1092. slapping the

  1093. Queen in the

  1094. face as he

  1095. did for

  1096. slapping his

  1097. younger brother

  1098. in the face?

  1099. Well of

  1100. course not.

  1101. The punishment

  1102. is calculated

  1103. on the

  1104. dignity of

  1105. the person

  1106. that you

  1107. have offended.

  1108. The height

  1109. of our sin

  1110. is determined

  1111. by the

  1112. dignity of

  1113. the person

  1114. we have

  1115. offended and

  1116. God does

  1117. not differ

  1118. from the

  1119. Queen in

  1120. degree but

  1121. in kind.

  1122. He does

  1123. not differ

  1124. from the

  1125. Queen in

  1126. degree.

  1127. He's not

  1128. just one

  1129. notch up

  1130. from the

  1131. Queen.

  1132. He is in

  1133. a different

  1134. category

  1135. altogether.

  1136. And if

  1137. that is who

  1138. we have

  1139. offended,

  1140. the most

  1141. beautiful and

  1142. lovely and

  1143. excellent and

  1144. glorious and

  1145. majestic and

  1146. winsome and

  1147. delightful being

  1148. in the

  1149. universe,

  1150. if that is

  1151. who we

  1152. have offended

  1153. then we

  1154. owe him

  1155. infinitely.

  1156. We deserve

  1157. infinite punishment

  1158. if we have

  1159. not honoured

  1160. such a being.

  1161. That is what

  1162. creates the

  1163. incalculable

  1164. debt.

  1165. We slap

  1166. in the face

  1167. the creator

  1168. of the

  1169. universe.

  1170. And we

  1171. don't just

  1172. slap in the

  1173. face as

  1174. our

  1175. maker.

  1176. Actually

  1177. when he

  1178. came among

  1179. us,

  1180. what did

  1181. we do

  1182. to him?

  1183. We slapped

  1184. him in

  1185. the face

  1186. physically.

  1187. We stuck

  1188. him on a

  1189. cross.

  1190. The most

  1191. meek and

  1192. humble of

  1193. all men

  1194. who ever

  1195. walked the

  1196. face of

  1197. the earth.

  1198. And if you

  1199. and me had

  1200. been there,

  1201. we would

  1202. have slapped

  1203. him in

  1204. the face.

  1205. ashamed,

  1206. I hear

  1207. my mocking

  1208. voice call

  1209. out among

  1210. the scoffers.

  1211. It was my

  1212. sin that

  1213. held him

  1214. there until

  1215. it was

  1216. accomplished.

  1217. Our

  1218. offence to

  1219. God is

  1220. directly

  1221. proportional to

  1222. his being

  1223. and dignity.

  1224. And what

  1225. was God's

  1226. response to

  1227. our sin,

  1228. to slapping

  1229. him in the

  1230. face as our

  1231. creator?

  1232. He sent

  1233. his one

  1234. and only

  1235. son to

  1236. be the

  1237. savior of

  1238. the world.

  1239. What was

  1240. Jesus'

  1241. response when

  1242. we slapped

  1243. him in the

  1244. face?

  1245. Father,

  1246. forgive them

  1247. for they do

  1248. not know

  1249. what they

  1250. do.

  1251. And what

  1252. was God's

  1253. response?

  1254. Did he

  1255. punish us

  1256. instead of

  1257. Christ when

  1258. we slapped

  1259. him in the

  1260. face?

  1261. How great

  1262. the pain

  1263. of searing

  1264. loss.

  1265. The

  1266. father

  1267. turns his

  1268. face away

  1269. as wounds

  1270. which mar

  1271. the chosen

  1272. one bring

  1273. many sons

  1274. to glory.

  1275. God the

  1276. father punished

  1277. his own

  1278. incarnate son

  1279. to save us

  1280. from himself

  1281. and he did

  1282. so in the

  1283. very moment

  1284. of the most

  1285. violent expression

  1286. of our

  1287. hatred of

  1288. his son.

  1289. In the

  1290. most violent

  1291. expression of

  1292. our hatred

  1293. of his son

  1294. God the

  1295. father did

  1296. not come

  1297. down and

  1298. rescue his

  1299. son but

  1300. he let it

  1301. play out

  1302. so that he

  1303. might forgive

  1304. us.

  1305. Well might

  1306. the sun in

  1307. darkness hide

  1308. and shut

  1309. his glories

  1310. in when

  1311. Christ the

  1312. mighty maker

  1313. died for

  1314. man the

  1315. creature's

  1316. sin.

  1317. Thus might

  1318. I hide my

  1319. blushing

  1320. face while

  1321. his dear

  1322. cross appears,

  1323. dissolve my

  1324. heart in

  1325. thankfulness

  1326. and melt

  1327. my eyes

  1328. to tears.

  1329. But drops

  1330. of grief

  1331. can ne'er

  1332. repay the

  1333. debt of

  1334. love I

  1335. owe.

  1336. Here

  1337. Lord I

  1338. give myself

  1339. away,

  1340. tis all

  1341. that I

  1342. can do.

  1343. The debt

  1344. of love

  1345. I owe.

  1346. This is

  1347. the well

  1348. from which

  1349. Gordon Wilson

  1350. drank in the

  1351. bitter moments

  1352. of losing

  1353. his daughter.

  1354. Our

  1355. offense to

  1356. God is

  1357. directly

  1358. proportional to

  1359. his dignity

  1360. and his

  1361. response to

  1362. us is

  1363. completely

  1364. disproportional

  1365. to what we

  1366. did to

  1367. him.

  1368. We slapped

  1369. him in the

  1370. face as our

  1371. creator, we

  1372. slapped him in

  1373. the face as

  1374. our saviour,

  1375. we spat at

  1376. him, we

  1377. crucified him

  1378. and he

  1379. said I

  1380. forgive you.

  1381. I forgive

  1382. you.

  1383. And that

  1384. is Jesus'

  1385. point.

  1386. Our

  1387. forgiveness of

  1388. others must

  1389. be unlimited.

  1390. Why?

  1391. Because God's

  1392. forgiveness of

  1393. us is

  1394. unequal.

  1395. But Jesus

  1396. does not

  1397. leave it

  1398. there.

  1399. He has a

  1400. final point

  1401. to make in

  1402. verses 34

  1403. to 35.

  1404. Unforgiveness

  1405. of others

  1406. is unforgivable.

  1407. Unforgiveness

  1408. of others

  1409. is unforgivable.

  1410. He ends

  1411. the parable

  1412. with a

  1413. warning and

  1414. in anger

  1415. his master

  1416. delivered him

  1417. to the

  1418. jailers, the

  1419. first servant,

  1420. until he

  1421. should pay

  1422. all his

  1423. debt.

  1424. And so

  1425. also my

  1426. heavenly

  1427. father will

  1428. do to

  1429. every one

  1430. of you if

  1431. you do

  1432. not forgive

  1433. your brother

  1434. from your

  1435. heart.

  1436. Jesus is

  1437. saying,

  1438. Peter,

  1439. forgiveness

  1440. is not

  1441. optional for

  1442. you.

  1443. Forgiveness

  1444. is not an

  1445. added extra

  1446. of the

  1447. Christian life.

  1448. It's not

  1449. like when

  1450. you go to

  1451. buy a

  1452. car,

  1453. they say

  1454. would you

  1455. like tinted

  1456. windows or

  1457. not?

  1458. Do you want

  1459. air conditioning

  1460. or not?

  1461. Do you want

  1462. a stereo

  1463. system or

  1464. not?

  1465. It's not

  1466. like when

  1467. you become

  1468. a Christian

  1469. God says,

  1470. do you want

  1471. to add on

  1472. that you need

  1473. to forgive

  1474. people or

  1475. should we

  1476. just leave

  1477. that off?

  1478. Jesus comes

  1479. to us and

  1480. says,

  1481. you cannot

  1482. expect

  1483. unequaled

  1484. forgiveness

  1485. from God

  1486. and then

  1487. limit

  1488. your forgiveness

  1489. to others.

  1490. You can't

  1491. expect God

  1492. to stop

  1493. counting your

  1494. sins and

  1495. then you

  1496. keep counting

  1497. your

  1498. offenders

  1499. sins.

  1500. Now this

  1501. is not a

  1502. threat.

  1503. If you

  1504. don't

  1505. forgive

  1506. then God

  1507. will take

  1508. away your

  1509. salvation

  1510. as if your

  1511. salvation is

  1512. earned on

  1513. the basis

  1514. of you

  1515. forgiving

  1516. others.

  1517. This is

  1518. not purgatory.

  1519. You're

  1520. saved and

  1521. if you

  1522. don't

  1523. forgive

  1524. then you

  1525. go to

  1526. hell and

  1527. you pay

  1528. for it

  1529. for a

  1530. bit.

  1531. You pay

  1532. for your

  1533. unforgiveness

  1534. and then

  1535. you get

  1536. released

  1537. after that.

  1538. Now Jesus

  1539. is not

  1540. saying that

  1541. your forgiveness

  1542. of others

  1543. guarantees or

  1544. maintains

  1545. your

  1546. forgiven

  1547. state before

  1548. God.

  1549. Jesus is

  1550. making a

  1551. very simple

  1552. point and

  1553. it's this.

  1554. Forgiven

  1555. people

  1556. forgive.

  1557. Unforgiven

  1558. people

  1559. don't

  1560. forgive.

  1561. Forgiven

  1562. people

  1563. forgive.

  1564. Unforgiven

  1565. people don't

  1566. forgive.

  1567. If you

  1568. forgive others

  1569. it simply

  1570. demonstrates

  1571. that you

  1572. have understood

  1573. God's

  1574. forgiveness

  1575. of you.

  1576. To not

  1577. forgive others

  1578. is to

  1579. receive God's

  1580. punishment.

  1581. Can I

  1582. put it

  1583. as starkly

  1584. as Jesus

  1585. does here

  1586. hell is

  1587. for those

  1588. who will

  1589. not

  1590. forgive.

  1591. C.S.

  1592. Lewis

  1593. put it

  1594. starkly

  1595. we must

  1596. forgive

  1597. all our

  1598. enemies

  1599. or be

  1600. damned.

  1601. To not

  1602. forgive from

  1603. the heart

  1604. is to show

  1605. that we've

  1606. never really

  1607. grasped

  1608. forgiveness.

  1609. forgiveness.

  1610. And that's

  1611. the point

  1612. about the

  1613. first servant.

  1614. He had

  1615. not ever

  1616. really grasped

  1617. what the

  1618. king had

  1619. let him

  1620. off with.

  1621. And that

  1622. is why

  1623. he wouldn't

  1624. offer

  1625. forgiveness

  1626. to a

  1627. fellow

  1628. servant.

  1629. the reason

  1630. Gordon

  1631. Wilson could

  1632. stand before

  1633. the world's

  1634. media that

  1635. day only

  1636. hours after

  1637. losing his

  1638. daughter and

  1639. speak words

  1640. of love and

  1641. forgiveness

  1642. was because

  1643. he had

  1644. grasped the

  1645. gospel.

  1646. Or rather

  1647. it had

  1648. grasped

  1649. him.

  1650. But God

  1651. demonstrates his

  1652. love for us

  1653. in this.

  1654. While we

  1655. were still

  1656. sinners.

  1657. Not while we

  1658. had repented.

  1659. Not after we

  1660. had repented.

  1661. While we

  1662. were still

  1663. sinners.

  1664. Christ

  1665. died for

  1666. us.

  1667. You see

  1668. on your

  1669. service sheet

  1670. we have

  1671. the Lord's

  1672. Prayer.

  1673. And it's

  1674. appropriate I

  1675. think to

  1676. pray this

  1677. together now

  1678. keeping in

  1679. mind in

  1680. particular the

  1681. fourth line

  1682. forgive us

  1683. our sins as

  1684. we forgive

  1685. those who

  1686. sin against

  1687. us.

  1688. We'll have a

  1689. moment of

  1690. quiet reflection

  1691. and then we'll

  1692. say this

  1693. prayer together.
