  1. So, you've got Romeo and Juliet, Cleopatra and Mark Antony, Lizzie Bennet and Mr. Darcy.

  2. ! They're all classic romance stories, aren't they?

  3. And the book of Ruth, if you've read it, you'll know that it has got everything we'd expect from an epic love story.

  4. It's got the sadness at the beginning, the disappointment, the waiting, it's got the confusion, the attraction, and then finally the marriage.

  5. And Ruth and her husband-to-be, Boaz, in the story, are one of the great unlikely romances of the whole Bible, aren't they?

  6. Now, I don't know whether this is true, I hope it's not a stereotype, but the big book of Ruth is perhaps one of the books that is very close to women's hearts.

  7. As I've been chatting to some of you over the last few weeks, that seems to be the case.

  8. It's one of the few books in the Bible that's named after a woman, isn't it?

  9. And in many ways, women do dominate the story.

  10. Ruth and Naomi, it's a sort of Thelma and Louise kind of story.

  11. So it's written about women, set in a women's world, with women's concerns and cares.

  12. It deals with childbirth and husbands and women's work and marriage.

  13. But actually, I want to say to us from the beginning, that as we begin looking at Ruth, while it feels like a very feminine book, and it is a romance story,

  14. It's a romance story driven by redemption.

  15. Redemption that comes through the main male character in the book, Boaz, who we meet at the beginning of chapter 2.

  16. So I think there are lessons of male sexuality and leadership in the book.

  17. And Boaz will be the man through whom the lives of women in the book are transformed.

  18. Boaz will turn Naomi and Ruth's fortunes around.

  19. He will redeem their situation.

  20. So it's a book about romance, but it's also a book of redemption.

  21. Now over 23 times in the book, the word redemption or redeemer is actually used.

  22. So it's a story in which the women characters are redeemed by a man.

  23. Romance and redemption.

  24. And the writer highlights redemption in the book, not just to show us how men should behave in society with women,

  25. but to point to the man, the redeemer of all mankind, Jesus Christ.

  26. So Ruth is a kind of shorthand version, really, of the whole Bible story.

  27. God's big story of romance.

  28. Of him wooing his people, of lavishing his love upon them and turning their lives around.

  29. Of redeeming them back from death through his son, the man, Jesus Christ, the redeemer.

  30. So that's where we're heading over the next four weeks.

  31. I hope you can be with us for the next three evenings in August.

  32. I want us to look at chapter one tonight, and I've got three headings to help us through that.

  33. It is the romance and the redemption.

  34. But firstly, at the beginning of Ruth in chapter one, we see the misery of leaving the Lord.

  35. The misery of leaving the Lord.

  36. So the first chapter of Ruth is a chapter full of misery.

  37. It is a chapter full of weeping and loss and bitterness, isn't it?

  38. Back in verse one, we're introduced to an Israelite family from Bethlehem in Judah.

  39. And the father in the family is a man called Elimelech.

  40. We're introduced to him.

  41. Now Judah, the land that they live in, we're told has been hit by a famine.

  42. So Elimelech in verse two, he packs his bags and he says to the family,

  43. Listen, we're going to head out of the land of Judah and we're going to live, sojourn in the land of Moab.

  44. So he takes his wife, Naomi, and their two sons.

  45. So do you see, they leave the Lord's land.

  46. They leave Judah.

  47. And they go outside of the promised land.

  48. Now over time, the two sons marry foreign Moabite girls.

  49. And those girls are called Orpah and Ruth.

  50. But do you see, by verse five, ten years on, out in Moab, all the men in the story have died, haven't they?

  51. Look at verse five.

  52. Both Malon and Chilion, the two sons, died.

  53. So that the woman was left without her two sons and her husband.

  54. Now if you can just picture the scene for Naomi there.

  55. Naomi stands, doesn't she, at the graveside of her husband.

  56. And the two sons are buried either side, perhaps, of the grave.

  57. You know, we've got some young lads in our family.

  58. We saw my nephews a few weeks ago.

  59. They're great fun.

  60. And their mother absolutely don'ts on them.

  61. And I just cannot imagine, I can't bring myself to think,

  62. of the pain that it would cause the family if anything should happen to those lads.

  63. It's just unthinkable.

  64. Just imagine the funeral of those two lads.

  65. Naomi has to watch her own children die.

  66. Any mother would be shattered by that, wouldn't they?

  67. And so she has just a numbing pain, away from Judah and in the land of Moab.

  68. You know, the name Naomi means pleasant.

  69. But by the end of the chapter she wants to change her name, doesn't she, in verse 20,

  70. to Marah, which means bitter.

  71. No, no, no.

  72. No, no.

  73. Life is not pleasant in Moab.

  74. It's bitter for this woman.

  75. For these widows left behind.

  76. It is one of those families, isn't it, that just gets struck with disaster after disaster,

  77. heartbreak after heartbreak.

  78. Broken lives and emptiness.

  79. But can you see here that it's the misery and the broken heartedness caused by the foolish man,

  80. Elimelech, as he has led them away from the Lord.

  81. It is the misery of the separation that has happened between them and the Lord.

  82. They've left the Lord's land, Judah.

  83. They've left the Lord.

  84. Even though it might look pleasant, Naomi says,

  85. No, no.

  86. Life away from the Lord has left me bitter and full of sorrow.

  87. Life away from the Lord has just left me amidst death and pain.

  88. Now, the book of Ruth, it comes in the Bible after the book of Judges.

  89. If you didn't know that, Ruth starts off in verse 1, doesn't it?

  90. In the days when the judges ruled.

  91. There was a famine in the land.

  92. Now, that helpfully sets the time frame for us for the book of Ruth.

  93. At that point, alarm bells should be ringing

  94. because there's an unmistakable problem about this time in the Bible story in this period.

  95. Just flip back one page to the last verse of the book of Judges.

  96. Just have a look there.

  97. Chapter 21, verse 25.

  98. In those days there was no king in Israel.

  99. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

  100. Now, Judges is a famous book, isn't it?

  101. You've got stories like Samson and Gideon and Ehud.

  102. But if you read Judges, you'll see that it's like a never-ending downward spiral

  103. of bad behaviour and of sin,

  104. followed by misery,

  105. followed by God sending a rescuer or a judge,

  106. and then sin again,

  107. and then more misery,

  108. and God sending them a rescuer.

  109. It's the same again and again and again.

  110. The people, it says there,

  111. are without a king to lead them in living for God.

  112. And they're all just doing what each one of them thinks is best in their own eyes.

  113. Each person did what was right in their own eyes.

  114. They did what was right in their own eyes.

  115. They did what was right in their own eyes.

  116. Again and again.

  117. Each person calls the shots in their own life.

  118. Now, don't forget that this is after Moses, isn't it?

  119. So they've all got God's law in their society.

  120. They've got the Bible.

  121. They know how they should live.

  122. But they're not listening to God's law,

  123. and they're not living in that way.

  124. They make up the rules on the spot,

  125. doing what seems to be best in my eyes,

  126. for my life, best for me.

  127. God is just left out of the picture.

  128. And so do you see, the famine comes in verse 1.

  129. There is a famine in the land of Judah,

  130. and that shouldn't surprise us.

  131. Because famines were a sign from God

  132. to the people to say,

  133. you are in danger.

  134. As you reject me, you are in great danger.

  135. A famine was a warning sign.

  136. It was a call out from God to say,

  137. come back and live in the right way.

  138. Deuteronomy chapter 28 says this,

    Deuteronomy 28 chapter mention

  139. If you will not obey the voice of the Lord your God,

  140. or be careful to do his commandments,

  141. then cursed shall you be in the field.

  142. Cursed shall your basket and your kneading ball be.

  143. Cursed shall be the fruit of your womb,

  144. and the fruit of your ground.

  145. So the condition of the land

  146. was like a gauge

  147. as to how their relationship with God was going.

  148. So famine was a signpost from God

  149. saying loud and clear,

  150. come back to me.

  151. Because they weren't listening to him,

  152. and they weren't living for him.

  153. They needed to turn back to him,

  154. but when the signpost comes for a limelight,

  155. that's the last place he goes, isn't it?

  156. He says to the family,

  157. there's no food here.

  158. It's no good returning to God,

  159. looking to the Lord,

  160. and to his land,

  161. and for his food.

  162. So he leads them to sojourn

  163. in the land of Moab.

  164. He leads them away

  165. from the Lord

  166. and his blessings.

  167. It's ironic,

  168. because the name Elimelech

  169. actually means,

  170. my God is king.

  171. My God is king.

  172. He was a Christian

  173. in name,

  174. but not in faith,

  175. not in action.

  176. He leads his family

  177. away from the Lord.

  178. When the going gets tough,

  179. he's the family leader, isn't he?

  180. But he doesn't run to God,

  181. he runs from God.

  182. He did what was right

  183. in his own eyes.

  184. He looked at what was in front of his face,

  185. and he ran from God.

  186. So the famine comes,

  187. hard times come,

  188. but Elimelech doesn't wait

  189. for God's bread,

  190. does he?

  191. He goes for Moab's bread.

  192. There's an obvious problem here,

  193. but Elimelech addresses

  194. the wrong problem,

  195. the lack of bread,

  196. rather than

  197. the lack of relationship

  198. with God.

  199. He leaves the Lord.

  200. And Elimelech's story,

  201. it ends in tragedy,

  202. doesn't it?

  203. Because he dies in Moab,

  204. he dies away from God.

  205. If hard times come,

  206. if famine comes,

  207. I wonder,

  208. by the time

  209. you and I die,

  210. where will we

  211. have taken our families,

  212. if we have families?

  213. No matter what you go through

  214. on the way,

  215. will you have taken them out

  216. to Moab?

  217. What sort of legacy

  218. will you leave behind?

  219. We pray,

  220. don't we,

  221. that we will never

  222. take our families away

  223. from the Lord,

  224. just doing what is right

  225. in our own eyes.

  226. So we see the misery

  227. of leaving the Lord

  228. for Naomi.

  229. The misery of leaving

  230. the Lord.

  231. But secondly,

  232. is there determination

  233. to return to the Lord?

  234. The determination

  235. to the return to the Lord.

  236. Now there's an old TV ad,

  237. it's one of my favourite adverts,

  238. The Hovis,

  239. the bread brand,

  240. where a child runs away

  241. from the family home.

  242. It's quite an old advert.

  243. But you know,

  244. mum doesn't panic

  245. because she knows

  246. the one thing

  247. that will bring him back

  248. without fail.

  249. It is the alluring smell

  250. of freshly baked Hovis,

  251. isn't it?

  252. So the aroma

  253. waffes down those

  254. Huddersfield streets

  255. and that guy

  256. starts playing the trumpet

  257. and the lad comes back.

  258. It's a really moving story,

  259. actually.

  260. Now,

  261. Naomi gets a whiff

  262. of something,

  263. doesn't she?

  264. Just have a look

  265. at verse 6.

  266. Naomi,

  267. she arose with her daughters-in-law

  268. to return from the country

  269. of Moab.

  270. For she had heard

  271. in the fields of Moab

  272. that the Lord

  273. had visited his people

  274. and given them food.

  275. So there she is

  276. in the fields of Moab.

  277. She hears that

  278. there is more to be had

  279. back in Judah,

  280. back in the Lord's land.

  281. Now,

  282. we're told that they've been

  283. in Moab

  284. for about 10 years.

  285. Now,

  286. just think for a moment.

  287. Without our modern communication

  288. that we have today,

  289. we don't actually know

  290. how long it took

  291. for Naomi to find out

  292. that there was any food

  293. back in Judah,

  294. do we?

  295. Could have been weeks.

  296. Could have been months,

  297. even.

  298. Just think of all that time

  299. that Naomi could have been

  300. feasting

  301. back in the Lord's land

  302. when she remained

  303. in the fields of Moab.

  304. Naomi and the girls

  305. were outside of God's land,

  306. outside of his covenant blessings.

  307. They were outside of

  308. God's people,

  309. the church

  310. in the fields of Moab.

  311. Being away from the Lord

  312. and it could have been

  313. so much better for them,

  314. couldn't it?

  315. Life in Moab,

  316. it was slowly starving them,

  317. sapping their life.

  318. That is life, isn't it?

  319. Away from the Lord.

  320. It's just sapping.

  321. Life away from the Lord,

  322. always eating,

  323. but always hungry,

  324. never really satisfied.

  325. But there is a feast

  326. available with the Lord

  327. and with his people

  328. back in his land.

  329. And that's part of

  330. becoming a Christian,

  331. isn't it?

  332. It is to say,

  333. why should I do

  334. without bread?

  335. Why should I starve

  336. when I can go back to God

  337. and I can feast

  338. from all that he gives to me?

  339. Don't we want to be a church

  340. where people look in

  341. and they go,

  342. wow, the hovis is in the oven.

  343. It smells so good in there.

  344. What is that aroma?

  345. What are they feasting on in there?

  346. Why should I do without that?

  347. So Naomi,

  348. she's determined

  349. to return to the Lord

  350. because there's a feast

  351. for her.

  352. Now, Elimelech's choice

  353. to leave the Lord earlier

  354. has limited

  355. the life

  356. and provision

  357. of the family,

  358. hasn't it?

  359. Faced with a famine,

  360. he thought,

  361. you know,

  362. I'll grab what is right

  363. in front of my face

  364. and I'll get away

  365. from Judah

  366. and I'll go to Moab.

  367. Now, it's interesting

  368. if you look at

  369. how those two places

  370. are described in the passage.

  371. Now, every time Moab

  372. is mentioned,

  373. it's called

  374. the country of Moab,

  375. isn't it?

  376. Verse 1,

  377. the country of Moab.

  378. Verse 2,

  379. the country of Moab.

  380. Verse 6,

  381. the country of Moab.

  382. Again.

  383. Whereas Judah is called

  384. the land of Moab,

  385. the land of Judah.

  386. Verse 1,

  387. the land.

  388. Verse 7,

  389. the land of Judah.

  390. Country and land.

  391. Now, those two words

  392. are at polar opposites

  393. in terms of size

  394. and of scale,

  395. of place.

  396. It's probably

  397. the opposite

  398. of what we'd usually think.

  399. But the word land

  400. is used over 300 times

  401. in the Bible

  402. and it means

  403. the earth,

  404. the whole world,

  405. the big wide world.

  406. And the word country,

  407. country of Moab,

  408. is used far less.

  409. It means something

  410. more limited,

  411. a smaller plot

  412. or piece of land

  413. or earth.

  414. So you see,

  415. Elimelech chooses,

  416. doesn't he,

  417. to leave the land,

  418. the world of God's land

  419. behind.

  420. And he goes to the

  421. little country of Moab,

  422. the big,

  423. wide,

  424. wonderful world

  425. of God's land,

  426. and exchanges it

  427. for little Moab.

  428. He chooses the limited

  429. instead of the unlimited.

  430. You know,

  431. at that point,

  432. he thought leaving the Lord

  433. would be the big move

  434. for the family,

  435. wouldn't it?

  436. Leaving the Lord,

  437. freedom at last,

  438. the country of Moab,

  439. the land of opportunity.

  440. But all it's left

  441. his wife with

  442. is a little corner

  443. to bury him

  444. and his two sons in.

  445. a little tiny piece

  446. of land called Moab

  447. by a graveside.

  448. They find out,

  449. don't they,

  450. that to leave the Lord

  451. is to put your life

  452. in a box.

  453. It is to live

  454. in a little corner.

  455. It is to starve yourself

  456. and to limit yourself

  457. and your family's life.

  458. It is to be

  459. closed-minded

  460. and stunted.

  461. Life becomes

  462. restricted and small

  463. away from the Lord.

  464. the unlimited

  465. for the limited.

  466. C.S. Lewis

  467. puts it really well.

  468. He says,

  469. we are half-hearted creatures

  470. fooling about

  471. with drink,

  472. sex and ambition

  473. when infinite joy

  474. is offered us.

  475. Infinite joy

  476. like an ignorant child

  477. who wants to go on

  478. making mud pies

  479. in a slum

  480. because he can't understand

  481. what is meant

  482. by the offer of a holiday

  483. by the sea.

  484. Great, isn't it?

  485. Naomi knows

  486. that back with the Lord

  487. it smells good.

  488. there is a feast

  489. back there.

  490. So she's determined

  491. to return to the Lord

  492. back to the big

  493. beautiful

  494. plentiful

  495. wide world

  496. of living

  497. with the Lord.

  498. Isn't it funny

  499. how God calls

  500. his people

  501. to what often

  502. looks smaller

  503. and yet

  504. is far far bigger.

  505. So Abraham

  506. he is called

  507. to a tiny piece

  508. of land

  509. isn't he?

  510. The promised land.

  511. Moses is called

  512. into a wilderness

  513. and through a wilderness.

  514. And people today

  515. we are called

  516. into a tiny

  517. looking church

  518. aren't we?

  519. But what looks

  520. smaller

  521. in the world's eyes

  522. is actually

  523. far far bigger

  524. in reality.

  525. because it opens

  526. up all of life

  527. as it's meant

  528. to be lived.

  529. Returning

  530. to the Lord.

  531. Is that how

  532. we think of church?

  533. The big

  534. full

  535. unlimited

  536. wide world

  537. of God's church

  538. God's land.

  539. So

  540. they choose

  541. to return

  542. to the Lord

  543. but what about

  544. the two daughters?

  545. Ruth

  546. and Orpah.

  547. In the time

  548. we've got

  549. we just need

  550. to see

  551. I think

  552. the difference

  553. in the reaction

  554. to Naomi

  555. telling them

  556. that they have

  557. to stay

  558. in Moab

  559. in verse 8.

  560. Just look there.

  561. Verse 8.

  562. Naomi said

  563. to her two

  564. daughters-in-law

  565. go return

  566. each of you

  567. to her mother's

  568. house.

  569. May the Lord

  570. deal kindly

  571. with you

  572. as you've

  573. dealt with

  574. the dead

  575. and with me.

  576. That's an

  577. emotional

  578. moment isn't it?

  579. Both of the

  580. girls cry

  581. about the

  582. prospect

  583. of leaving

  584. Naomi

  585. don't they?

  586. Verse 9.

  587. They kissed

  588. each other

  589. and they lifted

  590. up their voices

  591. and wept.

  592. Verse 14.

  593. They lifted

  594. up their voices

  595. and wept

  596. again.

  597. They've grown

  598. to love

  599. their mother-in-law

  600. Naomi

  601. and they both

  602. weep tears

  603. about this

  604. idea.

  605. They both

  606. refuse to go

  607. back don't

  608. they?

  609. In verse 10

  610. they said to her

  611. no we will

  612. return with you

  613. to your people.

  614. they refused

  615. to go back

  616. but the issue

  617. here is the

  618. desire for

  619. marriage

  620. and for

  621. rest.

  622. Look at

  623. verse 11.

  624. Naomi said

  625. turn back

  626. my daughters

  627. why will

  628. you go

  629. with me?

  630. Have I

  631. yet sons

  632. in my

  633. womb

  634. that they

  635. may become

  636. your husbands?

  637. Turn

  638. back my

  639. daughters

  640. go your

  641. way

  642. for I'm

  643. too old

  644. to have

  645. a husband.

  646. If I

  647. should say

  648. I have

  649. hope

  650. even if

  651. I

  652. should

  653. have

  654. a

  655. husband

  656. this

  657. night

  658. and

  659. should

  660. bear

  661. sons

  662. would

  663. you

  664. therefore

  665. wait

  666. till they

  667. were

  668. grown?

  669. The issue

  670. here is that

  671. the daughters

  672. find husbands.

  673. Now those

  674. words husbands

  675. and daughters

  676. come up again

  677. and again

  678. in those

  679. verses

  680. daughters

  681. six times

  682. husbands

  683. four times.

  684. So in a

  685. sense the

  686. quest of

  687. this book

  688. is to

  689. find Ruth

  690. a husband.

  691. To have

  692. a husband

  693. meant

  694. security

  695. and to

  696. have

  697. children

  698. was to

  699. have

  700. posterity

  701. and

  702. provision

  703. for

  704. older

  705. life.

  706. So there

  707. was a

  708. lot

  709. riding on

  710. this

  711. decision.

  712. To

  713. find a

  714. husband

  715. with

  716. Naomi

  717. seemed

  718. ludicrous.

  719. She was

  720. too old

  721. to have

  722. other

  723. sons

  724. and who

  725. would

  726. marry

  727. two

  728. Moabite

  729. girls?

  730. You

  731. see for

  732. the girls

  733. personal

  734. loyalty

  735. to

  736. Naomi

  737. would

  738. mean

  739. marriage

  740. probably

  741. wouldn't

  742. happen.

  743. And so

  744. at this

  745. point

  746. the girls

  747. split

  748. don't

  749. they

  750. with

  751. Naomi's

  752. final

  753. appeal

  754. to

  755. them

  756. in

  757. verse

  758. 13

  759. to

  760. 14

  761. both

  762. of

  763. them

  764. cry

  765. out

  766. but

  767. only

  768. Ruth

  769. clings

  770. to

  771. Naomi

  772. they

  773. both

  774. cry

  775. but

  776. only

  777. Ruth

  778. clings

  779. look

  780. Naomi

  781. says

  782. verse

  783. 15

  784. your

  785. sister

  786. has

  787. gone

  788. back

  789. to

  790. her

  791. people

  792. and

  793. her

  794. gods

  795. you

  796. should

  797. do

  798. the

  799. same

  800. but

  801. it's

  802. the

  803. determination

  804. to

  805. return

  806. to

  807. the

  808. Lord

  809. do

  810. not

  811. urge

  812. me

  813. to

  814. return

  815. from

  816. following

  817. you

  818. Ruth

  819. says

  820. they

  821. both

  822. cry

  823. but

  824. only

  825. Ruth

  826. clings

  827. verse

  828. 18

  829. she's

  830. determined

  831. Naomi

  832. saw

  833. that she

  834. was

  835. determined

  836. to

  837. go

  838. with

  839. her

  840. so

  841. it's

  842. not

  843. just

  844. the

  845. tears

  846. is

  847. it

  848. the

  849. crying

  850. that

  851. marks

  852. a

  853. determination

  854. to

  855. return

  856. to

  857. the

  858. Lord

  859. crying

  860. tears

  861. of

  862. repentance

  863. but

  864. it's

  865. a

  866. clinging

  867. to

  868. him

  869. to

  870. return

  871. to

  872. him

  873. now

  874. why

  875. is

  876. Ruth

  877. so

  878. different

  879. what

  880. makes

  881. her

  882. go

  883. with

  884. Naomi

  885. at

  886. this

  887. point

  888. in

  889. some

  890. ways

  891. it

  892. is

  893. mysterious

  894. isn't

  895. it

  896. we're

  897. maybe

  898. not

  899. told

  900. all

  901. of

  902. the

  903. thoughts

  904. in

  905. her

  906. mind

  907. but

  908. it's

  909. clear

  910. that

  911. she

  912. has

  913. a

  914. deep

  915. desire

  916. not

  917. to

  918. go

  919. back

  920. to

  921. Moab

  922. she

  923. insists

  924. there

  925. was a

  926. fundamental

  927. objection

  928. in her

  929. soul

  930. of living

  931. in

  932. Moab

  933. somehow

  934. she knew

  935. there was

  936. nothing

  937. in Moab

  938. for her

  939. anymore

  940. she'd been

  941. changed

  942. so she's

  943. determined

  944. and she

  945. decides

  946. when faced

  947. with the

  948. prospect of

  949. losing

  950. everything

  951. humanly

  952. speaking

  953. of perhaps

  954. not marrying

  955. she makes

  956. this call

  957. now I

  958. wonder

  959. whether

  960. there are

  961. people

  962. here

  963. tonight

  964. and

  965. perhaps

  966. you

  967. wouldn't

  968. call

  969. yourself

  970. a

  971. Christian

  972. but

  973. you've

  974. been to

  975. church

  976. a few

  977. times

  978. you've

  979. been

  980. with

  981. Christians

  982. and

  983. you've

  984. heard

  985. the

  986. Bible

  987. preached

  988. and

  989. even

  990. though

  991. you

  992. wouldn't

  993. call

  994. yourself

  995. a

  996. Christian

  997. you

  998. know

  999. something

  1000. is

  1001. happening

  1002. something

  1003. is

  1004. happening

  1005. inside

  1006. when you

  1007. come to

  1008. church

  1009. or when

  1010. you hear

  1011. the

  1012. Bible

  1013. and if

  1014. you

  1015. had

  1016. one

  1017. last

  1018. chance

  1019. and

  1020. were

  1021. faced

  1022. with

  1023. the

  1024. ultimatum

  1025. to

  1026. stay

  1027. or to

  1028. go

  1029. you'd

  1030. say

  1031. like

  1032. Ruth

  1033. well

  1034. I've

  1035. come

  1036. this

  1037. far

  1038. I

  1039. just

  1040. can't

  1041. go

  1042. back

  1043. I

  1044. can't

  1045. go

  1046. back

  1047. to

  1048. my

  1049. old

  1050. life

  1051. without

  1052. the

  1053. Lord

  1054. you see

  1055. before

  1056. she

  1057. realised

  1058. it

  1059. Ruth

  1060. was on

  1061. another

  1062. road

  1063. wasn't

  1064. she

  1065. the

  1066. narrow

  1067. road

  1068. away

  1069. from

  1070. Moab

  1071. and

  1072. returning

  1073. back

  1074. to

  1075. the

  1076. Lord

  1077. and

  1078. faced

  1079. with

  1080. that

  1081. ultimatum

  1082. she

  1083. decides

  1084. she

  1085. is

  1086. determined

  1087. I

  1088. can't

  1089. go

  1090. back

  1091. so I

  1092. must

  1093. go to

  1094. the

  1095. Lord

  1096. it's

  1097. all or

  1098. nothing

  1099. for

  1100. her

  1101. now

  1102. we're

  1103. in a

  1104. shape

  1105. that

  1106. upholds

  1107. God's

  1108. sovereign

  1109. choice

  1110. of his

  1111. people

  1112. aren't

  1113. we

  1114. but we

  1115. also

  1116. know

  1117. that

  1118. God's

  1119. word

  1120. calls

  1121. us

  1122. to

  1123. believe

  1124. and

  1125. to

  1126. act

  1127. upon

  1128. our

  1129. belief

  1130. and

  1131. a

  1132. will

  1133. to

  1134. action

  1135. to

  1136. actually

  1137. decide

  1138. time

  1139. to

  1140. decide

  1141. decide

  1142. to

  1143. leave

  1144. Moab

  1145. and

  1146. to

  1147. return

  1148. to

  1149. the

  1150. Lord

  1151. and

  1152. if

  1153. you're

  1154. wondering

  1155. about

  1156. whether

  1157. to

  1158. start

  1159. on

  1160. that

  1161. road

  1162. back

  1163. to

  1164. the

  1165. Lord

  1166. or

  1167. to

  1168. the

  1169. Lord

  1170. for

  1171. the

  1172. first

  1173. time

  1174. even

  1175. everyone

  1176. around

  1177. us

  1178. here

  1179. this

  1180. evening

  1181. is

  1182. on

  1183. that

  1184. road

  1185. just

  1186. look

  1187. around

  1188. you

  1189. if

  1190. you're

  1191. wondering

  1192. about

  1193. whether

  1194. to

  1195. start

  1196. on

  1197. that

  1198. road

  1199. see

  1200. those

  1201. of us

  1202. who

  1203. have

  1204. got

  1205. to

  1206. that

  1207. fork

  1208. in

  1209. the

  1210. road

  1211. and

  1212. we

  1213. said

  1214. I

  1215. just

  1216. can't

  1217. go

  1218. back

  1219. and

  1220. be

  1221. encouraged

  1222. Ruth

  1223. wants

  1224. everything

  1225. that

  1226. Naomi

  1227. has

  1228. she

  1229. wants

  1230. to

  1231. follow

  1232. her

  1233. doesn't

  1234. she

  1235. verse

  1236. 16

  1237. to

  1238. 18

  1239. where

  1240. you

  1241. go

  1242. I

  1243. will

  1244. go

  1245. I

  1246. will

  1247. lodge

  1248. where

  1249. you

  1250. lodge

  1251. your

  1252. people

  1253. shall

  1254. be

  1255. my

  1256. people

  1257. your

  1258. God

  1259. my

  1260. God

  1261. where

  1262. you

  1263. will

  1264. die

  1265. I

  1266. will

  1267. die

  1268. her

  1269. whole

  1270. destiny

  1271. has

  1272. changed

  1273. her

  1274. living

  1275. and

  1276. her

  1277. dying

  1278. she

  1279. wants

  1280. to be

  1281. with

  1282. the

  1283. people

  1284. and

  1285. serve

  1286. the

  1287. God

  1288. that

  1289. they

  1290. serve

  1291. Ruth

  1292. says

  1293. doesn't

  1294. she

  1295. I

  1296. cannot

  1297. live

  1298. without

  1299. the

  1300. Lord

  1301. take

  1302. everything

  1303. away

  1304. from

  1305. me

  1306. if

  1307. you

  1308. want

  1309. take

  1310. away

  1311. my

  1312. life

  1313. this

  1314. prospect

  1315. of

  1316. marriage

  1317. but

  1318. don't

  1319. take

  1320. Jesus

  1321. away

  1322. from

  1323. me

  1324. she

  1325. doesn't

  1326. know

  1327. what

  1328. the

  1329. future

  1330. will

  1331. hold

  1332. does

  1333. she

  1334. and

  1335. the

  1336. marriage

  1337. could

  1338. be

  1339. down

  1340. the

  1341. drain

  1342. but

  1343. she

  1344. can't

  1345. go

  1346. back

  1347. so

  1348. she

  1349. decides

  1350. she's

  1351. determined

  1352. to

  1353. return

  1354. to

  1355. the

  1356. Lord

  1357. even

  1358. if

  1359. life

  1360. gets

  1361. harder

  1362. I

  1363. can't

  1364. be

  1365. without

  1366. the

  1367. Lord

  1368. one

  1369. writer

  1370. puts

  1371. it

  1372. like

  1373. this

  1374. you'd

  1375. rather

  1376. have

  1377. Jesus

  1378. during

  1379. the

  1380. darkness

  1381. of

  1382. night

  1383. than

  1384. be

  1385. without

  1386. him

  1387. in

  1388. the

  1389. daytime

  1390. you'd

  1391. rather

  1392. have

  1393. Jesus

  1394. during

  1395. the

  1396. darkness

  1397. of

  1398. night

  1399. than

  1400. be

  1401. without

  1402. him

  1403. in

  1404. the

  1405. daytime

  1406. the

  1407. misery

  1408. of

  1409. the

  1410. Lord

  1411. but

  1412. Naomi

  1413. and

  1414. Ruth

  1415. determination

  1416. to

  1417. return

  1418. to

  1419. the

  1420. Lord

  1421. they

  1422. cannot

  1423. do

  1424. without

  1425. him

  1426. but

  1427. thirdly

  1428. as we

  1429. close in

  1430. more

  1431. briefly

  1432. verses

  1433. 19

  1434. to

  1435. 22

  1436. the

  1437. misery

  1438. of

  1439. leaving

  1440. the

  1441. Lord

  1442. determination

  1443. to

  1444. return

  1445. and

  1446. the

  1447. gracious

  1448. scars

  1449. of

  1450. the

  1451. time

  1452. in

  1453. between

  1454. the

  1455. gracious

  1456. scars

  1457. of

  1458. the

  1459. time

  1460. in

  1461. between

  1462. I

  1463. don't

  1464. know if

  1465. you've

  1466. ever

  1467. been

  1468. on

  1469. a

  1470. reunion

  1471. and

  1472. there's

  1473. that

  1474. awkward

  1475. thing

  1476. isn't

  1477. there

  1478. of

  1479. trying

  1480. to

  1481. remember

  1482. people

  1483. you

  1484. once

  1485. knew

  1486. so

  1487. well

  1488. years

  1489. and

  1490. years

  1491. ago

  1492. but

  1493. time

  1494. has

  1495. elapsed

  1496. hasn't

  1497. it

  1498. periods

  1499. in

  1500. life

  1501. go

  1502. by

  1503. people

  1504. and

  1505. faces

  1506. change

  1507. you

  1508. see

  1509. them

  1510. again

  1511. and

  1512. so

  1513. much

  1514. has

  1515. gone

  1516. by

  1517. you've

  1518. forgotten

  1519. them

  1520. what

  1521. their

  1522. names

  1523. are

  1524. they

  1525. seem

  1526. familiar

  1527. but

  1528. you

  1529. don't

  1530. know

  1531. who

  1532. they

  1533. are

  1534. now

  1535. the

  1536. women

  1537. finally

  1538. make

  1539. it

  1540. back

  1541. to

  1542. Bethlehem

  1543. in

  1544. Judah

  1545. don't

  1546. they

  1547. but

  1548. Naomi

  1549. is

  1550. not

  1551. the

  1552. woman

  1553. who

  1554. left

  1555. there

  1556. over

  1557. ten

  1558. years

  1559. ago

  1560. at

  1561. the

  1562. reunion

  1563. the

  1564. people

  1565. of

  1566. Bethlehem

  1567. look

  1568. out

  1569. over

  1570. the

  1571. horizon

  1572. and

  1573. they

  1574. squint

  1575. their

  1576. eyes

  1577. she

  1578. is

  1579. the

  1580. figure

  1581. of

  1582. a

  1583. woman

  1584. who

  1585. seems

  1586. familiar

  1587. but

  1588. is

  1589. only

  1590. a

  1591. shadow

  1592. of

  1593. her

  1594. former

  1595. self

  1596. verse

  1597. 19

  1598. the

  1599. town

  1600. is

  1601. stirred

  1602. as

  1603. they

  1604. return

  1605. and

  1606. the

  1607. women

  1608. ask

  1609. is

  1610. this

  1611. Naomi

  1612. is

  1613. this

  1614. Naomi

  1615. is

  1616. that

  1617. really

  1618. you

  1619. you've

  1620. changed

  1621. you've

  1622. changed

  1623. so much

  1624. but

  1625. it

  1626. isn't

  1627. just

  1628. the

  1629. sands

  1630. of

  1631. time

  1632. here

  1633. isn't

  1634. it

  1635. it

  1636. isn't

  1637. just

  1638. natural

  1639. aging

  1640. but

  1641. it's

  1642. the

  1643. time

  1644. she's

  1645. had

  1646. away

  1647. from

  1648. the

  1649. Lord

  1650. she's

  1651. been

  1652. away

  1653. from

  1654. the

  1655. land

  1656. away

  1657. from

  1658. God's

  1659. covenant

  1660. people

  1661. verse

  1662. 21

  1663. I

  1664. went

  1665. away

  1666. full

  1667. and

  1668. the

  1669. Lord

  1670. has

  1671. brought

  1672. me

  1673. back

  1674. empty

  1675. it's

  1676. the

  1677. scars

  1678. and

  1679. the

  1680. memories

  1681. of

  1682. a

  1683. life

  1684. lived

  1685. in

  1686. Moab

  1687. leaving

  1688. the

  1689. Lord

  1690. in

  1691. fullness

  1692. and

  1693. having

  1694. to

  1695. return

  1696. to

  1697. him

  1698. in

  1699. emptiness

  1700. from

  1701. pleasant

  1702. Naomi

  1703. she

  1704. is

  1705. bitter

  1706. Mara

  1707. isn't

  1708. she

  1709. it's

  1710. a reminder

  1711. to her

  1712. as she

  1713. returns

  1714. of the

  1715. toll

  1716. it takes

  1717. when we

  1718. live our

  1719. lives

  1720. doing what

  1721. is right

  1722. in our

  1723. own eyes

  1724. when we

  1725. live in a

  1726. dark box

  1727. for months

  1728. years

  1729. decades

  1730. even

  1731. being away

  1732. from the

  1733. Lord

  1734. it is not

  1735. freedom

  1736. is it

  1737. and it's

  1738. not fun

  1739. no no

  1740. Mara

  1741. she says

  1742. it's bitter

  1743. it will

  1744. ruin your

  1745. life

  1746. to

  1747. willingly

  1748. willfully

  1749. depart

  1750. from the

  1751. Lord

  1752. and be

  1753. away

  1754. from him

  1755. the

  1756. long

  1757. years

  1758. of life

  1759. doing

  1760. what is

  1761. right

  1762. in my

  1763. own

  1764. eyes

  1765. have a

  1766. heavy

  1767. toll

  1768. she's

  1769. paid

  1770. dearly

  1771. and she

  1772. looks

  1773. tired

  1774. she's

  1775. come back

  1776. empty

  1777. she's

  1778. hardly

  1779. recognisable

  1780. but at

  1781. the same

  1782. time

  1783. Naomi

  1784. knows

  1785. doesn't

  1786. she

  1787. that the

  1788. Lord

  1789. has been

  1790. behind

  1791. it

  1792. to bring

  1793. her back

  1794. to himself

  1795. the Lord

  1796. has done

  1797. this

  1798. and isn't

  1799. it so

  1800. sometimes

  1801. the case

  1802. that the

  1803. Lord

  1804. who will

  1805. fill us

  1806. must first

  1807. empty us

  1808. in his

  1809. providence

  1810. look at

  1811. verse 22

  1812. Naomi

  1813. returned

  1814. and Ruth

  1815. the Moabite

  1816. her daughter

  1817. in law

  1818. with her

  1819. who returned

  1820. from the

  1821. country of

  1822. Moab

  1823. and they

  1824. came to

  1825. Bethlehem

  1826. at the

  1827. beginning

  1828. of the

  1829. harvest

  1830. there is a

  1831. sign

  1832. isn't there

  1833. at the

  1834. end of

  1835. this

  1836. chapter

  1837. of God's

  1838. graciousness

  1839. they've

  1840. returned to

  1841. the Lord

  1842. in bitterness

  1843. and emptiness

  1844. but the

  1845. harvest

  1846. has come

  1847. the harvest

  1848. has come

  1849. and even

  1850. though their

  1851. past

  1852. is full

  1853. of scars

  1854. there is a

  1855. glimpse here

  1856. isn't there

  1857. of future

  1858. hope

  1859. of harvest

  1860. and of

  1861. satisfaction

  1862. for

  1863. Ruth

  1864. and if

  1865. you look

  1866. at verse

  1867. one

  1868. of chapter

  1869. two

  1870. we're

  1871. given

  1872. an even

  1873. greater

  1874. hint

  1875. aren't

  1876. we

  1877. Naomi

  1878. had a

  1879. relative

  1880. of her

  1881. husband

  1882. a worthy

  1883. man

  1884. of the

  1885. clan

  1886. of

  1887. Elimelech

  1888. whose name

  1889. was

  1890. Boaz

  1891. it is

  1892. the man

  1893. who will

  1894. turn these

  1895. women's

  1896. lives

  1897. around

  1898. who will

  1899. redeem

  1900. them

  1901. who will

  1902. fill

  1903. their

  1904. empty

  1905. lives

  1906. we can

  1907. be so

  1908. foolish

  1909. can't

  1910. we

  1911. we can

  1912. leave

  1913. the

  1914. Lord

  1915. at

  1916. times

  1917. and we

  1918. can

  1919. experience

  1920. the

  1921. bitterness

  1922. of that

  1923. limited

  1924. life

  1925. but God

  1926. is gracious

  1927. to his

  1928. people

  1929. to work

  1930. even in

  1931. suffering

  1932. to bring

  1933. you to

  1934. the man

  1935. Jesus

  1936. Christ

  1937. his

  1938. redeemer

  1939. God's

  1940. word

  1941. it tells us

  1942. doesn't it

  1943. to come

  1944. back to

  1945. him

  1946. to come

  1947. back

  1948. to his

  1949. wide

  1950. world

  1951. to come

  1952. back to

  1953. his

  1954. people

  1955. to the

  1956. church

  1957. and to

  1958. his

  1959. redeemer

  1960. the Lord

  1961. Jesus

  1962. not just

  1963. with tears

  1964. not just

  1965. with crying

  1966. but clinging

  1967. to him

  1968. determined

  1969. so tonight

  1970. is it time

  1971. to finally

  1972. decide

  1973. to do

  1974. that

  1975. why not

  1976. do it

  1977. tonight

  1978. to stop

  1979. doing what

  1980. is right

  1981. in your

  1982. own eyes

  1983. are you

  1984. tired of

  1985. living in

  1986. that way

  1987. and come

  1988. back to

  1989. him

  1990. and to

  1991. say

  1992. why should

  1993. I go

  1994. without

  1995. bread

  1996. why should

  1997. I be

  1998. outside of

  1999. his land

  2000. and his

  2001. people

  2002. and his

  2003. blessings

  2004. living in

  2005. a corner

  2006. in Moab

  2007. let's

  2008. pray

  2009. as we

  2010. close

  2011. Thank you.
