  1. You sit down. It would be great if you could get a Bible and turn to Hebrews chapter 2.

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  2. A couple of years ago, around this time of year, quite a mature believer in our old church said to me,

  3. Stuart, I understand that Jesus is God. I get that. I don't really understand what it means for Jesus to be a man.

  4. I don't really relate to that. And I think she was, as I say, she was a mature believer.

  5. I think probably she was speaking for a lot of us. And we're so used to talking about Jesus as God on earth

  6. that we don't really grasp what it means for, if we ever could, for the eternal Son of God to become a man.

  7. So that's what we're going to be looking at over the next couple of Sunday mornings.

  8. We all know the stories of angels and shepherds. What is the significance of all that?

  9. What is the significance of the incarnation of God taking on human flesh?

  10. And so we're going to be looking at Hebrews chapter 2, which probably of all the Bible is a chapter which focuses so much

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  11. on Jesus in the flesh, God becoming a human being.

  12. So this week we're going to look at him as our Jesus, our representative and restorer.

  13. And next week, God willing, we'll see him as our brother, our champion, our priest.

  14. This letter to the Hebrews is written to a bunch of Christians from a Jewish background,

  15. but they were struggling with their faith.

  16. They were considering chucking in the towel and just going back to Judaism and leading this Christianity business.

  17. It's just too much like hard work.

  18. And I suspect if we're honest with ourselves, while we may not come from a Jewish background,

  19. perhaps among us today, there are those of us who wonder, is it really worth it?

  20. Is it really that great with the struggles in the Christian life?

  21. Well, the writer to the Hebrews wants us to see it is that great.

  22. And so he starts by showing us this big picture of who the eternal Son of God is.

  23. Those words we read earlier in chapter 1, verse 2, that he's the one through whom all things were created.

  24. He is the one who angels worship, chapter 1, verse 6.

  25. He's the radiance of the glory of God.

  26. He's so much better than the angels.

  27. That's the whole point of chapter 1.

  28. Then we get to chapter 2.

  29. Look at verse 3 for a moment.

  30. See what he says about this great salvation.

  31. How will we escape if we neglect such a great salvation?

  32. The salvation that Jesus has won for us.

  33. Now what is salvation?

  34. It's a very Christian word, isn't it?

  35. We use it so often and so easily.

  36. If you look it up in a dictionary, it says salvation is an act of saving something from harm or destruction.

  37. But even then, what does that mean?

  38. Let me try to illustrate it like this.

  39. Sometimes we can think about salvation and think it's the same as salvaging something.

  40. But it is not.

  41. You may remember, when was it?

  42. It was a couple of years ago now, three years ago now.

  43. That huge ocean liner, huge cruise liner, the Costa Concordia, right aground and sank off the coast of Italy.

  44. Well, there is now a salvaging operation going on.

  45. What does that mean?

  46. Well, it means that earlier this year, at great expense, they lifted the wreck up from the seashore to the bottom of the sea.

  47. They towed it 200 miles up the coast to Genoa.

  48. Now it's a port in Genoa being salvaged.

  49. Which means essentially it's being destroyed.

  50. They're going to recycle the metal that they can and everything else goes.

  51. That's salvaging.

  52. Just trying to rescue what is still of some use and recycle it.

  53. I mean, salvation for the Costa Concordia would look like going down to the seabed, raising it up, bringing it back into port and then kind of remaking it somehow.

  54. So it could float again.

  55. That would be salvation.

  56. But a great salvation, if you could do it for Costa Concordia, would be to go down, raise it up, turn it into port and then make it renewed completely.

  57. With all the beauty, all the seaworthiness that once it had.

  58. And not only that, a great salvation would be to make it unsinkable.

  59. So it could never be destroyed again.

  60. As we turn to Hebrews 2, we find out that the eternal Son of God has become man.

  61. To work a great salvation.

  62. To take what is broken, to bring it up, make it new so that it is now unbreakable.

  63. And perfect forever.

  64. That's what he has done.

  65. That's what this chapter is about.

  66. Let's look at verse 5 as we start the section that was read to us earlier.

  67. The psalmist is quoting, the writer is quoting from Psalm 8.

  68. So he says this,

  69. Now it's not to angels that God subjected the world to come of which we're speaking.

  70. This great salvation is a world to come.

  71. We don't have it all yet.

  72. It's a world to come.

  73. But what's it like?

  74. Well it's been testified somewhere.

  75. What is man that you are mindful of him?

  76. And so he goes on.

  77. He goes back to use Psalm 8.

  78. Written about what the world was like originally.

  79. To show us how Jesus fulfills it.

  80. So what we're going to do now is look at what Psalm 8 originally meant.

  81. See how the writer uses it to show how Jesus fulfills it.

  82. And then more briefly ask the question,

  83. So what difference does it make for us?

  84. What difference does it make for us?

  85. So that's where we're going.

  86. And the first point is going to, or the second point is going to take more or less forever.

  87. Just warn you that now if you're taking notes.

  88. So, Psalm 8.

  89. What is Psalm 8 all about?

  90. Oh Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth.

  91. That's how it begins.

  92. And then rejoices in God's care and attention for mankind.

  93. And really it's a poem, a song, rejoicing in all that God had done in Genesis chapter 1.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  94. Where he makes men and women in his own image.

  95. Crowned with glory and honour as God's image bearers in the world.

  96. Set to be rulers over God's world.

  97. That's the crowning with honour as well.

  98. So God said, Genesis 1.26,

  99. Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.

  100. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and the birds of the heavens and over the livestock.

  101. And over all the earth.

  102. That's what the Psalm is celebrating.

  103. What is man?

  104. What are we little creatures?

  105. That God should love us so much and give us such responsibility.

  106. So it celebrates the dignity God gave us and the responsibility he gave us.

  107. Crowned with, you're made in lower than the angels, but crowned with glory and honour.

  108. Verse 7.

  109. But as we look around at the world today, we see, don't we, it's not the same as it was in Genesis chapter 1.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  110. Yes, we're still made in God's image.

  111. But the world is not perfectly under our rule anymore.

  112. Just over this weekend, they've been fixing new climate change agreements in Lima, haven't they?

  113. Worried about what man is doing to the environment around us.

  114. We see in the news, mudslides in Indonesia are killing people.

  115. We know we live in a world that is no longer perfectly under human rule.

  116. But in a creation that is now often hostile to human existence.

  117. Why is that?

  118. Well, in a nutshell, it's because the first man wanted to be God.

  119. The first man wanted to be God.

  120. So if you read on through the story of Genesis, in chapter 3, we read men and women rebelling against God.

  121. God had put some trees in the garden.

  122. He said you can eat the fruit from all these trees, but not this one tree.

  123. The tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

  124. And Satan crept into the garden, disguised as a snake,

  125. and said, Genesis 3, verse 4,

    Genesis 3:4

  126. He said to the woman,

  127. You will not surely die.

  128. God said you'll die if this happens, but you will not surely die.

  129. God knows that when you eat of it,

  130. your eyes will be opened,

  131. and you will be like God,

  132. knowing good and evil.

  133. See the temptation?

  134. You see the attraction?

  135. They wanted to be like God.

  136. They weren't content with being made in God's image.

  137. They wanted to be God themselves,

  138. defining good and evil for themselves.

  139. That's the human story, isn't it?

  140. Every one of us wants to be God, naturally.

  141. He wants to be in control of our own lives,

  142. our own destinies.

  143. And the result?

  144. The result was disaster.

  145. Death enters in the world,

  146. the beautiful creation unravels,

  147. and the world becomes hostile to us.

  148. Just as when a nation suffers in unjust, bad government,

  149. so society falls apart.

  150. Look at Syria.

  151. Look at Iraq.

  152. So the world,

  153. being no longer ruled by

  154. beings doing what God wanted,

  155. but by being ruled by those who turned away from God,

  156. the creation unravels,

  157. suffers the consequences of bad human leadership.

  158. So the world is broken,

  159. in a sense.

  160. Now what do you do when something breaks,

  161. when something you own breaks?

  162. You can either

  163. just chuck it out,

  164. forget it.

  165. Or you can make do.

  166. The lock on our back door is not working right now,

  167. it's actually locked shut.

  168. Which is quite good,

  169. because no one else can get in,

  170. but it means we can't get out.

  171. But you know what?

  172. It's wet and horrible outside,

  173. so we don't really care right now,

  174. so we'll just make do.

  175. We won't worry about it.

  176. So you make do,

  177. you can just throw things away,

  178. or you can decide to fix it.

  179. And our great God,

  180. in his mercy,

  181. in his commitment to the world he made,

  182. has decided not just to make do with our rebellion,

  183. not just to bid us all like we deserve,

  184. but to come and fix what we broke.

  185. As one writer put it,

  186. God does not make junk,

  187. and he does not junk what he has made.

  188. He is committed to his world,

  189. committed to his people.

  190. So he's chose to fix the problem,

  191. from the inside as it were.

  192. The problem began,

  193. with a man wanting to be God.

  194. The problem is solved,

  195. by God becoming man.

  196. Coming down,

  197. to fix what we broke.

  198. And so that's how the psalmist now,

  199. the writer of the Hebrews rather,

  200. uses Psalm 8.

  201. He says,

  202. we don't see this perfect world God made,

  203. but we do see what God has done,

  204. in Jesus.

  205. So let's have a look now,

  206. secondly,

  207. at how he applies,

  208. this psalm to Jesus.

  209. Look at verse 7 for a moment.

  210. In a sense,

  211. he breaks down Jesus' life and ministry,

  212. into three parts.

  213. Verse 7,

  214. humiliation to begin with.

  215. You made him for a little while,

  216. lower than the angels.

  217. Secondly,

  218. exaltation.

  219. You crowned him with glory and honour.

  220. And finally,

  221. putting everything in subjection,

  222. under his feet.

  223. The final triumph.

  224. Humiliation,

  225. exaltation,

  226. then the final triumph,

  227. when we see his exaltation.

  228. So we're going to run through,

  229. those three stages.

  230. Of the incarnation,

  231. of Jesus,

  232. the son of God,

  233. becoming flesh.

  234. He unpacks those a bit more,

  235. in verse 9.

  236. Look at what he says,

  237. in verse 9.

  238. We do not see the world,

  239. in subjection,

  240. to human beings,

  241. or to Jesus,

  242. right now.

  243. Verse 8.

  244. But,

  245. we see him,

  246. who for a little while,

  247. was made lower than the angels.

  248. Namely,

  249. Jesus,

  250. crowned with glory and honour.

  251. This is the first time,

  252. in the book,

  253. the writers use,

  254. the name Jesus.

  255. He's told us about,

  256. the eternal son of God,

  257. made in God's image,

  258. the glory of God,

  259. the exact imprint,

  260. of his being,

  261. of him being worshipped,

  262. by the angels,

  263. being greater than the angels.

  264. And now he uses,

  265. his human name,

  266. Jesus.

  267. This eternal God,

  268. in his humility,

  269. becoming lower than the angels,

  270. to be worshipped by him.

  271. Those who were worshipped,

  272. by the angels,

  273. now coming,

  274. to take care of the earth.

  275. Coming to do,

  276. Adam and Eve's job,

  277. the one who upholds,

  278. the universe,

  279. by the word of his power.

  280. Verse 2.

  281. Now coming,

  282. to live as a man,

  283. among us.

  284. A couple of years ago,

  285. Prince William spent,

  286. I think a night,

  287. out on the streets,

  288. living as a homeless person,

  289. identifying with them,

  290. to highlight their need.

  291. That was a,

  292. wonderful thing for him to do.

  293. He didn't need to do it.

  294. Great thing.

  295. But the eternal son of God,

  296. didn't just identify with us,

  297. for a night.

  298. But after that moment,

  299. in Bethlehem,

  300. where he was born as a baby,

  301. for all eternity,

  302. he bears human flesh,

  303. now renewed human flesh,

  304. on the throne of heaven,

  305. as the resurrected one.

  306. But that journey,

  307. that started in Bethlehem,

  308. continues forever.

  309. He so strongly,

  310. identifies with us.

  311. And he comes to do,

  312. what Adam failed to do.

  313. He comes to make amends,

  314. to sort out the damage,

  315. that was done by the first man.

  316. And to see that,

  317. a bit more clearly,

  318. I want us to go back for a moment,

  319. so I don't leap around a bit,

  320. to Luke chapter 3 and 4.

    Luke 3 chapter mention

  321. So if you can turn back to page 859,

  322. if you're using one of those

  323. black church Bibles,

  324. to Luke chapter 3.

    Luke 3 chapter mention

  325. I want us to see how Luke,

  326. also,

  327. as well as the writer of the Hebrews,

  328. presents Jesus,

  329. as the man who's come to do,

  330. what Adam didn't do.

  331. So Luke chapter 3.

    Luke 3 chapter mention

  332. The context here,

  333. we want to see Jesus has been born,

  334. he's been baptised,

  335. the voice has come from heaven,

  336. saying this is my beloved son,

  337. with you I am well pleased.

  338. And Luke 3 verse 23,

    Luke 3:23

  339. we begin with Jesus,

  340. when he began his ministry,

  341. was about 30 years of age,

  342. being the son,

  343. as we suppose,

  344. of Joseph,

  345. the son of Heli.

  346. And then we get a genealogy.

  347. And what do most of us do

  348. when we hit a genealogy in the Bible?

  349. Glaze over and flip over it

  350. as quickly as possible.

  351. That's right, isn't it?

  352. That's what we do.

  353. But look careful,

  354. well don't look too carefully

  355. at this one,

  356. because you look down,

  357. you see Luke does something

  358. that Matthew doesn't do,

  359. he traces Jesus all the way back,

  360. yes,

  361. through David,

  362. verse 31,

  363. through Jacob,

  364. verse 34,

  365. and Abraham,

  366. verse 34,

  367. and he keeps going back,

  368. he goes back to Noah even,

  369. verse 36.

  370. And verse 37,

  371. to the Methuselah,

  372. who's lived for a long time,

  373. back in Genesis 5.

  374. And look where he takes it back to you,

  375. verse 38.

  376. The son of Enos,

  377. the son of Seth,

  378. the son of Adam,

  379. the son of God.

  380. There's a contrast between

  381. two sons of God,

  382. isn't there?

  383. The son announced at the baptism,

  384. my beloved son.

  385. And the first one made in God's image,

  386. made in God's likeness,

  387. who in a sense was God's son

  388. in his likeness,

  389. Adam.

  390. But what did Adam do?

  391. In the garden,

  392. he fell into temptation

  393. and disobeyed.

  394. What does Jesus do?

  395. Where does Jesus go next?

  396. What does it say at the top of chapter 4?

  397. What's the headline there?

  398. The temptation of Jesus.

  399. As Adam was tempted in a garden,

  400. as Israel was tempted

  401. in the wilderness and failed,

  402. now we get Jesus,

  403. tempted in the wilderness.

  404. And what happens to him?

  405. Chapter 4, verse 1.

  406. Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit,

  407. returned from the Jordan

  408. and was led by the Spirit

  409. into the wilderness

  410. for forty days,

  411. being tempted by the devil.

  412. And he ate nothing

  413. during those days,

  414. and when they were over,

  415. he was hungry.

  416. See, Luke wants us

  417. to see the contrast.

  418. What Israel had failed to do,

  419. what Adam had failed to do,

  420. what now the Son of God,

  421. the eternal Son

  422. in human flesh,

  423. comes to do.

  424. We're going to look

  425. very briefly

  426. at these temptations

  427. and want us to see,

  428. as Luke wants us to see,

  429. the humanity of Jesus,

  430. but also the victory of Jesus

  431. in Adam's place.

  432. So first of all,

  433. he resists the temptation

  434. to use divine power

  435. for his own ease.

  436. Do you see that?

  437. Verse 3.

  438. The devil came to him

  439. and said,

  440. if you are the Son of God,

  441. command this stone

  442. to become bread.

  443. Of course,

  444. we see Jesus' humanity here.

  445. God cannot be tempted.

  446. James chapter 1,

    James 1:13

  447. verse 13.

  448. We also see his humanity

  449. in the days,

  450. hungry,

  451. like we get hungry.

  452. Like some of you,

  453. by the time I finish this morning,

  454. will probably be hungry,

  455. and at least want your tea

  456. and biscuits

  457. at the end of the servants.

  458. Well, Jesus was hungry.

  459. But you see his humanity,

  460. he restricts himself.

  461. He doesn't use his divine power

  462. to make bread for himself

  463. and make life easy.

  464. Rather,

  465. as the one

  466. who's made lower

  467. than the angels,

  468. he submits to his Father's will,

  469. submits to the restrictions

  470. of just being a human being.

  471. For the second temptation,

  472. verse 5,

  473. the devil took him

  474. and showed him

  475. all the kingdoms of the world

  476. in a moment in time

  477. and said to him,

  478. to you I will give

  479. all this authority

  480. and their glory

  481. for it has been delivered to me

  482. and I will give it

  483. to whom I will.

  484. But what human

  485. and what man particularly

  486. is not tempted

  487. by power

  488. and prestige

  489. and honour.

  490. And yet the man Jesus

  491. resists that temptation.

  492. He's not going to take

  493. the shortcut

  494. of fatal worship

  495. to the devil

  496. but the long way

  497. of costly obedience

  498. to the Father

  499. so that he can get

  500. the honour

  501. and glory

  502. of the nations.

  503. And look at the third temptation,

  504. the temptation

  505. to test God.

  506. Verse 9,

  507. the devil took Jesus

  508. to Jerusalem

  509. and set him

  510. on the pinnacle

  511. of the temple

  512. and said to him,

  513. if you are the son of God

  514. throw yourself down

  515. from there

  516. for it is written

  517. he will command

  518. his angels

  519. concerning you.

  520. What was the temptation?

  521. The temptation

  522. to put God

  523. to the test.

  524. It's never okay

  525. for human beings

  526. to put God

  527. to the test.

  528. If you look through

  529. the Bible

  530. you find it's a good thing

  531. when God puts humans

  532. to the test

  533. as you put Abraham

  534. to the test

  535. it resulted

  536. in Abraham

  537. being blessed.

  538. But it's never good

  539. for us

  540. for mere men

  541. to test God

  542. to test whether

  543. he is true

  544. to his word.

  545. It's not even okay

  546. for the incarnate

  547. son of God

  548. to test his father.

  549. See in his human nature

  550. Jesus had to learn

  551. to trust his father

  552. just as you and I

  553. are men and women

  554. boys and girls

  555. need to learn

  556. to trust

  557. the living God

  558. who makes great promises

  559. to us.

  560. So you see

  561. Jesus' humanity

  562. in these temptations

  563. but you notice

  564. also the victory.

  565. He does not give in.

  566. He does not give in.

  567. And there's a bit

  568. of a parallel

  569. with the way

  570. Adam was tempted

  571. in the garden

  572. isn't there?

  573. The first temptation

  574. is to do with food.

  575. Well Adam succumbed

  576. when he and his wife

  577. saw fruit

  578. that was pleasing

  579. to the eye

  580. and good to eat.

  581. The second temptation

  582. was for God

  583. like authority.

  584. What did the serpent

  585. say to Adam

  586. and Eve in the garden?

  587. Eat this

  588. you'll become like God.

  589. What did Satan

  590. say to Jesus?

  591. Worship me

  592. and I'll give you

  593. all the kingdoms

  594. of the earth.

  595. You can be like God.

  596. Again Jesus

  597. resists

  598. claiming that

  599. for himself.

  600. And also

  601. the temptation

  602. to put God

  603. to the test.

  604. Satan's first

  605. words to Eve

  606. did God

  607. really say?

  608. Did God

  609. really say

  610. you died?

  611. Is that what

  612. God really said?

  613. You test him

  614. to see if that's true.

  615. Yet Jesus

  616. does not put God

  617. to the test.

  618. He will not

  619. throw himself

  620. off the temple

  621. to see if the angels

  622. catch him.

  623. The very points

  624. at which Adam

  625. failed

  626. the new Adam

  627. Jesus

  628. our new representative

  629. the son of God

  630. succeeds.

  631. And what did he have

  632. to resist

  633. Satan's temptations

  634. with?

  635. What does verse 1

  636. tell us?

  637. Chapter 4

  638. he was filled

  639. with the Holy Spirit

  640. and how did he

  641. meet each temptation?

  642. He quoted

  643. the word of God

  644. back at Satan.

  645. See he resisted

  646. with the resources

  647. that we have.

  648. He resisted

  649. as a man

  650. in his human nature

  651. filled with the spirit

  652. armed with the word

  653. of God

  654. what every believer

  655. has as we battle

  656. temptation today.

  657. Well this is the

  658. first part of this

  659. humiliation

  660. that he was

  661. made lower than

  662. the angels

  663. made a human being

  664. subject to all

  665. our temptations

  666. and difficulties.

  667. If you want to

  668. turn back to Hebrews

  669. or get on with

  670. that passage

  671. back to page 1002

  672. if you're a church

  673. Bible

  674. Hebrews chapter 2

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  675. So he was made

  676. a little lower

  677. than the angels

  678. and then we see

  679. his ultimate

  680. humiliation there

  681. if you look down

  682. to verse 9

  683. we see him

  684. who for a little

  685. while was made

  686. lower than the angels

  687. namely Jesus

  688. crowned with glory

  689. and honour

  690. why?

  691. Because of the

  692. suffering of death

  693. so that by the

  694. grace of God

  695. he might taste

  696. death for everyone

  697. death

  698. he took on flesh

  699. so that he could

  700. die

  701. he tasted death

  702. for all of us

  703. not just a sip of

  704. the cup

  705. but he drank it

  706. to the dregs

  707. so that we do not

  708. need to drink it

  709. death is not natural

  710. in God's world

  711. death is an enemy

  712. an intruder

  713. that's how the Bible

  714. tells us

  715. death came as a result

  716. of Adam and Eve's

  717. rebellion

  718. the sin of the

  719. first man brought

  720. death into the

  721. world

  722. but this sinless

  723. man comes

  724. who does not

  725. give in to

  726. temptation

  727. who does not

  728. deserve death

  729. but drinks the

  730. cup of death

  731. for us

  732. so there can be

  733. new life

  734. and why?

  735. verse 9

  736. is by the grace

  737. of God

  738. through Adam

  739. death came into

  740. the world

  741. through Jesus

  742. the sinless one

  743. who drinks death

  744. death can be

  745. done away with

  746. he dies as our

  747. representative

  748. so that we can

  749. have life

  750. see this is the

  751. great salvation

  752. this is the great

  753. salvation

  754. all the consequences

  755. of sin

  756. being taken by

  757. the sinless one

  758. who lived the

  759. sinless life

  760. so this salvation

  761. could come

  762. all that's been

  763. the humiliation

  764. but don't worry

  765. we're getting on to

  766. exaltation now

  767. verse 7b

  768. actually look back

  769. to verse 9

  770. the fuller account

  771. he'd been

  772. crowned with

  773. glory and

  774. honour

  775. because of

  776. the suffering

  777. of death

  778. our first

  779. parents

  780. Adam and Eve

  781. were in a sense

  782. crowned with

  783. glory and honour

  784. being made in

  785. God's image

  786. being made to

  787. rule his world

  788. but that was

  789. marred by their

  790. sin by their

  791. rebellion

  792. still human

  793. beings are still

  794. in God's image

  795. still have great

  796. dignity

  797. we don't have

  798. all the honour

  799. we had

  800. but now Jesus

  801. comes into the

  802. world

  803. and he is the

  804. only

  805. he's only the

  806. second man

  807. created

  808. in perfect

  809. fellowship with

  810. God as God

  811. intended

  812. created without

  813. sin

  814. the man

  815. Christ

  816. Jesus

  817. and yet he

  818. takes death

  819. for us

  820. he's raised

  821. to new life

  822. with glory

  823. and honour

  824. to restore

  825. the blessings

  826. that Adam

  827. and Eve

  828. lost

  829. to restore

  830. the dignity

  831. and the

  832. hope

  833. that was lost

  834. through their

  835. sin

  836. but how do we

  837. know he's

  838. exalted in

  839. glory and honour

  840. now

  841. how do we

  842. know that

  843. we know it

  844. because the

  845. tomb is empty

  846. don't we

  847. we know it

  848. because of

  849. the resurrection

  850. we cannot

  851. we cannot

  852. just speak about

  853. Christmas

  854. we have to

  855. speak about

  856. Easter as

  857. well

  858. don't we

  859. because that

  860. tomb is empty

  861. he's raised

  862. to new life

  863. he's now

  864. reigning

  865. in glory

  866. and honour

  867. at God's

  868. right hand

  869. the apostle

  870. Paul puts

  871. the contrast

  872. between Jesus

  873. and Adam

  874. like this

  875. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 15:21

  876. 15 verse

  877. 21

  878. for as by

  879. a man

  880. came death

  881. by a man

  882. has come

  883. also the

  884. resurrection

  885. from the

  886. dead

  887. for as in

  888. Adam all

  889. die

  890. so in

  891. Christ

  892. all should

  893. be made

  894. alive

  895. so in

  896. the end

  897. there are

  898. two types

  899. of human

  900. beings

  901. there are

  902. those who

  903. are on

  904. Adam's

  905. team

  906. and those

  907. who are

  908. on

  909. Jesus

  910. team

  911. those who

  912. are still

  913. on Adam's

  914. team

  915. the team

  916. we're

  917. naturally

  918. born

  919. onto

  920. will

  921. inherit

  922. the death

  923. that comes

  924. through

  925. him

  926. those who

  927. by grace

  928. through

  929. faith

  930. are on

  931. Jesus

  932. team

  933. he is

  934. our

  935. captain

  936. we will

  937. go his

  938. way

  939. inheriting

  940. life

  941. so that's

  942. the exaltation

  943. the leadership

  944. and the rule

  945. that human

  946. beings are

  947. supposed to

  948. exercise

  949. is now

  950. entirely

  951. with Jesus

  952. who rules

  953. on our

  954. behalf

  955. who rules

  956. as our

  957. king

  958. but we

  959. don't see

  960. that rule

  961. completely

  962. manifest

  963. yet

  964. do we

  965. we still

  966. see sin

  967. and pain

  968. and death

  969. in the

  970. world

  971. we still

  972. see many

  973. people who

  974. will not

  975. bow to

  976. king

  977. Jesus

  978. who will

  979. entrust

  980. themselves

  981. to his

  982. gracious

  983. rule

  984. the kingdom

  985. has not

  986. yet fully

  987. come

  988. so after

  989. the exaltation

  990. sorry after

  991. the humiliation

  992. that has

  993. happened

  994. the exaltation

  995. which is now

  996. the present

  997. experience

  998. that Jesus

  999. is raised

  1000. Jesus is

  1001. reigning

  1002. there's still

  1003. one final

  1004. stage

  1005. his return

  1006. in triumph

  1007. and that's

  1008. what's described

  1009. in verse

  1010. verse 8

  1011. first line

  1012. of verse 8

  1013. putting

  1014. everything

  1015. in subjection

  1016. under his

  1017. feet

  1018. you know

  1019. in psalm 8

  1020. it was only

  1021. the living

  1022. beasts

  1023. the cattle

  1024. the fish

  1025. of the sea

  1026. the birds

  1027. of the air

  1028. that were

  1029. under the

  1030. rule of

  1031. Adam and

  1032. Eve

  1033. but the

  1034. writer of the

  1035. Hebrews

  1036. sees that

  1037. for everything

  1038. to be restored

  1039. absolutely

  1040. everything

  1041. will be put

  1042. under the

  1043. feet of

  1044. the Lord

  1045. Jesus

  1046. Christ

  1047. so he

  1048. goes on

  1049. verse 8

  1050. now in

  1051. putting

  1052. everything

  1053. in subjection

  1054. to him

  1055. he left

  1056. nothing

  1057. outside his

  1058. control

  1059. at present

  1060. we do not

  1061. yet see

  1062. everything

  1063. in subjection

  1064. to him

  1065. but one

  1066. day we

  1067. will

  1068. one day

  1069. the man

  1070. who is on

  1071. the throne

  1072. of heaven

  1073. will come

  1074. back

  1075. as judge

  1076. of all

  1077. and everything

  1078. will be put

  1079. right

  1080. the kingdom

  1081. will fully

  1082. come

  1083. all who have

  1084. turned from

  1085. living for

  1086. themselves

  1087. to seek

  1088. his forgiveness

  1089. to seek

  1090. life

  1091. will be

  1092. forgiven

  1093. will be

  1094. forgiven

  1095. will enjoy

  1096. the glory

  1097. and honour

  1098. that Jesus

  1099. now has

  1100. his humiliation

  1101. his past

  1102. his exaltation

  1103. his present

  1104. the final victory

  1105. is still to come

  1106. that's how

  1107. psalm 8

  1108. meant originally

  1109. that's how

  1110. psalm 8

  1111. is fulfilled

  1112. by Jesus

  1113. the new

  1114. Adam

  1115. the new

  1116. representative

  1117. of the new

  1118. race

  1119. final question

  1120. so what does

  1121. the incarnation

  1122. mean for us

  1123. what does this

  1124. matter

  1125. why should we

  1126. celebrate Christmas

  1127. not just the way

  1128. the rest of the

  1129. culture does

1130. well let me put it

  1131. like this first

  1132. if the second

  1133. person of the

  1134. trinity

  1135. if the eternal

  1136. son of God

  1137. had not become

  1138. a human being

  1139. what would we

  1140. still have

  1141. well we'd still

  1142. have a creation

  1143. that is imperfect

  1144. for us

  1145. with death

  1146. disease

  1147. disasters

  1148. we'd still have

  1149. to pay for

  1150. our own sin

  1151. because no

  1152. other man

  1153. would have

  1154. taken our

  1155. place

  1156. we'd still

  1157. face death

  1158. and judgment

  1159. we would

  1160. still not

  1161. have any

  1162. hope

  1163. but that is

  1164. not the

  1165. state we're

  1166. in

  1167. is it

  1168. because actually

  1169. the eternal

  1170. son of God

  1171. has come

  1172. has lived

  1173. as a human

  1174. being

  1175. on this

  1176. earth

  1177. lives now

  1178. as an

  1179. exalted

  1180. human being

  1181. in heaven

  1182. so what

  1183. difference does

  1184. that make

  1185. well let me

1186. try and sum it up

  1187. very briefly

  1188. in about two

  1189. minutes

  1190. say three

  1191. things

  1192. to think

  1193. about afterwards

  1194. and talk

  1195. about over

  1196. lunch

  1197. this

  1198. Jesus

  1199. ministry

  1200. as a

  1201. real man

  1202. gives us

  1203. a pattern

  1204. to follow

  1205. a hope

  1206. to cling

  1207. on to

  1208. and a reason

  1209. to worship

  1210. a pattern

  1211. to follow

  1212. a hope

  1213. to cling

  1214. on to

  1215. and a reason

  1216. to worship

  1217. so a pattern

  1218. to follow

  1219. what was the

  1220. pattern of

  1221. Jesus'

  1222. life

  1223. humiliation

  1224. and then

  1225. exaltation

  1226. he went down

  1227. and then was

  1228. raised up

  1229. most people

  1230. around us

  1231. have this

  1232. faith that

  1233. life will just

  1234. keep on getting

  1235. better

  1236. don't they

  1237. that is

  1238. as one

  1239. political scientist

  1240. put it

  1241. the faith

  1242. of practical

  1243. men and women

  1244. who believe

  1245. they have no

  1246. religion

  1247. I love that line

  1248. practical men and women

  1249. who believe

  1250. they have no

  1251. religion

  1252. have this faith

  1253. that life will just

  1254. keep getting better

  1255. that's why there's

  1256. astonishment

  1257. in the last couple

  1258. of weeks

  1259. that government

  1260. levels of

  1261. public services

  1262. might go back

  1263. to 1930s levels

  1264. of investments

  1265. now forget any

  1266. political points

  1267. about that

  1268. what's the outcry

  1269. it looks like

  1270. life isn't going

  1271. to keep on

  1272. getting better

  1273. that challenges

  1274. the deeply

  1275. held faith

  1276. of every

  1277. natural

  1278. western

  1279. human being

  1280. but what does

  1281. a Christian

  1282. know

  1283. a Christian

  1284. know that

  1285. that is not

  1286. the pattern

  1287. of life

  1288. the pattern

  1289. of life

  1290. is not

  1291. that it keeps

  1292. getting steadily

  1293. better

  1294. but that there

  1295. is humiliation

  1296. followed by

  1297. exaltation

  1298. we serve now

  1299. glory comes

  1300. later

  1301. we suffer now

  1302. glory comes

  1303. later

  1304. because that's

  1305. what Jesus

  1306. did

  1307. he gives us

  1308. a pattern

  1309. to follow

  1310. secondly

  1311. he gives us

  1312. a hope

  1313. to cling

  1314. to

  1315. we have

  1316. a hope

  1317. in the

  1318. present

  1319. don't we

  1320. as Jesus

  1321. went into

  1322. the wilderness

  1323. and had to

  1324. do battle

  1325. with the devil

  1326. who tempted

  1327. him

  1328. what resources

  1329. did he have

  1330. he was filled

  1331. with the spirit

  1332. and he had

  1333. the word of

  1334. God

  1335. we have

  1336. those resources

  1337. too by

  1338. God's grace

  1339. more or less

  1340. in coming weeks

  1341. as we look at

  1342. Jesus as our

  1343. priest

  1344. we have the

  1345. same resources

  1346. to deal

  1347. with the

  1348. temptations

  1349. we face

  1350. so we have

  1351. hope in the

  1352. present

  1353. we also have

  1354. hope for the

  1355. future

  1356. we have this

  1357. great salvation

  1358. the creation

  1359. that was

  1360. wrecked and

  1361. ruined

  1362. has been

  1363. brought up

  1364. by the

  1365. Lord Jesus

  1366. been made

  1367. new

  1368. been made

  1369. so that we'll

  1370. never be

  1371. subject to

  1372. failure again

  1373. a real world

  1374. that is the

  1375. Christian hope

  1376. not merely

  1377. heaven

  1378. heaven is good

  1379. heaven is what

  1380. we get when

  1381. we die

  1382. but there is

  1383. something even

  1384. better beyond

  1385. it

  1386. the new

  1387. creation

  1388. when heaven

  1389. comes back

  1390. down to

  1391. earth

  1392. when Jesus

  1393. comes to

  1394. reign

  1395. and everything

  1396. sad becomes

  1397. untrue

  1398. to steal a line

  1399. from Tolkien

  1400. for a moment

  1401. the Christian

  1402. hope is of

  1403. a real

  1404. physical life

  1405. in a real

  1406. physical world

  1407. no longer

  1408. scarred by

  1409. sin and

  1410. selfishness

  1411. and death

  1412. and disease

  1413. we don't have

  1414. the hope of

  1415. a Buddhist

  1416. nirvana

  1417. we have something

  1418. much better

  1419. something solid

  1420. something real

  1421. so we have a

  1422. pattern to follow

  1423. a hope to cling

  1424. to in the present

  1425. and for the future

  1426. and finally a reason

  1427. to worship

  1428. the triune God

  1429. has not given up

  1430. on us

  1431. that's the message

  1432. of the incarnation

  1433. isn't it

  1434. we broke his

  1435. world

  1436. he hasn't

  1437. binned it

  1438. he hasn't

  1439. ignored it

  1440. he's worked

  1441. to restore it

  1442. God does not

  1443. make junk

  1444. and he does not

  1445. junk what he has

  1446. made

  1447. he's so committed

  1448. to his creation

  1449. that the eternal

  1450. son of God

  1451. became a part

  1452. of that creation

  1453. came down

  1454. to lift us up

  1455. to the heights

  1456. God had planned

  1457. for us

  1458. the first Adam

  1459. wanted to be God

  1460. so he messed up

  1461. the world

  1462. the second Adam

  1463. the son of God

  1464. became man

  1465. to fix what Adam

  1466. broke

  1467. so because

  1468. God the son

  1469. became

  1470. and he

  1471. became a man

  1472. as our representative

  1473. and restorer

  1474. and tasted

  1475. death for us

  1476. we must trust

  1477. in him

  1478. for hope

  1479. in the present

  1480. for a pattern

  1481. to follow

  1482. for hope

  1483. for the future

  1484. we can trust

  1485. him

  1486. because he lived

  1487. with us

  1488. and lived for us

  1489. let's pray

  1490. a man

  1491. a man

  1492. a man

  1493. a man

  1494. a man

  1495. a man

  1496. a man

  1497. a man

  1498. a man

  1499. a man

  1500. a man
