  1. Great if you could open up your Bibles to Hebrews chapter 2, page 1002 if you're using one of those black church Bibles.

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  2. I wonder what Christmas means to you.

  3. I mean for many of us it means a time of busyness, a time of spending money, a time of remembering the last things we haven't done, a time of wishing we could get some rest when we can't.

  4. And yet actually underneath all that there is something very very big going on isn't there?

  5. We're not celebrating as the world celebrates, we're celebrating something deeper, something bigger than we could ever imagine.

  6. There's a great line in the last battle, the last of the Narnia Chronicles, where Lisi the Valiant says that once on our earth a stable held something bigger than the whole world.

  7. That's true isn't it?

  8. And yet we can be so occupied with children's nativities and stables and donkeys and all that stuff, not to mind presents and turkeys,

  9. that we actually forget what the incarnation is all about, what the Son of God taking on human flesh, what God contracted to a span, incomprehensibly made man, means for us.

  10. That's why these two weeks we've been looking at Hebrews chapter 2, last week, and picking up again in verse 10 this week.

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  11. And these verses we get three pictures of what the Lord Jesus was able to do for us, what the Son of God incarnate in flesh was able to do for us.

  12. Three pictures of his work on our behalf.

  13. We're going to look at them briefly this morning.

  14. He is the champion who rescues us, verse 10 and verses 14 to 16.

  15. He is the brother who identifies with us, verses 11 to 13.

  16. And he's the priest who represents us, verses 17 to 18.

  17. So we can look at those briefly.

  18. We see the idea of Jesus being our champion there in verse 10.

  19. The word used actually is founder.

  20. We'll see that in a second.

  21. Verse 10.

  22. It was fitting that he, that is God, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering.

  23. That word founder is translated in many different ways in English versions of the Bible.

  24. It can mean author.

  25. It can mean founder, like the one who establishes a city or a school.

  26. Leader.

  27. Let's use that way in Acts chapter 5, 31.

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  28. Or pioneer.

  29. Or captain.

  30. But as we read through what Jesus does as our founder, we see he's really our champion.

  31. The one who fights for us.

  32. The one who swings into action to rescue us.

  33. He does it in two ways.

  34. He leads us to glory.

  35. And he liberates us from slavery.

  36. He leads us to glory.

  37. That's actually what the writer has been talking about in the previous verses.

  38. He talks about Jesus as the one who the father uses to bring many sons to glory.

  39. First 10.

  40. So Jesus is the one who leads us there.

  41. Like the pioneer who establishes a way.

  42. He goes first so that others can join him.

  43. And where's he leading us to?

  44. It's to the restored humanity.

  45. It's been described in verses 5 to 9.

  46. To the glory God originally intended.

  47. But from which Adam and Eve fell by rebelling against God.

  48. Jesus is already there.

  49. He's now crowned with glory and honour.

  50. He has risen again.

  51. He is the beginning of the new creation.

  52. And he's leading us there.

  53. He's the one who leads us.

  54. But as we look at verse 10, aren't there a couple of questions that come to our minds straight away?

  55. How is it fitting that Jesus should be made perfect through suffering?

  56. And hang on.

  57. How can Jesus be made perfect?

  58. Isn't that what the author is saying there?

  59. It's fitting that he, God, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory,

  60. should make the founder of their salvation, Jesus, perfect through suffering.

  61. Now does that bring a question to you?

  62. How can the eternal Son of God be made perfect?

  63. There is no sin in him.

  64. In fact, the writer will say later on over the page there, chapter 4, verse 15, that Jesus, as a man, had no sin.

  65. Tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin.

  66. He was perfect.

  67. So what does this mean?

  68. That Jesus was made perfect.

  69. It cannot mean moral perfection.

  70. So what does it mean?

  71. I'm sure many of us have been to job interviews in our lives where, in a sense, we had perfect qualifications,

  72. and yet didn't get the job.

  73. Why?

  74. Oh, you don't have the experience, they say.

  75. Well, think of a young person applying to go to veterinary school for university.

  76. They've got straight A's all the way through their school life, straight A's predicted for their A-levels,

  77. really good report on the UCAS form from their teachers,

  78. and yet they don't get the offer.

  79. Why not?

  80. They haven't got the experience, they haven't spent their holidays going lambing in the Easter holidays,

  81. working in a vet practice during the summers,

  82. looking after animals wherever they could.

  83. They don't have the experience to be the complete candidate.

  84. And that's the sense of the word perfect here, the sense of being complete.

  85. That Jesus, through the physical experience of being a human being,

  86. of obeying his Father in every situation,

  87. becomes the complete saviour, the one who is equipped in every way,

  88. who has the experience to come alongside us,

  89. to rescue us, to liberate us.

  90. If you look over to, just across the page there,

  91. chapter 5, verses 8 and 9,

  92. the writer says a similar thing there that helps us to understand,

  93. I think.

  94. Although he was a son, chapter 5, verse 8,

  95. he learned obedience through what he suffered.

  96. And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation,

  97. to all who obey him.

  98. So Jesus had to learn obedience, not just as a theory,

  99. but in practice, as a human being.

  100. Of course, as the eternal son of God, he always obeyed his Father.

  101. The very incarnation shows that.

  102. His coming into the world was in obedience to the Father's plan.

  103. But then as a man, he had to learn obedience too.

  104. As a human being like you and I,

  105. he had to learn obedience from the inside.

  106. He had to learn it from the weakness of being human.

  107. He had to learn to obey when it was costly,

  108. even when it meant going to the cross.

  109. He had to learn to obey when it required faith,

  110. trusting that his Father would do what he had promised.

  111. He had to learn to obey the same way you and I have to learn to obey.

  112. In all the weakness of our flesh,

  113. in tiredness,

  114. in hunger,

  115. with pressure on us.

  116. He had to learn to obey when it was costly,

  117. when it meant trusting.

  118. And so he's the complete saviour,

  119. the perfect saviour for us.

  120. Because he's been a man like us.

  121. So that's what it means when he was made perfect through suffering.

  122. Of course, his obedience cost him his life.

  123. So how is it fitting,

  124. going back to chapter 2, verse 10 for a moment,

  125. how is it fitting for God to make Jesus perfect,

  126. complete through suffering?

  127. See, some people will say it's not fitting, is it?

  128. Some people will say,

  129. I don't like the idea of a God,

  130. who has to require someone else to die,

  131. to forgive other people.

  132. That's not very loving.

  133. That's just cruel.

  134. And even those who call themselves evangelical Christians,

  135. will say that the idea of

  136. the Son of God suffering in our place,

  137. is nothing more than cosmic child abuse.

  138. There's not a fitting way to talk of a God of love.

  139. Well, that is not what the scriptures say.

  140. The scriptures say it is fitting

  141. that God our Father in heaven

  142. should make his Son

  143. obedient to death,

  144. even death on a cross.

  145. That was fitting to achieve our salvation.

  146. Why?

  147. Because it's fitting,

  148. in keeping with the very character of God himself.

  149. The God who revealed himself on Sinai

  150. as being the one who keeps steadfast love for thousands,

  151. forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin,

  152. and yet,

  153. in Exodus 34, verse 5,

    Exodus 34:5

  154. will by no means clear the guilty.

  155. It is fitting for a God who is loving and will forgive,

  156. and yet holy,

  157. and will not just overlook sin.

  158. The only fitting way to resolve that tension

  159. was for the Son of God

  160. to take on human flesh

  161. and die to become the perfect rescuer for his people,

  162. so that God's justice could be satisfied

  163. and God's love gratified.

  164. It was fitting for only death could bring forgiveness.

  165. It's entirely in keeping with God's character.

  166. So here is Jesus,

  167. the champion of our salvation,

  168. who leads us to glory,

  169. because he has suffered for us,

  170. because he was a human

  171. and tasted death for us,

  172. as verse 9 put it.

  173. Yeah, that carol we sing every Christmas,

  174. once in Royal David's City,

  175. has it absolutely right, doesn't he?

  176. And he leads his children on

  177. to the place where he has gone.

  178. Yes, that's right.

  179. Jesus is our champion.

  180. He leads us.

  181. Not just to the place he's gone,

  182. but to the state he has attained,

  183. to the glory of restored humanity.

  184. He's in glory kneels

  185. to fix what is torn,

  186. as we just sung in that last song.

  187. So as our champion,

  188. he leads us to glory.

  189. But also as our champion,

  190. he liberates us from slavery.

  191. Look down to verse 14, will you?

  192. Since then,

  193. the children share in flesh and blood.

  194. He, Jesus himself,

  195. partook of the same things,

  196. the same flesh and blood,

  197. like you and I have,

  198. that through death,

  199. he might destroy the one

  200. who has the power of death.

  201. That is the devil.

  202. Jesus took on flesh,

  203. became a human being like us,

  204. to die,

  205. to destroy the one

  206. who has the power of death.

  207. Now, does that strike you

  208. as a funny name for the devil,

  209. a funny title for the devil?

  210. The one who has the power of death.

  211. Seems strange, doesn't it?

  212. We need to understand

  213. that the devil does not naturally

  214. have the power of death.

  215. It's not his by right.

  216. It's not his inherent right.

  217. Why does death come to the world?

  218. Death comes as a result of our sin.

  219. Death is God's judgment

  220. on human sin.

  221. So the devil does not naturally

  222. have the power of death,

  223. but the basis for his power over us

  224. is not his natural authority,

  225. but our sin,

  226. our guilt.

  227. It's like his weapon in blackmail.

  228. How do people,

  229. he gets gangs who extort money

  230. from folk, don't they?

  231. Blackmailing them.

  232. How do they do it?

  233. It's because they entice them

  234. into some sort of misdemeanor,

  235. or misdoing,

  236. or get some photograph,

  237. evidence of a politician

  238. or a celebrity

  239. doing something

  240. they shouldn't be doing.

  241. And then they exploit that

  242. and blackmail them.

  243. And so they have this power

  244. over the person

  245. they're exploiting,

  246. not because it's naturally

  247. held power,

  248. but because of the guilt

  249. of the other person.

  250. Because they've enticed them

  251. to do something

  252. they shouldn't do.

  253. And that's exactly

  254. how the devil works,

  255. doesn't it?

  256. He seduces humanity

  257. into revolt against God.

  258. So death enters the world

  259. as God's punishment

  260. on our sin.

  261. And the devil uses that,

  262. he exploits it

  263. to hold us as slaves.

  264. Just as a criminal gang

  265. will blackmail people.

  266. So the devil exploits us,

  267. but it's not his own

  268. natural power.

  269. He uses that fear then

  270. to enslave us.

  271. Look at verse 15.

  272. Jesus comes to deliver

  273. all those who through

  274. fear of death

  275. are subject to

  276. lifelong slavery.

  277. Now for the people

  278. who read this letter first,

  279. they really did live

  280. in fear of death

  281. for following Jesus.

  282. In chapter 10

  283. we discover that

  284. many of them

  285. had been arrested,

  286. been thrown into prison,

  287. had had their property

  288. confiscated,

  289. all for following

  290. Jesus Christ.

  291. And of course

  292. they have brothers and

  293. sisters around the world

  294. for whom that is

  295. a reality today.

  296. So the fear of death

  297. was a reason for them,

  298. for thinking about

  299. giving up on the

  300. Christian faith

  301. and just going back

  302. to Judaism

  303. which was so much

  304. simpler as far

  305. as they were concerned.

  306. Now very few of us

  307. in this room

  308. experience the fear

  309. of death like that,

  310. do we?

  311. And yet the devil

  312. does use the fear

  313. of death

  314. to get us to do

  315. things we shouldn't

  316. be doing.

  317. It's just a bit more

  318. subtle, isn't it?

  319. He makes us think,

  320. he tempts us to believe

  321. that actually we need

  322. to live for now.

  323. That actually all

  324. there is is now.

  325. So why hold on

  326. to our money

  327. and not invest

  328. in kingdom work?

  329. Well it's because

  330. the devil is tempting

  331. us to think that

  332. actually this life

  333. is all there is.

  334. Why are we tempted

  335. not to stand for Christ

  336. now in our schools

  337. or in our workplaces?

  338. It's because we're

  339. tempted to think

  340. our reputation now,

  341. our friendships now

  342. are the most

  343. important thing.

  344. But actually that's

  345. the fear of death,

  346. the fear that there

  347. is nothing beyond

  348. this life.

  349. So the devil uses

  350. it to enslave us.

  351. Well why give in

  352. to sexual temptation

  353. or seeking pleasure

  354. through material gain

  355. or just going

  356. travelling for the

  357. buzz it gives us?

  358. It's because we think

  359. that this life now

  360. is all there is.

  361. That's just the other

  362. side of the coin

  363. from the fear of death,

  364. isn't it?

  365. The fear there's

  366. nothing beyond life now.

  367. So the devil uses

  368. these things to

  369. enslave us.

  370. So what do we need?

  371. When people are

  372. enslaved, what do

  373. they need?

  374. Those people held

  375. hostage in the

  376. cafe Lint last

  377. Monday in Sydney,

  378. what do they need?

  379. They need someone

  380. to come in to

  381. disarm the terrorists

  382. holding them captive

  383. and to lead them

  384. out into liberty

  385. again.

  386. And that's exactly

  387. what Jesus does.

  388. Look at verses

  389. 14 to 16

  390. describe.

  391. Verse 14

  392. In his death

  393. Jesus defeats

  394. the devil.

  395. Verse 14

  396. He himself likewise

  397. partook of the

  398. same things that

  399. through death

  400. he might destroy

  401. the one who has

  402. the power of death.

  403. Through Jesus'

  404. death and

  405. resurrection

  406. Satan is defeated.

  407. He no longer

  408. has the power

  409. of death over us.

  410. And Jesus

  411. delivers us

  412. from slavery.

  413. Delivers us

  414. from the

  415. disarms of the

  416. devil.

  417. Takes away that

  418. fear of death

  419. through his

  420. resurrection.

  421. We cannot be

  422. enslaved to that

  423. fear anymore.

  424. And then he

  425. leads us to

  426. safety.

  427. Verse 16

  428. For surely

  429. it is not

  430. angels that he

  431. helps

  432. but he

  433. helps

  434. literally

  435. takes hold

  436. of to help

  437. the offspring

  438. of Abraham.

  439. For that word

  440. is used in the

  441. Greek version

  442. of the Old

  443. Testament

  444. in Isaiah

  445. 41.

  446. It's for God

  447. taking hold

  448. of his people

  449. who are in

  450. exile around

  451. the nations

  452. taking hold

  453. of them

  454. to bring them

  455. back into

  456. liberty and

  457. salvation.

  458. And that's

  459. what Jesus

  460. does.

  461. He takes hold

  462. of us

  463. to lead us

  464. to liberty.

  465. Like a

  466. superhero

  467. sweeping in

  468. to get the

  469. damsel in

  470. distress.

  471. Defeating

  472. the baddie

  473. leading her

  474. out

  475. taking hold

  476. of her.

  477. Superman

  478. swinging

  479. him

  480. taking hold

  481. of her

  482. to fly

  483. her away

  484. to safety.

  485. It's what

  486. Jesus does

  487. as our

  488. champion

  489. come to

  490. liberate us.

  491. He leads

  492. us to

  493. safety.

  494. And who

  495. are these

  496. offspring of

  497. Abraham?

  498. That's not

  499. the Israelites

  500. not those

  501. genetically

  502. descended from

  503. Abraham.

  504. But it's

  505. those who

  506. share the

  507. same faith

  508. as Abraham.

  509. That's what

  510. Paul tells

  511. us in

  512. Galatians 3

    Galatians 3:7

  513. verse 7.

  514. It is those

  515. of faith

  516. who are the

  517. sons of

  518. Abraham.

  519. If we

  520. trust these

  521. great promises

  522. we're the

  523. ones who

  524. know Jesus

  525. is our

  526. champion.

  527. The one

  528. who leads

  529. us to

  530. glory and

  531. who liberates

  532. us from

  533. slavery.

  534. And that's

  535. why he

  536. became a

  537. man.

  538. So he

  539. could do

  540. that.

  541. And isn't

  542. glory what

  543. everybody really

  544. wants?

  545. We don't use

  546. those words.

  547. But isn't

  548. it the

  549. ache of

  550. every human

  551. heart to

  552. get rid of

  553. the pain?

  554. To live in

  555. a world where

  556. our teenage

  557. sons don't

  558. suffer sickle

  559. cell and end

  560. up in

  561. hospital so

  562. suddenly?

  563. To live in a

  564. world where

  565. there is no

  566. more death,

  567. mourning,

  568. crying or

  569. pain?

  570. Isn't that

  571. the glory we

  572. all want?

  573. It will not

  574. come through

  575. politics.

  576. It will not

  577. come through

  578. our hard work

  579. as we

  580. accumulate

  581. enough money

  582. to comfort

  583. us and

  584. to soften

  585. the blows

  586. of life.

  587. It will

  588. only come

  589. through the

  590. saviour who

  591. leads us

  592. to glory.

  593. Isn't

  594. freedom what

  595. we all

  596. want?

  597. Isn't

  598. freedom what

  599. we all

  600. want?

  601. You may

  602. not have a

  603. six-year-old

  604. daughter so

  605. you may not

  606. have watched

  607. the film

  608. Frozen.

  609. Some of us

  610. have done

  611. many times.

  612. But it's

  613. actually a great

  614. film in many

  615. ways.

  616. And yet the

  617. big song,

  618. the song that

  619. is so popular

  620. in that film,

  621. Let It Go,

  622. sings the

  623. heroine Elsa.

  624. And it

  625. is this great

  626. line,

  627. no right,

  628. no right,

  629. no wrong,

  630. no more

  631. rules for me,

  632. I'm free.

  633. And that's

  634. what people

  635. want,

  636. they want to

  637. be free.

  638. And people

  639. think that

  640. the way to

  641. freedom is

  642. no more

  643. rules,

  644. no more

  645. responsibilities,

  646. no more

  647. right or

  648. wrong.

  649. And yet

  650. that's not

  651. true.

  652. In fact

  653. another song

  654. in the film,

  655. Elsa then

  656. sings,

  657. I'm such a

  658. fool,

  659. I cannot

  660. be free.

  661. And it's

  662. true,

  663. the only

  664. one who

  665. liberates

  666. us is

  667. Jesus,

  668. who liberates

  669. us from

  670. the ultimate

  671. slavery,

  672. which is

  673. not the

  674. rules that

  675. help us

  676. to find

  677. him,

  678. but the

  679. sin and

  680. the devil

  681. and death

  682. which ensnare

  683. us all.

  684. So Jesus

  685. is the

  686. champion,

  687. becomes a

  688. man to

  689. lead us

  690. and to

  691. liberate

  692. us.

  693. So that's

  694. the first

  695. picture we

  696. get of

  697. what he

  698. does.

  699. But there's

  700. another

  701. surprising

  702. picture,

  703. I think,

  704. down in

  705. verses 11

  706. to 13.

  707. What words

  708. do we

  709. normally use

  710. to describe

  711. Jesus?

  712. We think

  713. of him as

  714. our saviour,

  715. don't we?

  716. Perhaps we

  717. think of him as

  718. our priest,

  719. our shepherd,

  720. our king,

  721. our Lord.

  722. He is all

  723. those things.

  724. How does

  725. he speak of

  726. us?

  727. Look at the

  728. end of

  729. verse 11

  730. there.

  731. He who

  732. sanctifies,

  733. that is

  734. Jesus,

  735. who sets

  736. us apart.

  737. Those who

  738. are sanctified,

  739. that's us,

  740. who have been

  741. set apart for

  742. God's purposes,

  743. all have one

  744. source,

  745. God the

  746. Father,

  747. whose plan of

  748. salvation,

  749. all this is,

  750. that the

  751. Son executes,

  752. and that

  753. is why

  754. he,

  755. Jesus,

  756. is not ashamed

  757. to call them

  758. brothers.

  759. He calls us

  760. brothers.

  761. Isn't that

  762. amazing?

  763. I give

  764. Jesus

  765. countless

  766. reasons

  767. every day

  768. to be ashamed

  769. of me.

  770. Don't you?

  771. And yet

  772. he is not

  773. ashamed

  774. to call us

  775. brothers

  776. to his

  777. heavenly

  778. Father and

  779. to one

  780. another.

  781. Did you

  782. ever have

  783. an elder

  784. brother at

  785. school?

  786. I don't

  787. know if

  788. you did.

  789. I didn't.

  790. My brothers

  791. are so much

  792. older,

  793. they both

  794. left school

  795. by the time

  796. I got

  797. there.

  798. So actually

  799. all I

  800. got was

  801. the,

  802. ah,

  803. you're

  804. John

  805. Cashman's

  806. brother,

  807. and trouble

  808. as a result.

  809. But I

  810. can imagine

  811. it could be

  812. either really

  813. good or

  814. really terrible

  815. to have a

  816. big brother

  817. at school.

  818. It could

  819. be really

  820. good if

  821. he's the

  822. sort of

  823. big brother

  824. who helps

  825. you out

  826. when you're

  827. stuck,

  828. who helps

  829. you understand

  830. how the

  831. different

  832. teachers

  833. work,

  834. and how

  835. you can

  836. learn well

  837. from them.

  838. The sort

  839. of brother

  840. who will

  841. defend you

  842. if others

  843. want to

  844. bully you,

  845. and he's

  846. so big

  847. they wouldn't

  848. dare to

  849. do that.

  850. It would

  851. be great

  852. to have a

  853. big brother

  854. who,

  855. when you're

  856. confused about

  857. things,

  858. can say,

  859. don't worry,

  860. I've been

  861. there too,

  862. let me show

  863. you,

  864. let me help

  865. you.

  866. That would

  867. be a great

  868. big brother

  869. to have,

  870. wouldn't it?

  871. On the

  872. other hand,

  873. your school

  874. life could

  875. be miserable

  876. if you had

  877. this sort

  878. of big

  879. brother who

  880. was just

  881. too cool,

  882. too trendy,

  883. to want to

  884. have a little

  885. brother lower

  886. down the

  887. school who

  888. would damage

  889. his credibility

  890. and his

  891. reputation,

  892. and who

  893. therefore was

  894. ashamed of

  895. you.

  896. You see

  897. what sort

  898. of big

  899. brother Jesus

  900. is?

  901. He's not

  902. the latter,

  903. but the

  904. former.

  905. And that's

  906. our big

  907. brother,

  908. what does

  909. he do?

  910. He sings

  911. with us,

  912. and he

  913. stands with

  914. us.

  915. Look at

  916. verse 12,

  917. he sings

  918. with us.

  919. Paul mentioned

  920. this a few

  921. weeks ago in

  922. our series on

  923. worship.

  924. This is

  925. Jesus.

  926. He is not

  927. ashamed to

  928. call them

  929. brothers,

  930. saying,

  931. I will

  932. tell of

  933. your names,

  934. my brothers,

  935. and in

  936. the congregation

  937. I will

  938. sing your

  939. praise.

  940. This is

  941. taken from

  942. Psalm 22,

  943. the psalm

  944. Jesus quoted

  945. on the

  946. cross.

  947. The psalm

  948. begins,

  949. My God,

  950. my God,

  951. why have

  952. you forsaken

  953. me?

  954. And that

  955. psalm ends

  956. in triumph.

  957. So why

  958. does Jesus

  959. sing this

  960. psalm with

  961. us?

  962. Because that

  963. is a pattern

  964. of the

  965. Christian life.

  966. He stands

  967. with us,

  968. singing this.

  969. Jesus is not

  970. only singing

  971. to us,

  972. he's sharing

  973. his experience

  974. with us,

  975. if you like.

  976. The first

  977. line of

  978. verse 12,

  979. I will

  980. tell your

  981. name to

  982. my brothers.

  983. What is

  984. the Lord's

  985. name?

  986. The name

  987. in the

  988. Bible is

  989. the very

  990. character of

  991. God.

  992. God's

  993. name to

  994. God.

  995. It's as

  996. if Jesus

  997. is coming

  998. alongside us

  999. saying,

  1000. I know you

  1001. don't feel

  1002. like singing

  1003. this morning.

  1004. I know you

  1005. feel like God

  1006. doesn't care.

  1007. I know there

  1008. is sadness

  1009. in your life,

  1010. your dreams

  1011. are broken,

  1012. there are

  1013. things you

  1014. don't even

  1015. want to share

  1016. with people

  1017. around you.

  1018. You wonder

  1019. if God

  1020. still hears

  1021. and answers

  1022. prayers.

  1023. Let me

  1024. tell you

  1025. our

  1026. Father's

  1027. name.

  1028. Let me

  1029. share with

  1030. you my

  1031. experience.

  1032. I hung

  1033. on a

  1034. cross

  1035. forsaken

  1036. by the

  1037. Father

  1038. bearing

  1039. your sins

  1040. but my

  1041. Father,

  1042. our

  1043. Father

  1044. raised me

  1045. to life

  1046. again

  1047. because that

  1048. is what

  1049. he is

  1050. like.

  1051. He is

  1052. God who

  1053. is faithful

  1054. and just

  1055. and loves

  1056. his children

  1057. and he

  1058. loves you

  1059. too.

  1060. Just as

  1061. he raised

  1062. me up

  1063. through

  1064. suffering,

  1065. he is

  1066. merciful and

  1067. full of

  1068. steadfast love

  1069. and will

  1070. raise you

  1071. up as

  1072. well.

  1073. Come,

  1074. sing with

  1075. me as

  1076. I sing

  1077. his praises.

  1078. And Jesus'

  1079. perfect praise

  1080. covers over

  1081. and encourages

  1082. our faltering,

  1083. stumbling

  1084. praise.

  1085. He's a

  1086. brother who

  1087. sings with

  1088. us even

  1089. when we

  1090. do not

  1091. feel like

  1092. singing.

  1093. He shares

  1094. his experience.

  1095. Not only does

  1096. he sing with

  1097. us, he

  1098. stands with

  1099. us.

  1100. Look at

  1101. verse 13.

  1102. And again,

  1103. I will

  1104. put my

  1105. trust in

  1106. him.

  1107. And again,

  1108. behold I,

  1109. the children

  1110. God has

  1111. given me.

  1112. These are

  1113. words quoted

  1114. from Isaiah

    Isaiah 8 chapter mention

  1115. chapter 8.

  1116. In the context

  1117. there was a

  1118. time of

  1119. darkness for

  1120. the people

  1121. of Judah.

  1122. The king

  1123. was useless.

  1124. Jerusalem

  1125. was surrounded

  1126. by the Syrian

  1127. army and the

  1128. Israelite army

  1129. come to

  1130. attack Jerusalem

  1131. to get rid

  1132. of the king

  1133. and put a

  1134. new king

  1135. in place.

  1136. And God

  1137. had promised

  1138. that that

  1139. attack would

  1140. not be

  1141. successful.

  1142. But most

  1143. people ignored

  1144. God's

  1145. promise.

  1146. They trusted

  1147. in human

  1148. schemes to

  1149. try and

  1150. help them

  1151. instead.

  1152. They feared

  1153. the invasion,

  1154. trusted in

  1155. human schemes,

  1156. they looked

  1157. for comfort

  1158. in bogus

  1159. spirituality,

  1160. consulting

  1161. necromancers

  1162. and stuff

  1163. like this.

  1164. But in the

  1165. midst of that

  1166. darkness,

  1167. there was this

  1168. small band

  1169. of faithful

  1170. people,

  1171. Isaiah and

  1172. his family

  1173. and those

  1174. who believed

  1175. Isaiah's

  1176. message.

  1177. And they

  1178. clung to

  1179. God's word,

  1180. they said,

  1181. I will trust

  1182. in him.

  1183. Behold,

  1184. says Isaiah,

  1185. I and the

  1186. children God

  1187. has given

  1188. me.

  1189. And we

  1190. live in

  1191. similar times,

  1192. don't we?

  1193. Days when

  1194. people will

  1195. go for any

  1196. kind of

  1197. bogus

  1198. spirituality.

  1199. Look at

  1200. the horoscopes,

  1201. look at the

  1202. spiritual churches

  1203. around.

  1204. Or many

  1205. will just

  1206. rely on human

  1207. schemes,

  1208. look for the

  1209. government to

  1210. get to start

  1211. the economy,

  1212. look to the

  1213. NHS to

  1214. solve all

  1215. our health

  1216. issues,

  1217. and not go

  1218. to the

  1219. living God.

  1220. It can be

  1221. easy to

  1222. feel that

  1223. we're in a

  1224. very small

  1225. minority as

  1226. those who

  1227. believe God's

  1228. promises,

  1229. can't it?

  1230. It can be

  1231. easy to

  1232. think,

  1233. is it really

  1234. worth it?

  1235. Yet in

  1236. that,

  1237. as we

  1238. struggle to

  1239. trust the

  1240. living God,

  1241. Jesus stands

  1242. with us,

  1243. says,

  1244. look,

  1245. I trusted

  1246. him.

  1247. Behold,

  1248. Heavenly

  1249. Father,

  1250. I and the

  1251. children you

  1252. have given

  1253. me,

  1254. we will

  1255. trust you.

  1256. He stands

  1257. with us,

  1258. he identifies

  1259. with us as

  1260. a small

  1261. minority who

  1262. still trust in

  1263. the living

  1264. God.

  1265. He is a

  1266. brother who

  1267. identifies with

  1268. us,

  1269. singing with

  1270. us in our

  1271. suffering,

  1272. standing with

  1273. us as a

  1274. faithful few.

  1275. This is

  1276. our

  1277. Saviour.

  1278. This is

  1279. why he took

  1280. on human

  1281. flesh,

  1282. so he can

  1283. be the

  1284. champion who

  1285. rescues us,

  1286. and the

  1287. brother who

  1288. stands with

  1289. us,

  1290. and thirdly,

  1291. and quite

  1292. briefly,

  1293. the priest

  1294. who represents

  1295. us.

  1296. Look at

  1297. verse 17.

  1298. Therefore,

  1299. he had to

  1300. be made

  1301. like his

  1302. brothers in

  1303. every respect,

  1304. so that he

  1305. might become

  1306. a faithful

  1307. and merciful

  1308. high priest

  1309. in the

  1310. service of

  1311. God.

  1312. He was

  1313. made like

  1314. us in

  1315. every respect,

  1316. in every

  1317. respect,

  1318. born of

  1319. a mother.

  1320. He had to

  1321. grow and

  1322. learn.

  1323. He had to

  1324. feed his

  1325. mother's

  1326. breast.

  1327. He had to

  1328. learn to

  1329. walk.

  1330. He had

  1331. to learn

  1332. to talk.

  1333. He had

  1334. to learn

  1335. to make

  1336. tables.

  1337. The second

  1338. person of

  1339. the Trinity

  1340. made tables

  1341. for a

  1342. living.

  1343. He got

  1344. tired.

  1345. He got

  1346. cold.

  1347. He got

  1348. hungry.

  1349. He got

  1350. ill, I

  1351. presume.

  1352. Why?

  1353. So that he

  1354. might become

  1355. a merciful and

  1356. faithful high

  1357. priest in

  1358. the service

  1359. of God.

  1360. What does

  1361. a high

  1362. priest do?

  1363. He

  1364. represents

  1365. people to

  1366. God,

  1367. doesn't he?

  1368. That was the

  1369. job of the

  1370. high priest in

  1371. the Old

  1372. Testament.

  1373. He does

  1374. it in two

  1375. particular ways

  1376. we see here

  1377. in verses

  1378. 17 and

  1379. 18.

  1380. Firstly,

  1381. to make

  1382. propitiation

  1383. for the

  1384. sins of

  1385. the people.

  1386. Then verse

  1387. 18,

  1388. because he

  1389. himself has

  1390. suffered when

  1391. tempted,

  1392. he's able to

  1393. help those

  1394. who have

  1395. been tempted.

  1396. So the

  1397. high priest

  1398. first, he

  1399. makes

  1400. propitiation.

  1401. What does

  1402. that mean?

  1403. Well,

  1404. propitiation is

  1405. the sacrifice

  1406. that turns

  1407. away God's

  1408. just anger

  1409. at our sin.

  1410. It doesn't

  1411. just cover

  1412. over our sin,

  1413. but turns

  1414. the whole

  1415. anger away.

  1416. So that

  1417. God will

  1418. not be

  1419. angry at

  1420. your sin

  1421. or my

  1422. sin again,

  1423. because it

  1424. has already

  1425. been punished.

  1426. That punishment

  1427. has been

  1428. taken by

  1429. the Lord

  1430. Jesus.

  1431. This is

  1432. precisely why

  1433. he had to

  1434. become a

  1435. man,

  1436. because it

  1437. is human

  1438. sin that

  1439. incurs God's

  1440. wrath.

  1441. But it's

  1442. also why he

  1443. had to be

  1444. divine, he

  1445. had to be

  1446. the eternal

  1447. son of

  1448. God,

  1449. because he

  1450. had to be

  1451. big enough,

  1452. infinite,

  1453. eternal,

  1454. to pay

  1455. for all

  1456. our sin.

  1457. But that

  1458. is what

  1459. he's done.

  1460. Nothing

  1461. less than

  1462. one who

  1463. was fully

  1464. God and

  1465. fully man

  1466. could make

  1467. propitiation

  1468. for our

  1469. sin.

  1470. But Jesus

  1471. was fully

  1472. God, but

  1473. also fully

  1474. man, fully

  1475. flesh and

  1476. blood, so

  1477. that he

  1478. could make

  1479. propitiation,

  1480. take that

  1481. sin away

  1482. from us,

  1483. take God's

  1484. just punishment

  1485. for our sin

  1486. away from

  1487. us.

  1488. What's the

  1489. result now?

  1490. It means

  1491. that you

  1492. and I, as

  1493. we trust in

  1494. Jesus, are

  1495. perfectly

  1496. forgiven,

  1497. perfectly

  1498. loved,

  1499. perfectly

  1500. adopted as

  1501. children in

  1502. God's family.

  1503. Our sin will

  1504. not be punished

  1505. again, because

  1506. it has been

  1507. punished in

  1508. Jesus on the

  1509. cross.

  1510. So we are

  1511. safe.

  1512. Where do you

  1513. think your sins

  1514. are this morning?

  1515. We all come

  1516. here aware of

  1517. our sin,

  1518. don't we?

  1519. Yet we

  1520. confess it and

  1521. it is done as

  1522. we have heard

  1523. gloriously in

  1524. those words from

  1525. 1 John earlier.

  1526. Jesus has

  1527. offered the

  1528. perfect sacrifice

  1529. to pay for

  1530. them.

  1531. Do you think

  1532. you've done

  1533. something that

  1534. is unforgivable?

  1535. What could

  1536. you possibly

  1537. have done that

  1538. is so big that

  1539. the eternal

  1540. Son of God

  1541. could not have

  1542. paid for it?

  1543. He has made

  1544. propitiation for

  1545. us.

  1546. As our high

  1547. priest, he

  1548. helps us in

  1549. temptation.

  1550. Look at verse

  1551. 18.

  1552. Because he

  1553. himself has

  1554. suffered when

  1555. tempted, he's

  1556. able to help

  1557. those who are

  1558. being tempted.

  1559. It's worth

  1560. thinking about,

  1561. isn't it?

  1562. Part of

  1563. temptation is

  1564. always the

  1565. false hope of

  1566. release from

  1567. suffering, isn't

  1568. there?

  1569. it?

  1570. Why do we get

  1571. angry?

  1572. Because we

  1573. think we'll

  1574. feel better

  1575. when we've

  1576. just let it

  1577. all go.

  1578. Let's go back

  1579. to the frozen

  1580. thief for a

  1581. moment.

  1582. Why do we

  1583. give in to

  1584. those temptations?

  1585. We think we'll

  1586. be happy.

  1587. Why do we

  1588. go to the

  1589. temptation of

  1590. just spending

  1591. money on

  1592. ourselves,

  1593. buying something

  1594. ridiculous in

  1595. the sales?

  1596. It's sort of

  1597. comfort shopping,

  1598. isn't it?

  1599. It'll make me

  1600. feel better.

  1601. Jesus resisted

  1602. temptation, he

  1603. suffered temptation.

  1604. Temptation is

  1605. like a kind of

  1606. bungee rope,

  1607. isn't it?

  1608. The harder you

  1609. run from it,

  1610. the more it

  1611. will pull you

  1612. back.

  1613. Yet Jesus

  1614. resisted to

  1615. the uttermost,

  1616. even going to

  1617. the point of

  1618. death on a

  1619. cross.

  1620. He knows what

  1621. it is to

  1622. suffer when

  1623. tempted, and

  1624. so he's able

  1625. to help us in

  1626. that temptation.

  1627. Isn't that

  1628. amazing?

  1629. He doesn't

  1630. sit there and

  1631. go, you know

  1632. what, I've

  1633. done it, you

  1634. should do the

  1635. same.

  1636. Follow my

  1637. example.

  1638. Get over your

  1639. problems.

  1640. Rather, he

  1641. sympathises, he

  1642. helps us.

  1643. Years ago, I

  1644. used to go

  1645. climbing with a

  1646. friend of mine,

  1647. Billy, and I

  1648. don't have a

  1649. great head for

  1650. heights, and I'm

  1651. a bit of a

  1652. muppet when it

  1653. comes to

  1654. climbing, to be

  1655. honest.

  1656. I could never

  1657. see the hand

  1658. holds or the

  1659. footholds.

  1660. Billy was an

  1661. excellent natural

  1662. climber, but he

  1663. was incredibly

  1664. patient.

  1665. He'd show me the

  1666. way up, he'd

  1667. point out where

  1668. the footholds

  1669. were, he'd

  1670. point out where

  1671. the hand

  1672. holds are.

  1673. As he was

  1674. waiting on the

  1675. top with the

  1676. rope pulling me

  1677. up, he wouldn't

  1678. kind of go,

  1679. come on, can

  1680. she get a

  1681. move on, I'm

  1682. getting cold up

  1683. here.

  1684. He'd encourage

  1685. me.

  1686. And when, on

  1687. one particular

  1688. occasion in the

  1689. Lake District, I

  1690. was just tired and

  1691. exhausted, went

  1692. for a hand

  1693. hold and missed

  1694. and slipped and

  1695. fell, he still

  1696. had the rope.

  1697. And so he

  1698. pulled me up.

  1699. He didn't

  1700. lecture me.

  1701. He's pulled me

  1702. up, made sure I

  1703. was safe, gave

  1704. me a drink.

  1705. That's the kind

  1706. of high priest

  1707. Jesus is.

  1708. He knows our

  1709. weaknesses.

  1710. He knows what

  1711. it is to be

  1712. tired and yet

  1713. to remain

  1714. patient.

  1715. He knows what

  1716. it is to be

  1717. under pressure

  1718. from work.

  1719. After all, his

  1720. work was to be

  1721. the saviour of

  1722. the world.

  1723. None of us do

  1724. that as a day

  1725. job, do we?

  1726. And yet he

  1727. doesn't say, get

  1728. on with it.

  1729. He is faithful

  1730. to help us.

  1731. So when we're

  1732. tempted, we can

  1733. lean on him.

  1734. We can lean

  1735. on him because

  1736. he is merciful and

  1737. understands.

  1738. So what do we

  1739. celebrate at

  1740. Christmas?

  1741. Why is Christmas

  1742. good?

  1743. It's because the

  1744. Son of God took

  1745. on our flesh to

  1746. be our champion,

  1747. to liberate us,

  1748. to lead us to

  1749. glory, to be

  1750. our brother who

  1751. stands with us,

  1752. not ashamed of

  1753. us, sings with

  1754. us in our

  1755. suffering.

  1756. stands with

  1757. us as a

  1758. minority,

  1759. encouraging us

  1760. to be faithful

  1761. to our

  1762. heavenly father

  1763. and to be our

  1764. high priest,

  1765. to make

  1766. propitiation for

  1767. us, to help

  1768. us when tempted.

  1769. As Athanasius

  1770. put it back in

  1771. the fourth

  1772. century, Christ

  1773. became what we

  1774. are, that he

  1775. might make us

  1776. what he is.

  1777. That is the

  1778. good news of

  1779. Christmas.

  1780. The Son of God

  1781. took on flesh

  1782. to be our

  1783. complete

  1784. saviour.

  1785. So let us

  1786. lean on him

  1787. throughout our

  1788. lives, knowing

  1789. that one day

  1790. we will become

  1791. what he is, in

  1792. the glory he is

  1793. leading us to.

  1794. Let's pray.
