  1. See, it's ten past, so we'd better get going, I guess.

  2. Great to have you here, and especially a warm welcome if you've come as part of the Council's Christianity Awareness Week.

  3. Particularly good to have you. If you're not here for that reason, it's still good to have you.

  4. What we're doing this week, because Easter is coming up, and because our Christian friends and the Council have put this week on,

  5. we're looking particularly at Easter, because Easter is the heart of what Christianity is about.

  6. And so today's message is, at last, some good news. That's where we're going.

  7. Because we all need good news, don't we? We all need good news.

  8. And at the heart of the Christian message is good news. In fact, the Christian message itself is called the Gospel, which is literally good news.

  9. So what I'm going to do, if you've got a Bible, you can turn to it.

  10. Or if you've got one of the little booklets I put out in the chairs, I'm going to turn to this.

  11. This has a little bit, or two chapters from the Bible. Two chapters from Luke's Gospel, Luke's account of Jesus' life.

  12. And so what I'm going to do is read part of the account of the whole Easter story, and then we'll pray, and then we'll look at what that means for us.

  13. I should say before I start that the guy who wrote this, Luke, was a doctor.

  14. And he says at the very start of his book, you don't have the start, you don't have the end, but it's worth reading the start as well.

  15. At the start, he says he's gone to eyewitnesses to get a reliable account so that people can be sure of what they believe.

  16. So as we read this, you might want to bear in mind it is an eyewitness account.

  17. And you might also want to bear in mind the context of what has happened.

  18. So we're going to be reading on page 21 in these little booklets.

  19. If you've got a whole Bible there, then it's Luke chapter 24.

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  20. We're starting to read at verse 35.

  21. But the context here is that the people we're about to read about had just lost a close friend, Jesus.

  22. Not only a close friend, but someone who was their leader, someone who had touched their lives in profound ways and given them hope.

  23. On a Friday, he had been crucified, a terrible, awful, hideous, humiliating death.

  24. And we pick up the story on a Sunday.

  25. So let me read, then I'll pray, then I'll talk.

  26. And there will be time at the end for questions and hopefully answers.

  27. So if you've got any questions that come to mind while I'm speaking, do write them down.

  28. I'll do my best to deal with them in a Q&A session at the end.

  29. Anyway, here we go.

  30. So this is Luke chapter 24, verse 35, page 21 in these booklets.

    Luke 24:35

  31. Then the two from Emmaus told their story of how Jesus had appeared to them as they were walking along the road.

  32. And how they had recognised him as he was breaking the bread.

  33. And just as they were telling about it, Jesus himself, remember he died two days earlier.

  34. Jesus himself stood among them, was suddenly standing there among them.

  35. Peace be with you, he said.

  36. But the whole group was startled and frightened, thinking they were seeing a ghost.

  37. Why are you frightened, he asked.

  38. Why are your hearts filled with doubt?

  39. Look at my hands.

  40. Look at my feet.

  41. You can see there that it's really me.

  42. Touch me.

  43. And make sure that I'm not a ghost.

  44. Because ghosts don't have bodies as you see that I do.

  45. As he spoke, he showed them his hands and his feet.

  46. Still they stood there in disbelief, filled with joy and wonder.

  47. Then he asked them, do you have anything here to eat?

  48. They gave him a piece of boiled fish, and he ate it as they watched.

  49. Then he said, when I was with you before, I told you that everything written about me and the law of Moses and the prophets and in the Psalms must be fulfilled.

  50. Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures.

  51. And he said, yes, it was written long ago that the Messiah would suffer and die and rise from the dead on the third day.

  52. The Messiah was God's promised king.

  53. One he promised would come to rescue his people.

  54. So Jesus carries on, verse 47.

  55. It was also written that this message would be proclaimed in the authority of his name to all the nations, beginning in Jerusalem.

  56. There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.

  57. You are witnesses of these things.

  58. Well, as Christians, we don't believe the Bible is any ordinary book, but it's God's book, it's God's word.

  59. And so it's right to pray for him to speak to us as we study it together.

  60. So let's pray for a moment now.

  61. Almighty God, we thank you for this reliable eyewitness account of these events.

  62. We pray that now as I speak, as we listen to it, that your word would come to us as it is, not merely as the words of a man, but as the word of God, with power and with conviction and with the Holy Spirit.

  63. May we leave here knowing we've heard your voice.

  64. For we ask it in Jesus' name.

  65. Amen.

  66. Amen.

  67. Well, we could all do a good year, couldn't we?

  68. I don't know about you but wherever I look on

  69. websites, on news websites

  70. I'm always tempted to having seen

  71. the sort of dismal headlines to then go

  72. and find a kind of humorous article

  73. or story about the lost dog that's just been found

  74. or whatever it is to kind of take my mind

  75. off the bad stuff and

  76. I found this morning I'm not the only person who does that

  77. so as I checked the BBC news

  78. website this morning with all the news

  79. of atrocities in Syria

  80. and war in Ukraine

  81. impending debates about elections in this country

  82. do you know what the top three most

  83. read news stories on the BBC website

  84. were?

  85. number one, Angelina Jolie

  86. has had her ovaries removed

  87. number two

  88. why nine hours sleep may be bad

  89. for you

  90. number three

  91. deadly dog disease cause

  92. unclear, so typical

  93. British we're concerned about dead dogs from

  94. Crufts or whatever it was, I didn't even look

  95. at the article

  96. so you're so desperate for some good news we'll do anything

  97. to avoid reality sometimes, won't we

  98. we'll do anything to avoid facing how bad things are

  99. I don't know if you remember

  100. but last summer

  101. the comedian and actor Robin Williams

  102. tragically took his own life

  103. having been dealing with mental health problems for a long time

  104. and at the time

  105. his fellow comedian

  106. or at least alleged comedian

  107. Russell Brand

  108. wrote in the Guardian

  109. describing Williams as

  110. a hilarious stranger

  111. that we could rely on

  112. to anarchically interrupt

  113. the all-encompassing

  114. sadness

  115. of the world

  116. we looked to Robin Williams

  117. to anarchically interrupt

  118. the all-encompassing

  119. sadness

  120. of the world

  121. goes on

  122. today

  123. Robin Williams

  124. is part of the sad narrative

  125. that we used to turn to him

  126. to disrupt

  127. in other words

  128. we wanted entertainment

  129. we looked to this man for entertainment

  130. and tragically

  131. he's gone as well

  132. he added

  133. is it melancholy

  134. to think

  135. that a world

  136. that Robin Williams

  137. can't live in

  138. must be broken

  139. is it just melancholy

  140. to think

  141. that a world

  142. that Robin Williams

  143. can't live in

  144. must be broken

  145. this man

  146. who brought

  147. so much entertainment

  148. to so many people

  149. if he can't

  150. hack it

  151. in the real world

  152. then doesn't that mean

  153. the world is broken

  154. I wonder how you feel

  155. about that statement

  156. as we look out

  157. at a world

  158. surely it is broken

  159. isn't it

  160. the wars

  161. the famines

  162. the diseases

  163. as we look at our own lives

  164. we see brokenness

  165. don't we

  166. sudden health problems

  167. sudden relationship

  168. difficulties

  169. suddenly work goes

  170. I know in the council

  171. you've been dealing

  172. with lots of uncertainty

  173. so there is a

  174. death

  175. is if you like

  176. the ultimate manifestation

  177. of the brokenness

  178. and sadness

  179. that we feel

  180. in this world

  181. and so we need

  182. some good news

  183. we're desperate

  184. for some good news

  185. and that's where

  186. the story of Easter

  187. kicks in

  188. because this is good news

  189. if we understand it

  190. if we really grasp

  191. what this is about

  192. then it is the best news

  193. ever

  194. and I want to look at

  195. as we look through

  196. this story I just read

  197. I want us to look at

  198. first of all

  199. the emotions

  200. of the people involved

  201. and how those emotions

  202. changed

  203. and secondly

  204. Jesus' explanation

  205. of what had happened

  206. and finally

  207. Jesus' invitation

  208. to all of us

  209. so if you've got

  210. that little booklet there

  211. you might like to turn

  212. to page 21 again

  213. and we'll follow it

  214. through with me

  215. as we speak about it

  216. now remember

  217. this is Sunday

  218. on the Friday

  219. Jesus had died

  220. Jesus who was

  221. their hero

  222. their lifesaver

  223. who changed their lives

  224. they'd followed him

  225. for years

  226. and to begin with

  227. they just knew grief

  228. so as Jesus was

  229. hanging on the cross

  230. all his disciples

  231. left

  232. shattered

  233. in fact when he was

  234. arrested they all

  235. ran away terrified

  236. they hid themselves

  237. in a room

  238. but as Sunday morning

  239. hit the third day

  240. Friday, Saturday

  241. Sunday, the third day

  242. strange things

  243. started to happen

  244. so first of all

  245. some women

  246. went to Jesus' tomb

  247. to embalm his body

  248. as was the custom

  249. and they found

  250. the tomb empty

  251. and they ran back

  252. they found the tomb

  253. empty and they found

  254. angels telling them

  255. why are you looking

  256. for the living

  257. among the dead

  258. he's alive

  259. so they ran back

  260. to tell all the rest

  261. of Jesus' followers

  262. that this

  263. if you turn back

  264. over the page

  265. to chapter 18

  266. for a moment

  267. almost at the top

  268. of the page

  269. you'll see the response

  270. of the men

  271. who heard that story

  272. verse 11

  273. at the top of page 18

  274. but the story

  275. sounded like nonsense

  276. to the men

  277. so they didn't

  278. believe it

  279. they were cynical

  280. they didn't believe

  281. this coming back

  282. to life stuff

  283. even though

  284. it was their friends

  285. telling them

  286. they just thought

  287. the women were

  288. talking nonsense

  289. even though

  290. they'd heard Jesus

  291. say many times

  292. he would rise again

  293. they thought it was

  294. nonsense

  295. and immediately

  296. before this excerpt

  297. we're looking at

  298. page 21

  299. two people

  300. had just come back in

  301. having walked

  302. to a village

  303. called Ames

  304. having met Jesus

  305. there

  306. they then came back

  307. to Jerusalem

  308. straight away

  309. to tell all these

  310. followers of Jesus

  311. who were now hiding away

  312. that they'd seen Jesus

  313. but despite all this

  314. evidence that something

  315. amazing was happening

  316. look at their reaction

  317. look at their emotions

  318. when Jesus turns up

  319. verse 36

  320. just as they

  321. the two people

  322. from Ames

  323. were telling

  324. about it

  325. Jesus himself

  326. was suddenly

  327. standing there

  328. among them

  329. peace be with you

  330. he said

  331. but the whole group

  332. was startled

  333. and frightened

  334. thinking they were

  335. seeing a ghost

  336. startled and frightened

  337. that's how they felt

  338. literally terrified

  339. and frightened

  340. why?

  341. why do they feel

  342. like that

  343. when actually

  344. they'd already heard

  345. that Jesus was alive

  346. or they'd heard

  347. Jesus say

  348. he'd come back to life

  349. well surely

  350. the answer is simple

  351. isn't it

  352. we know

  353. dead people don't rise

  354. that is not the way

  355. it happens

  356. I was at a funeral

  357. a few weeks ago

  358. of a young woman

  359. I call her young

  360. because she was

  361. two years younger

  362. than me

  363. she was 40

  364. and tragically

  365. similar to Robin Williams

  366. she'd committed suicide

  367. and everyone in that room

  368. would love to have

  369. had her back again

  370. but she was dead

  371. dead people don't rise

  372. do they?

  373. that's why the disciples

  374. first reaction

  375. as they see

  376. what looks like

  377. Jesus standing there

  378. is it's a ghost

  379. not only were they terrified

  380. but they were also doubting

  381. look down to verse 38

  382. when Jesus speaks to them

  383. why are you frightened?

  384. Jesus asked

  385. why are your hearts

  386. filled with doubt?

  387. these guys

  388. were not likely

  389. to believe

  390. that Jesus

  391. was risen from the dead

  392. they were doubting

  393. that this could possibly

  394. be what was in front of them

  395. they needed evidence

  396. didn't they?

  397. they needed something

  398. to convince them

  399. and I wonder

  400. is that how you feel

  401. as you read this story?

  402. you say

  403. ok

  404. it's all very well

  405. this is something

  406. written

  407. apparently 2000 years ago

  408. I need evidence

  409. well I can understand that

  410. you're right

  411. to want evidence

  412. I'm a scientist

  413. by training

  414. I did a chemistry degree

  415. almost killed me

  416. but I did it

  417. and I'm someone

  418. who needs evidence

  419. to believe things

  420. and actually

  421. that's what the Bible does

  422. and look what Jesus does

  423. saying why are you doubting

  424. what does he say to them

  425. then?

  426. verse 39

  427. does he just say

  428. have faith

  429. trust me?

  430. look what he says

  431. verse 39

  432. look at my hands

  433. look at my feet

  434. you can see

  435. it is really me

  436. he doesn't say

  437. have faith

  438. he says

  439. have a look

  440. look at the evidence

  441. it's in front of you

  442. look at my hands

  443. you can still see

  444. the nail marks

  445. where two days ago

  446. I was nailed to a cross

  447. look at my feet

  448. you can still see

  449. the marks there

  450. where I was nailed

  451. to the cross

  452. have a look

  453. but was it just a ghost?

  454. was it just a ghost?

  455. did it just look like Jesus?

  456. well Jesus goes on

  457. he gives them more evidence

  458. doesn't he?

  459. verse 41

  460. still they stood there

  461. in disbelief

  462. filled with joy

  463. and wonder

  464. then he asked them

  465. do you have anything

  466. here to eat?

  467. they gave him a piece

  468. of broiled fish

  469. and he ate it

  470. as they watched

  471. now I don't know

  472. if you like the films

  473. the Pirates of the Caribbean

  474. films

  475. the first one's good

  476. they'll get worse

  477. after that

  478. but in the first film

  479. of the Pirates of the Caribbean

  480. excuse me if you're not

  481. into this

  482. but in the first film

  483. we discover

  484. some way through the movie

  485. that actually

  486. Captain Barbosa

  487. is the captain

  488. of a whole crew

  489. of ghosts

  490. on the Black Pearl

  491. and so as

  492. Captain Barbosa

  493. played by Geoffrey Rush

  494. turns to the glamorous

  495. heroine

  496. Miss Elizabeth Swan

  497. played by Keira Knightley

  498. he says

  499. you better believe

  500. in ghost stories

  501. my dear

  502. you're in one

  503. at which point

  504. he takes a flagon

  505. of rum

  506. and starts to drink it

  507. he pours it in

  508. of course the special effects

  509. are great

  510. so it always pours out

  511. on the floor

  512. going down his skeleton

  513. point being of course

  514. ghosts can't eat and drink

  515. and it wasn't just

  516. the Pirates of the Caribbean

  517. that told us that

  518. the disciples knew that

  519. as well

  520. 2,000 years before

  521. that's why Jesus

  522. says give me some fish

  523. and he eats it

  524. for these doubting people

  525. he wants them to know

  526. that he is solid

  527. he is real

  528. he is not a figment

  529. of their imagination

  530. they are all seeing him

  531. there is a lot of

  532. other evidence

  533. that convinces me

  534. that Jesus has risen

  535. from the dead

  536. that this is real history

  537. not just fantasy

  538. not just myth

  539. you might want to ask

  540. about that later

  541. I won't go into it now

  542. but there should be time

  543. for Q&A a bit later on

  544. but I hope you'll see

  545. that contrary to popular belief

  546. contrary to what

  547. Richard Dawkins

  548. would tell you

  549. the Christian faith

  550. is not about

  551. believing in the absence

  552. of evidence

  553. or even in the teeth

  554. of evidence

  555. the Christian faith

  556. is about believing

  557. someone

  558. trusting someone

  559. who has shown himself

  560. to be trustworthy

  561. trusting someone

  562. who has shown himself

  563. to be trustworthy

  564. not just believing

  565. wishful thinking

  566. I suppose at this point

  567. another question

  568. might come into our heads

  569. well it's alright

  570. for then

  571. it's alright

  572. for these people

  573. in Jerusalem

  574. 2000 years ago

  575. but what's that

  576. got to do

  577. with my life today

  578. what's that got to do

  579. with me

  580. when I live in

  581. what Russell Brown

  582. described as

  583. a broken world

  584. well to understand

  585. why this is good news

  586. we need to look now

  587. at Jesus' explanation

  588. of what had happened

  589. and then the invitation

  590. he makes

  591. off the back

  592. of that explanation

  593. so let's look at the explanation

  594. in verses 44 to 46

  595. then Jesus said

  596. when I was with you

  597. before

  598. that is before he died

  599. I told you

  600. that everything

  601. written about me

  602. in the law of Moses

  603. and the prophets

  604. and the Psalms

  605. must be fulfilled

  606. then he opened their minds

  607. to understand the scriptures

  608. and he said

  609. yes it was written

  610. long ago

  611. that the Messiah

  612. would suffer

  613. and die

  614. and rise from the dead

  615. on the third day

  616. now what's that

  617. what in the world

  618. is that about

  619. what's the law

  620. of Moses

  621. and the prophets

  622. and the Psalms

  623. Jesus is talking about

  624. what we call

  625. the Old Testament

  626. the Hebrew scriptures

  627. the Old Testament

  628. the first part

  629. of the Bible

  630. now I don't know

  631. what you think

  632. about the Bible

  633. many people think

  634. the Bible

  635. is just a whole bunch

  636. of myths

  637. put together

  638. or maybe it's

  639. a rule book

  640. for life

  641. or maybe it's

  642. a nice

  643. religious teaching

  644. to give us

  645. a philosophy

  646. the Bible

  647. isn't really

  648. any of those things

  649. primarily

  650. the Bible

  651. is God's word

  652. to us

  653. and it's a story

  654. it's a great

  655. rescue story

  656. it's a great

  657. rescue story

  658. or a great

  659. love story

  660. which is about

  661. rescue if you like

  662. and like any

  663. classic heroic

  664. rescue story

  665. it starts with

  666. everything being

  667. good

  668. God made a

  669. perfect world

  670. where everyone

  671. was happy

  672. and then

  673. disaster strikes

  674. and everything

  675. goes wrong

  676. in the Bible

  677. that's

  678. the disaster

  679. is people

  680. turning away

  681. from God

  682. people no longer

  683. treating God

  684. as ruler

  685. in his world

  686. but the story

  687. doesn't end there

  688. because it's a

  689. rescue story

  690. because God

  691. loves his world

  692. he loves what

  693. he's made

  694. and he's committed

  695. to it

  696. and so the

  697. Old Testament

  698. is full of

  699. promises

  700. of God

  701. coming to

  702. fix what

  703. was broken

  704. that one day

  705. God would

  706. mend what

  707. we had

  708. corrupted

  709. that one day

  710. the creator

  711. would come

  712. and put back

  713. everything

  714. we'd unraveled

  715. and Jesus

  716. says

  717. that is

  718. fulfilled

  719. in him

  720. in what

  721. he had

  722. done

  723. now there

  724. are two

  725. things I want

  726. to say briefly

  727. about that

  728. why does it

  729. matter that

  730. Jesus was

  731. fulfilling

  732. everything that

  733. happened in

  734. the Old Testament

  735. well it tells

  736. us two things

  737. at least

  738. first of all

  739. it tells us

  740. we cannot say

  741. that God

  742. doesn't care

  743. about us

  744. we cannot say

  745. God doesn't

  746. care about

  747. his world

  748. because there

  749. in the Bible

  750. we read this

  751. record of promises

  752. that he'd come

  753. and deal

  754. with the pain

  755. deal with death

  756. deal with the

  757. brokenness

  758. deal with the

  759. dysfunction

  760. and the disease

  761. and the sadness

  762. we cannot say

  763. God doesn't

  764. care

  765. if he's fulfilled

  766. those promises

  767. and we also

  768. cannot say

  769. that God

  770. isn't powerful

  771. some people say

  772. there's suffering

  773. in the world

  774. because God

  775. doesn't care

  776. or because God

  777. isn't powerful

  778. not true

  779. he's powerful

  780. enough to keep

  781. his promises

  782. we all know

  783. how hard that is

  784. don't we

  785. and if we're

  786. in any doubt

  787. I had two

  788. election manifesto

  789. things on my

  790. table this morning

  791. as I was having

  792. my lunch

  793. promises from

  794. the Tories

  795. promises from

  796. labour

  797. tick when we've

  798. kept our

  799. pledges

  800. oh yeah

  801. right

  802. because it's

  803. very

  804. we're the best

  805. will in the

  806. world

  807. it's very hard

  808. to keep promises

  809. isn't it

  810. but God is

  811. powerful enough

  812. we cannot say

  813. he doesn't care

  814. we cannot say

  815. he's not powerful

  816. he has done

  817. everything he said

  818. and that leads

  819. us on to

  820. Jesus' invitation

  821. that's his

  822. explanation of

  823. what's happened

  824. look at his

  825. invitation

  826. verse 46

  827. he says

  828. yes it was

  829. written long ago

  830. that the Messiah

  831. God's king

  832. would suffer

  833. and die

  834. and rise

  835. from the dead

  836. on the third

  837. day

  838. it was also

  839. written that

  840. this message

  841. here comes the

  842. invitation

  843. would be

  844. proclaimed in

  845. the authority

  846. of his name

  847. to all the

  848. nations

  849. beginning in

  850. Jerusalem

  851. there is

  852. forgiveness

  853. of sins

  854. for all

  855. who repent

  856. you are

  857. witnesses

  858. of all these

  859. things

  860. do you hear

  861. the invitation

  862. it's an invitation

  863. for everyone

  864. for the whole

  865. world

  866. it's an invitation

  867. to receive

  868. forgiveness

  869. of sins

  870. in the

  871. authority

  872. of Jesus

  873. who died

  874. and rose

  875. again

  876. now at this

  877. point you

  878. might be

  879. thinking well

  880. sins so

  881. what

  882. we've got two

  883. completely wrong

  884. ideas about

  885. sins haven't we

  886. sometimes in

  887. popular culture

  888. at least

  889. sin is a little

  890. bit of naughty

  891. indulgence

  892. so sin this

  893. Easter will be

  894. eating too

  895. much chocolate

  896. but that's not

  897. what the Bible

  898. describes as sin

  899. on the other

  900. hand we can

  901. go to the

  902. other extreme

  903. can't we

  904. so you know

  905. sin is

  906. Jimmy Savile

  907. and all that

  908. terrible child

  909. abuse

  910. sin is

  911. what IS

  912. are doing

  913. to people

  914. in Iraq

  915. and Syria

  916. and even

  917. Libya

  918. sin is

  919. those terrible

  920. things

  921. I'm not like

  922. that

  923. but the Bible

  924. says that

  925. that's not how

  926. the Bible

  927. talks about sin

  928. it's not some

  929. little thing

  930. that doesn't

  931. matter

  932. it's not just

  933. horrible

  934. horrible

  935. horrendous

  936. things

  937. that other

  938. people do

  939. the Bible

  940. describes sin

  941. as the

  942. cause of all

  943. the problems

  944. in the world

  945. and it describes

  946. it essentially

  947. as ignoring

  948. God in the

  949. world he made

  950. or not

  951. treating God

  952. as ruler

  953. in the world

  954. he made

  955. some people

  956. do that

  957. by using

  958. God

  959. we all hate

  960. being used

  961. don't we

  962. some use

  963. God to

  964. try and

  965. control others

  966. some use

  967. God to try

  968. and boost

  969. their own

  970. self esteem

  971. or their own

  972. identity

  973. through their

  974. religious behaviour

  975. so some use

  976. God

  977. they don't

  978. treat him

  979. as ruler

  980. that way

  981. many other

  982. people ignore

  983. God

  984. and don't

  985. treat him

  986. as ruler

  987. in his world

  988. no I hate

  989. being used

  990. and ignored

  991. don't you

  992. a few years ago

  993. I was cycling

  994. home from work

  995. one day

  996. and cycling

  997. through Hampton

  998. Hill

  999. if you know

  1000. Hampton Hill

  1001. and I came to

  1002. some traffic

  1003. lights in the

  1004. middle of

  1005. Hampton Hill

  1006. High Street

  1007. and as I

  1008. cycled towards

  1009. them I noticed

  1010. three things

  1011. first

  1012. there were red

  1013. traffic going

  1014. in my direction

  1015. second

  1016. the pedestrian

  1017. crossing going

  1018. in my direction

  1019. was green

  1020. that meant

  1021. it was safe

  1022. to go over

  1023. the red lights

  1024. on my bike

  1025. because I knew

  1026. no traffic was

  1027. going to come

  1028. third

  1029. I noticed a policeman

  1030. standing on the

  1031. opposite side

  1032. of the junction

  1033. but the thought

  1034. went through my mind

  1035. it's safe

  1036. it's not going to

  1037. harm anyone

  1038. the policeman

  1039. will understand

  1040. so I ignored

  1041. the policeman

  1042. there

  1043. I ignored the

  1044. red light

  1045. and went straight

  1046. through it

  1047. as soon as I

  1048. done

  1049. and he stepped

  1050. out

  1051. waved me down

  1052. with his hand

  1053. I said

  1054. oh no

  1055. so I said

  1056. yes officer

  1057. did you see

  1058. the red light

  1059. there sir

  1060. yes officer

  1061. do you have

  1062. a driving

  1063. licence sir

  1064. yes officer

  1065. so you know

  1066. what a red

  1067. light means

  1068. then sir

  1069. yes officer

  1070. did you see

  1071. me standing

  1072. here sir

  1073. yes officer

  1074. what's the

  1075. world coming

  1076. to

  1077. you saw

  1078. me standing

  1079. here

  1080. a police

  1081. officer

  1082. and you

  1083. still went

  1084. through the

  1085. red light

  1086. of course

  1087. he's absolutely

  1088. right isn't

  1089. it

  1090. what is the

  1091. world coming

  1092. to

  1093. if everyone

  1094. sees the

  1095. rightful

  1096. authority

  1097. standing there

  1098. on the street

  1099. corner

  1100. and still

  1101. disobeys traffic

  1102. laws

  1103. it'd be

  1104. carnage

  1105. on the road

  1106. it'd be

  1107. gridlock

  1108. out there

  1109. on Broadway

  1110. but yet

  1111. that's a

  1112. picture of

  1113. our world

  1114. where does

  1115. the carnage

  1116. come from

  1117. where does

  1118. death and

  1119. disease and

  1120. breakdown

  1121. and envy

  1122. and hatred

  1123. where does it

  1124. all come from

  1125. it comes to

  1126. the fact we

  1127. ignore God

  1128. the rightful

  1129. ruler in

  1130. the world

  1131. he made

  1132. and like me

  1133. going through

  1134. that traffic

  1135. lights

  1136. we can

  1137. rationalise it

  1138. for ourselves

  1139. I'm alright

  1140. I'm not that

  1141. bad

  1142. I'm not

  1143. hurting anyone

  1144. God will

  1145. understand

  1146. he knows

  1147. I'm a nice

  1148. person

  1149. so we try

  1150. and rationalise

  1151. it but

  1152. actually

  1153. we're ignoring

  1154. God like I

  1155. was ignoring

  1156. that police

  1157. officer

  1158. he is there

  1159. for our good

  1160. and we

  1161. ignore him

  1162. he is the

  1163. rightful ruler

  1164. and that's

  1165. why the

  1166. world is

  1167. in a mess

  1168. that is

  1169. why we

  1170. live in a

  1171. broken world

  1172. to use

  1173. Russell Brand's

  1174. line again

  1175. and we're

  1176. all in that

  1177. boat

  1178. naturally

  1179. we all

  1180. use or

  1181. ignore God

  1182. in different

  1183. ways

  1184. that's why

  1185. we all need

  1186. what Jesus

  1187. invites us to

  1188. here in

  1189. verse 47

  1190. there is

  1191. forgiveness

  1192. of sins

  1193. for all who

  1194. repent

  1195. Jesus paid

  1196. for sin

  1197. by dying

  1198. on the cross

  1199. the one

  1200. innocent person

  1201. who'd ever

  1202. lived

  1203. died in

  1204. place of

  1205. others

  1206. so if we

  1207. will repent

  1208. trust in

  1209. him

  1210. then we

  1211. can be

  1212. forgiven

  1213. too

  1214. now that

  1215. word repent

  1216. means to

  1217. turn around

  1218. to go the

  1219. other way

  1220. instead of

  1221. living for

  1222. ourselves

  1223. to say

  1224. no Jesus

  1225. is king

  1226. I'm going to

  1227. live under

  1228. his rule

  1229. instead

  1230. Jesus died

  1231. so we

  1232. didn't have

  1233. to

  1234. Jesus rose

  1235. to life

  1236. again

  1237. to show

  1238. that one

  1239. day the

  1240. brokenness

  1241. can be

  1242. fully

  1243. mended

  1244. there can be

  1245. wholeness

  1246. again

  1247. because God's

  1248. rescue is

  1249. complete

  1250. this is his

  1251. invitation

  1252. this is why

  1253. it's good

  1254. news

  1255. to all of us

  1256. who are in

  1257. trouble

  1258. to all of us

  1259. who face

  1260. God's right

  1261. judgment

  1262. for our

  1263. rebellion

  1264. for our

  1265. ignoring

  1266. and using

  1267. him

  1268. Jesus says

  1269. I have

  1270. paid the

  1271. price

  1272. come

  1273. believe in

  1274. me

  1275. turn around

  1276. and you can

  1277. have life

  1278. and forgiveness

  1279. and the hope

  1280. of the brokenness

  1281. being mended

  1282. and you see

  1283. again

  1284. how these

  1285. disciples

  1286. attitudes

  1287. emotions

  1288. were changed

  1289. during this

  1290. whole encounter

  1291. they started

  1292. off fearful

  1293. they started

  1294. off grieving

  1295. when Jesus

  1296. was dead

  1297. they then

  1298. moved to

  1299. cynicism

  1300. he can't

  1301. really be

  1302. alive

  1303. to doubting

  1304. is this

  1305. real

  1306. and if you

  1307. turn over

  1308. to the very

  1309. last page

  1310. well not the

  1311. very last page

  1312. of the gospel

  1313. account

  1314. page 22

  1315. those last

  1316. lines

  1317. what happened

  1318. after Jesus

  1319. had gone back

  1320. to heaven

  1321. verse 52

  1322. so they

  1323. worshipped him

  1324. and returned

  1325. to Jerusalem

  1326. filled with

  1327. great joy

  1328. hopelessness

  1329. despair

  1330. grief

  1331. fear

  1332. turned to

  1333. joy

  1334. why

  1335. because Jesus

  1336. is alive

  1337. that's the

  1338. invitation he

  1339. makes to us

  1340. I'm going to

  1341. pray for us

  1342. we've got a few

  1343. minutes for

  1344. questions before

  1345. everyone has to

  1346. run off and leave

  1347. let's pray

  1348. heavenly father

  1349. we thank you

  1350. that you love

  1351. a broken world

  1352. so much

  1353. you came in

  1354. the person of

  1355. your son

  1356. god the son

  1357. came to put it

  1358. right
