  1. If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you.

  2. ! If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, but make allowance for their doubting too.

  3. If you can wait to not be tired by waiting, or being lied about, don't deal in lies,

  4. or being hated, don't give way to hating, and yet don't look too good nor talk too wise.

  5. If you can dream and not make dreams your master, if you can think and not make thoughts your aim,

  6. if you can meet with triumph and disaster and treat those two imposters just the same,

  7. if you can bear to hear the truth you have spoken, twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

  8. or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, and stoop and build them up with worn out tools,

  9. if you can make one heap of all your winnings and risk it all on one turn of pitch and toss,

  10. and lose and start again at your beginnings and never breathe a word about your loss,

  11. if you can force your heart and nerve and sinew to serve your turn long after they are gone,

  12. and so hold on when there is nothing in you except the will which says to them, hold on.

  13. If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, or walk with kings nor lose the common touch,

  14. if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, if all men count with you but none too much,

  15. if you can fill the unforgiving minute with sixty seconds worth of distance run,

  16. yours is the earth and everything in it, and which is more, you'll be a man, my son.

  17. So reads Rudyard Kipling's famous poem, If, penned in 1895.

  18. It's quite a moving poem, isn't it?

  19. The words of a father to a son as he presents his son with the various challenges of life

  20. and exhorts him to face them with courage and wisdom, humility and valour.

  21. The whole poem turns on that one word, if, if, if, if.

  22. It's how the father begins nearly every other line,

  23. as he entertains the possibility that his son might just be able to grow up and perform well.

  24. And if he does, well, yours is the earth and everything in it.

  25. And what's more, you'll be a man, my son.

  26. I wonder if you see the worldview behind Kipling's poem.

  27. It's the worldview of Greek stoicism, the stiff upper lip in the face of life's trials.

  28. It's the worldview of secular humanism, the self trusting itself and exerting itself to achieve mature manhood.

  29. That one phrase is heard throughout,

  30. if you can, if you can, if you can.

  31. And modern humanism chants in the background to the young man,

  32. yes, you can, yes, you can, yes, you can.

  33. But do you see the problem?

  34. If what we saw this morning is true,

  35. then the solution to the problems that plague our humanity do not lie within ourselves.

  36. That's the false gospel of humanism.

  37. The solution to our problems lie outside ourselves in the person of Jesus Christ, the proper man.

  38. The good news of Christianity hangs on the shoulders of the person of Jesus Christ.

  39. And one of the best insights into his humanity are his temptations.

  40. When he faced the hardest tests of his life,

  41. when he faced the biggest challenge of his life,

  42. a fight with the devil himself.

  43. But if we want to understand Jesus' temptations properly,

  44. then we must understand them in the whole context of the Bible.

  45. When Jesus faces the devil here in the wilderness,

  46. there are two shadowy figures from the Old Testament looking on.

  47. To put it in more theatrical terms,

  48. the drama of Jesus versus the devil unfolds on the front stage

  49. with two figures painted into the backdrop of that stage.

  50. In the narrative, Jesus is front stage.

  51. If you look with me at chapter 3, verse 21 and 22,

  52. we'll see that Jesus is front stage.

  53. Now when all the people were baptized and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying,

  54. the heavens were opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove.

  55. And a voice came from heaven,

  56. You are my beloved Son, with you I am well pleased.

  57. So Jesus is affirmed as God's Son, that's obvious enough.

  58. But now look at chapter 3, verse 23.

  59. Jesus, when he began the ministry, was about 30 years of age,

  60. being the son, as was supposed, of Joseph, the son of Heli.

  61. And then it gives the genealogy of Jesus.

  62. Just glance all the way down there, and you come all the way down to verse 38.

  63. The son of Enos, the son of Seth, the son of Adam,

  64. the son of God.

  65. This genealogy is not actually needed.

  66. If you read from verse 22,

  67. it flows perfectly right into chapter 4, verse 1.

  68. You are my beloved Son, with you I am well pleased.

  69. Chapter 4, verse 1.

  70. And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan

  71. and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness.

  72. There is no need to put the genealogy in here.

  73. So the question is, why does Luke put it here?

  74. Why not put it at the beginning of his gospel, as Matthew does?

  75. Or in the birth narrative in chapter 2?

  76. Why place it here, when he has just been baptized,

  77. and he is about to head into the wilderness?

  78. Well, look how it ends.

  79. The son of Adam, the son of God.

  80. Luke wants us to read this story of Jesus' temptations

  81. with Adam in the background.

  82. Adam is a son of God.

  83. And Luke wants us to watch Jesus' temptations

  84. unfold on the front stage,

  85. with the shadow of Adam on the backstage.

  86. Adam, the son of God, forms the backdrop to this drama.

  87. But there's a shadow of another son in the background as well.

  88. I wonder if you spotted him.

  89. Chapter 4, verse 1 and 2.

  90. And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan

  91. and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness

  92. for forty days, being tempted by the devil.

  93. And he ate nothing during those days.

  94. And when they were over, he was hungry.

  95. Who's the other son?

  96. Well, what do forty days in the wilderness,

  97. being led by God, remind you of?

  98. It's Israel in the desert for forty years,

  99. being led by God.

  100. And in Exodus chapter 4,

    Exodus 4 chapter mention

  101. Israel is called God's son.

  102. Moses goes to Pharaoh and says,

  103. God says, let my son go,

  104. that he might worship me.

  105. Israel is a son of God.

  106. And Luke has given us the location,

  107. wilderness, and the timing,

  108. forty days of Jesus' temptation,

  109. so that we watch this drama unfold

  110. with the shadow of Israel in the backdrop.

  111. So that's the drama we're watching on stage.

  112. It's not one son and the devil.

  113. It's three sons and the devil.

  114. Adam, the son of God.

  115. Israel, son of God.

  116. And Jesus, son of God.

  117. In 1975, my parents gave birth.

  118. No, sorry, they both didn't give birth.

  119. They were given a son.

  120. My mother gave birth.

  121. And as they held their first son in their arms

  122. in those early days,

  123. they were, I'm sure, saying to themselves,

  124. what kind of son will he be?

  125. Will he be an extrovert or an introvert?

  126. Will he be studious or sporty?

  127. And then in July 1977, I was born.

  128. And I'm sure they looked at me and said,

  129. what kind of a son will he be?

  130. Will he be like the first son that we had?

  131. Or will he be different?

  132. And then in November 1980,

  133. they had another son.

  134. I'm sure they looked at him and said,

  135. what kind of son will he be?

  136. Will he be like the first one?

  137. Or like the second one?

  138. Or will he be different?

  139. It's what parents do, don't they?

  140. They compare their children.

  141. This one's quiet.

  142. This one's loud.

  143. This one's chilled.

  144. Comparisons go on all the time.

  145. And it's the same as you read the Bible's storyline.

  146. It's a story of three sons.

  147. Adam, son of God.

  148. Israel, son of God.

  149. Jesus, son of God.

  150. And each time you meet each of the sons,

  151. you're asking yourself the question,

  152. what kind of a son is he?

  153. And in the case of Israel and Jesus,

  154. we say,

  155. will he be like the first son?

  156. Well, we saw this morning

  157. that Adam was a disobedient son.

  158. He chose to disobey his father's law

  159. and as a result, he was punished.

  160. He chose to worship a creature, the serpent,

  161. instead of the creator, God his father.

  162. In a garden paradise,

  163. the first son of God failed

  164. and received God's penalty of punishment

  165. and was removed from the garden.

  166. And it's the same with God's second son, Israel.

  167. At Sinai and in the wilderness,

  168. Israel proved to be a disobedient son.

  169. He was given food by God in the wilderness.

  170. Note the same theme of food.

  171. Both sons of God are given food.

  172. And yet he complained.

  173. And when God gave his law to his son,

  174. within days his son had broken the law

  175. by worshipping a creature,

  176. the golden calf,

  177. instead of his father.

  178. So God's first son, Adam,

  179. disobeyed and was punished.

  180. And God's second son, Israel,

  181. disobeyed and was punished.

  182. And now here is Jesus,

  183. God's son,

  184. and he's outside a garden paradise,

  185. in a desert,

  186. being tempted by the devil.

  187. And the question is,

  188. what kind of a son

  189. is he going to be?

  190. Now God,

  191. we've seen in chapter 3, verse 22,

  192. tells us what kind of a son he is.

  193. This is my beloved son.

  194. With him,

  195. I am well pleased.

  196. But while the father may think

  197. he is special and good,

  198. he hasn't really been tested yet,

  199. has he?

  200. It's one thing to affirm something

  201. about your son,

  202. it's quite another to see the evidence.

  203. Parents do this all the time.

  204. We talk up our children

  205. in ways that are exaggerated

  206. and less to do with reality.

  207. There's often more pretense

  208. behind what we say about our children

  209. than there is performance.

  210. Well, God the father

  211. doesn't want to just to be seen,

  212. to talk up his son.

  213. He also wants his son

  214. to prove himself to us.

  215. Did you notice the double reference

  216. to the spirit in verses 1 and 2?

  217. Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit,

  218. was led by the spirit

  219. into the wilderness.

  220. The devil is not the prime agent here.

  221. He is an intermediary agent

  222. in the temptations.

  223. Yes, he is the prime agent

  224. who brings the temptations

  225. because God cannot

  226. and does not tempt.

  227. And yet the whole scenario

  228. is set up by God.

  229. Jesus is led,

  230. not by the serpent,

  231. not by Satan,

  232. into the wilderness.

  233. He's led by the spirit

  234. into the wilderness.

  235. This is a test from God.

  236. Just as Adam was tested

  237. in the garden

  238. to see what was in his heart,

  239. and just as Israel

  240. was tested in the wilderness

  241. to see what was in his heart,

  242. so God tests Jesus

  243. outside a garden,

  244. in a wilderness,

  245. to see what is in his heart.

  246. God tested each of his three sons

  247. to see what controlled

  248. their wills,

  249. to see if they loved him

  250. with heart and soul

  251. and mind and strength.

  252. And in this passage,

  253. Luke shows us

  254. that Jesus does indeed

  255. live up to God's affirmation

  256. in chapter 3.

  257. He shows us this in four ways,

  258. three in this story

  259. and one at the end

  260. of the gospel

  261. that we'll look at.

  262. Number one,

  263. Luke presents Jesus as,

  264. first,

  265. a son who depends

  266. on God wholly.

  267. A son who depends

  268. on God wholly.

  269. Chapter 4,

  270. verse 2 to 4.

  271. He was being tempted

  272. for 40 days

  273. by the devil

  274. and he ate nothing

  275. during those days

  276. and when they were over

  277. he was hungry.

  278. The devil said to him,

  279. If you are the son of God,

  280. command this stone

  281. to become bread.

  282. And Jesus answered him,

  283. It is written,

  284. Man shall not live

  285. by bread alone.

  286. Now Jesus wasn't

  287. Clark Kent.

  288. He wasn't Superman,

  289. that person who appeared

  290. to be like a man

  291. but we know

  292. that he wasn't a man.

  293. Jesus' humanity

  294. was not a foil

  295. for who he really was.

  296. He was God

  297. but he wasn't really

  298. a human being.

  299. That kind of teaching

  300. is what's called

  301. docetism

  302. from the Greek word

  303. docetio

  304. to think,

  305. to seem.

  306. It was an early church heresy.

  307. The idea was that

  308. Jesus was God,

  309. yes,

  310. but he wasn't really a man.

  311. He just seemed

  312. to be a man

  313. in people's eyes.

  314. But we must get rid

  315. of any docetism in us.

  316. Jesus

  317. was truly God

  318. and truly man.

  319. And

  320. he was starving

  321. for 40 days,

  322. hungry,

  323. fasted for 40 days

  324. and at the end

  325. he was quite literally

  326. starving.

  327. Verse 3.

  328. He was hungry.

  329. And the devil says to him,

  330. If you are the son of man,

  331. command this stone

  332. to become bread.

  333. There's the temptation.

  334. He has not eaten

  335. for 40 days.

  336. Now the word

  337. if

  338. can be a little bit

  339. misleading.

  340. It's not a statement

  341. of doubt.

  342. Satan knows exactly

  343. who Jesus is.

  344. That's why he's

  345. tempting him.

  346. It's really

  347. translated,

  348. or better translated,

  349. since,

  350. since,

  351. if it is true,

  352. you are the son of God,

  353. then,

  354. turn stones

  355. into bread.

  356. Satan's not doubting

  357. Jesus' sonship.

  358. He's assuming it

  359. and asking him

  360. to prove it.

  361. Now what could

  362. possibly be wrong

  363. for Jesus

  364. to have a wee nibble

  365. on a bit of granite

  366. come whole wheat

  367. bread?

  368. I mean,

  369. later in the gospel,

  370. doesn't he feed

  371. 5,000 people

  372. by multiplying

  373. bread?

  374. So I mean,

  375. come on Jesus,

  376. treat yourself

  377. the wee bit

  378. of granite loaf.

  379. What could be

  380. possibly wrong

  381. with that?

  382. You will use

  383. your power

  384. to feed others.

  385. Why not use your power

  386. to feed yourself?

  387. So the question is,

  388. what is wrong

  389. with turning stones

  390. into bread?

  391. I mean,

  392. come on.

  393. He turns water

  394. into wine?

  395. Well,

  396. it's this.

  397. Satan

  398. is tempting

  399. Jesus to act

  400. independently

  401. of his father

  402. and to provide

  403. for himself

  404. independently

  405. from his father.

  406. Do as you please

  407. when you please.

  408. Are you hungry,

  409. Jesus?

  410. Have some

  411. lime rock

  412. come loaf.

  413. It's a test

  414. of dependence

  415. on God

  416. versus

  417. independence

  418. from God.

  419. Satan challenges

  420. him to prove

  421. his sonship

  422. through independent

  423. thinking

  424. and acting.

  425. For Jesus

  426. to turn stones

  427. into bread,

  428. he would have

  429. to act

  430. independently

  431. from God

  432. instead of

  433. being dependent

  434. on God,

  435. waiting for

  436. his father's

  437. provision.

  438. salvation.

  439. It's exactly

  440. what Adam

  441. was tested

  442. with in the

  443. garden.

  444. He was tested

  445. with a fast

  446. just as Jesus

  447. is tested

  448. with a fast.

  449. That was the

  450. sin of Adam.

  451. God gave him

  452. every tree

  453. to eat from

  454. except one.

  455. God showed

  456. himself to Adam

  457. to be

  458. a God

  459. of abundant

  460. provision

  461. for his creatures.

  462. you can eat

  463. from any

  464. tree

  465. except one.

  466. But Adam

  467. chose to live

  468. not dependent

  469. on God

  470. and on his

  471. provision

  472. but independent

  473. on his own

  474. provision,

  475. the forbidden

  476. fruit.

  477. And in so doing

  478. he made God

  479. look like a

  480. scrooge.

  481. He made God

  482. look tight

  483. and stingy.

  484. That was the

  485. sin of Israel

  486. in the desert,

  487. wasn't it?

  488. Also,

  489. God provided

  490. daily manna

  491. every day

  492. and yet by

  493. grumbling

  494. and complaining

  495. about the

  496. food,

  497. they refused

  498. to live

  499. dependently

  500. on God's

  501. provision.

  502. Israel even

  503. contemplated

  504. returning to

  505. Egypt to

  506. live in their

  507. own provisions.

  508. Their grumbling

  509. was an expression

  510. of not living

  511. dependently

  512. on God.

  513. They made

  514. God look

  515. tight and

  516. stingy as if

  517. he didn't

  518. provide for

  519. his son.

  520. And in each

  521. case the devil

  522. was saying to

  523. Adam and

  524. Israel,

  525. and now to

  526. Jesus,

  527. God's tight.

  528. He doesn't

  529. have your best

  530. interests at

  531. heart.

  532. He doesn't

  533. provide for

  534. his sons.

  535. Act

  536. independently.

  537. Take the

  538. fruit.

  539. Provide for

  540. yourself.

  541. Eat the

  542. fruit.

  543. Return to

  544. Egypt where

  545. we sat

  546. around fires

  547. and what

  548. do they

  549. say?

  550. We ate

  551. lamb from

  552. the pots.

  553. It's all

  554. about food.

  555. It's all

  556. about provision.

  557. Will God

  558. provide for

  559. me or

  560. not?

  561. Well,

  562. Jesus'

  563. response

  564. reveals that

  565. this temptation

  566. is all

  567. about trustful

  568. dependence on

  569. God.

  570. Verse 4,

  571. And Jesus

  572. answered,

  573. It is

  574. written,

  575. Man shall

  576. not live

  577. by bread

  578. alone.

  579. Man shall

  580. not be

  581. dependent

  582. on bread

  583. alone.

  584. The quote

  585. is from

  586. the Old

  587. Testament.

  588. Now,

  589. when there

  590. are quotes

  591. of the Old

  592. Testament and

  593. the New

  594. Testament,

  595. you've got

  596. to,

  597. here's another

  598. picture for

  599. your mind,

  600. you've got to

  601. think of an

  602. iceberg.

  603. Okay?

  604. What do you

  605. see in the

  606. sea when you

  607. see an iceberg?

  608. Well,

  609. you see the

  610. tip of it

  611. coming up

  612. over the

  613. sea,

  614. but what's

  615. underneath?

  616. They say at

  617. least two

  618. thirds or

  619. more is

  620. underneath the

  621. surface.

  622. And Old

  623. Testament quotes

  624. in the New

  625. Testament are a

  626. bit like the

  627. icebergs.

  628. The bit

  629. that's quoted

  630. is the bit

  631. above the

  632. surface.

  633. But there's a

  634. whole bit

  635. below the

  636. surface that

  637. sort of

  638. comes with

  639. it.

  640. That is,

  641. they might

  642. quote a

  643. line from

  644. the Old

  645. Testament,

  646. but actually

  647. what comes

  648. with it is

  649. the whole

  650. chapter,

  651. okay,

  652. or the rest

  653. of the

  654. verse.

  655. And that's

  656. what's going

  657. on here.

  658. All Jesus

  659. says is,

  660. you man

  661. shall not

  662. live by

  663. bread alone.

  664. But we

  665. know if you

  666. go to

  667. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 8:3

  668. chapter 8

  669. verse 3,

  670. it goes on

  671. to say,

  672. but on

  673. every word

  674. that comes

  675. from the

  676. mouth of

  677. God.

  678. And by

  679. quoting just

  680. that section,

  681. Jesus means

  682. the whole

  683. thing.

  684. In other

  685. words,

  686. human life

  687. does not

  688. consist in

  689. simple

  690. dependence on

  691. food,

  692. but in

  693. total

  694. dependence on

  695. God's

  696. word.

  697. If you want

  698. to be a

  699. human being,

  700. this weekend,

  701. you can eat

  702. your food

  703. next door,

  704. but you have

  705. not exhibited

  706. true humanity,

  707. if that's all

  708. you do.

  709. true humanity

  710. is exhibited

  711. in total

  712. dependence

  713. on God's

  714. word.

  715. Adam

  716. chose to

  717. act

  718. independently

  719. of God.

  720. He took

  721. the forbidden

  722. fruit.

  723. Israel acted

  724. independently

  725. of God.

  726. They grumbled

  727. about the

  728. given food,

  729. but not so

  730. this son.

  731. He's different.

  732. Here is a

  733. son who

  734. depends on

  735. God

  736. wholly.

  737. Number two,

  738. a son who

  739. worships God

  740. only.

  741. A son who

  742. worships God

  743. only.

  744. Verses five

  745. to eight.

  746. And the devil

  747. took Jesus

  748. up and showed

  749. him all the

  750. kingdoms of

  751. the world

  752. in a moment

  753. of time and

  754. said to him,

  755. to you I

  756. will give

  757. all this

  758. authority

  759. and their

  760. glory,

  761. for it has

  762. been delivered

  763. to me,

  764. and I will

  765. give it to

  766. whom I will.

  767. If you

  768. then will

  769. worship me,

  770. it will

  771. all be

  772. yours.

  773. And Jesus

  774. answered him,

  775. it is written,

  776. you shall

  777. worship the

  778. Lord your

  779. God and

  780. serve him

  781. only.

  782. The temptation

  783. is a simple

  784. one.

  785. In order to

  786. receive all

  787. the kingdoms

  788. of the world,

  789. Jesus must

  790. worship Satan.

  791. There are

  792. echoes in

  793. verse six

  794. of Psalm

  795. chapter two

  796. verse eight

  797. and Daniel

  798. chapter seven

  799. verse fourteen.

  800. In verse six

  801. the word

  802. giving

  803. and I

  804. will give

  805. to you

  806. all the

  807. kingdoms.

  808. Psalm two

  809. verse eight

  810. ask me

  811. and I

  812. will give

  813. you the

  814. nations

  815. as your

  816. inheritance.

  817. And the

  818. reference to

  819. authority

  820. in verse six

  821. reflects Daniel

  822. seven

  823. verse fourteen.

  824. I saw in the

  825. night visions

  826. and behold

  827. with the clouds

  828. of heaven

  829. there came

  830. one like a

  831. son of man

  832. and he came

  833. to the

  834. ancient of

  835. days and

  836. was presented

  837. before him

  838. and to him

  839. was given

  840. authority

  841. and glory

  842. and a

  843. kingdom that

  844. all peoples

  845. nations and

  846. languages should

  847. serve him.

  848. His authority

  849. is an everlasting

  850. authority which

  851. shall not pass

  852. away.

  853. His kingdom

  854. one that

  855. shall not be

  856. destroyed.

  857. So think

  858. about it.

  859. Psalm two

  860. verse eight

  861. Daniel seven

  862. verse fourteen

  863. made clear that

  864. the kingdoms

  865. of the world

  866. would be

  867. given to

  868. God's son.

  869. It was just

  870. a matter of

  871. how he was

  872. going to

  873. get them.

  874. Would he

  875. take the

  876. shortcut here

  877. by worshipping

  878. Satan and

  879. receive all the

  880. kingdoms of the

  881. world or

  882. would he take

  883. the long

  884. course of

  885. suffering and

  886. obedience and

  887. then receive all

  888. the kingdoms of

  889. the earth.

  890. The father's

  891. will is the

  892. long course

  893. Satan's will

  894. is the short

  895. course.

  896. What Satan

  897. is trying to

  898. get Jesus

  899. to do

  900. here is

  901. to grasp

  902. for something

  903. before his

  904. time.

  905. He's trying

  906. in essence

  907. to destroy

  908. God.

  909. He's trying

  910. to get

  911. Jesus to

  912. snatch

  913. something from

  914. his father

  915. before his

  916. father's ready

  917. to give it

  918. to him.

  919. And Jesus

  920. responds in

  921. verse eight

  922. you shall

  923. worship the

  924. Lord your

  925. God and him

  926. only shall

  927. you serve.

  928. A quote

  929. from

  930. Deuteronomy

  931. six verse

  932. thirteen.

  933. Jesus chooses

  934. to worship

  935. God only.

  936. As God's

  937. son Adam

  938. exchanged the

  939. worship of his

  940. father for the

  941. worship of a

  942. creature,

  943. a serpent.

  944. As God's

  945. son Israel

  946. exchanged the

  947. worship of his

  948. father for the

  949. worship of another

  950. creature, a

  951. calf.

  952. As God's

  953. son Jesus

  954. is tempted to

  955. worship Satan

  956. but instead he

  957. worships his

  958. father only.

  959. and because of

  960. his loyalty

  961. he will be

  962. rewarded with

  963. sovereignty.

  964. Adam bowed

  965. the knee to

  966. a serpent,

  967. he was kicked

  968. out of the

  969. garden of

  970. paradise.

  971. Israel bowed

  972. the knee to

  973. a calf and

  974. later to the

  975. beals and he

  976. was later kicked

  977. out of the

  978. promised land.

  979. Jesus refuses

  980. to bow the

  981. knee to Satan

  982. and as a result

  983. he will be

  984. given this

  985. land and

  986. every land

  987. and all the

  988. kingdoms of

  989. the world.

  990. Here is a

  991. son who

  992. worships God

  993. only.

  994. Well Luke is

  995. showing us a

  996. son who depends

  997. on God

  998. wholly, a

  999. son who

  1000. worships God

  1001. only and

  1002. third a

  1003. son who

  1004. trusts God

  1005. completely

  1006. chapter 4

  1007. verse 9

  1008. to 12.

  1009. And he took

  1010. him to

  1011. Jerusalem and

  1012. set him on

  1013. the pinnacle

  1014. of the

  1015. temple and

  1016. said to

  1017. him if you

  1018. are the

  1019. son of

  1020. God throw

  1021. yourself down

  1022. from here

  1023. for it is

  1024. written he

  1025. will command

  1026. his angels

  1027. concerning you

  1028. to guard

  1029. you and

  1030. on their

  1031. hands they

  1032. will bear

  1033. you up lest

  1034. you strike

  1035. your foot

  1036. against a

  1037. stone.

  1038. And Jesus

  1039. answered him

  1040. it is said

  1041. you shall

  1042. not put the

  1043. Lord your

  1044. God to

  1045. the test.

  1046. Jesus has

  1047. quoted the

  1048. Bible,

  1049. Old Testament

  1050. to Satan

  1051. twice and

  1052. now Satan

  1053. tries his

  1054. own go at

  1055. a bit of

  1056. Bible memory

  1057. recitation.

  1058. He quotes

  1059. Satan

  1060. quotes

  1061. Psalm 91

  1062. a psalm

  1063. that promises

  1064. God's

  1065. protection for

  1066. those who

  1067. trust in

  1068. him.

  1069. If the

  1070. first temptation

  1071. was to test

  1072. God's

  1073. provision

  1074. this one

  1075. is about

  1076. testing God's

  1077. protection.

  1078. What Satan

  1079. is saying to

  1080. Jesus here is

  1081. let go and

  1082. let God.

  1083. Let go and

  1084. let God.

  1085. In a sense

  1086. Satan was

  1087. saying to

  1088. Jesus what

  1089. he said to

  1090. Adam.

  1091. You will

  1092. not

  1093. surely

  1094. die.

  1095. Jump off

  1096. the temple

  1097. you will

  1098. not

  1099. surely

  1100. die.

  1101. Won't

  1102. your

  1103. father

  1104. send you

  1105. the angels

  1106. to protect

  1107. you?

  1108. And the

  1109. reason he's

  1110. saying that

  1111. is because

  1112. of where

  1113. Jesus is

  1114. standing.

  1115. The temple

  1116. was a

  1117. symbol of

  1118. God's

  1119. presence.

  1120. If God

  1121. is going

  1122. to rescue

  1123. anyone it

  1124. will be

  1125. his son

  1126. whom he

  1127. loves and

  1128. if he's

  1129. going to

  1130. rescue his

  1131. son anywhere

  1132. it will

  1133. be on his

  1134. front doorstep

  1135. at the

  1136. temple.

  1137. He's

  1138. hardly about

  1139. to let

  1140. his son

  1141. die in

  1142. his own

  1143. home.

  1144. But the

  1145. problem with

  1146. Satan's

  1147. quote is

  1148. that it's

  1149. out of

  1150. context.

  1151. If you

  1152. flick back

  1153. with me to

  1154. Psalm 91.

  1155. Psalm 91.

  1156. Keep your

  1157. finger in

  1158. Luke 4.

  1159. Psalm 91

    Psalms 91:1

  1160. verse 1 and

  1161. 2.

  1162. He who

  1163. dwells in

  1164. the shelter

  1165. of the

  1166. Most High

  1167. will abide

  1168. in the

  1169. shadow of

  1170. the Almighty.

  1171. I will

  1172. say to

  1173. the Lord

  1174. my refuge

  1175. and my

  1176. fortress

  1177. my God

  1178. in whom

  1179. I trust.

  1180. Do you

  1181. see what

  1182. Psalm 91

  1183. is about?

  1184. It's about

  1185. those who

  1186. trust in

  1187. the Lord

  1188. for refuge

  1189. not about

  1190. those who

  1191. test the

  1192. Lord for

  1193. refuge.

  1194. Hence

  1195. why Jesus

  1196. quotes

  1197. Deuteronomy

  1198. 6.16

  1199. back in

  1200. Luke 4 and

  1201. says do

  1202. not test

  1203. the Lord

  1204. your God.

  1205. Again it's

  1206. not the full

  1207. quote it's

  1208. like that

  1209. iceberg it's

  1210. just the

  1211. tip and

  1212. when you

  1213. go and

  1214. you read

  1215. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 6:16

  1216. 6 verse

  1217. 16 it

  1218. says you

  1219. shall not

  1220. test the

  1221. Lord your

  1222. God as

  1223. you did

  1224. at Massa.

  1225. Now what

  1226. did Israel

  1227. do at

  1228. Massa?

  1229. Well in

  1230. Exodus 17

  1231. they said

  1232. this is

  1233. the Lord

  1234. among us

  1235. or not?

  1236. They were

  1237. complaining about

  1238. the water

  1239. and the bread

  1240. and they're

  1241. saying is he

  1242. with us

  1243. or not?

  1244. Where's

  1245. his presence?

  1246. Will he

  1247. really do

  1248. what he

  1249. said he

  1250. will do?

  1251. Provide for

  1252. us.

  1253. And that

  1254. was Satan's

  1255. temptation to

  1256. Jesus.

  1257. Test and

  1258. see if God

  1259. is really

  1260. with you.

  1261. Test and

  1262. see if he

  1263. is true to

  1264. his word

  1265. whether he

  1266. will be

  1267. your refuge

  1268. or not.

  1269. See if he

  1270. is your

  1271. father or

  1272. not.

  1273. But the

  1274. problem with

  1275. Satan's test

  1276. is that God

  1277. the father

  1278. is not the

  1279. one on

  1280. probation.

  1281. Jesus is.

  1282. And Jesus

  1283. resists the

  1284. temptation.

  1285. He trusts

  1286. his father's

  1287. protection.

  1288. He does

  1289. not test

  1290. his father's

  1291. protection.

  1292. He trusts

  1293. that his

  1294. father is

  1295. present and

  1296. will provide

  1297. for him in

  1298. due course.

  1299. He does

  1300. not test

  1301. his father's

  1302. presence.

  1303. Adam in

  1304. the garden

  1305. tested to

  1306. see if God

  1307. would do

  1308. what he

  1309. said he'd

  1310. do.

  1311. Punish

  1312. if they

  1313. ate from

  1314. the forbidden

  1315. tree.

  1316. Will we

  1317. really die

  1318. if we

  1319. eat from

  1320. this?

  1321. Israel in

  1322. the desert

  1323. tested to

  1324. see if God

  1325. would do

  1326. what he

  1327. said he'd

  1328. do.

  1329. Provide for

  1330. them by

  1331. being present

  1332. with them.

  1333. Is the

  1334. Lord among

  1335. us or not?

  1336. And Jesus

  1337. at the temple

  1338. does not

  1339. test if God

  1340. would do

  1341. what he said

  1342. he'd do.

  1343. Protect

  1344. him.

  1345. Rather he

  1346. trusts that

  1347. God will

  1348. protect him

  1349. because he

  1350. trusts that

  1351. God is with

  1352. him.

  1353. Here is a

  1354. son who

  1355. trusts God

  1356. completely.

  1357. So we've

  1358. seen that

  1359. Jesus has

  1360. passed the

  1361. test three

  1362. times.

  1363. A son who

  1364. depends on

  1365. God

  1366. wholly,

  1367. a son who

  1368. worships God

  1369. only,

  1370. and a son

  1371. who trusts

  1372. God

  1373. completely.

  1374. But this

  1375. was not

  1376. Jesus' last

  1377. temptation.

  1378. Did you

  1379. notice that

  1380. in verse

  1381. 13?

  1382. And when the

  1383. devil had

  1384. ended every

  1385. temptation,

  1386. he departed

  1387. from him

  1388. until an

  1389. opportune

  1390. time.

  1391. When was

  1392. that opportune

  1393. time?

  1394. Well, we

  1395. know the

  1396. Pharisees were

  1397. children of

  1398. the devil who

  1399. constantly

  1400. attacked Jesus.

  1401. We have the

  1402. incident where

  1403. Peter tries to

  1404. stop Jesus

  1405. going to the

  1406. cross and

  1407. Jesus says,

  1408. get behind

  1409. me,

  1410. Satan.

  1411. But Satan

  1412. returns with

  1413. his most

  1414. forceful

  1415. temptation

  1416. during Jesus'

  1417. passion.

  1418. In Luke

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  1419. chapter 22,

  1420. we read that

  1421. Satan enters

  1422. Judas Iscariot

  1423. just before the

  1424. Last Supper,

  1425. and then Judas

  1426. goes out into

  1427. the night

  1428. to betray

  1429. Jesus.

  1430. Jesus'

  1431. last temptation

  1432. is one

  1433. long,

  1434. extended

  1435. temptation

  1436. that lasts

  1437. from

  1438. Gethsemane

  1439. till Golgotha.

  1440. I want you

  1441. to come with

  1442. me and let

  1443. us see this

  1444. temptation.

  1445. Luke 22,

    Luke 22:39

  1446. verse 39.

  1447. And Jesus

  1448. came out

  1449. and went,

  1450. as was his

  1451. custom,

  1452. to the

  1453. Mount of Olives.

  1454. And the

  1455. disciples

  1456. followed him.

  1457. And when he

  1458. came to

  1459. the place,

  1460. he said

  1461. to them,

  1462. Pray that

  1463. you may

  1464. not enter

  1465. into

  1466. temptation.

  1467. The place

  1468. is the

  1469. garden

  1470. of

  1471. Gethsemane.

  1472. And he

  1473. withdrew with

  1474. them about

  1475. a stone's

  1476. throw and

  1477. knelt down

  1478. and prayed,

  1479. saying,

  1480. Father,

  1481. if you

  1482. are willing,

  1483. remove this

  1484. cup from

  1485. me.

  1486. Nevertheless,

  1487. not my

  1488. will,

  1489. but yours

  1490. be done.

  1491. And there

  1492. appeared to

  1493. him an

  1494. angel from

  1495. heaven,

  1496. strengthening

  1497. him.

  1498. And being

  1499. in an

  1500. agony,

  1501. he prayed

  1502. more

  1503. earnestly,

  1504. and his

  1505. sweat

  1506. became like

  1507. great drops

  1508. of blood

  1509. falling down

  1510. to the

  1511. ground.

  1512. And when

  1513. he rose

  1514. from prayer,

  1515. he said to

  1516. the disciples,

  1517. he came to

  1518. the disciples

  1519. and found

  1520. them sleeping

  1521. for sorrow,

  1522. and he said

  1523. to them,

  1524. Why are you

  1525. sleeping?

  1526. Rise and

  1527. pray that

  1528. you may

  1529. not enter

  1530. into

  1531. temptation.

  1532. Do you

  1533. note the

  1534. theme of

  1535. temptation?

  1536. verse 40,

  1537. pray that

  1538. you may

  1539. not enter

  1540. into

  1541. temptation.

  1542. Verse 46,

  1543. pray that

  1544. you may

  1545. not enter

  1546. into

  1547. temptation.

  1548. Verse 42,

  1549. Father,

  1550. if you

  1551. are

  1552. willing,

  1553. remove

  1554. this cup

  1555. from me.

  1556. I just

  1557. want to

  1558. pause there.

  1559. we're so

  1560. used to

  1561. reading the

  1562. final words,

  1563. but not

  1564. my will

  1565. be done,

  1566. but yours,

  1567. that we

  1568. skip over

  1569. those first

  1570. words.

  1571. If you

  1572. are willing,

  1573. Father,

  1574. please

  1575. take

  1576. this

  1577. cup

  1578. from me.

  1579. Do you

  1580. see that?

  1581. Jesus

  1582. Christ

  1583. wanted

  1584. to walk

  1585. away

  1586. from the

  1587. cross.

  1588. He was

  1589. in

  1590. turmoil.

  1591. He was

  1592. in

  1593. anguish.

  1594. He had

  1595. convulsive

  1596. fear.

  1597. As John

  1598. Calvin put

  1599. it,

  1600. in

  1601. Gethsemane,

  1602. Jesus

  1603. trembled

  1604. at death.

  1605. What he

  1606. was about

  1607. to go

  1608. through on

  1609. the cross,

  1610. crucifixion,

  1611. but more,

  1612. far more,

  1613. the black

  1614. hole of

  1615. God's

  1616. wrath.

  1617. It

  1618. brought him

  1619. to within

  1620. a

  1621. hair's

  1622. breath

  1623. of a

  1624. nervous

  1625. breakdown.

  1626. What

  1627. this

  1628. perfect

  1629. son

  1630. saw

  1631. in

  1632. Gethsemane

  1633. was his

  1634. father

  1635. with the

  1636. sword

  1637. raised.

  1638. So much

  1639. so that

  1640. God had to

  1641. send an

  1642. angel from

  1643. heaven.

  1644. Did you

  1645. notice that

  1646. in verse

  1647. 43?

  1648. And there

  1649. appeared an

  1650. angel from

  1651. heaven.

  1652. Why?

  1653. To

  1654. strengthen

  1655. him.

  1656. God

  1657. had to

  1658. send an

  1659. angel from

  1660. heaven to

  1661. strengthen

  1662. Jesus so

  1663. that he

  1664. would go to

  1665. the cross.

  1666. He was

  1667. that close

  1668. to wanting

  1669. to pull

  1670. out.

  1671. And after

  1672. the angel

  1673. strengthens him,

  1674. he continues

  1675. in anguish so

  1676. that his

  1677. sweat is

  1678. like drops

  1679. of blood

  1680. dropping from

  1681. him.

  1682. This is

  1683. surely what

  1684. Hebrews 5

  1685. or 7 means

  1686. when it

  1687. says that

  1688. Jesus offered

  1689. up loud

  1690. cries and

  1691. tears to

  1692. his father.

  1693. Here was

  1694. a man in

  1695. anguish and

  1696. turmoil on

  1697. the brink of

  1698. a breakdown.

  1699. Donald

  1700. Macleod writes

  1701. movingly,

  1702. the wonder of

  1703. the love of

  1704. Christ for

  1705. his people is

  1706. not that for

  1707. their sakes he

  1708. faced death

  1709. without fear,

  1710. but that for

  1711. their sake he

  1712. faced it

  1713. terrified.

  1714. And that

  1715. is what he

  1716. did.

  1717. He faced

  1718. it.

  1719. Not my

  1720. will be

  1721. done,

  1722. but yours.

  1723. The final

  1724. part of this

  1725. one long

  1726. temptation

  1727. comes on

  1728. the cross.

  1729. If you

  1730. flick over

  1731. to chapter

  1732. 23,

  1733. verse 35.

  1734. And the

  1735. people stood

  1736. by watching,

  1737. saying,

  1738. but the

  1739. ruler scoffed

  1740. at him,

  1741. saying,

  1742. he saved

  1743. others.

  1744. Let him

  1745. save himself

  1746. if he is

  1747. the Christ

  1748. of God,

  1749. his chosen

  1750. one.

  1751. The soldiers

  1752. also mocked

  1753. him,

  1754. coming up

  1755. and offering

  1756. him sour

  1757. wine and

  1758. saying,

  1759. if you are

  1760. the king

  1761. of the

  1762. Jews,

  1763. save

  1764. yourself.

  1765. There was

  1766. also an

  1767. inscription

  1768. over him,

  1769. this is

  1770. the king

  1771. of the

  1772. Jews.

  1773. One of

  1774. the criminals

  1775. who were

  1776. hanged,

  1777. reeled at

  1778. him,

  1779. saying,

  1780. are you

  1781. not the

  1782. Christ?

  1783. Save

  1784. yourself and

  1785. us.

  1786. See the

  1787. temptation

  1788. three times?

  1789. Save

  1790. yourself,

  1791. save

  1792. yourself,

  1793. save

  1794. yourself.

  1795. Yet Jesus

  1796. remains on

  1797. the cross.

  1798. He doesn't

  1799. save himself

  1800. so that he

  1801. can save

  1802. us.

  1803. And in that

  1804. moment he

  1805. was treated

  1806. by God

  1807. like he

  1808. was the

  1809. greatest

  1810. rapist,

  1811. the greatest

  1812. murderer,

  1813. the greatest

  1814. porn addict,

  1815. the greatest

  1816. materialist,

  1817. the greatest

  1818. idol worshipper,

  1819. the greatest

  1820. tax invader,

  1821. the greatest

  1822. blasphemer that

  1823. has ever

  1824. walked on

  1825. the earth.

  1826. He remained

  1827. on that

  1828. cross in

  1829. darkness,

  1830. receiving the

  1831. wrath of

  1832. God in our

  1833. place.

  1834. He resisted

  1835. the temptation

  1836. to trust to

  1837. save himself

  1838. so that he

  1839. could save

  1840. us.

  1841. And that is

  1842. Luke's final

  1843. presentation of

  1844. Jesus, a

  1845. son who

  1846. obeys God

  1847. perfectly.

  1848. A son who

  1849. obeys God

  1850. perfectly.

  1851. Here is

  1852. the perfect

  1853. son.

  1854. And his

  1855. father says

  1856. to us this

  1857. morning,

  1858. this is my

  1859. beloved son

  1860. with whom I

  1861. am well

  1862. pleased.

  1863. Here is

  1864. the perfect

  1865. man.

  1866. Rudyard

  1867. Kipling's

  1868. poem was

  1869. that he

  1870. thought

  1871. problem,

  1872. sorry,

  1873. was that

  1874. he thought

  1875. his son

  1876. could maybe

  1877. be a man,

  1878. could maybe

  1879. attain

  1880. mature manhood.

  1881. If you

  1882. can,

  1883. if you

  1884. can,

  1885. if you

  1886. can,

  1887. which son

  1888. or daughter

  1889. of any

  1890. father has

  1891. ever lived

  1892. their life

  1893. well enough

  1894. to earn

  1895. the world

  1896. and everything

  1897. in it.

  1898. But here

  1899. is a man

  1900. who has

  1901. the right

  1902. to the

  1903. world

  1904. and everything

  1905. in it.

  1906. Here is

  1907. the proper

  1908. man.

  1909. From

  1910. conception

  1911. to the

  1912. cross,

  1913. from the

  1914. cradle

  1915. to the

  1916. grave,

  1917. Jesus

  1918. Christ

  1919. was

  1920. impeccable

  1921. in his

  1922. humanity.

  1923. Here is

  1924. the perfect

  1925. Israel.

  1926. Here is

  1927. the perfect

  1928. Adam.

  1929. And here

  1930. is where

  1931. the hope

  1932. of the

  1933. world

  1934. lies.

  1935. Not in

  1936. the first

  1937. Adam,

  1938. that great

  1939. giant to

  1940. whom we are

  1941. all hooked.

  1942. No,

  1943. our hope

  1944. lies in

  1945. this second

  1946. great giant,

  1947. Jesus Christ.

  1948. Because where

  1949. the first

  1950. Adam failed,

  1951. Jesus,

  1952. the second

  1953. and last

  1954. Adam,

  1955. does not

  1956. fail.

  1957. Where Adam

  1958. succumbed

  1959. to the

  1960. serpent in

  1961. a garden

  1962. of plenty,

  1963. Jesus resisted

  1964. the devil in

  1965. a wilderness

  1966. of scarcity.

  1967. Where Adam

  1968. failed by

  1969. keeping silent

  1970. and not

  1971. speaking God's

  1972. word to

  1973. rebuke the

  1974. serpent,

  1975. Jesus opened

  1976. his mouth.

  1977. And what

  1978. does he say?

  1979. It is

  1980. written,

  1981. God has

  1982. said,

  1983. and he

  1984. rebukes the

  1985. serpent.

  1986. Where Adam

  1987. stood in

  1988. a garden

  1989. and said,

  1990. my will

  1991. be done,

  1992. not yours

  1993. as it is

  1994. in heaven,

  1995. Jesus knelt

  1996. in a garden

  1997. and said,

  1998. not my will

  1999. be done,

  2000. but yours

  2001. as it is

  2002. in heaven.

  2003. Where Adam

  2004. stood by a

  2005. tree naked

  2006. and disobeyed

  2007. God,

  2008. Jesus hung

  2009. on a tree

  2010. naked out

  2011. of obedience

  2012. to God.

  2013. Where Adam

  2014. stood by a

  2015. tree alive

  2016. and brought

  2017. death,

  2018. Jesus hung

  2019. on a tree

  2020. dead and

  2021. brought life.

  2022. Where Adam

  2023. failed to

  2024. crush the

  2025. serpent's

  2026. head by

  2027. a tree,

  2028. Jesus

  2029. crushed his

  2030. head on

  2031. a tree.

  2032. brothers and

  2033. sisters,

  2034. here is

  2035. humanity

  2036. par excellence.

  2037. The doctrine

  2038. of humanity

  2039. is the

  2040. doctrine of

  2041. the person

  2042. of Jesus

  2043. Christ.

  2044. There is

  2045. no true

  2046. humanity

  2047. outside him.

  2048. There is

  2049. no true

  2050. humanity

  2051. without him.

  2052. Unless you

  2053. are connected

  2054. to Jesus

  2055. Christ,

  2056. you are

  2057. not

  2058. acting,

  2059. living

  2060. like a

  2061. true human

  2062. being.

  2063. Do you

  2064. want to be

  2065. truly human?

  2066. Then get

  2067. connected

  2068. to Jesus

  2069. Christ.

  2070. Because

  2071. Jesus saves

  2072. us as

  2073. much by

  2074. his life

  2075. as by

  2076. his death.

  2077. You see,

  2078. his death

  2079. was only a

  2080. sufficient

  2081. sacrifice to

  2082. God because

  2083. it was a

  2084. perfect death.

  2085. And it

  2086. was only a

  2087. perfect death

  2088. because he

  2089. lived a

  2090. perfect life.

  2091. He saves

  2092. us as

  2093. much by

  2094. his life

  2095. as by

  2096. his death.

  2097. Sinclair

  2098. Ferguson

  2099. puts it,

  2100. it's as if

  2101. all the

  2102. medals and

  2103. honors of

  2104. Christ are

  2105. pinned to

  2106. your chest

  2107. and all

  2108. of heaven

  2109. salutes

  2110. you.

  2111. You don't

  2112. just need

  2113. your sins

  2114. forgiven

  2115. to go and

  2116. live with

  2117. God.

  2118. You need

  2119. righteousness

  2120. put into

  2121. your account.

  2122. God

  2123. doesn't

  2124. just bring

  2125. up your

  2126. minus 100

  2127. to zero

  2128. when he

  2129. justifies

  2130. us.

  2131. He also

  2132. adds

  2133. 100%.

  2134. He forgives

  2135. the minus

  2136. 100 because

  2137. of Christ's

  2138. death and

  2139. he adds

  2140. 100% because

  2141. of Christ's

  2142. perfect

  2143. life.

  2144. Brothers and

  2145. sisters in

  2146. Christ,

  2147. this is the

  2148. gospel.

  2149. gospel,

  2150. in a

  2151. manger,

  2152. in the

  2153. city of

  2154. Bethlehem,

  2155. in the

  2156. troubled

  2157. streets of

  2158. Nazareth,

  2159. in a

  2160. carpenter's

  2161. shop,

  2162. in a

  2163. wilderness,

  2164. in the

  2165. garden of

  2166. Gethsemane,

  2167. and then on

  2168. a hill

  2169. called

  2170. Golgotha,

  2171. there was

  2172. a son

  2173. who

  2174. perfectly

  2175. obeyed his

  2176. father so

  2177. that his

  2178. father might

  2179. become our

  2180. father and

  2181. all heaven

  2182. might salute

  2183. us.

  2184. We're going

  2185. to close

  2186. by
