  1. If you have a Bible, please turn with me to Psalm 8. While you do that, let me just explain

  2. ! what we're going to be looking at this weekend. I've called the series Glorious Dust, the Christian

  3. ! Doctrine of Humanity. Glorious Dust, the Christian! Doctrine of Humanity. Our talk tonight is looking

  4. at man as ruler. Tomorrow morning we'll look at man as ruined. Then we'll look at the true

  5. man, Jesus Christ. And then on the Lord's Day in the morning, we'll look at man renewed.

  6. And in the evening, man resurrected. So ruler, ruined, true man, Jesus, renewed, resurrected.

  7. Tonight, we're looking at man created to rule. Surprise. That's what's at the heart of this

  8. psalm. It's a psalm about the unexpected, the surprising. But if we miss the surprise factor,

  9. then we miss the whole point of the psalm. Because the element of surprise causes David

  10. to extol God's greatness in the refrain, O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in

  11. all the earth. We get the hint of surprise in verse 1, where we're told that the God who

  12. has set his glory in the heavens has also displayed his glory, his majesty in all the earth. The

  13. God whose glory cannot be contained by the heaven of heavens has displayed his majesty in all the earth.

  14. Now when you hear that, when you hear that God's majesty has been displayed in all the earth,

  15. what do you think of? Think of creation, don't we? We think of Mount Everest or Victoria Falls in

  16. Zimbabwe or the plains of the Serengeti teeming with wild animals. We think of the Amazon rainforest

  17. or the Grand Canyon. We think of a beautiful star-studded night in the Lake District or a beautiful sunset.

  18. Isn't that what we think of when we hear of God's majesty displayed in all the earth?

  19. Here's the unexpected thing. Here's the big surprise in this psalm. When it comes to talking about God's majesty in all the earth,

  20. David talks about babies and mankind. God's name is majestic in all the earth because

  21. weak little babies defeat God's enemies, verse 2, and because

  22. puny little man

  23. rules God's world, verses 3 to 8.

  24. That's the logic of this psalm.

  25. The catalyst for praise for David is not cute little babies,

  26. verse 2. It's not creation, verse 3.

  27. It's not even mankind, verse 4.

  28. No, the catalyst for praise in this psalm is the surprise

  29. that weak little babies defeat God's enemies

  30. and that puny little man rules God's world.

  31. The first surprise in verse 2 is obvious enough.

  32. Out of the mouth of babes and infants you have established strength

  33. because of your foes to still the enemy and the avenger.

  34. The word here for babes is literally sucklings.

  35. In the Old Testament, or for infants, sorry, is literally sucklings.

  36. In the Old Testament, it's used in the context of oppression where babies are

  37. vulnerable victims of war and death.

  38. And yet, verse 2 says literally,

  39. from the mouth of babes suckling on their mother's breasts,

  40. God has established praise or strength, literally.

  41. I mean, David, are you having a laugh?

  42. If he would ever speak of strength coming out of a baby's mouth,

  43. out of a weak, vulnerable, dependent baby.

  44. It's strength going in the wrong direction, isn't it?

  45. I mean, isn't a baby's mouth supposed to receive nourishment and strength,

  46. not give it out?

  47. Yet God reverses the direction.

  48. From, out of the mouth of babes and infants comes strength.

  49. The surprise factor continues in the purpose given for this strength.

  50. To still the enemy and the avenger.

  51. The great and mighty enemies of God that rise up proud and arrogant against him

  52. are defeated not by armies of men, not by chariots and horses,

  53. not by tanks and fighter planes,

  54. but by weak, vulnerable children.

  55. How humbling for God's enemies.

  56. Now, if we had time tonight, we could look at Matthew chapter 21

    Matthew 21 chapter mention

  57. and see how Jesus applies this verse to his own day.

  58. The strength is the praise of God coming from little infants as they're running around

  59. and singing,

  60. Hosanna to the Son of David.

  61. Save us, Son of David,

  62. as he rides into Jerusalem on a donkey.

  63. But I want to focus our attention on the bigger surprise in this psalm.

  64. And that is in verses 3 to 8.

  65. God's name is majestic in all the earth because

  66. puny little man rules God's world.

  67. Verses 3 to 8.

  68. Weak little babies defeat God's enemies.

  69. Verse 2.

  70. And puny little man rules God's world.

  71. Verses 3 to 8.

  72. We just glance down at verse 3

  73. and compare it in length to verse 4 and 5 and 6.

  74. You'll notice that it's actually longer.

  75. It doesn't have the parallelism of verse 4.

  76. Hebrew poetry has this structure of parallelism.

  77. It will say something on the first line

  78. and then it will repeat the same thing on the second line

  79. often with a wee bit of a surprise factor or it adds something.

  80. But verse 3 has no parallelism.

  81. It sort of just keeps on going

  82. as if to underline the sense of awe of creation.

  83. When I look at your heavens,

  84. the work of your fingers,

  85. the moon and the stars which you have set in place.

  86. The mention of God's fingers is perhaps

  87. the most striking thing in the verse.

  88. God made the heavens

  89. and the moon and the stars with his fingers.

  90. Of course it's just a way of describing God in human terms

  91. which the Bible does often.

  92. But we know God is a spirit.

  93. He doesn't actually have a pair of fingers.

  94. But we mustn't rush to protect God too quickly here.

  95. He's quite happy to be described symbolically

  96. as having fingers.

  97. We should let the metaphor wash over us.

  98. We should meditate on the metaphor.

  99. God used his fingers to create the heavens

  100. and the moon and the stars.

  101. Now what does that communicate to you?

  102. He's an artist.

  103. He's a sculptor, a painter.

  104. The metaphor conveys the delicate, intricate, detailed care

  105. with which God made the world.

  106. But I think the metaphor suggests something else too.

  107. I'm sure most of us in this room have been on an aeroplane.

  108. You know as you sit at the window

  109. and the plane rises, takes off and rises up above the clouds

  110. and there out the window is that endless expanse of blue sky

  111. for thousands of miles.

  112. Or if you've never been in an aeroplane,

  113. you go out in the countryside on a dark night

  114. and you stand there and you look up at that canopy of stars above your head.

  115. Now think about the metaphor here.

  116. That endless blue sky, that star-studded night sky

  117. which God fashioned and shaped in such intricate detail,

  118. all of it is just at the tips of his fingers.

  119. It's so tiny, so small

  120. that God only needs to push and prod it

  121. with the divine digits.

  122. It's as if God picked up the moon like a marble

  123. and rolled it between his thumb and first finger

  124. and then just placed it in the night sky.

  125. Or like he picked up a star like a teacher does,

  126. those little gold stars for her child's homework

  127. and then just stuck it on the canvas of the night sky.

  128. God made the heavens with his fingers.

  129. He's an artist, but he is an incredibly big artist

  130. in comparison to his world.

  131. He molded the endless skies with just the tips of his fingers.

  132. Now if you're like me, you would think that the refrain of the psalm

  133. would kick in here.

  134. When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers,

  135. the moon and the stars which you have set in place,

  136. O Lord our Lord,

  137. how majestic is your name in all the earth.

  138. But that's not how the psalm progresses.

  139. David doesn't make an exclamation of praise.

  140. He asks a question.

  141. When I consider the blue skies and the fact that you made them

  142. in such fine detail and in comparison to you

  143. they are so small at the tips of your fingers

  144. and man in comparison to them is even smaller,

  145. what is man that you are mindful of him?

  146. There's no exclamation of praise.

  147. There's just a question of puzzlement.

  148. What is man that you are mindful of him

  149. and the son of man that you care for him?

  150. The word man here and the phrase human being

  151. if you have a NIV or son of man

  152. both speak of our fragility, our weakness, our humanness.

  153. We are minuscule specks of dust on a rock

  154. revolving around one of billions of stars

  155. in but one of billions of galaxies.

  156. So why would God even bother with us?

  157. I mean, did you bother with the ants

  158. on the pavement out there tonight

  159. as you walked in here?

  160. Didn't see them?

  161. Insignificant?

  162. Yet here is God.

  163. We are even more insignificant

  164. compared to the ants.

  165. And here is God caring for us.

  166. Do you feel your puniness,

  167. your minuteness,

  168. your insignificance?

  169. David wants you to feel it.

  170. He wants you to feel

  171. how insignificant you are.

  172. But he also wants you to feel something else

  173. and that is

  174. that though you are insignificant

  175. compared to this vast universe

  176. which is so small

  177. in comparison to God,

  178. God still cares for you.

  179. Puny little you

  180. are on the mind of the God

  181. who cast billions of stars

  182. into billions of galaxies

  183. with his fingers.

  184. Now again, you'd expect the refrain

  185. to kick in here, wouldn't you?

  186. When I consider the heavens,

  187. the work of your fingers,

  188. the moon and the stars

  189. which you have set in place,

  190. what is man that you are mindful of him

  191. and the son of man that you care for him?

  192. And since you do care for him,

  193. O Lord, our Lord,

  194. how majestic is your name

  195. in all the earth.

  196. But again, that's not the logic of the psalm.

  197. The refrain is withheld

  198. until verse 9.

  199. Which means that the catalyst

  200. for praise in this psalm

  201. is not creation, verse 3.

  202. It's not even God's care for us,

  203. verse 4.

  204. No, the catalyst for praise in this psalm

  205. is seen in the contrast

  206. between verses 3 to 5,

  207. 3 to 4,

  208. and verses 5 to 8.

  209. There's a yet, a but,

  210. at the beginning of verse 5.

  211. The NIV, if you have an NIV,

  212. completely misses it.

  213. But the ESV does get it.

  214. There's a yet, a but,

  215. at the beginning of verse 5.

  216. When I look at your heavens,

  217. the work of your fingers,

  218. the moon and the stars

  219. that you have set in place,

  220. what is man that you are mindful of him,

  221. the son of man that you care for him?

  222. Yet, yet,

  223. insignificant though we are,

  224. yet you have made him

  225. a little lower than the heavenly beings

  226. and crowned him with glory and honor.

  227. You have given him dominion

  228. over the works of your hands,

  229. and you have put all things

  230. under his feet.

  231. Psalm 8 is about the clash

  232. of man's insignificance

  233. and man's significance.

  234. Man is utterly insignificant

  235. in comparison to God's world,

  236. verses 3 and 4.

  237. Yet, man is supremely significant

  238. as ruler over God's world,

  239. verses 5 to 8.

  240. Puny little man,

  241. verses 3 to 4,

  242. rules God's world,

  243. verses 5 to 8.

  244. And it's only when those two

  245. paradoxical truths

  246. are set side by side

  247. that David bursts

  248. into praise again.

  249. O Lord, our Lord,

  250. how majestic

  251. is your name

  252. in all the earth.

  253. Well, let's take a closer look

  254. at verses 3 to 5.

  255. You have made him a little lower

  256. than the heavenly beings

  257. and crowned him with glory

  258. and honor.

  259. Charles Darwin said

  260. that as human beings

  261. we bear the image

  262. of our lowly origins.

  263. The 20th century psychiatrist

  264. Murray Bowen said

  265. man is an evolving form of life.

  266. He is more related

  267. to lower forms of life

  268. than he is different from them.

  269. Man is a biological,

  270. instinctual animal,

  271. an emotional,

  272. reactive product of nature.

  273. Look again at verse 5.

  274. Yet you made him

  275. a little lower

  276. than the heavenly beings.

  277. The word there

  278. could refer to angels,

  279. which I think it does,

  280. or to God.

  281. Hebrews 2

  282. picks up this verse

  283. and translates that

  284. as referring to angels.

  285. But whatever way

  286. you translate the word,

  287. Elohim,

  288. it could refer to God

  289. or to angels,

  290. we get the sense

  291. of our original state.

  292. We do not bear the image

  293. of our lowly origins

  294. as Darwin put it.

  295. We are not biological,

  296. instinctual animals,

  297. more related to the lower

  298. forms of life

  299. than we are different from them

  300. as Bowen put it.

  301. Rather,

  302. we bear the image

  303. of high

  304. and holy origins.

  305. we fall short

  306. only a little

  307. from the angels

  308. in God's presence.

  309. Well,

  310. verse 4

  311. spotlighted our humanness,

  312. how insignificant we are.

  313. Verse 5

  314. spotlights

  315. our God-likeness.

  316. The words glory

  317. and honor

  318. are two

  319. descriptives

  320. that are only ever used

  321. of God

  322. in the Bible.

  323. And here we

  324. are being given

  325. those descriptions.

  326. And the significance

  327. continues in verse 6.

  328. You've given him dominion

  329. over the works

  330. of your hands.

  331. You've put all things

  332. under his feet.

  333. We weren't just created

  334. with this high

  335. and glorious state.

  336. We were given

  337. a high and glorious job

  338. to do.

  339. Ruler

  340. over all things.

  341. And then David

  342. lists them.

  343. All sheep

  344. and oxen,

  345. all the beasts

  346. of the field,

  347. the birds of the heavens,

  348. the fish of the sea,

  349. whatever passes

  350. along the paths

  351. of the seas.

  352. Do you hear the echo

  353. of Genesis 1

  354. where God formed

  355. three realms,

  356. water,

  357. sky,

  358. land,

  359. in that order.

  360. And then he filled

  361. each realm

  362. with fish,

  363. birds,

  364. animals,

  365. in that order.

  366. Well,

  367. this psalm captures

  368. all of those realms

  369. but in reverse order.

  370. First there are

  371. the beasts

  372. of the field,

  373. then there are

  374. the birds

  375. in the sky,

  376. then there are

  377. the fish

  378. in the sea,

  379. Genesis works

  380. from water

  381. to sky

  382. to land,

  383. Psalm 8

  384. works from land

  385. to sky

  386. to water,

  387. man is given

  388. rule over every realm

  389. and over every creature

  390. and you'll see

  391. it's not just

  392. the pet pony

  393. or poodle,

  394. it's the alligator

  395. and the antelope,

  396. the lion

  397. and the cobra,

  398. the beasts

  399. of the field,

  400. it's not just

  401. budgies and parrots,

  402. it's eagles

  403. and hawks,

  404. it's not just

  405. goldfish

  406. and turtles,

  407. it's the blue whale,

  408. the great white shark,

  409. all that swim

  410. the paths

  411. of the sea,

  412. not all that swim

  413. the paths

  414. of your fishbowl

  415. in your living room.

  416. Everything

  417. has been placed

  418. under the rule

  419. of man,

  420. all creatures

  421. and all realms.

  422. In fact,

  423. the phrase

  424. all things

  425. or everything

  426. in verse 6

  427. may hint at even more

  428. than just planet earth.

  429. Do you notice

  430. the phrase there

  431. in verse 6

  432. over the works

  433. of your hands?

  434. What does that recall?

  435. Verse 3,

  436. the works

  437. of your fingers.

  438. If this is just

  439. a case

  440. of stylistic

  441. variety

  442. and I think

  443. that's the only

  444. explanation,

  445. then we have

  446. a profound

  447. statement here.

  448. Think about it.

  449. The very thing

  450. in verse 3

  451. that made us

  452. feel so puny

  453. and so small,

  454. the works

  455. of God's fingers,

  456. is now

  457. the very thing

  458. in verse 6

  459. that we've been

  460. given dominion

  461. over.

  462. The stars

  463. and the moon

  464. make us feel

  465. so small,

  466. so insignificant.

  467. But they are

  468. ours to rule.

  469. And we've done it,

  470. haven't we?

  471. We've been to the moon,

  472. we've stuck a flag

  473. in it,

  474. we've said ours,

  475. one small step

  476. for man,

  477. one giant leap

  478. for mankind.

  479. But I know

  480. technically speaking

  481. it was the Americans

  482. and we've never

  483. heard the end

  484. of it since,

  485. but the Irish

  486. settled America.

  487. So it was really

  488. the Irish

  489. who ruled the moon.

  490. But you get the point.

  491. We were made

  492. to rule the moon.

  493. I remember

  494. a BBC series,

  495. The Wonders

  496. of the Solar System,

  497. Empire of the Sun,

  498. that explained

  499. that in the 1970s

  500. we sent,

  501. the Irish,

  502. we sent a probe

  503. out into space

  504. in the 1970s

  505. that was measuring

  506. the heat waves

  507. coming off,

  508. the winds

  509. that were coming off

  510. the sun,

  511. travelling billions

  512. of miles

  513. out into space.

  514. And that probe

  515. is still in space

  516. sending back signals

  517. to Earth.

  518. I mean,

  519. we rule the stars,

  520. don't we?

  521. Is it too much

  522. of an exaggeration

  523. to say

  524. that we

  525. were made

  526. to rule things

  527. that even David

  528. at this point in time

  529. couldn't have imagined?

  530. Perhaps he was

  531. speaking better

  532. than he realised.

  533. But in any case,

  534. what Samet gives us

  535. is a magnificent

  536. picture of man.

  537. There is no

  538. sniff

  539. of Darwinian

  540. lowly origins

  541. here.

  542. Not a sniff.

  543. We are

  544. the pinnacle

  545. of God's creation,

  546. the paragon

  547. of all creatures.

  548. We are

  549. his vice-regents,

  550. commissioned

  551. to rule the world

  552. and everything

  553. in it.

  554. And it is

  555. this surprise,

  556. the surprise

  557. that puny

  558. little man

  559. rules God's world

  560. that causes

  561. the refrain

  562. in verse 9

  563. to kick in.

  564. That's when David

  565. praises God

  566. again.

  567. O Lord,

  568. our Lord,

  569. how majestic

  570. is your name

  571. in all the earth.

  572. Weak little babies

  573. defeat God's enemies.

  574. Puny little man

  575. rules God's world.

  576. O Lord,

  577. our Lord,

  578. how majestic

  579. is your name

  580. in all the earth.

  581. And that's the

  582. psalm in a nutshell.

  583. Those are the two

  584. great surprises

  585. that are at the

  586. heart of this

  587. psalm.

  588. The question is,

  589. what are we

  590. to do with it?

  591. Well,

  592. I want to suggest

  593. five points

  594. of application.

  595. Number one,

  596. be amazed

  597. at what you

  598. were made

  599. to be.

  600. Be amazed

  601. at what you

  602. were made

  603. to be.

  604. What this

  605. psalm says to us

  606. this evening is,

  607. do you have

  608. a high enough

  609. view of yourself?

  610. Because the

  611. world's your oyster.

  612. It really is

  613. your oyster.

  614. There's not a

  615. square inch

  616. of the whole

  617. of this created

  618. universe over

  619. which God

  620. does not say

  621. to us,

  622. it's yours.

  623. It's all

  624. yours.

  625. Now,

  626. of course,

  627. there's the

  628. danger that

  629. we take this

  630. too far

  631. and see our

  632. rule as

  633. independent,

  634. autonomous,

  635. from God,

  636. rulers of

  637. everything,

  638. apart from

  639. God.

  640. Our culture,

  641. our society

  642. preaches the

  643. gospel of

  644. self-sufficiency,

  645. autonomy.

  646. It's a

  647. blasphemous

  648. message.

  649. The only

  650. person in

  651. the universe

  652. who is

  653. self-sufficient

  654. and autonomous

  655. is God.

  656. He alone

  657. is autonomos,

  658. a law

  659. unto

  660. himself.

  661. It reminds

  662. me of that

  663. famous story

  664. of Muhammad

  665. Ali.

  666. He's on an

  667. airplane.

  668. They're coming

  669. into land

  670. and the

  671. captain comes

  672. over the

  673. intercom.

  674. Would all

  675. passengers

  676. please return

  677. to their

  678. seats and

  679. fasten their

  680. seatbelts?

  681. And as the

  682. air hostess is

  683. walking through

  684. the cabin,

  685. she lifts

  686. down and she

  687. sees that

  688. Muhammad Ali

  689. doesn't have a

  690. seatbelt on.

  691. And she

  692. says,

  693. excuse me

  694. sir,

  695. the captain

  696. has asked

  697. all passengers

  698. to fasten

  699. their seatbelts

  700. and he

  701. said,

  702. Superman

  703. don't need

  704. no seatbelt.

  705. And she

  706. said,

  707. Superman

  708. don't need

  709. no airplane.

  710. Now put

  711. your seatbelt

  712. on.

  713. See,

  714. the problem

  715. with Muhammad

  716. Ali is,

  717. he thinks

  718. he's completely

  719. self-sufficient,

  720. independent,

  721. autonomous,

  722. a law

  723. unto himself.

  724. But if he

  725. really was,

  726. then he'd

  727. need no

  728. airplane.

  729. And it's

  730. the exact

  731. same with

  732. man's

  733. dependence

  734. on God.

  735. It's an

  736. unavoidable

  737. fact.

  738. It cannot

  739. be escaped.

  740. Did you

  741. notice how

  742. God is

  743. the subject

  744. of all

  745. the verbs

  746. in verses

  747. 5 and

  748. 6?

  749. Yet you

  750. God

  751. made him

  752. man a

  753. little lower

  754. than the

  755. heavenly

  756. beings.

  757. And you

  758. God

  759. crowned him

  760. with glory

  761. and honour.

  762. And you

  763. God

  764. gave him

  765. dominion.

  766. And you

  767. God

  768. put all

  769. things under

  770. his feet.

  771. I mean,

  772. you can't

  773. get a

  774. clearer

  775. statement

  776. of man's

  777. dependence

  778. on God.

  779. Man in

  780. the Bible,

  781. man in

  782. the world,

  783. is man

  784. dependent

  785. on God,

  786. whether he

  787. likes it

  788. or not,

  789. believes it

  790. or not,

  791. acts like

  792. it or not.

  793. Even

  794. atheists are

  795. dependent on

  796. God for

  797. their own

  798. worldview.

  799. I mean,

  800. where do you

  801. get the

  802. definition

  803. atheism from?

  804. You get it

  805. from theism

  806. and sticking

  807. an A on

  808. the front of

  809. it.

  810. They're

  811. dependent

  812. on theism

  813. for their

  814. very

  815. worldview.

  816. Theism

  817. is not

  818. defined by

  819. taking

  820. atheism

  821. and taking

  822. the A

  823. off it.

  824. It's like

  825. Cornelius

  826. Van Till

  827. who said

  828. atheists are

  829. like the

  830. little girl

  831. who wants

  832. to slap

  833. her father

  834. in the

  835. face,

  836. but she

  837. has to

  838. climb onto

  839. his lap

  840. to do

  841. so.

  842. So,

  843. man in

  844. the Bible

  845. is dependent

  846. on God,

  847. that is

  848. clear,

  849. but keeping

  850. that perspective

  851. and that is

  852. the right

  853. perspective

  854. of ruling

  855. under the

  856. ruler,

  857. of lording

  858. over the

  859. world under

  860. the Lord,

  861. let's not

  862. miss the

  863. point,

  864. the jaw

  865. dropping

  866. point that

  867. David is

  868. making,

  869. the surprise

  870. that though

  871. we are

  872. mere specks

  873. in this

  874. vast universe,

  875. God made

  876. us to

  877. rule it.

  878. I love

  879. that bit

  880. in C.S.

  881. Lewis's

  882. Prince Caspian

  883. where Badger

  884. is speaking

  885. of Narnia,

  886. it's not

  887. men's

  888. country,

  889. but it

  890. is a

  891. country for

  892. a man

  893. to be

  894. king of.

  895. This

  896. world is

  897. not our

  898. world,

  899. it's God's

  900. world,

  901. but it

  902. is a

  903. world for

  904. man to

  905. be king

  906. of.

  907. It is

  908. a world

  909. for us,

  910. male and

  911. female,

  912. to rule

  913. it.

  914. And there's

  915. a sense

  916. in which

  917. this evening

  918. we need

  919. to praise

  920. God for

  921. that.

  922. Sometimes we

  923. rush so

  924. quickly to

  925. the gospel

  926. that we

  927. forget this

  928. aspect of

  929. God's

  930. common

  931. grace.

  932. Puny

  933. little

  934. man

  935. really

  936. does

  937. rule

  938. God's

  939. world.

  940. We do.

  941. We photograph

  942. stars and

  943. determine when

  944. they'll appear

  945. and disappear.

  946. We send

  947. robots to

  948. planet Mars

  949. to take

  950. photographs

  951. and collect

  952. rock samples.

  953. We've

  954. mastered

  955. human

  956. language so

  957. that we

  958. write beautiful

  959. poems and

  960. great pieces

  961. of literature.

  962. We've

  963. built bridges

  964. over the

  965. impasse of

  966. miles of

  967. water.

  968. We've

  969. blown holes

  970. into mountains

  971. to make

  972. tunnels.

  973. We've

  974. tamed the

  975. tiger.

  976. We swim

  977. with killer

  978. whales.

  979. We've

  980. created the

  981. internet which

  982. can send a

  983. photograph from

  984. London to

  985. Los Angeles

  986. in two

  987. seconds.

  988. We've

  989. developed drugs

  990. that can

  991. cure Ebola.

  992. There's a

  993. sense in

  994. which tonight

  995. we say,

  996. O Lord,

  997. our Lord,

  998. how majestic

  999. is your name

  1000. in all the

  1001. earth because

  1002. you have

  1003. given us

  1004. this world

  1005. to rule.

  1006. You may

  1007. be saying,

  1008. yes, but

  1009. I'm not so

  1010. sure.

  1011. Maybe this

  1012. is David

  1013. reflecting on

  1014. Eden before

  1015. the fall.

  1016. Well, then

  1017. why does he

  1018. talk about

  1019. enemies in

  1020. verse 2?

  1021. And even

  1022. after Noah

  1023. comes out

  1024. of the ark

  1025. in a fallen

  1026. world, what

  1027. does God

  1028. tell Noah

  1029. to do?

  1030. To rule

  1031. it.

  1032. And he

  1033. says, it's

  1034. all yours.

  1035. I've placed

  1036. everything into

  1037. your hands.

  1038. So even

  1039. after the

  1040. fall, this

  1041. is still

  1042. the structure

  1043. of the

  1044. world.

  1045. Clearer

  1046. still we

  1047. see your

  1048. hand in

  1049. man whom

  1050. you have

  1051. made for

  1052. the ruler

  1053. of creation's

  1054. glory, image

  1055. of your

  1056. majesty.

  1057. Music, art,

  1058. the fruitful

  1059. garden, all

  1060. the labor of

  1061. his days are

  1062. the calling

  1063. of his

  1064. maker to

  1065. the harvest

  1066. feast of

  1067. praise.

  1068. The

  1069. structure of

  1070. creation was

  1071. not ruined,

  1072. by the

  1073. fall.

  1074. Be amazed

  1075. at what

  1076. you were

  1077. made to

  1078. be.

  1079. Number two,

  1080. but be

  1081. aware of

  1082. what you

  1083. have

  1084. become.

  1085. Be aware

  1086. of what

  1087. you have

  1088. become.

  1089. Think if

  1090. you're honest

  1091. tonight as I

  1092. was giving

  1093. you that

  1094. list of

  1095. our

  1096. accomplishments,

  1097. was there

  1098. a niggle

  1099. in your

  1100. mind saying

  1101. yeah but

  1102. I mean

  1103. really?

  1104. Yes we've

  1105. sent probes

  1106. into space,

  1107. yes we've

  1108. planted a

  1109. flag on

  1110. the moon

  1111. but in

  1112. Larry Norman's

  1113. words I

  1114. say you

  1115. starved your

  1116. children to

  1117. do it.

  1118. Yes we've

  1119. mastered human

  1120. language but we

  1121. also know how

  1122. to twist words

  1123. to tell a

  1124. lie.

  1125. Yes we've

  1126. blown holes in

  1127. mountains but

  1128. we've also

  1129. blown holes in

  1130. buildings and

  1131. killed people

  1132. deliberately.

  1133. Yes we swim

  1134. with killer

  1135. whales but

  1136. sometimes they

  1137. turn on us

  1138. and kill us.

  1139. Yes we've

  1140. created the

  1141. internet and

  1142. can send

  1143. photos to

  1144. friends but

  1145. we've also

  1146. used it for

  1147. the exploitation

  1148. of women and

  1149. children in

  1150. pornography.

  1151. Yes we've

  1152. developed drugs

  1153. that can cure

  1154. diseases but

  1155. we've also

  1156. developed chemicals

  1157. that can commit

  1158. ethnic genocide.

  1159. Yes God has

  1160. given us rule

  1161. over our family

  1162. relationships and

  1163. work and

  1164. university

  1165. friendships but

  1166. who of us

  1167. tonight can say

  1168. that any of us

  1169. have lived

  1170. perfectly in

  1171. those relationships?

  1172. I mean let's

  1173. be honest while

  1174. we were made

  1175. to fall only a

  1176. little short

  1177. from the angels

  1178. we have fallen

  1179. very far short

  1180. from what God

  1181. made us to be

  1182. and why?

  1183. Because we

  1184. tried to live

  1185. independently.

  1186. We tried to

  1187. pretend there's

  1188. no God.

  1189. We tried to be

  1190. like Muhammad

  1191. Ali fly without

  1192. a seat belt.

  1193. But man left

  1194. to himself man

  1195. in rebellion

  1196. against his

  1197. creator is

  1198. never a

  1199. pretty picture.

  1200. I said earlier

  1201. that this psalm

  1202. asks us the

  1203. question do you

  1204. have a high

  1205. enough view of

  1206. yourself?

  1207. But this psalm

  1208. said in the

  1209. context of the

  1210. whole Bible

  1211. asks us the

  1212. question do you

  1213. also have a

  1214. realistic view

  1215. of yourself?

  1216. Because the

  1217. reality is we've

  1218. messed up and

  1219. we've messed

  1220. the world up.

  1221. Just turn your

  1222. TV on.

  1223. The world's an

  1224. absolute mess.

  1225. I love that

  1226. story of G.K.

  1227. Chesterton who

  1228. was reading the

  1229. newspaper one day

  1230. and the editor in

  1231. a column said

  1232. what's wrong with

  1233. the world?

  1234. Please send in your

  1235. answers.

  1236. G.K.

  1237. Chesterton wrote

  1238. dear sir in

  1239. regards to your

  1240. question what is

  1241. wrong with the

  1242. world?

  1243. I am yours

  1244. sincerely G.K.

  1245. Chesterton.

  1246. He hit the nail

  1247. right in the head.

  1248. What's wrong with

  1249. the world?

  1250. It's not your

  1251. next door neighbour.

  1252. It's not the

  1253. environment.

  1254. It's you.

  1255. It's me.

  1256. Why?

  1257. Because we have

  1258. abandoned our

  1259. creator.

  1260. We have rebelled

  1261. against him.

  1262. But though we

  1263. have rebelled

  1264. against God

  1265. God has not

  1266. abandoned his

  1267. basic plan

  1268. to rule the

  1269. world through

  1270. man.

  1271. Just like I

  1272. was saying the

  1273. fall does not

  1274. remove the

  1275. creation, the

  1276. created order.

  1277. And God did

  1278. not abandon

  1279. his plan to

  1280. rule the

  1281. world through

  1282. man or to

  1283. be more precise

  1284. to rule the

  1285. world through

  1286. one man.

  1287. That has always

  1288. been God's

  1289. intention.

  1290. To rule the

  1291. world through

  1292. one man.

  1293. He created

  1294. Adam.

  1295. He was to

  1296. rule the

  1297. world through

  1298. one man and

  1299. his bride.

  1300. But Adam

  1301. failed and we

  1302. failed with him.

  1303. Which brings us

  1304. to the third

  1305. point.

  1306. Be amazed at

  1307. Jesus, the

  1308. proper man.

  1309. Be amazed at

  1310. Jesus, the

  1311. proper man.

  1312. Now, before I

  1313. unpack this

  1314. point, I just

  1315. want to step

  1316. back a little.

  1317. I've been

  1318. speaking this

  1319. evening quite a

  1320. bit of

  1321. ourselves.

  1322. Perhaps you've

  1323. been a bit

  1324. uneasy.

  1325. What's all this

  1326. man-centered talk,

  1327. Johnny?

  1328. I mean, isn't

  1329. that the problem

  1330. with modern-day

  1331. Christianity?

  1332. We are too

  1333. people-centered,

  1334. too self-centered

  1335. instead of God-centered.

  1336. John Piper puts

  1337. his finger on it

  1338. when he says,

  1339. we evangelicals

  1340. are okay being

  1341. God-centered

  1342. so long as

  1343. God is man-centered.

  1344. And he's

  1345. right.

  1346. But I just

  1347. want to tweak

  1348. it a little.

  1349. I know what he

  1350. means, Piper,

  1351. and he's right.

  1352. There is a form

  1353. of Christianity

  1354. that's so

  1355. preoccupied with

  1356. ourselves that

  1357. God is not

  1358. God.

  1359. He's just the

  1360. servant who

  1361. meets our

  1362. needs.

  1363. But I want to

  1364. tweak that a

  1365. little.

  1366. The reason I

  1367. can speak

  1368. tonight, and

  1369. the reason

  1370. Sam, it speaks

  1371. so man-centeredly,

  1372. if I can use

  1373. that language,

  1374. is because of

  1375. the person of

  1376. Jesus Christ.

  1377. See, in

  1378. Christ, God

  1379. is both God-centered

  1380. and man-centered

  1381. to the exact

  1382. same extent.

  1383. It has

  1384. always been

  1385. God's plan

  1386. for a man

  1387. to rule the

  1388. world.

  1389. For one

  1390. man to

  1391. rule the

  1392. world.

  1393. Indeed, isn't

  1394. it interesting

  1395. that at no

  1396. point in

  1397. this, Sam,

  1398. does David

  1399. speak about

  1400. man or

  1401. mankind in

  1402. the plural?

  1403. If you have

  1404. an ESV, you'll

  1405. see that it's

  1406. followed that.

  1407. The new

  1408. NIV, sadly,

  1409. has missed

  1410. it.

  1411. You have

  1412. made him

  1413. a little

  1414. lower.

  1415. You crowned

  1416. him.

  1417. You have

  1418. given him.

  1419. You have

  1420. put all

  1421. things under

  1422. his feet.

  1423. You see

  1424. the singularity

  1425. here?

  1426. Of course,

  1427. David is

  1428. speaking about

  1429. mankind, the

  1430. generic mankind,

  1431. but he speaks

  1432. about generic

  1433. mankind,

  1434. in the singular.

  1435. And that

  1436. allows this

  1437. psalm to

  1438. therefore be

  1439. applied to

  1440. a man, but

  1441. not just any

  1442. man, the

  1443. one man who

  1444. himself embodies

  1445. mankind.

  1446. The last

  1447. Adam, who is

  1448. himself the

  1449. embodiment of

  1450. a new

  1451. humanity.

  1452. and when we

  1453. read the

  1454. New Testament,

  1455. we see that

  1456. this psalm is

  1457. picked up and

  1458. used and

  1459. related and

  1460. applied to

  1461. Jesus.

  1462. You could,

  1463. of course,

  1464. think of what

  1465. Jesus does in

  1466. the Gospels.

  1467. He walks on

  1468. water, he

  1469. calms the

  1470. storm.

  1471. He is

  1472. showing in

  1473. those miraculous

  1474. acts that he

  1475. himself is the

  1476. man of

  1477. Samia, who

  1478. literally rules

  1479. over everything.

  1480. But come with

  1481. me to

  1482. Ephesians

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  1483. chapter 1

  1484. and see how

  1485. Paul picks up

  1486. this psalm and

  1487. applies it

  1488. directly to

  1489. Jesus.

  1490. Ephesians

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  1491. chapter 1.

  1492. Reading from

  1493. verse 20.

  1494. According to

  1495. the working of

  1496. his great might

  1497. that he worked

  1498. in Christ when

  1499. he raised him

  1500. from the dead

  1501. and seated him

  1502. at his right

  1503. hand in the

  1504. heavenly places,

  1505. far above all

  1506. rule and

  1507. authority and

  1508. power and

  1509. dominion and

  1510. above every

  1511. name that

  1512. is named,

  1513. not only in

  1514. this age but

  1515. also in the

  1516. one to come,

  1517. and he put

  1518. all things

  1519. under his

  1520. feet,

  1521. there's the

  1522. allusion to

  1523. Samia,

  1524. and gave him

  1525. as head over

  1526. all things to

  1527. the church,

  1528. which is his

  1529. body, the

  1530. fullness of

  1531. him who

  1532. fills all

  1533. in all.

  1534. Do you

  1535. notice what's

  1536. going on here?

  1537. This is an

  1538. application of

  1539. Samia, but it

  1540. is also an

  1541. unwrapping of

  1542. what the all

  1543. things really

  1544. meant.

  1545. It's not just

  1546. this physical

  1547. universe that

  1548. is placed under

  1549. Christ's feet.

  1550. Now it is

  1551. every rule and

  1552. authority, every

  1553. power and

  1554. dominion in

  1555. the universe,

  1556. but notice not

  1557. only in this

  1558. age but also

  1559. in the age to

  1560. come.

  1561. Jesus is Lord

  1562. not just of this

  1563. world in this

  1564. age, but he is

  1565. Lord of that

  1566. world in that

  1567. age as well.

  1568. Hebrews 2 says

  1569. something similar,

  1570. God has

  1571. subjected the

  1572. world to

  1573. come under

  1574. Jesus'

  1575. authority.

  1576. 1 Corinthians

  1577. 15 picks up

  1578. Samia and

  1579. says that death

  1580. itself will be

  1581. placed under

  1582. his feet.

  1583. I love that

  1584. hymn of

  1585. Francis of

  1586. Assisi, all

  1587. creatures of

  1588. our God and

  1589. King, you

  1590. know the hymn,

  1591. all creatures of

  1592. our God and

  1593. King.

  1594. And thou

  1595. most kind and

  1596. gentle death,

  1597. waiting to

  1598. hush our

  1599. latest breath.

  1600. Oh, praise

  1601. him.

  1602. Death, praise

  1603. him, because

  1604. you are now

  1605. under his

  1606. feet.

  1607. And so here

  1608. we have the

  1609. physical world,

  1610. the spiritual

  1611. world, the

  1612. present world,

  1613. the future

  1614. world, all of

  1615. it, all of

  1616. it placed under

  1617. the feet of

  1618. Jesus Christ.

  1619. God has left

  1620. nothing that is

  1621. not subject to

  1622. him.

  1623. Doesn't the

  1624. phrase Jesus is

  1625. Lord now take

  1626. on a whole

  1627. new meaning

  1628. when you read

  1629. it in the

  1630. light of

  1631. Psalm 8 as

  1632. it is applied

  1633. in the New

  1634. Testament.

  1635. And so this

  1636. should alleviate

  1637. any concern

  1638. with a man

  1639. centeredness of

  1640. Psalm 8.

  1641. God is as

  1642. man centered as

  1643. he is God

  1644. centered because

  1645. of Jesus Christ.

  1646. He is, as

  1647. Martin Luther

  1648. called him,

  1649. the proper

  1650. man.

  1651. But here's

  1652. the surprise.

  1653. Who is this

  1654. proper man?

  1655. Where did he

  1656. come from?

  1657. He was born

  1658. in a manger

  1659. in the dark

  1660. streets of

  1661. Bethlehem.

  1662. He grew up

  1663. as a carpenter's

  1664. son.

  1665. He was

  1666. despised in

  1667. the town of

  1668. Nazareth.

  1669. During his

  1670. ministry he

  1671. had nowhere to

  1672. lay his head

  1673. and in the end

  1674. his own people

  1675. gave him a

  1676. death befitting

  1677. a criminal

  1678. and a murderer.

  1679. He was

  1680. despised and

  1681. rejected, a

  1682. man of sorrows

  1683. and familiar with

  1684. suffering like

  1685. one from whom

  1686. men had their

  1687. faces.

  1688. He was

  1689. despised and

  1690. we esteemed

  1691. him not.

  1692. He was

  1693. puny, he

  1694. was insignificant,

  1695. he was

  1696. despised, but

  1697. it has always

  1698. been God's

  1699. plan for

  1700. puny,

  1701. insignificant

  1702. little man

  1703. to rule his

  1704. world.

  1705. And it is

  1706. that humble,

  1707. frail,

  1708. despised you

  1709. that God

  1710. has placed

  1711. as king

  1712. over the

  1713. world to

  1714. come.

  1715. Oh Lord,

  1716. our Lord,

  1717. how majestic

  1718. is your name

  1719. in all the

  1720. earth.

  1721. Number four,

  1722. be amazed

  1723. at what is

  1724. now yours

  1725. in Christ.

  1726. Be amazed

  1727. at what is

  1728. now yours

  1729. in Christ.

  1730. When we

  1731. become

  1732. Christians,

  1733. we bring

  1734. ourselves back

  1735. under the

  1736. rule of

  1737. God's new

  1738. king.

  1739. We're no

  1740. longer under

  1741. the ancient

  1742. King Adam

  1743. from whom

  1744. we descended.

  1745. We are

  1746. now under

  1747. the present

  1748. King Jesus

  1749. to whom we

  1750. are united.

  1751. And because

  1752. we are now

  1753. united to

  1754. the proper

  1755. man who

  1756. reigns over

  1757. all things,

  1758. there's another

  1759. surprise here.

  1760. In Christ,

  1761. all things

  1762. have now

  1763. become ours.

  1764. Come with

  1765. me to

  1766. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 3 chapter mention

  1767. chapter 3.

  1768. 1 Corinthians chapter 3

    1 Corinthians 3 chapter mention

  1769. in verse 22

1770. Paul is speaking in the

  1771. context of the celebrity

  1772. pastor cult in Corinth

1773. but the point he makes

1774. is applicable not just to the celebrity

  1775. pastor context but to

  1776. all contexts

1777. so let no one boast in men for

1778. all things are yours whether Paul

1779. or Apollos or Cephas or the world

1780. or life or death or the present or the future

1781. all are yours and you are

  1782. Christ's and Christ

  1783. is God's

1784. do you see that the world

  1785. life death the present

  1786. the future

  1787. is all yours

  1788. why is it

  1789. yours

1790. because you are in Christ

  1791. and Christ belongs to

  1792. God and God has

1793. exalted Christ over all things

  1794. so be amazed

1795. at what is now yours

  1796. in Christ

1797. what God says to us

1798. this evening is what he always

1799. what he intended us to be

1800. he still intends us to be

  1801. as we are remade

1802. in the person of his son

  1803. Jesus Christ

1804. so whatever it is you do

1805. whether it's baking or ballet

  1806. basketball

  1807. or the Higgs

  1808. Boas and particle theory

  1809. whatever you do

  1810. rule over it

  1811. master it

  1812. to God's glory

  1813. why

  1814. because it's yours

  1815. under Christ

  1816. the world is still

  1817. your oyster

  1818. because it's

  1819. his oyster

  1820. and you are connected

  1821. to him

  1822. all things are yours

  1823. fifth and finally

1824. be amazed at what you will

  1825. become in Christ

1826. be amazed at what you will

  1827. become

  1828. in Christ

  1829. in Hebrews chapter 2

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  1830. 9 to 10

  1831. the writer says that

1832. Jesus was made a little

  1833. lower than the angels

1834. so that he might taste

  1835. death for every one

  1836. of his family

  1837. in order to bring

  1838. many sons

  1839. to glory

  1840. in other words

  1841. or in C.S. Lewis'

  1842. words

  1843. the son of man

  1844. became a man

  1845. in order that men

  1846. might become

  1847. sons of God

  1848. the son of God

  1849. became a man

  1850. in order that men

  1851. might become

  1852. sons of God

  1853. and that's the final

  1854. surprise

  1855. brothers and sisters

  1856. when Jesus restores us

  1857. to a new humanity

  1858. and a new heavens

  1859. and a new earth

  1860. he will not

  1861. take us back

1862. to Adam in the garden

1863. the story of the Bible

1864. is not from a garden

  1865. to a garden

  1866. it's from a garden

  1867. to a garden

1868. in the middle of the Bible

  1869. to a garden city

  1870. there is a progression

  1871. we will be

  1872. co-heirs

  1873. with Christ

  1874. Adam was made

  1875. a little lower

  1876. than the angels

  1877. but when Jesus

  1878. takes us to that

  1879. garden city

  1880. we will rule

  1881. angels

  1882. isn't that what Paul

  1883. says in 1 Corinthians 6

  1884. do you not know

  1885. that the saints

  1886. will judge the world

  1887. do you not know

  1888. that you will judge

  1889. angels

  1890. Adam never judged

  1891. an angel

  1892. but you

  1893. puny

  1894. little you

  1895. one day

  1896. will sit

  1897. and judge

  1898. angels

  1899. oh Lord

  1900. our Lord

  1901. how majestic

  1902. is your name

  1903. in all the earth

  1904. let us pray

  1905. God
