  1. We're on page 56, Exodus 3.

  2. Last week we spent our time thinking about the salvation of God.

  3. ! The narrative up to verse 12 was thinking about the salvation delivered to Moses by God.

  4. ! That he himself received, was then to go and proclaim to his people,

  5. and then ultimately he was going to go and proclaim it to the self-appointed God of the world, Pharaoh.

  6. A message of deliverance in direct opposition to this Pharaoh.

  7. And we thought about how salvation, this message of salvation, it's shocking,

  8. because it comes to people who really, really don't deserve it.

  9. People like you and me.

  10. We thought about how it's always plan A, it's never plan B.

  11. It's never plan B.

  12. From the beginning of eternity, God chose a people,

  13. and he's been unfolding that plan throughout history.

  14. Even in the darkest moments of history, God has always been on track, 100% with plan A.

  15. And that the goal of worship, it wasn't simply that we'd have our sins paid for,

  16. that our feeling of guilt would be alleviated, that we'd get to go to heaven.

  17. The goal of salvation is that we might bow the knee and become worshippers of this living God.

  18. But this morning, we're taking a turn from just thinking about the salvation of God

  19. to thinking about the God of salvation in the remainder of chapter 3.

  20. The reason we're doing that is because that's the turn the narrative takes in verse 13.

  21. And Moses asks in verse 13 the logical question about hearing such a plan.

  22. A question that if you were put in Moses' shoes,

  23. after hearing this great plan of salvation, you would ask too.

  24. Although it may be in different words.

  25. Salvation is proclaimed.

  26. And Moses says,

  27. Sorry, who are you?

  28. Who are you?

  29. Or verse 13, to put it in Moses' words,

  30. What is your name?

  31. Now, what Moses isn't doing is he's not asking for a personal introduction over coffee at the end of church.

  32. He's not going,

  33. Oh, hi, I'm Adam.

  34. What's your name?

  35. Oh, God.

  36. Great.

  37. Great.

  38. Nice to meet you.

  39. Now, what he's doing is asking for God's personal credentials.

  40. He's heard of this epic, colossal salvation.

  41. And he says,

  42. Who are you?

  43. What qualifies you to be able to defeat Moses,

  44. to defeat Pharaoh?

  45. And deliver your people?

  46. And the thing is,

  47. if you've never asked that question this morning,

  48. then I don't think I did a very good job last week,

  49. describing what salvation is like.

  50. Or maybe it's just that you struggle to see the insurmountable task of saving people like you and me.

  51. Saving people like us.

  52. Because the salvation that God's promised,

  53. it is huge.

  54. Saving a bunch of enslaved sufferers,

  55. who have been trapped for 400 years,

  56. never knowing what a day off felt like.

  57. And they're moving them to a free people,

  58. in a beautiful,

  59. vast land,

  60. under the care and protection,

  61. of a good,

  62. gracious,

  63. loving God.

  64. And we described last week,

  65. didn't we,

  66. that that is just a picture of what comes to us in Christ.

  67. Going from people who are enslaved to sin and Satan,

  68. trapped by our own deceptive hearts,

  69. corrupt,

  70. living with the consequences of a broken world.

  71. We move from that to people who are raised,

  72. from death to life,

  73. to know and worship an eternal God,

  74. in perfect perfection,

  75. a world remade.

  76. Who could do all of this?

  77. Who could deliver on that kind of salvation?

  78. The thing is,

  79. we ask that question in a much smaller way,

  80. every morning when we wake up,

  81. don't we?

  82. Is God able to get me through today?

  83. Am I actually going to make it?

  84. By the end of today,

  85. am I still going to be a Christian?

  86. You know,

  87. the difficulties,

  88. day after day,

  89. alone,

  90. are enough to not just ask,

  91. can God deliver eternal salvation,

  92. but can he deliver me today?

  93. Today,

  94. the task is great,

  95. and Moses know the people,

  96. people like you and me,

  97. are going to want to know,

  98. who are you?

  99. Who are you that you can deliver?

  100. And God responds with two things,

  101. two things that you really need to know,

  102. two things you need to know about God,

  103. two realities about him,

  104. that you need to set and fix your hearts upon,

  105. in order to have confidence,

  106. that God can deliver on this salvation.

  107. And that's how we're going to split our time up,

  108. today,

  109. we're going to look at these two things,

  110. and the first thing that you need to know,

  111. is his name.

  112. Halfway through verse 13,

  113. read with me.

  114. And when they asked me,

  115. what is his name?

  116. What shall I say to them?

  117. And God said to Moses,

  118. I am who I am.

  119. And he said,

  120. say this to the people of Israel,

  121. I am,

  122. has sent me to you.

  123. He gives a mysterious name,

  124. doesn't he?

  125. Translated in the Old Testament,

  126. with the letters L-O-R-D,

  127. in block capitals,

  128. it's there in verse 15 as well.

  129. It's the same I am,

  130. but now just translated.

  131. But it's important,

  132. this isn't a title.

  133. You know,

  134. we see Lord scattered throughout the Bible

  135. as a title,

  136. an ascription,

  137. but it's not the same as saying,

  138. you know,

  139. he's a shepherd,

  140. or a king,

  141. or a father.

  142. It's not just a title,

  143. this is his name,

  144. this is who he is,

  145. in and of himself.

  146. And names are really important,

  147. aren't they?

  148. There's nothing like being greeted

  149. at the end of the service,

  150. by your personal name.

  151. You know,

  152. I've only been here a few weeks,

  153. and yet people come up to me,

  154. and say,

  155. how's it going Adam?

  156. That personal,

  157. intimate connection,

  158. and here,

  159. the God of the universe,

  160. is revealing his name to his people,

  161. close communion with them.

  162. And there's so many things

  163. we could say about this name,

  164. but firstly,

  165. I am is,

  166. it's a mysterious name,

  167. isn't it?

  168. I am,

  169. is a mystery.

  170. And we can't really grasp

  171. the depths of what's going on.

  172. When someone says,

  173. you know,

  174. my name's Adam,

  175. we've got a context for it,

  176. and it seems normal.

  177. But just to say,

  178. if you asked me,

  179. what's your name,

  180. and I said,

  181. I am,

  182. you'd be,

  183. sorry,

  184. you are what?

  185. But Herman Babink,

  186. a hearer of mine,

  187. he has this great line,

  188. talking about this,

  189. and he says,

  190. God is that which he calls himself,

  191. and he calls himself

  192. that which he is.

  193. So,

  194. so when the people of Moses,

  195. people of Moses,

  196. they come and say,

  197. who is this God?

  198. When you say,

  199. yeah,

  200. who is God?

  201. Well,

  202. he just replies,

  203. God is.

  204. Any,

  205. any more questions?

  206. It just brings silence,

  207. doesn't it?

  208. Who is God?

  209. There is no adjective great enough to ascribe to him,

  210. just God is.

  211. We lisp with vocabulary to try and grasp the greatness of God.

  212. Even the greatest descriptions you've ever read by your greatest authors of God

  213. are pale shadows of who he really is.

  214. Even though we know true things concerning God,

  215. he's so far above us,

  216. so far beyond us,

  217. so far beyond our understanding that he's mysterious to us.

  218. And when confronted by the mystery,

  219. the awesomeness of this God,

  220. we can fall into some traps.

  221. Because I've spoken to a few of you,

  222. a few of you are like me,

  223. and you're prone to becoming a rationalist.

  224. Confronted with the great mystery of God,

  225. you try and explain away God's greatness.

  226. You think you can put him in a box,

  227. using your terms and your vocabularies and your own categories,

  228. and you try and explain him away,

  229. bringing him down.

  230. But then, as a few of you have met,

  231. I wouldn't say who,

  232. but you've tendencies to become a bit mystic,

  233. maybe a bit Welsh mystic.

  234. And you think God is so big,

  235. and so unknowable,

  236. and so grand that,

  237. well, this isn't Paul's temptation at all,

  238. but we start to think of what,

  239. well, we can think what we want of God.

  240. We can start thinking,

  241. yeah, no one can really know,

  242. because it's just so big.

  243. So we drag God down,

  244. and we just let him loose.

  245. But that's not the right response.

  246. The third response,

  247. and the right response,

  248. and the response we see of Moses,

  249. is that he becomes a worshipper.

  250. John, whether you're prone to rationalism,

  251. or mysticism,

  252. repent,

  253. and humbly come,

  254. and sit under what God has revealed of himself,

  255. and worship him,

  256. as the great I am.

  257. The great mysterious I am.

  258. You will never know everything about God.

  259. And yet he has revealed something of himself

  260. that you can grasp.

  261. But secondly,

  262. God reveals something else about his name.

  263. His name reveals that he's unchanging.

  264. God is immutable.

  265. He's eternally who he is.

  266. He reveals his name.

  267. This is a bit geeky,

  268. but some of you will be pleased to hear this.

  269. It's in the present form of the verb to be.

  270. So,

  271. you think,

  272. why does that matter?

  273. Well,

  274. it means that God is not,

  275. I was who I was.

  276. And it means that God is not,

  277. I will be who I will be.

  278. But it's I am.

  279. Eternally present.

  280. And this unchanging nature

  281. is the ground and source of his faithfulness.

  282. His faithfulness to his creation.

  283. We come,

  284. and we go,

  285. and we fluctuate,

  286. and we fade,

  287. and change.

  288. We have ups and downs,

  289. and yet God is the same.

  290. Yesterday,

  291. today,

  292. and forever,

  293. because he is eternally present,

  294. holding time in the palm of his hand,

  295. knowing nothing of the change of seasons

  296. affecting him.

  297. I am is unchanging.

  298. So when the people cry out,

  299. how do we know

  300. that you can save us?

  301. How do we know that you can deliver?

  302. Well then,

  303. just look down

  304. at verse 17.

  305. The reason you can know

  306. is because God has promised,

  307. and he does not change.

  308. How do you know?

  309. How do you know

  310. that you'll make it through the day?

  311. How do you know

  312. that God will come good

  313. on his promises to deliver you?

  314. Well, God does not change,

  315. and he has promised.

  316. But this one,

  317. I think,

  318. is a real kicker.

  319. Something that I don't think about

  320. at all,

  321. until confronted by passages like this.

  322. But I am.

  323. God,

  324. revealing his name,

  325. shows us

  326. that he is independent.

  327. Independent.

  328. With the kids,

  329. I've got everyone

  330. to take a big breath.

  331. But as that oxygen

  332. rushes into your lungs,

  333. you are dependent on it.

  334. You are dependent

  335. on the laws of physics,

  336. water.

  337. You're dependent

  338. on the breakfast

  339. you had this morning.

  340. We're dependent

  341. in every single way.

  342. But two,

  343. well,

  344. perhaps teenagers,

  345. most of all.

  346. You know,

  347. we long for independence,

  348. don't we?

  349. Can't wait to get off

  350. the shackles of our parents.

  351. But here's a harsh reality

  352. for you.

  353. You will never be independent.

  354. As long as you are

  355. a creature,

  356. you will forever be

  357. dependent on him.

  358. But being dependent

  359. on the God of the Bible

  360. is not a burden.

  361. It's a great joy,

  362. isn't it?

  363. To know that he is good

  364. and provides all your needs.

  365. For I am alone

  366. is independent,

  367. depending on nothing else,

  368. especially in his creation.

  369. And everything else

  370. is dependent on him.

  371. This is hard to grasp,

  372. but Psalm 50

  373. helps us a little.

  374. You can turn there

  375. if you want,

  376. Psalm 50.

  377. Or you can just listen.

  378. Listen to what

  379. Psalm 50 says.

  380. Starting with verse 7.

  381. I am God.

  382. Your God.

  383. Not for your sacrifices

  384. do I rebuke you,

  385. that your burnt offerings

  386. are continually before me.

  387. I will not accept

  388. a bull from your house

  389. or goats from your fold.

  390. Why?

  391. For every beast

  392. of the forest is mine,

  393. the cattle on a thousand hills.

  394. I know all the birds

  395. of the hills

  396. and all that moves

  397. in the field is mine.

  398. If I were hungry,

  399. God says,

  400. I would not tell you.

  401. For the world

  402. and its fullness of mine,

  403. do I eat the flesh of bulls

  404. or drink the blood of goats?

  405. Offer to God

  406. a sacrifice of thanksgiving

  407. and perform your vows

  408. to the Lord,

  409. the Most High,

  410. and call upon me

  411. in the day of trouble

  412. and I will deliver you

  413. and you shall glorify me.

  414. God needs nothing.

  415. Not even the sacrifices

  416. he's prescribed

  417. his people in the Old Testament.

  418. Silly question.

  419. Does God get hungry?

  420. Of course not,

  421. but even if he did,

  422. he wouldn't tell you

  423. because everything belongs to him.

  424. He owns everything

  425. because everything

  426. owes their existence to him.

  427. That includes Pharaoh

  428. who's about to go

  429. in opposition against him.

  430. God doesn't even need sacrifices.

  431. Again,

  432. silly question.

  433. Does God drink blood?

  434. Of course not.

  435. God does not need anything.

  436. And verse 21

  437. of Psalm 50

  438. finishes like this.

  439. You thought

  440. that I was one like you.

  441. But he's not.

  442. He needs nothing.

  443. Yet we reduce God down

  444. and think of him

  445. nothing more than someone

  446. we're kind of in relationship with.

  447. We think,

  448. you know,

  449. if I give God something,

  450. he'll give something back.

  451. We think God needs our help

  452. in order to accomplish

  453. his purposes.

  454. And we're so influenced

  455. by the culture surrounding us

  456. that we think

  457. I scratch your back,

  458. you'll scratch mine.

  459. We think God is like

  460. a divine vending machine.

  461. As long as I put

  462. the right money in,

  463. I'll get the right thing out.

  464. But God does not need

  465. anything from you.

  466. So,

  467. I struggle with this so much

  468. that he does not need anything.

  469. He's so other.

  470. But this is such good news.

  471. Because it leads to

  472. a really interesting observation.

  473. Moses wants to know

  474. who is God

  475. to go and fight

  476. Pharaoh.

  477. And you think

  478. the answer would come back,

  479. don't worry Moses,

  480. I'm bigger than Pharaoh.

  481. Pharaoh.

  482. That's how we often pray,

  483. isn't it?

  484. You know,

  485. I've got this problem,

  486. and then we pray,

  487. but thank you

  488. that you're bigger than

  489. dot, dot, dot.

  490. But that's not

  491. his response.

  492. His response is,

  493. I am.

  494. Because if he said,

  495. I'm greater than Pharaoh,

  496. that would kind of

  497. put God on just

  498. a continuum,

  499. a spectrum with Pharaoh.

  500. I'm sure many of you

  501. remember playing

  502. Top Trumps as a kid.

  503. Children,

  504. maybe you still play with them

  505. and have them littered

  506. around your living room floor.

  507. And you're always hoping,

  508. aren't you,

  509. that you've got the car

  510. that beats the car

  511. your friend has.

  512. You know,

  513. the car that drives

  514. the fastest,

  515. or the snake

  516. that has the most venom.

  517. Or the animal

  518. that's just a bit bigger

  519. and faster.

  520. And as great as

  521. Top Trumps is,

  522. that is not

  523. what is going on here.

  524. God is not just

  525. the next Top Trump card

  526. up from Pharaoh.

  527. It's not on a continuum

  528. where God has

  529. slightly higher stats

  530. than Pharaoh.

  531. That would constantly

  532. leave you worried,

  533. wouldn't it?

  534. But what if one day

  535. someone plays

  536. the next Top Trump card up?

  537. What if one day

  538. there's a bigger God?

  539. What if there's

  540. someone greater

  541. that can thwart

  542. those prayers?

  543. God simply answers,

  544. I am.

  545. Even Pharaoh,

  546. even the game,

  547. owns its dependence

  548. on me.

  549. God is not on a spectrum

  550. with Satan.

  551. You don't just have to hope

  552. that God is further

  553. up the spectrum

  554. than Satan.

  555. Nothing is too difficult

  556. for him.

  557. Because nothing

  558. compares to him.

  559. We see that a little,

  560. don't we?

  561. When Moses

  562. hears from God

  563. what Pharaoh's

  564. response is going to be.

  565. You look down

  566. back at our passage,

  567. he even says

  568. what Pharaoh's

  569. response is going to be.

  570. He knows what

  571. Pharaoh's response

  572. is going to be

  573. in the future

  574. to what God does

  575. because even Pharaoh

  576. is dependent on him.

  577. later on Romans 9,

  578. Paul tells us that

  579. even Pharaoh was

  580. raised up so that

  581. God might display

  582. his glory in him.

  583. Everything in this world

  584. is dependent on God

  585. and displays his glory.

  586. And our big problem,

  587. it's always good

  588. isn't it to hear

  589. that line from a

  590. 27 year old preacher

  591. who has half the life

  592. experience of most of you.

  593. But,

  594. our big problem,

  595. we stumble again

  596. and again

  597. into thinking

  598. that God

  599. is like us.

  600. we think,

  601. do you know what,

  602. I'm finding this

  603. really hard.

  604. And we think,

  605. oh well,

  606. God must find things

  607. hard too.

  608. God finds nothing

  609. difficult.

  610. We ought to have

  611. great thoughts

  612. of God's

  613. and we so easily

  614. allow our thoughts

  615. to become small

  616. and narrow.

  617. He is a great

  618. mystery, isn't it?

  619. But maybe you're

  620. struggling to grasp

  621. the concepts.

  622. But these are just

  623. words that are

  624. coming to you

  625. and you're finding

  626. it difficult to

  627. really wrap your

  628. head around them.

  629. Well,

  630. God knows that

  631. we might struggle

  632. and so he gives us

  633. a picture of it

  634. as well.

  635. We read about it

  636. today and talked

  637. about it last week.

  638. But it's there

  639. in the burning bush.

  640. Just think about it.

  641. All we've described

  642. is displayed for us

  643. in the fire

  644. of the burning bush.

  645. I am

  646. revealed as

  647. the God

  648. who is

  649. mysterious.

  650. This mysterious

  651. fire in the midst

  652. of the bush.

  653. Unchanging fire,

  654. perpetually burning

  655. and in need

  656. of nothing

  657. in the midst

  658. of the bush

  659. yet completely

  660. independent of it.

  661. I am God.

  662. The God of Abraham,

  663. Isaac and Jacob.

  664. The God of us

  665. this morning

  666. is the self-sufficient

  667. eternally burning

  668. fire who requires

  669. nothing to exist.

  670. But the picture

  671. of the burning bush

  672. is also really

  673. comforting.

  674. Because where is

  675. the fire?

  676. fire?

  677. Well the fire

  678. being in the midst

  679. of the bush

  680. leads to our

  681. second point.

  682. Just look down

  683. at verse 15

  684. of our passage.

  685. God also said

  686. to Moses

  687. say this to the

  688. people of Israel

  689. the Lord

  690. the God

  691. of your fathers

  692. the God

  693. of Abraham

  694. the God

  695. of Isaac

  696. the God

  697. of Jacob

  698. has sent me

  699. to you.

  700. this is my name

  701. forever

  702. and thus

  703. I am to be

  704. remembered

  705. throughout all

  706. generations.

  707. Hearing God

  708. as I am

  709. should just

  710. provoke awe

  711. and wonder.

  712. But hearing

  713. that I am

  714. is your God

  715. should just

  716. bring pure joy.

  717. I just think

  718. this is the best

  719. news.

  720. The picture

  721. of the burning

  722. bush helps us

  723. understand it

  724. because the

  725. self-burning

  726. perpetual

  727. eternal fire

  728. of God

  729. isn't just

  730. kind of

  731. floating around

  732. abstractly

  733. but he is

  734. in the midst

  735. of the bush

  736. and the bush

  737. picture his

  738. people.

  739. God

  740. is in the midst

  741. of his people.

  742. I am

  743. is God

  744. but I am

  745. is your God.

  746. In the same

  747. breath of telling

  748. of his otherness

  749. he speaks to

  750. his closeness

  751. his condescension

  752. again we sang

  753. with the kids

  754. earlier

  755. closest

  756. than the closest

  757. friend.

  758. And that's

  759. what's going

  760. on here.

  761. He doesn't

  762. need us.

  763. He doesn't

  764. need anything

  765. and yet

  766. he wants

  767. you.

  768. He wants

  769. to be

  770. in the midst

  771. of his people.

  772. He longs

  773. to be

  774. with you.

  775. So God

  776. stoops down

  777. to make it

  778. a way

  779. to make it

  780. possible

  781. for us

  782. to be

  783. with him

  784. and for

  785. him to

  786. be with

  787. us.

  788. And we

  789. talked about

  790. it last

  791. time didn't

  792. we?

  793. That he

  794. knows,

  795. he sees,

  796. he cares

  797. about the

  798. affliction of

  799. his people

  800. and he's

  801. not watching

  802. it on the

  803. news

  804. abstractly

  805. and distantly

  806. this

  807. independent

  808. burning fire

  809. no he's

  810. with his

  811. people

  812. experiencing

  813. it and

  814. knowing

  815. and caring

  816. and he

  817. stretches

  818. out his

  819. mighty

  820. arm

  821. to deliver

  822. his

  823. people.

  824. God is

  825. not aloof

  826. he is

  827. close

  828. and this

  829. God

  830. is your

  831. God

  832. he's the

  833. same

  834. he has

  835. seen

  836. your

  837. suffering

  838. you know

  839. I always

  840. think

  841. you look

  842. around a

  843. congregation

  844. and there's

  845. no one

  846. that hasn't

  847. had at

  848. least

  849. some

  850. difficulties

  851. in the

  852. week

  853. but yet

  854. God

  855. has seen

  856. it

  857. even if

  858. we don't

  859. show it

  860. on our

  861. faces

  862. and he's

  863. seen

  864. your

  865. sin

  866. he's

  867. seen

  868. that

  869. thing

  870. that

  871. we

  872. stumble

  873. into

  874. again

  875. and

  876. again

  877. he's

  878. seen

  879. your

  880. suffering

  881. and he

  882. has

  883. seen

  884. your

  885. sin

  886. and he

  887. cares

  888. for you

  889. he has

  890. heard the

  891. prayers

  892. of his

  893. people

  894. and he's

  895. acted

  896. in history

  897. in a

  898. way

  899. once and

  900. for all

  901. to deliver

  902. us

  903. but each

  904. day

  905. he hears

  906. the prayers

  907. of his

  908. people

  909. and tends

  910. to them

  911. sustaining

  912. them

  913. caring for

  914. them

  915. taking them

  916. home

  917. perhaps you

  918. believe in

  919. God

  920. but more in

  921. just kind of an

  922. abstract way

  923. you don't know

  924. God as your

  925. God

  926. you kind of

  927. believe he's

  928. out there

  929. I urge you to

  930. come and bow

  931. the knee to him

  932. that you might

  933. know him as your

  934. God

  935. because think about

  936. the Egyptians

  937. is the fact

  938. that God

  939. is I

  940. am

  941. good news

  942. to them

  943. it's

  944. terrifying

  945. but to know

  946. that I

  947. am

  948. is your

  949. God

  950. that brings

  951. the greatest

  952. comfort

  953. you know

  954. in Exodus

  955. we see

  956. God

  957. mightily

  958. displaying his

  959. name

  960. I am

  961. as he

  962. stretches

  963. out his

  964. arm

  965. with

  966. miraculous

  967. plagues

  968. sent on

  969. Egypt

  970. to deliver

  971. his

  972. people

  973. the

  974. crossing

  975. of the

  976. Red

  977. Sea

  978. but in

  979. the same

  980. way

  981. last week

  982. we saw

  983. that was

  984. just a

  985. shadow

  986. well it's

  987. just a

  988. shadow

  989. this time

  990. isn't it

  991. in John's

  992. gospel

  993. John

  994. records

  995. for us

  996. Jesus

  997. drawing on

  998. this

  999. revelation

  1000. of his

  1001. name

  1002. I

  1003. am

  1004. again

  1005. and

  1006. again

  1007. I

  1008. am

  1009. we see

  1010. Jesus

  1011. is the

  1012. fulfillment

  1013. of I

  1014. am

  1015. God

  1016. dwelling

  1017. with his

  1018. people

  1019. in the

  1020. midst

  1021. of his

  1022. people

  1023. Jesus

  1024. says

  1025. I

  1026. am

  1027. the

  1028. bread

  1029. of

  1030. life

  1031. I

  1032. am

  1033. the

  1034. light

  1035. of

  1036. the

  1037. world

  1038. I

  1039. am

  1040. the

  1041. door

  1042. I

  1043. am

  1044. the

  1045. good

  1046. shepherd

  1047. I

  1048. am

  1049. the

  1050. resurrection

  1051. and the

  1052. life

  1053. in the

  1054. same

  1055. way

  1056. I

  1057. am

  1058. the

  1059. way

  1060. the

  1061. truth

  1062. and

  1063. the

  1064. life

  1065. I

  1066. am

  1067. the

  1068. true

  1069. vine

  1070. and

  1071. Jesus

  1072. summarizes

  1073. it

  1074. by saying

  1075. before

  1076. Abraham

  1077. was I

  1078. am

  1079. and I

  1080. am

  1081. is

  1082. me

  1083. Jesus

  1084. stood

  1085. walking

  1086. talking

  1087. seeing

  1088. knowing

  1089. caring

  1090. is

  1091. obviously

  1092. with his

  1093. people

  1094. that here

  1095. he's revealing

  1096. that he's

  1097. the God

  1098. of his

  1099. people

  1100. each

  1101. time

  1102. making it

  1103. clearer

  1104. and clearer

  1105. and clearer

  1106. as he

  1107. is identifying

  1108. himself

  1109. with

  1110. I am

  1111. the

  1112. conversations

  1113. I've

  1114. had

  1115. with

  1116. Muslims

  1117. where

  1118. they

  1119. say

  1120. Jesus

  1121. never

  1122. says

  1123. he's

  1124. God

  1125. it

  1126. never

  1127. comes

  1128. out

  1129. of his

  1130. mouth

  1131. well the

  1132. Jews

  1133. were so

  1134. clear

  1135. what

  1136. Jesus

  1137. was

  1138. claiming

  1139. as he

  1140. says

  1141. I am

  1142. that they

  1143. sought to

  1144. stone him

  1145. for

  1146. blasphemy

  1147. make no

  1148. mistake

  1149. what Jesus

  1150. is claiming

  1151. for them

  1152. but we

  1153. shouldn't be

  1154. surprised

  1155. should we

  1156. because the

  1157. burning

  1158. bush is

  1159. a picture

  1160. of the

  1161. incarnation

  1162. I am

  1163. in the

  1164. midst

  1165. of his

  1166. people

  1167. but it's

  1168. not just

  1169. a picture

  1170. this is

  1171. the pre-incarnate

  1172. Jesus

  1173. revealing what

  1174. God will do

  1175. in the

  1176. climax of

  1177. history

  1178. when he

  1179. doesn't just

  1180. appear for a

  1181. moment in

  1182. time in a

  1183. bush but

  1184. when he

  1185. truly becomes

  1186. God with

  1187. us

  1188. it's a

  1189. detail that

  1190. we skimmed

  1191. over last

  1192. week

  1193. but Moses

  1194. saw in

  1195. the bush

  1196. a being

  1197. in human

  1198. form

  1199. the Bible

  1200. says

  1201. the angel

  1202. of the

  1203. Lord

  1204. appeared to

  1205. him in

  1206. fires of

  1207. flame

  1208. from within

  1209. the bush

  1210. but

  1211. this must

  1212. be Jesus

  1213. like no

  1214. angel would

  1215. accept worship

  1216. from Moses

  1217. let alone

  1218. command it

  1219. the angel

  1220. of the

  1221. Lord

  1222. who is

  1223. with God

  1224. and is

  1225. God

  1226. revealing

  1227. himself

  1228. this could

  1229. be no

  1230. other person

  1231. than the

  1232. second person

  1233. of the

  1234. Trinity

  1235. Jesus

  1236. revealing

  1237. himself as

  1238. I am

  1239. coming to

  1240. rescue

  1241. his people

  1242. and this

  1243. astounding

  1244. picture

  1245. what is

  1246. it makes

  1247. so much

  1248. sense

  1249. of John

  1250. 18

  1251. Jesus in

  1252. the garden

  1253. of Gethsemane

  1254. the soldiers

  1255. come seeking

  1256. to arrest

  1257. Jesus and

  1258. hand him

  1259. over to the

  1260. Jews to

  1261. have him

  1262. put on

  1263. trial and

  1264. killed

  1265. and then

  1266. verse 4

  1267. of John

  1268. 18

  1269. Jesus

  1270. knowing

  1271. all that

  1272. would happen

  1273. to him

  1274. just like he

  1275. knows exactly

  1276. what will

  1277. happen with

  1278. Pharaoh and

  1279. the unfolding

  1280. of his plan

  1281. then

  1282. here he knows

  1283. again

  1284. he came

  1285. forward and

  1286. he said to

  1287. them

  1288. whom do you

  1289. seek

  1290. they answered

  1291. him

  1292. Jesus of

  1293. Nazareth

  1294. and Jesus

  1295. said to

  1296. them

  1297. I am

  1298. and they

  1299. fell to

  1300. the ground

  1301. they drew

  1302. back and

  1303. fell to

  1304. the ground

  1305. they drew

  1306. back and

  1307. fell to

  1308. the ground

  1309. like Moses

  1310. did when he

  1311. saw Jesus

  1312. in the burning

  1313. bush

  1314. simply by

  1315. revealing that

  1316. he is the

  1317. ancient of

  1318. days

  1319. I am

  1320. present in

  1321. their midst

  1322. but the

  1323. thing is

  1324. I am

  1325. I am

  1326. has not

  1327. come down

  1328. to stretch

  1329. out his

  1330. arm in

  1331. mighty acts

  1332. and miracles

  1333. but by

  1334. simply

  1335. and humbly

  1336. stretching out

  1337. his arms

  1338. on a cross

  1339. not to

  1340. defeat

  1341. Pharaoh

  1342. but to

  1343. defeat

  1344. sin

  1345. and death

  1346. the infinite

  1347. God

  1348. clothed in

  1349. humanity

  1350. I am

  1351. making it

  1352. possible

  1353. forever

  1354. to be

  1355. God

  1356. with us

  1357. what do

  1358. you need

  1359. to know

  1360. what do

  1361. you need

  1362. to know

  1363. in order

  1364. to have

  1365. confidence

  1366. that God

  1367. can accomplish

  1368. his purposes

  1369. that God

  1370. really can

  1371. come good

  1372. on all

  1373. he's

  1374. promised

  1375. sure

  1387. to know

  1388. that I
