  1. I want us to turn the seat this morning to these verses that we've read together from Philippians chapter 4.

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  2. ! We'll be looking especially at the beginning of the fourth verse where Paul says,

  3. ! Rejoice in the Lord always! I will say it again, rejoice!

  4. Let your gentleness be evident to all the Lord is near.

  5. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving,

  6. present your requests to God.

  7. And the peace of God which passes all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

  8. There's one thing that unites us in our humanity.

  9. It's the fact that no matter how much we may have or how little we may have,

  10. how well things are going or how badly things may be going,

  11. there is almost no one on this planet who is free from anxiety.

  12. And the fallout from being anxious or worrying about the issues of life.

  13. And that's true not just out there in the wider worlds for people who are not Christians,

  14. but it's also true within the family of God's people.

  15. To become a Christian is not to be delivered from the world and all its pressures and stresses.

  16. The Lord Jesus Christ told his disciples on the night before he was betrayed

  17. that he was not taking them out of the world, but they would be in the world,

  18. exposed to all the rigors of life in a fallen world, all the pressures that it brings to bear upon us.

  19. But because they were not of the world, they would have resources at their disposal

  20. that those who are not yet Christians do not have.

  21. And those resources that come ultimately from God in heaven are what will keep us,

  22. what will carry us, what will enable us to rise above the trials and tribulations of the world

  23. and of life in the world.

  24. If you're familiar with the book of Philippians, it's somewhat enigmatic

  25. in that even though at a superficial reading it seems to be a letter written to a church

  26. where everything was going wonderfully well.

  27. Because there's so much said about joy and about the need to rejoice in the letter to the Philippians

  28. that it was said by an older generation of commentators that this was the epistle of joy.

  29. It stood out as being different from so many of the other New Testament letters

  30. because there was no absolutely obvious problem that was troubling the Philippian congregation.

  31. But the strange thing about that is that if you use the argument or come with the premise

  32. that you only use the strongest medicine for the most serious ailments,

  33. then when you come to Philippians chapter 2 you find what is perhaps some of the strongest theological medicine

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  34. that the Apostle Paul administers in any of the New Testament contexts to which he speaks.

  35. He reaches for language in what is sometimes called the Carmen Christi or the hymns of the Lord Jesus Christ

  36. where he speaks of the Lord Jesus Christ as the one who did not see equality with God

  37. as something to be grasped or held on to, but rather he humbled himself and made himself of no reputation

  38. and became obedient unto death, even death upon the cross.

  39. That extraordinary and eloquent and lyrical portrayal of unfathomable truths of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  40. And there are parts of the statement that Paul issues there that are almost impossible to fathom

  41. with the limits of a fallen human mind.

  42. But Paul reaches for that language.

  43. He dispenses that pastoral medicine in the context of relationships that were obviously struggling in that congregation

  44. and the implications for those struggling relationships in the lives of individual believers.

  45. And the fourth chapter bears testimony to that because he begins by pleading with two key women

  46. in that congregation, Euodia and Syntyche, to work well together.

  47. Presumably because they were not working well together.

  48. And that one disrupted relationship was having significant impact upon the whole church

  49. and its life and work and witness in the area where it was placed.

  50. But then Paul says this.

  51. You should rejoice in the midst of these struggles, in the midst of these troubles.

  52. You should rejoice.

  53. And he says emphatically, rejoice in the Lord always.

  54. I say it again, rejoice because the Lord is near.

  55. But then he goes on in the rest of that passage that we read together

  56. to make an extraordinary statement about how we respond to those things that disturb us in life.

  57. And he gives us, let me try and break it down into four component parts.

  58. In this passage Paul issues two commands

  59. to which he attaches one promise

  60. which he then backs up with a word of personal testimony

  61. and then presses home

  62. with one all-important key truth

  63. that is the key to everything that he is saying.

  64. Two commands, a promise, a testimony

  65. and one all-important key

  66. that holds them together.

  67. The commands are very obvious.

  68. They're there written in verses 6 and 7.

  69. He says,

  70. Do not be anxious for anything.

  71. That's the first of the two commands.

  72. Do not be anxious for anything.

  73. I may come across to us

  74. this fairly innocuous language

  75. in our English translation.

  76. It's the kind of thing that we might say to one another

  77. in the course of ordinary conversation.

  78. But in the language that Paul was using,

  79. the Greek language,

  80. he is able to inject greater emphasis,

  81. greater force to what he's saying

  82. and he uses words that were available to him

  83. to make this a very emphatic command that he was issued.

  84. Be anxious about absolutely nothing.

  85. There is no level of issue in life

  86. that we should allow to so get under our skin

  87. that it leads us to anxiety,

  88. to worry and fretfulness.

  89. That may well be that Paul was bearing in mind

  90. what Jesus himself had said

  91. in his teaching of the Sermon on the Mount.

  92. Because there the Lord Jesus Christ tells people,

  93. which of you by being anxious can add a single hour

  94. to the length of your life

  95. or a single cubit to the height of your stature

  96. depending on which way you read that statement

  97. in the Gospel of Matthew.

  98. But the Lord Jesus Christ speaks about the futility

  99. of anxiety.

  100. And even though we face issues

  101. that do indeed perplex us in life,

  102. do indeed disturb us in life

  103. because they are not things that we would choose for ourselves,

  104. they have come uninvited into our lives,

  105. it's very easy to allow those things

  106. to loom so large on our horizons

  107. that they become overwhelming

  108. and undermining in our experience,

  109. that they disturb the tranquility,

  110. the peace, the equilibrium of our life.

  111. And Jesus is simply stating the obvious.

  112. Actually, being anxious about those things

  113. is only adding insult to injury.

  114. Far from solving any problems

  115. by fretting about them

  116. because they're beyond your control,

  117. by allowing them to consume your thinking time

  118. and consume your passions,

  119. actually, you're only making

  120. a bad situation even worse

  121. by worrying about those things

  122. and becoming consumed about those things

  123. for the very simple reason

  124. they belong to that category of things in life

  125. that are beyond our control.

  126. The very fact that they are disturbing us

  127. is because they are not issues necessarily

  128. of our own making.

  129. They have come to us

  130. as uninvited guests in our lives.

  131. And Paul was saying that to the Philippians.

  132. There will be those kind of issues

  133. and there are those kind of issues

  134. that are disturbing the peace

  135. in the congregation of Philippi

  136. because they're disturbing the peace

  137. of your lives.

  138. And Paul says, emphatically,

  139. do not allow them to loom so large

  140. on the horizon of your lives

  141. that they eclipse everything else,

  142. not least the sovereign hand

  143. of an all-controlling God

  144. and the promised grace

  145. that comes to us

  146. through a wonderful Savior,

  147. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  148. And almost immediately,

  149. without drawing a breath,

  150. he has the second command.

  151. If he has said,

  152. in such emphatic language,

  153. be anxious about absolutely nothing,

  154. he goes on to say about,

  155. by way of response,

  156. rather pray about absolutely everything.

  157. So with equal force,

  158. he counterbalances the negative statement

  159. that he has just made.

  160. Do not be anxious about anything.

  161. Rather, instead,

  162. you should pray about everything.

  163. And in issuing that command,

  164. he is echoing again

  165. what the Lord Jesus Christ said,

  166. that we are to pray at all times.

  167. But that doesn't mean to say

  168. that we are actively praying,

  169. consciously praying,

  170. every moment of every day,

  171. waking or sleeping.

  172. But rather,

  173. he is saying that as the children of God,

  174. we should have that prayerful spirit,

  175. that sense of our

  176. permanent,

  177. 24-7 access

  178. to the throne of God in heaven,

  179. through the mediation of Jesus Christ,

  180. our great high priest,

  181. of whom we were reminded

  182. in Hebrews chapter 4,

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  183. just a few moments ago,

  184. that we should be so

  185. utterly aware

  186. of that access that we have

  187. to the Father,

  188. that openness of communication

  189. to the Father in heaven,

  190. that we should take full advantage,

  191. of that line of communication.

  192. And it's such a relief

  193. in so many spheres of life,

  194. in a working environment,

  195. for example,

  196. where you are facing the challenges,

  197. perhaps of a new job,

  198. or the ongoing challenges

  199. of a job that always

  200. has issues that need to be addressed,

  201. that if you were left

  202. merely to face them by yourselves,

  203. it would be an overwhelming

  204. and a daunting thing,

  205. but the fact that you know,

  206. because of your line management,

  207. you've got access

  208. to those who are more experienced,

  209. who've got greater wisdom,

  210. who've got a higher level

  211. of responsibility

  212. that you have,

  213. that you are able

  214. to go to them

  215. and bring your needs to them

  216. at any hour of the day

  217. if you so need to.

  218. Well, here is Paul reminding us

  219. that we have access

  220. access to the High King of Heaven,

  221. that we have a door

  222. that is never closed,

  223. that brings us into the very presence

  224. of God Himself,

  225. gives us the ear

  226. of the Lord of all the universe,

  227. the God who not only made

  228. all things visible and invisible,

  229. but the God who,

  230. through His mighty Word,

  231. is controlling and directing

  232. absolutely everything

  233. that there is,

  234. causing all things

  235. to work together

  236. ultimately for the good

  237. of those who are His children,

  238. called according to His purpose

  239. and who love Him,

  240. but also for the glory

  241. of His name.

  242. And to be reminded of that,

  243. that God is working

  244. all things for His own glory

  245. as well as for His people's good,

  246. means that even though

  247. there are 101 things

  248. and more in life,

  249. that we will never ever

  250. fathom in this life,

  251. when the story is finally

  252. told in all its fullness,

  253. when all the mysteries of life

  254. are finally revealed,

  255. we will realize

  256. that those circumstances

  257. that descended upon us in life,

  258. that caused us such angst

  259. and grief

  260. in the providence of God,

  261. were used in an extraordinary way

  262. for the honor of His name.

  263. And for a greater appreciation

  264. of grace.

  265. If you want the ultimate proof of that,

  266. think of the cross

  267. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  268. The cross

  269. at which Jesus did not balk,

  270. He became obedient unto death,

  271. even death upon a cross,

  272. but the cross over which

  273. Jesus agonized.

  274. You cannot fully understand

  275. what happened at Calvary

  276. without grasping something

  277. of what took place

  278. in Gethsemane,

  279. where the Lord Jesus Christ,

  280. confronted with the

  281. looming shadow

  282. of that Roman gibbet

  283. on which He would be

  284. immolated the next day,

  285. pleads with the Father,

  286. agonizes in prayer

  287. with the Father,

  288. if it be possible,

  289. let this cup

  290. pass from me.

  291. If there is another way,

  292. Father,

  293. then let it happen.

  294. And as far as

  295. the watching world

  296. was concerned

  297. and as far as

  298. His disciples were concerned,

  299. what unfolded

  300. when that prayer

  301. was not answered

  302. or so it seemed.

  303. And Jesus was handed over

  304. to the wicked men

  305. who crucified Him

  306. that next day.

  307. But even though

  308. His disciples thought

  309. this is the end,

  310. this is disaster,

  311. everything is collapsing

  312. in the worst imaginable way,

  313. that the cross,

  314. as Jesus Himself

  315. knew and prayed

  316. in anticipation

  317. of that event,

  318. was the pinnacle

  319. of glory.

  320. The place where

  321. He was glorified,

  322. the place where

  323. His Father was glorified,

  324. and where salvation

  325. was secured

  326. for His people

  327. and for a cosmos

  328. under the curse of sin.

  329. And if it was true

  330. that that

  331. was what unfolded

  332. through the darkness

  333. of the cross

  334. into the light

  335. of the resurrection

  336. and into the

  337. spread of that light

  338. through the preaching

  339. of the gospel

  340. through the ages,

  341. then how much more

  342. could we take comfort

  343. from this promise,

  344. this encouragement

  345. that we have

  346. that we are to go

  347. to God

  348. in prayer

  349. with the issues

  350. that we face in life

  351. rather than privately

  352. !

  353. and we are to

  354. seek to shoulder

  355. them ourselves

  356. in a way

  357. that will only crush us.

  358. There are the two commands

  359. but they are

  360. swiftly followed

  361. by a promise

  362. that when we do this,

  363. when we consciously

  364. and deliberately

  365. refuse

  366. to be agitated

  367. by anything

  368. and allow it

  369. to become oppressive

  370. to us,

  371. but instead pray

  372. about all the

  373. different issues

  374. that confront us

  375. in life.

  376. Then,

  377. he says,

  378. the peace of God

  379. which transcends

  380. all human understanding

  381. will guard,

  382. garrison

  383. your hearts

  384. and minds

  385. in Christ Jesus

  386. our Lord.

  387. There's a number

  388. of things about that

  389. that are worth

  390. teasing out.

  391. The first is,

  392. what does he mean

  393. when he talks about

  394. the peace of God

  395. which passes

  396. understanding?

  397. Well,

  398. it can't mean

  399. peace with God,

  400. the kind of peace

  401. that he speaks of

  402. in relation to

  403. what it means

  404. to be justified

  405. by grace

  406. through the Lord

  407. Jesus Christ.

  408. Romans chapter 5,

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  409. Paul says,

  410. therefore,

  411. being justified

  412. by faith

  413. we have peace

  414. with God.

  415. The God

  416. who was against us

  417. because we were

  418. rebel sinners

  419. and we who were

  420. against God

  421. because we were

  422. rebels by nature

  423. and rebels by choice

  424. and because that

  425. relationship,

  426. the relationship

  427. for which we were

  428. made,

  429. but the relationship

  430. in which we find

  431. breach

  432. and ruptured

  433. relationship

  434. because of our

  435. sin and our

  436. guilt and

  437. disobedience,

  438. that there is

  439. a reconciliation

  440. between alienated

  441. parties in that

  442. relationship

  443. when we are

  444. justified.

  445. When our sins

  446. are forgiven

  447. because our sins

  448. have been

  449. reckoned to

  450. Christ

  451. and laid upon

  452. him

  453. and we are

  454. reckoned

  455. righteous

  456. in God's

  457. sight

  458. because the

  459. righteousness

  460. of Christ

  461. manifests

  462. through the

  463. life that

  464. fulfilled all

  465. righteousness

  466. by complete

  467. obedience to

  468. God's law

  469. was reckoned

  470. to be ours.

  471. So that great

  472. exchange that

  473. took place

  474. at Calvary

  475. where what was

  476. rightly ours

  477. became his

  478. and what was

  479. rightly his

  480. became ours,

  481. the effect of

  482. that was that

  483. God is no

  484. longer against

  485. us,

  486. but God is

  487. for us

  488. and God

  489. will never

  490. ever turn

  491. his back

  492. upon us.

  493. So the

  494. gospel does

  495. speak about

  496. peace with

  497. God,

  498. but that's

  499. not what

  500. Paul is

  501. speaking about

  502. here,

  503. he's speaking

  504. about something

  505. that's had

  506. its roots in

  507. Old Testament

  508. teaching,

  509. indeed so

  510. deeply rooted

  511. in Jewish

  512. culture that

  513. right down to

  514. the present

  515. time in the

  516. Jewish community

  517. whenever two

  518. Jewish people

  519. greet one

  520. another it's

  521. with the word

  522. Shalom.

  523. which is the

  524. Hebrew word

  525. for peace.

  526. My last

  527. church in

  528. Philadelphia,

  529. we had a

  530. Jewish believer

  531. on staff,

  532. he was one

  533. of my co-pastors,

  534. delightful man,

  535. come to faith

  536. early in life,

  537. his family

  538. had abandoned

  539. him because of

  540. his Christian

  541. faith,

  542. but he went

  543. on to serve

  544. God in

  545. remarkable ways,

  546. and I remember

  547. him giving me

  548. just this

  549. wonderful

  550. definition

  551. of what

  552. Shalom

  553. meant and

  554. means in

  555. the Jewish

  556. mind,

  557. nothing out

  558. of place,

  559. everything

  560. as it

  561. should be.

  562. Nothing

  563. out of

  564. place,

  565. everything

  566. as it

  567. should be.

  568. Of course

  569. the whole

  570. issue that

  571. Paul was

  572. addressing

  573. in the

  574. church in

  575. Philippi was

  576. that everything

  577. seemed to be

  578. out of place,

  579. nothing seemed

  580. to be as it

  581. should be.

  582. That from a

  583. human perspective

  584. there was no

  585. way in which

  586. you could

  587. engineer this

  588. situation to

  589. be orderly

  590. and to be

  591. peaceful in

  592. that sense.

  593. And yet

  594. Paul says

  595. in this

  596. wonderful promise

  597. that he gives

  598. from God

  599. that there is

  600. this peace

  601. that is

  602. of the very

  603. essence of

  604. God himself

  605. because the

  606. triune God,

  607. Father,

  608. Son,

  609. and Holy

  610. Spirit,

  611. in their

  612. divine unity

  613. yet diversity

  614. is the

  615. God throughout

  616. eternity for

  617. whom it

  618. can be

  619. said.

  620. Nothing

  621. has ever

  622. been out of

  623. place in

  624. him or

  625. in his

  626. actions.

  627. Everything

  628. has always

  629. been as

  630. it should

  631. be because

  632. he is the

  633. God who

  634. is and

  635. who does

  636. all things

  637. well.

  638. What about

  639. this piece?

  640. What does it

  641. do as it

  642. begins to

  643. take hold?

  644. This other

  645. worldly piece

  646. that he

  647. describes.

  648. Well, he

  649. speaks about

  650. it guarding.

  651. Guarding our

  652. minds and

  653. guarding our

  654. hearts.

  655. Guarding our

  656. minds because

  657. when things

  658. go wrong for

  659. us, things

  660. get disturbed

  661. for us in

  662. life.

  663. Our minds

  664. work overtime.

  665. Our minds

  666. run ahead of

  667. themselves.

  668. ourselves.

  669. And Paul

  670. is simply

  671. reminding us

  672. that when we

  673. begin to

  674. grasp that

  675. we are not

  676. in control,

  677. it is God

  678. who is in

  679. control that

  680. we can rightly

  681. accept his

  682. wise and

  683. loving supervision

  684. of our

  685. circumstances,

  686. his direction

  687. of our lives,

  688. saying this is

  689. not my problem

  690. Lord, this is

  691. your problem.

  692. I don't need

  693. to think

  694. myself silly

  695. over this

  696. issue.

  697. But of

  698. course, we

  699. are not

  700. just minds

  701. in terms of

  702. how we

  703. approach life.

  704. We have

  705. hearts as

  706. well.

  707. That we are

  708. affected

  709. emotionally.

  710. We are

  711. affected deeply

  712. in our

  713. inner self

  714. in terms of

  715. our circumstances.

  716. That even

  717. though our

  718. minds may

  719. be alert

  720. and clear,

  721. very often

  722. we can be

  723. disturbed and

  724. deeply unsettled

  725. in ourselves

  726. because of

  727. the issues

  728. that we

  729. face.

  730. And Paul

  731. uses the

  732. language of

  733. military

  734. protection.

  735. The effect

  736. of the

  737. peace of

  738. God is

  739. to shield

  740. our minds

  741. from

  742. disturbing

  743. angles on

  744. life,

  745. disturbing

  746. perspectives on

  747. life.

  748. To think

  749. not as the

  750. world thinks

  751. with no

  752. reference to

  753. God, but

  754. to think

  755. always with

  756. God in

  757. the center

  758. frame of

  759. our

  760. understanding

  761. of what's

  762. happening to

  763. us and

  764. what's going

  765. on around

  766. us.

  767. At the

  768. same with

  769. our hearts.

  770. That we

  771. don't allow

  772. our emotions

  773. to take

  774. control.

  775. We don't

  776. allow our

  777. emotions to

  778. run riot

  779. and to

  780. lead us

  781. into deep

  782. disturbance.

  783. But rather

  784. we are content

  785. to know

  786. as God

  787. says to

  788. Moses and

  789. through Moses

  790. to the

  791. Israelites in

  792. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 29 chapter mention

  793. chapter 29

  794. that the

  795. everlasting

  796. arms of

  797. the everlasting

  798. God are

  799. round about

  800. and underneath

  801. us.

  802. When we

  803. don't know

  804. what's going

  805. on, we

  806. know that

  807. the bottom

  808. is not

  809. going to

  810. fall out

  811. of our

  812. world because

  813. the arms

  814. of God

  815. are supporting

  816. us through

  817. the worst

  818. of situations.

  819. Paul's

  820. promise is

  821. backed up

  822. by a word

  823. of personal

  824. testimony.

  825. It's

  826. strange that

  827. for those

  828. in the

  829. Christian

  830. ministry

  831. through the

  832. ages

  833. that those

  834. who serve

  835. as ministers

  836. are not

  837. merely called

  838. to perform

  839. certain

  840. duties

  841. and fulfill

  842. certain

  843. tasks

  844. the most

  845. central of

  846. which is

  847. to proclaim

  848. the word

  849. of God

  850. and to

  851. seek to

  852. pastor

  853. the people

  854. of God

  855. but actually

  856. they are

  857. called

  858. to walk

  859. the path

  860. of the

  861. issues

  862. about which

  863. they preach

  864. themselves.

  865. So it is

  866. not unusual

  867. for pastors

  868. who will

  869. inevitably

  870. find themselves

  871. preaching

  872. about suffering

  873. to actually

  874. be called

  875. by God

  876. to walk

  877. the path

  878. of suffering

  879. in some

  880. shape or

  881. form.

  882. That almost

  883. inexplicably

  884. and in ways

  885. that often

  886. baffle us

  887. as ministers.

  888. We find

  889. ourselves

  890. walking

  891. roads

  892. that we

  893. have preached

  894. about to

  895. others

  896. that we

  897. suddenly have

  898. to experience

  899. for ourselves

  900. and under

  901. those circumstances

  902. our

  903. confidence

  904. in the

  905. message

  906. that God

  907. has given

  908. is put

  909. to the

  910. test.

  911. It is

  912. very easy

  913. to stand

  914. in a

  915. pulpit

  916. and to

  917. preach

  918. in abstraction

  919. about these

  920. things

  921. things.

  922. It is

  923. a very

  924. different

  925. thing

  926. to preach

  927. those

  928. same

  929. things

  930. to

  931. yourself

  932. and to

  933. your

  934. family

  935. when you

  936. are in

  937. the thick

  938. of it

  939. and going

  940. through the

  941. furnace.

  942. Yet it is

  943. only as

  944. God takes

  945. his servants

  946. through the

  947. furnace

  948. that he

  949. proves that

  950. his word

  951. is not

  952. true

  953. theoretically

  954. it is

  955. true in

  956. reality.

  957. And so

  958. for Paul

  959. Paul goes

  960. on to speak

  961. very candidly

  962. about his

  963. own personal

  964. experience

  965. of life

  966. because he

  967. goes on

  968. to speak

  969. in verses

  970. 10 and

  971. 11 about

  972. the way

  973. in which

  974. the

  975. Philippians

  976. were showing

  977. him their

  978. generosity

  979. and supporting

  980. him in his

  981. need and

  982. he responds

  983. by thanking

  984. them for that

  985. by saying

  986. I am not

  987. saying this

  988. because I

  989. am in need

  990. for I have

  991. learned to be

  992. content whatever

  993. the circumstances

  994. I know what

  995. it is to be

  996. in need and I

  997. know what it is

  998. to have plenty

  999. I have learned

  1000. the secret

  1001. of being

  1002. content in

  1003. any and

  1004. every situation

  1005. whether well

  1006. fed or hungry

  1007. whether living

  1008. in plenty

  1009. or in want

  1010. he can put

  1011. hand on

  1012. heart before

  1013. his listening

  1014. congregation

  1015. and say

  1016. dear brothers

  1017. and sisters

  1018. I may not

  1019. be experiencing

  1020. exactly what

  1021. you are

  1022. experiencing

  1023. but I have

  1024. been there

  1025. myself

  1026. I have

  1027. been there

  1028. in the

  1029. challenges

  1030. that God

  1031. has brought

  1032. me through

  1033. in a way

  1034. that has

  1035. put my

  1036. faith to

  1037. the test

  1038. in the way

  1039. that your

  1040. faith has

  1041. been put

  1042. to the

  1043. test

  1044. in which

  1045. I am

  1046. being brought

  1047. out of

  1048. my depth

  1049. in the way

  1050. that you

  1051. have been

  1052. brought out

  1053. of your

  1054. depth

  1055. to realise

  1056. that we

  1057. stay afloat

  1058. not because

  1059. we can swim

  1060. through these

  1061. difficulties

  1062. but because

  1063. God keeps

  1064. us through

  1065. these difficulties

  1066. God makes

  1067. a promise

  1068. and he

  1069. will not

  1070. break it

  1071. the only way

  1072. that you

  1073. can test

  1074. that promise

  1075. is if you

  1076. find yourself

  1077. in circumstances

  1078. where it is

  1079. put to the

  1080. test

  1081. that doesn't

  1082. mean to say

  1083. it's easy to

  1084. go through

  1085. these troubles

  1086. it doesn't

  1087. mean to say

  1088. that Paul

  1089. went through

  1090. these trials

  1091. that he speaks

  1092. about

  1093. extreme need

  1094. as much as

  1095. extreme provision

  1096. doesn't mean to

  1097. say that he

  1098. went through

  1099. them all

  1100. with some

  1101. kind of

  1102. smiley face

  1103. artificially

  1104. stuck

  1105. on his

  1106. lapel

  1107. but rather

  1108. it was

  1109. because

  1110. he came

  1111. to the

  1112. other side

  1113. and he

  1114. knew that

  1115. poverty

  1116. had not

  1117. sunken

  1118. and wealth

  1119. had not

  1120. distracted

  1121. him

  1122. but he

  1123. could literally

  1124. go to

  1125. either ends

  1126. of the

  1127. spectrum

  1128. of the

  1129. experience

  1130. of life

  1131. and be

  1132. derailed

  1133. by

  1134. neither

  1135. it's

  1136. just as

  1137. easy to

  1138. be derailed

  1139. in our

  1140. faith

  1141. when things

  1142. are going

  1143. well

  1144. as when

  1145. things are

  1146. going

  1147. badly

  1148. and Paul

  1149. was able

  1150. to testify

  1151. bear witness

  1152. I've

  1153. been

  1154. through the

  1155. worst

  1156. and God

  1157. has kept

  1158. me

  1159. I've

  1160. been

  1161. through

  1162. the

  1163. best

  1164. and God

  1165. is still

  1166. kept

  1167. me

  1168. and it's

  1169. good to be

  1170. able to

  1171. know that

  1172. when you

  1173. face these

  1174. circumstances

  1175. that we

  1176. all face

  1177. that we

  1178. are not

  1179. alone

  1180. that's one

  1181. of the

  1182. first thoughts

  1183. that crop

  1184. into our

  1185. mind

  1186. nobody

  1187. understands

  1188. because nobody

  1189. has walked

  1190. this way

  1191. before

  1192. and again

  1193. go back

  1194. to that

  1195. little passage

  1196. that Paul

  1197. read

  1198. before our

  1199. pastoral

  1200. prayer

  1201. that we

  1202. have a

  1203. great high

  1204. priest

  1205. who is

  1206. not

  1207. unable

  1208. to

  1209. sympathize

  1210. with us

  1211. in our

  1212. weakness

  1213. but who

  1214. has been

  1215. touched

  1216. with the

  1217. feeling

  1218. of our

  1219. infirmities

  1220. has been

  1221. tested

  1222. in every

  1223. way

  1224. like as

  1225. we are

  1226. yet

  1227. remained

  1228. without sin

  1229. that the

  1230. ultimate

  1231. proof

  1232. the ultimate

  1233. testimony

  1234. that God

  1235. keeps this

  1236. glorious

  1237. promise

  1238. that he

  1239. makes

  1240. is the

  1241. way that

  1242. he kept

  1243. it to

  1244. his own

  1245. son

  1246. in human

  1247. flesh

  1248. during his

  1249. time on

  1250. this earth

  1251. that the

  1252. Lord Jesus

  1253. Christ

  1254. was never

  1255. utterly

  1256. abandoned

  1257. but even

  1258. in the cry

  1259. of dereliction

  1260. when he

  1261. cried out

  1262. my God

  1263. my God

  1264. I am

  1265. forsaken

  1266. why

  1267. that was

  1268. not

  1269. the Lord

  1270. Jesus

  1271. Christ

  1272. being

  1273. swallowed

  1274. up

  1275. in despair

  1276. because

  1277. that same

  1278. Lord

  1279. Jesus

  1280. Christ

  1281. who

  1282. uttered

  1283. those

  1284. very

  1285. words

  1286. knew

  1287. full

  1288. well

  1289. that

  1290. God

  1291. had

  1292. promised

  1293. I

  1294. will

  1295. not

  1296. leave

  1297. let my

  1298. Holy

  1299. One

  1300. see

  1301. decay

  1302. I

  1303. will

  1304. not

  1305. abandon

  1306. him

  1307. to the

  1308. grave

  1309. !

  1310. And that's

  1311. why

  1312. the Lord

  1313. Jesus

  1314. Christ

  1315. was able

  1316. to speak

  1317. his last

  1318. words

  1319. on the

  1320. cross

  1321. as words

  1322. of absolute

  1323. confidence

  1324. Father

  1325. into your

  1326. hands

  1327. I commit

  1328. my spirit

  1329. because he

  1330. was kept

  1331. by the

  1332. promise of

  1333. God

  1334. he was

  1335. upheld

  1336. and he

  1337. in his

  1338. own

  1339. experience

  1340. through the

  1341. gates of

  1342. death

  1343. into the

  1344. tomb

  1345. where he

  1346. was laid

  1347. not merely

  1348. for the

  1349. resurrection

  1350. he experienced

  1351. but to the

  1352. enthronement

  1353. that is now

  1354. his as he

  1355. sits at the

  1356. right hand

  1357. of majesty

  1358. on high

  1359. he is

  1360. literally

  1361. living proof

  1362. that God

  1363. keeps his

  1364. promise

  1365. not just to

  1366. his own

  1367. incarnate

  1368. son

  1369. but to

  1370. all his

  1371. sons and

  1372. daughters

  1373. in the

  1374. Lord Jesus

  1375. Christ

  1376. who have

  1377. been adopted

  1378. into his

  1379. family

  1380. which brings

  1381. us to the

  1382. last thing

  1383. what is that

  1384. one important

  1385. key

  1386. that all

  1387. important

  1388. key

  1389. that Paul

  1390. astutely

  1391. inserts to

  1392. everything

  1393. that he

  1394. says

  1395. this is

  1396. not an

  1397. apostolic

  1398. pep talk

  1399. saying you

  1400. really need

  1401. to get your

  1402. act together

  1403. you need to

  1404. get your

  1405. thinking

  1406. straight

  1407. no he

  1408. is saying

  1409. that ultimately

  1410. it's not

  1411. merely about

  1412. how we

  1413. perceive

  1414. things

  1415. or how we

  1416. approach

  1417. things in

  1418. life

  1419. but we

  1420. are told

  1421. that this

  1422. peace of

  1423. God

  1424. which

  1425. passes

  1426. understanding

  1427. that will

  1428. keep our

  1429. hearts

  1430. and minds

  1431. is in

  1432. Christ

  1433. Jesus

  1434. and again

  1435. to drive the

  1436. point home

  1437. he says

  1438. in verse

  1439. 19

  1440. and my

  1441. God

  1442. will meet

  1443. all your

  1444. needs

  1445. according to

  1446. his glorious

  1447. riches

  1448. in Christ

  1449. Jesus

  1450. it's the

  1451. one thing

  1452. about Paul's

  1453. teaching

  1454. that is so

  1455. glaringly

  1456. obvious

  1457. that is so

  1458. amazingly

  1459. missed

  1460. by so many

  1461. Christians

  1462. in their

  1463. understanding

  1464. of what it

  1465. means to be

  1466. a Christian

  1467. that the

  1468. whole of

  1469. Paul's

  1470. writings

  1471. about the

  1472. Christian

  1473. faith

  1474. whether it

  1475. be in his

  1476. preaching

  1477. as we have

  1478. it in the

  1479. book of

  1480. Acts

  1481. or whether

  1482. it be

  1483. in his

  1484. letters

  1485. as we have

  1486. them to

  1487. the different

  1488. churches of

  1489. the New

  1490. Testament

  1491. the number

  1492. of times

  1493. he either

  1494. directly or

  1495. indirectly

  1496. says that

  1497. being a

  1498. Christian

  1499. is all

  1500. about being

  1501. joined to

  1502. Jesus

  1503. being united

  1504. to Christ

  1505. because we

  1506. are in

  1507. him

  1508. because there

  1509. is a

  1510. living

  1511. and loving

  1512. as well as

  1513. legally binding

  1514. bond

  1515. that joins

  1516. us to him

  1517. in spiritual

  1518. marriage

  1519. what we

  1520. are in

  1521. him

  1522. will for

  1523. eternity

  1524. make us

  1525. different to

  1526. what we

  1527. were in

  1528. ourselves

  1529. those of you

  1530. who are

  1531. married will

  1532. know what I

  1533. mean when I

  1534. say that

  1535. marriage

  1536. changes you

  1537. marriage

  1538. changes you

  1539. the Paul

  1540. Levy that I

  1541. knew on that

  1542. flight to

  1543. Africa

  1544. when he was

  1545. 19 was

  1546. very different

  1547. from the

  1548. Paul Levy

  1549. that was my

  1550. neighbour when

  1551. he was married

  1552. to Claire

  1553. marriage

  1554. changes people

  1555. but that's

  1556. true at a

  1557. human level

  1558. that because

  1559. the two

  1560. become one

  1561. and two

  1562. lives in

  1563. a most

  1564. profound

  1565. and extraordinary

  1566. way

  1567. change

  1568. the two

  1569. people who

  1570. are involved

  1571. in that

  1572. life

  1573. so in a

  1574. more glorious

  1575. way when

  1576. there is a

  1577. spiritual

  1578. marriage between

  1579. the Lord Jesus

  1580. Christ and his

  1581. people in the

  1582. covenant bond

  1583. that is established

  1584. by God

  1585. with each of

  1586. us as

  1587. Christians

  1588. individually

  1589. with all of

  1590. us together

  1591. corporately

  1592. as his church

  1593. unitedly

  1594. it's not that

  1595. we change

  1596. God because

  1597. God cannot

  1598. be changed

  1599. but that

  1600. living and

  1601. loving bond

  1602. that he

  1603. establishes with

  1604. us in

  1605. Christ Jesus

  1606. forever

  1607. changes us

  1608. that we can

  1609. never be what

  1610. we used to

  1611. be

  1612. that what we

  1613. are in

  1614. union and

  1615. communion with

  1616. Christ will

  1617. transform

  1618. what we are

  1619. not merely in

  1620. relationship to

  1621. one another and

  1622. to the world

  1623. around us but

  1624. how we face

  1625. the issues

  1626. of life that

  1627. would otherwise

  1628. unsettle us

  1629. and so easily

  1630. sink us

  1631. were that not

  1632. the case

  1633. and the fact

  1634. that the Lord

  1635. Jesus Christ

  1636. reminded his

  1637. disciples before

  1638. he ascended

  1639. into heaven

  1640. I will never

  1641. leave you

  1642. and I will

  1643. never forsake

  1644. you

  1645. but through

  1646. the darkest

  1647. days as well

  1648. as through

  1649. the brightest

  1650. through the

  1651. darkest nights

  1652. as well as

  1653. through the

  1654. brightest days

  1655. I will be

  1656. there

  1657. and I

  1658. will be

  1659. keeping

  1660. you

  1661. how much

  1662. we need

  1663. that word

  1664. today for

  1665. all of us

  1666. because my

  1667. guess is

  1668. there is no

  1669. one in this

  1670. building from

  1671. the youngest

  1672. right through

  1673. to the oldest

  1674. who in their

  1675. own unique

  1676. and personal

  1677. way is

  1678. wrestling

  1679. is not

  1680. wrestling with

  1681. the issues

  1682. that Paul is

  1683. talking about

  1684. here

  1685. and even

  1686. though our

  1687. issues may

  1688. differ

  1689. the answer

  1690. is the same

  1691. for everyone

  1692. in this

  1693. building

  1694. and even

  1695. if you're

  1696. here as

  1697. someone who

  1698. isn't yet

  1699. a Christian

  1700. and you're

  1701. struggling with

  1702. these issues

  1703. and you don't

  1704. quite know

  1705. where to

  1706. turn

  1707. the answer

  1708. is still

  1709. the same

  1710. I can do

  1711. all things

  1712. as well

  1713. through Jesus

  1714. Christ

  1715. who gives me

  1716. strength

  1717. let's pray

  1718. let's pray

  1719. let's pray

  1720. let's pray

  1721. let's pray

  1722. let's pray

  1723. let's pray

  1724. let's pray

  1725. let's pray

  1726. let's pray

  1727. let's pray

  1728. let's pray

  1729. let's pray
