  1. Now if you have a Bible there, do you turn to James chapter 1.

    James 1 chapter mention

  2. The last couple of weeks I've had an experience that I'm sure many of us have had many times.

  3. The phone rings, at a time you don't really want to answer the phone, you pick it up,

  4. and you find a distant voice from the other side of the planet,

  5. saying they want to speak to Mr Cashman.

  6. I'm trying to deny my existence, but the ventures have come with curiosity,

  7. and the voice announces they're calling from TalkTalk, my internet and phone supplier,

  8. saying they notice that my internet service has slowed down.

  9. And of course it's very plausible, isn't it?

  10. Because my internet service is never fast as I think it should be,

  11. as I think I pay them that money to make it.

  12. And so on, it starts to get interested, they've latched into a genuine desire to make things work quickly.

  13. But then part of me remembers the truth.

  14. A, I don't really want to be speaking to this person, I've got other things I want to do,

  15. and B, there are fraudsters out there.

  16. The fact bolstered by the fact that TalkTalk have had all their data left in the last couple of weeks.

  17. So I start to ask a few questions, and pretty soon the other person hangs up,

  18. annoyed that I'm asking them questions.

  19. The whole experience is a reminder, isn't it, of how easy it is to be deceived.

  20. Someone calls promising something you want,

  21. and you need to discern the truth, don't you?

  22. What is real, what is not.

  23. Well, James is writing because he doesn't want his readers deceived.

  24. Look at verse 16, the middle of the section we're looking at.

  25. So we're looking at verses 12 to 18, right in the middle there.

  26. Verse 16, do not be deceived, my beloved brothers.

  27. Now it's easy to be deceived about with prank calls or hoax calls,

  28. but that's actually not terribly dangerous.

  29. What was the worst thing to happen?

  30. I might lose a bit of money, I might get my computer hacked.

  31. But these people, and we indeed as Christians, are in danger of much bigger deception.

  32. Turn over to the end of the letter.

  33. See, this is the whole reason James is writing.

  34. Look at chapter 5, verses 19 to 20.

  35. My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth,

  36. literally in the original language, is deceived.

  37. It's the same word used back in chapter 1, verse 16.

  38. If anyone is deceived and someone brings him back,

  39. let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering,

  40. from his deception,

  41. will save his soul from death,

  42. and will cover a multitude of signals.

  43. See what's at stake in this deception?

  44. What's at stake is more than a matter of life and death.

  45. It's a matter of heaven and hell, James says.

  46. And rather, he's writing to people who profess to be believers in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  47. He calls them brothers.

  48. Though the stakes are high, he does not want them to be deceived.

  49. Now, what could deceive them?

  50. Well, as you have heard from the whole section that Penny read to us,

  51. many people were undergoing trials, having hard times.

  52. And it's easy in hard times to be deceived, isn't it?

  53. To be deceived that maybe God doesn't really love me.

  54. To be deceived that maybe the gospel isn't really true.

  55. To be deceived that maybe to give in to this temptation

  56. would be an easier way out, an easier way to comfort.

  57. Because that's why in verse 12, James reminds his readers of a greater truth.

  58. There is a reason for enduring.

  59. Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial.

  60. For when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life

  61. that God has promised to those who love him.

  62. See, what's the hope at the end?

  63. What's the reward for those who endure who don't give in?

  64. It's this crown of life.

  65. I think we hear the word crown and we think of the crown jewels, don't we?

  66. Think of a big golden crown that a monarch would wear.

  67. For James' reader, the usual crown they would think of

  68. was more likely a laurel crown, a crown, a wreath

  69. that would be placed on the victor's head after an athletic competition.

  70. But here James said this crown isn't made of laurel wreaths.

  71. It's made of something better.

  72. It's made of life.

  73. It's the crown of life.

  74. It's the crown of real life.

  75. The crown of eternal life.

  76. Life in heaven with God when we die.

  77. Life in a new creation.

  78. When Christ comes back.

  79. Real life.

  80. But these trials and difficulties of life bring us temptations.

  81. They can make us think there isn't a crown of life to inherit.

  82. They can make us think that there are more to life now.

  83. It's when the trial of unemployment comes

  84. that the temptation to fill the tax returns can come, isn't it?

  85. You might never think about that normally.

  86. But suddenly the trial of financial hardship arises.

  87. The temptation to just get something a little cheap,

  88. get something a little quick.

  89. That suddenly arises, isn't it?

  90. James knew.

  91. His readers were thinking like that.

  92. They were thinking,

  93. or maybe they were thinking that God was to blame for their trials.

  94. Look at verse 13.

  95. Let no one say when he is tempted,

  96. I am being tempted by God.

  97. For God cannot be tempted by evil,

  98. and he himself tempts no one.

  99. Perhaps they were considering blaming God for their temptations

  100. because they knew that God is sovereign.

  101. They knew the truth of Psalm 135 verse 6,

    Psalms 135:6

  102. that the Lord does whatever he pleases.

  103. Maybe they thought,

  104. well, God is making us suffer,

  105. so this is his way of tempting us.

  106. Or maybe they were remembering the Old Testament.

  107. Remember how the Lord tested Abraham,

  108. or tested Hezekiah,

  109. 2 Chronicles chapter 32 verse 31.

    2 Chronicles 32:31

  110. They thought the Lord is testing,

  111. tempting us.

  112. It's the same word in the original language.

  113. So how could they stand firm

  114. under these temptations and trials?

  115. Well, James wants them to know the truth.

  116. Whatever they're thinking,

  117. they're in danger of being deceived.

  118. And he wants them to receive the crown of life.

  119. So how can they stand firm?

  120. Well, he wants them to make sure they're not deceived,

  121. but they know the truth.

  122. Two aspects of the truth in particular.

  123. He wants them to know the truth about themselves,

  124. and the truth about God.

  125. Let's look at the truth about themselves,

  126. the truth about ourselves, first of all.

  127. So we can stand firm in our trials and temptations.

  128. Verses 13 and 14.

  129. And the truth about ourselves is not a popular truth, is it?

  130. If you were to ask your neighbours,

  131. or boys and girls,

  132. if you were to ask someone at school,

  133. are you a good person?

  134. How would they normally reply?

  135. I suspect they say,

  136. I'm not perfect,

  137. but I'm basically a good person.

  138. I do my best.

  139. I try to be nice to people.

  140. I'm a good person.

  141. And when they do make mistakes,

  142. they look for excuses, don't they?

  143. We live in a culture where everyone wants someone to blame,

  144. don't they?

  145. But James' point here is,

  146. we don't really have something to blame.

  147. Look at what he says in verse 13.

  148. When we give in to temptation,

  149. it's never God's fault,

  150. it's always our fault.

  151. We are not the good people we think we are.

  152. We're slaves to our desires.

  153. Look at verse 13.

  154. Let no one say when he's tempted,

  155. I'm being tempted by God,

  156. for God cannot be tempted with evil,

  157. and he himself tempts no one.

  158. But each person is tempted

  159. when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.

  160. Then desire,

  161. when it is conceived,

  162. gives birth to sin,

  163. and sin,

  164. when it is fully grown,

  165. brings forth to death.

  166. See,

  167. James' readers

  168. were blaming God for their temptation.

  169. That was a symptom

  170. of an underlying problem with them.

  171. Back in verse 8 of chapter 1,

  172. James had said that,

  173. had warned them not to be a double-minded person,

  174. who's unstable in all their ways.

  175. Over in chapter 4,

  176. verse 4,

  177. verse 8 as well,

  178. he talks about people being double-minded.

  179. In chapter 1,

  180. verse 18,

  181. double-minded is about

  182. not really believing God.

  183. It's about praying,

  184. but not believing he will answer.

  185. In chapter 4,

  186. verse 8,

  187. it's about

  188. claiming to want to follow God,

  189. but really desiring wealth

  190. and prestige

  191. on your own way

  192. in this world.

  193. See,

  194. here's what we,

  195. what double-mindedness is.

  196. It's kind of saying one thing,

  197. pretending,

  198. claiming to believe one thing,

  199. but actually living in another way.

  200. And that's what we see going on here

  201. in chapter 1,

  202. verse 13.

  203. This is probably a double-mindedness.

  204. It's kind of,

  205. it's God who's tempting me,

  206. not grasping the truth

  207. about God

  208. in their own minds.

  209. So James is showing them

  210. the problem is not with God,

  211. the problem is with them.

  212. And we can be double-minded too,

  213. can't we?

  214. Maybe we don't go as far

  215. as explicitly blaming God

  216. for tempting us.

  217. But how often do I find myself

  218. saying something like,

  219. I'm sorry I got cross with you,

  220. but I'm very tired.

  221. Or do you say,

  222. I'm sorry I did this,

  223. I'm sorry I reacted in this way,

  224. but I'm under a lot of pressure

  225. at work at the moment.

  226. I'm sorry I did that,

  227. but you provoked me.

  228. I'm sorry,

  229. but I wouldn't have done it

  230. if such and such.

  231. I'd fairly, quite easily,

  232. blame our sin,

  233. blame our failings,

  234. blame doing something wrong,

  235. not on ourselves,

  236. but on something

  237. in our circumstances.

  238. Essentially,

  239. that's like blaming God,

  240. isn't it?

  241. So it's not about me,

  242. it's about something out there.

  243. I'm really God's in charge

  244. of all that.

  245. If it hadn't been like this,

  246. I wouldn't have behaved

  247. in this way.

  248. It's actually a bit of

  249. double-mindedness,

  250. isn't it?

  251. And that's why James says

  252. we need to know the truth

  253. about ourselves.

  254. The truth is not popular,

  255. it's not comfortable,

  256. but it's what we need to know.

  257. That when we are tempted,

  258. it is because,

  259. verse 14,

  260. we are enticed

  261. by our own desires.

  262. We're tempted

  263. by our own desires

  264. lure us or entice us

  265. and drag us away.

  266. We're tempted,

  267. we fall into temptation

  268. when we let our feelings

  269. run the show,

  270. rather than our truth,

  271. the truth,

  272. God's truth,

  273. dominate,

  274. so that we think straight.

  275. The language James uses here

  276. is like the language

  277. of catching a fish.

  278. You know what it's like,

  279. I don't have a go fishing,

  280. I've never had any appeal to me,

  281. but you know how it works,

  282. don't you?

  283. You get a bit of bait,

  284. a fly,

  285. or a worm,

  286. or something,

  287. put it on a hook,

  288. cast your rod,

  289. cast your line

  290. into the river or the sea,

  291. and the fish comes along,

  292. and the fish is a fish.

  293. So it sees the worm

  294. or the fly there

  295. and thinks,

  296. oh,

  297. that looks nice,

  298. I want it.

  299. And in its desires,

  300. it bites on to the bait

  301. and is hooked.

  302. That's the language

  303. James uses here.

  304. We're enticed,

  305. we see the bait,

  306. we see the bait,

  307. and we act on those desires

  308. rather than submitting

  309. to God's truth.

  310. So for example,

  311. boys and girls at school,

  312. you know how this works out,

  313. don't you?

  314. Well,

  315. how does it work out for you?

  316. Think about it for a moment.

  317. You desire to fit in

  318. with your friends,

  319. you desire to be popular.

  320. And so,

  321. someone suggests that you

  322. stop talking to that girl

  323. over there

  324. because she's a bit nasty,

  325. or whatever it is.

  326. And so rather than letting

  327. God's truth dictate,

  328. it says you should love

  329. your enemies

  330. and pray for those

  331. who persecute you,

  332. you say,

  333. you know what,

  334. I'm going to go along with that.

  335. So you give in

  336. your desire,

  337. and so you're being mean

  338. and bullying along

  339. with everyone else.

  340. And we all know how

  341. that works in our own lives,

  342. don't we?

  343. We all face choices daily,

  344. whether we act on our own desires

  345. or in line with God's truth.

  346. So we desire

  347. financial security.

  348. So we hold on

  349. to all the money we have

  350. rather than giving

  351. to gospel work.

  352. Or we desire

  353. for control.

  354. And so we get angry,

  355. or we manipulate

  356. and dominate.

  357. We desire for an easy life.

  358. So we don't correct

  359. a brother or sister

  360. who's falling into sin.

  361. So this is how

  362. sin starts.

  363. It begins with our desires.

  364. It begins with how

  365. we act on our feelings.

  366. That's stage one.

  367. Then look at stage two,

  368. verse 15.

  369. Then desire,

  370. when it is conceived,

  371. gives birth to sin.

  372. In other words,

  373. when we let our desires

  374. control our will,

  375. rather than God's truth

  376. controlling our will,

  377. then we give in

  378. to that action,

  379. it gives birth to sin.

  380. We're guided by our feelings

  381. rather than remembering

  382. the truth.

  383. Now,

  384. a sin doesn't seem

  385. that important to us,

  386. does it?

  387. Sin these days

  388. is used as a kind of,

  389. it's a marketing tool,

  390. isn't it?

  391. Magnum ice creams

  392. had the seven deadly sins

  393. flavours a few years ago.

  394. Sin is often viewed as

  395. eating too much sugar

  396. or too much fat

  397. or whatever is bad

  398. at the moment.

  399. James says,

  400. don't be deceived

  401. about that.

  402. Sin is serious.

  403. So stage one

  404. is desire,

  405. stage two

  406. is acting on that desire

  407. which leads to sin.

  408. Look where that leads to,

  409. verse 15,

  410. the third stage.

  411. Sin,

  412. when it is fully grown,

  413. brings forth death.

  414. See,

  415. sin is serious,

  416. says James.

  417. It's significant.

  418. If this is the pattern

  419. of our life,

  420. that we constantly

  421. follow our desires

  422. and fall into sin,

  423. and sin and sin

  424. without ever letting

  425. God's truth correct it.

  426. And what's the result

  427. when it's fully grown?

  428. Death.

  429. And what James says here

  430. is mirrored by

  431. the very first sin

  432. in human history.

  433. It's mirrored by

  434. what happened

  435. in the Garden of Eden

  436. when Adam and Eve

  437. fell.

  438. It began

  439. with forgetting

  440. God's truth

  441. or God's truth

  442. being distorted

  443. and then just acting

  444. on their desires,

  445. didn't it?

  446. Remember,

  447. God had told them,

  448. do not eat

  449. the fruit

  450. from the tree

  451. of the knowledge

  452. of good and evil.

  453. For in the day

  454. you eat of it

  455. you will surely die.

  456. And Satan,

  457. disguised as a snake,

  458. creeps into the garden

  459. and starts to

  460. get them to doubt

  461. God's truth,

  462. to distort God's word.

  463. He says,

  464. you're not sure

  465. they die.

  466. And then he distorts

  467. God's character.

  468. He says,

  469. hey,

  470. God doesn't want

  471. what's best for you,

  472. does he?

  473. God's trying to limit you.

  474. He knows if you eat

  475. that fruit

  476. you'll be like him.

  477. That's what,

  478. God doesn't have

  479. your best interest

  480. in heart.

  481. And Eve looks

  482. at the fruit.

  483. Genesis 3 verse 6

    Genesis 3:6

  484. says,

  485. when a woman saw

  486. the tree was good

  487. for food

  488. and that it was

  489. a delight to the eyes

  490. and that the tree

  491. was to be desired

  492. to make one wise,

  493. she took its fruit

  494. and ate

  495. and gave some

  496. to her husband.

  497. Do you see?

  498. God's truth

  499. ignored,

  500. the truth of God's

  501. character denied,

  502. desires acted upon.

  503. That's how sin begins.

  504. Begins with desire,

  505. leads to sin,

  506. ends in death.

  507. And remember,

  508. just as James'

  509. readers are evidently

  510. blaming God,

  511. it's essentially

  512. what Adam and Eve did.

  513. It's a pattern

  514. for humanity.

  515. We always want

  516. to make excuses,

  517. don't we?

  518. So when God

  519. walked in the garden

  520. in the cool of the evening

  521. and said to Adam,

  522. Adam,

  523. what have you done?

  524. What did Adam do?

  525. He said,

  526. it wasn't me,

  527. it was this woman

  528. you gave me.

  529. Basically,

  530. God,

  531. it's your fault,

  532. you made her.

  533. What does Eve do?

  534. That wasn't my fault,

  535. it was this serpent

  536. that you made in the garden.

  537. It was your fault,

  538. really God?

  539. As the old gag has it,

  540. Adam blamed the woman,

  541. the woman blamed the snake

  542. and the snake

  543. didn't have a leg to stand on.

  544. It's an old joke

  545. and it's actually not true

  546. because none of them

  547. have a leg to stand on.

  548. It was a sinful desire

  549. all the way,

  550. wasn't it?

  551. Ignoring God's truth,

  552. acting on our own desires,

  553. it leads to death.

  554. See,

  555. James says there's no excuse

  556. when you're tempted.

  557. We need to know

  558. the truth about ourselves

  559. if we're to remain

  560. steadfast under trial.

  561. We need to keep

  562. that truth about ourselves

  563. in mind.

  564. Our desires,

  565. our feelings

  566. are not reliable.

  567. It's not that they're

  568. unimportant,

  569. it's that they're unreliable.

  570. And left unrestrained,

  571. they lead to sin

  572. and death.

  573. So we need to realise

  574. how weak we are.

  575. That's the first truth

  576. James wants us

  577. to get our head around.

  578. We are weak.

  579. That's why the Lord Jesus

  580. teaches us to pray,

  581. lead us not into temptation.

  582. Not that God tempts us,

  583. but that our desires

  584. and the world around us,

  585. our own natures,

  586. can so easily entice us

  587. and trap us.

  588. So we need God's help

  589. to remember his truth

  590. and act in accordance to it

  591. and not cave in

  592. to our own desires.

  593. So that's the first thing

  594. James wants us to be clear about,

  595. the truth about ourselves.

  596. Our desires will lead us

  597. to trouble.

  598. But secondly,

  599. if we're to stand firm

  600. under trials

  601. and we can resist temptation,

  602. we need to know

  603. the truth about God.

  604. We need to avoid

  605. the deception

  606. that Adam and Eve fell into.

  607. And there are five facts,

  608. I'll go through them quickly,

  609. don't worry,

  610. there are five facts

  611. that James wants them to know,

  612. wants us to know

  613. about God's truth.

  614. The first we've already seen

  615. in verse 13,

  616. he does not tempt anyone

  617. because he is pure.

  618. God is pure

  619. so he doesn't tempt anyone

  620. and is not tempted.

  621. Evil and sin in the world

  622. is not God's fault.

  623. He tempts no one.

  624. But secondly,

  625. positively,

  626. he is the source

  627. of all that is good.

  628. Look at verse 17.

  629. Every good gift

  630. and every perfect gift

  631. is from above,

  632. coming down

  633. from the Father of lights.

  634. That means

  635. every good gift.

  636. What good gifts

  637. do you have in your life?

  638. Family,

  639. friends,

  640. the beauty of the autumn colours

  641. yesterday,

  642. stable government

  643. to allow us to meet like this,

  644. the enjoyment of sport

  645. and art,

  646. of science,

  647. of technology.

  648. These are all good gifts.

  649. They all come from

  650. one good giver.

  651. Every good gift

  652. comes from him.

  653. And even,

  654. in the context

  655. that James is writing in,

  656. even trials

  657. and hard times,

  658. even they come

  659. from God

  660. to make us

  661. perfect and complete,

  662. lacking in nothing,

  663. as James says

  664. back in verse 4.

  665. Every good gift

  666. comes from him.

  667. So he's pure,

  668. it doesn't tempt everyone,

  669. he is the source

  670. of every good thing,

  671. and thirdly,

  672. he's the creator

  673. of everything.

  674. Verse 17

  675. is the father

  676. of the light,

  677. of the heavenly lights.

  678. The father of lights.

  679. In other words,

  680. he's the God

  681. who created

  682. the stars

  683. and the sun

  684. and the moon.

  685. He created this

  686. whole universe.

  687. He is that powerful.

  688. And maybe James

  689. particularly

  690. calls him

  691. the father of lights,

  692. because perhaps

  693. some people

  694. were kind of

  695. resorting to

  696. blaming the stars

  697. for their behaviour.

  698. Oh, it wasn't my fault,

  699. but I'm a Leo

  700. or a Capricorn

  701. or whatever they all are.

  702. That's why I behave

  703. like this.

  704. And that's a

  705. contemporary problem,

  706. isn't it?

  707. I'm sure you have friends,

  708. I have friends,

  709. who check their horoscopes

  710. and seem to know

  711. what their star sign is,

  712. as if that excuses

  713. anything they do

  714. or constrains

  715. anything they do.

  716. James says,

  717. no,

  718. the stars

  719. come and go,

  720. the moon waxes

  721. and wanes.

  722. Those things shift

  723. and change

  724. in their orbits

  725. around the world.

  726. Our father does not.

  727. Which is the fourth thing.

  728. He does not change.

  729. The father of lights

  730. with whom there is

  731. no variation

  732. or shadow

  733. due to change.

  734. These people

  735. were double-minded.

  736. We're often

  737. double-minded,

  738. aren't we?

  739. We can say one thing

  740. on Sunday

  741. and just live differently

  742. at various points

  743. of the week.

  744. James says,

  745. God is not like that.

  746. He is unchanging.

  747. He doesn't shift

  748. and change

  749. like the shadows.

  750. He is single-minded

  751. and single

  752. in his purpose.

  753. In fact,

  754. earlier on,

  755. back in chapter 1

  756. verse 5,

  757. James had said

  758. that if anyone

  759. if he lacks wisdom,

  760. let him ask God

  761. he gives generously

  762. without reproach.

  763. Now,

  764. wisdom is another

  765. of God's good gifts.

  766. But that word

  767. generously there,

  768. the original language,

  769. has the idea

  770. of simply,

  771. single-mindedly.

  772. This is the way

  773. God is.

  774. He doesn't change.

  775. There's no variation.

  776. No alterations

  777. with him.

  778. He is unchangeable.

  779. Utterly reliable.

  780. So here are the

  781. first four things

  782. that he is pure.

  783. He does not tempt anyone.

  784. He is the source of good,

  785. of every good thing.

  786. He is the creator

  787. who is in control

  788. and he does not change.

  789. And if God's character

  790. never changes,

  791. then his purposes

  792. and intentions

  793. for people

  794. never change either.

  795. And that takes us

  796. on to the fourth truth

  797. about God

  798. that James wants us to know.

  799. Look at the end

  800. of verse 18.

  801. Look at verse 18.

  802. Of his own will

  803. he brought us forth

  804. by the word of truth

  805. that we should be

  806. a kind of firstfruits

  807. of his creatures.

  808. Here's the fifth thing.

  809. God is gracious

  810. and makes us

  811. into new people.

  812. He is gracious

  813. and makes us

  814. into new people.

  815. There's a lot in this

  816. verse 18.

  817. We'll speed through it

  818. very quickly.

  819. What does James say

  820. God has done?

  821. He has brought us forth.

  822. Do you notice

  823. that's the same language

  824. he used back in verse 15.

  825. There he says

  826. sin, when it is fully grown

  827. it brings forth death.

  828. Our desires ultimately

  829. bring forth death.

  830. What does God's will,

  831. God's desire do?

  832. Ultimately it brings forth life.

  833. Makes us new people.

  834. That's what he's done.

  835. He's brought us forth.

  836. It's new birth

  837. to use the language

  838. Jesus has given

  839. in John 3.

  840. We are born again

  841. James says.

  842. That's why God

  843. makes believers

  844. into new people.

  845. That's what he's done.

  846. Why has he done it?

  847. What's the purpose?

  848. Look at the end of the verse.

  849. That we should be

  850. a kind of firstfruits

  851. of his creatures.

  852. In the Old Testament

  853. the firstfruits

  854. were the part of the harvest

  855. that were given to God

  856. that were devoted to God

  857. but they also

  858. were kind of representative

  859. of what was going to come.

  860. The guarantee,

  861. the down payment

  862. of what was to come.

  863. So James is saying

  864. God has made us

  865. the firstfruits.

  866. He's given us new life.

  867. He's made us Christians

  868. in Christ.

  869. New people.

  870. And that means

  871. we belong to him

  872. firstly

  873. but secondly

  874. we're the beginning

  875. we're the guarantee

  876. the deposit

  877. of what is going to come next.

  878. But ultimately

  879. God is going to make

  880. the whole creation new.

  881. That starts with us.

  882. That starts with us

  883. in Christ

  884. that one day

  885. everything will be made new.

  886. Now how has he done that?

  887. Verse 18.

  888. He brought us forth

  889. by the word of truth.

  890. The word of truth.

  891. The gospel.

  892. That's what Paul calls it

  893. in Colossians 1.

  894. The gospel.

  895. The word of truth.

  896. This good news message

  897. about what Jesus has done.

  898. And do you know

  899. just look down to verse 21

  900. for a second.

  901. It's not just a message

  902. that's out there somewhere.

  903. It's not a truth

  904. we've had access out there.

  905. Rather

  906. verse 21

  907. it is

  908. the implanted word

  909. James goes on to say.

  910. It is this truth

  911. God has planted

  912. deep in us

  913. to use the language

  914. of the hymn we just sang.

  915. As this gospel

  916. is planted into us

  917. as you plant a seed

  918. into the ground

  919. you hope it will grow

  920. and bear fruit

  921. and change.

  922. So it is

  923. as God has planted

  924. his word

  925. of truth in us

  926. so it bears fruit

  927. and changes us

  928. from the inside out.

  929. This word of truth

  930. is the announcement

  931. of what God

  932. has done in Christ.

  933. James calls it

  934. the word of truth

  935. specifically

  936. because it's to answer

  937. the deception

  938. that they are otherwise

  939. likely to believe.

  940. That deception

  941. is really the great lie

  942. that Satan whispered

  943. right back in the

  944. garden of Eden.

  945. The lie that God

  946. is not good.

  947. The lie that God

  948. doesn't really love us.

  949. The lie that God

  950. doesn't really want

  951. the best thing for us.

  952. And that's the lie

  953. that always trumps us up

  954. doesn't it?

  955. Whereas what does

  956. the word of truth

  957. tell us?

  958. Oh yes it tells us

  959. God is incredibly holy.

  960. But it tells us

  961. God is incredibly

  962. compassionate.

  963. That having seen

  964. Adam and Eve

  965. reject him

  966. and walk away

  967. God didn't then

  968. walk away from the creation.

  969. Didn't walk away

  970. from us as human beings.

  971. Rather he set

  972. a new start.

  973. He sent his own son

  974. the Lord Jesus Christ

  975. to be a new beginning

  976. a new humanity.

  977. When Jesus came

  978. he didn't give in

  979. to his own desires.

  980. He didn't make bread

  981. when Satan said

  982. you're hungry

  983. make some bread

  984. for yourself.

  985. You're powerful enough

  986. to do that.

  987. Jesus didn't do that.

  988. Rather he lived

  989. by his Father's word.

  990. He brought his Father's

  991. truth to mind.

  992. In the garden of Gethsemane

  993. before the night

  994. he was betrayed

  995. how did he pray?

  996. Father take this cup

  997. from me

  998. but not my will

  999. but your will

  1000. be done.

  1001. He resisted

  1002. his natural

  1003. human desire

  1004. to preserve his life.

  1005. He said

  1006. remember his

  1007. Father's truth

  1008. followed his

  1009. Father's way.

  1010. He died

  1011. the death

  1012. we deserve to die.

  1013. He was raised

  1014. to life again.

  1015. As a beginning

  1016. of the new creation.

  1017. So that in him

  1018. we too

  1019. can be new people.

  1020. We too

  1021. through faith

  1022. in Christ

  1023. are raised

  1024. to new life.

  1025. See when God

  1026. when Jesus

  1027. walked out that tomb

  1028. that first Easter Sunday

  1029. it wasn't just

  1030. guaranteeing

  1031. heaven one day

  1032. or the new creation

  1033. one day

  1034. as gloriously true

  1035. as those things are.

  1036. God is guaranteeing

1037. new life for us now.

  1038. Guaranteeing

  1039. that we can

  1040. be born again.

  1041. We can be

  1042. brought forth

  1043. to new life

1044. by the word of truth.

  1045. See naturally

  1046. as we're born

  1047. as human beings

  1048. it is impossible

  1049. for us

  1050. not to sin.

  1051. Naturally

  1052. we just cave in

  1053. to our desires

  1054. the way we are.

  1055. But when we are

  1056. born again

  1057. we no longer

  1058. need to sin.

  1059. Of course

  1060. we're not yet

  1061. perfect.

  1062. That's why

  1063. Sunday by Sunday

  1064. we confess

  1065. our sins together.

  1066. We know that.

  1067. Sunday by Sunday

  1068. the Lord forgives

  1069. in accordance

  1070. with his promises.

  1071. We do still

  1072. give in to our

  1073. wrong desires.

  1074. Yet the Holy Spirit

  1075. is working

  1076. new desires in us.

  1077. So what has God

  1078. done?

  1079. How do we see

  1080. God's goodness?

  1081. He's caused us

  1082. to be born again

  1083. to be made

  1084. into new people.

1085. Why has he done it?

  1086. So we can be

  1087. first fruits.

  1088. Part of his

  1089. new creation.

1090. How has he done it?

  1091. Through the word

  1092. of truth.

  1093. The gospel

  1094. of the Lord

  1095. Jesus Christ.

  1096. And finally

1097. why did he do it?

  1098. Why did he go

  1099. to those lengths?

  1100. Why did he bother?

  1101. What does verse 18

  1102. tell us?

  1103. Of his own will.

  1104. It wasn't because

  1105. we asked him.

  1106. It wasn't because

  1107. he saw potentially

  1108. we would be good

  1109. one day.

1110. It was of his own will.

  1111. There was one

  1112. translation puts it

  1113. by his sovereign

  1114. plan he gave us

  1115. God.

  1116. That's the truth

  1117. James wants his

  1118. readers and wants

  1119. us to be clear

  1120. on.

  1121. The truth about

  1122. God.

  1123. He is good.

  1124. So how do we

  1125. remain steadfast in

  1126. trials?

  1127. How do we remain

  1128. steadfast under

  1129. temptation?

  1130. Now we need to

  1131. know the truth

  1132. about ourselves.

  1133. On the left

  1134. of ourselves we

  1135. will not remain

  1136. steadfast.

  1137. We will cave in.

  1138. We will act on

  1139. our desires.

  1140. Our desires will

  1141. give birth to sin

  1142. and sin to death.

  1143. That's the truth

  1144. about ourselves.

  1145. We are worse

  1146. than we ever

  1147. imagined.

  1148. We are not the

  1149. nice people that

  1150. society tells us

  1151. we are.

  1152. The truth about

  1153. us is worse

  1154. than we ever

  1155. imagined.

  1156. The truth about

  1157. God is better

  1158. than we could

  1159. ever dream.

  1160. He has chosen

  1161. to make us new

  1162. people.

  1163. He has chosen

  1164. to redeem.

  1165. Chosen to rescue.

  1166. He is unchanging,

  1167. perfect in all his

  1168. ways.

  1169. He has done

  1170. everything possible

  1171. for us through

  1172. the Lord Jesus

  1173. Christ.

  1174. That should

  1175. reassure us.

  1176. I hope it

  1177. reassures you.

  1178. It reassures me.

  1179. If it is of

  1180. God's own will

  1181. to bring me

  1182. forth to make

  1183. us new people

  1184. then that gives

  1185. me courage to

  1186. face up to the

  1187. desires of my

  1188. heart.

  1189. It gives me

  1190. confidence that

  1191. God will not

  1192. let me go no

  1193. matter how I

  1194. stray.

  1195. It means that

  1196. no matter what

  1197. the trials are

  1198. he will hold us

  1199. and keep us

  1200. nothing in the

  1201. world, nothing

  1202. the world can

  1203. offer can be

  1204. as good as

  1205. that crown of

  1206. life that he

  1207. holds out to

  1208. those whom he

  1209. loves, who he

  1210. keeps.

  1211. So because the

  1212. unchanging creator

  1213. God has brought

  1214. us forth, brought

1215. us to life by the

  1216. word of truth,

  1217. those who are

  1218. Christians will

  1219. single-mindedly

  1220. believe and

  1221. practice the truth

  1222. about ourselves

  1223. and about God.

  1224. John Newton, the

  1225. former slave

  1226. trader, as he

  1227. was dying in

  1228. December 1807

  1229. was visited by

  1230. a friend,

  1231. William J.

  1232. And he was a

  1233. very old man by

  1234. this day.

  1235. And J.

  1236. wrote these

  1237. words in his

  1238. diary about the

  1239. visit.

  1240. I saw Mr.

  1241. Newton near the

  1242. closing scene.

  1243. He was hardly

  1244. able to talk and

  1245. all I find I had

  1246. noted down upon

  1247. my leaving him

  1248. was this.

  1249. And he quotes

  1250. what Newton

  1251. had said.

  1252. My memory is

  1253. nearly gone, but

  1254. I remember two

  1255. things, that I am

  1256. a great sinner, and

  1257. that Christ is a

  1258. great saviour.

  1259. Those are the two

  1260. truths about

  1261. ourselves and about

  1262. God that James

  1263. wants us to know

  1264. too.

  1265. Let's pray.
