  1. And turn back to Ephesians chapter 2. Ephesians chapter 2, it's on page 976.

Ephesians 2 chapter mention Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  2. And if you were around this morning you might remember that we thought about good works in church life.

  3. ! And we thought about the danger of confusing working for Jesus with loving Jesus.

  4. And so often that is the biggest obstacle isn't it? We think we're loving him when we're busy.

  5. But actually we need to rethink that sometimes.

  6. And so after this morning I thought it would be helpful to think a bit more about good works in the Christian life.

  7. In church, in general and how we think about that in our lives.

  8. And so we're going to focus in on verse 8 to 10 of this astounding passage in Ephesians chapter 2.

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  9. So if you look down there.

  10. In verse 8 to 10 Paul is super repetitive, isn't he?

  11. He says the same thing pretty much over and over again, again and again, four or five times.

  12. And what he is saying to the Ephesians is, your salvation, Ephesians, has nothing to do with things that you have done.

  13. We've said that many times in this church before, haven't we?

  14. That the Christian gospel is not about what you can do for God.

  15. It is about what God has done for you.

  16. And that is what Paul repeats over and over again in these verses.

  17. And the first thing I think we want to see about good works from this passage is that good works can never be therefore the source of our salvation.

  18. But they are the goal of salvation.

  19. Let me read those verses out for us again.

  20. Verse 8.

  21. For by grace, by undeserved kindness, you have been saved through faith.

  22. Through looking outside of yourself to somebody else.

  23. That is how salvation has come.

  24. And this salvation is not your own doing.

  25. It is the gift of God.

  26. It's not a payment.

  27. It's not a wage given to us as if we've earned salvation.

  28. It's a gift.

  29. And he repeats it again, isn't it?

  30. Not a result of works so that no one may boast.

  31. For we are his workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

  32. So he repeats the same thing over and over again.

  33. Good works can never be the source of our salvation.

  34. But they are the goal of our salvation.

  35. You only have to look at the weight that Paul places on what God has done in the passage that we read earlier.

  36. To see that good works can never be the source of salvation.

  37. Look at verse 4.

  38. But God being rich in mercy because of the great love with which he loved us.

  39. Verse 5 made us alive.

  40. Verse 6 he raised us up.

  41. Verse 7 he might show his grace.

  42. It is a gift of God.

  43. Verse 8.

  44. So the thought that my works, the good things that I do in the Christian life, are the source of my salvation,

  45. is a thought that he needs to kind of address again and again, isn't it?

  46. It is a thought that just keeps coming back into my mind again and again.

  47. But I have to daily take that thought, that big thought, and grab hold of it and deliberately throw it in the skip every day.

  48. So Paul repeats himself here.

  49. We live under the false impression that there are a certain number of good things, good works,

  50. that need to be done in order for us to have a right relationship with God, to be saved.

  51. But when we do that, we're effectively weighing up the gift that God has given to us.

  52. We're weighing up Jesus' death on the cross with things that we can do.

  53. With cups of tea made, or times cleared up after church, or times reading the Bible, or writing sermons.

  54. So what are we saying when we think that?

  55. When we think that we can earn our salvation?

  56. What are we saying about God when we do that?

  57. We're saying, aren't we, that we don't really think our salvation is a gift.

  58. That he must want something in return.

  59. That ultimately the sacrifice must come from me and not him.

  60. So that's why Paul repeats himself,

  61. By grace you've been saved, not of your own doing.

  62. A gift of God, not a result of works.

  63. These works, these good works, are never the source of our salvation.

  64. But, and here's the thing, they are the goal of my salvation.

  65. Although my works don't bring me a right relationship with God,

  66. our good works are a necessary result of my right relationship with God.

  67. Verse 10, he says to them,

  68. You are created, we are created in Christ for good works.

  69. So salvation is not from my good works, but it is for good works.

  70. My salvation, it should lead me to a changed life.

  71. My right relationship with God will bear fruit.

  72. It will have evidence.

  73. So good works are not the grounds of my salvation,

  74. but they are evidence of my salvation.

  75. I was hearing the story of a teenage lad

  76. who had got into the habit of going up to his room

  77. and closing the door behind him and locking it

  78. to avoid speaking to his stepfather.

  79. There'd been problems in the family

  80. and he just wanted to lock himself away.

  81. He put a sign on the door saying,

  82. Keep out.

  83. But one week he'd heard the gospel.

  84. He'd heard this gospel of the Lord Jesus

  85. doing all that we need to have done for our salvation.

  86. He'd become helpless with Jesus.

  87. He put his faith in Jesus for his salvation.

  88. And he hadn't become perfect overnight, had he, when he did that.

  89. But when he'd got home, according to his stepdad,

  90. instead of locking his bedroom door,

  91. he'd propped it open and replaced the sign

  92. with one saying, Come in.

  93. All welcome.

  94. Now that teenage lad, he still had many sins

  95. to deal with, didn't he?

  96. But he had responded appropriately

  97. for his age and for his situation.

  98. He was obedient to Jesus.

  99. There was evidence of good work in his life.

  100. And that's where we see genuine faith in action, isn't it?

  101. Where it affects the nitty-gritty of our lives.

  102. He didn't prop his door open to earn his salvation, did he?

  103. That just wasn't in his mind.

  104. But it was the evidence of the salvation given to him.

  105. John Newton put it really well when he said,

  106. I am not what I ought to be,

  107. but I am not what I once was,

  108. and by God's grace I am what I am.

  109. Good works can never be the source of my salvation.

  110. And if they ever do,

  111. I've got to put that thought in the skip

  112. and throw it away.

  113. But, good works are the goal of my salvation.

  114. So that's the first thing that Paul tells them here.

  115. And the second thing is that good works in the Christian life

  116. come from God,

  117. but are walked in by us.

  118. Good works come from God,

  119. but are walked in by us.

  120. Have a look again at verse 10 there.

  121. For we are his workmanship,

  122. created in Christ Jesus for good works,

  123. which God prepared beforehand

  124. that we should walk in them.

  125. When you get to verse 10

  126. of this section in Ephesians,

  127. I wonder whether you sort of think a bit like me

  128. when I first started looking at this.

  129. Paul has done all of the great stuff

  130. in verse 1 to 9,

  131. which is wonderful and lovely,

  132. but now he's getting on to our part of the bargain,

  133. isn't he here?

  134. The word work comes up.

  135. God has done his stuff

  136. and now it's our turn.

  137. We're his workmanship.

  138. We're like his minions

  139. to do his thing in the church.

  140. But if we think like that,

  141. actually we've not really understood

  142. what he's saying here.

  143. The word workmanship there

  144. is not the word for workforce

  145. or a group of employees.

  146. But it's more like the word creation.

  147. We are his creation.

  148. It's the word that is used

  149. for a work of art

  150. or the work of a master designer

  151. or a carpenter,

  152. somebody like that.

  153. We are God's masterpiece.

  154. We are his great work of art,

  155. his handiwork.

  156. So we're not primarily the workers for God,

  157. but those being worked on by God.

  158. We are the furniture.

  159. We are the work of art.

  160. We are the canvas

  161. that the painter paints on.

  162. We are the produce, if you like,

  163. not the producers.

  164. And if you look back to verse 19 of chapter 1,

  165. you see there

  166. that the greatness of God's power

  167. has worked in those who believe in them.

  168. They are benefiting from God's work there,

  169. aren't they?

  170. But in verse 10,

  171. they are God's work.

  172. See the difference there?

  173. The word workmanship is,

  174. it's the same in the Greek Old Testament

  175. as in Psalm 100,

  176. which we read at the beginning.

  177. Remember that Psalm.

  178. Know that the Lord,

  179. he is God.

  180. It is he who made us

  181. and we are his,

  182. we are his people

  183. and the sheep of his pasture.

  184. Now you see the point is the same

  185. in that Psalm

  186. as it is in verse 10.

  187. The point is that we contribute

  188. nothing

  189. to being in his pasture,

  190. to being made by him,

  191. to being his creation.

  192. It's another reason

  193. that everything about us,

  194. who we are,

  195. the reason we are here,

  196. the source of our salvation

  197. is nothing to do

  198. with our good works

  199. because we are not the workers primarily,

  200. but those being worked on.

  201. So when it comes to the good works we do,

  202. they themselves

  203. can only come from God.

  204. We can only do good work

  205. because God is working with us,

  206. firstly.

  207. It means that the works we do

  208. in the church

  209. are not things that we drum up ourselves

  210. on our own

  211. because fundamentally

  212. we are the work of art,

  213. not the workers of art.

  214. We are created in Christ Jesus,

  215. Paul says.

  216. Jesus says,

  217. without me

  218. you can do

  219. nothing.

  220. Do we honestly think

  221. that this church

  222. would be here

  223. in a generation's time

  224. if we weren't

  225. attached to Christ Jesus?

  226. What's more,

  227. our good works

  228. come from God

  229. because they've been prepared

  230. beforehand.

  231. They have a divine origin.

  232. not from us

  233. but from God.

  234. Any good works,

  235. it's amazing isn't it,

  236. have been pre-prepared for us,

  237. decided in advance,

  238. ready for us to do.

  239. So God has not only chosen us

  240. for a relationship with him,

  241. but he's marked out the path

  242. of all the things that we will do.

  243. God has made us

  244. his workmanship.

  245. We only work

  246. because he works.

  247. And we only work

  248. because he's prepared

  249. those things

  250. for each one of us

  251. in advance to do.

  252. So I can only do anything

  253. with God's work in me.

  254. And all the good

  255. that I do do

  256. is prepared

  257. by God

  258. for me.

  259. And that's all

  260. from him,

  261. for him

  262. and to him.

  263. So,

  264. am I really doing

  265. the work at all

  266. here?

  267. That's the question,

  268. isn't it?

  269. Am I just a robot?

  270. Good works

  271. come from God

  272. and yet,

  273. Paul says,

  274. we should

  275. walk in them.

  276. verse 10.

  277. It's no good

  278. thinking that

  279. I can just be

  280. passive in all of this.

  281. God prepares

  282. these things

  283. for me to do

  284. in advance

  285. and like a sort of

  286. puppet,

  287. I'll do them.

  288. It would be wrong

  289. to go to the

  290. opposite extreme,

  291. wouldn't it,

  292. and say that

  293. Christianity

  294. is never about

  295. good works

  296. that I really do

  297. myself.

  298. And we shouldn't

  299. sort of be

  300. embarrassed about that.

  301. The Bible is

  302. full of commands

  303. for Christians,

  304. for believers

  305. to do the

  306. right thing,

  307. to live in

  308. the right way,

  309. isn't it?

  310. Romans chapter 6,

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  311. let not sin

  312. reigning your

  313. mortal bodies.

  314. Present your

  315. bodies as

  316. living sacrifices.

  317. And just note

  318. here that we're

  319. not talking about

  320. a list of jobs,

  321. are we?

  322. A do's and don'ts

  323. of the Christian

  324. life.

  325. But the verb

  326. in verse 10

  327. is to walk.

  328. To walk in

  329. these things.

  330. We are called

  331. to a transformed

  332. walk,

  333. a lifestyle.

  334. Galatians chapter

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  335. 5 I think is

  336. really helpful

  337. here,

  338. isn't it?

  339. It gives us

  340. a helpful list

  341. of what it is

  342. to walk in

  343. the Spirit,

  344. to live in

  345. the Spirit,

  346. to do good

  347. works,

  348. living along

  349. the grain of

  350. God's law,

  351. trusting in

  352. Jesus under

  353. the influence of

  354. the Holy Spirit,

  355. works of love

  356. and of joy

  357. and of peace,

  358. of kindness,

  359. of self-control,

  360. of goodness,

  361. of faithfulness,

  362. of gentleness.

  363. But it is that

  364. funny paradox,

  365. isn't it?

  366. Good works come

  367. from God

  368. and yet

  369. we have a part

  370. to play,

  371. we should walk

  372. in them.

  373. It's that verse

  374. in Philippians

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  375. chapter 2,

  376. work out your

  377. own salvation

  378. with fear and

  379. trembling because

  380. it is God

  381. who works

  382. in you,

  383. both to will

  384. and to work

  385. for his good

  386. pleasure.

  387. But that

  388. paradox,

  389. if you think

  390. about it,

  391. is greatly

  392. comforting really,

  393. isn't it?

  394. As we do

  395. work in the

  396. church,

  397. as we live

  398. the Christian

  399. life,

  400. as one

  401. theologian

  402. put it,

  403. we do not

  404. have to do

  405. any carrying

  406. without remembering

  407. that we are

  408. being carried.

  409. we work

  410. because God

  411. works in us.

  412. I think it's

  413. important to

  414. realise that

  415. that paradox

  416. there is,

  417. even though all

  418. our good works

  419. come from God,

  420. we should walk

  421. in them.

  422. We are actually

  423. doing those

  424. things,

  425. aren't we?

  426. And they are

  427. good things.

  428. I think we

  429. sometimes have a

  430. bit of unbalanced

  431. thinking on this,

  432. often I do.

  433. we know that

  434. the things that

  435. I do,

  436. that the good

  437. things that I

  438. do are tainted,

  439. aren't they?

  440. They are affected

  441. by my sin

  442. all of the time.

  443. I don't do

  444. things with a

  445. pure heart.

  446. I do things

  447. out of impure

  448. motives so

  449. often.

  450. And even the

  451. best things we

  452. do are like

  453. filthy rags.

  454. Now,

  455. Paul knows

  456. that,

  457. doesn't he,

  458. about the

  459. human condition.

  460. but oddly

  461. in this verse

  462. he still

  463. calls these

  464. works

  465. good.

  466. Good works.

  467. He doesn't

  468. shrink from

  469. that,

  470. does he?

  471. He doesn't

  472. add a little

  473. footnote to

  474. say good

  475. works,

  476. asterisk,

  477. but really

  478. they're a bit

  479. like filthy

  480. rags.

  481. No.

  482. The reason

  483. he doesn't

  484. do that

  485. is because

  486. they are

  487. really good

  488. works.

  489. because we

  490. are God's

  491. workmanship.

  492. As God's

  493. masterpiece,

  494. we are

  495. created in

  496. Christ.

  497. And so

  498. the things

  499. that we

  500. do are

  501. in Christ.

  502. We are

  503. attached to

  504. him.

  505. And so

  506. God really

  507. is pleased

  508. with the

  509. good works

  510. that we

  511. do because

  512. of Christ.

  513. He is

  514. pleased with

  515. them because

  516. we are

  517. attached to

  518. Christ.

  519. like branches

  520. attached to

  521. a vine,

  522. to a tree,

  523. whose

  524. spirit,

  525. Jesus,

  526. produces

  527. good fruit

  528. in us.

  529. And this

  530. does not

  531. stop him

  532. from being

  533. pleased with

  534. the good

  535. works in

  536. themselves,

  537. from a

  538. regenerated,

  539. renewed

  540. heart with

  541. the Holy

  542. Spirit.

  543. He sees

  544. our good

  545. works and

  546. he recognises

  547. Jesus in

  548. them,

  549. doesn't

  550. he?

  551. Because they

  552. are empowered

  553. by the

  554. Holy Spirit.

  555. You see

  556. how all of

  557. this fits

  558. together.

  559. When we

  560. think that

  561. our good

  562. works come

  563. from us,

  564. well,

  565. then yes,

  566. they are

  567. just filthy

  568. rags,

  569. aren't

  570. they?

  571. But good

  572. works come

  573. from God

  574. for us

  575. to walk

  576. in them.

  577. They are

  578. not the

  579. source,

  580. but the

  581. goal of

  582. our salvation

  583. from God

  584. walked in

  585. by us.

  586. So as

  587. we close

  588. now,

  589. I just

  590. want us

  591. to think

  592. about how

  593. this works

  594. a little

  595. bit in

  596. church life

  597. and how

  598. we talk

  599. about these

  600. things.

  601. How do

  602. these things

  603. work themselves

  604. out?

  605. When all

  606. ways in

  607. which we

  608. serve the

  609. Lord are

  610. from him,

  611. firstly,

  612. there is no

  613. room for

  614. boasting

  615. in church

  616. life is

  617. there.

  618. Paul says

  619. to the

  620. Corinthians,

  621. what do

  622. you have

  623. that you

  624. did not

  625. receive?

  626. If you

  627. then received

  628. it,

  629. why do

  630. you boast

  631. as if you

  632. did not

  633. receive it?

  634. There is

  635. always that

  636. temptation,

  637. isn't there,

  638. certainly for

  639. me,

  640. for rivalry,

  641. to slip

  642. in to

  643. things that

  644. we do

  645. in church,

  646. for jealousy

  647. of one

  648. another's

  649. gifts

  650. around us,

  651. of seeing

  652. other people's

  653. good works

  654. in their

  655. lives.

  656. But the

  657. gospel,

  658. it fumbles

  659. me because

  660. I can

  661. contribute

  662. nothing on

  663. my own,

  664. I cannot

  665. do anything,

  666. I can't do

  667. any good

  668. without God

  669. working in

  670. me.

  671. So we

  672. should thank

  673. God,

  674. shouldn't we,

  675. for all of

  676. the gifts

  677. and all of

  678. the good

  679. things that

  680. go on in

  681. this church.

  682. Because they

  683. are from

  684. the Lord,

  685. there is

  686. no room

  687. for boasting

  688. even quietly

  689. in our

  690. hearts.

  691. But at

  692. the same

  693. time we

  694. do, I

  695. think,

  696. have a

  697. warrant to

  698. say to

  699. each other,

  700. you have

  701. done good

  702. work,

  703. well done.

  704. The works

  705. come from

  706. God,

  707. but we

  708. really do

  709. walk in

  710. them

  711. ourselves.

  712. Paul says

  713. in 1

  714. Corinthians

  715. 15,

  716. by the

  717. grace of

  718. God I

  719. am what

  720. I am,

  721. and his

  722. grace towards

  723. me was

  724. not in

  725. vain,

  726. on the

  727. contrary,

  728. I worked

  729. harder than

  730. any of

  731. them.

  732. That is

  733. audacious,

  734. isn't it?

  735. I worked

  736. harder than

  737. any of

  738. them.

  739. Paul

  740. gives us

  741. a warrant,

  742. I think,

  743. there,

  744. to say,

  745. no,

  746. we have

  747. worked hard.

  748. We are

  749. allowed to

  750. celebrate

  751. one another's

  752. good works.

  753. we can

  754. say,

  755. well done,

  756. you did

  757. that.

  758. We can

  759. do that

  760. because

  761. they're not

  762. the source

  763. of our

  764. salvation,

  765. and it's

  766. no dishonour

  767. to Jesus

  768. to say

  769. well done

  770. to each

  771. other when

  772. we see

  773. growth and

  774. good work

  775. going on.

  776. That is

  777. not ungodly

  778. to do that

  779. because we

  780. know that

  781. those works

  782. come from

  783. God and

  784. they are

  785. evidence of

  786. his work

  787. in us.

  788. It's

  789. important to

  790. note how

  791. Paul

  792. couches

  793. that phrase

  794. I worked

  795. harder than

  796. any of

  797. them,

  798. isn't it?

  799. It's in

  800. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 15:10

  801. chapter 15

  802. verse 10

  803. if you want

  804. to look it

  805. up later.

  806. He says,

  807. by the

  808. grace of

  809. God

  810. I am

  811. what I

  812. am.

  813. He says,

  814. though it

  815. was not

  816. I,

  817. but the

  818. grace of

  819. God

  820. that is

  821. with me.

  822. We can

  823. say,

  824. well done

  825. I worked

  826. hard,

  827. but actually

  828. it was

  829. God

  830. who did

  831. the work.

  832. It was

  833. his grace

  834. in me.

  835. And there

  836. isn't a

  837. person in

  838. the church

  839. anywhere

  840. who doesn't

  841. have some

  842. work to

  843. do,

  844. some role

  845. to play.

  846. We are

  847. all God's

  848. workmanship,

  849. it's plural

  850. isn't it,

  851. that we

  852. are God's

  853. workmanship,

  854. collective,

  855. it's corporate,

  856. together.

  857. There is

  858. all good

  859. work for

  860. us to

  861. walk in.

  862. Let me

  863. tell you a

  864. quick story

  865. before we

  866. finish.

  867. It is

  868. told that

  869. a man

  870. went

  871. eagerly

  872. to a

  873. revival

  874. meeting,

  875. but he

  876. was late.

  877. And he

  878. found the

  879. workman

  880. tearing down

  881. the tent

  882. in which

  883. the meeting

  884. had been

  885. held a few

  886. moments earlier.

  887. And frantic

  888. at missing

  889. the evangelist,

  890. he decided

  891. to ask

  892. one of

  893. the workers

  894. what he

  895. could do

  896. to be

  897. saved.

  898. The

  899. workman

  900. who happened

  901. to be a

  902. Christian

  903. replied to

  904. the man,

  905. I'm afraid

  906. sir to tell

  907. you that

  908. you are

  909. too late.

  910. You cannot

  911. do anything.

  912. What do you

  913. mean?

  914. How can I

  915. be too

  916. late?

  917. The

  918. Christian

  919. replied,

  920. because the

  921. work has

  922. already been

  923. done.

  924. There is

  925. nothing left

  926. for you to

  927. do other

  928. than to

  929. believe it.

  930. That is the

  931. gospel.

  932. And when

  933. you forget

  934. that,

  935. take hold

  936. of that

  937. thought and

  938. throw it

  939. in the

  940. skip.

  941. And keep

  942. it there.

  943. Good works

  944. prepared for

  945. God,

  946. for us to

  947. walk in

  948. in advance,

  949. not the

  950. source,

  951. never the

  952. source,

  953. but the

  954. goal of our

  955. salvation,

  956. entirely from

  957. and through

  958. him,

  959. attached to

  960. Christ,

  961. empowered by

  962. him.

  963. So we

  964. can say

  965. well done

  966. to one

  967. another,

  968. because it

  969. is by

  970. grace,

  971. the grace

  972. of God,

  973. that I am

  974. not what I

  975. ought to

  976. be,

  977. and I am

  978. not what I

  979. once was,

  980. by the grace

  981. of God,

  982. I am what

  983. I am.

  984. Let's

  985. pray together.
