  1. Well, James chapter 2, as well as parts of the Bible, which much ink has been spilled over.

    James 2 chapter mention

  2. ! A couple of years ago, I got a text message from a friend of mine, for the sake of argument, we'll call Gavin.

  3. Gavin was, is, was, is a faithful minister in a Bible-believing church.

  4. He was well-loved by his congregation and by his family.

  5. And I don't recall all the details of the text message, but it basically read like this.

  6. He quoted chapter 2, verse 24.

  7. You see, a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.

  8. I couldn't be reading the whole passage that morning.

  9. He said this, Stuart, am I alright? Am I a Christian? Help me.

  10. What are your feelings is as you read these words?

  11. James is very stark, isn't he?

  12. Verse 17.

  13. Faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

  14. Verse 20.

  15. Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless?

  16. Verse 26.

  17. For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, it's also faith apart from works is dead.

  18. It's very strange, isn't it?

  19. James is not beating about the bush.

  20. And that's what got Gavin worried.

  21. That's what got him thinking.

  22. And his worry made him text me.

  23. He wanted to be sure he was justified.

  24. He was forgiven.

  25. He was part of God's people.

  26. And I think that's exactly why James, inspired by the Holy Spirit, wrote these words.

  27. He wanted to shake up complacent people.

  28. He wanted to shake up his readers.

  29. As we read through this book, we realise they were double-minded, as he calls them, back in chapter 1, verse 6.

  30. They had spiritual schizophrenia.

  31. They would pray, but not really believe that God would answer prayers.

  32. They would love to hear God's word preached, but they'd never actually respond and do anything to obey.

  33. They all, chapter 3, verse 1, wanted to be teachers.

  34. They were really into the Bible.

  35. But actually, they loved the world.

  36. They wanted all the things the world wanted.

  37. Chapter 4, verse 4.

  38. You ask and you do not receive, because you ask wrongly to spend it on your passions.

  39. You adulterous people.

  40. Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God?

  41. They would split people.

  42. Divided in their thinking.

  43. Divided in their hearts.

  44. Divided in their loyalty.

  45. So James is rattling their cage.

  46. For those who know their theology, and say we're saved by faith, we can cross out, fold our arms now.

  47. He wants to get them thinking.

  48. And James' main point is the point that my friend Gavin got.

  49. That actually faith without works is useless.

  50. Now at first sight, this might sound like James is contradicting the Apostle Paul.

  51. So if you compare James, chapter 2, verse 24, you see the person is justified by works and not by faith alone.

    James 2:24

  52. And then if you read Romans 3, verse 28, Paul writing,

    Romans 3:28

  53. For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from the works of the Lord.

  54. You might think there's a contradiction there.

  55. Well, we'll see.

  56. Clearly there isn't.

  57. Because the Bible does not contradict itself.

  58. We'll see why later on.

  59. But first, we need to make sure we understand what James is saying.

  60. What James is saying.

  61. And he's wanting us to understand the genuine saving faith.

  62. What it looks like.

  63. What is the nature of true faith.

  64. He's going to tell us three things about it.

  65. First of all, it's more than mere profession.

  66. It's more than mere confession.

  67. But rather it results in transformation.

  68. It's more than mere profession.

  69. It's more than mere confession.

  70. It results in transformation.

  71. Let's put it another way.

  72. It's more than merely saying the right words.

  73. More than merely agreeing with the right doctrine.

  74. Rather, it's embracing God's promises wholeheartedly.

  75. So first of all, true faith is more than mere profession.

  76. It's more than merely saying the right words.

  77. Look at verse 14.

  78. What good is it, my brothers,

  79. is, my brothers,

  80. if someone says he has faith,

  81. but does not have words,

  82. can that faith save him?

  83. Now the original language is clear.

  84. The answer to that question is,

  85. no, such faith cannot save you.

  86. So the problem James is getting at

  87. is the problem of people claiming to have faith,

  88. but not actually living it out.

  89. It's just mere words.

  90. It's just their talk.

  91. People can claim all sorts of things.

  92. I can claim to be a great football player.

  93. You look at my life,

  94. you'll probably see I never was,

  95. and never will be.

  96. So James says,

  97. it's not just what you claim.

  98. Today, many people still claim to be Christian.

  99. You know, a census form,

  100. they'll tick a box.

  101. Or they'll say,

  102. I prayed that sinner's prayer on us,

  103. as a student,

  104. or as a young person at camp.

  105. Or I've been to church,

  106. or I've been baptized.

  107. James says that,

  108. it's more than mere profession,

  109. it's more than merely saying the right thing.

  110. And that's what his whole illustration here,

  111. the point of his illustration,

  112. verse 15.

  113. If a brother or sister is poorly clothed,

  114. and lacking in daily food,

  115. and one of you says to them,

  116. go in peace,

  117. be warmed and filled.

  118. That's actually a prayer.

  119. It's actually a prayer.

  120. Oh, you're suffering.

  121. Be warm, be filled.

  122. As in, God fill you,

  123. God warm you up.

  124. If you say those things,

  125. without giving them the things needed for the body,

  126. what good is that?

  127. It's an illustration of words themselves

  128. being powerless and useless.

  129. You might say the right things,

  130. but if you have the resources to help someone,

  131. James says,

  132. and you're not actually helping them,

  133. that's no good.

  134. Likewise, faith without any action

  135. is no good.

  136. Now, this was obviously happening

  137. in James' church.

  138. All through this book,

  139. we see a division between the wealthy,

  140. the haves and the have-nots.

  141. So James is using this illustration

  142. to, again,

  143. to rattle their cage a bit.

  144. And it's quite testing for us as well,

  145. as Simon was saying this morning,

  146. how easy it is for us

  147. to turn away from the adverts on the tube

  148. because of our compassion fatigue.

  149. And of course,

  150. we can't respond to every advert

  151. for money on the tube.

  152. But that's not the point.

  153. But it's so easy, isn't it,

  154. for us to pray for our brothers and sisters

  155. around the world in need,

  156. but not actually do things.

  157. It's much harder to get involved

  158. in the Ealing Church's

  159. winter night shelter.

  160. It's much harder to actually give

  161. to Christian organisations.

  162. But James is also using this example

  163. to remind them of something

  164. he's told them.

  165. Back in verses 12 and 13,

  166. he reminded them

  167. they have to live

  168. as those who will be judged

  169. under the law of liberty.

  170. That is, the law as fulfilled

  171. and explained by Christ.

  172. He's reminded them

  173. there's a day coming

  174. when Jesus will come back

  175. and judge his people.

  176. And in Matthew chapter 25,

    Matthew 25 chapter mention

  177. Jesus told a story

  178. about that day.

  179. The parable of the sheep

  180. and the goats.

  181. And Jesus tells

  182. that he will come back

  183. as a king on his throne

  184. and divide the people

  185. of sheep and goats.

  186. And James is actually

  187. using words from that story.

  188. Here.

  189. Because in that story,

  190. Jesus says to the sheep,

  191. to those who are his people,

  192. to those who are going to be

  193. accepted into the eternal kingdom,

  194. he says this,

  195. Come you who are blessed

  196. by my Father.

  197. This is Matthew 25,

    Matthew 25:34

  198. verse 34.

  199. Inherit the kingdom

  200. prepared for you

  201. from the foundation

  202. of the world.

  203. For I was hungry

  204. and you gave me food.

  205. I was naked

  206. and you clothed me.

  207. And in the parable,

  208. the sheep then say,

  209. When did we see you hungry?

  210. When did we feed you?

  211. When did we clothe you?

  212. Jesus says,

  213. What you did for the least

  214. of my brothers and sisters,

  215. you did for me.

  216. James is picking up

  217. on the words of that parable

  218. inserting it here.

  219. You see a brother or sister?

  220. You don't feed them?

  221. What kind of faith is that?

  222. He says.

  223. Remember,

  224. judgment is coming.

  225. The Lord Jesus

  226. will sit on his throne

  227. and judge.

  228. Your faith should be seen

  229. in your deeds.

  230. I notice it's not that

  231. the good works

  232. in that parable

  233. saved the people.

  234. Those sheep didn't even know

  235. they fed the Lord Jesus.

  236. When did that happen?

  237. Rather,

  238. it was their faith

  239. worked out

  240. and practiced in their lives

  241. that led to those actions.

  242. It was that transforming faith,

  243. the genuine faith they had

  244. that showed

  245. they trusted in Christ

  246. and resulted in

  247. being new people.

  248. James is reminding

  249. his readers of this.

  250. True faith

  251. is more than

  252. merely saying

  253. the right words.

  254. True faith

  255. is more than

  256. mere profession,

  257. we might say.

  258. It's more than

  259. just saying

  260. the right words.

  261. But secondly,

  262. true faith

  263. is more than

  264. merely agreeing

  265. with the right doctrine.

  266. It's more than

  267. merely agreeing

  268. with the right doctrine.

  269. Look at

  270. verse 18.

  271. James comes back

  272. with an imagined

  273. objector.

  274. But someone will say,

  275. you have faith

  276. and I have works.

  277. Show me your faith

  278. apart from your works

  279. and I will show you

  280. my faith

  281. by my works.

  282. You believe

  283. that God is one,

  284. you do well.

  285. even the demons

  286. believe

  287. and shadow.

  288. See, the demons

  289. have great theology.

  290. There was a lady

  291. in our last church

  292. who was actually

  293. into witchcraft.

  294. She was a Satanist.

  295. She introduced herself

  296. as a Satanist.

  297. And she was miraculously

  298. saved and came to the Lord.

  299. One of the interesting

  300. things she told me

  301. was actually

  302. all the Satanists

  303. fully understand

  304. that they're on

  305. the believing team.

  306. That's part of the doctrine.

  307. They do know

  308. that Jesus is one

  309. and they persist

  310. in their rebellion.

  311. They've got great theology

  312. just like the demons

  313. who knew Jesus was Lord.

  314. They believe

  315. and shudder.

  316. The danger is

  317. we can be like them.

  318. We can believe

  319. the right things

  320. and yet we don't

  321. actually respond.

  322. There's no real change

  323. in our lives.

  324. Even the demons,

  325. James says,

  326. shudder.

  327. They do respond in some way.

  328. It does affect them

  329. a little bit.

  330. But what about you,

  331. James says?

  332. Does it affect you?

  333. I think it's a real problem

  334. for churches like the churches

  335. I've lived in,

  336. grown up in

  337. and served in.

  338. Churches like us.

  339. Where we are rightly

  340. concerned for white doctrine.

  341. We're rightly concerned

  342. to hold to what

  343. the scriptures teach.

  344. But so often

  345. we can think

  346. that is sufficient.

  347. You know,

  348. I've heard people saying

  349. not about this church

  350. but about a number of churches.

  351. Yeah,

  352. we're a gospel-centered church.

  353. We love people

  354. by sharing the gospel

  355. with them.

  356. We're not into

  357. social action.

  358. You can feed people

  359. all you like

  360. but that won't

  361. save them from hell.

  362. Well,

  363. yes,

  364. that is true

  365. to an extent

  366. but it's a false

  367. dichotomy.

  368. For if we have

  369. faith in Christ

  370. our lives will be

  371. transformed.

  372. Our lives will be

  373. different.

  374. If it's merely

  375. intellectual

  376. then it's not

  377. genuine faith.

  378. That's what Paul's

  379. saying,

  380. what James is saying.

  381. True faith

  382. is not merely

  383. agreeing with

  384. the right doctrine.

  385. At the end of a

  386. Christianity explored

  387. many years ago

  388. a friend of me,

  389. an old colleague of mine

  390. from my old childhood

  391. come along

  392. turned to me

  393. and said

  394. so what are you

  395. saying?

  396. All I need to do

  397. is believe this

  398. and that's all.

  399. Is it really that simple?

  400. Of course,

  401. the answer to Thomas'

  402. question

  403. isn't really that simple

  404. is yes

  405. and no.

  406. Yes,

  407. it is that simple.

  408. We simply trust

  409. in Jesus Christ.

  410. That's all we have to do.

  411. But simply trusting

  412. in Jesus Christ

  413. isn't merely

  414. agreeing

  415. with the doctrine.

  416. The demons

  417. believe the doctrine

  418. but it doesn't

  419. change them.

  420. That's a danger

  421. for us,

  422. isn't it?

  423. I was never taught

  424. the catechism growing up.

  425. I wish I was.

  426. It would be a great

  427. thing to have learned

  428. when I was young.

  429. But there's a danger,

  430. isn't there,

  431. that we think that

  432. teaching the catechism

  433. to our children

  434. makes them good believers

  435. and that's it.

  436. I'm so glad

  437. I learned many

  438. memory verses

  439. when I was a child.

  440. I should encourage

  441. my children

  442. to learn more

  443. memory verses.

  444. But even just

  445. knowing the memory verses

  446. doesn't change it,

  447. doesn't save it.

  448. Intellectual assent,

  449. agreeing with

  450. the right doctrine,

  451. isn't genuine faith.

  452. As one commentator

  453. perceptibly put it

  454. on this verse,

  455. it is a good thing

  456. to possess

  457. accurate theology

  458. it is a good thing

  459. to possess accurate theology

  460. but it's unsatisfactory

  461. unless that good theology

  462. possesses us.

  463. It's good to possess

  464. the right theology

  465. but does our theology

  466. possess us?

  467. Are our hearts

  468. gripped by it?

  469. See,

  470. true faith

  471. is more than

  472. mere profession.

  473. It's more than

  474. saying the right words.

  475. True faith

  476. is more than

  477. mere confession,

  478. agreeing with

  479. the right doctrine.

  480. True faith

  481. embraces God's promises

  482. wholeheartedly.

  483. And that's James' point

  484. in verses 20-26.

  485. And this genuine faith

  486. results in transformation

  487. when we embrace

  488. God's promises

  489. wholeheartedly.

  490. And that's why James

  491. uses these two examples

  492. in the Old Testament.

  493. One is Abraham,

  494. the ultimate insider,

  495. the great father

  496. of the faith.

  497. The other is

  498. Abraham,

  499. the ultimate outsider,

  500. the Canaanite

  501. prostitute.

  502. And James is using

  503. these two extreme

  504. examples to say

  505. that it doesn't

  506. matter whether

  507. you're the best

  508. of people

  509. or the worst

  510. of people,

  511. true faith

  512. will be shown

  513. in your actions,

  514. not merely your words

  515. and assenting

  516. the right doctrines.

  517. So let's look

  518. at these two examples.

  519. God had promised

  520. Abraham an heir.

  521. In Genesis chapter 15

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  522. God had promised

  523. a son from Abraham's

  524. own body

  525. who would be

  526. his heir

  527. through whom

  528. God's great promises

  529. to Abraham

  530. would carry forward.

  531. In Genesis chapter 15

    Genesis 15:6

  532. verse 6

  533. Abraham looks up

  534. at the stars in the sky

  535. because God had said

  536. God has made

  537. descendants of stars

  538. in the sky.

  539. Abraham believed God

  540. in verse 6

  541. of chapter 15

  542. of Genesis

  543. we're told

  544. Abraham believed God

  545. and God credited

  546. it to him

  547. as righteousness.

  548. Then over 30 years later

  549. when that son

  550. had been born

  551. and Isaac had been born

  552. God chested Abraham

  553. in Genesis chapter 22

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  554. said go

  555. sacrifice Isaac

  556. your only son

  557. whom you love

  558. take him

  559. and sacrifice him.

  560. That was to test

  561. his faith.

  562. It was a trial

  563. just as James' readers

  564. were undergoing trials

  565. as we read in chapter 1.

  566. But Abraham did that.

  567. He set off

  568. with his servants

  569. he set off

  570. with Isaac

  571. and with fire

  572. to go up

  573. onto Mount Moriah

  574. to sacrifice his son.

  575. Why did he do it?

  576. Well here's

  577. because he embraced

  578. God's promises

  579. wholeheartedly.

  580. Here's how the writer

  581. of the Hebrews

  582. in the New Testament

  583. puts it.

  584. By faith

  585. Abraham

  586. when he was tested

  587. offered up Isaac

  588. and he who had

  589. received the promises

  590. was in the act

  591. of offering up

  592. his only son

  593. at whom it was said

  594. through Isaac

  595. shall your offspring

  596. be named.

  597. He considered

  598. that God was able

  599. even to raise him

  600. from the dead

  601. from which figuratively

  602. speaking

  603. he did receive him back.

  604. In other words

  605. Abraham believed

  606. God's promises

  607. he embraced

  608. God's promises

  609. wholeheartedly.

  610. So he figured

  611. I don't understand

  612. what's going on here

  613. but I believe

  614. if I take my son

  615. up this mountain

  616. to sacrifice him

  617. God can bring him

  618. back from the dead

  619. if necessary.

  620. God will do

  621. what he's promised.

  622. Abraham embraced

  623. those promises

  624. wholeheartedly.

  625. See faith isn't

  626. merely about

  627. doing good things.

  628. That's not

  629. James' point

  630. is it?

  631. James isn't saying

  632. do good things

  633. because you believe.

  634. He's saying

  635. embrace God's promises

  636. wholeheartedly

  637. as Abraham did.

  638. See faith is

  639. in that sense

  640. well it's not

  641. irrational

  642. it's super rational

  643. super irrational

  644. bigger than reason.

  645. Abraham did

  646. what seemed

  647. completely irrational

  648. because he trusted

  649. something better

  650. than human reason.

  651. He trusted

  652. the word of God

  653. he trusted

  654. what God had promised.

  655. And that's what we see

  656. with Rahab as well

  657. this other example.

  658. So Rahab lived

  659. in the city of Jericho

  660. you can read

  661. the story

  662. of Joshua

    Joshua 2 chapter mention

  663. chapter 2

  664. and chapter 5

  665. and Joshua

  666. had sent some spies

  667. in to check out

  668. the city

  669. and they had

  670. hidden themselves

  671. at Rahab's house

  672. where they'd gone

  673. to Rahab's house

  674. Rahab had hidden

  675. them in the roof

  676. of her building.

  677. The king of Jericho

  678. sent soldiers around

  679. to get these men

  680. and Rahab lied

  681. sent the soldiers

  682. off in the opposite

  683. direction

  684. and then got the men

  685. down from the roof

  686. and said to them

  687. this

  688. I know

  689. that the Lord

  690. has given you

  691. the land

  692. and the fear

  693. of you

  694. has fallen on us.

  695. How did she know that?

  696. She knew it

  697. because she'd heard

  698. how God had rescued

  699. them out of Egypt.

  700. She'd heard

  701. how they'd come

  702. across the Red Sea.

  703. She'd heard

  704. as all the people

  705. of Jericho had

  706. how God had defeated

  707. the Amorite kings.

  708. She'd heard

  709. how Israel

  710. had come across

  711. the Jordan River

  712. or would soon

  713. come across

  714. the Jordan River.

  715. So she believed

  716. God's great promise

  717. that he was going

  718. to give

  719. that land

  720. to Israel.

  721. Even as a complete

  722. outsider

  723. someone who worshipped

  724. other gods

  725. she still believed

  726. God's promise.

  727. And so

  728. because she rescued

  729. those spies

  730. when the Israelites

  731. came over

  732. and destroyed

  733. under God's orders

  734. destroyed Jericho

  735. she was saved.

  736. That was the sense

  737. in which she was

  738. justified.

  739. She was rescued

  740. from God's

  741. just judgment

  742. against that city

  743. because she had

  744. shown her faith

  745. by saving

  746. the spies.

  747. She embraced

  748. God's promises

  749. wholeheartedly

  750. and so she was

  751. transformed

  752. she was completely

  753. different

  754. to everyone else

  755. in Jericho

  756. who did not believe.

  757. See by these examples

  758. James is demonstrating

  759. that for everyone

  760. true faith

  761. has the same effect.

  762. It's shown

  763. in actions

  764. it leads to a

  765. transformation

  766. in our lives.

  767. It's not merely

  768. about profession

  769. or confession

  770. it's about embracing

  771. God's promises

  772. wholeheartedly.

  773. Now that's the

  774. conclusion

  775. there's a bit of

  776. detail we need to go into

  777. if we look at

  778. verses 20 to 23

  779. because James

  780. tells us more

  781. about the quality

  782. of this true faith

  783. as we look at the

  784. details of his argument.

  785. So verse 21

  786. was not Abraham

  787. our father

  788. justified by works

  789. when he offered up

  790. his son Isaac

  791. on the altar?

  792. You see that faith

  793. was active

  794. along with his works

  795. and faith was

  796. completed by his works

  797. and the scripture

  798. was fulfilled

  799. that says Abraham

  800. believed God

  801. and it was counted

  802. to him as righteousness

  803. and he was called

  804. a friend of God.

  805. Now at some point

  806. this seems like a

  807. contradiction

  808. doesn't it?

  809. Romans 4

  810. Paul says

  811. Abraham

  812. Paul uses this

  813. Abraham as the

  814. example of being

  815. justified by faith

  816. not by works

  817. yet James

  818. seems to say

  819. exactly the opposite

  820. Abraham is justified

  821. by his actions

  822. not by faith alone.

  823. How does that work out?

  824. Well we see the

  825. difference between

  826. the two situations

  827. that these writers

  828. are dealing with

  829. and also what they say.

  830. So Paul is writing

  831. about the chronology

  832. of faith

  833. the timing of it

  834. so Abraham's faith

  835. came first

  836. that was where

  837. it all started

  838. whereas James

  839. is writing about

  840. the quality

  841. of Abraham's faith

  842. he's showing how

  843. that faith played

  844. out in the rest

  845. of his life.

  846. Paul was dealing

  847. with a situation

  848. where people thought

  849. their own works

  850. were all important

  851. what they do

  852. is all important

  853. that their works

  854. make them right

  855. with God

  856. so they were

  857. rejecting the

  858. sufficiency

  859. of Christ's

  860. sacrifice alone

  861. and falling into

  862. the trap of

  863. legalism

  864. of trying to do

  865. the right things

  866. to be with God

  867. to be God's

  868. friends.

  869. So Paul's

  870. dealing with a

  871. situation where

  872. works are all

  873. important

  874. James is dealing

  875. with a situation

  876. where people think

  877. works are of

  878. no importance

  879. they can just

  880. let go and let

  881. God

  882. so they were

  883. emptying the cross

  884. and resurrection

  885. of Christ

  886. of its power

  887. in a different way

  888. they were emptying

  889. of its power

  890. to change lives

  891. to transform

  892. them

  893. make them new

  894. people

  895. their temptation

  896. was not legalism

  897. but license

  898. anything goes

  899. I believe

  900. Jesus died for me

  901. I can do

  902. whatever I want

  903. so James is

  904. talking about

  905. the quality

  906. of Abraham's

  907. faith

  908. the quality

  909. of genuine

  910. faith

  911. that truly

  912. trusts in

  913. Christ

  914. in his death

  915. and resurrection

  916. to make us

  917. right with God

  918. three qualities

  919. he draws out

  920. verse 22

  921. first of all

  922. it's active

  923. not passive

  924. verse 22

  925. you see that

  926. faith was active

  927. along with his

  928. works

  929. in the original

  930. language

  931. it's literally

  932. faith works

  933. together

  934. with his

  935. works

  936. faith was

  937. the fuel

  938. the power

  939. how does a car

  940. move

  941. well it's because

  942. it's got an engine

  943. but it's got fuel

  944. that goes in the engine

  945. there's no fuel

  946. it won't go anywhere

  947. the fuel works

  948. together with the engine

  949. to make the car move

  950. so faith works

  951. with Abraham's

  952. works

  953. it is active

  954. it drives action

  955. faith is not

  956. passive

  957. God pleasing

  958. works do not

  959. happen without

  960. faith

  961. and in the original

  962. language as well

  963. it's this sense of

  964. this was an ongoing

  965. thing throughout

  966. Abraham's life

  967. faith was constantly

  968. active with his

  969. works

  970. not just a one

  971. off thing

  972. so faith is

  973. active

  974. secondly

  975. genuine faith

  976. matures as it

  977. works

  978. look at verse 22

  979. faith was completed

  980. by his works

  981. that word completed

  982. is often translated

  983. perfect

  984. or mature

  985. and with maturity

  986. the idea here is

  987. of the faith

  988. developing

  989. as it is used

  990. as it is exercised

  991. a bit like

  992. muscle matures

  993. as you exercise

  994. as it grows

  995. or sometimes

  996. you hear football

  997. commentators

  998. talking about

  999. a young player

  1000. being a bit naive

  1001. in what he did

  1002. I don't know

  1003. when they say that

  1004. such a misuse

  1005. of the word naive

  1006. anyway

  1007. very naive there

  1008. he needs to be

  1009. a bit more mature

  1010. and as he gets

  1011. more experience

  1012. he gets more

  1013. mature

  1014. it's the same

  1015. way with faith

  1016. faith matures

  1017. as it is used

  1018. as it is exercised

  1019. so a young footballer

  1020. matures

  1021. as he gets more

  1022. experience

  1023. see Abraham

  1024. had faith

  1025. when he believed

  1026. in God's promise

  1027. but faith became

  1028. more mature

  1029. throughout his life

  1030. as he exercised it

  1031. through ups and downs

1032. and it came to his

  1033. most evident maturity

  1034. in the test

  1035. of sacrificing Isaac

  1036. and with the idea

  1037. of maturity

  1038. there's an idea

  1039. of a purpose

  1040. there isn't it

  1041. something to be

  1042. mature

  1043. means it has to

  1044. have a goal

  1045. have a purpose

  1046. and so it is

  1047. faith

  1048. is meant to

  1049. mature

  1050. it's meant to

  1051. grow

  1052. and it grows

  1053. as it is exercised

  1054. and the ultimate

  1055. goal is

  1056. transformation

  1057. so back in

  1058. chapter 1

  1059. verse 18

  1060. maybe over the

  1061. page in your

  1062. Bible

  1063. James said this

  1064. of God's own

  1065. will

  1066. he brought us

  1067. forth by the

  1068. word of truth

  1069. that we should

  1070. be a kind of

  1071. first fruits of

  1072. his creatures

  1073. see God's goal

  1074. is transformation

  1075. that we should

  1076. be different

  1077. we shouldn't

  1078. remain static

  1079. and unchanged

  1080. we should mature

  1081. as our faith

  1082. is used

  1083. and developed

  1084. over time

  1085. see faith is

  1086. completed and

  1087. matures as we

  1088. exercise it

  1089. so it's active

  1090. it matures

  1091. and thirdly

  1092. it finally

  1093. results in

  1094. justification

  1095. look at verse

  1096. 23

  1097. the scripture

  1098. was fulfilled

  1099. that says

  1100. Abraham believed

  1101. God and it

  1102. was counted to

  1103. him as

  1104. righteousness

  1105. now in what

  1106. sense was that

  1107. scripture fulfilled

  1108. there are at

  1109. least three ways

  1110. the Bible can talk

  1111. about scripture

  1112. being fulfilled

  1113. we might talk

  1114. about things

  1115. being fulfilled

  1116. in our own

  1117. lives

  1118. it can be a

  1119. promise being

  1120. fulfilled

  1121. and that certainly

  1122. happens

  1123. it's not quite what

  1124. James means here

  1125. or secondly

  1126. a pattern

  1127. or a role

  1128. can be fulfilled

  1129. so if you think

  1130. back as far as

  1131. Christmas

  1132. which is not

  1133. long ago

  1134. we often have

  1135. that reading

  1136. don't we

  1137. from Matthew

    Matthew 2 chapter mention

  1138. chapter 2

  1139. this was

  1140. happened to

  1141. fulfill what

  1142. God had said

  1143. through the

  1144. prophet Hosea

  1145. out of Egypt

  1146. I called my

  1147. son

  1148. there Jesus

  1149. was fulfilling

  1150. an Old

  1151. Testament pattern

  1152. that as

  1153. Israel had

  1154. been in Egypt

  1155. and was called

  1156. out of Egypt

  1157. so Jesus

  1158. as God's

  1159. perfect son

  1160. was down

  1161. in Egypt

  1162. and brought

  1163. out of Egypt

  1164. for his

  1165. ministry

  1166. so you can

  1167. fulfill a

  1168. promise

  1169. or fulfill

  1170. a pattern

  1171. or

  1172. this is what

  1173. James is

  1174. doing here

  1175. something can

  1176. be fulfilled

  1177. in reaching

  1178. its ultimate

  1179. significance

  1180. so Jesus

  1181. says that

  1182. I haven't

  1183. come to

  1184. abolish the

  1185. law and

  1186. the prophets

  1187. Matthew 5

  1188. 17

  1189. but I've

  1190. come to

  1191. fulfill

  1192. them

  1193. in other

  1194. words I've

  1195. come to

  1196. bring them

  1197. to that

  1198. ultimate

  1199. significance

  1200. to do

  1201. all that

  1202. was written

  1203. in the

  1204. past

  1205. to fulfill

  1206. to bring

  1207. it to

  1208. its greatest

  1209. significance

  1210. and that's

  1211. the way

  1212. James is

  1213. using the

  1214. word here

  1215. God had

  1216. said 30

  1217. years earlier

  1218. that Abraham's

  1219. faith was

  1220. counted as

  1221. righteousness

  1222. now that

  1223. reaches its

  1224. full significance

  1225. as we see

  1226. this man

  1227. Abraham

  1228. prepared to

  1229. sacrifice his

  1230. own son on

  1231. the altar

  1232. but he's been

  1233. so transformed

  1234. through his

  1235. faith in the

  1236. living God

  1237. as life goes

  1238. on

  1239. and what's

  1240. the final

  1241. result of

  1242. that

  1243. what's

  1244. Abraham

  1245. called

  1246. at the

  1247. end of

  1248. verse 23

  1249. a friend

  1250. of God

  1251. a friend

  1252. of God

  1253. so James

  1254. is using

  1255. justification

  1256. in a slightly

  1257. different way

  1258. to Paul

  1259. when Paul

  1260. talks about

  1261. justification

  1262. he's always

  1263. talking about

  1264. the initial

  1265. declaration

  1266. by God

  1267. of our

  1268. innocence

  1269. before him

  1270. when we

  1271. trusted him

  1272. but justification

  1273. is used in a

  1274. number of ways

  1275. in the Bible

  1276. James uses it

  1277. in a different

  1278. way

  1279. and here

  1280. he's talking

  1281. about the

  1282. final

  1283. declaration

  1284. the public

  1285. declaration

  1286. by God

  1287. of our

  1288. innocence

  1289. before him

  1290. when Christ

  1291. returns

  1292. we can see

  1293. that because

  1294. that's the

  1295. whole context

  1296. here

  1297. back in

  1298. verses 12

  1299. and 13

  1300. James has

  1301. been saying

  1302. judgment

  1303. is coming

  1304. he's alluded

  1305. to the parable

  1306. of the sheep

  1307. and the goats

  1308. where people

  1309. are finally

  1310. publicly

  1311. justified

  1312. their faith

  1313. demonstrated

  1314. by their

  1315. actions

  1316. it's clear

  1317. from the

  1318. example

  1319. of Rahab

  1320. she was

  1321. justified

  1322. in that

  1323. judgment

  1324. she was

  1325. saved

  1326. from that

  1327. judgment

  1328. as the

  1329. Israelite

  1330. soldiers

  1331. came in

  1332. and

  1333. enacted

  1334. God's

  1335. judgment

  1336. on the

  1337. city

  1338. of Jericho

  1339. so here

  1340. James'

  1341. meaning

  1342. that through

  1343. a lifetime

  1344. of faith

  1345. will ultimately

  1346. result in

  1347. vindication

  1348. in the

  1349. final declaration

  1350. of innocence

  1351. before God

  1352. when Christ

  1353. returns

  1354. as judge

  1355. that's

  1356. why we

  1357. go on

  1358. showing our

  1359. faith in

  1360. our works

  1361. he says

  1362. that's what

  1363. true faith

  1364. is like

  1365. it is

  1366. expressed

  1367. in works

  1368. it is

  1369. active

  1370. it matures

  1371. and it will

  1372. result in that

  1373. final declaration

  1374. of being

  1375. God's friend

  1376. so what does

  1377. faith look like

  1378. that really

  1379. embraces

  1380. God's promises

  1381. well what did

  1382. it look like

  1383. for Rahab

  1384. and Abraham

  1385. it didn't mean

  1386. doing nice

  1387. things necessarily

  1388. did it

  1389. it didn't mean

  1390. being a nice

  1391. person

  1392. it meant

  1393. taking God

  1394. at his word

  1395. it meant

  1396. doing things

  1397. that seemed

  1398. crazy to the

  1399. world around

  1400. no one else

  1401. in Jericho

  1402. was about to

  1403. take in

  1404. Israelite slaves

  1405. no one else

  1406. in Jericho

  1407. was about to

  1408. lie to the

  1409. king

  1410. and send

  1411. his soldiers

  1412. off in

  1413. the other

  1414. direction

  1415. to Abraham's

  1416. servants

  1417. who must have

  1418. seemed mad

  1419. taking Isaac

  1420. off to be

  1421. all to be

  1422. sacrificed

  1423. and yet

  1424. that's because

  1425. they trusted

  1426. something better

  1427. and bigger

  1428. and stronger

  1429. than human

  1430. reason

  1431. they trusted

  1432. God's promises

  1433. now what sort

  1434. of works will

  1435. develop in our

  1436. lives

  1437. if we're genuinely

  1438. embracing God's

  1439. promises from our

  1440. hearts

  1441. well think about

  1442. the week ahead

  1443. the week of

  1444. prayer

  1445. to someone who

  1446. doesn't believe

  1447. isn't prayer the

  1448. most pointless

  1449. thing

  1450. I had a great

  1451. story a while

  1452. ago about a

  1453. friend who was

  1454. a vicar

  1455. and he was at

  1456. his desk in

  1457. his study

  1458. praying

  1459. and the

  1460. window cleaner

  1461. knocked on

  1462. the window

  1463. and said

  1464. look mate

  1465. you're not

  1466. doing anything

  1467. come give me

  1468. a hand for

  1469. a moment

  1470. he said

  1471. no I am

  1472. doing it

  1473. I'm praying

  1474. this is the

  1475. work

  1476. but naturally

  1477. we think

  1478. well the

  1479. window cleaner

  1480. don't we

  1481. praying is

  1482. pointless

  1483. you're just

  1484. doing nothing

  1485. here's how

  1486. our faith

  1487. can lead to

  1488. action this

  1489. week

  1490. we make

  1491. time to

  1492. pray

  1493. to join

  1494. with others

  1495. in prayer

  1496. what about

  1497. where we put

  1498. our money

  1499. and our time

  1500. see natural

  1501. human logic

  1502. would say

  1503. we put

  1504. money

  1505. we got

  1506. spare money

  1507. we invest

  1508. it in good

  1509. savings

  1510. and good

  1511. pension plans

  1512. and it's not

  1513. bad to do

  1514. that

  1515. it's not wrong

  1516. to do that

  1517. but faith

  1518. embraces God's

  1519. promises wholeheartedly

  1520. remembers what

  1521. Jesus says

  1522. about treasures

  1523. on earth

  1524. where moth

  1525. and rust

  1526. destroy

  1527. there are

  1528. treasures in

  1529. heaven

  1530. where thieves

  1531. do not

  1532. break in

  1533. and steal

  1534. and moth

  1535. and rust

  1536. do not

  1537. destroy

  1538. and so

  1539. we see

  1540. with the eyes

  1541. of faith

  1542. we invest

  1543. in what will

  1544. last forever

  1545. don't we

  1546. we invest

  1547. in gospel

  1548. work

  1549. we invest

  1550. in a building

  1551. project

  1552. we might help

  1553. the gospel

  1554. be proclaimed

  1555. for generations

  1556. to come here

  1557. we invest

  1558. in God's

  1559. family around

  1560. the world

  1561. or another

  1562. example of what

  1563. faith

  1564. embracing God's

  1565. promises

  1566. from a half

  1567. means

  1568. is the

  1569. illustration

  1570. James uses

  1571. here

  1572. these rich

  1573. men in

  1574. James'

  1575. congregation

  1576. saying

  1577. go in peace

  1578. be warm

  1579. and filled

  1580. weren't really

  1581. embracing God's

  1582. promises

  1583. they weren't

  1584. seeing the

  1585. poor and

  1586. needy among

  1587. them

  1588. as those

  1589. to whom

  1590. they were

  1591. joined in

  1592. Christ

  1593. they're

  1594. brothers and

  1595. sisters

  1596. as they're

  1597. being selfish

  1598. rather than

  1599. giving it

  1600. practically

  1601. helping

  1602. those in

  1603. God's

  1604. family who

  1605. needed it

  1606. I'm sure

  1607. we can all

  1608. think of

  1609. more examples

  1610. for our

  1611. own lives

  1612. and what

  1613. would it

  1614. look like

  1615. when we

  1616. embrace God's

  1617. promises

  1618. wholeheartedly

  1619. James is

  1620. really putting

  1621. a question to

  1622. us all here

  1623. whose friend

  1624. are you

  1625. whose friend

  1626. do you want

  1627. to be

  1628. Abraham had

  1629. genuine faith

  1630. it was active

  1631. it matured

  1632. through use

  1633. resulted

  1634. finally in

  1635. justification

  1636. of being

  1637. God's

  1638. friend

  1639. but later

  1640. on he gives

  1641. the warning

  1642. I've already

  1643. quoted it

  1644. chapter 4

  1645. verse 4

  1646. that these

  1647. people

  1648. James is

  1649. writing to

  1650. were so

  1651. double minded

  1652. they were

  1653. really friends

  1654. with the

  1655. world

  1656. you are

  1657. doffrous

  1658. people

  1659. do you not

  1660. know that

  1661. friendship with

  1662. the world

  1663. is enmity

  1664. with God

  1665. therefore

  1666. whoever wishes

  1667. to be a

  1668. friend of the

  1669. world

  1670. makes himself

  1671. an enemy

  1672. of God

  1673. so their

  1674. friendship with

  1675. the world

  1676. was seen

  1677. with their

  1678. preoccupation

  1679. with status

  1680. with wealth

  1681. with their

  1682. own plans

  1683. with ease

  1684. not with

  1685. God's ways

  1686. so James

  1687. is asking

  1688. them and

  1689. asking us

  1690. whose friend

  1691. do you want

  1692. to be

  1693. to my

  1694. friend Gavin

  1695. was unsettled

  1696. by James

  1697. words

  1698. confused even

  1699. maybe many

  1700. of us here

  1701. are tonight

  1702. well let me

  1703. be clear

  1704. let me be

  1705. clear what

  1706. James says

  1707. James is not

  1708. saying good

  1709. works can

  1710. save us

  1711. they cannot

  1712. James has

  1713. already told us

  1714. back in chapter

  1715. 1 verse 21

  1716. what can

  1717. save us

  1718. therefore put

  1719. away all

  1720. filthiness

  1721. and rampant

  1722. wickedness

  1723. and receive

  1724. with meekness

  1725. the implanted

  1726. word which

  1727. is able to

  1728. save your

  1729. souls

  1730. only coming

  1731. to Christ

  1732. in need

  1733. accepting the

  1734. gospel message

  1735. of salvation

  1736. through Christ

  1737. alone

  1738. of his death

  1739. on the cross

  1740. to pay for

  1741. our sins

  1742. his resurrection

  1743. guaranteeing

  1744. us new life

  1745. that is the

  1746. only way

  1747. to be saved

  1748. saving faith

  1749. is never

  1750. alone

  1751. because God

  1752. makes us

  1753. new people

  1754. so can I

  1755. ask you

  1756. what is your

  1757. confidence in

  1758. is it in

  1759. your theology

  1760. is it the

  1761. fact you

  1762. prayed a prayer

  1763. once

  1764. or your

  1765. baptism

  1766. James tells us

  1767. true faith

  1768. is not a

  1769. matter of

  1770. mere words

  1771. not a matter

  1772. of mere

  1773. intellectual

  1774. ascent

  1775. but wholeheartedly

  1776. embracing

  1777. God's promises

  1778. maybe some

  1779. people here

  1780. feel

  1781. I'm confident

  1782. because I'm

  1783. a nice person

  1784. I do good

  1785. things

  1786. please be clear

  1787. James does not

  1788. say good works

  1789. will save you

  1790. only faith

  1791. will save you

  1792. and that faith

  1793. is shown

  1794. perhaps some

  1795. of us here

  1796. like Gavin

  1797. my friend

  1798. Gavin

  1799. are concerned

  1800. how did I

  1801. answer

  1802. how would you

  1803. answer someone

  1804. a friend

  1805. who texted

  1806. you like

  1807. Gavin

  1808. texted me

  1809. am I alright

  1810. let me tell you

  1811. how I answered

  1812. him

  1813. I pointed

  1814. out to him

  1815. the change

  1816. in his character

  1817. I'd seen

  1818. over the years

  1819. I pointed

  1820. out his

  1821. humility

  1822. I pointed

  1823. out his

  1824. desire for

  1825. godliness

  1826. I pointed

  1827. out his

  1828. sacrificial

  1829. service to

  1830. many

  1831. the warm

  1832. hospitality

  1833. he and his

  1834. family offer

  1835. I was able

  1836. to point to

  1837. his works

  1838. as evidence

  1839. of God's

  1840. work in his

  1841. life

  1842. the genuine

  1843. nature of

  1844. his faith

  1845. embracing

  1846. God's promises

  1847. and of course

  1848. I pointed

  1849. him to our

  1850. faithful saviour

  1851. Jesus Christ

  1852. pointed him

  1853. to his

  1854. perfect life

  1855. his perfect

  1856. obedience

  1857. his death

  1858. on the cross

  1859. to pay for

  1860. our sins

  1861. his gift

  1862. of the holy

  1863. spirit

  1864. to all

  1865. he turned

  1866. to him

  1867. to change

  1868. us

  1869. see all of us

  1870. who claim to

  1871. trust Christ

  1872. need to go

  1873. back

  1874. need to look

  1875. at our lives

  1876. but most

  1877. importantly

  1878. look at our

  1879. saviour

  1880. and come to

  1881. him again

  1882. and again

  1883. we shouldn't

  1884. be complacent

  1885. but we

  1886. shouldn't be

  1887. concerned

  1888. we should

  1889. put our

  1890. confidence

  1891. in Christ

  1892. bolstered

  1893. by the

  1894. evidence

  1895. of his

  1896. word

  1897. in our

  1898. lives

  1899. let me

  1900. close this

  1901. line from

  1902. Matthew

  1903. Henry

  1904. the

  1905. puristy

  1906. commentator

  1907. he said

  1908. this on

  1909. this passage

  1910. true

  1911. true

  1912. believing

  1913. is not

  1914. an act

  1915. of understanding

  1916. but a

  1917. work of

  1918. the whole

  1919. heart

  1920. to have

  1921. to deny

  1922. his own

  1923. reason

  1924. affections

  1925. and interests

  1926. is an

  1927. action fit

  1928. to try

  1929. a believer

  1930. there is

  1931. no middle

  1932. state

  1933. everyone

  1934. must either

  1935. live as

  1936. God's

  1937. friend

  1938. or God's

  1939. enemy

  1940. let's pray
