  1. And turn to Luke chapter 15.

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  2. Luke chapter 15.

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  3. And so,

  4. I'm trying to preach

  5. Christianity is Jesus Christ.

  6. You'll be thankful,

  7. I hope to know that Christianity

  8. is not a set of rules

  9. or a philosophy.

  10. You should never confuse Christianity

  11. with the institutional church.

  12. Christianity is the person

  13. of Jesus Christ.

  14. And when we open this passage

  15. this evening,

  16. we find that the person of Jesus,

  17. Jesus is in trouble again, isn't he?

  18. One of the extraordinary things

  19. that you find about the adult life

  20. of Jesus

  21. is that he's nearly always in trouble.

  22. He's in trouble with his family.

  23. He seems to be always in trouble

  24. with the local clergy.

  25. He's in trouble with his followers

  26. at times.

  27. But by far the most deep resentment

  28. and hostility

  29. towards Jesus

  30. comes from those who are

  31. seriously religious.

  32. There are some exceptions

  33. to that.

  34. But you can almost

  35. describe the gospel

  36. as a sliding scale.

  37. In a sliding scale

  38. where the more we move

  39. to religious observance,

  40. the more opposition

  41. there is to Jesus.

  42. I think you see that.

  43. Because Jesus kept doing things,

  44. he kept saying things,

  45. that just didn't sit comfortably

  46. with the religious observance

  47. of his day.

  48. Of the Pharisees.

  49. And what annoyed them

  50. so much

  51. was not that Jesus spoke

  52. as though he was God

  53. in the flesh,

  54. nor that he did

  55. mighty miracles

  56. without their permission.

  57. That was bad enough.

  58. The problem was

  59. he did these things

  60. at the wrong times,

  61. in the wrong place,

  62. with the wrong people.

  63. So he cast out demons

  64. in the middle of a church service.

  65. It's something that's very,

  66. very un-Presbyterian,

  67. isn't it?

  68. He healed people

  69. on the Sabbath.

  70. A day of no work.

  71. And Jesus did work

  72. according to them.

  73. Not just once or twice

  74. so that it could be overlooked.

  75. But repeatedly,

  76. as if he was making a point

  77. which he was.

  78. He reached out

  79. and touched lepers,

  80. the untouchable.

  81. But worst of all,

  82. he seemed to spend

  83. an inordinate amount of time

  84. with the wrong people.

  85. And that is where

  86. we pick up the story.

  87. Verse 2.

  88. Chapter 15, verse 2.

  89. And the Pharisees of the skies

  90. grumbled,

  91. saying,

  92. This man received sinners

  93. and eats for them.

  94. Now we have to say

  95. that we tax collectors

  96. and sinners,

  97. tax collectors

  98. have never been rehabilitated.

  99. In every culture,

  100. tax collectors

  101. remain the same,

  102. disliked.

  103. Tax collectors

  104. and sinners

  105. were all drawing the item.

  106. If you work

  107. for the Inland Revenue,

  108. I'm sorry.

  109. It's an unfair shot.

  110. You can get me back

  111. at the end of the year,

  112. I suppose.

  113. Now, let's go back

  114. to the passage.

  115. The tax collectors

  116. and sinners,

  117. can you see it?

  118. They are drawing near

  119. to him.

  120. Verse 1.

  121. But the Pharisees

  122. and the scribes

  123. murmured,

  124. they grumbled,

  125. saying,

  126. This man received sinners

  127. and eats with them.

  128. So the problem

  129. for the clergy

  130. was not just that

  131. Jesus was spending time

  132. with these people,

  133. he seems to like them.

  134. And what galled them

  135. was that Jesus

  136. wasn't treating them,

  137. wasn't treating

  138. the kind of religious people

  139. with the dignity

  140. they felt

  141. they obviously deserved.

  142. He wasn't observing

  143. the usual distinctions

  144. that there were

  145. that had become

  146. so important.

  147. He seemed

  148. to accept

  149. and love people

  150. irrespective

  151. of their background

  152. and irrespective

  153. of their future potential.

  154. So they did

  155. what all religious people

  156. do

  157. when confronted

  158. with something

  159. that they don't like.

  160. Can you see it?

  161. In verse 2.

  162. What do all religious

  163. people do

  164. when they're confronted

  165. by something

  166. that they don't like?

  167. They grumble.

  168. They murmur.

  169. You've just got to spend

  170. about six months

  171. in any church

  172. to find that out.

  173. But the truth is,

  174. Jesus does not feel

  175. comfortable

  176. with one kind of person

  177. or with one class

  178. of person

  179. or another.

  180. The problem is

  181. all those

  182. well-practiced

  183. distinctions

  184. that make our city

  185. go round,

  186. they are just

  187. irrelevant to him.

  188. Or more accurately,

  189. they are a hindrance

  190. to his true purpose.

  191. All those things

  192. that maybe we

  193. have carefully crafted

  194. our own identity,

  195. our capacity

  196. of what we can do,

  197. our little cliques,

  198. our core competencies,

  199. Jesus sees through them

  200. and he sees the real

  201. you and me.

  202. The failure of the Pharisees

  203. is not a moral failure,

  204. it's not a religious failure,

  205. it is a failure

  206. to completely understand

  207. what Jesus is there to do.

  208. It's a failure to understand

  209. his life and his ministry.

  210. And that is why

  211. this parable is so important.

  212. Because in this

  213. short story,

  214. Jesus takes us

  215. right to the heart

  216. for the reason

  217. that he came into the world.

  218. for why he dies

  219. on the cross

  220. and why he rises again.

  221. And I don't think

  222. in Luke's gospel particularly

  223. there are any words

  224. that describe so simply

  225. and so movingly

  226. when you meditate on them

  227. his own understanding

  228. of what he's doing.

  229. So the parable

  230. has got two parts.

  231. The first part

  232. is in verses 4 and 5

  233. which speak of

  234. the joy of rescue.

  235. Is that verse 5?

  236. Verse 4.

  237. What man of you,

  238. which one of you,

  239. having a hundred sheep,

  240. if he's lost one of them,

  241. does not leave the 99

  242. in the open country

  243. and go after the one

  244. that is lost

  245. until he finds it.

  246. And when he's found it,

  247. he lays it on his shoulders

  248. rejoicing.

  249. It's a very simple story,

  250. isn't it?

  251. It's a very simple story

  252. of search and rescue.

  253. But it's no ordinary rescue.

  254. It's a sheep

  255. that's gone missing.

  256. And every person

  257. in Jesus' audience

  258. knows that when

  259. a sheep goes missing,

  260. that sheep

  261. is not going to find

  262. its own way home

  263. by itself.

  264. Unlike Mary's little lamb.

  265. It will not find

  266. its own way home

  267. unless the shepherd

  268. goes out.

  269. You know that,

  270. don't you?

  271. That sheep,

  272. when it leaves the flock

  273. and goes out on its own,

  274. if nobody goes to get it,

  275. it will very quickly

  276. become somebody's dinner.

  277. For anyone

  278. of a number

  279. of hungry predators.

  280. And this immediately

  281. has a jarring note,

  282. doesn't it,

  283. for Jesus' listeners.

  284. Why?

  285. Because they knew

  286. the Old Testament.

  287. And they knew

  288. that the Lord's my shepherd.

  289. They knew that God

  290. is the shepherd.

  291. They knew that the Lord

  292. is my shepherd

  293. more times than we ever will.

  294. But for them,

  295. when they said

  296. the Lord is my shepherd,

  297. it was a great source

  298. of pride.

  299. It comes to complete

  300. shock to them

  301. to think that

  302. Jesus thinks

  303. that they may have

  304. gone astray.

  305. Let alone be lost.

  306. And what Jesus is doing

  307. is saying,

  308. all that you know

  309. of the God

  310. of the Old Testament,

  311. that is true of me.

  312. I have come

  313. from God,

  314. from heaven,

  315. into this world.

  316. To rescue

  317. men and women,

  318. boys and girls

  319. who are lost.

  320. The reason behind

  321. my miracles,

  322. the reason behind

  323. my teaching,

  324. the reason I'm

  325. speaking to you

  326. is because God

  327. is searching you

  328. to bring you

  329. back to himself.

  330. You see,

  331. God is not a

  332. detached observer,

  333. is he?

  334. Watching from a distance.

  335. He doesn't wait

  336. to be asked

  337. before he begins

  338. caring for us.

  339. And the proof

  340. of that is where?

  341. It is in the life

  342. and the death

  343. and the resurrection

  344. of Jesus.

  345. And you can tell

  346. how seriously

  347. God takes our lostness

  348. by the fact

  349. that he sends

  350. Jesus to live

  351. and die for us.

  352. He must think

  353. that we are

  354. in serious danger.

  355. We use this idea,

  356. don't we,

  357. of being lost

  358. in a host

  359. of different ways.

  360. It's possible

  361. to go to an art gallery,

  362. isn't it,

  363. and get lost

  364. in all the beauty.

  365. But that is not

  366. what Jesus means here.

  367. It's possible

  368. to read a really

  369. great book

  370. and get lost

  371. in the book

  372. for an afternoon.

  373. But that's not

  374. what Jesus means here.

  375. It's possible

  376. to take a walk

  377. in the beauty

  378. of the countryside

  379. and be lost

  380. in the beauty

  381. of creation.

  382. But that is not

  383. what he means

  384. by lost here.

  385. No, Jesus seems

  386. to think

  387. our lostness

  388. demands rescue.

  389. And we are

  390. very familiar

  391. with people

  392. being rescued.

  393. So do you remember

  394. earlier a few weeks ago

  395. the explorer

  396. Henry Worsley

  397. died

  398. in the Antarctica.

  399. He was exploring

  400. the Antarctica

  401. and he was lost.

  402. Yesterday

  403. four British rowers

  404. have been rescued

  405. after becoming stranded

  406. in the mid-Atlantic ocean

  407. for more than 16 hours

  408. when their boat

  409. capsized.

  410. What they were doing there,

  411. I don't know,

  412. in the middle

  413. of the Atlantic ocean

  414. but they were there.

  415. On Tuesday,

  416. you might have seen

  417. the video,

  418. a mother and her toddler

  419. drove their car

  420. into an Amsterdam canal.

  421. I don't know

  422. if you've seen the video

  423. have you seen it?

  424. And bypassers

  425. amazingly

  426. dived into the canal.

  427. I don't know

  428. if they're cleaner

  429. than the Brent

  430. but they dived

  431. into the canal

  432. and rescued

  433. the mother

  434. and her toddler.

  435. Now if the four

  436. British rowers

  437. had not been rescued

  438. they would have been

  439. lost.

  440. If the passers-by

  441. had not jumped

  442. into the canal

  443. in Amsterdam

  444. the mother and toddler

  445. would have been

  446. lost.

  447. Unless someone

  448. rescued them

  449. they would perish.

  450. That's what Jesus

  451. is talking about here.

  452. That's the point.

  453. This is what Jesus

  454. has come to do.

  455. But unless somebody

  456. goes after the sheep

  457. the sheep perishes.

  458. This is what

  459. he's come to do.

  460. He's come to do for us

  461. what we cannot do

  462. for ourselves

  463. to search for us

  464. and to find us

  465. and to bring us

  466. home to God.

  467. So when you look

  468. at the life

  469. and the death

  470. of Jesus Christ

  471. you see the love

  472. of God in action.

  473. I don't know

  474. if you've ever

  475. really thought

  476. of what a remarkable

  477. thing it is.

  478. That God should

  479. send his son

  480. to the world

  481. to seek for you

  482. and for me.

  483. That everything

  484. Jesus went through

  485. is because we have

  486. cut ourselves off

  487. from God.

  488. And it is not

  489. God who is lost.

  490. Jesus is like

  491. a shepherd

  492. searching,

  493. searching,

  494. searching

  495. because he knows

  496. if he doesn't

  497. find the sheep

  498. the sheep

  499. will perish.

  500. I'm not sure

  501. why you came to

  502. church this morning

  503. maybe just

  504. this evening

  505. maybe just have it.

  506. But ultimately

  507. spiritually speaking

  508. the reason you came

  509. to church this evening

  510. is because God

  511. is diligently

  512. searching for you.

  513. The fact that

  514. you are here

  515. means that God

  516. is drawing you

  517. to himself.

  518. The difficulty

  519. is like the

  520. Pharisees.

  521. We spend so much

  522. time pretending

  523. that actually

  524. we're not lost.

  525. It's so easy

  526. today to grow

  527. comfortable with

  528. our lostness.

  529. Our food is fast

  530. and plentiful.

  531. Our homes are

  532. comfortable and

  533. very expensive.

  534. We have gadgets

  535. to simplify and

  536. simultaneously

  537. complicate our

  538. lives.

  539. We have medicine

  540. to prolong our

  541. lives.

  542. And entertainment

  543. to dull any

  544. vestige of

  545. hunger for God

  546. and longing

  547. for him.

  548. But I think

  549. one of the

  550. marks of our

  551. lostness is

  552. this kind of

  553. spiritual

  554. drifting in

  555. our culture.

  556. Douglas

  557. Copeland

  558. speaks of a

  559. generation that

  560. has grown up

  561. that has no

  562. use and no

  563. time for God

  564. that moves

  565. between active

  566. consuming and

  567. compulsive

  568. television watching

  569. and apathy.

  570. Life is lived

  571. between the

  572. demands of our

  573. advertising and

  574. our urges.

  575. And I think

  576. there's many

  577. people who feel

  578. that.

  579. Many of your

  580. friends and

  581. work colleagues

  582. and neighbours

  583. many people who

  584. feel this profound

  585. sense of

  586. disconnectedness with

  587. God that life is

  588. not what it was

  589. meant to be.

  590. They were made

  591. for something

  592. greater.

  593. We've got no

  594. responsibilities,

  595. no commitments,

  596. no purpose,

  597. but no hope.

  598. We're free to

  599. think not too

  600. hard about

  601. anything in

  602. particular and

  603. we emulate the

  604. morality of

  605. whatever the

  606. latest movie

  607. film is.

  608. A generation of

  609. young people have

  610. grown up where

  611. death is funny

  612. and nothing is

  613. important.

  614. I read this

  615. week from one

  616. writer who

  617. listened to this

  618. that says this,

  619. we are told that

  620. we can be anything

  621. we want to be

  622. but we have no

  623. particular reason to

  624. be anything in

  625. particular.

  626. Isn't that

  627. brilliant?

  628. We are told that

  629. we can be anything

  630. we want to be

  631. but we have no

  632. particular reason to

  633. be anything in

  634. particular.

  635. And so our

  636. friends, our

  637. colleagues, our

  638. neighbours, maybe

  639. our families drift

  640. from one peak

  641. experience to the

  642. next with that

  643. defensive anthem

  644. I'm not hurting

  645. anyone.

  646. And we've

  647. developed, haven't

  648. we, as a

  649. culture, lots

  650. of clever little

  651. mechanisms to

  652. deal with our

  653. lostness.

  654. So one of the

  655. ways that people

  656. do that is they

  657. kind of draw

  658. themselves a new

  659. map.

  660. They configure

  661. reality with

  662. themselves at the

  663. centre of it.

  664. I know my map

  665. tells me I'm not

  666. lost.

  667. One of the

  668. maps is

  669. spirituality,

  670. people have that,

  671. don't they?

  672. where I

  673. alleviate my

  674. lostness by

  675. going through a

  676. number of

  677. spiritual exercise

  678. which are

  679. basically designed

  680. to make me feel

  681. better about

  682. myself.

  683. Instead of

  684. acknowledging I

  685. am lost.

  686. And I need to

  687. be rescued by

  688. the shepherd.

  689. I devote

  690. myself to

  691. different spiritual

  692. activities.

  693. I think it's

  694. more difficult,

  695. isn't it?

  696. It seems to me

  697. to be more

  698. difficult in

  699. talking to those

  700. people who

  701. think of

  702. themselves as

  703. spiritual to

  704. come to terms

  705. with the fact

  706. with what Jesus

  707. says here that

  708. we are lost.

  709. Another map,

  710. let me call it

  711. is self.

  712. What we do

  713. here is we

  714. make the goal

  715. of human life

  716. for me.

  717. And I

  718. myself, I

  719. am the

  720. ultimate object

  721. of allegiance.

  722. And when that

  723. happens,

  724. when we put

  725. ourselves right

  726. at the center,

  727. my deep longing

  728. for God that

  729. every human

  730. being has,

  731. is replaced

  732. with a desire

  733. for my emotional

  734. well-being.

  735. Sin becomes

  736. addiction.

  737. My longing

  738. for God

  739. becomes pathology.

  740. And I become

  741. anethetized.

  742. My senses are

  743. dull to the

  744. very things

  745. that I need

  746. to listen to.

  747. And I become

  748. a little lost

  749. sheep who's

  750. being retooled

  751. emotionally to

  752. deal with my

  753. anxiety.

  754. And I think

  755. that's why the

  756. words of Jesus

  757. tonight are so

  758. important for us.

  759. In Jesus'

  760. mind, we are

  761. all sheep.

  762. And we have

  763. erred and

  764. strayed from

  765. his ways like

  766. lost sheep.

  767. And we've put

  768. a distance between

  769. ourselves and

  770. God and we

  771. are lost.

  772. And that is why

  773. he says he is

  774. calm.

  775. And what does

  776. he do when he

  777. finds the

  778. sheep?

  779. I'm told

  780. often that when

  781. people find

  782. lost sheep,

  783. the sheep

  784. refuses to

  785. budge.

  786. You've seen

  787. that in me

  788. with the

  789. sheep on

  790. the edge

  791. of the

  792. cliff.

  793. And it

  794. just refuses

  795. to move.

  796. And the

  797. sheep clings

  798. for whatever

  799. it's stuck

  800. in.

  801. So what

  802. does Jesus

  803. do when

  804. he finds

  805. us?

  806. Verse 5,

  807. can you

  808. see that?

  809. He lays

  810. us on

  811. his shoulders

  812. rejoicing.

  813. The shepherd

  814. has gone to

  815. great risk

  816. to find

  817. this wayward

  818. sheep.

  819. You see,

  820. God doesn't

  821. look at us

  822. and say,

  823. here's a

  824. self-help

  825. manual.

  826. Help

  827. yourself.

  828. He comes

  829. to us

  830. and he

  831. finds us

  832. where we

  833. are.

  834. And when

  835. he finds

  836. us,

  837. that is

  838. not the

  839. end of

  840. it.

  841. He picks

  842. us up

  843. and he

  844. puts us

  845. on his

  846. shoulders

  847. and he

  848. takes us

  849. back home

  850. rejoicing.

  851. Rejoicing.

  852. And Jesus

  853. carries us

  854. on his

  855. shoulders

  856. the entire

  857. distance

  858. back to

  859. the fold.

  860. In other

  861. words,

  862. the measure

  863. of Jesus'

  864. burden

  865. is the

  866. exact measure

  867. of our

  868. lostness.

  869. Can you

  870. see that?

  871. The measure

  872. of Jesus'

  873. burden is

  874. the exact

  875. measure of

  876. our lostness.

  877. He carries

  878. us back to

  879. God the

  880. distance we

  881. have strayed.

  882. His shoulders

  883. bear the

  884. burden of

  885. our guilt,

  886. all of it.

  887. And you

  888. will know that

  889. if you read

  890. this gospel to

  891. the end,

  892. what it cost

  893. Jesus to

  894. bear us

  895. and to

  896. bear us

  897. and we

  898. are told

  899. that as

  900. he was

  901. nailed to

  902. the cross

  903. he

  904. shouldered

  905. our sin,

  906. he shouldered

  907. our guilt.

  908. All that

  909. we've done

  910. to push

  911. God away

  912. Jesus

  913. shouldered.

  914. It is by

  915. his death

  916. we are

  917. rescued,

  918. it is by

  919. his death

  920. that we're

  921. forgiven,

  922. it is by

  923. his death

  924. that we're

  925. brought home

  926. to God.

  927. And yet

  928. the most

  929. remarkable

  930. thing about

  931. these words

  932. is that

  933. he tells

  934. us that

  935. he does

  936. it for

  937. joy.

  938. Do you see

  939. that he

  940. puts it

  941. on his

  942. shoulders

  943. rejoicing.

  944. Jesus

  945. knew what

  946. it would

  947. cost him

  948. to rescue

  949. the lost

  950. sheep,

  951. but for

  952. him it's

  953. the opposite

  954. of dull

  955. and tedious,

  956. it brings

  957. joy and

  958. rejoicing.

  959. Yes he

  960. knows,

  961. there's going

  962. to be

  963. the agony

  964. of the

  965. cross,

  966. but he

  967. knows that

  968. through that

  969. agony of

  970. the cross

  971. he will

  972. bring delight

  973. to God

  974. and delight

  975. to him

  976. by saving

  977. us from

  978. being lost

  979. forever.

  980. So let me

  981. speak to us

  982. who are

  983. regulars.

  984. I want

  985. to ask

  986. you,

  987. does it

  988. bring you

  989. joy and

  990. delight when

  991. you see

  992. someone who

  993. is moving

  994. from being

  995. lost to

  996. being found?

  997. And are

  998. there people

  999. who you

  1000. know who

  1001. are wandering,

  1002. who have

  1003. maybe not

  1004. been in

  1005. church for

  1006. a few

  1007. weeks,

  1008. and actually

  1009. they are

  1010. drifting away.

  1011. They're not

  1012. following through

  1013. on their

  1014. spiritual

  1015. commitments.

  1016. And if

  1017. you are

  1018. following

  1019. Jesus,

  1020. I want

  1021. to encourage

  1022. you to

  1023. go after

  1024. them in

  1025. English

  1026. way,

  1027. and to

  1028. get them,

  1029. and to

  1030. bring them

  1031. back,

  1032. not because

  1033. of the joy

  1034. it's going

  1035. to bring

  1036. you,

  1037. though it

  1038. will

  1039. bring you

  1040. joy,

  1041. won't

  1042. it?

  1043. No,

  1044. for the joy

  1045. it will

  1046. bring them,

  1047. but for the

  1048. joy it will

  1049. bring God.

  1050. This is the

  1051. point,

  1052. there is joy

  1053. in heaven

  1054. because God

  1055. delights in

  1056. every single

  1057. one of his

  1058. people.

  1059. He doesn't

  1060. want to see

  1061. any one of

  1062. us lost.

  1063. God sent

  1064. his son to

  1065. rescue us,

  1066. and even

  1067. though it

  1068. cost him

  1069. his life,

  1070. Jesus loves

  1071. to do the

  1072. will of the

  1073. father.

  1074. That's the

  1075. joy of the

  1076. rescue.

  1077. Secondly,

  1078. more briefly,

  1079. there's the

  1080. joy of

  1081. restoration.

  1082. Can you

  1083. look with

  1084. me at

  1085. verse 6

  1086. and 7?

  1087. And when

  1088. he comes

  1089. home,

  1090. he calls

  1091. together his

  1092. friends and

  1093. his neighbours

  1094. saying to

  1095. them,

  1096. rejoice with

  1097. me,

  1098. for I

  1099. found my

  1100. sheep that

  1101. was lost.

  1102. Just so,

  1103. I tell you,

  1104. there will be

  1105. more joy in

  1106. heaven over

  1107. one sinner

  1108. who repents

  1109. than over

  1110. ninety-nine

  1111. righteous

  1112. persons who

  1113. need no

  1114. repentance,

  1115. or ninety-nine

  1116. people who

  1117. think they

  1118. don't need

  1119. repentance.

  1120. Here's another

  1121. side of being

  1122. rescued.

  1123. We've done

  1124. nothing to

  1125. force God's

  1126. hand to

  1127. search for

  1128. us,

  1129. except by

  1130. becoming

  1131. lost.

  1132. And God

  1133. sends his

  1134. son to

  1135. search for

  1136. us,

  1137. but when

  1138. he finds

  1139. us,

  1140. he doesn't

  1141. drag us

  1142. back against

  1143. our will.

  1144. To be

  1145. brought back

  1146. to God

  1147. means to

  1148. repent of

  1149. our sin.

  1150. It means

  1151. to give up

  1152. our self-made

  1153. maps.

  1154. It means

  1155. to surrender

  1156. to Jesus

  1157. Christ.

  1158. It means

  1159. despite my

  1160. abilities and

  1161. capabilities and

  1162. earnings I

  1163. have lost,

  1164. it is what

  1165. the Bible

  1166. means by

  1167. sin.

  1168. It means

  1169. to give up

  1170. our self-made

  1171. maps.

  1172. I met an

  1173. American

  1174. minister at

  1175. lunch this

  1176. week in

  1177. Covent Garden

  1178. and I was

  1179. supposed to

  1180. pick the

  1181. restaurant,

  1182. we were

  1183. going to go

  1184. to Five

  1185. Guys,

  1186. the burger

  1187. place.

  1188. And anyway,

  1189. after about

  1190. ten minutes

  1191. of walking

  1192. around

  1193. Covent Garden,

  1194. the American

  1195. man said to

  1196. me,

  1197. you don't

  1198. know where

  1199. you're going,

  1200. do you?

  1201. And I

  1202. said,

  1203. no.

  1204. And I

  1205. said,

  1206. he said,

  1207. well do you

  1208. think we

  1209. should look?

  1210. I said,

  1211. I'm sure it's

  1212. around here.

  1213. So we

  1214. walked on

  1215. another five

  1216. to ten

  1217. minutes and

  1218. then he

  1219. got Google

  1220. Earth or

  1221. whatever it

  1222. is,

  1223. Google Maps.

  1224. You've

  1225. got to give

  1226. up that at

  1227. some point.

  1228. I have to

  1229. say,

  1230. listen,

  1231. I don't

  1232. know what I

  1233. am.

  1234. I don't

  1235. know any

  1236. Covent Garden

  1237. any better

  1238. than you do

  1239. when you're

  1240. from Michigan.

  1241. We could have

  1242. walked for

  1243. hours and I

  1244. wouldn't have

  1245. found it.

  1246. You've got to

  1247. give up the

  1248. self-made

  1249. map.

  1250. And that's

  1251. what you've

  1252. got to do

  1253. if you will

  1254. come to

  1255. Christ.

  1256. Despite

  1257. your abilities

  1258. and your

  1259. capacities and

  1260. earnings,

  1261. you are

  1262. lost.

  1263. That's what

  1264. the Bible

  1265. means by

  1266. sin.

  1267. And our

  1268. problem is

  1269. that the

  1270. only place

  1271. we see

  1272. sin is

  1273. on a

  1274. kind of

  1275. deserted

  1276. man.

  1277. But in

  1278. the Bible

  1279. sin is not

  1280. so much a

  1281. moral issue

  1282. as a

  1283. spiritual

  1284. issue.

  1285. It is not

  1286. so much the

  1287. breaking of

  1288. a cold

  1289. distant

  1290. law but

  1291. the

  1292. breaking of

  1293. a friendship

  1294. and relationship

  1295. with God.

  1296. In all I've

  1297. done in

  1298. rebellion and

  1299. all I've

  1300. done in

  1301. disobedience to

  1302. God, it

  1303. results in

  1304. separation and

  1305. distance from

  1306. him.

  1307. That is what

  1308. it means to

  1309. be lost.

  1310. And to

  1311. repent doesn't

  1312. mean to eat

  1313. humble pie and

  1314. turn over a

  1315. new leaf and

  1316. find your way

  1317. home.

  1318. No, to

  1319. repent means to

  1320. change my

  1321. heart and to

  1322. change my

  1323. mind and to

  1324. recognise that

  1325. I have got

  1326. myself into

  1327. the mess I

  1328. am in by my

  1329. own self

  1330. conceit and

  1331. my own

  1332. self will.

  1333. And it is

  1334. not despair and

  1335. it's not

  1336. self loathing.

  1337. It's seeing

  1338. that what I've

  1339. done has

  1340. separated me

  1341. from God.

  1342. And I

  1343. thank God

  1344. that he has

  1345. come and

  1346. rescued me.

  1347. It is

  1348. allowing yourself

  1349. to be rescued.

  1350. It is letting

  1351. Jesus take you

  1352. upon his

  1353. shoulders and

  1354. bring you back

  1355. to God.

  1356. And the

  1357. great truth

  1358. tonight is

  1359. this.

  1360. It doesn't

  1361. matter how

  1362. far you've

  1363. wandered

  1364. tonight.

  1365. It doesn't

  1366. matter how

  1367. deeply entangled

  1368. you are in

  1369. the thing that

  1370. you are

  1371. entangled in

  1372. now.

  1373. If you want

  1374. to turn away

  1375. from it now

  1376. and allow

  1377. Jesus to

  1378. rescue you,

  1379. he will

  1380. bring you

  1381. home.

  1382. And when

  1383. you do,

  1384. and when

  1385. he brings

  1386. you there,

  1387. it will

  1388. bring you

  1389. great joy

  1390. in heaven.

  1391. We are

  1392. in desperate

  1393. need of

  1394. rescue.

  1395. Do you

  1396. think that

  1397. God will

  1398. have sent

  1399. his son

  1400. to die

  1401. on the

  1402. cross if

  1403. there isn't

  1404. an easier

  1405. way for him

  1406. to do it?

  1407. God cares

  1408. for us so

  1409. deeply that

  1410. even when

  1411. we've turned

  1412. our backs

  1413. on him

  1414. and wandered

  1415. and kept

  1416. wandering,

  1417. he sent

  1418. his son

  1419. to rescue

  1420. and to

  1421. shoulder us

  1422. home and

  1423. he invites

  1424. us all

  1425. to come

  1426. back in

  1427. a friendship

  1428. with him.

  1429. And you

  1430. may be

  1431. thinking,

  1432. what must

  1433. I do?

  1434. And it's

  1435. very, very

  1436. simple, isn't

  1437. it?

  1438. It is to

  1439. say, I am

  1440. lost.

  1441. It is to

  1442. say, I am

  1443. lost and I

  1444. need to be

  1445. rescued.

  1446. It is to

  1447. put your

  1448. hand out

  1449. to Christ

  1450. and say,

  1451. please rescue

  1452. me.

  1453. It's as

  1454. simple as

  1455. that.

  1456. And yes,

  1457. I have

  1458. pushed God

  1459. away.

  1460. And yes,

  1461. I have

  1462. wandered a

  1463. long way

  1464. off.

  1465. And I

  1466. need to be

  1467. forgiven.

  1468. And I

  1469. need to be

  1470. brought home.

  1471. And all

  1472. you need to

  1473. do is ask

  1474. God to

  1475. bring you

  1476. back because

  1477. of what

  1478. Jesus has

  1479. done.

  1480. And you

  1481. will know

  1482. the joy of

  1483. rescue and

  1484. the joy of

  1485. restoration.

  1486. Let's pray.

  1487. Amen.
