  1. Chapter 7, which is on page 863.

  2. And really what I want us to see is the surprise in the chapter.

  3. I wonder if they've ever been surprised coming to church.

  4. ! I was talking to a man this week who said that he, I was working in the city in London.

  5. He was a Hindu, a practicing Hindu.

  6. He saw a crowd of people going into church.

  7. He went into church about lunchtime.

  8. He was there for 20 minutes.

  9. He heard somebody preach about the Lord Jesus Christ.

  10. He walked in a Hindu.

  11. And to his own surprise, and certainly his family's surprise,

  12. he walked out a Christian and a believer and a follower of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  13. There are times there, even when you've read the Bible as long as I have,

  14. you are greatly surprised.

  15. Maybe there's a surprising claim or something in the Bible

  16. that you stop and you see the surprise of it.

  17. So in Luke's Gospel, it's also familiar, isn't it?

  18. At Christmas time with the nativity scene, you have the shepherds.

  19. But it is surprising, isn't it?

  20. That the lowly, uneducated, poor, irreligious shepherds,

  21. they are the ones that are chosen to be the kind of first tellers of God made man, the incarnation.

  22. It's surprising, isn't it?

  23. At the beginning of Jesus' mind, he isn't worshipped by the scripture-saturated, church-flowing scribes.

  24. The people who know their Bible.

  25. Or any of the expected Jews in Jerusalem.

  26. But instead, he's worshipped by Gentile Magi.

  27. Milton called them star-led wizards.

  28. Who came from hundreds of miles to see him.

  29. Both of those things are surprising.

  30. They're not what you'd expect.

  31. And as you stop and think about them, they are wonderfully surprising.

  32. And they make you love the Bible more.

  33. They make you love the God of the Bible more.

  34. So that's the first place we see surprise.

  35. This kind of stop shock.

  36. But the second one I want to talk about is, well really, let's see the surprise in the passage.

  37. It's a familiar story, it looks like.

  38. The centurion, this man in charge of a hundred soldiers.

  39. And I want to show you what is so thrilling about it.

  40. If you can look at verse 9.

  41. First line is the little letters.

  42. The chapters are the big numbers.

  43. So verse 9, when Jesus heard these things, on page 863, he marveled at him.

  44. He marveled at him.

  45. He was amazed.

  46. To put it another way, Jesus was taken aback.

  47. Jesus was filled with astonishment.

  48. Jesus was shocked.

  49. Or even quite simply, Jesus was surprised.

  50. That's what it means.

  51. By what he just heard.

  52. Now what surprises Jesus?

  53. Have you thought about that?

  54. What surprises Jesus?

  55. It's one of the only places in the Gospels where Jesus is taken aback.

  56. Where he is surprised by what happens.

  57. And the answer is faith.

  58. Faith like this faith surprises him.

  59. But in verse 9 again.

  60. He marveled at him.

  61. Turned to the crowd that followed him.

  62. He said, I tell you, not even Israel have I found such faith.

  63. Now let me ask you another question.

  64. What's so amazing?

  65. What is so astonishing?

  66. What is so surprising to Jesus about this man's faith?

  67. Well, there's a few things that could be surprising.

  68. First of all, was it that he was a Roman soldier?

  69. To put it differently.

  70. This man is a Gentile.

  71. He's somebody who's not a Jew.

  72. And worse than that, from a Jewish perspective, he's a Roman.

  73. Much worse, from a Jewish zealous perspective, he's a Roman centurion.

  74. He symbolises all of Rome's authority.

  75. He has a hundred soldiers in his charge.

  76. And this man in the ancient world is a powerful man.

  77. He's wearing the wrong uniform for the Jews.

  78. He's on the wrong eye of the religious schemeer.

  79. He was a Roman enemy officer.

  80. And is that what surprises Jesus?

  81. That a man like this has faith?

  82. Well, perhaps.

  83. But actually, I'm not sure about that.

  84. I'm not sure Jesus was surprised that this Gentile had faith.

  85. He'd already encountered Gentiles, non-Jews, who'd believed in him.

  86. So he mentioned to me the Magi.

  87. Those wizards that had come from hundreds of miles away to worship him.

  88. Surely somebody would have told him that story when he was a boy.

  89. I said, perhaps.

  90. Because it wouldn't have surprised him that Gentiles, people who were non-Jews, had come to faith.

  91. Because in his Bible, in the Old Testament, it's spoken about that all the time.

  92. Hosea said, those who are not my people, I will call my people.

  93. Those who are not my beloved, I will call beloved.

  94. Isaiah, of course, he had his voice.

  95. God spoke through Isaiah and said that Gentiles would bind themselves to the Lord.

  96. And they would serve him and they would love him.

  97. They would love the name of the Lord.

  98. Isaiah spoke that God's house would be a house of prayer for all the nations.

  99. Do you remember Simeon?

  100. When Jesus was a little boy at the temple.

  101. He said, now let your servant depart in peace according to your word.

  102. For my eyes have seen your salvation.

  103. My eyes have seen your salvation.

  104. You've prepared in the sight of all the peoples.

  105. A light of revelation to the Gentiles.

  106. And glory to your people Israel.

  107. In Jesus, non-Jews like you and me would find their salvation, their rescue.

  108. And I think Jesus knew that.

  109. So I don't think he was any more surprised that this centurion has come to faith.

  110. Than the centurion we found in Acts chapter 10, certainly.

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  111. Because the Holy Spirit was opening the eyes of the Gentiles.

  112. Even mighty military men.

  113. Okay then, what surprised Jesus?

  114. Was it that this Roman soldier worked with the Jews to ask for Jesus for help?

  115. Or perhaps?

  116. Possibly isn't it?

  117. It's surprising to me.

  118. At least when I read verses 3 to 5.

  119. The centurion adhered with Jesus.

  120. And so he sent some of the elders of the Jews to him.

  121. To ask Jesus to come and help his servants.

  122. And when they come to Jesus, they plead earnestly with him.

  123. They say, this man, this centurion, deserves you to have you do this.

  124. Because this man loves our nation.

  125. He's Roman, yes.

  126. But he loves our nation.

  127. And he helped us build the synagogue.

  128. Now as you read the Gospels, you find that the Jews and the Romans working together

  129. was unheard of for something good.

  130. For something in favour of Jesus.

  131. So as we read that, it should take us a back.

  132. Are you telling me that the Roman centurion, that he called on the Jews,

  133. those prominent social and religious leaders,

  134. to see if they would go and see Jesus?

  135. And see if he would come back and be his servant?

  136. Are they friends?

  137. So if you can go through the Gospels and all that,

  138. they're not normally friends, are they?

  139. Jews do not normally like Romans,

  140. and Romans do not normally like Jews.

  141. Well, it seems like they're friends here, isn't it?

  142. And the reason they're friends is given to us in the passage.

  143. Can you look at the end of verse 5?

  144. This thing to me, he loves our nation,

  145. and he's the one who built us our synagogue.

  146. Or he helped build it.

  147. He either funded it,

  148. or he supplied people to help build it.

  149. So either he's a God-fearing,

  150. a God-fearing Gentile,

  151. that is a convert to Judaism,

  152. or at least he's somebody who's sympathetic,

  153. of those he oversees,

  154. of those whom he polices,

  155. those he guards.

  156. Well, maybe.

  157. Maybe he's both.

  158. Whatever it is, Jesus actually doesn't seem very surprised

  159. by the Jews and the Gentiles working together.

  160. So that's our question.

  161. What takes Jesus aback?

  162. Why is Jesus surprised?

  163. Was it that the Roman soldier,

  164. the Roman centurion,

  165. wanted Jesus' help on behalf of his servant?

  166. Look at verses 1 and 2.

  167. After he'd finished all his sayings,

  168. and that is the Sermon on the Plain,

  169. the little sayings of Jesus,

  170. like I love your enemies,

  171. he entered Capernaum.

  172. And now a centurion had a servant who was sick,

  173. and at the point of death,

  174. who was highly valued by him.

  175. Isn't that an interesting phrase?

  176. Highly valued.

  177. How was he highly valued?

  178. Ask that question.

  179. In which sense?

  180. The servant might have been highly valued,

  181. in that he was useful.

  182. A good servant is hard to find, I'm told.

  183. Or he might be highly valued,

  184. in that centurion loved him.

  185. Like he loved one of his own children.

  186. He probably valued him in both those ways.

  187. He was a useful servant,

  188. and he was also a servant who was more like a son to him.

  189. Now what is potentially surprising,

  190. is if we lived in the Greco-Roman world,

  191. if we lived in the world that Jesus lived,

  192. the average slave owner had very little time in regard for slaves.

  193. He treated them like animals.

  194. So in his book Ethics,

  195. the philosopher Aristotle said,

  196. there should be no friendship between inanimate things,

  197. such as a horse or an ox,

  198. or a slave.

  199. Roman writers,

  200. Zavira or Ketel,

  201. said the only difference between a slave and a beast,

  202. and a cart,

  203. was that the slave talked.

  204. Do you see the surprise?

  205. Once he put it in his historical setting,

  206. it is surprising, isn't it?

  207. But this high-powered soldier,

  208. this mighty soldier of the establishment,

  209. cared about a lonely slave.

  210. Let the slave die, acquire another one.

  211. Or at the very least,

  212. don't humiliate yourself in front of everyone,

  213. by begging to this Jesus,

  214. a man of little social consequence.

  215. But even though the centurion

  216. is asking for his servant to be healed,

  217. I don't think that surprises Jesus at all.

  218. If anyone

  219. was a high-ranking person,

  220. well, it is Jesus, isn't it?

  221. God incarnate is as high as he can,

  222. I'd argue.

  223. And yet he cared for the poor

  224. and the suffering people.

  225. I don't think Jesus is surprised by this.

  226. So what was it?

  227. What was it that surprised Jesus

  228. about this man's faith?

  229. Was it that this powerful man

  230. humbly trusted in Jesus' absolute authority?

  231. Was it that this powerful man

  232. trusted absolutely and humbly

  233. in Jesus' authority?

  234. And the answer is yes.

  235. Yes.

  236. Yes, what is so surprising

  237. is that this powerful man

  238. humbly trusted in Jesus,

  239. not just a little bit,

  240. but all of his absolute authority.

  241. Every word that the Roman centurion

  242. says in verses 6 to 9,

  243. it's important.

  244. You can have to line it.

  245. You can star it.

  246. You can mark it.

  247. You can kiss it if you want.

  248. Just listen to what he says in verse 6.

  249. And Jesus went with them.

  250. When he was not far from the house,

  251. he said to him,

  252. and said to him,

  253. Lord, do not trouble yourself,

  254. for I am not worthy to come,

  255. for you to come under my roof.

  256. Therefore I do not presume

  257. to come to you,

  258. but say the word,

  259. and let my servant be healed,

  260. for I too am a man under authority,

  261. with soldiers under me.

  262. Come and he comes,

  263. and to my servant do this,

  264. and he does it.

  265. Notice four things, okay?

  266. First notice that the centurion

  267. sent friends to Jesus

  268. to relay the message.

  269. And so the centurion at this point

  270. has never met him.

  271. The centurion has never met Jesus.

  272. He's only heard about him.

  273. He hears about Jesus

  274. earlier on in the passage,

  275. and he responds in faith.

  276. It is as if,

  277. as Paul said later on in the New Testament,

  278. faith comes by hearing.

  279. Faith comes through hearing.

  280. So do not underestimate

  281. what we're doing this morning.

  282. And what we do every Sunday,

  283. what we're doing right now,

  284. that I am preaching to you,

  285. and Lord willing,

  286. you are listening, hopefully.

  287. And that is according to the Bible,

  288. how faith gets into you.

  289. Through your ears.

  290. Ears, as you might say.

  291. So open that.

  292. The second thing to notice

  293. is the first word he says.

  294. Can you see what the first word is?

  295. What's the first word he says?

  296. What is the title he uses?

  297. He uses the title Lord.

  298. He calls Jesus Lord.

  299. The Greek word for Lord is Kyrios.

  300. And it's the same word that is found

  301. in the Greek Saturagia,

  302. the way that the Greeks

  303. would translate the Old Testament.

  304. Whenever they translated Lord God,

  305. they translated it as Lord.

  306. Now even if this Gentile

  307. is speaking better than he knows,

  308. either way,

  309. that title is significant, isn't it?

  310. It is symbolically significant.

  311. Here is a centurion

  312. who is officially under the lordship

  313. of who?

  314. Of Caesar.

  315. To the Romans.

  316. Caesar, not Jesus,

  317. is called Kyrios,

  318. called Lord.

  319. And so this title for Jesus

  320. in the Gospels,

  321. well, it's the most common way

  322. believers talk about him, isn't it?

  323. How do believers talk about Jesus?

  324. They call Jesus Lord.

  325. Unbelievers have other titles.

  326. They're respectful titles.

  327. They call him Rabbi

  328. or they call him Teacher.

  329. In Luke 7 verse 40,

    Luke 7:40

  330. the Pharisee Simon calls Jesus Teacher.

  331. Teacher is a tame title for Jesus.

  332. But the Gospels teach you

  333. that Jesus is more than a carpenter.

  334. And he's more than a teacher.

  335. He is, as the centurion put it,

  336. he is Lord.

  337. Third thing we notice

  338. is that the centurion is humble,

  339. isn't it?

  340. After it, he says,

  341. don't trouble yourself.

  342. Do not trouble yourself,

  343. for I am not worthy

  344. for you to come

  345. under my roof.

  346. Just glance at verse 4.

  347. What do the Jews say about him?

  348. Can you notice this?

  349. What's the word they use

  350. in verse 4?

  351. They say,

  352. he is worthy.

  353. He's worthy

  354. to have you come

  355. to do this for him.

  356. This guy,

  357. this Roman centurion,

  358. he really deserves you

  359. to do something for him,

  360. Jesus.

  361. But then glance

  362. at verse 7.

  363. At verse 6, I mean.

  364. Lord, do not tell me yourself,

  365. for I am not worthy.

  366. The Jews say,

  367. hey, this man is worthy,

  368. so lend him your ears.

  369. Do what he says,

  370. he is servant.

  371. But here the worthy man

  372. says to himself,

  373. I am not worthy.

  374. I love it.

  375. Jesus loves it too.

  376. Jesus eats up humility.

  377. God opposes the proud,

  378. but he gives grace

  379. for the humble.

  380. Listen, it is surprising

  381. that Jesus actually

  382. starts to walk

  383. towards this man.

  384. And he's seemingly

  385. very welcome to enter it,

  386. isn't he?

  387. Listen, I was a Gentile.

  388. Jews do not knock

  389. on Gentile doors,

  390. and they certainly

  391. don't cross the threshold

  392. of the house,

  393. because in the house

  394. there might be,

  395. well, there might not

  396. be kosher foods.

  397. They might not have

  398. had a ceremony

  399. of cleansing.

  400. It's a dangerous thing

  401. to do,

  402. and yet Jesus,

  403. he is willing to do it.

  404. But more surprising

  405. is that this military man

  406. won't even let him do it

  407. because of his own sinfulness.

  408. He sees himself

  409. as too unworthy

  410. and too beneath Jesus.

  411. And that is surprising,

  412. isn't it?

  413. Because in Luke chapter 9

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  414. and verse 58,

  415. Jesus will save himself.

  416. I've got nowhere

  417. to lay my head.

  418. I've got no roof

  419. over my head.

  420. I've got no home

  421. that I can call my own.

  422. So you see,

  423. what is so worthy

  424. about Jesus,

  425. what is so worthy

  426. about this homeless Jew,

  427. you see humility there,

  428. don't you,

  429. from the centurion.

  430. A Gentile military leader

  431. who commands

  432. a large number of soldiers,

  433. who is wealthy,

  434. who earned a nice salary

  435. as a Roman centurion,

  436. who funds a major

  437. building project

  438. for the Jews

  439. and the synagogue,

  440. who very likely

  441. as a household of slaves,

  442. he thinks that Jesus

  443. is so worthy

  444. that it's unthinkable

  445. that the Lord

  446. should enter

  447. into his house.

  448. It's interesting,

  449. it's amazing,

  450. it's surprising.

  451. So notice the hearing,

  452. through hearing alone,

  453. he has faith alone

  454. in Christ alone.

  455. Notice the word

  456. that he calls Jesus,

  457. he calls him Lord.

  458. Notice the humility

  459. and fourthly and finally,

  460. notice that this powerful man

  461. humbly trusted in Jesus,

  462. absolute authority.

  463. Listen again to verse 7 and 8.

  464. Therefore,

  465. I do not presume

  466. to come to you,

  467. but say the word

  468. and let my servant be healed.

  469. For I, too,

  470. am a man under authority

  471. with soldiers under me

  472. and I say to one girl

  473. and he goes

  474. and I say to another

  475. come and he comes.

  476. The centurion,

  477. he knows how authority works.

  478. If he told one of his soldiers

  479. to go,

  480. he went.

  481. If he told one of his soldiers

  482. to fight,

  483. he fought.

  484. If he told one of his soldiers

  485. to stand and intentionally,

  486. he did it.

  487. I had a rugby coach

  488. when I was a teenager

  489. and if he told you to stop

  490. and drop to the floor

  491. and do 20 press-ups,

  492. he did it immediately.

  493. And if he said,

  494. I do 20 star jumps,

  495. he did it.

  496. If he said,

  497. go on that line

  498. and run to that line

  499. and run back,

  500. he did it.

  501. He had absolute authority.

  502. As a parent,

  503. if I tell my children

  504. to get up,

  505. get dressed,

  506. brush their teeth,

  507. brush their hair

  508. and get ready for church,

  509. then they immediately do it.

  510. No.

  511. That's said with the rugby

  512. field children.

  513. In the gym

  514. or on the training pitch,

  515. he was a man

  516. of absolute authority.

  517. If I say jump,

  518. you say how high.

  519. Now,

  520. whatever authority

  521. illustration works for you,

  522. you use it.

  523. This man,

  524. he knew how authority worked.

  525. He was a man

  526. of authority.

  527. He was a man

  528. of great authority.

  529. There's an interesting story

  530. about King David

  531. in 2 Samuel 23.

  532. David and his men

  533. are fighting

  534. against the Philistines.

  535. They're hiding out

  536. in a cave

  537. and they're waiting there

  538. for the right time

  539. to attack

  540. the enemy army.

  541. The enemy army

  542. has made their stronghold

  543. in the city of Bethlehem

  544. in David's hometown.

  545. David,

  546. where David was born

  547. and raised.

  548. And as they were waiting

  549. for the right time

  550. to attack,

  551. David says out loud,

  552. oh,

  553. I'd love someone

  554. to get me a drink

  555. from the well

  556. that is in Bethlehem

  557. by the gates.

  558. It's like we say,

  559. I'd love a can of Coke

  560. from the shop

  561. on the corner.

  562. Now,

  563. he might have been thirsty,

  564. but actually David

  565. wasn't serious

  566. I would think

  567. in that passage.

  568. I don't think David

  569. was giving an order.

  570. I think David

  571. there is voicing

  572. a frustration,

  573. there's a military frustration,

  574. oh,

  575. I wish I could go

  576. to my hometown,

  577. to my home well

  578. and get the water

  579. that I love.

  580. Oh,

  581. I've drank all my life.

  582. But he couldn't

  583. because it was occupied

  584. by the enemy.

  585. Anyway,

  586. the interesting thing

  587. is there's a few soldiers,

  588. three of them

  589. hear what he said

  590. and they take it

  591. as a command.

  592. And off they went.

  593. It's absurd,

  594. this absurd

  595. kind of life

  596. endangered error.

  597. But somehow

  598. it's successful.

  599. We read about it,

  600. these three mighty

  601. men of David,

  602. they break through

  603. the Philistine ranks,

  604. they draw water

  605. over the well,

  606. which was by the gate,

  607. and they carry it

  608. and they bring it

  609. back to David.

  610. Mission accomplished.

  611. It's an incredible

  612. thing to do.

  613. That story's got

  614. a very odd ending,

  615. I won't give it to you,

  616. but you can read it

  617. this afternoon.

  618. But it demonstrates

  619. this,

  620. it shows you and I

  621. this,

  622. it demonstrates

  623. the supreme authority

  624. of a word

  625. spoken by God's

  626. anointed king.

  627. I'm thirsty.

  628. I want water.

  629. Your water,

  630. sir.

  631. I mean Lord.

  632. And as Christians,

  633. as those who may

  634. be reading Luke's

  635. gospel,

  636. if you have,

  637. you will know

  638. that Jesus is

  639. the son of David,

  640. who's a far

  641. greater king

  642. than David.

  643. And we know

  644. that he has

  645. all authority

  646. in heaven and earth.

  647. And we know

  648. that he spoke

  649. creation into existence.

  650. And we know

  651. that Jesus is divine,

  652. he's the second person

  653. of the Holy Trinity.

  654. But think about this,

  655. what did the

  656. centurion know?

  657. What did the

  658. centurion know

  659. about Jesus?

  660. Well actually,

  661. not very much.

  662. What he did know

  663. is that Jesus

  664. had authority.

  665. And Jesus

  666. had authority

  667. over death

  668. and disease.

  669. He didn't

  670. hear that much

  671. about it

  672. through news

  673. of Jesus'

  674. miracles.

  675. He knew

  676. that Jesus

  677. had almighty

  678. authority

  679. to do

  680. to do

  681. what the

  682. centurion

  683. was asking

  684. to do.

  685. With just

  686. one command.

  687. As I order

  688. my troops

  689. to go from

  690. here to there,

  691. I want you,

  692. Jesus,

  693. to stop death.

  694. And I believe

  695. death will

  696. stop now

  697. because you

  698. say.

  699. Now as I

  700. study this

  701. passage this week,

  702. there's a question

  703. that keeps coming

  704. up in my mind.

  705. That I thought

  706. Jesus would

  707. respond differently.

  708. I thought

  709. Jesus would

  710. respond differently.

  711. Something like,

  712. hey, Mr.

  713. Centurion,

  714. hey, Mr.

  715. Finkshot,

  716. you cannot

  717. make a

  718. theological

  719. presumption.

  720. You can't

  721. think that I

  722. work in the

  723. same way that

  724. you do in

  725. your job.

  726. You can't

  727. make a

  728. theological

  729. assumption

  730. based on

  731. your occupational

  732. experience.

  733. In other

  734. words,

  735. just because

  736. you are the

  737. people around

  738. Mr.

  739. Centurion,

  740. and they do

  741. what you say

  742. they should do,

  743. that doesn't

  744. mean how I

  745. work.

  746. That's not

  747. how my

  748. miracles

  749. work.

  750. They don't

  751. work on

  752. your

  753. terms.

  754. But of

  755. course,

  756. that's not

  757. what Jesus

  758. says yet.

  759. Aren't we

  760. glad that

  761. Jesus said

  762. Jesus are

  763. not me to

  764. save us

  765. from our

  766. sins?

  767. Because he

  768. is compassionate.

  769. I'm

  770. simply pointing

  771. out to you

  772. that Jesus

  773. is kind.

  774. He's kind,

  775. and it

  776. seems that

  777. as you

  778. read the

  779. kind of

  780. miracle

  781. stories,

  782. that everyone

  783. who comes

  784. to him in

  785. faith,

  786. they might

  787. be a little

  788. bit

  789. superstitious.

  790. They might

  791. ask for

  792. things they

  793. shouldn't

  794. ask for.

  795. They might

  796. want miracles

  797. done on

  798. their own

  799. chairs,

  800. whatever.

  801. But the

  802. point is,

  803. whoever comes

  804. to faith

  805. in Jesus,

  806. Jesus is

  807. willing to

  808. work at

  809. their level.

  810. Mustard seed

  811. faith?

  812. No problem.

  813. Big and

  814. bold faith

  815. like this?

  816. Fantastic.

  817. Just say a

  818. word,

  819. that'll work.

  820. First

  821. time tells

  822. the tale,

  823. doesn't it?

  824. It's a

  825. true story.

  826. That speaking

  827. the word

  828. thing worked.

  829. It was no

  830. big deal to

  831. Jesus.

  832. And when

  833. those who

  834. had been

  835. sent returned

  836. to the

  837. house,

  838. they found

  839. the servant

  840. well.

  841. Let me

  842. read that

  843. again.

  844. When those

  845. who had been

  846. sent returned

  847. to the house,

  848. they found

  849. the servant

  850. well.

  851. One

  852. commentator

  853. writes this,

  854. a greater

  855. miracle of

  856. healing than

  857. this is

  858. nowhere

  859. recorded in

  860. the

  861. gospels.

  862. Without

  863. even seeing

  864. the sufferer,

  865. without a

  866. touch of the

  867. hand or a

  868. look in the

  869. eye, the

  870. Lord restores

  871. strength to

  872. this dying

  873. man, or

  874. he might

  875. be a

  876. boy, by

  877. a single

  878. word.

  879. He speaks

  880. and the

  881. sick man

  882. is cured.

  883. He commands

  884. and the

  885. disease

  886. departs.

  887. So let

  888. me put it

  889. this way.

  890. Jesus'

  891. power in

  892. Luke 7

  893. reminds me

  894. a lot of

  895. God's

  896. power.

  897. In

  898. Genesis 1.

  899. It's the

  900. same word,

  901. isn't it?

  902. God said,

  903. let there be

  904. light, and

  905. there was

  906. light.

  907. God said,

  908. let there be

  909. life, and

  910. there was

  911. life.

  912. A one-word

  913. miracle from

  914. a distance.

  915. Not a

  916. problem.

  917. Not a

  918. big deal

  919. for Jesus.

  920. What is a

  921. big deal, and

  922. what Jesus

  923. makes a big

  924. deal of, is

  925. this man's

  926. faith.

  927. Jesus marvels

  928. at it.

  929. Surprise,

  930. surprise,

  931. surprise.

  932. It's the

  933. whole point of

  934. the passage.

  935. So let

  936. me ask you

  937. this, wouldn't

  938. it be great

  939. to live a

  940. life, a

  941. life of

  942. faith, that

  943. Jesus would

  944. be taken

  945. aback by?

  946. To live a

  947. life of

  948. faith that

  949. Jesus would

  950. be amazed

  951. at?

  952. Wouldn't it

  953. be great to

  954. have the

  955. sincerity,

  956. sensitivity,

  957. humility,

  958. love, depth

  959. of faith as

  960. this Gentile

  961. soldier?

  962. To have

  963. unlimited

  964. confidence in

  965. Jesus'

  966. absolute

  967. authority?

  968. Wouldn't it

  969. be great to

  970. humbly trust

  971. in Jesus?

  972. This miracle

  973. was not

  974. written to

  975. teach you

  976. that any

  977. time you

  978. need a

  979. miracle, just

  980. ask and

  981. Jesus will

  982. give it.

  983. They weren't

  984. written for

  985. that purpose.

  986. The miracles

  987. were written

  988. to show you

  989. the gospel,

  990. to show us

  991. the gospel in

  992. parable form.

  993. So for

  994. example, Jesus

  995. healed the

  996. paralytic.

  997. Do you

  998. remember the

  999. story?

  1000. He demonstrated

  1001. that he had

  1002. the power to

  1003. heal.

  1004. Well, yeah.

  1005. But what is

  1006. the point?

  1007. He has the

  1008. power to

  1009. forgive sins.

  1010. The power to

  1011. forgive sins.

  1012. And when

  1013. Jesus healed

  1014. Jairus'

  1015. dead daughter

  1016. and this

  1017. centurion's

  1018. dead servant,

  1019. dying servant,

  1020. what is the

  1021. point?

  1022. It shows he

  1023. has authority

  1024. over death

  1025. and that he

  1026. can forgive

  1027. sins.

  1028. He has

  1029. authority over

  1030. death.

  1031. And when we

  1032. see the

  1033. centurion,

  1034. this Gentile

  1035. who needed a

  1036. Jewish Messiah,

  1037. this mighty

  1038. man who

  1039. desperately

  1040. needed help,

  1041. this worthy

  1042. man who

  1043. was so

  1044. unworthy

  1045. before Jesus,

  1046. this commander

  1047. of words who

  1048. knew that only

  1049. Jesus' word

  1050. would work,

  1051. when we see

  1052. the centurion,

  1053. we see faith.

  1054. We see the

  1055. face of faith.

  1056. This is what

  1057. saving faith

  1058. looks like.

  1059. It looks like

  1060. this.

  1061. And it's what

  1062. our faith should

  1063. look like.

  1064. It's a story of

  1065. salvation.

  1066. salvation is

  1067. not given to

  1068. us based on

  1069. our ethnic

  1070. background.

  1071. If you're a

  1072. Jew, great.

  1073. If you're not

  1074. a Jew, not

  1075. so great.

  1076. If you're

  1077. Welsh, terrific.

  1078. Anything else,

  1079. not so much.

  1080. It's not based

  1081. on our ethnic

  1082. background.

  1083. It's not based

  1084. on your generosity

  1085. and charity.

  1086. You give money

  1087. away for the

  1088. temple, marvellous.

  1089. You give money

  1090. away for charity,

  1091. good.

  1092. But it won't

  1093. get you into the

  1094. kingdom of heaven.

  1095. Salvation is

  1096. not based on

  1097. your moral

  1098. worth.

  1099. Are you a

  1100. person who's

  1101. praised for

  1102. being worthy?

  1103. For your

  1104. good works,

  1105. wonderful, but

  1106. it's not so

  1107. wonderful that

  1108. it'll get you

  1109. into heaven.

  1110. The only

  1111. ground, the

  1112. only basis of

  1113. salvation is

  1114. faith.

  1115. What kind

  1116. of faith?

  1117. This kind

  1118. of faith.

  1119. A faith that

  1120. abandons trust

  1121. in ourselves

  1122. and totally

  1123. and without

  1124. reservation

  1125. relies on the

  1126. person of

  1127. Christ and

  1128. the authority

  1129. of his word.

  1130. Do you have

  1131. this kind of

  1132. faith?

  1133. Do you?

  1134. I know where

  1135. to get it.

  1136. It's right here,

  1137. isn't it?

  1138. It's right here in

  1139. this story, in

  1140. story form in the

  1141. Bible.

  1142. And I know where

  1143. else to find it.

  1144. It is right there

  1145. in heaven for the

  1146. asking.

  1147. And ask

  1148. Jesus

  1149. right now

  1150. even to speak

  1151. a word.

  1152. To speak a word

  1153. into your hearts.

1154. And he will do it.

  1155. Let's bow our heads

  1156. in prayer.

  1157. Let's pray.
