  1. Thank you.

  2. Thank you.

  3. Thank you.

  4. Thank you.

  5. We respond when we meet injustice.

  6. Well, James' readers were used to injustice.

  7. Back in chapter 2, verse 6, James says,

  8. the rich are the ones dragging you off into court,

  9. harassing you.

  10. We go into that again at the end of verse 6 of chapter 5.

  11. Some of the poor Christians in this church were being exploited,

  12. treated unjustly.

  13. The powerless poor were helpless.

  14. It's exactly the situation that many of our brothers and sisters around the world find themselves in,

  15. like that church in Algeria,

  16. with apparently no records,

  17. where apparently Judge Hategood is in control of the court,

  18. to go back to Vanity Fair.

  19. So how are we to respond to that kind of injustice?

  20. What are we to do?

  21. How are James' readers to respond?

  22. Well, James has just been highlighting,

  23. verses 1 to 6,

  24. a way not to respond.

  25. Not to envy the wealthy and the powerful,

  26. because they're going to lose everything.

  27. Their money will rot.

  28. They will be judged.

  29. Not to emulate the envy,

  30. the powerful and wealthy,

  31. because that will not last.

  32. It will not go anywhere.

  33. This is God's world.

  34. It does not belong to the elites.

  35. It does not belong to the powerful nations,

  36. or the powerful businesses,

  37. or the powerful presidents.

  38. It is God's world.

  39. He is in control of it.

  40. And the Lord Jesus will come back to judge.

  41. That's really the point of verses 1 to 6

  42. we looked at this morning.

  43. Judgment is coming.

  44. So how then should we live?

  45. Well, James tells two things.

  46. to us,

  47. and these believers,

  48. and these verses.

  49. And the first is to live patiently,

  50. because of the gospel hope.

  51. Live patiently.

  52. I'm sure you caught that in the reading.

  53. Look at verse 7.

  54. Be patient, therefore, brothers,

  55. until the coming of the Lord.

  56. See how the farmer waits

  57. for precious fruits of the earth,

  58. being patient about it.

  59. And again in verse 8,

  60. he will say,

  61. be patient.

  62. James is saying,

  63. Christ will return.

  64. A day will come

  65. where everything is put right.

  66. So be patient.

  67. Wait patiently for that day.

  68. Now does that mean,

  69. be passive,

  70. do nothing?

  71. Well no,

  72. look at the illustration he uses.

  73. The patient farmer,

  74. verse 7.

  75. See how the farmer waits

  76. for precious fruit of the earth,

  77. being patient about it,

  78. until he receives

  79. the early and late rains.

  80. Now what can the farmer do

  81. to hasten the harvest?

  82. Nothing.

  83. He can't do anything, can he?

  84. That's all in God's control.

  85. When the rains come,

  86. how the harvest grows,

  87. that's God's job.

  88. The farmer has to wait patiently.

  89. So why does he wait?

  90. Because it's a precious crop.

  91. It's something he values,

  92. it's something he's looking forward to.

  93. And how does the farmer wait?

  94. Is he passive?

  95. Does he do nothing?

  96. Well I'm sure we all know farmers,

  97. even in a city like this,

  98. we might not know farmers locally,

  99. but perhaps we know some farmers,

  100. or at least know something about farmers.

  101. It's not like they sit there

  102. and do nothing all the time

  103. until harvest, is it?

  104. There's work to be done

  105. to kind of tend the crops,

  106. to keep off the birds

  107. that will eat them,

  108. to kill off the weeds

  109. that will grow up.

  110. They're not passive.

  111. They do things to facilitate

  112. the crop, don't they?

  113. They cooperate with the growth

  114. of the harvest,

  115. as they wait patiently for it.

  116. And as Christians,

  117. that's how we are to respond

  118. to the trials and difficulties

  119. of our own lives.

  120. Be it injustice we experience,

  121. or the everyday difficulties

  122. that can affect anyone and everyone.

  123. So if you remember how James

  124. started this later,

  125. it's worth turning back

  126. to chapter 1,

  127. verses 2 to 4.

  128. Count it all joy, my brothers,

  129. when you need trials

  130. of various kinds.

  131. How can we keep trials as joy?

  132. Here's the reason.

  133. For you know that the testing

  134. of your faith

  135. produces steadfastness,

  136. and that steadfastness

  137. have its full effect,

  138. that you may be perfect

  139. and complete,

  140. lacking in nothing.

  141. See, there is the harvest

  142. that trials produce

  143. in our own lives.

  144. Steadfastness,

  145. that as we cooperate with it,

  146. makes us perfect

  147. and complete,

  148. lacking in nothing.

  149. So there's what God,

  150. in his grace,

  151. wants to achieve in our lives.

  152. He wants us to cooperate

  153. with that,

  154. with patience,

  155. as he produces this harvest

  156. of steadfastness,

  157. and of maturity,

  158. and completeness

  159. in our lives.

  160. So how exactly

  161. do we do that?

  162. How are we able

  163. to wait patiently?

  164. I find it hard enough

  165. to wait patiently

  166. for a bus when it's late.

  167. I only wait patiently

  168. during trials.

  169. Well, look at what

  170. James tells us

  171. in verse 8.

  172. Establish your hearts,

  173. for the coming

  174. of the Lord is at hand.

  175. Establish your hearts.

  176. A couple of weeks ago,

  177. during the half-term break,

  178. Mary, my wife,

  179. took the kids down

  180. to her mother

  181. in Hampshire for a few days

  182. while our kitchen

  183. was being ripped apart.

  184. And on their way back,

  185. they got a flat tyre

  186. on the M3,

  187. and so had to pull in

  188. just before the M3-M25 junction.

  189. And Zoe,

  190. being seven years old,

  191. was somewhat upset

  192. and perturbed

  193. by the fact

  194. they're now standing

  195. next to a big motorway

  196. with cars flying past.

  197. I suspect

  198. we can all

  199. sympathise with her.

  200. So what did Mary

  201. all have to do

  202. in that situation?

  203. I don't phone the ADA,

  204. she had to try

  205. and establish

  206. Zoe's heart

  207. by reminding her

  208. of the truth

  209. of the fact

  210. the AA man

  211. was going to come

  212. and they were going

  213. to be top of the

  214. priority list

  215. because a single female

  216. with two young children

  217. and so the guy

  218. came pretty quickly.

  219. But her job

  220. was to reassure her

  221. with the truth

  222. of the closeness

  223. of the coming

  224. of a rescuer.

  225. To reassure her.

  226. We even have

  227. a greater truth,

  228. a more imminent arrival

  229. to look forward to.

  230. The coming of the Lord

  231. is at hand

  232. says James.

  233. So to establish

  234. ourselves in that truth.

  235. He is ready to appear.

  236. He is close by.

  237. The judge will come

  238. to vindicate his people.

  239. He's at hand

  240. in the sense

  241. that he has

  242. nothing else to do.

  243. Nothing else

  244. for God

  245. to complete

  246. on his to-do list

  247. other than

  248. send the Lord Jesus back.

  249. He is ready

  250. to be revealed,

  251. ready to come.

  252. So James says

  253. establish your hearts

  254. as you wait

  255. for his return.

  256. If you're building

  257. up a fence,

  258. what do you do?

  259. You have to dig down

  260. deep to put the fence

  261. pole in

  262. to make sure

  263. it's firm

  264. and well established.

  265. That's the idea here,

  266. to establish,

  267. to get this firmly fixed,

  268. get our hearts

  269. firmly fixed

  270. in this truth.

  271. So how do we do that?

  272. Well, Paul

  273. writing for Romans,

  274. Romans 16, 25,

  275. says that God

  276. is able to establish

  277. the same words,

  278. establish or strengthen

  279. our hearts

  280. according to the gospel

  281. and the preaching

  282. of Jesus Christ.

  283. 1 Thessalonians 3,

    1 Thessalonians 3:2

  284. verse 2,

  285. Paul sends Timothy

  286. to the church

  287. in Thessalonica

  288. to establish

  289. and exhort them

  290. in the faith.

  291. It's the same word again.

  292. Do you see how

  293. we get established?

  294. Do you see how

  295. our hearts get established?

  296. It's by the gospel.

  297. It's by feeding

  298. on the gospel.

  299. It's by listening

  300. to the gospel,

  301. by speaking the truth

  302. of the gospel

  303. to one another,

  304. by gathering

  305. around the Lord's table

  306. as he strengthens

  307. our hearts,

  308. using the bread and wine

  309. to strengthen

  310. our faith

  311. as bread

  312. strengthens our bodies

  313. for life.

  314. Through speaking

  315. the gospel

  316. to one another,

  317. through meditating

  318. on the great gospel

  319. promises,

  320. we establish our hearts

  321. in this truth

  322. that the Lord Jesus

  323. is coming back.

  324. Indeed,

  325. the Lord God Almighty

  326. establishes our hearts.

  327. That's what Paul

  328. prays for for the

  329. Thessalonians

  330. later on in 1 Thessalonians 3.

  331. So first,

  332. we establish our hearts

  333. so the hope

  334. of the return

  335. of the Lord Jesus

  336. becomes more real

  337. to us.

  338. But also,

  339. as our hearts

  340. are established

  341. in the gospel,

  342. we are less shocked

  343. by the horrors

  344. and injustices

  345. of the world,

  346. aren't we?

  347. Francis Schaeffer

  348. said that a Christian

  349. should never have

  350. the reaction designated

  351. by the word

  352. shocked to anything.

  353. Why?

  354. Because if we believe

  355. the gospel,

  356. if we understand

  357. the gospel,

  358. then we know

  359. the depravity,

  360. the evil,

  361. within our own hearts

  362. naturally.

  363. And so nothing

  364. about the world

  365. will shock

  366. or surprise us.

  367. People who do not

  368. understand the gospel,

  369. the average secular

  370. person on the street

  371. is horrified

  372. by injustice

  373. in the Middle East,

  374. horrified by

  375. child abuse scandals

  376. of Jimmy Savile

  377. and the like.

  378. They're right to be

  379. horrified,

  380. but they don't

  381. understand it.

  382. They have a category

  383. for it.

  384. Why?

  385. Because they do not

  386. have a category

  387. for sin.

  388. If we understand

  389. the gospel,

  390. if our hearts

  391. are established

  392. in the gospel,

  393. then no evil

  394. in the world

  395. will shock us

  396. because we know

  397. what we are capable

  398. of.

  399. We know the evil

  400. we have been

  401. redeemed from

  402. by our Lord Jesus.

  403. We know the sin

  404. of our own hearts.

  405. So we need to

  406. establish our hearts

  407. in the gospel

  408. so we're not

  409. surprised and

  410. shocked on the

  411. one hand by

  412. pain and injustice,

  413. but also on the

  414. other hand so we

  415. have hope.

  416. So we remember

  417. firmly the Lord

  418. Jesus will come

  419. back and we'll

  420. put everything right.

  421. That one day

  422. every tear will

  423. be wiped from

  424. the eyes of

  425. Jesus' people.

  426. But the question

  427. for all of us

  428. here is,

  429. are our hearts

  430. established in

  431. the gospel?

  432. What are you

  433. and I putting

  434. our hope in?

  435. What are we

  436. putting our hope

  437. in?

  438. During all those

  439. floods and

  440. storms that we

  441. had and the

  442. snow that was

  443. coming to New

  444. York a few

  445. months ago,

  446. people are often

  447. told to get

  448. out of their

  449. houses because

  450. it was going

  451. to be dangerous

  452. or there were

  453. tornadoes coming

  454. through the

  455. area.

  456. People are

  457. told to get

  458. out, get

  459. somewhere safe.

  460. The question

  461. for us is,

  462. are we standing

  463. somewhere safe?

  464. Given this

  465. judgment is

  466. coming, given

  467. Jesus the

  468. judge is at

  469. the door, at

  470. hand, ready

  471. to come back,

  472. are we somewhere

  473. safe?

  474. What do we

  475. put our hope

  476. in?

  477. What makes

  478. you feel safe?

  479. The fact you're

  480. better than

  481. others?

  482. The fact you're

  483. not like those

  484. people over

  485. there?

  486. The fact that

  487. you've been to

  488. church?

  489. The fact that

  490. you try to be a

  491. nice person,

  492. you're open

  493. minded, you try

  494. to treat people

  495. fairly?

  496. Where is it

  497. you put your

  498. hope?

  499. The way that

  500. judgment comes,

  501. you will not

  502. be destroyed

  503. but saved.

  504. The truth is

  505. none of us

  506. live up to

  507. our own

  508. standards,

  509. do we?

  510. Let alone

  511. live up to

  512. God's

  513. standards.

  514. So if we're

  515. going to be

  516. safe when a

  517. righteous,

  518. perfect judge

  519. comes back,

  520. we need to

  521. make sure that

  522. our sin has

  523. already been

  524. paid for,

  525. otherwise we

  526. will pay for

  527. it ourselves.

  528. God has

  529. provided a

  530. way for

  531. that.

  532. The Lord

  533. Jesus came

  534. to earth to

  535. live the

  536. life that I

  537. could never

  538. live, that

  539. you could

  540. never live.

  541. He died a

  542. death on the

  543. cross that we

  544. deserve to

  545. die and was

  546. raised to new

  547. life, to offer

  548. forgiveness and

  549. life to each

  550. one of us.

  551. So there is a

  552. safe place to

  553. be and that

  554. safe place is in

  555. the Lord Jesus,

  556. to turn to

  557. him in faith

  558. and in repentance,

  559. turning from

  560. living our

  561. own way,

  562. with all our

  563. selfishness,

  564. with all our

  565. judgmentalism

  566. towards others

  567. who don't

  568. meet our

  569. standards, and

  570. to come to

  571. Jesus and

  572. say, I am a

  573. rebel, I

  574. need your

  575. forgiveness, I

  576. need you to

  577. be my king,

  578. please take

  579. my sin and

  580. let me be

  581. yours.

  582. So that's a

  583. safe place to

  584. stand, we're

  585. to establish

  586. our hearts in

  587. that truth.

  588. faith.

  589. So that's the

  590. first way we

  591. live in a

  592. world of

  593. injustice and

  594. suffering, we

  595. live patiently

  596. because of the

  597. gospel hope, the

  598. hope of sins

  599. forgiven and

  600. eternal life to

  601. come where every

  602. tear is wiped

  603. away.

  604. But there's a

  605. second thing

  606. James says as

  607. well, if we're

  608. living patiently

  609. with the gospel

  610. hope, how would

  611. you expect that

  612. to be seen?

  613. How do you

  614. expect James

  615. to carry on

  616. here?

  617. I guess I'd

  618. expect it to be

  619. seen in our

  620. ambitions, our

  621. attitudes, what

  622. our goals in

  623. life are.

  624. But James has

  625. something very

  626. different to

  627. say.

  628. He says that

  629. hope will be

  630. seen, that

  631. patience will be

  632. seen in the

  633. way we speak, in

  634. our words.

  635. So firstly, we're

  636. to live patiently

  637. in the gospel

  638. hope, and

  639. secondly, we're

  640. to speak with

  641. integrity because

  642. of the gospel

  643. hope.

  644. We're to speak

  645. with integrity.

  646. So speech has

  647. been a big issue

  648. for James all

  649. the way through

  650. this letter.

  651. So if you

  652. follow it through

  653. for a moment,

  654. chapter 1,

  655. verse 26,

  656. James says,

  657. if anyone

  658. thinks he's

  659. religious and

  660. does not bridle

  661. his tongue but

  662. deceives his

  663. heart, this

  664. person's religion

  665. is worthless.

  666. He goes on,

  667. chapter 3,

  668. verse 8,

  669. says that no

  670. human being,

  671. it's on the

  672. same page,

  673. no human being

  674. can control

  675. the tongue.

  676. No human being

  677. can tame the

  678. tongue, it is

  679. a restless evil

  680. full of deadly

  681. poison.

  682. With it we

  683. bless our

  684. Lord and

  685. Father, with

  686. it we curse

  687. people who

  688. are made in

  689. the likeness

  690. of God.

  691. From the

  692. same mouth

  693. come blessing

  694. and cursing.

  695. My brothers,

  696. these things

  697. ought not to

  698. be said.

  699. Then chapter

  700. 4, verses

  701. 11 and 12,

  702. he warns

  703. about speaking

  704. evil against

  705. someone else,

  706. judging someone

  707. else.

  708. Anyone who

  709. does is judging

  710. the law,

  711. makes themselves

  712. a lawbreaker.

  713. See, for

  714. James, the

  715. way we use

  716. our tongues

  717. is all

  718. important.

  719. Why?

  720. Well, it's

  721. because what

  722. Jesus said,

  723. Matthew 12,

    Matthew 12:34

  724. verse 34,

  725. it is out of

  726. the abundance

  727. of the heart

  728. that the mouth

  729. speaks.

  730. It's out of

  731. the abundance

  732. of the heart

  733. that the mouth

  734. speaks.

  735. So we can

  736. tell if we're

  737. living patiently,

  738. waiting patiently

  739. because of the

  740. gospel hope,

  741. because of the

  742. kind of things

  743. that we say.

  744. So let's

  745. look at what

  746. James says

  747. about the

  748. tongue there.

  749. Speak with

  750. integrity

  751. because of

  752. the gospel

  753. hope.

  754. He actually

  755. gives us

  756. two commands

  757. to speak

  758. with integrity

  759. in verses

  760. 9 and 12.

  761. First of all,

  762. do not grumble

  763. and secondly,

  764. do not swear.

  765. Look at verse

  766. 9, first of all.

  767. Do not grumble.

  768. Do not grumble

  769. against one another,

  770. brothers,

  771. so that you

  772. may not be

  773. judged.

  774. Now that word

  775. translated grumbling

  776. is also used

  777. of groaning

  778. in other parts

  779. of the Bible.

  780. So the word

  781. Paul uses

  782. in Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  783. chapter 8,

  784. 23,

  785. we're talking

  786. about the

  787. difficulties of

  788. life.

  789. We groan

  790. inwardly,

  791. waiting for the

  792. redemption of

  793. our bodies

  794. when Christ

  795. Jesus is

  796. revealed.

  797. But that's a

  798. groaning upwardly

  799. to God

  800. in hope.

  801. Whereas here,

  802. James is talking

  803. about a groaning

  804. or a grumbling

  805. that goes out

  806. to one another.

  807. See,

  808. when we're under

  809. pressure,

  810. when life is

  811. difficult for us

  812. as individuals,

  813. who do we

  814. take it out

  815. on most?

  816. It's the people

  817. closest to us,

  818. isn't it?

  819. If I'm having

  820. a stressful day,

  821. it's my wife

  822. and my children

  823. who sadly

  824. will get their

  825. brunt of it.

  826. Because that's

  827. what we're like.

  828. Under pressure,

  829. we say things

  830. to the people

  831. near us.

  832. And that's what

  833. James is

  834. commanding us

  835. not to do.

  836. And there are

  837. all sorts of

  838. reasons people

  839. could have

  840. groaned and

  841. grumbled against

  842. each other

  843. in this Christian

  844. community James

  845. is writing to.

  846. The poor

  847. could have

  848. grumbled against

  849. the rich who

  850. are often

  851. oppressing them.

  852. The rich may

  853. have grumbled

  854. about the poor

  855. and didn't

  856. understand the

  857. pressures they

  858. were under.

  859. And in churches

  860. when life is hard

  861. it's very easy

  862. to grumble

  863. about other

  864. people.

  865. If only they

  866. would do what

  867. they're supposed

  868. to be doing.

  869. If only they

  870. would play their

  871. part.

  872. If only they

  873. understood me.

  874. And grumbling

  875. is such an easy

  876. thing, isn't it?

  877. It's the lowest

  878. common denominator.

  879. I remember

  880. a place I used

  881. to work,

  882. every lunchtime

  883. pretty much,

  884. what was the

  885. conversation about

  886. in the workplace?

  887. It was kind of

  888. good natured

  889. grumbling about

  890. the management

  891. or about the

  892. latest stupid

  893. bit of advertising

  894. the marketing

  895. department had

  896. put out or

  897. whatever it was.

  898. It was grumbling

  899. because it's so

  900. easy to find

  901. things to grumble

  902. about together.

  903. Well at least

  904. it is if you're

  905. British anyway.

  906. That's kind of

  907. the way we are.

  908. But James

  909. says don't do it.

  910. Don't do it.

  911. Do not grumble

  912. against one another

  913. brothers so that

  914. you may not be

  915. judged.

  916. Behold the judge

  917. is standing

  918. at the door.

  919. I went to a

  920. boarding school

  921. for better or

  922. worse and in

  923. the door tree

  924. at night there

  925. would often be

  926. a lot of chat

  927. and people moaning

  928. about the teachers

  929. and moaning

  930. about one another

  931. as you'd imagine.

  932. I still remember

  933. those horrible

  934. moments where we

  935. were talking to

  936. each other and

  937. saying what bad

  938. man our house

  939. master was and

  940. the door would

  941. open and he'd be

  942. standing there.

  943. And you think

  944. what have I just

  945. said?

  946. What did he just

  947. hear?

  948. Oh no!

  949. Well that's the

  950. idea here.

  951. James is saying

  952. the judge is at

  953. the door.

  954. Now that's a

  955. good thing.

  956. He's at the

  957. door because he's

  958. going to put

  959. right what is

  960. wrong.

  961. He'll put the

  962. end to all the

  963. oppression and

  964. injustice.

  965. But it also

  966. means he's

  967. listening into

  968. your conversations.

  969. Be careful how

  970. you speak.

  971. It's a reason to

  972. hope because he's

  973. close.

  974. It's a reason to

  975. be careful.

  976. Now that doesn't

  977. mean that you say

  978. the wrong thing

  979. and you're going to

  980. miss out on

  981. eternal life.

  982. No, we're not

  983. saved by what we

  984. say or we don't

  985. say.

  986. We're saved by the

  987. grace of our Lord

  988. Jesus Christ, by

  989. faith in Christ

  990. Jesus.

  991. But scripture is

  992. clear, there are

  993. some levels of

  994. rewards in one way

  995. or another.

  996. So we need to be

  997. careful in what we

  998. say.

  999. And James uses a

  1000. couple of examples

1001. to help us to not

  1002. grumble.

  1003. First of all, the

  1004. example of the

  1005. prophets, verse 10.

  1006. As an example of

  1007. suffering and

  1008. patience, brothers,

  1009. take the prophets

  1010. who spoke in the

  1011. name of the Lord.

  1012. Now the Old

  1013. Testament prophets

  1014. often had a really

  1015. hard time.

  1016. Jeremiah was so

  1017. hated by the

  1018. people he was

  1019. put down a

  1020. well and kind

  1021. of left there

  1022. to die, although

  1023. someone else dug

  1024. him back up

  1025. again.

  1026. There was a

  1027. legend, a

  1028. tradition had

  1029. arisen by the

  1030. first century that

  1031. prophet Isaiah was

  1032. sawn in two.

  1033. We'll read a bit

  1034. about that in

  1035. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 11:37

  1036. 11, verse 37.

  1037. So prophets

  1038. often suffered

  1039. terrible injustice

  1040. and yet how

  1041. did they respond?

  1042. They spoke in

  1043. the name of the

  1044. Lord, James

  1045. says.

  1046. They spoke God's

  1047. message.

  1048. Very often that

  1049. was denouncing the

  1050. injustices of the

  1051. day.

  1052. But they spoke

  1053. with integrity,

  1054. speaking God's

  1055. truth.

  1056. So their patience

  1057. certainly wasn't

  1058. passive.

  1059. It meant speaking

  1060. out.

  1061. And they suffered

  1062. for that and yet

  1063. James says, verse

  1064. 11, behold we

  1065. consider those

  1066. blessed who remain

  1067. steadfast.

  1068. We look back

  1069. on the

  1070. Jeremiah's and

  1071. the Isaiah's and

  1072. the Amos's and

  1073. the Hosea's of

  1074. the day.

  1075. We consider them

  1076. blessed now because

  1077. their words were

  1078. used to build up

  1079. the church.

  1080. So James is

  1081. saying, keep

  1082. persevering in the

  1083. trials, speaking

  1084. truth.

  1085. I wonder, can you

  1086. think of people in

  1087. your own lives?

  1088. I know I can.

  1089. People who suffered

  1090. greatly as

  1091. Christians.

  1092. Maybe through

  1093. persecution, maybe

  1094. through ill

  1095. health.

  1096. And yet their

  1097. perseverance has

  1098. been a blessing

  1099. to others and we

  1100. consider them

  1101. blessed now.

  1102. Blessed by the

  1103. Lord God who

  1104. looked after them.

  1105. So that's

  1106. example one, the

  1107. prophets who

  1108. spoke in the name

  1109. of the Lord.

  1110. The second

  1111. example is Job,

  1112. down there in

  1113. verse 11.

  1114. You've heard of

  1115. the steadfastness

  1116. of Job.

  1117. Now Job in some

  1118. ways is an

  1119. unusual example.

  1120. If you've read

  1121. the book of Job

  1122. you'll know he's

  1123. a man who's

  1124. suffered hugely

  1125. in many ways.

  1126. Yet he spends a

  1127. lot of time

  1128. groaning.

  1129. But Job's

  1130. groaning was to

  1131. the Lord rather

  1132. than to other

  1133. people most of

  1134. the time.

  1135. He groaned to

  1136. the Lord in

  1137. prayer rather

  1138. than grumbling

  1139. about those

  1140. around him.

  1141. And he spoke

  1142. what was right.

  1143. So for example,

  1144. right at the

  1145. beginning of the

  1146. book, Job's

  1147. wife tells him

  1148. to curse God

  1149. and die.

  1150. But he said

  1151. to her, you

  1152. speak as one

  1153. other foolish

  1154. women would

  1155. speak.

  1156. Shall we

  1157. receive good

  1158. from God

  1159. and shall we

  1160. not receive

  1161. evil?

  1162. In all this,

  1163. Job did not

  1164. sin with his

  1165. lips.

  1166. And at the

  1167. end of the

  1168. book of Job,

  1169. Job chapter

    Job 42:7

  1170. 42 verse 7,

  1171. as the Lord

  1172. appears to

  1173. Job, the

  1174. Lord then

  1175. turns to

  1176. Job's

  1177. comforters,

  1178. who'd spoken

  1179. lies all the

  1180. way through,

  1181. and says

  1182. this to

  1183. his comforters,

  1184. to Eliphaz

  1185. the Temanite,

  1186. My anger

  1187. burns against

  1188. you and

  1189. against your

  1190. two friends,

  1191. for you

  1192. have not

  1193. spoken of

  1194. me what

  1195. is right,

  1196. as my

  1197. servant Job

  1198. has.

  1199. See why

  1200. James is

  1201. using this

  1202. example?

  1203. With all

  1204. the pressure,

  1205. with all

  1206. the suffering,

  1207. with all

  1208. his complaining

  1209. to God,

  1210. and praying

  1211. to God,

  1212. Job spoke

  1213. what is

  1214. right.

  1215. Not like

  1216. his counsellors,

  1217. who are mere

  1218. moralists,

  1219. who assumed

  1220. Job must have

  1221. done something

  1222. wrong to be

  1223. suffering.

  1224. And we've

  1225. got people

  1226. like that

  1227. today,

  1228. don't we?

  1229. The health

  1230. and wealth

  1231. prosperity

  1232. gospel people,

  1233. who will

  1234. say if

  1235. you're

  1236. suffering,

  1237. it's because

  1238. you don't

  1239. have enough

  1240. faith.

  1241. That's

  1242. speaking a

  1243. lie about

  1244. God,

  1245. it's not

  1246. speaking with

  1247. integrity

  1248. because of

  1249. the gospel

  1250. hope.

  1251. Also some

  1252. other theologians

  1253. who will

  1254. speak lies

  1255. about God,

  1256. trying to

  1257. make life

  1258. easier for

  1259. people.

  1260. So a few

  1261. years ago

  1262. there was a

  1263. movement called

  1264. the openness

  1265. of God.

  1266. They said God

  1267. isn't really in

  1268. control of

  1269. everything,

  1270. God just

  1271. kind of

  1272. mix it up

  1273. as he

  1274. goes along.

  1275. So if

  1276. something bad

  1277. happens to

  1278. you,

  1279. it's not

  1280. God's brought

  1281. that into

  1282. your life,

  1283. it's just

  1284. God's going

  1285. to pull a

  1286. few other

  1287. levers and

  1288. make things

  1289. work out a

  1290. bit differently.

  1291. And what

  1292. they were

  1293. trying to

  1294. do was

  1295. kind of

  1296. make God

  1297. sound nicer

  1298. or something.

  1299. Yet what

  1300. they were

  1301. actually doing

  1302. was distorting

  1303. God's

  1304. character.

  1305. They were

  1306. not speaking

  1307. the truth

  1308. with

  1309. integrity.

  1310. But you

  1311. see how

  1312. James reminds

  1313. us of

  1314. God's

  1315. character

  1316. here.

  1317. There's

  1318. another

  1319. reason for

  1320. hope.

  1321. You've

  1322. seen the

  1323. purpose of

  1324. the Lord,

  1325. how the

  1326. Lord is

  1327. compassionate

  1328. and merciful.

  1329. And what

  1330. was the

  1331. purpose of

  1332. the Lord?

  1333. Well in

  1334. Job's

  1335. life,

  1336. Job never

  1337. found out

  1338. the purpose.

  1339. But the

  1340. reader does

  1341. at the end,

  1342. Job chapter

    Job 42 chapter mention

  1343. 42,

  1344. he says

  1345. of the

  1346. Lord,

  1347. I had

  1348. heard of

  1349. you by

  1350. the hearing

  1351. of the

  1352. ear.

  1353. Now my

  1354. eye has

  1355. seen you,

  1356. therefore I

  1357. despise

  1358. myself and

  1359. repent in

  1360. dust and

  1361. ashes.

  1362. What was

  1363. the Lord's

  1364. purpose in

  1365. Job's

  1366. life?

  1367. So that

  1368. Job could

  1369. know the

  1370. Lord better.

  1371. What is

  1372. the Lord's

  1373. purpose for

  1374. suffering and

  1375. injustice and

  1376. trials in

  1377. our lives?

  1378. Miserable as

  1379. they can be?

  1380. That's what we

  1381. read earlier

  1382. from James

    James 1 chapter mention

  1383. chapter 1.

  1384. It is so

  1385. that the

  1386. testing of

  1387. our faith

  1388. will produce

  1389. steadfastness

  1390. and that

  1391. steadfastness

  1392. will get

  1393. full effect.

  1394. And we

  1395. may be

  1396. perfect and

  1397. complete,

  1398. lucky and

  1399. nothing.

  1400. See,

  1401. God is

  1402. compassionate.

  1403. He will

  1404. use trials

  1405. and difficulties

  1406. in our

  1407. lives so

  1408. they know

  1409. him better

  1410. and be

  1411. perfect and

  1412. complete.

  1413. And the

  1414. Lord's

  1415. character is

  1416. an encouragement

  1417. in that.

  1418. He is

  1419. compassionate and

  1420. merciful.

  1421. So James

  1422. says,

  1423. don't grumble.

  1424. Don't grumble.

  1425. Speak with

  1426. integrity because

  1427. of the gospel

  1428. hope and

  1429. don't grumble.

  1430. And secondly,

  1431. verse 12,

  1432. do not swear.

  1433. Above all,

  1434. my brothers,

  1435. do not swear,

  1436. either by

  1437. heaven or

  1438. by earth or

  1439. by any

  1440. other oath,

  1441. but let

  1442. your yes

  1443. be yes,

  1444. your no

  1445. be no,

  1446. so that you

  1447. may not fall

  1448. into condemnation.

  1449. Now why does

  1450. James say that

  1451. here?

  1452. What's that

  1453. going to do

  1454. with suffering

  1455. and trials

  1456. and injustice?

  1457. Well,

  1458. it could be

  1459. that some of

  1460. the poor

  1461. who are being

  1462. oppressed

  1463. by the rich

  1464. would say,

  1465. look,

  1466. we promised

  1467. to pay that

  1468. debt.

  1469. I swear I'll

  1470. pay it.

  1471. And they

  1472. would get

  1473. themselves into

  1474. even more

  1475. difficulties.

  1476. Or it may

  1477. be people

  1478. within the

  1479. Christian community

  1480. were promising,

  1481. swearing to

  1482. help one

  1483. another,

  1484. and then were

  1485. failing to meet

  1486. those demands.

  1487. Maybe even the

  1488. rich were promising

  1489. to let people

  1490. off and they're

  1491. not doing it.

  1492. Truth is,

  1493. we don't quite

  1494. know if any

  1495. one of those

  1496. things are

  1497. possible,

  1498. aren't they?

  1499. what can

  1500. happen to

  1501. us when we

  1502. see people

  1503. in difficulties?

  1504. We can promise

  1505. to help,

  1506. but then fail

  1507. to do it.

  1508. Because we

  1509. promise more

  1510. than we can

  1511. deliver.

  1512. We can promise

  1513. to pray,

  1514. but then we

  1515. fail to.

  1516. See,

  1517. what's underlying

  1518. all this is

  1519. the need to

  1520. speak with

  1521. integrity.

  1522. The Lord

  1523. Jesus himself

  1524. said,

  1525. Matthew

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  1526. chapter 5,

  1527. Do not

  1528. swear by

  1529. heaven or

  1530. by earth.

  1531. Do not

  1532. take an

  1533. oath by

  1534. your head

  1535. if you

  1536. cannot make

  1537. one hair

  1538. white or

  1539. black.

  1540. Let what

  1541. you say

  1542. simply be

  1543. yes or

  1544. no.

  1545. Anything

  1546. more than

  1547. this comes

  1548. from evil.

  1549. The point

  1550. is we're

  1551. to be people

  1552. of integrity,

  1553. that we do

  1554. what we say

  1555. we'll do,

  1556. whatever the

  1557. pressure is

  1558. upon us,

  1559. because we're

  1560. Jesus people,

  1561. we're people

  1562. who simply

  1563. say yes or

  1564. no.

  1565. We speak

  1566. with integrity

  1567. because of

  1568. the gospel

  1569. hype.

  1570. And that

  1571. is possible

  1572. because as

  1573. we trust in

  1574. Jesus,

  1575. we're made

  1576. into new

  1577. people.

  1578. James said

  1579. back in the

  1580. beginning of

  1581. the letter,

  1582. chapter 1,

  1583. verse 18,

  1584. that God

  1585. has brought

  1586. us forth

  1587. by the

  1588. word of

  1589. truth.

  1590. We might

  1591. be a

  1592. kind of

  1593. first fruit

  1594. of his

  1595. new

  1596. creatures.

  1597. God is

  1598. making us

  1599. new through

  1600. the gospel.

  1601. So to speak

  1602. with integrity

  1603. because of

  1604. the gospel

  1605. hope,

  1606. and to

  1607. live patiently

  1608. because of

  1609. the gospel

  1610. hope.

  1611. because one

  1612. day,

  1613. Jesus is

  1614. coming back.

  1615. The judge

  1616. is at the

  1617. door.

  1618. He is

  1619. ready to

  1620. come back.

  1621. And what

  1622. will happen

  1623. when he

  1624. does come

  1625. back?

  1626. Let me read

  1627. to you

  1628. from 2

    2 Thessalonians 1 chapter mention

  1629. Thessalonians

  1630. chapter 1,

  1631. a little

  1632. reminder of

  1633. what will

  1634. happen on

  1635. that day

  1636. for all our

  1637. oppressed

  1638. brothers and

  1639. sisters around

  1640. the world.

  1641. What is

  1642. going to

  1643. come?

  1644. Paul says

  1645. there,

  1646. they,

  1647. those who

  1648. oppress

  1649. you,

  1650. those who

  1651. persecute

  1652. you,

  1653. will suffer

  1654. the punishment

  1655. of eternal

  1656. destruction

  1657. away from

  1658. the presence

  1659. of the

  1660. Lord,

  1661. from the

  1662. glory of

  1663. his might,

  1664. when he

  1665. comes on

  1666. that day

  1667. to be

  1668. glorified in

  1669. his saints

  1670. and to be

  1671. marveled at

  1672. among all

  1673. those who

  1674. believed.

  1675. That is what

  1676. is going to

  1677. happen one

  1678. day.

  1679. The judge

  1680. is at the

  1681. door,

  1682. ready to

  1683. come back.

  1684. the oppressors,

  1685. the governments

  1686. who oppress

  1687. the church

  1688. like that

  1689. church in

  1690. Algeria,

  1691. will face

  1692. judgment.

  1693. Everyone who

  1694. does not

  1695. obey the

  1696. gospel,

  1697. as Paul

  1698. puts it

  1699. here,

  1700. he will

  1701. reflect vengeance

  1702. on those

  1703. who do not

  1704. know God

  1705. and on those

  1706. who do not

  1707. obey the

  1708. gospel of

  1709. our Lord

  1710. Jesus Christ.

  1711. Those who

  1712. have not

  1713. vowed before

  1714. Jesus,

  1715. the Lord,

  1716. and repented

  1717. and believed

  1718. in him,

  1719. will face

  1720. judgment.

  1721. So in the

  1722. meantime,

  1723. how do we

  1724. live?

  1725. We live with

  1726. patience because

  1727. of the gospel

  1728. hope.

  1729. The world will

  1730. be put right

  1731. when Jesus

  1732. comes back.

  1733. We speak

  1734. with integrity

  1735. because of

  1736. the gospel

  1737. hope.

  1738. Because we

  1739. are being

  1740. made into

  1741. new people

  1742. through the

  1743. word of

  1744. truth.

  1745. And if you

  1746. have not yet

  1747. bowed the

  1748. knee to

  1749. obey the

  1750. gospel of

  1751. our Lord

  1752. Jesus,

  1753. then please

  1754. do it now.

  1755. The judge

  1756. is at the

  1757. door.

  1758. Turn to him

  1759. tonight before

  1760. it is too

  1761. late because

  1762. he is coming.

  1763. Let's pray.

  1764. Let's pray.
