  1. Mark chapter 11 and verse 1, it's on page 847. Following the Russian Revolution, the Bolsheviks executed

    Mark 11 chapter mention

  2. ! Nicholas II. They executed

  3. ! Nicholas II including his whole family, including his youngest daughter, the

  4. ! Grand Duchess of Russia, Anastasia. At least that's the claim of reliable historians

  5. and now the result of reliable DNA testing. However, history and science didn't stop Fox

  6. Animation Studios from producing that film, did they? The animated motion picture of the

  7. legend, Anastasia, emerging in the film. And it increases this kind of possibility that

  8. Anastasia survived. She survived the killing of her father and the family. And the movie

  9. tells the story of this orphan. An orphan who's got no recollection of the past. And through

  10. a number of different circumstances, she discovers her true identity. She is the lost Russian princess.

  11. She is Anastasia. She lives her life not knowing who she is. Now there's one similarity between,

  12. and one great difference between Hollywood's movie about Anastasia and Mark's account of the Lord Jesus.

  13. The similarity between Jesus and Anastasia is that they're both of royal blood. Anastasia was the daughter of the Russian

  14. Tsar. Jesus is the son of David. He comes from a royal bloodline of King David. But the great difference is to do with

  15. their identity. Anastasia, at least as the legend goes, for most of her life, did not know who she was.

  16. She didn't know. She didn't know that she was the Grand Duchess.

  17. Jesus, on the other hand, knows precisely who he was and what he was doing.

  18. So he called himself, and the text is still read to us,

  19. the Lord. He didn't dismiss the people's claim of him in verse 10,

  20. that he had something to do with the coming kingdom of David.

  21. And in the next chapter, in chapter 12, verses 35 to 37,

  22. he claims to be David's Lord.

  23. You see, when Jesus rode into Jerusalem on that donkey,

  24. on the first Palm Sunday,

  25. he knew who he was,

  26. and he knew exactly what he was doing.

  27. He knew who he was,

  28. and he knew exactly what he was doing.

  29. So look with me at verses 1 to 7.

  30. And we're introduced to that theme of fulfillment.

  31. It's a big theme.

  32. The theme of fulfillment.

  33. This is what, that is,

  34. what Jesus says will happen,

  35. happens.

  36. And it happens precisely.

  37. So look at verse 2.

  38. In verse 2 of chapter 11,

  39. Jesus says,

  40. go into the village.

  41. And in verse 4,

  42. what do they do?

  43. They go into the village.

  44. In verse 2,

  45. Jesus says,

  46. you will find a colt tied.

  47. A colt is a baby,

  48. a young donkey.

  49. And in verse 4,

  50. they find a colt tied.

  51. In verse 2,

  52. Jesus says,

  53. untie it.

  54. And in verse 4,

  55. they untie it.

  56. In verse 3,

  57. Jesus predicts that someone will question their action.

  58. They will say,

  59. what are you doing?

  60. And in verse 5,

  61. someone questions their action.

  62. And says,

  63. what are you doing?

  64. Jesus said,

  65. provide them with a response.

  66. And in verse 6,

  67. they told them what Jesus had said.

  68. In verse 2,

  69. Jesus says,

  70. bring the colt to me.

  71. And in verse 7,

  72. they bring the colt to Jesus.

  73. So very deliberately,

  74. Mark is showing us

  75. that all of Jesus' words were fulfilled.

  76. It's one thing to notice

  77. that Jesus' words are precisely fulfilled,

  78. but it's another thing

  79. to see the significance

  80. of what he desired and received.

  81. Jesus desired a colt,

  82. a young male donkey.

  83. Verse 3,

  84. he even takes that further,

  85. that the Lord has need of it.

  86. Why does Jesus have need of it?

  87. Did Jesus need this animal

  88. because his legs were tired?

  89. Was he so worn out

  90. that he refuses to walk

  91. the last two miles

  92. to Jerusalem?

  93. He's just had enough of walking

  94. and so he needs the donkey,

  95. but that's certainly not the reason.

  96. Was it that Jesus

  97. was kind of arbitrarily

  98. testing his followers,

  99. kind of displaying his authority

  100. and testing their loyalty?

  101. Was he like some mad dictator

  102. dictator,

  103. sending him on a fool's errand

  104. just to show how powerful he was,

  105. just to see if his subjects

  106. would comply with him?

  107. Of course,

  108. that's not the reason either.

  109. Jesus asked for a specific animal

  110. to reveal who he was

  111. and what his mission was about.

  112. There is fulfilment

  113. of his words

  114. and there is fulfilment

  115. of their words.

  116. In 1 Corinthians chapter 15,

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  117. we are told that Jesus died

  118. according to the scriptures

  119. and that he was buried

  120. according to the scriptures

  121. and that he rose again

  122. according to the scriptures.

  123. Well, here in Mark's gospel,

  124. as in all the gospels,

  125. Jesus rode into Jerusalem

  126. on a colt of all animals

  127. because it was according

  128. to the scriptures

  129. to fulfil prophecy.

  130. What Matthew states in

  131. Matthew 21,

  132. this takes place to fulfil

  133. what the prophet had spoken,

  134. saying,

  135. and say to the daughter of Zion,

  136. behold, your king is coming.

  137. He's coming to you

  138. humble,

  139. mounted on a donkey,

  140. on a fold of a beast of burden.

  141. Matthew states that openly

  142. in his gospel,

  143. but Mark just assumes it.

  144. Now that quote that I read to you

  145. from Matthew

  146. is actually from Zechariah chapter 9

    Zechariah 9 chapter mention

  147. and verse 9.

  148. I want you to turn there.

  149. Let me give you the page number.

  150. You'd all be able to find Zechariah

  151. very, very quickly,

  152. but it's on page 797,

  153. okay,

  154. in the church Bibles.

  155. And while you're chilling there,

  156. let me say to you,

  157. Zechariah

  158. is a very, very important book.

  159. Do you know how many

  160. quotations there are

  161. from Zechariah

  162. in the New Testament?

  163. There are 71.

  164. 71 quotations

  165. from the book of Zechariah.

  166. 31 of those

  167. come from

  168. the book of Revelation.

  169. But in the four Gospels

  170. there are 27 quotes

  171. from the book of Zechariah.

  172. 27.

  173. And most of those quotes

  174. come at the end of Jesus' life,

  175. the final week.

  176. So what does this prophet

  177. say about Jesus?

  178. He foretells,

  179. he predicts that

  180. Christ will come in loneliness.

  181. He talks about his humanity.

  182. He talks about his rejection.

  183. He talks about how Jesus

  184. would be betrayed

  185. for 30 pieces of silver.

  186. Zechariah talks about

  187. his crucifixion,

  188. his priesthood,

  189. his coming reign,

  190. just to name a few

  191. of the things he spoke to.

  192. So in Zechariah

    Zechariah 9 chapter mention

  193. chapter 9

  194. and verse 9 and 10,

  195. if you turn there,

  196. page 797

  197. if you're not there already,

  198. listen to what it says.

  199. It says,

  200. Zechariah 9 verse 9,

    Zechariah 9:9

  201. Rejoice greatly,

  202. O daughter of Zion.

  203. Shout aloud,

  204. O daughter of Jerusalem.

  205. Behold,

  206. your king has come to you,

  207. righteous,

  208. and having salvation

  209. is he,

  210. humble and mounted

  211. on a donkey,

  212. on a coat,

  213. the foal of a donkey.

  214. I will cut off

  215. the chariot from Ephraim

  216. and the war horse

  217. from Jerusalem

  218. and the battle boat

  219. shall be cut off

  220. and he shall speak

  221. peace to the nations

  222. and his rule

  223. shall be from sea to sea

  224. and from river

  225. to the ends of the earth.

  226. Verse 9

  227. of Zechariah chapter 9

    Zechariah 9 chapter mention

  228. shows us the character

  229. of the coming king.

  230. It tells us

  231. of his character.

  232. It tells us

  233. that he is righteous,

  234. that he will do

  235. what is right.

  236. It tells us

  237. that he is holy.

  238. It tells us

  239. that he is powerful.

  240. He is a righteous king

  241. and a saving king

  242. but he's also

  243. a humble king.

  244. And then verse 10

  245. tells us

  246. what he's going to do.

  247. What will he do?

  248. What will be his achievement?

  249. Well he will establish

  250. a peaceful

  251. universal kingdom

  252. and as we reflect

  253. on those verses

  254. I don't find it

  255. extraordinary

  256. to think

  257. that if God

  258. was going to raise

  259. up an earthly king

  260. to bring

  261. divine victory

  262. that if God

  263. was going to inaugurate

  264. a universal king

  265. over everywhere

  266. that such a ruler

  267. would be righteous.

  268. That God

  269. would give such a ruler

  270. who would possess

  271. the ability

  272. to save.

  273. To bring salvation.

  274. It's a contrast

  275. isn't it

  276. to the myriad

  277. to the loads

  278. of kings

  279. of the Old Testament

  280. who failed.

  281. You would only expect

  282. God's divinely

  283. appointed king

  284. that he would

  285. conform

  286. to God's law.

  287. He would

  288. obey God's law

  289. and he would

  290. bring with him

  291. redemption

  292. for all of God's people.

  293. But what is striking

  294. is that this

  295. awesome king

  296. this powerful king

  297. this righteous king

  298. this holy king

  299. this magnificent king

  300. would come in humility.

  301. He would come

  302. as the text says

  303. isn't it

  304. humble and mounted

  305. on a donkey.

  306. And the context

  307. of the book of Zechariah

  308. as well as the rest

  309. of the prophets

  310. the word humble

  311. does not just mean

  312. gentle

  313. but lowly

  314. and bowed down.

  315. The word humble

  316. in the book of Zechariah

  317. means actually

  318. one who will suffer.

  319. One commentator says

  320. all of the lowly

  321. miserable

  322. suffering condition

  323. as is depicted

  324. in Isaiah 53.

  325. You know that passage?

  326. The man of sorrow

  327. is acquainted with grief.

  328. So you see

  329. in contrast with

  330. the arrogance

  331. and the showiness

  332. that was usually

  333. associated with

  334. a ruler

  335. any ruler

  336. in the ancient world

  337. any king

  338. in his day

  339. as in ours

  340. this king

  341. will be poor.

  342. And he will be

  343. afflicted.

  344. And he will be

  345. a servant.

  346. And yet

  347. he will be

  348. a glorious lord.

  349. It's one thing

  350. isn't it

  351. to struggle

  352. in our minds

  353. with this notion

  354. of a humble king.

  355. And yet

  356. what is even more

  357. bizarre in this passage

  358. is this king

  359. who is strong enough

  360. to bring about

  361. world peace

  362. who is the

  363. magnificent ruler

  364. of God

  365. will come riding

  366. on a coat

  367. to the foal

  368. of a donkey.

  369. And these words

  370. don't strike us

  371. as strange do they

  372. because we're

  373. so familiar with them.

  374. We made palm branches

  375. when we were little.

  376. We waved at them.

  377. The cute little donkey.

  378. And yet

  379. they are so odd

  380. aren't they?

  381. They must have

  382. appeared so very odd

  383. to Zachariah's

  384. first audience

  385. as they appear

  386. odd to anyone.

  387. Maybe you

  388. were unfamiliar

  389. with Christianity.

  390. It's true

  391. isn't it

  392. that some of the

  393. judges

  394. some of the

  395. distinguished people

  396. in judges

  397. they rode on donkeys

  398. but from the time

  399. of Solomon

  400. in 1000 BC

  401. he introduces

  402. the breeding

  403. of horses.

  404. There's not

  405. another occurrence

  406. in the Old Testament

  407. of someone

  408. riding on a donkey.

  409. Even today

  410. in the Middle East

  411. donkeys are used

  412. as kind of

  413. beasts of burden

  414. they pull things.

  415. In some Islamic lands

  416. there are actual

  417. laws in the books

  418. of Islam

  419. regarding that

  420. Christians and Jews

  421. are allowed

  422. to ride only

  423. on donkeys

  424. and Muslims

  425. must ride on horses

  426. so the Muslims

  427. must be above

  428. the Jews

  429. and Christians

  430. because to ride

  431. on donkeys

  432. is a humble

  433. and lowly thing.

  434. So a king

  435. during that age

  436. would come into

  437. his capital city

  438. after a military

  439. campaign

  440. and what would

  441. he be riding?

  442. He would be riding

  443. the biggest

  444. most glorious horse

  445. wouldn't he?

  446. Or at least

  447. he'd be marching

  448. in front of

  449. all his troops

  450. it would be

  451. quite the parade

  452. quite the spectacle

  453. but the king

  454. on an ass

  455. that's a contradiction

  456. in terms isn't it?

  457. Can you imagine

  458. the queen

  459. came to Ealing?

  460. The queen

  461. came to Ealing

  462. we're all lined up

  463. there

  464. we're expecting

  465. the head

  466. to logicate

  467. or whatever it is

  468. and suddenly

  469. the E1

  470. pulls off

  471. and off

  472. she trots

  473. with a little trolley

  474. we'd be shocked

  475. wouldn't we?

  476. Or even more

  477. shocked

  478. where Ealing

  479. Broadway

  480. waiting her

  481. on Ealing

  482. Broadway

  483. and we expect

  484. to see the

  485. chariot

  486. the kind of

  487. carriage

  488. come through

  489. or the motor

  490. gate

  491. and her

  492. and Prince

  493. Charles

  494. are on a

  495. donkey

  496. it's unthinkable

  497. isn't it?

  498. E-or

  499. it would just

  500. be astonishing

  501. wouldn't it?

  502. Absolutely

  503. astonishing

  504. the king

  505. on an ass

  506. it's a contradiction

  507. in terms

  508. that Zechariah

  509. envisions for you

  510. and I

  511. a humble king

  512. riding into a

  513. capital city

  514. mounted on a

  515. crude and

  516. common beast

  517. this king

  518. was to be

  519. different from

  520. all others

  521. not only in what

  522. he brought

  523. he brings

  524. righteousness

  525. and salvation

  526. but also in his

  527. humility

  528. and in his

  529. loneliness

  530. Jerusalem's king

  531. will come

  532. riding on a

  533. donkey

  534. as verse 10

  535. predicts

  536. he will likewise

  537. wage war

  538. against all

  539. welfare

  540. he will usher

  541. in an age

  542. of peace

  543. of universal

  544. dominion

  545. beginning with

  546. the divided

  547. kingdoms

  548. of Israel

  549. being represented

  550. by Ephraim

  551. and Judah

  552. in our passage

  553. and this character

  554. will transform

  555. the worldly

  556. character of Israel

  557. into a spiritual

  558. kingdom of which

  559. you and I

  560. part

  561. the chariots

  562. the war horse

  563. the battle

  564. boats

  565. all these

  566. weapons of

  567. warfare

  568. they will be

  569. rendered useless

  570. when this

  571. king establishes

  572. world peace

  573. through his

  574. dominion

  575. verse 10

  576. informs

  577. not only will

  578. there be

  579. peace in

  580. Israel

  581. but the

  582. messianic

  583. king

  584. he will

  585. speak peace

  586. he will

  587. proclaim peace

  588. shalom to

  589. the nations

  590. a fulfilment

  591. of God's

  592. covenant

  593. with Abraham

  594. that all

  595. the families

  596. of the earth

  597. will be

  598. blessed

  599. through him

  600. well that

  601. is Zechariah

    Zechariah 9:9

  602. chapter 9

  603. verse 9

  604. and 10

  605. flip back

  606. with me

  607. to Mark 11

  608. to Mark 11

  609. and for 500

  610. years

  611. 500 years

  612. after Zechariah's

  613. prophecy

  614. there were

  615. hundreds of

  616. leaders who

  617. failed to come

  618. close

  619. there were

  620. hundreds of

  621. leaders who

  622. failed to come

  623. close to 500

  624. years to

  625. fulfilling one

  626. part of

  627. these promises

  628. there was no

  629. man in the

  630. history of

  631. the world

  632. or Israel

  633. who fitted

  634. this messianic

  635. mold

  636. who fulfilled

  637. this precise

  638. and even

  639. bizarre prophecy

  640. until Jesus

  641. of Nazareth

  642. trots into

  643. Jerusalem

  644. the Sunday

  645. before Passover

  646. 2000 years

  647. ago

  648. and all

  649. four gospel

  650. writers testified

  651. to the triumphal

  652. entry

  653. in Mark's

  654. account

  655. the first

  656. seven verses

  657. emphasize

  658. premeditated

  659. act of

  660. humility

  661. he knows

  662. what he's

  663. doing

  664. it's a

  665. premeditated

  666. act of

  667. humility

  668. and then the

  669. second thing

  670. of the passage

  671. is a deliberate

  672. exhibition of

  673. himself

  674. it's a deliberate

  675. showing of

  676. himself

  677. that he is

  678. the king

  679. of Israel

  680. as promised

  681. by Zechariah

  682. he shows

  683. himself

  684. you have a

  685. deliberate

  686. act of

  687. humility

  688. and you have

  689. a deliberate

  690. exhibition of

  691. himself

  692. people say

  693. you're making

  694. an exhibition

  695. of yourself

  696. and that's

  697. what Jesus

  698. is doing

  699. here

  700. you see

  701. Jesus orchestrates

  702. doesn't he

  703. the specific

  704. entrance into

  705. Jerusalem

  706. in order that

  707. they

  708. and in order

  709. that we

  710. might identify

  711. who he is

  712. that he is

  713. the very

  714. fulfillment of

  715. Zechariah's

  716. words

  717. every step

  718. that Jesus

  719. took here

  720. was accomplished

  721. with pain

  722. staking

  723. premeditation

  724. and isn't

  725. that obvious

  726. as we quickly

  727. went through

  728. the first

  729. seven verses

  730. the time

  731. of his entry

  732. when did it

  733. happen

  734. at the time

  735. of the

  736. Passover

  737. and the mode

  738. of his entry

  739. he came

  740. riding on a

  741. donkey

  742. listen

  743. at this point

  744. Jesus

  745. in Mark's story

  746. had walked

  747. all the way

  748. from Galilee

  749. down to

  750. near Jerusalem

  751. and surely

  752. he didn't need

  753. to go into

  754. town on a

  755. donkey

  756. did he

  757. the use

  758. of this

  759. donkey

  760. is the

  761. only time

  762. Jesus

  763. recorded

  764. as not

  765. walking

  766. he walks

  767. everywhere

  768. and it

  769. can only

  770. be a

  771. deliberate

  772. gesture

  773. he's

  774. emphasizing

  775. something

  776. he's

  777. announcing

  778. something

  779. he is

  780. self-conscious

  781. he knew

  782. who he was

  783. his self-conscious

  784. understanding

  785. of his

  786. lordship

  787. as well

  788. as his

  789. self-conscious

  790. understanding

  791. of what

  792. he's

  793. come to

  794. do

  795. and to

  796. Jesus

  797. and probably

  798. to Jesus

  799. alone

  800. at this

  801. time

  802. Pound Sunday

  803. is no victory

  804. celebration

  805. he knew

  806. who he was

  807. and he knew

  808. what his mission

  809. was going to be

  810. this is no

  811. glorious procession

  812. of the king

  813. rather he knows

  814. that it is a

  815. death march

  816. doesn't he

  817. ride on

  818. ride on

  819. in majesty

  820. ride on

  821. to die

  822. he knows

  823. this is a

  824. death march

  825. and as a

  826. symbolic act

  827. Jesus

  828. mounts this

  829. undignified

  830. unpretentious

  831. beast

  832. to show

  833. that he

  834. is the

  835. Messiah

  836. but a

  837. Messiah

  838. whose

  839. triumphal

  840. route

  841. will end

  842. at the

  843. cross

  844. an old

  845. rugged

  846. cross

  847. and as

  848. Jesus

  849. looks around

  850. at the

  851. crowd

  852. in verses

  853. 8-10

  854. you see

  855. they spread

  856. their cloaks

  857. and their

  858. palm branches

  859. down before

  860. him

  861. and they

  862. surround him

  863. with some

  864. before him

  865. and some

  866. after him

  867. and they

  868. shout

  869. Hosanna

  870. which means

  871. save us

  872. save us

  873. save us

  874. son of

  875. David

  876. you are

  877. Israel's

  878. promised king

  879. save us

  880. he could

  881. easily have

  882. whipped up

  883. their political

  884. aspirations

  885. couldn't

  886. he

  887. he could

  888. have brought

  889. about

  890. well

  891. interaction

  892. a rebellion

  893. a frenzy

  894. but what did

  895. he do

  896. look at

  897. verse 11

  898. yes he

  899. rightly

  900. puts it

  901. in this

  902. section

  903. it's probably

  904. one of the

  905. great

  906. anticlimactic

  907. verses in

  908. the whole

  909. of the

  910. bible

  911. look at

  912. verse 11

  913. if riding

  914. on a

  915. coat

  916. didn't

  917. boggle

  918. their

  919. minds

  920. and start

  921. to

  922. squelch

  923. their

  924. worldly

  925. hopes

  926. for

  927. Jesus

  928. here in

  929. verse 11

  930. we're told

  931. that he

  932. entered

  933. Jerusalem

  934. and he

  935. went to

  936. the temple

  937. if this

  938. was a

  939. video

  940. there'd be

  941. music

  942. what is

  943. going to

  944. happen

  945. when he

  946. gets to

  947. the temple

  948. well he

  949. looks around

  950. it's quite

  951. late

  952. so he

  953. goes home

  954. goes to

  955. bat and

  956. it's late

  957. what did

  958. Jesus do

  959. when he

  960. gets to

  961. the temple

  962. he does

  963. nothing

  964. at all

  965. but he

  966. looks around

  967. and we've

  968. got this

  969. great

  970. anticlimax

  971. and Mark's

  972. account is

  973. not worthy

  974. because of

  975. what didn't

  976. happen

  977. the whole

  978. scene

  979. of the

  980. king

  981. coming to

  982. his temple

  983. well

  984. ends in

  985. nothing

  986. the

  987. climax

  988. of course

  989. comes the

  990. next day

  991. doesn't it

  992. the next

  993. day

  994. of

  995. the

  996. week

  997. Jesus

  998. returns

  999. to the

  1000. temple

  1001. and those

  1002. who are

  1003. there

  1004. and not

  1005. only just

  1006. he says

  1007. ride

  1008. into Jerusalem

  1009. on this

  1010. lonely

  1011. donkey

  1012. one of the

  1013. first things

  1014. he does

  1015. when he gets

  1016. off the

  1017. donkey

  1018. is he

  1019. purifies

  1020. the palace

  1021. doesn't

  1022. he

  1023. the palace

  1024. of Caesar

  1025. of injustice

  1026. but he

  1027. doesn't do

  1028. that but he

  1029. cleanses the

  1030. temple

  1031. he cleanses

  1032. the temple

  1033. of God

  1034. of irreverence

  1035. and a

  1036. spiritual

  1037. presumption

  1038. Jesus

  1039. comes to

  1040. town

  1041. to claim

  1042. his capital

  1043. city

  1044. and his

  1045. temple

  1046. but he

  1047. does it

  1048. in a way

  1049. that is

  1050. incomprehensible

  1051. and is

  1052. even offensive

  1053. to the people

  1054. of God

  1055. at this

  1056. time

  1057. and frankly

  1058. it is

  1059. incomprehensible

  1060. and offensive

  1061. to most people

  1062. of our

  1063. time

  1064. the Jews

  1065. would not

  1066. accept

  1067. the notion

  1068. of a

  1069. saviour

  1070. they would

  1071. not accept

  1072. his role

  1073. as a

  1074. messiah

  1075. who would

  1076. be a

  1077. saviour

  1078. they want

  1079. a military

  1080. messiah

  1081. don't they

  1082. but he

  1083. refuses

  1084. to identify

  1085. himself

  1086. as a

  1087. worldly

  1088. conqueror

  1089. indeed

  1090. he sees

  1091. himself

  1092. as

  1093. God's

  1094. king

  1095. who will

  1096. reign in

  1097. glory and

  1098. peace

  1099. but only

  1100. after he

  1101. has suffered

  1102. in loneliness

  1103. and sorrow

  1104. and affliction

  1105. and that

  1106. is how

  1107. Jesus

  1108. in God's

  1109. own

  1110. divine

  1111. plan

  1112. would

  1113. conquer

  1114. the world

  1115. but this

  1116. was

  1117. and is

  1118. Israel's

  1119. promised

  1120. king

  1121. and yet

  1122. as the

  1123. gospel

  1124. unfolds

  1125. to us

  1126. the only

  1127. anointing

  1128. that this

  1129. king

  1130. would receive

  1131. was an

  1132. anointing

  1133. for burial

  1134. and the

  1135. only crown

  1136. that this

  1137. king would

  1138. wear would

  1139. be a

  1140. crown of

  1141. thorns

  1142. and the

  1143. only robe

  1144. that he

  1145. would wear

  1146. is a

  1147. robe

  1148. adorned

  1149. with

  1150. mockery

  1151. and thus

  1152. anointed

  1153. and robed

  1154. and crowned

  1155. before his

  1156. people

  1157. he is

  1158. presented

  1159. as their

  1160. king

  1161. behold your

  1162. king

  1163. they were

  1164. told

  1165. and the

  1166. same

  1167. crowd

  1168. that blessed

  1169. his name

  1170. and raised

  1171. high his

  1172. name

  1173. was the

  1174. same

  1175. crowd

  1176. that

  1177. shouted

  1178. crucify him

  1179. crucify him

  1180. we have

  1181. no king

  1182. we have

  1183. no king

  1184. but Caesar

  1185. they say

  1186. so today

  1187. is Palm

  1188. Sunday

  1189. what do

  1190. you make

  1191. of Palm

  1192. Sunday

  1193. what does

  1194. Mark make

  1195. of Palm

  1196. Sunday

  1197. well here

  1198. is what

  1199. I make

  1200. of what

  1201. Mark makes

  1202. of Palm

  1203. Sunday

  1204. I think

  1205. most people

  1206. in our

  1207. culture

  1208. most people

  1209. have some

  1210. kind of

  1211. admiration

  1212. for Jesus

  1213. they

  1214. perhaps

  1215. admire him

  1216. for his

  1217. fearless

  1218. criticism

  1219. on the

  1220. establishment

  1221. that's what

  1222. people think

  1223. of him

  1224. they champion

  1225. his cause

  1226. of the

  1227. poor

  1228. that Jesus

  1229. was a

  1230. friend of

  1231. outcasts

  1232. of society

  1233. I think

  1234. the Muslim

  1235. Imam

  1236. when we

  1237. had the

  1238. meeting

  1239. with the

  1240. mosque

  1241. the Muslim

  1242. Imam

  1243. began

  1244. by saying

  1245. how much

  1246. he appreciated

  1247. Jesus

  1248. how much

  1249. he says

  1250. he loved

  1251. Jesus

  1252. he loved

  1253. him for

  1254. his compassion

  1255. for the

  1256. despised

  1257. and rejected

  1258. they love

  1259. his moral

  1260. teaching

  1261. love your

  1262. neighbour

  1263. they admire

  1264. him for

  1265. the fact

  1266. that Jesus

  1267. practised

  1268. what he

  1269. preached

  1270. and to

  1271. add to

  1272. this list

  1273. people

  1274. admire

  1275. Jesus

  1276. because

  1277. they

  1278. see

  1279. that he

  1280. is

  1281. genuinely

  1282. humble

  1283. his

  1284. washing

  1285. of the

  1286. disciples

  1287. feet

  1288. even

  1289. his

  1290. riding

  1291. into

  1292. town

  1293. on

  1294. donkey

  1295. he is

  1296. humble

  1297. he is

  1298. approachable

  1299. his character

  1300. is commendable

  1301. but however

  1302. one might

  1303. admire Jesus

  1304. for his

  1305. humble actions

  1306. and attitude

  1307. you've still

  1308. got to come

  1309. to grips

  1310. with certain

  1311. things he

  1312. said

  1313. and certain

  1314. things he

  1315. did

  1316. there are

  1317. claims

  1318. and there

  1319. are actions

  1320. that seem

  1321. to be quite

  1322. the opposite

  1323. of humility

  1324. there are

  1325. claims and

  1326. actions

  1327. that are

  1328. extraordinarily

  1329. audacious

  1330. by Jesus

  1331. so do you

  1332. know what

  1333. surprises me

  1334. about

  1335. Luke

  1336. Mark 11

    Mark 11:1–11

  1337. verses 1

  1338. to 11

  1339. it's not

  1340. actually

  1341. Jesus'

  1342. humility

  1343. but it's

  1344. self-promotion

  1345. and Jesus'

  1346. self-promotion

  1347. of his

  1348. humility

  1349. do you see

  1350. that paradox

  1351. I don't know

  1352. what else to

  1353. call it

  1354. Jesus

  1355. self-promotes

  1356. his own

  1357. humility

  1358. his actions

  1359. here

  1360. they are

  1361. all

  1362. premeditated

  1363. he rides

  1364. into town

  1365. and in the

  1366. way that

  1367. he rode

  1368. into town

  1369. he receives

  1370. the praise

  1371. he received

  1372. it

  1373. and there's

  1374. no personal

  1375. protest

  1376. is there

  1377. there's no

  1378. Jesus saying

  1379. no no no

  1380. who me

  1381. not me

  1382. no stop

  1383. that

  1384. he's announced

  1385. into the world

  1386. the king has

  1387. come

  1388. indeed he is

  1389. the son of

  1390. David

  1391. so the irony

  1392. of the triumphal

  1393. entry

  1394. if you will

  1395. is our lord's

  1396. promotion

  1397. or our lord's

  1398. publication

  1399. of his

  1400. humble

  1401. reign

  1402. it's the

  1403. audacity

  1404. of his

  1405. intentionality

  1406. no matter how

  1407. you look at it

  1408. by mounting that

  1409. particular animal

  1410. by riding into

  1411. Jerusalem on it

  1412. Jesus is making

  1413. a very bold

  1414. statement

  1415. he is claiming

  1416. to be the

  1417. messiah

  1418. he is claiming

  1419. to be the

  1420. fulfilment of

  1421. Zechariah's

  1422. prophecy

  1423. and for those

  1424. who do not want

  1425. to accept his

  1426. claim and submit

  1427. to it

  1428. you may be

  1429. tempted to

  1430. brush this

  1431. off

  1432. this particular

  1433. incident off

  1434. as an oversight

  1435. but he's a

  1436. good and

  1437. otherwise humble

  1438. teacher from

  1439. Nazareth

  1440. and yet actually

  1441. as you go

  1442. through the

  1443. gospels

  1444. you can't do

  1445. that

  1446. because this

  1447. pattern

  1448. however you

  1449. want to call it

  1450. of self

  1451. promotion

  1452. is everywhere

  1453. in the

  1454. gospels

  1455. he said

  1456. for example

  1457. I am the

  1458. bread of

  1459. life

  1460. whoever

  1461. comes to

  1462. me

  1463. shall

  1464. never

  1465. hang

  1466. there

  1467. whoever

  1468. believes in

  1469. me

  1470. will have

  1471. thirst

  1472. really

  1473. who talks

  1474. like that

  1475. can you

  1476. imagine if

  1477. the pope

  1478. went out

  1479. onto his

  1480. balcony

  1481. and said

  1482. I am

  1483. the bread

  1484. of life

  1485. it's

  1486. audacious

  1487. isn't it

  1488. Jesus said

  1489. I am

  1490. the light

  1491. of the

  1492. world

  1493. whoever

  1494. follows

  1495. me

  1496. will not

  1497. walk

  1498. in

  1499. darkness

  1500. but they

  1501. will have

  1502. the light

  1503. of life

  1504. what audacity

  1505. to say

  1506. that the

  1507. world

  1508. is in

  1509. the dark

  1510. and that

  1511. he alone

  1512. is the

  1513. light

  1514. and that

  1515. one must

  1516. follow him

  1517. to get

  1518. out of

  1519. the darkness

  1520. even the

  1521. Dalai

  1522. Lama

  1523. would say

  1524. that

  1525. would he

  1526. well if

  1527. the Dalai

  1528. Lama

  1529. does say

  1530. and people

  1531. love the

  1532. Dalai

  1533. Lama

  1534. don't they

  1535. are

  1536. media

  1537. love the

  1538. Dalai

  1539. Lama

  1540. even if

  1541. he said

  1542. that

  1543. he'd get

  1544. into trouble

  1545. they'd

  1546. cheer him

  1547. up

  1548. Jesus said

  1549. I am the

  1550. resurrection

  1551. and the

  1552. life

  1553. whoever

  1554. believes in

  1555. me

  1556. though he

  1557. die

  1558. yet he

  1559. shall

  1560. live

  1561. would Bill

  1562. Gates

  1563. say that

  1564. Billy

  1565. Graham

  1566. say that

  1567. would Bill

  1568. Clinton

  1569. say that

  1570. would Nelson

  1571. Mandela

  1572. have made

  1573. such a

  1574. claim

  1575. it's one

  1576. thing for a

  1577. man to

  1578. say isn't

  1579. it that we

  1580. are to love

  1581. the Lord

  1582. our God

  1583. with all

  1584. our soul

  1585. and mind

  1586. and strength

  1587. but it's

  1588. quite another

  1589. thing to say

  1590. whoever loves

  1591. their mother

  1592. and father

  1593. more than

  1594. me is not

  1595. worthy of

  1596. me

  1597. whoever

  1598. loves his

  1599. son or

  1600. daughter more

  1601. than me

  1602. is not

  1603. worthy of

  1604. me

  1605. even Muhammad

  1606. Ali

  1607. would not get

  1608. away with

  1609. saying that

  1610. we usually

  1611. don't we

  1612. in our

  1613. culture

  1614. we don't

  1615. like people

  1616. who talk

  1617. that much

  1618. about themselves

  1619. we are

  1620. repelled by

  1621. someone who

  1622. demands our

  1623. love or

  1624. obedience or

  1625. total allegiance

  1626. and yet what

  1627. is it that

  1628. makes Jesus

  1629. not only

  1630. likeable but

  1631. also believable

  1632. that is why

  1633. this is so

  1634. remarkable

  1635. perhaps nothing

  1636. is so remarkable

  1637. about Jesus

  1638. than the fact

  1639. that he

  1640. advanced himself

  1641. and I am

  1642. the object

  1643. of faith

  1644. and love

  1645. and obedience

  1646. and yet as

  1647. you read

  1648. Jesus'

  1649. life

  1650. he comes

  1651. across as

  1652. the most

  1653. humble man

  1654. trying to

  1655. walk on the

  1656. face of the

  1657. earth

  1658. it's the

  1659. paradox of

  1660. Jesus isn't

  1661. it

  1662. he covers

  1663. himself with

  1664. disturbing

  1665. claims

  1666. disturbing

  1667. claims because

  1668. they are so

  1669. self focused

  1670. and yet as

  1671. we look at

  1672. him we see

  1673. in him

  1674. someone who

  1675. is clothed

  1676. in utter

  1677. humility

  1678. it's a

  1679. profound

  1680. paradox

  1681. and we see

  1682. it in this

  1683. passage

  1684. and it's one

  1685. of those things

  1686. that you could

  1687. easily not find

  1688. that you would

  1689. not notice

  1690. unless you pay

  1691. careful attention

  1692. that Jesus

  1693. arranges the

  1694. whole scene

  1695. here

  1696. it's not so

  1697. clear

  1698. he determines

  1699. every detail

  1700. of what will

  1701. happen

  1702. he decides to

  1703. ride slightly

  1704. above the

  1705. crowd into

  1706. Jerusalem on

  1707. a cult

  1708. it's an

  1709. action that's

  1710. little different

  1711. from the

  1712. start of his

  1713. ministry

  1714. in Luke's

  1715. gospel

  1716. he goes to

  1717. the temple

  1718. and he

  1719. takes up the

  1720. scroll of the

  1721. synagogue

  1722. he goes to

  1723. the synagogue

  1724. and he

  1725. reads it

  1726. and he sits

  1727. down to

  1728. teach

  1729. and then he

  1730. expounds it

  1731. saying in

  1732. essence

  1733. if you want

  1734. to know what

  1735. the prophet

  1736. is saying

  1737. he was writing

  1738. about me

  1739. and Jesus

  1740. wrote in

  1741. Jerusalem

  1742. that Palm

  1743. Sunday

  1744. and he

  1745. announces

  1746. that he

  1747. is Israel's

  1748. Messiah

  1749. and had

  1750. arrived

  1751. just as

  1752. that Zechariah

  1753. said he

  1754. would

  1755. and so

  1756. by mounting

  1757. on this

  1758. donkey

  1759. Jesus

  1760. says if

  1761. you want

  1762. to know

  1763. to whom

  1764. the prophet

  1765. was referring

  1766. to he's

  1767. writing about

  1768. me

  1769. and that is

  1770. the paradox

  1771. of Jesus

  1772. and it is

  1773. mind-moving

  1774. and it's one

  1775. of the reasons

  1776. I'm a Christian

  1777. it's one of the

  1778. reasons I hope

  1779. you are a Christian

  1780. because Christianity

  1781. is scripturally

  1782. reasonable

  1783. that is

  1784. as I test

  1785. the words

  1786. and the actions

  1787. of Jesus

  1788. against the

  1789. Old Testament

  1790. the prophecies

  1791. fit

  1792. what he does

  1793. fits with the

  1794. prophecies

  1795. of the Old Testament

  1796. they are the

  1797. right match

  1798. Jesus fulfills

  1799. the scriptures

  1800. and another reason

  1801. I'm a Christian

  1802. and I hope you

  1803. are a Christian

  1804. is because I

  1805. love this paradox

  1806. the wonderful

  1807. alluring paradox

  1808. of Jesus

  1809. that two truths

  1810. that seem to be

  1811. against each other

  1812. are true

  1813. in the person

  1814. of Jesus

  1815. the audacity

  1816. of his

  1817. intentionality

  1818. for the Son

  1819. of God

  1820. to intentionally

  1821. ride on a donkey

  1822. and it's these

  1823. two distinct

  1824. features

  1825. scripture

  1826. reasonableness

  1827. and the paradox

  1828. of Jesus

1829. and so I want us

  1830. all to recognise

  1831. afresh

  1832. and respond

  1833. to his day

  1834. with our minds

  1835. hopefully filled

  1836. with a deeper

  1837. understanding of

  1838. part of Sunday

  1839. and hopefully

  1840. our hearts

  1841. touched afresh

  1842. with the person

  1843. of Jesus

  1844. he knew who

  1845. he was

  1846. and he knew

  1847. what he was

  1848. doing

  1849. and he knew

  1850. where he was

  1851. going

  1852. and so we can

  1853. join in the crowd

  1854. can't we

  1855. echoing

  1856. and expanding

  1857. their voice

  1858. from Psalm 118

  1859. that we saw

  1860. earlier

  1861. Hosanna

  1862. Hosanna

  1863. to the Son

  1864. of David

  1865. save us

  1866. save us

  1867. blessed is he

  1868. who comes

  1869. in the name

  1870. of the Lord

  1871. blessed is the

  1872. kingdom of our

  1873. Father David

  1874. Hosanna

  1875. in the highest

  1876. let's pray

  1877. God
