  1. Steak and chips, strawberries and cream, Batman and Superman.

  2. ! Some things in life just belong together.

  3. ! Growing up, I remember my granddad laughing aloud, watching Laurel and Hardy. Do you remember them?

  4. ! If you're too young, then your homework is to YouTube them later. Comedy gold.

  5. The hapless pair were always getting into trouble, but it was impossible to imagine one without the other.

  6. Psalm 126 is different. It's full of things we don't normally see together. Unlikely duos.

  7. In this song, there is laughter and longing, triumph and tears, praise and pain.

  8. Such apparent contradictions are normal for believers. When the Apostle Paul summed up his ministry,

  9. he said he was sorrowful, yet always rejoicing. And that is the tone of this psalm.

  10. It's a song that introduces us to the tensions of the Christian life.

  11. It's a song for when life is good, and a song for when life is bad.

  12. It's a song we could sing in the major and the minor key at exactly the same time.

  13. Just picture the 6'6", 18 stone rugby player belting out the national anthem on his debut,

  14. bursting with pride, with tears streaming down his face.

  15. That is what this psalm feels like.

  16. Your Bible might highlight that it's one of the psalms of ascent.

  17. And that makes it one of a special collection,

  18. which was sung by the Israelites as they travelled to Jerusalem.

  19. They made the journey several times a year.

  20. And like many families, they had songs for the road.

  21. Like many of us who have CDs that skip because they've been played so often,

  22. God's people were no different.

  23. Psalms 120 to 134 were always on repeat for the Israelites.

  24. They never stopped singing this album of 15 songs.

  25. It reminded them that they were pilgrims on their way to glory.

  26. And the lyrics have been popular ever since.

  27. One writer calls them an old dog-eared songbook that Christians keep rediscovering.

  28. Psalm 126 is a song from that book.

  29. You may have been a believer for decades.

  30. You may have just got going on the Christian way.

  31. You may be examining it from a distance.

  32. But whoever you are, this is a song for you.

  33. Notice, first of all, in verses 1 to 3,

  34. the rescue Christians celebrate.

  35. The rescue Christians celebrate.

  36. The psalm begins with joyful praise.

  37. The writer looks back to a time when God's people experienced his rescue

  38. in a dramatic, powerful, wonderful way.

  39. When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion,

  40. we were like those who dream.

  41. Then our mouth was filled with laughter,

  42. and our tongue with shouts of joy.

  43. It was an experience that almost seemed too good to be true.

  44. They could hardly believe it.

  45. God's rescue made them feel like they were walking on air.

  46. It left them in a kind of trance-like state.

  47. Life was like a dream.

  48. It's not 100% clear what event the psalmist was referring to.

  49. It may have been the exodus.

  50. It may have been the return from exile.

  51. It may have been another dramatic victory.

  52. And in one sense, it doesn't really matter.

  53. Whatever it was, it had had a dramatic effect on God's people.

  54. Just look at the way it impacted their emotions.

  55. This great big rescue resulted in laughter and singing and joy.

  56. There was celebration.

  57. Their chains fell off.

  58. Their hearts were free.

  59. They had lived with huge burdens on their backs.

  60. But now those burdens had been lifted.

  61. They felt 10 feet tall.

  62. They were so happy that they thought their hearts would explode.

  63. One of the things I've loved about being at IPC is saying a creed together each week.

  64. I've got a really good friend who used to go to a church that said the Apostles' Creed at each service.

  65. And my friend said there was one line in the creed that used to make his heart skip a beat.

  66. He said there was one line in the creed that used to make his heart skip a beat.

  67. I believe in the forgiveness of sins.

  68. He told me that when he said that every single week with brothers and sisters, it made him want to punch the air.

  69. It reminded him that God was gracious.

  70. That however much he'd slipped or stumbled over the past seven days, his guilt had been atoned for.

  71. I believe in the forgiveness of sins.

  72. Jesus had died for him.

  73. And it filled him with joy.

  74. God's people often feel like that.

  75. They know what it's like to feel huge relief at his rescue.

  76. Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven.

  77. That is why they sing.

  78. God has delivered us from the dominion of darkness, says Paul.

  79. And brought us into the kingdom of the son he loves.

  80. In whom we have redemption.

  81. The forgiveness of sins.

  82. So many of the stories that we love have echoes of this great redemption.

  83. Think of Jean Valjean in Les Mis.

  84. Or Andy the Frame in the Shawshank Redemption.

  85. The reason we love those films is because rescue like that is good and true and beautiful.

  86. To see somebody experience deliverance is one of the most wonderful things in the world.

  87. When miners escape.

  88. When hostages are freed.

  89. When children are pulled from the rubble.

  90. When you see that.

  91. When you experience that.

  92. You want to share it with others.

  93. You tweet.

  94. You text.

  95. You talk about it.

  96. And it's the same with this psalm.

  97. The restoration.

  98. The rescue.

  99. Of God's people was not.

  100. Some kind of private event.

  101. No.

  102. It was a public rescue.

  103. Do you see that in verse 2?

  104. Then they said among the nations.

  105. The Lord has done great things for them.

  106. People were looking on.

  107. The Lord has done great things for them.

  108. The Lord has done great things for us.

  109. We are glad.

  110. See it wasn't enough.

  111. For Israel to experience this rescue on their own.

  112. It had a Christmas feel.

  113. Good news.

  114. Of great joy for all people.

  115. See tonight.

  116. Christians.

  117. We are people who celebrate.

  118. What God has done.

  119. Christians are not afraid of emotion.

  120. Sometimes we think the Christian life is just about thinking.

  121. But feelings matter too.

  122. God wants to win the hearts and minds of his people.

  123. Now this is not to say that we all need to become extroverts.

  124. Or South Americans.

  125. Carlos and Clara here.

  126. I don't know if I see them.

  127. But stuffy.

  128. Buttoned up religion.

  129. Is a million miles away.

  130. From the Christianity of the New Testament.

  131. The journalist.

  132. H.L. Mencken.

  133. Once said.

  134. There was.

  135. A kind of.

  136. Super.

  137. Uber.

  138. Religious person.

  139. Whose greatest.

  140. I love this.

  141. Whose greatest.

  142. Most haunting fear.

  143. Was that someone.

  144. Somewhere was enjoying themselves.

  145. It can never be so with us.

  146. We have.

  147. A father.

  148. Who sprints.

  149. After prodigals.

  150. A father.

  151. Who kills.

  152. The fattened calf.

  153. Puts a ring on her finger.

  154. A cloak.

  155. Around her neck.

  156. And says.

  157. Let's have a party.

  158. Christians.

  159. Christians.

  160. Are joyful.

  161. Attractive people.

  162. They love.

  163. To remember.

  164. God's rescue.

  165. They know.

  166. From personal experience.

  167. That Jesus.

  168. Their savior.

  169. Has been.

  170. Very.

  171. Very.

  172. Kind.

  173. To them.

  174. They have a kind of.

  175. I can hardly believe.

  176. I'm a Christian.

  177. Attitude.

  178. They're stunned.

  179. That Jesus.

  180. Would love them.

  181. And give himself.

  182. In their place.

  183. And can it be.

  184. That I should gain.

  185. An interest.

  186. In the savior's blood.

  187. Died he for me.

  188. Who caused his pain.

  189. For me.

  190. Who him to death pursued.

  191. Amazing love.

  192. How can it be.

  193. That thou my God.

  194. Should die for me.

  195. See.

  196. It's so easy.

  197. To forget.

  198. So easy.

  199. To become.

  200. Negative.

  201. So easy.

  202. To become cynical.

  203. Just slowly.

  204. Over time.

  205. What has happened.

  206. To all your joy.

  207. Paul asked.

  208. The religious Galatians.

  209. So easy.

  210. To lose.

  211. Maybe tonight.

  212. You're someone.

  213. Who's.

  214. Just got used.

  215. To disappointment.

  216. Who's been let down.

  217. So many times.

  218. That you think.

  219. Somehow.

  220. Life with God.

  221. Is going to turn out.

  222. The same.

  223. Maybe you've been beaten up.

  224. By painful circumstances.

  225. Is your heart shrinking.

  226. Have you forgotten.

  227. That the Bible ends.

  228. With the ultimate.

  229. Happily ever after.

  230. A day of such glory.

  231. And wonder.

  232. That it will be almost impossible.

  233. To take in.

  234. To sin.

  235. Christians are people with more reason to laugh and sing

  236. than anyone else in the world

  237. they glory in God's rescue

  238. they love him for his cross

  239. joy is the serious business of heaven

  240. said Lewis

  241. joy is the gigantic secret of the Christian

  242. said Chesterton

  243. joy in God

  244. joy in his goodness

  245. and faithfulness

  246. and love

  247. the rescue Christians celebrate

  248. secondly the renewal

  249. Christians crave

  250. the renewal

  251. Christians crave

  252. verses 4 to 6

  253. as I was preparing this sermon

  254. there was one phrase from Abraham Lincoln's

  255. Gettysburg address

  256. that I couldn't get out of my head

  257. can you tell I'm training as a history teacher

  258. what a geek

  259. address is one of the most revered speeches of all time

  260. America which had been conceived in liberty

  261. was engaged in a great civil war

  262. the nation was in danger of the nation

  263. and Lincoln said that what was needed was a new birth of freedom

  264. the psalmist knew that feeling

  265. look at his cry in verse 4

  266. restore our fortunes

  267. oh lord

  268. one translation puts it like this

  269. and now God do it again

  270. bring rain

  271. to our drought stricken lives

  272. see the psalmist

  273. see the psalmist knew

  274. what it was like

  275. to long

  276. for God's renewal

  277. even after he had experienced

  278. God's rescue

  279. he was a real believer

  280. he had so much

  281. to give thanks for

  282. but there was still

  283. this tension in his life

  284. and he prays

  285. he asks God

  286. to restore

  287. the fortunes

  288. of his people

  289. isn't it just so true

  290. to life

  291. so true

  292. to real Christian experience

  293. great moments

  294. of deliverance

  295. are so often followed

  296. by times of

  297. great difficulty

  298. even after God has

  299. taken us out of the pit

  300. and put a new song

  301. in our mouth

  302. well there can still be

  303. problems to face

  304. as we move forward

  305. even when my sins

  306. have been forgiven

  307. and my citizenship

  308. is in heaven

  309. life can still be hard

  310. this was true

  311. after the return

  312. from exile

  313. God's people

  314. came back to the land

  315. but the book of Haggai

  316. if you read it

  317. it makes it clear

  318. that there was still

  319. real apathy

  320. and indifference

  321. amongst the Israelites

  322. for a considerable

  323. amount of time

  324. life with God

  325. well it seemed

  326. extremely low key

  327. and every new

  328. Christian

  329. experiences this

  330. after the honeymoon

  331. period

  332. they quickly discover

  333. that their new

  334. relationship with Jesus

  335. doesn't keep them

  336. from the troubles

  337. of living

  338. in a broken world

  339. they haven't been

  340. teleported

  341. to the new creation

  342. they still live with

  343. the fallout

  344. from the fall

  345. there can be much

  346. that makes them feel

  347. very weak

  348. and tearful

  349. and fearful

  350. life can feel

  351. more like a desert

  352. than a garden

  353. they start to long

  354. for renewal

  355. in their life

  356. and in the life

  357. of God's people

  358. this longing

  359. for renewal

  360. is one of the

  361. hallmarks

  362. of genuine faith

  363. one of the signs

  364. that we are converted

  365. is that we start

  366. to care

  367. about the fortunes

  368. of Zion

  369. in bible language

  370. Zion is

  371. simply shorthand

  372. for the people

  373. of God

  374. and after we trust

  375. in Jesus

  376. the state

  377. of his church

  378. it starts

  379. to become

  380. important to us

  381. we find ourselves

  382. praying about things

  383. we would never

  384. have prayed about

  385. before

  386. we don't just

  387. want restoration

  388. for ourselves

  389. no we long

  390. for the restoration

  391. of God's people

  392. the psalmist

  393. gives us

  394. two pictures

  395. to show us

  396. what this

  397. restoration

  398. this renewal

  399. looks like

  400. streams in a desert

  401. and sheaves

  402. at a harvest

  403. streams in a desert

  404. and sheaves

  405. at a harvest

  406. the commentators

  407. point out

  408. that one of these

  409. things is quick

  410. but the other

  411. is slow

  412. the Negev

  413. which is mentioned

  414. in verse 4

  415. was a huge

  416. desert

  417. with ditches

  418. cut into the

  419. ground

  420. for most of the

  421. year the soil

  422. was baked

  423. by the sun

  424. but a sudden

  425. rain

  426. could make it

  427. teem with life

  428. almost overnight

  429. and sometimes

  430. God works

  431. like that

  432. his renewal

  433. comes suddenly

  434. in a way that

  435. kind of takes

  436. our breath away

  437. think of

  438. some of the

  439. great revivals

  440. in church history

  441. or maybe

  442. seasons of growth

  443. in your own

  444. Christian life

  445. maybe a camp

  446. or a move

  447. or a new

  448. beginning

  449. that just

  450. opens you up

  451. to God

  452. in a fresh

  453. way

  454. God

  455. often

  456. works

  457. like that

  458. but it's

  459. not

  460. the only

  461. way

  462. is it

  463. do you see

  464. the second

  465. illustration

  466. the psalmist

  467. says

  468. that renewal

  469. also comes

  470. like a

  471. harvest

  472. what is

  473. rule

  474. 101

  475. with the

  476. harvest

  477. it takes

  478. time

  479. psalmist

  480. says

  481. something

  482. very moving

  483. about it

  484. he says

  485. the people

  486. who reap

  487. are the

  488. people who

  489. weep

  490. verse 5

  491. those who

  492. sow in tears

  493. shall reap

  494. with shouts

  495. of joy

  496. he who goes

  497. out weeping

  498. bearing the

  499. seed for

  500. sowing

  501. shall come

  502. home with

  503. joy

  504. bringing his

  505. sheaves

  506. with him

  507. it's a

  508. beautiful

  509. picture

  510. isn't it

  511. the psalmist

  512. knows

  513. that joy

  514. and tears

  515. go side

  516. by side

  517. in the

  518. life of

  519. faith

  520. they're

  521. friends

  522. they're

  523. twins

  524. in the

  525. life of

  526. believers

  527. the psalmist

  528. knows

  529. there are

  530. plenty

  531. reasons

  532. in this

  533. world

  534. for

  535. Christians

  536. to cry

  537. isn't that

  538. right

  539. we are

  540. not

  541. immune

  542. from sorrow

  543. we cry

  544. when we

  545. suffer

  546. we cry

  547. when we

  548. sin

  549. we cry

  550. when we're

  551. sick

  552. Christians

  553. cry

  554. when relationships

  555. break down

  556. they cry

  557. for loved ones

  558. who don't

  559. know the

  560. Lord

  561. they cry

  562. when longed

  563. for children

  564. die

  565. and God

  566. knows

  567. and sees

  568. and understands

  569. it all

  570. elsewhere

  571. in the

  572. psalms

  573. we're told

  574. that he

  575. stores

  576. all our

  577. tears

  578. in a

  579. bottle

  580. that every

  581. single one

  582. of them

  583. is precious

  584. to him

  585. like

  586. perfume

  587. that may

  588. be all

  589. you need

  590. to hear

  591. tonight

  592. there are

  593. so many

  594. times when

  595. our Christian

  596. service feels

  597. weak and

  598. small

  599. we feel

  600. like we're

  601. sowing

  602. tears

  603. sometimes

  604. we wonder

  605. if we've

  606. ever achieved

  607. anything at

  608. all

  609. for Jesus

  610. do you ever

  611. feel like

  612. that

  613. I think

  614. being a

  615. Christian in

  616. Britain today

  617. is to live

  618. in a day

  619. of small

  620. things

  621. and slow

  622. progress

  623. so think

  624. of a

  625. Christian

  626. faithfully

  627. attending

  628. a church

  629. meeting

  630. after a

  631. long

  632. draining

  633. day

  634. at work

  635. think of

  636. a parent

  637. pointing

  638. their

  639. children

  640. to

  641. Jesus

  642. and

  643. saying

  644. a

  645. simple

  646. prayer

  647. before

  648. bedtime

  649. think

  650. of a

  651. Christian

  652. reaching

  653. out to

  654. a

  655. colleague

  656. at

  657. work

  658. who's

  659. going

  660. through

  661. a

  662. hard

  663. time

  664. the

  665. card

  666. sent

  667. to

  668. encourage

  669. a

  670. friend

  671. the

  672. arm

  673. on

  674. the

  675. shoulder

  676. the

  677. verse

  678. sent

  679. by

  680. text

  681. hundreds

  682. of

  683. small

  684. seemingly

  685. insignificant

  686. moments

  687. but

  688. all

  689. of

  690. them

  691. part

  692. of

  693. the

  694. sowing

  695. that

  696. comes

  697. before

  698. an

  699. incredible

  700. harvest

  701. see the

  702. imagery at

  703. the end

  704. is so

  705. joyful

  706. isn't it

  707. it's all

  708. here to

  709. say

  710. none

  711. of your

  712. Christian

  713. service

  714. is ever

  715. in vain

  716. none

  717. of it

  718. there

  719. will be

  720. a harvest

  721. and

  722. God

  723. never

  724. wastes

  725. pain

  726. each

  727. strand

  728. of sorrow

  729. has a

  730. place

  731. within

  732. his

  733. tapestry

  734. of

  735. grace

  736. some

  737. of the

  738. most

  739. joyful

  740. people

  741. I know

  742. are

  743. people

  744. who

  745. have

  746. endured

  747. incredible

  748. suffering

  749. when I

  750. read

  751. this

  752. psalm

  753. I

  754. thought

  755. of

  756. Naomi

  757. and I

  758. thought

  759. of

  760. Job

  761. both

  762. of them

  763. experienced

  764. God's

  765. renewal

  766. didn't

  767. they

  768. after

  769. times

  770. of

  771. great

  772. hardship

  773. and

  774. then I

  775. thought

  776. of

  777. two

  778. other

  779. people

  780. two

  781. living

  782. examples

  783. of

  784. psalm

  785. 126

  786. one

  787. is a

  788. woman

  789. from the

  790. church

  791. that I

  792. grew up

  793. in

  794. on

  795. the

  796. isle

  797. of

  798. sky

  799. the

  800. phrase

  801. a

  802. breath

  803. of

  804. fresh

  805. air

  806. was

  807. invented

  808. for

  809. her

  810. she

  811. was

  812. one

  813. of

  814. those

  815. people

  816. that

  817. you

  818. heard

  819. before

  820. you

  821. saw

  822. and

  823. her

  824. English

  825. accent

  826. and

  827. infectious

  828. laugh

  829. echoed

  830. round

  831. the

  832. church

  833. building

  834. every

  835. week

  836. we

  837. love

  838. to go

  839. to her

  840. big

  841. old

  842. falling

  843. down

  844. rambling

  845. house

  846. for

  847. Sunday

  848. lunch

  849. when I

  850. saw her

  851. recently

  852. she was

  853. exactly

  854. the

  855. same

  856. hair

  857. that

  858. was

  859. blonde

  860. is

  861. now

  862. grey

  863. but

  864. she

  865. still

  866. has

  867. an

  868. incredible

  869. smile

  870. she

  871. has

  872. endured

  873. a lot

  874. her

  875. husband

  876. and

  877. two

  878. of

  879. her

  880. grown

  881. up

  882. children

  883. some

  884. of

  885. the

  886. healthiest

  887. outdoor

  888. loving

  889. people

  890. you

  891. could

  892. ever

  893. imagine

  894. are

  895. now

  896. living

  897. with

  898. a

  899. debilitating

  900. genetic

  901. disease

  902. their

  903. muscles

  904. just

  905. wasting

  906. away

  907. life

  908. is

  909. very

  910. hard

  911. but

  912. she

  913. is

  914. still

  915. full

  916. of

  917. joy

  918. still

  919. encouraging

  920. others

  921. still

  922. active

  923. in her

  924. church

  925. still

  926. looking

  927. to the

  928. future

  929. the

  930. other

  931. is the

  932. man

  933. who

  934. led

  935. camps

  936. I

  937. attended

  938. as

  939. a

  940. teenager

  941. his

  942. daughter

  943. a

  944. student

  945. at

  946. Aberdeen

  947. University

  948. went

  949. missing

  950. in

  951. India

  952. over

  953. 30

  954. years

  955. ago

  956. and

  957. she

  958. has

  959. never

  960. been

  961. found

  962. it

  963. is

  964. almost

  965. impossible

  966. to

  967. try

  968. and

  969. imagine

  970. suffering

  971. like

  972. that

  973. it

  974. would

  975. be

  976. no

  977. surprise

  978. if

  979. he

  980. had

  981. become

  982. consumed

  983. with

  984. bitterness

  985. but

  986. he's

  987. not

  988. he has

  989. eyes

  990. that

  991. have

  992. shed

  993. many

  994. tears

  995. but

  996. they

  997. still

  998. twinkle

  999. with

  1000. joy

  1001. as

  1002. someone

  1003. said

  1004. to me

  1005. recently

  1006. love

  1007. just

  1008. shines

  1009. out

  1010. of

  1011. him

  1012. that's

  1013. what I

  1014. want to

  1015. be like

  1016. when I

  1017. grow up

  1018. don't

  1019. you

  1020. young

  1021. people

  1022. children

  1023. let me

  1024. tell you

  1025. a secret

  1026. I've

  1027. not been

  1028. here

  1029. long

  1030. but I

  1031. know

  1032. that this

  1033. church

  1034. is full

  1035. of people

  1036. like that

  1037. people who

  1038. have kept

  1039. going as

  1040. Christians

  1041. despite

  1042. lots of

  1043. suffering

  1044. people who

  1045. have kept

  1046. following

  1047. Jesus

  1048. after big

  1049. changes

  1050. or illness

  1051. or after

  1052. someone they

  1053. love very

  1054. much

  1055. died

  1056. people like

  1057. that

  1058. people like

  1059. that are

  1060. my heroes

  1061. and I

  1062. hope they'll

  1063. be your

  1064. heroes

  1065. too

  1066. you see

  1067. they are

  1068. people who

  1069. wait

  1070. for God's

  1071. harvest

  1072. suffering

  1073. has woken

  1074. them up

  1075. to the

  1076. fact that

  1077. they are

  1078. pilgrims

  1079. it's helped

  1080. them see

  1081. what really

  1082. matters in

  1083. life

  1084. they're

  1085. people who

  1086. long for

  1087. God's

  1088. renewal

  1089. they know

  1090. that God's

  1091. great day

  1092. of future

  1093. joy will

  1094. make up

  1095. for all

  1096. the

  1097. disappointments

  1098. of this

  1099. age

  1100. and while

  1101. they wait

  1102. while they

  1103. wait

  1104. they take

  1105. great comfort

  1106. from

  1107. the fact

  1108. that

  1109. Jesus

  1110. was a

  1111. man of

  1112. sorrows

  1113. you see

  1114. the path

  1115. laid out

  1116. in Psalm

  1117. 126

  1118. is a

  1119. path

  1120. that

  1121. Jesus

  1122. walked

  1123. joy

  1124. and

  1125. pain

  1126. suffering

  1127. and glory

  1128. these

  1129. are the

  1130. realities

  1131. that

  1132. Jesus

  1133. has

  1134. tasted

  1135. !

  1136. God

  1137. said

  1138. that

  1139. Jesus

  1140. the

  1141. cross

  1142. as he

  1143. went to

  1144. Calvary

  1145. as he

  1146. carried

  1147. our

  1148. sins

  1149. on his

  1150. shoulders

  1151. Jesus

  1152. knew he

  1153. was redeeming

  1154. men and

  1155. women

  1156. boys and

  1157. girls

  1158. a great

  1159. multitude

  1160. that no

  1161. one can

  1162. count

  1163. for God

  1164. the thought

  1165. of that

  1166. harvest

  1167. which you

  1168. are a part

  1169. of if you

  1170. are a

  1171. Christian

  1172. tonight

  1173. the thought

  1174. of that

  1175. harvest

  1176. filled his

  1177. heart

  1178. with joy

  1179. he plunged

  1180. right in

  1181. to a

  1182. world of

  1183. sin

  1184. and sorrow

  1185. he wept

  1186. and suffered

  1187. and bled

  1188. and died

  1189. to bring

  1190. many

  1191. sons

  1192. to glory

  1193. one day

  1194. we will

  1195. see his

  1196. scars

  1197. one day

  1198. we will

  1199. see his

  1200. face

  1201. the kindest

  1202. face

  1203. we have

  1204. ever seen

  1205. and we

  1206. will laugh

  1207. and cry

  1208. and dance

  1209. and sing

  1210. Amen
