  1. Well, it's not hard to feel like we need good news, is it?

  2. If you've seen the news this morning,

  3. Egypt, airliner, hijacked in Lanarka and Cyprus.

  4. ! We've looked at the news over the weekend.

  5. I don't know if it's been the storms.

  6. I think of the bomb in Lahore.

  7. I think of the ongoing devastation in people's lives

  8. leading from the bombs last week in Belgium.

  9. The ongoing hunt.

  10. And that's not even to mention our own personal situations.

  11. Maybe a bad diagnosis.

  12. Maybe a death in the family.

  13. The death of a loved one.

  14. Or just difficulties and sadness you've lived with for years.

  15. We all need some good news, don't we?

  16. Perhaps you feel a little bit like Mary going to the tomb that morning.

  17. It was still dark, John tells us.

  18. Emphasising the bleakness, the hopelessness of the situation.

  19. It was still dark.

  20. She was in confusion.

  21. She arrives and sees the stone rolled away.

  22. And does not know what has happened.

  23. She automatically thinks someone's taken Jesus' body.

  24. What she's longing for at this stage is just to see Jesus' body.

  25. To be with the body.

  26. To take it away.

  27. Brings embalment if necessary.

  28. And then there's distress, isn't there?

  29. Where's this body gone?

  30. What has happened?

  31. And so she does the only thing she can think to do.

  32. She runs to get help.

  33. She runs to the disciples.

  34. To Peter and John.

  35. And do you notice, as John tells us this story,

  36. we see their emotions as well.

  37. What do they do as Mary comes to them?

  38. They run to the tomb.

  39. I'm not even sure they necessarily know what they're running for.

  40. Just think of all this emotion, all this grief, all this frustration.

  41. And now confusion.

  42. Where's this body gone?

  43. But they're not really much help to Mary, are they?

  44. See what happens as they run to the tomb.

  45. We'll look at them and then we'll look at Mary.

  46. And then we'll look at what Jesus says to Mary at the end.

  47. So look, they both run to the tomb.

  48. I don't know how you imagine this.

  49. I imagine John to be the thinner one.

  50. Peter to be the big burly one.

  51. Of course, they're both fishermen.

  52. So John gets there fast first.

  53. He's the sprinter.

  54. Peter, a bit heavier, but he gets there eventually.

  55. When John gets to the tomb, verses 4 and 5,

  56. he kind of holds back.

  57. He looks in.

  58. He reflects on what is going on.

  59. He sees the linen cloths, but doesn't go in.

  60. But Peter?

  61. Well, it's characteristic Peter.

  62. He blunders straight in.

  63. He wants to see what's going on.

  64. Maybe he's a typical man.

  65. Mary's come to him with a problem.

  66. He wants to solve the problem.

  67. Where's this body gone?

  68. So he goes into the tomb.

  69. He says he sees the face cloth.

  70. The face cloth that should be on Jesus' head.

  71. Not lying with the linen cloths, verse 7,

  72. but folded up by itself.

  73. What does Peter see?

  74. Well, he doesn't see anything, in a sense, does he?

  75. He sees a problem that needs to be solved.

  76. What he doesn't realise yet,

  77. is that his greatest problem has been solved.

  78. Because Jesus has risen from the dead.

  79. What do you see,

  80. as you look at the resurrection story?

  81. Like Peter, do you see some bits of evidence

  82. which don't quite add up?

  83. Do you see a problem that needs to be solved?

  84. Do you see a nice story that just gets told every year?

  85. Or do you see something more?

  86. See, some people approach Christianity

  87. a bit like Peter approached the tomb.

  88. Run in, have a quick look,

  89. and then kind of go away

  90. without ever really having reflected on it,

  91. having ever really made sense of it.

  92. Just heading off again.

  93. I hear people say,

  94. I've tried that,

  95. I went to church for a while,

  96. I went to a camp as a kid.

  97. I've tried Christianity.

  98. What do you make,

  99. if you look at the tomb?

  100. What do you think of it?

  101. There's a contrast between Peter and John here,

  102. isn't there?

  103. Peter blunders in and runs off again.

  104. John,

  105. well, look at verse 8.

  106. The other disciple,

  107. that is John,

  108. who reached the tomb first,

  109. also went in,

  110. and he saw,

  111. and he believed,

  112. for as yet,

  113. they did not understand the scripture

  114. that he must rise from the dead.

  115. It's a funny way of putting it, isn't it?

  116. What did John believe?

  117. What did John believe?

  118. Well, he must have believed

  119. that Jesus had risen.

  120. That must be what he believed.

  121. Later on in the chapter,

  122. we'll see that's part of what belief is about.

  123. And how did he come to believe it?

  124. Well, in a part,

  125. on the basis of what his eyes could see,

  126. he could see the folded grave clothes.

  127. No grave robber had done this.

  128. Because no grave robber

  129. would leave a face cloth

  130. nicely folded away from the others.

  131. So he must have believed

  132. that Jesus had risen.

  133. But he didn't actually understand.

  134. What he's telling us here

  135. is actually you can believe that

  136. if you really understand

  137. what the Old Testament is about.

  138. You will understand

  139. that the Messiah,

  140. God's rescuer,

  141. must rise from the dead.

  142. At this point,

  143. John,

  144. writing honestly,

  145. did not understand that.

  146. But he saw with his own eyes

  147. that the tomb was empty.

  148. And so he believed

  149. Jesus must have risen from the dead.

  150. And of course,

  151. he had Jesus' words

  152. echoing in his ears,

  153. no doubt.

  154. Jesus had told the disciples

  155. many times he'd rise from the dead.

  156. So, for example,

  157. back in chapter 10,

  158. verse 17,

  159. Jesus had said this,

  160. For this reason,

  161. the Father loves me,

  162. because I lay down my life

  163. that I may take it up again.

  164. No one takes it from me,

  165. but I lay it down

  166. of my own accord.

  167. I have authority to lay it down,

  168. and I have authority

  169. to take it up again.

  170. This is the charge

  171. I've received from my Father.

  172. So perhaps as John

  173. is in that shadowy tomb

  174. on that first Easter morning,

  175. maybe those words

  176. are ringing in his ears

  177. as he sees the folded glazed clothes.

  178. So he believes

  179. Jesus has risen from the dead.

  180. But he still doesn't understand

  181. why it was necessary

  182. for Christ to rise from the dead.

  183. Now, why is it important

  184. we think about that?

  185. I think it's important

  186. for a number of reasons.

  187. Firstly, we've got to remember

  188. these are normal men

  189. witnessing these events.

  190. They weren't pre-scientific simpletons

  191. as some people accused them of.

  192. John wasn't going to believe anything

  193. unless he had something to see.

  194. It wasn't that they naturally believed

  195. dead people came back to life.

  196. Of course they didn't.

  197. They're more familiar

  198. with people dying

  199. and staying dead than we are.

  200. They didn't have

  201. intensive care units

  202. and defibrillators

  203. and resuscitation techniques.

  204. They knew that when people died

  205. they stayed dead.

  206. They were not gullible.

  207. But they had heard

  208. what Jesus had said.

  209. They'd heard Jesus say

  210. that while the world rejoices

  211. you will weep.

  212. They just hadn't really understood.

  213. Now that can be

  214. encouragement to all of us.

  215. It may be you're looking

  216. into the Christian faith.

  217. It may be you've been

  218. a Christian for years

  219. and the things you just

  220. don't understand.

  221. What do you see

  222. here?

  223. The apostle

  224. doesn't understand everything

  225. but he still believes.

  226. Saint Augustine said

  227. I believe

  228. in order to know.

  229. You can trust

  230. that Jesus is alive.

  231. You can trust

  232. what the scriptures say

  233. even if you don't have

  234. everything

  235. taped down

  236. and understood.

  237. That is okay.

  238. Where's Peter and John?

  239. Peter who looks quickly

  240. runs away.

  241. John who reflects

  242. and believes

  243. without fully understanding.

  244. I wonder how Mary

  245. felt at that point.

  246. She'd gone to get them

  247. in her distress

  248. and when we read

  249. verse 11

  250. or verse 10

  251. they scarf her off home

  252. meanwhile Mary

  253. verse 11

  254. stood weeping

  255. outside the tomb

  256. and as she wept

  257. she looked into the tomb.

  258. So these disciples

  259. haven't been much help

  260. to her have they?

  261. She's still weeping

  262. she's still looking

  263. for Jesus' body

  264. she still doesn't understand

  265. what's happened

  266. and she still has

  267. no expectation

  268. of finding him alive.

  269. So she looks

  270. into the tomb

  271. well verse 12

  272. she sees two angels

  273. in white

  274. and they said to her

  275. verse 13

  276. woman why are you weeping?

  277. Jesus then asked

  278. the same question

  279. why are you weeping?

  280. That's exactly

  281. the kind of question

  282. my wife and I

  283. ask our children

  284. when they're all upset

  285. about something.

  286. Joel, why are you crying?

  287. Why are you crying?

  288. It's actually a gentle question

  289. to encourage them

  290. there's no reason to weep

  291. and that's how

  292. the angels

  293. and how Jesus

  294. is asking a question

  295. to Mary

  296. why are you weeping?

  297. There is actually

  298. no reason to weep now

  299. as you will find out.

  300. Then Jesus asked her

  301. another question

  302. verse 15

  303. whom are you seeking?

  304. Who are you seeking?

  305. Mary what is it

  306. that you're looking for

  307. that you hope

  308. will put an end

  309. to these tears?

  310. I guess if we could

  311. stop the camera there

  312. and ask Mary

  313. what are you looking for?

  314. Well she would have told us

  315. I'm looking for Jesus' body

  316. that was the whole point

  317. of running to the disciples

  318. wasn't it?

  319. It's what she says

  320. to Jesus

  321. who she thinks

  322. is the gardener

  323. there in verse

  324. verse 15

  325. Sir if you've carried him away

  326. tell me where you've laid him

  327. and I will take him away

  328. what she wants

  329. what she thinks she wants

  330. is the body of Jesus

  331. in her grief

  332. that would in doubt

  333. be a comfort

  334. maybe she wants to

  335. embalm his body

  336. with spices

  337. we read that

  338. in the other gospels

  339. she wants to do

  340. a last act of service

  341. for Jesus

  342. she thinks

  343. that will bring comfort

  344. but do you notice

  345. Jesus had something

  346. much better for her

  347. than that

  348. Jesus had something

  349. much better for her

  350. than that

  351. and I wonder how true

  352. that is for each one

  353. of us as well

  354. don't we often think

  355. I'll feel better

  356. I'll be comforted

  357. when

  358. dot dot dot

  359. how do you finish

  360. that sentence?

  361. I'll feel better

  362. when

  363. I've got through

  364. this treatment

  365. I'll feel better

  366. when

  367. the kids

  368. are safely grown up

  369. and left school

  370. I'll feel better

  371. when

  372. the child

  373. is currently

  374. running away

  375. comes home

  376. I'll feel better

  377. how would you finish that?

  378. see Jesus

  379. has a better way

  380. of ending

  381. those tears

  382. and wiping them up

  383. we see that way

  384. in verse 16

  385. Jesus said to her

  386. Mary

  387. she turned

  388. and said to him

  389. in Aramaic

  390. Rabboni

  391. which means teacher

  392. what a moment

  393. you know how precious

  394. it is when someone

  395. you love calls your name

  396. someone perhaps

  397. you haven't even seen

  398. for a while

  399. someone hears your name

  400. being called by them

  401. you turn around

  402. it's a wonderful thing

  403. perhaps you think of a

  404. a reunion

  405. after a long separation

  406. think how it was

  407. for Mary

  408. to hear the very words

  409. of the master

  410. speaking her name

  411. Mary

  412. now Matthew tells us

  413. that at this point

  414. Mary

  415. and there are probably

  416. other women there

  417. fell down at Jesus' feet

  418. and grabbed hold of him

  419. Matthew 28 verse 29

  420. they came up

  421. and took hold of his feet

  422. and worshipped him

  423. they fell down

  424. prostrate before him

  425. no doubt that's

  426. what's going on

  427. it's a wonderful moment

  428. isn't it?

  429. Mary doesn't understand

  430. everything

  431. but Jesus is alive

  432. and has spoken to her

  433. but as John tells

  434. this story

  435. he wants to focus us

  436. on what Jesus says

  437. next

  438. because this is where

  439. the good news lies

  440. for you and me

  441. this is where we can

  442. have our Mary moment

  443. as it were

  444. where we can fall down

  445. in worship

  446. at the feet of the

  447. risen saviour

  448. and know that one day

  449. not today

  450. but one day

  451. he will wipe

  452. every tear away

  453. when he returns

  454. John wants us to know

  455. this because he wants

  456. us to believe

  457. he tells us that

  458. at the end of the

  459. chapter

  460. let's go on

  461. and look at

  462. Jesus' response

  463. there

  464. in verse 17

  465. Jesus said to Mary

  466. do not cling to me

  467. remember she's

  468. holding on to his feet

  469. for I have not yet

  470. ascended to the

  471. father

  472. but go to my

  473. brothers

  474. and say to them

  475. I am ascending

  476. to my father

  477. and your father

  478. to my God

  479. and your God

  480. what's Jesus saying?

  481. do not cling to me

  482. now Mary

  483. don't indulge in this

  484. don't just enjoy

  485. this spiritual experience

  486. you're having

  487. but I've got a job

  488. for you to do

  489. I'm going back

  490. to the father

  491. I'm not going

  492. just yet

  493. you'll see me again

  494. and everyone

  495. will see me one day

  496. but right now

  497. I've got a commission

  498. for you

  499. I've got a job

  500. for you

  501. so don't just enjoy

  502. your own private

  503. spiritual moment

  504. go and tell this

  505. good news

  506. to other people

  507. as well

  508. and for all of us

  509. who are Christians

  510. this good news

  511. that Mary has to

  512. announce

  513. is news for us

  514. if we've trusted

  515. in Jesus Christ

  516. this is good news

  517. for us

  518. and so the message

  519. for us

  520. is the same

  521. as it was for Mary

  522. don't just enjoy

  523. your spiritual high

  524. don't just enjoy

  525. your own spiritual

  526. moment with Jesus

  527. tell this good news

  528. to others

  529. tell it to yourself

  530. to other believers

  531. and to those

  532. who do not know

  533. I am ascending

  534. to my father

  535. and your father

  536. to my God

  537. and your God

  538. that's the good news

  539. message Jesus had

  540. for his disciples

  541. and throughout this gospel

  542. John has made it clear

  543. two things

  544. well a number of things

  545. where Jesus has come from

  546. and where he's going to

  547. so back in chapter 3

  548. Jesus said

  549. John recalls Jesus

  550. whereas only I

  551. have come down

  552. from heaven

  553. and as we go

  554. through the gospel

  555. we read that Jesus

  556. is going to go back

  557. to the father as well

  558. now what does that

  559. mean for the disciples

  560. what does it mean

  561. for us who believe

  562. well as we tease out

  563. this my God

  564. and your God

  565. my father

  566. and your father

  567. I want us to see

  568. three things

  569. it means vindication

  570. welcome

  571. and renewal

  572. vindication

  573. welcome

  574. and renewal

  575. think about vindication

  576. first of all

  577. think about those

  578. poor disciples

  579. they followed Jesus

  580. around for three years

  581. they left their homes

  582. their families

  583. and their livelihoods

  584. to follow him

  585. and they'd just seen him

  586. three days earlier

  587. nailed to

  588. on a Friday

  589. nailed to a cross

  590. crucified

  591. under the

  592. desires of the

  593. religious leaders

  594. it looked like

  595. the religious leaders

  596. had won

  597. it looked like

  598. the God they served

  599. was the powerful one

  600. they must have

  601. the disciples

  602. must have worried

  603. have we got it all wrong?

  604. have we wasted

  605. the last three years?

  606. have we misunderstood?

  607. have we misread Jesus?

  608. Jesus says

  609. I'm going back to

  610. my God

  611. and your God

  612. Jesus died

  613. as a humiliated

  614. criminal

  615. on a cross

  616. hanging on a cross

  617. was a sign of being

  618. under God's curse

  619. as Deuteronomy tells us

  620. from the Old Testament

  621. he looked

  622. utterly despised

  623. and rejected by God

  624. and yet God

  625. has raised him to life

  626. so Jesus says

  627. he's my God

  628. and your God

  629. if you trust in me

  630. he is your God too

  631. you may feel

  632. oppressed

  633. you may feel

  634. downtrodden

  635. you may feel

  636. like a loser

  637. you may wonder

  638. whether this was

  639. worthwhile

  640. maybe even to us

  641. today

  642. we think

  643. maybe I shouldn't

  644. take Christianity

  645. too seriously

  646. especially given

  647. the way the world

  648. looks at those

  649. of us who are

  650. Christians

  651. fundamentalists

  652. idiots

  653. whatever the words

  654. are

  655. maybe

  656. maybe I shouldn't

  657. take it too

  658. seriously

  659. Jesus says no

  660. I've been raised

  661. from the dead

  662. I'm going back

  663. to my God

  664. and your God

  665. Jesus' resurrection

  666. is his vindication

  667. proof that the

  668. father loves the

  669. son

  670. proof that the

  671. father accepts

  672. the son

  673. proof that the

  674. humiliation

  675. of the son

  676. was for our

  677. sake

  678. so that we

  679. could become

  680. his children

  681. so Jesus

  682. says he's my

  683. God and your

  684. God

  685. if you trust

  686. in me

  687. and as the

  688. father has

  689. raised me

  690. from the dead

  691. so he will

  692. raise you

  693. from the dead

  694. so you will

  695. be vindicated

  696. too

  697. you're truly

  698. on God's

  699. side if you

  700. trust in

  701. Jesus

  702. you see why

  703. that's important

  704. in a society

  705. where people

  706. think all

  707. religions are

  708. equally valid

  709. in a society

  710. that thinks

  711. taking anything

  712. too seriously

  713. is just a bit

  714. silly

  715. in our own

  716. lives when it

  717. can be hard

  718. to be loyal

  719. to King

  720. Jesus

  721. we need to

  722. see the

  723. resurrection

  724. is the

  725. vindication

  726. of Jesus

  727. and therefore

  728. the vindication

  729. of all who

  730. trust in

  731. Jesus

  732. but John

  733. goes on

  734. Jesus goes

  735. on

  736. I'm attending

  737. to my

  738. father

  739. and your

  740. father

  741. my father

  742. and your

  743. father

  744. now let me

  745. make one

  746. thing clear

  747. here

  748. nobody

  749. has God

  750. as father

  751. unless they

  752. trust in

  753. Jesus

  754. nobody

  755. has God

  756. as father

  757. unless they

  758. trust in

  759. Jesus

  760. it is only

  761. in Jesus

  762. we can call

  763. God

  764. father

  765. we're all

  766. God's

  767. creatures

  768. we're all

  769. made in

  770. God's

  771. image

  772. but we're

  773. not all

  774. God's

  775. children

  776. in fact

  777. by nature

  778. we're children

  779. of wrath

  780. the new

  781. testament tells us

  782. by nature

  783. we're cut

  784. off from

  785. God

  786. it's only

  787. in Jesus

  788. that we can

  789. call God

  790. father

  791. now

  792. what are

  793. the implications

  794. of that

  795. let me draw

  796. up two

  797. first

  798. is we're

  799. welcomed

  800. by the

  801. father

  802. back in

  803. chapter 14

  804. verse 6

  805. Jesus famously

  806. said

  807. I am the

  808. way

  809. the truth

  810. and the

  811. life

  812. no one

  813. comes to

  814. the father

  815. except through

  816. me

  817. there are

  818. all sorts

  819. of ways

  820. people try

  821. to get

  822. connected

  823. with God

  824. aren't

  825. there

  826. you get

  827. your

  828. eightfold

  829. path

  830. in Buddhism

  831. you get

  832. the five

  833. pillars

  834. of Islam

  835. you get

  836. the secular

  837. equivalence

  838. of being

  839. a nice

  840. upstanding

  841. person

  842. being tolerant

  843. and giving

  844. to charity

  845. and caring

  846. about the

  847. environment

  848. people do

  849. all these

  850. things

  851. to try

  852. and gain

  853. some sort

  854. of contact

  855. some sort

  856. of

  857. acceptance

  858. by God

  859. but Jesus

  860. says it's

  861. only

  862. if you're

  863. trusting in

  864. my life

  865. and death

  866. and resurrection

  867. that you can

  868. call God

  869. father

  870. I am the

  871. only way

  872. to the

  873. father

  874. Mohammed

  875. does not

  876. provide a

  877. way to the

  878. father

  879. Buddha

  880. does not

  881. Hinduism

  882. is not

  883. a way

  884. of being

  885. connected

  886. with the

  887. father

  888. being a

  889. nice

  890. moral

  891. person

  892. is not

  893. a way

  894. of being

  895. connected

  896. with the

  897. father

  898. it only

  899. comes

  900. through

  901. believing

  902. in Jesus

  903. it's only

  904. through

  905. Jesus

  906. we can

  907. call

  908. God

  909. father

  910. it's only

  911. through

  912. Jesus

  913. we are

  914. welcomed

  915. Jesus

  916. said

  917. through

  918. disciples

  919. in John

  920. 14

  921. that he

  922. was going

  923. to the

  924. father

  925. but in

  926. his

  927. father's

  928. house

  929. there were

  930. many

  931. rooms

  932. he'd

  933. gone

  934. there

  935. to

  936. prepare

  937. a

  938. place

  939. for

  940. them

  941. and

  942. he'd

  943. come

  944. back

  945. and take

  946. them

  947. with

  948. him

  949. he's

  950. coming

  951. back

  952. for all

  953. who

  954. believe

  955. to give

  956. us a

  957. place

  958. in his

  959. father's

  960. house

  961. I was

  962. just

  963. staying

  964. a

  965. recent

  966. weekend

  967. in my

  968. mother-in-law's

  969. house

  970. it's always

  971. nice to go

  972. there

  973. we go to the

  974. guest room

  975. we always feel

  976. at home

  977. we're always

  978. welcomed

  979. it's a place

  980. where we can

  981. belong

  982. how much

  983. better

  984. to belong

  985. to be

  986. welcomed

  987. by our

  988. heavenly

  989. father

  990. because we

  991. received

  992. his son

  993. but there's

  994. a second

  995. implication

  996. of Jesus

  997. saying

  998. my father

  999. and your

  1000. father

  1001. what does

  1002. it actually

  1003. mean to be

  1004. able to

  1005. call God

  1006. father

  1007. what needs

  1008. to happen

  1009. in our

  1010. lives

  1011. in order

  1012. to be

  1013. able to

  1014. call God

  1015. father

  1016. what is

  1017. it that

  1018. can make

  1019. us

  1020. children

  1021. of God

  1022. well

  1023. John tells

  1024. us right

  1025. back at the

  1026. start of

  1027. his gospel

  1028. chapter 1

  1029. verse 12

  1030. he says

  1031. to all

  1032. who did

  1033. receive

  1034. Jesus

  1035. to all

  1036. who believed

  1037. in his

  1038. name

  1039. that is

  1040. to all

  1041. who believed

  1042. Jesus was

  1043. who he said

  1044. he was

  1045. the eternal

  1046. son of

  1047. God

  1048. come to

  1049. die

  1050. and rise

  1051. again

  1052. for sinners

  1053. whoever

  1054. believed

  1055. in his

  1056. name

  1057. he

  1058. gave

  1059. the

  1060. right

  1061. to become

  1062. children

  1063. of God

  1064. children

  1065. who were

  1066. born

  1067. not of

  1068. blood

  1069. nor of

  1070. the will

  1071. of the

  1072. flesh

  1073. nor the

  1074. will

  1075. of man

  1076. but of

  1077. God

  1078. how do we

  1079. become

  1080. how do we

  1081. become God's

  1082. children

  1083. by believing

  1084. and as we

  1085. believe

  1086. Jesus does

  1087. something in

  1088. us

  1089. he changes

  1090. us

  1091. Christianity

  1092. isn't merely

  1093. about

  1094. believing

  1095. certain facts

  1096. although it

  1097. does include

  1098. believing

  1099. it isn't

  1100. merely a matter

  1101. of behaving

  1102. in certain

  1103. ways

  1104. or it

  1105. does affect

  1106. our behaviour

  1107. it isn't

  1108. merely about

  1109. having a

  1110. certain ethical

  1111. code

  1112. although one

  1113. will do

  1114. that if

  1115. one is

  1116. following

  1117. Jesus

  1118. it is

  1119. fundamentally

  1120. about a

  1121. change that

  1122. happens within

  1123. us

  1124. as God

  1125. by his

  1126. spirit

  1127. makes us

  1128. his children

  1129. gives us

  1130. new life

  1131. as he

  1132. raised the

  1133. son to

  1134. new life

  1135. in the

  1136. resurrection

  1137. so he

  1138. can raise

  1139. us to

  1140. new life

  1141. renewal

  1142. inside of

  1143. us

  1144. making us

  1145. new people

  1146. it means

  1147. complete renewal

  1148. God

  1149. changes us

  1150. from the

  1151. inside out

  1152. so as

  1153. Jesus says

  1154. to Mary

  1155. go to my

  1156. brothers

  1157. those who are

  1158. part of my

  1159. family

  1160. and say

  1161. I'm ascending

  1162. to my God

  1163. and your God

  1164. my father

  1165. and your father

  1166. he's telling us

  1167. we can celebrate

  1168. vindication

  1169. if we trust in

  1170. Jesus

  1171. we are gods

  1172. and he will

  1173. vindicate us

  1174. one day

  1175. entirely

  1176. when Jesus

  1177. returns

  1178. it means

  1179. welcome

  1180. we're accepted

  1181. and loved

  1182. by the

  1183. heavenly father

  1184. and have a

  1185. home with him

  1186. forever

  1187. and it means

  1188. renewal

  1189. he's changing

  1190. us now

  1191. making us

  1192. new people

  1193. see what

  1194. difference

  1195. that message

  1196. made to

  1197. Mary's life

  1198. we contrast

  1199. in the start

  1200. and the end

  1201. she turns up

  1202. with tears

  1203. she leaves

  1204. with joy

  1205. she arrives

  1206. in darkness

  1207. but her life

  1208. is flooded

  1209. with light

  1210. as she leaves

  1211. she came

  1212. hopeless

  1213. and leaves

  1214. knowing

  1215. she's a child

  1216. of God

  1217. who will

  1218. one day

  1219. be with

  1220. Jesus

  1221. forever

  1222. now what

  1223. difference

  1224. does that

  1225. make for us

  1226. she'd make

  1227. all sorts

  1228. of differences

  1229. shouldn't it

  1230. I got an

  1231. email yesterday

  1232. I think it was

  1233. from some

  1234. friends of mine

  1235. who work

  1236. with or have

  1237. dealings with

  1238. those who work

  1239. with Syrian

  1240. refugees

  1241. fleeing the

  1242. whole horrible

  1243. conflict in

  1244. Syria

  1245. we all know

  1246. from our TV

  1247. screens don't we

  1248. how awful it

  1249. is

  1250. and yet

  1251. some people

  1252. fleeing that

  1253. conflict

  1254. have turned

  1255. their back

  1256. on Islam

  1257. have risked

  1258. the wrath

  1259. of their

  1260. family

  1261. and their

  1262. communities

  1263. and have

  1264. come to

  1265. faith in

  1266. Christ

  1267. they might

  1268. think that's

  1269. like jumping

  1270. from the

  1271. frying pan

  1272. into the

  1273. fire

  1274. yet these

  1275. people say

  1276. this

  1277. the most

  1278. important

  1279. thing is

  1280. that we

  1281. know Jesus

  1282. Christ as

  1283. our

  1284. saviour

  1285. thank God

  1286. for the war

  1287. in Syria

  1288. it brought

  1289. us to

  1290. Jesus

  1291. thank God

  1292. for the war

  1293. in Syria

  1294. it brought

  1295. us to

  1296. Jesus

  1297. now that

  1298. confounds

  1299. my wisdom

  1300. and yet

  1301. isn't it

  1302. true

  1303. these poor

  1304. persecuted

  1305. people

  1306. know they

  1307. will be

  1308. vindicated

  1309. because Jesus

  1310. is alive

  1311. know they

  1312. have a welcome

  1313. from the

  1314. father

  1315. even when

  1316. they're hated

  1317. by their

  1318. families

  1319. know they

  1320. have renewal

  1321. now

  1322. which enables

  1323. them to

  1324. rejoice

  1325. in the

  1326. midst of

  1327. horrendous

  1328. suffering

  1329. that's

  1330. what the

  1331. difference

  1332. the

  1333. resurrection

  1334. makes

  1335. to them

  1336. what

  1337. difference

  1338. does the

  1339. resurrection

  1340. make

  1341. to me

  1342. and to

  1343. you

  1344. let me pray

  1345. for us

  1346. thank you

  1347. thank you
