  1. Amen.

  2. New friends as well. I look forward to

  3. spending some time with you throughout the day.

  4. I wonder, do you ever

  5. wonder what the

  6. purpose of the church is?

  7. Do you ever

  8. ask yourself, what is the point

  9. of the church?

  10. If you were to walk outside

  11. after our service this morning

  12. and someone were to

  13. stop you and say, well,

  14. what have you just been doing? Why the church?

  15. What is its purpose?

  16. What is its point? What would you say to them?

  17. What would be your answer?

  18. Maybe some of you are actually

  19. asking that very question this morning.

  20. You perhaps have been a Christian for a number of years.

  21. Or maybe you are just a relatively new

  22. Christian. Or maybe you're not even a Christian

  23. at all. And you're just investigating

  24. Christianity and

  25. Christ and the church. And

  26. you're wondering, what is the church?

  27. Why the church? What is its point?

  28. What is its purpose? Why

  29. do we do what we do

  30. Sunday by Sunday?

  31. It's a good question

  32. to ask, but many Christians are

  33. confused, I would say, about

  34. the answer to that question.

  35. It's vital

  36. to know why we exist.

  37. It's vital to know

  38. what the purpose,

  39. the unique purpose

  40. of the church is.

  41. And so when I found out

  42. this morning that I was going

  43. to be preaching at the service

  44. where you would be commissioning

  45. the new church plant

  46. in Brentford,

  47. I thought it made sense

  48. to preach on the passage

  49. that we generally call

  50. the Great Commission

  51. at the end of Matthew's Gospel.

  52. Because here,

  53. here in this passage,

  54. right at the end of Matthew's Gospel,

  55. we have Jesus himself

  56. having ridden

  57. from the dead,

  58. setting out in capsule form,

  59. as it were,

  60. the main purpose,

  61. or one of the main purposes

  62. of the church.

  63. Here Jesus himself

  64. explains,

  65. in just a few short sentences,

  66. what the fundamental

  67. points and purpose

  68. and mission

  69. of the church is.

  70. Which is what?

  71. Well it's this.

  72. It's to get the Gospel out.

  73. It's to tell people

  74. about the Lord Jesus Christ,

  75. about who he is,

  76. and about all that he's done.

  77. It's to spread the message

  78. of a crucified

  79. and now risen

  80. Saviour.

  81. That is what Jesus

  82. is basically saying here

  83. to these

  84. eleven disciples,

  85. and indeed through them

  86. to the whole church

  87. of Jesus Christ.

  88. He is saying to them,

  89. I have

  90. defeated death,

  91. I have dealt with

  92. your sin,

  93. I have crushed

  94. Satan underfoot,

  95. now go

  96. and tell people

  97. about me.

  98. that is what I'm calling

  99. you to do.

  100. That is why we exist.

  101. That is the point

  102. of the church,

  103. that will be the point

  104. of the new church

  105. plants in Brentford,

  106. to make Jesus known.

  107. After all,

  108. just ask yourself this,

  109. which other organisation

  110. is going to do that?

  111. There is no other organisation,

  112. there is no corporation,

  113. there is no company,

  114. there is no other charity,

  115. whose purpose it is

  116. to tell people

  117. the gospel,

  118. to spread the message

  119. of Jesus Christ.

  120. Only the church

  121. will do that,

  122. only the church

  123. must do that.

  124. Our purpose

  125. is glorious.

  126. There is no greater

  127. mission statement

  128. than the one

  129. that the church has,

  130. which is,

  131. in a nutshell,

  132. to proclaim

  133. the excellencies

  134. of Jesus Christ.

  135. There is no more

  136. excellent person

  137. than the Lord Jesus

  138. himself,

  139. and it is your privilege

  140. as Christians

  141. to proclaim

  142. those excellencies,

  143. the all-sufficiency,

  144. the grace,

  145. the glory

  146. of Jesus Christ

  147. to a needy

  148. and a sinful world.

  149. And we should note

  150. as well

  151. that this

  152. is an

  153. epoch-shifting

  154. purpose.

  155. What do I mean by that?

  156. It means something

  157. that changes

  158. the world

  159. forever.

  160. Something that is

  161. world-shattering,

  162. something that is

  163. history-defining.

  164. That is why,

  165. if you notice,

  166. in verse 16,

  167. Jesus meets

  168. these eleven disciples

  169. on a mountain.

  170. That location

  171. is significant.

  172. It's not a mere

  173. geographical detail.

  174. We're not sure

  175. exactly

  176. which mountain

  177. it was,

  178. but

  179. we do know

  180. that throughout

  181. the Bible,

  182. authoritative

  183. teaching,

  184. fresh revelation

  185. that drives

  186. the purposes

  187. of God forward,

  188. they are often

  189. given on a mountain.

  190. You just have to

  191. think about

  192. the Ten Commandments

  193. that we read

  194. earlier on.

  195. Given to Moses

  196. where?

  197. On a mountain,

  198. on Mount Sinai.

  199. Jesus himself.

  200. His famous

  201. sermon on the

  202. Mount.

  203. Fresh revelation,

  204. authoritative teaching,

  205. driving the purposes

  206. of the Kingdom

  207. of God

  208. forward.

  209. and that is

  210. what we see

  211. happening here

  212. as well

  213. with this

  214. great commission.

  215. This is a

  216. history-defining,

  217. an epoch-shifting

  218. event that is

  219. going on here.

  220. Jesus here

  221. is presented

  222. by Matthew

  223. as the

  224. victorious king

  225. who has conquered

  226. the greatest enemy,

  227. death and sin

  228. and Satan.

  229. The victorious king

  230. who is sending out

  231. his foot soldiers

  232. to lay claims

  233. of a territory

  234. that is rightfully

  235. his.

  236. Jesus here

  237. is, if you will,

  238. our commander-in-chief

  239. and he is setting

  240. us out,

  241. he is sending

  242. you out

  243. on the most

  244. momentous mission

  245. imaginable.

  246. And so that's what

  247. I want to focus on

  248. in our time together

  249. this morning,

  250. the mission of the church,

  251. the purpose

  252. of the church,

  253. what it is

  254. that Jesus

  255. calls his disciples

  256. and through them

  257. as the foundation

  258. of the church,

  259. through them

  260. he calls us

  261. to do,

  262. to carry on

  263. that same mission.

  264. And I want to look

  265. at it under

  266. three main headings,

  267. the three-point sermon,

  268. traditional sermon

  269. formats,

  270. that's what you get

  271. with me I'm afraid.

  272. But three main points

  273. that I want to consider

  274. with you this morning.

  275. The first one

  276. is this,

  277. that Jesus'

  278. power fuels

  279. mission.

  280. Jesus' power

  281. is what fuels

  282. mission.

  283. He said that in

  284. verse 18.

  285. Just look down

  286. at that.

  287. And Jesus came

  288. and said to them

  289. all authority

  290. in heaven

  291. and on earth

  292. has been given

  293. to me.

  294. Jesus is saying

  295. I have a

  296. power

  297. that is

  298. unsurpassed,

  299. an authority

  300. that you cannot

  301. measure.

  302. I have

  303. defeated death,

  304. I have

  305. crushed sin,

  306. I have conquered

  307. Satan.

  308. All authority

  309. is now

  310. mine.

  311. All authority

  312. in heaven

  313. and on earth.

  314. In other words,

  315. everyone,

  316. everywhere,

  317. there is no exception,

  318. everyone,

  319. everywhere,

  320. is under

  321. my authority

  322. as the one

  323. who is

  324. Lord of all.

  325. Angels and saints,

  326. devils and demons,

  327. men and women,

  328. boys and girls,

  329. kings and queens,

  330. prime ministers

  331. and presidents,

  332. animals and plants,

  333. sun, moon and stars,

  334. you name it,

  335. it's his.

  336. Jesus is

  337. the master

  338. of the universe.

  339. Jesus is

  340. the king

  341. of the cosmos.

  342. That is

  343. who Matthew

  344. is presenting

  345. to us

  346. here.

  347. You remember

  348. back in the

  349. first chapter

  350. of Matthew,

  351. Jesus there

  352. is presented

  353. as the one

  354. who is

  355. the great

  356. son of

  357. who?

  358. Of King

  359. David.

  360. And then in

  361. chapter 2,

  362. who is it

  363. that worships

  364. Jesus?

  365. It's the wise

  366. men

  367. coming from

  368. the nations

  369. and they come

  370. to worship

  371. the one

  372. born king

  373. of the Jews.

  374. And then at the

  375. end of his life,

  376. Jesus is crucified,

  377. albeit in a

  378. mocking fashion,

  379. he's crucified

  380. as the king

  381. of the Jews.

  382. And now

  383. Matthew presents

  384. Jesus as

  385. the king

  386. whose authority

  387. transcends

  388. all national

  389. boundaries,

  390. whose authority

  391. transcends

  392. all intergalactic

  393. boundaries,

  394. an authority

  395. that is

  396. over everyone,

  397. everywhere.

  398. He is

  399. the king

  400. of all.

  401. But maybe

  402. some of you

  403. are asking

  404. this question,

  405. didn't Jesus

  406. have all

  407. authority

  408. anyway?

  409. After all,

  410. is he not

  411. the son of

  412. God?

  413. And does

  414. not the son

  415. of God

  416. possess all

  417. authority?

  418. And that is

  419. true.

  420. He does

  421. possess all

  422. authority

  423. eternally,

  424. as the

  425. son of

  426. God.

  427. And so

  428. here we find

  429. Jesus speaking

  430. of a new

  431. kind of

  432. authority

  433. authority

  434. into which

  435. he has

  436. entered.

  437. An authority

  438. that he

  439. now possesses

  440. not,

  441. as it were,

  442. natively or

  443. essentially,

  444. simply by who

  445. he is as

  446. the eternal

  447. son of God.

  448. No,

  449. this is an

  450. authority that

  451. he has

  452. entered into

  453. as a result

  454. of his

  455. death and

  456. resurrection.

  457. You might

  458. call it

  459. an exalted

  460. messianic

  461. authority,

  462. an exalted

  463. messianic

  464. authority.

  465. An authority

  466. that comes

  467. from,

  468. based upon,

  469. derivative of

  470. all of his

  471. completed work

  472. that he

  473. accomplished

  474. on earth.

  475. Maybe you

  476. can think

  477. about it

  478. this way.

  479. One of the

  480. most startling

  481. stories over

  482. the past

  483. season,

  484. particularly for

  485. football fans,

  486. is the success

  487. of Leicester

  488. City.

  489. I cannot

  490. believe that

  491. they are

  492. about to win

  493. the Premier

  494. League.

  495. It's

  496. astonishing,

  497. isn't it?

  498. Now,

  499. at the start

  500. of the season,

  501. Claudio Ranieri

  502. possessed

  503. authority as

  504. the manager

  505. of Leicester

  506. City.

  507. He had

  508. that authority

  509. was native

  510. to him as

  511. the manager.

  512. But think

  513. about the

  514. authority that

  515. he now

  516. possesses,

  517. having just

  518. won or about

  519. to win the

  520. Premier League.

  521. He has,

  522. as it were,

  523. entered into

  524. a new kind

  525. of authority

  526. based upon

  527. the success

  528. of this

  529. past season.

  530. Think of

  531. all the

  532. players that

  533. are now

  534. going to

  535. want to

  536. come and

  537. play under

  538. him.

  539. Think about

  540. all the

  541. other bigger

  542. clubs that

  543. might be

  544. interested in

  545. hiring him.

  546. He's entered

  547. into,

  548. as it were,

  549. a new

  550. kind of

  551. authority on

  552. the basis

  553. of all of

  554. the glorious

  555. work that

  556. he and his

  557. team have

  558. done over

  559. the past

  560. season.

  561. That is

  562. something like

  563. what Jesus

  564. is speaking

  565. of here.

  566. Almost

  567. against all

  568. the odds,

  569. Leicester

  570. have triumphed.

  571. In a similar

  572. way,

  573. Jesus,

  574. against all

  575. the odds,

  576. hanging on a

  577. cross,

  578. doesn't look

  579. much like

  580. the triumphant

  581. king.

  582. But against

  583. all the odds,

  584. he has won

  585. the ultimate

  586. victory over

  587. death and

  588. sin and

  589. Satan.

  590. And now he

  591. has entered

  592. into his

  593. messianic

  594. authority,

  595. something that

  596. he did not

  597. possess before.

  598. And this is

  599. why you should

  600. note,

  601. Jesus speaks of

  602. this authority

  603. as having been

  604. given to him.

  605. All authority

  606. in heaven and

  607. on earth has

  608. been given

  609. to me.

  610. Given by

  611. who?

  612. Given by

  613. his father,

  614. his heavenly

  615. father.

  616. Why?

  617. Well,

  618. as the reward

  619. for perfectly

  620. fulfilling the

  621. rescue mission

  622. that the

  623. father sent

  624. the Lord

  625. Jesus upon.

  626. For perfectly

  627. carrying out

  628. and

  629. accomplishing

  630. and fulfilling

  631. his own

  632. commission.

  633. His own

  634. commission to

  635. be born

  636. of the

  637. virgin.

  638. His own

  639. commission to

  640. live the

  641. perfect life

  642. for all of

  643. his people.

  644. His own

  645. commission to

  646. die a sin

  647. bearing death

  648. as his people

  649. substitute on

  650. the cross.

  651. Bearing their

  652. punishment in

  653. their place.

  654. His own

  655. commission to

  656. rise again

  657. from the

  658. grave,

  659. triumphant.

  660. He's now

  661. fulfilled his

  662. commission to

  663. save sinners.

  664. And notice

  665. what that

  666. means.

  667. Notice what

  668. that means.

  669. It means that

  670. our commission

  671. as a church,

  672. the commission

  673. of Emmanuel

  674. Church in

  675. Brentford,

  676. is rooted in

  677. the commission

  678. that Jesus

  679. himself undertook.

  680. Our commission

  681. flows out of

  682. his commission

  683. and the

  684. success of

  685. our commission

  686. is guaranteed

  687. by the

  688. success of

  689. his commission.

  690. You see,

  691. the great

  692. commission,

  693. as we

  694. call it,

  695. has as

  696. its

  697. propulsive

  698. force an

  699. even greater

  700. commission

  701. that drives

  702. it forward.

  703. Our commission

  704. is driven

  705. forward

  706. ineluctably,

  707. powerfully,

  708. by the commission

  709. that Jesus

  710. himself undertook

  711. and fulfilled.

  712. And isn't that

  713. such a relief

  714. for us?

  715. Isn't that

  716. such a relief

  717. for us?

  718. As we go

  719. out into

  720. the world,

  721. seeking to

  722. fulfill this

  723. great commission,

  724. as churches

  725. are planted,

  726. as people

  727. are sent

  728. abroad or

  729. sent to

  730. other places

  731. in this

  732. country,

  733. isn't it

  734. wonderful that

  735. we don't go

  736. on our own

  737. authority?

  738. authority.

  739. We go

  740. on the

  741. authority of

  742. King Jesus,

  743. who has

  744. all authority.

  745. We are

  746. weak,

  747. we are

  748. frail,

  749. we are

  750. sinful,

  751. but we

  752. have an

  753. all-conquering

  754. power at

  755. our disposal.

  756. That's what

  757. you as a

  758. church need

  759. to remember,

  760. that's what

  761. Emmanuel

  762. Church

  763. Brentford

  764. needs to

  765. remember.

  766. I look at

  767. Stuart and

  768. he is

  769. someone that

  770. knows weakness

  771. and frailty,

  772. but at his

  773. disposal, at

  774. the church's

  775. disposal, is

  776. an all-conquering

  777. power that

  778. will never

  779. fail them.

  780. And he

  781. uses, as

  782. well,

  783. doubting

  784. worshippers.

  785. We should

  786. note that.

  787. It says there

  788. in verse 17,

  789. when the

  790. disciples saw

  791. him, they

  792. worshipped him,

  793. but some

  794. doubted.

  795. I actually

  796. think there's

  797. some people

  798. that think

  799. that there

  800. are two

  801. different

  802. groups,

  803. there's

  804. some that

  805. are worshipping,

  806. others that

  807. are doubting.

  808. I tend to

  809. think that

  810. those who

  811. worship also

  812. those who

  813. simultaneously

  814. doubt.

  815. Isn't that so

  816. often what our

  817. experience is like?

  818. We can be

  819. full of

  820. worshipful joy

  821. and confidence

  822. and yet at the

  823. same time,

  824. that is

  825. punctuated,

  826. that is

  827. tarnished

  828. somewhat by

  829. doubt.

  830. Doubt about

  831. who Jesus

  832. is, does

  833. he really

  834. love me,

  835. can I do

  836. this, he's

  837. called me to

  838. do.

  839. He uses

  840. doubting

  841. worshippers.

  842. He doesn't

  843. use strong

  844. people.

  845. He doesn't

  846. use strong

  847. people.

  848. All the

  849. power is

  850. his.

  851. He uses

  852. people like

  853. you, people

  854. like me, who

  855. are weak, who

  856. doubt, who

  857. are frail.

  858. But we have

  859. an all-conquering

  860. power at our

  861. disposal.

  862. Secondly, Jesus'

  863. program directs

  864. mission.

  865. We've seen

  866. that Jesus'

  867. power fulfills,

  868. excuse me, fuels

  869. mission.

  870. And now we see

  871. that Jesus'

  872. program directs

  873. mission.

  874. Just look at

  875. verse 19 through

  876. to the start of

  877. verse 20.

  878. Jesus says,

  879. go therefore and

  880. make disciples of

  881. all nations, baptizing

  882. them in the name

  883. of the Father and

  884. of the Son and

  885. of the Holy

  886. Spirit, teaching

  887. them to observe

  888. all that I have

  889. commanded you.

  890. Here we have

  891. Jesus, the

  892. victorious king,

  893. laying out this

  894. program for his

  895. church, for his

  896. people to follow.

  897. And you can see

  898. what the key

  899. goal of this

  900. program is.

  901. It's to make

  902. disciples.

  903. That is where

  904. the emphasis

  905. lies in this

  906. verse.

  907. The emphasis is

  908. on the making

  909. of disciples,

  910. the making of

  911. disciples from

  912. all nations.

  913. Jesus is saying

  914. here, because I

  915. am Lord of all,

  916. because all

  917. authority in

  918. heaven and on

  919. earth has been

  920. given to me, I

  921. want people from

  922. all nations to

  923. follow me, to be

  924. my disciples.

  925. disciples.

  926. Which raises

  927. the question,

  928. how is this

  929. done?

  930. How does the

  931. church go about

  932. seeking to make

  933. disciples?

  934. And thankfully

  935. for us, Jesus

  936. tells us in three

  937. broad ways how

  938. the church is to

  939. go about making

  940. disciples.

  941. We don't need to

  942. invent our own

  943. programs.

  944. We have the

  945. program of Christ

  946. himself to direct

  947. our purpose as a

  948. church.

  949. First of all, we

  950. make disciples by

  951. going.

  952. Go therefore and

  953. make disciples of

  954. all nations.

  955. It's an obvious

  956. point I know, but

  957. it's worth stressing.

  958. We need to go

  959. into all nations in

  960. order to make

  961. disciples, because

  962. that's where potential

  963. disciples live.

  964. You won't make

  965. disciples by staying

  966. put.

  967. And what's

  968. interesting here is

  969. that this signals

  970. a vital

  971. watershed, a

  972. dramatic shift in

  973. the plans of God.

  974. Earlier on in

  975. Matthew's Gospel in

  976. chapter 10, Jesus

  977. had sent his

  978. apostles out to

  979. the house of

  980. Israel.

  981. And he had

  982. specifically said

  983. to them, do not

  984. go to the Gentiles.

  985. Do not go to the

  986. Samaritans.

  987. Go to the house of

  988. Israel.

  989. But now, now he

  990. says, go out to

  991. all nations.

  992. Go to the whole

  993. world, because of

  994. my cosmic authority

  995. that I have now

  996. inaugurated as the

  997. risen king.

  998. And again, this is

  999. rooted in Jesus'

  1000. own going.

  1001. Can you imagine

  1002. Jesus, the son of

  1003. God, in eternity

  1004. saying to the

  1005. father, well, yeah,

1006. I like the plan to

  1007. save sinners, but I

  1008. really don't fancy

  1009. going.

  1010. Of course not.

  1011. He delighted him

1012. to be sent by his

  1013. father to come and

  1014. save his people.

  1015. It delighted him to

  1016. go into the world

  1017. himself in order to

  1018. fulfil his own

  1019. commission.

1020. He came, and so we

  1021. too must go.

  1022. Now the emphasis

  1023. here is on the

  1024. church itself going

  1025. into the world with

  1026. the message of the

  1027. gospel.

  1028. Preachers, ministers

  1029. going out, missionaries

  1030. going out, declaring

  1031. the good news of

  1032. Jesus Christ.

  1033. But it also, I

  1034. think, entails

  1035. Christians, just

  1036. generally Christians,

  1037. whoever you are,

  1038. going out into

  1039. work, going out

  1040. into school, going

  1041. out into the

  1042. community in which

  1043. you live, going

  1044. out into your

  1045. neighbours' homes,

  1046. even perhaps as it

  1047. were going out into

  1048. your own families.

1049. That is what we are

  1050. to be about as

  1051. Christians.

  1052. Going out.

  1053. The Christian

  1054. life you see is

  1055. not static.

  1056. The Christian life

  1057. is dynamic.

  1058. It has this

  1059. dynamic force to

  1060. it.

  1061. And for those of

  1062. you with children,

  1063. what is your

  1064. mission field?

  1065. Where do you go?

  1066. Oh, your

  1067. children.

  1068. Well, children are

  1069. your mission field.

  1070. I remember one

  1071. time a lady

  1072. speaking to

  1073. someone, feeling

  1074. utterly bereft and

  1075. down because she

  1076. just wasn't speaking

  1077. to that many

  1078. non-Christians.

1079. she had done as a

  1080. younger woman when

  1081. she was at

  1082. university.

  1083. I think she'd

  1084. seen quite a few

  1085. of her friends

  1086. come to Christ

  1087. and now she was

  1088. a bit older, she

  1089. had a couple of

  1090. kids and she

  1091. just, time was

  1092. taken up with

  1093. her children.

  1094. And she was

  1095. downcast because

  1096. she didn't feel

  1097. like she was

  1098. fulfilling the

  1099. great commission

  1100. and her minister

  1101. said to her,

  1102. your mission field

  1103. is your children.

  1104. That's your

  1105. primary focus.

  1106. You should be

  1107. teaching them,

  1108. praying for them.

  1109. Maybe that is an

  1110. encouragement to

  1111. some of you.

  1112. So we go to

  1113. make disciples and

  1114. secondly, we make

  1115. disciples by

  1116. baptising.

  1117. Go therefore and

  1118. make disciples of

  1119. all nations,

  1120. baptising them in

  1121. the name of the

  1122. Father and of the

  1123. Son and of the

  1124. Holy Spirit.

  1125. That's interesting,

  1126. isn't it?

  1127. It's interesting,

  1128. why does Jesus

  1129. think baptism is

  1130. so important?

  1131. I mean, isn't

  1132. baptism just an

  1133. optional extra?

  1134. That's the way a

  1135. lot of people think

  1136. about baptism,

  1137. isn't it?

  1138. It's clearly

  1139. vital to Jesus

  1140. that we baptise

  1141. people.

  1142. There are many

  1143. reasons why, but

  1144. I think in

  1145. context, the

  1146. main reason is

  1147. because it's

  1148. the mark, it's

  1149. the physical

  1150. sign, if you

  1151. will, that you

  1152. have been

  1153. initiated into

  1154. the school of

  1155. Jesus Christ and

  1156. you have begun

  1157. his discipleship

  1158. lessons.

  1159. I mean, that's

  1160. what it means to

  1161. be a disciple,

  1162. it means to be

  1163. a learner, a

  1164. follower, someone

  1165. who sits, as it

  1166. were, at the

  1167. feet of Jesus

  1168. and listens to

  1169. him.

  1170. baptism marks

  1171. you out as

  1172. belonging exclusively

  1173. to him.

  1174. It's a gracious

  1175. sign and seal and

  1176. mark that he puts

  1177. upon you and

  1178. says, now come, I

  1179. love you, now

  1180. learn from me,

  1181. learn in my

  1182. glorious school.

  1183. Baptism, I think,

  1184. is a bit like a

  1185. wedding ring.

1186. You know how in a

  1187. marriage, the

  1188. husband and the

  1189. wife exchange

  1190. rings and those

  1191. rings signify

  1192. that they belong

  1193. exclusively to

  1194. one another.

  1195. In this deep,

  1196. personal, intimate

  1197. relationship,

  1198. baptism is, as it

  1199. were, the wedding

  1200. ring that God

  1201. places upon the

  1202. fingers of his

  1203. disciples.

  1204. And he says to

  1205. them in their

  1206. baptism, I love

  1207. you, you are

  1208. mine.

  1209. And that's why

  1210. I think Jesus'

  1211. disciples are

  1212. baptized into the

  1213. new covenant

  1214. name of God.

  1215. The God who is

  1216. one and the God

  1217. who is three.

  1218. God the Father,

  1219. God the Son,

  1220. and God the

  1221. Holy Spirit.

  1222. When you were

  1223. baptized, my

  1224. friends, when you

  1225. were baptized, God

  1226. the Father, God

  1227. the Son, and God

  1228. the Holy Spirit all

  1229. said to you, whether

  1230. you were aware of

  1231. it or not, they

  1232. all said to you

  1233. with one unified

  1234. voice, I love

  1235. you, and I have

  1236. set you apart for

  1237. myself.

  1238. You are my

  1239. disciples.

  1240. Now learn from

  1241. me, and go out

  1242. in my name.

  1243. So we make

  1244. disciples by going,

  1245. by baptizing, and

  1246. then finally by

  1247. teaching.

  1248. Go therefore, make

  1249. disciples of all

  1250. nations, baptizing

  1251. them into the name

  1252. of the Father, the

  1253. Son, and the

  1254. Holy Spirit, teaching

  1255. them to observe all

  1256. that I have

  1257. commanded you.

  1258. You see, Jesus'

  1259. disciples, they need

  1260. to grow up.

  1261. We need to, we

  1262. need to mature,

  1263. don't we?

  1264. We need to be

  1265. nurtured in our

  1266. faith.

  1267. In fact, I think

  1268. that's actually where

  1269. the emphasis in many

  1270. ways lies.

  1271. Jesus doesn't say,

  1272. go and make

  1273. Christians.

  1274. That's, as it

  1275. were, his job.

  1276. He says, go and

  1277. make disciples.

  1278. Train people up.

  1279. Yes, proclaim the

  1280. gospel, seek

  1281. converts, of course.

  1282. It doesn't exclude

  1283. that in any way.

  1284. But the emphasis, I

  1285. think, is on training

  1286. people up, making

  1287. disciples.

1288. And we need to be

  1289. taught.

  1290. We need to be

  1291. taught if we're to

  1292. grow up in the

  1293. ways of Christ,

  1294. don't we?

  1295. If we're going to

  1296. graduate from being

  1297. babes in Christ to

  1298. mature adults, we

  1299. need to be taught.

1300. And what is it we

  1301. need to be taught?

  1302. All that Jesus has

  1303. commanded.

  1304. The whole truth

  1305. of God's, from

  1306. Genesis 1 through

  1307. to Revelation 22,

  1308. I think it is.

  1309. The whole Bible.

  1310. We need to expose

  1311. ourselves to it.

  1312. We need to sit

  1313. under the preaching

  1314. and the teaching of

  1315. his words.

  1316. And we are to

  1317. observe all that

  1318. he's commanded.

  1319. His teaching is

  1320. intensely practical.

  1321. And this is, I

  1322. would say, the

  1323. particular responsibility

  1324. of ordained

  1325. ministers, those

  1326. men that God has

  1327. set apart to

  1328. preach and to

  1329. teach his

  1330. words.

  1331. It's here, it's

  1332. right here, right

  1333. now, that is the

  1334. key element of

  1335. your discipleship.

  1336. Yes, one-on-ones

  1337. are very, very

  1338. useful.

  1339. Home groups are

  1340. very useful.

  1341. But it's right

  1342. here, right now,

  1343. at the worship

  1344. service, sitting

  1345. under the preached

  1346. words, the

  1347. authoritative

  1348. preaching of God's

  1349. word, that you

  1350. are being

  1351. discipled, that you

  1352. are being

  1353. assured, that you

  1354. are being nurtured

  1355. in the ways of

  1356. Christ.

  1357. I remember when I

  1358. was at primary

  1359. school, I thought I

  1360. knew it all.

  1361. I thought I was so

  1362. clever, and then I

  1363. went to secondary

  1364. school, and I

  1365. realised I didn't,

  1366. but after a few

  1367. years, I again

  1368. thought I knew it

  1369. all.

  1370. And then I went

  1371. off to university,

  1372. and I quickly

  1373. discovered that I

  1374. didn't know it

  1375. all.

  1376. There was a whole

  1377. ocean of knowledge

  1378. out there that I

  1379. would never grasp,

  1380. and the older I

  1381. get, the more I

  1382. realise is how

  1383. little I do know.

  1384. As I study God's

  1385. word, there's more

  1386. and more that I

  1387. am just completely

  1388. ignorant of.

  1389. And it's a bit

  1390. like that in the

  1391. school of Christ.

  1392. We are students in

  1393. his school, and we

  1394. are growing in

  1395. knowledge, but the

  1396. more that we sit

  1397. at the feet of

  1398. Jesus, the more

  1399. we realise we'll

  1400. never plumb the

  1401. depths of his

  1402. glory and his

  1403. truth.

  1404. But this is the

  1405. best school

  1406. imaginable.

  1407. Let me just

  1408. stress that.

  1409. I know perhaps

  1410. some of you,

  1411. school isn't such

  1412. a happy experience,

  1413. or perhaps wasn't

  1414. such a happy

  1415. experience when you

  1416. were younger, but

  1417. this is the best

  1418. school imaginable,

  1419. because Jesus is

  1420. the teacher.

  1421. He knows all, and

  1422. he is merciful to

  1423. you.

  1424. And sometimes we

  1425. get things wrong,

  1426. don't we?

  1427. We make errors.

  1428. We don't always

  1429. observe all that he

  1430. commands us to do.

  1431. But every day we

  1432. fall short, don't

  1433. we?

  1434. And he's not a

  1435. teacher that brings

  1436. out the cane.

  1437. I know they don't

  1438. have canes anymore.

  1439. He's not that sort

  1440. of teacher that

  1441. slaps you down

  1442. when you get it

  1443. wrong.

  1444. He's the sort of

  1445. teacher that says,

  1446. don't worry.

  1447. He picks you up

  1448. again.

  1449. He's merciful.

  1450. He's kind.

  1451. He's patient.

  1452. So Jesus'

  1453. program is what

  1454. directs mission.

  1455. And then finally,

  1456. we see that Jesus'

  1457. presence is what

  1458. sustains mission.

  1459. His presence is

  1460. what sustains

  1461. mission.

  1462. And behold,

  1463. I am with you

  1464. always to the

  1465. end of the

  1466. age.

  1467. Jesus promises

  1468. to his disciples

  1469. that he will

  1470. sustain them in

  1471. their work of

  1472. making disciples

  1473. all the way up

  1474. to the ends of

  1475. history.

  1476. Now of course,

  1477. Jesus isn't going

  1478. to be with his

  1479. disciples bodily.

  1480. He's about to

  1481. ascend back up

  1482. into heaven.

  1483. But he will be

  1484. with them

  1485. spiritually.

  1486. And if you

  1487. can see my

  1488. notes, you

  1489. see that I've

  1490. got a capital

  1491. S there.

  1492. He will be

  1493. with them by

  1494. his Holy Spirit

  1495. whom he will

  1496. send out upon

  1497. them at

  1498. Pentecost.

  1499. This is how

  1500. Jesus continues

  1501. to be with

  1502. his church

  1503. today.

  1504. This is how

  1505. he is with

  1506. you right now.

  1507. He is with

  1508. you by his

  1509. Holy Spirit.

  1510. And in fact,

  1511. this is

  1512. fascinating,

  1513. I think.

  1514. Jesus has

  1515. even said

  1516. that it is

  1517. to the

  1518. disciples'

  1519. advantage

  1520. that he

  1521. goes away

  1522. so that the

  1523. helper, the

  1524. Holy Spirit,

  1525. can come to

  1526. them.

  1527. He talks about

  1528. that in

  1529. John chapter

    John 16 chapter mention

  1530. 16.

  1531. It's actually

  1532. better for us

  1533. that he is

  1534. not here

  1535. bodily,

  1536. but

  1537. spiritually.

  1538. do you

  1539. ever think,

  1540. I think

  1541. this anyway,

  1542. do you

  1543. ever think

  1544. that your

  1545. church

  1546. would be

  1547. better off

  1548. if only

  1549. Jesus were

  1550. actually here

  1551. in the

  1552. flesh?

  1553. Well, let me

  1554. put it this

  1555. way.

  1556. This is what

  1557. will bring it

  1558. home to you

  1559. perhaps.

  1560. Would you

  1561. rather have

  1562. me,

  1563. or Paul,

  1564. or Stuart

  1565. preaching to you

  1566. right now,

  1567. or Jesus?

  1568. It's a bit

  1569. of a no-brainer,

  1570. I suppose.

  1571. But Jesus

  1572. is saying

  1573. that it's

  1574. actually to

  1575. our advantage

  1576. that he

  1577. will go

  1578. away,

  1579. and that the

  1580. Spirit will

  1581. come, and

  1582. that is how

  1583. he will be

  1584. present with

  1585. us.

  1586. You are

  1587. actually better

  1588. off, we

  1589. are better

  1590. off now,

  1591. than the

  1592. disciples were

  1593. during his

  1594. 33 years

  1595. on this

  1596. earth.

  1597. And there

  1598. are many

  1599. reasons for

  1600. this, but

  1601. here's one.

  1602. Now the

  1603. proclamation of

  1604. the gospel can

  1605. indeed go to

  1606. all nations,

  1607. to the

  1608. farthest

  1609. shores.

  1610. You see, if it

  1611. depended upon

  1612. Jesus being

  1613. here bodily,

  1614. then there's a

  1615. sense in which

  1616. the gospel could

  1617. only really go

  1618. where Jesus

  1619. himself was,

  1620. located.

  1621. it.

  1622. But now we

  1623. can go to

  1624. all nations,

  1625. because by

  1626. his Spirit he

  1627. is present with

  1628. his people,

  1629. wherever they

  1630. go, wherever

  1631. his disciples

  1632. go, they go

  1633. in the presence

  1634. of Jesus, by

  1635. his Spirit.

  1636. And that is a

  1637. presence that

  1638. lifts us, that

  1639. is a presence

  1640. that gives us

  1641. confidence and

  1642. boldness to

  1643. actually go to

  1644. all nations.

  1645. I remember

  1646. when I was at

  1647. Duke Street a

  1648. few years ago

  1649. now, we

  1650. cobbled together

  1651. a cricket team,

  1652. and we were

  1653. not a particularly

  1654. good cricket team,

  1655. let me tell you.

  1656. I even had me

  1657. opening the

  1658. batting, just

  1659. because I could

  1660. basically play a

  1661. sort of forward

  1662. defensive, I knew

  1663. how to keep a

  1664. straight bat.

  1665. We were a pretty

  1666. poor cricket team,

  1667. but we did have

  1668. one guy who was

  1669. very, very, very

  1670. good, it was

  1671. this South African

  1672. called Mike,

  1673. and his

  1674. sheer presence

  1675. with us lifted

  1676. the team, because

  1677. he's someone that

  1678. hit six virtually

  1679. every delivery, and

  1680. he had a really

  1681. fast delivery.

  1682. He was just a

  1683. great player.

  1684. I remember we

  1685. were always really

  1686. worried when we

  1687. gathered together

  1688. and he wasn't

  1689. there yet, he

  1690. was running a bit

  1691. late, but as

  1692. soon as he came

  1693. it lifted us and

  1694. we all played at

  1695. least a little bit

  1696. better as a

  1697. result.

  1698. If Jesus were

  1699. not with us,

  1700. by the power of

  1701. his Holy Spirit,

  1702. we would soon

  1703. lose heart,

  1704. wouldn't we?

  1705. We would give

  1706. up, we would

  1707. go home.

  1708. But Jesus'

  1709. presence with us

  1710. at all times

  1711. gives us great

  1712. boldness and

  1713. great confidence.

  1714. And it means

  1715. that even when

  1716. only two or

  1717. three people

  1718. gather together,

  1719. sure, that's

  1720. disheartening,

  1721. but we don't

  1722. despair because

  1723. Jesus is with

  1724. us.

  1725. You see, Jesus

  1726. is as much

  1727. with us in

  1728. our twos and

  1729. in our threes

  1730. as he is in

  1731. our hundreds

  1732. and our

  1733. thousands.

  1734. And sometimes

  1735. it might not

  1736. feel as if

  1737. Jesus is with

  1738. you.

  1739. It might not

  1740. feel that way,

  1741. but it is a

  1742. fact.

  1743. It's a promise.

  1744. Jesus says,

  1745. I will be with

  1746. you always.

  1747. Not just most

  1748. of the time,

  1749. but always,

  1750. to the end of

  1751. the age, to the

  1752. end of history,

  1753. I will be with

  1754. you at all

  1755. times.

  1756. Sometimes, when

  1757. you're perhaps

  1758. going through

  1759. difficult periods,

  1760. when the dark

  1761. clouds gather, it

  1762. doesn't feel as

  1763. if Jesus is with

  1764. you.

  1765. When your church

  1766. is struggling,

  1767. as no doubt it

  1768. has done, or

  1769. perhaps it will

  1770. in the future,

  1771. it may not feel

  1772. as if Jesus is

  1773. with you.

  1774. But it is a

  1775. fact.

  1776. And we base

  1777. our lives, we

  1778. base our faith,

  1779. not upon the way

  1780. we feel, but

  1781. upon what is

  1782. revealed to us,

  1783. what is fact,

  1784. what is true.

  1785. And the fact

  1786. is, as Jesus

  1787. himself says

  1788. here, he is

  1789. with us always.

  1790. He will be with

  1791. you wherever you

  1792. go, as you go

  1793. out into work

  1794. during the week,

  1795. as you face a

  1796. difficult boss,

  1797. as you face

  1798. struggles in

  1799. your home,

  1800. difficulties at

  1801. school,

  1802. difficulties in

  1803. your neighbourhood,

  1804. wherever it

  1805. might be, Jesus

  1806. goes with you.

  1807. You are never

  1808. alone.

  1809. His abiding

  1810. presence sustains

  1811. you and keeps

  1812. you going.

  1813. And so we see

  1814. that we have

  1815. great responsibility

  1816. as Christians.

  1817. This is rightly

  1818. called, I think,

  1819. the Great

  1820. Commission.

  1821. It is indeed

  1822. a Great

  1823. Commission.

  1824. This is the

  1825. point of the

  1826. Church.

  1827. This is the

  1828. purpose of the

  1829. Church.

  1830. To worship

  1831. Christ by

  1832. making disciples

  1833. of all nations,

  1834. by going, by

  1835. baptising, by

  1836. teaching.

  1837. There is so

  1838. much for us

  1839. to do.

  1840. so much

  1841. for us to

  1842. accomplish.

  1843. And sometimes

  1844. it can feel

  1845. like there is

  1846. too much.

  1847. That it is in

  1848. fact too

  1849. great a

  1850. commission.

  1851. How can we

  1852. ever cope?

  1853. Let me finish

  1854. with this.

  1855. Always remember

  1856. that the

  1857. Great

  1858. Commission

  1859. is given

  1860. by the

  1861. Great

  1862. Commissioner

  1863. himself.

  1864. It is

  1865. given by

  1866. the

  1867. One

  1868. who

  1869. completed

  1870. his

  1871. own

  1872. Great

  1873. Commission.

  1874. It is

  1875. given by

  1876. the One

  1877. who does

  1878. now possess

  1879. all authority

  1880. over heaven

  1881. and earth,

  1882. who has

  1883. an all

  1884. conquering

  1885. power.

  1886. It is

  1887. given by

  1888. the One

  1889. who will

  1890. be with

  1891. you

  1892. always,

  1893. wherever

  1894. you go,

  1895. to the

  1896. end of

  1897. the age.

  1898. Yes,

  1899. it is a

  1900. Great

  1901. Commission,

  1902. but you,

  1903. my friends,

  1904. you have

  1905. a far,

  1906. far

  1907. greater

  1908. commission.

  1909. Let's

  1910. praise and

  1911. cry.
