  1. Well, have you ever heard it said that the Bible is just stuff made up by men, it's just human ideas written down.

  2. ! Have you ever heard someone say that? Or have you ever heard people say, it doesn't matter what you believe, provided you're sincere about it.

  3. If you follow a religion, that's fine, you just need to be sincere about it, and if you are, that's all that really matters.

  4. I know I've heard those things quite a lot, but in these words here, Paul attacks both of those ideas.

  5. He shows us they are false. He shows us, first of all, that what he writes is not merely man's ideas, but it's from God.

  6. And he shows us that being sincere about something is no great help.

  7. You can be sincere about being able to fly and jump out a window and crash land and kill yourself.

  8. Sincerity makes no difference. What is important is what you believe in.

  9. I've heard a couple of things that Paul is going to show us in these words.

  10. Let me just put a bit of context here. Paul is writing to this young church because he is very worried that they are trying to add to the good news message of Jesus.

  11. And in doing so, they're destroying the good news and are potentially making a shipwreck of their lives.

  12. But there was an accusation that the false teachers were using.

  13. They were saying, don't listen to this guy Paul. What does he know? He's just trying to be popular with people.

  14. He's just teaching other human ideas. He's just passing on ideas he's already heard.

  15. And people today say that kind of thing, don't they?

  16. It's, you know, the Bible, that's just some guy's ideas.

  17. Some men wrote it down. It has no authority.

  18. Well, look at what Paul says, first of all, and why the reason the message he is preaching is God's message, not his message.

  19. We'll look at his argument there first, why this is God's message, not a man's message or his message.

  20. And then secondly, we'll see how this gospel, how meeting Jesus Christ, completely transformed Saul's life.

  21. And as we meet Jesus Christ, he will completely transform our lives too.

  22. So let's look at that. First of all, you can see Paul's main point if you look at verse 11.

  23. I would have you know, brothers, that the gospel, the good news message that was preached by me is not man's gospel.

  24. This isn't a human idea.

  25. I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ.

  26. In other words, this came straight to me from the Lord Jesus himself.

  27. God revealed this message to me.

  28. Now what's his evidence for that? That's quite a bold claim, isn't it?

  29. Muhammad made a similar claim.

  30. God spoke to him up the mountain.

  31. He wrote down the Koran.

  32. Does Paul have any better evidence?

  33. Well, yes, he does.

  34. He says the evidence is the change God has brought about in me.

  35. You see his old way of life.

  36. Look at verse 13.

  37. You've heard about my former way of life.

  38. How I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it.

  39. We call it a snapshot of that in the reading from Acts.

  40. The word there for try to destroy it is a word also used in the original language for burning down villages.

  41. It means destroy.

  42. It's like an act of war.

  43. And that was Paul's aim.

  44. Why?

  45. Because he was zealous, he says, for the traditions of his fathers.

  46. In other words, for the religious traditions passed down to him.

  47. He thought he was doing God's job.

  48. Persecuting this church.

  49. Trying to destroy this church.

  50. He thought it was heresy.

  51. He thought anyone who called Jesus Lord and God was a heretic who deserved death.

  52. So as Paul headed to Damascus, he thought he was on God's side.

  53. He thought he was doing God's work.

  54. He didn't think he needed forgiveness.

  55. He thought he was in the right.

  56. So he had this attitude towards Christ, this attitude towards the church.

  57. You see his attitude towards himself as well.

  58. Verse 14.

  59. I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my own age, among my own people.

  60. He was a man on a stellar career path.

  61. Well respected, well admired, great authority.

  62. So what changed?

  63. Well, God grabbed him, didn't he?

  64. Look at how God grabbed him.

  65. Verse 15.

  66. When he, that is God, who had set me apart before I was born,

  67. and he called me by his grace,

  68. was pleased to reveal his son to me,

  69. in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles.

  70. So God changed Paul's life around completely.

  71. He revealed Jesus to him.

  72. He revealed Jesus to him.

  73. At that point, on the road to Damascus,

  74. Saul made a wonderful discovery and a terrible discovery.

  75. The terrible discovery was that this Jesus,

  76. whom he had been trying to obliterate,

  77. this Jesus who he stopped people worshipping,

  78. that this Jesus was actually alive and kicking,

  79. and was God's own son.

  80. That was a terrible discovery.

  81. But the wonderful discovery,

  82. was that Saul, like Paul,

  83. like Jeremiah the prophet in the Old Testament,

  84. had been set apart by God from before his birth even.

  85. God had a purpose for him.

  86. And Paul, for the sake of showing the Galatians,

  87. and showing us,

  88. that this is all,

  89. is God's message he's preaching,

  90. underlines it straight away.

  91. Verse 16.

  92. I did not immediately consult with anyone,

  93. nor did I go up to Jerusalem,

  94. for those who were apostles before me.

  95. In other words, Saul's saying,

  96. I got this message,

  97. God revealed Jesus to me.

  98. He revealed the truth to me.

  99. And I got it straight from God.

  100. I didn't need to go and consult with the leaders in Jerusalem.

  101. I didn't need to get it verified by somebody else.

  102. Rather, I went off to do what God had told me to do.

  103. You see what Paul is arguing here.

  104. He wants us to know,

  105. that the message he preached,

  106. is not something he made up.

  107. It's not something other people told him,

  108. or a rumour that was going around at the time.

  109. It's not something he had to check out with other people.

  110. Rather, it was a message God gave him,

  111. to preach to others.

  112. Now that's important,

  113. because in the days Paul wrote this letter,

  114. there were people saying,

  115. he wasn't really teaching the truth,

  116. it was just his own ideas.

  117. People today love to dismiss,

  118. love the Bible,

  119. particularly love to dismiss the Apostle Paul,

  120. don't they?

  121. Oh, he's a male chauvinist.

  122. Oh, he's too fundamentalist.

  123. He's not inclusive enough.

  124. His attitude to sexuality is all wrong.

  125. He's not enlightened enough.

  126. We've grown up,

  127. we've grown past his ideas.

  128. And yet Paul claims,

  129. the message he had,

  130. came straight from God.

  131. What's the evidence?

  132. Well, why else would he turn his back on a promising career?

  133. Why else would he forego,

  134. the status and privilege he had,

  135. in Judaism of the day?

  136. To become an outlaw,

  137. who was hounded by the Jews,

  138. wherever he went.

  139. The answer surely is that God changed his life around.

  140. As Paul was going to Damascus,

  141. he had no felt need of Jesus.

  142. He had no felt need of forgiveness.

  143. But he was shocked,

  144. and transformed by what God did.

  145. We'll see in a moment exactly how he was transformed.

  146. I hope we can see first of all,

  147. that Paul's main point here,

  148. the message he received,

  149. the message he preaches,

  150. the message he writes down here,

  151. the message we have in our Bible,

  152. is not man-made.

  153. It's not a human idea.

  154. It comes from God.

  155. And one little element of the evidence we have for that,

  156. is how Paul's life was turned around.

  157. But let's look more closely at how Paul's life was turned around.

  158. In what ways was it changed?

  159. We'll see how encountering the true Jesus changed him,

  160. and can change us.

  161. It really changed in three different ways particularly.

  162. It changed Paul's view of himself.

  163. It changed the goal of Paul's life.

  164. It changed the motivation for Paul's actions.

  165. So first of all,

  166. it changed Paul's view of himself.

  167. See, Paul thought he was a really good guy.

  168. Look at verse 14.

  169. I was advancing Judaism beyond many of my own age,

  170. among my people.

  171. So extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers.

  172. He's on this great career path.

  173. Philippians chapter 3, verse 6,

    Philippians 3:6

  174. talking about his former life.

  175. He says,

  176. As for righteousness under the law,

  177. I was blameless.

  178. People looked at me,

  179. and I was perfect,

  180. according to the religious rules of the day.

  181. See, he thought all his efforts

  182. put him in God's good book.

  183. He thought he was a really nice guy.

  184. He thought he was doing God a massive favour.

  185. And yet he was then shocked, wasn't he?

  186. What did God do?

  187. He revealed Jesus Christ to him.

  188. You see that?

  189. Verse 12.

  190. I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ.

  191. Verse 16.

  192. God was pleased to reveal his son to me.

  193. Now why did God do it?

  194. It was by grace, wasn't it?

  195. Verse 15.

  196. When he set me apart from before I was born,

  197. he called me by his grace.

  198. God didn't do it, in other words,

  199. because Paul was good,

  200. because Paul was nice,

  201. because Paul was religious.

  202. God did it entirely

  203. out of his own generous kindness,

  204. extravagant kindness,

  205. to an undeserving man.

  206. So why God did it?

  207. What did God do?

  208. He revealed his son Jesus.

  209. He wanted Paul to have a right view of Jesus,

  210. and having a right view of Jesus,

  211. he had a right view of himself.

  212. Now what did Paul understand?

  213. What did Paul grasp

  214. as God revealed his son to him?

  215. Has he got that revelation of Jesus

  216. on the road to Damascus?

  217. Well we can say lots of things.

  218. Let's just say two things, first of all.

  219. First of all,

  220. Paul saw at last

  221. that Jesus is the eternal son of God

  222. in human flesh.

  223. That Jesus is the eternal son of God

  224. in human flesh.

  225. He was not a heretic

  226. claiming to be God.

  227. He was in fact

  228. the second person of the Trinity.

  229. God on earth.

  230. Now raised new life again.

  231. That's important.

  232. That's important for Paul,

  233. because

  234. as a Jew

  235. he'd always been brought up

  236. to believe that God is just one

  237. and there is only one God.

  238. And he's suddenly

  239. confronted with Jesus

  240. as the son of God.

  241. It's revealed to him

  242. that God is three persons in one.

  243. Yes, God is a unity,

  244. is one Godhead,

  245. yet there's Father, Son and Spirit

  246. in the one Godhead.

  247. And Saul

  248. finds Jesus revealed to him.

  249. So he realises

  250. Jesus is not some creation,

  251. not some mere mortal,

  252. he's not some being

  253. somewhere between God and man

  254. as some different sects

  255. and cults teach.

  256. He is God eternal himself.

  257. And secondly,

  258. Saul found out

  259. that Jesus is God's promised king.

  260. So in the Old Testament,

  261. for example,

  262. in 2 Samuel chapter 7,

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  263. the son of God

  264. is a title

  265. for God's chosen king

  266. for his people.

  267. So Saul found that

  268. Jesus is God himself,

  269. but also Jesus is

  270. God's ruler and king.

  271. So the very one

  272. Saul would be trying

  273. to put an end to

  274. was in fact the one

  275. whom God was using

  276. to fulfil his purposes.

  277. So in that moment

  278. that Saul sees

  279. Jesus revealed to him,

  280. he completely changes

  281. his view of himself.

  282. He's no longer a good guy

  283. doing God's work.

  284. He now sees

  285. he is God's enemy.

  286. He is God's enemy.

  287. He thought his religious zeal

  288. and niceness was good.

  289. Actually,

  290. it was a way of rebelling

  291. against God.

  292. And that's actually

  293. a warning to all of us,

  294. isn't it?

  295. We can think we're good people,

  296. we can think we're very religious,

  297. we're doing nice things

  298. for God,

  299. and yet actually

  300. if we don't grasp

  301. who Jesus is,

  302. however zealous we are,

  303. however enthusiastic we are,

  304. we can be running

  305. headlong against God's program

  306. and God's ways.

  307. And we can be

  308. God's enemies.

  309. So that's the first thing

  310. that was transformed

  311. in Saul.

  312. His view of himself

  313. that was all caught up

  314. with his view of Jesus.

  315. The second thing

  316. that was transformed

  317. was his whole goal

  318. of his life.

  319. The goal of his life

  320. was turned upside down.

  321. See,

  322. formerly

  323. his goal was to

  324. persecute and destroy

  325. the church,

  326. wasn't it?

  327. But now

  328. the persecutor

  329. has turned preacher.

  330. Verse 16,

  331. God called on him.

  332. God is pleased

  333. to reveal his son to me

  334. in order that I may

  335. preach him among the Gentiles.

  336. As a good Jew,

  337. it must have been

  338. an absolutely horrendous idea

  339. for Saul

  340. to go to the Gentiles.

  341. But now

  342. his life is so transformed

  343. that instead of trying

  344. to put an end

  345. to the church,

  346. he's preaching

  347. so the church is built up.

  348. Not only that,

  349. he's going to the Gentiles,

  350. his very enemies,

  351. to preach that.

  352. The persecutor

  353. turns into the preacher.

  354. He has a new goal

  355. in his life

  356. because that is the purpose

  357. which God saved him.

  358. Now,

  359. you and I

  360. are not called to be

  361. the apostles to the Gentiles.

  362. That only happened

  363. to Saul.

  364. But we all live life

  365. with some goal,

  366. don't we?

  367. And as I read this,

  368. I have to ask myself,

  369. truly,

  370. what is my goal?

  371. Am I just interested

  372. in my own career?

  373. As Saul also was,

  374. part of his persecuting

  375. the church,

  376. was to build his own

  377. career in Judaism.

  378. Am I interested

  379. in my own reputation

  380. as Saul was?

  381. Or am I primarily,

  382. is my goal primarily

  383. to preach Jesus Christ

  384. to let others know

  385. this glorious news

  386. that we can be forgiven

  387. and made whole again

  388. by the grace of God

  389. in the Lord Jesus

  390. and not by our own

  391. religious works?

  392. What's your goal?

  393. What's your goal?

  394. What do you desire in life?

  395. What is the longing

  396. of your heart?

  397. And how does that line up

  398. with God's great program?

  399. Well, Saul had a new view

  400. of himself and of Jesus.

  401. He completely transformed

  402. the goal in his life.

  403. And thirdly,

  404. he had a completely

  405. transformed motivation.

  406. Look at verse 10.

  407. See what his old motivation was

  408. and what his new motivation is.

  409. Verse 10.

  410. For am I seeking

  411. the approval of man

  412. or of God?

  413. Or am I trying

  414. to please man?

  415. If I was still

  416. trying to please man,

  417. I would not be

  418. a servant of Christ.

  419. Literally,

  420. a slave of Christ.

  421. See what Paul is saying

  422. about his old way of life?

  423. Actually,

  424. he was a people pleaser.

  425. Actually,

  426. he was a people pleaser.

  427. That's what he wanted to do.

  428. And for Paul,

  429. for Saul as he was then,

  430. being deeply religious

  431. was a great way

  432. of being a people pleaser.

  433. We please people

  434. for all sorts of reasons,

  435. don't we?

  436. And being religious

  437. can be a great way

  438. of pleasing other people,

  439. can't they?

  440. It might be

  441. we can please our parents

  442. when we're younger

  443. because they take us

  444. along to church

  445. or to the mosque

  446. or to the temple

  447. or whatever.

  448. Sometimes we can

  449. please other people

  450. by our devotion

  451. because they're impressed

  452. with us.

  453. So we go up in their views

  454. because we're serving

  455. so hard in church

  456. or we are so involved

  457. in so many things.

  458. Sometimes we just want

  459. to please other people

  460. because we want them

  461. to like us,

  462. don't we?

  463. And whenever people pleasing

  464. is our real motive,

  465. we just end up being

  466. a slave to someone

  467. else's desires,

  468. don't we?

  469. Whether that's

  470. our parents

  471. or our family

  472. or our friends

  473. or to the fashions

  474. and customs of the age.

  475. And Paul is confessing here

  476. he was a people pleaser.

  477. That got him promoted.

  478. He's advancing beyond others

  479. in his age

  480. in Judaism.

  481. There are people

  482. following him

  483. helping him

  484. going to Damascus.

  485. And yet,

  486. his motives

  487. have now changed.

  488. His motives

  489. have now changed.

  490. He's now

  491. trying to please God.

  492. If I was still

  493. trying to please man,

  494. I would not be

  495. a servant of Christ.

  496. You can see that

  497. if you look down

  498. at the end of the story.

  499. Verses 18 to 24.

  500. We won't read it

  501. all again now.

  502. But as soon as God

  503. has got hold of his life,

  504. what does he do?

  505. He doesn't go out

  506. to Jerusalem

  507. to get in

  508. with the people

  509. in power in that day

  510. in the church.

  511. He goes out

  512. into Arabia.

  513. Presumably to preach

  514. the gospel for three years

  515. is when he then

  516. comes back to Damascus.

  517. If we read on

  518. in Acts chapter 9

    Acts 9 chapter mention

  519. we find he had to

  520. lower it out of the basket.

  521. Rumor must have

  522. got back to the king

  523. in Damascus.

  524. But this man

  525. is a troublemaker.

  526. Get rid of him.

  527. So Saul immediately

  528. goes to preach

  529. the gospel

  530. because that's

  531. what he's been

  532. called to do.

  533. He immediately

  534. doesn't go

  535. to become popular

  536. unsuccessful.

  537. He isn't even

  538. known in person

  539. we read in verses 23

  540. to the people

  541. the Christians

  542. in Judea.

  543. Because none of that

  544. mattered.

  545. But what did matter?

  546. Look at verse 24.

  547. They heard that Saul

  548. was now preaching

  549. the gospel.

  550. Preaching the faith

  551. he once tried to destroy.

  552. And they glorified

  553. God because of me.

  554. See how Paul's

  555. motivation has changed

  556. around?

  557. He's no longer

  558. pleasing men

  559. but he's pleasing God.

  560. He wants God

  561. to be glorified.

  562. He wants Christ

  563. to be made known.

  564. Now what about me?

  565. What about you?

  566. Are we people pleasers?

  567. Or are we God pleasers?

  568. If I look at my own heart

  569. what lies at the bottom

  570. of all my desire

  571. to please other people?

  572. Well it's actually

  573. fear isn't it?

  574. Fear of rejection.

  575. Fear of missing out.

  576. Fear of not being popular.

  577. Fear of offending.

  578. But what Saul found

  579. is that having been

  580. accepted by God's grace

  581. having been set apart

  582. having been loved

  583. and chosen by the

  584. living God for a purpose

  585. there's no fear left

  586. is there?

  587. See the gospel

  588. deals with our insecurity.

  589. If we know

  590. we're accepted by God

  591. not because of what

  592. we do but because

  593. of what Christ has done

  594. then it matters

  595. a whole lot less

  596. if other people

  597. do not accept us.

  598. And so pleasing

  599. other people

  600. can become a whole lot

  601. less important

  602. than pleasing the God

  603. who loved us

  604. and called us

  605. and saved us.

  606. Why should we need

  607. the praise and

  608. affirmation of people

  609. when in Christ

  610. God calls us

  611. his beloved children?

  612. You see how this

  613. worked out in Saul's life

  614. he was happy to lose

  615. his status

  616. in Judaism.

  617. Happy to lose

  618. the reputation he had.

  619. Happy to be hounded

  620. and persecuted

  621. as we see if you read

  622. on through his life story.

  623. Because what he really

  624. wanted was to

  625. please God

  626. and not please people.

  627. There's a song

  628. we sometimes sang

  629. at my old church

  630. which has this great verse

  631. Take all my cravings

  632. for vain recognition

  633. fleshly indulgence

  634. and worldly ambition

  635. I want so much

  636. Lord to make you

  637. the focus

  638. to serve you

  639. in secret

  640. and never be noticed.

  641. And I think

  642. Saul could say that

  643. because he'd been

  644. transformed by

  645. meeting Jesus Christ.

  646. He had a new view

  647. of himself

  648. that he was a rebel

  649. who desperately

  650. needed God's grace.

  651. He had a new

  652. change of the goal

  653. of his life.

  654. His goal came

  655. to preach Christ

  656. instead of to

  657. kill off the church.

  658. It changed his

  659. motivation in life.

  660. His motivation

  661. was now the glory

  662. of God

  663. rather than

  664. pleasing other people.

  665. If we meet Jesus

  666. day by day

  667. he will change us too.

  668. Let's pray shall we?
