  1. I don't know how many of you have heard of song by the Boontown Rats, I Don't Like Mondays.

  2. I remember that I bought this record in this country, in this city, in London, when I was a teenager.

  3. And every time I was going to secondary school, the song was in my head, no?

  4. Tell me why, tell me why, I don't like Mondays.

  5. And Mondays are a depressing day for many people.

  6. And you wonder why, of course, it's got to do with the thing you have to do with the beginning of a new week.

  7. Then you realize how much is the burden of your life.

  8. I don't know if you are aware that there is more possibilities that you have a heart attack on Monday than on any other day.

  9. Some say that the blood tension is so high that even you can have a stroke.

  10. And even the possibility of an ulcer, they say that it's bigger.

  11. Maybe you find a strange figure, but some people say that twice there is more the chance that people commit suicide on Monday than any other day.

  12. But, of course, we realize that this has not only to do with work, but with the purpose of it.

  13. The reason we live, why we are here for.

  14. Because idleness can be attractive if you have something to do.

  15. If you don't have anything to do, you cannot enjoy idleness.

  16. In a way, this is the problem we face, when the things we have to do are in front of us on a new week.

  17. And it's really to do with the purpose of our lives.

  18. What we are here for.

  19. And Jesus has this story, these amazing parables, which really are often striking, because it's in the end, in the tale of the story, when it's the great surprise.

  20. And here, like in most of the stories of Jesus, it's a strange end.

  21. It's not really the conclusion with respect at the end of the story.

  22. But it brings us something, not only of the perspective of Jesus Christ and his message, but the reality of our own expectations.

  23. In Jesus' day, people were waiting for better times.

  24. They call it the kingdom.

  25. The kingdom of God.

  26. When he will come and he will rule and things will be as they need to be.

  27. But in this Gospel according to Luke, it's the story of a journey.

  28. The journey of Jesus and also the announcement in the center of what he's going to do in Jerusalem.

  29. And from that very moment, he finds all these reactions to him.

  30. Why he speaks about his death, about his sacrifice, what he's going to offer, giving his own life in Jerusalem.

  31. In a way, our lives are also like a journey.

  32. And here, the Lord Jesus Christ shows us what is really the greatest goal and purpose for our lives.

  33. To live for that kingdom.

  34. And this is hope.

  35. Because without hope, there is no life at all.

  36. It's Woody Allen, I think, who says that the future is not what it used to be.

  37. And the reality is that so many doomed thinkers saying that what we have to face is even worse things that we have today.

  38. It makes us really wonder what future have we got for our lives.

  39. When we come to this life, we all have dreams, expectations, ambitions.

  40. But when you get older, like me, you start to think that finally, better forget them.

  41. Because you are not going to fulfill them anyway.

  42. And this is a hard factor we have to face very soon in our lives.

  43. The fact that these dreams and expectations cannot be achieved by ourselves.

  44. But here, the Lord proposes to us better goals and achievements.

  45. What is the purpose and the end of his kingdom?

  46. And I would like to show you this evening three reactions you find here, in the parable, about what people can think about the kingdom.

  47. First, you have the really shocking scene of those who reject this kingdom.

  48. You see that there is no future for them.

  49. Those who have said, I don't want him, ask him, they will not have him.

  50. Forever.

  51. For an eternity.

  52. Without him.

  53. And this is a shocking reality.

  54. What we face here is the danger we all have when we say that we prefer our dreams, our goals, our ambitions to what God showed us through Jesus Christ.

  55. And one day, this is the message again and again in the gospel.

  56. We will have to face him.

  57. And then he will be the king.

  58. We don't have the last word.

  59. This is the hard thing for us.

  60. To realize that we have to take a second place.

  61. He must be the first.

  62. And it is not the question if you want to, if you like to.

  63. The truth is that he is going to rule.

  64. And there is only two possibilities.

  65. Or you are under his rule, no?

  66. Or you are against his rule.

  67. And if you are against it, there is no future for you.

  68. Because the whole message of the gospel is his victory.

  69. He has finally not only got the last words, but there will be no enemies in that kingdom.

  70. No dissenting voices.

  71. Everyone will worship him.

  72. Everyone will acknowledge and assault him.

  73. Because he is the king of kings.

  74. And all kingdoms will be under his throne.

  75. And he will be forever, the whole eternity, the only king.

  76. So there are only two possibilities for us.

  77. Or we submit to him.

  78. We surrender to him.

  79. Or we will see one day what it is to resist him.

  80. And after this serious danger, we find another two reactions.

  81. And these two are surprising.

  82. Because all of us think that the purpose, the goal of our lives is what we can achieve.

  83. What we can get.

  84. But we see how different really is at the end of the day.

  85. First you have some servants who come before this king.

  86. And they show him what they have achieved with their lives.

  87. With their resources, the endowments, the talents, the minus they have received.

  88. There has been a lot of discussion in the commentaries about what does it mean, no?

  89. These minus.

  90. Some people say, well, maybe it's the gospel.

  91. What we have done with it.

  92. Others have said, the Holy Spirit, the greatest gift we can receive from the Father.

  93. That is the minus.

  94. And others think that the way we use our resources, everything we receive in this life from him.

  95. I would say that probably all those things are included in the minus.

  96. Like in so many parables, it's easy to get lost in the trees, no?

  97. Not to see the forest, the purpose of it all.

  98. And the truth is that he is not anymore with us.

  99. That is what he is saying again and again to his disciples.

  100. And as we have remembered one Ascension Day recently, we don't have our Lord upon this earth.

  101. We cannot organize pilgrimage to the Holy Land to see him.

  102. It would be a disappointment, you know?

  103. So long queues, no?

  104. So a difficult journey just to be, just for a moment, to see his face for an instant.

  105. It's a blessing for us.

  106. So the Lord says, it's better for you that I don't stay here.

  107. Because I have something better for you.

  108. That is someone.

  109. Someone who is another Christ, the Conforter, in my place, the Holy Spirit.

  110. And this is the greatest gift we can receive now.

  111. And it's interesting that this is introduced in the way the Lord Jesus speaks to us about God as our Father.

  112. He says to him, if you, who are not good, but bad parents, when your children ask you something, breath, are you going to give them a stone?

  113. When they ask you for food, are you going to give them a snake?

  114. Being not good and being evil, if you do that, why do you think your Father in Heaven is not going to give you better things?

  115. So the Lord concludes that section.

  116. Ask them the greatest gift of all, the Holy Spirit.

  117. So this is the reality we can have today.

  118. The Spirit brings us the life of the Son to us, Jesus Christ.

  119. And we can understand about Him through His testimony.

  120. It's through Him that we realize what good is to come.

  121. He is the assurance we have that we are His children.

  122. So the testimony of the Spirit goes not only with His words, but works deeply inside us.

  123. The Apostle John speaks about this inner testimony that you are children of God.

  124. The Apostle Paul in Romans 8 speaks about how this sonship awareness comes through the work of the Holy Spirit.

  125. And what a great difference makes in this life to know that you are not alone.

  126. That you don't have to face this task and existence without a Father.

  127. You are not an orphan anymore.

  128. You have God as your Father.

  129. And the Lord teaches to pray to our Father in Heaven.

  130. And you see, this is the problem of the last servant.

  131. The last servant, what view has he got of God, of the ruler, of the king?

  132. When the Master comes, his first words give us exactly the view of God.

  133. And he is so close to us, so familiar to us.

  134. He is afraid of Him.

  135. I don't know how much you have been afraid of God, but it depends on how good you feel.

  136. When you think that you have a problem with Him, it is when you realize how far you are away from Him.

  137. That is probably what Luther said when he said that before you have Christ as a friend, you have to see Him as your enemy.

  138. In a way, there is no way to come in a relationship with Him if first we don't realize the distance.

  139. How far away is from Him.

  140. But not only the distance, the fact that He has something against us.

  141. That our sin has made this big problem which we cannot resolve.

  142. Then we are afraid of that day.

  143. Some of you have the privilege of being raised in a Christian family.

  144. I am one of the few Spanish evangelicals who had that opportunity.

  145. And it is an advantage.

  146. And at the same time, of course, it can be a problem sometimes.

  147. But I remember always that this fear of what it meant the responsibility I have.

  148. When I was growing up in the 70s, we used to have a lot of comics.

  149. It was the entertainment of those days before the computers came.

  150. And there were even Christian comics.

  151. You know there is a Christian alternative for everything.

  152. We have built a subculture like that.

  153. And some who have been growing in the church, we have grown in the subculture.

  154. With the Christian music and everything Christian.

  155. And one of these comics is rather worse.

  156. A publishing company in America.

  157. Very fundamentalistic.

  158. It is called Chick Publications.

  159. Chick Publications has a very low series of comics.

  160. Very popular in the States between Americans.

  161. And one of them was the expectation of what could be the last day.

  162. And that last day, there would be a film.

  163. So, in a big screen.

  164. And you could see in the drawing all the people around the hills

  165. looking like a cinemascope screen.

  166. Well, the younger ones don't know what is cinemascope.

  167. But it was a very big screen, you know.

  168. Like in the old cinema.

  169. When the theatres were very big, you know.

  170. And there were crowds, you know.

  171. Going to the cinema on the weekends.

  172. And the nightmare I have, you know.

  173. Is that the story of that film was my life, you know.

  174. And what you will see is what I would not like you to see.

  175. The things I must say of.

  176. The realities I have.

  177. And that was a nightmare.

  178. To think that one day you have to face yourself.

  179. The reality of who you are.

  180. And this is really the greatest hopelessness of it all.

  181. And that is what that wicked servant experienced.

  182. The fear is God, no?

  183. That he has to face such a demanding master.

  184. Someone who is going to ask you, what have you done with your life?

  185. And he has this distorted view of him.

  186. Because when you think about it, he is not so mean.

  187. He has given them not only the minas.

  188. All these gifts.

  189. And that is what he is sharing with them.

  190. In fact, in that kingdom.

  191. It is not someone who is exploding them.

  192. Who wants to use them for his own benefit only.

  193. He wants to share with them what it means.

  194. The goodness of that kingdom.

  195. But that wicked servant thinks only in his fears.

  196. And that is very often the truth when we look at ourselves.

  197. When we look at ourselves, we realize how much we miss.

  198. How much we miss first in us.

  199. We are not the people who we would like to be.

  200. We realize how far we are to be the good servants.

  201. Who can hear that day.

  202. Good and faithful servant.

  203. Come with me.

  204. Some are afraid that that day we will not hear good and faithful servant.

  205. And like that man, our gifts, everything we have received from him, is well kept.

  206. Hidden, preserved, conserved, but not used for him and his kingdom.

  207. Why?

  208. First, because of this self-pity.

  209. Maybe we think like this man, what have I got?

  210. If you notice the difference between these servants and the others.

  211. There is also a different number.

  212. He has got only one man.

  213. The others have got several.

  214. And it is multiplied.

  215. They got more with that.

  216. But this man has only one.

  217. And very often we think of our lives like that.

  218. What can I do?

  219. I am not such a great person.

  220. Maybe if I have the ability to speak well.

  221. Or I could be a preacher.

  222. Or if I would not be so shy.

  223. I could tell more to the people.

  224. This good news from the kingdom of God.

  225. You wonder if you would have more money.

  226. What I could do for God's kingdom and his purpose.

  227. If I would have the abilities.

  228. What I don't have.

  229. But here we see.

  230. This is exactly what the Lord does not expect from us.

  231. He is not going to judge us according to how much gifts we have received.

  232. How much talents.

  233. How much abilities.

  234. How much resources.

  235. Endowments.

  236. Is not the number.

  237. It is clearly the lesson of the other servants.

  238. The servants got.

  239. Because of the use they have done.

  240. Of the miners.

  241. They received citizenship.

  242. And some have got a greater number than others.

  243. But it doesn't matter.

  244. The point is not how much have you got.

  245. It is not how much do you achieve in your life.

  246. As we usually say.

  247. It is not success.

  248. But faithfulness really.

  249. But how is faithfulness here seen.

  250. It is interesting that those of us who are more conservative.

  251. In a biblical and theological way.

  252. Tend to be conservative in everything.

  253. So very often.

  254. We are afraid.

  255. So much.

  256. Of everything.

  257. That.

  258. Not trying to put in danger.

  259. But we have got.

  260. We have gambled on.

  261. The greatest loss of it all.

  262. Trying to keep.

  263. The things we have got.

  264. Because you see here.

  265. That the greatest risk.

  266. We can take in this life.

  267. Is doing nothing.

  268. Do you remember that.

  269. The thing Luther wrote to Melaton.

  270. Melaton was a very shy person.

  271. Who was afraid.

  272. Of the steps they were taking.

  273. In the reformation.

  274. In the 16th century.

  275. In Germany.

  276. No.

  277. And Luther sometimes was fed up.

  278. No.

  279. With the.

  280. The way.

  281. He was always.

  282. So paralyzed.

  283. By his doubts.

  284. No.

  285. And there is a very well known sentence.

  286. He wrote to Melaton.

  287. Seen both leads.

  288. Seen both leads.

  289. Seen both leads.

  290. This sentence is something used by Catholics.

  291. To say.

  292. Yeah.

  293. What is this message of God's grace.

  294. Seen both leads.

  295. Seen both leads.

  296. Said Luther.

  297. But.

  298. Luther mentioned to.

  299. And said to Melaton.

  300. We've seen both leads.

  301. Seen both leads.

  302. Was the fact that he.

  303. Had to take risks.

  304. That.

  305. The.

  306. The.

  307. Responsibility.

  308. We have.

  309. Means that.

  310. We can make mistakes.

  311. No.

  312. But we have to do something.

  313. Something.

  314. With what we have received.

  315. And it is exactly.

  316. What you see here.

  317. No.

  318. No.

  319. The great difference.

  320. With our lives.

  321. Is.

  322. When you see.

  323. The goal.

  324. The purpose.

  325. Of it.

  326. This often.

  327. The story told.

  328. Of.

  329. This man.

  330. Working.

  331. Building.

  332. No.

  333. And you.

  334. Ask one person.

  335. Who is just.

  336. A.

  337. Hammering a rock.

  338. No.

  339. Working.

  340. On the stones.

  341. No.

  342. And.

  343. They ask.

  344. What you are doing.

  345. No.

  346. No.

  347. Breaking a stone.

  348. No.

  349. Doing.

  350. The work.

  351. He is doing.

  352. And you ask.

  353. The next person.

  354. And.

  355. He.

  356. Could say.

  357. Well.

  358. I am earning.

  359. My money.

  360. I am.

  361. Trying to.

  362. To provide.

  363. My family.

  364. With what they need.

  365. And of course.

  366. The story is that.

  367. Only the last one.

  368. Is able to say.

  369. I am building.

  370. A cathedral.

  371. He has got the purpose.

  372. The goal of it all.

  373. No.

  374. Jesus.

  375. Cannot see further.

  376. Of what they are.

  377. Doing.

  378. At this very moment.

  379. And.

  380. That is why.

  381. Hope.

  382. Is so important.

  383. For us.

  384. Because.

  385. Really.

  386. Not only.

  387. Our life.

  388. And our work.

  389. Worth.

  390. Value.

  391. But really.

  392. It means.

  393. That.

  394. We have.

  395. This.

  396. Salvation.

  397. That we.

  398. Hope.

  399. To get.

  400. From our.

  401. Jesus Christ.

  402. Christ. And the Lord

  403. showed us that that day he is going

  404. to come to this earth and bring

  405. this kingdom. It's not ourselves who are going

  406. to bring the kingdom of God between the people

  407. at this present moment. This is of course the greatest

  408. mistake of much contemporary theology, of much

  409. of the humanistic Christianity, which

  410. speaks very boldly about what the work

  411. of the Church is achieving between the people and this world today.

  412. As if they are building the kingdom in the sense that they are

  413. bringing finally this new world of justice

  414. just because of the service, the sacrifice,

  415. the commitment they have for God.

  416. But to pray

  417. that the Lord will come

  418. means also that our salvation

  419. will come from heaven.

  420. He will bring this kingdom.

  421. And what we here face

  422. is what we have to do

  423. while we ask

  424. that thy kingdom

  425. will come.

  426. what we have to do

  427. is something.

  428. This is the point

  429. of this story.

  430. You cannot just

  431. sit down

  432. and wait.

  433. You need

  434. to do something

  435. with your life.

  436. And

  437. the greatest

  438. the clearest point

  439. of the story

  440. is that you have to take risks.

  441. That there is a danger.

  442. In this investment

  443. there is the possibility

  444. of a great loss.

  445. But

  446. what here we learn

  447. is that finally

  448. there is no loss at all.

  449. Like this missionary

  450. who was going in Ecuador

  451. to the Indians

  452. through these plains

  453. in the 50s.

  454. And they were

  455. killed

  456. by the spears

  457. of those Indians

  458. when they were going

  459. to preach them

  460. the gospel.

  461. You know the story.

  462. Nathan and Sainz

  463. all these

  464. men we still remember.

  465. One of them

  466. wrote

  467. these words

  468. in his diary.

  469. It's not

  470. fool

  471. to put your life

  472. in danger

  473. when you don't have

  474. nothing to lose.

  475. What do you want

  476. to keep

  477. if you cannot

  478. lose it?

  479. So

  480. the only way

  481. we can take risks

  482. that we can

  483. bring our lives

  484. to danger

  485. is when we realize

  486. that we are safe.

  487. That we don't have

  488. nothing to be afraid.

  489. This is why

  490. the Lord says

  491. so often

  492. to his disciples

  493. don't be afraid.

  494. The peace

  495. be with you.

  496. Because

  497. it's the fear

  498. which paralyzes us.

  499. It's the fear

  500. which makes us

  501. not able

  502. to do anything

  503. in this life.

  504. You know

  505. what are

  506. the greatest fears?

  507. The fears

  508. of the unknown.

  509. The fears

  510. which are not

  511. based on reality.

  512. The irrational fears

  513. we all have

  514. that could happen

  515. one day

  516. our

  517. greatest nightmare.

  518. What we are

  519. more afraid of.

  520. And this

  521. experience

  522. of fear

  523. is

  524. that make us

  525. so difficult

  526. to do anything

  527. with our lives.

  528. So the Lord

  529. shows us

  530. and he says

  531. to his disciples

  532. don't be afraid

  533. my beloved

  534. flock

  535. because

  536. the pastor

  537. has

  538. care

  539. upon you.

  540. There is

  541. a shepherd

  542. a father

  543. in heaven

  544. who is

  545. taking care

  546. of you.

  547. And we

  548. need

  549. not only

  550. to hear that

  551. but to

  552. experience it.

  553. So

  554. the whole

  555. purpose

  556. not only

  557. of the Bible

  558. but of the

  559. work of the

  560. Holy Spirit

  561. is to have

  562. this assurance

  563. this confidence

  564. that we are

  565. his children.

  566. If we know

  567. that we are

  568. his children

  569. then there is

  570. nothing

  571. we have to

  572. be afraid

  573. of.

  574. This is

  575. certainly

  576. the great

  577. lesson

  578. of the

  579. suffering

  580. church

  581. in so

  582. many

  583. countries

  584. and for

  585. so many

  586. centuries.

  587. Why

  588. how

  589. they were

  590. able

  591. to put

  592. their lives

  593. in so much

  594. danger

  595. to sacrifice

  596. themselves

  597. for God's

  598. kingdom.

  599. I think

  600. that

  601. there is

  602. only one

  603. possible

  604. explanation

  605. the assurance

  606. they have

  607. that they

  608. were

  609. God's

  610. children

  611. that there

  612. was no

  613. danger

  614. in that

  615. death.

  616. I remember

  617. reading as a

  618. student

  619. when I was

  620. in the

  621. Christian

  622. Union

  623. the beginning

  624. of the

  625. Christian

  626. Union

  627. at the

  628. University

  629. of Madrid

  630. there was

  631. an American

  632. book called

  633. Sacrifice

  634. and this

  635. holiness

  636. teacher

  637. was asking

  638. from the

  639. very first

  640. page

  641. what have

  642. you sacrificed

  643. for the

  644. kingdom.

  645. Oh

  646. then I

  647. realized

  648. the

  649. sacrifices

  650. are not

  651. so big

  652. maybe.

  653. So I

  654. started to

  655. worry

  656. how great

  657. is the

  658. sacrifice

  659. I've done

  660. and you

  661. get sometimes

  662. this

  663. a bit

  664. insane

  665. illy

  666. spirituality

  667. that

  668. very sick

  669. that

  670. what can

  671. you sacrifice

  672. for the

  673. Lord

  674. what thing

  675. can you do

  676. extra

  677. more

  678. but of

  679. course

  680. this is not

  681. the point

  682. of Christian

  683. life

  684. Christ

  685. has done

  686. everything

  687. there is

  688. no greater

  689. sacrifice

  690. that he

  691. has done

  692. so the

  693. Christian

  694. life is

  695. not about

  696. our

  697. sacrifices

  698. it's about

  699. his

  700. sacrifice

  701. to acknowledge

  702. that

  703. to realize

  704. that

  705. and to

  706. live

  707. according

  708. to that

  709. so here

  710. the Lord

  711. shows us

  712. that it's

  713. not through

  714. our sacrifices

  715. we achieve

  716. things

  717. is the

  718. way we

  719. see our

  720. lives

  721. the way

  722. we use

  723. them

  724. the ways

  725. we put

  726. our faith

  727. in practice

  728. because as

  729. you know

  730. there are

  731. two mistakes

  732. you can do

  733. to think

  734. that you can

  735. be saved

  736. by your

  737. works

  738. moralistic

  739. legalistic

  740. religion

  741. but you

  742. have the

  743. opposite

  744. mistake

  745. the fact

  746. that so

  747. many

  748. Christians

  749. can think

  750. that they

  751. don't have

  752. to do

  753. anything at

  754. all

  755. but here

  756. it's clear

  757. to us

  758. that what

  759. we have

  760. to do

  761. is not

  762. to achieve

  763. or to

  764. get something

  765. to earn

  766. salvation

  767. what we

  768. have to

  769. do

  770. is

  771. the

  772. result

  773. the

  774. consequence

  775. of our

  776. confidence

  777. of being

  778. God's

  779. servants

  780. and

  781. it seems

  782. unfair

  783. the end

  784. of the

  785. story

  786. when you

  787. read

  788. the words

  789. of our

  790. Lord

  791. that this

  792. man

  793. who

  794. has

  795. only

  796. one

  797. mind

  798. will

  799. be

  800. taken

  801. yeah

  802. there's a

  803. bit

  804. harsh

  805. it's

  806. really

  807. too hard

  808. to cope

  809. with

  810. yeah

  811. you have

  812. pity

  813. for the

  814. poor

  815. man

  816. but

  817. is

  818. this

  819. shock

  820. at the

  821. end

  822. of the

  823. story

  824. that

  825. make us

  826. awake

  827. of the

  828. danger

  829. is

  830. not

  831. that

  832. when you

  833. have so

  834. little

  835. you are

  836. expected

  837. so

  838. little

  839. this is

  840. not how

  841. it works

  842. in the

  843. kingdom

  844. of God

  845. who am

  846. I

  847. what can

  848. I do

  849. the only

  850. thing I

  851. can do

  852. is to

  853. keep the

  854. faith

  855. to be

  856. faithful

  857. at the

  858. end

  859. and that

  860. is the

  861. only thing

  862. I can

  863. expect

  864. to do

  865. here

  866. is

  867. in a

  868. very

  869. striking

  870. way

  871. seeing

  872. the

  873. fact

  874. that

  875. even

  876. the

  877. ones

  878. who

  879. have

  880. something

  881. this

  882. could

  883. be

  884. taken

  885. from

  886. them

  887. of

  888. course

  889. we

  890. think

  891. about

  892. Israel

  893. and the

  894. way

  895. that

  896. the

  897. Jews

  898. have

  899. received

  900. such

  901. great

  902. blessings

  903. as

  904. God's

  905. people

  906. it

  907. is

  908. often

  909. said

  910. by

  911. commentators

  912. that

  913. of

  914. course

  915. in

  916. that

  917. time

  918. as

  919. in

  920. the

  921. reformation

  922. the

  923. usury

  924. the

  925. lending

  926. of

  927. money

  928. was

  929. forbidden

  930. so

  931. that

  932. this

  933. business

  934. aspect

  935. of

  936. that

  937. story

  938. probably

  939. was not

  940. possible

  941. between

  942. Jews

  943. so

  944. some

  945. people

  946. think

  947. that

  948. it's

  949. here

  950. this

  951. story

  952. understood

  953. better

  954. when we

  955. think

  956. in terms

  957. of

  958. Jews

  959. and

  960. Gentiles

  961. so

  962. that

  963. here

  964. the

  965. Lord

  966. Jesus

  967. is

  968. saying

  969. you

  970. have

  971. to

  972. do

  973. something

  974. with

  975. your

  976. faith

  977. as

  978. God's

  979. people

  980. as

  981. Jews

  982. with

  983. the

  984. Gentiles

  985. with

  986. those

  987. who

  988. needed

  989. this

  990. light

  991. but

  992. independently

  993. of what

  994. it means

  995. originally

  996. in that

  997. context

  998. you see

  999. here

  1000. the

  1001. importance

  1002. and the

  1003. responsibility

  1004. we have

  1005. so that

  1006. the

  1007. privileges

  1008. we receive

  1009. doesn't

  1010. matter

  1011. we are

  1012. Jews

  1013. or

  1014. Christians

  1015. the

  1016. privileges

  1017. we

  1018. have

  1019. it

  1020. means

  1021. a

  1022. responsibility

  1023. what

  1024. you

  1025. do

  1026. with

  1027. it

  1028. and

  1029. you

  1030. cannot

  1031. hope

  1032. like so

  1033. many

  1034. years

  1035. that

  1036. while the

  1037. temple

  1038. was there

  1039. in

  1040. Jerusalem

  1041. then you

  1042. don't have

  1043. anything

  1044. to be

  1045. afraid of

  1046. because

  1047. God

  1048. can take

  1049. away

  1050. that

  1051. temple

  1052. the

  1053. Lord

  1054. Jesus

  1055. Christ

  1056. said

  1057. I

  1058. can't

  1059. destroy

  1060. it

  1061. I

  1062. can

  1063. take

  1064. this

  1065. life

  1066. and

  1067. give

  1068. the

  1069. life

  1070. to

  1071. other

  1072. people

  1073. you

  1074. don't

  1075. have

  1076. to

  1077. think

  1078. that

  1079. because

  1080. you

  1081. are

  1082. children

  1083. of

  1084. Abraham

  1085. you

  1086. have

  1087. everything

  1088. and nothing

  1089. to be

  1090. worried

  1091. about

  1092. if

  1093. you

  1094. don't

  1095. do

  1096. anything

  1097. with

  1098. this

  1099. blessing

  1100. you

  1101. have

  1102. received

  1103. it

  1104. can

  1105. be

  1106. taken

  1107. away

  1108. from

  1109. you

  1110. and

  1111. this

  1112. is

  1113. of

  1114. course

  1115. a

  1116. great

  1117. lesson

  1118. for

  1119. the

  1120. church

  1121. for

  1122. us

  1123. all

  1124. in

  1125. this

  1126. country

  1127. as

  1128. in

  1129. my

  1130. continent

  1131. the

  1132. fact

  1133. that

  1134. we

  1135. have

  1136. been

  1137. so

  1138. much

  1139. blessed

  1140. in

  1141. history

  1142. through

  1143. centuries

  1144. it

  1145. doesn't

  1146. mean

  1147. just

  1148. that

  1149. we

  1150. have

  1151. to

  1152. be

  1153. grateful

  1154. for

  1155. what

  1156. we

  1157. have

  1158. it's

  1159. a

  1160. responsibility

  1161. are

  1162. you

  1163. going

  1164. to

  1165. share

  1166. what

  1167. you

  1168. have

  1169. with

  1170. others

  1171. so

  1172. this

  1173. Sunday

  1174. you

  1175. are

  1176. thinking

  1177. about

  1178. mission

  1179. what

  1180. it

  1181. means

  1182. that

  1183. we

  1184. are

  1185. here

  1186. in

  1187. this

  1188. life

  1189. for

  1190. a

  1191. purpose

  1192. and

  1193. the

  1194. need

  1195. that

  1196. we

  1197. have

  1198. to

  1199. invest

  1200. our

  1201. life

  1202. our

  1203. resources

  1204. our

  1205. gifts

  1206. now

  1207. and

  1208. today

  1209. before

  1210. he

  1211. comes

  1212. because

  1213. we

  1214. have

  1215. a

  1216. mission

  1217. to

  1218. do

  1219. now

  1220. and

  1221. what

  1222. we

  1223. have

  1224. received

  1225. we

  1226. have

  1227. to

  1228. use

  1229. them

  1230. to

  1231. use

  1232. it

  1233. and

  1234. to

  1235. invest

  1236. it

  1237. for

  1238. their

  1239. kingdom

  1240. and

  1241. finally

  1242. I

  1243. want

  1244. to

  1245. lift

  1246. you

  1247. this

  1248. glorious

  1249. perspective

  1250. what

  1251. for

  1252. what

  1253. is

  1254. the

  1255. purpose

  1256. of it

  1257. all

  1258. that

  1259. one

  1260. day

  1261. when

  1262. he

  1263. will

  1264. come

  1265. back

  1266. he

  1267. will

  1268. say

  1269. good

  1270. and

  1271. beloved

  1272. servant

  1273. what

  1274. it

  1275. means

  1276. for

  1277. us

  1278. the

  1279. acceptance

  1280. the

  1281. approval

  1282. of

  1283. the

  1284. Lord

  1285. certainly

  1286. as I

  1287. say

  1288. for

  1289. many

  1290. is

  1291. the

  1292. fear

  1293. we

  1294. have

  1295. that

  1296. one

  1297. day

  1298. when

  1299. we

  1300. will

  1301. see

  1302. him

  1303. we

  1304. realize

  1305. how

  1306. much

  1307. are

  1308. our

  1309. shortcomings

  1310. that

  1311. we

  1312. would

  1313. be

  1314. so

  1315. afraid

  1316. even

  1317. to

  1318. look

  1319. at

  1320. him

  1321. but

  1322. this

  1323. is

  1324. the

  1325. distorted

  1326. view

  1327. of

  1328. the

  1329. wicked

  1330. servant

  1331. the

  1332. wicked

  1333. servant

  1334. is

  1335. here

  1336. portrayed

  1337. almost

  1338. psychologically

  1339. to us

  1340. in the

  1341. story

  1342. the

  1343. others

  1344. is not

  1345. much

  1346. safe

  1347. about

  1348. how

  1349. they

  1350. look

  1351. at

  1352. the

  1353. master

  1354. what

  1355. was

  1356. their

  1357. thinking

  1358. and

  1359. feelings

  1360. about

  1361. it

  1362. but

  1363. here

  1364. in

  1365. the

  1366. wicked

  1367. servant

  1368. you

  1369. see

  1370. really

  1371. how

  1372. he

  1373. was

  1374. seeing

  1375. him

  1376. as

  1377. someone

  1378. so demanding

  1379. that you

  1380. have to

  1381. be

  1382. afraid

  1383. and

  1384. we

  1385. realize

  1386. that

  1387. he

  1388. will

  1389. have

  1390. this

  1391. responsibility

  1392. it's

  1393. not to

  1394. think

  1395. that he

  1396. so demanding

  1397. that he

  1398. would not

  1399. be

  1400. easy

  1401. to

  1402. satisfy

  1403. the

  1404. point

  1405. is

  1406. exactly

  1407. that

  1408. he

  1409. is

  1410. satisfied

  1411. through

  1412. Jesus

  1413. Christ

  1414. there

  1415. is

  1416. nothing

  1417. really

  1418. he

  1419. has

  1420. against

  1421. us

  1422. so

  1423. what

  1424. he

  1425. expects

  1426. from

  1427. us

  1428. is

  1429. the

  1430. trust

  1431. is

  1432. the

  1433. confidence

  1434. so much

  1435. that we

  1436. take

  1437. on

  1438. risk

  1439. our

  1440. lives

  1441. then

  1442. we

  1443. have

  1444. to

  1445. ask

  1446. ourselves

  1447. once

  1448. more

  1449. if

  1450. we

  1451. willing

  1452. to

  1453. take

  1454. this

  1455. risk

  1456. to

  1457. use

  1458. even

  1459. our

  1460. small

  1461. little

  1462. gifts

  1463. in

  1464. our

  1465. eyes

  1466. it

  1467. doesn't

  1468. matter

  1469. how

  1470. small

  1471. and

  1472. little

  1473. are

  1474. in

  1475. our

  1476. eyes

  1477. but

  1478. what

  1479. we

  1480. are

  1481. doing

  1482. with

  1483. our

  1484. lives

  1485. and

  1486. the

  1487. truth

  1488. is

  1489. that

  1490. there

  1491. is

  1492. not

  1493. much

  1494. time

  1495. it's

  1496. coming

  1497. back

  1498. and

  1499. then

  1500. one

  1501. day

  1502. it

  1503. will

  1504. be

  1505. too

  1506. late

  1507. so

  1508. our

  1509. responsibility

  1510. is

  1511. what

  1512. we

  1513. are

  1514. going

  1515. to

  1516. do

  1517. today

  1518. tomorrow

  1519. the

  1520. only

  1521. way

  1522. we

  1523. are

  1524. able

  1525. to

  1526. do

  1527. something

  1528. is

  1529. looking

  1530. at

  1531. him

  1532. in

  1533. a

  1534. different

  1535. way

  1536. than

  1537. this

  1538. wicked

  1539. servant

  1540. if

  1541. you

  1542. think

  1543. of

  1544. him

  1545. in

  1546. the

  1547. terms

  1548. of

  1549. this

  1550. man

  1551. who

  1552. said

  1553. that

  1554. he

  1555. was

  1556. such

  1557. a

  1558. lord

  1559. and

  1560. master

  1561. that

  1562. he

  1563. was

  1564. so

  1565. afraid

  1566. that

  1567. he

  1568. will

  1569. be

  1570. condemned

  1571. then

  1572. we

  1573. will

  1574. do

  1575. nothing

  1576. but

  1577. only

  1578. when

  1579. we

  1580. feel

  1581. the

  1582. confidence

  1583. the

  1584. trust

  1585. that

  1586. he

  1587. accepts

  1588. us

  1589. that

  1590. we

  1591. are

  1592. not

  1593. only

  1594. his

  1595. servants

  1596. but

  1597. his

  1598. children

  1599. then

  1600. we

  1601. can

  1602. do

  1603. something

  1604. with

  1605. our

  1606. lives

  1607. shall

  1608. we

  1609. pray

  1610. to

  1611. our

  1612. father

  1613. that

  1614. we

  1615. have

  1616. this

  1617. assurance

  1618. that

  1619. we

  1620. are

  1621. God's

  1622. children

  1623. that

  1624. so

  1625. much

  1626. we

  1627. have

  1628. this

  1629. confidence

  1630. that

  1631. we

  1632. are

  1633. able

  1634. to

  1635. take

  1636. risks

  1637. to

  1638. put

  1639. our

  1640. lives

  1641. on

  1642. dangers

  1643. to

  1644. invest

  1645. our

  1646. resources

  1647. our

  1648. gifts

  1649. for

  1650. God's

  1651. kingdom

  1652. so

  1653. we

  1654. pray

  1655. that

  1656. he

  1657. help

  1658. us

  1659. and

  1660. enable

  1661. us

  1662. to

  1663. do

  1664. it
