  1. We're reading Narnia to Noah. We've just finished The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.

  2. ! And you know that story, don't you, for many of us. The four Pevensey children have travelled

  3. ! to a home outside London during the war, where it's safer. And in that home they find

  4. a large wardrobe. And here is how C.S. Lewis describes the scene of the novel. Looking into the inside

  5. of the cupboard, she saw several coats hanging out. Mostly long fur coats. There is nothing

  6. Lucy liked so much as the smell and feel of fur. She immediately stepped into the wardrobe.

  7. This must be an enormous wardrobe, thought Lucy. Going still further in, she pushed the soft

  8. folds of the coats by to make room for her. And she noticed that there was something crunching

  9. under her feet. Stooping down to feel it with her hand, she felt something soft and powdery

  10. and extremely cold.

  11. This is very queer, she said, and went on a step or two further. Something cold and soft

  12. was falling on her.

  13. A moment later she found that she was standing in the middle of a wood at night time, with

  14. snow at her feet and snowflakes falling through the air. She began to walk forward, crunch,

  15. crunch over the snow, and through the snow towards the light. And in about ten minutes she reached

  16. it and found that it was a lampurst. She stood looking at it, wondering why there was a lamp

  17. post in the middle of a wood, and wondering what to do next. She heard the pitter patter of feet

  18. coming toward her. Soon after that a very strange person stepped out from among the trees into the

  19. light of the lamp post. It was of course at that moment as a fawn named, namely Mr. Tunness, that Lucy

  20. realized she was not in England anymore. But she'd entered the magical world of Nadia.

  21. There are a few scenes in literature as magical as that, are they? As that entrance by Lucy

  22. through the wardrobe into that enchanting world of Nadia. Why does that resonate with so many of us?

  23. Why does it resonate with millions of readers? And if you're not a reader maybe you saw the film.

  24. Is it that in some way all of us have imagined ourselves to be a Lucy? Maybe not in a world like

  25. Nadia, but definitely different from the world that we're in now. Indeed we don't just dream and

  26. imagine about a different world, but we dream and imagine about a better world, don't we?

  27. There is this deep longing inside every single one of us, and it is expressed in various ways.

  28. You could say that whatever your politics are. Whether you are adamantly part of the Remain group,

  29. or you are furiously part of the Brexit group. There is a desire, isn't there, in both of those,

  30. whether it is Remain or Brexit, for a better world. Behind all the protests and all the arguments

  31. that take place is a desire for a better world. You move from the political sphere to the secret

  32. loins of our hearts. And the desire is still there, isn't it? You think about the struggles

  33. in your life. The financial struggles. The health concerns. The employment pressures. The relationship

  34. angst. And some of you, and some of us at some stage, will say, if only my life were different.

  35. If only this world was different. And our minds start to dream, don't they, of a vision of a

  36. better world. Well, here in Isaiah 11, the prophet provides such a vision, doesn't he? And if Narnia

  37. was a complete contrast for Lucy to the war-torn world of England that she was used to, the vision

  38. of a better world that Isaiah presents is even more of a contrast to the people of Judah at that time.

  39. So you remember, we've been going through the early chapters of Isaiah, and we've seen for Judah,

  40. judgment is coming, that is certain. It is coming from God, from forsaking God.

  41. But the people, instead of trusting God, have forsaken him. Rather than trusting in him, they've forsaken

  42. Judah. Judah has failed. And its kings have decided not to trust in the Lord God Almighty, the Lord of hosts,

  43. but to trust in the superpower of Assyria, against the threat of neighbouring nations.

  44. And Isaiah announces that God is not only going to bring judgment upon Judah through Assyria,

  45. but then, as we saw in chapter 10, he's going to bring his wrath to bear against Assyria as well.

  46. And so at the end of chapter 10, right before, right at the end of that section, can you see

  47. verse 33 and 34 of chapter 10?

  48. Behold, the Lord God of hosts will lock the bows with terrifying power.

  49. The great in height, they'll be hewn down.

  50. The lofty will be brought low.

  51. He will cut down the thickets of the forest with an axe,

  52. and Lebanon will fall by his majestic one.

  53. God is going to cut down.

  54. God is going to cut down the size of the king of Assyria.

  55. And by implication, all those who have aligned themselves with Assyria,

  56. which would actually include Judah.

  57. But those who thought themselves high and mighty,

  58. like the cedars, the tall trees of Lebanon,

  59. they'll be cut down to stumps.

  60. And from the perspective of the people of Judah,

  61. it really couldn't have gone much worse.

  62. But out of the darkness,

  63. Isaiah wants to point again to the light,

  64. which is what he does here in chapter 11.

  65. Isaiah is going to point to the people,

  66. to a world of rest,

  67. ruled by a righteous king.

  68. To a world of rest,

  69. a world of peace,

  70. ruled by a righteous king.

  71. And I want to suggest to you,

  72. what you find in Isaiah 11

  73. is what everyone is looking for.

  74. It's what you are looking for.

  75. Whether you realise it or not.

  76. It's what your Muslim neighbours,

  77. it's what your Hindu friends,

  78. it's what your non-religious colleagues

  79. are looking for.

  80. So first of all,

  81. let's see the world of peace.

  82. Isaiah points to the world of peace.

  83. Look at verse 6

  84. of Isaiah 11.

  85. Verse 6

  86. The wolf shall dwell with the lamb,

  87. and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat,

  88. and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together,

  89. and a little child will lead them.

  90. The cow and the bear shall graze,

  91. their young shall lie down together,

  92. and the lion shall eat straw like ox.

  93. The nursing child shall play over the hold of the cobra,

  94. and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adders down.

  95. They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain.

  96. For the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord

  97. as the waters cleverly see.

  98. Now this passage,

  99. it's got to ring bells for you, isn't it?

  100. If you know your Bible at all,

  101. it certainly points to a return to the Garden of Eden

  102. prior to the fall.

  103. But as you look at the images,

  104. they are startling,

  105. although you can have great fun with these images.

  106. You've got this play of the wolf and the lamb.

  107. The prey gives hospitality to the predator.

  108. It's like the lamb says,

  109. oh, come in, Mr. Wolf,

  110. take a seat,

  111. what can I get you for dinner?

  112. It's like the wolf in the story of the three pigs,

  113. he says,

  114. I will huff and I will puff

  115. and I will blow your house down.

  116. Oh, please come in, Mr. Wolf,

  117. what can we get you for your tea?

  118. In the world we live in,

  119. it is bizarre,

  120. it is impossible.

  121. Padres was a Roman writer at the time of Christ

  122. who wrote fables in the tradition of Aesop.

  123. And one of his fables,

  124. probably the most famous one,

  125. is of a wolf

  126. who's standing upstream in a river

  127. who accuses a lamb

  128. who is downstream of muddying the waters.

  129. And all of which leads to the wolf

  130. seizing the lamb and killing it.

  131. Now that is what you'd expect,

  132. isn't it?

  133. The wolf and the lamb,

  134. they're not friends.

  135. The wolf,

  136. the predator,

  137. kills the prey.

  138. But here Isaiah says,

  139. there is a world

  140. in which a lamb

  141. will offer hospitality

  142. to the wolf.

  143. He'll say,

  144. come back to mine for lunch.

  145. And Isaiah goes on

  146. with these animal analogies.

  147. And we realize

  148. that this is not just

  149. an upgraded version

  150. of our world.

  151. This is not iPhone 6

  152. when you've been used to

  153. iPhone 4S

  154. for the last three years

  155. or something like that.

  156. No, this is radically different.

  157. It's not an upgrade.

  158. And some of you may be thinking,

  159. well, no offense, Paul,

  160. but when I think of a new world,

  161. of a better world,

  162. my mind doesn't exactly

  163. run to animals

  164. offering hospitality

  165. to each other.

  166. I want something much bigger.

  167. But I grant that.

  168. So let me take you

  169. to the key picture

  170. of the passage.

  171. Can you see it?

  172. It's right in the middle.

  173. It's deliberately right

  174. in the middle.

  175. In verse 8,

  176. you have this infant,

  177. this young child

  178. playing at the hole

  179. of a cobra.

  180. This tiny tot

  181. playing with the viper.

  182. And the reason

  183. that is significant

  184. is because Isaiah

  185. is picking up

  186. on the theme

  187. that is back

  188. in Genesis 3.

  189. We read that

  190. in the Garden of Eden,

  191. the devil comes

  192. in the form of a

  193. serpent,

  194. of a snake.

  195. and he deceives

  196. Adam and Eve

  197. to rebel against God

  198. and as a result,

  199. God's curse

  200. falls on Adam and Eve

  201. and on the serpent.

  202. And the world

  203. has been under

  204. the curse of God

  205. ever since.

  206. And you and I,

  207. by nature,

  208. are under that curse.

  209. We are under

  210. the stern

  211. wrath

  212. and judgment

  213. of God

  214. because of our

  215. rebellion against Him.

  216. so that everything

  217. in your life

  218. and my life,

  219. everything in this world

  220. is not as it's

  221. meant to be.

  222. And that can be

  223. traced back

  224. to the forehole.

  225. Here is the

  226. fundamental problem

  227. that we deal with

  228. in this world.

  229. But Isaiah says,

  230. on that day,

  231. the infant

  232. will play

  233. without fear

  234. near the cobra's

  235. hole.

  236. And the young

  237. child

  238. will treat

  239. the viper

  240. like a plaything.

  241. He says,

  242. this is the

  243. peaceful kingdom.

  244. It's a world

  245. of peace.

  246. And it's a world

  247. of peace because

  248. the curse

  249. from the fall

  250. has been removed.

  251. All the effects

  252. of the fall

  253. are now gone

  254. in this image

  255. right there 11.

  256. All the consequences

  257. of sin

  258. have been removed.

  259. They've been

  260. sucked out of the

  261. world on that day.

  262. That everything

  263. you wish was

  264. different about

  265. your life right now

  266. will be different

  267. on that day.

  268. And most importantly,

  269. God's judgment

  270. and wrath

  271. which we fully

  272. deserve

  273. will be no more.

  274. And the effects

  275. will not just

  276. be in your life

  277. and in my life.

  278. Isaiah says

  279. they will be

  280. worldwide.

  281. They will be

  282. cosmic.

  283. You see,

  284. salvation is not

  285. just about you

  286. and my personal

  287. relationship

  288. with the Lord.

  289. God is the

  290. cosmic God.

  291. And salvation

  292. is cosmic.

  293. Because it says,

  294. doesn't it,

  295. the whole earth,

  296. for the earth

  297. shall be full

  298. of the knowledge

  299. of the Lord

  300. as the waters

  301. cover the sea.

  302. It's a world

  303. of peace

  304. because it's a

  305. world of peace

  306. with God.

  307. So here's my

  308. first point.

  309. Here's a world

  310. of peace.

  311. But secondly,

  312. we see that it

  313. is a world

  314. of peace

  315. that is inhabited

  316. by a people

  317. at rest.

  318. It is a world

  319. of peace

  320. that is inhabited

  321. by a people

  322. at rest.

  323. Look at verses

  324. 10 to 13.

  325. In that day,

  326. the root

  327. of Jesse,

  328. who shall stand

  329. as a signal,

  330. as a banner,

  331. is a much

  332. better translation,

  333. as a rallying

  334. point for the

  335. peoples.

  336. Of him shall

  337. the nations

  338. inquire,

  339. and his resting

  340. place shall be

  341. glorious.

  342. In that day,

  343. the Lord will

  344. extend his hand

  345. yet a second

  346. time to recover

  347. the remnant

  348. that remains of

  349. his people

  350. from Assyria,

  351. from Egypt,

  352. from Pathros,

  353. from Cush,

  354. from Elam,

  355. from China,

  356. from Hamath,

  357. and from the

  358. coastlands of the

  359. sea.

  360. He will raise

  361. a signal,

  362. a banner for

  363. the nations,

  364. and will assemble

  365. the banished

  366. people of Israel

  367. and gather

  368. the dispersed

  369. of Judah

  370. from the four

  371. corners of the

  372. earth.

  373. And the jealousy

  374. of Ephraim

  375. will be cast,

  376. and those who

  377. harass Judah

  378. will be cut

  379. off,

  380. and Ephraim

  381. will not be

  382. jealous of Judah,

  383. and Judah

  384. shall not harass

  385. Ephraim.

  386. Isaiah looks

  387. to the future,

  388. the future

  389. day,

  390. and he says

  391. God is going to

  392. rescue his people.

  393. Can you see that

  394. verse 11 for a

  395. second time?

  396. And if you're

  397. unclear over what

  398. was the first time

  399. when God rescued

  400. his people,

  401. it's there in

  402. verse 16.

  403. the Lord will

  404. utterly destroy the

  405. town of the

  406. sea of Egypt,

  407. isn't it

  408. beautiful language,

  409. and will wave

  410. his hand over

  411. the river with

  412. his scorching

  413. breath,

  414. and strike it

  415. into seven

  416. channels,

  417. and he will

  418. lead the people

  419. across in

  420. sandals.

  421. It's got to be

  422. a giveaway,

  423. isn't it?

  424. And there will

  425. be a highway

  426. for Assyria,

  427. for the remnant

  428. and the remains

  429. of his people,

  430. as there was

  431. for Israel

  432. when they came

  433. up from the

  434. land of Egypt.

  435. There's going

  436. to be a

  437. reversal of

  438. the curse.

  439. But there's

  440. also going to

  441. be another

  442. exodus.

  443. There'll be

  444. another Eden,

  445. and there'll

  446. be another

  447. exodus.

  448. There'll be

  449. another

  450. deliverance,

  451. just as God

  452. promised to

  453. bring the

  454. people to

  455. the promised

  456. land,

  457. the first

  458. land,

  459. so now he's

  460. going to

  461. deliver them,

  462. or a remnant

  463. of them to

  464. return to the

  465. promised land.

  466. There's going

  467. to be a

  468. reversal of the

  469. curse of the

  470. exile.

  471. But this

  472. time, the

  473. deliverance is

  474. not going to

  475. be from Egypt,

  476. it's not going

  477. to be from one

  478. part of the

  479. world, it's

  480. going to be a

  481. wider exodus,

  482. isn't it?

  483. It's going to

  484. be a worldwide

  485. dispersion.

  486. So with the

  487. nations and

  488. places that he

  489. mentions, Isaiah

  490. covers, doesn't

  491. he, the four

  492. points of the

  493. compass.

  494. From north,

  495. from south,

  496. from east,

  497. from west,

  498. that's where

  499. those nations

  500. are from,

  501. to indicate that

  502. God is going

  503. to gather his

  504. people from the

  505. four corners of

  506. the earth,

  507. verse 12,

  508. and wherever

  509. they've been

  510. scattered.

  511. But once he's

  512. gathered them,

  513. look at verse

  514. 13, these

  515. nations are

  516. not going to

  517. turn the same

  518. as when they

  519. left.

  520. That is,

  521. they departed

  522. and strife with

  523. each other,

  524. but now they

  525. are at peace.

  526. The nations,

  527. all jealousy

  528. and hostility

  529. will vanish

  530. because God's

  531. people will be

  532. at peace with

  533. each other.

  534. It's a

  535. wonderful,

  536. wonderful picture

  537. picture that

  538. the fruit of

  539. peace with

  540. God is

  541. peace with

  542. each other.

  543. We know that

  544. in a small

  545. little way in

  546. the church

  547. life, the

  548. fruit of

  549. peace with

  550. God is

  551. peace with

  552. each other.

  553. But in a

  554. much greater

  555. way, we

  556. look forward

  557. to that.

  558. So it is a

  559. world of peace

  560. inhabited by a

  561. people at

  562. rest.

  563. And the

  564. question does

  565. arise, who

  566. are these

  567. people that

  568. Isaiah is

  569. writing of?

  570. And interestingly

  571. we see at the

  572. beginning of this

  573. section that

  574. these people at

  575. rest are not

  576. restricted to

  577. one or two

  578. nations.

  579. But we get

  580. verse 10,

  581. In that day

  582. the root of

  583. Jesse will

  584. stand as a

  585. banner, as a

  586. signal for the

  587. peoples, for

  588. the nations.

  589. And of him

  590. the nations

  591. will inquire,

  592. they will come

  593. to him and his

  594. resting place will

  595. be glorious.

  596. Do you see how

  597. extensive this is?

  598. Along with a

  599. remnant, with a

  600. part of ethnic

  601. Israel, there

  602. will be the

  603. nations.

  604. But it will be

  605. just as the

  606. book of

  607. Revelation promises

  608. that every tribe

  609. and every tongue

  610. and every people

  611. and every nation

  612. will be there.

  613. And he says

  614. there will be no

  615. strife.

  616. There will be no

  617. ethnic animosities

  618. anymore.

  619. On a personal

  620. level, there will

  621. be no gossip.

  622. There will be no

  623. cold shouldering.

  624. There will be no

  625. animosity.

  626. There will be no

  627. jealousy.

  628. There will be no

  629. inferiority complexes.

  630. Can you imagine

  631. that?

  632. Think of how much

  633. of the stress and

  634. anxiety of your

  635. life is caused

  636. by relationship

  637. tensions.

  638. Hurt that is

  639. caused by

  640. careless words.

  641. Spiteful words.

  642. Or having been

  643. ignored or maligned

  644. or misunderstood

  645. or taken for

  646. granted.

  647. and in all our

  648. lives, it's a huge

  649. amount of stress to

  650. deal with that, to

  651. navigate that.

  652. That in fact is,

  653. particularly in

  654. ministers, there's a

  655. kind of theory at the

  656. moment that actually

  657. it's overwork kind of

  658. causes ministers to

  659. break down.

  660. Actually, I don't

  661. think that is true.

  662. I think it is the

  663. stress of broken

  664. relationships that

  665. causes that.

  666. God's

  667. for all the

  668. angst that we

  669. have with people.

  670. One day, I

  671. say, it will be

  672. God.

  673. It will be

  674. God.

  675. We're going to get

  676. on famously.

  677. We'll send emails to

  678. each other and we'll

  679. perfectly understand

  680. those emails.

  681. I pray there will

  682. be no email in the

  683. new creation.

  684. But we will get

  685. on famously.

  686. It will be a world

  687. of peace inhabited

  688. by a people at

  689. rest.

  690. And I don't know

  691. about you, that

  692. sounds pretty good

  693. to me.

  694. I mean, who

  695. wouldn't really

  696. want a world like

  697. that?

  698. And yet some

  699. people will say

  700. today, Eucharist

  701. is all pie in the

  702. sky, it's all

  703. make-believe.

  704. In 1516, Sir

  705. Thomas More wrote

  706. a book called

  707. Utopia.

  708. I have not read

  709. it, but I know

  710. an illustration

  711. about it.

  712. And it was in

  713. essence a critique

  714. of England at the

  715. time.

  716. 500 years later,

  717. we still use the

  718. term, not

  719. we?

  720. And then he

  721. coined for his

  722. title, Utopia.

  723. And the way

  724. that we commonly

  725. use the word is

  726. to refer to a

  727. perfect place where

  728. everything is the

  729. way it should be

  730. all the time.

  731. But Sir

  732. Thomas More

  733. actually intended

  734. it as a pun.

  735. So sometimes in

  736. the book he would

  737. spell it with the

  738. prefix, EU.

  739. Because in

  740. Greek that means

  741. good, that means

  742. it was a good

  743. place.

  744. But at other

  745. times, Thomas More

  746. would spell it

  747. utopia, OU,

  748. with the prefix

  749. OU, which in

  750. Greek means no.

  751. Or not meaning.

  752. Not a place.

  753. And his point

  754. was that there is

  755. no such perfect

  756. place.

  757. But Isaiah says

  758. there is a day

  759. coming, one day,

  760. such a perfect

  761. place, such a

  762. world of peace

  763. inhabited by a

  764. people at rest,

  765. that it is

  766. coming.

  767. But it all

  768. depends on one

  769. person.

  770. One person.

  771. So third point,

  772. this is a world

  773. of peace

  774. because it is

  775. inhabited by

  776. people at rest

  777. and it is

  778. ruled by a

  779. righteous king.

  780. It is ruled by a

  781. righteous king.

  782. Let's go back to

  783. the start of the

  784. chapter.

  785. Verse 1.

  786. Now do you

  787. remember, at the

  788. end of verse 34

  789. there is a

  790. massive great

  791. tree that has

  792. been cut down.

  793. So there is a

  794. stump in the

  795. middle of the

  796. field.

  797. Get the picture.

  798. There is a

  799. massive great

  800. tree stump.

  801. And the tree

  802. has been cut

  803. down.

  804. And then in

  805. verse 1 there

  806. shall come forth

  807. a shoot.

  808. A shoot from

  809. the stump of

  810. Jesse.

  811. And a branch,

  812. a little tiny

  813. branch from

  814. his roots shall

  815. bear fruit.

  816. The spirit of

  817. the Lord shall

  818. rest upon him.

  819. See that?

  820. It's a shoot.

  821. It's a branch.

  822. Verse 2.

  823. It's a hem.

  824. The spirit of

  825. the Lord shall

  826. rest upon him.

  827. The spirit of

  828. wisdom and

  829. understanding.

  830. The spirit of

  831. counsel and

  832. might.

  833. The spirit of

  834. knowledge and

  835. the fear of

  836. the Lord.

  837. And his

  838. delight shall

  839. be in the

  840. fear of the

  841. Lord.

  842. He shall not

  843. judge by what

  844. his eyes see

  845. or decide

  846. disputes by

  847. what his

  848. ears hear.

  849. But with

  850. righteousness

  851. he will

  852. judge the

  853. poor and

  854. decide with

  855. equity for

  856. the meek of

  857. the earth.

  858. And he shall

  859. strike the

  860. earth with the

  861. rod of his

  862. mouth.

  863. With the

  864. breath of his

  865. lips he shall

  866. kill the

  867. wicked.

  868. So we

  869. saw earlier

  870. at the end

  871. of chapter 10

  872. it ends

  873. with a

  874. judgment.

  875. Judgment on

  876. these proud

  877. kings.

  878. On the

  879. high and

  880. mighty.

  881. The proud

  882. kings of

  883. Israel.

  884. God chops

  885. them down

  886. like trees.

  887. But here at

  888. the beginning

  889. of chapter 11

  890. I told them

  891. there's a

  892. tiny shoot

  893. that comes

  894. up from

  895. the stump

  896. of Jesse.

  897. And from

  898. the roots

  899. of that

  900. shoot a

  901. branch

  902. will come

  903. that will

  904. bear fruit.

  905. And as

  906. we've

  907. seen Isaiah

  908. do several

  909. times again

  910. we have in

  911. the midst

  912. of darkness

  913. a glimmer

  914. of hope.

  915. And what

  916. is interesting

  917. here is that

  918. the stump

  919. comes from

  920. the shoot

  921. of Jesse.

  922. The shoot

  923. comes from

  924. the stump

  925. of Jesse.

  926. You say

  927. it was Jesse.

  928. Well Jesse

  929. was the

  930. father of

  931. King David.

  932. And so the

  933. question,

  934. the obvious

  935. question is

  936. why does

  937. Isaiah,

  938. the shoot

  939. come from

  940. the stump

  941. of David?

  942. In the

  943. Old Testament

  944. and the

  945. New Testament

  946. David was

  947. far more

  948. important than

  949. Jesse.

  950. And we

  951. usually make

  952. the connection

  953. don't we

  954. between the

  955. coming king,

  956. King David's

  957. greater son

  958. and King

  959. David.

  960. Why does

  961. Isaiah not

  962. say there

  963. shall come

  964. forth a shoot

  965. from the

  966. stump of

  967. David?

  968. Well because

  969. he wants

  970. his audience

  971. to understand,

  972. he wants his

  973. readers to

  974. understand that

  975. this is not

  976. just another

  977. king in the

  978. line of

  979. David.

  980. There are

  981. quite a few

  982. kings mentioned

  983. in the Old

  984. Testament that

  985. were sons of

  986. David, they

  987. were of

  988. David's

  989. lineage.

  990. They were

  991. from David.

  992. Some did

  993. quite well,

  994. to put it

  995. mildly,

  996. some did

  997. not so well,

  998. some were

  999. awful.

  1000. But Isaiah's

  1001. point is that

  1002. another David

  1003. is coming.

  1004. Another David

  1005. is coming.

  1006. In fact,

  1007. a greater

  1008. David is

  1009. coming from

  1010. the stump of

  1011. Jesse,

  1012. that the

  1013. golden

  1014. king of

  1015. the past

  1016. was just

  1017. a shadow

  1018. of the

  1019. true

  1020. God that

  1021. was still

  1022. to come.

  1023. And look

  1024. at how this

  1025. greater David

  1026. is described

  1027. in verses

  1028. 2 and

  1029. 3.

  1030. The spirit

  1031. of the

  1032. Lord will

  1033. rest on

  1034. him

  1035. permanently.

  1036. It will

  1037. never depart

  1038. from him.

  1039. And it

  1040. will give to

  1041. him these

  1042. gifts.

  1043. Wisdom.

  1044. Well what is

  1045. wisdom?

  1046. It is the

  1047. capacity to

  1048. have the

  1049. right judgment

  1050. in all

  1051. things.

  1052. What is

  1053. understanding?

  1054. Someone with

  1055. understanding has

  1056. the ability to

  1057. see to the

  1058. heart of the

  1059. issue.

  1060. They will

  1061. be able to

  1062. devise the

  1063. right course

  1064. of action.

  1065. They will

  1066. be able to

  1067. achieve it

  1068. perfectly.

  1069. He will

  1070. have knowledge.

  1071. That's not

  1072. just head

  1073. knowledge but

  1074. the enjoyment

  1075. of a personal

  1076. intimate

  1077. relationship with

  1078. a person and

  1079. in this context

  1080. with God.

  1081. And fear.

  1082. This person

  1083. will have

  1084. fear.

  1085. They will

  1086. live life in

  1087. complete conformity

  1088. to the will

  1089. of God.

  1090. In fact,

  1091. we're told,

  1092. aren't we,

  1093. this person

  1094. will delight,

  1095. verse 3,

  1096. as delight will

  1097. be the fear

  1098. of God.

  1099. And these

  1100. endowments,

  1101. they will

  1102. just come and

  1103. go.

  1104. The spirit of

  1105. the Lord is

  1106. upon him all

  1107. the time,

  1108. so he is

  1109. this all the

  1110. time.

  1111. And then

  1112. Isaiah teases

  1113. it out,

  1114. doesn't he,

  1115. by saying he

  1116. will not judge

  1117. by what he

  1118. sees with his

  1119. eyes or decide

  1120. what he hears

  1121. with his ears.

  1122. And you

  1123. think to

  1124. yourself,

  1125. what kind

  1126. of judge is

  1127. that?

  1128. Do I

  1129. really want a

  1130. judge who's

  1131. not going to

  1132. use his eyes

  1133. and his ears

  1134. when he's

  1135. considering the

  1136. evidence?

  1137. Isn't that a

  1138. bit dodgy?

  1139. But you

  1140. see,

  1141. this judge,

  1142. this judge

  1143. doesn't have

  1144. to use his

  1145. eyes or his

  1146. ears because

  1147. he already

  1148. knows all

  1149. the evidence.

  1150. Isaiah seems

  1151. becoming awfully

  1152. close,

  1153. doesn't he?

  1154. If not up to

  1155. attributing deity

  1156. to this righteous

  1157. king.

  1158. Because in the

  1159. end, there is

  1160. only one who

  1161. can judge,

  1162. isn't that?

  1163. And it is

  1164. only God can

  1165. judge.

  1166. Only God can

  1167. judge without

  1168. seeing the

  1169. case.

  1170. And because

  1171. this righteous

  1172. king does

  1173. know all the

  1174. evidence,

  1175. we are told

  1176. he judges

  1177. all cases,

  1178. especially for

  1179. the needy

  1180. and poor,

  1181. with justice

  1182. and righteousness.

  1183. And part of

  1184. the injustice

  1185. of Judah at

  1186. that time

  1187. involved the

  1188. rich being

  1189. able to put

  1190. off the

  1191. judges in

  1192. order to

  1193. avoid justice.

  1194. And they

  1195. got away

  1196. with everything.

  1197. They could

  1198. pay off the

  1199. judges.

  1200. But Isaiah

  1201. says there

  1202. is a judge

  1203. who will not

  1204. be paid

  1205. off.

  1206. There is a

  1207. righteous

  1208. king who

  1209. will come

  1210. to judge with

  1211. perfect equity

  1212. for everyone.

  1213. And his

  1214. rule will not

  1215. simply be by

  1216. his word.

  1217. Sorry,

  1218. his rule will

  1219. simply be by

  1220. his word.

  1221. The rod of

  1222. his mouth

  1223. will be no

  1224. physical weapons.

  1225. They will be

  1226. needed because

  1227. the power of

  1228. his word will

  1229. be the weapon.

  1230. And you see

  1231. gradually through

  1232. these first

  1233. 11 chapters of

  1234. Isaiah,

  1235. Isaiah has

  1236. been leaking

  1237. clues,

  1238. hasn't he,

  1239. about somebody

  1240. who is going

  1241. to come and

  1242. fix this world.

  1243. chapter 7

  1244. he is described

  1245. as a child

  1246. born to a

  1247. virgin called

  1248. Emmanuel.

  1249. He is God

  1250. with us.

  1251. In chapter 9

  1252. I told him

  1253. of a light

  1254. that is coming

  1255. into the deep

  1256. darkness.

  1257. I told him

  1258. of a son

  1259. that is born

  1260. for us who

  1261. is a wonderful

  1262. counsellor,

  1263. who is mighty

  1264. God, everlasting

  1265. father, prince of

  1266. peace.

  1267. And now we see

  1268. this one who is

  1269. coming, this

  1270. righteous king,

  1271. who Isaiah

  1272. says is the

  1273. greater David,

  1274. is endowed

  1275. with divine

  1276. ability.

  1277. that here is

  1278. one who can

  1279. and will

  1280. deliver us

  1281. to a world

  1282. of peace

  1283. inhabited by

  1284. a people of

  1285. rest.

  1286. And Isaiah

  1287. isn't finished

  1288. yet, look at

  1289. his description

  1290. in verse 10

  1291. and in that

  1292. day the

  1293. root of

  1294. Jesse,

  1295. the root

  1296. of Jesse

  1297. who shall

  1298. stand as a

  1299. signal for

  1300. the peoples

  1301. of him

  1302. shall the

  1303. nations

  1304. inquire and

  1305. his resting

  1306. place will

  1307. be glorious.

  1308. Now can

  1309. you see the

  1310. difference between

  1311. verse 1 and

  1312. verse 10?

  1313. what's he

  1314. described of

  1315. in verse 1?

  1316. Can you see

  1317. it?

  1318. What is he in

  1319. verse 1 of

  1320. Jesse?

  1321. He's the

  1322. shoot.

  1323. Verse 10,

  1324. what is he?

  1325. He's the root.

  1326. How on earth

  1327. does that work?

  1328. He is saying,

  1329. and this is so

  1330. wonderful isn't

  1331. it, that the

  1332. one who will

  1333. come from

  1334. Jesse is the

  1335. one from whom

  1336. Jesse came.

  1337. Can you get

  1338. that?

  1339. Write that down.

  1340. The one

  1341. who will

  1342. come from

  1343. Jesse is

  1344. the one from

  1345. whom Jesse

  1346. came.

  1347. The one who

  1348. entered into

  1349. creation

  1350. was the one

  1351. by whom all

  1352. of creation

  1353. was made.

  1354. The word

  1355. became

  1356. flesh.

  1357. And Isaiah

  1358. says this

  1359. root of

  1360. Jesse will

  1361. now stand

  1362. as a banner

  1363. to the

  1364. nations and

  1365. the nations

  1366. will run

  1367. to it.

  1368. But this

  1369. righteous

  1370. king will

  1371. be a

  1372. gathering

  1373. place.

  1374. He'll

  1375. be a

  1376. place of

  1377. rest,

  1378. a

  1379. promised

  1380. land,

  1381. a

  1382. sanctuary.

  1383. There will

  1384. literally be

  1385. glory for

  1386. those who

  1387. come.

  1388. There is

  1389. utopia.

  1390. There is

  1391. EU-topia.

  1392. There is a

  1393. good place.

  1394. There is a

  1395. world of

  1396. peace, but

  1397. it depends

  1398. upon a

  1399. person.

  1400. And it is

  1401. Jesus, if

  1402. you've not

  1403. guessed it.

  1404. Jesus, who

  1405. when he was

  1406. told by his

  1407. disciples,

  1408. Philip and

  1409. Andrew came

  1410. to him,

  1411. they said

  1412. there are

  1413. some Greeks

  1414. that want

  1415. to see

  1416. you.

  1417. Some Greeks,

  1418. they are not

  1419. Jews.

  1420. Well, they are

  1421. people from the

  1422. Gentiles.

  1423. They are Gentiles

  1424. who want to

  1425. see you,

  1426. Jesus.

  1427. And Jesus

  1428. says these

  1429. words, he

  1430. says, when I

  1431. am lifted up

  1432. from the

  1433. earth, I

  1434. will draw

  1435. all men,

  1436. all people

  1437. to myself.

  1438. And we

  1439. read that,

  1440. and maybe it's

  1441. not the

  1442. clearest thing

  1443. in our minds,

  1444. what Jesus is

  1445. talking about.

  1446. And it

  1447. wouldn't have

  1448. been the

  1449. clearest thing

  1450. in the

  1451. minds of

  1452. his audience.

  1453. Because

  1454. immediately

  1455. after having

  1456. quoted

  1457. Jesus, John

  1458. writes this,

  1459. Jesus said

  1460. this to show

  1461. the kind

  1462. of death

  1463. that he's

  1464. going to

  1465. die.

  1466. I, when

  1467. I am

  1468. lifted up

  1469. from the

  1470. earth, will

  1471. draw all

  1472. men to

  1473. myself.

  1474. I will

  1475. be a

  1476. signal for

  1477. the peoples.

  1478. I'll be a

  1479. banner for

  1480. the peoples.

  1481. And suddenly

  1482. it comes

  1483. together.

  1484. But as I

  1485. was speaking

  1486. of a world

  1487. of peace

  1488. inhabited by

  1489. a people of

  1490. rest, ruled

  1491. by a

  1492. sovereign

  1493. king, and

  1494. the sovereign

  1495. king is the

  1496. crucified one.

  1497. And the

  1498. nations come,

  1499. we come this

  1500. morning to the

  1501. one lifted up,

  1502. we come to

  1503. the banner, we

  1504. come to the

  1505. signal over the

  1506. nations.

  1507. And you say,

  1508. who would

  1509. rally to a

  1510. crucified person

  1511. on a cross?

  1512. And the

  1513. answer is those

  1514. who come to

  1515. Jesus.

  1516. And for

  1517. any of us to

  1518. enter that

  1519. world of peace

  1520. which we all

  1521. desire, we

  1522. need a

  1523. champion.

  1524. We need a

  1525. king who

  1526. will crush

  1527. the serpent.

  1528. We need a

  1529. king who

  1530. will defeat

  1531. sin and

  1532. death that

  1533. entered into

  1534. this world

  1535. of the

  1536. fallen.

  1537. You and

  1538. I cannot

  1539. do it.

  1540. You cannot.

  1541. And you

  1542. cannot create

  1543. your perfect

  1544. world.

  1545. You cannot

  1546. and God

  1547. will not let

  1548. you do it.

  1549. And you

  1550. and I are

  1551. under the

  1552. judgment

  1553. ourselves and

  1554. we cannot

  1555. fix the

  1556. problem.

  1557. We need

  1558. someone to

  1559. come in

  1560. who is not

  1561. under the

  1562. judgment.

  1563. God.

  1564. And this

  1565. king comes

  1566. into this

  1567. world of

  1568. sin and

  1569. he turns

  1570. the weapons

  1571. of the

  1572. devil on

  1573. himself.

  1574. Death

  1575. itself and

  1576. in his own

  1577. death he

  1578. takes the

  1579. wrath and

  1580. the judgment

  1581. of God

  1582. that was

  1583. ours to

  1584. take.

  1585. you see

  1586. Isaiah wants

  1587. you to know

  1588. that there

  1589. was a world

  1590. of peace but

  1591. you cannot

  1592. you will

  1593. not.

  1594. God will

  1595. not let

  1596. you create

  1597. that world.

  1598. You get

  1599. what you

  1600. want.

  1601. You get

  1602. that partner.

  1603. You get

  1604. that child.

  1605. You get

  1606. that home.

  1607. You get

  1608. that job.

  1609. It will

  1610. never be the

  1611. world that

  1612. you want.

  1613. It never

  1614. will.

  1615. You win

  1616. the lottery.

  1617. And it

  1618. will not be

  1619. the world

  1620. that you

  1621. want.

  1622. But Isaiah

  1623. wants you to

  1624. know there

  1625. is a world

  1626. of peace

  1627. in which

  1628. people are

  1629. at rest.

  1630. But the

  1631. only way

  1632. into that

  1633. world is

  1634. to stand

  1635. under the

  1636. banner of

  1637. the crucified

  1638. root of

  1639. Jesse.

  1640. It's to

  1641. stand under

  1642. the banner

  1643. of Jesus.

  1644. And those

  1645. that rally

  1646. to that

  1647. banner are

  1648. those that

  1649. say, we

  1650. do say

  1651. don't we

  1652. as

  1653. Christians,

  1654. we long

  1655. for a

  1656. better world

  1657. don't we?

  1658. But now

  1659. I see that

  1660. the greatest

  1661. obstacle to

  1662. that world

  1663. is

  1664. sin.

  1665. Including

  1666. my sin.

  1667. so that

  1668. my only

  1669. hope for

  1670. that

  1671. better

  1672. world

  1673. is to

  1674. trust in

  1675. the one

  1676. who

  1677. defeated

  1678. sin.

  1679. Jesus,

  1680. I'm going

  1681. to stand

  1682. under the

  1683. banner of

  1684. your cross

  1685. which promises

  1686. me a

  1687. world of

  1688. peace

  1689. inhabited

  1690. by a

  1691. people of

  1692. rest.

  1693. hope.

  1694. Because only

  1695. under that

  1696. banner is

  1697. hope.

  1698. I read

  1699. an

  1700. obituary

  1701. this week

  1702. and in

  1703. that

  1704. obituary

  1705. there was

  1706. a

  1707. critic,

  1708. I don't

  1709. know her,

  1710. Judith

  1711. Shulevitz

  1712. observed that

  1713. life unlike

  1714. fiction has

  1715. neither crisp

  1716. beginnings nor

  1717. redemptive

  1718. endings.

  1719. Is that

  1720. brilliant?

  1721. life is

  1722. messier than

  1723. fiction.

  1724. And life

  1725. doesn't look

  1726. like it has

  1727. a redemptive

  1728. end.

  1729. the great

  1730. news of

  1731. Isaiah is

  1732. that under

  1733. the banner

  1734. of Jesus,

  1735. under the

  1736. root of

  1737. Jesse,

  1738. life ultimately

  1739. does have a

  1740. redemptive

  1741. ending.

  1742. It is a

  1743. glorious ending

  1744. and it is a

  1745. resting place

  1746. called glory.

  1747. And that is

  1748. the world that

  1749. you and I

  1750. dream of and

  1751. because at

  1752. its centre is

  1753. Jesus the

  1754. righteous king,

  1755. it is a

  1756. world that

  1757. when we

  1758. enter it,

  1759. it will

  1760. only get

  1761. better.

  1762. It will

  1763. only get

  1764. better.

  1765. So in

  1766. that sense

  1767. it is a

  1768. little bit

  1769. like Narnia,

  1770. the final

  1771. volume of

  1772. the series,

  1773. The Last

  1774. Battle,

  1775. where Lewis

  1776. writes,

  1777. this is the

  1778. end of all

  1779. the stories

  1780. and we

  1781. can most

  1782. truly say

  1783. that they

  1784. all lived

  1785. happily ever

  1786. after.

  1787. But for

  1788. them it was

  1789. only the

  1790. beginning of

  1791. the real

  1792. story.

  1793. All their

  1794. life in

  1795. this world

  1796. and all

  1797. their

  1798. adventures

  1799. in Narnia

  1800. had only

  1801. been the

  1802. cover and

  1803. the title

  1804. page.

  1805. And now

  1806. at last

  1807. they were

  1808. beginning

  1809. chapter one

  1810. of the

  1811. great story

  1812. which no

  1813. one on

  1814. earth has

  1815. read,

  1816. which goes

  1817. on forever,

  1818. in which

  1819. every chapter

  1820. is better

  1821. than the one

  1822. before.

  1823. Because

  1824. it's a

  1825. world of

  1826. peace

  1827. inhabited

  1828. by a

  1829. people at

  1830. rest

  1831. ruled by

  1832. a

  1833. righteous

  1834. king.

  1835. Let's

  1836. pray.
